Maj. Chris Nocco Appointed To Replace Sheriff Bob White By Michael Smith Speculation about who would replace retiring Pasco County Sheriff Bob White was ended late last month when Gov. Rick Scott appointed one of White’s top officers, Maj. Chris Nocco, to serve out the remainder of White’s term in office. Nocco, 35, is a native of Philadelphia who has been with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) since 2009, most recently serving as head of the department’s Joint Operations Bureau. He was officially sworn in on May 2, and his appointment runs through 2012, which would have been the end of White’s third term. At that point, Nocco will have to run for reelection if he wants to remain in the position. Nocco comes from a law enforcement background, as his father and several other relatives also served as police officers, and at a press conference
announcing his appointment he told reporters that, “It was always a boyhood dream (of mine) to become a police officer.” So, while attending the Chris Nocco is Pasco University of County’s new sheriff. Delaware on a football scholarship, Nocco received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a Master’s degree in public administration. After graduation, Nocco began working as an officer with the Philadelphia Public Schools police department, and then went on to the Fairfax County (VA.) Police Department before coming to Florida, where he joined the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. That led to a job as a field director with the Republi-
can Party of Florida and then as a staff director for the Florida House of Representatives, where he eventually became deputy chief of staff for thenHouse Speaker (now-U.S. Senator) Marco Rubio, which lasted until Rubio’s term ended in 2008, after which Nocco joined the Florida Highway Patrol as chief of staff. With his political connections (his wife Bridget is a Republican Party consultant and fund raiser who also served as a lobbyist for the Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., which Scott ran for 10 years as CEO), Nocco’s appointment was not entirely unexpected. Even though a dozen potential candidates had expressed an interest in taking over for White, who announced in March that he planned to retire in order to spend more time with his family, Nocco was assumed by many to be the frontrunner for the job, especially after it was announced that he was one of three finalists interviewed by Scott and his
staff in the week prior to his selection. The other two finalists were Brian Head, who also is a major in the PCSO, and lawyer Kerry O’Connor, a former PCSO employee who left the department in 2003. Those connections led at least one local politician, former Pasco County Commissioner Michael Cox (a Democrat), to assert that Nocco received the appointment as “political payback,” (although it should be noted that Cox is working with Kim Bogart, a Democrat who has already announced his candidacy for the sheriff’s job in 2012). Nocco, meanwhile, didn’t try to distance himself from his political alliances, which also includes Florida’s next House Speaker Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel), among others. “I’m very blessed to have friends that are in high offices,” he says. “When Tallahassee has money again See “Nocco” on page 5.

A Mother’s Day Wish For My Mom & For All Moms An editorial by Gary Nager
A Mother’s Day Wish
For every Mom who has spent a sleepless night worrying about her kids when they go out For every Mom who has juggled a career and motherhood And for those who “only” worked at home For every Mom who has risked getting sick herself while nursing her children back to health For every Mom who has sat in 100degree heat, and/or bitter cold, to watch her child play soccer, baseball, football, swim, lead a cheer or dance For every Mom who has sent her child off to college ... or to war I thank you, just for being you And my one wish for every Mom Is that you will be appreciated Honored Remembered And given the credit and respect you deserve Not just on Mother’s Day, but EVERY day Even though children will ALWAYS go out, get sick And sadly, be seriously injured and sometimes killed Whether by drunk drivers or roadside bombs The one constant for the vast majority of those children Is a loving Mother Who has always held their hand Told them it would be O.K. And has been there for them,

Even though Mother’s Day is a “holiday” that was invented by a greeting card company, it’s a great day to reflect on how important moms are in our lives. My mother, Marilyn Nager, lives in Sarasota and owns a little boutique/gift shop in downtown Sarasota called, surprisingly enough, Marilyn’s, which has more vintage and antique costume jewelry, as well as hats, purses, shoes and accessories, packed (albeit in perfect order) into one small space than any store its size I’ve ever seen. It’s an amazing place for finding the perfect gift for any mom on your list (shameless plug). But, this isn’t about my Mom’s store, it’s about the woman who personally picked out and purchased every pair of earrings and Bakelite bracelet in that quaint little shop. Creating order out of chaos, always knowing what accessory to wear with any outfit and even knowing how to decorate any room are among my Mom’s many gifts. She’s also a far better salesperson than I’ll ever be, always knowing how to strike the perfect balance between giving people their space while still making sure she always makes the sale. My Mom also is the type of person who will do anything for the people she cares about. She’s been my constant supporter, both professionally and personally, since the day I was born. But, most people expect their Mom to be in their corner. On the
In other words, she’s not just a terrific Mom, she’s an amazing friend. And I’m lucky to have had her as both my entire life. Thanks, Mom. I love you. And, speaking of Mother’s Day, a lot of our dining, shopping, salon and spa advertisers in this issue have great deals on last-minute Mother’s Day gift ideas that we hope you will not only utilize, but also mention that you saw their ad in Neighborhood News! And, if you’re planning a visit to Sarasota, check out Marilyn’s (1269 1st St.; 941-544-7987).

other hand, my Mom has been there, not just for me and my sister Bonnie and every other member of her family, but also for every friend who’s ever needed her. Mom may admit to not being a great driver, but she’ll go out of her way to not only visit a sick friend in the hospital, but bring them food, pick up their mail and perform other tasks they may be in no condition to take care of themselves — sometimes every day — even though she knows some of those friends may never reciprocate, never do the same for her. And, if you tell her something in confidence, she’ll never betray you.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Church Breaks Ground On New Worship Center On Easter Sunday, the members of the congregation of the Bridgeway Church broke ground for a new worship center on the church’s property on Wells Rd., across from the Wesley Chapel school complex. According to Pastor Joel Eason, the groundbreaking, which took place on April 17, marked the 10-year anniversary of the church, which was founded in April 2001. Since that time, the church’s approximately 400 members have been attending services at 10
News Briefs a.m. on Sundays at the New Tampa Family YMCA in Tampa Palms. Eason says that the church is now in the process of getting rezoning approved for the 21 acres of land that will hold the future sanctuary, but he hopes that construction will be able to get under way by early June and that the nearly 30,000-sq.-ft. building with seating for 495 will be completed sometime in early 2012. “It’s very exciting,” Eason says. “This will really give us an opportunity to serve the community even more.” In addition to the main sanctuary,
Members of the Bridgeway Church gather at the site of their planned worship center on Wells Rd. in Wesley Chapel.

Eason says the new building will also have an 11,000-sq.-ft. area upstairs area that will be used for Bridgeway’s vibrant youth ministry, which he says is a big component of the church’s philosophy, which he described as nondenominational Christian but based upon the Bible. Teen Arrested For Several Local Auto Burglaries An 18-year-old Land O’Lakes man was arrested in mid-April and charged with a number of auto burglaries that took place in the Meadow Pointe subdivision. According to a report issued by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Ricardo Rodriguez Jr., of 24750 Blazing Trail Way, was charged with Ricardo four counts of auto Rodriguez Jr. burglary, which occurred in the early morning hours of April 11. A 15-yearold suspect was listed as Rodriguez’s accomplice, but his name was not released because of his age. Rodriguez, who allegedly admitted to his role in the burglaries, was
released from custody after posting $4,000 bail.
Vacuum Cleaner Shoplifter Arrested After Car Chase After being busted with a Dustbuster© (one of seven handheld vacuum cleaners that he was allegedly trying to steal), a Wesley Chapel man managed to elude police until his George getaway vehicle sufWhite, Jr. fered a broken axle in Tampa Palms. The incident began at around 10:30 a.m. on April 6, when George White, Jr., 39, of 1260 Nashville Dr. in Wesley Chapel, was stopped by store personnel at the Walmart Supercenter at 19910 Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. When asked about a receipt for the five vacuum cleaners he had in a shopping cart, White said that he hadn’t been given one. He returned into the store, supposedly to check with the cashier about getting a receipt, but instead, he went into a restroom and was subsequently spotted attempting to leave the store by another entrance, carrying two other vacuum cleaners. A store security officer attempted to take White into custody, but he got away from her and fled the scene, but

“Nocco” and they are able to look at different projects in different counties, I think those types of friendships and those types of connections are going to be able to make Pasco a better place and our sheriff’s office a better place.” In the meantime, however, Nocco says that he isn’t even sure that he wants to run for re-election, preferring
to focus on his immediate goals for the department, which include cracking down on so-called “pill mills” (doctors’ offices who too easily give out prescriptions for pain and other medications) in the county and improving safety at schools, while making the PCSO the best department it can be. “We want to create a world-class law enforcement agency, where people look at Pasco County and say, ‘Wow, they do things right,’” he said.
the store employees were able to provide a description of his car, a white Chevy Impala, along with its license number, to police. A few minutes later, a Tampa Police officer pulled over a car matching the description at Dona Michelle Dr. and BBD, but it turned out to be the wrong vehicle. White was then seen heading southbound on BBD, and officers caught up with the suspect in the parking lot at the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center. White drove around to the rear of the plaza and tried to get away again, but by that time, at least half a dozen marked and unmarked police vehicles had flooded the scene, along with the TPD helicopter. They quickly converged upon White’s vehicle after he broke its front axle by hitting a curb as
he attempted to make the turn from Tampa Palms Blvd. onto southbound Bruce B. Downs. According to his TPD arrest report, White left his car after he wrecked it and briefly struggled with officers, screaming that he didn’t want to go to jail. After his arrest, White, who was charged with grand theft (the total value of the seven vacuum cleaners was a little more than $344), resisting a merchant with force, reckless driving and no valid driver’s license, allegedly admitted to officers that he often stole items from Walmart and later returned them for cash. At our press time, White was being held in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond because he was still on probation after having been released from prison last December.

J.D. Porter: Wesley Chapel On The Brink Of An ‘Economic Explosion’
Wesley Chapel Chamber Update As reported many times in these pages, the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) continues to be a big part of the economic development and spirit of community throughout Wesley Chapel. The Chamber recently hired David Weiss as its new director of operations and Christine Hope as its new director of sales & marketing. Both have been actively involved in the Chamber, with Hope serving as an Ambassador, as well as the event chair for the recent “Celebration of the Arts” (see page 36). WCCC president Laura Miller,
who has been wearing all three hats for several months, says she believes the day-to-day operations of the Chamber are now in good hands, “It’ll be nice to get back to my day job (as a local Realtor, with husband Jeff),” she says. The Chamber, which also will move into its new office at The Grove (6013 Wesley Grove Blvd., off I-75 and S.R. 54) sometime next week, is fresh off a successful arts festival and sporting clay shoot and is preparing for its annual banquet and Fall Festival. For info, call 994-8534 or visit WesleyChapelChamber.com. — GN

Dr. Peggy Sterling Celebrating 15 Years Of Sterling Eye Care By Gary Nager I have known Board-certified optometrist Dr. Peggy Sterling, O.D. (Doctor of Optometry), since she opened her first location in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms way back in 1996. In the 15 years since then, Dr. Sterling has been providing quality eye exams, glasses and contact lenses for the residents of New Tampa and Wesley Chapel. The secret to her long-term success, however, goes beyond her years of experience and her expertise. Peggy is more like a trusted friend than merely a health care professional to her patients, many of whom have followed her from one location to the next. “My 15 years of loyalty to my patients definitely has helped them be just as loyal to me,” says Dr. Sterling, who earned her O.D. degree from Nova Southeastern University in South Florida. “And I will always show my appreciation for that loyalty.” Her current office, in the Brookside Professional Park off S.R. 54 (just east of the entrance to Saddlebrook Resort), is several miles north of both her original location in Tampa Palms and her second office locale in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza across from Hunter’s Green, but Peggy
says that many of her patients at that time lived in Wesley Chapel anyway. “When people get the quality care and service they expect,” she says, “they tend to find and stay with you.” Dr. Sterling hasn't always been an optometrist. Her first health care career was as a registered nurse (R.N.) and she says that prior experience has served her well as an optometrist. "I was a trauma nurse," she says. "I worked in the intensive care unit at Tampa General Hospital and managed the department at Brandon Regional Hospital. That background has allowed me to be a better diagnostician as an optometrist because I can look beyond the eyeballs to see underlying issues other optometrists might miss.” Dr. Sterling’s assistant Patricia is still with her after all these years and Peggy says, “Patricia definitely helps our patients, both children and adults, feel right at home. Boca Bargoons Can Help Give Your Home A Designer Look! By Melissa O’Brien If you’ve never been to Boca Bargoons, the fabric and design center located on E. Hillsborough Ave., near I-275, only 25-30 minutes from most of Wesley Chapel), the first thing that will amaze you is the thousands of high-quality fabric bolts in all colors and textures that almost graze the ceiling throughout the store. Some 7,000 different bolts, in fact, give customers so many creative choices that it makes it next to impossible to decide which fabric to choose. What may astound you even more, however, are the fantastic prices on the fabrics and the many accessories and services that Boca Bargoons has to offer. “We are a discounted, high-end fabric store,” says Deborah Castellano, an interior designer and design consultant with Boca Bargoons. “Whether you want to reupholster your couch or create new draperies for your home, you can find fabric, furniture and many accessories, all at reasonable prices, right here. Our showroom is filled to the brim with tapestries, silks, prints, upholstery and velvets, all exclusively for decorating your home.” Not only that, but if you do have

trouble deciding which one of the thousand of fabrics to choose from, Deborah and her team from Boca Bargoons’ in-house Hemingway Design Center can offer you advice. “Our design center is especially for our customers,” says Deborah. “We offer in-store and at-home consultations (trips to homes are charged a standard industry fee). And, we specialize in window treatments, upholstery, blinds, bedding and also have new furniture available that can be upholstered to our customers’ liking. If you’re confused about color selection or how much yardage you’ll need for a project, we are experts and can help you make the best choices for your home.” Castellano says that Boca Bargoons also offers embellishments like tassels for pillows, trim, the pillows themselves and basically anything that can be fabricated. The store even offers window treatment hardware, as well as a complete selection of new furniture that you can have re-upholstered to suit your decor. “The furniture is amazing,” says Deborah. “It is made with ‘spring down’ cushions. The springs give the upholstered furniture support, while

The store’s fabrics include such names as Scalamandre, Brunschwig & Fils, Bennison, Robert Allen, Ralph Lauren and other world-class fabrics that are renowned among the top designers of the world. If you don’t find exactly
what you’re looking for among those 7,000 bolts of fabric, there is a special section of the 10,000-sq.-ft. showroom where you can sit down, peruse special order books and find something just for you. “The owners of the company select all the fabrics,” says Deborah. “They only want to bring in fabrics that are high quality and unique. You can go to other fabric places and find the same patterns pretty much everywhere, but here you can find some things you’ve never seen before.

What’s best is that we have so much of it — and it’s all in stock, so you don’t have to pay shipping or wait for it. You can take a sample home to see if it works with your project and our pricing is so reasonable!”
Company History Boca Bargoons first opened in Boca Raton in 1984. Owners Ed and Cindy Wollstein chose the name as a play on words — the Boca for the location and Bargoons, for the outrageous bargains you can find while shopping there. Since that time, the Wollsteins have opened 12 stores in Florida (including the one in Tampa),
as well as stores in Atlanta, GA, and Scottsdale, AZ. The Tampa store has five employees, including manager John Pinto. “I’ve been the manager here for more than ten years,” John says. “We have a really great staff and they’re all so knowledgeable and helpful. You realize how lucky you are in life when you’ve always had such great people to work with.” One customer who enjoys the staff service and the fabric is Christy McGeachy of South Tampa. “They have a great selection and their pricing is excellent,” says Christy. “I’ve had the opportunity to work
with Deborah on several orders for my own home and with other friends, as well. They have a lot of in-stock items, so you get to see first-hand what the fabric looks like. I’ve had furniture reupholstered here, as well as draperies made. Everyone is very knowledgeable and very helpful in terms of what will work and what won’t.” Marti Murvin drives all the way from Lakeland to the Tampa store because, she says, “The selection is fabulous and the customer service is always wonderful. You can always depend on them and there is such a nice variety. I can find things that are unique or brand names — it’s just a
matter of what I’m looking for.” Boca Bargoons is at 1029 E. Hillsborough Ave. in Tampa, just east of Nebraska Ave. Take I-275 south to exit 47E and turn left (east). For more info, call 238-9515 or visit BocaBargoons.com.
The huge selection of fabrics at Boca Bargoons can help transform and revitalize your old, but still comfortable furniture.

Women’s Care Florida Offers Complete Health Services For Women By Michael Smith In addition to all of the health care issues that are faced by men and women alike, women also have a wide range of specialized health issues that affect only them, for which they need doctors with specialized training and experience. Women’s Care Florida is a statewide physicians group that provides those specialized services. In our area, the group is represented by the practice of M.D.s Richard Dillon, Brian McNulty, Vicar Qureshi, Kristen Segall, and Gem Ashby, who have offices in Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and the Carrollwood area. The practice was originally started by Drs. Dillon and McNulty in 1995, but Ashby and Segall, who joined the group in 2009, are the newest members of the team, and both have already built a devoted following among area women for their compassionate and caring approach to women’s health. Dr. Ashby, a native of Barbados, received her M.D. degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark before com-

Drs. Dillon, McNulty, Qureshi and Segall are all Board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and are Fellows of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), while Dr. Ashby is Board-eligible and is a Junior Fellow of the ACOG. Each of the doctors practices both obstetrics and gynecology, and that allows the practice to offer a comprehensive range of services, including infertility evaluation, counseling and treatment, prenatal and preconception care and services, and all aspects of labor and delivery; as well as general women’s health care, which includes menstrual issues, cancer testing and screening, contraception, urinary issues, sterilization, hormone therapy and more. “I like the fact that we have the ability to take care of our patients throughout their lives, from their teens through their sixties,” Dr. Segall says. In an average year, the doctors help deliver about 600 babies, utilizing the facilities at the University Community Hospital Women’s Center, but new technology also allows them to do many procedures that used to require hospitalization right in their office.

One example is tubal sterilization, a form of permanent birth control, which can now be done in-office, without a surgical incision and without the need for general anesthesia. The practice also offers in-office ultrasound exams and biopsies, when needed. Other more complicated procedures are made easier by the use of laparoscopic surgery, which also minimizes the effects of surgery and recovery, or the latest innovation, robotic surgery, which allows the doctors to perform precise maneuvers with minimal incisions. Dr. Ashby says that the benefits from such innovations include shorter recovery times, less pain and less risk of infection for the patient. The doctors stress, however, that each patient is different, and that’s why they strive to treat each one as an individual. “We treat each patient the way we would want someone to treat our mom or sister, not like a number,” Dr. Ashby says. The Women’s Care practice certainly has received glowing reviews from the ladies in the Neighborhood News office, two of whom see Dr. Ashby at the Wesley Chapel location. “She is just amazing,” says customer service manager Nikki Bennett, who recently started seeing Dr. Ashby
on a recommendation from billing manager Ashley Knoblach. Bennett says she visited several different local physicians to find out what was causing pain in her abdomen, but it wasn’t until she went to Dr. Ashby that she received some concrete answers. “She’s very caring and understanding and I really felt like she was listening to me and was able to get me going on a definite plan of action,” Bennett says. In addition to their in-office duties (each of the doctors rotates between each of the offices on a regular schedule), Drs. Ashby and Segall also will be giving a free talk on the latest surgical treatment options, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, at the Women’s Center at University Community Hospital (3100 E. Fletcher Ave., Tampa). For more information about the seminar, call (877) 482-4362. The Women’s Care Florida offices of Drs. Dillon, McNulty, Qureshi, Ashby and Segall are located at: 26823 Tanic Dr. in Wesley Chapel (929-7377); 13601 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., just south of Tampa Palms (972-9300), and at 3321 W. Bearss Ave, in Carrollwood (269-2528). For more information, visit WomensCareFL.com.

Charles Jewelers Has Built A Reputation Of Trust And Quality By Michael Smith When it comes to spending your hard-earned money, there are several instances where a strong level of trust is vital to building a good relationship between you and the people you do business with. Doctors and dentists come immediately to mind, as does your hair stylist (think about it), and then there’s your jewelry professional. These days especially, when the airwaves are full of ads from people in hotel rooms who want to buy your gold, how do you know who to trust? The friendly and expert staff at Charles Jewelers, located in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center, is a good place to start. Owner Jackie Caramatti-Tuozzo opened the business more than a dozen years ago, and she says trust between her and the customers who frequent the cozy little shop is one of the main reasons why they’ve been so successful. “In jewelry, it’s all about trust, and we’ve built our store’s reputation on trust,” Tuozzo says. One thing you can trust is that when you shop at Charles Jewelers, you’ll find a great selection of highquality rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, watches and more, from manufacturers like Simon G., House of Baguettes, Pandora, Belle ´Etoile, Michele, Bulova and others. Tuozzo says that the store sees a pretty steady market for engagement and wedding bands, especially in the spring and summer months, but the steadily rising price of gold has led

Sisters Jennifer Caramatti-Boscan and Jackie Caramatti-Tuozzo of Charles Jewelers in Tampa Palms some customers to look for alternatives. As a result, one of the hottest jewelry lines in the world right now is made by the Pandora company. The company’s products include rings, necklaces, earrings and more, but the centerpiece of the collection is the signature charm bracelets, which can be customized with hundreds of unique charms that come in sterling silver, 14k gold, Murano glass and precious gemstones. All of the Pandora items are handcrafted in a special factory in Thailand, and the jewelry makers receive three years of special training before they can work there, Caramatti-Tuozzo says. “People like them because every little charm is unique, and every charm will mean something special to the woman who wears it,” she says. Another line that has gained in popularity with the rising cost of gold is Belle ´Etoile, which is crafted from sterling silver and enamel and other materials. The line received several
nominations and awards at the 2011 JCK Jewelers Choice Awards, a jewelry industry competition. Charles Jewelers also recently added a new line of watches for women, made by Michele, which is the same brand sold in high-end stores like Neiman-Marcus and Sax Fifth Ave, and others by Bulova, which has been worldPandora charm bracelts at Charles Jewelrenowned for the quality of its ers are beautiful and customizable. products for decades. “The nice thing about the “Otherwise, the prongs can wear Michele watches is that you can switch out, and then it’s easy to catch the ring the bands to match your mood or on something, and there goes your diamond,” she says. your wardrobe,” Caramatti-Tuozzo The store also is offering cash for says. unwanted gold, and offers layaway At the same time, however, Charles Jewelers is offering discounted plans for your purchases. Fit 4 Life Celebrating Ten Years Of Making New Tampa Healthier By Gary Nager I have known Fit 4 Life Personal Training & Physical Therapy owner Travis Monday since he first opened his original Tampa Palms location just about ten years ago. Since then, Fit 4 Life has moved a two more times, including to its current (and recently expanded) location in the Tampa Palms Professional Center off Commerce Park Blvd. (behind USAA Insurance), but I am proud to say that not only has Travis been my friend, but he and his amazing staff also have been my inspiration and encouragement to lose weight when I was nearly 50 pounds heavier. He also has been a wonderful advertiser who continues to grow his business, despite the economy. Today, even though Travis and his wife (and fellow Certified Personal Trainer) Fiona have a baby of their own, they continue to nurture and even expand their company’s already outstanding menu of services. “Yes, we do personal training for both increasing muscle and reducing fat,” Travis says, “but we’re about so much more than just weight loss. Our main goal continues to be to help our clients live healthier lives, more than just about anything else.” To that end, Travis says that even if people who visit Fit 4 Life decide not to utilize the facility’s outstanding services, he hopes they will remember and try to focus on the three most impor-
tant principles of better health: 1. Don’t smoke. 2. Learn to exercise properly and how to incorporate some form of strength training (weight lifting, pushups, etc.) into your exercise regimen. Massage Therapist Natasha Palmer Provides ‘Zen In Your Den’ By Gary Nager Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Natasha Palmer says she never studied Zen Buddhism with the Dalai Lama. In fact, a creative friend of hers is the one who came up with the name “Zen in Your Den” for Palmer’s mobile massage therapy and airbrush (spray-on) tanning business. “Once I added airbrush tanning to mobile massage therapy two years ago, I needed a name that said more than just ‘licensed massage,’” says Palmer, who has a decade of experience providing deep tissue, relaxation, medical, bamboo, Swedish, prenatal and even seated chair massage therapies since graduating from Tampa’s Suncoast School of Massage. “Zen is about feeling good and both massage therapy and tanning make people feel better.” After providing her massage therapy services at local day spas and a chiropractor’s office for several years, the New Tampa resident decided to branch out on her own five years ago. Armed with a massage table that dwarfs her in size, Natasha takes her time with her clients, puts them at ease with soothing ocean sounds, finds out where their problem areas are and makes sure she

addresses those areas thoroughly. “Mobility equals convenience for my clients,” she says. “I’m not the biggest person in the world, but I’m stronger than I look. No one’s ever told me I wasn’t getting to their problem areas. Plus, I’m a caring person. I always pay attention to my clients’ needs.” Natasha says that massage therapy has a lot of benefits that not everyone knows about. In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, increasing circulation, relaxing and softening injured and/or overused muscles, reducing spasming and cramping and increasing joint flexibility, “massage therapy also can “Have table, will travel” is “Zen In Your stimulate the flow of the lymph Den” Licensed Massage Therapist Natasha Palmer’s motto. system, the body’s natural defense system,” she says. “For Christine Simmons, the owner of Stuexample, in breast cancer patients, masdio F.I.T. The Safest Way To Tan You may or may not have heard that tanning in our Florida sun isn’t exactly the safest thing for you. And, despite claims that tanning beds and lamps are safer than ever before, there’s no doubt that Natasha’s spray-on tan is the safest, fastest, easiest way to get an all-over tan. “An airbrush tanning session with me will give you the same results as five tanning bed sessions or as many hours in the sun,” Natasha says. “It also improves your skin’s overall appearance by de-emphasizing freckles, cellulite, stretch marks, scars, and varicose veins. The event featured outstanding honeygarlic wings, baked ziti, Cuban sandwiches, fresh fruit and a crudité platter supplied by Allen Cann of Garlic Press Catering (335-2130) and great music provided by Gary Carmichael of Heart & Soul Karaoke (561-441-5617), as well as several fantastic local singers (yours truly notwithstanding). The “Social” also was a unique way to see all of the great Mother’s Day (and other) gifts available at (Clockwise from top left): Shinta was the afternoon’s fantastic first singer at the Neighborhood News-sponsored Gingerbread the Gingerbread Cottage, from jewelry to Cottage ‘Spring Social.’ (L. to r.) Austin, Wendy & Matt hosted the event. Chef Allen Cann of Garlic Press Catering provided candles, great University of Florida and outstanding wings and baked ziti. Celebration Of The Arts Was One Hot Weekend In Wesley Chapel! The weather was almost stifling, but the 90-degree temperatures didn’t keep thousands of people from attending the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce’s awesome fourth annual “Celebration of the Arts” at the Shops at Wiregrass mall the weekend of April 9-10. Thousands of dollars in prizes were given away to many of the more than 100 artists who presented pieces for judging in the juried art show and sale, including a couple of prizes for works created by students from Wiregrass Ranch High. The weekend also provided great musical entertainment on a variety of stages, slides and bounce houses for the kids and the mall was again an outstanding locale. Kudos to all! - GN
(Clockwise from top left): The Shops at Wiregrass trains were filled all weekend long during the Greater Wesley Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual “Celebration of the Arts” Apr. 9-10. Many of the award-winning pieces of art were truly unique and impressive. The top prize winner poses with event chair (and new Chamber marketing director) Christine Hope. Hundreds of tents dotted Paseo Dr. in the Shops. The Troy Duncan Band was definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Saddlebrook’s Price Is Right In Our ‘March Madness’ Contest! Like most of the bracket contests for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, the suspense was taken out of our “March Madness” Contest when the University of Connecticut, Butler, Kentucky and Virginia Commonwealth University were the teams that advanced to the Final Four, despite our contest’s unique format. Because we had to go to press with our contest before this year’s field of 68 teams was announced, instead of picking the winners of every game leading up to the national title tilt, we simply asked our contestants to pick the 16 teams they believed would advance the furthest in the tourney. Only two of our nearly 50 March Madness contestants picked U Conn, Kentucky AND Butler among their top-16, so not surprisingly, those two contestants tied for our top honors
(with 300 points each), which sent the contest to our tiebreaker, which was to predict the total points scored by the WINNING team in the title game, which was won by U Conn over Butler, 53-41, in a poorly played finale to an amazing tourney. Therefore, this year’s Neighborhood News March Madness champ is James Price of Saddlebrook, who guessed that the winning team would score 73 points, which gave him the edge over tied contestant Tony Petrisko of Grand Hampton. Therefore, Price wins a $100 gift card to the restaurant of his choice and Petrisko wins $50 in free dining. Also winning prizes worth at least $20 apiece are (in order) Al Wenninger of Arbor Greene, Cathy Thomas and Mike Newbury of Tampa Palms and Wei Zhu of Northwood. — GN
“Fit 4 Life” Continued from page 27 literally couldn’t get out of bed or up out of a chair without significant pain,” says Tony, who not too long ago, played basketball for Florida College in Temple Terrace. “But now, thanks to the spine strengthening MedX machines at Fit 4 Life, not only am I totally pain-free, I’m playing stronger now than I did in college.” And, Tony’s not the only one seeing significant results with Fit 4 Life’s physical therapy services. Travis says he sees a lot of the tennis players and golfers from Saddlebrook, “because our low back program is so unique.” A client named Claus, age 70, raves about Fit 4 Life, too. “I have been coming to Fit for Life for ten years and I feel better now than I did then,” says Claus. “My golf game has improved so much that I am hitting the ball about 30 yards further on my drives. Fit 4 Life also has helped me recover from a life-threatening accident two-and-a-half years ago, where I fell almost two stories.” Travis also has one client, a local doctor we won’t name because he has his own physical therapy department, who still sends his back rehab patients to Fit 4 Life, which recently added
about 1,300 additional feet of space (now totalling about 4,500 sq. ft.) by taking over an adjacent vacant space in the office park. “We added a free weight area, because a lot of our clients have been requesting that we offer free weight training,” Travis says. “But, we simply didn’t have the room for it before.” Even with the free weights, however, all of Fit 4 Life’s certified trainers will still stress proper techniques and slow, to-full-exhaustion training. “And, we’re the only facility in the area with state-of-the-art MedX, Matrix and Iron Grip equipment,” Travis adds. For those who say they don’t have the time to work out, Travis says he can get you great results with just two 30-minute sessions per week, “especially if you follow our on-line ‘clean eating’ nutrition program.” Travis is so sure that he can help you look and feel better that he will give the first 50 people who respond to this article two months of the nutrition program for free! You also can get three weeks of fitness training and nutrition counseling (with no drugs or supplements) for only $149. Fit 4 Life Personal Training & Physical Therapy is located at 17419 Bridge Hill Ct. For more info, call 907-7879 or visit Fit4LifeTampa.com.
