ISSUE 46 EDITOR’S NOTE Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa Claus is almost here! We are all lucky for making it through this year, with this life-challenge we all went through with the COVID-19. We could even call it our Christmas gift! Mauritius is known as a paradise destination, and this indeed is the perfect description of our island. As this pandemic is badly hitting the world, we Mauritians are lucky enough to be able to live a normal Christmas, leaving behind our lockdown days. Some of the fashion events have been reported, but designers, stylists, makeup artists, models etc. over the island, did not take the days off and worked on their creativity. In fact, it was a blessing in disguise for some people since emphasis has been more laid on the local talents. Some Newborn talents took off; people had the time to explore their inner gifts. Being one of the witnesses of all those different projects successfully taking off, and the fact that we could support most of them in the fashion industry, was a privilege for Newstyle team.

Sandrina Micha

Editor & Stylist

The lesson to all this is that no matter “What is meant to be will be!”, Newstyle will always support hard work and creativity. On this positive note, we are proud to publish our 46th issue this December with the support and hard work of all our collaborators. Newstyle Team wishes you a Merry Xmas. Cheers! Sandrina Micha Editor & Stylist For any queries regarding the magazine, please do not hesitate to contact us on our Instagram and Facebook page. Newstyle is uniquely suited to bring the world of international fashion closer to Mauritians. With the promotion of local skills through photography, Newstyle leaves no room for money transactions. Our collaboration with make-up artists, fitness enthusiasts, designers or models gives them the opportunity to highlight their work and help them gain further expertise. Our goal is to be at the vanguard of fashion. Each issue of Newstyle focuses on a new face to highlight them.

INTERVIEW WITH

SANDRINA ARNASSALON STYLIST “FOR THE LOVE OF STYLE” Sandrina has come a long way since starting her career in fashion in 2016 and has gone from launching a fashion line to styling some of the biggest names in modelling. The glamour and the magic of it all is so exciting to her. So today, Sandrina is joining us to talk about her path to being a lead stylist and what it is like to design and style wardrobes for a range of different events. Thanks so much to Sandrina for joining us today! My name is Sandrina Arnassalon, known under my stylist name Nuance by Sandrina. It’s been almost 4 years that I have been doing styling for photo shoots; magazines, shops and brides as well as for fashion shows. I enjoy fashion since its constantly changing. However, my signature style is indowestern. I love mixing Indian accessories or clothing into western style. How I do that? the fact that I live in Mauritius, makes it possible, as we tend to dress up both ways. I am not afraid of exploring because I trust my sense of taste and I know it will never be overdone as I know exactly what am doing and the result I want. In one word, I love being unique and not Deja-vu! Working for Newstyle magazine as stylist, for one year, has given me the opportunity to explore not only my indo-western style but a variety of the fashion culture, as different shoots have different requirements, in terms of clothing accessories makeup and hairstyle. For this shoot I wanted to explore colors, and different ways of draping sarees. I was lucky to find collaborators who have unique sarees (cotton sarees) and accessories (Pink elephant) to make my fashion project into a successful one. They both get their product from different part of Indian, which indeed a country where all my inspiration came from. About Cotton Sarees by Farz Women’s World Ltd (also known as cotton sarees) was founded in 2015 with the premium goal to make beautiful Sarees accessible to everyone in Mauritius. We started off small in a small boutique and have expanded to an online retail store and a shop at Hallmark Shopping Centre in Curepipe. At Women’s World, Quality and Accessibility is key which is why each item is carefully handpicked. We have searched extensively and explored the deep parts of India to uncover hidden villages who have perfected the craft of manufacturing authentic Sarees. We are pleased to state that we provide a wide range of choices in Sarees (Banarasi, Kanjeevaram, Designer pieces, Casual, Bridal), Lehengas, Kurtis and Veshtis of various fabrics as well as Jewelry of all category, Intricate traditional themed art crafts and outfit accessories. All of which is of assured Quality, Trending and Affordable. Door delivery services have long been incorporated in our system to facilitate the working population’s shopping necessities and we are one click away on our Facebook page: Cotton Sarees (from Women’s World). 29

INTERVIEW WITH

AURORE TATIANA BEAUHARNAIS MODEL LET THAT ‘FRO’ SPEAK! Having natural hair as a Black woman in the modeling industry can help you stand out, but it also comes with challenges. Many hair stylists for photo shoots and runways aren’t trained to work with different hair textures — a dilemma that Tatiana Beauharnais is all too familiar with. Up until she was 14 years old, Tatiana had always chemically straightened, or relaxed, unable to embrace her hair. But then she decided enough was enough. Follow us for this exclusive interview. “I don’t feel defined by my hair, but it symbolizes me embracing my full self,” Tatiana said. Tatiana Beauharnais lives in Britannia which is a small village found along the south coast of the island. She completed one of her Travel & Tourism courses at the Flymates school and is working today at Allianz. A company based in Ébène. Tatiana started modeling two years back, and it was with a shooting in Mahebourg near the Waterfront with an African Outfit. However, she was more drowned in that industry with the Miss Eco Tourism Mauritius pageant in 2019 where she had the opportunity to meet new people who helped her grow and feel comfortable. “I have always been inspired by the one and only Naomi Campbell. She is a black woman who is able to express herself throughout her photo sessions and her catwalk. She is such a gracious and powerful black woman. She always proves that, even if you can be skinny, you can also be beautiful at the same time,” explains the young model. Newstyle team was so curious about Tatiana’s amazing hair that we felt concerned about knowing where she got it from. She confesses that she inherited this crown

from her mother, something she describes as a gift. “When I was a young girl, it was both my mother and grandmother, who used to take care of my hair. I simply used to wash them and let them curl. As I grew up, mom and grandma explained to me that I needed to nourish them with oil and natural hair cream for them to stay healthy. Gradually, I got used to hair masks, made of avocado, yogurt, and eggs, to keep the shining aspect and the beautiful curls.,” she confesses. However, Tatiana confesses that until her 14 years old, she was not comfortable with having a ‘fro, when all her school friends were having brushing. As she reached her 16, she understood that all she had to do is to love herself the way she is. “We don’t have to look like our friends. Today, I am really comfortable with wearing my fro & curly hair in Mauritius, because it is my identity. I am proud of it!” The new concept of the Newstyle Magazine ‘Origin Africa’ has had such a powerful and appealing impact on many followers. This concept has, for a lot of readers helped many young people in Mauritius to accept their roots and origin. Being approached by Newstyle Magazine has been both an honor and a pleasure for Tatiana as it allowed her to voice her personality out. “I may say that a lot of designers saw the beauty in the mixture. Models are all beautiful even if there are light skin or black skin, they all have that personal touch which will make the difference. Before becoming the person I am today, I faced so much difficulties. And then one day, it happens that you simply find pleasure to accept who you truly are. It brightens your aura and your self confidence,” 51

INTERVIEW WITH

AMBER KORIMDUN MODEL Fitness has given an outlet of what the world would call positive energy. Fitness knowledge and it’s understanding is nothing down here on this earth that compares to the future glorified body with perfect health that is a never-ending process. Just think of your current fitness lifestyle as a rehearsal as you get ready to transition into your future body. Since it is always important to seek advice from people who are at the top of their industry when it comes to getting into the amazing shape of your body, the fitness tips and secrets featured in Amber’s interview will definitely help you reach your goals in your life, Newstyle magazine Interviewed fitness enthusiast and model Amber Korimdun who provided some incredibly helpful advice for toning up and shared part of her life with us.

What Amber likes most about modelling is to be able to live memorable experiences and meet talented people. She got to travel to the Philippines, Egypt and Reunion Island and met hundreds of people who she describes as “incredibly gifted at what they do”. These included photographers, videographers, make-up artists, choreographers, and hairstylists, among others. For Amber, fitness is not a competition with others but rather with herself. Her biggest accomplishment as a result of keeping fit is getting over her eating disorder. Being fit has immensely helped Amber to get rid of the signs and symptoms of bulimia. “I used to have a body image in my mind that I needed to have and would go on strict diets to achieve this. However, with fitness, I gradually realised that I was simply being unrealistic, and the best thing is to eat balanced meals and exercise regularly rather than have drastic changes in one’s diet that can be noxious for the health,” she confesses. Fitness taught Amber not be too harsh on herself, to enjoy my life and have a healthy lifestyle at the same time. Moreover, her biggest accomplishment since she started modelling is being in the Top 21 cut of Miss Eco International last year. Amber participated in two pageants, namely Miss Earth Mauritius 2016 and Miss Eco Mauritius 2019 and won both titles in Mauritius and represented the country in the Philippines in 2016 and in Egypt in 2019. Both experiences were incredible and made her learn more about modelling.
