‘Broadway Comes To Tampa’ Will Include Some Exciting News By Michael Smith The 12th annual “Broadway Comes to Tampa (BCTT)” show, which this year will again be held at Saddlebrook Resort & Spa in Wesley Chapel on Saturday, May 7, 6 p.m., gives local theater fans the unique opportunity to see some of Broadway’s biggest stars in a special one-night-only concert event. That’s pretty big news in itself, but this year, Doug Wall, artistic director and president of the New Tampa Players (NTP), which produces BCTT, promises to unveil some even bigger news at this year’s show — that the plan to build a community theater complex right here in New Tampa is finally moving forward. It’s not entirely official yet, Wall says, but he expects the official announcement to come on May 7 from BCTT special guest (and Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners District 5 member) Ken Hagan,
who is expected to report to BCTT fans and NTP supporters that the county has given final approval to dedicate land for the theater project. Hagan has long supported the proposal to bring a community theater to the New Tampa area, which will be built on property formerly owned by St. Joseph’s Hospital located across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from Hunter’s Green. The county purchased the pime 80-acre parcel to use it for retention ponds that are needed for the widening of BBD, but Wall said that once the ponds were mapped out, it was discovered that there were still about 14 acres of buildable land left at the site. So, Hillsborough County officials first had to transfer the land from the county’s transportation department to its parks and recreation department, and then Hagan pushed for NTP to be able to use some of that land for its longplanned theater complex. Wall, who was a member of the original committee formed in 2002 for
the purpose of establishing a “New Tampa Cultural Center,” as it was to be called at the time, says that it is very exciting to see almost a decade’s worth of Performers at this year’s “Broadway Comes to Tampa” concert event at Saddlebrook Resort on May 7 include (clockwise from effort finally comtop left): Rita Harvey, Neil Berg, Carter Calvert, William ing to fruition. Michals, Brad Little, Ted Louis Levy & Greg Wall. “It’s a great feeling to see some complex will be built in two phases, light at the end of the tunnel,” he says. with the first phase to include the 280Wall says that the theater will be 290-seat theater itself. Wall explains that the centerpiece of the new park, which 299 seats is the maximum number will also include walking trails and other See “BCTT” on page 7. passive amenities. He says the theater

A Mother’s Day Wish For My Mom & All Mothers An editorial by Gary Nager
A Mother’s Day Wish
For every Mom, and for my Mom Thank you Happy Mother’s Day — GN
For every Mom who has spent a sleepless night worrying about her kids when they go out For every Mom who has juggled a career and motherhood And for those who “only” worked at home For every Mom who has risked getting sick herself while nursing her children back to health For every Mom who has sat in 100degree heat, and/or bitter cold, to watch her child play soccer, baseball, football, swim, lead a cheer or dance For every Mom who has sent her child off to college ... or to war I thank you, just for being you And my one wish for every Mom Is that you will be appreciated Honored Remembered And given the credit and respect you deserve Not just on Mother’s Day, but EVERY day Even though children will ALWAYS go out Get sick And sadly, be seriously injured and sometimes killed Whether by drunk drivers or roadside bombs The one constant for the vast majority of those children Is a loving Mother Who has always held their hand Told them it would be O.K. And has been there for them, Even when things weren’t O.K.
Even though Mother’s Day is a “holiday” that was invented by a greeting card company, it’s a great day to reflect on how important moms are in our lives. My mother, Marilyn Nager, lives in Sarasota and owns a little boutique/gift shop in downtown Sarasota called, surprisingly enough, Marilyn’s, which has more vintage and antique costume jewelry, as well as hats, purses, shoes and accessories, packed (albeit in perfect order) into one small space than any store its size I’ve ever seen. It’s an amazing place for finding the perfect gift for any mom on your list (shameless plug). But, this isn’t about my Mom’s store, it’s about the woman who personally picked out and purchased every pair of earrings and Bakelite bracelet in that quaint little shop. Creating order out of chaos, always knowing what accessory to wear with any outfit and even knowing how to decorate any room are among my Mom’s many gifts. She’s also a far better salesperson than I’ll ever be, always knowing how to strike the perfect balance between giving people their space while still making sure she always makes the sale. My Mom also is the type of person who will do anything for the people she cares about. She’s been my constant supporter, both professionally and personally, since the day I was born. But, most people expect their

Mom to be in their corner. On the other hand, my Mom has been there, not just for me and my sister Bonnie and every other member of her family, but also for every friend who’s ever needed her. Mom may admit to not being a great driver, but she’ll go out of her way to not only visit a sick friend in the hospital, but bring them food, pick up their mail and perform other tasks they may be in no condition to take care of themselves — sometimes every day — even though she knows some of those friends may never reciprocate, never do the same for her. And, if you tell her something in confidence, she’ll never betray you. In other words,
she’s not just a terrific Mom, she’s an amazing friend. And I’m lucky to have had her as both my entire life. Thanks, Mom. I love you. And, speaking of Mother’s Day, a lot of our dining, shopping, salon and spa advertisers in this issue have great deals on Mother’s Day gift ideas that we hope you will not only utilize, but also mention to them that you saw their ad in the Neighborhood News! And, if you’re planning a visit to Sarasota, check out Marilyn’s (1269 1st St.; 941-544-7987).

Shoplifter Arrested In Tampa Palms Following Brief Car Chase By Michael Smith After being busted with a Dustbuster©, (one of seven handheld vacuum cleaners that he was allegedly trying to steal), a Wesley Chapel man managed to elude police until his getaway vehicle suffered a broken axle in Tampa Palms. The incident began at around 10:30 a.m. on April 6, when George White, Jr., 39, of 1260 Nashville Dr. in Wesley Chapel, was stopped by store personnel at the Walmart Supercenter at 19910 Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. When asked about a receipt for the five vacuum cleaners he had in a shopping cart, White said that he hadn’t been given one. He returned into the store, supposedly to check with the cashier about getting a receipt, but instead, he went into a restroom and was subsequently spotted attempting to leave the store by another entrance,
6
carrying two other vacuum cleaners. A store security officer attempted to take White into custody, but he got away from her and fled the scene, but the store George employees were able to provide a description of White, Jr. his car, a white Chevy Impala, along with its license number, to police. A few minutes later, a Tampa Police officer pulled over a car matching the description at Dona Michelle Dr. and BBD, but it turned out to be the wrong vehicle. White was then seen by another officer heading southbound on BBD, and the officer caught up with the suspect in the parking lot at the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center. White drove around to the rear of
the plaza and tried to get away again, but by that time, at least half a dozen marked and unmarked police vehicles had flooded the scene, along with the TPD helicopter. They quickly converged upon White’s vehicle after he broke its front axle by hitting a curb as he attempted to make the turn from Tampa Palms Blvd. onto southbound Bruce B. Downs. According to his TPD arrest report, White left his car after he wrecked it and briefly struggled with officers, screaming that he didn’t want
to go to jail. After his arrest, White, who was charged with grand theft (the total value of the seven vacuum cleaners was a little more than $344), resisting a merchant with force, reckless driving and no valid driver’s license, allegedly admitted to officers that he often stole items from Walmart and later returned them for cash. At our press time, White was being held in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond because he was still on probation after having been released from prison last December.

“BCTT” Continued from page 1 of seats that a theater can have and still be classified as a “small community theater” for the purposes of paying royalties on scripts and rent for props and other materials. Once the theater is built, the second phase of the project will add classrooms, rehearsal space, offices and other features. Wall says he was supposed to meet with architects last week to go over how much money NTP will need to raise to make the theater a reality, after which the group will begin a capital fund-raising campaign in earnest. The first architectural concept drawings for the theater will be on display at BCTT.
A Star-Spangled Lineup Speaking of which, Wall says that the show will feature all of the glitz and glamour that BCTT fans have come to expect over the years, along with a few added surprises. As always, the line-up of guest performers is second to none, featuring several who have lent their talents to the BCTT shows in years past, such as Wall’s cousin and Broadway composer Neil Berg, Berg’s wife Rita Harvey (who has starred in many of Broadway’s favorite leading roles, including Christine Daee in “Phantom of the Opera”) and Doug’s brother,
Greg Wall, on the saxophone. There also are some first-time BCTT performers on the bill, including dancer, choreographer and actor Ted Louis Levy, with whom Wall compares favorably with the likes of Gregory Hines and Ben Vereen and who has worked with modern dancers such as Savion Glover; William Michals, who Wall says is one of the world’s best baritones; and jazz vocalist and actor Carter Calvert, who has made numerous appearances in major Broadway productions and in movies and TV. Rounding out the cast is Brad Little, best known for his long-running performance as the title character in “Phantom.” “Broadway Comes To Tampa” will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, which cost $175 per person or $1,750 for a table for 10, are always a hot commodity, but are available through the official show website, Broadway ComesToTampa.com. If the show sells out by the time this issue reaches mailboxes, Wall says he will do his best to accommodate late ticket requests. Call 781-1171. The website also includes info about a raffle for an all-expense-paid trip for two to New York City, including airfare, hotel, tickets for two Broadway shows and more. The winner will be announced at BCTT show, but you need not be present to win.

Community Comes Together For Family Of Kids Killed In Fire By Michael Smith There is an old saying about how the worst of events can bring out the best in man’s nature, and if that is in fact the case, then the Wesley Chapel community has revealed its true nature in coming together to aid one local family in the wake of a devastating fire that claimed the lives of two young children. According to published reports, the fire broke out in the Loury Dr. mobile home of Anise Borque and James Moore at around 6:40 p.m. on March 15. The couple lived in the home with their four children — twins Walker and Hunter, 10, Mackenze, who was 9, and 8-year-old Austin. Hunter and Mackenze both suffered from cerebral palsy and were confined to wheelchairs. That evening, Anise was home with the children while James, who served as handyman for the trailer park, was working in another unit four doors down from the family’s trailer. Anise left the children to go and get James to tell him to come home for dinner, and although she was gone for just a few minutes, in that space of time, the deadly blaze broke out. Exactly how it started is still a mystery. But, Anise would later tell investigators that she was on her way back to the trailer when Walker ran up to her and told her that there was a fire. He and Austin, who had been playing in the yard, were safe, but there was no sign of Hunter and Mackenze, who had been inside a bedroom at the rear of the mobile home. At about that same time, Bill Heisler, who lives next door to the trailer park, says he was working in his yard when his dog started barking and he saw another neighbor running towards the mobile home community. Instinctively, he ran over, too, and as they got closer, they saw the smoke and flames coming out of the family’s
8
trailer, along with Anise, who was screaming that her babies were still inside. Heisler Mackenze and Hunter and other Freeman died in a fire neighbors at their family’s mobile joined James home on March 15. in trying to get to the children, but the fire was too hot for them to get in by the door, so they began tearing away at the wall of the trailer where the children were with whatever tools they could find, and even their bare hands. By the time they broke through, however, it was too late. Both children had succumbed to the smoke and fire. Heisler, who says he was so intent on trying to get to the children that he didn’t even notice that he had received burns himself, says that the members of the close-knit community immediately began rallying around the devastated family. “(Jimmy and Anise) are good people, and good people are hard to find,” he says. “Besides, we have children, and I know that if my house was on fire, Jimmy would have been trying to crawl through my window to get my kids just like I was trying to crawl through his window to get to his.” Heisler adds that another example of the good impression that the couple made on others was evident the day after the fire, when he saw a man drive up to the burnt-out trailer and get out of his car. Thinking at first that the man was just another rubbernecker, Heisler asked if he could help him. That’s when the man told him that he had met Jimmy and Anise at a yard sale the couple had held about a month earlier. He said he had heard about the fire, but hoped it wasn’t the couple’s children who had been killed. “Then, he pulled out his wallet and said ‘All I have is $20, but I want
Pastor Dave Huff of Trinity Church of Wesley Chapel introduces local Christian rock band Final Moment at a benefit concert for the Freeman family. to do something to help them,’” Heisler says. “He had only probably met Jimmy and Anise for a minute or two at the yard sale, but they made such an impression on him that he came back and gave me his only $20. That just goes to show what kind of people they are.” That $20 also became the foundation of a trust fund that Heisler and his wife Becky helped to set up to assist the family. To raise even more money, Heisler also helped to arrange a benefit concert at the Trinity Church of Wesley Chapel, where church members donated the proceeds from their weekly fish fry to the family. The church also held a yard sale to benefit the fam-
ily, while the Tampa Palms Chik-fil-A restaurant donated the proceeds from a special “Spirit Night” to the family and another local bar, The Hawg Pound, also held a concert there. “At a time like this, you really can’t do anything to take the pain away, but you can show them Christ’s love,” Trinity pastor Dave Huff says. To assist the family, you can make a donation at any local SunTrust Bank branch. Mention that the donation is for the “Benefit Trust for the Family of Mackenze & Hunter Freeman.” There also is a Facebook page in the children’s name, where info about other upcoming events will be posted.

New Tampa Players Are Searching For The Next ‘Annie’ The New Tampa Players (NTP) community theater group is looking for the area’s next child star (and other performers) for its upcoming production of “Annie,” the Broadway favorite about the little orphaned girl with a heart of gold. Auditions will be held SaturdayMonday, April 30-May2, at the University Area Community Complex (14013 N. 22nd St., between Bearss and Fletcher Aves.). The Saturday auditions will be open to youth performers only, ages 6-14, who will be trying out for the roles of Annie and other characters. NTP artistic director Doug Wall, who will be directing “Annie,” says that in addition to the lead role, there also will be primary roles for six girls (who will be playing the main orphans), as well as a large number of secondary orphan characters. For the lead role, one girl will be selected to play Annie in most of the shows, which will be presented August 12-21, but there also will be one understudy selected who is guaranteed to perform in at least one of
the shows and possibly more. The group also will select understudies for the six main orphan characters. Meanwhile, there also are parts for about a dozen each adult men and women, so the auditions on Sunday and Monday will be open to both youth and adult performers. Those wishing to audition should be prepared to sing 16 bars of any show tune (from any show except for “Annie”), and should have sheet music for their song, as an accompanist and/or music will be provided. They should also wear comfortable clothing and bring a headshot and resume, if they have one. For more info, call 386-6687 or visit NewTampaPlayers.org.-MS

New Tampa’s Relay For Life Set For May 6 At Bartels MS New Tampa Relay, about 90 percent, in fact, stays in the local community where it is used for treatment, research, education and other programs and services that the ACS offers to patients and their families. There is still time to support or join one of the established teams, or even put together a team of your own to take part in the New Tampa Relay for Life. For more info on how to do so, visit RelayForLife. org/newtampafl. Or, simply come out and show your support at the event itself. We’ll see you there!
By Michael Smith In about two weeks, hundreds of New Tampa-area residents will show their support for the American Cancer Society (ACS) by participating in the organization’s largest single annual fund raiser, the Relay for Life. This year’s New Tampa Relay for Life will be held at a new location, Bartels Middle School (9020 Imperial Oak Blvd.) in the Live Oak Preserve subdivision. The festivities will get under way at 6 p.m., and although each Relay is an individual event, each also has some features in common. For example, following the opening ceremonies, every Relay begins with cancer survivors and their family members taking the first lap around the track. Then, they are joined by members from the rest of the participating teams, who are required to have at least one person walking around the track throughout the evening, until the closing ceremonies are held the following morning. Once the sun sets, there also is a special luminaria event at each Relay, where candles are lit to memorialize those who have succumbed to cancer. There also are usually a variety of other fun activities and events going on all night long, too, as the teams continue to compete to see which can raise the most money for the event. At our press time, there were a total of 35 teams signed up to take part in the New Tampa Relay. Together, they had already raised more than $55,000, led by the “Freedom From Cancer” team from Freedom High, which already had raised more than $10,000 by itself. Perhaps the most hearfelt donation for the New Tampa Relay, however, came from a pair of sisters, Jackie and Jillian Love. When the Love sisters had their joint birthday party earlier

Jillian is too young, of course, to recognize the importance of the event, but she enjoys taking part, too, Dominique says. Such dedication to the Relay cause isn’t really that unusual, though, because cancer has touched so many lives, says New Tampa Relay chair Thomas Gruber, who held a Super Bowl party and Chili Cook-Off Contest at his home in Tampa Palms to raise money for the New Tampa Relay. “Relay is a unique opportunity for our community to come together to

Charles Jewelers Has Built A Reputation Of Trust And Quality By Michael Smith When it comes to spending your hard-earned money, there are several instances where a strong level of trust is vital to building a good relationship between you and the people you do business with. Doctors and dentists come immediately to mind, as does your hair stylist (think about it), and then there’s your jewelry professional. These days especially, when the airwaves are full of ads from people in hotel rooms who want to buy your gold, how do you know who to trust? The friendly and expert staff at Charles Jewelers, located in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center, is a good place to start. Owner Jackie Caramatti-Tuozzo opened the business more than a dozen years ago, and she says trust between her and the customers who frequent the cozy little shop is one of the main reasons why they’ve been so successful. “In jewelry, it’s all about trust, and we’ve built our store’s reputation on trust,” Tuozzo says. One thing you can trust is that when you shop at Charles Jewelers, you’ll find a great selection of highquality rings, necklaces, bracelets, ear-

Tuozzo says that the store sees a pretty steady market for engagement and wedding bands, especially in the spring and summer months, but the steadily rising price of gold has led some customers to look for alternatives. As a result, one of the hottest jewelry lines in the world right now is made by the Pandora company. The company’s products include rings, necklaces, earrings and more, but the centerpiece of the collection is the signature charm bracelets, which can be
customized with hundreds of unique charms that come in sterling silver, 14k gold, Murano glass and precious gemstones. All of the Pandora items are handcrafted in a special factory in Thailand, and the jewelry makers receive three years of special training before they can work there, Caramatti-Tuozzo says. “People like them because Pandora charm bracelts at Charles Jewelevery little charm is unique, and every charm will mean something ers are beautiful and customizable. special to the woman who wears the bands to match your mood or it,” she says. your wardrobe,” Caramatti-Tuozzo Another line that has gained in says. popularity with the rising cost of gold At the same time, however, is Belle ´Etoile, which is crafted from Charles Jewelers is offering discounted sterling silver and enamel and other prices on its remaining inventory of materials. Dr. Peggy Sterling Celebrating 15 Years Of Sterling Eye Care By Gary Nager I have known Board-certified optometrist Dr. Peggy Sterling, O.D. (Doctor of Optometry), since she opened her first location in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms way back in 1996. In the 15 years since then, Dr. Sterling has been providing quality eye exams, glasses and contact lenses for the residents of New Tampa and Wesley Chapel. The secret to her long-term success, however, goes beyond her years of experience and her expertise. Peggy is more like a trusted friend than merely a health care professional to her patients, many of whom have followed her from one location to the next. “My 15 years of loyalty to my patients definitely has helped them be just as loyal to me,” says Dr. Sterling, who earned her O.D. degree from Nova Southeastern University in South Florida. “And I will always show my appreciation for that loyalty.” Her current office, in the Brookside Professional Park off S.R. 54 (just east of the entrance to Saddlebrook Resort), is several miles north of both her original location in Tampa Palms and her second office locale in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza across from Hunter’s Green, but Peggy

says that many of her patients at that time lived in Wesley Chapel anyway. “When people get the quality care and service they expect,” she says, “they tend to find and stay with you.” Dr. Sterling hasn't always been an optometrist. Her first health care career was as a registered nurse (R.N.) and she says that prior experience has served her well as an optometrist. "I was a trauma nurse," she says. "I worked in the intensive care unit at Tampa General Hospital and managed the department at Brandon Regional Hospital. That background has allowed me to be a better diagnostician as an optometrist because I can look beyond the eyeballs to see underlying issues other optometrists might miss.” Dr. Sterling’s assistant Patricia is still with her after all these years and Peggy says, “Patricia definitely helps our patients, both children and adults, feel right at home. We pride ourselves on being both friendly and totally professional.” Patricia adds, “Not all optometrists handle children and adults, but Peggy makes everyone feel right at home. She’s seen a lot of the kids in this area grow into adults — and a lot of them are actually still with us.” “We provide all primary care
optometry services,” says Dr. Sterling, who has three children of her own and lives in the area, where she loves to pamper her two horses and two YorkDr. Peggy Sterling shire terriers, “including diagnosing ocular disease,
handling hard-to-fit contact lenses, prescription sunglasses and all types of lenses for eyeglasses.” The immaculate, comfortable office also has a wide variety of designer frames, so call for an appointment today. Boca Bargoons Can Help Give Your Home A Designer Look! By Melissa O’Brien If you’ve never been to Boca Bargoons, the fabric and design center located on E. Hillsborough Ave., near I-275, less than 20 minutes from Tampa Palms), the first thing that will amaze you is the thousands of highquality fabric bolts in all colors and textures that almost graze the ceiling throughout the store. Some 7,000 different bolts, in fact, give customers so many creative choices that it makes it next to impossible to decide which fabric to choose. What may astound you even more, however, are the fantastic prices on the fabrics and the many accessories and services that Boca Bargoons has to offer. “We are a discounted, high-end fabric store,” says Deborah Castellano, an interior designer and design consultant with Boca Bargoons. “Whether you want to reupholster your couch or create new draperies for your home, you can find fabric, furniture and many accessories, all at reasonable prices, right here. Our showroom is filled to the brim with tapestries, silks, prints, upholstery and velvets, all exclusively for decorating your home.” Not only that, but if you do have trouble deciding which one of the thousand of fabrics to choose from, Deborah and her team from Boca Bargoons’ in-house Hemingway Design Center can offer you advice. “Our design center is especially for our customers,” says Deborah. “We offer in-store and at-home consultations (trips to homes are charged a standard industry fee). you make the best choices for your home.” Castellano says that Boca Bargoons also offers embellishments like tassels for pillows, trim, the pillows themselves and basically anything that can be fabricated. The store even offers window treatment hardware, as well as a complete selection of new furniture that you can have re-upholstered to suit your decor. “The furniture is amazing,” says Deborah. “It is made with ‘spring down’ cushions. The springs give the upholstered furniture support, while the blendown gives a luxurious surface feel. So, they feel like down pillows, but always spring back up and keep their shape.” Boca Bargoons also specializes in sourcing fabric from the finest mills throughout the world and bringing them to customers at discount prices. The store’s fabrics include such names as Scalamandre, Brunschwig & Fils, Bennison, Robert Allen, Ralph Lauren and other world-class fabrics that are renowned among the top designers of the world. If you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for among those 7,000 bolts of fabric, there is a special section of the 10,000-sq.-ft. showroom where you can sit down, peruse special order books and find something just for you. “The owners of the company select all the fabrics,” says Deborah. “They only want to bring in fabrics that are high quality and unique. You can go to other fabric places and find the same patterns pretty much everywhere, but here you can find some things you’ve never seen before. What’s best is that we have so much of it — and it’s all in stock, so you don’t have to pay shipping or wait for it. You can take a sample home to see if it works with your project and our pricing is so reasonable!”

Buying A Home Is Still Within Reach, With The Right Help By Melissa O’Brien Over the past decade, the buying and selling of homes has transformed from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market. If you’re looking for a home, this can work in your favor, but it is still important to have someone there to help you navigate what can be a very complicated process. There definitely are deals out there and, if you have a credit score of 620 or higher and a steady income, you can qualify to purchase a home. But, it’s important to find the right person to look out for your best interests and guide you into making this important life decision. “Home buying is about educating clients about the process and negotiating for their needs,” says Phillipe Paul, a real estate agent with Buyers Home Store, located on S.R. 54 in Lutz. “Right now, everyone knows that it is a buyer’s market. My job is to assess what my clients’ wants and needs are and to make the process of purchasing a home smooth and seamless.” Phil, who has worked in the real estate industry since 2004, says there are many great deals out there, especially in the Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’Lakes areas. Many of these deals can make it so that a homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments are less than what a
26
monthly rental payment would be. “There is a type of loan called a USDA (rural development) loan that is applicable in areas like Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’Lakes,” says Phil. Phillipe Paul “It allows buyers to purchase a brand new home with no money down, with closing costs covered and no mortgage insurance. In most cases, people can end up in a home with a monthly mortgage that is less than a monthly rental. This loan is applicable in any area deemed rural as a result of the U.S. Census.” As you may know, the U.S. Census was retaken in 2010, so the results for these areas may be different (not rural) in the very near future. So, Phil says, “Now is the time to take advantage of this opportunity.” Phil adds that because of the high number of short sales and foreclosures in the area and across the country, many people are looking for deals in older homes. “People are looking at these options as a way of getting a great deal on a home,” he says. “While this may be true, clients need to realize that
short sales are anything but short and can take months, even years to close. There also may be bank issues with foreclosures that I can help homebuyers navigate, whether it’s the home not being up to par on inspection, titles not being cleared for closure or other important issues.” Phil began his career in real estate after graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Residential Housing Design and Property Management. He then obtained his Master’s degree in Architecture from Florida A& M University, also in Tallahassee. He moved to Tampa in 2004 and began working for Pulte Homes, where, in his first year, he sold $15.7 million in real estate properties. Then, in 2010, he began working for Buyers Home Store, a real estate agency with representation in Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee counties. “Working for Pulte, I was able to see the construction and builders side of things,” says Phil. “Like me, most of the people at Buyers Home Store have had experience in the construction/ building industry. That benefits our clients, because we all know the ‘sticks and the bricks.’ And, we can decipher the true value of a home for you.” Some of Phil’s awards include his being named the number one sales
associate in 2005 for Pulte Homes, which is affiliated with the National Association of Homebuilders, and company sales associate of the month. Phil is active in the Tampa Bay community, volunteering with The United Way of Tampa Bay, The Children’s Home, The Boys & Girls Club and the Hernando Chamber of Commerce. For Gino Maggio, working with Phil has made his family’s dreams come true. “It was time to buy a house,” says Maggio, who lived for years in an apartment with his wife and 5-year-old son. “I found Phil because I was reading a newspaper and saw his ad that compared prices for rentals versus owning a home. Our house is being built right now in Palm Cove in Wesley Chapel. Phil made the entire process very simple and made sure that we got the features we wanted from the builder. He looked out for me, when I could not be there; remembering what I wanted in the house and making sure it will be in the finished home.” Maggio says that Phil’s experience with working for a builder in the past served him well. “Buyers Home Store’s main speciality is dealing with all of the builders,” says Maggio, who owns the American Dream Barber Shop in Tampa. “They don’t make you feel like

you are dealing with a used car salesman, which is how you can feel sometimes when you go to the builder on your own. They deal with their client first and the builder second. Phil showed us what we needed to do to get what we wanted in our home. He also suggested Wesley Chapel to us because we could get all the things we wanted in a home (at a lower overall cost than the same size home in Tampa). He was so helpful and friendly that I feel like I’ve made a lifelong friend in Phil.” Elizabeth Layokun needed to find a home fast because her lease was up on her rent and she and her family did not want to renew their lease.
“Phil made the process easy and really took our urgency into consideration,” says Layokun. “I had been working with someone I knew before I met with Phil. It took that person months to give me information that Phil provided me in two days. We found a great place in Oak Creek in Wesley Chapel that had everything I needed and was the best deal. I would highly recommend Phil and already have recommended him to three of my friends. Phillipe Paul is a licensed Realtor for Buyers Home Store, whose office is located at 24812 S.R. 54 in Lutz (just west of where S.R. 54 and S.R. 56 meet, west of I-75). He can be reached at 235-4952.

Establish Your Online Identity With The Web Decorators By Michael Smith If you’re a business owner in 2011, it’s practically a given that you have to have a website. While there are some technological holdouts who still prefer to do business “the old-fashioned way,” and forego having a website, more and more entrepreneurs are beginning to realize that in order to get the word out about their business or service, attract more customers, and generally maximize their bottom line, they have to have an online presence. That’s because these days, when people are in the market for a carpet cleaner, or a doctor or dentist, their search usually begins on the Internet The only problem is that there are literally billions of websites out there, so the key for business owners is having a website that will allow them to stand out from the crowd. And yes, there are a lot of do-ityourself websites and software programs that can guide anyone through the process of building a basic website, or even one with all the latest bells and whistles, if that’s what they want. But the thing to remember is that a website will be the first, and possibly only, contact that you will have with your poten-
32
tial customers. It’s the virtual representation of you and your company, after all, and, just like when you are meeting faceto-face, a positive first impression can Cindy Kelly of The Web Decorators make the difference between making a sale or not. “Your website should be the best salesperson your company has,” says Cindy Kelly, owner of The Web Decorators, an Internet development and service agency which recently moved from its former location at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. at Bearss Ave. to brand new digs in the Westchase area. The company, which Kelly started in 2005, has created websites for a wide variety of local businesses, ranging from small, home-based startups to large franchise operations. Creating the website, however, is only the first step, Kelly says. Once you’ve got a design that you like, with the features that you need, the key then becomes making your site stand out in a sea of choices. Simply having a website
is like advertising your yard sale by putting up signs around your neighborhood, as opposed to conducting a multimedia marketing campaign. In that case, the only people who will see one of your signs are those who happen to be driving down your street, but with a focused and well-directed Internet marketing plan, your base of potential customers will increase exponentially. At the heart of attracting attention to a website is a process known as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. When someone sets out to find a particular business on the Internet, they use what is called an Internet search engine (usually one of the “big three” — Google, Yahoo, or Bing — which Kelly says account for more than 90 percent of all searches). The search engine goes through all of the websites in its database that contain the search term or phrase that was entered, and creates a list of choices, prioritized by the sites that match that term most closely. (Most search engines also will offer prime space on the results list, for a fee, as well as a list of “sponsored,” or paid-for site ads, along one side of the page). If you don’t do anything to boost your visibility, that’s what is known as organic SEO, in which you take your chances that people will type in the right
phrase that will lead them to your business. The problem with that is, if you happen to be in a popular industry, your site may not be among the first 10, 20, or even more, sites that show up in the results list. That’s where the SEO service offered by companies like The Web Decorators comes into play. Kelly says that the actual process of searching through so many thousands of websites in just a few seconds is guided by complicated mathematical algorithms that change constantly, but there are ways to manipulate the process to bring more visitors to your site. “People think optimization is this magic thing that happens, but it’s not,” Kelly says. “It’s a matter of using key phrases to get specific results.” Kelly says the process of keeping up with the changes in technology make SEO an incredibly time-consuming undertaking, but it is vitally important to any business owner. “As a business owner,” Kelly says. “you want to get customers out of it, so ideally, everything is geared to getting your website visitors to take the next step—a phone call or an appointment.”
Service Is Still The Key
Kelly says that ongoing service is

offering new products every month, but you do want to give your customers something new to see when they visit that’s valuable to them, something to keep them coming back to the site.” A weblog, or “blog,” is a good way to do that, and also can be included in the SEO process to increase your site’s visits even more, as can every page on the site. Fit 4 Life Celebrating Ten Years Of Making New Tampa Healthier By Gary Nager I have known Fit 4 Life Personal Training & Physical Therapy owner Travis Monday since he first opened his original Tampa Palms location just about ten years ago. Since then, Fit 4 Life has moved a two more times, including to its current (and recently expanded) location in the Tampa Palms Professional Center off Commerce Park Blvd. (behind USAA Insurance), but I am proud to say that not only has Travis been my friend, but he and his amazing staff also have been my inspiration and encouragement to lose weight when I was nearly 50 pounds heavier. He also has been a wonderful advertiser who continues to grow his business, despite the economy. Today, even though Travis and his wife (and fellow Certified Personal Trainer) Fiona have a baby of their own, they continue to nurture and even expand their company’s already outstanding menu of services. “Yes, we do personal training for both increasing muscle and reducing fat,” Travis says, “but we’re about so much more than just weight loss. Our main goal continues to be to help our clients live healthier lives, more than just about anything else.” To that end, Travis says that even if people who visit Fit 4 Life decide not to utilize the facility’s outstanding services, he hopes they will remember and try to focus on the three most impor-
tant principles of better health: 1. Don’t smoke. 2. Learn to exercise properly and how to incorporate some form of strength training (weight lifting, pushups, etc.) into your exercise regimen. Massage Therapist Natasha Palmer Provides ‘Zen In Your Den’ By Gary Nager Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Natasha Palmer says she never studied Zen Buddhism with the Dalai Lama. In fact, a creative friend of hers is the one who came up with the name “Zen in Your Den” for Palmer’s mobile massage therapy and airbrush (spray-on) tanning business. “Once I added airbrush tanning to mobile massage therapy two years ago, I needed a name that said more than just ‘licensed massage,’” says Palmer, who has a decade of experience providing deep tissue, relaxation, medical, bamboo, Swedish, prenatal and even seated chair massage therapies since graduating from Tampa’s Suncoast School of Massage. “Zen is about feeling good and both massage therapy and tanning make people feel better.” After providing her massage therapy services at local day spas and a chiropractor’s office for several years, the New Tampa resident decided to branch out on her own five years ago. Armed with a massage table that dwarfs her in size, Natasha takes her time with her clients, puts them at ease with soothing ocean sounds, finds out where their problem areas are and makes sure she addresses those areas thoroughly.
40
“Mobility equals convenience for my clients,” she says. “I’m not the biggest person in the world, but I’m stronger than I look. No one’s ever told me I wasn’t getting to their problem areas. Plus, I’m a caring person. I always pay attention to my clients’ needs.” Natasha says that massage therapy has a lot of benefits that not everyone knows about. In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, increasing circulation, relaxing and softening injured and/or overused muscles, reducing spasming and cramping and increasing joint flexibility, “massage therapy also can stimulate the flow of the lymph system, the body’s natural defense system,” she says. “For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells in the body that fight the cancer.” All I can tell you following one massage with Natasha is that she is ontime, has magic hands and definitely pinpoints and relieves any problem areas. But, don’t take my word for it. Chrstine Simmons, the owner of Studio F.I.T. Personal Training Studio, is not only a client of Natasha’s, she also refers her training clients to Zen in Your Den. “Tasha is both technically talented and physically strong,” Christine says. “I get weekly massages every Monday with her, which sets the tone for my week of

You may or may not have heard that tanning in our Florida sun isn’t exactly the safest thing for you. And, despite claims that tanning beds and lamps are safer than ever before, there’s no doubt that Natasha’s spray-on tan is the safest, fastest, easiest way to get an all-over tan. “An airbrush tanning session with me will give you the same results as five tanning bed sessions or as many hours in the sun,” Natasha says. “It also improves your skin’s overall appearance by de-emphasizing freckles, cellulite, stretch marks, scars, and varicose veins. So, if you’re fed up with dealing with the inconsistency of sunless tanning lotions or are trying to be more healthconscious, airbrush sunless tanning gives you a healthy way to tan yearround with less exposure to UV rays.” The tanning sprays Natasha uses are recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology, the Skin Cancer Foundation and the American Medical Association, as well as by her regular clients, like Ciccio’s/Lodge (in Tampa Palms) bartender Jordan Hoeffner, who has utilized Natasha’s spray tanning service to look her best for her friends’ weddings and before going on vacation.

She brings her tanning tent to your home, offers a few different types of spray-on tan, including one that has no color of its own, but helps turn your skin golden within a day. “All of the spray-on tans last about a week,” says Natasha. “They’re perfect for anyone who has a special event

“Fit 4 Life” Continued from page 37 literally couldn’t get out of bed or up out of a chair without significant pain,” says Tony, who not too long ago, played basketball for Florida College in Temple Terrace. “But now, thanks to the spine strengthening MedX machines at Fit 4 Life, not only am I totally pain-free, I’m playing stronger now than I did in college.” And, Tony’s not the only one seeing significant results with Fit 4 Life’s physical therapy services. Travis says he sees a lot of the tennis players and golfers from Saddlebrook, “because our low back program is so unique.” A client named Claus, age 70, raves about Fit 4 Life, too. “I have been coming to Fit for Life for ten years and I feel better now than I did then,” says Claus. “My golf game has improved so much that I am hitting the ball about 30 yards further on my drives. Fit 4 Life also has helped me recover from a life-threatening accident two-and-a-half years ago, where I fell almost two stories.” Travis also has one client, a local doctor we won’t name because he has his own physical therapy department, who still sends his back rehab patients to Fit 4 Life, which recently added

about 1,300 additional feet of space (now totalling about 4,500 sq. ft.) by taking over an adjacent vacant space in the office park. “We added a free weight area, because a lot of our clients have been requesting that we offer free weight training,” Travis says. “But, we simply didn’t have the room for it before.” Even with the free weights, however, all of Fit 4 Life’s certified trainers will still stress proper techniques and slow, to-full-exhaustion training. “And, we’re the only facility in the area with state-of-the-art MedX, Matrix and Iron Grip equipment,” Travis adds. For those who say they don’t have the time to work out, Travis says he can get you great results with just two 30-minute sessions per week, “especially if you follow our on-line ‘clean eating’ nutrition program.” Travis is so sure that he can help you look and feel better that he will give the first 50 people who respond to this article two months of the nutrition program for free! You also can get three weeks of fitness training and nutrition counseling (with no drugs or supplements) for only $149. Fit 4 Life Personal Training & Physical Therapy is located at 17419 Bridge Hill Ct. For more info, call 907-7879 or visit Fit4LifeTampa.com.

Saddlebrook’s Price Is Right In Our ‘March Madness’ Contest! Like most of the bracket contests for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, the suspense was taken out of our “March Madness” Contest when the University of Connecticut, Butler, Kentucky and Virginia Commonwealth University were the teams that advanced to the Final Four, despite our contest’s unique format. Because we had to go to press with our contest before this year’s field of 68 teams was announced, instead of picking the winners of every game leading up to the national title tilt, we simply asked our contestants to pick the 16 teams they believed would advance the furthest in the tourney. Only two of our nearly 50 March Madness contestants picked U Conn, Kentucky AND Butler among their top-16, so not surprisingly, those two contestants tied for our top honors
56
(with 300 points each), which sent the contest to our tiebreaker, which was to predict the total points scored by the WINNING team in the title game, which was won by U Conn over Butler, 53-41, in a poorly played finale to an amazing tourney. Therefore, this year’s Neighborhood News March Madness champ is James Price of Saddlebrook, who guessed that the winning team would score 73 points, which gave him the edge over tied contestant Tony Petrisko of Grand Hampton. Therefore, Price wins a $100 gift card to the restaurant of his choice and Petrisko wins $50 in free dining. Also winning prizes worth at least $20 apiece are (in order) Al Wenninger of Arbor Greene, Cathy Thomas and Mike Newbury of Tampa Palms and Wei Zhu of Northwood. — GN
