NOW FASHION - KNOTS GOLDEN GIRLS FASHION SHOW ARCHAIC MISS UNIVERSITY AFRICA 2019-2020 MISS ENGLAND 2019-2020 FITNESS - GOLFER, ROSHAN KOONJA
ISSUE 29 AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL THE BEAUTIFUL SOULS OUT THERE
Know that you are unique in your own special way. Most of us struggle with our body image struggling to fit in a mould. I want all of you to remember that no matter what you see in the mirror, your self-worth is not defined by your looks. The standards set by the beauty industry are unrealistic and being a photographer I can reassure you no one wakes up as perfect as they look on a magazine cover. There are many tricks in the trade to enhance the way a person looks but the image depicted is unfortunately not a true portrayal of reality. Own your body the way it is and style it the way you want. There are no rules in fashion as to what befits a skinny or a voluptuous body as long as you embrace a healthy lifestyle and feel good in your skin. Love your curves and don’t be stigmatized by what is ideally attractive…

INTERVIEW WITH
SAMUEL DAVID HAIRSTYLIST
Fashion hairstylist and artist Samuel David is a real art-lover and has over 12 years of professional experience cutting and styling hair. For him, Beautiful is a feeling and is a motto. His work has been exposed over the past years in fashion shows, photo sessions or television. Follow our team to discover his artistry… What do almost all the best models’ heads of Mauritius have in common? Samuel David! He is on the speed dial of almost every designer and photographer, including the grand models. Samuel David is undoubtedly among the most in-demand hair stylist on the Island. Models and famous people always have fabulous hair - from flowing long locks to perky bobs, their hair are tamed to perfection. Samuel is 25 years old and loves arts and everything related to it. With a study background in Art, he points out that this is a universal language. He recalls his childhood and where he started. “When I was a baby, I found a particular interest in hair. I was always playing with people’s hair around me and at 9 years old, my family noticed that I was gifted with hairstyling. I was really passionate about it. I found it funny to do braids in my little sister’s hair, brushing, hair colors and relaxer in my family and cousins hair.” With the encouragement of his parents, he decided to carry on in this direction and start his training at 13 years old. He worked in a hair salon during week-ends and school holidays where his interest in this field grew up. For Samuel, the appeal of hairdressing is tangled up in the heady world of fashion. His passion is what creates his motivation. He is more than passionate and is in love with what he is doing. “Seeing the positive response and encouragement from people around me is what makes me happy. Moreover, my bride’s and models’ beauty is a great achievement at a professional level,” he says. If some of you may not have heard about Samuel until now, there is no doubt that you recognize much of his work. There can’t be many jobs that take you from small town obscurity to jet-setting. But for Samuel David, it was taking up the art of hairdressing that transformed his life and took him from an amazing journey across the globe.
10
With Celebrity hairdresser Troy Turner as a model, Samuel draws his inspiration from the New Yorker’s work. He is more than categorical that Creativity is what matters most in hair styling. “Based on the different situations, you need to be able to manage different types of hair and create different hairstyles which will perfectly match with the concept when it comes to a fashion show, a photo shoot etc. For Bridals and wedding guests, the Hairstylist should be able to create the perfect hairstyle to make the bride look fabulous and comfortable,” explains our artist. Being a perfectionist, Samuel never leaves his work without a full satisfaction. To improve his styling capacities and get more inspiration, he follows the latest trends and makes sure to always be up to date. Despite his outgoing personality, Samuel is much of a loner in his work. A challenging aspect whenever he has limited time and a lot of hair styles to do. He points out that time management is an important element to consider. With time, Samuel has learnt to deal with pressure. “The more you master your techniques, the more you succeed in all types of challenges,” he explains. With his expertise, our young man has always been able to deliver quality work and always make sure to please his clients and be considerate as much as he can. For him, hairstyling is about being as close as possible to the client so as to get maximum information about their personality. His greatest achievement so far? Being able to do what he is doing right now: practicing his two passions, notably teaching Visual Art in an International School and working as a Professional Hairstylist. If he was to give some tips to Newstyle readers, Samuel would go for: 1) Choose the right hairdresser for your haircut, 2) Use a good brand for you shampoo and conditioner and 3) Use good heat protector while using heat on your hair. The young man has some big projects in his pockets… some that he cannot reveal for now. So, huuuuush…we will simply keep following him. With the current interview with Newstyle magazine, Samuel hopes for even bigger things ahead. “New Style Online Magazine is great as it’s accessible to everyone and it’s a good platform to promote and support new talents and professionals in all artistic platforms. So don’t forget to subscribe to the magazine.”

ENTRETIEN AVEC
SAMUEL DAVID COIFFEUR

INTERVIEW WITH
ALEXANDRA JUGLALL
STYLIST
Nowadays, the visual universe is taking over. Social media networks are the leading channel for everything related to exposure. Social networks give us space to fill with our own aesthetics. More and more images need to be created in order to keep track. This also means more and more images need to be created in order to be trendy. In the fashion realm, who are those behind the big brand’s shots? We met Alexandra Juglall who has made styling her profession. Amidst a world of constantly circulating images, the steady flux of images, discovering one’s own aesthetics and ‘’eyeshot voice” is as crucial as ever. As part of our time for artists’ stories, in which we look at the world of talented women, we met Alexandra and talked to her about her life as a designer every day and how it is reflected in her own life. Alexandra Juglall is 45 years old, and has been into sewing since her very young age. Her career started when she was 15 when she was making her own clothes and those of her surroundings. “I am with this gift if you want to say. I have always had a needle for sewing or a pencil for scribbling models,” she says. For many may ask how interest in fashion or design might be sparked, Alexandra relates that her interest in Fashion has always been there. This has been flowing in her veins. More than a simple word, FASHION for the lady is associated to LIFE. She mentions that she is nothing without fashion, her tons of fabrics and her drawings.
A daily challenge in her work is something Alexandra needs to properly handle. However, she always does her best to manage everything. “ Big orders to return, new customers coming to my place, phone ringing all the time, a sick employee and therefore absent, myself being sick…I guess I handle everything with a smile and faith in God,” mentions our designer. Moreover, working with customers is not always an easy task. Mostly when you have unsatisfied ones. Alexandra’s professionalism is what helps her to always find a solution. Listening and considering the complaints is the secret weapon! Her biggest achievement so far is her first parade with Emily Philips at the Hennessy Park Hotel. “But there is no bigger one! I give my all for everything I do! No half-measurement,” she says. Taking from the making of Miss Mauritius dresses to Miss University of Africa and newspapers makeover, Alexandra has achieved great things till now. Featuring in Newstyle magazine is a great honor for our lady. In fact, she is currently taking part in some fashion shows and this is what gives her the edge! “Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes,” she says. She does not intend to stop! Any plan for the future? Surprise, Surprise! In the meantime, here are some fashion tips from our super designer, wear appropriate underwear, a woman must absolutely have a little black dress in her wardrobe and consider accessories. “It’s true that Curvy is currently very trendy but you have to be careful about your health! A little sport and a good diet only serves to boost the mind and figure of the modern woman!”
What keeps Alexandra motivated is her desire and love to create beautiful pieces for her customers. But above all, it is the customers’ satisfaction which takes over. Fashion has always been serious for our stylist. This is what made her make a career out of it. “Alexandra fairy-fingered would be nothing without her designs!” she says. As opposed to a lot of designers who studied fashion design, Alexandra is self-made and very proud of it. In order to stay abreast of the latest trends, she follows the different news, catwalks, and major events around the world. “Not an easy” tasks to begin a label! Many designers would agree with that. So would Alexandra. Her work has evolved with Ups and Downs since she started her own label. But downs that made her want to grow up and become a better version of her.

ALEXANDRA JUGLALL
STYLISTE

INTERVIEW WITH
DIRECTOR & MAKEUP ARTIST HANS DAX
OF MISS UNIVERSITY AFRICA MAURITIUS
His name is no longer a secret to the public. Often associated with the artistic world, he carries in his fashion shows, photo sessions and collaborations. Hans Dax, professional make-up artist, shares his experience with Miss University Africa in this interview. Meeting... Miss University Africa encompasses 54 countries, including Mauritius. This competition, whose director is Hans Dax, also the make-up artist, highlights the beauty as well as the intelligence of the candidates. “Miss University Africa has been such a wonderful experience. It’s too sad that it’s already over but we’re up for the next edition,” says the young man. Since 2017, Hans Dax has been at the head of the competition in Mauritius. He makes sure that everything runs smoothly and that the competition is a great success with the help of his stunning team. “I really have a great team! With Samuel David who is the Vice President of the competition, Victoria Duval as the fashion show advisor, Samuel Kees from Coreame as the choreographer and Thierry Cornet, the Coordinator, we can only hope for great results,” he says. With his 3rd year as National Director of MUA Mauritius, Hans Dax is also the French translator. After the two calls for applications, ten young women were chosen among the sixty. Ten who, according to the organizing team, were among those with the most potential. The ten girls had to work diligently for two months. “After these two months, they all became a better version of themselves. “Miss University Africa does not include the wearing of a swimsuit. An established choice to show that inner beauty can take over that of the body. As a preparation: meetings with the girls twice a week for two months, a fashion show training by Victoria, public speaking coaching, as well as rehearsals for different choreographies that were done by Samuel. When you think about big event preparations, you also think about the disadvantages. Among them, financial support. Main element in any organization. “A beauty contest requires a lot of money. However, we are grateful for the help of our promoters who made our work much easier. It also happened that girls were sometimes
38
discouraged. We had to constantly motivate them to stay focused,” Hans says. Creating wonderful memories is not what was missing from this contest. One of the best for Hans was the one the day before the final where the whole team had rehearsed for a whole day on stage. “Everyone was so happy with the results that all played the sega and danced together. We were all impressed on the finals day because the girls performed even better than in rehearsals. “As for the winner of the 2019 edition, Hans describes her as a “hard worker, always ready to help. » He reports that Ingrid Noyaux was not necessarily the one who walked by or expressed herself best when she joined the competition. “She has learned to polish her flaws and transform her weaknesses into strength. I am confident that she will successfully reign on the international scene and that she may win the crown again in Mauritius. “Supports our Director of Competition. His message to potential candidates? “Trust yourself. A beauty contest is more than just walking in heels and wearing beautiful dresses. It is a unique life experience that will make you grow as a person and develop your skills to discover the best version of yourself. And since our competition is not a bikini competition, we invite all those who meet the criterias (i.e. those aged 18 to 26 who are currently studying at the tertiary level with a minimum height of 1m65) to have a go and maybe win the crown and represent Mauritius on the international level. »

INTERVIEW WITH
ALISHA VICTORIA COWIE
MISS ENGLAND 2019-2010
Alisha Victoria Cowie’s life forever changed in 2018 when she was crowned Miss England, beating contestants from other countries. The 19-year-old model, who was representing the UK, wore a sparkling dress that she said was greatly inspired, as she was handed the crown in front of a roaring crowd. Newstyle spoke with the beauty queen about becoming Miss Universe and how she managed to feel confident while rocking a swimsuit. t is kind of rare that something pops up into your mind when you are proclaimed to be Miss of a country. Like, you can simply see facial expressions with incredulous words. It is a feeling of entering into a dream state when you look back on the memory…such a blur! All the excitement, all the work from the past couple of months, all the effort just pinnacled to this one point. “I didn’t know I was going to win Miss England 2018. Although I had worked the hardest I could have I didn’t know what the judges were looking for. It was a total surprise,” exclaims our young lady. But she just remember walking out there and hearing the cheers and seeing the UK flags. She just knew that she felt so fulfilled that she was able to bring that kind of joy to her country. She also knew that so many English all over the world were watching on their screens, just not at the arena themselves, and they were just so happy that she was able to create that kind of happiness. The young lady just felt over the moon. “I did not expect to be chosen at all and I thank them all for choosing me,” she says. Bringing out the beauty of UK Alisha stood on the final stage of the Miss England where she gave her speech to compete with the other finalists. It turned out that she not only shined at the contest but also took home the winning title. Consequently, she will act as the UK ambassador to foster good relationship. For her, all of the girls were wonderful in their own ways and tried extremely hard to give the best of them. “I did not see anyone as a competitor. We all deserved that crown,” she mentions. As this was the first time she wins such a huge competition, she thought that she should give it a try to mark something new for herself and gain new perspectives. She has definitely attained them and remindeherself how trying new things and leaving one’s comfort zone can open doors to new opportunities.
Alisha is a full-time model in UK. She feels that when people think of modeling, the first things that come to their mind are usually easy life, glamour and travelling. Alisha has a love for this world and would put all her energy in her work. During the competition, Alisha developed good relationships with other countries, which helped her create more “world-wide” connections. “I made friends with many of the girls at Miss World but my main connections were with Finland, Latvia, Spain, Wales and Northern Ireland,” relates our young lady. Taking part in international contests, for sure, brings out the best in you. However, it makes no doubt that this affects one’s private life. For our Miss, having such international exposure hopefully never affected her private life in a bad way. “You go opening up to media and there are always questions about your private life,” she admits. Trip to Mauritius The 26th annual ceremony of the World Travel Awards was held few weeks back where our Miss and her partner were invited. That was the occasion for them to visit the island. “I have heard many people speak of how beautiful Mauritius was through word of mouth from friends and family.” Mauritius conquered our young lady who qualifies the island as “an absolute Paradise”, a romance spot. “It is the best place I have ever visited!” exclaims Alisha. In the meantime, Miss England sees herself as a university graduate in five years and as a… (Drum roll) DETECTIVE! “However, you never know where life can take you. My plan is to go with the flow.” She counts on Newstyle Magazine to lead her partner Joe and her to other jobs. Her message to Newstyle readers: Be your true self and enjoy everything in life while you can.

ENTREVUE AVEC
ALISHA VICTORIA COWIE
MISS ENGLAND 2019-2020

AN INTERVIEW WITH
GOLFER
ROSHAN KOONJA We are very pleased to present you for this twenty-ninth edition of Newstyle magazine Roshan Koonja, Golfer. For us, we are thrilled to see him do so well and we are proud to be part of his journey towards the realization of his goal. Recently we caught up with him to see how he was living his passion. Follow us... CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF? My name is Roshan Koonja, 45 years old, married and happy with two children, Akshi and Om. They are 11 and 6 years old respectively. I have a degree in computer science and engineering and have been working in the technology field for over 22 years now. I also hold an MBA from the University of Birmingham and an MSc from Lancaster University. I passionately enjoy speaking and writing for hotel technology conferences around the world, and I was recently nominated for the SuperNova Awards California, which recognize leaders in disruptive technologies. Currently, I work as Chief Information Officer of the Constance Hotels, Resorts and Golf Group, where I actively provide vision and leadership in the development and implementation of business-oriented ICT initiatives. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO BECOME A GOLFER? My office is right in front of the golf courses of the Belle Mare Plage hotel and every day I watched the players walking around. The game really intrigued me and I wanted to explore it more. Since I like challenges, I started a trip to explore this wonderful world of golf and I was really in love with the game. 10 years later, my love for the game continues to grow. TELL US ABOUT YOUR GOLF EXPERIENCE. I was given a pretty good handicap of 22 when I joined the federation and gradually progressed to 13.7. Throughout my golf career, I have been fortunate to win many prestigious golf competitions including the Mauritius Golf Federation, the Gymkhana Medal, the One and Only St Geran Open, the Jaguar Open, the Lions Club and recently the World Corporate Golf Challenge and I represented Mauritius at this international event.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME A GOLFER? As Bobby Jones said: “Golf is the game that comes closest to the game we call life. You get good shots, good shots, good shots, good shots, good shots, but you have to play the ball where it is.” Golf really teaches you the lesson of life and how to appreciate and overcome obstacles and obstacles. During the golf game, I clear my mind in a beautiful landscape and concentrate only on the ball. This allows me to cut myself off from the complexities of the modern world while exercising. It is therefore good for the mind and body. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? No two golf shots are alike. Every time we hit, it’s as if we were playing a new one with new challenges. You win or lose, there’s always a lesson to learn. We love good moves and we learn from our bad moves. It’s what keeps us coming back over and over again and motivates me to go further every time I’m back at the golf course. WHO IS YOUR GOLF MODEL? Hmmm, I think it would be Tiger Woods. He really democratized the game and opened so many golf academies to help young people adopt it. Unfortunately, no one is perfect. He had some personal problems and was very low morally and in his game. But it has also recently shown the greatest comeback in the history of golf. It shows the beauty of the game and that we must never let go and always try to be better. Hard work always pays off. WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT GOLF? It’s hard to find something you don’t like about golf. But if I have to say, that’s the time it takes to play a game that ranges from 4 to 5 hours where I could have spent time with my children and family. Sometimes I really miss them when I’m playing Km away all day long.
67
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT GOLF? I think there are a lot of things to love in golf, not one. To begin with, golf is a gentleman’s game played by a gentleman. We have a code of conduct called “etiquette” and we expect all good golfers to comply with it. For me, this game is sacred and must be played with all the respect it deserves. In addition, golf is considered the ideal networking environment for all kinds of professionals and services. I would say that golf is the ultimate business tool. You can schedule a meeting with a client in an office surrounded by water, nature and sand instead of four white walls. This instantly creates a more relaxed and friendly environment in which you can do business without the normal distractions. Besides, it’s a game for life. It is a sport that is suitable for all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Thanks to the disability system, people with very different abilities can play on an equal footing. Most importantly, you can profile and learn more about a person in four hours of golf than in a lifetime of meetings. Not only by what they say, but by the way they behave on the course. Do they respect the rules or the label? A person’s behavior on the golf course will invariably be reflected in the person’s character in society. So it is also a good profiling tool. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A GOLFER? I’ve won a number of awards in my golfing career but I think the greatest one would be World Corporate Golf Challenge that has given me the opportunity to play at an international level with great players from around the globe.
68
ARE YOU A PATIENT PERSON? Patience is a virtue. In today fast moving world, it’s becoming more and more difficult to be patient. People want everything fast and now. I was not always very patient but thanks to Golf, it has helped me to inculcate this virtue in me and I’m slowing becoming more and more patient and learn to appreciate more and more the beauty of life and nature. WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST WEAKNESSES? I would say it would have been patience but thanks to golf, I am able to work on it, day in day out. WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST STRENGTHS? I think I’m a very determined person that does not hesitate to take on new challenges and more importantly I do not fear to lose, as I believe that in each failure there is an opportunity to learn new things that will make me grow further and become a better person and golfer. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A GOLFER? Ever challenging myself and never stops in believing in me to get to the next milestone. Also being a golfer allows me to network with people from different background, culture and regions that helps me to develop empathy and grow as a person. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? I think I would like to work a more on my golf and get my handicap from 13.7 to a single digit. This would be the next achievement for me. May be do a hole-in-one which I’ve not been able to do till now.
