THE COLOR RUN

CHARITABLE COLOR EXPLOSION Cincinnati citizens ran an unusual 5K race Saturday to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
LIFE & ARTS 5 Two Door Cinema Club hit the scene in 2010 with its debut record, “Tourist History,” quickly gaining popularity outside its home country of Scotland. The group began making music without a drummer — preferring the use of a drum machine — for much of its early years. Its latest album, “Beacon,” features a real drummer and shows more maturity. Two Door Cinema Club approaches “Beacon” differently, borrowing from bands like The Strokes and Tokyo Police Club — which is certainly pleasing, but might strike some as generic. Regardless, the band sticks to its dance-rock roots, dominating the record with great guitar hooks.
THE CHARIOT “ONE WING” The Chariot is a post-hardcore band from Georgia with serious bite. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but The Chariot pays great attention to lyrics and unconventional arrangements. The band has such a loyal following because of its wild live performances and counterculture attitude. The Chariot’s previous album “Long Live” raised expectations for “One Wing,” but the band manages them well. The third track, entitled “Your,” is a vocal compilation in church hymn style, while “Speak” features screaming and a dark piano part played in minor key. Lyrically, “Speak” is incredibly powerful and showcases the genius behind The Chariot’s music.
IMAGINE DRAGONS “NIGHT VISIONS” Few bands have gone from zero to hero as quickly as Imagine Dragons. Six months ago, not even a YouTube video featuring the band could be found. Now, Imagine Dragons is all over commercials and has been featured in the television show Glee. Imagine Dragons’ debut full-length, “Night Visions,” develops the artful pop rock sound the Las Vegas natives are known for. The album features a slightly more energetic stadium rock vibe than its predecessors, supplemented with electronics and backing vocals. Imagine Dragons’ influences give the album a grand, vibrant sound — also making great use of its pop-styling with simple chord progressions and seemingly childish stage gimmicks.

THE ROYAL CONCEPT “THE ROYAL CONCEPT EP”
The Royal Concept, a playful mix of dance-focused indie-pop like Phoenix and Walk The Moon blended with groups such as Bombay Bicycle club and Young The Giant, are making its way up the alternative charts and turning heads. Its music is incredibly relatable and really grabs the listeners’ attention. One listen and The Royal Concept will be stuck in your head for days.
THE PAPER ROUTE “THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS”
Paper Route has been around for a while, but hasn’t gotten much publicity. The band played Midpoint Music Festival last week, and occasionally tours with bigger names, but it’s been under the radar for most of its career. “The Peace of Wild Things” could be a breakout record for Paper Route. It is more of a pop record than its previous works, but no less impressive. It does a great job of bringing together influences like OneRepublic and Maroon 5, as well as technical flourishes found in bands such as Coldplay, Band of Horses and Future of Forestry to make a great album.

LIFE & ARTS Plot holes threaten to derail film Woodrow Goldsmith | Contributor
“Looper” isn’t perfect, nor is it logically sound. Traveling through time is tricky, and although it comes close to sticking the landing, “Looper” doesn’t quite make it; however, it’s in good company. Time travel in film never makes complete sense, even in modern classics like “Star Trek: The Voyage Home” (why does Kirk think he can just steal a whale and not drastically change the timeline?) or “Back to the Future,” (why does the timeline change in sections?). In this version of the future, the mob sends its victims 30 years into the past where an assassin — or “looper”— waits for them. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays one of these assassins whose life is complicated when he is tasked with eliminating his future self (Bruce Willis), but accidentally lets him escape. Gordon-Levitt and Willis look nothing alike, so the filmmakers added prosthetics and make-up. The outcome only strengthens the film, and is not nearly as distracting COURTESY OF Alan Markfield/SONY PICTURES as a similar effect in “Prometheus.” The performances also strengthen the film. After TIME TRAVEL NOT POSSIBLE “Looper” leaves holes a couple of so-so turns in “The Dark Knight Rises” and in time travel aspect of film, never making total sense.
“Premium Rush,” Gordon-Levitt nails it as a cold-hearted assassin, while Willis gives a great performance as an older, wiser version of the same character. Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels and Paul Dano excel in smaller, equally powerful roles, but Pierce Gagnon (Blunt’s son) almost ruins the film with his overacting and cute-but-creepy-kid act. There are so many good, young actors, making it always baffling when an annoying child almost wrecks a perfectly good movie. Although the time travel aspect of the film comes close to making sense, writer/director Rian Johnson’s script has some holes. Why does older Joe start to forget his life in portions? Why does no one else seem to be affected by the shifts in the timeline? It’s nitpicky, but when a film with such high production value and intelligent ideas reaches for perfection, it’s hard not to be disappointed when it doesn’t quite get there. Johnson has a knack for creating unique universes — “Brick” and “The Brothers Bloom” are sophisticated — and “Looper” is no exception. The problems with the film aren’t big enough to be distracting, but aren’t quite small enough to be ignored.
‘Dredd’ redefines apocalyptic wasteland
The film presents a totally unique experience for action junkies Jake Scott | Contributor Fans of “Judge Dredd” comics will find delight in the gory, B-movie style gun scenes in “Dredd 3D” — despite a fastpaced, yet limited storyline. Judge Dredd (portrayed by Karl Urban, best known for his role as Éomer in “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”) is a famed and feared judge for Mega-City One, a violent metropolis stretching from Boston, Mass. to Washington, D.C. Dredd partners with Judge Anderson (Olivia Thrilby), an orphaned psychic who failed her tests to become a full judge. Due to her mutant powers, Dredd evaluates her because she might be a major asset to the judges. Judges act as judge, jury and executioner for the masses of what is now known as the Cursed Earth. MegaCity One alone houses 800 million residents, and has 17,000 crimes reported every day. One of these crimes — a triplehomicide — brings the judges to Peach Tree, a large Mega Block housing nearly
100,000 residents. Just think of 200-story section-eight type housing to get an idea of what it looks like. After Anderson senses there is more to the homicides than even Dredd suspects, a routine investigation soon turns into a brutal gauntlet as the judges are forced to fight their way back to the outside world. Director Pete Travis didn’t have much success with his last feature film,“Vantage Point,” but proves himself something of a creative powerhouse with “Dredd 3D.” He takes an increasingly recycled setting, the post-apocalyptic wasteland, and breathes new life into it. The film doesn’t focus on how Earth morphed into the Cursed Earth, instead it shows the viewer the harsh yet necessary justice system that rules within. While the world outside of the city walls might be corrupted, judges refuse to allow their cities to decay. The judges display a no-holdsbarred type of judgment, allowing for an extremely bloody and radical 3-D experience. Plenty of bullets and blood fly when the judges make their journey through
one of the most violent parts of the city. “Dredd 3D” is not just a run-of-themill action movie, and its originality grants a whole new experience for action

junkies; however, with little background, the film’s fast-paced storyline can be extremely confusing to those who have never heard of the comics it is based on.
