Community Comes Together For Family Of Kids Killed In Fire By Michael Smith There is an old saying about how the worst of events can bring out the best in man’s nature, and if that is in fact the case, then the Wesley Chapel community has revealed its true nature in coming together to aid one local family in the wake of a devastating fire that claimed the lives of two young children. According to published reports, the fire broke out in the Loury Dr. mobile home of Anise Borque and James Moore at around 6:40 p.m. on March 15. The couple lived in the home with their four children — twins Walker and Hunter, 10, Mackenze, who was 9, and 8-year-old Austin. Hunter and Mackenze both suffered from cerebral palsy and were confined to wheelchairs. That evening, Anise was home with the children while James, who served as handyman for the trailer

park, was working in another unit four doors down from the family’s Mackenze and Hunter trailer. Freeman died in a fire Anise left at their family’s mobile the chilhome on March 15. dren to go and get James to tell him to come home for dinner, and although she was gone for just a few minutes, in that space of time, the deadly blaze broke out. Exactly how it started is still a mystery. But, Anise would later tell investigators that she was on her way back to the trailer when Walker ran up to her and told her that there was a fire. He and Austin, who had been playing in the yard, were safe, but there was no sign of Hunter and Mackenze, who had been inside a bedroom at the rear

At about that same time, Bill Heisler, who lives next door to the trailer park, says he was working in his yard when his dog started barking and he saw another neighbor running towards the mobile home community. Instinctively, he ran over, too, and as

they got closer, they saw the smoke and flames coming out of the family’s trailer, along with Anise, who was screaming that her babies were still inside. Heisler and other neighbors joined James in trying to get to the See “Family” on page 6.

Taste Of New Tampa Has Wesley Chapel Flavor Corrections An editorial by Gary Nager This weekend (Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10), the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) will host its fourth annual “Celebration of the Arts” at the Shops at Wiregrass mall. Although the “Celebration” has had other titles, this successful weekend-long event (and others) once again shows how far the community we call Wesley Chapel has progressed. There’s no doubt that both the Chamber and the Shops (see page 13) have been a big part of giving Wesley Chapel it’s identity and I give kudos to the mall’s upscale stores and impressive marketing department for always finding ways to draw people, not only from Wesley Chapel and New Tampa, but from Lutz, Land O’Lakes and areas even further from Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and S.R.s 54 and 56, with unique events. As unique events go, however, few in our area have ever equaled the success of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s annual Taste of New Tampa®, which was not only again tremendously successful in its 18th year on March 20, but also had a lot more of a Wesley Chapel edge to it than in most previous years (not including the years it was held inside the Meadow Pointe and Seven Oaks communities, but those were several years ago), as an estimated crowd of more than 3,000 people flocked to the football field at Paul R. Wharton High, which is located only Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News 15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa, FL 33647 Phone: (813) 910-2575 Fax: 910-2483 Website: WCNeighborhoodNews.com Adv. The under-construction Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel was one of the two major sponsors of this year’s Taste of New Tampa®. about a mile south of the Pasco County line on BBD. In addition to the closer-to-WesleyChapel locale, this year’s Taste’s two largest sponsors were the under-construc-

tion Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel and Sweetbay Supermarkets, which has a location on S.R. 54 and a store just south of County Line Rd. which attracts many “southern” Wesley Chapel (Seven Oaks, Meadow Pointe, Northwood, etc.) residents. In addition, many of the restaurants which participated in the event this year were either located in Wesley Chapel or very close to the Pasco line. At the New Tampa Chamber’s Taste wrapup meeting, which I attended, president Rachel Haviland talked about the glorious weather, the great layout provided by events committee chair Matt Palmer and also

In our last issue, we reported on a burglary in the Grand Hampton subdivision. Actually, however, the burglary took place in The Hammocks town home community, which is next to Grand Hampton on County Line Rd. in New Tampa. In our story about the New Tampa Chiropractic & Injury Center, we told you that the Center offers a $25 new patient consultation, which includes exam and X-rays (a $325 value). We left out that the patient and any other person responsible for payment has the right to refuse pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any payment or any other service, examination, or treatment which is performed as a result of and within 7 hours of responding to the free, discounted, or reduced fee, service, exam or treatment. noted that the Sweetbay at County Line Rd. was among the most successful Taste pre-sale locations. And, even though the store isn’t located in Wesley Chapel, many of the Chamber Board members acknowledged that a lot of the presales at that Sweetbay were likely Wesley Chapel residents.

Amazing Food

No matter where the attendees came from, however, few could argue that the food at this year’s Taste was See “Taste” on page 24.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Pasco Sheriff Bob White Announces His Retirement Pasco County Sheriff Bob White announced in March that he plans to retire from the office in order to spend more time with his family. According to a letter written by Sheriff White that was released on March 16, his retirement will become effective as of April 30. In the letter, the 60-year-old White says that he feels he has achieved his goals of making the Pasco Sheriff’s Department one of the best in the state and providing better service to the citizens of Pasco County. White also says in the letter that he had originally planned to run for a fourth term in office after his current term expires in 2012, but that his priorities had changed after the birth of his granddaughter 18 months ago. “I can’t give you my total commitment; therefore I can’t stay in office,” he wrote. Gov. Rick Scott will appoint a replacement for White, although it is not certain when that will happen. A Sheriff’s Office spokesman said that it will most likely be within the next couple of weeks. At our press time, nine candidates had filed applications for consideration by Scott, including several

4

News Briefs current and former employees of the department. Also, in what was considered by some to be a politically motivated move, Sen. Mike Fasano (R-New Port Richey) said that he might consider a run for the Sheriff’s Office in 2012. There also was speculation that White may be in line for an appointment by Scott to a new position in Tallahassee, although rules say that he will have to be retired for at least six months before accepting any new appointment.

Iorio Breaks Ground For New Area Fire Station In her last official visit to the New Tampa area as mayor, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio recently helped break ground for the city’s newest fire station and also cut the ribbon on an updated children’s play area at the city’s recreation center at the New Tampa Community Park. Iorio, along with outgoing Tampa City Council member Joseph Caetano and officials from Tampa Fire Rescue, turned over the first symbolic shovels of dirt at the new station, designated Station # 22, at the 8-acre site at 10871 Cross Creek Blvd. near Morris Bridge Rd. The city purchased the property for

$750,000 in 2007 and received a $1.6million American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA) grant in 2009 to pay for the construction of the new station. In addition, assistant fire chief Scott Ehlers said that the department also received an additional $3.9-million grant through the Former Tampa City Council member Joseph Caetano (3rd Federal Emergency from left) & Mayor Pam Iorio are joined by Tampa Fire ResManagement Agency cue (TFR) & other officials at the groundbreaking for TFR’s (FEMA)’s Staffing for Station No. 22 on Cross Creek Blvd. at Morris Bridge Rd. Capt. Lonnie Benniefield, who is assigned to Station #21, says that, depending upon the location of the call, the time of day and traffic conditions, it can take 18-20 minutes to respond to calls in some cases, especially if the firefighters from Station #21 are busy and assistance has to come from another station further away. “This new station will give us the capacity to get to most areas a lot quicker,” Benniefield said. Benniefield also noted that the new station will provide mutual assistance to Pasco County fire units in the Wesley Chapel area. The new 8,660-sq.-ft. station will be very similar in appearance to Station

#21, with three drive-through equipment bays flanked by work and living quarters for the firefighters, but its design also will include a number of environmentally-friendly features, such as high-efficiency lighting, solar-powered exterior lighting and water heating, an energy-efficient HVAC system and the use of recycled materials throughout, according to Michael Boutros, general manager of the Pillar Construction Group of Clermont, the company contracted by the city to build the new station. Boutros said that actual construction was to have commenced by April 1, and the contract calls for a 240-day construction schedule. — MS

“Family” Continued from page 1 children, but the fire was too hot for them to get in by the door, so they began tearing away at the wall of the trailer where the children were with whatever tools they could find, and even their bare hands. By the time they broke through, however, it was too late. Both of the children had succumbed to the smoke and fire. Heisler, who says he was so intent on trying to get to the children that he didn’t even notice that he had received burns himself, says that the members of the close-knit community immediately began rallying around the devastated family. “(Jimmy and Anise) are good people, and good people are hard to find,” he says. “Besides, we have children, and I know that if my house was on fire, Jimmy would have been trying to crawl through my window to get my kids just like I was trying to crawl through his window to get to his.” Heisler adds that another example of the good impression that the couple made on others was evident the day after the fire. Once again, he was in his yard when he saw a man drive up to the burnt-out trailer and get out of his car. Thinking at first that the man was just another rubbernecker, Heisler asked the

6

man if he could help him. That’s when the man told him that he had met Jimmy and Anise at a yard sale the couple had held about a month earlier. He said he had heard about the fire, but hoped it wasn’t the couple’s children who had been killed. “Then, he pulled out his wallet and said ‘All I have is $20, but I want to do something to help them,’” Heisler says. “He had only probably met Jimmy and Anise for a minute or two at the yard sale, but they made such an impression on him that he came back and gave me his only $20. That just goes to show what kind of people they are.” That $20 also became the foundation of a trust fund that Heisler and his wife Becky helped to set up to assist the family. To raise even more money, Heisler also helped to arrange a benefit concert at the Trinity Church of Wesley Chapel, where church members donated the proceeds from their weekly fish fry to the family. The church also held a yard sale to benefit the family last weekend, while the Tampa Palms Chik-fil-A restaurant donated the proceeds from a special “Spirit Night” to the family and another local bar, The Hawg Pound, also held a concert there. “At a time like this, you really can’t do anything to take the pain away, but you can show them Christ’s love,” Trinity pastor Dave Huff says.

Local Christian band Final Moment performs at the benefit concert for the Freeman family at Trinity Church of Wesley Chapel. Anyone who would like to assist the family, who is staying with relatives in the area, can make a donation at any local SunTrust bank branch. Just mention that the donation is for the “Bene-

fit Trust for the family of Mackenze and Hunter Freeman.” There also is a Facebook page in the children’s name, where information about other upcoming events will be posted.

Walkathons Raise Funds For ACS & Southeastern Guide Dogs By Michael Smith There are a lot of things a person can do to help out their favorite charity, like donating money or organizing fund raising events, but one of the easiest is something that most people already do every day — walking. For example, in the coming weeks, thousands of local residents will be putting on their walking shoes for the American Cancer Society (ACS)’s annual “Relay For Life,” an overnight walkathon. Every year, the Relay helps to raise money for and awareness of cancer-related issues, research and treatment, and this year there will be several Relay events held all around our area, including two in Wesley Chapel — at Wiregrass Ranch High on Friday, April 29, at Wesley Chapel High on Friday, May 6. Those events will both begin at 6 p.m. During the Relay, teams made up of people from local businesses, schools and other groups spend an entire evening taking laps around a track, while also participating in games, contests and other activities throughout the night. There also are special ceremonies for those who have fought cancer and won, and recognizing those who have lost the battle.

12

According to Lisa Stoessel, who is the ACS community representative for the Wiregrass and Wesley Chapel High Relay events, 10,000 people are expected to participate in Pasco County’s Relay events this year, and those events are expected to generate more than $500,000 for ACS programs, much of which will remain in the local area. As important as the money is, however, most people participate in the Relay for Life because they or someone they know has been affected by cancer. That is the case with Jen Gaete, who is captain of the team from Veterans Elementary, which is participating in this year’s Wiregrass Ranch Relay. Gaete says that she takes part in the Relay partly because her sister was successfully treated for ovarian cancer, and also in honor of her uncle, who died from brain cancer in 2006. “I do it for them, but I’m also inspired by all those other people that I’m able to help,” Gaete says. “It’s something I believe in, and it’s a passion that comes from the heart.” Also taking part in the Relay at Wiregrass Ranch High is senior Melinda Lu, who is organizing an effort to collect hair during the Relay for Locks of Love, which provides wigs and hairpieces for young cancer patients who

have lost their own hair to chemotherapy. Lu plans to donate her own hair at the event, and asks that anyone who would like to donate theirs to come to the Relay between 6 p.m.9 p.m. on April 29. You don’t have to give up your hair to support the Relay, however. Great Events Continue To Bring Crowds To Shops At Wiregrass! In addition to this weekend’s fourth annual Celebration of the Arts (see bottom of page 1), the Shops at Wiregrass mall is hosting plenty of other great events. Greg Lenners, general manager of The Shops at Wiregrass and Honorary Chamber Board member, one of twelve candidates running for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man of the Year, hosted an Inaugural Parade for Wesley Chapel down Paseo Dr. in the Shops at Wiregrass on March 12. To help Lenners raise money (the Man of the Year is the candidate who raises th most money), WCCC businesses paid a fee to display a banner or sign, have staff walk in the parade, or even have a float in the parade. (NoteLenners also recently hosted the first annual golf tournament to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on April 1 at Pebble Creek Golf Club). But, the fun at the mall doesn’t stop there. Also on April 2, The Shops had an incredible free “Cruisin’ at Wiregrass’ Custom & Classic Car & Truck Show, which also benefited the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and featured more than 200 vehicles, live music, great kids entertainment and an appearance by Jamie “Jake” Jacobs, the host of the “Tail Fins & Chrome” TV

show. That same day (and the first Saturday of every month) the mall was home to an awesome Fresh Market, with all types of produce, plants, foods and more. And, Thursdays through May, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., you can win a $500 shopping spree by attending the mall’s Spring Concert Series. Looking for more fun for the kids? For “Wiregrass Wednesdays” (April 13 & May 18, 10 a.m.), The Shops is scheduled to present Mr. Tommy, “A Masterful Children’s The first-ever Wesley Chapel parade was more than just a fun way to showcase the Entertainer,” guitarist, singer and storyShops at Wiregrass mall. Munchel Brothers Jewelry & Coin Exchange — Get Cash For

Munchel Brothers Jewelry & Coin Exchange is something of a combination of the two popular television shows — "Antiques Roadshow" and "Pawn Stars." Brothers Joe, Eddie and Chuck Munchel love that about their business, as they never know what might walk through the door. “It is sort of like those two shows in a sense,’’ Eddie Munchel says. “There have been some interesting and fascinating things that have come into our stores and unique items like those certainly can make for an exciting day in our business." Munchel Brothers Jewelry & Coin Exchange currently has three locations — Lakeland, Clermont and their newest store in the Shoppes at New Tampa of Wesley Chapel, next to PizzaMania. The brothers

14

worked in their family’s business for years and learned their respective crafts and trades. Eddie is a NAWCC-certified watchmaker and GIA-certified diamondologist; Joe also is GIA-accredited and a member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, while Chuck is both a GIA-accredited Jewelry Professional and a Master Jeweler. After lots of thought, the brothers decided to step out on their own and so far, things have been great. “Like any new business in today’s economy, nothing is easy,’’ Eddie says. “But, things have been going well and we will keep working harder to get to where we want to be.’’ Part of their plan for success starts with their customers. “We strive to make the experience a unique one for everyone who walks through

our doors,’’ Joe Munchel says. “We encourage people to never throw any coin, piece of jewelry or other collectible away without at least bringing it by for a free appraisal. The customer can decide then to keep their items, sell them to us, or sell them on the open market. No matter what they decide, they will leave knowing the true value of their items.’’ While the collectibles market fluctuates quite a bit, the gold market is at an all-time high and the Munchel brothers would love to make your day by offering you the highest price possible for your gold. “I see it all the time, where people will be cleaning out a relative’s possessions or maybe their own jewelry box, and they bring in their gold and silver thinking it might be worth a couple hundred dollars,’’ Eddie

Munchel says. “But, after we take a look at it, they are often shocked at how much their treasures are actually worth. Their couple of hundred dollars easily might be worth $2,500 or more in today’s market.’’ Unlike many jewelry and coin stores, the brothers also can appraise and purchase numerous other collectible items like historical documents, memorabilia from toys to sports and other celebrity or even political figure autographs, and Confederate currency. “We stress to people all the time that if they have something old, we would love to take a look at it,’’ Eddie says. “We don’t buy everything we appraise but we will be happy to give you a value for your items. We also do a lot of inhouse appraisals for folks who need things valued for insur-

ance purposes.’’ One of the strangest items they’ve seen — but valuable nonetheless — was a mourning necklace. “It was an early 1800s bracelet that was accented with human hair,’’ Eddie says. “It was kind of morbid but at the same time really fascinating to see one that well preserved and in good shape.’’ In order to keep current on market trends and values, the brothers occasionally host their own road shows throughout the state and also attend numerous trade shows. “The trade shows are important because they give us a better idea of the value of certain items,’’ Joe says. “We can do our research and go by our current sales but it’s very helpful to be on the road with several other vendors and see what

their idea of market value is for different items.’’ A long time Munchel Brothers customer is Lee Roth of Sunshine Growers in Lakeland. “I’ve known the Munchel family for over 20 years,’’ Roth said. “I have sent many friends and family members to their stores over the years to purchase engagement rings, coins or gifts and every single one of them was very satisfied. The boys are all very knowledgeable, helpful and considerate.’’ While the Munchel Brothers purchase a lot of items, they also want to remind customers of the large selection of retail inventory and unique items for sale in their stores, including the newest one in Wesley Chapel. “With Mothers Day and Fathers day coming up, we

encourage people to stop by one of our stores even if they aren’t in a selling market,’’ Chuck Munchel says. “We carry an excellent selection of jewelry, watches, coins and so on. If you don’t see exactly what you want, in most cases, we can design and create it for you. And, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to find that special Mom or Dad on your gift

list something that will go up in value one day. Most things people receive as gifts last for just a few years and then go to the curb for the garbage man to pick up. Our products are things that not only will provide instant pleasure but also possibly be worth more in a few years than they are today. Not many other stores can claim that.’’

Dr. Nicole Mitchell Can Help You Live Life With A (Healthy) Smile By Michael Smith Whether you realize it or not, the first thing many people notice about you is your smile. Of course, there are a plethora of products available these days that claim to whiten your teeth, freshen your breath and give you a dazzling smile, but the best way to a truly beautiful and healthy set of teeth is still a good relationship with a topnotch dental professional, like Dr. Nicole Mitchell, DMD. Dr. Mitchell, who opened her office in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza in New Tampa (only 2-3 miles south of the Pasco County line) in November, practices all aspects of general dentistry, such as exams, cleanings, extractions, fillings and more, but she also specializes in cosmetic procedures, too, including straightening, crowns, implants, bridges and veneers, all of which can help give you the movie star smile you’ve always wanted. Dr. Mitchell is a native of Connecticut who moved to Tampa while she was in junior high. She attended Gaither High and then the University of South Florida, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, before entering the U.S. Army and receiving her DMD degree and advanced training as a dentist while stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. After the Army, Mitchell returned to the Bay area, where she worked at a group practice for another five years before striking out on her own. A self-admitted “people person,” Mitchell says she originally took up dentistry because she liked the idea of combining her love of science with the opportunity to work with her hands while helping to improve her patients’ lives. “For me, it’s the perfect combination of art and science,” she says. “I love what I do, and I’d do it even if I

18

didn’t get paid for it.” While it may be the general dental work that is the meat and potatoes of any dental practice, Dr. Mitchell says, to her, the cosmetic aspect of her practice is, “the fun stuff.” “That’s because it is the most rewarding, for both the staff and the patients,” she explains. “Changing a person’s smile makes a pretty dramatic difference in the way they look, and how they feel about themselves, too.” However, Dr. Mitchell and her staff also emphasize the importance of regular maintenance and preventive care, too, “above and beyond what a lot of other dentists do.” That’s because a healthy mouth is not only important for a nice smile, but it can also help to prevent a variety of other health problems throughout the body. In fact, Dr. Mitchell says, one recent study even indicated that the plaque that builds up on teeth is the same as the plaque that builds up in arteries, and showed that there is a link between periodontal disease and hardening of the arteries, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness and other issues. Despite all the advantages of receiving regular dental care, however, many people are still afraid of going to the dentist. That’s not the case with Dr. Mitchell’s patients, however. Not only does she utilize the latest in painless dentistry, her staff also is the most genuinely friendly and caring group of professionals you could imagine — from administrative assistant Laura, who mans the front desk, to Kristen, the hygienist, and Michelle, who assists Dr. Mitchell and also is qualified to perform many procedures herself — you’ll feel at ease as soon as you walk through the door. That was certainly the experience of Debra Kitter, who was so happy with the results of her dental work

that she says she carries a stack of Dr. Mitchell’s business cards to hand out to family members and friends. “I’ve referred probably six people to Dr. Mitchell already, including my daughter and son-in-law,” Kitter says. “I never liked going to the dentist but, with her, you don’t even feel it. Buying A Home Is Still Within Reach, With The Right Help By Melissa O’Brien Over the past decade, the buying and selling of homes has transformed from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market. If you’re looking for a home, this can work in your favor, but it is still important to have someone there to help you navigate what can be a very complicated process. There definitely are deals out there and, if you have a credit score of 620 or higher and a steady income, you can qualify to purchase a home. But, it’s important to find the right person to look out for your best interests and guide you into making this important life decision. “Home buying is about educating clients about the process and negotiating for their needs,” says Phillip Paul, a real estate agent with Buyers Home Store, located on S.R. 54 in Lutz. “Right now, everyone knows that it is a buyer’s market. My job is to assess what my clients’ wants and needs are and to make the process of purchasing a home smooth and seamless.” Phil, who has worked in the real estate industry since 2004, says there are many great deals out there, especially in the Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’Lakes areas. Many of these deals can make it so that a homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments are less than what a

20

monthly rental payment would be. “There is a type of loan called a USDA (rural development) loan that is applicable in areas like Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’Lakes,” says Phil. Phillip Paul “It allows buyers to purchase a brand new home with no money down, with closing costs covered and no mortgage insurance. In most cases, people can end up in a home with a monthly mortgage that is less than a monthly rental. This loan is applicable in any area deemed rural as a result of the U.S. Census.” As you may know, the U.S. Census was retaken in 2010, so the results for these areas may be different (not rural) in the very near future. So, Phil says, “Now is the time to take advantage of this opportunity.” Phil adds that because of the high number of short sales and foreclosures in the area and across the country, many people are looking for deals in older homes. “People are looking at these options as a way of getting a great deal on a home,” he says. “While this may be true, clients need to realize that

short sales are anything but short and can take months, even years to close. There also may be bank issues with foreclosures that I can help homebuyers navigate, whether it’s the home not being up to par on inspection, titles not being cleared for closure or other important issues.” Phil began his career in real estate after graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Residential Housing Design and Property Management. He then obtained his Master’s degree in Architecture from Florida A& M University, also in Tallahassee. He moved to Tampa in 2004 and began working for Pulte Homes, where, in his first year, he sold $15.7 million in real estate properties. Then, in 2010, he began working for Buyers Home Store, a real estate agency with representation in Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee counties. “Working for Pulte, I was able to see the construction and builders side of things,” says Phil. “Like me, most of the people at Buyers Home Store have had experience in the construction/ building industry. That benefits our clients, because we all know the ‘sticks and the bricks.’ And, we can decipher the true value of a home for you.” Some of Phil’s awards include his being named the number one sales

associate in 2005 for Pulte Homes, which is affiliated with the National Association of Homebuilders, and company sales associate of the month. Phil is active in the Tampa Bay community, volunteering with The United Way of Tampa Bay, The Children’s Home, The Boys & Girls Club and the Hernando Chamber of Commerce. For Gino Maggio, working with Phil has made his family’s dreams come true. “It was time to buy a house,” says Maggio, who lived for years in an apartment with his wife and 5-year-old son. “I found Phil because I was reading a newspaper and saw his ad that compared prices for rentals versus owning a home. Our house is being built right now in Palm Cove in Wesley Chapel. Phil made the entire process very simple and made sure that we got the features we wanted from the builder. He looked out for me, when I could not be there; remembering what I wanted in the house and making sure it will be in the finished home.” Maggio says that Phil’s experience with working for a builder in the past served him well. “Buyers Home Store’s main speciality is dealing with all of the builders,” says Maggio, who owns the American Dream Barber Shop in Tampa. “They don’t make you feel like

you are dealing with a used car salesman, which is how you can feel sometimes when you go to the builder on your own. They deal with their client first and the builder second. Phil showed us what we needed to do to get what we wanted in our home. He also suggested Wesley Chapel to us because we could get all the things we wanted in a home (at a lower overall cost than the same size home in Tampa). He was so helpful and friendly that I feel like I’ve made a lifelong friend in Phil.” Elizabeth Layokun needed to find a home fast because her lease was up on her rent and she and her family did not want to renew their lease.

“Phil made the process easy and really took our urgency into consideration,” says Layokun. “I had been working with someone I knew before I met with Phil. It took that person months to give me information that Phil provided me in two days. We found a great place in Oak Creek in Wesley Chapel that had everything I needed and was the best deal. I would highly recommend Phil and already have recommended him to three of my friends. Phillip Paul is a licensed Realtor for Buyers Home Store, whose office is located at 24812 S.R. 54 in Lutz (just west of where S.R. 54 and S.R. 56 meet, west of I-75). He can be reached at 235-4952.

It may be time to get some answers as to why you are still gaining weight and feeling lethargic. “Now” just might be the right time to begin a compete change in lifestyle — a compete rejuvenation of yourself. Tampa Rejuvenation, a medical weight loss and wellness center located in the Palm Villa Centre next to the Shoppes of Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms, offers an integrated approach to health and well-being to enhance the quality of your life. Scientific studies indicate that the reality is that it may be even slight hormonal imbalances that are causing your weight battles and/or loss of energy. Tampa Rejuvenation’s team of experts is comprised of on-staff physicians, registered dieticians, clinical nutritionists, medical assistants and personal trainers who can identify, diagnose and create an individualized program to ensure each patient’s success. “What makes us different than other weight loss and wellness centers is that we are promoting a more complete

lifestyle change,” says Tampa Rejuvenation owner Brett Markowitz. “We combine the use of medicine, exercise and nutrition to create a customized program to get you healthy and to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many people don’t realize that proper hormone balance is crucial to maintaining optimal health. Hormone levels decline as we age and sometimes they need to be replenished in order for our bodies to function properly.” Markowitz, a registered personal trainer and licensed nutritionist who lives in Tampa Palms, opened Tampa Rejuvenation in 2005 with a team of physicians and other nutrition and exercise experts. His staff includes Johanna de Vryer, M.D., an internal medicine physician; Caroline Van Sant-Crowle, M.D., a family physician; and James K. Vogler, D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy), a Board-certified Ob/Gyn surgeon with 28 years of experience. In addition, Chris Young and Eddie Rodriguez are on-staff personal trainers and Niki Middlekauff is a registered dietitian, while Kelly Raposo is the clinic’s corporate nutrition coordinator. They experi-

Education Updates

Wesley Chapel Elementary Students Learn All About Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Riding bikes is a great way for families to have fun and spend time together outside. However, riding a bike can also be dangerous and many children are injured each year while riding their bikes. The good news, though, is that many of the worst injuries can be prevented by the use of a bicycle helmet. That was the lesson learned by students at Wesley Chapel Elementary (WCE) during a recent physical education class, when they were visited by Terri McConomy and Melissa Edlin from All Children’s Hospital, who head up the “Safe Routes to School” program for Pasco County. “If even one student remembers to wear their helmet, than I feel that what we are doing is successful,” Edlin says. “Injury prevention starts with education and this type of workshop is a lifelong lesson that students will remember.” “Safe Routes to School (SRTS)” is a federal program designed to make it safe, easy and convenient for chil-

dren in grades K-5 to walk and bicycle to school. The program encourages children to walk and/or ride their bikes to school in groups accompanied by adults, which gives them a chance to practice pedestrian and bicycle safety skills under adult supervision. According to the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, almost 400,000 children are treated for bike-related injuries every year in the U.S. Also, nine out of 10 bike riders who die in crashes are not wearing helmets. It has been found, however, that wearing a bike helmet can lower the risk of brain injury by up to 88 percent. Unfortunately, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida is the second worst state in the nation for bicycle fatalities. Florida had 125 fatal bike accidents, or 6.82 per million residents, in 2008, when the national average was only 2.35 per million. “It’s alarming to think that almost 400,000 kids end up in the hospital every year because of biking accidents,” says WCE physical educa-

tion specialist Chris Gorman. “We want our students to be safe when they are exercising and hope we can help them make good choices so that they will live long and healthy lives.” During their safety lesson, the students answered questions and participated in an egg drop demonstration, which simulated what can happen to your skull and brain if you take a fall wearing your helmet and the consequences if you are not wearing one. Second grader Gabby Popolillo loved the presentation. “The best part was when we got see what might happen to your head if you crash without

Some Great Shows Are Heading To Tampa Bay Area This Month! Metal Takes Center Stage In The Aluminum Show

Just as the weather is starting to heat up, so, too, is the Tampa Bay area entertainment scene, with dozens of outstanding local and national performers and events slated to open here over the next several weeks. Here is a sampling of some of the highlights:

Lady Gaga-Monster Ball Tour Saturday, April 16 - Since the release of her breakthrough smash, “Just Dance,” in 2008, New York City native Lady Gaga has become an international superstar, known almost as much for her off-the-wall costumes and publicity-seeking outlandish behavior as her admittedly catchy electronic dance music. Lady Gaga will bring her “Monster Ball Tour” to the St. Pete Times Forum (401 Channelside Dr.) for a show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $49.50-$175. For more information, visit SPTimesForum.com.

Tampa Is ‘The Final Frontier’ For Iron Maiden Sunday, April 17 - Although they have never received much in the way of mainstream radio airplay, England’s hard-rocking Iron Maiden has achieved remarkable success and influenced countless other bands over the past 30plus years. This gig, which begins at the St. Pete Times Forum (401 Channelside Dr.) at 8 p.m., is the last stop on their worldwide “The Final Frontier Tour” (in support of the album of the same name), and their first visit to

Iron Maiden will rock the St. Pete Times Forum on April 17. Tampa since 1991. Tickets cost $32.25- Ruth Eckerd Hall (1111 N. McMullenBooth Rd. in Clearwater). Tickets cost $55. For more information, visit SPTimesForum.com. $52-$92. For more information, visit RuthEckerdHall.com.

Chicago To Perform From Huge Library Of Hits

Thursday, April 21 - Although they would later evolve into staples of adult radio, with a string of hit ballads in the 1970s and ‘80s including ‘If You Leave Me Now,” “You’re The Inspiration” and “Hard Habit To Break,” Windy City natives Chicago started out as a hard-rocking experimental jam band known as the Chicago Transit Authority. Despite numerous personnel changes and other issues, the band has become one of the most successful in history, second only to the Beach Boys in terms of career chart-topping singles (21) and record sales (more than 100 million sold worldwide) among American bands. Chicago will perform at 8 p.m. at

Fans Still Swooning For Tom Jones, Even At 70

Friday, April 22 - One of the true legends of pop, Tom Jones has been making hits and female fans swoon since the 1960s, with a repertoire of Vegas-style hits like “It’s Not Unusual,” “What’s New Pussycats,” “Delilah” and a remake of the Prince hit “Kiss.” Now in his 70s, he has proven that he is still a vital force in the music industry, however, with the release of last year’s stripped-down album of Gospel and spiritual music, Praise and Blame. Tom Jones will perform at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater (1111 N. McMullen-Booth Rd.) at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $42-$103. For more info, visit RuthEckerdHall.com.

Saturday, April 23 - Combining elements of movement, dance and visual theater, similar to shows like Cirque du Soleil, the Blue Man Group, Stomp and others, but all connected by the central theme of aluminum, this show has become an international phenomenon. It makes its first stop in the Tampa Bay area with two shows at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater (1111 N. McMullen-Booth Rd.), beginning at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For ticket prices and other info, visit RuthEckerdHall.com.

Tim McGraw Returns With “Emotional Traffic” Tour Friday, April 29 - Country superstar Tim McGraw must like being on the road. After being named by Billboard magazine as country music’s number-one touring act of 2010, he and his Dancehall Doctors are back again with the “Emotional Traffic” tour, featuring special guests Luke Bryan and the Band Perry. In addition to a selection of his 32 No. 1 records, expect him to play his newest single, “Felt Good On My Lips.” The “Emotional Traffic” show will begin at 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre (4802 U.S. Hwy. 301 N. at the Florida State Fairgrounds) at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $38.25 & $85.95.
