You Just Love Atlanta in the Fall?

There’s a great line in the Nora Ephron classic “You’ve Got Mail” that gets me every time. It’s probably not the one you think. It comes early in the film when Tom Hanks’ character writes to Meg Ryan’s character, “Don’t you just love New York in the fall? It makes me want to go buy schools supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”

I feel the same way about Atlanta when summer ends and autumn arrives. It really does make me want to head straight to the nearest big box store and pick up folders, notebooks, Ticonderoga #2 pencils and loose leaf paper. Of course, if you’re new to the ATL, you’ll need more than a trip to the school supply aisle as you navigate the metro area’s bustling education community. Fortunately, you have KNOWAtlanta and our annual Education Guide, which covers everything you must know about the ATL’s private schools, public schools and institutes of higher education. Name That Acronym!

If you’re ITP, that means you are Inside the Perimeter.

When you’re OTP, you’re Outside the Perimeter. So, what constitutes the Perimeter? That would be Interstate 285, or I-285, a major interstate highway loop that encircles Atlanta and connects I-75, I-85 and I-20 to the city. Any thing that falls within the loop is recognized as ITP.

Areas beyond the borders of the loop are considered to be OTP.

Some of the most popular ITP cities, towns, districts and neighborhoods include Midtown Atlanta, Downtown Atlanta, Buckhead, Decatur, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, VirginiaHighland, Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward and East Point, among many others. The two main counties that fall ITP are Fulton and DeKalb counties, while small portions of Cobb and Clayton counties also fall within the Perimeter.

The bustling atmosphere inside the Perimeter is replete with places to go and people to see. The area is popular with young couples and professionals who enjoy condo and townhome living, yet single-fam ily homes are becoming more prevalent in the area for those who want to enjoy the intown way of life.

The rest of metro Atlanta’s many counties fall outside the Perimeter, including Cobb, Cherokee, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Henry and several others. Sought-after OTP cities are such spots as Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth, Suwanee, Cumming, Braselton, Gainesville, Woodstock, Kennesaw, Marietta, Smyrna, Fayetteville, Peachtree City and McDonough.

Those who choose the OTP lifestyle typically have an inclination for spacious homes with yards, local parks and green space and room to grow. And while these suburban spots often have been seen as providing a slower pace than metro Atlanta’s core, there has been an evolution in recent years, with many downtown areas undergoing redevelopment efforts that mix small-town charm with urban convenience.

COMPANIES ADD AND EXPAND THEIR BUSINESS OPERATIONS IN METRO ATLANTA AND BEYOND

Metro Atlanta continues to strengthen its reputation as a business hub as companies relocate to the area to build new headquar ters and manufacturing facilities, as well as expand current ones. Local economies are fueled by those actions, resulting in job creation and new construction. And the area’s national rankings reflect that. In fact, metro Atlanta is ranked first in growth potential as a tech hub and fourth for corporate headquarters by Business Facilities Magazine. The Computing Technology Industry Association ranks Atlanta first in its tech diversity index, and Site Selection has named Georgia as the top state for doing business for eight consecutive years.

Year after year, the area’s economic growth buzzes along. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, metro Atlanta’s gross domestic product grew from $269 billion in 2010 to $397 billion in 2018. That’s a 47 percent total increase over eight years. That kind of impressive economic development is not only driven by the businesses and brands that already call Atlanta home, but it also attracts new companies and opportunities to the area. Here, we look at some of the big players and growing companies that have decided to make the move to metro Atlanta and nearby communities.

Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, will invest $60 million in a new manufacturing and research facility in Atlanta. Anduril’s new Atlanta office

will be home to Area-I, a manufacturer of advanced unmanned aircraft systems purchased by Anduril in 2021 that acts as a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. More than 180,000 square feet inside industrial buildings will be trans formed into mixed-use office, research and development, manufacturing and production space, located at 1435 Hills Place Northwest in Atlanta.

The move is expected to create 180 new jobs in Fulton County over the next three years. Area-I will be hiring for a variety of engineering disciplines, including aerospace, electrical, mechan ical, software and systems backgrounds for research and development. The new space allows for the hiring of more skilled mechanical and avionics technicians.

Atlanta is an ideal spot for Anduril, as aerospace products are Georgia’s top ex port, totaling $9.19 billion in 2021 alone. According to the company, its mission is to transform U.S. and allied military

capabilities with advanced technology by creating a path for the efficient develop ment of cutting-edge artificial intelli gence, computer vision and networking technology.

Boehringer Ingelheim

Boehringer Ingelheim, a leading Germanybased pharmaceutical health devel opment and manufacturing company, recently started construction on a new 63,000-square-foot facility as part of a $57 million investment at its Animal Health Global Innovation Center in Athens.

Two existing administrative and laboratory spaces will be connected as

part of this construction, and the existing innovation facilities will be renovated and expanded by 5,000 square feet. Expected to be completed by the spring of 2024, the company will add 55 new research and development positions. Boehringer Ingelheim manufactures vaccines, par asite-control products and therapeutics for pets, horses and livestock, and the expansion will bring additional research and development capabilities.

Since 2018, Boehringer Ingelheim has invested more than $100 million in facilities in Georgia. The company’s U.S. headquarters is located in Duluth, and its poultry vaccine manufacturing site is housed in Gainesville. The company focuses on human pharma, animal health and biopharmaceutical contract man ufacturing. Boehringer Ingelheim also works with the U.S. Department of Agri culture Wildlife Services for the distribu tion of oral rabies vaccine, and the USDA awarded the company a contract to help supply vaccines to the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank to prevent foot-and-mouth disease in American livestock.

Healthcare providers apply the company’s technologies in endoscopy, cardiology, peripheral interventions, oncology, urol ogy and neurology. In 2016, Boston Sci entific, headquartered in Massachusetts, purchased Georgia-based EndoChoice and currently employs approximately 300 workers across Georgia. More than 17,000 of the company’s products are used to treat approximately 30 million patients worldwide annually. Boston Scientific products treat benign and malignant tumors, gastrointestinal cancers and diseases, pulmonary diseases and lung cancers, digestion and nutrition, upper and lower GI bleeding and pancreatitis.

A manufacturer of medical devices used in interventional medical specialties, Boston Scientific will construct manu facturing and supply chain facilities in Johns Creek, investing $62.5 million in the project. The company will add an expected 340 new jobs over the next seven years.

Ecopol, an Italian manufacturer of bio degradable film used to wrap everyday products, will build the company’s first North American facility and invest more than $38 million in Spalding County. The facility, which will be built at The Lakes at Green Valley eco-industrial park, is expected to create 130 new jobs in the area. The location is a 570-acre mixed-use

80 Acres Farms, a vertical farming compa ny, announced a $120 million investment in Covington with the development of a new facility that will generate more than four times as much food as the company’s

largest facility in Hamilton, Ohio. The site will be capable of growing microgreens, leafy greens, vine crops and fruits yearround, boosting the company’s ability to meet consumer demand for local, fresh produce. The completion of the new facility, which is slated for early 2023, is expected to create 150 new jobs in Newton County, including hourly growing and harvesting jobs, as well as management positions in finance, sales and more. 80 Acre Farms’ name is derived not from the amount of land used to grow the farm’s products, but from the amount of food that is grown. In fact, the company is able to produce up to 300 times as much food per square foot as traditional farms, using 95 percent less water per pound of produce and minimizing food loss. Here in metro Atlanta, there are a num ber of services you’ll need to set up. Be sure to put these on your list as you begin the process.

Natural Gas

While metro Atlanta has a temperate climate, you’ll want to warm your home during the win ter. Also, natural gas is used for water heating, cooking, clothes drying and more. You’ll need to select a natural gas provider, and there are several that serve metro Atlanta. You typically can research rates, customer service offerings and discounts and sign up online, making the process quick and convenient.

Did You Know? Georgia deregulated its natural gas market in 1998. Atlanta Gas Light owns and controls the natural gas pipelines, and natural gas marketers work with it to access them. Companies like SCANA Energy offer both fixed rate and variable rate plans depending on your needs.

Electricity

Accounting for 48 percent of household energy use in Georgia, electricity should be at the top of your utility service list. Depending on where your home is located, you have options. You can select a company like Georgia Power, which is the largest subsidiary of the Southern Company, or one of the Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) that provide electricity to the area; these non-profit utilities serve more than four million customers as part of the Georgia Electric Mem bership Corporation.

Water

With metro Atlanta being comprised of so many cities and towns, it’s no surprise that there are various water and sewer service providers. Typically, your home will be serviced

by either the county water authority or the city government. If you are moving into a previous ly owned home, the former owners can provide you with information. For new homes, the builder can point you in the right direction.

Phone, Cable and Internet

These days, phone, cable and Internet service is just as important as every other utility. In metro Atlanta, major service providers like Xfinity and AT&T are going to be the most common options, as they cover the entire area. Some counties do offer alternatives, allowing you to personalize your service. As with all other utilities, a bit of online research can make the process fast and seamless.

And it’s the last one that often carries a great deal of weight—whether or not you personally plan to take advantage of the educational opportunities nearby.

“It really is no surprise that of all the amenities that can influence a home buyer’s decision, the proximity to qual ity schools is one of the most influen tial,” Lane asserts. “Whether you are a parent or not, schools can play a major role in the home buying decision. We find this to be true for buyers with school-age children, as well as buyers looking for a sound investment, as research shows that homes in a good school district are more likely to hold and increase in value than homes in a less desirable district.”

How do you describe the metro Atlanta new home market in terms of access to great schools?

The Atlanta area is home to some of the top public school districts in the country.

Out of the thousands of districts in the United States, Forsyth County ranks #2, Fayette County #11 and Cobb County #77. There are 14 counties in Georgia that rank in the top 100 nationwide, with sev eral in metro Atlanta. This gives buyers a variety of locations to start their search if schools are the deciding factor on where to purchase a new home.

What can people expect in terms of pur chasing a new home near a great school in metro Atlanta?

It’s rather simple. Homes in higher-rated public school districts are on average more expensive than homes in other school districts. If you are looking to buy in a top school district, you can expect to pay more for a smaller home to be in close proximity to the schools. For those willing to look at outlying areas and

schools, they will find that their budget will go much further.

How are local homebuilders taking schools into account in their new home community plans?

GEORGIA SCHOOL GLOSSARY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ACCREDITATIONS AND MEMBERSHIPS

Accelerated and Gifted Education: Programs that challenge students academically and that stress various areas including research and reference skills, accelerated learning and communication skills.

Alternative Education Program: A state program designed to give local school districts flexibility in various areas including in-school suspension, a school/ community guidance center and a community-based alternative education program.

Attendance Zones: Areas in which students attend certain public schools based on their home address.

Blue Ribbon School: School enrollments must include at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, these public schools must meet their state’s annual objectives in each of the two years prior to receive a nomination for this designation, then again the year in which a school is nominated.

Charter School: A public school that operates with freedom from several regulations that apply to traditional, sectarian public schools in Georgia.

College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI): The Georgia Department of Education’s accountability system. Public schools are graded on a 100-point scale in three major areas: achievement, progress and the achievement gap.

Georgia School of Excellence: Every year, one public school from each district ranked in the top 10 percent of Georgia schools with the greatest gain in student achievement is selected by the Department of Education to be a Georgia School of Excellence. In addition to these criteria, the schools must meet Adequate Yearly Progress for a minimum of three consecutive years, offer at least two Advanced Placement courses and be in existence for five years.

IB Program: International Baccalaureate strives to help students develop multiple skills, including intellectual, personal and social, to live and work in our globalizing world.

Magnet School: A public school that offers students a distinctive curriculum. Magnet schools may emphasize a variety of subjects including visual and performing arts, math, science and technology.

In with the New METRO ATLANTA’S PRIVATE SCHOOLS INTRODUCE A PLETHORA OF NEW OFFERINGS

As the school year gets underway, stu dents at many metro Atlanta private schools are reaping the benefits of academic updates, campus enhancements and new staff. Long-term planning, an openness to new ideas and the support of generous donors are helping these institutions continue to best serve their students. Read on for a closer look at what’s new.

Academic Additions

At the heart of any school are its curriculum and approaches. Lakeview Academy, in part, attributes the success of its students to an emphasis on ensuring that key skills are reinforced across all subjects and that

students develop a deep understanding of material that will be applied in the following grade. This school year, a new K-12 academic alignment, The Building Blocks of a Complete Education, is being implemented. For the sixth through 12th grades, new pacing guides are also going into effect to ensure the alignment has accountability and day-to-day steps, explains Wade Hanse, Ed.D., dean of academics and instruction.

“It’s amazing, the energy and col laboration that emerges from these pacing meetings with all math teachers or English teachers in a room together planning for the good of the students,” says Hanse. “These connections be

tween teachers allow Lakeview to trace academic issues to their roots rather than mitigate trends on the surface. This helps raise the academic bar post-Covid.”

While Lakeview Academy was review ing its academic alignment, the faculty at Springmont School was doing some revising of its own. The team took a closer look at the fine arts curriculum and its various components. “Beginning last year and continuing into the 2022-23 school year, these programs are being collabora tively reevaluated and reimagined, ensuring they are age-appropriate and allow for greater diversity and self-expression,” says Julie Strickland, director of marketing and communication at the school, which serves

children ages 18 months to 14 years old. In keeping with the school’s Montessori meth od, new performance and showcase oppor tunities give students more freedom while complementing classroom instruction and avenues to explore the arts outside of set teaching time, such as Open Art Studio and Open Music Studio. Following last year’s successful replacement of the annual lower elementary musical performance with the chance for each class to put on its own fall semester fine arts afternoon program and a spring semester performance, similar op portunities are being presented to older and younger learners. This fall, primary classes will incorporate art appreciation into an open house they will host, and upper elementary students will present a fine arts showcase. A new event—a middle school art and music show—is on the docket for spring as well.

At North Cobb Christian School, design now plays a major role in helping students learn, and an emphasis on it has even led to the construction of a new upper school facility. Today, upper school students have access to a state-of-the-art STEM cen ter inside the facility that provides maker and collaboration spaces, physics and ro botics labs, tools such as sewing and textile

construction machines and more. The facil ity, which partially opened in 2020 and will have its second phase complete in 2024, has already helped support the new schoolwide Understanding by Design (UbD) initiative, which incorporates components such as project-based learning and student choice. Upper school business and STEM Academy students recently used the center’s CO2 laser engravers to create items to sell for charity. Other UbD-based projects carried out by students include commemorative virtual boards honoring Holocaust resistors and an interactive health expo.

“We are honing students’ criti cal thinking and problem-solving abilities. Understanding by De sign is about using what we know, in context, to apply knowledge and skills to real-world settings,” says Dr. Chip Houston, assistant head of school at North Cobb Christian School. “The goal is for students to be able to make con nections, collaborate and transfer their learning to impact the world around them.”

and improvements have been on the uptick lately across multiple schools.

Though it doesn’t have an entire com plex dedicated to design, Pace Academy is now home to a 1,100-plus-square-foot Design Thinking Lab. The lab is part of Pace’s new Kam Memar Lower School, a massive three-story addition to the school’s existing lower school classroom building, which pre-first through fifth grade students used last school year but officially opened in the spring of 2022. In addition to the creation of the Design Thinking Lab and adjacent science classroom, the lower school Academic Resource Center has been expanded and provides spaces for an increased staff to interact with students and parents; the center also includes areas for programs that encourage student collaboration and mentorship, explains Dorothy Hutcheson, head of lower school. In addition, students are likely most excited about what the school has dubbed “The World’s Greatest Play ground,” accessible via over

sized slides and climbing structures from the classroom building’s second story, plus the ground-level gymnasium. The new play space, which also incorporates ADA-accessible features, reinforces ex ploration, use of imagination and critical thinking through various elements like a whopping 11 slides, themed activity panels and ropes for climbing.

At Woodward Academy, students will soon be able to foster their creativity in the expanded and upgraded Richardson

Hall on the school’s main campus in College Park. In addition to continuing to hold much of the campus’s upper school visual and performing arts space, Richardson Hall will feature a larger sculpture studio, jewelry studio and added orchestra program room, notes Steven Averett, editorial and creative manager. Slated to be complete in spring of 2023, the expansion will also include new office and collaboration spaces for the performing arts department, a dance studio and a storage area. And another place where students can create visual art is the new Pechter Family Digital Lab. In addition to a wide-format drawing tablet and 3D printer, the lab inside the Carlos Library provides students with other advanced technology and computer resources for various digital-based endeavors.

on the south campus, the 24,268-squarefoot Stuart and Eulene Murray Academy preschool will open next summer and include 10 new classrooms, a theatre, an innovation center and indoor interactive and outdoor play spaces. According to Dr. Chris Harmon, head of school, “With the tools that this facility provides for our teachers in STEAM, fine arts, music, worship, dance and multi-sensory experi ences, our students will be well prepared for learning in years to come.”

Youngsters have plenty to be eager about at Trinity School as well since they now have access to a new Early Child hood Outdoor Learning Center, which incorporates art and science and was built thanks to the school’s Inspire Excellence campaign. The initiative has also enabled the school to relocate and renovate upper elementary classrooms and complete its Early Elementary Dining Hall. Future plans for the school for children age 3 through sixth grade include enhancing its

early elementary playground, constructing a multi-use recreation center and increas ing its endowment support.

At the start of the year, the stu dent-founded and student-run coffee shop at Mount Paran Christian School, Roost Coffee Co., expanded into a permanent retail storefront at the new Murray Inno vation Center. The expansion was partially made possible by the shop’s found er successfully pitching a partnership to a MPCS alumnus and his father, who work together in a family coffee business. Always open to adapting to the needs of its customers, the coffee shop also pivoted at the beginning of the pandemic, when it launched an ordering website. Roost Coffee Co. was established after Zachary Fors, Class of 2021, secured an investment from Head of High School and Assistant Head of School Tawanna Rusk during his freshman year to offer beverages, light food and on-campus catering.

At The Westminster Schools, this is the second academic year that its new build ing, Barge Commons, has officially been open. “Barge Commons is classrooms and meeting spaces, offices and a chapel. But more than any single function, Barge Commons is the place our Westminster

community both gathers and reaches out to our city and the wider world,” says Keith Evans, president. “The transparency and ability to see through the building were important because we want what happens in this building to be on display. We want to stimulate curiosity in this building. We want kids to come in, see a gathering and stop and look and see what’s going on.” The building also houses areas for departments such as the Glenn Institute for Philanthropy and Service Learning, a café and spots for studying.

For King’s Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta, the focus right now is on what’s happening outdoors and with ath letics. Students will soon be able to spend even more time outside and enjoy a new softball field and two new baseball fields created on property the school acquired in the summer of 2021. In addition to making it possible for the school’s sports teams to host home games on their own campus, the property acquisition also comes with plans to convert the school’s current soccer field into a multi-pur pose field, as well as build five tennis courts and a cross country trail using funds from the KRCS Be Bold cam paign, explains Heni Jordan, director of

development. The initiative also allowed the school to complete the buildout of the third floor of its high school.

The Mount Vernon School has a new Director of Innovation, Eduardo Milrud, PhD, to oversee iD, the school’s Innova tion Diploma program for upper school students. “iD is not an elective but rather a school-within-a-school that awards credit for humanities; chemistry; biology; social

entrepreneurship; maker, design, and engineering and arts that focus on graphic design and live event production,” Milrud says. “Over the years, the Innovation Di ploma has become a national leading high school program focusing on innovation as a form of developing knowledge and tools applicable to every discipline. In the next few years, our team’s goal is to generate a more profound impact within our community and worldwide by enabling our students to realize the change they envision.” For eighth graders, the school has launched a middle school Impact Design Lab program, which will serve as a precursor to iD and emphasize communityfocused problem-solving.

This academic year will also be an exciting one for high school students at Landmark Christian School. The school welcomed Dylan Curtis as the new high school principal this past summer, and this year is the first one students will spend in the school’s new high school building. Previously an abandoned public school, the facility was renovated and modernized inside and out, with highlights including indoor labs for aviation, science and engineering and an outdoor vegetable garden and courtyard. The school doesn’t plan to stop there. “This is the first phase in our growing high school offerings. We will continue

to improve and add to this space,” says Walter Johnson, director of marketing and communications.

For Annunciation Day School, the year 2022 is a big one in general, as it marks the school’s 20th anniversary. Today, ADS has two accreditations, including its most recent recognition from Cognia,

and serves students age 2 through eighth grade, though it originally started out as a preschool. “The school community, along with the church parish family at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, have supported var ious initiatives that have grown and devel oped the school,” says Sophia Tsiotsias, com munications and development director,

citing ADS’s Orton-Gillingham training for teachers and participating in the Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference (MAAC) as examples. An anniversary celebration will take place this fall at the school’s annual gala in October at the Hellenic Center of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation. Adam Greenwood, the new head of school, who hails from England, where he previously held similar positions, has also arrived—adding to the excitement of the 2022-2023 academic year.

cial needs students. And those institutions are as diverse as the children themselves, focusing on distinct issues and conditions, from autism and dyslexia to a range of other learning differenc es. Here, we look at several schools that truly stand out within Atlanta’s impressive education system: GRACEPOINT School, The Howard School and The Cottage School.

Students receive a comprehensive, high-quality educational program that combines remediation with enrichment and acceleration. GRACEPOINT’s

mission is to equip dyslexic students with the skills needed to develop into inde pendent and confident learners through sequential and multisensory instruction, helping each child develop “a lifelong desire for growing in wisdom and gaining knowledge of the Lord.” The school has enrolled 132 students in first through eighth grades.

GRACEPOINT’s Orton-Gillingham (OG) instructional program is one of only 19 accredited programs in the nation by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. Orton-Gill ingham is a diagnostic, prescriptive and multisensory approach to reading and spelling. “Our teachers are trained to use this approach when teaching reading and to reinforce the approach throughout the day in all subject areas,” says Susan Spruill, director of marketing and communication. Students receive 75 minutes of reading instruction daily. Spruill adds, “While remediating their academic weaknesses, GRACEPOINT identifies and exploits students’ strengths, viewing dyslexia as a gift to embrace and celebrate. The school helps foster their

self-confidence and self-advocacy skills while creating positive work habits and study skills.”

GRACEPOINT also created a unique program that increases the students’ understanding of morphology—the study of words, their meanings and how they are built. “Morphemes are the smallest unit of meaning (bases, prefixes and suffixes). One common strength of the dyslexic learner is their ability to see these patterns, or morphemes, in words,” Spruill says. Morphology and OG are intertwined from the beginning in remediation and continue in advanced morphology classes. Angie Strack, director of morphology, created special characters, including Dr. Morphology, to introduce morphology to the students. “GRACEPOINT School’s schoolwide morphological initiative empowers, enriches and equips its students to attack

vocabulary, which strengthens reading comprehension and develops a deeper understanding of word meaning.”

GRACEPOINT administrators expect the school will be able to serve up to 50 percent more dyslexic students with the purchase of a building at 1407 Cobb Parkway. The building will be renovated

throughout the current academic year, with completion slated for a fall 2023 opening. The school is currently on the campus of Piedmont Church, and the renovated building will provide students and staff with larger classrooms, an indoor gym, a GRACEPOINT news-technolo gy lab, a designated lunch area and two

As Spruill concludes, “With limited options in our area for a fully immersive program to serve dyslexic learners, GRACEPOINT has steadily grown due to word-of-mouth testimonials.”

The Howard School focuses on language-based learning differences. Nestled into more than 17 acres on the west side of Atlanta, the school serves approximately 350 students in grades K through 12 and is the only school of its kind in the city, says Marci Mitchell, di rector of marketing and communications.

Marian Howard founded the school in

1950. Mitchell notes that Howard was “an amazing woman who changed the land scape of education in Atlanta by creating an educational world with no boundaries, labels or diminished expectations.”

Howard offers a full school experience with many opportu nities to succeed in academics, the arts and athletics. “Teams of highly qualified and dedicated teachers and specialists—in cluding speech-language pathologists, psychologists, literacy and math specialists— work with students to provide individualized instruction and learning plans,” Mitchell says. A New Opportunity for Tennis in Postsecondary Education

The tennis industry isn’t just growing; it’s skyrocketing. From 2019 to 2021, tennis has seen a 27.9 percent increase in participation in the U.S., growing by approximately 4.9 million players. Ac cording to the Physical Activity Council’s (PAC) participation report, more than 22.6 million people took to the courts in

2021 — up approximately one million players from 2020.

Life University’s newest track within its master’s degree in Sport Health Science program—Tennis Fitness & Sport Sci ence—is designed to transform your love of tennis into a rewarding career. Life U’s robust program leverages a large network of tennis and fitness industry experts to pre pare graduates with a unique blend of skills as they enter this growing job market.

Throughout the program, students will have various opportunities to observe live training sessions with tennis athletes, work alongside unique experts in the field and review and research the latest tennis-specific training methods. After completing the program, students will

have the knowledge, skills and abilities to work with tennis athletes on improving performance and reducing the likelihood of injury.

All new applicants will start together in the 2022 fall quarter beginning the first week of October. They will go through the program as a cohort, which allows for unparalleled learning opportunities through group projects, training and research.

Program director Dr. Mark Kovacs, PhD, FACSM, SCSC, CTPS, MTPS, has more than two decades of experience at the highest levels of tennis training and research. He has directed Coaching Education & Sport Science for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and

worked personally with more than two dozen Top 100 ATP and WTA players. He is also the executive director of the In ternational Tennis Performance Associa tion (iTPA), the largest tennis fitness and sport science organization in the world that has helped thousands get educated and certified to work with tennis athletes in academies, tennis clubs and collegiate and professional environments.

Life U’s Tennis Fitness & Sport Science track will partner with a wide variety of organizations to help educate students in various areas of strength and condition ing, tennis medicine, tennis innovation and technology, athlete care, recovery, sleep and nutrition. Life U’s Newest Online Degree Adds Depth to Health Science Roster

Life U’s College of Online Education strives to give its students a chance for an individualized education no matter where they reside. The department has continually expanded its offerings to help spread Life U’s philosophy and educa tional values across the globe.

In Life U’s online Bachelor of Science

in Anatomy and Physiology, students will learn to navigate and understand the human body’s complexities and pre pare for a future healthcare career. The program’s curriculum explores how the human body works and how one’s daily life affects physiology. Students will also discover how anatomy and physiology af fect various ethical, social and philosoph ical issues. Furthermore, they will learn how Vitalism applies to the human body, its physiology and healing process and the governance of regulating a homeo static balance. Vitalism, as Life University defines it, is the recognition that the uni verse itself is self-conscious and, as such, creates itself as a dynamic system wherein living organisms are self-developing, self-maintaining and self-healing. For example, the human body works hard to express health, to maintain health and to recover from illnesses or other conditions that threaten health.

“Adding an online bachelor’s degree in Anatomy and Physiology will allow students from all over the world to partake in the high-quality education offered at Life U in a track that suits them

well to explore graduate school options,” explains Dr. Richard Belcastro, dean of the College of Online Education. “The program is aimed at providing students withthe fundamental knowledge that they will need for future careers in the healthcare industry.”
