UNITY IN DIVERSITY MODEL OF THE MONTH GLORIA JHUEL BRIDES : ALL IN BEAUTY WITH NUSHRA NIAMUT THE SUBSTANCE OF IDEAS: ALLAN KARTEL GRAND & DRAMATIC SHOW

ISSUE 49 EDITOR’S NOTE One of the advantages of living in a multicultural country is that you can find beautiful people from different origins. This enables stylists, make-up artists, stylists, photographers, etc. to mix cultural fashion and style. It will always make sense in a fashion scenario since everyone is used to seeing people getting dressed in multiple traditional outfits. In addition, they have the opportunity to explore without too much trouble all the outfits, make-up, religious/traditional accessories. This is what makes fashion very interesting in Mauritius.

Sandrina Micha

Editor & Stylist

The only drawback is that most of the Mauritian female models are considered as “small”. This is what makes them popular in the fashion arena. According to an international site, the minimum size of a runway model is 1m75 with NO heels! Nevertheless, this should not curb the creative spirit or perceptions; designers, make-up artists, stylists, photographers work according to what the country has to offer. The fashion industry in Mauritius has grown to adapt and use all the different attributes of the models. Newstyle Magazine is in fact a fashion magazine, which focuses on all these different types of beauty, in collaboration with other fashion minds to make each issue a real success. Sandrina Micha Editor & Stylist

For any queries regarding the magazine, please do not hesitate to contact us on our Instagram and Facebook page. Newstyle is uniquely suited to bring the world of international fashion closer to Mauritians. With the promotion of local skills through photography, Newstyle leaves no room for money transactions. Our collaboration with make-up artists, fitness enthusiasts, designers or models gives them the opportunity to highlight their work and help them gain further expertise. Our goal is to be at the vanguard of fashion. Each issue of Newstyle focuses on a new face to highlight them.

TÊTE-À-TÊTE:

SIDDIQUAH RUJAK Make-Up Artist

We seem to live in a culture that appreciates diversity, which is wonderful. There have been times in the past when cultures do not appreciate diversity, and this ends up leading to tragedy. There are many reasons why homogeny within a culture is detrimental to society, but there are even more reasons why diversity only enriches society. Can a community be liveable, but not healthy in the diversity of experience? Vibrant, without connection? Thriving, but isolated from difference? In a word, “no.” We know these characteristics are as interwoven as the people who inhabit our towns and cities, rural areas and villages. This is what Siddiquah Rujak wanted to feature in her latest Make-up shoot. Ethnic background, different skin tones, Ancestry, Identity, this is her way of Celebrating today. Newstyle invites you to discover these amazing shots, as we are all celebrating the 53rd anniversary of the Independence...

MODEL OF THE MONTH

GLORIA JHUEL

Gloria launched her career as a model at the age of 16 and officially signed on as an adult afterwards. She has been involved in various fashion and cosmetic campaigns throughout her career. In order to learn more about her modeling career, her lifestyle and her future plans, we spoke to Gloria Jhuel who answered all our questions in a very friendly manner. Enjoy the interview! Gloria Jhuel is barely 23 years old, and is a cruise ship entertainer and model. She is a young woman from Vacoas and a real fashion enthusiast. Since her early childhood, she has been developing a genuine love affair with fashion. A world that has allowed her to express herself and explore her talents as a model. “My mother is a great dressmaker who has always been there to support me, especially if I had the designs I wanted. She is the one who inspired me primarily,” she explains. Gloria recalls her first steps in this folklore world as if it was yesterday. She started doing fashion shows with the makeup artist Hans Dax and after a call from one of her friends who wanted her to do photos for his store. “I had some doubts about myself, but I still wanted to start a new adventure. From then on, I made a lot of interesting pictures.” At the age of 16, Gloria started in the harem with make-up sessions. An experience that stimulated her to move forward and also helped her gain confidence.

While many questions could arise on how to manage private and professional life, Gloria says that she always finds the time and the means to do what she loves. “When you do what you really love, nothing is difficult,” says Gloria. It’s also a matter of good will”. But is it easy to be a model in Mauritius nowadays? It may or may not be according to Gloria. For her, there is a lot of competition between individuals and some are not ready enough to respect other people’s opinions on fashion. Any trouble? She hasn’t had many. She has never been afraid of anyone’s opinion in the fashion world and has a lot of friends in the fashion world who really support her. Luckily, the young woman is very blessed to have her family’s support in this endeavor. Besides modeling, Gloria is a serious soul adventurer. She has juggled traveling, discovering new places and, hold on tight, singing! For her, modeling will always be a good experience. She encourages young girls to go into modeling while keeping a firm grip on their shoulders: it can be easy or not. All you need is patience and dedication. For her, it’s a good way to share her inspirations with others and to learn more. “A model is above all a multi-faceted character because photos reveal many facets of the same personality,” she says. She is still amazed at how a photo can describe a multitude of feelings. According to Gloria, each person sees a different aspect and it shows how people see and feel things differently. Motivated, ambitious, Gloria wants more than anything to have her own clothing brand and always wants to discover other places in the world that will help her learn more about fashion. “I just want to make my family proud of me. I want to work more in the fashion industry and surely with more major brands. I also want to promote our culture and why not be an international role model.” 45

Brides : All In Beauty

Nushra Niamut

Nushra Niamut is a 23-year-old woman who is an entrepreneur of beauty. Passionate about make-up, she became a professional make-up artist and began her career 6 years later. Some years later, she convinced a number of her customers. We took the opportunity to discover a little more about this pro. Follow us...

66

A very down-to-earth person. This is how Nushra Niamut describes herself. Out of love for what she does on a daily basis, she wakes up every day with the excitement of achieving her goals. Nushra simply follows in her mother’s footsteps. Thus, she has been setting everything from the age of 17 and what she has sown is growing day by day. All this is not perceived as work for her. It is her passion and what she loves to do. “I wake up in the morning with the possibility to achieve my objective. I stay focused and work hard to get good results. I prefer to focus on the positive things rather than on the action afterwards,” she says. Her reference in terms of look? Rihanna, because for Nushra, she always looks fabulous with her makeup and it gives her a different look. Thus, she maintains that we all have basic artistic skills, but being a dynamic personality is an artist’s strong point. In addition, she always makes sure to cultivate a good relationship with her clients, which also leads to good communication skills. “I keep up to date by following the top beauty brand on social media to see what’s emerging, what’s new and what’s being phased out.” She has had some challenges. But Nushra always makes sure to turn them into strength. “When I began,” she says. Eyeliner was my weakness... While doing make-up for a customer, the pencil was never equal. So, I opted for make-up without eyeliner to make things easier,” she says. She managed a dozen models for a fashion show with many issues in addition to make-up and hairstyle. Knowing how to keep her composure, she still managed to pull her head out of the water.

In order to properly meet her clients’ expectations, Nushra always asks them the make-up and hairstyle they have chosen in order to get an idea of what they really want to have. But it is not always the make-up given to people as everyone has a different face and skin shape and also for hair style. “Not every customer’s hair has the same texture and color. So, it’s better to ask again and if they don’t like the make-up and the hairstyle, we explain the problem to them and we do it again until they are satisfied” shares Nushra. Thanks to her professionalism, the young lady was able to be part of an international project with a foreign artist, something she has always wanted to do. Among many other successes, her first fashion show took place at the Sofitel Hotel as a hairdresser, which was a great event for her. Also, a fashion show at Sunset karma, MBA awards ceremony, at the Maritim Hotel as well as many other fashion shows at the Hennessy Park Hotel. Most significantly? March 5th! A fashion show organized by Shameer Abdul Raman who will represent their hard work at the Hennessy Park Hotel. Nushra Niamut says she has always dreamed of being a Boss Lady. To build her own empire. As a result, she is working hard to achieve what I have planned. For her, Newstyle is a well-known magazine that many people follow. “After this interview, I’m sure I have a lot of viewers and followers on my social media, because ALL WE HAVE IS NOW”.

THE SUBSTANCE OF IDEAS AN INTERVIEW WITH ALLAN KARTEL PHOTOGRAPHER - VIDEOGRAPHER

Allan Kartel captures an almost unimaginable world and is almost a legend in the realm of photography on the island. For the past years, Allan has extensively photographed the fascinating existence of people living in Mauritius and elsewhere. Self-taught, he oscillates between photography and videography, exploring a deeper, stranger, and darker side of emotions. In the following interview, Allan discusses the strange world he captures with his camera, the importance of substance in ideas, and his new photographic series. 94

Allan Kartel is 28 years old and is Franco-Mauritian. Born and raised in France, his parents are Mauritian. Since his childhood he has been coming to Mauritius on vacation. He now lives in Flicen-Flac since his arrival in Mauritius 4 years ago. At the age of 17, Allan gave up his studies to work and started his passion which is photography and videography. Today, he is a freelance photographer and self-taught video director, this since 2009. His love for photography Allan discovered it during his vacations in Mauritius in 2009 when he first used an SLR camera to shoot. Videography then came naturally to him, as he had many fellow artists in France who needed video clips. As he was already working on the photographic visuals, he decided to try videography, which he liked right away. “I don’t have a photo studio; I mainly do outdoor photography. What inspires me is music. Be it in photo or video. I work mainly alone but my wife assists me on almost all photo shoots and filming. I met a drone pilot “Dirk FPV” who is the first member of my film crew,” he tells us. Fashion, wedding, events, corporate, commercial etc. photo shoots. And in terms of video, music videos, corporate, events, commercial, weddings, such are the services offered by the young man to his clients. Thus, before accepting any project with them, Allan makes sure that there is a good feeling and a concrete and mutual agreement on the project to be realized with the customer or the person to collaborate with. Allan always tries his best to gain their trust because it may otherwise be difficult to work in good circumstances. The goal is also to have fun above all during this collaboration. As far as video is concerned, Al-

lan works with the same principles. The feeling is what makes it all happen. He tries as much as possible to enter the world of the artist, in his head to know what he really wants, what he feels. The most important thing is of course the music. “It’s the music that will guide my inspiration for the script and the scenes in the video,” he says. We wanted to know his greatest accomplishment so far. He is categorical! For him, it’s about coming to live in another country, leaving everything behind to start a new life with his wife, and achieving the goals he set for himself. “The advantage of being a photographer is the encounters we have made, the places, the settings in which we have the chance to work,” Allan shares. As a winner of the Best Video of the Year award at the MMA on December 12, 2020, Allan argues that one should persevere, not give up, invest time and sometimes money. In addition, one must know how to take risks, give the means to see a maximum of things. “At the beginning we must accept projects that we don’t necessarily like, so that one day we can only accept projects that we like. If the passion is there, the work and the precision will have to follow,” he says. What do we expect from him? Several video and photo projects to come. And some surprises of course.

MOHAMMAD SHAMEER ABDUL RAMAN

Grand and Dramatic show by Shameer Abdul Raman

A professional. This is how we can describe Shameer Abdul Raman. In addition to modelling, he creates fashion show choreographies for models in beauty contests. Encounter with this powerful Mauritian figure...

114

GRAND AND DRAMATIC FASHION SHOW HELD ON MARCH 5, 2020 AT HENNESSY PARK HOTEL His fashion show was about being huge and outstanding because his goal is never to create a small fashion that looks like what is already being done. To stand out, to excel himself, and to motivate himself...this is his way of living. Shameer Abdul Raman has been working on this fashion show for 6 months to avoid any rush in his work and to be at his best. The main goal of “ Grand and Dramatic” fashion show was to gather all the professionals under one roof. “It’s like a celebration of fashion. I wanted to show my gratitude to all the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with recently,” he explains. Therefore, Shameer chose this theme “Grand and dramatic” based on his personality, since everyone who knows him recognizes that he likes drama and enjoys making things big, whether it is the way he dresses or his emotions. His inspiration emerged when he saw that the level of fashion shows be-

ing down in Mauritius. He thus wanted to raise the bar in this sector. Having been in the industry for almost 32 years, Shameer felt the need to do something to make it better. His team, #shameerteam100, consists of 100 people who are involved in this event. “ This was our show, not just mine. Everybody has been showing their creations, from the stylist to the make-up artist, from the hairdresser to the tattooist, from the accessories designer to the photographer, the videographer, etc.” he says. As for his future projects, he cannot say as much yet, but the work has already begun. It’s all about planning. “ Appearing in Newstyle magazine, will introduce this event to readers who will know what the show was all about. My message to my readers is: do not let the world pull you down, go out and get it, because nothing is impossible in life as long as life is there! Live it to the fullest.”
