ISSUE 40 EDITOR’S NOTE Looking (as always!) for fabulous talent. I recently ventured on social media miles away from my office...no, big joke! From my home, lockdown required. Sometimes, a new fashion season can seem overwhelming, with trends, images and statements that can’t be ignored and that knock us on all sides...it’s the same effect I get from a new talent I discover in someone...or a breathtaking career! Fabulous people who have so much to teach us. But sometimes a model or a designer - something like that - stops you. For me, that’s what happened when I laid eyes on the countless models, business professionals and others. I’ve been fortunate during my career to attend many fashion shows where more than elegant and embellished outfits have been unveiled. I watched from afar. The fact that designers, make-up artists, hairdressers can make us fall in love with looks again is a testament to their artistic genius.

Saachin Sagar

INTERVIEW WITH

CHANEL ETOWAR “I STAND UP FOR WHAT I BELIEVE IN!” If ever there was a fashion icon to discover and follow, it’s her. Beautiful, spontaneous, ambitious and hard-working, the pretty, confident brunette is leading a mind-blowing career. Impeccable cut, assertive style, infinite variety to meet the needs of a growing audience, Chanel Etowar shows an amazing self-confidence. We wished to discuss with Chanel, a strong and totally open-minded woman, in order to discover some good tips, fashion tricks and other useful information, in a good mood... WHEN STYLE REFLECTS PERSONALITY Chanel Etowar is 19 years old and lives in Curepipe. She is the owner and founder of CDE Construction Ltd. An imposing and motivated young woman, she is one of those who demonstrate a strong life ethic and creative abilities. Dynamic, meticulous and endowed with an acute sense of curiosity, she also displays a good sense of synthesis. Autonomous and well-organized, tell us how not to surrender to her charming character, eh? Her nose for style, Chanel has developed it at a very young age. She started modeling at barely 15 years old. As many young girls who dream of this profession, Chanel found an agency that was recruiting models and this is how she grabbed the opportunity. “ I make the most of it. The best thing you can do for yourself if you want to make a step in fashion is to find a good agency to work with,” she says. For the young woman, fashion is simply about expressing an identity, showing someone who you are through your style picks and using your clothes to say something about you. It’s all about US. “Even people who say they don’t care about what they wear choose outfits each morning that say a lot about them and how they feel,” she points out.

A FASHION BUSINESS IN ALL FORMS Chanel also argues that the best advice in becoming a model is to be aware of what you’re about to face. Girls who may have their necks slit bad agencies that may require huge sacrifices, amidst your morality, integrity or beliefs in order to get some exquisite shots unfortunately. “Be aware that this job can be very tiring. Also know that the idea of modeling is not to make you famous, but rather to create a certain look that photographers and companies are looking for. You may be asked to cut or color your hair, wear an outfit you don’t like, or spend endless hours getting to the right location just for one photo shoot. You can also be on set for 8 to 12 hours or more,” admits Chanel. The ultimate goal is to create THE good picture. Through her experiences, Chanel has observed that many photographers, agencies and product campaigns place the focus of the photo ahead of the model’s needs. Each photo session has had a symbolic meaning for Chanel each and every time because they always require an improved version of herself. She always tries to question herself, and that’s what makes her happy. “A lot of girls who don’t intend to jeopardize their values end up collapsing if they don’t know in advance what their values are. Never compromise yourself to be a model,” argues Chanel. She maintains that the title of model will mainly help her to make girls accept themselves as they are, because people tend to focus on everything that separates us. “I stand up for what I believe in!” ALWAYS AIM HIGHER Chanel was blessed with a family that has always supported her. It is particularly thanks to them that the young woman has today become powerful and committed. Besides fashion, Chanel also manages her business in the construction industry. She also shares her time between cooking, boxing, yoga, dancing and going out. Student at the Curtin University of Mauritius, she plans to graduate in Entrepreneurship and Marketing and is also considering building her own house. “So far, Newstyle magazine has helped me a lot, both in my business, where I have many customers and investors, and in the fashion industry, where many photographers and shops have wanted to work with me. I thank the magazine from the bottom of my heart for all this!”

INTERVIEW WITH PRATYUSH NOBEEN “KEEPING IT SECRET... OR NOT SO MUCH.” Attitude is what makes it all! Charming, smart, creative... He is committed and holds a precious secret! His name is Pratyush Nobeen. Is that name unknown to you? Try to think of it carefully! This emblematic figure of fashion and events is no longer being introduced... We do not intend to keep it a secret here! Come with us for an exclusive interview with Pratyush Nobeen, who has kindly agreed to share some of his time today. A THUNDEROUS JOURNEY Secret models! No, we are talking about models that have been kept in total secrecy! (LOL) In fact, this is an Event Management Company. At its head is Pratyush Nobeen, 36, who lives in Curepipe. Former Graduate of the University Of Mauritius in Computer Science, Pratyush has previously been working as a Software Engineer for 5 years before stepping into Telecommunications and Marketing for 3 years. In 2014, he felt the urge to see new things and a real need for change. He left everything and followed his heart which led him to Events and modeling. “My heart was certainly not into engineering or simply working for someone else. I was already running my own modeling agency since 2011. So I took this small agency and expanded it after many years of struggling to make it an event company,” he explains. Fully aware of the downfall of modeling in Mauritius, he explains that this is the main reason behind his choice of diversification for his company Secret Models Ltd. “Influencers have taken over the Internet, leading to the major fall of modeling worldwide. There was a time when models were models. I am very happy to have had my share of experience in the field of modeling and television for 10 years,” he argues. With more than 50-75 people now working for him, Pratyush has been able to show some insight in getting his agency off the ground. He explains that sometimes, his team even has to recruit more people depending on the kind of show they’re putting on and the size of the gigs. ALWAYS BIGGER, ALWAYS HIGHER Secret Models has recently experienced an outstanding rise in demand. The crew is always trying to get their shows bigger, with unprecedented stages, bigger artists for cheap prices. Indeed, this strategy is the reason why Secret Models is now the most reputable agency with a series of successful events featuring world class artists. Pratyush is also categorical. There is no magic recipe for a successful event. Indeed, an event does not only consist in booking a great DJ and selling tickets. Hard work is the sole element that pays off! “We work much harder than anyone with a 9 to 5 day job. There are risks, sleepless nights, a lot of sweat and tears of blood in our work,” he admits. Nevertheless, innovation, passion and determination 32

ultimately always win out. In addition, knowing how to be attentive to what the public wants is a bonus. “To be honest, it’s a 24-hour job. There is no recipe as such, but I can say that a successful event is definitely a mix of a large number of people, an amazing original installation, a happy audience, a quality sound & a great artist with finesse in musical performance,” he explains. So far, the shows organized by Secret Models have always been highly creative and very different from each other. Nevertheless, Pratyush says that the most interesting performance so far has been the Darkwoods Festival with Vini Vici. Lots of people have been questioning the ability of the young man and his team to organize a psychedelic event in a commercial way due to the extremely underground musical genre. “We were stunned to reach a sold-out capacity of almost 7000 pax in three weeks. Just like the other shows we’ve organized - Mystik Garden, The Orbital Festival, Darkwoods Festival II, etc.” MODEL ONE DAY, MODEL FOR... 10 YEARS. 10 years or more! That’s the number of years spent by the young man in modeling. If modeling for some people consists of walking along a runway, Pratyush has a completely different vision of this field. Flexibility is what makes a model! “I have done commercials for KFC, fashion shows and series. I think versatility is the key to success in any business you want to be in,” he says. His experience of networking and getting exposure is something he claims he enjoyed. “When I was a model, I was practically every month in the press or on billboards. There was no Facebook, so I would get the positive feedback from people by text or phone or people would recognize me in malls and stuff.” But fame was not important to Pratyush. All he wanted was to see how he could use that exposure to change someone’s life or help people. “I’ve managed to do that with gigs that have brought 7,000 people away with smiles, show after show, for four or five years.” ANY UPCOMING PLANS FOR PRATYUSH? Of course! Our businessman has no intention of stopping on such a good path. “We will be hosting our own LIVE streaming videos from the first week of June with our local acts. We’re more than sure it’ll be a great way to entertain you at home, in a new style,” he explains. Additionally, these videos will also be streamed worldwide with other international streaming video partners. This is also a non-profit project where the team will invest in this project to keep the scene alive in these difficult times. “If you would like to support, there will be a link where you can also contribute whilst the video is streamed live. A large part of the donation will also be given to non-profit organizations that help stray dogs and the homeless in Mauritius.”

INTERVIEW WITH

ONEZYA CHUNG YEN MODEL OF THE MONTH

“1, 2, 3…STRIKE A PAUSE!” With the success of top models such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, modeling attracts a lot of media attention. However, behind the catwalks and magazine covers, the daily life of models can sometimes be difficult. Whether it’s the pressure of dieting or strong competition, the pressure is not visible but real. Fortunately, thanks to social media in particular, attitudes are changing and personalities are helping the industry to better protect its interests. We met Onezya Chung Yen, our model of the month, who agreed to share her experiences in this environment on the island. Encounter... Onezya Chung Yen is only 22 years old and is a nail artist for 4 years now. She is a final year student at the University of Mauritius in Marketing Management. Her love for fashion has always been there. She calls herself a “fashionista” and embraces the attention she pays to her look and has total admiration for clothes, shoes and jewelry. “I love everything related to fashion and I am very happy and proud to be a model, to have the chance to take pictures and do fashion shows,” she says. In the past, Onezya used to join fashion shows at school on every single occasion. Later on, she seized the opportunities that were offered to her; fashion shows, professional photo shoots, etc. Today, Onezya points out that modeling have become her passion, but also part of her life. She started working in modeling about 4 years ago. At only 22 years old, her basket is full of amazing experiences thanks to modeling. From acting in video clips, fashion shows for big events and posing for big campaigns and catalogues or being the pioneer of famous brands, Onezya has become an essential face of fashion in Mauritius.

Actually, she still manages to remember her biggest event to date as if it were yesterday. To date, Onezya’s biggest fashion show was the Intercontinental Bridal Show 2019, hosted by Jerry Nayna Events which was a two-day show. The young lady had to wear several traditional wedding outfits from several different religions. Her biggest photoshoots? Those with Ergo Rebel and Body & Soul clothing brands. Getting the title of “Model of the month” by Newstyle magazine will, according to our beauty bring her a nice portfolio as well as some more exposure as a model. Getting opportunities in the fashion realm is what she would like. “I’m the only person in my family to have been involved in the world of fashion. At first they were quite reluctant, but as time went by they started to support my choice to be a model, and today they even encourage me,” she tells us. When she is not busy with fashion shows or photo sessions, Onezya spends her spare time with nail art. She is a nail technician. A passion which has gradually become her job since few years. “I also like to go to the beach and also go hiking in the mountains.” As for her upcoming projects, Onezya has set the goal of completing her university studies in marketing management for her to be able to invest more time in her nail salon. Something which will allow her to do more in-depth courses as for the artistic side of nails.

INTERVIEW WITH

SABRINA LEROY SABRINA SPEAKS ABOUT SPORT, YOGA, COACHING AND ZENITUDE Sabrina is a Zen yoga teacher and health coach who is more than caring towards others and has always known that she was made for physical activity. She accompanies and helps people who want to regain a healthier life through a global and holistic approach to rebalance their diet and their life. Encounter with this emblematic figure who believes that the body and mind don’t go without each other.

BEYOND ELHERS DANLOS SYNDROME French who moved to Mauritius last year, Sabrina is very attached to this tropical island. So much that she got married and adopted a little Mauritian girl. Living with a genetic disease known as the Elhers Danlos syndrome, which affects the quality of the collagen present in 80% of someone’s body, Sabrina found in Yoga a way to manage her pain. She worked a lot on herself and found a proper nutrition to help her fight against this disease. “I started yoga the year after I had my first lower back surgery (fixing two lumbar vertebrate) 18 years ago to relieve my back pain. I started in group classes but this was not adapted enough to my health problems. I practiced alone for a long time with the advice of a yoga teacher, and then after a long work of acceptance, of gaining confidence in myself and my body, I developed my yoga practice until I took training courses and now teach,” she confesses. What she likes most about yoga is that it is a perfect way of getting to know your body, understand and accept it better. Being able to feel good both mentally and physically and really BREATHE. MARATHON ROUTINE Sabrina is one of these successful yoga coaches who can literally transform someone. She points out that seeing the metamorphosed faces of her students every day at the end of the class is what motivates her each day to work. A relaxed face full of gratitude! Her daily routine does not look like a common one. She wakes up at 5 am each morning. No! It is not really to go out to work. “I am a Miracle Morning fan! I love those moments when the day dawns and I can take my time in silence watching the sun rise, this is my daily meditation,” she shares. Then comes the muscular awakening of the body with a few postures, a social network update, emails, a facial yoga and facial care before a light breakfast and then she goes on to private, group and more recently live classes (following the lockdown). “After running this marathon, I can allow myself to have lunch (my main meal) with my

family (at the moment) and I spend a few minutes relaxing in the sun (my energy), then it’s time for creative work, writing programs and content, marketing, “An essential snack before carrying on with yoga classes or coaching, most often from afar. A very light meal, or even no dinner, a time with the family and then a beauty and anti-ageing routine every night before going to bed very early at 8pm where Sabrina takes the time to prepare her classes and answer all messages she receives. Her to-do list is always very well-planned. “It may sound very sad as a routine but I love my days teaching, helping, exchanging with my students, my coaches, my followers,” And then the off days for our yoga coach feature more time with family and friends, sometimes even over a drink! FEELING ALIVE! Beginners in this practice are being treated like any of Coach Sabrina’s students: with kindness. She makes sure to always keep on reminding them to always listen to their body, to distinguish the pain that does well from the pain that hurts. Sabrina also pays a special attention to them to prevent any injury. As a nutrition coach, healthy food is essential to Sabrina’s life! A balanced and personalized diet made of real, seasonal, unprocessed, therefore not industrial food is what makes her diet. She supports organic farming as much as possible. “I don’t advocate any particular diet, only basic food hygiene without abuse. Eating everything in small quantities, also according to one’s food intolerances and choices,” she explains. However, finding some time for her is the only drawback that she faces in teaching yoga. Sabrina has a real thirst for learning…something that is never unfulfilled. “I never have enough time to train even more, to prepare my classes, to read, to study. Hence, I don’t have the time to finish the programs I have in class, to finalize the projects in progress. Hours are missing in a day!” she admits. Through Newstyle magazine, Sabrina looks forward to spread her message, so that everyone can understand the importance of eating healthy, moving, meditating, working on oneself to strengthen one’s immune system - especially this period. To live better and happier is what matters most according to her. “Get to know yourself, accept yourself, love yourself, be aware of what you eat and move to reach your dreams for an energetic happy life!” We wish her happy days ahead!

INTERVIEW WITH

GIANNI TIN GOLDEN CAPTURE STUDIO Gianni Tin is a full-time photographer and videographer. He developed an interest in photography at a very young age, and since then he has been travelling around the world on a cruise line to kick-start his career. According to him, “Photography is about capturing every single moment of life”.

Thank you, Gianni, for accepting our invitation. Please read on... 1. Hi, before talking about photography, I’d like to know more about you. Can you tell us about yourself? Who is the man behind Golden Capture? (Full name, age, location, profession...) The man behind Golden Capture studio is Gianni Tin, 27 years old, full-time photographer and videographer in events and weddings. Since my youngest age, I’ve always been a fan of cameras, borrowing my parents’ camera to take pictures of my dog and everything in the house. (Laugh) 2. How did you decide to pursue a career in photography and set up your own studio? What inspired you? Photography has always fascinated me, which led me to pursue a career in this field. Still today, I am very passionate about photography and I am one of the people who have been lucky enough to have my hobby turned into my work. My goal is to create something incredible with my camera, so I am always learning and developing my skills. Photography is what makes me happy. My choice now is to do something that brings me joy and to share it with those around me, so that they can see my art through my eyes. I want to show people my creativity and my talent. For me, photography is about capturing each and every special moment in life. I enjoy seeing tears of joy on a client’s face when they see the precious moments captured. 3. Can you tell us about the Golden Capture team? The Golden Capture Studio team is a group of freelance photographers who are passionate about what we do, and who work together to achieve our goals of satisfying our clients and capturing the moments of their lives. The services we offer are photography and video graphics for corporate events, weddings, singles and couples photography, and drone services. The key points to know before accepting a new project are what the client wants, what he wants to show to the public if it is a corporate photo or video, what his target is.

4. How did your interest in photography begin? My journey as a photographer began with a friend who is also in photography. When I met him, I immediately asked him to teach me more, and since that day, my goal has been to improve myself and learn everything about photography. I want to show people my perception of photography. My career as a photographer started in 2015 on the Disney cruise line. It was a great experience working and meeting people from all over the world and I was officially the photographer of the OMG Nightclub in 2016 where I work for many local and international Dj bot events. I was also the photographer of the nightclub DejaVu in 2020. In 2018, I was officially the photographer of the Hennessy Park Hotel where I took pictures of important events such as Hennessy Fashion Week, the Backstage Awards ceremony. 5. What are the benefits of being an event photographer? The advantage of being an event photographer is that you get to meet local and international artists; it is a great honor to work for large events and photograph them. 6. What do you expect from your customers for a successful collaboration? My expectations from the clients for a successful collaboration are to let us take care of the photo shoot and trust Golden Capture Studio. They chose us for our talent and style. And they can also guide us on what they want if they have something specific in mind. 7. What advice would you give to photographers who want to make a career in photography? The advice for people who want to make a career in photography is to practice and learn, to always listen to others and apply what they have already learned. Social media is a very important platform for photographers. This is where we showcase our talent and art. And through social media, people can contact us for bookings. 8. Any future plans? My next goal is to book more wedding destinations, where I will be able to do international tours. I have already organized weddings in Rodrigues and Seychelles. As far as events are concerned, I am targeting bigger events and concerts in Mauritius and maybe even abroad. I also intend to go deeper into underwater photography. Who knows what the future might bring?
