A

ngelina Kali is a model and a fashion blogger based in London, England. She was recently invited to Mauritius as a fashion and lifestyle blogger. She had several photoshoots on the beautiful island as well as an interview with one of the leading local press groups.

“It was my first visit to Mauritius. It has been one of my must-visit destinations as I have heard so many great things about the island. I even had the privilege to model for one of your leading fashion designers in London and so I was intrigued to find our more about the place. And I was definitely not disappointed. It is such an amazing place” says Angelina Kali. Although she has had active social media accounts, she began to take fashion blogging seriously about two years ago. “The main aspect of my fashion blogging is to provide my followers and fans with posts on the latest fashion - what is worn at red carpet and high profile events, fashion tips, how to look good without breaking the bank and generally provide inspiration on style. Also as part of the fashion and lifestyle blogging, I post about the places visited such as the wonderful the One and Only St. Gerain Hotel in Mauritius. I was fortunate enough to get to try out their spa and then post a write up about my experience. I highly recommend trying out the spa as I felt completely rejuvenated afterwards” she explains. On the other hand, Angelina Kali is also a model. “A friend of mine entered me into a beauty contest when I was 17. At that age I was really shy and rather reluctant. But with support from my family and friends, I went ahead and participated. I happened to win it and that is how I ended up becoming a model. It has enabled me to travel throughout the world from gracing the catwalks during the London, Paris and Dubai fashion weeks to editorial shoots in exotic locations such as the Maldives, Hong Kong, Dubai and now Mauritius” she remembers.

A few back, she won the 2018 Female Model of the Year Award at IAA, “It is such an honour to win this title as it is chosen by my fellow peers within the industry. It shows that one should never give up and keep working hard to achieve one’s dreams. Sometimes dreams can be turned into reality. A shortlist of contestants is drawn up by the IAA Committee and then there is a vote. This is why it means so much to me as the Award was given for all the hard work and sacrifices I have made throughout the year and my career as a model”. Angelina’s favourite style, when modelling, is fairy tale gowns. “It makes me feel like a princess wearing one of those amazing creations. Unfortunately, one cannot wear that kind of dress on a daily basis. I try to wear clothes that are feminine and comfortable. It is not what you wear that is important but how you wear it. One can look very fashionable in affordable clothing, especially if one combines them with a stylish accessory” she shares. She also likes dancing. “Dancing is a passion of mine. It is a great way to have fun whilst also staying in shape. When I have time, I like to play the piano. But my first passion as a child was languages. I won a national language competition at school, and I dreamt of becoming a translator at the United Nations. That did not pan out but it is one of the driving forces why I have started to forge a career as a journalist specialising in fashion and lifestyle. And fashion blogging is part of this process” concludes Angelina Kali.

A result of passion! 26

M

anjusha Faugoo is living her dreams. The 26-year-old, is flying to Philippines on the second week of September. Although her journey at Estrella Mauritius ended at the semi-finals, her drive and determination remained unchanged. She has been chosen to represent the island at the Miss Asia Pacific International.“I feel humbled and honored to represent my country of birth, it’s values and it’s people. Whatever I am in my life is a result of what my country has given to me and having the opportunity now to let the flag of my country shine through me is an absolute privilege” says the Paralegal at LawSure Chambers.

Though it is her first international pageant, she is not a novice in this field. “I participated in Miss Mauritius National Pageant in 2015 and won the crown for Miss International Mauritius, I was even awarded as Miss Sports and Miss Congeniality. Due to some unfortunate incidents, I was unable to fly for my international pageant then. I competed in Estrella Mauritius in May 2018 and I was among the semi-finalists” Manjusha Faugoo adds. It has been her childhood dream to participate in a beauty pageant and wear the crown,“But as I learned more about pageantry, I realized that it’s more than just the catwalk and beautiful gowns. It’s in fact a platform where girls with dreams become ladies with vision. I auditioned thrice before my first selection and each time I gave an audition and whenever I participated, there was always something new I learnt about myself and about life. And there is no such opportunity of learning and growth that I will ever choose to let go”. As she grew up, she developped a good fashion sense, “My style is more classic and minimalist. I love being comfortable, yet elegant. I wear mostly figure fitted dresses or skinny pants and tops. I like the shades of blue, coral pink and black. My jewelry is very minimal. I stick mostly to golden, or navy blue colour jewelry. Sophisticated is timeless but it doesn’t have to be boring. It’s all about how you carry what you wear. I do experiement with colours whenever I can but I love keeping it simple and chic. Elegance, classy and sophistication, makes me feel more confident and empowered”. Manjusha Faugoo is the perfect beauty with brains! Not just a pageant girl, she made her way through as a Paralegal and a successful blogger. “Beauty with brains is a result of passion. Being passionate is to be appreciative of every little thing life has to offer, to be loving and compassionate of every individual and creature, and most importantly to have the drive to achieve your every dream and goals. It is when you are confident that you can be or do whatever it is that you want to, with however much you have. And this inner glow is what leads to a beautiful soul with intelligent brains” she explains.

43

44

SANJEET BOOLELL The 34-year old has been in the fashion field for almost eight years now. He has previously studied for five years in Melbourne, Australie and Milan, Italy. He launched his brand Guilded Art in 2013, “Once my childhood friend, Kevin, came back to Mauritius, he joined the business as Administrative Manager. I can thus focus entirely on my designs and productions”. Though he is not aware of it yet, Sanjeet Boolell is one of the most famous fashion designer in Mauritius. “I am always lost in my own thoughts” he replies. He tends to clarify that not all his family members are into politics, “There are microbiologists, accountants, lawyers, graphic designers, architects, doctors, jewelry designers, teachers, musicians and artists. We all have found a different way to express our creative mind and we did our best to convert our passion into our work. Every member of the Boolell family was encouraged to listen to their heart”. And Sanjeet Boolell chose to be a fashion designer. He adds that earning his living as a fashion designer is a challenge at first, “Once you establish a network of contacts, things flow. When you are kind, humble and put aside your ego, you make friends who want to see you succeed. This goes the same for every job except for politics,” he says jokingly. Guilded Art will soon present a Couture collection. It may be for this summer. Sanjeet Boolell describes his designs as deep with an edge experimentalism, “I take the time to observe and study on the elements which surround us. This thorough research then allows me to be as innovative as possible. My creative DNA believes in digging deep. My work speaks for itself. One is free to interpret it in his own way”.

Sanjeet Boolell enjoys challenges! He takes great pleasure in conceptualizing ready-to-wear ranging from cotton to denim. For Haute Couture, he works with satin silk, chiffon, organza and tulle. He also privilege appliqués such asembroidery and lace work. When it comes to his own wardrobe, he goes for comfort and simplicity! He likes colours and materials coordinated as well as layered wear for example jacket over a t-shirt and a fitted bootleg or cigarette-cut pants. For Sanjeet Boolell, each designer has his own merits, “it is better to appreciate and understand past and new generations’ work before forming an opinion about them”. But, he thinks that it is too early to speak about a fashion industry in Mauritius, “Nevertheless, we do have a textile and apparel industry which keeps booming with our competitive production cost. Being an optimist, I hope to see the fashion industry reach new heights on the island. It will not take long as we already have a large pool of creative fashion designers”. “There will not be a fashion industry until the government provides all the necessary support to fashion critics committee here on the island. Fashion Weeks, for example, will enable Mauritius to become a fashion hub in the Indian Ocean. This will give international fashion buyers, merchandisers, press and stylists the opportunity to talk about the local creativity. The fashion industry may be categorised as : One-off luxury goods (limited editions and unique items) for the upmarket, Mainstream luxury goods, demi couture (for the moderate budget), ready-to-wear and mainstream apparel” he recommends.

Despite their 5-years age gap, Ashish and Natasha Rughoobur share the same love for fashion. One is a Makeup artist and the other one is a model. Ashish celebrated his 19th birthday April last. It has been six years now since Ashish is into makeup. It all started with his mother painting on cloth, “I was always fascinated by her work and this how I developed an interest in art. I was among the best students in Visual Arts at school. As I grew up, I wanted to help people have a polished look. That is how I became a Makeup artist”. On the other side, his father valued beauty pageants. He used to say to think high of those who represent our country on an international level and competing alongside other beauty queens. Natasha aspires to be one of them. She started working towards her goal at the age of 17. She began doing photoshoots and thus made her first steps in the modelling industry. Today, she is 23. “After her first photoshoot in 2012, Natasha and I found that we want to evolve in the same environment. We started with amateur makeup and shoots at home itself” says Ashish Rughoobur.

56

Besides, sister and brother were both art students. It was not a surprise when they ended up working in the same field. The siblings are very close to each other, “As kids, we used to play fashionistas. She was my model and I used to be doll her up. We know each other so well that we happen to come up with same ideas most of the time”. Both help the other professionally. “Natasha poses as my model to build my portfolio and gives me a helping hand to display my work on the social media. So, we never viewed each other as a competitor”. Ashish Rughoobur shares that he is sometimes Natasha’s stylist, makeup artist, choreographer and photographer, “it has always been an immense pleasure. It reminds us of our childhood days”.

Asma Saleh Mohamed Harrad Ayroles Model at 36! “There is no shame in ageing” says Asma Harrad - Ayroles. The model celebrated her 36th birthday on the 4th of July, “I am rather proud of what I have achieved till now. It is difficult to evolve in this demanding field as ageing women are used to being pushed aside in the fashion industry”. For Asma, beauty is someone who is joyful, charismatic, elegant and most importantly is comfortable in his own skin. Asma is happily married to a painter and sculptor since the last 16 years, “My husband is always supportive. He does his best to make things look easy and he is happy to see me empowered”. The couple has two sons : Rehad and Yasha who are 9 and 12 years old respectively. The boys are also models for an agency in Paris, France and La Réunion. They had the opportunity to participate in campaigns for Disney, La Redoute, Absorba, Pardon and Noorgate to name a few. It has been two years since Asma settled in Saint-Denis, La Réunion, “The place makes me feel good and happy”. But she was born in Diego-Suarez in Madagascar to an indian-malagasy mother and yemeni father, “I grew up in a multicultural environment. It has been enriching. I have learnt to love and be tolerant of others”. She still remembers the first time she posed for a photographer. It was in her native city. “He said I was beautiful and he would like to click my pictures. I was surprised and then I found myself enjoying the photo shoot. Later, I was offered

72

the chance to be the face of a few brands. At 20, I started to participate in fashion shows inspite of my height” she relates. Besides modelling, Asma has a few experiences in insurance and events fields. She is also an art agent to her husband. “I am curious and I like to explore. I adapt easily to changes” she says. Asma has a good fashion sense. She never hesitates to experiment looks and wear designers’ creations, “I take pleasure in posing and doing fashion shows in clothes that I would maybe never dare to wear”. The model does not stick to one particular style. However, she feels more comfortable and free when wearing shorts and sneakers. She stays in shape just by walking even if earlier she used to play tennis and run. She does not stick to a diet. She eats what she likes. “Doing what makes us happy and empowered, give us strength to juggle between our different responsibilities. Being married with kids does not stop a woman from being glamorous and sexy. Catwalking and posing do not objectify a woman. People tend to mix issues. I love what I do. Dare to feel free and make your dreams come true in this one life you have. Love yourself and put aside what others think of you” Asma concludes.

nisha Gaya works in the Sales and is a Personal Trainer & Sport conditioning coach for Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa. She shares a few tips to motivate our readers to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Exercises help Anisha Gaya to feel great, look good and move well. “Keeping fit is a choice and a lifestyle. Health is the most important asset we possess. If you eat the right food and keeping fit, your body will be strong and help you cope with stress and also fight illness” says Anisha, 30-year-old. Since childhood, she has been close to sports. Anisha Gaya grew up with a father previously director of sports, a brother who is a weight lifter and a mother who is very active. She joined a gym at the age of 15 and started with aerobic classes. Since then, she enjoys working out. She makes it a priority to exercise at least 30 minutes daily, “When the moment come to go for my training, I leave the day behind, focus to refuel my mind the best I can”. To stay strong and fit, Anisha practices endurance exercises using exercise bands, weight machines, hand-held weights, TRX/Bodyweight training, core training, Yoga exercises as well as balance and flexibility exercises. The coach adds that physical activity/exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and proper nutrition (balanced diet) have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, exercising regularly can improve your quality of life.

73

74

Anisha Gaya recommends including this good habit in your lifestyle. It helps make you feel better in your body&mind. It transforms your body, accentuate your most radiant self and feel more confident, “As your body is the only vehicle to carry you throughout life, make sure you take good care of it’’. Besides cardio and muscle toning, it is very important to perform Functional training/ exercises. They have been developed to allow individuals to perform the activities of daily life more easily and without injuries, especially for elders”. “Why do we always think or refer to indoor gym when we take about health & fitness? Why not go outdoor to exercise in nature and breathe fresh air? The gym can be a complement to outdoor cardio and exercise. In a world where motorized vehicles are omnipresent, we walk/exercise less which is very harmful for your health” she explains. According to Anisha Gaya, walking will help you control your weight and get closer to nature. Bicycle riding is also a good option for cardio and contributes to less traffic as well as pollution. “I think in Mauritius, we should seriously think about having more parks and promenades for people who want to enjoy walk, jogging and biking” she highlights. Surrounded by beautiful beaches and warm ocean, swimming is one of the best activity on the island to resource your body and mind. Jogging and hiking will help you exercise and discover places.

On the other hand, cardio is as important as getting stronger. Training such as toning and muscle strengthening is essential to any health and fitness program, “As a personal trainer, I encourage men and women to know the unlimited power of their body. You can shape you life with good thoughts and clear vision of where and who you want to be. You can shape your body by taking care of it. This demands discipline and self motivation. Forget the myth that if women do weight training they will get muscular! On the contrary, they will get fitter, stronger and build/sculpt lean muscles” she explains. Anisha Gaya recommends exercises at least 5-6 times a week, for about 30minutes to 1hour. Enjoy the workout. For instance, if you do not like gym or indoor training, go outdoor and exercise at home with a personal training(she also offers home based training). “Find time your yourself & do that you enjoy the most. Not everyone is the same, each body type requires its own eating and exercise strategy. Remember, we all have the same amount of time in a day. You decide how you want to spend your time. Choose wisely and for your own good and benefits. For example, 1 or 2 times a week, after working hours, I go for a run on the beach for sunset, have a dip in the calm ocean & meditate on the beach for a few minutes” she shares.
