ISSUE 51 EDITOR’S NOTE If ever there was ever a time to pause and celebrate the greatness of motherhood it is now. Although it only comes around once every year, Mother’s Day should truly be an everyday event. After all, a mother’s work is never done. The amazing and wondrous thing about motherhood is that mothers come in so many different packages. We are all well aware of the existence of the traditional birth mother; however, there are also those mother figures who fulfill maternal roles as well such as: adoptive mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, step-mother and yes even at times, father. We acknowledge and applaud these individuals for their contribution to society and to mankind as a whole. Motherhood is no easy task; it takes a whole lot of love, strength and determination to nurture a child. Sandrina Micha

Editor & Stylist

We celebrate the spirit of motherhood! We rejoice in the power that Universe has blessed women with to give the gift of life. We should all give thanks to the beautiful women and individuals in our lives that have nurtured and cared for us. And if you are a mom/caregiver, then give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Love to all moms, Sandrina Micha Editor & Stylist

LIKE MOTHER LIKE DAUGHTER MEET THIS MAJESTIC DUO (ORIGIN AFRICA) As the age-old saying goes, “Like mother, like daughter” and, in the case of Emily and Emaïa, nothing could be truer. Amazing hair flowing behind them, gorgeous eyes and eye-catching smile. it’s impossible not to notice the physical similarities between them, making them seem more like sisters than anything else. Follow us… 1. Hello Emily! Can you please introduce yourself? My name is Emilie Bauluck, I am 30 years old and I live in Tamarin. I work as a model, fashion show coach, make-up artist and mother. 2. Please tell us about your journey & career? I first entered the fashion industry by competing in the Elite Model Look contest, after winning first place. I then went on to win the Miss Earth Air Mauritius pageant. Winning “The Star of the Catwalk”, something that marked my career, which allowed more people to recognize me. 3. Who are your role models? Michelle Obama has always inspired me to be an impeccable boss and mother, even under the spotlight. Beyonce’s fieriness has always motivated me to do well. She proves that a woman can choose to be a charismatic artist and mother simultaneously at her age.

ed me greatly along the way. Her narrative of obstacles and lessons really gave me the strength I have today. 5. What’s your most memorable experience as an entrepreneur [if so]? After getting certified as a makeup artist, I had to do a bridal makeup as my first service. I was nervous and excited on the day, but I did a great job. My first customer was extremely satisfied, which left me feeling very proud. That moment marked my success, which is very special to me. 6. What were the challenges you faced as a working mom? I am grateful to my parents that I did not have trouble working as a mother. My father took care of my daughter throughout her first year. And because my mother also helped me, I realized how much the support of a family really contributes to a person’s success. 7. Would you like to give any tips to other working moms to be successful? I would say that you should always believe in yourself and that learning is a lifelong process. Having a child is actually a source of motivation to do better every day. I owe this little human being for giving me such motivation.

4. Did you read any books that inspired or motivated you in your journey? Rupi Kaur’s “Milk and Honey” has motivat9

8. Are you using any online marketing strategies for your work? How are you using different social media channels to market your work? I always keep in touch with my audience. It is important for me to regularly update my Facebook and Instagram. These are the main social media platforms in my opinion. 9. What’s your greatest fear as an entrepreneur [if so]? Our current situation in this pandemic is what I feared the most. The fashion and entertainment industry has really slowed down with this virus. Even the institutions are supposed to be closed, so my job as a fashion show coach is not favorable at the moment either. 10. What’s the biggest factor that has helped you be successful? What has helped me is to always be present in the fashion sphere. Mixing with people and being down to earth has always allowed me to make new personal and professional connections. 11. What are your success habits? I believe in making a good first impression, so I take care of my image. Presentation counts, even more in the fashion industry.

10

12. What do you enjoy most about what you do? Performance is my life. I love being on the catwalk or behind the camera with attitude and power. 13. What keeps you going when things get tough? I remind myself that there is always tomorrow. I can rest and try again until I succeed. 14. How can people connect with you? STORY OF A SUPER MAMA

& COMPANY DIRECTOR (SME) Today we are pleased to sit down with well-known female painting guru Jenna D’Hotman de Villiers. She is not only a business woman, she’s also a super mama! So, naturally, we asked Jenna about how gender has impacted her career. Hi Jenna! We are honored to have you here. Could you introduce yourself? I am Jenna D’Hotman de Villiers, 34 years old, I come from a family of 4 children, I am the 3rd and I am indeed the most “boring” haha! I am very teasing, I must admit. Everything makes me laugh and everything is a laughing matter. I am Mauritian, I live in Tamarin, I have 2 children (Jade - 8 years old and Nao- 5 years old) I am engaged and will soon be officially a stepmother of 2 other children. I love animals, 4 dogs, 2 rabbits, 10 hens, 2 pigs! It’s a farm at home. My partner is overwhelmed! LOL! I am a Co-Director of a family company where I have been working for 15 years now. Tell us about your background? I went to a French school in Moka. At the end of my education, I left my dream of becoming a restaurant chef to help my dad with the paperwork at his office, and 15 years later I’m still there. Between the building sites and the office, the days go by at 200 miles an hour! We are painters, so we are in the construction business, not really a woman’s field, but hey, we’ll break the codes eventually!

30

Who are your models? My role models for me are my parents, they have always been there for us and still are today. They knew how to give us a united family despite the difficulties, the ups and downs. I would not change for anything in the world the childhood they gave to my brother, my sisters and me. For that, against all odds, I will never thank them enough. Did you read any books that inspired or motivated you in your journey? For books, I am very much into “ true stories “, people’s lives inspire me much more than a “ thinking guide “ or others... for my part, people’s lives really put things back in place. As far as awareness is concerned, there is nothing better! One of the books I’m still re-reading (for the 3rd time): The color of Feelings. And I still cry just as much! What’s your most memorable experience as an entrepreneur? My most memorable experience as an entrepreneur was when I delivered my first website. There are always ups and downs in a project but there is always the satisfaction of a job well done at the end. The meetings, the contact with new people, people from completely different backgrounds who are there to accomplish the same project, I find it great.

What were the challenges you faced as a working mom? The challenges I had to face as a working lady were always leaving my children behind when they were babies especially, or not being there for their first words, first steps if any, their daily hurts. Just the thought that I couldn’t offer them my arms when they had a little grief during the day upsets me. But I know that I am working to bring them a better future. And that motivates me for my day. Would you like to give any tips to other working moms to be successful? I would advise all working moms not to forget who they are and where they come from! For the sake of their stability. Yes, you can be a mum and put on your high heels and go to work, yes you can be a mum and put on your helmet and wellies and climb your 20m high scaffold. Keep your self-confidence up by telling yourself that there is no such thing as a stupid job and that what you do, you do for a reason! Are you using any online marketing strategies for your work? How are you using different social media channels to market your work? At the moment I’ve just made a Facebook page and I’ll make an Instagram page in a short time but I don’t really have the time to feed it. So, I’m thinking of using a communication agency to do it for me. DELEGATE, a big word! What’s your greatest fear as an entrepreneur? My biggest fear as an entrepreneur, and I think for all entrepreneurs, is that we will not have enough work to feed all the families underneath us. For that reason, we remain aggressive to keep a good reputation and image on the market so that we do not run out of work. It’s all about service, about driving image. What’s the biggest factor that has helped you be successful? Integrity! Definitely. Integrity is a set of values that must be respected, even if nobody is watching. Honesty, trust, saying what you do and doing what you say you are going to do are all part of integrity. If you can’t, say you can’t. Integrity and all that it encompasses is virtue. My parents instilled values in us and we will apply them as 32

much as possible in the company. I won’t say I’m successful so I won’t be able to answer that question! The only advice I can take is to know how to adapt and re-adapt all the time! What do you enjoy most about what you do? On the Love side: my future husband is a very open person like me, we can exchange on so many points, something that I appreciate in him. He is also in the process of building and so we are lucky to be able to exchange without too many of the misunderstandings that other couples may experience. I thank God for the beautiful children I have, I love their joy of living and I can’t wait to get home to them. I am very close to them, very caring, and as much as possible to be close to them so that they can find in me a cocoon. I like the challenge, it’s a job that is constantly under pressure so I’m devoted. And I especially like as a painting contractor: to give color to the projects! What keeps you going when things get tough? I’m very self-motivated and for that I’d like to thank my future husband who is a go-getter and is very positive. He always has a good word for me when I am down. And then I always have in mind, and that, several times a day my motto “what does not kill us makes us stronger”! I love it too much! But if it hurts, it is because we are alive, right? And where there is life, there is hope. How can people connect with you? I’m very open, I usually go to people myself! If I’m not smiling, you have to know that it’s not right, you can see it on my face! I love people, really. Each person has their own garden of qualities and moments to share. And as I said at the beginning, my job takes me to meet many different people every week.
