THE FIERCE GODDESS ORIGIN AFRICA - THE POWER OF LOVE MODEL OF THE MONTH: ANJINEE RAMASAWMY MONOCHROME DIVA FOCUS : GURUARTS NILAH’ THE FASHIONISTA

ISSUE 53 EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Newstyle Community, First of all, the term fashion is very broad, it encompasses a wide range of cultures, countries, styles and types. A few of the most popular styles englobes: bohemian, preppy, vintage, chic, indo-western, avant-garde etc., and some famous types are haute-couture, ready-to-wear etc. According to the news, big brands like “Michael Khors, Versace and Ralph Lauren are seeing their profits plunging, the industry will have to reshape itself in the “new reality”. This is because no fashion shows can be held, which means no investors for subsistence.

Editor & Stylist

Our local situation is also as serious, most people are afraid to go out, even though vaccination has become the main requirement for some activities. Working from home has been embraced by most businesses as a precaution. Not to mention high fashion stores and some ready-to-wear store are suffering. People are no longer buying as they used to. They are more interested in comfortable clothes, because they hardly go out. If you look around or online for trendy outfit in 2021, you bearly see evolution from 2020 and 2021. At least we can see that on our local market. This is not a shocking fact due to our lockdown situation. Nevertheless, the new must-have in fashion at the moment is the mask. It has become an accessory for both men and women. It comes in many colors, styles and fabrics. With that, the Newstyle team wishes you a safe and enjoyable online magazine at www.newstyle.mu . INTERVIEW WITH

HEMPRESS LIONNE & GENERAL LOVE THE POWER OF LOVE

After a successful appearance in the last few years with some spine-chilling hits, the duo Hempress Lionne and General Love still spoil us with a basket full of songs that are cozier than a big wool jumper, with lyrics powerful enough to make even the hardest of hearts shiver and a rhythm that makes us move. Let’s meet a stylish duo like we’ve never seen before... It is July 2021, at Résidence Kennedy in Quatre Bornes. In this town there is a duo who share nothing but love. Christiano Marla, a 29-year-old native of Rodrigues, and Elora Augustin, Mauritian, 30 years old. Their stage names are General Love and Hempress Lionne. Beyond their love for each other, they share a love of music, Dancehall in particular. At the various concerts they performed, crowds flocked to see a thunderous show on the stage. Strangers, the DJ playing his music, laughter: it’s the usual cacophony before a concert. Then a boy and a girl enter the stage, with a crazy audience. The chords ring out, the two voices respond and intermingle. “Bubblin Queen”, the noisy people who find it hard to keep quiet, turn to the stage, and listen. “Desann pli enba”. For the length of a song, they are suddenly all mesmerized. “After our collaboration on the track Bubblin Queen by General Love and I, we are back with a new single. Our latest video is already available on YouTube. The title is “Kouma Nou Al Sa”. A video directed and filmed by Allan Kartel. We are shooting two video clips videos in a fortnight, and we are already very excited to present our next duet to the public which will be a Trap Music,” says Hempress Lionne. These different collaborations, small miracles, are marked by sharing, love and motivation. Simple and catchy songs. They are little stories that revolve around the theme of love and dancehall. Let’s go back a little in their history. At the age of

13 and 15 respectively, the lovers took their first steps into music. When General Love listened to artists like Admiral T, Sizzla, Bounty Killer, Movado, he was amazed by them and wondered how they did it. It was artists like these who inspired him to make his first steps into the creative world of music. For Hempress, it all started with hip-hop and dancehall. She then moved on to become a chorus girl. “It was the artists close to me that inspired, influenced and helped me get started,” she says. In 2013, the two lovebirds decided to unite their passion for music. He has already collaborated with artists such as Blakkayo, Mr Snype, Elijah from the Seychelles and Krys from Guadeloupe and her with Aynell and Politik nai, both from the Caribbean. The couple has been living together for over seven years. “That’s what makes it work. Alone, we couldn’t do it.” Says General Love who is also keen to highlight the important role played by their family in this adventure. “In the beginning they were not very supportive, my parents always wanted me to get a normal job, but music was always on my mind and in my heart. With time, when they saw my constant determination, desire, evolution and achievements, they started to understand me, support me more and be proud of me. I am grateful to them for that. I think the support of the family is very important. Everything is made easier by the fact that we live together. There’s this natural bond that’s there, plus it’s often duos, we talk to each other,” the lovebirds sum up. “It is a great honor to be featured in this great magazine. It will give us more exposure and allow us to be discovered by fashion and music professionals. - We will cherish them, in many years we will show them to our grandchildren,”

INTERVIEW WITH

ANJINEE RAMASAWMY MODEL OF THE MONTH

Newstyle magazine this month sits down for an exclusive interview with our gorgeous Diva Anjinee Ramasawmy to talk about portrayal of beauty, modeling and social media. Come and join us… With a figure that defies the laws of nature and a face that is almost supernaturally photogenic, it’s no surprise that Anjinee Ramasawmy is one of the most influential models in Mauritius. Almost 27 years old, she is currently studying Marketing management and handling a part-time job in insurance. The fashion world has always fascinated the young lady as it looks, for her exciting and lively and makes her feel great. “For me, fashion is a work of style that allows me to express myself in any way I want,” she says. Being an introvert, the fashion world has helped Anjinee embrace who she is and boost her self-confidence. It is also a way for her to voice out her personality without having to say a word. “I believe, when you look good, you feel good.” It all started for Anjinee in 2018 with an Indian style photoshoot with Diya Mauree and Kevin Shibnauth. This was her first photoshoot, where she enjoyed every single moment of it. A magical and a successful experience. Since then, Anjinee has been doing more photoshoots, that have all brought a unique feeling. Three years back, Anjinee Ramasawmy started modeling and it was easy for her to manage her time since it was all about photoshoots during her spare time. “I believe that time management and self-discipline are very important. I try my best to stick to my schedule as it allows me to balance work, studies, and personal life.” She points out. However, even if she loves the fashion realm, Anjinee admits that it is difficult to create an identity for modelling in Mauritius. Moreover, offers from companies are not enough to make a living. “This

environment is a very competitive one. Associating yourself with a modelling agency or doing modelling part time is much better. To be honest, I don’t remember going through any difficulties, but I try to do my best in each opportunity I get. It’s only a passion, not my every day’s job.” Says the young lady. Fortunately, Anjinee can rely on her family for the support and love. Elements that are very essential to her. She believes that beauty is much more than looks. It has more to do with your attitude, confidence, intellect and character. “I would advise, to learn as much as you can as it will prepare you for better opportunities in the future. Also, do not underestimate your capabilities as others will see you the same way you see yourself.” As Marilyn Monroe said “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world”. Anjinee strongly encourages girls to do their best and bring their own unique perspectives in this beautiful world.

Over the next few years, she wants to gain experience and develop skills in marketing management. She sees herself as a marketing manager for a big brand, that is her career goal. Her ideal path would be working abroad for a couple of years and acquiring more knowledge in this field. She also wants to travel and see the world, learning more about different cultures. The young lady lives by a beautiful quote- “Jobs fill your pockets; adventures fill your soul”.She believes that featuring in Newstyle magazine will light up one more achievement in her modelling journey and definitely help in building her modelling portfolio. “I am confident that it will provide new opportunities and greater experience.”

INTERVIEW WITH

SANJIVEN MARDAY [GURUARTS]

PHOTOGRAPHER & GRAPHIC DESIGNER

The relationship between the model and the photographer is essential to the quality of an image. It is one of the most complex aspects of portrait photography. Depending on what the photographer wants to bring out, the attitude of the photographer will be reflected in the attitude of the subject. Photographer Guruarts understands this and is able to bring out the personalities behind the faces of the models he works with. We asked her questions about the origin of her passion, her techniques for communicating with her model, and many other things Can you introduce yourself? Sanjiven Marday, known as GURUARTS (artist name). I am 39 years old and I work as a graphic designer and photographer. Tell us about your passion for photography? From a very young age, I was a fan of arts. I used to draw and paint. I learned different painting techniques. Then, during my art studies, I was presented with an SLR camera. From that day on, I started to see things differently. How did you start using it? I still remember that day. We had a walking tour of Canterbury. Each student had 5 minutes with an SLR camera, where we were asked to take pictures of what we thought was interesting around us. My very first pictures were of the architectural facets of the Canterbury church.

Did you encounter any problems during your trip? Not really. I was determined to learn and create my own identity. Tell us about your most difficult moments? The beginning was very difficult. I had to get accepted by the crowd and face criticism. But it was very helpful and made me stronger and better. What are the main things that motivate you every day? The idea that I can do better. That’s what keeps me going. Do you have any plans for the future? I plan to do an exhibition of my art photos, on a local and international platform. Any words of motivation for the readers of Newstyle? How do you think this magazine can help you in your career and your passion? I am very grateful to the editor of Newstyle for giving me the chance to share my work in this particular issue. It is a great initiative for artists like me.
