Spring Forward

I

President

have to admit that forcing the clocks forward an hour every spring is not my favorite part of this otherwise wonderful and welcomed season. I lose an hour of sleep, and it takes a few days for my body to adjust to the sun still shining well into

the evening. However, as much as I resist the literal springing forward in terms of the numbers on the ol’ timepiece, I do enjoy the sense that things are moving ahead as the mercury rises to the perfect outdoor temperature and the flowers bloom in glorious color. And there’s no better place to find yourself in all-out forward motion than metro Atlanta, where things always seem to be in full-steam-ahead mode. You can see it in the local business community, which continues to welcome com-

upwards as they take advantage of Atlanta’s bustling condo market, which we spotlight in our feature on page 22. The same can be said about the local luxury home market, which has been buzzing with activity for the last year and continues to skyrocket today; we look at this outstanding trend with the help of the New Homes Division for And, as always, we look at the momentum found in all kinds of additional arenas across metro Atlanta, from the area’s K-12 private schools (and their amazing sports programs) to our burgeoning active adult real estate market to the way local cities are celebrating the arrival of spring with fairs, festivals and family-friendly fun. There’s so much to see and do this season, and we have the 411 on all of it. So harness the power of that spring fever you’ve been feeling, spring to your feet and spring right into the life you’ve been waiting for here in Atlanta. Soon enough, you’ll have a bona fide spring in your step as one of the newest residents of our fair city. Amy Meadows, Editor

The Real Estate Professional According to Christa Huffstickler, founder and CEO of Engel & Völkers Atlanta, there are a number of reasons to consider intown for your first or next home purchase. “Intown living is so appealing to buyers across Atlanta right now because of the top-tier dining, shopping and entertainment options right at your doorstep,” she explains. “Intown living affords buyers the opportunity to live a semicar-free lifestyle with all of the amenities one would need within walking distance. It’s the most attractive for buyers looking to be 10 to 15 minutes from the hottest neighborhoods around metro Atlanta.”

Metro Atlanta Guide to Utilities

B

efore you put the key in the lock of your new home, you have to prepare the property for your arrival. This means getting your

utilities up and running soon after your home closing. Here in metro Atlanta, there are a number of services you’ll need to set up. Be sure to put these on your list as you begin the process.

Natural Gas While metro Atlanta has a temperate climate, you’ll want to warm your home during the winter. Also, natural gas is used for water heating, cooking, clothes drying and more. You’ll need to select a natural gas provider, and there are several that serve metro Atlanta. You typically can research rates, customer service offerings and discounts and sign up online, making the process quick and convenient. Did You Know? Georgia deregulated its natural gas market in 1998. Atlanta Gas Light owns and controls the natural gas pipelines, and natural gas marketers work with it to access them. Companies like SCANA Energy offer both fixed rate and variable rate plans depending on your needs.

Electricity Accounting for 48 percent of household energy use in Georgia, electricity should be at the top of your utility service list. Depending on where your home is located, you have options. You can select a company like Georgia Power, which is the largest subsidiary of the Southern Company, or one of the Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) that provide electricity to the area; these non-profit utilities serve more than four million

Hotels usually do their best to keep their guests as secure as possible; however, as a business open to the public, with people coming in and out for meetings and lodging, there’s only so much they can do. Specifically, here are some of the potential risks: Entry to your room: Virtually all hotel staff have access to enter your room—and not all of them are honest. Sanitation: Cleaning staff sometimes cut corners in sanitation practices, and bedding in particular doesn’t always get as clean as it should.

Why a hotel room when you can have an apartment home?

W

ith a minimum 14-day stay, TP Corporate Lodging residents enjoy all the amenities of a full-size apartment home that costs less than a hotel room.

Predators: Even with secured entries, as a public facility, a hotel often attracts predatory people who wait in the wings to steal or to cause harm.

How Corporate Housing Is Safer Extended stay corporate housing resolves almost all of the safety issues that accompany the other options. For example: The apartments are private. Considerations to make when you are in the market for purchasing a home By Michael Quirk, communications coordinator for Ameris Bank

I

Factor in Distances to Important Landmarks The distance from your home to your office has long been a staple consideration during home buying. As many companies have increased their remote work possibilities, this has become less of a factor to some. Still, there are other landmark distances for you to consider when purchasing your next home. Factoring in the distance to your gym, your child’s school or daycare, your friends and family, the airport or any other place you tend to visit regularly should be on your mind. Location is a key decision-driver for many home buyers, and thinking about it ahead of time can save you considerable headaches rather than dealing with the tedious travel time after the fact.

might not be enjoyable when you’re relaxing in the yard? Do you prefer to have a sidewalk to walk your dog? Will it be difficult turning on and off your street? Thinking of your average Tuesday in the home may not be as romantic as envisioning a marquee occasion in the future, but it is vitally important.

Ensure the Housing Situation is a Fit for the Long Run On a similar note, you should consider how the home and neighborhood will work for you in the future. If you have a child or are planning to start or grow your family, are there enough bedrooms and maybe a dedicated playroom? Are you working remotely now and need a home office? By the same token, if you either have a dog or are thinking about adopting one in the future, is there a yard or nearby park where your furry friend can let out some energy?
