Ethnic Vibes by Cédric Lanappe

Make-Up: Cedric Lanappe Make-Up assistant: Ashish Rughoobur Models: Gold Models Hair: Katty Depaul Outfits designer: Adeline Thuposy Outfits shop: Label Ritu Kumar & Lappret Midi Photography: Saachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah

A Première for the Make-up Guru A collection made in line with the theme of the Henessy Park Hotel ‘Ethnic Vibes’. Several Djs from different ethnic groups were called from Reunion Island for a special night. Cédric Lanappe worked basing on their type of music and worked, for the first time, on an extremely colourful tone.

In line with the Theme and Music This is a Première for Cédric, even if he is known to the most extravagant Mauritian Make- Up Artist. “ I went on a very flashy and pastel palette for I wanted to stick not only on the Theme but also the music which was going to be mixed live during the passage of the girls” says Cedric. This time, he didn’t have a hard time finding the finest models since he worked with the Gold Models Agency but still he chose one of his favourites, Delphine Dholah as Show Stopper. “In fact I had a big preference for Caucasian and Black skinned models because they are the best to represent the pastel palette. The colours come out better and so do the outlines with dazzling white” reveals the artist.

Developed in No Time Cedric remains the Concept creator he is known for. “This time I only got a theme and in no time, almost instantly, I knew what I needed to do it and how I would do it and on whom. More importantly with who as team members” he reveals. In his squad this time there was Ashish Rughoobur as Make_up assistant, Katty Depaul as Hair Stylist, , Adeline Thuposy as Outfits Designer, The Ritu Kumar & Lappret Midi Outfits Shop and Models from the Gold Models Agency and Ika De la Croix for Fashion Styling who revisited all the outfits so as to better show the ‘Ethic Vibes’ in each and every Model and Outfit. Surprise, Surprise The Make-Up Guru is preparing his last 2017 Show, scheduled for December. He doesn’t say much on it and not even reveal the Theme “It will be a big surprise for the eyes of my public. I am in a full process of refining of the concept, I want it to be big and surprising as a 2017 closing Show” he says, let’s wait for it. For the news, he has just signed as Official Senior Artist for Cosmetic brand MAC ( Make-up Art Cosmetics). Cédric promises big upcoming events sponsored by MAC Label… Stay tuned!

Determine your objectives and goals Model: Samuel Desjardins Photography: Saachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah

Own Transformation “Society gives us an ideal that we need to follow as a boy or as a man. When seeing those idols of mine, very athletic with Greek God like physique, I said to myself, this is how I want to become” attests Samuel. In fact, he comes from a family who are sports lovers and professionals and since he is a child, his family has pushed him in different sport activities. “Athletics, Basketball, Rugby, Rackets sports, but my favourite was Football. Like most kids and teenagers I could play Football for hours even forgetting to eat, it was a real passion. While years were passing by, and me growing up, I noticed I was very skinny, especially as a young man” he reveals. Samuel lacked confidence in himself, his appearance did not please him and he feared the judgments of others. He thus started going to gym at the age of 16 and started learning about exercises and work out to do to develop his body. “I did get some results and it motivated me to go further and further…” says Samuel A growing interest He took great taste in working out and wanted, at all cost, never stop and “be able to help people change their lifestyle and body, just like I did” he says. He then went to study Sport and Exercise Science to be a Personal Trainer. He has a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science as well as Certificate in Health and Fitness Management with HFPA-Health and Fitness Professional Academy from South Africa. “I learnt about nutrition, which is key to feed your body, give you energy to develop and transform. The more I learn the more I realise how ignorant I was and how much more I can learn, through experience and maturity. I want to share my love and passion with others, and help them achieve their goals and objectives” he reveals. 51

The Freelance Personal Trainer Shortly after he came back, he took a job at the Riverland Gym at Grand Bay. He stayed there for three years but then gained more confidence to become an entrepreneur in his field, that is, a private Freelance Fitness Professional. In his work, he demands each of his client to think and define their objectives and goals, to design them and then to be disciplined and consistent. “For sure there will be obstacles and it is okay to get lost, but one needs to get back to his plan as soon as possible and be patient. The results will speak for themselves. I do my best to keep them motivated no matter what happens and make them remember why they doing this and never to give up” he reveals. Being a Personal Trainer, he found that a good balance in activities was important. “Gym is one thing but lots of people love sports and challenge themselves with objectives. The work out in the gym will help improve their performance with an adapted workout, a mix of Weight Training, body weight training and Cardiovascular training (Training the Heart) which is also of great importance” counsels Samuel. Talking about Flexibility, this a milestone he never lets his clients miss. “It helps to prevent injuries as well as having a better quality of life and less aches with the ageing process we all go through. With simple Stretching or Pilates as well as Yoga one can easily improve his flexibility. Keeping that in mind, the truth is that all is important and there is a synergy to be done so that all work together for the best results. And for that, the most important is the foundation, that is, NUTRITION” he stresses on. Adapted food for adapted needs, here are some of his tips. Tips: Good food depending on your needs. This tool is the key to weigh control. If you master all these elements and components you will unlock any objectives and goals you have, with discipline, consistency and work ethic. To lose weight you need to make sure you are in a caloric deficit. In other words, you need to eat less calories than you burn during the day. Make sure you have the right amount of protein, carbs and fat in your daily intake to make sure you lose body fat and not muscle. To be sure it’s best to consult a nutritionist. The Wellness Pillar Working at the hotel gives her the opportunity to keep herself that fit, as, Longbeach Mauritius has as one of its 4 Pillars Wellness together with Culinary, Music and Art. To start with Jennifer hates junkies “I love food but fortunately I simply don’t like eating junk food and fatty food. I don’t have any special diet either, just a well-balanced one. I do not take too much alcohol neither but I enjoy a glass of red wine while eating” she says. Apart from a balanced diet, Jennifer does long hours of fitness at the hotel. “I participate in various activities. To start with, I do Qi Gong discipline which is close to Tai Chi. I attend all my Body toning/ muscle building session in water with Cecile Jeanson ex French champion swimmer attached to the hotel and with a group of colleagues we sometimes do afternoon speed walk and stretching on the beach” reveals Jennifer.

61

62

Positivity Her motto in life, ‘Work hard, Play Hard. She never misses to offer herself her women quality time with her besties during their ladies night out. What drives her to be like she is, is also her belief. “I believe that we need to take care of our body, mind and soul. My strength come from my belief in God, when we are strong mentally and positive, everything else follows” concludes Jennifer. She is not the like to complain about age and effects of age. She just maintains a good balance in everything she does. For her, as long as one takes good care of himself, age is just a number… on paper.

Galina’s and Grace’s Holidays Novels Make-Up: Zehreen Sumtally Russooly Model: Galina Stoyanova, Grace Zhang Photography: Saachin Sagar Text: Javed Sobah Location: Otentic Eco Tent Experience

Amazement and surprise all the way They are two sister-like friends who have discovered the paradisiac facet of our Island. They attest Mark Twain’s saying “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius”, one of the main reasons why the Russian admirer of our island, Galina Stoyanova ,came back a second time bringing Grace Zhang along with her.

Galina Stoyanova has discovered our Island during her professional traineeship in the hotel industry 4 years ago. Degree holder in Tourism Management, she then worked for an American cruise line, before going back to Russia. She is now working in Moscow and from time to time travelling around the world for vacation and seeking new experience. As for Grace, she utterly is a travelling passionate one. She has made her passion her job and works on a Cruise ship. Paradise for a special meeting Mauritius Island is a synonym of Garden of Eden for those two best friend. Coming here was a choice of Galina. She wanted a special meeting place to meet, for the first time, a friend with whom she has a long distance friendship relation. “The idea of coming for vacation to Mauritius came long ago, when my best friend Grace Zhang from China wanted to meet me after 4 years. So we decided to make this trip special and celebrate our long term friendship in a worthy place with the best memories. Since I have been to Mauritius before and knew it would be the perfect destination, we decided to go there. Our time there was special indeed” says Galina.

Amazed Grace She thought that Mauritius was resumed to Sea Sand and Sun. “I was thinking there is only beach to see in this beautiful island” she attests. But 9 days 8 nights in this island changed totally her perception. “Coming to know about the trips that can be done and other activities, I scheduled a full list that could possibly be done during my stay. I think my favorite food is fried Calamari and fresh Sea food. I enjoyed the Walking with lions in Jungle activity and the discovery of African animals “she says. Talking about activities she also enjoyed her trip to Iles aux Cerfs, “I was happy to be offered free Kayak and free ferry to the island & also I still remember and will keep the souvenir of the blue sky and peaceful and harmoniously colored seawater of Mauritius” she relates. She also talks about the opportunity to have photo shooting in my camping hotel, “which is very special hotel for me”, she says. All along this experience Grace and Galina, especially Grace was so amazed of the richness of Mauritius’s beautifulness, hospitality and culture. Rediscovery of Eden Grace and Galina did all their activities together but still, the way they lived them was different. As mentioned above, Galina was at her second visit and describes her rediscovery and experience passionately. “Being Welcomed by the King of the Indian Ocean, when you head for Mauritius and look into the airplane window, the first thing you see is a tiny green island surrounded by emerald water and this actually reminds you a gemstone...accidentally or by the grace of God...dropped into the vast lacy waters of the Indian Ocean. When you see it for the first time, you can’t even imagine that there can be a dynamic life and can’t believe it will have all necessary to be called a “paradise” and make you feel the same gemstone that has abandoned the civilization for the sake of pure simple joys of life......Joys that make your experience authentic” she says. Galina experiences another facet of Mauritius. 4 years back she lived and worked here, but this time she was a real adventurer.

Sisters for Eco-tourism “We are so different, but so close. Like Russia and China, or like Réunion and Mauritius, or like coffee and tea. She is coffee - strong, bitter and bracing, I’m tea - soft, soothing and good to go with philosophic talks. We are like sisters and we chose Deux Frères literally for us Two Brothers as our destination in Mauritius for this vacation. We checked in an Eco-hotel, so different and so unique at the very first sight. Our vacation really promised to be special” she reveals. Both wanted to do eco-tourism and Eco Tent Experience was the best place. “Adventurers like us who love being closer to nature found it very fascinating. No luxury, sandy beaches and crowds of guests around. However, you get golden days without internet, nice cosy facilities near a beautiful river, which you can explore by kayaking and you can even reach the waterfall. Apart from that there is a library with a hammock on the bank of the river, bikes with a map which you can borrow to discover the area by yourself, a big safari tent for 5 people with no lock and with all elements inside made of recycled wood and a so-called “honest” bar where you can serve yourself with drinks and put down their number in a special notebook”, says an inspired Galina. “Eat, pray, love” Total relaxation. Total authenticity. Food is also a special paragraph in their vacation. “Due to the ethnic, national and cultural blend of citizens on the island, that have 87

arrived here from different continents and corners of the world throughout the centuries, we enjoyed the variety of food here and although it may seem spicy because of chilly, curry and other sauces, whether in seafood, rice, Indian specialties or French culinary delights. Mauritius is a true place where you can learn to “eat, pray, love”, like in a famous book by Elizabeth Gilbert. But in order to discover the art of pleasure, the art of devotion and balance between the two, you don’t have to set off for a new country every time, you can easily learn all that in one. Like any rare special dish, Mauritius should be “tasted” thoroughly, with pleasure and can be highly appreciated only by connoisseurs” she reveals. Not only for beaches Galina says with experience that Mauritius is not only about its beaches. “This land can offer you numerous water activities and sports, like yachting, kitesurfing, paragliding, golf, tennis, scuba diving, deep fishing, hunting, windsurfing and horseback riding. Here each of you can find something up to your taste. Apart from that you will be struck by authentic nature of the island, which is presented by fabulous forms of mountains, rare plant, wildlife and underwater world, as well as by the giant volcano, different color sand, rocks with the long-time history, sacred Lake Grand Bassin and amazing waterfalls, canyons and other mysteries of the paradise. You can’t believe there are so many places to see on such a tiny island that was viewed as a green dot from an airplane just several hours ago” says the amazed one. She continues: “When you travel across the island, you see numerous landscapes with mountains, sugarcane fields, pineapple plantations, fields with rice, chili pepper and other agricultural patches of land. Mauritius has independence and freedom today, giving this freedom to every and each tourist coming here and being eager to forget for a while about endless chase of the busy world, indulge in his/her own thoughts and dive into the atmosphere of the pure nature”. Real Escapism “The best escape doesn’t consist just in staying at the hotel and lying on the beach. The real experience is made of learning the country from inside, tasting its local cuisine, getting to know its people and falling in love with its traditional music, like Sega which is the best at revealing the authentic spirit of Mauritius. Days fly during vacation and when finally it’s time to leave the paradise, you realize that you will definitely miss this land with its cheerful and friendly people the very second you take your seat on an airplane. This is a place that will keep your warmest memories for years reminding a kind of a lighthouse....that will guide your way, guard your stories and endlessly wait for you to come back…” concludes Galina with the promise of coming back for another authentic experience.
