The Lighting Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

Cherry Hill High School West has a long tradition of theatrical excellence dating back to the 1980’s. Current director, Carolyn Messias, is a product of this excellence as an alumna of the Class of 1984. When she took over the program in 2007, she vowed to continue the high standard of quality that the Cherry Hill community has come to expect.

Each year, West produces two musicals – one in the fall and one in the spring. Messias tries to balance old favorites with more contemporary selections. In the past, West has performed standards like Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and

Chicago along with Hairspray, In The Heights and We Will Rock You. This spring’s production is The Lighting Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, a musical first produced on Broadway in 2017. West will be one of the first high schools in the areal to mount a production.

The musical is based on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan and follows Percy Jackson on his hero’s journey. As a son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson has newly discovered powers he can’t control, monsters on his trail, and is on a quest to fine Zeus’s lightning bolt to prevent a war between the Greek gods.
