PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Things Are Heating Up Around Atlanta & ALTA This Summer!

O

ur summer leagues are underway, and we are seeing signs that ALTA league tennis is returning to normal. We introduced a modified City Finals format in the spring that brought teams back to a central location for finals in most of our leagues. Our registration numbers are up in all the summer leagues, surpassing pre-COVID totals. Many teams are beginning to offer food again at matches. These ALTA spreads are legendary! Hospitality and team camaraderie are part of what ALTA is known for, and they have been missed over the last year. While things are looking up, we still have some COVID guidelines which can be found on our website. The restrictions regarding spectators that were in place at many of the facilities have been lifted, and we have returned to our previous format of best two out of three full sets. I know that many of you are happy to see this change. For those who prefer the 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a full third set, it is still an option, provided all four players agree. One other exciting happening this summer in Atlanta is the return to professional tennis. The Truist Atlanta Open will run from July 24 through August 1, and ALTA is proud to once again be a sponsor of this event. The tournament promises to be a great experience for all tennis fans. Be sure to check out all of these great events and VIP opportunities,

in addition to the week’s schedule, which is included in this issue of Net News. Tickets are still available, and there are discount offers for ALTA members. Please check our website for details and discount codes. ALTA Day is Monday, July 26, and we hope to see many of you there. On this day, we will recognize our L. Keith Wood Memorial Scholarship recipients as well as some of our top Junior Challenge Ladder participants. We will also have some great prizes and giveaways at the tournament, so be sure to stop by the ALTA booth throughout the week. Besides the many changes that have occurred as we try to get back to the things we enjoy about ALTA, we are continuing to review our procedures for league play. Over the last few years, we have received many requests to eliminate the exchange of a new can of tennis balls after the match. It has become confusing for many players, perhaps due to differences in the rules of the various tennis leagues in which our members participate. Beginning with the fall season in all ALTA adult leagues, the home team will provide the tennis balls and there will be no ball exchange at the conclusion of the match. Speaking of fall, be sure to enter your rosters now, as league registration is open for adults and juniors. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

For the latest news, information and events.

HEARD AROUND ATLA NTA

A Smashing Success for Education Talk about a great fundraiser — and for an extremely worthwhile cause. The Cartersville Country Club played host to a golf tournament fundraiser for the Bartow County Cass High School’s International Studies Magnet Program back in April. Three weeks before the event, Tournament Director Andrea Surcey decided to maximize the fundraising effort and added a tennis mixer for later in the evening. “I thought it would be a good idea to include folks who play tennis as a way to raise awareness for the Magnet Program, and it was a big hit,” says Surcey. Surcey says in very short order, they were able to secure about 10 fence sponsors, food and drink sponsors, and some great raffle prizes. ALTA and the Truist Atlanta Open donated koozies and some autographed items from Andy Roddick and Robby Ginepri. Organizers were able to fill the 24 tennis player spots, and everyone enjoyed great music and fabulous food catered by Chicken Salad Chick. Players were treated to a tennis scramble challenge where they played one set of doubles. The winners

moved up one court, and the losers moved down one court and would then switch partners each set. Surcey says the players had a blast. “I know we had more fun than the golfers that day,” she joked. The money raised from both tournaments will benefit a unique program at the high school’s Center for Advanced International Studies. The program focuses on teaching students to be multicultural leaders in Bartow County and beyond. Students are applying and developing cultural knowledge and language skills through multiple study abroad trips that take them to all corners of the globe. They also have the opportunity to work with Cass High School community partners, a program which matches students with local companies that have an international footprint in hopes those partners will help facilitate communication to establish foreign exchange networks. Cass offers four bi-lingual programs in French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and American Sign Language.

Joyce Butler to Retire After Serving ALTA Nearly 40 years She is by far one of the most respected, admired, and extraordinary volunteers in ALTA’s history, and now she has decided to retire as a volunteer after nearly 40 years of service. Joyce Butler was always an incredible athlete. Whether it was skiing, swimming, skating, or hiking, she participated in nearly every sport growing up — except tennis. That all changed at the ripe young age of 40 when she first picked up a racquet and joined ALTA in 1976. It was only a few years later that longtime and wellknown volunteer Bert Ardoyno asked her to a be coordinator. That would lead to decades of volunteering as a coordinator in both the Mixed Doubles and Thursday Women’s League, in addition to serving on the ALTA Foundation. Butler will turn 85 in November, and while she no longer plays tennis, she still gets together with old teammates and friends. Some of her fondest memories include playing tennis out of her neighborhood of Embry Hills in DeKalb County. “We always had the best food in town. I’m known for my cucumber sandwiches. My recipe was even printed in Net News,” Butler recalls. She is notorious for always entering the Net News contests, and in fact, she has won twice. One included a trip to the Family Circle Cup when it was played in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She also won a pair of tennis shoes. “I still have those tennis shoes, so I’ll sometimes wear them to work in the yard.” Butler says ALTA has been such a big part of her life. “There is nothing quite like ALTA. It’s such a unique organization where you make lasting friendships.” Some of those friendships include her fellow volunteers. Bert and Sadie Ardonyo have been ALTA volunteers for 43 years. “We’ve been friends with Joyce since she started as a coordinator.” They served on the ALTA Executive Committee when she and Charlie (her late husband) were Mixed Doubles Vice Presidents. "I [Bert]

nominated Joyce as an elected member of the first ALTA Foundation. It’s been a pleasure being Joyce’s friend for the 40 years she has been involved with ALTA.” Known for her impressive moves on the dance floor, Butler’s former colleagues still are in awe of her moves. Former Mixed Doubles VP Kirsten Sykes worked with her in both the Thursday Women’s and Mixed Doubles Leagues. “I have always been in awe of her vitality, her knowledge, and her commitment to ALTA,” she said. “I will miss seeing her at ALTA events, but trust she will continue to dance to her

favorite music and enjoy every day with those she loves.” Longtime coordinator Lori Gangwisch also served in both the Thursday and Mixed Doubles Leagues with Butler and echoes that sentiment. “She is who I want to be when I grow up. Continuing to play tennis, dancing, volunteering and learning new things as the years went on are only some of the reasons I admire her so,” she says. Everyone with ALTA is wishing her all the best as she will be greatly missed. “Joyce was one of the first people I met at ALTA and was so kind to me as I learned the ropes. She is a joy to be around and is always so kind to others. We will greatly miss her in each season, but wish her the best in her retirement from ALTA,” says Cameron Turner, 2021 Mixed Doubles VP.

NCAA Approves Sora Virtual High School Atlanta-based private virtual high school Sora announced recently that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has approved its online curriculum. The decision paves the way for Sora students to participate in sports at the collegiate level in the future. “A majority of our families find the flexible nature of Sora appealing, but for those with dedicated student-athletes, the ability to set their schedules is a virtual necessity,” said Wesley Samples, co-founder of Sora. “Our program isn’t entirely asynchronous, but there’s ample opportunity for student-athletes to schedule their classes around practice and games as needed.” The decision enables the school to reach out to those families who want the assurance their student will have the ability to compete at the next level. “We approached various sports academies in 2020, and the NCAA approval stamp was the first question we often received, so this is obviously a step in the right direction for us,” said Indra Sofian, co-founder at Sora. “Since the NCAA’s decision, we’ve already begun stepping up our marketing efforts to these families and sports academies.”

Professional Sports Registry Set to Debut The Professional Sports Registry (PSR), a newly formed organization dedicated to better serving coaches who are certified in two or more sports, is set to debut this summer. PSR will provide premium member benefits, education, and cost savings for teaching professionals/coaches in tennis, pickleball, and platform tennis. From there, PSR is looking to expand into padel (paddle tennis), squash, fitness, aquatics, and possibly other sports. PSR Chairman and PTR Immediate Past President Rodney Harmon stated, “PSR will be focused on member service and satisfaction with the primary goal of improving the professional lives of coaches worldwide.” Initially, PSR membership requires certification in tennis (PTR) and either pickleball (PPR) and/or platform tennis (PPTR). Those who have attained certification in two sports will be designated as “Dual Impact” professionals. PSR members who have three certifications (PTR/PPR/PPTR) will be listed as “Triple Threats.” According to leading club employment recruiter KK&W’s Len Simard, “being a dual impact professional will be the minimum hiring qualification at top facilities mov-

ing forward with the preference toward attaining Triple Threat status in certain parts of the country.” PSR will provide substantial cost savings through the bundling of multiple memberships. Hemel Cosme, PSR Board member and club owner stated, “It will be much easier for our members to manage their certifications with one organization to meet their professional needs, which is important with everyone’s busy schedule.” According to PSR CEO, Dan Santorum, “PSR is a significant step forward in improving the career pathway, employment opportunities, and compensation structure for dedicated coaches. All PSR members have passed a background check and are incentivized to continue their education in their professions. Also, the certification bodies that PSR is At Georgia Power, we believe fans have the power to impact matches and change communities. The Slinger brand ambassador team is led by Tommy Haas, former ATP No. 2 ranked player and Olympic silver medalist, who was named chief ambassador earlier this year. The team also includes the most successful doubles tennis players of all time, Bob and Mike Bryan, as well as tennis coaching icon, Nick Bollettieri. Mouratoglou will bring his years of experience in the game as a top coach to further Slinger Bag’s global brand initiatives and growth. Mouratoglou, world renowned and widely acclaimed as the coach of Serena Williams, founded the Mouratoglou Academy in 1996 near Paris where he worked alongside up-and-coming players such as Marcos Baghdatis and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, many of whom rose to prominence under his guidance. Williams began her training under Mouratoglou in 2012 and went on to win her fifth, sixth, and seventh Wimbledon titles; two Olympic gold medals; her fourth, fifth, and sixth US Open titles; regain her world No. 1 WTA ranking, and much more. “As a coach, I am always looking for new and unique train-

ing equipment — equipment that has the ability to assist players, across all levels, to improve their game,” said Mouratoglou. “Today, although I now predominantly train high-level athletes, I continue to value and appreciate brands that think outside of the box and create products that support younger players in realizing their talent. Slinger Bag is unique, in that it is a product I would use with my current professional athletes, but would also recommend to younger players just starting their careers.” “We’re delighted to bring Patrick, a globally renowned and respected tour coach, into our Slinger Bag family as a member of our global ambassador team,” said Mike Ballardie, CEO of Slinger Bag. “Patrick brings with him a lifetime of experience in tennis, in coaching, and training top players and a shared vision to disrupt the traditional tennis market and make tennis appealing to a much younger audience and in doing so, to stimulate improvement and enjoyment for players at all levels.”

The Truist Atlanta Open Is Back!

BY RICK LIMPERT

tlanta tennis fans can once again make plans for where they will be come the end of July. Live professional tennis is set to return to Atlanta and Atlantic Station this summer at the 2021 Truist Atlanta Open, running from July 24 to August 1. The event’s best singles and doubles draw in its history is expected, as is an exciting women’s Sunday Showdown exhibition on the opening Sunday evening, featuring US Open champions Kim Clijsters and Sloane Stephens. Clijsters is making her first Atlanta appearance. The 2021 event will strictly adhere to all CDC, state, and local health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe experience throughout the venue. Tournament Director Eddie Gonzalez is glad to be back. He says along with the tennis their focus is putting a premium on safety. “I could not be more excited about live tennis and in-person attendance at Atlantic Station this summer. These are the best tennis players in the world, and we have the best tennis fans in the world. We are working with local officials, the city of Atlanta, and our medical advisors to offer a safe, healthy and fun event to all involved, from the players to sponsors, fans, officials, volunteers, and staff.” Five-time Atlanta singles champion, John Isner was the first player committed to the draw. “I’m looking forward to seeing

all the Georgia Bulldog and tennis fans in Atlanta this July!,” he said. “Missing a year is making it even more special. Atlanta has always been the start of my U.S. summer hard court season, and I’ll be shooting for another Truist Atlanta Open title in 2021!” Isner will be joined by two fellow Americans looking for their first Atlanta title, Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka. Fritz, a native of Rancho Santa Fe, California, is currently the highest ranked American by the ATP at No. 31. He was a singles finalist in 2019, losing in two close sets to Alex de Minaur. So far in 2021, the 6’4” righty has reached the semifinals in events at Doha and Cagliari. He reached a career-high ranking of No. 24 in 2020. The big-serving Opelka has been a fixture in the ATP top-50 since mid 2019. He returns to the site of his first ATP semifinal with two career singles titles and an opportunity to rise up the rankings. Opelka just reached his first ATP 1,000 semifinal in Rome. The Delray Beach, Florida resident plays his best tennis on hard courts and being 6’11” helps his serve and return in the summer heat. Opelka has said on numerous occasions that the summer conditions in Atlanta suit his game. “It’s important we have the best Americans in Atlanta at the Truist Atlanta Open,” said Gonzalez. “Taylor and Reilly have supported our event with not only their play on the court, but also by participating in activations and events with our patrons and partners.”

The Truist Atlanta Open annually features tennis’ version of “Rocky Balboa,” or just the opportunity of a lifetime for one of the best college players in the country — “College Night” at the 2021 Truist Atlanta Open. The University of Georgia’s Trent Bryde was offered the main draw singles wildcard. Bryde is a junior on the tennis team, playing No.1 singles this season. Nationally, he is Georgia’s highest-ranked player in both singles (No. 12) and doubles (No. 8/Tyler Zink). Bryde led the Bulldogs into the NCAA team tournament and also qualified for the NCAAs in singles and doubles. “I’ve been playing in the qualifier of this since I was 15 years old,” said Bryde upon accepting the wildcard. “Eddie Gonzalez is a tournament director that wants to give opportunities to young players. It’s so big for us to jump-start our career and I can’t wait to play the top guys in the world. It’s going to be a fun night.” Along with players, having a title sponsor with strong Atlanta ties benefits everyone. “At Truist, supporting our communities is among the ways we deliver on our purpose of inspiring and building better lives and communities,” said Jenna Kelly, Truist Northern Georgia Regional President. “The Truist Atlanta Open is a major event that brings great tennis to Atlanta and also helps give back to our community. We are excited to see professional tennis back in Atlanta again at Atlantic Station this summer.” 2021 is shaping up to be a big return to Atlantic Station. Don’t miss any of the action.

Diane O’Brien

Diane O’Brien Retires After Years of Service to ALTA BY EMMY POWELL, NET NEWS EDITOR

S

o many people in the ALTA family have left such a legacy and an important mark in ALTA’s history books. One such person is Diane O’Brien, who is retiring as office manager after 16 years and following years of volunteer service in multiple roles. O’Brien started playing ALTA in the 1980’s. It was Miriam McGee who convinced O’Brien to become a volunteer in 1996. McGee was the 2001 ALTA President and later asked O’Brien to become her president’s appointee. When McGee became chairman of the board in 2005, she hired O’Brien as office manager. 2005 President Cherri McDonald worked with McGee during the hiring process and says she suggested O’Brien for the position because she was the type of person who could handle any issues within the organization. “She was fastidious in her duties. Diane exhibited a love of tennis, the game, and most importantly, ALTA, the organization,” says McDonald. Longtime front desk administrator Renee Bowen and O’Brien both used to live in Windsor Oaks but never really ran into each other because they played in different leagues. “I can tell you the neighborhood would beg her to play in our Labor Day and Memorial Day tournaments,” Bowen recalls. “She was a high A player with a wicked slice spin.” Great memories of match play and the long-lasting friendships that developed from playing on her tennis teams are just some of the things O’Brien enjoyed most about ALTA. “Particularly my Thursday Women’s team who remained together for years, working our way up from C1 to AA3,” says O’Brien. Bowen began working in the ALTA office (also in 2005) after O’Brien was hired. “Diane has an incredible work ethic, and her attention to detail is something you don’t see in a lot of people. If you gave her any task or project, it would be done on time and correctly,” says Bowen. Many say one the most impressive things about O’Brien was her involvement and her passion for

NETNEWS JULY/AUGUST 2021

O’Brien’s retirement plans include more travel, as she has a safari trip planned for this August. She plans to see more of her three children and grandchildren, learn to speak Spanish, join a pickleball league, and volunteer.

the Wheelchair and Run ‘n Roll Leagues. She was VP of Special Programs in 2001/2002; she never missed a City Finals. O’Brien would even use her vacation time to volunteer at a lot of the wheelchair tournaments here in Georgia and in other Southern cities and would even host them at her home in Marietta if there was a tournament nearby. “I have many fond memories of that volunteer experience, and I developed many wonderful friendships that exist today with the players,” says O’Brien. One of the biggest undertakings that O’Brien was involved with was the 2017 sale of the long-time ALTA office building in Sandy Springs. Larry Waters, as ALTA’s chairman, helped manage the sale and transition to the current office space in Roswell. Waters says he knew he would need a lot of help, and “Diane jumped in.” During the move, O’Brien took on the challenge to work with the office staff and go through years of old files and find a place for old furniture and office equipment. “Diane had the idea to donate items to non-profit organizations, and thanks to her, several organizations benefited,” says Waters. He adds that he felt so strongly about how much she contributed and helped him during his presidential year in 2015 that he chose O’Brien for the President’s Award. “When I think of Diane and her association with ALTA, I think organization, helpful, commitment, and a strong protector of ALTA’s name, brand and funds,” says Waters. ALTA IT Manager Joan Appelbaum met O’Brien when they were both Thursday coordinators. Appelbaum says because of the planned rotation of the volunteers, including a new president and chairman each year, it was important for O’Brien to keep everyone on track with their responsibilities “She set the bar really high and included herself in doing what she thought was best to maintain consistency for ALTA,” says Appelbaum. O’Brien says what she enjoyed most about having been office manager was meeting and working with ALTA’s volunteers, many of whom held full-time jobs but still gave so much of their time and energy to an organization. “ALTA will always hold a special place in my heart. Though I will miss working with such a great, one-of-a-kind tennis organization, I am looking forward to my next chapter in life with much excitement and anticipation.” Congratulations, Diane, and best of luck in the future. You will be greatly missed

ell, it has been 16 months since we lived our daily lives without considering masks, hand sanitizer, and keeping our distance from others outside our immediate family. It has been 16 months since stopping ourselves as we start to greet our friends and teammates with hugs and handshakes. It is time to get ready for Thursday Women’s tennis this fall! Let’s anticipate routines without some of the constant considerations under which we have been laboring. Let’s hope that our lives will have returned to a more normal, less regimented space. With the vaccines doing their part, and the decline in COVID cases, let’s look forward to warm, sunny fall days spent outdoors with friends, playing a sport we all love! Let’s look forward to fun competition, and perhaps even the opportunity to linger after a match to catch up with our teammates. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Be sure to sign up your Thursday team roster beginning July 1. Thursday season play is

scheduled to begin September 9 and runs through October 21. City Finals will be held November 4. As always, please check with your facility manager before registering your team there. Some facilities are limiting space, so make sure you have selected a site that can accommodate your team. If your team needs to move to another location, check that it is an approved ALTA facility, and submit an inspection request online if it is not currently an approved site. Be sure to submit your request in plenty of time to get the courts inspected prior to the registration deadline on July 22. Even as we move forward with our new normal and have adopted some new daily routines, let’s enjoy the camaraderie and physical activity that each tennis season brings. Let’s begin anew and experience the hope that this season will be the season that we go all the way to City Finals and bring home the ALTA plate! I hope this for each and every one of you this fall. Enjoy yourselves!

The Full Third Set Is Back! BY MITCH FALKIN, MEN’S LEAGUE VICE PRESIDENT

Photos by Laura Barnard

O

K guys, you asked for it and you got it. Our old friend, the full third set, is back for the fall Men’s League season! No longer must the outcome of a close match be determined by a 10-point super tiebreak, where anyone can get lucky for a few points in a row and steal a victory. It is official: We are returning to our pre-COVID format of best two of three sets. Here’s the deal: If teams split the first two sets, a full third set is to be played unless all four players in that match agree to play a 10-point tiebreak. And FYI, this decision can be reached at any time before the third set begins. It’s so nice to have the major COVID impact fading in our rearview mirrors, but it did produce some interesting situations. For example, a group of basketball players from the Dunwoody Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) had to stop playing indoor basketball due to COVID, so they decided to create a new Men’s ALTA tennis team (pictured). Captain Andrew Mintz requested a C2/C3 playing level, but due to their complete lack of tennis playing experience, the team was placed

at C6, where they promptly proceeded to win the City Championship. The players continued to play in the off season, improving their skills, and were bumped up to C3 in Spring 2021. Lo and behold, the team wound up going undefeated (losing only one set all season) to take the City Championship title again! Captain Mintz is hoping for a 3-peat, but who knows how they will do in Fall 2021. The team will move up again, and the big question is will they play basketball again, or have they been permanently converted to tennis players? Registration for the fall Men’s season starts Thursday, July 1, and the roster registration deadline is Thursday, July 22. Captains need to make sure everyone is signed up and ready to play. Players need to be sure to find a team in order to compete. Play begins on Saturday, September 11, and the regular season ends on Saturday, October 3. Playoffs and City Finals run through Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021. Weather is always fantastic in the fall season, and we are looking forward to another great ALTA Men’s League season! SUNDAY WOMEN Sunday 1:00 p.m. Fall Registration, July 1-22 Season runs Sept. 24 - Oct. 12

Sunday Fall Funday

A

s we move from the summer heat into fall, I think we would all agree, it is the most wonderful time of the year. Falling leaves, football, festivals, and tennis. Our planning for fall tennis begins in the summer. You already should have reached out to your players to start putting teams together. As captains begin to register their teams, we want you to check a few things:

SUNDAY WOMEN

• Contact each player, even if you are reinstating a roster, and confirm they want to join the roster. • Make sure you have the minimum number of players. The minimum number of players for Sunday Women is 12. • Prior to submitting the roster, read all instructions. • Select the co-captain and designees to assist in the management of the team. • Two particularly important steps come next: Requested level flight and Request for Review.

46

This is the way to let us know which level you would like to play, and if there are any special circumstances that should be considered by the league VP. In the leveling process, we pay close attention to these things, and although there is no guarantee, it will certainly be reviewed carefully. Please remember, you must identify any member who is or has been listed on a college or high school team roster during the current ALTA year. An NCAA Division 1 tennis team member is only eligible to play at the AA level. All other current college tennis team members must play at the A level or higher. A member with any current ATP or WTA points must play at the AA level. Current high school team members must play at the B level or higher. When your roster is complete, you will get a confirmation with a Roster ID number. Record this number in case you must return to it for any reason.

NETNEWS JULY/AUGUST 2021

Fall registration ends on July 22. In some cases, captains might have missed the closing date or forgot to add a player, but that’s no problem. You have five days to make late roster additions or corrections. You can remove or add players and even change a facility, if necessary. ALTA volunteers then begin their work. What things are considered? Not only last season’s play results, but we look at the rosters and read all of the Request for Reviews. Our team of volunteers continue to make the most competitive levels possible, while considering the importance of keeping the travel time as short as possible. Fall schedules will go online on August 26. Play begins Sept. 12, 2021. Mark your calendars for these important dates. Interested in volunteering as a coordinator for ALTA? We would love to have you! All you need to do is go to the ALTA website and look for the Volunteer tab. Another way to volunteer, and an especially important position, is to be the captain of your team. We hope with our own new Team Management system, it will make the job smoother, quicker and more efficient. We have listened and made some changes to this system. The Dashboard includes upcoming matches, division standings, league and team calendar, and access to roster member information. Members can view active rosters and related information, including the schedule, lineups, and availability for matches. Members also can communicate through the message board or email. Basically, captains and team members can find all they need to know in one spot. The only thing left is for the season to start. Enjoy your friends, make new ones, enjoy the game, play with good sportsmanship, and remember my favorite saying: Win modestly, lose gracefully, and have a kind word for the opposing side.

Fall Is A Favorite Time For Tennis TAMMI COPELLI, JUNIOR LEAGUES VICE PRESIDENT

Photos by Laura Barnard

A

s the summer comes to a close and the beautiful fall weather is about to be upon us, thoughts of tennis always come to mind. It’s always my favorite time to play. Fall registration just began on July 1, so you are just in time to either register an existing junior team or start a new junior team. You may ask, “Can anyone start a new team?” I get this question a lot. The first thing you need to do is be sure your club or neighborhood courts are registered with ALTA. If you are not sure, don’t worry. A quick search on the ALTA website (altatennis.org) will help you answer that question. Just search under Facilities to find your neighborhood or club. If it’s not there, click on Request New Facility where you’ll find a New Facility Request application. Fill out the simple form, and ALTA will take it from there. A member of the ALTA Rules Committee will contact you and plan to meet you at the courts to do a facility inspection. It’s very important to ALTA to have facilities in good working order that are safe for its members. So now that you have a facility, and eight players, you are all set to enter a roster. You must do this by July 30 (roster deadline) to have a team this fall. Fall play will begin September 11.

The ALTA Junior tennis program is one of the BEST bargains in town. For only $15 a year, juniors (7 to 18 years of age) can participate in a spring and a fall league, play competitive tennis with friends, access all the benefits tennis can offer, and set themselves up with a sport they could possibly play for the rest of their lives. The benefits of tennis for your child go way beyond winning or losing a tennis match. Sometimes, the best life lessons start on a tennis court. I was honored to witness that last season while monitoring a City Finals match. Patience, fairness, determination, compassion, and kindness were all on display that day. It was an honor to watch, and it made me that much more determined to encourage as many parents as possible to have their children join ALTA and be part of something extraordinary. So, fall is almost here, and so is another great ALTA fall season. If your children are not playing, please encourage them to do so and find a team for them, or as I stated earlier, you can start a team for them. Please know we are always here to help. As I do each year, I am looking forward to seeing all the juniors and parents embark on a new season of tennis this fall. JULY/AUGUST 2021 NETNEWS

Eli Hirshberg Hirshberg started playing tennis at just 8 years old. He played on junior ALTA teams out of Country Club of the South and Medlock Bridge from ages 10 to 15. Following his training at The Standard Club in Johns Creek, his mom helped him on and off the tennis court by guiding him in the right direction to become a college athlete. “I would advise a younger player to focus a lot on doubles and play at every opportunity because it can really add to your singles game,” says Hirschberg. He says tennis gave him an opportunity to meet friends, as well as the skills that he will need to succeed for the rest of his life. After high school, Hirshberg will be attending Washington and Lee University where he will continue his tennis career. His best memories of the JCL include all of the ladder events. “It was fun to come together and play some tennis in a relaxed environment,” he said.

Nikhil Kulkarni Kulkarni first picked up a racquet at the young age of 5. Recently, he had the opportunity to train at Academia Sanchez-Casal (ASC) with Lifetime Athletic and Fitness in Peachtree Corners. He also played on the JCL in 2020. Kulkarni lives in Greenville, South Carolina and had previously trained there. He played all of his home matches at Lifetime and travelled to the UTA Academy and Riverside Club to compete. He says his family has always supported him throughout his tennis journey. “My friends and other family also have constantly encouraged me throughout high school to follow my passion,” says Kulkarni. He is forever grateful to his coaches for the time and effort they have given to help him achieve his goals. “My coaches at ASC Atlanta worked tirelessly to help me improve,” he said. Kulkarni’s advice for younger players is to never give up on your dreams. He believes it’s vital to focus on improving every day to be successful. He says tennis has given him a great opportunity to exercise and have fun. “The sport has also taught me invaluable life lessons and has given me skills I will utilize the rest of my life,” he said. Kulkarni is taking a gap year, but plans to attend a four-year college and play tennis. He intends to major in either biomedical engineering or pre-med. He says his best memory of the JCL was playing in the Boys/Girls Doubles Round Robin at Riverside Club. “It was a lot of fun meeting and playing with different players,” he recalled.

Freddie Lawrence Starting at the age of 5, Lawrence played tennis out of Peachtree City. He has been on the ALTA Junior Challenge Ladder for five years and trains with Calin Constanceanu at North Atlanta Tennis Academy. He says his father is his biggest influence. “I was inspired to play tennis because of him, and he still helps me improve my game today,” says Lawrence. His advice for younger players is to work as hard as you can. “You never know when you will get a great opportunity, so you have to work hard to be ready for it,” Lawrence advises. Tennis also has helped him maintain a healthy lifestyle. He says training on the court for hours a day makes it easy to stay in shape. Lawrence will attend Alabama A&M to pursue a career in film and television. He held the top spot on the ladder for a period of time and says that is his best memory of the JCL. Oliver gives credit to her coaches, family, and friends who helped her become a better athlete, which she says led to her becoming a better student. “I would tell a younger player to play with a passion,” she says. “If you’re passionate about tennis, you’ll also be a committed and determined tennis player.” Tennis has allowed Oliver the opportunity to travel and to develop a disciplined mentality. She will be attending Spelman College to study political science with a Spanish minor. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue a law degree with a focus on international law. Her best memory of the JCL is meeting everyone at the end-of-the-season celebration and being awarded the JCL sportsmanship award.

Kate Sharabura Sharabura started playing tennis when she was 5, and she has played on the ALTA Junior Challenge Ladder for four years. She trains at UTA Blackburn. Sharabura says her coach, Noel Wadawu, has had a great influence on her, both on and off the tennis court. “He has coached me to become good at tennis, but he has also taught me a good work ethic that translates to the rest of my life,” says Sharabura. She also gives credit to her parents who have helped her off the court to become a better person, and says her friends inspire her to keep playing. “Everyone I mentioned also supports me, as I continue to play. That has been great,” Sharabura said. Her advice for younger players is that “it’s cool to try hard.” She says tennis has added so much to her life. “It has kept me physically healthy and given me a mental escape sometimes from other parts of my life. It also has helped me create a ton of friends for whom I am so grateful,” she says. Sharabura is planning to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology as a biology major and will be playing tennis for the Yellow Jackets. Her best memory of the JCL is the end-of-year banquet in 2019. “A lot of my friends were there, and it was a great event to bond [with them] and see everyone together.”

JUNIOR CHALLENGE LADDER

Matthew Sloan Starting at a young age, Sloan picked up a racquet and later began playing competitively by age 9. Over the years, he has competed in ALTA league matches out of his neighborhood and on the Junior Challenge Ladder. He practices with the ASC program at Lifetime Athletic Club. “I am beyond grateful for all the individuals who have influenced me throughout my junior career,” he says. “My parents and coaches have always supported me and helped me to be the best person and athlete I can be.” Sloan says if he could do it all again, he would really focus on his development and understanding of who he is on and off the tennis court at a younger age. “I encourage the younger players to enjoy the experience and have fun at a young age, but they should also take their training very seriously,” he said. He credits tennis as being the reason he has become a more disciplined and hard-working person and says it has given him the opportunity to meet many people with whom he will stay in touch long after his college life ends. Sloan’s plans for college include earning a degree in finance, and he will be playing tennis for the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies in the fall. His best memory of the JCL is all of the fun events that are put together for the players. “The round robins, banquets, and socials were super fun and always my favorite tennis events throughout the year,” he said.

Jordan Winfrey Winfrey was introduced to tennis at the age of 12 while at a summer camp. Before that, he was really into baseball. Two coaches who helped grow his game were Scott Ross on the courts of Trammell Crow Park in Southwest Atlanta and D.C. Herendeen from Hunter Park in Douglasville and West Georgia Tennis Club in Villa Rica. “Coach Scott taught me to be confident but humble, to work hard (as he puts it ‘grind it out’), and never give up,” Winfrey said. “Coach D.C. is a doubles maestro! He taught me the finesse of tennis, which helped me play smart tennis.” In his tennis journey, Winfrey played ALTA Junior tennis, twice making it to the City Finals in 14U. While playing varsity tennis at Harvester Christian Academy, he won the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association’s State Individual Title as a freshman. He joined the JCL in 2016 and played his first match against Freddie Lawrence, and interestingly enough, he played the last match of his JCL career against Lawrence in the 2020 season. “The JCL has afforded me the opportunity to compete against top players, which has greatly improved my game, and I love to see how the ladder has grown and that it is more diverse with players coming from all over metro Atlanta,” says Winfrey. His advice to younger players is to “focus on competing hard and set goals to improve your game with each match,” he says. “Have fun, keep practicing, and play matches to work on your consistency; the results will show.” Winfrey will attend Kennesaw State University in the fall of 2021 where he plans to major in psychology and hopes to play club tennis. As he closes out his time as a junior tennis player on the JCL, he is looking forward to playing in ALTA as an adult and staying connected to tennis. “I would also like to thank Coach Clifford Malivert, director at Sweetwater Tennis Center in Austell, for his mentorship and helping me love tennis again,” Winfrey said.

GOOD QUESTION

WHEN RACQUETS COLLIDE My partner and I were at the net during a point in our doubles match. As we both moved to retrieve a shot from our opponents, our racquets clashed. As this transpired, I made contact with the ball and hit a winner. Our opponents claimed that we shouldn’t get the point because our racquets clashed. Were they correct? Keri Beck, Thursday Women’s League Vice President Good thing your racquets collided and you didn’t hit each other! According to ITF Rule 24, the point is lost in doubles “if both players touch the ball while returning it.” As long as it is clear that only one racquet hit the ball, your return is legal.

DISCARDING THE BALL

CLAIMING A LET

WRONG RECEIVER

I normally hold two tennis balls in my hand when serving. If my first serve goes in, I just throw the held ball back toward the fence behind me. In a recent doubles match, our opponents said it was hindering play and that I couldn’t do that because it was distracting. Is that true?

During a rally, my partner dropped her racquet, so I took over playing the point and finally hit a winner down the alley. Our opponents refused to give us the point because they said that as soon as my partner dropped her racquet, a let should’ve been called, and we should’ve replayed the point. What is the rule regarding this occurrence?

During a match and after a long rally, I served to the deuce side and lost the point. Before I served for the next point, I realized my opponent was on the wrong side and had received the serve during the previous point. Do we replay the previous point, or does the team automatically lose that point because the wrong person received?

This scenario is specifically addressed in “Friend at Court” in USTA Comment 26.5: “If the receiver asks the server to stop discarding the ball, then the server shall stop. Any continued discarding of the ball constitutes a deliberate hindrance, and the server loses the point.” You may consider having your partner hold the extra ball or use your pocket.

Mitch Falkin, Men’s League Vice President A player’s racquet coming out of the hand (or if their shoe comes off), is not the basis for either player/team claiming a let. According to USTA’s “The Code” (#36), “A let is not authorized for a hindrance caused by something within a player’s control.”

Lamar Scott, First Vice President This one happens more often than you realize, but there is a simple solution. According to ITF Rule 27, during a standard game or tiebreaker in doubles, if there is an error in the order of receiving, this order shall remain altered until the end of the tiebreak or game. The next game that the team receives, they will need to go back to their original receiving order.

DID YOU EVER WONDER ABOUT … ? If you’ve ever had a situation occur in a match where no one on the court knew the rule that applied, send your inquiry to Good Question. ALTA officials answer questions in each issue of Net News and yours could be chosen next. Submit your question, along with your name, league, team name and level to altaeditor@altatennis.org. 52

Live Ball Drills And Mental Toughness

T

ennis is on! Seven million new tennis players picked up a racquet in 2020 in the United States. That is great news for the tennis industry coming out of a pandemic. Now, the question is how does the tennis industry keep those new players engaged in our sport? I recently finished a tour of clubs, public facilities, and high school tennis programs in the Midwest and West. During my trip, I traveled to Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana! It was so much fun, and I took in some great tennis country. What I found was that local tennis leaders spend time ensuring that their new players align with existing players to find matches and social tennis experiences. As the leagues come back into play, these tennis opportunities really fuel the tennis participation at all levels. High school tennis is way up in participation numbers across the country. I 54

NETNEWS JULY/AUGUST 2021

couldn’t believe the number of players on the teams that I worked with. I’ve found that conducting live ball drills right away was beneficial because most of those players are seasonal and need real-world situations to be successful. Live ball is when you are rallying with someone and a dead ball is when someone feeds a ball to you. I start out every live ball session with reflex volleys with both players at the net working on a cooperative and consistent rally. Then both players back up and do the same thing from the ground strokes. I do various situations with moon balls back and forth, combined with slice shots. Any situation a player will see on the court is what I want them to prepare for on the practice court. I’ve had a great deal of success teaching the live ball method. The next time you jump on the court to work on your game, run drills and games based around the live ball; it will serve you well!

Mental Toughness On the pro tour, the big news in June was Naomi Osaka refusing to do press conferences and ultimately leaving the French Open. Naomi is a smart person and player. She is always on the cutting edge of dynamic situations and seems to play even better with noise surrounding her. However, this time she felt that the press can be harsh and extremely critical. Naomi has spoken recently about her own mental health issues, raising awareness to the situation in general. Players with the money to absorb the fine have skipped press conferences in years past, but Naomi raises an issue that we should all take time and look into. I have worked with many young people whose number-one challenge is a lack of mental toughness. That also can be categorized as a mental health situation. The competition is so tough and harsh in pressure tennis. I’ve worked with players who felt their self-esteem was tied to the result of a match. If they won a match, they felt they were a good person, and just the opposite when they lost. As a player, I loved the game, but never felt a loss defined me as a person. To be clear, I don’t question Naomi’s toughness on or off the court. She is shining a light on an important issue. In my years coaching, I have learned to listen first and take detailed notes on players to give important feedback. So many emotions are tied into their results, and it is crucial to be ultra-positive with the feedback to build a greater person who will play better tennis the next time they walk on the court. — LUKE JENSEN FRENCH OPEN DOUBLES CHAMPION

Time Your Split Step And Own The Net BY ANGUS MACLEAN, TENNIS PROFESSIONAL AT THE CARL SANDERS YMCA IN ATLANTA

A

fter 30-plus years of coaching tennis and watching hundreds of league and tournament matches, I have come to the conclusion that the players who anticipate the best at net own the net and win the most. The players who cover the net well compared with the players who do not is pretty simple. The players who cover the net well really understand the concept of timing their split step. The players who do not cover the net well are flat-footed and like a deer in the headlights. So what exactly is a split step? Coaches say it all the time, but sometimes I’m not convinced our students are grasping it. A split step is a little bounce step you take right as your opponent is about to hit the ball. It helps you get a good read on what your opponent is hitting to you. Is it low? Is it to my left, or do I need to move back and hit an overhead? I equate a split step to a shortstop in baseball. A

shortstop always bounces as the batter is about to swing. The shortstop needs to read the ball off the batter’s bat, saying to himself, “Is it to my left, at my body, to my right, or do I need to move back and catch it?” I know everyone has different athletic ability, but everyone can improve their anticipation and quickness at the net, no matter their skill level. I start every team coaching clinic with cooperative reflex volleys. I have all four players start about two feet inside the service line and I have them keep the ball in play without them letting the ball hit the ground. I have them focus on timing their split step and watching the ball come off their opponents’ racquets. Once they have nice, controlled rallies, then I let them hit the ball a little harder. This really trains their eyes and hands. Time your split step, see the ball well, and own the net.

USTA GEORGIA-GPTA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT: ANGUS MACLEAN Hometown (City/ State): San Francisco, California How did you get involved in teaching tennis? I’ve been playing tennis my whole life and fell into it. Diehard fan of what sports team? San Francisco 49ers Best part of your game? My ground strokes. Dream doubles match would be me and… Any one of the Bryan brothers When I’m not teaching tennis, I’m… Walking my dog, Hunter, and doing home projects. My favorite tennis memory is: Winning my first USTA tournament match when I was 13. My favorite professional player is: Rafael Nadal #1 reason why I enjoy teaching & coaching tennis: Knowing that I make people’s day a better day. I like helping people learn how to play tennis in a fun manner. What important tennis message do you want to promote? The great thing about tennis is that it is a very healthy activity, but it is great socially. Humans are social creatures and getting on a league team gives you a bunch of new friends. I encourage everyone I coach to find a team to play on, as most humans like activities where they can participate in a group setting.

Achilles Tendonitis Preventive treatment goes a long way in avoiding injury BY RICHARD C. LEHMAN, M.D., U.S. CENTER FOR SPORTS MEDICINE

A

chilles tendonitis in tennis players is fairly common. This occurs most commonly in middle-aged players, with tight heel cords as a predisposition. Clay courts seem to help the condition, while hard courts seem to make the condition worse. But let’s dial this back for a minute and talk about the Achilles tendon — what it is, where it is, and why tennis players have a predisposition to overload it. The Achilles tendon, which most people know is connected to the calf muscles, the two muscles known as the gastrocnemius and the soleus. These large muscles course downward toward your heel and connect to your calcaneus (heel bone). Because of the large pull of these muscles, there is a great deal of stress on the Achilles tendon. Most of this stress occurs when you serve, when you move forward toward the net, and when you sidestep. Also, when you are running out wide for a ball and are pushing off, the Achilles tendon is loaded with three to four times your body weight, creating significant stress in the Achilles. The Achilles tendon commonly has a decrease in blood supply as we get older. This is a reason that middle-aged tennis players are much more likely to develop overload of the tendon as it relates to the loss of blood supply compared with a younger player. 58

NETNEWS JULY/AUGUST 2021

Don’t get me wrong: We do see Achilles tendon tears in young athletes, but the overload is much more commonly seen in older adults as our blood supply diminishes. So what are the signs of Achilles tendonitis? They are pain and possibly swelling in the back part of your lower leg. It commonly occurs about 7 cm above your calcaneus. There may be a nodule in the back part of your Achilles tendon that makes pushing off quite painful. Additionally, when you sit for long periods of time and initially get up, this can be painful. However, once you start playing and are warmed up, there is increased blood supply to the Achilles and the soreness could resolve. But with an inflamed Achilles, once you are finished playing and are rested — perhaps having a post-match cocktail — and then you go to stand, the pain can be significant. If you are experiencing chronic pain or swelling in your Achilles, consult a physician. Imaging for the Achilles tendon can include an x-ray and an MRI. If there is just a tendinopathy, or inflammation, or degeneration of the Achilles tendon, the treatment includes physical therapy and possibly a biologic. A biologic would be an injection of platelet rich plasma (PRP), with a combination of possibly stem cells. This treatment enhances the healing and

increases the blood flow to the Achilles tendon and may allow improvement in healing of the degenerative area. Other treatments include physical therapy on a manual basis. These are generally called Astym or Graston techniques. These techniques literally increase blood flow by manually breaking down the tendon. Surgery would be a last resort, and that would be to excise the necrotic component of the tendon if there is a partial tear and repair the healthy tendon so normal vascularity and normal tendon continuity is restored. We want to avoid surgery on the Achilles tendon if we possibly can because there is a lengthy rehabilitation process; it takes patients a long time to return to tennis. How do we avoid Achilles tendonitis? First of all, Achilles tendonitis is caused by a number of factors, including the following: • Poor tennis shoes. • Lack of medial arch support. • Tight Achilles tendon, which can be corrected with aggressive stretching and more importantly, aggressive warm up.

It is crucial to warm up, stretch, and increase the blood flow in the calf prior to playing and again after your match. The lesson here would be to stretch, stretch, and stretch. Stretching just prior to playing tennis is not enough. Actually, stretching by itself is not enough. It is important to stretch one or two times a day. It only takes 15 to 20 seconds and it is important to warm up thoroughly — that could be something as simple as riding an exercise bike, gentle stretching, doing a few light squats, anything that increases the blood flow to the Achilles tendon. It is crucial to warm up, stretch, and increase the blood flow in the calf prior to playing and again after your match. Consider doing squats, toe raises, or something as simple as jumping rope for 10 or 15 seconds. Preventive treatment goes a long way in avoiding Achilles tendonitis and avoiding recurrence of Achilles tendonitis. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen and Naprosyn, are helpful. If the Achilles tendon gets sore, you want to do three things: You want to ice; you want to stretch; and you want to heat. And be sure to ice the area once more before going to bed. If your tendonitis persists for more than two weeks, see your doctor. For more information, visit the U.S. Center for Sports Medicine at uscenterforsportsmedicine.com. The office phone number is 314.909.1666. If you have any questions, please call us directly.

NUTRITION

Conquering the Summer Heat Challenges of Recovery Nutrition and Rehydration BY PAGE LOVE, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, USPTA AND BENITA BOBO, DIETETIC INTERN

S

ummer has finally arrived and along with the beautiful sunshine comes the more acute need to stay hydrated after your court time and as you prepare for the next day’s play. Higher heat and humidity translate to more sweating and a greater need to replenish lost electrolytes. Often, recovery nutrition is forgotten in the summer heat. The recommended quick protein recovery after match play is not desirable for many because of a decreased appetite as a side effect of playing in the heat. So what are the new, lighter protein recovery options that may be easier to swallow? Priority goals for rehydration Priority goals include supplying cool liquid to for rehydration replenish lost fluids to the working muscles and to replace elec- include supplying trolytes lost in sweat. So starting cool liquid to with liquids, here are some new replenish lost electrolyte beverages to consider that will help to replenish key fluids to the minerals, especially sodium, working muscles chloride, potassium, and magneand to replace sium: Biolyte, Hoist, Gatorade’s Bolt24, V8 Hydrate, and Body electrolytes lost in Armour. Or you also can choose sweat. to stick with the classics: Gatorade or Powerade, but in extreme humidity or if you are a heavy sweater, you may benefit from higher electrolyte options such as Liquid IV and Pedialyte. Current scientific recommendations from the American College of Sport Medicine are to include sodium (0.5-0.7 gm per 1 liter of water) in the rehydration solution ingested during exercise lasting longer than one hour to enhance palatability and promote fluid retention. During matches, you should drink at least ½ cup to 1 cup in regular intervals, ideally during every changeover. This may require drinking both your sport beverage and water after play — in volumes up to 1 liter per hour — on hotter days to replenish sweat loss volume. Additionally, it is recommended that players continue to rehydrate until their urine color returns to a light, “lemonade” yellow color. After tennis, hydrating should go hand in hand with recovery protein intake, which provides the building blocks to help tired

muscles. But the more protein you consume, the more you need to hydrate. When protein is processed in your body, the byproducts (like nitrogen) are processed by the kidneys and excreted, which translates to the kidneys working harder, so this takes more fluid. Some great protein recovery drinks include Boost, Ensure, Muscle Milk, and newer products like Evolve, Orgain, and Gatorade Super Shake. It is recommended to consume 15-25 grams of protein within the hour after tennis play to enhance muscle regeneration. If protein recovery beverages feel too heavy in the heat, consider chocolate milk instead. If you drink 2 cups (1/2 liter) of cold chocolate milk, you will consume a minimum of 16 grams of protein and meet these recovery needs along with fluid, sodium, and calcium, another forgotten mineral lost in sweat that many other sport beverages do not replenish. And let’s not forget about the temptation to drink alcoholic beverages after play, especially in the heat of summer. A cold beer, an extra glass of wine, or a refreshing cocktail may seem like a good idea, but sip in moderation! Research shows that alcohol does not promote recovery, and in some cases, impedes it. But the newer alterative NA (non-alcoholic) beverages can rehydrate and provide sodium to boot. So when you are craving that ice-cold beer, ask for popular choices such as Budweiser Zero, Heineken 0.0, or Athletic Brewing Company Run Wild Non-Alcoholic IPA. Older adults’ One other issue to consider: bodies are As we age, we actually need less efficient at more water for many reasons. First, there is a decrease in musregulating body cle mass and since muscles hold temperature, which water, this can translate to a increases the risk 20-percent reduction in body water composition. Additional- of heat exhaustion, ly, older adults’ bodies are less heat stroke, and efficient at regulating body temheart problems. perature, which increases the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and heart problems. Lastly, thirst cues decline with age, so drink water even if you’re not thirsty because by the time you feel the thirst, you may already be dehydrated! KEEP THE FOLLOWING RECOVERY HYDRATION TIPS IN MIND THIS SUMMER:

Bring both water and a sport beverage with adequate sodium to the court.

Bring enough of each for after-court rehydration to continue drinking after play to bring your urine color back to normal.

Bring a drinkable protein recovery option such as a moderate protein content recovery shake or chocolate milk.

If you choose alcohol, continue to rehydrate with water and/or consider new non-alcoholic drink options.

Classic Cocktails For many reasons that need no explanation, at-home cocktails are having a moment. Their popularity has been on the rise — from the simple to the complex. Some of us at Net News have joined in the merriment. We just fancy the ritual of it all: the special ice; the exotic ingredients; the colorful creations; and that adrenaline-inducing hunt for those rare bottles. But regardless of your particular leanings when it comes to libations, there are certain drinks that are classics for a reason. So let’s explore a few recipes that can be standard go-tos for yourself and your guests.

Sazerac Cocktail

2 1 ¾ 1 8-10

oz. light rum of your choice oz. simple syrup* oz. lime juice oz. soda water mint leaves

In a pilsner glass, gently muddle the mint leaves in the simple syrup. Add the lime juice and rum, then stir to integrate. Add three cracked ice cubes and three whole ice cubes. Add the soda water and gently agitate with a bar spoon to integrate ingredients. Top the glass with a small mound of crushed ice. Garnish with a plume of mint and a straw (optional). *To make your own simple syrup, combine one part water and one part granulated sugar (1:1). Be sure to heat the water first, before adding the sugar. Heating the sugar and water together won’t ruin the syrup — it just takes longer to heat. It’s not necessary to bring the water to a boil. Once the sugar is dissolved, let the syrup cool. Store it in a glass container in the refrigerator; it will keep for two to three weeks. 62
