ISSUE 47 EDITOR’S NOTE Hi Newstylers, Hope you had a wonderful holiday, and apologies for the late post today. We would like to kick off 2021 by saying three things: 1) It is okay to be feeling overwhelmed. Mondays are hard, Januarys are hard, going back to work after a break is hard, a global pandemic is hard. It is okay if you are not feeling your most sparkly and energetic! 2) Take this New year as being a real blessing. 2021 will be YOUR year.

3) And the big question: What would you like to discuss together this year? Do you have any big or small questions for us to tackle? What is on your mind? Please share below, and we will get on it (or consult experts!). More posts coming up on our social media and sending so much love your way. xoxo Sandrina Micha Editor & Stylist

INTERVIEW WITH ADAM OMAR BACKSTAGE AWARDS 2020 MALE MODEL OF THE YEAR We had the pleasure of interviewing fabulous male model Adam Omar Wachill. Adam talks about his most memorable photo shoots and the pros of modelling in this new exclusive interview. Enjoy the interview if not for anything else to see why Adam will continue to dominate the male model scene. Thank you so much for doing this with us! Adam Omar Wachill is 23 years old and lives in Port Louis. He recently graduated from Curtin University in Bachelor of Commerce, more precisely in Banking and Finance. Adam has been approached by people in the industry while going to certain types of events. Also, during his University years, friends who had business clothing lines came up to him to be the model of their new merchandise. Adam went with the flow and it eventually turned out into a profession which he found out being a fit for him. Each different modelling shoot brings different concepts. Hence, the new vibes keep it entertaining for Adam. The brands he has been working with till now have been very supportive and have provided him with remarkable shoot locations. Having to travel to beautiful locations for work is something Adam is thankful for. “I find the challenge of adapting myself to these new
concepts fulfilling for me. Also, I really appreciate networking with highly talented people in the industry – some of whom are now in my close circle,” he confesses. Modelling brings about intricate experiences that often go unnoticed as they happen behind the scenes – such as interacting with different cultures and working with diverse personalities in team. All of this makes modelling truly unique, opening windows of a world that fascinates the young man and which he feels lucky to be part of. Adam finds fulfilment in every sort of work he undertakes in modelling. It gives him satisfaction in being able to provide value to the brands who have associated themselves with him. Most recently, being bestowed the title ‘’Male Model of The Year 2020’’ for the Backstage Awards feels to him like all his time and effort invested into the modelling profession have been recognized and gratified. “It felt unreal. I am deeply grateful to all those who have believed in me and found me deserving of this prestigious title. Through my social media, I have thoroughly expressed my gratitude to the people who have supported me and made this possible for me. Surely it feels highly rewarding to all the time and effort I put in. I have forsaken multiple work offers and projects to really commit myself to give my best in modelling.” He relates.
37
The young man admits living life on the go. Each day brings something different. He surely plans his tasks for the upcoming days but always gets phone calls and emails that decide his day. His daily routine would consist mainly of eating healthy, early morning exercises and intense evening work outs. Some daily schedules that are unpredictable. Adam describes this modelling world as hectic. A world where one has to be very spontaneous. “We often have to show up for shoots at odd hours- before dawn, after dusk. Also, we need to need fully presentmentally specifically. We need to use our energy wisely as we need to constantly be on our best possible form. There are body types expectations to maintain and that can get exhausting. I get very little rest, considering I have my personal affairs to manage alongside,” says Adam. Thankfully, Adam’s family has been very supportive till 38
now. They often attend the shows he features in. Having the presence of one’s family during such events is very meaningful for him. “Newstyle Magazine is about something I instinctively stand for – Style! Style confers to one’s personality. It’s an alternative means to express oneself. As such, having a magazine dedicated to style and spreading the diverse style senses we have on the island is already helping the youth specially to find a style they match with. Finding a style is finding an identity, and that is one important thing that the youth strives for. Sometimes, you must go for it. Take the risks,” After all, what is life without challenges?

NATACHA LAFLEUR
BACKSTAGE AWARDS 2020 MAKEUP ARTIST OF THE YEAR
-
Natacha Lafleur aged 33 is a resident of Saint Pierre. Mother of two children, she has been a professional make-up artist, working as a freelance artist for four years. Since October 2019, she joined Says Academy as a make-up coach. She accepted to meet Newstyle for an exclusive interview in this edition. Encounter... Natacha has not always been a professional make-up artist. As a young mother, she had to work to support her small family. She started to work as a salesperson in shops. As for makeup, this has always fascinated her, but she never thought she would one day put her talents to the service of others. Even back then, when she was a saleswoman, she used to put on her makeup to go to work and her customers always complimented her on the way she was doing it. The trigger came 10 years ago when Natacha met Cedric Lanappe, professional make-up artist. At that time, Cedric Lanappe was giving a make-up demonstration for a product brand in a public place and she had the immense honor of having him doing her make up. “Curious about these techniques and the products he used, I bombarded him with a whole lot of questions.” She says. Since that day, Natacha’s passion and curiosity for make-up has grown even more. Social media has allowed her to be seen by other great names in the realm, namely Hans Dax. Hans Dax has noticed her work on social media through publications and she had afterwards come and assist him during a make-up session for a beauty contest. “It was on this day that I discov-
ered the fashion world and discovered a Natacha who blended easily into this setting,” she relates. Natacha wanted more and more to put her creativity and artistic side forward. She learned through videos, from Hans Dax’s advice, the techniques and how to play with color shades. That is how she came to want to create make ups for people to help them highlight the most beautiful traits of their faces and boost their self-confidence. Being nominated “Best professional makeup artist” at the Backstage awards was a great surprise for Natacha. It is the fruit of her hard work. To go beyond her efforts as for her passion for make-up, without wanting to be better than the other great names in this field is what she wants the more. Today this nomination makes is a real pride for her and it encourages her to go even further, to learn even more in the make-up industry because it is an industry which is in constant evolution due to new techniques and new products. “I think that featuring in Newstyle Magazine will allow me to make myself better known and it will allow me to project myself even more in the world of make-up. This is a strong message that I want to share with young people, especially women,” she points out. To always believe in our dreams and above all to give yourself the means to reach them is something Natacha values. And all this is done through good will, hard work and resilience. “We all have a talent, some knowledge. We simply need to take the time to discover it and follow our instincts while remaining rational and humble. Humility has always been my motorbike and it still is today even after this nomination,”. 55

INTERVIEW WITH
ESHA LUCHOOMUN
BACKSTAGE AWARDS 2020 - FEMALE MODEL OF THE YEAR
Esha Luchoomun is a face that we no longer introduce. Beautiful, elegant, and ambitious, she can make more than one head spin. Meeting with this model who stands up for herself above all...
Esha Luchoomun is still pursuing her studies. Motivated and dynamic, she likes to challenge herself. Extremely independent for her young age, she switches between her studies and modelling. She started in this field while she was approached by an agency. Once established, nothing can stop her. This field gave Esha the opportunity to meet extraordinary people who share the same passion for fashion. It also gave her more self-confidence. For the beautiful woman, appearing on a display board was such an accomplishment. The greatest accomplishment for her. “Seeing myself everywhere and seeing that people recognise and congratulate me as well is such an incredible feeling,” says the young woman.
A typical day for Esha is a school day. She gives herself all the means to succeed in life and build a career. A vision of her life that she does not lose sight of. Most recently, our beautiful woman was nominated “Best Female Model” by the Hennessy Park Hotel for the Backstage Awards. A very unexpected moment for the young woman. “I was quite surprised but also pretty thrilled because it showed that my work was recognised by others, my efforts and everything else,” she says. However, she admits that she was quite reluctant to do so. She maintains that this is a moment that a lot of people do not enjoy. “Some people will have the impression that you are a competitor. I don’t like this state of mind, I think everyone can be in the same light and we can share the spot, we are colleagues and not enemies,” Esha says.

To stay in shape, Esha confesses her little secrets to us. For her, there is no question of giving in to drastic diets. Lucky her! With a fast metabolism, she can afford to eat thousands of calories without it hurting her. Nevertheless, she does stretch and yoga to be more flexible, which can help improve her posture. Amidst a family that encourages her to always aim higher, Esha considers herself blessed to have the support of her family. “I know they believe in me and in my progress,” she says. In addition to her family support, Esha also relies heavily on the support of Newstyle magazine. “They have already done a lot for me because they have supported me for a long time, and I will always be grateful to them. It is the local magazine that promotes young talent and gives opportunities to new people. I encourage people who want to enter the field to not hesitate. “

So, they took me as model for a test. i started developing an interest after looking at the result. My mum then gifted me a camera a week later. I immediately asked my two friends to teach me more, and since that day my goal has been to improve myself and learn everything about photography. i started to practice by myself and posting on Facebook to get reviews. This is where i started to collaborate with two photographers (Vidour Numkoo and Luvish Chenadoo) whom I learned a lot from them. I followed a course in Uk at Nikon school in Oxford. Back to Mauritius, i created and started a new company. My career as photographer started in 2013 at Radisson Blu Resort and Spa Mauritius & Pharmacie Nouvelle Ltd. 8. What advice would you give to photographers who want to make a career in photography? Before doing anything, you should have an idea of what success should look like for you. Defining your own idea of success will help you in setting appropriate goals and identifying the steps for working towards achieving them. Remember the word success is relative: it means different things to different people. For instance, your brand of success may come in the form of being a career photographer, or it might mean simply earning some extra money working part-time while keeping your daytime job. Set realistic goals. Before venturing into this field, you must thoroughly understand the overall goal of what you want to achieve. Irrespective of what you want to achieve in the long term, small and short terms goals are very important. Since they are easier to achieve, they will keep you inspired and motivated because achieving them quickly means you can move to the next project. Chaining those small projects together will eventually take you to your larger goal. But if you do not work toward smaller projects first, you might get discouraged and leave the job. While freedom of creative expression is very important irrespective of the career that you have chosen, being informed about the current trends in your field is also very important in photography. This does not mean that you will not be true to yourself and your art. In fact, you can choose which of the trends to incorporate into your art, there are no drawbacks to staying
informed about the current trends in your art. 9. What do you think of social media? how can our reader follow you? Social Media plays a very important role in today’s life, social Media are web-based online tools that enable people discover and learn new information, share ideas, interact with new people and organizations. It has changed the way people live their life today, it has made communication much easier. It allows the exchange of user-generated content like data, pictures, and videos. So, readers can follow me on Atish Jory on both Instagram and Facebook where I post all my photography and adventure time. 10. What is next for you? My next goal is targeting bigger events and concerts in Mauritius and maybe even abroad. Who knows what the future might bring? Also, my fashion studio. 11. What are your expectation from a client for a successful collaboration? Being upfront from the very beginning is key to managing client expectations. Set out your rules of play before you take on any work and agree on your process together. If you cannot guarantee something, be clear about it – it is always better to under promise and overdeliver! Remember that many clients do not actually know much about the creative process at all, so take this chance to be clear about what you can and cannot. 85
