Namrata
Gaya-Teeluckdharry Beauty with brains Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry is a perfect example of beauty with brains. She is not only charming and fashionable but she is also an Attorney-at-Law at the Supreme Court of Maurice. The young lady has a huge fan following on the social media. Since her early childhood, Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry has always been drawn to the legal/courtroom drama. “I was fascinated by stories revolving around crimes and legal system. The whole court process with star-like barristers used to make me dream. When I was around 8 or 9 years old, I was trying to persuade my late maternal grand-father, whom I was so much fond of, to raise his right hand and to swear to tell the truth” she remembers. She took oath as Attorney-at-Law at the Supremer Court of Mauritius since January 2009. Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry is also a member of the National Human Rights Commission. Her role consists mainly in visiting prisons and detention centres to ensure that detainees’ rights are not flouted and that they are not subjected to torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, “The conditions in which the detainees’s live, should be compliant with the criteria laid down by the United Nations conventions and international protocols ratified by Mauritius”. The Attorney-at-Law has been a juror in Miss Eco Mauritius organised by Jerry Nayna and Manav Heerooa, and in Mrs Mauritius World organised by Lady Joyce Bacha and Prakash Ramdhun. “It has been quite an exciting experience but I definitely prefer being in the Jury than in the forefront like the courageous participants! I guess the organisers invited me to form part of their thrilling beauty pageants, as my husband, Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, is a renowned barrister and Member of Parliament (Deputy Speaker). They also noticed that I have a huge fan following on social media as I have a keen interest in fashion and beauty” she says. For Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry, it is of utmost importance to have balanced diets and use adequate beauty products. “I will never go out with messy hair or oily skin. I always carefully choose my dresses with matching accessories” she says. She adds that appearance is important in all fields, “It gives an insight of the kind of person you are or might be in the first place. Don’t we say that first impression is always the last impression?”.

“I was compared to Amal Clooney” Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry
“As an Attorney, you will never get a second opportunity to make first impression, be it with fellow colleagues, the public, the clients or even the Magistrates or Judges. Law practitioners have to comply with a specific dress code, that is formal. Sometimes, I wear fancy heels, pearls and brooches to brighten up those dark attires we are expected to wear. I was once pleasantly surprised when I was compared to the beatiful, elegant, famous and intelligent, Amal Clooney” she confides. Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry prefers the smart casual look. She is often seen wearing knee-length and sleeveless flower print dresses mostly in pink or yellow hues. She thinks that flower prints are a reflection of her personality and inner self, “Flowery dresses make me look way prettier. They add spark and shine to my skin, hair and aura. If I could, I would have worn flowers everyday!”. “But, I am fascinated by the trad itional outfits like sarees especially when I think of our First Lady, Kobita Jugnauth. She is naturally gorgeous when she is draped in her beautiful and classy sarees” she highlights. For Namrata Gaya-Teeluckdharry, beauty is a gorgeous soul coupled to a witty mind in a healthy body. All these attributes must then be wrapped up with humbleness. “Some people are born beautiful. Some grow beautiful with time. I sincerely think that same requires a dose of intelligence, knowing and understanding oneself so as to put forward or bring out one’s best traits. These can be uplifted with make-up, hair styling and dressing up. With intelligence comes maturity and the latter contributes to make one look beautiful as well” she says. She adds that intelligence does not only refer to good grades and academic performance. It is also linked to emotional intelligence. “It is the ability of a person to understand situations and feelings better than others and to respond to them in a sensitive, tactful or compassionate manner. Maybe the fact that my father is a psychiatrist, makes me feel naturally drawn to such persons. They make me feel secure and comfortable” she explains.

My dream was to create a different vision of beauty salon in Mauritius, where every client that visits Glam, feel valued by giving them a tailor-made service, from latest hair coloring services, to the finest haircuts techniques. • How difficult was it to launch your own business?
• What are your upcoming projects?
It was very difficult and risky, not only being a young entrepreneur, after a market research of the sector here; I have noticed that there was a demand for what I was aiming for, that is a personalised service in a non-commercial environment. I want to raise the bar higher than ever as hairstyling and especially hair colouring are still old school here. Thus I had to invest in a beauty salon that emphasizes my philosophy of the beauty world/ hairstyling. I took it as a long term investment, what keeps me motivated is that results are here earlier than expected.
I am very selective with my collaboration with other professionals in the beauty industry in Mauritius. I am currently doing collaboration with Schwarzkopf Professional with different photo shoots and hair transformation videos. Also I am currently preparing an “haute coiffure” fashion show.
• Before Glam By Nush, where were you working? I started working in a beauty salon named ‘ Urban retreat.’ which is one of the most posh beauty salon located in the centre of London. After my studies in USA i worked as a hairstylist/colourist named Salon 230, in Daytona, florida which is the number 1 salon in Miami. I was also ambassador of one of the world’s most famous haircolor REDKEN and also brand ambassador in Daytona for make up brand Anastasia Beverly Hills. Coming back to Mauritius I worked for a year in square beaute . • Where and when did you learn hairstyling? (from school till Glam By Nush) After completing my highschool studies in London, I immediately started my studies in The London School of Beauty and Make up, where I completed my diploma in Beauty Therapist. After that I went to Florida, USA in the INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY doing the COSMETOLOGY diploma course for 2 years. • Why did you choose to be a hairstylist? When you are born to do something, the entire universe conspires to help you make yours dream a reality. Hair artistry is in my DNA • What do your clients look for/demand? Latest hair trends in hair styling and coloring, namely the balayage and the hair painting technique, which became my upmost speciality at the salon. Also clients come to me for hair treatments; I use my expertise as cosmetologist on consultation basis to answer their demands.
• Had you had the chance to work with celebrities, local or international? If yes, who and when? How did it felt? Yes, in florida I had lots of amazing opportunities working with famous models, as I also work in the events business with my husband where we host high profile worldwide popstars like Major Lazer , Maitre Gims , Kalash and many more. How difficult is it to earn a living as an entrepreneur? For a young lady, quite hard! in this business you have a lot of costs, every month is a challenge and you constantly need to strive to reach your goals. • You are married. How do you juggle between your married and professional life? I must say I am very lucky to have found the perfect person to match my busy life! My husband and I share the same goals in life, and we both work a lot together, which means we manage to spend a lot of time together. • What are your hobbies? My hobbies are the simplest things in life, i love nature so I love visiting exciting places to connect with our mother nature, beaches.. forest.. mountains. I also love keeping fit, long runs on the beach is my fav! Also having fun, going to concerts, music events and dance all night long! • Where is Glam by Nush located? Opening hours? Right in the financial centre of Port Louis, Royal road unicorn house building (opposite bank one) 1st floor. Opening hours are 9:30 am till 6pm.

Asma Saleh Mohamed Harrad Ayroles Model at 36! “There is no shame in ageing” says Asma Harrad - Ayroles. The model celebrated her 36th birthday on the 4th of July, “I am rather proud of what I have achieved till now. It is difficult to evolve in this demanding field as ageing women are used to being pushed aside in the fashion industry”. For Asma, beauty is someone who is joyful, charismatic, elegant and most importantly is comfortable in his own skin. Asma is happily married to a painter and sculptor since the last 16 years, “My husband is always supportive. He does his best to make things look easy and he is happy to see me empowered”. The couple has two sons : Rehad and Yasha who are 9 and 12 years old respectively. The boys are also models for an agency in Paris, France and La Réunion. They had the opportunity to participate in campaigns for Disney, La Redoute, Absorba, Pardon and Noorgate to name a few. It has been two years since Asma settled in Saint-Denis, La Réunion, “The place makes me feel good and happy”. But she was born in Diego-Suarez in Madagascar to an indian-malagasy mother and yemeni father, “I grew up in a multicultural environment. It has been enriching. I have learnt to love and be tolerant of others”. She still remembers the first time she posed for a photographer. It was in her native city. “He said I was beautiful and he would like to click my pictures. I was surprised and then I found myself enjoying the photo shoot. Later, I was offered
50
the chance to be the face of a few brands. At 20, I started to participate in fashion shows inspite of my height” she relates. Besides modelling, Asma has a few experiences in insurance and events fields. She is also an art agent to her husband. “I am curious and I like to explore. I adapt easily to changes” she says. Asma has a good fashion sense. She never hesitates to experiment looks and wear designers’ creations, “I take pleasure in posing and doing fashion shows in clothes that I would maybe never dare to wear”. The model does not stick to one particular style. However, she feels more comfortable and free when wearing shorts and sneakers. She stays in shape just by walking even if earlier she used to play tennis and run. She does not stick to a diet. She eats what she likes. “Doing what makes us happy and empowered, give us strength to juggle between our different responsibilities. Being married with kids does not stop a woman from being glamorous and sexy. Catwalking and posing do not objectify a woman. People tend to mix issues. I love what I do. Dare to feel free and make your dreams come true in this one life you have. Love yourself and put aside what others think of you” Asma concludes.

Karoline Chérie - Embracing her differences Karoline Chérie is 48 years old and mother of three. That does not stop her from modelling. Reporter by profession, she has happily posed for this month’s issue.
2013 after more than 15 years of marriage, “With respect to traditions, I had to be a perfect mother and housewife. Today, I dare to break free, be different and open-minded. I am now living”.
At 18, Karoline Chérie made her first step in the fashion industry. She began rampwalking in night clubs, “But, I was uncomfortable when people stared at me. Thus, I stopped. I was noticed by several photographers and I was even offered to participate in Miss Meeting beauty pageant. I was naive at the time. The idea of walking and showcasing my body to the crowd, freaked me. But at 40, I felt alive again. I was carried away by the whirlwind of modelling”. She confides that she never consider herself to be pretty, “People tend to compliment me and it always surprises me”.
Earlier, karoline was working in the transport sector. “This field is heavily male-dominated. I was focused on my work. Juggling between my profesional life, the kids, the household chores and my activities such as basketball and handball, helped to keep me fit” she adds.
She remembers being ashamed of her miscegenation background when she was younger, “I was born in Saint-Denis in La Réunion, to a Kabyle father and a Reunionese mother. Some used to call me “tuft”. I never thought my differences would one day be an asset. Today, I am proud of my tuft”. Karoline Chérie likes colours and fabrics. “Whenever I watched modelling shows on television, I used to think of myself on the ramp” she says. She privileges simple and relax clothes because of the nature of her work. She tends to limit to a white or black t-shit over a pair of jeans. Her look is completed with a jacket and boots. “My style is mostly masculine. I have a soft spot for men’s shirts and ties. Besides, my wardrobe is full of them. Well, it has been a little over a decade now since I started wearing dresses. My third pregnancy triggered it” she says with a smile. Her daughters who are 22 and 18 years old, are also fashion addicts. Karoline also has a 9-year-old son. She got divorced in
This 16th July, Karoline will be completing five years as a reporter for Zinfos974, a news website. She is also an assistant director and a freelancer for the newspaper, “When I started working for Zinfos974, I already had my own column, “Party”. Besides sports, she writes on cultural and artistic events as well as portraits. She will be celebrating her 48th birthday in September. “The real beauty, for me, lies in people’s eyes. They are the mirror of the soul as some put it. Maybe that is why, I love photography. I love to capture people’s facial expressions during events. I take great pleasure in sharing these moments. The feeling is different from that when I am the one posing”. “I have to thank Sachin Sagar for giving me the opportunity to appear in his magazine. He believed in me. He knew how to put me at ease and he had the right choice of words. When he first contacted me, I could not believe my ears. I loved posing for the Newstyle” she concludes.
