New Tampa Y’s Spinathon & Livestrong Programs Help Cancer Survivors! By Gary Nager When I first met personal trainer Shandra Valenzuela a year or more ago at a New Tampa Chamber of Commerce event, she was promoting Isagenix, a company which sells dietary supplements that the company claims can help people lose weight and cleanse their systems. I didn’t buy any Isagenix products from Shandra, who lives in Tampa Palms with her husband José and their four children, but I was impressed with not only her fitness level but also her knowledge of nutrition, metabolism and health and fitness in general. We hadn’t spoken for a while, so I was a little surprised when she called to pitch a story idea. Although I get a lot of phone calls and emails pitching stories, some of which can be kind of selfserving for the people calling or emailing (or for a member of their families), which is understandable, Shandra’s

request was different because she wanted the focus to be on the New Tampa Family YMCA in Tampa Palms, where she is a personal trainer and also one of several certified trainers for the New Tampa’s YMCA’s Livestrong program, which is a partnership with the Livestrong Foundation started by seventime Tour de France-winning cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. The New Tampa YMCA is one of 50 YMCAs throughout the U.S. that offers this program, which allows cancer survivors to receive three free months of personal training (and other services) with a Livestrong personal trainer, whether (at the New Tampa Y) Shandra, Marianne, Lisa or someone else. “It’s such an amazing program,” she says. “So many of these cancer patients have no idea how to get themselves back into shape or regain their strength and stamina after they start their chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments. It’s amazing to see the

progress they make once they realize they’re still alive and need to take better care of themselves and retrain their muscles so they can continue to be cancer survivors.” Shandra has Personal trainer Shandra Valenzuela (above left) rode been a happy particiher spin bike all four hours of the New Tampa Family pant in all three YMCA in Tampa Palms’ recent Spinathon (above right) to years of the New benefit Lance Armstrong’s “Livestrong” program that helps Tampa YMCA’s cancer patients get back into shape. annual “Spinathon,” in the three years the program has been a four-hour test of fitness and endurance where people raise money to at the New Tampa Y), providing more than $22,000 in much-needed-andbenefit the New Tampa YMCA’s Livemuch-appreciated support for these strong program. New Tampa YMCA’s ‘Spinathon’ Is Just Part Of The Plan (cont. from page 1) “As a certified Livestrong trainer, I have seen the kind of changes these very determined people make in their lives,” Shandra says. “When they first come here, most have spent so much time and energy with chemo and radiation, and fighting the effects of those treatments, that they can’t help but lose not only their desire to stay in shape, but also the muscle tone and stamina they need to just jump back into it.” She adds, however, that while she wishes the program would allow her to work with these cancer survivors for more than just twelve weeks, “I have seen so many of them make these incredible life changes in their commitment to eating healthy and exercising regularly. And, the good news is that they can continue to work out here at the New Tampa Y and I can still work with some of them as their personal trainer when they complete the Livestrong program.”

Real Men Get Breast Cancer! One of Shandra’s success stories is a gentleman named Frank Harmon, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last November and has had a radical mastectomy. Yes, you’re reading that correctly. Once he got over the stigma of being a man stricken with a disease most people associate with women, Frank realized he needed to make a change in his life, too. He began working with Shandra and the other Livestrong trainers at the New Tampa Y

and hasn’t looked back since. In fact, Frank wrote a book you can purchase online entitled Real Men Get Breast Cancer, which outlines his struggle and some of the facts and myths about the disease, including that although women are much more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer (nearly 300,000 new diagnoses in 2011 for women, only 2,100 in men), the numbers for men are rising and, just like with women, checking yourself for lumps or swelling around the breast area is the most likely way to find it. Frank, who today is tall and lean and looks like he could run a marathon, is happy to be able to work out three days a week at the YMCA, even though he completed his free Livestrong sessions a few months ago. “I give Shandra and the YMCA all the credit for both pushing and supporting me,” he says. “It shouldn’t take a diagnosis of cancer for more people to make this kind of change in their lives.” The Lance Armstrong Foundation was created by the world’s most famous cyclist, who of course, won his seventh and final Tour de France after being treated for testicular cancer. According to its available literature, the Foundation was founded by Armstrong in 1997 to “unite people through programs and experience to empower cancer survivors to live life on their own terms and to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.” In its 15-year history, the Foundation has raised more than a quarter of a BILLION dollars and a partnership with the YMCA — which provides health and social service needs to 20

million people in 10,000 U.S. communities — and with Moffitt locally, was a natural fit for all three organizations. Congratulations to everyone involved on the success of the recent Spinathon and to the cancer survivors, their caregivers and the trainers and staff at the New Tampa Family YMCA and the Tampa Metro YMCA regional umbrella organization, for showing yet again what an outstanding community partner the YMCA continues to be. With the New Tampa Relay for Life coming up on Friday, May 18 (at Wharton High), and with my father, Jack Nager, being a 45-year cancer survivor who never had a recurrence at a time when the “cure” rate for all cancers was about as high as the cure rates for lung and pancreatic cancer are today, this is one subject that pulls at my heart every day. So, to be able to help promote not only New Tampa’s Relay, but also the two Relay for Life events in Wesley Chapel — and literally anyone else trying to raise money and awareness of any major illness or legit community cause — is not only my pleasure, it’s my honor and privilege. And, speaking of the New Tampa Relay (see details on our Community Calendar pages, 16-17), I hope that anyone planning to participate in that great event will check out a song on Youtube.com, written and performed

by my friend from junior high school, Carine Ulano, called “Ribbons of Hope,” which Carine wrote for a friend of hers who is a breast cancer survivor. Everyone who sends us an email saying that they “liked” the song (which I hope will one day become the theme song for ALL Relay for Life events) to our new editorial email address (EditorialDept@NTNeighborhoodNews.com) or on our website (NTNeighborhoodNews.com) will be placed in a random drawing to win a pair of tickets to see “Broadway Comes to Tampa” on Saturday, May 12, plus other restaurant/spa prizes! See page 50 for details about the show!

Sign Reminds Tampa Palms Residents To Be Vigilant About Crime! By Matt Wiley A flashing construction sign in the median along Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms just before the Camden Live Oaks apartment complex warns residents to make sure their vehicles are locked and their valuables are hidden from sight. Despite two arrests in connection with the recent burglaries at the 770-unit complex in Tampa Palms, it appears that the string of thefts is continuing to be an issue. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), the most recent reported burglary occurred on April 10 at 15305 Plantation Oaks Dr. The report says that the suspects entered the apartment “via unknown means” without leaving traces of a definite route of entry. They stole a 20-inch TV and a surround sound receiver. Another burglary occurred nearby in the complex on March 30 at 15415 Plantation Oaks Dr. inside Camden Live Oaks. While the renters were out, an unknown suspect dressed in black and wearing blue surgical gloves cut the screen on the ground floor unit of the apartment building and broke a

6

window to get inside. TPD reports that a Sony Playstation and several games were stolen. TPD made two arrests on March 3 in the complex, but the suspects were not charged with all of the reported burglaries that have occurred there in recent months. TPD spokesperson Lisa Timmer says that the apartment complex conducted a “crime prevention safety meeting” on April 19 to help set up a Neighborhood Watch program in the community. She says that she and several TPD officers met with Camden staff on April 5 to discuss the recent crime outbreak and that the staff is eager to help. Live Oaks is not the only complex where crime is occurring in the area, however.Just across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from Live Oaks, Bristol Place Apartments, also located on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms, also has recently fallen victim to similar crimes. TPD reports that on April 8, between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 4 a.m., a car in Bristol Place was burglarized, but nothing was taken from the inside of the vehicle. According to the report, suspects jacked up a resident’s 2008

Nissan Altima in the parking lot of the apartment complex and stole all four wheels and tires from the vehicle, leaving it resting on landscaping stones. “The victim,” Timmer says, “had only lived in the complex for three days and indicated that it may have been someone that she knows.” Although there is no video surveillance in the complex, TPD This flashing sign on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms was able to get good reminds residents to secure their valuables. quality palm prints off the hood of the our press time. N EW T AMPA Another New Tampa Child Porn Arrest Another New Tampa man has been arrested on child pornography charges, just weeks after a similar arrest was made in our area. According to a report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), Joshua Scott Anderson, 26, of 10246 Arbor Side Dr. in the Arbor Greene community of New Tampa, was arrested on March 28 and charged with 10 counts of child pornography, a level three felony. The report says that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the Department of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Tampa Police Department (TPD) served a search warrant at Anderson’s home and discovered photographs of child pornography. Anderson was arrested and transported to the Hillsborough County jail with bail set at $20,000. This is the second arrest of this nature in the past few weeks in the New Tampa area. Edsel Capili, 40, of 20122 Weeping Laurel Pl. was

open at the Shops at Wiregrass mall. The 1,535-square-foot substation was constructed using inmate labor and will serve as PCSO’s District Office for southeastern Pasco County. “We saved thousands of dollars — taxpayer dollars — using inmate labor,” said Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco to the crowd of about 130 during the ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 26. “We were also able to use federal forfeiture dollars — drug money — to build this out. This was a shell before. The best part about it is that we’re using drug dealer money to give something back to our community.” The station also will be a resource center for volunteers, citizen support services and for fingerprinting. “Crime prevention specializes in education, empowerment and equipping,” said Cpl. Alan Wilkett, addressing the crowd gathered around the station. “This new office will allow all of those tenets of crime prevention to be

accomplished (at this substation).” Pasco County commissioner Ted Schrader and Pasco County comptroller & clerk Dr. Paula O’Neil also were in attendance, along with representatives from the Wesley Chapel, Central Pasco and Pasco/Hernando Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. The new substation is located next to Dillard’s in the mall, at 38239 Paseo Dr. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 11:30 a.m. Shoppers were able to interact with the Mounted Posse (PCSO deputies on horseback) and take a look at one of the Sheriff’s Office’s Crime Combat Vehicles. “(The substation) was much needed out here,” Sheriff Nocco said. “Wesley Chapel is a growing area in our county and the intersection of S.R. 56 and Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. is a major corridor. We have a hospital coming in; we have businesses that are growing here. This is a major component of our community.” — MW

New Tampa Community Theater Still In Works Off BBD? By Matt Wiley Beyond the new retention ponds across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from the entrance to Hunter's Green is an 80-acre piece of land that will one day be home to a New Tampa community theater and performing arts center, if all goes according to plan for the New Tampa Players (NTP) community theatre troupe. NTP will be hosting its annual “Broadway Comes to Tampa” event on Saturday, May 12 (see story on page 50), to raise money for the estimated $5-million cost of building the theater on the site. The event features a concert performed by some of Broadway's biggest stars, as well as a silent auction and raffle. “Depending upon how the auction goes and our sponsors, we will raise anywhere between $10,000 $30,000,” says NTP president Doug Wall. The proposed theater will be built on donated land currently owned by the Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation Department. The project began as a push by Graeme Woodbrook and his New Tampa Cultural Center group (and NTP) in 2002 for what was originally planned as the New Tampa

10

Cultural Center, that would not only include the community theater, but also classrooms, meeting and rehearsal spaces and more. Problems with funding and the County Commission’s requirements caused Woodbrook to scrap his plan in 2005. However, NTP always has still been pushing to build the theater. “We’ve gotten the county to commit to some property, but there are tons of strings attached,” he explains. “We’ve really just been trying to appease the County Commission for a few years now.” All of the land for the theater was originally set aside for retention ponds for the widening of BBD, but it was discovered that 14 acres could still be developed, a portion of which could be used for the theater. Wall says that the county committed to donating the property to NTP in 2010, and that, in addition to the community theater, it also was planned at that time to be used for a proposed iceskating rink and sports complex, but that project also fell through. District 2 Hillsborough County commissioner Victor Crist, whose district includes all of New Tampa, says that, if NTP can find the money for the “bricks and mortar” for the proposed

Bishop Family’s MS Fund Raiser To Be Held At GrillSmith May 24! My friends and long-time New Tampa residents Bonnie and Bob Bishop are proud to announce that they are holding an open-to-the-public fund raiser to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society at the GrillSmith on Paseo Dr. in the Shops at Wiregrass mall on Thursday, May 24, 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Bob, who was stricken with MS about four years ago, and Bonnie have participated in several other MS fund raisers and have wanted to do something more to help. “People don’t realize how debilitating and strange MS can be,” Bonnie says. “Bob’s condition is supposedly ‘stable,’ but sometimes he can walk a mile with me and sometimes, he can’t make it to the mailbox on his own. Is that stable? He has a hard time not being the person he was.” The couple is from New England (she from Massachusetts and he from Maine), so she says they first realized something was wrong when Bob, a former small college ice hockey goalie, “couldn’t skate a few feet without falling down.” He was diagnosed a short time thereafter. For a $10 donation to the MS

Society, attendees at the GrillSmith event, which is cohosted by “Bob’s Buddies,” will receive delicious complimentary Bonnie & hors d’oeuvres, Bob Bishop Happy Hour drink prices and be eligible to win free door prizes. There also will be a great silent auction of autographed Tampa Bay Lightning memorabilia, donated by their friends Sue (whom Bonnie says has helped her “so much” to put on the event) and former Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk. There also will be rounds of golf, restaurant and spa gift cards and more you can win. In addition to the Andreychuks, Bonnie thanks José Martin of Sweetbay and Joe Brooks from GrillSmith and of course, their children, Makayla and Jared. “This isn’t just about us and Bob, it’s about ‘the unknown’ and believing we can make a difference in MS,” Bonnie says. “Bob is our hero, but we know there are many more heroes like him out there.” For more information, email bfrombos@aol.com. — GN

“PigFest” Continued from page 1 “This year’s Vendor Village is open to any type of business and yes, you can sell your wares during the event,” says Gambacorta, “but we are having a focus on businesses owned and operated by women.” There may still be a vendor booth space or two available as you receive this issue, but the event is limited to 40 total. “Some vendors will be selling food and cigars,” he says. “But we also have doctors, accountants, lawyers and retailers, too.” Vendor booths cost $100. An electrical hookup costs an additional $20. Although your admission only includes your beverages and the food from Selmon’s, attendees can again purchase everything from vendor food to high-end raffle entries to tastes of the BBQ contestants’ different styles of roast pig using “Pig Bucks,” which will be on sale at the entrance to the PigFest. Speaking of money, the pigroasting teams are competing for a top cash prize of $500, with professional BBQ judges deciding who will succeed last year’s winners — the “Meat Monkeys” from St. James United Methodist Church — as the PigFest champs for 2012.

Great Enter tainment, Too!

As always, there will be entertainment all day for young and old alike. For the kids, the St. Mark’s playground will be open and supervised all day, and there also will be face-painting, the pie-eating contest, a tug-ofwar contest, martial arts demonstrations and a Tampa Fire rescue truck on display. Among the entertainers are again the Freedom High Jazz Band, popular local singer (and “PigFest Theme” songwriter) Bob Thompson, a color guard presentation and much more. This year’s event also will feature an appearance by the Florida Blood Services Bloodmobile for those wishing to donate blood and a “Feeding America” food drive sponsored by the New Tampa Evening Rotary, so bring some non-perishable food with you to support this outstanding cause. The Rotary PigFest itself is the largest single fund raising event to benefit each of the six participating nonprofit Rotary Clubs and the charities each supports with service projects and cash donations. “We’re promising a bigger and better event and we plan to deliver just that,” Gambacorta says. “Join us!” For more information about the 2012 Rotary PigFest, visit RotaryPigFest.com.

Cross Creek Animal Medical Centre Combines Caring & Technology! By Matt Wiley Lasers and acupuncture may not sound like words usually associated with pets and vets, but the Cross Creek Animal Medical Centre uses both to keep pets in both New Tampa and Wesley Chapel healthy. Dr. Timothy D. Hodge, D.V.M., and his staff have a passion for pets that has resonated through their use of new technology — and superior customer service — since the veterinary hospital first opened in 2003. Cross Creek is a full-service animal hospital now located in the Cory Lake Isles Professional Center off of Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa, geared towards helping dogs, cats and “pocket pets,” such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets. The hospital has taken advantage of new technologies, such as laser surgeries and procedures, and made them the focus of the office’s pet care since it opened. Dr. Hodge and his staff believe that his use of laser surgeries for so many years and the entire staff’s devotion to customer service are what separates Cross Creek from other animal care facilities in the area. “We had decided in the very

beginning that because laser technology was really taking off and it was more affordable, and small animal practices could have this service, we purchased the laser from the very beginning,” says Dr. Hodge. “We made it part of our procedures from the get-go. That’s the new standard of care.” Dr. Hodge uses a surgical laser for all of the surgical procedures Dr. Timothy Hodge, DVM (left), and his friendly staff invite you to visit the Cross Creek Animal Medical Centre in the he performs. He says Cory Lake Isles Professional Plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. that it provides a much better experience for laser in action during his last few years the pet because, as opposed to an inciof veterinary school at Mississippi State sion with a scalpel, a laser doesn’t leave University in Starkville before gradating exposed nerve endings and blood veswith his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine sels when it cuts. degree in 1995. “That’s where you get more pain,” In addition to the surgical laser, he explains. “But, the laser seals nerve Dr. Hodge and his staff also use a comendings and blood vessels as it cuts, panion therapeutic laser, a small making the procedure almost bloodless. portable laser that emits a circle of red It’s less painful; there’s less discomfort. light and is used to treat arthritis, skin And, pets are less likely to mess with irritations, swelling, chronic ear issues their incisions afterwards.” and other issues. The laser is mobile, so Hodge says he first saw a surgical pets can be brought in for treatment, or

it can even be taken on house calls. Hodge says that the therapeutic laser has been used a lot recently in physical therapy and sports medicine for humans, noting that in some cases, it helps athletes avoid surgery and get back in the game more quickly. “Patients usually want to come back,” Hodge says. “We tell them to see how one laser session goes. They usually call back and say they want to set up a package.” At Cross Creek, Hodge says he likes to get to the bottom of the problem and eliminate it completely. “It’s what I consider ‘un-stacking the deck of cards,’” he says. “Every time I do a laser session, I’m taking off a certain amount of cards from the stack. Eventually, you want to get down to as low as possible, so there’s no pain, no discomfort; that’s all gone.” By using the laser to reduce inflammation and irritation with different pet ailments, Hodge says it helps to reduce the amount of oral medication he has to prescribe for the pet. “If we can get these pets off chronic medication, that’s great,” he says. Shelley Cobb and her eight-yearold Sheltie Joey, know the benefits of the companion laser.

Cats and dogs can both receive acupuncture treatments at Cross Creek Animal Medical Centre. “He is on his second package now and he is very happy,” says Cobb. “He is part of the family and I am happy that I do not have to give him medication every day. Overall, we are very pleased and will continue to have the therapeutic laser sessions performed on Joey.” Another technique Hodge uses to try to offer alternatives to oral medication is the Eastern practice of acupuncture to treat common pet issues, such as arthritis. He uses Western medical practices to diagnose the problem, and then offers acupuncture as a treatment option to “help the body heal itself.” “I like to think of it more as ‘integrated medicine,’” he says. “We use a little of (Eastern and Western medicine) to optimize our care for the pets.” Cross Creek does not practice what Hodge describes as “shotgun

medicine,” where a person brings in a pet and the vet just writes a prescription and sends them on their way. He says that getting to use cutting-edge technology and run his practice his way were always his goals. “I was an associate vet for seven years, so I worked under another doctor, who was the owner of that clinic,” he explains. “At that point, I thought I was ready to branch out on my own. I kind of had my own ideas of how I would run a place, how I would do certain things.” In 2003, he decided to make his dream a reality and started Cross Creek Animal Medical Centre from scratch, instead of moving his office into someone else’s previous location. “At that point, everything you plan is basically how you want it,” he explains. “You’re not going in and buying a facility that’s already set up a certain way with a certain thought process, and then you’ve got to mold that to your way. It was easier to just start from the beginning, my way, and then have everything develop after that.” In 2011, Dr. Hodge and Cross Creek moved to their current facility in the Cory Lake Isles Professional Center, just down the street on Cross Creek Blvd. from their previous location in another retail center.

“I love this area,” says Hodge. “The community is wonderful.” And, speaking of the community, Dr. Hodge says he likes to give back. He says that any surplus food or pet supplies are donated to the Humane Society or Animal Services. He also is starting a “charitable trust,” a new For everything from boarding your pet to laser surgeries, program that will soon help customers who may Cross Creek has it all in a clean, colorful environment! the course of the year,” he explains. not be able to afford a certain proce“It’s something that we’re doing to dure or medication at the time that help make pet care more affordable.” their pet needs it. Brookline Physical Therapy — Quality Injury Care & More! By John McGurl A welcoming new physical therapy clinic is offering more than just injury care in Wesley Chapel, just off of S.R. 56 in the Cypress Glen Professional Park. But Brookline also has added affordable personal training and Zumba, Yoga, and Pilates fitness classes to its top-quality therapy services. Founded by John Esguerra, MSPT, and his wife Lea Esguerra, PT, Brookline was created to put the needs of injured patients first. Esguerra received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990, and his Master of Science in Physical Therapy in 1999, both from Boston University. He says everything about the clinic was built with the patient in mind, from a unique floor that is easy on the joints, to the stateof-the-art fitness and rehab equipment. Physical therapy can help with problems that make it difficult to move around or complete everyday tasks. “People often try to work through the pain, but this can actually make problems worse,” says Esguerra, adding that while every injury is different and requires a different plan, “Our treatments are based on individual evaluations where we identify the problem and figure out the best treatment.”

24

He says physical therapists are trained to give people the tools to reduce pain. “I am so thankful that my doctor sent me to Brookline Physical Therapy for my shoulder condition,” says patient John Caffarelli. “My therapist was extremely personable and professional. He took the time to explain all the different exercises I would be doing and taught me the correct use of all of his machines. If I ever need physical therapy again, I will be sure to come back to Brookline.” Esguerra says that one common misconception today is that people have little choice in where to receive healthcare such as physical therapy. “But, nothing can be further from the truth,” says Esguerra. “In most cases, you do have a choice. Many times your physician will make a recommendation for where to go for services such as physical therapy because they believe it may be a more convenient location for you, but are often reluctant to discuss with you the quality of the care you may receive. Since we opened our doors a common complaint we have heard from local physicians is that it is difficult to find quality physical therapy services at some rehabilitation companies as they appear to be more

therapists are overworked, understaffed, or do not have the proper facility to provide quality care for their patients. But, Brookline Physical Therapy is a therapist-owned private practice that makes quality care our primary goal and we utilize innovative technology to keep our overhead costs low in order to provide first class, cost-effective treatments for all of our patients. Healthcare consumers need to understand that they have a right to demand quality and that they have a choice.”

Quality PT Services...

Among its many services, Brookline offers spinal decompression traction, which Esguerra says can be recommended by your doctor or therapist as an effective alternative to surgery, along with core stabilization exercises. Spinal decompression therapy is a more comfortable traction therapy used to relieve back, neck, leg, and arm pain and to treat problems like herniated discs, sciatica, compression fractures and joint pain. While most insurance plans cover spinal decompression, if your insurance doesn’t cover mechanical traction, the cost of the treatment is $50 per session. For patients with arthritis or fibromyalgia, the clinic also has cold laser treatments. “Cold” lasers do a number of things for your body, from reducing localized inflammation to

stimulating the immune system. It also can be used to relieve acute and chronic pain, and stimulate nerve function. Much like the abacus evolved into the computer, cold lasers have been referred to as “modern day acupuncture” by relevant web sites. Unfortunately, this type of treatment is still considered investigational and insurance does not cover it. However, if Esguerra believes it will be effective in your treatment, he will not charge additional fees for cold laser treatment. Stand-alone cold laser treatments will cost $35 per session when requested by a patient or by his or her doctor. Brookline provides a full spectrum of physical therapy for all age groups, having seen patients from as young as age 5 to the age of 92. Esguerra says he pulls from past experiences to make his operation in Wesley Chapel run smoothly. “We (Brookline Physical Therapy) are all under one roof, we are all state of the art,” he says.

More Than Just PT!

A variety of fitness programs, including Zumba, Yoga and Pilates classes, are available at Brookline. “We intended to offer these services from when we started planning the office,” says Esguerra. “The facility was designed for them.” The premium dance floor is designed with a highquality vinyl that is easy on the joints

when moving rapidly in high-impact classes like Zumba. Zumba is one of the fastest-growing aerobic workouts, with classes in almost every gym, and even a video game released for all three major game systems and their motion technologies. Essentials Massage & Facials — Affordable Luxury For Mother’s Day! By Camille Gillies If you thought that a $25 massage would get you a hack masseuse and a rickety table in a ramshackle shell, think again. In the case of Essentials Massage & Facials, located off S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel, $25 can buy you an hour of the kind of luxury many people thought they couldn’t afford in light of today’s economy. At Essentials, located near Sam’s Club in the Seven Oaks professional park, that incredible price gets you an hour-long relaxation (Swedish) massage in a luxurious setting with an experienced, licensed massage therapist (LMT) that rivals those you’d find at a five-star hotel. That same jaw-dropping price of $25 also pays for a European facial performed by the highly trained, licensed aestheticians at Essentials, who use top-of-the-line skincare products. “You can’t find a value like this anywhere in New Tampa,” says coowner Forrest Gorman, who opened the spa with his wife Tania last June. “We offer a five-star experience at fastfood prices.” Tania is one of the three certified aestheticians who perform facials at Essentials of New Tampa. Spa manager Susan Roger points out that Essentials is unlike other spas in the area in another respect, too.

28

“We don’t require our customers to sign contracts here,” she says. “You can visit as often as you like and you are only charged the price of the service each time.” Essentials Massage & Facials is a franchise that began in Pinellas County and currently has 14 (L. to r.) We have a lot of repeat business.” Massage is enjoyed by young and old alike. “We have a group of four older ladies who make the trip here weekly from Dade City,” Susan says. “Massage is a source of relief to many people suffering from arthritis or simply from the aches and pains associated with pulled muscles and past injuries.” Couples massages also are available and, Forrest says, are a fun and relaxing way to spend an evening. The couple shares a room, but each person has his or her own massage therapist. “Some couples come in again and again,” he says. “It’s a great way to unwind together, and the cost is about the same as a night at the movies.” Not surprisingly, couples massage is a popu-

lar activity for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and other special events. Forrest says Essentials’ affordable skin services also are becoming increasingly popular as the word gets out about the quality and the value. Facial options include European ($25 for one hour), acne ($40), anti-aging ($40), back facials ($40) microdermabrasion ($55), and chemical peels ($49.95). “For our facials, we use GM Collin products, which is a skincare line used at five-star spas as well as at the Academy Awards,” Tania says. As an added service, Essentials invites a cosmetic dermatology practitioner from a local medical practice to provide consultations for customers interested in Botox injections and Juvederm or Restylane dermal fillers. Another popular special is a $49.95 microdermabrasion and facial combination that is available on Mondays and Wednesdays only. Susan says that these services — and events such as a “mini-spa day,” which includes a onehour massage, one-hour facial, light lunch and a glass of wine, all for $65 — would be triple the cost elsewhere. Essentials also offers a “Ladies Night Out” package ($95 per person), which includes a European facial, onehour massage, complimentary exfoliation, wine, cheese and crackers in a pri-

vate salon setting. Susan says it is a popular choice for birthdays and bridal parties and it’s available any weeknight between 6 and 9 and all day on Sunday. Other spa services include waxing, as well as hot and cold body wraps that concentrate on detox and cellulite reduction. Susan says ladies might consider a wrap before a big occasion when they are trying to slim down to fit into a special dress. If you’re interested in hair removal, Essentials offers all types of waxing services, from eyebrows and underarms, to bikini areas and legs. The spa features a room used exclusively for this service. Essentials also reserves a room for spa parties. The spa will even close to the public for private gatherings and tailor events to suit customers’ needs. “We can even do mimosa breakfast parties as well as wine-and-cheese evening events,” Susan says. An a la carte menu is available to help you plan. With Mother’s Day and the June wedding season fast approaching, you might want to take note of the gift certificates and party packages available at Essentials Massage & Facials (2230 Ashley Oaks Circle, Wesley Chapel). Or heck, go ahead and treat yourself! Call 527-6979 or visit EssentialsofNewTampa.com.

Three New Tampa Scouts Spread Their Wings As Eagles By Matt Wiley Zakary Adams always knew he wanted to be an Eagle Scout. On March 20, he made that goal a reality as he and his two friends, Connor Harding and Nicholas Novatne, were recognized as Eagle Scouts, the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve, during a ceremony at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church on Cross Creek Blvd., where the trio first met and attended their scout meetings. “It felt like the culmination of my journey in the Scouts and the gateway to the next chapter,” says Adams. Unlike many Boy Scouts, Adams, now 16, started as a Cub Scout when he was in 4th grade. Many Cub Scouts begin their journey in kindergarten or first grade. Adams says that he is grateful for his later start. “I started when I was a little more mature,” he says. “It gave me a better appreciation. I was excited about Scouting. It wasn’t just another meeting my parents were making me go to.” He says the excitement that he felt towards the program at a young age helped him stick with it. Many kids who begin scouts at a young age don’t end up continuing on to become Eagle

34

Scouts. According to the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA), only about five percent of all Boy Scouts go on to become Eagle Scouts. “It was perseverance,” he says. “I really wanted to get Eagle. Boy Scouts gave me those aspirations. I wanted to be able to show that I stuck with it.” Adams is currently a sophomore at Wiregrass Ranch High and he says he is grateful to scouting for many of the friends he has met along the way, two of which received the same honor on the same night he did. “I started Scouts right before middle school,” he explains. “I went to a middle school outside of my county so I didn’t know a lot of people in the area. I met people through Scouts that I now know in school.” Novatne met Adams when Adams first joined Boy Scout Troop 148 of the New Fire District. The group has met at St. Mark’s for as long as Novatne can remember. A patrol leader at one point himself, Novatne remembers Adams being his assistant patrol leader. Novatne, now an 18-year-old senior at Wiregrass Ranch High, started Cub Scouts around the first grade. “I remember making little wooden cars in my grandfather’s woodshop,” he says.

(L. to r.) Nick Novatne, Zakary Adams and Connor Harding were recognized as Eagle Scouts at a recent ceremony held at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church

Novatne’s older brother Alan also is an Eagle Scout. After seeing his brother earn Eagle, Novatne says, he wasn’t sure whether or not he really wanted to stick with the program. “I guess it was partly out of spite for myself,” he explains. “I couldn’t tell if (my parents) wanted me to get Eagle because my brother did, or because they thought that I could.” But Novatne continued on, and says he is grateful that he did. “It’s an amazing honor,” he says. “I went the distance, I’m proud of myself.” Connor Harding also followed in the footsteps of his family members to

become an Eagle Scout. “My dad was in (the Boy Scouts) before and my cousin was an Eagle,” says Harding. “That’s what made me want to do it.” The 17-year-old junior at Land O’ Lakes High started Scouts as a first grader in Massachusetts. He met Adams and Novatne at age 11, after moving to the Tampa Bay area and attending Troop 148 meetings at St. Mark’s. He says that he is grateful for all of the leadership skills that he has learned through his years as a Boy Scout. “It feels pretty good knowing that

all that hard work has paid off,” Harding says, relieved. “I learned lots of life lessons. I even learned things you wouldn’t expect to learn in Scouts, like how to balance a check book and make a budget.”

The Eagle Project The three new Eagles had to utilize all of the skills that they learned to complete the pinnacle of their scouting career: the Eagle project. According to NESA, to become an Eagle Scout, a Scout has to plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to his religious institution, school or community. Adams decided to build two sets of gardens at Wiregrass Ranch High. “The most difficult part of becoming an Eagle Scout is the project,” he explains. “It’s like all of the other projects combined. Mine took two to three months to finish.” Novatne decided to raise money and construct three new picnic tables behind St. Mark’s, where the Troop meets. He also fixed up the fire pit. “It was actually a lot more difficult than it sounds,” he says. “I raised funds with car washes and donations. The tables were 12 feet by 5 feet. I, of course, had help, but I still organized the whole thing.”

Eagle Scout candidates are not required to complete their projects entirely by themselves, since showing leadership is one of the principles that must be demonstrated to achieve the honor. However, they are in charge of all of the planning, directing and following through until the project’s completion, according to NESA. Harding decided to save six dying oak trees at St. Mark’s, their roots suffocating under the weight of mulch and dirt that had never been changed. “(The project) would have cost the church about $12,000,” Harding explains. “I replaced the dirt and mulch and tore out all of the stray roots.” All three Eagles have higher education plans for the future, a quality scouting and their families helped fuel. Adams plans to join the Coast Guard after high school to fly helicopters while simultaneously working towards an engineering degree from the Coast Guard Academy. Novatne plans to attend Pasco-Hernando Community College while figuring out what to do next. And Harding, while undecided on where he wants to attend college, plans to pursue a law degree or a career in government service. Novatne’s father and the boys’ Troop Master Joel Novatne is extremely proud of the new Eagle Scouts.

“As a Scout Master, three or four new Eagle Scouts in a year is just great, especially considering the statistics,” he says. “But, it’s still up to the boys to make it happen.” Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is an honor that truly is a milestone in a Scout’s life. Harding is happy to share the experience with two of his friends. “There’s just no better way to do it,” he says. Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of the country’s largest youth development organizations and has been teaching young people life-skills and values since 1910. Their mission is to “provide an educational program for

boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.” Adams, Harding and Novatne join the more than two million Eagle Scouts that have been recognized by BSA since 1912. Boy Scout Troop 148 meets at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church off Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa every Tuesday at 7 p.m. For more information or to get involved with the troop, send an email to Leader-BoyScouts@StMark Tampa.org. Liberty’s Maya Patel Advances To National Finals Of Geography Bee! By John McGurl When we think of a “Geography Bee,” questions about rivers and the highest mountain ranges may come to mind, but what a lot of us tend to forget about geography class is that it’s not just about landscapes. The annual National Geographic Geography Bee (NGGB) reminds us that geography also is about culture, history and even the politics of the world’s regions, as 14-year-old Maya Patel can tell you. The eighth grader from Liberty Middle School in Tampa Palms is headed to the NGB National Championship in Washington, D.C., after beating out 99 other students at the State NGGB competition in Jacksonville on March 30. The trivia competition is for students from grades 4-8 who are under the age of 15 and is open to students from all 50 states. Maya will be proudly representing the Sunshine state, as well as the New Tampa community, at the National event. Maya not only beat the 99 other students from all over Florida at Jacksonville University, but also 1,100 students from Liberty. She attributes her success to her parents and their love for

traveling. When Patel won at the State level, she was awarded $100 and an allexpenses-paid trip to our nation’s Capitol. She says she is now studying for the National level round, which will be held on Thursday, May 24, at the headquarters of National Liberty Middle School Geographic 8th grader Maya Patel magazine. is headed to the NationMaya will have al finals of the National the opportunity Geographic Geography to meet the Bee in May. moderator of the event, host Alex Trebek of TV’s “Jeopardy” game show. Tampa Bay Rebels Bring Pro Basketball Action To Freedom High! By John McGurl If the recent “March Madness” left you feeling a little depressed (after all the Florida Schools in the big dance ended their run before the “Final Four”), the Tampa Bay Rebels are here to lift the spirits of local basketball fans. Founded by coach Fernando Rojas in 2011, the Rebels are a minor league team that will be competing for the first time in the Florida Basketball Association (FBA)’s inaugural season this summer, and are hoping to build a fan base for the team and the FBA. Coach Rojas, a native of Mexico who has been a Tampa Palms resident since 1996, started his professional career with the National team in his home country, and was an assistant coach at Freedom High in 2010-11. Rojas, who never played college ball, went straight to pro out of high school. “I want the Rebels to mean a lot to the area,” Rojas says. The minor league club will provide pro hoops entertainment, and a unique chance to relate to the players on the court. Before the Rebels, local residents would have to travel to Miami or Orlando to see a professional basketball game. Unlike an NBA game, however, where you may spend hours waiting to shake your favorite player’s hand and

38

end up only catching a glimpse of him leaving the arena, Rojas’ club provides a singular opportunity for fans to meet their favorite players. In addition to the much shorter distance to travel for a game, the Rebels provide affordable entertainment for the entire community. Season tickets are available now for only $50, which includes six home games, or just $10 per game at the door. The first home game of the season will be on Saturday May 19, at Lutz Preparatory School (future home games will be played at Freedom), and the Rebels are offering a free team T-shirt to the first 50 fans. The Rebels’ season open on the road at the Palm Beach Titans on May 5. Coach Rojas is not only bringing basketball fans entertainment, he also is providing Freedom’s young players an opportunity to practice in a professional environment. Rojas has two sons, one of whom attends Rebels practice with other high school boys on Wednesday nights. “It gives the kids an opportunity they wouldn't have somewhere else,” says Rojas. Having worked for the school, Rojas was able to make a deal with Freedom to use their gym for Rebels games and practices. Rojas promises to provide the community with quality basketball. “These games are often better than col-

lege games,” he says. “The players have played their college ball and tend to be more refined now.” The Rebels recently added seven- foot center Matt Kendrick to their roster. Rojas has had his eye on the big man since his senior year at Tampa’s Chamberlain High. Kendrick, who played his college ball at Saint Leo University near Dade City, began practicing with the Rebels after returning from playing in a Chilean league. “I almost had a triple Coach Fernando Rojas (in blue), a long-time double in that league, and I Tampa Palms resident, is bringing minor league look forward to doing the pro hoops action and local stars like Matt Kendrick same here for the Rebels,” (right), to Freedom High in Tampa Palms. says Kendrick. will be invited to the Rebels pre-season The Rebels also volunteer their camp starting on Monday, April 23. time to the Boys & Girls Club of Rojas says the minor league club is a Tampa Bay by providing youth basketball camps. Golf Drives & Test Drives To Help Repave Wharton’s Track By John McGurl Test driving a Ford may not sound like it could possibly help New Tampa’s Paul R. Wharton High raise funds for the school’s ongoing track resurfacing project, but Parks Ford of Wesley Chapel is holding an event to do just that. Parks is teaming up with Wharton to put on the “Drive One 4 UR School” event, the Ford Motor Company ‘s initiative to raise funds for valued high school programs across the country. Since the program’s inception in 2007 it has raised more than $10 million through nearly 3,000 “Drive One” events. Ford dealers and high schools will attempt to raise a record setting $1 million this April, putting on more than 300 events throughout the nation. Dealerships will donate up to $6,000 each to their local high schools. The funds can be used to support any department that needs it. Wharton is planning on using the funds to help pay for the much needed resurfacing of their running track. Parks Ford and Wharton will host their event at Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club off Cross Creek Blvd. on Friday, April 27, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. “Since the local school districts are facing so many budget cuts, it’s nice to

be able to offer this type of support to the high schools and local community,” says Jennifer Cofini, the public relations manager for Parks Ford. Cofini adds that although Wharton isn’t the closest high school to the dealership, Parks Ford has worked with Wesley Chapel High in the past and still looks forward to working with Wiregrass Ranch High in the future. For each valid test drive completed, Ford Motor Company will donate $20 to the participating high school. For the “Drive One 4 UR School” event, Parks Ford will provide vehicles such as the Ford Focus, F150 truck, Explorer, Edge, Fiesta, Escape and Flex. Test drivers must be age 18 or older. In conjunction with the test drives, Andy Ritter, father of two Wharton track team members, also is putting on a golf tournament and silent auction. “I've been so impressed with the sacrifice of Coach Wes Newton and his assistants that I had to do something to give back,” Ritter says. Items up for auction will include sports memorabilia, a weekend at a beach house and fine men’s watches. Resurfacing the track will benefit more than the just the track team. The entire student body that must take physical education classes will be safer

on a track that will no longer be missing chunks. Also Wharton will be able to host track meets, bringing economic growth to New Tampa. For more info about the “Drive One 4 UR School” event, contact Jennifer Cofini at Parks Ford at 9077800,. For info about the golf tournament, contact Andy Ritter at 716-2128.

The helpful staff at Parks Ford in Wesley Chapel will donate $20 to Wharton High for every test drive taken on Friday, April 27, at Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club.

array of fields – academics, communications and technology, performing & visual arts, recreation, sports and travel. “Camp IDS has been providing something for everyone from pre-kindergarten through high school for many years,” says IDS-CC’s Marie Massara, who co-directs the camp with Assistant Head of School Nick Rodriguez and middle school teacher Stephen Shoe. While many campers participate in traditional sports camps such as soccer, volleyball and archery, children looking for something new can choose from camps in disc golf, filmography, Chinese kids’ games or earth-friendly art, just to name a few. Fine arts camps in musical theatre, drama, band, dance, photography and painting complement other creative endeavors in cooking, newspaper reporting, broadcasting and computers. A Wilderness Extreme camp for 5th-8th graders, for example, includes hiking, mountain biking, snorkeling, canoeing and inline skating. And an Adventure Camp for grades 3-5 takes children to a variety of attractions around the Tampa Bay area. “Campers can strengthen reading, writing or math skills in the morning and then dance on stage or shoot hoops in the afternoon,” Rodriguez says. “They can paint, perform in a

Broadway musical, build and launch model rockets, learn archery, cook, bake and so much more. We offer something for everyone.” Shoe adds, “What’s been great about Camp IDS is that the children can choose what they really want to do. The wide selection of camps exposes children to new things that they might not normally know much about, and offers them an opportunity to expand their interests in a positive and supportive environment.” For example, middle school thrill seekers can join IDS middle school teacher Tom Bronson on the roller coaster connoisseur’s dream trip, Adrenaline Camp. Last year, participants rode roller coasters in five parks in five days, and this year, Bronson hopes to top that record. He also is conducting a SCUBA camp, so middle schoolers can earn their NAUI certification and then head to the Florida Keys for diving. “The majority of children who come to Camp IDS have been here before,” says Massara. “They keep coming back because they feel safe, welcome, and they have a great time.” “Our highly trained teachers and experienced camp counselors love what they do,” adds Shoe. “And that fun and positive attitude permeates the entire

Bella Mia Hair Designs Can Help You (& Your Mom) Feel Beautiful! By Sheryl Young Abby Harris can remember wanting to be a hairstylist since she was a teenager. Not only has her dream come true, she even opened her own salon four and a half years ago, and it’s still going great. Bella Mia Hair Designs is in the New Tampa Center plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. at Cross Creek/ New Tampa Blvd., just two doors down from Publix. Harris bought the salon from her previous employer. He was selling, and she saw a golden opportunity. “I started with one stylist besides myself, and now I have nine,” Harris says. Still only 33 years old, she has steadily built a local following while also retaining most of her original clientele. Her business has thrived with walk-ins and referrals from her current customers, those of her stylists and still more word of mouth from the popular shopping center. Bella Mia is a full-service hair salon offering everything from simple women’s, men’s and children’s haircuts, to specialty perms and high-end coloring and highlighting. The services offered also include eyebrow and lip waxing. Harris is a certified cosmetolo-

gist by the state of Florida, which helped her master skills in other beauty business areas (including makeup and facials), but she has decided to have her salon concentrate on all things hair. “I went to a vocational high school for cosmetology, after shadowing two aunts who were in the business,” Abby explains. “Then, I did hair on cruise ships for a while. It’s what I’ve always loved. The majority of my stylists also have been doing this for anywhere from ten to twenty years, and have all been with me for at least three years. We all take pride in the professionalism and family-friendly atmosphere at Bella Mia.” The salon didn't have the name Bella Mia before Abby took over. She explains, “I renamed it Bella Mia because it means ‘My Beautiful’ and we want everyone to leave here feeling beautiful. Plus, my father is Sicilian and I wanted to do something that reflected my Italian heritage.” Abby and her staff also get involved in the community, in order to touch base with new and prospective customers, as well as to be visible in the community surrounding the salon. Bella Mia gift certificates are donated to many needy causes and the entire staff participated in the recent 2012 Taste of

New TampaTM, where non-food vendors pay for booth spaces to reach out and introduce themselves to thousands of local residents. “I want to start doing even more in the community, because I’m very proud of my staff,” she adds. “The quality of their work and our relationships with our customers are what sets us apart from most other hair styling salons. So many of us, customers included, get involved in each other's lives — we know when someone is pregnant or having other important events going on in their lives.”

Highly Trained Stylists & Customer Satisfaction

But, Abby and her staff never rest

on their laurels in their industry. “We attend all of the Redken hair shows, like the 2011 Symposium in Las Vegas, and we stay up on our education with in-house training, too. We’re currently introducing an ammonia-free, extra-fortifying color line. It’s truly a new color technique breakthrough!” Although most of Abby’s stylists have been with her a long time, she also offers an extensive training program for new hires, as well as goals for experienced hairdressers. “I have an apprentice program and a level program,” she says. “A new stylist will work under another as an apprentice for ten months. This also can benefit the customer, as there are pricing levels which vary according to

the time demands and levels of the stylists.” For example, Bella Mia’s Jennifer Trombley is a “Level 4” stylist. “I’ve been doing hair for about fourteen years and with Abby for three,” she says. “I liked that Abby was offering a team environment. She has helped me continue my styling education, and helps us as individual stylists. And in turn, it’s exciting for me to help the younger stylists grow.” Abby says that another advantage of Bella Mia is that these hair artists work for her; they aren’t just renting booth space. “It keeps them respectful of each other, and of me,” she says, “and there’s a level of responsibility each of them brings to the salon’s success. In other words, it’s working.” Stylist Sarah Romine was with client Amanda Re when we checked in. Amanda said she had been a customer of Sarah’s for six years, fand followed her to Bella Mia from another salon. “I asked a friend who they thought could work well with my bleached hair, and they recommended Sarah,” Amanda said.“And we've been together ever since...through boyfriends, marriage and babies.” A long-time client of Abby’s, Dena Pisaneschi, was already using her as her stylist when Abby purchased Bella Mia. “Abby does a great job on my hair,” Dena says, “besides making

I highly recommend it.” Abby and her husband, David Harris, also are new parents. Their son, Luca, is 7-1/2 months old. “David pinch-hits here when he can,” says the proud mom. “He’s very supportive.” Bella Mia carries Redken and Wayne Grund products. In addition, for customers who like their hair products sulfate-free, they also can find the Redken Pureology® line at Bella Mia. For more information, stop by the salon, located at 19038 Bruce B. ‘Broadway Comes (Back) To Tampa’ — At Saddlebrook Resort! By Matt Wiley “Broadway Comes to Tampa” is turning lucky number 13 this year, as several top Broadway stars will once again be coming to Saddlebrook Resort & Spa Tampa in Wesley Chapel for the New Tampa Players’ annual event on Saturday, May 12, 6 p.m. “Expect many new faces,” says Doug Wall, president of the New Tampa Players (NTP). Only one of this year’s confirmed Broadway guests, Natalie Toro (“Les Miserables” and “Cats”) has attended the event in the past, so attendees will be treated to several different artists that they likely never have had a chance to see perform in person. “I try to bring new faces each year,” Wall says. “I definitely like to keep it fresh.” He says that about 60 percent of past attendees have such a good time that they end up attending again the following year, many from out-of-state and from all over the Tampa Bay area. Wall says he is expecting a big crowd this year, since the event is being held over Mother’s Day weekend. He says he expects that many who plan to attend will make a week-

You Say When Yogurt — You May Not Believe It’s Not Ice Cream! By Gary Nager With all of the frozen yogurt shops that have opened in our area the last year or two, you might think it would be difficult to distinguish one from the other. Well, while some might argue that yogurt is yogurt — and will never be ice cream — I believe that the new You Say When Yogurt Shoppe in Highwoods Preserve, near Boston Market and the Verizon store, has got the perfect formula for success. The yogurt at You Say When, which did previously have a location in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, but that shop has since changed names, is exceptionally creamy, much closer to ice cream (despite its many low-calorie, low- and even no-fat options) in taste than most other frozen yogurts I’ve sampled (and I’ve sampled quite a few now), the shoppe stocks virtually any topping you could ask for (including real hot fudge and hot caramel, yum!) and the owners are two long-time law enforcement veterans and New Tampa residents who want to provide both a great product and a safe haven for young families and teens. Owners Kevin and Ali Fitzpatrick met when Kevin, a long-time, nowretired deputy with the Hillsborough

County Sheriff’s Office, was teaching at the Police Academy when Ali was training for her long career with the Tampa Police Department. Both have more than 25 years protecting and serving (Ali is almost ready to retire, too) and Kevin says the yogurt business just sort of fell into their laps. “We’ve both got more than 25 years of serving the community,” he says. “Now, we’re just serving the community great yogurt.” He says the couple’s son Joshua introduced them to a competing yogurt company’s shop on N. Dale Mabry, just when the Fitzpatricks were looking for a business they could open somewhere in or close to the home in Tampa Palms where the family has lived since 1987. “I said to Ali, ‘We have to open something like this in our area,’ and now we have,” he says. “And in just the few months, we’ve been open, we’ve gotten tremendous feedback and support from the community.” One of those supporters is a young Freedom High student named Sammy who is getting ready to appear on MTV’s series “Made,” where one high school student per show has his or her greatest fantasy brought to life. “Apparently,” says Kevin, “every time Sammy has met with the show’s

producers, they say he’s had them take him to You Say When. He’s definitely going to give us some great word of mouth when his show is air.ed.” Speaking of word of mouth, my favorite flavors at You Say When are the Reese’s peanut butter, island banana, Hershey’s chocolate and the extra-creamy dulce de leche. You Say When offers all sorts of chocolate and candy toppings, from Heath bars to

some sort of “exploding” fruit candy, but the real hot fudge and caramel are a must — at least for me, they are. You won’t find bananas in the toppings area, though. Every Day Is Cinqo De Mayo At Vallarta’s In Wesley Chapel! By Gary Nager Cinqo de Mayo will be held this year on Saturday, May 5, which means that popular Mexican restaurants like Vallarta’s Restaurante Mexicano in the Wesley Chapel Village Market (on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. at S.R. 54) will be even more packed than usual that Saturday night. But, why wait until May 5th to check out Wesley Chapel’s most popular and most affordable Mexican restaurant, when Vallarta’s is open and serving huge portions of great food every day (except Sunday) for lunch and every day for dinner? My buddy Fabian Jimenez at Vallarta’s, which is celebrating its tenth Cinqo de Mayo in the middle of its eleventh year at the same location in the Village Market, knows he will be packed for that most famous of Mexican holidays, “So, we hope everyone will visit us before Cinqo de Mayo.” The place is already crowded for dinner most nights (and is getting known for being a quick, value-conscious lunch, too), but Fabian says Cinqo promises to be “crazy fun.” Fabian’s uncle started the original Vallarta’s on N. 56th St. in Temple Terrace and is a partner with Fabian in two

54

of this Tampa-based family “chain” of seven restaurants all using the Vallarta’s name. Among the other locations are two in Lutz, U.S. Hwy. 19 in Palm Harbor, N. Dale Mabry Hwy. and Anderson Rd. in Carrollwood. Fabian says he is proud of the number of regular customers the Wesley Chapel location has who come back multiple times each week for the atmosphere, the cuisine and the great prices. Although I try to limit my intake of hot tortilla chips, Vallarta’s puréed tomato salsa is never overpowering (some people I know add a little hot sauce to it) and washing that down with an ice cold Dos Equis or Modelo cerveza (and/or a shot of an upscale Don Julio or Patron tequila) is definitely required for me at Vallarta’s, which boasts a premium, full-liquor bar and also serves a variety of frozen drinks. Among the appetizers I enjoy at Vallarta’s are the huge Grande Quesadilla (stuffed with chicken and half with beef tips, plus refried beans and served with guacamole & sour cream) and the shredded pork tacos de carnita. I never order nachos myself (too filling and fattening for my taste), but one fellow patron at the bar said she always comes back with a girlfriend to share the nachos with beef and beans.

Yes, Vallarta’s has very popular enchiladas, burritos, tacos, combination meals, vegetarian entrées and child’s plates, but this meat lover keeps coming back to the great chicken and steak specialties, from combo fajitas to my current favorite dish, the “Vallarta’s Special” whole ribeye steak, which is topped with onions, tomatoes and bell peppers, and served with rice, beans and flour tortillas. I also enjoy the grilled pollo a la parilla, which is perfectly grilled and served with rice, a guac salad and tortillas, and the batter-dipped pollo empanisado, which doesn’t need its side of nacho cheese dipping sauce. In other words, you really can make any day Cinqo de Mayo at Vallarta’s of Wesley Chapel! Enjoy the fiesta! Vallarta’s is located at 5335 Village Market, near Beall’s Outlet. For reservations and more info, call 9075161. Or, visit VallartasTampa.com to reach other Vallarta’s locations.

Photos (clockwise from above left). The shredded pork tacos de carnita are served with a green tomatilla sauce. You always get great service from the friendly staff at Vallarta’s. One of our editor’s new favorite dishes is the Vallarta’s Special ribeye steak.

Neighborhood Nibbles - Cinqo, Mother’s Day, Burger Monger & More! By Gary Nager If you think there’s no place in New Tampa fun enough to be worth hanging there for Cinqo de Mayo or anyplace nice enough (or with good enough food) to host your intimate Mother’s Day dinner (or full-blown party), here’s some really great local ideas for you.

Cinqo de Mayo

OK, so it’s not an American holiday and it isn’t even Mexico’s Independence Day, but Cinqo de Mayo is a fun excuse to enjoy a few cervezas and/or a few shots of Patron and celebrate the victory of Pancho Villa and the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the FrancoMexican War. You can, of course, take a ride up Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. to Wesley Chapel and enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine and live music at Vallarta’s Restaurante Mexicano (see story on page 54), but, if you want to enjoy a great meal and/or a fun party atmosphere, I have three other suggestions for you — starting with the best authentic Mexican food in New Tampa (which just also happens to be an awesome sushi bar, too) at Jalapeño Mexican Grill (14913 BBD, in the Oak

Ramble Plaza; Visit JalapenoTampa. com or call 977-0800), or join the always-great food and well-dressed crowd and festivities from 5 p.m.-close at Ciccio’s Lodge (16023 Tampa Palms Blvd., in City Plaza; Visit CicciosLodge.com or call 975-1222). For me, a visit to the ninth annual Rotary PigFest (see story on page 1) earlier in the day is a must, too. You also can check out The Brass Tap (2000 Piazza Ave., in the Shops at Wiregrass mall; Visit BrassTapBeerBar.com or call 991-4343), where you can enjoy $4 Coronas and Corona Lights all day and live music beginning at 9 p.m.

Mother’s Day

Both Jalapeño and Ciccio’s Lodge also are great destinations for your Mother’s Day bash on Sunday, May 13, but we also suggest making reservations (to guarantee seating) at Sushi Tsu Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar (15363 Amberly Dr., Shoppes of Amberly, Tampa Palms; Call 910-9404 or visit SushiTsu. com), which is open to treat Mom between 1 p.m.-10 p.m. Two other delicious Mother’s Day choices are both in the Cross Creek Center plaza (at the intersection of

Cross Creek Blvd. & Kinnan St.). The first is Saffron Indian Cuisine (10044 Cross Creek Blvd.; Visit SaffronIndianCuisine.us or call 6003315), which is offering a delicious Mother’s Day brunch, beginning at 11 a.m. The other is Café Olé (10020 Cross Creek Blvd.; Call 907-9242). where you can earn much love if you bring mom to one of two incredible Flamenco shows (seatings at 6 p.m. & 8:30 p.m.) and enjoy Café Ole’s evenbetter revamped menu under original owner Frank Aliaga. You’ll get your choice of three appetizers, three entrées and three desserts, plus a glass of draft beer, house wine or soda, all for just $39.95 per person, plus enjoy a truly exciting and entertaining evening of dance.

Burger Monger Opens; More To Come In Wesley Chapel Burger Monger - I had never tried the original location on N. Dale Mabry Hwy. in Carrollwood, so I was looking forward to the opening of Burger Monger in the former

Panchero’s location, in the same section of the Shops at New Tampa plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. as Bonefish Grill. And so far, I have to say I am a fan of the 100-percent Akaushi Kobe beef hamburgers and the grilled chicken sandwiches — both available with more gourmet toppings than I can possibly list here — as well as the tasty skin-on, hand-cut fries at the Monger. The place isn’t cheap, but it is yummy, immaculate-looking, the order-at-the-counter service is quick and it is nice to be able to have an affordable ice cold beer with your burger, too. Burger Monger is located at 1656 BBD. For more info, call 9914242 or visit BurgerMonger.com. Baja’s & iCream - I don’t currently have a lot of information about the two signs that recently went up on BBD opposite the under-construction Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, in front of the same plaza that already is home to Dickey’s BBQ and The Hungry Greek, but both Baja’s Fresh Mexican Grill & iCream are apparently up-and-coming franchises originally from other parts of the country hoping to cash in on our area’s much-needed new hospital. We will keep you posted as these two new eateries get closer to opening.
