New Tampa Woman Reunites With Her Rescuers One Week Later By John C. Cotey The moment may be over, they say, but it is never forgotten. Rarely does a day go by that four strangers — Sam Harris, Maurice Rolle, Lisa Missana and Shane Mitchell — don’t think about that one Thursday morning, around 7:45 a.m. on March 31, when they came together at the intersection of New Tampa Blvd. and Meadow Pine Dr. in West Meadows. Each played a pivotal role. In just a few minutes time, they managed to cobble together the smarts, verve and guts to act selflessly and swiftly, to enter dark waters, to pull someone from a gray Ford Mustang that had sunk to the bottom of a retention pond. On May 4, they will be honored by the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners. “I don’t know about your religious beliefs or what you believe in,’’ says Sam, “but (L.-r.) Sam Harris, Lisa Missana, Marla Zick, Shane Mitchell and Maurice Rolle got together at there was something happening that day.” Stonewood Grill & Tavern a week after the quartet of rescuers pulled Marla out of her car as it ++++++ sank in a retention pond just east of the Gateway Bridge in West Meadows. A 32-year-old carpenter, Shane pulled his Nissan over and hopped out. He saw Maurice near the water. While Sam was retrieving a rope from the trunk of his car, Shane had a wincher — a motor-driven or hand-powered drum around which rope or a chain is wrapped and used to move heavy loads — on the front of his. “I just thought we would pull the car out,’’ Shane said. “I didn’t think anyone would be going underwater.” Maurice grabbed the hook at the end of the wincher chain and walked into the water. He was roughly 20 yards from the car, but the water was getting deeper with every step. After a few steps it was up to chest, and Maurice couldn’t see the car well enough to have an idea where he would be attaching the hook. ++++++ Lisa was just a few minutes behind Shane on Meadow Pine Dr., on her way to drop her 14-year-old son A.J. at Family of Christ School in Tampa Palms, when she saw the car in the pond. At first, she grabbed her phone and started taking pictures. “Oh gosh,’’ she says she told her son, “that person better get out of that car. Then, I realized Shane and Maurice were yelling at somebody in the car.”

Hargreaves III Is Headed To The NFL, But Where? By John C. Cotey The best high school football player in New Tampa history is about to become the highest-drafted National Football League (NFL) player in New Tampa history. Former Paul R. Wharton High star defensive back Vernon Hargreaves III, who went on to a standout career at the University of Florida in Gainesville, is expected to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, which will pick the first round on Thursday, April 28, beginning at 8 p.m. Hargreaves will attend the draft, which runs through April 30 and is being held at Roosevelt University’s Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. While other Wildcats football grads have flirted with the NFL (linebacker Larry Edwards was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buffalo Bills in 2007, and linebacker Josh Jones played in some preseason games for Jacksonville in 2012), none has had the impact Hargreaves is expected to. According to NFL.com’s analysis,
“With top-notch ball skills and exceptional instincts that drew praise from Alabama’s Nick Saban, Hargreaves possesses the football makeup to become a Pro Bowl corner.” Hargreaves — whose sister Chanelle graduates this spring from Wharton after a sterling volleyball career and who also will attend Florida — grew up in Miami and Greenville, NC, where his dad Vernon II was an assistant football coach at the University of Miami Hurricanes and at East Carolina University, respectively. In 2010, Hargreaves II took a job at the University of South Florida in Tampa, eventually enrolling his son at Wharton. Hargreaves did not play football until high school, but was clearly a natural and excelled from the start. According to various NFL draft experts and analysts, as well as most mock drafts, Hargreaves should be a top-10 pick as arguably the purest cornerback in the draft (although FSU safety Jalen Ramsey is rated a

Our Biggest Post Ever & Other Exciting News An editorial by Gary Nager So, first, the BIG news. After two years in a row of winning the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Adult Spelling Bee, yours truly reverted to his usual choking-in-spelling-bees ways, as the Neighborhood News Horrific Spellers finished in a tie for about 10th (of 23 teams) on Apr. 8, when “Kount Drakyoula” himself (see photo below, courtesy of OurTownFla. com, of one of the 20+ words we spelled correctly) misspelled the word “onomatopoeia” (I spelled it “onamotopoeia”... missed it by “that much”). The two sad facts were that: 1) I believe our team was the only one to spell all 20 words correctly during the first two rounds of this year’s bee (held again at the Tampa Bay Golf & Country Club in San Antonio), when you can “bribe” your way back into the competition by paying $10 (we got to trade in our prepurchased bribes, which you can not use in the third round) for non-winning raffle tickets) — thanks again to another couple of great assists on medical words from my teammate, event co-chair Karina Azank, M.D. (left in photo below). 2) I actually practiced that word only a
couple of hours before the event and really thought I remembered it correctly. Old age? It was still a great event to benefit the Pasco Education Foundation and the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Noon Fund (our club’s nonprofit foundation)...and hey, even the Golden State Warriors didn’t win them all this year.
And The ‘Magic’ Continues...
The photo, right, was the happiest I was the day after the Spelling Bee, as the organizers of the 13th annual Sharkbite Challenge off Honeymoon Island in Dunedin called off the “official” race on Apr. 9 due to high winds (20-30 knots) and seas (3-4-ft. waves). I did return to the Dunedin Causeway the next day, when the winds were down to 10-15 knots and the waves down to 2-3-ft., but I never quite finished the 4-mile race, at least not without swimming the kayak about a half-mile to shore after a wave knocked me out of it. It’s a long, crazy story (to which my fellow WC Rotarians can attest), but I’m still planning to do another race soon...just not without the proper kayak. Most of the 100+ competitors at the race I didn’t finish were in sleek 14-18-ft. composite racing kayaks that look like Olympic sculls. I was in a borrowed, 9-ft. plastic kayak that I now realize I was probably lucky to be able to swim to shore. Lucky? Heck yeah. After all, no one else at the race did a marine biathlon that day, right?

National Institute For Dermatology Makes Plans For New Tampa By John C. Cotey On a visit to Singapore’s acclaimed National Skin Centre in 2012, where she was invited to lecture the nursing staff and meet with the medical staff, Dr. Debra Shelby, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Ph.D., witnessed a state-of-the-art, comprehensive facility that treats 1,000 patients a day, while also serving as a home for continuing education for doctors, new technologies and research studies. Making a place like that became one of her dreams, and soon, it may become a reality right here in New Tampa. Shelby, a Tampa Palms resident, is the CEO and Clinical Director for Florida Specialty Medical Services (FSMS), LLC, located on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms, where she currently sees patients. She will soon begin building a new facility, to be called the National Dr. Debra Shelby Institute for Dermatology: Dermatology Education, on the corner of Highwoods Preserve Pkwy. and New Tampa Blvd. in West Meadows. “I wasn’t even aware the property was for sale,’’ said Shelby. “I had been looking around the New Tampa area and didn’t find anything I really liked, and this was right in front of me the whole time. It’s a beautiful piece of property.”

The 7-acre property, most of it conservation and wetlands, with 2.5 acres of usable land, has been dormant for years, following a failed attempt to build a charter school on the site in 2012. Sold for $300,000, it was originally zoned for three 2,500-sq.-ft. offices or medical buildings. Shelby said an architect is currently “reconfiguring” that plan to instead include just one 8,000-sq.-ft. building, “with a nice flow.” The land adjacent to the Legacy at Highwoods Preserve has been Board-certified in purchased by Dr. Debra Shelby, who plans to build a state-of-thedermatology (DNC) art dermatology practice and school at the site shown in red. through the DermatolResidency at USF and became the first resiogy Nursing Associadent to ever complete the program in 2008, tion, Shelby’s plan is to build and staff with qualified doctors a facility modeled after the and has learned from the best doctors while one she visited in Singapore, offering a vari- serving as a Perioperative Clinical Specialist at the Moffitt Cancer Center on the USF ety of services, including things like a pharTampa campus. macy, a shop with sun protective clothing, Shelby spent 15 years at a practice, laser-care, skin cancer treatments, aesthetics mostly in Hudson, at the Center for Deras well as a training center for doctors. matology, before scaling back to part-time The project is currently in permitting. while she founded FSMS, LLC, which pro“It will be a unique concept,’’ Shelby vides dermatology care and education. said. “We’re very excited about it.” Shelby visits most of her patients at Shelby, who has a number of specialties but says she has a love for geriatric dermatol- senior-assisted facilities. “It was always my vision to do this, but ogy, developed the country’s first Docorate being part of a practice, it wasn’t something of Nursing Practice (DNP) Dermatology

Massage Franchise Set To Open In New Tampa Center
Massage Green Spa, a national spa chain, is opening a new location in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza at the site formerly occupied by Dine or Dash and La Cubanita Café. Live Oak resident Todd Phillips is one of the owners. He says he hopes to have the new spa open by mid-June or early-July. Massage Green Spa bills itself as an affordable luxury spa offering massage therapy, skin care, nail care and “internal care with the latest technology of our infrared saunas.” Phillips says infrared saunas are “all the rage in California” because they offer all the health benefits of a sauna without the stifling heat and atmosphere of traditional saunas. “A little bit more modern,’’ Phillips said, “with greater effect.” For additional information, visit MassageGreenSpa.com.

FHWC’s $78-Million Expansion Moving Forward & Ahead Of Schedule By Celeste McLaughlin On any given afternoon, the emergency department at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC) can get pretty busy. With all of the people living in and near Wesley Chapel and choosing FHWC for their care, sometimes every emergency room (ER) bed is full and the staff has to get creative to accommodate all of the patients who need to be seen. So, it’s a good thing that the hospital’s expansion is already well underway. In December, FHWC’s emergency department will expand from 18 rooms to 35, which is, perhaps, the most vital part of a $78-million expansion that is adding three floors and 111,993 square feet of new space to the hospital, which already is 200,000 square feet. “This expansion is important, so that we can continue to provide excellent care for folks in our community,” says FHWC director of marketing Tracy Clouser. “We are blessed that the community continues to choose us and we are adding space to better serve those patients.” FHWC originally opened in 2012 with a plan to expand in five years or more, but due to the need in the community, the expansion began much sooner than initially anticipated. Because the hospital was designed to be expanded, construction of the new space – which started last August – has moved quickly. The hospital includes three wings, referred to as the North, Center, and
6
South wings. The current expansion adds three stories to the Center Wing and adds a three-story “connector wing,” called the “Southeast Connector,” between the Center and South wings. In the Center Wing, patient rooms are being constructed on the fifth and sixth floors, while the fourth floor will remain a “shell” for future expansion. Clouser explains that the plan was to open two floors and keep one for future expansion, so the decision was made to leave the fourth floor shelled to minimize the disturbance to hospital patients on Floors 1-3 during construction. In addition to new emergency
and patient rooms, the expansion allows FHWC to add more doctors, especially in orthopaedics, providing more physician choices and more procedures available to people in the community. Also, when the expansion is complete, the hospital will have a new gym for in-patient rehab, so patients will no longer have to do rehab in their rooms or in the hospital’s hallways. Additional observation rooms will be opened for both pre- and post-op patients. Other changes include the operating room for women who have to undergo a Csection being moved up one floor, so that patients no longer need to be transferred by elevator to the mother/ baby unit.

The hospital’s central energy plant also is being expanded to accommodate FHWC’s new footprint. Clouser explains that if there is a power outage, all medical essentials plugged into the hospital’s red plugs will come back online immediately. Non-essentials, such as computers, will come back on within seven minutes.
A Work In Progress
Every day, about 200 people are working on FHWC’s expansion. On the day the Neighborhood News toured the construction areas, crews were putting in HVAC ductwork and starting drywall in the three-story addition to the Center Wing. Pre-cast concrete panels were being

Some of the innovations in the heart “cath” lab include a “tilt and cradle table,” allowing doctors to move the patient for scans or procedures without having to prop them up with towels, as they would on a table that doesn’t tilt. Everything in the lab is on booms, so that all of the equipment can be moved easily, in whatever configuration the doctors need it. The expansion construction will be completed in October or November of this year. The building will open in December, once inspections by Pasco County and hospital authorities have been completed.
Renovations, Too
As part of the construction, more than 10,000 square feet of the hospital’s existing space is being renovated. One renovation that’s already complete is the new heart catheterization lab, which includes accommodations requested by cardiologists who specialize in electrophysiology,

“The original hospital design was very intentionally created to be a healing environment,” says Clouser. “We have lots of natural light and open space, with inviting colors, artwork that depicts scenes of nature, and lots of plants and trees visible from both patient rooms and waiting rooms.” Some of the plants and trees are growing in FHWC’s two healing gardens, located in the hospital’s courtyards, although one is currently used for construction and will re-open when the renovations have been completed. Clouser explains that FHWC’s healing environment will be continued throughout the new construction, too. Just like in the current hospital, many details that may not be apparent to visitors have been intentionally done to protect patients. “For example, the building’s sprinkler heads are built into the ceiling so they don’t collect dust,” says Clouser. “In our intensive care unit and emergency depart-

ment, the blinds are inside the glass so they don’t collect dust.” She also says that the hospital has two elevator systems so that visitors don’t share elevators with patients. “This is both for patient privacy and to protect patients from germs.” FHWC is located at 2600 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in Wesley Chapel. To learn more about the hospital, visit FloridaHospital.com/ Wesley-Chapel or call 929-5000.

Those Who Serve Again Benefit From Noon Rotary’s Bike Rally By John C. Cotey More than 60 riders turned out March 19 at the Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. entrance to Flatwoods Wilderness Regional Park for another successful “Cycling for our Vets, Military & First Responders” — the third annual bicycle “rally” hosted by the New Tampa Noon Rotary Club. “It was another great turnout,’’ says current club president and longtime member Valerie Casey, whose club meets Wednesdays at noon at Café Olé on Cross Creek Blvd. “We had a lot of new riders and interest, and more than last year. There were riders of all ages, and, as always, it benefited a great cause.” This year’s event, which took off from Chili’s Grill & Bar, located at 17643 BBD Blvd. (just south of the BBD entrance to Flatwoods), raised $3,500 to help benefit the Navy Seal Foundation, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Support the Troops and the Stay In Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center. Romy and Gabriela Camargo, who run the Stay In Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center (located at 10500 University Center Dr., south of E. Fowler Ave.) were on hand to encourage the riders, who had their choice of distances to bike — 4, 18 or 39 miles. Also participating again was long-time New Tampa
8
resident and former Stanley Cup-winning Tampa Bay Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk. In three years, the event has attracted nearly 200 riders and raised about $18,000. “We’re already planning for next year’s event,’’ Casey says. “We’re hoping to tie it in with the return of the Taste of New Tampa.” For more info about the great organizations that were the beneficiaries of this year’s bike ride, visit NavySealFoundation.org, HCFRFoundation. org, OurTroopsOnline.com or StayInStep.org. Meadow Pointe To Be Home To A 55+ Community Focused On Serenity By John C. Cotey
When good friends and Tampa Bayarea doctors Krishna Nallamshetty M.D., and Seenu Sanka, M.D., envisioned a place their parents could live their later years in, they imagined a calm and peaceful setting, people with shared interests, an active and vibrant community with trails to walk, fitness rooms to exercise in, places where they could worship and meditate and partake in the vegetarian lifestyle they have enjoyed their entire lives. Beginning in June, that’s exactly what the two physicians plan to build in Wesley Chapel’s Meadow Pointe community. Anand Vihar, which means “Blissful Living” (according to its website), promises to be the premier 55+ adult community in Tampa Bay. It will be one of the only +55 adult communities in Wesley Chapel. It will be built on a 50-acre site on Mansfield Blvd., less than 100 yards north of where the road currently dead ends (as we reported about again last issue) and is surrounded by large conservation and ponds. Drs. Nallamshetty and Sanka, who searched for the right place for two years before enlisting the help of another friend, Santosh Govindaraju, the CEO of Convergent Capital Partners (CCP), hope to break ground on Anand Vihar this summer. Eric Isenbergh, the CEO of Oxford Homes, has joined the team as the property’s builder. “I think it’s a phenomenal area to be in,’’ said Govindaraju, whose company fo-

He said CCP has put more than half a billion dollars into redeveloping places like Carrollwood Golf Club (previously Emerald Green Golf & Country Club) and a number of hotels and commercial properties. This is the company’s first foray into Wesley Chapel. Govindaraju said he was able to secure a great price for the property. The deed, he says, will show the partners paid $25,000 for the land itself, but because the previous owners chose not to pay taxes on it — the recession stalled a previous project on the property — the new owners had to pay off liens on 87 lots, at a cost of $11,000 per lot. According to Govindaraju, multiple banks owned parts of the parcel, but none had any interest in developing it and allowed it go delinquent. “It was a very fragmented ownership,’’
he said. “We diligently put it back together.” The roads, parking areas, utilities and detention ponds were all constructed in 2006, after the previous owners had received approval for 330 townhomes and condos. Three of the buildings in the southeast portion of the project were constructed, with 24 apartments that currently have residents and eight townhomes that don’t, but any further development came to a halt. The existing buildings and roads will remain, with a new one planned near Anand Vihar’s soon-to-be-built, 17,000-sq-ft clubhouse. CCP plans to invest $5 million into the project, building 280 units and incorporating more green space. “We are very excited,’’ Govindaraju said. “There’s so many great things happening in this area. We want to contribute to the success at Meadow Pointe by creating more upscale opportunities, and increase

the value of them by investing more in these properties.” Although the project appears to be targeting the existing Indian community in our area, Govindaraju says it’s more about a lifestyle than people of any particular origin. “We will be targeting more of a healthy living lifestyle,’’ Govindaraju says, noting that the Anand Vihar clubhouse will have an exclusively vegetarian kitchen (non-vegetarian meals will be catered on a weekly basis), a yoga room, a multi-faith prayer and meditation room and a theater room to watch the latest Bollywood (and other) movies. “We will also have a full-time activities director, and I think that will also set us apart,’’ Govindaraju says. Anand Vihar already has 30 reservations, he added. For more information, visit AnandViharTampa.com, or call 534-4127.

By Gary Nager Just when you thought the Wesley Chapel area couldn’t handle any more growth, here we come with two shiny new maps showing as close to everything that’s currently either in or rumored to be in development in and around zip codes 33543, 33544 and 33545. On this page is a map (right) of the area (mainly) between I-75 and Old Cypress Creek Rd., which shows the ongoing development of the Cypress Creek Town Center Development of Regional Impact (DRI), as well as a possible new development directly to the west of the Walgreens and Shell gas station off S.R. 54, just west of where it meets S.R. 56 and Old Cypress Creek Rd. And, heck yeah, it’s a lot of exciting “stuff” (see pg. 3), especially if you’re looking for new places to eat (and who isn’t?). In addition to the eateries we’ve previously told you about — including the recently opened Culver’s of Wesley Chapel and the nearly-completed Cheddar’s — the longawaited Chick-fil-A has gone vertical between Culver’s and Cheddars. Further west of Culver’s, a Panda Express Fast Casual Chinese is getting ready to build just west of the corner of Grand Preserve Dr. and S.R. 56 (in front of the Tampa Premium Outlets mall, or TPO). Three more restaurants are being added (and all are somewhere in the development process) east of the intersection of the new Grand Cypress Dr. and S.R. 56 — BJ’s Brew-house, McDonald’s and Longhorn Steakhouse. And, directly across S.R. 56 from Longhorn are a planned Pollo Tropical and a possible (see below) Ford’s Garage. Further west on that north side of S.R. 56 (in the “Regency Shopping Center,” although the entire center still has to be called “rumored” here because no agreements were finalized at our press time) is a possible Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers. Speaking of these “rumored” projects, Lisa McCaffrey — the managing director of retail services for Colliers International (which is managing much of the property located north of S.R. 56 between Wesley Chapel Blvd. and I-75) — told me a week after this map appeared on our website (on Apr. 7) and in our Wesley Chapel issue (which hit on Apr. 8) that there may be some inaccuracies in what we’re showing as “rumored” here, although she said she, “couldn’t confirm or deny any of them.” She added, however, that, “We should be able to make some official announcements soon.” The information about the parcels marked as “rumored” were put together by our editorial department through our contacts

Also indicated on the map on this page east of I-75 is a new Chase Bank that is being built between Chili’s and the Bank of America, a rumored Popeye’s Chicken on land between the existing Wesley Chapel Village Market and I-75, as well as the now-confirmed location of Lexus of Wesley Chapel, which will be built by the Williams Group next to the Williams-owned Toyota of Wesley Chapel. And, west of I-75, you’ll find the location of the Aldi grocery store, which is beginning development shortly off Oakley Blvd., behind the Shell gas station/ Circle K on 54. Also indicated, across from The Grove shopping center (behind the Sleep Inn), is the recently announced 40,000-sq.-ft. FreeFall Zone entertainment complex, which according to developer Craig Patel, will include trampolines, laser tag, rock climbing wall, bumper cars, arcade games, party rooms and food concessions. The plaza will be 12,600-sq.-ft, with spaces starting at 1,200 sq. ft. The Dowd website says the plaza is expected to open in the “Spring of 2016,” but considering that nothing has gone vertical on the property yet, that seems more than a tad ambitious. The delay may be due to the ongoing discussions about the planned 581/BBD Bypass Road, which has existing businesses on BBD south of S.R 54 concerned about how they will survive if the thousands of cars that normally drive past their location on their way to turn onto 54 headed east or west will be diverted to the Bypass, a half mile south of their location. The good news is that JD Porter of the Porter Family and Dowd President & CEO John Dowd, III, will be the featured speakers at the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC)’s Economic Development Briefing on Thursday, April 28, 11:30 a.m., at Pebble Creek Country Club (10550 Regents Park Dr., off BBD). WCCC CEO Hope Allen, who helped me get some of the information for the maps in this story, says Dowd and Porter are expected to talk about both the Wiregrass Shops on SR 54 and the Wiregrass Commons on SR 56, as well as some of the other plans for the DRI.
This map of the area east and just west of where I-75 and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. meet S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel also includes several confirmed and rumored projects.

New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Flatwoods To Get A Makeover
Since earlier this month, the Hillsborough County Conservation & Environmental Lands Management department has been having staggered trail closures for construction inside Flatwoods Wilderness Regional Park. Workers are providing maintenance to the park’s entrance roadways and the 7-mile loop trail. They also are grading the roadway shoulders and repaving the trail surface. Construction on the north loop began April 18 and runs through May 27, when it will reopen. The south loop will remain open during its construction. The south loop will begin maintenance on May 30 and will be worked on through July 8. The parking areas at Morris Bridge Rd. and Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. are both expected to remain open during all construction. For more information, visit the Flatwoods Wilderness Regional Park trail page on the Hillsborough County website at HillsboroughCounty. org, or call 987-6211.
Construction Worker Killed On BBD

The accident occurred at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and Lake Forest Dr., where Hendrix was part of a crew installing wiring for traffic lights during the widening of BBD “Segment A” (from Palm Springs Blvd. in Tampa Palms to E. Bearss Ave.). Police were notified at 1:21 p.m. and Hendrix was pronounced dead at the scene. Hendrix, 37, was a Spring Hill resident. Spivey Construction is located in Odessa.

Wesley Chapel Man Killed in OTB Café OK After Break-In Maryland Triple Shooting
Avid Georgia Bulldogs fan and Wesley Chapel resident Chad Daniel was shot and killed in a triple shooting Easter Sunday (Mar. 27) in Maryland, in what authorities said (in a published report in the Baltimore Sun) may have been a case of mistaken identity. Daniel, 44, was a truck driver. He was making a routine stop at a truck stop in Jessup, MD, when Howard County police say Jacinto Del Prado, 52, shot him and another man, Warren Anthony Weeden of Baltimore, who survived the shooting. A memorial fund for Daniel Chad Daniel has been set up at GoFundMe.com/ChadDaniel2016 and had already raised nearly $13,000 less than three weeks after it was established. Daniel leaves behind two children and fiancé Kandy Korte and her two daughters. His son Kyle is 20 and serving in the military (currently stationed in
Dirson De Mesquita, the owner and chef at Only The Best (OTB) Delights Café, located across Bruce B. Downs Blvd. from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel), is asking for your help. At 12:06 a.m. on Easter Sunday, an individual broke into his café and did about $700 worth of damage. The suspect, who was wearing only a pair of shorts and dark-colored gloves (photos, right), was caught on surveillance video attempting to smash the glass front door with what appeared to be a large potted plant. He makes two attempts, failing each time, before leaving for about 30 seconds and coming back with another object, which he throws through the glass door. Once inside, the suspect goes around the counter only to find the cash registers open and the drawers empty. On the way out, he apparently grabs something off the wall before fleeing. OTB re-opened, as always, the next day (Monday) and had a new door installed by Tuesday afternoon. “A lot of people thought we were closed for those two days,” De Mesquita

The New Tampa Family YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. For 25 years, this event has been celebrated at YMCAs across the nation. This year, the focus of this free event – open to everyone in the community – is to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active, especially as the summer months approach. This year, after several years of participating in one central event for all nine Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA branches, the New Tampa Family YMCA will host its own Healthy Kids Day celebration. Located just off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. next to Compton Park in Tampa Palms, the New Tampa Y will open its doors to the community for a variety of fun activities, all encouraging families to focus on an active lifestyle. “The New Tampa YMCA is here to support families in healthy lifestyle choices,” says membership director Jill Godfrey Rupp. “Everything you will see and experience at Healthy Kids Day will reflect that.” Godfrey Rupp says there will be a bounce house, face painting and lots of crafts and activities for kids. They can sample activities to get a feel for some of the Y’s summer day camps (see pgs. 35-37), as well as camps offered by vendors, including LEGO learning activities provided by Bricks 4 Kids. There also will be games led by camp counselors, and sports led by youth coaches. The day will include wa-
ter safety information and activities, and the chance for families to sample wellness classes, such as the popular “family boot camp” classes. The childcare area for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, known as the “Kid Zone,” will have a parachute activity for those ages. Vendors such as doctors, dentists – including New Tampa Pediatric Dental – and even the New Tampa Regional Library, will help families see how to make healthy choices in many areas of their lives. “We look at it from a whole healthy lifestyle perspective,” explains Godfrey Rupp, saying that healthy kids need to both be active and make healthy food choices, and also be actively engaged in learning in a way that’s fun. “We want to show families how they can make those choices.” Since Healthy Kids Day is open to the entire community, non-members can get a glimpse of the amenities available to those who join the New Tampa Y. Members were recently emailed a survey asking about their experiences and the improvements they would like to see. Last year, those survey results led branch leadership to add an additional group exercise room and expand group exercise classes to include Barre, boot camp, Active Older Adults and more. This year’s survey will help drive the next round of improvements at the Y. The New Tampa Family YMCA is located at 16221 Compton Dr. For info, call 866-9622 or visit TampaYMCA.org/locations/New-Tampa. — CM

I want people to know that it is our muscles and tendons that bring our bones and joints together and that by taking the tension out of the muscles, we can relieve the tension being put on our joints.” SaRee explains that most knee problems, for example, are caused by overly tight adductor, hamstring and quadriceps muscles, and can often be eliminated by working the muscles surrounding the knee until they are pliable and supple. “The same is true of any joint in the body, including the joints in between each vertebrae of the spine,” SaRee says. “If you are suffering from slipped, bulging or herniated discs and you have the associated muscle

We also rarely pay attention to the influence that food and stress play on our bodies.” SaRee realized she enjoyed caring for people while working in a nursing home during high school, and as soon as she turned 18, she says she signed up to learn how to be a masseuse at Sister Rosalind’s Schools & Clinics of Massage in St. Paul, MN. After completing her professional massage certification there in 1997, she worked for a spa and fitness center in Cottage Grove, MN, and went into private practice at the age of 25. She ran her practice, Just for You Massage, for nearly seven years, both in Minnesota and in Miami, FL, where she moved so her then-husband could attend law school, and eventually to Tampa. Today, she lives in New Tampa where her children attend Paul R. Wharton High and the Turner/Bartels K-8 school. Until her son became old enough to start school, SaRee says she had been treating patients out of her house, but after the littlest one started school, she felt ready to rent a room and open a formal practice where she could set up her equipment. She has worked out of her current office since November 2015. Right now, she rents just one room in

SaRee also has taught massage at her alma mater and at some of her former employers, including the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, where she trained masseurs and wrote protocols. She has also taught nurses in labor and delivery wards, and in fact, an aspect of her practice that is very close to her heart is prenatal, postnatal and labor massage. SaRee has trained as a doula – a trained professional who provides women with physical and emotional support and guides them through pregnancy, labor and post partum -- and is certified by Chicago-based DONA International. She loves to accompany clients to labor and delivery rooms. “One of the biggest problems women have in the labor room is feeling alone,” she says. “I’m there with them as if it’s my own labor. Our bodies know exactly what to do when fear doesn’t run away with (them).” SaRee does not accept insurance, but offers a 25-percent savings for the first treatment. Massages can last from 30 to 120 minutes; a 60-minute massage costs $74. She accepts cash, checks and credit cards, but says her biggest reward comes from relieving the discomfort or pain of a client. “I love it!,” she says. “I’ve been doing it for 18 years and I still love it. It really makes me smile inside.” Barefoot Massage is located at 8903 Regents Park Dr., Suite 130, across from Barewood Furniture. There are no hoops to jump through when visiting Complete Primary/Urgent Care, near Florida Hospital Tampa, west of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. on E. There is one office manager, Amy, a friendly and familiar face to the regulars. And, there is Dr. Korivi, the lone doctor in an office he says strives for efficiency. “Patients will always see me personally,’’ Dr. Korivi says, “not a nurse practitioner. And, when people call for their lab results, Amy can just turn to me and I can talk immediately to the patient.” Quick service, however, should not be mistaken for bad service. Korivi points to ZocDoc.com, a website and app that helps patients find and rate doctors. Korivi has a 4.5-star rating out of 5, and virtually all of his reviews cite a positive experience. First In Tampa Bay Real Estate Continues Mary Ann Diorio’s Legacy By Celeste McLaughlin Mary Ann Diorio was one of the first advertisers in the New Tampa Neighborhood News. For two decades, she advertised her property management business on these pages. After a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Mary Ann passed away in September 2015. Her husband, Nick Diorio, and daughter, Jolene Baldwin, are continuing Mary Ann’s legacy through their business, which is called First in Tampa Bay Real Estate and uses the website MaryAnnRents.com, finding tenants for property owners in New Tampa and the surrounding areas, and managing properties for those owners. our clients have stayed with us since she passed away.” Mary Ann’s way of handling her clients set the standard for how Nick, Jolene and Astrid now continue running the business. “Our tagline has been, ‘We manage your property properly,’ and that’s what we do,” Nick says. “Mary Ann was always honest and straightforward. For example, she’d rather give you her honest opinion, even if she risked losing the business when a client didn’t hear what they wanted to hear [about what their property is worth on the rental market].”
‘Priced Right & Shows Well’
“If a property is priced right and shows well, it’s going to rent right away,” Nick says, warning that asking for too much rent can backfire on a property owner. “If you let it sit for a month, you’ve lost that rent (for that month).” First In Tampa Bay Real Estate recently listed a 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home in Hunter’s Green for $2,950 per month. It was rented in 6 days for a monthly rent of $2,850. “We’re coming into the busy season because people are starting to look now so they can move when school gets out,” says Nick. “But, even in the middle of winter, a house will still rent if the price is right.” As for showing well, when the Realtors at First In Tampa Bay Real Estate take on a new client, they give their professional opinion as to what needs to be done, usually easy fixes such as painting or removing wallpaper. “Making a small investment often makes a big difference,” Nick explains. “We give you advice to get the price you want.
If you don’t want to do these things, you might get less, and your home might be the last one rented.” When a renter moves in, a member of the First In Tampa Bay Real Estate team does a walk-through via video to record what the property looks like. When that tenant moves out, another walk-through is conducted to determine what needs to be corrected before the property goes back on the market. “This provides proof to both the owner and tenant of the condition of when they moved in and when they move out,” says Nick. Someone from First In Tampa Bay Real Estate also checks on each property in person at least once every six months, to check on the property’s condition. Checklist items include being sure sprinklers are on, air filters have been changed, and there are no bugs, since pest control is normally the responsibility of the tenant. First in Tampa Bay Real Estate currently manages about 90 properties. “We’re not a large company,” says Nick, “so we’re able to offer personalized services, but we have the benefits of a larger company because of technology.” He says this includes a 24-hour emergency phone number that is always answered. “It’s not about the number of accounts we have,” Nick says, “but about having accounts that are happy with us.” First In Tampa Bay Real Estate is located at 9385 N. 56th St., #312. Hours are Mon.–Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with other hours available by appointment. For more information, go to MaryAnnRents. com, call Nick at 417-9575 or email nick@nickdiorio.com.

Shuayb Laser Dental — Top Dental Technology Plus Personalized Care! By Gary Nager If you’ve been told you need a dental implant, the area’s best technology meets caring, experienced dentists at Shuayb Dental, which has two offices in Spring Hill, one in Brooksville and one in the Oak Ramble Plaza (same plaza as Acropolis Greek Taverna) on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just south of Tampa Palms. Dr. Mohammad Shuayb, D.M.D. (Doctor of Medical Dentistry) first opened his practice in 2000 in Hernando County, and it was only five years later that his brothers and fellow D.M.D.s — Omar and Mujib — each opened their own dental offices within a few miles of their brother. Three years ago, Omar opened the Shuayb Laser Dental location on BBD and two years ago, Mohammad opened an office near his new residence in the newest section of Tampa Palms. He closed the Tampa Palms location a few weeks ago — “There was just no walk-in traffic at that professional park,” Mohammad says. “But here, we’re between Acropolis and Mr. Dunderbak’s, so a lot more people can find us.” All three brothers now split time between the three offices in Hernando and the New Tampa location. All three Shuaybs also earned Bachelor’s degrees from the University of South Florida in Tampa and their D.M.D. degrees from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University. With the three brothers at the forefront of the business, Shuayb Dental is obviously a family-oriented practice, but with technology to rival and even surpass

to go over the implants.” Lasers are a big part of many of the dental services at every Shuayb Dental office. The Drs. Shuayb utilize lasers for everything from treating periodontal (gum) disease to drilling and filling. For gum treatments, the laser replaces the usual scalpel and sutures, which reduces bleeding, minimizes swelling and recovery times and Mohammad says that in some cases, there’s even been regeneration of healthy bone around the teeth. And, he says that for many fillings, the focused laser beam can replace the drill, often without the need for anesthetics. The laser technology can even assist with tooth whitening procedures. The CEREC system helps the Shuaybs place crowns with laser precision in a little more than an hour. This dental restorative system also allows the dentist to remove defective amalgam fillings and place cosmetic veneers in just one appointment. It eliminates the need for patients to endure messy, uncomfortable impression materials or wear temporary veneers, sometimes for weeks at a time. The office also offers dentures, bridges, tooth extractions and non-surgical root canals, as well as Invisalign orthodontics. In order to build the reputation at the New Tampa office, the Drs. Shuayb are offering Neighborhood News readers who mention this article or the ad on pg. 11 of this issue a full dental implant for only $2,800! And a full, laser-fitted crown costs only $599.

“Both of those are significant savings over our regular rates and won’t last too long,” says Dr. Mohammad Shuayb. “And, we know you’ll be happy with the quality of our work.” Shuayb Dental has three offices, one in Brooksville, two in Spring Hill and the New Tampa office (above), located at 14954 Bruce B. Most patients Maulik Bhalani, M.D., and Navdeep Jassal, M.D., see at Florida Pain Medicine on Windguard Cir. across from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC) are like you would expect to be visiting a pain clinic — people who are suffering from back, neck and joint pain. Others have more serious conditions, like poor recovery from back surgery, painful diabetes complications and cancer. The treatment, however, may not be what you expect. At Florida Pain Medicine, patients are met with a measured and restrained approach that stresses interventional pain management. “Start-to-finish pain care,’’ as Dr. Bhalani calls it. Patients generally will not be prescribed any controlled pain medications on the first visit. The doctors are careful to give a full exam— a surprising fact for many patients who have been to other pain medicine doctors — and look over imaging X-rays and notes from the referring doctor. Florida Pain Medicine techs also will run a urine drug screen on every patient. At Florida Pain, alternatives to stronger prescription drugs — like local anaesthetic injections (an epidural, for example), anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy or weight loss programs — are often recommended to relieve pain. Sometimes, treatment merely means better opioid management, ice and injections un-

VIP Pest Control Will Treat You & Your Home Like VIPs! By Celeste McLaughlin
If pests are bugging you, turn to the experts at VIP Pest Control. Vicki Hutto owns the company, which is celebrating 10 years in business this year. VIP Pest Control serves Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and surrounding areas in Pasco and Hillsborough counties, keeping homes and businesses free from insects – including termites, mosquitoes, ants, roaches, bed bugs and more – with treatments that include both traditional chemical and kid-friendly and pet-friendly organic options. VIP also handles problems with nuisance animals such as rodents and snakes. In 2006, Hutto established VIP Pest Control with a goal of providing a higher level of customer service than other local companies. She says she chose to name her business “VIP” to indicate that to her, customers are, “Very Important People.” That’s why, for example, you’ll always talk with a live person when you call VIP’s office. “We give our customers personal attention,” explains Hutto. “No two people are alike, and no two houses are alike.” Same-day service is often available, especially if you have a serious issue that needs immediate attention. “If you call us in the morning,” says Hutto, “we can usually work you in that day.”

time on the floor, so the treatments they use must be safe for all members of the family. That’s why VIP technicians offer many organic options, and Hutto says you won’t be charged a premium for using those organic products. Hutto and her entire staff – including technicians and those who work in the office – are armed with experience, training and information, and take continuing education courses annually. “We need to be knowledgeable when we’re talking with customers,” explains Becky Wanamaker, VIP’s office & marketing manager. “We try to educate our customers, because the more knowledgeable they are, the better job we can do.” Hutto says that being a womanowned business also sets her apart in the pest control industry and helps her to better relate to many of her customers. “Most times when we visit a home, it’s the woman who is there to meet with us,” she says. The VIP Pest Control crew now includes a female technician and Hutto says she is always looking to hire female technicians. Prior to launching VIP Pest ConVIP Pest Control owner Vicki Hutto wants to keep your home as safe for your family as she trol, Hutto worked for Orkin and says keeps hers for her beloved pomeranian Chloe. she was the first female termite inspector in the entire company. at two smaller pest control companies. Her early career included management and marketing at various vocational schools, including what are now known as ITT Technical Institutes and the Texas College of Medical & Dental Assistants. Here are some of the many pests Hutto says people are calling her company about now:
Keep Safe from Zika With Mosquito Control — Hutto explains that Florida has seen cases of the Zika virus, and notes that mosquito control is important, because the best way to not get the virus is to avoid being bitten by the mosquitoes that can transmit it. VIP offers organic lawn treatments to keep mosquitoes away. Technicians apply it to lawns either monthly or every other month, depending upon the type of treatment and your lawn’s specific needs. Tawny Crazy Ants — An insect you may not be familiar with yet – but Hutto says you probably will be soon – is known in the industry as a tawny crazy ant.
@NTWCNews
Hutto already has experience eradicating these ants, for customers including Trena Reynolds. Reynolds had ants “going wild all over the place in my kitchen,” and the sprays and other treatments she bought at the grocery store weren’t getting rid of them. “That’s when I called Vicki,” Reynolds says. “She took care of them right away.” Reynolds says she has continued to use VIP Pest Control for both insects and termites at her home and in her investment properties. “Vicki is professional and her technicians are always prompt,” Reynolds says.
VIP Pest Control technicians make sure to take care inside and outside your home.
“They hit Jacksonville last summer and experts are predicting they will hit us in spring this year,” Hutto says. “And when they do hit, they’ll hit by the millions.” Hutto says tawny crazy ants are attracted to electricity, so they’ve been known to destroy computers and TVs. “They destroy things, and they can take over your house,” Hutto says. She explains that often, it can take several months to get the problem under control. “In 20 years, I’ve never seen anything else like this,” she says.
Neighborhood News
Termites — Everyone living in Florida should be aware of termites, both subterranean and drywood. Hutto says right now is swarm season for subterranean termites. If you see a swarm of bugs, that’s a sign you have termites you can’t see eating the wood of your home. At that point, Hutto and Wanamaker emphasize the importance of calling a professional. “When that swarm is gone and you no longer see them, you still have termites,” says Wanamaker. “They eat 24 hours a day.” When a VIP technician comes out to your home to inspect for termites, they’ll help you determine what condi-

tions in and around your house might lead to termites. For example, termites have easy access to your home when you have mulch up against your house, tree branches or plants touching the house, or wood-to-wood contact. You can help keep termites away from your home by reducing these “conducive conditions.” Bed Bugs — Hutto says as summer approaches and people travel more, VIP often sees an increase in cases of bed bugs. But, bed bugs aren’t transmitted just when people travel. “Anytime someone’s stuff is touching someone else’s stuff – such
as backpacks at school – that’s an opportunity for bed bugs to be transmitted,” explains Vicki. So if you see black spots in a bed – a telltale sign of bed bugs – be sure to call an expert. You also can check VIPPestControlLLC.com for a wealth of information. Hutto notes that, although they can be difficult to find and eradicate, the experts at VIP can help you get rid of bed bugs with minimal headaches. VIP Pest Control has recently moved and is now located at 119 Flagship Dr., off U.S. 41 in Lutz. It is open Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.– 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit VIPPestControlLLC.com or call 234-8888.

‘Heroes’
Continued from pg. 1 Maurice had returned to shore, and he, Sam and Shane were coming up with another plan. But, there wasn’t time — the car began to sink. “I could see her face, I was screaming to her that someone was coming,’’ Sam recalls. “All of the sudden, the car went to the bottom of the pond.” “Never in a million years did I think that pond would have drank that car like that,” Maurice says. The nose of the Mustang went first, thrusting the back end into the air, where it then slowly disappeared from sight. “Three bubbles came up, and it was gone,’’ Lisa says. “It was total chaos.’’ Maurice says. “The electricity at the point was crazy. Everybody was just in shock. Lisa was saying something, people were screaming, stuff just went by so quick...I looked over at Shane, and he was going into the water.” Lisa was not far behind. She ran around the pond on the other side, slipped off her flip flops and in her jeans and a black Chicago Blackhawks shirt, jumped into the pond. For a brief minute before she jumped in, all she could think about was all the photos her friends had sent her by text over the years of the two alligators that lived in the pond. Once in the water, Lisa swam to the car and tried to get her bearings. She placed her feet on the roof of the car to determine where she was. The rest, she says, is kind of a blur. She remembers focusing on the driver’s side of
32
the car. Luckily, Marla had been driving with her window down. “I always drive with my window down,’’ she later told Lisa. “Drives my mom crazy.” This time, it saved her life. +++++ Shane and Lisa took a few turns unsuccessfully trying to get Marla’s seat belt unclasped. Four, maybe five times each. Neither can remember exactly. Had Shane not been getting over a cold, he says he may have been able to save Marla in one trip. He had dived for lobster and been spearfishing, free-diving 20 feet and staying under with no problem. On this day, however, maybe from the combination of his cold and adrenaline, he couldn’t seem to get a deep enough breath. The water was green and murky, Shane says. And the car was not visible. “Shapes and shadows,’’ he says. “I was just feeling around for door handles and everything.” Lisa came up from the water and screamed to the onlookers to find a knife or
scissors, to cut the seat belt. She doesn’t remember who brought her scissors, she just remembers sticking them in her back pocket. But before she could make another trip below, Shane emerged from the water and told her he had freed Marla from the seat belt. It was time to go pull her out. “Let’s do this,’’ Shane said. Together, they sank back into the water, but when they reached for Marla, she wasn’t there. Unhindered by the seat belt, she had floated to the roof of the car and towards the passenger side. Once they figured out what had happened, “Shane grabbed her by the waist, I grabbed something, and we pulled her out through the window,’’ Lisa says. Shane and Lisa may not remember how many times they dove under, but they knew why — “I saw somebody dying,’’ Shane says. In real time, the rescue lasted no more than two minutes, Sam says, maybe even only 90 seconds. But, “It felt like an eternity,’’ Shane says. “I remember when I stopped to catch my breath, I was just thinking, ‘Oh my God, if I don’t get her out she is going to die. I can’t stop.’ It felt like such a long time, and I dove so many times.” Maurice was in shock, waiting for Shane and Lisa to emerge with a body. He was ready to jump back in if he was needed, but he worried that his failed attempt to hook the wincher to the car was Marla’s best shot. “The deal was, I was like, ‘God, please don’t let this girl die,’” Maurice says, “because I couldn’t get to her.’’ When they got her to the surface, Lisa and Shane turned Marla on her back. “She looked dead,’’ he says. “She was purple and blue and pale.”

Marla was frothing at the mouth, but was still alive. Tampa Police Department (TPD officers helped pull them to shore, and medics tended to Marla before taking her to Florida Hospital Tampa. “We have the best police department in the nation,’’ Sam says, a sentiment shared by the others, thanks to TPD’s quick response. Lisa and Shane slumped to the ground. “I remember my thighs hurt so bad,’’ Lisa says. “Absolutely spent and exhausted,’’ Shane says. Lisa and Shane had the same thought as they looked out to the pond, to where the car had settled. Was there anybody else in there? Was a child strapped into a seat in the back? Had they done enough? Lisa waited until the car was pulled out, to see with her own eyes. She was overwhelmed with relief when police told her the Mustang was empty. Afterwards, Lisa would shower until there was no more hot water, drive up to school and give her son a big hug. +++++ A week later, the entire group — Marla, Shane, Lisa, Maurice and Sam — met for the first time since the incident, for dinner at Stonewood Grill & Tavern, located a mile or two from the scene of the accident. It was a therapy session, of sorts. Lisa brought booklets for each person, with all the pictures she could find taken at the pond. Together, they pieced the story back together. The rush of adrenaline and the power of impulse and instinct had left many holes for all four of the rescuers. “Dinner definitely helped everybody,’’ Sam says.

Marla did not remember anything. She told them that one minute she was driving to get a cup of coffee at the Dunkin’ Donuts on Highwoods Preserve Pkwy., and the next minute, she woke up in a hospital. For Maurice, dinner was closure. He had been troubled since that morning, and meeting Marla and talking with his fellow good samaritans helped clear his mind and his conscience. “Thinking that somebody could have possibly died and you didn’t get to them that first go around,’’ he says. “That’s tough.” The attention he received afterwards had overwhelmed Shane, an otherwise private person. But, in the darkened, comfortable confines of Stonewood, he found some peace reliving the moment. It also helped him piece together the story. “It’s a lot to come to terms with,’’ Maurice admits. Lisa, who still gets recognized in public, and even thanked by strangers, learns something new every day about the event. She says she is haunted by what could have been. Re-telling her story, she cries at certain parts. “There’s a lot of ‘what-ifs,’” she says. “What if we didn’t get her out? What if she died? What if something went terribly wrong and my husband was planning a funeral and my kids didn’t have a mother? There’s just so many things.” Lisa spent many of her summers growing up in Chicago working as a lifeguard, but never imagined she would use those skills

years later. “It’s just all surreal,’’ she says. “This is something that is going to stay with me for a lifetime.” Maurice, Shane and Lisa still drive by the pond daily, taking their kids to school, going to the grocery store, heading to and from work. In the past, Lisa might look over and see if any alligators were sunning themselves, but otherwise, no one paid it much attention. Now it’s hard not to look and stare... and remember. Something special happened that day. “A spear fisherman, a former lifeguard, a barber and a real estate agent, all coming together, (each) with a role and a purpose,’’ Sam says. “It turned out wonderful.”

Stories & Laughs A Perfect Mix For The First PHSC History Fair grew up, is sometimes a bittersweet thing Story & photo by John C. Cotey Quinn Porter Miller and Stephanie Black shared amusing and poignant stories about their families, steeped in Wesley Chapel ranching history. James Touchton showed off a few of the jewels of his massive collection of Florida maps. And, on a night devoted to local history, librarian Angelo Liranzo showed how to find out even more about it by searching the internet. If that wasn’t enough to satisfy the taste buds of the 50 or so history buffs in attendance in the conference center on Mar. 31, local author Madonna Wise brought homemade cookies for those who attended. Wise was the inspiration for the first annual Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) History Fair, a successful event at the school’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch on Mansfield Blvd. in Wesley Chapel. Wise, the first speaker of the night and author or Images of America: Wesley Chapel, originally approached new PHSC Porter Campus Provost Bonnie Clark about launching her new book on campus. From that idea sprouted an even bigger one. “When we saw what was in the book and the amount of history she had dug up... we thought we should wrap it around something bigger,’’ said Clark, who is already looking forward to the second History Fair next year. Wise began the night by sharing some of the history she uncovered in writing her book, a 128-page collection featuring hundreds of photos and stories shared by longtime local residents whose grandparents and

(Wise great grandparents helped settle the area. She told the audience, “When my notes in her book that James H. Porter got publisher (Arcadia Publishing/History Press) the nickname “Wiregrass” from Dade City first asked me to write a book on Wesley Buick dealer Ed Madill, who would send Chapel, I said, ‘I don’t think there’s any him a box of matches every Christmas to history to write about.” burn the wiregrass on his ranch.) But, Wise found there actually was a lot Miller choked up when telling the story of history to write about, and the families about her father Don attending the Univerof Miller and Black lived through much of sity of Mississippi on a baseball scholarship, it. Miller, whose brother and founder of the where he was an All-American, and how Wiregrass Foundation J.D. to observe, both “wonderful and sad at the same time.” Miller also said that she wishes her grandfather, who passed away in 2003, could have seen what his land, and the surrounding Wesley Chapel area, has become. “I don’t know that anyone could have known how the area would grow,’’ she said. Black’s grandfather, Lonnie Tucker, was a close friend and hunting buddy of “Wiregrass” Porter. For those who called Tucker, “the meanest man in Pasco County,” Black quipped, “they should have seen my grandmother.” Tucker apparently did have a soft side, however. Black said when she was in the fourth grade, she volunteered to bring food to a school function, and she asked her hardscrabble farer of a grandfather if he could give her two large watermelons. He asked what time she needed them, and showed up to her school with two large watermelons...and a truck loaded with smaller ones for anyone who wanted one. Considering the theme of the night was mostly frontier-era Wesley Chapel, the internet connection failing during Liranzo’s presentation was cause for a few chuckles. But, once connected, Liranzo showed the crowd how to access, as an example, digitized versions of Dade City going back to 1912. Summing up the night perfectly for many of the older members of the crowd, Liranzo said, “It’s history for me, but these are all memories for those who grew up in Pasco County.”

notch higher on most boards). ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, in one of his most recent mock drafts, has Hargreaves going No. 14 overall to the Oakland Raiders. “Hargreaves lacks some measurables, but the tape doesn’t lie,” Kiper wrote, alluding to the one knock on the former Wildcat — his 5-foot-11, 207-pound frame. That did not stop Hargreaves, though, from earning all-Southeastern Conference honors every year as a Gator, nor does the former Wildcat see that as a negative. “Playing in the SEC, I’ve covered Amari Cooper (currently with the Oakland Raiders), I’ve covered Odell Beckham (New York Giants), Jarvis Landry (Miami Dolphins) and Kelvin Benjamin (Carolina Panthers),’’ Hargreaves said at the NFL Draft Combine last month. “You gotta compete. At the end of the day, it’s all about competing. Height, size, that doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, if you can play ball you can play ball.” Hargreaves can certainly play ball. He was an All-State pick every season he played at Wharton, and excelled everywhere coach David Mitchell put him. On special teams, he returned kicks when called on and blocked a handful of field goals and extra point attempts. He also filled in at quarterback and wide receiver, rushing for 237 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior and adding 313 yards and three more touchdowns receiving that same year. “He could do it all,’’ Mitchell said. It was as a lockdown corner, however, that Hargreaves achieved fame, with nine

career high school interceptions and more than 203 tackles while twice earning AllAmerican honors, winning two national titles on Team Tampa in 7-on-7 and earning MVP honors as a senior at the prestigious Under-Armour All-America Game in St. Petersburg. Hargreaves was a freshman starter at Florida, and a sensation his first two seasons. He proclaimed himself to be the best cornerback in the country prior to his junior season, and went out and totaled 33 tackles, 4 interceptions and 4 passes defended. So, where will Hargreaves, who is lauded for his quick-twitch athleticism, aggressiveness and 39-inch vertical jump allowing him to get his hands on passes intended for taller wide receivers, be drafted? While Kiper (and CBSSports.com) has him at No. 14 in mock drafts, Kiper also said on a national conference call that Hargreaves could be in the mix to go to the Baltimore Ravens at No. 6. Drafttek.com says Hargreaves will be taken 8th by the Philadelphia Eagles, WalterFootball.com has him going No. 10 to the New York Giants, and SBNation.com has the Chicago Bears taking him at No. 11. Chances are, however, that local fans of Hargreaves are hoping that NFL.com analyst Charles Davis and Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks are correct: They both have Hargreaves lasting until the No. 9 pick, where the hometown Tampa Bay Buccaneers could address a glaring need and snatch up the local kid. The NFL Draft will air live on the NFL Network, with Round 1 on Apr. 28, 8 p.m. Rounds 2-3 will be held Apr. 29, and rounds 4-7 will be held Apr. 30.

Hunter’s Green Kids Plant Flowers & Memories For Nick Wolf straight days in the Christina took him to school to By John C. Cotey Nick Wolf loved butterflies. His parents, Christina and Jim, raised them in the family’s patio garden. He and his younger brother Scott learned almost everything about them, and loved to share little tidbits of information about butterflies whenever they had the chance. Last year, as a brain tumor ravaged the fifth-grader’s body, but never his spirit, and the end was near, Christina told Nick that when his time came, to remember to send messages from heaven via butterflies. Thanks to almost 70 former and current students, teachers, friends and family, some of those message-carrying butterflies may actually land in a perfectly manicured garden behind Hunter’s Green Elementary, where Nick attended school. Teacher Cheryl Pahl led a contingent of earnest gardeners on April 9 in building and planting the Nick Wolf Memorial, a butterfly garden behind the school near its athletics track just off Cross Creek Blvd. Christina planted the ceremonial first plant, a pentas, as Jim and Scott looked on. “I know this is how he would want to be remembered,’’ she said. Pahl has not only spent the past 15 years helping children to grow in her role as one of the gifted class teachers at HGE, she has done a pretty good job in school’s garden as well. Tomatoes, beans, and kale — lots of kale — have sprung forth from a dozen or so raised beds she and her students monitor (and steal a healthy treat or two from on occasion). Pahl said she was honored to help plant some memories for those who knew Nick. Built with money left over from last year’s fifth-grade fund raiser, the garden was tilled and ready to go when friends and family showed up at HGE on Saturday morning.

“He just knew how to light up a room,’’ said Alexa Trafficante, a former math and science teacher at HGE who taught Nick in the fourth grade. “He always came in with a joke to tell you. He even had a smile if it was the day after a chemo treatment. That’s why I think a butterfly garden is the best way to show our love for him.” Nick was experiencing headaches and nausea in May of 2011 when Christina took him to the doctor. In just a week after that first visit, as Nick continued suffering from unbearable pain, he was diagnosed with a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) on the right side of his brain and headed into surgery, followed by months of radiation and chemotherapy. He spent 89

hospital. “All he wanted to do was get back to school,’’ Christina recalled. Although he suffered permanent hair loss after six rounds of chemotherapy and 31 radiation treatments, Nick appeared to be winning his battle. “Yes, he got some stares, but that didn’t bother him at all,” Christina said. In September of 2014, an MRI showed no indication of cancer. However, a few months later, Christina said, the tumor had returned. Nick also was fighting hemolytic anemia, an abnormal breakdown of red blood cells in which they are destroyed and removed from the bloodstream, a condition likely caused by the amount of chemotherapy he received. Maxed out on radiation treatments, there was sadly little left for Nick to do. “Nick was a fighter,’’ Christina said. “After he found out it came back, he cried for a bit but he said, ‘I’m not giving up.’” Nick continued to talk about the future. He wanted to buy his own laptop when he got older. He wanted to know what kind of car he was going to get. The fact that he continued to press on with such a devastating tumor amazed doctors.
exchange valentines at HGE in 2015. She says Nick was able to complete many of the items on his bucket list — he swam with dolphins, rode on a motorcycle, served as an honorary team captain for the USF baseball team and got to go on a Disney Cruise with his family. He was still fighting and defying the odds, until on April 12 of last year, following a seven-hour seizure, he slipped into an unconscious state. He survived another month before finally passing away at age 11 on Mother’s Day. “Aside from that last month, even knowing what his condition was, he always had a smile on his face,’’ Christina says. “He just had an amazing attitude.” That is what many who helped plant the butterfly garden will remember about Nick, and why so many showed up to help. To attract monarch butterflies, the gaggle of gardeners planted plenty of milkweed, which is the only thing monarch butterflies eat, Paul said. The group also planted plumbago and cassia, a flowering tree that attracts caterpillars. “If the caterpillars eat the tree, and it has yellow flowers, the caterpillars will be yellow,’’ Pahl said. Parsley, dill and penstemon were also planted, all of which are feeding plants for caterpillars, as well as butterfly weed. Pahl hopes to add a citrus tree, since butterflies like to lay eggs on citrus trees. A brief ceremony followed the planting. A plaque with Nick’s name on it was placed in the garden, and butterflies were released by Christina into the sky. Most of them headed right for the fresh plants. Others landed on giggling children who had helped plant the garden. Some, Christina likes to think, may have even been carrying messages.

New Tampa Artists On Display At ‘Possibilities Of Perception’ By Celeste McLaughlin
For more than a decade, New Tampa artists who want to spend time with other artists — encouraging and learning from each other — have joined the North Tampa Arts League (NTAL). Tampa Palms resident and artist John Henne was the founder of the group, which was formed when the Hillsborough County Arts Council Advisory Committee wanted to create an arts league in the New Tampa area in 2005. The group has maintained at least 50 members, including Henne, every year since then. Geographically, it includes all of North Tampa, from New Tampa in the east to Carrollwood in the west, with some artists from Wesley Chapel and southern Pasco County also participating in the group. It meets monthly at Compton Park in Tampa Palms. Henne is one of at least five New Tampa artists whose work will be displayed at the group’s annual membership show, entitled “The Possibilities of Perception,” which begins May 1 at the Carrollwood Cultural Center (CCC). Fellow New Tampa residents and artists who have already committed to the show include photographer Steve Sparks and painters Dorothy Banker, Sherry Carter, and Robin Grace. Carter is one of the group’s newest members, having just joined in March, although she has lived in West Meadows for 11 years. The five pieces she will display at the show are all landscapes, painted in oil. “It makes me happy to paint,” she says, “I

900° Woodfired Pizza Wiregrass — Try It For The Pasta, Too!
Insalata della Casa
Tortellini della Casa By Gary Nager
DO YOU CRAVE
great pasta living here in New Tampa? I know I do. I can enjoy the pasta at most local pizza places, but you’d be making a big mistake if you were to confuse the made-to-order pasta at 900° Woodfired Pizza, which is located nest to Orangetheory Fitness in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, with anyplace else in our area. Owner and long-time West Meadows resident Steve Falabella — who can trace his roots back to Italy but who was raised in New York and is a die-hard Yankees fan (as a Tampa Bay Rays fan, I definitely won’t hold that against him, especially when we finish ahead of “dem bums from da Bronx” this season) — appreciates the way I talk about his pizza and pasta, but especially the pasta. The sauces on the pasta are so good, I had to show you three of them on these pages, including the featured Tortellini della Casa above, which is spinach-and-cheese-

filled tortellini in a sautéed tomato sauce with black olives, chopped garlic and fresh spinach; the penne with pesto Genovese and grilled chicken; and the veal and beef tortellacci (oversized, beef & veal-stuffed pasta pockets in a classic Bolognese meat sauce). One thing I love is how 900° Woodfired never oversauces the sizable, reasonablypriced portions of always-al-denté (without asking for it) pasta. Just as you’d find in authentic Italian restaurants from Naples to New York, the bowls glisten with what’s left of the sauces, rather than leaving behind a whole bowlful of sauce. I love dipping, say, 900° Woodfired’s homemade garlic knots, in flavorful sauces as much as the next guy, but pasta should never be swimming in sauce — or overcooked. The penne with pesto Genovese and chicken is actually a “Create Your Own Pasta,” which can be spaghetti, penne or tagliatelle (long, flat ribbon pasta, similar to fettuccine) and gluten-free also is available, with your choice of five sauces — pomodoro (classic tomato), Bolognese (meat), Alfredo
(butter and cream), pesto Genovese (basil and pine nuts) or rustica (Bolognese with chopped shitake mushrooms and garlic). I can vouch for all but the rustica.
Don’t They Have Pizza, Too?
You got ‘dat right! I love the fact that 900° Woodfired Pizza has not only excellent traditional New York-style ‘za, but also the woodfired Neapolitan style and even a notto-be-confused-with- Sicilian-style Grandma pizza that Steve says is really a pizza “made backwards. The fresh garlic and onions are baked into the (rectangular) crust, then covered with fresh mozzarella and garlicky tomato sauce.” You have to at least try it. And, although no super-thin-crusted woodfired pizza will ever be my favorite, you have to appreciate the quality ingredients Steve and his happy, dedicated crew use to create these flash-baked pizzas. “We make the mozzarella for the woodfired pizzas here every day,” he says proudly. There’s also “Create Your Own Pizzas,” where some customers get really creative,

pizza by the metre and (of course) by the slice — but it’s almost too many options for a true pizza lover like me. Of course, 900° Woodfired has other great items available, including a variety of great salads — from a slightly spicy Caesar to the unique Insalata della Casa pictured on this page, which combines spring mix, cherry tomatoes, thick slices of fresh mozzarella and marinated grilled eggplant in yummy balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. There’s also calzones, baked lasagne, foccaccia bread and great antipasti (appetizers) like Il Gran Piatto, a big plate full of authentic Italian meats, plus fresh mozzarella, olives and roasted peppers. There’s also a fried ravioli appetizer, a zesty bruschetta, fried calamari, mozzarella sticks and even a great kids’ menu. And yes, catering is definitely a specialty, too. There’s even Peroni Italian beer on draft, as well as a variety of bottles beers and wines by the glass and by the litre-size carafe. Although I’m usually too full to enjoy dessert at 900° Woodfired Pizza, there’s

Try Tarek’s Café In Tampa Palms For Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner! By Gary Nager If you love great food at very fair prices and you haven’t yet visited the new Tarek’s Café & Grill, located actually at our former address in the Shoppes at Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms, although most of the space that is Tarek’s today was previously the Spices of India market. At any rate, although his restaurant is a newcomer to the Tampa Palms dining scene, Tarek is no stranger to a lot of New Tampa residents — his original Tarek’s Café has been a fixture on the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus, just south of Fletcher Ave. off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., for 25 years. “I’ve actually been in this business 40 years,” says Tarek Elsayed, the owner of the two local Tarek’s Cafés, which are two totally different types of places. The USF Café is geared to busy college students and faculty members, but Tarek warns that it is still “much more than just a sandwich shop.” Even so, the Tampa Palms Tarek’s is spacious, with room for 140-150 seats (there’s a little more than 100 inside right now) and attractive wood booths. But, the menu is significantly more geared towards the sit-down audience — local residents who want a truly delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner in a casual setting. “We have all of the local proms and graduations happening now,” Tarek says. “Bring those parties over here. We want and can handle your group.”
48
I’ve only enjoyed breakfast at the Tampa Palms Tarek’s twice so far, but I didn’t post a pic of my favorite breakfast to date — the cinnamon French toast with crusty white bread — because I didn’t think my pics did it justice. If you want to see a great pic of one of his yummy breakfasts, check out the Tarek’s ad on page 46 of this issue. Tarek says that virtually everyone who has tried his corned beef hash has raved about it. “I hear it’s the best in this area...anywhere...all the time,” Tarek says proudly. “If
it’s not, I’ll finish it for you.” As for lunch and dinner, my favorite dishes so far are the braised (“for seven hours,” Tarek says) beef short ribs and smashed potatoes featured on this page, the “Ooey-Gooey Ragout” (ask Tarek to describe it for you), the blackened (or grilled) grouper with buttery rice and perfect French-style green beans (top left on next page), the uniquely spicy Israeli-style couscous (available as a side; top right), the turkey bacon (middle left; no pork products

are used at Tarek’s) cheeseburger, and the totally decadent, indescribable Oreo “balls” covered with rich white chocolate (bottom left). They’re like the chewiest, most delicious brownie bites ever. I also love the mini-baklavas Tarek is holding bottom right and he usually has other great desserts, too. There’s no alcohol served at Tarek’s Cafe (15345 Amberly Dr.), but it is open Tues.-Sat., 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and 7 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. Call 252-3238 or visit Tarek’s Café.com.

The Latest & Greatest News About Dining, Shopping, Retail & More In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel! Ambays Breaks Ground On ‘Transformations Center’
Congratulations go out to U.S. Army Reserve Lt. Col. and plastic surgeon Raj Ambay, M.D., and his wife, dermatologist Aparna Ambay, M.D. (2nd & 4th from the left in the photo , right), the owners of both Ambay Plastic Surgery and 360 Dermatology in the Summergate Professional Park (behind Sam’s Club on S.R. 56). On Mar. 28, the Ambays held a Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) groundbreaking ceremony at the site of their new Transformations Aesthetic Center, which will be located a couple of miles away, off Cypress Ridge Blvd., behind Tower Radiology Center and the New Tampa Surgery Center. The day may have been dreary and rainy, but the rendering of the future building, which they hope to open by the end of this year, promises that it will be a one-stop shop for all of your plastic surgery, dermatology and other health and beauty needs. We’ll provide a more in-depth update about the Transformations Aesthetic Center in a future issue. For more info in the meantime, see the ad on pg. 13 of this issue or visit

...Signarama, Apr. 14!
If you missed the Apr. 14 Grand Opening & multi-Chamber ribbon-cutting celebration held at the new unified location for Signarama of New Tampa/Wesley Chapel/ Lutz (at 1917 Passero Ave., just off S.R. 54 in Lutz), I just have to say that it was both one of the best — and best attended — Grand Opening events this reporter has ever seen...and I’ve seen a few! Owners Beatriz and Rob Hiller and their amazing staff received an outpouring of love from about 200 people, including many elected officials and Chamber and
Rotary friends from New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Central Pasco, Zephyrhills, Dade City and Carrollwood (to name a few). Those who attended also received an outpouring of free, delicious food from six different providers — including local favorites like Little Italy’s and Latin Twist Café and new favorites like the gourmet tapas and Basque fusion cuisine from Kaixo Tapas Gourmet (photo above, right) catering — as well as a pouring of delicious wine samples from our friends at Time for Wine. There also were dozens of free prize drawings with DJ John Jay of Finest Deejays (JohnJaytheDJ.com) hosting, and lots of warm wishes for Signarama’s new, combined sales and maufacturing office in Lutz, as the Hillers closed their location on BBD in Wesley Chapel (next to NutriSmart). “We started with us and two employees,” Beatriz told the energetic crowd. “Today, we are at 26 employees and still growing, so thanks to our amazing staff and all of our wonderful friends, clients and Chamber and Rotary members.” For more info, stop in to take a tour of the new Signarama, call 994-0101

Social Media Delivers A Connection In Search For A Kidney Donor For Joey By John C. Cotey
Can a hashtag save someone’s life? Count Wesley Chapel mom Dana Richman as a believer, after a Facebook and Twitter campaign she started in January helped find her son Joey, a 22-year-old pre-med student at the University of South Florida, a living kidney donor. Mike Miller, a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter known by friends as “Muffin Man” who lives just outside New Tampa in the USF area, saw a #AKidneyForJoey post on Facebook, stepped forward and offered his kidney. After a battery of tests to determine if Mike was an accurate match, the surgery was scheduled for April 20. Joey suffers from Alport’s Syndrome, a genetic condition that Dana says was passed down from her side of the family, which has suffered a number of deaths from the condition. Alport’s Syndrome causes hearing loss and renal failure. Joey first suffered hearing loss in the fourth grade, but doctors could do little to help, Dana says, until he went into renal failure, which has taken root in the past year. Dana took to social media to try and save her son. “I was on Facebook at work during lunch, just scrolling around to kill time and came across the page,’’ Miller says. “I just opened it as something to read, and the moment I did I was hooked. I saw a lot of my family in them.” Miller, who has a 3-1 record as a MMA pro and was scheduled to fight for a title

in July on a Real Fighting Championships card, won’t be resuming his fighting career after the kidney transfer, and that’s fine with him. “I had a lot of fun doing it, but it’s not like I wanted to be in the UFC or a full-time fighter,’’ says Miller, who works as a foreman with Helicon Property Restoration in sinkhole remediation. “I made up my mind the first few moments I read it on Facebook. 20 and the months to follow. She says Joey will be isolated after surgery for 3-6 months, but hopes to be well enough to return to classes at USF in August. “He will feel amazing, probably back to how he felt in elementary school,’’ Dana says. “He’ll be able to do everything other people his age can do. I have goosebumps already just thinking about it.” Dana said she was stunned by the outpouring of support for her son’s plight. She says Miller is “the most humble, respectful young man you’ll ever meet.’’ She is also quick to thank the dozens of folks who called Tampa General Hospital (TGH) to volunteer for testing when the story broke. She says TGH received up to 40 calls a day, and many are still volunteering to be Joey’s back-up if the transplant fails for any reason. A host of others, she added, asked to be matched up with others needing transplants. “Amazing,’’ she says. “That makes me happy.” Miller says he did worry, after initially agreeing to donate the kidney, that he might be sacrificing “for a jerk.” But he has become good friends with the Richmans, a relationship forged over a spaghetti and meatball dinner when they met. A week before the surgery, he was cooking out steaks and drinking beer at their home. To donate to the Richman family, visit GoFundMe.com/AKidneyForJoey.
