Students, Teachers Honored At Annual WCCC Pride Awards Ceremony By Gary Nager All too often, it seems, we hear people say, “How come there’s not a lot of good news about young people in this or any other publication?” Well, for 14 years now, the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) has been doing its part to make sure that outstanding young people at every school located in the area we call Wesley Chapel receive their just due at the Chamber’s annual “Student Pride Awards Ceremony,” which was held this year on April 30 at the Center for the Arts auditorium at Wesley Chapel High (WCH). Chamber president Jeff Novotny of American Consulting Engineers (ACE) reminded the literally hundreds of students, parents and local business and community leaders in attendance at this year’s breakfast ceremony that, when he moved to the area 14 years ago, “There were only two schools in Wesley Chapel — Thomas E. Weightman Middle School and Quail Hollow Elementary. Today, Wesley Chapel is home to eight elementaries, two middle schools and two high schools and more than 12,000 students, or about 18 percent of all of the public school students in Pasco County. We are proud to honor the top 10 percent or so (more than 100) of those local students at this breakfast this year and every year.”
Novotny said he also is proud of the scholarship funds donated to some of Wesley Chapel’s top college-bound high school seniors at the event, monies that have been donated to the Chamber by local businesses, in(Above) Pasco clerk Dr. Paula cluding ACE. “Last year, we O’Neil emceed the Student were only able to do- Pride Awards Ceremony, nate four $500 where local high school seniors (right) earned cash awards scholarships and four from the Wesley Chapel Cham$250 scholarships,” ber of Commerce (below). Novotny said. “This year, we’ve given out eight $500 scholarships and we hope to double that total again next year.” Pasco County clerk & comptroller Dr. Paula O’Neil served as the event’s emcee this year and Paula said she was proud of not only the students, but also the parents and families of the students and the Chamber member businesses and local resident volunteers (one of each of whom was named a “Pride Partner” for each school) See “Awards” on page 38.

Editorial — Exchange Program Another Reason To Support Rotary An editorial by Gary Nager Although I currently belong to the New Tampa Noon Rotary Club, which meets the same day and time as the Wesley Chapel (WC) Rotary Club, I have been spending more and more time visiting the Wesley Chapel club (which meets Wednesdays at noon at Ciao! Italian Bistro in the Shops at Wiregrass mall). It’s always fun for me to visit the Wesley Chapel Rotary, which continues to grow and currently is at about 60 members, because the local business and community leaders who comprise its impressive membership are just so dynamic...and so much fun. But, while the programs, guests and camaraderie of the WC Club are always firstrate and certainly represent this Wesley Chapel group as living up to Rotary International’s motto of “Service Above Self,” every once in a while, I feel compelled to share my feelings on a particular meeting. The May 1 meeting is such a case in point. Although I wasn’t aware beforehand that there would be anything out of the ordinary about this luncheon, I was thrilled to sit it on a visit from the Group Study Exchange (GSE) group visiting from Rotary District 4890 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This young GSE group, comprised of four men and one woman — three of whom were medical doctors, plus one CPA/MBA and one music therapist (and all between their mid-20s and mid-40s) — captivated the WC Rotary with their presentation about their native land. For those in attendance (like yours truly) with only a high school geography knowledge of this sizable South American country (it’s second in both land area and population to Brazil in

South America and is the 8th largest country in the world by size and 32nd in the world by population), the GSE group told us that Argentina is one of the longest nations in the world, with six distinct geographic regions stretching from near the equator to the north to just miles from Antarctica to the south, and has everything from incredible beaches and huge waterfalls to one of the largest glaciers in the world. I was particularly interested to hear more about the Mendoza area of the Patagonia region, where some of the world’s most incredible wines are grown, including the Malbecs (a French grape varietal brought to Argentina) I’ve grown to love. We also learned about Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of this amazing country, and its people, Argentina’s amazing multiethnic mix (mainly Spanish and Italian, but blending many other European cultures) and of course, its love of “futbol.” But, this visit was about more than just learning about a country. Later that afternoon, I joined the group and about two dozen members of the WC Rotary at Primebar at the Shops, where I shared a wonderful Diseño Malbec (what else?) with the GSE group, as we all listened to (and sang along with) music therapist Federico Damiån Camacho, who played and sang everything from the Beatles to Pink Floyd so beautifully, I was sorry to hear the group was leaving a few days later, after having spoken at more than 20 Rotary clubs throughout Florida. It seems only Rotary can bring such diverse people together for such a wonderful cause. In our next issue, I’ll also tell you about the ten WC Rotary Club members who traveled (for the second year in a row) to the Central American country of Honduras, as the Club’s “International Service” project for 2013. We’ll have pictures and a recap of how the Rotarians spent their time helping the impoverished Hondurans and the special bond that emerged not only between the visitors and their hosts, but also between the WC club members themselves.
At the Wesley Chapel Rotary luncheon on May 1, Club president Greg Lenners (far right) exchanged flags with the Group Study Exchange members from Rotary District 4890 in Argentina.

‘Fields’ Land Donation Deal To Close; WC District Park To Get $2M Expansion By Matt Wiley If everything ends up going according to plan, as of May 7, Pasco County should have become the proud new owner of nearly 140 acres of land inside the Wiregrass Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI), donated by the Porter family, which owns the 5,000-acre DRI in the heart of Wesley Chapel. At a special meeting of the Pasco Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on April 30, the Board voted 50 to approve the deal with the Porters, which would set aside 138 acres of land in Wiregrass for a world-class sports facility. The closing of the deal, which was still being completed before the meeting and given until May 7 (which was after our press time) to be completed, puts an end to a negotiation process that has gone on for more than one year. “To use a cliché from the county administrator (John Gallagher), ‘sometimes it takes time to make a fine wine,’ and I know this has been a long, arduous process that we’ve gone through,” said BOCC chairman Ted Schrader, who was thanking both the Porters (for not only the land, but also for 100,000 cubic yards of fill dirt), and senior assistant county attorney Jane Fagan for her “work in the trenches,” before the unanimous vote. Once the deal is closed, negotiations will get under way with Blue Marble Strategic, LLC, the company with which

the County currently is in talks to build the sports complex. Talks had been at a standstill until the county officially acquired the land from the Porters. Blue Marble, in its initial proposal, stated that it would cost the county only about $8.5 million of Pasco’s tourism funds to construct its design of the park. Pasco officials already had planned to spend no more than $14 million on the proposed complex. Due to the lower cost to the county of building the new park, the BOCC recently voted to allocate up to $2 million in tourism funds to expand the Wesley Chapel District Park, located on Boyette Rd. The expansion will add two Astroturf fields for soccer and lacrosse to the park, which will honor a contract with the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions, an annual lacrosse tournament held in January, to keep the business-driving competition in Pasco. “We reached an agreement with (the Dick’s tournament) to extend the current agreement, but in that agreement, we promised we would have a new facility available (for the tournament) for January 2015,” Comm. Schrader says. “So, to do that, we needed either to solidify something at Wiregrass, or move on the expansion of Wesley Chapel District Park.” Schrader says that Pasco was able to purchase some excess land located next to the District Park for the expansion from the Pasco utility department through an
enterprise fund (which establishes a separate accounting and financial reporting mechanism for government-provided services for which a fee is charged in exchange for goods or services.. “The championship-quality turf fields should allow us to hopefully continue to provide the venue for the Dick’s tournament, as well as to attract other events to that facility,” Comm. Schrader said. “The excess dollars in the tourism development fund (that was being used for the ‘Fields’) allowed us to make this happen. It shouldn’t affect the Wiregrass Thanks to a $2 million tourism fund grant from deal at all. The Wiregrass ‘Fields’ are going to directly complement the fields at Pasco County, there will soon be more lacrosse fields at the Wesley Chapel District Park. the Wesley Chapel District Park.”

WC Couple Arrested For Child Neglect By Matt Wiley A parking lot is no place for an unclothed and unsupervised toddler to be at night. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), around 4 a.m. on April 21, 26-year-old Evan James Ferguson, of 6412 Ryerson Cir. — in the Pasco Woods apartment complex behind The Grove at Wesley Chapel shopping center — and Angela Patrice Walsh, 24, were arrested on multiple charges of child neglect, after their 4-year-old girl was found wandering the apartment complex parking lot around 9:45 p.m. on April 20, wearing nothing but underwear. A neighbor found the child and called PCSO. The report indicates that the child already had been returned to the home once previously that day by a group of neighborhood children, who also found the child roaming the apartment complex unsupervised. The PCSO report says that a deputy responded to the residence and interviewed Ferguson, who said that he did not know the child had unlocked the front door and exited the home because he (Ferguson) was sleeping. When asked if there were any more children in the home, Ferguson showed

the deputy to a bedroom, where a naked 18-month-old boy was laying next to his crib covered in feces. The deputy reported that the apartment was in filthy condition and that there were several beer bottles in Ferguson’s bedroom. The mother, Walsh, was interviewed at her work (the Waffle House in San Antonio, located at 29537 S.R 52). She admitted to the state of the apartment and that the child had left the home while she, too, was sleeping. The Florida Department of Children and Families removed both of the children from the residence and the parents were taken to the Pasco Detention Center. Ferguson was charged with two counts of child neglect and released on a $5,000 bond, while Walsh was charged with two counts of child neglect and released on a $2,000 bond.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Nurse Gets DUI With Kids On Board
According to her children, who were in the vehicle, the music was so loud that their mother, who was driving under the influence, couldn’t even hear a tire go flat. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) says Bethany Lynne White, 31, of Wesley Chapel and a nurse at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), was arrested just after 10 p.m. on April 26 for driving under the influence near S.R. 54 and Shelly Ln. The PCSO report says that White, who was traveling with her two children, ages 9 and 13, had pulled over to the side of the road with a flat tire. A deputy approached to help, but noticed “several signs of impairment,” including glassy eyes, slurred speech and a heavy odor of alcohol from several glasses of vodka and cranberry that she admitted to having consumed earlier that evening. Bethany White White refused to participate in field sobriety tests, the report says, despite the PCSO deputy having read her the implied consent clause that she agreed to when she received her driver’s license.
8
News Briefs The report says that one of her children told a deputy that the music was so loud in the car that the child had to tell his mother that the tire had blown out. The children also said that their mother had been drinking and was scaring them with her driving. White was arrested on one charge of first offense driving under the influence and two charges of child neglect and was released on a $1,300 bond.
Man In Critical Condition Following Crash
One man is dead, and another, from Wesley Chapel, is in critical condition following a two-vehicle accident in northeast Zephyrhills. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), on April 25, Anthony James Roma, 22, of Wesley Chapel, was driving north in northeast Zephyrhills on Old Lakeland Hwy. with 28-year-old Timothy Jason Gordon-Magro, of Zephyrhills, in a 2001 BMW M3 just before 2 p.m. The FHP report says Roma attemped to turn left onto U.S. Hwy. 98 and pulled out in front of a 2000 Dodge truck heading south on Old Lakeland Hwy., driven by Roger Otis Brass, 31, of Dade City. The front of Brass’ truck struck the passenger side of Roma’s BMW. The report says that Gordon-Magro
suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene and that Roma was transported to Lakeland Regional Hospital in critical condition, while Brass was transported to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills listed as in serious condition. FHP reports that seatbelts were worn and an alcohol test on Roma is pending. No further information was available at our press time.
Pedestrian Struck By Two Vehicles, Killed, On S.R. 54 A woman is dead after being struck by two vehicles early on April 18, while standing in the middle of the road in Wesley Chapel. According to the Florida High Patrol (FHP), 21-year-old Lacey Harrelson, of Odessa, was standing in the center lane of S.R. 54, about 200 feet east of Foggy Ridge Pkwy., wearing dark clothing. At the same time, a 2008 Chevy Equinox driven by William Daiek, 57, of Land O’Lakes, and a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by William Nance, 26, of Port Richey, were traveling westbound on S.R. 54. Neither driver saw Harrelson with enough time to avoid a collision due to her dark clothing. Harrelson died at the scene. The incident is under investigation and an alcohol test on the deceased is pending. No other info was available at our press time.

A Summerfield, FL, man has been arrested in Wesley Chapel on charges of child pornography. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Samuel Irvin, 61, of Summerfield, was arrested on April 17 and charged with seven counts of possession of child pornography. Pasco deputies took Irvin into custody at The Grove at Wesley Chapel shopping center while serving a warrant for his arrest from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). He was identified by his driver’s license, the PCSO report says. Published reports state that, on April 11, Samuel Irvin MCSO executed a warrant and took a computer hard drive from Irvin. When it was searched on April 16, more than 90 images were found in emails depicting underage girls engaged in sexual acts. Irvin, described in reports as a wellknown businessman in the Summerfield area, had sent the illegal files from his work email address. A news release from MCSO says that Irvin is being held in the Marion County Jail in Ocala on a $290,000 bond, facing 29 counts of child pornography and transmission of child pornography for the files that were discovered on his computer’s
hard drive.
WCH Student’s Drugs Test Positive For Meth A Wesley Chapel High (WCH) student is learning the hard way that schools are serious when they label their campuses as drug-free zones. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), on April 12, a 16year-old WCH student, whose name has been withheld due the student’s age, was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance on campus. The PCSO report says that the student was searched based on reasonable suspicion from information that the school’s administration had received. A search of the student’s backpack produced five capsules filled with a white powder. The school’s resource officer tested the substance, which the student described as “Molly,” a form of Ecstasy and popular party drug. However, the substance actually tested positive for traces of methamphetamine. PCSO reports that the student was taken into custody and transported to the Pasco Juvenile Assessment Center without incident.
Man Exposes Himself At Wiregrass Spring Fair An exhibitionist has been arrested after exposing himself to several teenage
girls at the Shops at Wiregrass Mall during the opening night of the mall’s annual Spring Fair. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), on April 5, Stephen Racik, Stephen Racik 55, of Jenkintown, PA, pulled up in a pickup truck in front of three teenaged girls who were walking through the parking lot of the Shops at Wiregrass to the Fair, which was being held in the mall’s parking lot adjacent to Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. The report says that Racik stopped his vehicle, arched his back, exposed himself, shook his penis toward the girls and drove away, but was later located in the parking lot. He was arrested by PCSO and charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious behavior, but was released on a $30,000 bond. This arrest comes just weeks after two men, Jarvis Boatwright, 26, of Port Richey, and Marcus Harris, 30, of Holiday, were arrested in Port Richey for numerous incidents of exhibitionism and exposing themselves in public places, including the Gulf View Square Mall, a Pasco County public library and even on a Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) bus. - MW

ACS Relay For Life Of Wiregrass Raises Spirits & $12,000+! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend this year’s American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life of Wesley Chapel on April 12, but I am happy to report about another outstanding Relay event, the ACS Relay for Life of Wiregrass, which was held two weeks after the Wesley Chapel Relay on Apr. 26. Both events again raised thousands of dollars to benefit ACS and brought together a total of nearly 500 Relay-ers on 45 teams. The Wiregrass event, chaired by Rebeca Rodriguez (top photo), raised nearly $12,200, while the more established Wesley Chapel Relay raised nearly $30,000. Rodriguez was proud to welcome the top three finishers from the recent “Relay for Live” singing competition, which was held less at Quail Hollow Country Club than a week before the Wiregrass Relay and which also donated its proceeds to the Relay itself. A crowd of more than 200 people came out to support the singers at Quail Hollow and there were plenty of supporters for the singers on hand at the Wiregrass Relay as well. The Survivor Speaker at the Wiregrass Relay was 13-year-old Shane Salyer (center), who was supposed to appear at the 2012 Wiregrass Relay before suffering a relapse. Shane said he was “so thankful” for his doctors, the 60 rounds of chemo he’s survived and for events like the Relay that help fund the ACS. “I’m really happy to be able to be here this year.” For more pictures from the 2013 Wiregrass Relay, visit WCNeighborhoodNews.com.—GN

Buyers Home Store Helps Home Buyers Make Informed Buying Decisions By Bonnie Mason Buying a home can be an almost-mystical, stress-inducing process, especially for first-time home-buyers like Charlene Caines, who didn’t let this often-difficult experience get her down. Caines turned to Phil Paul, the owner and president of Buyers Home Store, a full-service real estate agency specializing in new homes in the Tampa Bay market, located on SR 54 in Lutz, minutes from Wesley Chapel. Paul was a sales consultant for Buyers Home Store from 2010-12, when he purchased the business from its previous owner. Buyers Home Store real estate agency specializes in helping its clients purchase new homes, especially homes in new construction neighborhoods. Paul says the firm’s eight licensed real estate consultants, including him, have a combined 75 years of new home sales and consulting experience. “Our consultants are Tampa Bay residents who have worked for builders and developers in the area, giving our clients ‘insider’ expertise other real estate agencies can’t offer,” says Paul. Caines says she was greatly appreciative of Paul’s thoroughness and efficiency. “As a first-time buyer, buying a home can be overwhelming and stressful,” she says. “However, Phil provided personalized service, which gave me a sense of calm through what was one of the biggest decisions of my life. His expertise was tremendous — whether it was helping me to set the parame-
12
ters to narrow my search, or always being available to answer any questions I had.”
Rent Or Buy?
Since the recent burst of the housing bubble (both locally and nationally), many potential buyers have gotten into the mindset that renting a home is best at this time. And, while this may still be true in certain areas, a sales consultant from Buyers Home Store can help you determine your best options, especially if you know up front how long you plan to live in one area. According to Zillow Real Estate Research’s “Breakeven Horizon Index,” it takes 8.3 years before buying a home makes more financial sense than renting a home in a major market like San Francisco. In Tampa, however, Paul points out that the number of years is much smaller, at only about 1.6 years. “As the local economy continues to improve, buying a home is becoming a more attractive investment,” Paul says, “and it’s certainly a move to consider if you’re planning to stay in one spot for several years. If you’re paying more than $1,000 each month in rent, you’re probably paying too much. We can get you into a brand new home with a $960-per-month mortgage payment.” Paul adds that many clients don’t realize that purchasing a new home may, in reality, be more economical and more within reach than purchasing an older home. “It may even be less expensive to buy new than a short sale or one in foreclosure,” he says. “This is where the expertise of Buyers Home Store sales consultants can come into play.”
FREE Seminars For Buyers?
Of course, a home buyer’s credit rating has to be high enough to qualify for a mortgage, but Paul says the decision to become a homeowner is becoming an easier one to make. And, his firm can then help you determine the type of home that’s best for you, by empowering you, the consumer, with valuable knowledge about real estate. Paul’s team believes the more you know, the better off you are — and that’s why the firm offers a plethora of valuable resources, including “Home Buying 101” seminars. And, he says, whether you’re a first- time homebuyer or embarking on the home-buying journey for a second or third time, everyone can benefit from attending a “Home Buying 101” seminar, whether you ever become a Buyers Home Store client or not. “Making smart decisions about real estate is good for everyone, and this is our way of helping to do our part as real estate professionals who truly care,” Paul says. First time home-buyers, especially, are encouraged to attend any of the many seminars hosted by Buyers Home Store, where you can learn about credit scores, loan programs, tax benefits, how to prequalify for a loan and more. Phil recognizes that the resale housing market is inundated with distressed properties waiting for new home owners. Short sales and foreclosures also are readily available. Despite all of the deals in the market for previously owned homes, however, he

says consumers shouldn’t discount the potential benefits of buying a new home. Paul and his team work closely with twelve new home builders in the Tampa Bay market, giving them intimate knowledge of what each builder has to offer a Phil Paul of Buyers buyer — everything Home Store on S.R. including price ranges 54 in Lutz wants to and the sizes of the help you find the new homes in each community, as well as the home of your dreams. available layouts and designs, financing, incentives and warranties. And, Phil and his Home Buyers Store consultants help their clients come up with a true assessment of the overall expected expenses of each home they may be interested in buying. He adds that the cost of customizing a new home to a buyer’s expectations, the fact new homes normally require less maintenance and fewer repairs than older ones and the advantage of new home warranties also should be part of a buyer’s decision to purchase new or old. “Green” appliances that provide more energy efficiency also are a consideration. Paul explains that new building codes were set by the International Energy Conservation Code in 2009 and resulted in greater required efficiency for any home — about 17 percent more energy effi-
cient than in 2005. And of course, improved energy use should help decrease the utility costs that he says should be factored into the total cost of owning any home. A Wesley Chapel resident himself, Paul has intimate knowledge of the area. He began his career in real estate after graduating from Florida State University in Tallahassee with a degree in Residential Housing Design & Property Management. He then obtained his Master’s degree in Architecture from Florida A&M University, also in Tallahassee. He moved to Tampa in 2004 and began working for Pulte Homes, where he earned numerous awards and recognitions as a Pulte sales consultant from 2004-10. He sold $15.7 million in real estate properties his first year there and, in 2005, he was named the #1 National Sales Associate for Pulte Homes, which is affiliated with the National Association of Homebuilders. Among the other awards he received while at Pulte include: Employee of the Quarter, Sales Associate of the Quarter (twice), Highest Customer Satisfaction Score among the Sales Team and Sales Associate of the Month (at least one month every year he was with Pulte). Phil also is active in the Tampa Bay community, volunteering with United Way of Tampa Bay, The Children’s Home, and the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa Bay. And, best of all, Paul says, “Buyers Home Store is essentially a free service to home buyers. All of our costs are paid by the seller in any given transaction. So, for home buyers, there’s nothing to lose and every-
thing to gain by working with us.” Located at 24812 S.R. 54 in Lutz, Buyers Home Store is a proud Member of the Tampa Bay Builders Association and the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors®. The firm specializes in connecting buyers with new homes throughout the Tampa Bay area, including Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee counties. If you’re looking to sell, buy, or build a home, call Buyers Home Store at 235-4951. Or, visit BuyersHomeStore. HomesandLand.com to register for the next seminar, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 1. The website also features listings of current new and existing homes for sale in the area.

Habitat For Humanity To Begin Construction On First WC Home With ‘Raise The Roof’ By Matt Wiley With all of the residential communities located within minutes of the Shops at Wiregrass mall, it may seem strange to see a home actually being built at the busy shopping destination. However, the construction of the house is part of a project by Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of East & Central Pasco that, upon completion, will be deconstructed and moved to its permanent location where a family in need will get to call it their home. Beginning on May 17 at mall, a group of volunteers from HFH of East & Central Pasco, part of the non-profit Christian ministry that builds homes for families in need worldwide, will take part in “Raise the Roof,” an event that will begin constructing the walls of what will become the first HFH home built in the Wesley Chapel area. “This Wesley Chapel home will be this HFH chapter’s 120th home to date,” says Stephanie Black, director of development and public relations for Habitat of East & Central Pasco, which has built and rehabilitated homes in Dade City, Zephyrhills, Lacoochee and Land O’ Lakes. Black explains that land prices have been the issue that has kept HFH from building in the Wesley Chapel area, until now. Recently, she says, Pasco County Community Development donated a building lot to HFH in Wesley Chapel. “We hope this home and the occupants will always be examples of what can be accomplished through caring people and the HFH program,” she says. “Habitat doesn’t give away homes; it gives opportunity.” The event challenges local businesses and individuals to help eliminate poverty housing by donating some time, sweat and a few dollars to helping build a quality home for a local family in need. Once the project is completed at the Shops at Wiregrass, the walls will be deconstructed in sections and then transported to the home’s permanent site on Brahma Dr. in Angus Valley, located off Old Pasco Rd., north of S.R. 54, an area from which Habitat hopes to have more land donated for future homes. Once the 1,100-sq.-ft., three-bedroom,
14
two-bathroom home is completed at its permanent site, Daisy Soto and her two young sons, ages six and nine, will move in. Soto, a single mom and Saddlebrook Resort employee, currently is renting a mobile home. Soto, too, will be helping with the construction of the home as part of the deal, in addition to helping with other Habitat projects. “(HFH) helps hard-working families purchase a simple, decent home of their own,” Black explains. “Habitat uses volunteer labor to help keep costs down, and then sells the home with no down payment and a zero-percent-interest mortgage.” The mortgage payments, which the homeowner is responsible for paying over 30 years, go towards building additional homes. So, HFH homeowners pay it forward, literally, helping more families get into a decent home with each payment. The Habitat event already has drawn extensive support from the community in the form of donations and sponsors, especially from Wesley Chapel Toyota & Honda, both of which are located off S.R. 54 next to I-75. “HFH is one of best philanthropic opportunities in the area for us,” says Eric Johnson, director of community relations for Wesley Chapel Toyota & Honda. “We take a very hands-on approach to charity work. HFH is perfect because it allows us to get out there in the community and learn to work together. Instead of only writing a check, donating time to HFH provides a real experience.” Johnson says that he has been working with HFH since Black came in and purchased a vehicle a few years ago. “I was looking for another charity option for the dealerships,” he explains. “I had heard that she had come in, and I had done some HFH work in college. We got to talking and it worked out perfectly.” Johnson says that the dealership’s decision to sponsor “Raise the Roof” was due in part to finding out that it would be the first HFH home in the Wesley Chapel area. “We’ve done so much with HFH that we decided to sponsor the home,” Johnson says. “We’ll be sending employees out frequently to work on it once it gets moved to its final location. However, on Friday of
‘Raise the Roof,’ we’ll have the managers out (at Wiregrass) helping out, and the accountants on Saturday!” Other sponsors of “Raise the Roof” include Florida Medical Clinic’s Foundation of Caring, Batson-Cook Construction, Wells Fargo Bank, Zephyrhills Water, First National Bank of Pasco, SunTrust Bank, Sign-A-Rama of New Tampa, Ierna’s Heating & Cooling and Honey Baked Ham of Wesley Chapel. Since 1994, HFH of East & Central Pasco has been building homes throughout Pasco County. In addition to building the houses, the organization also runs two discount home improvement stores called ReStore, which sell heavily discounted new and gently-used home-build- Volunteers from Wesley Chapel Toyota & Honda, the main sponsor of the ‘Raise the Roof’ project at the Shops at Wireing supplies. Insight Family Eyecare — Premier Family Eye Care On S.R. 56! By Kathleen Schiop Vision is one of only five human senses and for those of us who have it, we can’t imagine life without it. For that reason, we should keep our eyes healthy with regular exams and maintenance. Insight Family Eyecare is here to do just that. With two locations, one in the Trinity area of New Port Richey (called Trinity Family Eyecare), and the other located on S.R. 56 here in Wesley Chapel, Insight Family Eyecare is a full-service optometry practice, specializing in everything from comprehensive eye exams, diagnosing and treating eye diseases to fitting glasses and contact lenses (both hard and soft), with a focus on pediatric eye care. Founded in November 2009 by Dr. Leslie Church, O.D., and her husband and partner, Dr. James Robinson, O.D., Insight Family Eyecare has been serving the Wesley Chapel area for nearly four years at the same location. Insight also has added Dr. Alfred Lappano, O.D., to the staff at both locations and most recently, wellknown local ophthalmologist and pediatric eye specialist Thomas Pusateri, M.D., has begun seeing patients three Wednesdays each month at the Wesley Chapel office. Dr. Robinson and Dr. Church met in optometry school at Nova Southeastern

manager David Kosto. “We have always had what we call a ‘subspecialty’ in pediatric eyecare, so Dr. Pusateri’s pediatric eye expertise allows us to provide even better service for our patients of all ages.” Kosto adds, “Children’s eyes are especially important to keep healthy while they are young and we really have a great set up for kids here. One of our unique features is the large play area for children that they really seem to enjoy. I think that’s one of the things that sets us apart from the rest because very few eye care facilities have this feature for kids.” In fact, one Wesley Chapel resident wrote (in a Yelp.com review), “Amazing!!! I just walked in the door from taking my three year old to his first eye exam. Before we got there I thought this could really go bad fast... but they were AMAZ-
ING! The doctors and the rest of the staff were sooo great with him. The office was really the nicest I have ever been in. They had a great children’s play area and my son felt so at ease he even wanted to take his shoes off, lol! The doctor definitely knew what he was talking about and I am so thankful that I chose this office. Oh, and my son had a blast... Now I know, of all places, that he had fun at the eye doctor?! This is the only eye doctor my family will ever go to again!” In addition to Kosto, who manages both offices, the doctors are joined by their four capable and knowledgeable staff members — Venisha, the lead optician, Jessica, who also is an optician, and technicians Johanna and Gary. “The staff is super friendly and you can tell they like working there,” says pa-
tient Harry D., of Tampa. “They have good knowledge (of the products and services they provide) and walk you through the entire process. I first came in with a nasty little eye infection and they saw me right away and don't think I didn't appreciate it. I left feeling more like an old friend than just another customer.” In addition to the great play area for children, and warm, personalized attention to your eyesight needs, Insight Family Eyecare offers specials for pediatric check ups, package pricing on children’s eyeglass frames and lenses to fit any individual budget, as well as designer frames to suit any fashionista, including Oakley, Michael Kors, Prada, Tory Burch, Nike and Ray-Ban, just to name a few. The office also fits and prescribes all type of hard, soft and multi-focal contact lenses. “And yes, we pretty much accept every vision insurance plan under the sun,” beams Kosto. Bringing eye health to the community is a priority concern for the staff at Insight Family Eyecare, so the offices participate in volunteering eye exam services for elementary school eye screenings at Wesley Chapel Elementary, Denham Oaks Elementary in Lutz and Lake Myrtle Elementary in Land O’ Lakes. Insight also donates frames for local charities and auctions, and sunglasses for raffle prizes at car shows, including the
most recent one to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer foundation on May 4 in Palm Harbor. Insight Family Eyecare, P.A., is located at 27607 S.R. 56, Suite #101, in Wesley Chapel, in the same plaza as Wolf’s Den restaurant. The office is open Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. First Impressions Impress Summer Camps Teach Etiquette, Modeling & TV Skills By Gary Nager When you see WFLA-TV (News Channel 8) news anchor Gayle Guyardo reading the morning news, I’m sure you’ll agree that she always looks glamorous, so it might be hard for you to believe that she was once, “so shy no one who knew me as a little girl can believe I do what I do today.” Well, maybe one person believed Gayle could become a star — her mom and former TV personalty herself Joann Torretta. Joann, the director of First Impressions Tampa, an etiquette, poise, manners, model placement and on-camera training school which is hosting three camps this summer, ironically hosted a fashion & beauty show on the same TV station Gayle’s on now more than 30 years ago. Joann says she knew that unlike Gayle's brother Paul (today a top marketing executive with DirecTV), who was very outgoing and personable as a child who took very well to their mom’s seemingly endless lessons on etiquette, poise and public speaking, Gayle would be much more of a “project.” Even though it may be hard to believe Gayle was ever anything less than beautiful and confident, mother and daughter agree that Joann’s firm hand and unquestionably professional instruction played a major role in making Gayle the polished TV personality she is today. And, although they can’t guarantee your child will go on to become a popular

You Do The Dishes Celebrates 15 Years & Another Summer Of Art! have tried and failed in this area, is the “family feel” of the place. “Coming here to paint is like going to a family reunion every week,” says Herb. “You can’t fake the kind of sincerity and caring about her customers that Cindy’s always had here.” Cindy says one thing that amazes her is when young people now in college and older come back to YDTD to visit — some of whom end up working at the fun studio and coffee, tea and more shop. “One of our employees, Emma, started coming here to paint with her mom when she was 8 years old,” says Cindy.” “Now, she teaches art here and also is an accomplished artist herself.” Emma painted the beautiful portrait that hangs in the studio of Cindy’s long-time pet and YDTD celebrity, Elly Kozlowski, who passed away at 17 years old. Emma even has her own “Mary Emma Sims Pet Portraiture” business (call 774-1587). A part-time employee, Wharton High grad and Sickles High english teacher Jenny Buccino had a recent bridal shower thrown for her by Cindy at the studio.
By Gary Nager When you’ve been doing the same job in the same area for nearly two decades, it can be easy to forget how hard other people also have worked to stay in business in the same area. A case in point is You Do the Dishes (YDTD), the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area’s only Paint Your Own Pottery Studio, located in the same Shoppes of Amberly plaza (off Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms) where our office has been located for more than ten years. Even so, I somehow didn’t remember that owner Cindy Kozlowski has been helping parents in the New Tampa area keep their kids occupied with something other than video games now for 15 years! “This place is like an extension of my house,” says Cindy. “My own children are grown, but I love plants, children and animals and I get to have them all in my ‘house’ here.” Marketing director and art educator Herb Pinder, who has been running YDTD’s Summer Art Workshops (see info below) for nearly a decade, originally came to YDTD as a customer who enjoyed painting the unique variety of pottery items available at YDTD, has been Cindy’s trusted friend and co-worker ever since and he agrees that a big reason for YDTD’s success where so many others

Summer Paint Workshops
Don’t let your kids miss this summer’s fun and educational Summer Art Workshops at You Do the Dishes, hosted by art educator Herb Pinder (far left, standing).
If your child age 7-13 loves art, YDTD has a great summer camp program that has been a huge hit at the studio for the past eight years. The Summer Art Workshops feature expert instruction in a wide variety of artistic media, including color theory, abstract art, pastels, acrylic painting, watercolors, drawing and yes, pottery painting, too. “The workshops do fill up,” says Herb. “Every year, we’ve had to turn away some applicants.” In other words, don’t wait too long before signing up your child(ren). There will be six weekly
workshops again this year and the $220 weekly cost to attend includes expert instruction and all art materials, although the campers are expected to bring their own lunches. “Seeing and hearing people talk about art is one thing,” says Herb. “But, actually getting the hands-on experience, instruction and exposure to the techniques is another thing entirely.” You Do The Dishes is located at 15357 Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms. WCH Automotive Academy Revs Up Students’ Careers By Matt Wiley High school is a time of figuring out what’s next. WCH & WRH Included Among The ‘Most Challenging’ High Schools In The U.S. High school can be tough, especially when preparing for college with advanced classes. And, due to the number of students participating in advanced classes, Wesley Chapel’s two high schools have each earned themselves a spot on the Washington Post’s annual list of “Most Challenging (Traditional) High Schools.” Wesley Chapel (WCH) and Wiregrass Ranch (WRH) High were both among the 10 Pasco County high schools that made the national list, which ranks the best of the more than 22,000 traditional high schools across the U.S. The list is based on a formula that considers how many students graduate, as well as how many Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced International Certificate (AIC) tests are given over the course of a year. The number of tests taken is divided by the number of graduates, which produces a “Challenge Index” score. A score of 1.000 means that for as many students that graduated from a school, the same number of advanced tests were taken. The schools are then ranked by their index score, with the highest being the most challenging school. WRH finished with an index score of 1.751, ranking the school 1,251st in the nation and 232nd in the State of Florida. “It is great to see us on the list," says WRH assistant principal Robyn White. “Each year, we strive to have more students

taking AP courses and, ultimately, the AP exams. Given the size of the school and the ratio they use to name these schools, it is an honor to be listed.” White says that the school currently has 19 AP classes for students to choose from, and that the school is planning on adding another AP class for the 2013-14 school year. “This year, we are giving more exams than ever before,” White explains. “So next year, not only should we make the list, but we hope to move up several spots We will continue to strive to give our students a well-rounded education and provide AP courses in areas of student interest.” Meanwhile, WCH finished with an index of 1.235, ranking the school 1,768th in the nation and 314th in the State. “(Making the list) feels fantastic,” says WCH principal Carin Nettles. “It’s a nice list to be a part of.” Nettles says that, since WCH doesn’t have an IB program, most of the advanced tests taken at her school were AP tests. “We always try to push the kids to push their limits, academically,” she explains. “WCH is always trying to achieve and be the best that it can be. This definitely adds to that. Our goal will definitely be to make the list again next year.” Congrats to our Wesley Chapel-area high schools and their students! Keep up the hard work! — MW

Our Exclusive Look At This Summer Blockbuster Season At The Movies By Matt Wiley It’s sure to be a blockbuster summer with more popcorn, apocalypses, sci-fi, superheroes and action than in recent memory. From family-friendly monsters trying to get a college degree to Superman, escape the summer heat with some summer movies at the Muvico Starlight 20, located on Highwoods Preserve Pkwy. or at the Cobb Grove 16 Theatre & Cinebistro, located in The Grove at Wesley Chapel plaza. The following is a self-proclaimed movie buff’s (trust me, I used to work at Blockbuster) preview of what to check out (or not) on the big screen during the next few months. Like ‘em or hate ‘em, let us know in the comments at WCNeighborhoodnews.com or NTNeighborhoodNews. com, where there are even more previews and trailers to help you decide what to see this summer.
May
“Iron Man 3” – (May 3, PG-13) The world is threatened once again, this time by Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin, and who better for the job of protecting it than Robert Downey, Jr., errr Iron Man? Expect to see the usual suspects reprise their roles in this third installment in the Marvel superhero’s franchise, which is directed by Shane Black, including Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau (who directed the original), as well as newcomer Guy Pearce. “Star Trek: Into Darkness” – (May 17, PG-13) Soon to be Star Wars VII director J.J. Abrams steps back into the director’s chair for the sequel to the 2009 Star Trek franchise reboot (Commence nerd arguments regarding loyalty and conflict of interest). “Into Darkness” finds the universe endangered by an intergalactic terrorist with Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his Enterprise crew in hot pursuit. “The Hangover : Part III” – (May 24, R) The epic conclusion to the drug and booze cruise that is the “Wolf Pack” trilogy, but this time, there’s a new format. Maybe Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis remember everything? Doubtful.
“After Earth” – (May 31, Not Yet Rated) Will Smith and son Jayden try to help director M. Night Shyamalan redeem his post-“Signs” directing reputation on the big screen by crash landing on Earth in a film set 1,000 years after our planet is evacuated.
June
“This Is The End” – (June 12, R) Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson star alongside enough cameos to make heads spin in an apocalyptic survival tale, following a party at Franco’s house. Based on a bogus trailer put out by Rogen and Jay Baruchel (“She’s Out of My League”) about two guys stuck together in a room after the world ends, Rogen & Co. present (what looks like) a hilarious, raunchy and gory tale of the end times. I’m there. “Man of Steel” – (June 14, PG-13) It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a potential new franchise to replace “The Dark Knight,” and many on the inter-Web speculate that it also could be the first of many films leading up to a D.C. Comics “Justice League” movie, similar to Marvel’s “The Avengers” last summer. From director Zach Snyder (“300”) and writers Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer (the latest Batman trilogy) comes a Superman film (the first in seven years), rethought and set in a “more realistic world,” in which men from other planets can fly. Henry Cavill (“Immortals”) stars alongside Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon.
(L. to r.) “Man of Steel,” “Monsters University” and “Elysium” are among this summer’s blockbuster movie releases. “White House Down” – (June 28, Not Yet Rated) The idea already has been played out once this year in “Olympus Has Fallen,” but Ronald Emmerich (“2012”) directs what has been deemed “Die Hard in the White House,” about an off-duty police officer (Tampa Bay’s own Channing Tatum) on a tour of the national landmark with his daughter when it is taken over by armed men. Jamie Foxx (“Django Unchained”) plays the President. Yippee-ki-yay. Make John McClane proud, Mr. Tatum.
July
“Despicable Me 2” – (July 3, PG) Gru (Steve Carrel) and his mischievous little minions return in a follow-up to 2010’s “Despicable Me.” Expect safe family fun from the world’s nicest villain and a bunch of adorable little, yellow guys. Al Pacino, Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig lend their voices. “The Lone Ranger” – (July 3, Not Yet Rated) Disney takes on the classic radio & TV hero of the ‘50s. Johnny Depp trades in his pirate hat for face paint and a feather in the role of Tonto, while Arnie Hammer (“The Social Network”) takes on the lead role as the masked renegade. “R.I.P.D.” – (July 19, PG-13) Policeman Ryan Reynolds (“Green Lantern”) dies and goes to… the R.I.P.D. (Rest In Peace Department), a group of undead cops who try to keep the world safe from undead forces. Partnered with Jeff Bridges, (who still looks to be in character following 2010’s “True Grit”), Reynolds tries to find the man behind his murder in this Robert Schwenke (“R.E.D”) film.
“The Wolverine” – (July 26, Not Yet Rated) Hugh Jack(ed)man is the true man of steel as everyone’s favorite mutant who battles samurais with his blades in modern-day Japan. James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) directs in a sort-of-sequel to 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
August
“Monsters University” – (June 21, Not Yet Rated) It’s been 12 years since we last heard from Monsters, Inc., employees Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike (Billy Crystal), but Disney Pixar brings the two “scarers” back to the big screen this summer to show us how they got their degrees in being scary.
“Elysium” – (August 9, Not Yet Rated) Director Neil Blomkamp returns to the director’s chair in his follow-up outing to 2009’s visually stunning “District 9,” a play on South African Apartheid, with “Elysium.” Matt Damon plays a common man living on earth, while 2154 society’s 1% reside on a space station. Damon decides to bring the rich back to his level. Jodie Foster costars.
“World War Z” – (June 21, Not Yet Rated) Based on the Max Brooks novel of the same name, a virus is turning much of the world into (CGI) hordes of zombies. Thank God we have Brad Pitt, playing a U.N. employee, to stop the virus from spreading. Marc Forster (“Monster’s Ball”) directs Pitt as a man trying to save both his family and humanity. Development issues and script re-writes have plagued this film (see what I did there?) from the start, but hopefully it will be a fine addition to the zombie-survival genre, as the first made on a big-budget scale
“Kickass 2” – (August 16, Not Yet Rated) A sleeper hit in theaters, 2010’s “Kick-Ass” told a different kind of superhero story, in which the young heroes have no actual powers pulled straight from Mark Millar’s comic book of the same name. The action/comedy sequel brings Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) and Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) back to the screen to take on Red Mist’s (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, better known as “McLovin”), with new additions, including Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes

NY NY Pizza — A Famous Taste Of NY & Ybor City In Wesley Chapel! By Gary Nager Anyone who has been reading this publication for any length of time knows how much I love pizza, especially the true New York-style pizza which cooks in real pizza ovens on a true pizza “stone.” The good news, for those of us who live and/or work in Wesley Chapel, is that our area already has had some pretty good NY-style ‘za. The better news is that the new New York New York (NY NY) Pizza, which has been open a couple of months on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., in the same plaza as Dunkin’ Donuts and Edible Arrangements, is among the best in our area...the real thing. Native New Yorker Freddie Mamudi, 35, who currently owns or co-owns four NY NY Pizzerias with a fifth getting ready to open in the Westchase area, has been making true NY pizza since age 12, when he started helping out in a family-owned pizza place in The Bronx, NYC. He moved to Florida after owning his first pizzeria in Connecticut, and opened his first NY NY Pizza on 7th Ave. in Ybor City in 2007, which became an instant favorite with the late night bar crowd. Since then, he has opened an equally successful location on Howard Ave. in the Hyde Park area in 2010, and another on Big Bend Rd. in Riverview the same year. Although he still owns the Ybor location by himself, Freddie hasn’t forgotten his family roots, as he co-owns each of the other locations with one of his cousins. His cousin Leon co-owns Hyde Park, cousin Landi is his partner in Riverview, cousin Tony will help him

We think you can taste the difference.” Clarence, who has been in the pizza biz more than 15 years himself, started at a family-owned restaurant called Il Picera in Garfield, NJ, when he was just 16. Although it became more of a fine-dining establishment during his nine years there, Il Picera started as a true NY-style pizza place, too. As for the pizza itself, if you crave a thin, NY-style crust that crunches, as I do, and the true taste of New York in every bite of sauce, cheese and whatever toppings you prefer (I’m partial to the plain cheese and sausage and pepperoni pies), NY NY Pizza won’t let you down — and Freddie and Clarence promise that the pizza will always be available both by the slice and the whole pie, with a variety of by-the-slice favorites always on hand. Clarence says his favorite pizza at NY NY is the “Grandma’s pizza,” which has three homemade sauces blended together with roasted garlic, fresh basil and olive oil and the sauce on it is unique...and totally delicious. But, you really can’t go wrong with any of the pizza options, from the traditional Margherita
to the Bada Bing sausage (with tomatoes and broccoli), or the NY NY Supreme with pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, olives, bacon, mushrooms, onions, peppers and ham. But, NY NY At the new New York New York Pizza on BBD Blvd., next to Dunkin’ also features a full Donuts, you’ll find (top left) a variety of true NY-style pizzas available by menu, with not just the slice, (top right) co-owners Clarence (left) and Freddie hand-forming eggplant or chicken the pizza crusts and (above left) great, al denté pasta dishes like ziti with parmigiana, but also broccoli sauce and grilled chicken. eggplant rollatini strombolis and a variety of hot and cold subs, (rolled and stuffed with ham and ricotta), burgers, wraps and even authentic gyro and chicken or eggplant Florentine (with spinach, Philly chicken sandwiches. fresh mozzarella and a lemon sauce, penné a In other words, you really can’t go la vodka and of course, baked pastas like wrong at NY NY Pizza, especially if you lasagna, baked ziti and stuffed shells. check out the amazing specials available in The garlic knots also are perfect and the ad on page 31. The Latest & Greatest News About Dining, Shopping, Retail & More In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel! WingHouse Set To Open By The End Of May
One of the recent items in this space that generated a lot of interest was the announcement of the planned opening of the new Ker’s WingHouse in the former Buffalo’s SW Café building on S.R. 54, just east of the entrance to Lexington Oaks. To that end, assistant editor Matt Wiley was on hand when Wesley Chapel WingHouse general manager Eric Ratcliff appeared at the April 25 meeting of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC)’s Economic Development Committee at American Consulting Engineers. Ratcliff told the committee members that the new WingHouse is now accepting applications to fill 120 new jobs, not all of which will be scantily-clad women. Ratcliff also noted that the new eatery is planning to open with a WCCC Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 30. We’ll keep you posted with any updates on WCNeighborhoodNews.com.
Lots Of Chamber Ribbon Cuttings
The months of April and May are among the busiest for local schools, but students, educators and PTA members aren’t alone. This also is one of the busiest Ribbon Cutting seasons each year, and the WCCC certainly is keeping things so busy, we haven’t been able to get to every such event...but we keep trying. Since our last issue came out, the WCCC has cut ribbons at the spectacular new Parks Fiat (28736 S.R. 54, 9077800), on Apr. 19, the new Chase Bank branch (at 1747 Bruce B.
