SPRING MOOD 2021 LOVE IS LOVE NEWSTYLE BRIDES BACKSTAGE GLAMOUR LOVE FOR GOLF

ISSUE 48 EDITOR’S NOTE Ah, February! The month when human thoughts turn out to lust and/or love, and insectile nervous systems turn to whatever their particular mating and/or life-cycle entails. In this issue, you will find tales of love and loss.

Sandrina Micha

Editor & Stylist

Valentine’s Day, as dictated by various card companies, candy-makers, jewelers, and florists, is a holiday to celebrate one’s ability to purchase the affection of one’s object of desire, and/or one’s willingness to be purchased. Depending on the traditions you hold dear to your heart, it may also be the holiday to celebrate saints’ heads being distanced from their bodies. In the midst of college, it is sometimes difficult to imagine marrying someone. This month, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we interviewed few couples who happily accepted to share their journey with us. Valentine’s Day is not necessarily all about love between couples. Love comes in all different forms, whether that love is between friends, lovers, significant others or siblings. Love is love. These couples all have their own unique story. No matter where this Valentine’s Day takes you, I hope it is filled with love. Happy Valentine’s Day. Sandrina Micha Editor & Stylist

Chinese New Year Exclusive Styling By CHD & Fabien Fauzou

Cédric Vincent, also known as Call Him Dude, is a fashion designer who has recently teamed up with Fabien Fauzou to create some one-off designs. Both are creative fashion designers with different aspirations. However, since last year, they decided to work together, which resulted in a well-mixed style. Their first project was Bloxxom, a fashion show they presented at the Hennessey Park Hotel. Fabien is more focused on the Glamour and Wedding style, while CHD (Call Him Dude) is more edgy. They called 2020 an “epic year” as they worked together on three shows and other amazing fashion projects. Knowing that they can create

wonders together, they decided to explore more ways and finally be internationalized. The creative team explained to us that their path is not easy, even if they are overloaded with talent. “There is not much recognition of our art in Mauritius, despite the massive investment in our work”. Some professionals in the fashion industry have taken them for granted and used their creative ideas for their own benefit. However, on a positive note, they stated that this year, they will be doing things for themselves, and be the change they want to see in the world, instead of letting people walk all over them.

11

The golden faux leather kimono from the Circus of Anarchy fashion show was a big source of inspiration for the Chinese shoot. The team decided to make it a Chinese-inspired photo shoot. “Fabien and I both have Chinese roots, so it was interesting to research and work on this project,” states Cedric. They have been using unconventional materials, for example, transparent blue plastic to create a Kimono. “Our vision was to be modern while remaining in a traditional setting and to be represented by mixed models to show the diversity of Mauritius.”

The experience of Nuance by Sandrina project with CHD and Fabien Fauzou Call Him Dude and Nuance by Sandrina [Sandrina Arnassalon] has always been a team since long now. While they were discussing life on the phone, they spontaneously shared their

12

ideas about the concept of Chinese New Year. “Working with him made me realize the importance Fashion has for me. Cedric then explained to me that this year would be more focused on yellow, green and blue, rather than the traditional red,” shares Sandrina. CHD’s creations, alongside Fabien Fauzou, aim at being inspired by dragons, modern China while also adding a touch of glamour. Sandrina then suggested that the make-up should be more traditional and warlike, using some of the colors they had in mind: blue, yellow/gold, green for the female models. “For the male models, I decided that we needed a clean makeup with the Chinese warrior eyebrow to highlight the Chinese look. The only makeup artist that came to mind was Akshay Gottea, because he always understands what I have in mind and turns it into a masterpiece”.

Another cruise once the borders reopen and we are allowed to do so. We plan to go skiing and discover New Zealand in a caravan. GOLF INTERVIEW

PERCY PHILIPS

Percy Philips began playing sports out of love at an early age and became more serious about it as the years went by. Golf is a sport he has been enjoying especially since visiting Australia. In this exclusive interview, he tells us a little more about his journey. Follow us... Percy Philips, 61 years old is the father of two married daughters and a grandson. Head of the Retail Banking Division of the SBM Bank Mauritius after more than 40 years, he has a quite long career in sports. Percy started International competitions in athletics with high jump, triple jump and 110mts hurdles. As he started to practice at a very young age, he received the title of “Junior National champion” in these fields. “I competed in the first Indian Ocean Island games and consecutively two others in the National Basket team. I have also been nominated President of the Mauritius Basketball Federation, Vice President/Treasurer of the Mauritius National Olympic Committee and I Headed various delegations in International games among which Head of Mission of the National delegation for the 2000 Commonwealth games in Manchester, UK,” He relates. A well-filled basket featuring well-being, motivation, and love as its main ingredients. Out of practising, Percy shares with us his love of watching boxing, Formula 1 and golf on TV.

103

In 2002, Percy pays a visit to his family in Melbourne Australia. His brother-in-law, Strawbes brought him to a driving range. He got his first opportunity to touch a golf club. After a few drives, the passion took birth. However, as he got back to Mauritius, the costs of practising Golf chilled him down. “My brother-in-law passed away from an illness in 2017 and his last wish was me to own his golf bag. A long story pushing me to keep only the best souvenirs. The woods are real old ones, and the bag features the American flag,” he says. 2017. Percy got the unexpected opportunity to replace one staff in a team following golf training at Tamarina golf hotel with the reputed trainer, Sylvia, and her team. They had full Saturday early morning initiating sessions, and Percy never missed one of them. After a few weeks Percy was madly hitting hundreds of balls on the Driving Range and the great man heard Sylvia saying that “a star was born”. Real motivating words. After this initiation Percy had to find the equipment to continue playing, and he bought different irons and woods at second-hand price. “Golf is part of my life now and it is such a great game. Mauritius has got the most fabulous open-air courses, where you can meet so many people. I think golf is the only game where your competitors would give you tips on your swing or the position of your feet during the game. They will help you find your ball in the bushes or the lake, encourage or congratulate you on a good shot. I never found that in other games,” he proudly confesses. 104

105

106

107

Percy encourages his family including his grandson to practice. He relates that they love the game even if timing is an issue for some of them. A lot of practice to avoid labouring the fairway is needed. “I really find it great that Newstyle is interested by my passion. I would like to thank you to allow me to express my passion. Who knows? There might be an annual Newstyle Golf which will open!”
