House of Anita Dongre: Four brands to bring Fashion to other heights

Make-Up: Amiirah Sheriff Text: Harrsha Lutchman Hair: Anna Dookhun Location: Trianon

“Whether it is fashion or interior decorations, it just comes. I think it is inborn. Rookminee Hamza, Operation Manager at the famous House of Anita Dongre, at Trianon Shopping Park, is simplicity embodied. All smile, she is the type to put her work first and prefers to talk about the franchise she works for, rather than put herself on the front row. But we were able to get a glimpse of her person. Rookminee, from Indian origin, has a strong international experience in fashion and retail. She is passionate about the fashion industry. She believes that having style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.

15

Rookminee Hamza found herself at the House of Anita Dongre where she is currently the Operation Manager. “Right now! [Laughs] Yeah, let’s say this.” She runs all the operations, from ordering the clothes to the accessories. She works closely with India as far as the visual merchandising is concerned. She looks after the training, the product knowledge, the display, almost everything… “I have a team of six wonderful people”, says Rookminee. The four babies of Anita Dongre The House of Anita Dongre – the only store being at Trianon Shopping Park – owns and operates four brands with distinct identity. Global Desi which is the boho-chic side of the business, inspired by India’s colours and chaos, and created in smooth western styles. AND is a line of chic contemporary western wear for women and whose brand ambassador is none other than famous Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan. There is the Anita Dongre, the “pret collection”. And the latest brand brought in this year – Grassroot. For Anita Dongre, Grassroot was founded to ensure the long tradition of craftsmanship was sustained. A brand born to revive, sustain and empower India’s crafts and artisans. “For the recent shoot, we have used two pieces of Grassroot, and the rest is from Anita Dongre Pret Collection. Where Grassroot is concerned, it is fully hand-made. Even the material has been hand-woven. It is a different concept and it is made out of organic products. It is vegan, so nothing to do with animals. The purpose behind it is for woman empowerment. The people working on Grassroot are actually the women of the villages of Rajasthan. They sit and weave the material by hand. We decided to bring it here and see how it works for the Mauritian clientele”, explains Rookminee. And, she adds, it takes one month to make one piece of Grassroot collection.

16

According to her, what is unique about Anita Dongre is the material she uses. Cotton and silk, which suit the weather of Mauritius, and each piece is unique. Easy to wear, light, stand-out pieces… In line with the seasons. Each year, Anita Dongre (the famous Indian designer) and her team focus on two seasons: summer-spring and autumn-winter. “They have already worked out the collection for the next season. We get a preview and we get to say what we want in our country. We leave it to the designers to come up with the styles, and as from there we see what’s going to work for the Mauritian clientele.” Behind every season there is a storyline, and right now it’s the Tree of Love, inspired by the Bishnoi community who will go to any length to protect what is sacred to them. It pays homage to the Bishnoi community’s spiritual reverse for nature using intricate weaves and embroideries that celebrate fine Indian craftsmanship and a way of life… And the fashion right now? The Sharara style, as well as the palazzos and crop tops. “In the shooting we have used mainly the Shararas. It is not the typical Indian kind of thing. It’s with a little top, a little jacket or a blouse you can tuck in. It is a mix of Indo-western I would say. A lot of long jackets and you can wear classic trousers underneath.” Hamza’s love for Fashion Working for the franchise, the House of Anita Dongre, gives much happiness to Rookminee who finally is able to embrace her love for fashion, arms wide open. A happiness which translates her plans for the franchise in Mauritius. “I would like to expand the business and have more than one store in Mauritius. I see a future for Grassroots collection in the resorts; so we will see how it goes.” Ending its fourth year in Mauritius, the franchise relies on its regular and loyal clientele. “We have our own clientele. Those who come to us do so because they love the fashion, the fabric. The garments are very high-end. It is up to us to sustain it and give our customers what they need. Hopefully we will be here forever!” concludes Rookminee Hamza.

She has no choice than to accept her illness and live with it. Stéphanie, 31, is suffering from an inflammatory disease that affects deeply her immune system. She has had so many transformations since 2016 and is still restricting herself and doing concessions in so many things, but she never misses an occasion to live fully the moments life offers her. Let’s discover this strong little lady. Her present She is an artist, known singer, former Director of the television program Viens Découvrir and ‘Arabesque’ casted on the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and actual anchor of the weekly program, ‘Faya Vibes’ at the MBC. The singer is currently working on an upcoming album ‘Reflexion’ with ‘Guru et la Tribu’ to be released in 2018, a group who inspires its music from freedom, and beats from African, Mauritian and Oriental rhythms and culture. The illness and effects The inflammatory disease just outbroke in mid-2016. She is still under treatment. Till then, her lifestyle and visions completely changed. She had to impose herself many restrictions, to start with, the food lover had to change her diet, hanging outs and all physical activities. “I have lost so much hair, I have lost so much weight and I get so much muscular pains every day. I have learnt to live with it. I remain on medications, but I can say that I feel dependent” a hard life for someone who was dynamic and physically very active in exercises and hiking, which she now does only once a month when she is fine. As says Stephanie: “I have to go with the flow. I have the full support of my mother, Armelle, and I have faith in a better future, health wise. Thus I take this change as positively possible”.

She reveals having stopped living a Cape Diem life and chose to better look after herself, her plans and her peace of mind by doing Yoga sessions at home itself, “it helps me review my priorities and charge my batteries and find energy for my everyday fight. I am able to see retrospectively, people and situations, be more attentive and patient, inspired by Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Frida Kahlo, I have a more philosophic approach on, life, people and situations. I live with what I have, and I live everything fully. I enjoy taking myself as a Warrior of Light, just as other people in my situation do. What I can share with them is that positive vibes and faith that sooner or later things will be better, never be negative and not define all their life around their illness” she says. Dreams and passions Diminished but yet very passionate. “Singing, Art, Work and live life to the fullest. These are my dearest passions” she attests. She has in mind to produce her own album, where she wants to relate her past and present life. The artist in her, inspired by Mandala Art will definitely produce an abstract painting. A travel lover, she has discovered for now Switzerland, Spain, Australia and Reunion Islands. Her dream is to discover Brazil, “for its culture, cuisine, music, people and their warm welcome and also its beaches” she reveals. Well, all this to say, that the 1m60 little strong lady is not letting herself go down in this illness and the side effects and is making it the most possible to live her present fully and preparing her future, giving herself the right to dream and accomplish those dreams.” Life is short, better live each and every moment fully without any regrets” she concludes.

An On Wheels STORY An ever growing love… Eric started when he was 12 and is, at 26, still perfectioning himself. From a fearful and shy skate boarding amateur, he became a fearless Pro Skateboarder who has participated in numerous national and international competitions. Zoom on his ‘on wheels’ story

Model: Eric Kircher Photography: Sachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah

Every excuse was a good excuse to skateboarding He is a dynamic young guy who never misses his three times per week skate training, and that since the past 14 years. That love for skateboarding came to him when he was at the Lycée de Labourdonnais School. He was fascinated by the skateboarders in his school. He managed to get himself a standard board, hopped onto it and that’s it, he kept on skating. “Breaks, free periods, after school, during all the weekends, I always had an excuse to go skating” he says. He amplified this love by buying skateboarding magazines and watched over and over again the tutorial CDs where he learned new tips. Internet videos on skateboarding tips helped him a lot. Eric did not want to keep skateboarding just as a hobby, he wanted to become a Pro Skateboarder. He started by participating in small competitions, when he was at the Lycée des Mascareignes and tried to gain 58

in fame and get the attention of would be sponsors, “The board and accessories were very expensive and neither me nor my family could afford such an investment. My family didn’t believe in dream of becoming a Pro Skate Boarder. Getting a sponsor was the best way to practice Skate Board at a level higher than amateur”, he says. Total freak out He participated in his first ever competition, the “2005 Sprite, Slide in Da Mix Tour”… At least he was registered to participate. But as he tells us without any shame “I was scared when I saw my adversaries practicing before the competition. They were frightening, I knew I wouldn’t stand a chance, I stepped down and forfeit. I then knew that my biggest problem is the lack of confidence in myself. I, from then, started working on that” he reveals. He then tried hard to participate in all small skating competitions

Competitions 2010, he won the 2nd place at the Mauritius Skate Championship- Junior Category. He has been approached by the brand Urban Star, his first ever sponsor. In 2010 he also participated in various ‘Mountain Dew” skate competitions and won several prizes. 2012, he flies to Reunion Island for more intensive practices at proper pro skate parks. The life changer for him was in 2014. He got a sponsorship from the brand Red Bull brand, a two years contract with the American Brand DC Shoes and got the chance to meet and befriend Melody Tusson, the proprietor of the former Skate Park at Bagatelle. “She opened me doors to the Kimberley Diamond Cup world championship of skateboarding. I was propelled to the Pro Category and had the chance to practice and compete the world most influential Skateboarders. We even partied together. I finished at the 23rd place but still it was and will be the most amazing and exciting experience in my life. Back in Mauritius, it opened me new doors like in Modelling and Media” he reveals. No more National Skateboarding Competitions! Even if Skateboarding Competitions have lost importance in Mauritius, Eric continues to practice. “I have given another dimension to my skateboarding practice, an intensive sport dimension” he reveals. He is currently the Sports and Events Specialist for Red Bull brand and is over booked. But still he finds a way to ‘train intensively’ three times per week. He is also responsible of the yearly Red Bull Skateboarding Competition. “If there are National or international Skateboarding Competition, I will, for sure participate” he concludes.

The Freelance Artist She is an accomplished French Model and a Professional Make-up Artist who dreams to work on big Fashion Shows and Cinema sets. She is currently following a course in Drama since she also nourishes the dream of becoming a comedian. At 20 years old Elsa is doing everything possible to achieve her goals. Model: Elsa Boutelier Makeup: Ashish Rughoobur Photography: Sachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah Location: Long Beach Hotel

The exigent Model The Parisian Model started her journey at 16. She has posed for over 30 photographers and is now a professional in Lingerie, Nude Art and Fashion in general. Being a tattoo lover, she sells herself as an ‘Inked Girl’ Freelance Model. She has three big tattoos on her legs and a fourth one, an abstract and mystic wolf just in the middle of her breasts. Over the years she has participated in numerous competitions and Fashion Tours in Paris and surroundings. She is looking forward to get a long term contract with a well reputed Agency that will accept her as a normal Model and an ‘Inked Girl’ Model. “I should say that it is rather tough to find an agency where I can get everything I want. The search is on…” she says.

comes to pose for photographers. For me, Modelling is a form of Art. I pose after doing loads of research on the set concepts and I rather like when the photographer has his own artistic universe where I can enter and get inspired. It is not at all gratifying for me to pose just to pose. I have encountered a certain number of amateurs and I didn’t get a very good experience. They don’t know in which direction they are going and it is frustrating working with them” she reveals. In the coming years she hopes posing for the greatest artistic photographers and get to work for a known agency to become an international Model. She can be followed on her Instagram page: Cleminked. model.paris

Elsa does not accept the offer of all photographers who approaches her. “I have quite some exigencies when it

An Artist in Make-up Since always, she had a certain taste for make-up. She started on doing her ‘experiences’ on herself and still does. In fact, on almost every setting where she works as a Model, she manages to do own make- up. In 2016 she enrolled the Flavia Palmeira Make-up Institute. She learnt different techniques in Hair Styling and more importantly Make-up, from basic to the most complex like ‘Epoch’ make-up of different eras, collage, face chart, special effects etc. She passed with flying colours and now she positions herself as a Professional Make-up Artist working in freelance. Her Dream is to become a well-known Make Up artist and Hair Stylist working for Festivals, events and Cinema. “I enjoy competing with others and perform my art in the most complex way and on the most complex themes. There is no better place for me to evolve than in Events and Cinema. I am driven by the passion of creating and artistic make-up” she says. “Make-up and hairstyling are my future, since modelling is just for a small period!” she attests. She can be followed on her Instagram page: @elsab.mua. paris Would be Comedian? At least she hopes. She is actually in training at the Cours Cochet in Paris, where she is learning to become a drama artist in her three speaking languages, French, English and Spanish. “I am learning hard these days and trying all sorts of techniques and characters in order to be polyvalent in all roles that will be given to me to play. At the end of this course I will be evaluated and I will know if I am made for this field or not. I really hope to succeed, working in movies is one of my biggest dream” she concludes. Let’s wish her luck… She was in Mauritius recently and accepted to pose for our Newstyle Magazine.
