Perfect Weather Makes For A Perfect Taste Of New Tampa®! By Gary Nager After downpours put a damper on last year’s crowds, it was easy to understand how New Tampa Chamber of Commerce president Rachel Haviland and her 2011 Taste of New Tampa® committee might be nervous about this year’s event. But, fate smiled big-time upon the Chamber and its signature event this year, as blue skies, warm weather (but with a nice breeze blowing) and a new location with visibility from Bruce B. Downs Blvd. combined to make the 2011 Taste a smashing success, as an estimated crowd of at least 3,000 people, most wearing big smiles, enjoyed sampling truly delicious food from more than two dozen restaurants on the football field at Paul R. Wharton High on March 20. “We are thrilled with Wharton, as well as with the turnout, the food, the entertainment (led by emcee Bob Thompson), our 54 sponsors (including the two primary sponsors, Florida

Hospital Wesley Chapel & Sweetbay Supermarkets) and business exhibitors, all of the volunteers, the fantastic restaurants and our wonderful Taste committee (led by long-time Chamber Board member Matt Palmer),” Haviland said after the three-hour event sent virtually The nearest Longhorn Steakhouse is on everyone in attendance Fowler Ave., but a lot of potential new See “Taste” on page 17. customers enjoyed its tasty steak tips.

Tampa’s Election Scheduling, New Tampa’s Turnout Problematic An editorial by Gary Nager I can’t even tell you how many New Tampa residents I’ve met who have had no idea that Tampa has it’s elections for mayor and City Council every four years in March — or that March 1 of this year was the city’s most recent Election Day, despite all the “Buckhorn for Mayor” and “Montelione for City Council” signs located outside of our eight polling sites. Considering how educated our populace is, where the average New Tampa resident is nearly twice as likely to have graduated from a four-year college than the rest of the city and county, it’s a little surprising that more locals aren’t even aware of, much less vote in the elections, especially when I hear so many complaints about the traffic on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., the amount of time it takes for emergency vehicles to get through that traffic and the shortage of recreation facilities. The fact the city elections are held at a different time of year than all others is a legitimate gripe, but if you read this publication or either of the local dailies, watch the local TV news or even get your local news on-line, there certainly is planty of opportunity to get information about the candidates for these important local races. The returns from the March 1 General Election weren’t pretty citywide, as only about 22 perrcent of the city’s nearly 190,000 registered voters cast a ballot. But, in New Tampa’s eight

polling sites, the numbers were even far less impressive, as our eight precincts (Precincts 356, 357, 358, 359, 361, 363, 365 & 367), which have a total of 23,757 registered voters, produyced only 3,315 votes, or an average turnout of 13.95 percent. Only Precincts 358 and 361 came anywhere close to the city’s average turnout, as between 2121.5-percent of registered voters at both of those locations cast ballots on March 1. No other New Tampa voting precinct even reached a 15-percent voter turnout. Do our local residents simply not care? Try building a road or a bridge in our back yards. Can we really continue to use excuses such as our population is too transient, we’re too busy raising our families and tending to our respective businesses, there’s no “convenient” way to vote here or “I only vote in the ‘big’ elections” and expect city and Hillsborough County officials to go out of their way to help us or even care about what’s important to us?

fewer than the 3,315 New Tampa voters who went to the polls on March 1 would help decide who became Tampa’s next mayor, the District 7 City Council member who would replace New Tampa resident Joseph Caetano (who finished third and didn’t advance to the runoff) and who would win the citywide District 1 and District 3 Council races (see page 8), I wouldn’t hold my breath on getting much help from our city government going forward.

N EW T AMPA Task Force Report: Multiple Issues Led To High Water Bills

A report compiled by the special task force formed by Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio to look into the issue of the unusually high water bills recently received by some city residents (including several in the New Tampa area) concluded that there were a number of factors that contributed to the problem. The members of the Tampa City Council, however, continue to press for more definitive answers, as well as possible solutions. The task force was created by Iorio in February after the city water department began receiving dozens of complaints about water bills that were, in some cases, as much as ten times higher than normal. Task force representatives, including Tampa chief of staff Darrell Smith, director of internal audit Roger Strout and administrator of public works and utility services Steve Daignault, presented their findings to the Council members on March 17. The 40-page report generated by the task force cited drier-than-normal weather, increased watering by many residents and new, higher rates for customers who used more water as the primary

6

News Briefs reasons why some bills were so much higher, but it also noted that “many problems were caused by the (city’s) bimonthly meter reading process, which relies on an estimated usage to compute the water bill every other month.” For that reason, the report says that the water department is currently developing a plan to begin monthly meter readings for all of its customers by the fall. It also noted that other changes — including additional staffing and training in customer service, a redesign of the water bills themselves and better water meter maintenance — also are in the process of being implemented and could help to prevent future discrepancies. Several of the Council members expressed disappointment at the lack of definitive answers provided by the report, and planned to discuss the matter further at their next meeting. In fact, District 7 Council member Joseph Caetano even noted that he himself had received a bill in March that was double what it normally was.

Contract For New Tampa Blvd. Bridge Not Far Off On the same day they received the water task force report (above), the members of the Tampa City Council

also learned that the city’s public works department had finished reviewing the bid proposals for the still-controversial project to build a bridge over I-75, linking New Tampa Blvd. in West Meadows with Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms. Caetano said that he had been asked by fellow Council member (and fellow New Tampa resident) Curtis Stokes, who was absent from the meeting, to request a status report from city staff on the bridge project to determine if the project could be delayed until the new Mayor and City Council members take office in April. According to Dept. of Public Works transportation manager Jean Dorzback, who presented the report, however, the city already has received and reviewed the bids for the project. Dorzback said that a total of 24 bids were submitted, with the lowest being the $12.4-million bid submitted by Prince Contracting of Tampa. So, the city’s contract administration office is now in the process of preparing a contract for the project, and that contract will be submitted to the City Council for initial approval at their meeting on Thursday, April 7, after which it will go to the new mayor, either Bob Buckhorn or Rose Ferlita (the March 22 run-off election results were not available at our press time, see pages 3 and 8), for final approval.

Both current Mayor Pam Iorio and current District 7 City Council member Joseph Caetano have expressed their support of the project, but Caetano did not make it into the run-off election, and it isn’t clear whether the bridge would receive the same support from either of the two candidates who were facing off in the run-off election, Lisa Montelione and Charles Perkins, or from either remaining mayoral candidate. Dorzback, however, said that the request for a review did not change the planned schedule for approval of the contract. “It wasn’t going to go forward under this [Iorio’s] administration, anyway,” she said. In response to requests from officials and residents of Tampa Palms, who fear that the bridge and extension project will dramatically increase traffic and diminish safety in their neighborhoods, city officials have agreed to delay the construction of the bridge until the widening of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. is substantially completed, in order to prevent drivers from using the extension as a way to avoid the construction on BBD. There also is still the possibility that the project could be delayed by further legal action by Evelyn Romano, a resident of West Meadows who challenged the permit for the project that was issued by the Hillsborough County

Environmental Protection Commission (EPC). Although the EPC voted to uphold the permit in February, Romano was still considering whether or not to appeal that decision.

Three Suspects Arrested In Grand Hampton Burglary Three Tampa men were arrested and charged with burglary and grand theft after police say they broke into a home in Grand Hampton (just south of County Line Rd.) while the occupant of the home hid and called 911. According to a Tampa Police Department (TPD) spokesperson, the three suspects, who were identified as Curtis A. Marsh, 19, Tynard M. Stokes, 19, and Dontae D. Freeman, 20, knocked on the door of the townhome on Trail Wind Dr. at around 1 p.m. on February 28. The resident, a 22-yearold female, was home at the time but didn’t answer the door. So, the three men then allegedly went around to the rear of the home and smashed a sliding glass door to gain entry. Then, while the victim was calling 911, the suspects removed a flat screen TV, a video game console and games and at least one credit card and left before police arrived. However, the victim was able to provide the officers with a description of the suspect’s vehicle and a partial tag number, and police began searching the area.

TPD officers found the vehicle parked at the Wal-Mart store on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., where the suspects had gone immediately after the breakin. As they surrounded the vehicle and began looking for the three suspects, another TPD officer who happened to be shopping at the store saw them and relayed their whereabouts to the other officers, and the three men were arrested without incident as they attempted to leave the store. The stolen property from the break-in was located in the suspects’ vehicle and the credit card was recovered from Stokes’ pocket, the report states. All three men were charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and grand theft, and all three were released after posting $9,500 bond.

Retrial Ordered In 2006 Double Murder Case Last month, an appeals court ruled that Luc Pierre-Charles, who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the 2006 killings of two Wesley Chapel High students, is entitled to a new hearing, based upon testimony about a videotape mistakenly allowed into evidence during his original trial. In his February 11 ruling, Judge Anthony K. Black wrote, with Judges Chris W. Altenbernd and Patricia J. Kelly concurring, that the judge in the original trial, Circuit Judge Pat Siracusa,

should not have allowed prosecutors to talk about a videotape of an interrogation of Luc’s brother Andre in the days following the murders of 17Luc Pierreyear-old Derek Pieper Charles and 18-year-old Raymond Veluz, whose bodies were found on a dirt road in the Trilby area on the morning of July 28, 2006. On the video, Andre appeared to nod his head when asked if Luc had committed the murders. Although the video wasn’t shown to jurors, prosecutors did question Andre about it during the trial. Under Florida law, however, such a gesture constitutes hearsay, Black wrote, and since that gesture was one of the main points of the state’s argument that eventually led to the jury’s guilty verdict, “we see no alternative but to reverse for a new trial.” Pierre-Charles was arrested in 2009 after a statewide manhunt that led to his capture. Prosecutors said that he and another man, Tyree Jenkins, killed the two teens because they believed Pieper had talked about his drug dealing and other illegal activities to police. On the night of the murders, Pieper and Veluz reportedly contacted PierreCharles to buy marijuana from him, and that’s when they were allegedly taken to the remote area and killed. Prosecutors had sought the death

penalty in the case, but after finding Pierre-Charles guilty following five hours of deliberation, jurors recommended life imprisonment instead. During the course of their deliberations, however, they did submit several questions to the court, centering upon his brother’s testimony, which Black said indicated that the hearsay evidence did influence their decision. Assistant State Attorney Manny Garcia said that the state could appeal the decision to the Florida Supreme Court, but the decision whether or not to do so had not been made by our press time. It also isn’t clear how or if the ruling will affect Jenkins’ trial, which is scheduled for April.

How New Tampa Voted In The March 1 Tampa Municipal Elections Buckhorn & Ferlita Advance; Caetano Ousted On March 1 By Gary Nager As I mentioned in this issue’s page 3 editorial, there were only three weeks between the City of Tampa’s General Election on March 1 and the Runoff Election on March 22, which meant that I would not be able to make runoff endorsements — or even report who was elected to most of the offices in which New Tampa voters were eligible to cast ballots — in this issue. In fact, the only things I can tell you for certain at our press time is that incumbent Mary Mulhern, who received 51 percent of the vote, retained her “at large” (citywide) District 2 seat and New Tampa resident Joseph Caetano, the incumbent in New Tampa’s District 7, finished third of five candidates in his attempt to win re-election and will therefore not serve a second term. To recap what happened on March 1 in the races that were not yet decided at our press time, former Tampa City Council member Bob Buckhorn (who received 23.5 percent of the vote, a little more than 9,800 votes total), the candidate I endorsed to be Tampa's next mayor, advanced to the March 22

8

runoff against former City Council member and Hillsborough County commissioner Rose Ferlita. Ferlita received nearly 1,000 more votes than Buckhorn on Mar. 1 and 25.87 percent of all ballots cast, while two-time former Mayor Dick Greco (9,441) finished a surprising third. In New Tampa’s eight precincts, Buckhorn (1,021 votes) and my second choice, former county commissioner Ed Turanchik (739), who finished fourth citywide, had the most votes, followed by Ferlita (676), Greco (675) and City Council chair Thomas Scott (168). In District 7, which includes all of New Tampa’s city-based precincts, as well as North Tampa, Caetano, one of two New Tampa residents in the race, garnered only 1,148 votes and less than 20 percent of the total ballots cast, as North Tampa residents Lisa Montelione and Charlie “White Chocolate” Perkins each finished with more than 30 percent to advance to the runoff. Nearly 900 of Caetano's 1,148 votes were cast by New Tampa residents, but even if he got all 622 of the local votes garnered by fellow New Tampa resident Dean Hale (779 total votes) on March 1, he would’ve fallen short of reaching the runoff. Iorio Breaks Ground For Fire Station, Dedicates Playground By Michael Smith In what will most likely be her last official visit to New Tampa as mayor, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio recently helped break ground for the area’s newest fire station and also cut the ribbon on the updated children’s play area at the city’s recreation center at the New Tampa Community Park. First, Iorio, along with outgoing Tampa City Council member Joseph Caetano and officials from Tampa Fire Rescue, turned over the first symbolic shovels of dirt at the new station, designated Station # 22, at the 8-acre site at 10871 Cross Creek Blvd. near Morris Bridge Rd. The city purchased the property for $750,000 in 2007 and received a $1.6-million American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA) grant in 2009 to pay for the construction of the new station. In addition, assistant fire chief Scott Ehlers said that the department also received an additional $3.9-million grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) program. That grant will allow the city to hire 36 new firefighters citywide, 15 of which will be based at the new station. “We’re very excited about this new addition,” Tampa Fire Rescue Chief

Capt. Lonnie Benniefield, who is assigned to Station #21, says that, depending upon the location of the call, the time of day and traffic conditions, it can take 18-20 minutes to respond to calls in some cases, especially if the firefighters from Station #21 are busy and assistance has to come from another station further away. “This new station will give us the capacity to get to most areas a lot quicker,” Benniefield said. The new 8,660-sq.-ft. station will be very similar in appearance to Station #21, with three drive-through equipment bays flanked by work and living quarters for the firefighters, but its design also will include a number of environmentally-friendly features, such as high-efficiency lighting, solar-powered exterior lighting and water heating, an energy-efficient HVAC system and the use of recycled materials throughout, according to Michael Boutros, general manager of the Pillar Construction Group of Clermont, the company contracted by the city to build

Following the groundbreaking at the fire station, Iorio and Caetano moved on to the New Tampa Community Park in Tampa Palms, where they were joined by Tampa Palms officials and members of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department for the dedication and a ribbon cutting for the newly updated children’s playground area in front of the New Tampa Recreation Center. The new improvements there included the unveiling of a new WeeVos play structure and the installation of a synthetic turf and a custom shade cover over the entire playground. “This reminds me of when I was young, except of course that we didn’t have all this high-tech equipment when I was a girl,” Iorio said. Parks officials said that the WeeVos play structures, which feature climbing bars, rope ladders, slides and swings, are especially designed for younger children between ages 2-5 and promote and enhance children’s growth and development. Meanwhile, the synthetic turf, which is made from recycled tires, not only helps prevent injuries, but also requires no maintenance and lasts prac-

Completed Projects Easing Wesley Chapel’s Traffic Woes With the installation of the new traffic signals, the extension of S.R. 56 is now complete, at least for the time being, although it eventually will be extended all the way to Hwy. 301. Shepherd says that the design of the further eastward extension has been partially completed, but construction is on hold, because the plan is to add to the road as more homes are built in that area of Meadow Pointe, and of course, new home building everywhere is at a virtual standstill because of the current economic climate.

By Michael Smith Although it may seem sometimes like the construction work on the roads in both New Tampa and Wesley Chapel is taking forever, some progress is being made, albeit slowly, and that is helping to take some of the pressure off local drivers who are trying to make their way around the area. Take, for example, the widening of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. (aka C.R. 581) in Pasco County, which recently was added to the list of completed projects. According to Pasco County chief project manager Bob Shepherd, the widening was all but finished after the final turn lanes at the intersection of S.R. 56 and 581 were opened to traffic on March 4. “The widening is completed from about a thousand feet south of 54 to County Line Rd., except for a little striping work that is left to be done in the area around the Target store, ” Shepherd says. With the opening of those final turn lanes, the intersection at S.R. 56 and BBD now features three turn lanes in every direction, making it one of the largest intersections in not only the Tampa Bay area but also in the entire country. Of course, the widening of BBD continues on the south side of County Line Rd., although the work in Hillsborough County is centered on the section of roadway between Tampa Palms and the Pebble Creek subdivision near Wharton High School. The section of BBD between Pebble Creek and County Line Rd. is currently scheduled to be the last section of the road that will be widened.

New Traffic Signals Working Meanwhile, traffic lights were recently installed and activated at the intersections of S.R. 56 and Mansfield Blvd. and S.R. 56 and Meadow Pointe Blvd., which should make things a lit-

Munchel Brothers Jewelry & Coin Exchange — Get Cash For

Munchel Brothers Jewelry & Coin Exchange is something of a combination of the two popular television shows — "Antiques Roadshow" and "Pawn Stars." Brothers Joe, Eddie and Chuck Munchel love that about their business, as they never know what might walk through the door. “It is sort of like those two shows in a sense,’’ Eddie Munchel says. “There have been some interesting and fascinating things that have come into our stores and unique items like those certainly can make for an exciting day in our business." Munchel Brothers Jewelry & Coin Exchange currently has three locations — Lakeland, Clermont and their newest store in the Shoppes at New Tampa of Wesley Chapel, next to PizzaMania. The brothers

14

worked in their family’s business for years and learned their respective crafts and trades. Eddie is a NAWCC-certified watchmaker and GIA-certified diamondologist; Joe also is GIA-accredited and a member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, while Chuck is both a GIA-accredited Jewelry Professional and a Master Jeweler. After lots of thought, the brothers decided to step out on their own and so far, things have been great. “Like any new business in today’s economy, nothing is easy,’’ Eddie says. “But, things have been going well and we will keep working harder to get to where we want to be.’’ Part of their plan for success starts with their customers. “We strive to make the experience a unique one for everyone who walks through

our doors,’’ Joe Munchel says. “We encourage people to never throw any coin, piece of jewelry or other collectible away without at least bringing it by for a free appraisal. The customer can decide then to keep their items, sell them to us, or sell them on the open market. No matter what they decide, they will leave knowing the true value of their items.’’ While the collectibles market fluctuates quite a bit, the gold market is at an all-time high and the Munchel brothers would love to make your day by offering you the highest price possible for your gold. “I see it all the time, where people will be cleaning out a relative’s possessions or maybe their own jewelry box, and they bring in their gold and silver thinking it might be worth a couple hundred dollars,’’ Eddie

Munchel says. “But, after we take a look at it, they are often shocked at how much their treasures are actually worth. Their couple of hundred dollars easily might be worth $2,500 or more in today’s market.’’ Unlike many jewelry and coin stores, the brothers also can appraise and purchase numerous other collectible items like historical documents, memorabilia from toys to sports and other celebrity or even political figure autographs, and Confederate currency. “We stress to people all the time that if they have something old, we would love to take a look at it,’’ Eddie says. “We don’t buy everything we appraise but we will be happy to give you a value for your items. We also do a lot of inhouse appraisals for folks who need things valued for insur-

ance purposes.’’ One of the strangest items they’ve seen — but valuable nonetheless — was a mourning necklace. “It was an early 1800s bracelet that was accented with human hair,’’ Eddie says. “It was kind of morbid but at the same time really fascinating to see one that well preserved and in good shape.’’ In order to keep current on market trends and values, the brothers occasionally host their own road shows throughout the state and also attend numerous trade shows. “The trade shows are important because they give us a better idea of the value of certain items,’’ Joe says. “We can do our research and go by our current sales but it’s very helpful to be on the road with several other vendors and see what

their idea of market value is for different items.’’ A long time Munchel Brothers customer is Lee Roth of Sunshine Growers in Lakeland. “I’ve known the Munchel family for over 20 years,’’ Roth said. “I have sent many friends and family members to their stores over the years to purchase engagement rings, coins or gifts and every single one of them was very satisfied. The boys are all very knowledgeable, helpful and considerate.’’ While the Munchel Brothers purchase a lot of items, they also want to remind customers of the large selection of retail inventory and unique items for sale in their stores, including the newest one in Wesley Chapel. “With Mothers Day and Fathers day coming up, we

encourage people to stop by one of our stores even if they aren’t in a selling market,’’ Chuck Munchel says. “We carry an excellent selection of jewelry, watches, coins and so on. If you don’t see exactly what you want, in most cases, we can design and create it for you. And, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to find that special Mom or Dad on

your gift list something that will go up in value one day. Most things people receive as gifts last for just a few years and then go to the curb for the garbage man to pick up. Our products are things that not only will provide instant pleasure but also possibly be worth more in a few years than they are today. Not many stores can claim that.’’

“Taste”

home more than satisfied. “We couldn’t have hoped Continued from pg. 1 for better weather for a festival, there were no overly long lines and there was plenty of food throughout.” Among our favorite dishes served were the steak tips from Longhorn Steakhouse, the paella from Café Olé, the hibachi grill food from Sushi Tsu and Wasabi, Taste of Boston’s clam chowder, the stuffed pasta by Pagelli’s, pot sticker dumplings from TGI Friday’s, the crispy fries from Five Guys Burgers & Fries, everything from Ciccio’s Lodge, the barbecue food from Texas Roadhouse and Cole’s BBQ, decadent cookies and brownies from Blondie’s Cookies, Antonio’s Pasta Grille’s (and Pagelli’s) perfect cannolis and the always-delicious ice cream from Bruster’s and North Pole Ices. We went to press with this issue immediately following the 2011 Taste, so we didn’t yet have any idea of the amount of proceeds raised for the many school and other non-profit groups who provided volunteers for this year’s event, but we will update you next issue. But, with or without definitive numbers, the New Tampa Chamber and those in attendance all have to still be smiling as you receive this less than a week after this year’s amazing event. I hope you didn’t miss it!

(Clockwise from top left): Planet Beach’s booth definitely attracted a lot of attention. Many in the crowd wanted to know when Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel was likely to open. Café Olé on Cross Creek Blvd. and Taste of Boston on BBD both had some of our editor’s favorite tastes. Miss Tampa Chloe Lupo was on hand to promote her run for Ms. Florida in July. Verizon’s face-painting booth was both spooky and fun for the kids.

If you have gently used fashions or accessories by Banana Republic (left) or a Marc Jacobs Bombay Satchel (right), you can make some quick cash by reselling these and other designer items to Sophia’s Boutique in the New Tampa Center.

Sophia’s Now Buying Designer Merchandise

When owner Charles Tuozzo opened his Sophia’s Boutique in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza (across Bruce B. Downs Blvd. from Hunter’s Green) in July of last year, he featured items like new offlabel designer-worthy clothing, as well as unique jewelry, shoes and accessories. But, in January, Tuozzo recognized that competing with the many designer stores in the nearby Shops at Wiregrass mall in Wesley Chapel wasn’t necessarily the best marketing plan. To that end, in January, Tuozzo overhauled his concept and, today, Sophia’s is New Tampa’s Upscale Secondhand Boutique, buying gently used designer labels, including everything from the top department stores, such as Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Ave, but also other high-end designer stores such as J Crew, Banana Republic, Juicy Couture, Anthropologie, Seven For All Mankind and True Religion, as well as handbags from Coach, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Coach, Cole Haan shoes, Chanel sunglasses, Legacy College Jewelry and many more. Buying manager Michelle Wyper says that, “Basically, we’ve created a niche between the mall and consignment stores such as Plato’s Closet,”

20

Wyper says. “Where Plato’s concentrates on ages 12-24, we’re looking for upscale fashions and accessories for women ages 18-60. So, whether you’ve lost or gained a bunch of weight or you just want to clear out some of those high-end labels to make some quick cash, we hope you’ll think of us first.” Wypers notes that Sophia’s is NOT really a consignment shop. “We will consign some really expensive items, like Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs purses,” she says, “but for the most part, we actually buy your merchandise for about 20-30 percent of what we can sell it for in the store.” Sophia’s (19020 BBD Blvd.) is open six days a week and will buy your merchandise from noon-5 p.m. on Sunday, 2 p.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, 2 p.m.-5 p.m. on Wed. & Thurs., and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Fri. & Sat. Basic Black Collection Moves To Wiregrass Mall Never underestimate the power of a driven woman with a passion for fashion. Back in 2008, West Meadows fashion expert Sydney Alexander brought her online store to a shop in the SuperTarget shopping center on Bruce B. Downs Blvd in Wesley Chapel. Alexander, a Massachusetts native, has had an eye for fashion since she was a little girl and followed through by attending New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Sydney went on to manage the contemporary sportswear department at Neiman Marcus and, three years ago, was able to realize her dream of owning a shopping destination where women could explore and become educated about trends and fashion that fit their lifestyle and bodies. This year, Sydney’s hard work and ambitious plans have come to fruition, as her Basic Black Collection has now reopened in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, across from the Aja Wiregrass night club. The Grand Opening celebration of the new Wiregrass location featured wine, cheese, cake and other

refreshments, as long-time customers and mall passersby enjoyed some great Grand Opening sale prices. “Basic Black Collection is aimed at women from (ages) 20 to 60, so there is always something for everyone,” Sydney says. “We pride ourselves in offering dresses, accessories & jewelry for a wide variety of women’s tastes, budgets and body types.” The new Basic Black Collection is now open at 28437 Paseo Dr., Suite 110, in the Shops at Wiregrass mall (between Dillard’s and Rac Room Shoes). To help Lenners raise money (the Man of the Year is the candidate who raises th most money), WCCC businesses paid a fee to display a banner or sign, have staff walk in the parade, or even have a float in the parade. And, don’t forget that the WCCC is hosting its fourth annual “Celebration of the Arts,” which also will be held at the Shops at Wiregrass, on Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, April 10, 11a.m.-6 p.m. For more info about the Celebration of the Arts, see page 1 or visit WesleyChapel Chamber.org.

The following Saturday, April 16, 8 a.m., the WCCC presents its fifth Annual Sporting Clay Shoot. This is a fun shoot for all ages and will be held at the premier Tampa Bay Sporting Clays facility (MyTBSC.com) off Ehren’s Cut-Off in Land O’Lakes. Way more fun than golf — where else can you ride around in a fancy golf cart and blast your bad shot out of the sky? The Sporting Clays Shoot will feature trophies, fun giveaways, gun drawing and food. For more information, contact Capt. Rob at 431-5887. Dr. Nicole Mitchell Can Help You Live Life With A (Healthy) Smile By Michael Smith Whether you realize it or not, the first thing many people notice about you is your smile. Of course, there are a plethora of products available these days that claim to whiten your teeth, freshen your breath and give you a dazzling smile, but the best way to a truly beautiful and healthy set of teeth is still a good relationship with a topnotch dental professional, like Dr. Nicole Mitchell, DMD. Dr. Mitchell, who opened her office in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza in New Tampa in November, practices all aspects of general dentistry, such as exams, cleanings, extractions, fillings and more, but she also specializes in cosmetic procedures, too, including straightening, crowns, implants, bridges and veneers, all of which can help give you the movie star smile you’ve always wanted. Dr. Mitchell is a native of Connecticut who moved to Tampa while she was in junior high. She attended Gaither High and then the University of South Florida, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, before entering the U.S. Army and receiving her DMD degree and advanced training as a dentist while stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. After the Army, Mitchell returned to the Bay area, where she worked at a group practice for another five years before striking out on her own. A self-admitted “people person,” Mitchell says she originally took up dentistry because she liked the idea of combining her love of science with the opportunity to work with her hands while helping to improve her patients’ lives. “For me, it’s the perfect combination of art and science,” she says. “I love what I do, and I’d do it even if I didn’t get paid for it.”

24

While it may be the general dental work that is the meat and potatoes of any dental practice, Dr. Mitchell says, to her, the cosmetic aspect of her practice is, “the fun stuff.” “That’s because it is the most rewarding, for both the staff and the patients,” she explains. “Changing a person’s smile makes a pretty dramatic difference in the way they look, and how they feel about themselves, too.” However, Dr. Mitchell and her staff also emphasize the importance of regular maintenance and preventive care, too, “above and beyond what a lot of other dentists do.” That’s because a healthy mouth is not only important for a nice smile, but it can also help to prevent a variety of other health problems throughout the body. In fact, Dr. Mitchell says, one recent study even indicated that the plaque that builds up on teeth is the same as the plaque that builds up in arteries, and showed that there is a link between periodontal disease and hardening of the arteries, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness and other issues. Despite all the advantages of receiving regular dental care, however, many people are still afraid of going to the dentist. That’s not the case with Dr. Mitchell’s patients, however. Not only does she utilize the latest in painless dentistry, her staff also is the most genuinely friendly and caring group of professionals you could imagine — from administrative assistant Laura, who mans the front desk, to Kristen, the hygienist, and Michelle, who assists Dr. Mitchell and also is qualified to perform many procedures herself — you’ll feel at ease as soon as you walk through the door. That was certainly the experience of Debra Kitter, who was so happy with the results of her dental work that she says she carries a stack of Dr.

Mitchell’s business cards to hand out to family members and friends. “I’ve referred probably six people to Dr. Mitchell already, including my daughter and son-in-law,” Kitter says. “I never liked going to the dentist but, with her, you don’t even feel it. She treats her patients like they are friends, and all of the girls who work there The friendly and caring staff at the dental practice of Dr. are so nice and Nicole Mitchell, DMD (second from left) in The Walk at outgoing, it’s Highwoods Preserve will leave you smiling, too. wonderful. He says the Greeks would put wet mud on a body and wherever the mud dried fastest, because that area was warmer,

Tampa Rejuvenation Focuses On Healthy Life Changes By Melissa O’Brien How is your quality of life? Are you overweight and exhausted? Are you tired of battling your weight — starving yourself and endlessly working out — only to gain it all back and then some? It may be time to get some answers as to why you are still gaining weight and feeling lethargic. “Now” just might be the right time to begin a compete change in lifestyle — a compete rejuvenation of yourself. Tampa Rejuvenation, a medical weight loss and wellness center located in the Palm Villa Centre next to the Shoppes of Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms, offers an integrated approach to health and well-being to enhance the quality of your life. Scientific studies indicate that the reality is that it may be even slight hormonal imbalances that are causing your weight battles and/or loss of energy. Tampa Rejuvenation’s team of experts is comprised of on-staff physicians, registered dieticians, clinical nutritionists, medical assistants and personal trainers who can identify, diagnose and create an individualized program to ensure each patient’s success. “What makes us different than other weight loss and wellness centers is that we are promoting a more complete

lifestyle change,” says Tampa Rejuvenation owner Brett Markowitz. “We combine the use of medicine, exercise and nutrition to create a customized program to get you healthy and to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many people don’t realize that proper hormone balance is crucial to maintaining optimal health. Hormone levels decline as we age and sometimes they need to be replenished in order for our bodies to function properly.” Markowitz, a registered personal trainer and licensed nutritionist who lives in Tampa Palms, opened Tampa Rejuvenation in 2005 with a team of physicians and other nutrition and exercise experts. His staff includes Johanna de Vryer, M.D., an internal medicine physician; Caroline Van Sant-Crowle, M.D., a family physician; and James K. Vogler, D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy), a Board-certified Ob/Gyn surgeon with 28 years of experience. In addition, Chris Young and Eddie Rodriguez are on-staff personal trainers and Niki Middlekauff is a registered dietitian, while Kelly Raposo is the clinic’s corporate nutrition coordinator. Markowitz says that by looking at each patient as an individual with unique needs and concerns, Tampa Rejuvenation does not focus on treating

They experi-

ence more joy and vitality and some have been able to wean off of previously prescribed medications (if cleared by their primary care physician).” Dr. Vogler says obesity has become an epidemic problem in America. “Being overweight is a precursor to a lot of the other medical conditions,” he says. “We are seeing multisymptom diseases in people such as car-

This includes all of the necessary lab testing and, based upon the results, our experts will recommend what is best for you. All of our programs are customized because everyone is different and has unique needs.”

A Miraculous Transformation Michelle Ruszin, who lives in Tampa Palms, says she has experienced a total transformation after visiting Tampa Rejuvenation. “Over the course of the past couple of years, I was just not taking care of myself, and I kept gaining weight,” says Ruszin. “And, I started noticing I was getting lazy. I came across Tampa Rejuvenation because they are located behind my bank and I was intrigued. I would see the sign and wonder what it

was, so one day, I decided to go in.” Ruszin met with Markowitz and had her free consultation. “After a complete evaluation, I started with HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced in pregnancy that is used for weigh loss) and lost 22 pounds. But, I lost more weight after I stopped the HCG, because I kept doing the workouts at Tampa Rejuvenation’s on-site gym and following the plan the nutritionist and dietitian put me on and I now have lost a total of 53 pounds.” Ruszin says she is proud that she lost the weight, but even more proud because her BMI went from 43 percent body fat to 22 percent. “My husband says that I look better now in my mid-30s than I did in my 20s,” she says. “I have recommended the program to so many people and have posted my results on Facebook. You can diet all you want, but if you don’t have the support of people — and the maintenance and motivation — you will fail. Brett is such a positive person and the support you get from him and his staff is remarkable.” Tampa Rejuvenation’s New Tampa location is at 15303 Amberly Dr., Suite B. The South Tampa location is at 2007 W. Swann Ave. For more information or to schedule a free consultation, call 558-9500 or visit TampaRejuvenation.com.

Education Updates Wharton’s Roberts Shines Yet Again At County Science Fair Once again, Wharton High senior Jasmine Roberts was named the best of the best of the county’s brightest students, taking top honors at the Hillsborough Regional Science & Engineering Fair, which was held in February at the Tampa Convention Center. For the third year in a row, Roberts, 17, not only won first place in her chosen category, Medicine & Health, but also Best of Fair, senior division, for her project entitled “Monocytic Gene Cell Therapy: Potential Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease.” In doing so, Roberts, who is the daughter of Justus and Minnie Roberts of Hunter’s Green, set three Hillsborough County records, her father said — the first Wharton student to win both first place and Best of Fair awards three consecutive times, the first Wharton student to represent the state of Florida at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair for three consecutive years, and the first student in the county to win both first place and Best of Fair awards five times in six years.

Wharton High senior Jasmine Roberts, aka “The Science Princess” Roberts also gained national attention, and an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and other national news programs, in 2006, when she was still at Benito Middle School, for her experiment which showed that ice machines in fast food restaurants contained more bacteria than the toilets in those same restaurants.

Since that time, Roberts has moved on to more lofty endeavors, most recently conducting research on Alzheimer’s disease at the University of South Florida’s Johnnie B. Byrd Alzherimer’s Institute. And, for this year’s Science Fair, Roberts conducted actual surgical experiments in which she injected cultured cells directly into the skulls of laborotory mice. Roberts will now go on to represent Hillsborough County at the Florida State Science competition and the Intel International Science Fair in Los Angeles in May. Besides Roberts, a number of other elementary, middle and senior high students from the public schools in our area also received honors at the county event. They include: Amrutha Ajjarapu, Benito, third place, junior chemistry; Ilenia Armstrong, Bartels Middle School, first place, junior environmental science; Lorenzo Armstrong, Wharton, second place, senior biochemistry; Amy Bauer, Wharton, second place, senior biochemistry; Michael Bell, Benito, first place, junior botany; Richa Bisht, Bartels, first place, junior chemistry; Ben Bryant, Liberty Middle School, third place, junior medicine & health science; Madison Eckelman, Liberty, third place, junior zoology; Gabriella Gonzalez, Bartels, first place, junior biochemistry; Cesar Maeda, Wharton,

Sports Briefs NTLL Alumni Kallie Shirling Receives Softball Scholarship In March, New Tampa resident Kallie Shirling, who is a standout on the Academy at the Lakes softball team, accepted a scholarship offer from Thomas University in Thomasville, GA. Shirling, who plays shortstop and second base and is an excellent hitter, signed a letter of intent at a ceremony before the entire student body at the AatL gymnasium. Probably the proudest person in attendance, however, was Jack Shirling, Kallie’s father, who also happens to be the coach of the Academy team. Jack said that Kallie, who started her career in the New Tampa Little League at age 6, is the first NTLL player to advance through every level of the program and then receive a college scholarship. “She’s a terrific kid,” Jack Shirling said. “She’s played up throughout her entire career, and she’s always helping me and the other players whenever she can. I’m really happy for her, but

Seasons Fresh Café — One-Of-A-Kind Flavors & A Unique Business By Gary Nager I have been a fan of Seasons Fresh Café, which is now located in the Palms Connection plaza on E. Bearss Ave (one block west of Bruce B. Downs Blvd.) since it opened in its original location in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza north of I-75 on BBD. This unique brainchild of the husband-and-wife team of Don and Cecilia Ball, Seasons Fresh Café is a still-evolving concept that will one day be New Tampa’s own organic restaurant/café, organic produce/farmer’s market, flower shop and wedding/special event party planning/catering business. Yes, I know that’s an awful lot of slashes (/), but that’s genuinely because Seasons Fresh is so much more than just another local restaurant. Currently open for lunch every day but Sunday and for breakfast on Saturday mornings, Seasons Fresh is an “organic fresh food café” which features fresh organic produce, a menu that changes with each season, daily chalkboard specials featuring everything from fresh sea scallops and seared ahi tuna to pork tenderloin sandwiches and lobster rolls and authentic (and truly delicious) Illy coffee and espresso drinks from Italy.
