Howdy Partners!
There’s a new sheriff in town, and I’m ready for action! Ready to serve! My dedication to ALTA began so long ago I feel like I rode in on a stagecoach. I began by serving as a captain and then a scorekeeper. Being a scorekeeper meant receiving paper scorecards in the mail and then reporting the scores to the coordinator of the division.
I enjoyed the game of tennis and met many special people. Through the friendships I made, and my dedication to my team, I was asked to serve as an ALTA coordinator and then as an overall coordinator. I enjoyed helping captains understand their role, understand the rules, and learn how these tools would help them enjoy leading their team. I soon realized that volunteering for ALTA was more than a position; it was being part of a family.
Next stop for me was an opportunity to serve as secretary of the ALTA Foundation. The ALTA Foundation was created to promote health, character, sportsmanship, and responsible citizenship by using the game of tennis to support, not only amateur tennis athletes, but programs for the disadvantaged and the physically and mentally challenged. The ALTA Foundation also provides and promotes new opportunities for under–served youth and other tennis programs such as Special Olympics, Atlanta Youth Tennis and Education Foundation, Special Pops, multiple wheelchair clinics, tournaments, and events.
With my enthusiasm for our foundation, I was able to serve as ALTA Foundation President. When that journey ended, I moved back to the Sunday Women’s League as vice president. As my positions and experience grew, so did my dedication to ALTA. I was sincerely hoping my journey would never end. I was honored and humbled when I was asked to be ALTA’s first vice president. Now in 2023, I’m holding the reins. I have some ideas, and I’m open for more.
Georgia has some of the fastest growing counties in the United States. We’ve listened, and we’ve acted. We are expanding our boundaries by stretching the ropes to include Forsyth and Cherokee Counties. This should mean more people, more teams, more fun, and hopefully a little less travel time for our members.
ALTA is where Atlanta comes to play. Play what? We are quick on the draw! We are adding pickleball as the newest league in ALTA town. It’s a fun, social sport that appeals to all ages and provides a great workout! Stay tuned for more information on how to be a “pickler” with us!
Thank you for the opportunity to be your president. It’s a journey to which I look forward, and a journey we will take together.
For the latest news, information and events.

ALTA Expands its Boundaries in New Pilot Program for Spring of 2023
ALTA has been a staple in Atlanta since its inception in 1934. League play was established over 50 years ago in 1971. As times have changed, so has ALTA. We are excited to announce the expansion of our boundaries for ALTA-approved facilities. This is a two-year pilot program that begins in the spring 2023 season. Roster registration ends on January 19, so make sure your facility is inspected and approved before that date. You can do that through “Facilities” on the altatennis.org website. While it might seem contradictory because of increased geographical locations, the goal is to increase membership, add more teams, and ultimately reduce travel time. Here are the details:
Current requirement:
• For ALTA New Facility Request: Facility must be within the 1998 boundary of the Atlanta five-county metro area (Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett)
• For ALTA Annexation Request: Facility must be located within 10 miles of the 1998 boundary of the Atlanta five-county metro area (Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett) and within 10 surface miles of an existing limited access highway.
Two-year pilot/test program proposed changes (beginning in the 2023 spring season):
• To add Cherokee and Forsyth Counties as test/pilot counties to the Atlanta fivecounty metro area (Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett).
• Facility must be within the 1998 boundary of the Atlanta five-county metro area (Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett). As of spring season 2023, Cherokee and Forsyth Counties are added as two-year test/pilot counties to the Atlanta five-county metro area (Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett). Cherokee and Forsyth Counties will not have any mileage extensions from their county lines.
• Add to the Annexation Request the following: Facility must be located within 10 miles of the 1998 boundary of the Atlanta 5-County Metro Area (Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinnett) and within 10 surface miles of an existing limited
access highway. For Hall, Jackson, and Barrow Counties, a facility may be added as a test pilot annexed facility if located within 15 miles from the Gwinnett County line and 15 surface miles from an existing limited access highway.
Exceptions:
• Junior Leagues and the Junior Challenge Ladder are not included.
• At this time, due to the smaller number of teams and divisions, the AA levels of all leagues will not be able to be accommodated/included in the test/pilot program.
• Any facility accepted into this test/pilot boundary program will not receive any grandfathered rights or status.

How can I add a Request for Review to the roster I entered for the new season?
Once a roster is entered, it will be in My Active Teams > Roster where a Request for Review can be added during the roster entry/ corrections period. It’s also in My Rosters > Select.
What’s the correct way to record a match retirement?
Enter the game and set scores at the time of the retirement and indicate which team retired and which team won. The system will give the winner enough games and sets for the win.
As a captain, how can I tell what level flight the computer will give my team?
ALTA Documents has a League Placement document that tells what rating is used for each player on the team. Ultimately, league volunteers may move teams to even out numbers at each level flight.

In recognition of the additional resources needed in Title I high schools for tennis, the ALTA Foundation START (Support for Teaching Atlanta Recreational Tennis) program provides funding for supplemental tennis needs in Atlanta Metro Area Title I high schools. Funding requests may include the following:
• Fee for community coach certification for a GPTA or PTR coach (estimated $375)
• Stipend for community coach (estimated $2,000)
• Equipment needs (estimated $1,125)
The START grant application period runs August 1 thru September 30 with award announcements in October. A link to the online application can be found at altatennis.org. For additional information about the START program, contact Rita Maloof at foundationpresident@altatennis.org.
As the tennis season is now over, I wanted to update you all on the monumental success of the team this year, as well as the improvements your support has provided to our program this year. We began in January off to a great start with a very young team of nearly all underclassmen. Against great odds, the girls’ team advanced to the region and state tournament for the first time in a decade! Coach Terrell helped the young players build upon their basic skills throughout the season and helped many of them achieve their end of the year goals. The funds provided through the START grant were used to gear up the team with warmups, uniforms, and contributed to the major purchase of new custom windscreens! The ball machine that was purchased at the end of last year by you all was a huge hit (no pun intended) with the athletes. They loved to use it during station practice, and it helped greatly in developing consistency on their ground strikes and more. Again, we are all thankful to you here at Pebblebrook and hope that we can continue our partnership in the future.

Atlanta Athletic Club to Host 6th annual US Pro Women’s Clay Court Championships
The ITF World Tennis Tour and the USTA Pro Circuit has announced that the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek will host the 6th annual US Pro Women’s Clay Court Championships, May 8-14, 2023.
The tournament, a USTA Pro Circuit event, is the largest tennis event on the Pro Circuit and attracts the world’s best female tennis players as they prepare to play Roland Garros just a few weeks later.
This event will be part of the USTA Wildcard Challenge with the American player obtaining the most points over four tournaments in April and May receiving a main draw Wildcard into Roland Garros. The field for the $100,000 ITF World Tennis Tour Event will feature 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Players ranked as high as No. 40 in the world typically compete in USTA Pro Circuit events. The qualifying rounds begin May 8 and will determine the final four singles players in the field. Main Draw matches begin Tuesday, May 9 at 11 a.m.
Hosted by the Atlanta Athletic Club, the ITF World Tennis Tour and USTA Pro Circuit is designed to provide a pathway for American players starting their careers on the WTA Tour. The ITF World Tennis Tour is a series of nearly 170 international women’s professional tennis tournaments.
“We are thrilled to be able to host such a high-level event here at the Atlanta Athletic Club. This will be an annual event here and a great way to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary in 2023,” said Jeff Chandley, Director of Athletics.
According to Tournament Director Scott Mitchell, “This World Tennis Tour Event provides a unique opportunity to finally see the highest levels of women’s professional tennis in Atlanta. We want to share in the excitement of professional women’s tennis right here in the Southeast Region. We want this to be an event for non-tennis fans as much as tennis fans, with food, entertainment, and a family experience.”

Atlanta Youth Tennis and Education Foundation Wins State Award
The Atlanta Youth Tennis and Education Foundation (AYTEF), based out of Fair Oaks Tennis Center, recently was named the National Junior Tennis League Chapter (NJTL) of the Year by the USTA–Georgia. The NJTL Chapter of the Year criteria include: quality of on-court program; quality of management structure; involvement with other community organizations, such as schools, parks, YMCA, YWCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, PALs, Boy/ Girl Scouts, etc.; support of the local business community; and demonstration of financial sustainability.
AYTEF has been based at Fair Oaks Tennis Center for the past two years. The program offers low-cost and free tennis and education programs for youth in grades K-8. This year, AYTEF plans to offer additional programming for high school students. The organization’s Block Party is a free community outreach event with pizza, tennis, and games offered each month. AYTEF’s low-cost
programs include GameSetMatch, Summer Tennis Camp, and STEM Learning Labs.
Over the past year, AYTEF has provided 345 hours of tennis instruction and 269 hours of character development and academic enrichment to 251 youth. Through their core program, GameSetMatch, AYTEF delivered 48 weeks of low-cost tennis, academic, and life-skills curriculum.
Research has found that youth who participate in after-school and summer programs like the ones AYTEF provide see positive gains in their academics, health, attitude, and life skills. Eightytwo percent of the GameSetMatch participants who participate in life-skills curriculum and academic enrichment say the program has helped them to think more positively both on and off the court. AYTEF believes that the powerful combination of tennis and education can change lives.
Congratulations
Congratulations to the Atlanta Tennis community for helping make Atlanta’s only ATP event such a success!

A NEW ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE NEW YEAR
I want to wish all the ALTA members a happy and healthy new year and as the calendar turns to 2023, there are a lot of exciting things on the horizon for GF Sports and Entertainment and for tennis in Atlanta.
After ten years as Chief Business Officer and Tournament Director of the Atlanta Open, Eddie Gonzalez has made the decision to step down from his role, effective the end of 2022. Babolat Introduces New Evo Models
Babolat says its new Evo Aero and Evo Aero Lite are innovative, high-performance racquets delivering effortless power, comfort, and more spin.
Babolat has extended its Evo racquet line for casual players wanting a performance racquet that provides easy power and comfort, or for junior players transitioning to their first adult racquet. The manufacturer says Evo racquets feature cutting-edge technologies that help players realize their potential while enjoying the game.
Babolat Evo racquets feature a larger head size (660 cm2 / 102 in2) and are designed to meet players’ needs for more power to return deep shots in the court. The SMAC EX technology, a viscoelastic material applied to four key areas of the frame, adds more comfort with increased vibration dampening and delivers a softer sound at impact.
Featuring a new 16x18 string pattern, the Evo Aero’s aerodynamic frame generates easier spin on every shot. The strengthened trampoline effect delivers more power for less energy, the company says. The Evo Aero Lite is lighter by 15 grams and is ideal for juniors looking for their first adult racquet delivering easier play and more maneuverability to steadily build their game. Tennis Community Mourns the Loss of Coaching Legend Nick Bollettieri
Hall of Fame tennis coach Nick Bollettieri, perhaps best known for instructing tennis legends Andre Agassi and Monica Seles, passed away in early December at the age of 91 following a series of recent health issues.
Bollettieri was a fixture in professional tennis well into his 80s. Known for his suntanned skin and wraparound sunglasses, he guided 10 professional tennis players to a number-one ranking, including Agassi, Seles, Venus and Serena Williams, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Maria Sharapova, Marcelo Rios, Martina Hingis and Jelena Jankovic.
Bollettieri opened his Florida coaching academy in 1978 and sold it to IMG in 1987. The IMG Academy now spans more than 600 acres in Bradenton, Florida and offers programs in more than a half-dozen sports in addition to tennis.
“Tennis wouldn’t be where it is today without Nick's influence,” said Jimmy Arias, IMG Academy director of tennis and one of Bollettieri’s original students. “His tennis academy, which I had the privilege of growing up within, not only served as a launching pad for many tennis greats but evolved into an institution that has had a profound impact on the development of athletes across many sports at all levels.”
“Our dear friend, Nick Bollettieri, graduated from us last night,” Agassi posted to Twitter. “He gave so many a chance to live their dream. He showed us all how life can be lived to the fullest... Thank you Nick.”
“Our sport lost one of its most passionate coaches & advocates,” Billie Jean King tweeted. “Nick was always positive & was able to get the best out of everyone fortunate enough to work w/him. Our thoughts & prayers go out to his family & team at the Academy. May he rest in peace.”

Adaptive Tennis National Championships Returns to USTA National Campus in 2022
BY VICTORIA CHIESA/USTA
It was a comeback worth waiting for! In November, the Adaptive Tennis National Championships returned to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida for the first time since 2019, and history was made in the process.
After robust qualifying events were held around the country, competitors from eight USTA sections traveled to Orlando to compete in unified doubles, which features one adaptive player and one unified partner.
“An event like this is life-changing for many of the athletes,” Marcy Hirschberg, the chair of the USTA’s national adaptive tennis committee said. “They look forward to this, they couldn’t be more excited, and it gives them a chance to feel like everybody else and have a great tournament experience. They also to build relationships all over the country.”
Geoff Hedges Racquet Club Director ghedges@bigcanoe.org
Passionate volunteers like Hirschberg are crucial to the success of an adaptive tennis event, and Orlando was no different. In addition to her role as chair of the national adaptive tennis committee, she’s also been a unified partner for nearly 25 years locally in Atlanta with the Special Pops Tennis organization — one of nearly 350 adaptive tennis organizations registered with the USTA nationwide.
“It’s your job as the tennis player to play to the level of the adaptive athletes and make sure that they have a successful, fun, and competitive experience,” Hirschberg said. “At the Adaptive Tennis National Championships, all kind of entities come together and that’s what’s so special about this event. We work with all the USTA sections, D&I [diversity and inclusion] staff, many local programs, and the committee to make this a success.”
For local professionals including Cee Jai Jones, the director of diversity, NJTL (National Junior Tennis and Learning) and grants for USTA Southern, the enhanced collaboration between national and section staff for 2022 that Hirschberg described helped keep the athletes’ experience at the forefront.
“The 2022 National Adaptive Tennis Championships means everything,” Jones said. “I was fortunate to be here for the 2019 nationals, and what a joy that was. But to have a hiatus of about three years before the next one, and then to see some of the athletes that did participate three years ago back, they were hungry for this opportunity. This is something that really surpasses the imagination for a lot of players who are adaptive and would love to have this opportunity.”
Champions were crowned in four playing divisions. Hirschberg and her playing partner, Lawton Kugler, took home victory for USTA Southern in Division 3. They were joined by Brittany Tagliareni and John Richards, representing USTA Florida, who were Division 1 champions; Kevin Olin and Tyler Carroll, also of the Southern section, in Division 2; and Mark Segerman and Jim Lawson, of USTA New England, the winners of Division 4.
But the action on the court was only part of the story of the weekend. USTA national staff also held a workshop to introduce the first-ever adaptive tennis curriculum, which will support providers around the country as they seek to make the sport of tennis more inclusive for all.
The release of this game-changing curriculum was the culmination of two years’ worth of work by many in the USTA and outside of it, including Florida’s Lisa Pugliese-LaCroix. Six years ago, Pugliese-LaCroix founded Love Serving Autism and has since made adaptive tennis her life’s work. With 30 Florida-based chapters and six in other states, the non-profit currently provides specialized, therapeutic tennis instruction to 575 children and 60 adults with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental challenges.

2022 ALTA ANNUAL MEETING 2022 Annual Meeting
BY EMMY POWELL, NET NEWS EDITOR
Most of you know the true backbone of ALTA’s unique organization is its vast number of volunteers. What you might not know is the time commitment of those who choose to serve. We have members who have spent more than 40 years as an ALTA volunteer, 25-year Hall of Fame members, and officers who pledge at least a five-year commitment if voted onto the board to serve as the First Vice President, President, and Board Chairman. It all comes together by those who dedicate their time to help run the ALTA leagues. Many of those members came together at this year’s annual meeting to hear about the numerous accomplishments in 2022, in addition to the recognition of the fine people who make ALTA …ALTA.
ALTA Board Chairman Bill Price kicked off the meeting, citing the strength of the ALTA organization. “2022 has been another great year for The Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association. PostCOVID, we have experienced membership growth to levels above 2019. Junior and Senior leagues have seen the greatest year-over-year increase, and participation in virtually all leagues is up,” he said. Price also acknowledged the importance of ALTA’s volunteers. “From captains to coordinators and overalls, to league VPs, you support over 60,000 active members enjoying all ALTA has to offer. On behalf of the membership, I thank you for all you do.”
One key initiative diligently worked on for the last several years has been a comprehensive plan to expand ALTA’s boundaries to increase participation while reducing travel times. This year,
under the leadership of Sandy Depa, the boundaries committee proposed (and the board approved) a pilot program to allow facilities outside our existing boundaries and annexation area to apply to become an approved ALTA facility. Learn more about this pilot program for 2023 on page 12.
While ALTA’s primary mission is to facilitate league play, there is so much more to the organization. “Via the ALTA Foundation, led this year by Rita Maloof, ALTA makes a significant impact in the community on an annual basis,” said Price. More than $85,000 was awarded through various grants and scholarships in 2022. Some of the recipients include Junior ALTA players who received college scholarships, the Georgia Special Summer Olympics, Pace Academy, Blaze Sports, the ALTA Foundation’s START program (more on page 14), Special Pops, AYTEF, and so many others. You can now make an online donation when you renew your membership at www.altatennis.org.
Price also echoed the sound financial position of ALTA. He thanked ALTA Treasurer Larry Waters and the finance committee for being good stewards of ALTA’s resources. “I am very happy to report to you that financially our organization is in great shape,” said Waters. Nearly all of ALTA’s yearly revenue is from membership dues. This year membership was up 2 percent as of the end of October compared to the same period last year. An integral part of ALTA’s financial success is due to the great work of Leslie Gersack, ALTA’s bookkeeper. “Leslie does an amazing job with all of

our financial transactions and has been a great help to me answering my questions, creating monthly reports and by being a big part of our recent yearly budget process,” said Waters.
Turning his attention to the 2022 ALTA President Lamar Scott, Price recognized the great work done by the Executive Committee under Scott’s leadership. “Lamar and the pickleball committee planned and conducted several pickleball clinics around the city where we exceeded all participation expectations,” he said. “Members, and frankly, the community in general, are excited ALTA is taking a leading role in providing additional opportunities to participate in racquet sports in the Atlanta area.”
Scott helped launch three ALTA Pickleball Clinics/Mixers at 13 facilities, providing introduction to newcomers and welcoming more seasoned players to a social round robin. “Each session sold out within hours, and we were able to connect with more than 640 members, with over 50 on the waiting list,” said Scott. The committee continues to discuss the infrastructure and anticipates launching league play in 2023.
Scott had a busy and successful year, which he said went by way too fast. “Looking back at my term as president, it’s been a great year and an experience that I’ll never forget.” Scott also pointed out that the Atlanta Open was a key
event sponsored by ALTA. ALTA Day included recognition of the ALTA Foundation scholarship winners, the top players on the Junior Challenge Ladder, and a great women’s exhibition match. “I had the opportunity to perform the coin toss for the match between Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin — and what a match it was,” Scott said.
Scott pointed out his key goal to listen and learn from ALTA’s members and volunteers, with the main objectives being to grow the membership and opportunities within ALTA. “We listened to parents and coaches, and late last year, embarked on a Junior Player AA Pilot program that allowed 16- and 17-year-old competitive juniors to play at the AA level in our Men’s, Sunday Women’s, and Mixed Doubles Adult Leagues,” he said. “Initially, 14 junior players took advantage of the program. …And this year, that number doubled to 28 players!
“The exciting part was that half were
girls and half were boys, and the best part is that 90 percent of them moved on to continue to play in an adult league,” Scott continued. He closed by saying, “Tennis has positively impacted so many aspects of my life, and it has been my privilege to give back to the organization that has made all this possible.”
Moving into 2023, the future looks bright for ALTA. That future includes 2023 President Linda Shepherd. Shepherd said serving as president is a dream come true. “I am excited, I am humbled, and I am honored,” she added. She recalls in 2004 when she walked up the steps to the first coordinator’s meeting and walking through the door to a room of laughter, smiles and friendships. “I knew then this was more than a volunteer position. It was a family that I had been asked to join.”
Shepherd reiterated her plan to lead the organization to expand the boundaries and monitor the results. She also echoed the sentiment to find a solid plan for ALTA to incorporate pickleball in the Atlanta area. “You better find a paddle and a pickleball because ALTA is joining the craze,” she said. Shepherd closed out her speech emphasizing the important of service to ALTA’s members. “Our customers are our members. I believe good customer service starts with our leaders. It starts with me, and I’ll do my best to promote and continue our good customer service.”
Following the swearing-in of the 2023 ALTA Executive Committee and several award presentations, Price brought the meeting to a close and thanked the ALTA staff. “While few in number, the support from Renee Bowen, Emmy Powell, Joan Appelbaum, Jena Pace, Michelle Camay, and Leslie Gersack is the best,” he said. He also acknowledged his trusted advisors: Larry Waters, Bob Fitzgerald, Marla Michalewicz, Lamar Scott, Debbie Gaster, and Sandy Depa. Perhaps his most trusted advisor is his wife, Dawn, whom he thanked as well. “Your love, support, and honestly lift me up and keep me grounded all at the same time.”
We are all looking forward to another exciting year for ALTA in 2023!

Stepping Up For ALTA
The 2022 League Coordinators of the Year
BY EMMY POWELL, NET NEWS EDITOR
There is so much time, commitment, and dedication that involves a tremendous workforce behind ALTA’s non-profit organization. One of the many highlights of this year’s annual meeting is recognizing those who go above and beyond for ALTA’s members.
Here are your 2022 ALTA Coordinators of the Year.
Seth Appelbaum
Senior Leagues
Place of Birth: Boston, MA
Career: Sales Management –Wine Business
Senior Leagues Vice President Gina Clance says in her role as VP, she tries to surround herself with experienced ALTA volunteers. “I found myself in need of one more coordinator, and Seth was quick to step up.” She goes on to say that Appelbaum was faced with a few tough situations and handled them like a champ. “He is always ready to learn something new and help out where he is needed.”
If time and money weren’t obstacles, what would be your dream trip destination? A trip around the world.
If you could have a “dream dinner” with three other people, living or dead, who would they be? Queen Elizabeth, Ronald Reagan, and Elon Musk.
What is something you think everyone should try at least once? Tandem skydiving. It is a rush.
Who is your favorite professional tennis player and why? Bjorn Borg – First with numerous grand slam titles and did it as a gentleman with style.
What do you love most about ALTA? My wife. But seriously, the friends I have made.
Bea Blankenship Sunday Women’s League
Place of Birth: Madison, FL
Career: Executive Assistant for the State of Georgia
Sunday Women’s League Vice President Susan Levin says Blankenship is knowledgeable about the rules and works closely with her captains to ensure they’re aware of all the resources available to them to support their teams. “Her positive and bubbly disposition is reflected in her communications with her teams and whatever the situation, she always demonstrates understanding and grace,” Levin says.
If you could have a “dream dinner” with three other people, living or dead, who would they be? I would have dinner with Jesus, my father who has passed away, and Reba McEntire.
What talent do you have that most people don’t know about? I don’t have a talented bone in my body...LOL.
Why did you become an ALTA volunteer? I had recently had ACL surgery and was unable to play tennis. I got a phone call from the Sunday Women’s VP asking if I would be a coordinator. Since I was unable to play (and I have a hard time saying no), I said YES. It has been rewarding, and I have met some amazing people over the years.
Alicia Farley Junior Leagues
Place of Birth: Philadelphia, PA
Career: Telecommunication Sales and Domestic CEO
Junior Leagues Vice President Tammi Copelli says Farley is a silent warrior and extremely deserving of this award. She handles every team, player, or manager issue efficiently, professionally, and without a complaint. “She is always on top of everything.”
If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do? I would book a multigenerational family trip.
If time and money weren’t obstacles, what would be your dream trip destination? Ireland
What is something you think everyone should try at least once? Sushi
What do you love most about ALTA? The team camaraderie!
Why did you become an ALTA volunteer? The first coordinator I had as a captain was so helpful. I thought it would be fun to do the same thing with the Junior League teams and support their managers.

ALTA LEAGUE COORDINATORS OF THE YEAR
Nina Hutcherson
Mixed Doubles League
Place of Birth: Daegu, South Korea
Career: U.S. Navy Veteran, Network Manager before raising kids
Nina Hutcherson is a fairly quiet coordinator, but she does her job on time and does it well, according to Mixed Doubles League Vice President John Lowell. “I spoke to several of her captains, and all were complimentary of her. They said she was responsive even when traveling.” Lowell also says that during City Finals, he noticed that Hutcherson went out of her way to help other ALTA volunteers, as well as work with the players for which she was responsible.
What talent do you have that most people don’t know about? Classical ballet dancer.
If time and money weren’t obstacles, what would be your dream trip destination? To see the Northern Lights.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many people do not know. When I was in the military, I took a traditionally male-oriented job building underwater mines.
Lynn Lee
Senior Day Leagues
Place of Birth: Sandersville, GA
Career: Business Senior Day League Vice President Cathy Gonzales says Lynn Lee continues to set herself apart as she has volunteered with ALTA for more than 20 years. “She is always there when a special need arises, and she does great work with ALTA players competing at City Finals, making them feel comfortable and giving them excellent information. She is wonderful at problem solving shared with a smile.”
If you could have a “dream dinner” with three other people, living or dead, who would they be? Jesus, my mother, and my dad.
What is something you think everyone should try at least once? Anything that scares you but not too dangerous — jet skiing on my 69th birthday was this year! I’d like to try zip lining next year, but I am not interested in sky diving.
Why did you become an ALTA volunteer? I’ve played tennis most of my life. As an adult, I wanted to be a part of an organization that grew from a few players into this world renown organization. ALTA could combine both my interests — business and tennis!
Jane Milton Thursday Women’s League
Place of Birth: California
Career: Hairstylist but mostly a stay-at-home mom Described as one of the truly best coordinators by Thursday Women’s League Vice President Karen Sullivan, Milton is always available to help her teams with any questions or issues they may have, and she does so with a caring and informative approach. “She brings a wealth of knowledge to her position, and I always know her teams are in the best hands,” Sullivan says.
What is something you think everyone should try at least once? Whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River.
If time and money weren’t obstacles, what would be your dream trip destination? High on my bucket list is a trip to the national parks in the Northwest. I visited many of them as a kid but don’t really remember the beauty and experience. I love the outdoors and seeing nature.
What is something you think everyone should try at least once? Whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River.
Stephen Murray Men’s League
Place of Birth: Glen Cove, NY
Career: Consumer Products Sales Management
Men’s League Vice President Mitch Falkin says Murray’s consistent communications with his captains is probably his biggest strength. “He distinguishes between the experienced captain who doesn’t need much handholding, to the brand-new captain who benefits greatly from more attention.” Falkin goes on to say that Murray treats all captains, players, and contemporaries with respect. “Steve is ‘on the ball’ regarding weekly developments and issues throughout the season, is very responsive, and makes significant contributions to ALTA during the off-season by offering excellent suggestions about how to make the Men’s League better.”
If you could have a “dream dinner” with three other people, living or dead, who would they be? Ernest Hemingway, Steven Spielberg and Andre Agassi.
If time and money weren’t obstacles, what would be your dream trip destination? Wimbledon, again!
What is something you think everyone should try at least once? Pfeffernusse cookies.

Registration Information
BY KAREN SULLIVAN, THURSDAY WOMEN’S LEAGUE VICE PRESIDENT
ALTA spring tennis is right around the corner, and it’s always one of the best times of year to enjoy life on the court with your team. I would like to remind you of important dates for the upcoming spring season. Registration for the spring leagues opened on December 29 and will run through Jan. 19, 2023. Schedules become available on March 2, and the Thursday League regular season begins on March 16 and ends on April 27. City Finals will be on May 4 for the AA level while the A, B, and C levels will be on May 11.
There can be such varied weather conditions in the spring, from chilly mornings to some days where it can feel like summer. I encourage you all to be familiar with the rules and procedures for inclement weather as it always seems that spring brings several rain showers!
Please make sure that your membership/contact information is correct on the ALTA website. This is the information that team captains will use to contact you. This is ALTA’s way to keep you up to date with all pertinent league information. It is vitally important to ensure that your email address, phone numbers, and mailing address are all correct.
The ALTA website is a great place to access all the latest
league information, the year’s calendar, adult league rules, and any information related to all ALTA leagues. As a captain, the website is the place to obtain your tracking sheet for the team. This will enable you to note each player’s line position and outcome for each match. The use of the Lineup Checker will inform you if there is a problem with a proposed lineup. The ALTA website also will enable you to publish the lineup to the entire team, and each team member can confirm their availability once the lineup for a match is published. Using the ALTA website can go a long way to help make the job of being captain a little easier!
Finally, one of the most common emails I receive as league VP is players wanting to be removed from a roster. Each team member gets an email informing them when a team captain submits a roster for a specific season. Members need to act in a timely manner if they do not want to be on this roster. Once the roster correction deadline has passed, a player cannot be removed from a roster. This is to ensure the integrity of the league as we assign levels based on the entire roster that is submitted.
I wish you all a great spring season with always sunny tennis days!

Get Ready For The Big Dance … ALTA Men’s Spring Tennis!
BY GREG MCAFEE, MEN’S LEAGUE VICE PRESIDENT
Ihope you are spending your offseason by playing ALTA Mixed Doubles or maybe even some pickleball. Either way, be sure to stay conditioned and ready to play in the spring league. One of the best ways to stay competitive for the upcoming season is to keep playing tennis during the winter months. This helps keep the “rust” off and avoids injuries which lead to defaults during the season. That, in turn, leads to frustrating your captain as he screams, “This was going to be the season we get the plate!” Too dramatic? No problem … just get out there and do something.
Registration for the spring season opened on Dec. 29, 2022. Can you believe it? When you’re making those New Year’s resolutions, how about adding one more? Renew your ALTA membership before the roster deadline so that you won’t be left off the spring roster! You’ll thank me later.
Here are three reminders before you submit your roster:
1. As mentioned above, captains, be sure to get your players to renew their membership before the roster deadline. Oftentimes, players fail to renew, and the roster is submitted, and a team moves down a level making it difficult to get the player added back to the roster.
2. Having a healthy roster size of 17-20 players is needed to avoid defaults during the season. If you are having trouble getting additional players, you can check the ALTA website under your Member Portal > My Resources. Click on the first box > Find Players and Teams. You can filter and locate players who are looking to join a team. Likewise, if you are a player who needs a team, this is a good resource to find those teams in need of players.
3. If your team wishes to move up or down, when submitting your roster, please be sure to click the “Request for Review” box and provide a reason for the move. This is the best way for someone to put eyes on your requested level.
Lastly, we all love to win and enjoy the competitive spirit of tennis but remember, this is a recreational league and is meant to be fun. Things like “sandbagging” and not giving the opponent the benefit of the doubt on close line calls can stir up emotions on court, which can lead to poor sportsmanship. Please be courteous to your opponents and enjoy the challenge of competition when you win and when you lose.

Getting Ready For Spring
BY SUSAN LEVIN, SUNDAY WOMEN’S LEAGUE VICE PRESIDENT
It’s not quite spring yet, but it will be here before we know it. The days will stay lighter longer, the trees begin to leaf out, and the daffodils start peeking out from beneath the cold ground. Yes, all true and all signs of spring. If there is one thing that makes spring different here in metro Atlanta, it’s the thousands of ladies preparing for the ALTA Sunday Women’s spring season. Yes, thousands! Our fall 2022 season had 1,048 Sunday Women’s teams with more than 20,000 ladies on their rosters.
Now that fall is in our rearview mirror, it’s time to begin planning for an exciting spring season of tennis. Players are updating their online ALTA profile to ensure all of their contact information is current, they’re making sure their ALTA membership is up-to-date, and they’re reaching out to their local tennis facility or contacting ALTA captains about joining a Sunday Women’s spring team at their level of play. Not to mention, it’s a great time to start spring training, to participate in those tennis clinics, or get on the court with friends for some social matches.
Sunday Women’s teams comprise all levels. To experience the full enjoyment of tennis, it’s important to be on a team that is your level. If you’re new to ALTA, or if you’re currently not playing at a level that feels like the best fit for your tennis skills, check with a tennis center in your area. Most centers have instructors who will be glad to assist you in determining what level of ALTA may be best for you. In many cases, instructors can introduce you to other ladies at your same skill level or they know teams at your level who may be looking for players. Fortunately, that was my experience when I moved to Atlanta over 20 years ago. I didn’t know how to join an ALTA team or what
level team to join. It was a tennis instructor who introduced me to ALTA, and I’m glad he did.
Our Sunday Women spring registration opened on Dec. 29, 2022 and will close on January 19 of this year. In addition to players preparing for the spring season, team captains of returning teams or new team captains have been busy building their teams as they reach out to each member before adding them to their new spring roster. This is especially important as some members may have moved to another area of town since the fall, or wish to play with a friend on another team, or may wish to move to a different level, etc. Captains will want to review the wealth of detailed information regarding roster registration, submitting a roster, team placement, and other helpful content which is in the ALTA documents: “Roster Registration Information Packet” and the “Adult Captain Handbook.”
With spring just around the corner, what better way to enjoy warm, breezy Sunday afternoons than being on the court for a competitive game of tennis with your team? It’s nice to enjoy the camaraderie of your team, making new friends, healthy competition, and fun-filled exercise. Team spring registration ends Jan. 19, 2023, but ALTA members can join a team any time during the season as long as that team is at or above your current ALTA level rating. Our spring season begins Sunday, March 19 at 1 p.m. If you haven’t already started making your plans for the Sunday Women’s spring season, it’s not too late to start.
We do not play a winter season, so we will start up again in the spring of 2023. Look for a few changes that we’ve been working on this year to grow this fun league.

The True Meaning Of ‘Vintage’
BY JOAN MARCINKO, SENIOR DAY LEAGUES VICE PRESIDENT
Happy New Year everyone!
It has been a few years since I last served on the ALTA Executive Committee, so for me, this new year will present new and exciting challenges. My personal ALTA involvement has spanned almost 25 years, and I have been playing tennis for at least 30 years. Wow, officially I consider myself to be a “vintage” ALTA tennis player! So, those of you who are similar in age (turning 55 or more in 2023) are invited to join me for this spring season of the ALTA Senior Day League.
When I looked up the definition of vintage, there are many different interpretations, but I found one which said it is something between 50-100 years old. That’s us! I hope you will consider joining or rejoining us for this next season as your new and exciting challenge for 2023.
If you are old enough but NOT currently playing in this league, you are missing out on an extremely fun tennis experience. The Senior Day league plays two seasons a year, spring and fall. Our women play three lines on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m., and our men play on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m.
I think the start time for this league is great, allowing most of us to get to our matches without competing in the morning traffic. Also with only three lines, a lot of teams sometimes get three courts and are done in plenty of time to go on to lunch. From a captain’s standpoint, it also is simple to do the lineups with only three lines. How cool is that?
I must confess, the word is getting out, and our league’s popularity continues to soar. So it should make sense that if each year everyone gets older, this could make us the fastest growing league in ALTA! This past fall season, we welcomed 15 new teams with an additional 292 new players to this league. We also added a new level to the women’s league. Yep, we are growing every year. Just make a note that when I coined us as “vintage” players, I’m talking about a mature, smart, crafty group of players who love this game! Does that include you? I hope so.
Registration for the spring Senior Day Leagues opened December 29 and closes January 19. I look forward to seeing you on the courts.

Spring Is In The Air
BY WENDY FEE, JUNIOR LEAGUES VICE PRESIDENT
The flowers will soon begin to bloom as we begin to get pumped up for our 2023 junior season. Once again, the excitement for playing one of the most prestigious sports is finally here.
Registration for the spring season is in full swing, with the hope nothing is going to stop us now as we continue to get back to normal. I think we all appreciate what we had before the pandemic, and it’s time to continue moving forward in a positive way. You can feel the exhilaration in the air.
There is nothing better than seeing kids playing and socializing again. Many sports involve teamwork; tennis is no different, especially in ALTA matches. Having people cheer you on (quietly in juniors) as you battle through the elements, sometimes on chilly or windy days, is one of the highlights. I learned that wearing layers is not just for fashion. Remember, we live in Atlanta and have the craziest of weather! It can be fun to have team shirts or have the team wear the same colors on match days, which adds to the excitement and camaraderie for the team.
Within the Junior League, there is so much room for growth. We always encourage more participation by adding more players to the roster or welcoming new teams to the league. The more, the merrier! The juniors are our future in ALTA, and we love to inspire and welcome more participation. Keep in mind that there are Good Sportsmanship Awards that will be given out at the end of the season. You can nominate a player, a team manager, or a team by emailing your coordinator or to me at juniorvp@altatennis.org. There also are scholarship awards
available later this year for junior tennis players who are college-bound seniors.
The Junior League is comprised of players ages 7-18, and matches are played on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. for the girls, followed by the boys at 3:30 p.m. Registration for the spring season began on Dec. 29, 2022, and will close on January 27 of this year. Schedules will be out February 22. The first scheduled match will be March 11, with the regular season closing on April 22.
Lineups, Lineups, Lineups! If you are an existing team manager or a new team manager or a coach who helps with lineups, there is one thing that is essential to bring to your attention at the start of this season: the use of the Lineup Checker. This is a tool on the ALTA website for lineup configuration. It will keep you from having point deductions due to innocently making an illegal line up with incorrect player movement. The Lineup Checker will not allow a player to go on the scorecard if there is illegal player movement or “sandbagging.” In the past, team managers would think they had the proper lineup, only to find out their mistake post-match and would lose points in the process. I’m happy to say that in 2022 most lineup errors were eliminated but stay vigilant. Your junior players will appreciate keeping all the points they earned.
Please know that whether you are a parent, team manager, coach or coordinator, we appreciate all you do, and we want to thank you for volunteering your time and energy in supporting the junior players of ALTA. We are looking forward to a wonderful, successful, and fulfilling spring season!

JUNIORS TIEBREAK
I was watching an ALTA Juniors 8-game pro set match, and the score reached 7-7. One team said it was time to play a tiebreaker. The other team said they should play two more games. If the score reached 8-8, they should then play a tiebreaker. Which team was right?
Wendy Fee, Junior Leagues Vice President
According to ALTA Junior Rules IV. Dual Meets: All matches will be an 8-game pro set. A match is won when one team wins eight games by a margin of at least two games. If the score reaches 7-7, two games are played. If a team wins both games, the win is scored 9-7. If the score reaches 8-8, a 7-point tie-break is played, and the win is scored 9-8.
SERVICE INTERRUPTION
When serving, if a ball rolls onto the receiver’s court from an adjacent court after the first serve and the receiver goes to remove the ball from the court, does the server get two serves now due to the delay between the first and second serve?
Susan Levin, Sunday Women’s League Vice President
As found in Part 2 of the Friend at Court, The Code, Serving 30, Delays during Service: If the ball rolls onto the court after the first serve and before the service motion has started, “The receiver is the judge of whether the delay is sufficiently prolonged to justify giving the server two serves.”
ALTA strives for all our players to operate in the spirit of good sportsmanship. As a receiver, if you’re not sure if the interruption was long enough, we think you should exhibit that good sportsmanship and offer the server two serves. When the server’s second service motion is interrupted by a ball coming on to the court, the server is entitled to two serves.
ROSTER DESIGNEE
If I make someone a designee on my roster, what access does the designee person have on my team site?
John Lowell, Mixed Doubles League Vice President
ALTA Adult League Member Handbook, Roster Submission, Page 13:
You may select any ALTA member to assist in the management of your team. Designees may be a member who is not on the roster. They can be removed when their assistance is no longer necessary. The “designee” will have the same capabilities on the team roster page as the captain. They can create and see lineups, results, schedules, and all other functions as a team leader.
DOUBLE BOUNCE
My partner hit a shot that looked as if it bounced twice in the opponent’s court. They played it and hit a winner as if it had only bounced once. My partner and I objected and said we had won the point because the ball bounced twice on their side of the court. Who is correct?
Karen Sullivan, Thursday Women’s League Vice President
Referring to USTA Part 2 of Friend of Court, The Code #5, they are. Players make calls on their own side of net. The opponent gets the benefit of the doubt, and since they did not call a “double bounce,” they would win the point.
DID YOU EVER WONDER ABOUT … ?
If you’ve ever had a situation occur in a match where no one on the court knew the rule that applied, send your inquiry to Good Question. ALTA officials answer questions in each issue of Net News and yours could be chosen next. Submit your question, along with your name, league, team name and level to altaeditor@altatennis.org.

Jensens Never Quit!
“Where is the defibrillator?” The day before, during my onboarding, the director of facilities for the resort pointed out to me the various pieces of emergency equipment that included the defibrillator! I knew exactly where it was — right behind the court on my side of the net where Murphy went down.
Iwant to share again an experience I had with my brother a little over a year ago. I had just taken a position as director of racquet sports at the amazing Garden of the Gods resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I was finishing my final week of onboarding when my brother, Murphy, and I were playing an exhibition for the resort’s members and guests.
Everything was going great with loads of dynamic shots and fun trash-talking at the beginning of the match. In the second game, Murphy was serving in the deuce court when I could see his eyes suddenly close. From that point, he crashed backwards with his head taking the final blow from the fall.
Murphy had gone into sudden cardiac arrest and was lying motionless on the court. Fortunately, there were off-duty medical professionals and first responders who were watching the match. By the time I was able to reach Murph, one of the medical professionals asked,
I’m sure that for the rest of my life, I will remember every aspect of those life-and-death moments. Murphy’s heart had stopped and bringing him back to life came down to the extraordinary job of those medical professionals using CPR while the defibrillator was charging. Everything was happening so fast. My deepest concern was after the first time the defibrillator failed to start his heart. The machine had to recharge and those moments were the longest and most stressful. The first responders would call out the pulse readings from various parts of his body, and there was nothing positive coming back after every pop from the defibrillator.
During these precious moments, the medical professionals asked Murphy’s wife, Kate, for his medical history and for me to keep speaking with him to keep him with us. The only thing that I could think of was a saying we grew up with: “Jensens never quit!” Over and over, I screamed at him while the first responders worked to save his life. There was a point in the process where they looked up at me and asked if they could break his ribs to apply even more pressure to his chest. My only thought and response was “yes!”
It took 17 minutes to revive Murphy on the court. On the ride to the hospital, he flatlined once again before the medics were able to stabilize him and get a consistent heartbeat. Once Murphy made it into the emergency room, a team
jumped into action to stabilize his heart and evaluate his situation. Murphy’s doctor then explained that his concern was the multiple fractures to the back of my brother’s skull. The doctor was alarmed about a brain bleed that could have led to brain damage. He decided to put Murphy into a coma to prevent the brain bleed from overwhelming the brain.
It was at that point where the power of faith and positivity became all we had left. Because of COVID, only Kate and I were allowed in Murphy’s room. Murphy’s dear friend Gavin Rossdale (from the band Bush) would sing to him via FaceTime. The entire tennis world from Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Chris Evert, John McEnroe, and Billie Jean King, constantly texted me for updates. I was blown away by the enormous support when the family needed it the most.
On the fourth night before visiting hours closed, I had just finished reading to Murphy when he squeezed my hand. The next morning, I arrived to find him responding to doctors’ commands and beginning his extraordinary comeback. “Miracle Murph” is with us today because of extraordinary first responders. He walks this planet because the Garden of the Gods Resort had a defibrillator on the court
Now, every time I walk into a tennis facility, I locate the defibrillator. Murphy has since partnered with the American Heart Association and the Steven M. Gootter Foundation to make sure every tennis facility is equipped with a defibrillator. You don’t realize you need that defibrillator until you need a defibrillator!

Doubles Talk!
BY AMY BARTLETT-O’CONNELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR-USTA ATLANTA
It’s no secret that Atlanta is known as the “Tennis Capital of the World.” There are more league players in our city than anywhere else. There are many options when it comes to the league or program that you can join, and more often than not, the format will include doubles. It’s always fun and comforting to play with your partner of many seasons. This person knows your game and what to expect. But what about those times when you join a team and are paired with someone unfamiliar? I want to share some quick tips on how to be the best partner you can be when you are playing with someone new.
Communication
Communication is critical to new partnerships. Before the match, ask your partner some key questions such as: which side are they most comfortable receiving from? What is their style (will they rush the net, serve and volley, or hang out at the baseline)? What can you expect from their serve? By asking some basic questions you will get an idea of how your partner is wired and what to expect. Communication also is important during the match. Whether it’s between points or on the changeover, keep the communication flowing so that you can

best to support your partner. I also encourage you to walk together to retrieve balls or to change sides of the net. Constant communication not only helps you get to know your partner, but also portrays a seasoned team that has played together before.
Stay Positive
There’s nothing more awkward or embarrassing than playing with a new partner when they lose their cool. It is important that you speak encouraging words to your partner and stay positive towards yourself when errors are made. Whether the score is in your favor or not, make sure to use words like “we” or “us” instead of “I” or “you.” Using this language can help reinforce the partnership and team effort. Positive self-talk and body language can translate into strong performance. Negative self-talk and body language can deteriorate a doubles team and performance at a spiraling rate!
High Percentage
One fundamental way to start a match with a new partner is to focus on high-percentage shot selection. Staying consistent with crosscourt returns that are deep in the court
Playing with someone new doesn’t have to be intimidating, and if you communicate well, stay positive, and go for high-percentage shots, you will be a desirable partner.
will give your partner confidence to move forward and become active at the net. If you plan to surprise your opponent by going down the line or hitting a lob, then give your partner a heads up so they can be ready if things don’t go as planned.
You also will be a strong partner if you maintain a high first-serve percentage. By consistently getting the point started by a first serve, you will allow your opponent to feel confident by starting the point on offense. Talking to your partner about your serve and return placement can help them be prepared and position themselves in the best way to help you win.
Until Next Time
Playing with someone new doesn’t have to be intimidating, and if you communicate well, stay positive, and go for highpercentage shots, you will be a desirable partner. Atlanta doubles play is the most active in the world, and I believe it is because of our amazing tennis community and the relationships that are made through tennis. So, the next time a new team is forming, be ready to raise your hand and get in the game!

Timely Tennis Tips!
BY BRYAN SHEPHERD, OWNER BRYAN’S RACQUET
With the allowance of on-court coaching at the professional level, why not coach each other in doubles on changeovers with short phrases to ponder, strategize, and then implement during your matches? Consider the following tactics with your doubles partner:
CALIBRATE TO DEVASTATE
Practice a swing that makes the ball land around the service line. That same swing works when you are at the service line and keeps the ball deep. Anything closer is a volley! No balls missed deep!
If your opponent is closing, that same swing keeps the ball low and they must volley up!
WANNA LOB?
Aim for the farthest corner, longest distance to out of bounds. Too often, the lob is a straight-line lob that lands just out of
bounds. Avoid this by aiming for the far corner!
VOLLEY ANYONE?
Practice volleys and dropshots that bounce twice before reaching targets. Then incorporate this strategy into your matches as opponents only get one bounce!
M&M MAKE ‘EM MOVE
Most errors happen in transition deep to short forehand to backhand. Utilize this pattern.
ALTER CONFIGURATION, CHANGE COURT DIMENSIONS
Change where you stand. I had a team that did not lose a match for five years! One of them never hit a ball from the ad court. They used the Piggyback/Australian formation when serving. Her partner served from the center hash and net part-
ner immediately slid into the ad court! This tactic is legal and was good for at least two games every set!
EMPTY BOX TENNIS
The court in doubles is divided into four rectangles, two occupied and two unoccupied at start of most points. When serving, the ball must land in the service box. Return the same way. This impacts the server by forcing movement. Once you have manipulated the serve team by moving the server in, probe the middle or lob. Play to the empty box!
OFFSET FEET
Keep your feet “unparalleled” at the ready stance. Check out Bianca Andreescu when returning serve. Her feet are offset. This promotes bended knees and stepping into your shots! I have discovered that I am more prepared by offsetting my feet, and thus, am in position to play

either forehand or backhand properly because the feet move instinctively.
TILT AND LIFT
At net, tilt to open your racquet face off the bounce. Lift to clear the tape! We are always doing one of two things: tilting for volleys and lifting for groundstrokes. Keep the game simple and fewer things go wrong under duress! This relieves the stress!
PLAY IN THE DIRECTION YOU ARE MOVING
Keep your body out of the way. Face where the ball is coming back from when you make your shot!
On the move, play the ball in the direction you are moving. It will keep the body out of the way on the shot and place you in a position to defend because you are facing where the ball is coming back from!

BE BRAVE TO STEAL SOME EXTRA POINTS
BY STEPHEN HUSS, PROGRAM DIRECTOR, HUSS 75 76 TENNIS AT CROOKED CREEK
Ifully believe that when a tennis player either holds or loses their serve that their partner should take a lot of responsibility for either outcome. As the net player, it is your job to disrupt the returner, put doubt in their mind, and occasionally do what most are not brave enough to do … poach on the second serve and put away a volley!
Try and identify the player on the other side of the net who has the weaker return, or weaker forehand or backhand and do the unexpected and poach off your partner’s serve when they are hitting this shot.
This small detail can be the difference between holding serve and losing serve and can positively affect the match outcome in your favor.
So, I challenge all you ALTA players to steal some points this coming season.

Your Tennis New Year’s Nutrition Goals For An Energized 2023!
BY PAGE LOVE, MS, RD, CSSD, AND ALLISON FOLEY, DIETETIC INTERN
So it is that time of year again…thinking about getting that training diet in shape for the New Year. To build on previous nutrition articles, we have provided an updated list of key sport nutrition reminders with a sport-intuitive approach to fueling to help you develop those healthy habits to peak with your tennis performance. As you are coming off some possible holiday over-eating, consider starting with tuning in to your body’s needs more directly with the following tips:
Post-holiday hunger cues
With the holiday times packed with gatherings, busy shopping days, and change of scheduled meal consistency, it is easy to feel lost with hunger cues. Not listening to natural hunger cues can cause us to eat more than the body needs. The hunger scale system can help you learn how to distinguish the difference between true physical hunger and emotional hunger initiated by stress, boredom, happiness or celebration, or sadness. The hunger scale ranges from 1-10, with the lower end feeling starving, weak, or dizzy and the higher end feeling so full you feel sick.
The goal is to fuel yourself when your hunger cues are within the 3-4 range and not waiting to eat until you get down to the 1-2 range when blood sugar is lower and you may make fewer healthy choices. Waiting until feeling irritable with low energy can lead to eating more than your body needs and not making the best sport nutrition fueling choices. When eating, it is important to stop and think about how hungry you are and where you gauge on the scale to make mindful effort of when to
stop. A guideline is to stop when you no longer feel hungry nor full, but satisfied, or a little full feeling (a 6-7 on the hunger scale), which would also be a good place to stop in pre-fueling for your tennis matches.
Fad diets, such as intermittent fasting, can cause long periods without fueling the body and lead to ignoring natural hunger cues — not ideal for the weekend warrior tennis athlete! It is a great idea to plan to eat something at least every 3-4 hours to stay fueled, especially before and after your training. Finding that happy medium on the hunger scale will be beneficial to fueling your body adequately. Consider this guide as your new approach to fueling in the New Year.
Intuitive Hydration
Hydration is so important on and off the court! Staying hydrated plays a role in overall performance, injury prevention, and recovery for athletes. Strive to consume at least 1 cup of hydrating fluids per hour by drinking water, sport beverages, decaffeinated tea or coffee, and eating soups or hydrating fruit like melon or cucumbers. Another great way to stay hydrated before and during play time is by adding Liquid IV or Nuun to your water to increase electrolytes and hydration. An easy way to tell if you are adequately hydrated is by looking at urine color — is it medium-dark yellow? If so, it is past time to hydrate, so grab a couple glasses of water! Aim for lightyellow urine as this indicates adequate hydration; but not clear, as clear urine is a sign of overhydration which can be dangerous. Additionally, over the holidays, alcohol consumption comes into play for many and it is important to curb intake and choose better hydrating options that will set you up for success on the court! Consider those NA beers as better post-match hydration choices!

Jumpstart your training diet
New Year’s healthy eating goals can be beneficial for training performance. One favorable diet for training is the Mediterranean-style diet, one of the few research-supported eating approaches for overall health, disease prevention, and also high energy fueling! The Mediterranean diet is more of a lifestyle approach to eating that promotes high-quality and higher fiber carbohydrates and whole grains, lean meats and fish high in omega 3’s, legumes, fresh fruits and veggies… all great ideas for fueling and recovery for tennis athletes! Some advantages of the Mediterranean diet include varied food choices that are attainable; increased antioxidant intake with anti-inflammatory benefits, sparking the metabolism; and improved healing and strength of muscles with lean protein.
Pre-fuel and prepare for the court
Part of upping
your game
is ensuring you are prefueled and ready to go beforehand. Having adequate and appropriate complex carbohydrate intake prior to a match is imperative for peak performance! Pre-match meals should be 2-3 hours before matches and should be easy to digest complex carbs mentioned above, such as oatmeal or bagel for breakfast or rice, potato, and/ or pasta if later in the day! One- to two-cup volume of the complex carbohydrate food in a meal taking up ½ of your plate volume should be consumed along with a lean protein source like a poached egg or grilled chicken breast or lean meat sauce and a small amount of cooked vegetable or fruit choice (each of these components taking up ¼ of your plate). Then, a pre-match snack to consider can be a quick option such as Skratch bars or Skout bars that are packed with real, nonGMO ingredients like peanuts, coconut, quinoa, berries, and oats. Packing bars in your racquet bag prepares you for your game by topping off your
Recover and rebuild your muscles
Post-fueling your body is equally as important as pre-fueling. However, the choices should proportionally be higher in protein within 15-30 minutes to rebuild the muscles that have just been used on the court! Respond to your hunger cues quickly and try a higher protein recovery snack such as a Clif Builder bar or Onwyn vegan plant-based protein shake. And don’t forget chocolate milk — always an appropriate choice, even a vegan alternative such as Ripple chocolate milk or Silk Protein almond milk! After a snack, don’t forget to follow up with a healthy high-protein, high-complexcarbohydrate meal such as Mediterranean-inspired quinoa bowl with roasted salmon, tzatziki sauce with Greek yogurt, assorted fresh veggies, and feta cheese!

Buckeyes For The Win
Peanut Butter Chocolate Tennis Balls
Doug Ford, Fieldstone Men C4
2 lbs. peanut butter (smooth/creamy)
1 ½ lbs. margarine (6 sticks, make sure they are refrigerated)
3 lbs. confectioner’s sugar
24 oz. choc chips — semi sweet
1 bar paraffin (a bar is usually about 3 inches x 5 inches and half-an-inch thick)
Place all the confectioner’s sugar into bowl. Dump the peanut butter on top of the confectioner’s sugar. Slice the sticks of margarine into squares and then dump them into bowl with sugar and peanut butter. Mix above ingredients using an electric mixer until consistently blended. Use a melon baller to scoop into in balls and place on a sheet of wax paper atop a cookie sheet. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Then, cut or break the bar of paraffin wax into 8-10 pieces (helps it melt faster and more evenly). Place the paraffin pieces into a pot set on med/high (You can use a double boiler if you have one.). When the paraffin becomes about 75% liquid, add the chocolate chips and stir vigorously until the wax and the chocolate chips appear smoothly blended. (If you use a metal spoon, be careful as the spoon will heat up quickly.). Using a toothpick, quickly dip each of the peanut butter balls about halfway into the chocolate sauce and return each ball back to the wax paper until all the balls are dipped. You can refrigerate them if you want or leave them out at room temperature.
Never Outdated Balls of Energy
Debra Wright, Jefferson Township Thursday Women A5
2 ¼ cup coarsely chopped pitted dates
¾ cup puffed rice cereal
¾ cup smooth peanut butter
3 Tbsp. sesame seeds or crushed cereal pinch of salt
Pulse first 3 ingredients, plus the salt, in food processor 10-20 times for one minute until the mixture is crumbly but can be pressed into a ball. With wet hands, take about 1 Tbsp. of mixture and press into a ball. Roll in toasted sesame seeds or crushed cereal. Place in storage container, which can be kept in the refrigerator.
Hand-held & Savory Sausage Tennis Balls
Stacy Sheets, DeKalb TC Sunday Women C1
1 pound ground pork sausage
2 cups biscuit baking mix
1 pound sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Combine sausage and biscuit mix. Add shredded cheddar cheese. Roll into about 30 walnut-sized balls; transfer to a baking sheet. Bake at 350 until golden brown, about 20 to 25 minutes.
