Everybody loves to attend great events. This is a fact! However, it is often rare that we really consider all the planning that went into making it happen. As for Meritess Beharry ? Well, it is safe to say that she is ALWAYS thinking about it. Meritess Beeharry is the Director of Holdem Events, co-founder of the NGO Holdem Foundation and Director of the Holdem Foundation Academy, a fully owned school dedicated to Special Education Needs based in Quatre-Bornes. A “proud Mauritian citizen” as she states. Covering all types of events, Holdem events is mostly dedicated to providing clients with events that they will never forget. Encounter… Meritess’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for event planning began when she was young but did not manifest into a career right away. She quickly realized that her love for event planning could be turned into a business, and thus, gave it a GO! While life as an event planner can be difficult, mostly with its working hours, the results are definitely worth it for Meritess. Her attention to organization and prioritization allows her to stay on top of her work, while the relationships she builds with her clients result in an experience everyone is happy with. By taking a huge chance and embracing opportunity, Meritess was able to create a career that makes her excited to wake up and face the new day – every day. Her journey into event planning was more of a natural evolution inspired by something that has always been a passion of hers – helping people and making them smile. “I run one of the largest Event Management Company of Mauritius, which ventured into organizing world-class musical artists in Mauritius. I am also the executive director of the Holdem Foundation, a fully independent NGO focusing on the wellbeing of children across the island. Our actions over the last few years have helped thousands of children to find their bearings and first necessities. One of the most prominent action was to create the Holdem Foundation Academy, a state-of-the-art school dedicated to special needs children. I also sit in the board of Holdem Group, a highly innovative conglomerate based in Mauritius and having business in several sectors across the region,” she states. Holdem Events is a new event management agency specializing in end-to-end design and production of concerts, international conferences, product launches and corporate events which means we can work in any location, indoor, outdoor, public spaces, etc. The goal of this company is to tailor-made its services to the specific needs of its customers and understand the philosophy and message they want to communicate through colorful events. Holdem Events brings dreams while maintaining a keen sense of professionalism. This company helps its customers to make the most of the services offered and thus creates a rewarding and unforgettable experience. Holdem Events brings at the same time another dimension to the world of events in Mauritius thanks to a more intimate approach while taking into consideration the desires of culture lovers. The team organizes as many events as they are asked to do, giving the best of themselves in and every time. They also have their own inhouse events under the banner of “We Love Pop”, which is now at its fourth edition.

Each of these events helped Meritess acquire experience, knowledge and a network of successful professionals from various industries. She is a true believer that everything happens for a reason. The journey led her to discovering what she really loves to do. “My position is to guide a set of values that have been defined and clarified over years since I acquired the strength to get into the business world. These are key criteria that serve as a reference to help make the right choices about any projects,” she explains. It seems like she has always been planning events. Naturally, Meritess has been looking for ways to improve operationally, improve efficiency and develop best practices. A big part of the evolving process is building relationships of trust and vision with vendors and acquiring knowledge of venues to fit clients’ style and vision. According to our businesswoman, Teamwork is undoubtedly the most effective way to lead your company to the success you predestine it to be. It is her magic recipe for any successful event. In general, a team is made up of individuals or professionals who can work together to achieve common objectives. Employees can share tasks and help each other, an employee who prefers to work alone will never be able to escape the stresses of everyday life until he or she has joined a team. Our lady believes that the advice to collaborators can be very useful, helping to maintain cohesion within the team. Currently, Meritess and her team are working on the fourth edition of We Love Pop with the famous DJ Snake. A big challenge for her team.” DJ Snake being one of the Top DJ’s in the world requires a lot of preparation and hard work and mental strength. All technical aspects for his venue need to be at the highest level. He has specific requirements for his live show never been seen in Mauritius so far. Our team is actually working for a unique show in a brand-new place at Cote D’Or to meet up all the expectations of this artists and the public,” she relates. The most exciting part of this event for Meritess? It is all about the organization and the welcoming of the biggest artists of this century. The adrenaline of the concert being done as expected after weeks of preparations, sleepless nights and full dedication! It is the great Armin Van Buuren that she would wish to welcome in her wildest dreams. Let us keep fingers crossed! Holdem events is looking forward to many more events – mainly colourful ones! A means to create a cultural bridge between Mauritius and the outside world is of paramount importance and to perpetuate an evolution in the local artistic field. “it is necessary to provide an inclusive education that values diversity and takes into consideration the difference of each of them. In an inclusive environment, every child feels safe. However, parents will also have to participate in this education by cultivating and practicing civic education at home. We are constantly learning and to build on good foundations it is imperative to consolidate the next generation,” she says. Behind these words, Meritess hopes that Newstyle will be giving her more visibility. Explaining exactly how a concert of this scale is not only about what can be seen on stage or in the marketing strategy. The event world is a very challenging environment because each event has to be outperformed each time. “My advice to the readers is that everything is possible with hard work and dedication. Never give up on your dreams. Surround yourself with inspiring elements! You will quickly feel the impact of their positive and caring waves on your productivity. And remember one thing: the greater your ambitions, the less seriously you will be taken,” she says.

SUMMER BOHO WITH SANDRINA ARNASSALON ft. RITU KUMAR Now is the time to settle down with Sandrina Arnassalon. Fashion advice and confessions from a fashion enthusiast who has been able to launch the wildest styles. “Summer Boho” announced the color at the “NowFashion” of the Backstage Lounge Bar at the Hennessy Park Hotel. A glance back at this colourful evening.... In her environment, fabrics, sketches, sewing machines prevail. Behind the curtains, clothes with original shapes are suspended on the hangers. An inanimate model is also dressed in a perfectly curved and colorful outfit. We are meeting Sandrina, a Mauritian designer whose imagination has never failed to amaze us by knowing how to decrypt the latest trends! His training, in fact, is permanent. It is ongoing today and will continue tomorrow. She started out early and would finish as later as possible. Moreover, it was in a beautiful setting at the Hennessy Park Hotel that the young woman embraced her passion during the “Summer Boho” fashion show. With a vast choice of clothes, the young woman was more than surprised by all the beautiful designs. “I didn’t want to do an Indian concept, I went to the shop in Trianon knowing only that the concept should be Summer Boho,” she says. With the help of her family and friends in her workshop, our stylist managed to get what she was looking for. She wanted above all to keep this bohemian style alive. And this vision was well understood by her team at work!

Her love for fashion design came from her teenage years and it gradually took hold of her. Her initial contact with fabric was established through her encounters. A journey that required a lot of time and patience. In any event, she has gradually surrounded herself with more and more artistic moods. It is notably through the Bohemian Indian style that Sandrina has seen herself creating a unique style in the parade. “The Bohemian Indian style is a look that consists of mixing Western clothes to create a unique look,” she explains. She likes to create rather than copy! This show, under this bohemian theme, has been a real challenge for Sandrina because she didn’t know the sponsors. “For jewelry sponsors, since this was an online store, I selected all the unique pieces to create the look after choosing the clothes. All this was achieved thanks to the incredible team that understood my vision and the models involved,” says Sandrina. His collaboration with make-up artist Akshay Goteea and stylist Chaad Vince (Call Him Dude), hairdressers and those who helped out has been a real success. Nuance by sandrina, under the sponsorship of Label Ritu Kumar, has been an excellent collaboration for nowfashion by sachin sagar at Backstage. The unique fabrics and prints could only improve her style. Launched in 2002 as an international brand, Label Ritu kumar relies on inspiring design talents from all over the world to create an undeniably distinctive trendy product. The shop has been opened in 2015 in Trianon business park which is not uninteresting for fashion lovers.

MODEL OF THE MONTH Alaika Ilhaam, 19 years old, is considered a leading figure and one of the most seen faces at the moment. She recently told Newstyle magazine about what it is like to be one of the most seen models in Mauritius. Among the revelations were her incredible adventures. What impressed us the most was her composure in addition to her high visibility.... Follow us to meet her! Alaika, who lives in Quatre Bornes and is a student, eloquently summarizes the idea that there is beauty in individuality. For her, everyone is different and has their own personality. When she entered the world of fashion, the young woman was given the chance to showcase her creativity and was able to try out new concepts with make-up artists and photographers. At the age of 15, Alaika took her first steps into the folk world of fashion at HEAT. A world that generously opened its arms to her. At 17, she tasted at her first shoot with a filmmaker. When we discovered Alaika, she had at a few followers. In less than a month, she quickly reached more than 1000. It is more than just her beauty that attracts. It is also about her history and the journey she has had. An exposure under the spotlights that the young woman plans to use to inspire others. “As a model, I only tell the world about the positive things, the exciting adventures, the new concept of each shoot and of course the brilliant and dazzling magazines’ publications, but never the secrets on the other side,” she explains.

Unlike many models, Alaika did not encounter any great difficulties because she was lucky enough to be surrounded by extraordinary people who were able to provide her with all the support and excellent guidance. “My family is very motivating in this area because they have helped me develop in many ways,” she says. Moreover, it is with Women Secret, a major brand of underwear on the island, that the young woman recently had the chance to work. Beyond modelling, Alaika often gets lost in another kind of artistic activity: painting. She loves more than anything trying new things in life. “This environment brings together many make-up artists, photographers, models and many brands. It gives us the opportunity to learn new things and have fun at the same time because everyone is passionate about their work in this sector,” she says. For the gorgeous woman, consistency and self-love are essential to success. It is by flying around the world and running her own business that the young woman sees herself in 15 years.

When asked, Alaika also reveals that with all the beautiful and talented beauties of Mauritius, it is not easy to be a model because there is a lot of competition and it takes a lot to really become a success story. This is something to inspire young and old who want to be successful in this environment.

Male model Oushal Kauleedoss talks with Newstyle magazine about his routine, why he lifts, his secret to look sexy and his time allocated to take care of himself. Oushal Kauleedoss has one of the most in demand face and body in the fashion and fitness modelling realm in Mauritius. All of this did not come easily. To remain in the best shape possible for specific events or photo shoot requires hard work, dedication and focus. Oushal Kauleedoss has it all! He explains his secrets on staying in shape and achieving this great physique. Follow us… Aged 25, Oushal lives in Curepipe and works in the Sales and Marketing while also being a part-time model. He started to train at 17 and it was a that time that he started modelling, where he considers it important to have a fit body. Today, he locally recognized as one of the best models on the island, catching photographers’, designers’ attention. “I got into modelling during school days. A teacher asked me if I was interested to get involved in the school’s fashion show. Since I am so fascinated by the world of fashion, I agreed with no hesitation,” he recalls. Oushal has always been very well groomed. This is one of his best assets! He is one of a kind, always taking care of his skin, hair, nails etc. “If women are allowed to do so, then what about us men? (laughs),” he says. His major inspirations? The one and only David Beckham and Mariano Di Vaio among others. At Newstyle magazine, we want to give everyone a glimpse of all the different types of fitness-focused lifestyles that people are involved in. For instance, our Greek God has been involved in athletics, fitness & modelling over the years where he has been an image model for some apparel brands over the years along with appearing in commercials or fashion shows of great designers. As we can guess, a physique like his does not maintain itself on its own. Oushal states that his ideal physique would be located between fashion and fitness model, lean muscles with a little less body fat. In other words, the type of body of a Greek god. The best part of his body? “My abs and shoulders…people often say I have a beautiful wide shoulder (smiles),” he claims. In addition, Oushal the Greek God has a very specific training routine to maintain himself. Each morning, I do a little cardio as in 30 minutes and in the evening, it is an intense workout with weights within 1hr30mins.

For most fitness models, it can be guessed that Diet is a key part of their training schedules for sure. Many people might say or think that a well-built body is a product from work outside the gym, not just inside it. Quality protein and carbohydrates are the building blocks to always have as a foundation. Then it is just adding and subtracting them based on the current goals. Contests and model shoots sometimes require to up protein intake and cut back on carbohydrates a bit. For Oushal, diet is something quite simple. “On days where I lift heavy weights and work on big muscles like legs, back and chest, it’s high in carbohydrates, such as pasta, lots of vegetables and protein, and on other days it’s low in carbohydrates, such as protein such as eggs, chicken, meat and fish and a green salad. Not to mention the fruit after each meal! I also have a cheating meal on Sundays depending on my weekly training,” he shares with us. Despite the impressive physique he may have, Oushal continues to be a humble person, full of values. He accepts criticisms, which is a means for him to grow up, both mentally and spiritually. To date, his best achievement remains the Title of male’s physique that he won. “It means a lot to me to be recognized as a good male role model and, most importantly, a skilled one,” he mentions. As all of us, Oushal is full of goals. Among others, getting ready for next year men’s fitness competition is a major one. The young man states that it takes a lot of time and effort at the national level, not only for fitness but also for modelling as we may see in lots of magazines and fashion shows. “My message to you is that if you want to accomplish something, do it with your heart and soul. At times, you will feel downhearted, but never give up. We are all winners at the end of the day,” he says.
