Bob Buckhorn Is My Choice To Be Tampa’s Next Mayor! An editorial by Gary Nager Although the room at the Pebble Crek Golf Club was packed and threee of the five candidates to replace Pam Iorio as Tampa’s mayor were on hand, the New Tampa residents in attendance at the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s Tampa Mayoral Candidate Forum may not be feeling any more confident about who to vote for on Tuesday, March 1. Yes, as you’re receiving this issue, Tampa’s municipal elections are just a few days away and although there were roughly 60 people in attendance at the Chamber’s forum, many of those on hand were there to support either former Mayor Dick Greco, former Tampa City Council member and Hillsborough County commissioner Rose Ferlita or former commissioner Ed Turanchik, and none of the questions that Chamber president Rachel Haviland read during the forum gave the New Tampa residents who were in attendance any real insight into what
the candidates know about New Tampa and its issues. Even though neither former City Council member Bob Buckhorn nor current Council chair (and former County Commission chair) Thomas Scott attended the forum, it would’ve been nice to hear where the three candidates who did attend stood regarding issues such as: the ongoing flap over the New Tampa Blvd. “Gateway Bridge,” the need for enhanced cooperation between the city and the county (since most of New Tampa’s communities — with the exception of Pebble Creek, Cross Creek and Live Oak Preserve — are located in the city) or how each candidate planned to solve our ongoing local transportation woes now that the countywide Transportation Sales Tax Referendum was defeated in November. As a New Tampa resident, business owner and Chamber member, I know I was hoping to find out where each candidate stood on these and other issues, but after watching two candidate forums on TV and one in person, it
was easy for me to narrow down my choice from among these five all very qualified candidates to just three. I was surprised to hear Scott, the senior pastor at the 34th St. Church of God the Our editor has last 30 years, say on a endorsed former BayNews 9 forum Tampa City that people have told Councilman Bob him that even though Buckhorn for he is “the most qualimayor, but... fied candidate, [he] can’t win because of the color of [his] skin.” Although I think Scott is a viable candidate, I definitely don’t believe he is the best candidate (he has spent precious little time in New Tampa, despite serving on either the County Commission or City Council continuously since 1996), nor do I believe that an active clergyman should be the chief executive officer of any governmental entity. I have known Ferlita for many years and like her very much personally,
...he also believes former County Commissioner Ed Turanchik would do a great job as mayor, too. but after hearing her speak three times during this campaign, I have yet to hear her give any specifics as to how she will improve the city if elected. She keeps saying “Jobs, jobs, jobs,” but doesn’t say how she plans to bring them here. The fact that, as a commissioner, she opposed giving land for the New Tampa Players theatre troupe because, in her opinion, this community theatre would “compete with the Performing See “Elections” on page 10.

‘Remember Them For How They Lived’—Col. Parker Schenecker Like so many of you, I’m a parent who loves his children, so it’s pretty much impossible for me to believe that any parent could possibly take the life of his or her own child. Even so, it has only been about a month since the New Tampa community was rocked by another unspeakable tragedy, as Tampa Palms mom Julie Powers Schenecker was just indicted last week for murdering her teenage children, Calyx and Beau. Although it’s only been a few weeks since Schenecker was found at her home by Tampa Police (TPD) officials, a few hours after she reportedly shot both of her children twice in the head, leaving her son Beau in the garage and daughter Calyx in her room overnight, the wounds suffered by this community are still very fresh. Schenecker had left a note saying that she also planned to take her own life, but she was still very much alive and covered in her children’s blood when she was arrested. Schenecker’s husband, U.S. Army Col. Parker Schenecker, was in the Middle East when he got the call about the tragedy. A few days after his children were killed, Col. Schenecker spoke publicly about the incident for the first time at a memorial service held at the First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace. Surrounded by a crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people, many of whom had no knowledge of the family before the tragedy, Col. Schenecker asked for
An editorial by Gary Nager everyone to “remember how they lived.” Col. Schenecker recently met with his wife for the first time, but it has been reported in other media that he is filing for divorce and has moved back to Texas, where his children were buried. I have read all of the postings on Facebook since these two beautiful children were murdered, but like Col. Schenecker himself, I can’t focus on a reportedly previously loving mother who obviously had something snap inside her. I don’t believe that anyone can possibly have a good explanation for why or how any parent, whether depressed or on medication — and no matter how “mouthy” his or her teenagers may be — could possibly hold a gun to their precious children’s heads and pull the trigger. Therefore, in my opinion, this senseless tragedy is the story of how a community — and even a nation — can once again come together to try to help each other through such horror. It is the story of the King High Cross Country team, of which 16-yearold Calyx was a promising young runner. It’s the story of the players, coaches and fellow parents involved in the Fusion Football Club, for which Beau was a talented player, and even the other soccer programs throughout the county, trying to make sense of it all. It’s about grief counselors at not only King High, but also at Liberty Middle School and at churches throughout the area doing what they can to help other children and their par-

ents deal with the inconceivable. One local resident told me that at St. James United Methodist Church in Tampa Palms, one of the closest churches to the Ashington Reserve subdivision where the Schenecker family still owns their home, as many as 100 children showed up the evening after the news broke to console each other. Unfortunately, this story also is about a father’s grief, having to deal with not only losing both of his children in the blink of an eye, but also with his wife admitting to and now being charged with their murders and possibly facing the death sentence herself for her actions — and even having
to address website scams supposedly established to help his family. So, while some people still focus on the woman accused of this most heinous of crimes, I feel compelled to offer whatever help I can to Col. Schenecker and to hug my own children, my family, friends and every one of you feeling the same sense of hopelessness and helplessness that I do. Rest in peace, Calyx and Beau. EPC Upholds Permit For New Tampa Blvd. Extension By Michael Smith Possibly putting an end to legal wrangling that has been ongoing for more than two years, the members of the Board of the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission (EPC) voted last month to uphold a permit that the commission previously issued to the City of Tampa allowing construction of the New Tampa Blvd. extension and bridge over I-75 (map). After hearing passionate statements from both supporters and opponents of the project, the EPC members (who are also the members of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners) voted 5-1 on January 27 to uphold the permit, which was required because the project will impact 2.2 acres of wetlands. Several of the EPC members, however, including Victor Crist, who cast the lone dissenting vote, did express concerns about some of the issues that had been raised during the appeals process. In the end, though, the majority of the EPC members noted that the rules governing the process did not allow them to deny the permit. The purpose of the controversial $17-million project is to link New Tampa Blvd. in the West Meadows subdivision with Commerce Park Blvd. in
6
Tampa Palms, and city planners say it will not only link the two neighborhoods, but also will provide some relief to the traffic congestion on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. Further, they say that the city is obligated to build the bridge because many of the developers of communities in New Tampa paid impact fees and other money towards its construction, going as far back as the mid-1980s, when the project was first conceived as part of the road network for the area. Opponents of the project, most of whom are residents of either the western sections of Tampa Palms or West Meadows, have long argued, however, that it will diminish their quality of life by bringing increased traffic into their neighborhoods. So, after the EPC issued its permit in January 2008, three of those residents, husband and wife Warren Dixon and Andrea Braboy, who live in Tampa Palms, and Evelyn Romano, who lives in West Meadows, sought to challenge it, saying in essence that by ignoring issues related to public health, safety and welfare, the EPC hadn’t followed its own rules in issuing the permit in the first place. After the initial hearing in September 2009, however, Dixon and Braboy were dismissed as appellants in the case, which then moved forward
with Romano as the sole appellant, although Dixon continued to act as her attorney, and Braboy provided testimony in subsequent hearings. After multiple hearings that continued through 2009 and most of 2010, the administrative officer overseeing the process twice recommended that the permit be upheld, but it still was up to the EPC to either uphold that recommendation or ask that the case be sent back for additional hearings. More than two dozen people, representing both sides of the issue, registered to speak at the EPC meeting, but they were limited to saying simply whether or not they supported the project, since additional testimony would have been considered new evidence, according to an EPC administrator. As a result, both sides were almost equally represented in the public comments, with many of those who spoke in favor of the project coming from the business community. Among them were Mike and Garrison Urette, developers of the Tampa Palms Professional Center, which is located on Commerce Park Blvd.; Richard Radkey, owner of the
Primrose School of Tampa Palms, which also is also located off Commerce Park Blvd.; and Rhea Law, an attorney with the Tampa firm of Fowler, White & Boggs who said she was speaking on behalf of several local business owners. “My clients have placed their businesses in this community waiting for this transportation improvement to take place,” Law said. “They’ve waited long enough, and ask that you not delay in

moving forward.” As expected, most of those opposed to the bridge live in either Tampa Palms Areas 4 or 8 or West Meadows. The comments by Brad Van Ryan, who lives in The Promenade in West Meadows, were typical. “I am adamantly opposed to the bridge being built,” he said. “You have the ability to remand this back to counsel to review the long-range plan once again to see if the bridge in its current location is necessary. I think we need to see what is going to happen once the widening of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. is completed and traffic gets back to normal and we can see how we’re being impacted.” After all of the public speakers were finished, the EPC members debated whether there were legal grounds to deny the permit. Attorneys for the city and the EPC argued that there were not, because the EPC’s primary task is the protection of wetlands and water, and the permit addressed that issue through a mitigation agreement. “The whole issue before you is an environmental permit,” city attorney Doug Manson said. “It’s not about whether the bridge should be built or not. What’s before you is whether the wetland impacts that we propose for the City of Tampa meet your wetland impact standards, and the hearing officer says it does, [EPC] staff says it does
and the rulings say it does.” Crist, the former state Senator, remained unconvinced, however, and said that in deciding whether or not to approve the permit, the EPC should have looked at not only the immediate impacts, but also the long-term potential for impacts to residents’ health and safety. The appellants said, however, that much of their evidence was disallowed by the hearing officer because it was related to future impacts, such as traffic, noise and pollution. “It is pretty clear that current and future potential impact was to be taken into consideration (under the guidelines that govern the EPC),” Crist said. “The law is pretty clear that they wanted present and future health (taken into consideration), such as the noise and other things, and what I’m hearing here is that these were discounted.” Still, the other members of the EPC contended that those considerations were, in fact, outside the purview of the agency. “If you have an issue with traffic counts or whether the bridge is still needed, you take that to the Metropolitan Planning Organization or the Florida Department of Transportation,” chairman Mark Sharpe said. “You don’t bring that here for a discussion about a wetlands permit.” Commissioner Ken Hagan, whose parents live in West Meadows, said that
although he could empathize with those who would be affected by the bridge, he agreed that the decision was really out of their hands. “This is a narrow review,” he said, “and the focus is on the specific issues of the wetlands permit, not whether or not this bridge should be built. It’s my feeling that irrespective of our personal views of the project, when you objectively consider the limitations of this hearing, I think our hands are tied.” Following the hearing, Dixon said that he was disappointed in the outcome, but added that Romano could still appeal the EPC’s decision, although she had not yet decided whether or not to do so.
“We are taking the steps necessary to preserve Ms. Romano’s options on appeal,” he wrote in an e-mail. Meanwhile, the City of Tampa wasted no time in moving forward on the project. Public works administrator Steve Daignault said that the city has advertised the project for bid, and that process is expected to take at least a couple of months. After that, he said that the project, which is budgeted for $17,052,000 in the city’s FY 2011 budget, is expected to take 18 months to complete, although the city has agreed, after meeting with officials from Tampa Palms, to wait to begin construction until the current work on BBD is substantially completed.

N EW T AMPA Tampa Police Seeking Female Identity Thief
Detectives with the Tampa Police Department (TPD) are still seeking help from the public in identifying a woman who attempted to use stolen identification to get money from a local bank – twice. According to a TPD report, the woman, described as being in her 40s This image shows with long, dark hair, the ID theft susattempted to with- pect at the drivedraw money from through of a local the drive-through Regions Bank. teller window of the Regions Bank branch at 6202 Commerce Palms Blvd. in Tampa Palms on December 28, using the identification and bank information of a Trinity woman who had reported those items stolen earlier that day. TPD says that when the bank teller noticed that the woman was not the person pictured on the license and refused to process the transaction, the suspect fled the scene. At the time, she was driving a silvercolored SUV. Then, on January 26, the same
8
News Briefs woman returned to the same bank drive-through and attempted to cash a check, this time using a license that had been stolen from a car in Mobile, AL. Once again, however, the teller noticed that the woman did not match the person on the license and refused to give her any money. They asked her to come into the bank to complete the transaction, but once again she fled the scene, this time driving a white SUV. Investigators later determined that the check she was attempting to cash had been stolen from a vehicle in Hillsborough County on January 20. Investigators believe that the suspect will try to commit other fraudulent acts at other banks in the area, and are asking anyone who has any information about the case to call 231-6130.
Brazen Thieves Victimize Local Unwary Drivers
Auto burglaries, especially when valuables are left in plain sight inside a vehicle, continue to be a problem in the New Tampa area, as a couple of local residents found out after being victimized at area businesses. According to reports issued by the Tampa Police Department (TPD), in the first case, the victim left her purse
on the floor of her car while she went into the New Tampa Family YMCA on Compton Dr. in Tampa Palms on the afternoon of February 11. When she came back out, she found that the passenger’s side window of her SUV had been smashed and the purse was gone. Within the hour, a credit card from the purse was used at a gas station on E. Fowler Ave., where there was video surveillance, but no suspect had yet been apprehended at our press time. In the second case, the theft occurred while the victim was dropping her child off at the Kinder Care day care facility in Tampa Palms on the morning of February 17. Although she was inside the facility for less than 10 minutes, when she returned to her vehicle, she found that the driver’s side window of her car had been smashed out and her purse had been stolen from the front seat where she left it. No suspects were seen, but a credit card from the purse was used at a gas station in the area of I-75 and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. about 15 minutes later. There was no video of the suspect available from either crime scene, however, and the case is under investigation. A TPD spokesperson says that these cases demonstrate the importance of not leaving valuables in a vehicle, even if you are going to be away from it for a brief period of time. It’s also not a good idea to leave
your keys in your vehicle, either, as another victim discovered following an unrelated incident. In that case, the victim, a local landscaper, left the keys to his work truck in the ignition of the vehicle while he and his crew went into the McDonald’s in the New Tampa Center for lunch at around 11:30 a.m. the morning of February 14. While inside the restaurant, an unidentified black male was seen entering the vehicle and driving off with it and the trailer full of lawn equipment that was attached. Although a number of TPD officers and a police helicopter quickly responded to the scene, the suspect still managed to elude capture.

“Election”
Continued from page 1 Arts [now the Straz Center]” in downtown Tampa, was a clear indication she either didn’t understand what the New Tampa Players are, had an obvious antiNew-Tampa sentiment, or both. Like Ferlita, I have had a great personal relationship with former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco, who ran the city well twice (he preceded Iorio for eight years) and also served on the City Council in the 1960s. Dick’s campaign has rightfully focused on his success in being “Tampa’s top salesman,” bringing everything from the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel to MetLife and other major companies to Tampa, and I have no reason to believe that he couldn’t do another outstanding job. But even though, as he says as often as possible, Greco is the only candidate who has actually done the job the others are promising to do, he admits that selling Tampa will be tougher this time around, because of the lagging economy nationwide. And, I believe his age, 77, has to be a factor in whether or not he be as successful this time. Greco has promised me that former city “czar” Ron Rotella will not again be his administration’s top staffer, which I appreciate because Rotella was impossible to like for people in my business. He rarely returned phone calls, said things at public meetings that often weren’t completely true and complained vehemently when called out. I also got a clear indication that Greco’s time has passed when he compared the race riots in Tampa in the late 1960s to a “panty raid” and even though it was taken out of context, he caused an even bigger flap recently when he said his opponent, Rev. Scott, could have a job in his administration as “my chauffeur.” I don’t think we can afford those kinds of faux pas, in light of the economy and politically correct times we live in, even though Greco and Ferlita continue to be the two favorites to advance what is certain to be a run-off election from this very tough field of five qualified candidates.
10
I have been very impressed with the vision and plans for the city of Ed Turanchik. The former “Commissioner Choo-Choo,” as he was called for first coming up with a plan to bring passenger rail transit to Tampa, I gave Ed big props for saying publicly that he didn’t support the November referendum because “We simply couldn’t afford to spend $2.5 billion to move only 28,000 people a day.” Turanchik, who didn’t have Bruce B. Downs Blvd. on the original list to get a rail line, believes BBD should instead be served by greatly enhanced rapid bus service to and from a rail center at USF. He also believes Tampa should buy up the existing CSX rail tracks and place our “light” rail along those lines, with bus service from the major residential areas to the lines, and build only one new line, linking downtown to West Shore. He also has an impressive plan for dealing with foreclosures and vacated homes that he hopes to sell to the community. Turanchik is surely a visionary, but whether or not he can be a leader who can sell his ideas and build coalitions remains to be seen. I already know that Bob Buckhorn can build coalitions, despite the fact some people didn’t like that he was mistakenly seen as the architect of the unpopular six-foot rule at Tampa’s strip clubs. When Bob served citywide on the City Council, he was the only nonDistrict-7 (New Tampa’s district) Council member who ever called leaders in New Tampa (including yours truly) for their opinions on issues prior to votes on those issues. He says Turanchik’s plan for passenger rail along CSX lines won’t be enough to serve Tampa’s needs, but is open to incorporating some of Turanchik’s ideas into his own plans. He is a solid family man who I believe has the city’s best interest at heart and the ability to bring jobs here. I therefore endorse Bob Buckhorn for Mayor. The other races in which I have opinions are City Council District 1 (citywide) and District 7 (New Tampa). In District 1, I endorse New Tampa resident Curtis Stokes, who
Local Realtor To Challenge Caetano For District 7 Seat In the upcoming City of Tampa elections, incumbent District 7 City Council member Joseph Caetano, whose jurisdiction includes all of New Tampa (along with some other areas of north Tampa), will face the challenge of three opponents, including one fellow New Tampa resident, Dean Hale. Ask Hale, a 44-year-old Realtor and first-time candidate for public office, why he is running, and the first thing he cites is, “a general discontent with the way government has been working.” Or not working, as the case may be, as Hale says that as a former business owner, he has experienced firsthand the difficulty of trying to operate a small business in the city. In fact, “Tampa is a very anti-business city,” says Hale, who adds that in addition to owning his own business, he also has spoken to a lot of small business owners, and the general feeling is that there are a lot of obstacles that must be overcome by anyone who wants to do business in the city. “I think the city needs to be more pro-active in promoting business rather than hindering it,” he says, and adds if he is elected, he would look at overhauling the city’s entire business regulatory system. In response to one pressing local issue, Hale also says he would support a total ban on panhandling in the city, although he would allow exceptions for reputable charitable groups. And, as far as New Tampa is concerned, Hale says that the city needs to continue to look at traffic solutions for the area, although he feels the widening of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. will alleviate a
big part of the ongoing congestion problem. He does say, however, that he thinks the roads in New Tampa are “being neglected,” and says that Caetano could “do a better job” in getting money and attention for the area. He also perhaps hints at Caetano’s widely-publicized financial issues when he says that he thinks the current City Council members are “too side-tracked at times to look at the big picture.” ”I also think some City Council members put blinders on, and are not willing to go outside the box when it comes to solving issues,” Hale says. However, Hale adds, that although he brings an “optimistic, proactive, let’s-get-things-done approach” to the table, along with “fresh ideas and renewed optimism,” he also understands that he doesn’t have solutions for all of the city’s problems. “The last thing I want to do is go in thinking I know all the answers, when I don’t even know what some of the questions are,” he says. “Instead of self-serving, I want to be a public servant, to get out and see what the residents want.” He adds, “In the end, issues change from week to week and month to month. That’s why I stress morals, character and integrity, and honest, responsible leadership, and that’s not going to change.” Hale lives in Hunter’s Green with his wife of 26 years, Mercedes, a Tampa lawyer. The couple has a 10year-old daughter, Katie. For more information about the candidate and his campaign, visit DeanHale2011.com. —MS
was appointed to the Council last year and has shown himself to be intelligent, responsive and supportive of the New Tampa community. And, even though there is another New Tampa resident, Dean Hale, in the running, I endorse giving incum-
bent Joseph Caetano another four years in District 7. Joseph has brought new traffic lights, ambulances, fire stations and other needed improvements to our area and he always does his homework on issues both in New Tampa and throughout the city.

Three Candidates Attend Chamber’s Tampa Mayoral Candidate Forum
More than 55 chamber members and guests packed the room at Pebble Creek Golf Club on Feb. 14 for the Tampa Mayoral Candidate Forum hosted by the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce. Candidates Rose Ferlita, Dick Greco and Ed Turanchik
answered questions from the audience in a Town Hall-style forum and were asked to compare their vision for the city to the other candidates. They also answered questions about regional issues including transportation, water resources, development and city bureaucracy. Ferlita said she envisions getting things done through building partnerships between the city, county and business interests. Greco focused on his past record as mayor and told the audience that past success is the best indicator of future performance. Transportation and transit as well as planning for development and expansion around the University of South Floridacampus would be key issues in a Turanchik mayoral administration. Tampa City Council chairman Tom Scott phoned his regrets early in January because he had responsibilities at the State Fair on that date. Former Tampa City Council member Bob Buckhorn canceled his appearance the night before the forum.
Chamber Members Enjoyed A Winter Wonderland At The Fairfield Inn

New Tampa Legal Counsel Offers Resolution, Protection & Closure By Melissa O’Brien The passing of a loved one can be a very difficult time. Not only are you grieving, but there also can be a number of important legal matters to navigate after someone dies. For Pebble Creek resident Rick Brake, being the executor of his father’s will posed challenges that he had never faced before. “You don’t deal with these issues that many times in your life, and my father’s passing was the first time I have ever been the executor of a will,” says Brake. “I reached out for guidance to attorney Anissa Morris, and she immediately took all the burden and stress off of me. She took charge of everything of a legal nature that needed to be done so that I could take care of other aspects of his death, including the grieving process.” Anissa Morris, Esq., is the founder of New Tampa Legal Counsel, located in the New Tampa Professional Park, behind Pilot Bank off of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in Pebble Creek. She opened the firm in September of 2010 and says the focus of her practice is on resolution, protection and closure. “I strive to make sure that every client’s issues are resolved in a manner that they won’t have to come back and revisit it,” says Morris. “I don’t want
18
my clients to have to go through any additional stress or expense, so I make sure there are no dangling issues that are left unresolved.” New Tampa Legal Counsel is Attorney Anissa K. a family law pracMorris of New tice that focuses Tampa Legal Counsel on three core areas of law, including estate planning (succession planning, trusts, wills and guardianships), marital and family law (adoption, paternity, alimony, child support, divorce and pre- and post-nuptial agreements) and probate and trust administration. Morris says she sees how the tough economic times have had an impact upon families and her goal is to make the legal process as easy for them as possible. “When people are divorcing, we strive for a collaborative divorce, where couples agree to forgo the courtroom and share resources to save money and reach an amicable resolution,” says Morris. “In divorce, no one is a winner. I remain objective and help clients see the bigger picture. Most couples, because of children, still will have to
deal with their ex-spouses forever in some way, and if you can resolve things peacefully, it makes it better for everyone involved.” She adds that while she is, “a tough, assertive advocate for clients, I take pride in my ability to negotiate and compromise. Bringing civility into the process and protecting my clients legally, emotionally and financially is very important to me. Many of my clients also like the convenience factor of having someone nearby. I have clients who are around my age, with elderly parents, and if they cannot come here to my office, it is easy for me to go to a client’s home to make it easier on their elderly parent.” Morris is originally from Kentucky and graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati for undergraduate studies and then Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky. Her first position out of law school was as an assistant prosecutor for Kenton County, Kentucky and she has been admitted to the bar in Ohio, Kentucky, and Florida. Morris and her husband Mike relocated to Tampa 13 years ago and, after working on a part-time basis for a number of years, she decided to open her own firm. In her spare time, Morris volunteers as a guardian ad
litem for children in foster care. For Rick Brake, working with New Tampa Legal Counsel has made him think about his own future. “Working through my father’s death with an attorney made me realize that I needed to get my own personal affairs in order,” says Brake. “I will most certainly use Anissa for my legal services because of her meticulous attention to detail and her organization and follow-through.” “You never know when you will need an attorney,” says Brake, who found Morris because their children both attend the same dance class. “When this situation came up with my family, I didn’t know who else to call and I did not have time to shop around. Her ability to listen to our concerns in a calm and compassionate way really helped me through a difficult time and her expertise made me worry a lot less.” Paul Beaver, who lives in the Creekwood community in Cross Creek, has used New Tampa Legal Counsel’s services for a number of business-related issues. “Anissa has a wide range of legal specialties,” says Beaver, who owns his own business, Amazonia Expeditions. “She helped me through a dispute with a credit card processor, and she also

helped my wife, Dolly, with the powers of incorporation for her business. My father is 95 year old, and she is helping us with any legal matters we have pertaining to him. She has done an outstanding job. The main thing that impresses me about her is that she has such a broad range of expertise. She can help me with my business and with per-
sonal matters. She really does a terrific job.” New Tampa Legal Counsel is located at 8905 Regents Park Dr. (off of BBD Blvd, behind Pilot Bank and near the entrance to Pebble Creek). For additional information, call 994-8858 or visit NewTampa LegalCounsel.com.

North Tampa Spine & Joint Center Can Help Reduce Your Pain By Michael Smith According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), back pain is one of the most common medical problems among Americans, 8 out of every 10 of whom will be affected by it at some point in their lives. Back pain also is the number one reason why people go to see the chiropractor, but according to Dr. Travis Mohr, D.C., owner of the North Tampa Spine & Joint Center in the Tampa Palms Professional Center off Commerce park Blvd., there is much more to the modern practice of chiropractic than just the back-cracking specialist that many people think of when they hear the word. In fact, however, Mohr says that spinal adjustments are only one of three components at the foundation of chiropractic care, which he says can be effective for treating not only back pain, but also a number of other diverse issues, including asthma, PMS, tension headaches and stress, and can help improve a patient’s overall state of general wellness. And the latter is at the core of what sets chiropractic care, which is considered an alternative therapy by the NIH, apart from mainstream medicine,

Mohr says. While the standard medical response to a given condition, such as a headache, for example, would usually be to prescribe medication. That might allevi- Travis Mohr, D.C. ate the symptom, the headache, but it would not address the underlying cause of that symptom, and the medication itself often comes with its own set of side effects. Doctors of Chiropractic, on the other hand, look first for the primary cause of whatever the patient’s issue may be, and treat that, however, without the use of drugs or surgery. “That’s the whole purpose of chiropractic,” Dr. Mohr says. That’s also why in addition to spinal adjustments, which are used to treat certain issues, Mohr also utilizes soft tissue therapies for issues involving muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia (connective tissue that is found throughout the body). He says that many of those issues are caused by injuries, such as from participating in sporting activities or auto accidents, while others, such as carpal tunnel syn-
drome, can be caused by simple repetitive actions, chronic stress or even poor posture. Which leads to the third component of Mohr’s course of care for his patients — a personalized exercise plan that he says helps speed the healing and recovery process while at the same time helping to ward off future issues. He adds that education, or helping his patients learn about the things they may be doing and how they are affecting their health, or lifestyle changes that they can make to improve their overall wellness, is also key. That’s why, in addition to striving to educate his patients at the Spine & Joint Center, he also can often be found giving informational lectures to groups and organizations around the area. He also offers a low-impact exercise and stretching class for the employees of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Center. Mohr received his undergraduate education at the University of Wisconsin, where he graduated cum laude, and went on to receive first his Doctor of Chiropractic degree (once again, graduating cum laude), and then a Master’s degree in sports rehabilitation at Logan College in St. Louis. He opened the Spine & Joint Center in 2009, and says that he finds great satisfaction in help-
ing his patients resolve their problems and live healthier lives. “The best thing is when you have a patient who has been to numerous doctors without result, but after just three visits they are feeling better, that feeling is priceless, and very rewarding,” he says. That’s pretty much the experience of Tampa Palms resident Lee Schielke and his wife Michele, both of whom say they’ve had remarkable results from their treatment by Dr. Mohr. Lee, who has been suffering from chronic neck and back pain for years, says that he had been seeing another chiropractor without any noticeable results, and, looking for another in the local area, happened to find Dr. Mohr on the internet. Mohr also was able to work with Lee’s insurance carrier, too, which was important, since not every chiropractor can. Lee says that he also likes that Dr. Mohr offers more flexible hours, including Saturdays, which helps with his busy schedule. Best of all, however, is the fact that the treatment he’s received “has helped tremendously,” he says. Michele, meanwhile, who suffers from a misaligned vertebrae, says that she used to have to go to the chiropractor for adjustments at least once or twice per week. “If I didn’t, I would be

Big Frog’s 1-Year Celebration Congratulations to owners Patricia Cardona and her husband, Hugo Garza, store manager Luis Acevedo and graphic artist Daniel Dupre on the oneyear anniversary of Big Frog Custom TShirts & More of Wesley Chapel, which is actually located in Lutz, on S.R. 54, a mile next to Xtreme Adventures, less than a mile west of S.R. 56. The store hosted an incredible one-year anniversary party last week which was attended by more than 100 people who got to enjoy great empanadas from Mr. Empanada in Tampa and Jamaican beef patties provided by Bibi’s, which is located next to Big Frog. Although the store is celebrating a year in business, the Pasco-Hernando Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and representatives of the Greater Wesley Chapel and Central Pasco Chambers of Commerce also were all on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Cardona and Garza, who live in New Tampa, moved to this area from Venezuela. Cardona says they chose this area because her sister Beatriz, the owner of Sign-A-Rama of New Tampa (located next to Nutrition S’Mart on Bruce B. Feinberg, who appeared before the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association (FRLA) meeting at Saddlebrook Resort Tampa in Wesley Chapel January 19, gave Gulf Coast hotel and restaurant owners an update on how his independent organization is still sorting out claims for damages from the spill. Feinberg’s appearance before the FRLA followed town hall meetings in Fort Walton Beach and Panama City.
Keith Overton of the TradeWinds Islands Resorts in St. Pete Beach, the FRLA’s outgoing chairman, said that Feinberg was making the best of a Ken Feinberg difficult situation, as many Florida hotels and restaurants still hadn’t been paid their share of the $20 billion BP pledged for oil spill reparations. Feinberg said 470,000 claimants had been paid $3.2 billion in five Gulf Coast states to date and 3,288 Tampa Bay area businesses had received $50 million of that total.-GN

Lutz Doctor Specializes In Whatever Might Be Ailing You By Michael Smith While most physicians choose to specialize in one specific area of care, such as cardiology (heart) or nephrology (kidneys), doctors of internal medicine commonly treat ailments that affect any or all of the body’s internal organs, hence the name. “I like to say we are the captains of the ship,” says Dr. Daniel Heinig, M.D., who is Board-certified in Internal Medicine. Heinig has been practicing medicine for more than 20 years, and opened his own office, at 23532 S.R. 54 in Lutz, in September 2006. Prior to that, Heinig, who is a native of Leavittown, PA (although he moved to Florida at a young age and attended high school in Orlando), received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of South Florida (USF) and completed his residency at St. Barnabas Community Hospital in New Jersey. Following his residency, Dr. Heinig, who now lives with his family in Tampa Palms, returned to Florida and taught as an associate clinical professor at USF for two years, before

Wildcats Roll Through First Round Of Regional Playoffs By Michael Smith After cruising to a dominating victory that gave them their second consecutive Class 6A, District 8 championship, the Wharton High Wildcats stepped up once again to win their first round match-up in the 6A Regional quarterfinals. In the District championship, which was played at Wharton on February 11, the Wildcats defense shut down the Plant High Panthers and their star, junior guard (and Hillsborough County scoring leader) Michael Frazier, to earn a 56-40 victory. The game was close in the early going, and tied at 19-all at halftime, but the Wildcats broke it open in the third quarter and never looked back, sealing the win with several spectacular plays in the closing minutes that had the home crowd roaring as the final buzzer sounded. The win was an emotional one for the team, and their head coach, Tommy Tonelli, whose father passed away two days before the game.
The Wildcats were led by senior Xavier Owens, who finished the game with 28 points, and senior A.J. Astroth, who had 19. Frazier finished the game with just 13 points, less than half of his season average. That victory set up a first-round quarterfinal match-up with the North Port Bobcats, which Wharton also hosted, and while this one was closer, the Wildcats took the lead partway through the first quarter and never trailed again for the rest of the game, despite facing another scoring powerhouse in North Port’s 6’-7” center, Kasey Wilson. Astroth finished with 15 points to lead all Wildcats scorers, followed by Owens and sophomore guard Sir Patrick Reynolds, both of whom had 11 points. At our press time, Wharton was scheduled to host Sarasota-Riverview, which defeated Plant (which advanced as District runner-up) by a margin of 63-60 in their quarterfinal matchup, on February 22. We will update the ‘Cats’ progress in our next issue.
WHS coach Tommy Tonelli (left) jumps for joy as senior Xavier Owens (15) jams home two of his game-high 28 points against the Plant Panthers.

Studio F.I.T. Offers Affordable Personal Training Options By Melissa O’Brien Sarah Kays is a long-time runner, and she knows the importance of being physically fit. But, the Seven Oaks resident doesn’t rely solely on running to stay in shape. She knows that true fitness requires a total body workout that includes maintaining and improving your core strength to have the best chance of preventing the injuries that often happen while participating in sports. Since it opened, Sarah and her husband Kyle have worked out at Studio F.I.T. (which stands for Function In Training), a 1,600-sq. ft. fitness studio located in the Live Oak Center, just south and east of the corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and County Line Rd. “I see fitness methods changing,” she says. “The trend seems to be moving toward smaller studios like Studio F.I.T. that are not set up with a lot of lifting machines, but rather specialize in cutting-edge equipment that is flexible to use for trainers and those being trained. The equipment is less intimidating for people, but it has a tremendous impact on a workout.” Studio F.I.T. is owned and operated by personal trainer Christine Simmons, who opened the studio with a

partner who has since moved to another state. The studio is a unique personal training and customized group fitness facility that offers group exercise classes with professional instructors for as low as $3.75 a session, as well as affordable one-on-one personal training sessions. “We recently created a line of programs called Express Workouts,” says Simmons. “This is a 30-minute workout for people who are on the go. It is also a great way for people who are just starting out to come and see what programs we offer and to see what Studio F.I.T. is all about. We offer affordable and customized personal training and have a variety of options, including small- and large-group sessions, as well as personal training. Our goal is to keep people motivated and interested through cross-training and to keep getting results.” When she opened the studio, Simmons purchased equipment not found in most fitness businesses in the New Tampa area. The equipment includes three Gravity Training System®, which is a commercial-grade systems made by the same company that makes Total Gym® equipment, where up to three people can train at a time. We specifically structure our programs on a monthly basis to keep our clients motivated.” Simmons, who lives in Tampa Palms, has worked in the fitness industry for many years, and decided to open Studio F.I.T. in 2009. “I came from a corporate environment,” she says. “I was in banking for 27 years, but decided to make a career change based on the fact that I had been working in the fitness industry on a part-time basis,” continues Simmons, who is certified in kickboxing, group fitness, Pilates and other areas. “Christine has a way of motivating me,” says Kays. “And the other trainers at the studio also find out what internally motivates someone to work out. Insignia Hair Studios Can Create A Stylish Look For Any Hair Type I love being a stylist because it is a great way for me to express my creativity, and l love the way a new haircut makes my clients feel. I have had clients cry and hug me because of the dramatic, positive change that I have made to their appearance. It is very rewarding for me.” Insignia caters to both men and women, with barber Tim Sears handling most of the men’s styles. “Tim does a lot of corporate haircuts,” says Telsi. “A lot of men come in by appointment because he is very detail-oriented and makes sure he starts on time to accommodate the time-frame of the client.” O’Conner says that one of the main things that appeals to clients of Insignia is the warm, inviting atmosphere of the salon. “We are the hidden gem of New Tampa,” says Telsi. “We are tucked away off of Bruce B. Downs, but people keep coming back because of the positive word-of-mouth about our service. We want our clients to feel at home here. Telsi O’Conner, manager of Insignia Hair Salon, wants you to know that the nine professional stylists at the salon can turn any type of hair into a beautiful hair style. “Our focus at Insignia is on all different hair types,” says O’Conner, which is located at Live Oak Center (behind the Walgreen’s pharmacy just south and east of the intersection of County Line Rd. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd., next to Studio F.I.T.; see page 16). “There is no hair type that we can’t address. Melanie Moore (no relation to Kali Moore) lives in the Palm Cove subdivision and has been a client at Insignia for more than two years. “I was new to the area and couldn’t find anyone to do my hair until I read an article about Insignia in the [Wesley Chapel] Neighborhood News,” says Moore. “My concern was not only with the style, but with the care of my hair. She is really the A-Z on anything I can ask about hair care.” Moore also says she enjoys the overall “spa” experience of Insignia. “They will do your eyelashes, eyebrow waxing and whatever beauty care you need,” she says. “I love receiving a scalp massage when I get my hair washed because they give the best scalp massages. The entire experience there is wonderful.”

3 T’s Pizza, Subs & Salads Offers Great Value! By Gary Nager Co-owners Teon Gasiorowski and Tom VanDeVelde of the new 3 T’s Pizza, Subs & Salads on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., in the same plaza that includes Dunkin’ Donuts and Edible Arrangements, want to assure everyone in Wesley Chapel that although 3 T’s doesn’t feature true New York-style pizza, “We make our own sauce, use 100-percent real cheese and we promise to serve Tempting and Tasty food, served in a Timely manner.” As a native New Yorker, I will admit that pizza made on a conveyor belt will never surpass that made in a traditional pizza oven for me, but I have enjoyed the items I’ve sampled at 3 T’s to date. Teon and Tom (there originally was a third partner, whose first name also began with a “T,” thus the name 3 T’s), who are both from Detroit and have been involved in the restaurant business for years, are proud of their unique pizza sauce and the fact that they will always respond to customer demand for new menu items. “We’ve already added a number of new specialty pizzas,” says Teon, “including a Philly Cheese Steak pizza, a Buffalo chicken pizza and a “white”

La Cubanita Café Is A New New Tampa Favorite For Any Meal! By Gary Nager If you haven’t yet sampled the authentic Cuban fare at the new La Cubanita Café, located in the space previously occupied by Polo’s Italian Grill in the New Tampa Center plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., you’ve been missing out on a restaurant that just about debuted in my top-10 favorite restaurants in New Tampa for 2010, despite the fact it had only been open a couple of weeks at the time. I can say with all certainty that now that I’ve sampled pretty much everything on La Cubanita’s menu, that this restaurant is a true keeper that will likely crack my top five favorites in New Tampa by next year’s survey! Although co-owner and La Cubanita front-of-the-house guy Ilia
Anyone for a yummy, pressed bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich?
46
Kallas is actually a Greek man who lived most of his life in Australia, his wife Leticia is the Cubanita for which the restaurant is named and Ilia says many of the recipes were originally his wife’s, although, he says, “We have modified those recipes some, based on response from our patrons over the years. In the kitchen are Ilia’s partners Ryan Scott and George Hambos and, the New Tampa location isn’t the first for this concept. There have been two hugely successful La Cubanitas in the Brandon/Valrico area for years, one of which is still owned by Ilia and Leticia. The reason for the restaurant’s success both here and there is simple. La Cubanita features outstanding, authentic Cuban cuisine in a clean, attractive restaurant with great service and even better food — all at prices that seem almost impossibly low! For breakfast, you can’t beat la Cubanita’s Cuban toast or a cooked-toorder bacon, egg and cheese on perfectly pressed Cuban bread. Both are perfectly complemented by the best café con leché in New Tampa (which is saying a lot, really) and, best of all, you can enjoy any breakfast sandwich and a café con leché at la Cubanita for just $4.99 when you mention this article! Other breakfast items include a variety
of fluffy omelettes (egg whites available), home fries, sausage and more. I have visited La Cubanita multiple times for lunch and dinner and I have yet to be disappointed in any way. And, with at least half a dozen different hot items available in warming trays at la Cubanita’s immaculate, the service is always fast and friendly. The roasted pork in mojo sauce is undoubtedly the best I’ve had in Tampa, tender, soaking up that citrusy mojo “juice” all day. If you prefer pork chunks, the marinated masitas, available only on Thursday, are served with peppers and onions and also melt in your mouth. The chicken fricasé is a Spanish take on an Italian classic and the chicken literally falls off the bone in a zesty tomato-based sauce. I also absolutely flipped for La Cubanita’s crispy fish, which is a thick filet of the traditional flaky Spanish merluza, flash fried to perfection, as well as the classic ropa vieja (shredded beef in a light tomato gravy). Sales rep David Zacharia says the picadillo (ground beef) also rocks. Other items include garlic shrimp, palomilla steak, boliché and baked chicken. And yes, there are great pressed Cuban and other sandwiches, including authentic Greek gyros and chicken gyros, Greek salads, garbanzo bean and

Win $100 In Free Dining In Our ‘March Madness’ Contest! Even though the Final Four is played in April these days, there’s no doubt that the season college basketball fanatics (like me) look forward to most — known as “March Madness” — is upon us! Since we don’t yet know, at our press time, who will make it to the newly expanded field of 68 this year, we can’t print a grid for you and let you pick the winners of every game. Instead, we ask you to pick the 16 teams you believe will advance the furthest in this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Obviously, most of the teams that make it that far will be in the top 25, but based on previous years, at least one or two “sleepers” will make it further than some top-10 squads. So, fill in your 16 teams in the spaces provided below (yes, you can wait until the field of 68 is announced) and also predict for us the total points scored by the winning team in the national title game and give us your name, address, community, zip, daytime phone and valid email address when you mail, fax or email your entry to us no later than Thursday, March 17. Our Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift card to the restaurant of their choice anywhere in the Tampa Bay area and at least the top-5 runners-up will receive free local dining prizes worth at least $20. No purchase is necessary to enter and although more than one person per family may enter, only one winner per household can receive a prize. Good luck!—GN

How To Score Points In Our March Madness Contest: Pick the 16 teams you believe will advance the furthest in the 2011 NCAA Basketball Championships and fill them in the 16 spaces provided (left). If ANY team you pick wins the NCAA Championship, you earn 100 points. If any of your teams is the national runner-up, you earn 50 points. You also receive 30 points for picking teams that make it to the Final Four, 20 points for each Elite 8 team you pick, 10 points for each Sweet 16 team you pick, 5 points for teams that lose in the second round and 0 points for teams that lose in the first round. Please also tell us how many points the winning team will score in the national championship game. Don’t tell us which team you think will win the tourney, just pick a winning score. If there’s still a tie for the Grand Prize, the winner will be drawn at random from among all tied entries.
