Road Crews Will Be Busy Around Our Area This Summer By Michael Smith While the extension of S.R. 56 eastward from the Shops at Wiregrass mall continues to be mired in ongoing debate over who should pay for the relocation of utilities, Pasco County officials are moving forward with other planned area road projects, including the widening of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. (BBD, aka C.R. 581) and the widening of S.R./C.R. 54. Work also is under way on the reconstruction of the bridge over S.R. 54 at I-75 in preparation for the future widening of the interstate and the roadway underneath the bridge. Pasco County commissioner Pat Mulieri says that she and other county officials met late last month with representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT),. the Tampa Electric Co. (TECO), and the develop-

ers of Seven Oaks, Meadow Pointe and Wiregrass Ranch to discuss the issues that are holding up the S.R. 56 project, namely, who is responsible for paying the estimated $100,000 or so that it will cost to relocate utilities around the intersection of S.R. 56 and BBD. The utilities belong to TECO, but company officials say that the intersection work is a private project, since it is being paid for by the developers, which would mean that the developers should have to pay for the utility work. County and FDOT officials, however, are of the mind that it is a public project, which would mean that TECO would have to pay to relocate the utilities. Unfortunately, the impasse was not resolved at the May meeting, but Mulieri says there was some progress made, and the two groups are scheduled to meet again on June 15.

Remembering My Friend Ina Saiger (1929-2009) I’m pretty sure most of you don’t know who Ina Saiger (née Cohen) was, even though she lived in Tampa Palms the last couple of years of her life. Truth is, I never really knew her, either, although I believe I actually met Ina years before I ever met her daughter Suzi, who became my good friend and stand-up comedy writing partner a little less than a year ago. Just so you understand the type of woman you’re dealing with here: Ina, who passed away May 26 at the age of 80 from complications from a stroke following surgery on her lungs, decided at age 71 that, after years of playing competitive tennis herself, she would become a tennis teaching pro. She was the pro at the world-renowned Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada from 1998-2007

An editorial by Gary Nager (she also taught a little at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club), and I’m almost positive she gave my boys lessons somewhere around 2000 or 2001, when we used to stay at the Cheeca year after year. Nearly a decade later, when she and I became friends through her daughter, Ina already had suffered some health setbacks and probably only weighed around 90 lbs. soaking wet. But, she and her sweet standard poodle Jane would sit with Suzi and me on the back porch of Ina’s house 1-2 days each week as we all worked together to refine Suzi’s stand-up material. Ina, for years a heavy smoker, always came up with more of Suzi’s top one-liners than I ever did, but somehow, she decided that one day, she and I were destined to do a little comedy

act of our own together. She said the only way the act would work was if I played straight man Ed MacMahon to her wise-cracking Johnny Carson. So, even though I didn’t know her long, Ina’s grace, wit and sincere spirit will always be with me. Her and Suzi’s relationship was not only beautiful, it was unique. They fed off each other’s senses of humor like few mothers and daughters I have ever met. But, even though she’ll no longer be helping Suzi polish her act, the gift of gab — and laughter — she gave her daughter will surely live forever.

Don’t Let Yourself Become A Victim Of Auto Burglary By Michael Smith Local law enforcement officials say that it could and should be one of the most easily preventable crimes, and yet, every year, dozens of vehicles in our area are “broken into,” mostly because drivers continue to leave their vehicles unlocked, which authorities say is like an invitation to any would-be burglars. “Criminals are opportunists,” says Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) spokesman Kevin Doll. “People only make it easier for them by leaving their cars unlocked or with valuables inside in plain sight.” Fortunately, Doll says, aside from a rash of cases earlier this year in the Lexington Oaks subdivision, auto burglary hasn’t been much of a problem in the Wesley Chapel area so far in 2009. That’s different from last year, when the area was targeted by an organized group of criminals from outside the county. Doll says PCSO cracked the ring with a special task force of detectives and deputies, and that task force will be reactivated this summer, when the number of vehicle burglaries typically increases. “We just want to head off any problems before they arise,” Doll says. Meanwhile, south of the Pasco/

Hillsborough county line, officers with the Tampa Police Department (TPD) have been battling a wave of break-ins since the beginning of the year, including 15 burglaries that took place in one night May. According to TPD Patrol Sgt. J.F. Preyer, those recent break-ins took place in Cory Lake Isles, where eight residents were victimized, and Arbor Greene, where another seven vehicles were broken into. As has been the case in the past, the thieves’ usual targets are small, easyto-carry electronics, such as I-Pods and GPS devices, that are often left right in plain view within the vehicles. “It’s become an epidemic,” says Preyer, who adds that the number of auto burglaries has been steadily rising since the beginning of the year. And, as usual, the typical offenders are teens who are out looking for a few kicks, a few easy bucks and sometimes, bragging rights at school. “This year, the kids have a new term for it, ‘carhopping,’ which we’ve never heard anywhere else but in New Tampa,” says TPD Det. Heather Bishop, the lead investigator on the auto burglary cases. Both Bishop and Preyer are quick to point out, however, that despite what

many people think, the offenders aren’t always “bad” kids from other parts of town, either. “These are not kids from ‘over there,’” Preyer says. “We’ve seen supposedly good kids who make good grades and (in at least one case) are going to go to Ivy League schools.” He cites the case of four teens who were arrested earlier this year after breaking into more than a dozen vehicles in several neighborhoods around the New Tampa area. The four were all students at Freedom High in Tampa Palms, had no prior records and were driving one of the teens’ mother’s vehicle while committing the crimes. “We thought (the wave of thefts) might slow down when we caught those four, but that hasn’t been the case,” Preyer says. The problem has gotten so bad recently that TPD actually resorted to using its reverse 911 system to call local residents to warn them about the thefts and remind them to lock up their vehicles after the break-ins in Cory Lake Isles and Arbor Greene. Officials with both departments also say that Neighborhood Watch groups are effective in the fight against burglaries, and can offer assistance for those who want to start up a group in their community.

One problem, the officers say, is that many area residents feel that they are safe from crime because they live in gated communities. That is a false assumption, as proven by the break-ins in Cory Lake Isles and Arbor Greene, both of which are gated (and guarded) communities. So, what can you do to avoid becoming a victim? Both Doll and Bishop have the same advice: make sure your car’s doors are locked and the windows are closed at all times. Better yet, park inside your garage if possible. Also, keep valuables out of sight by locking them up in the trunk or bringing them inside your home. W ESLEY C HAPEL School Board To Purchase Meadow Pointe School Site

Earlier this month, the members of the Pasco County School Board approved a contract for the purchase of a 73-acre parcel of land within the Meadow Pointe subdivision for a future middle school. Pasco County School District assistant superintendent Ray Gadd says that the parcel, located off Meadow Pointe Blvd., was a good buy at $1.4 million, even though the School District doesn’t plan to build the new school for at least 8 or 9 years. “That’s what we’re planning, to the extent we can predict what will happen the next few years,” Gadd says. The School District has been in the midst of a building boom, especially in the Wesley Chapel area, where no less than half a dozen new schools have been built over the past several years, including Wiregrass Ranch High, Dr. John Long Middle, Veterans Elementary and others. Gadd says that during the height of the area’s explosive growth prior to the real estate market collapse, the District was seeing as much as 40 percent of its overall growth from the Wesley Chapel area. That has changed, for the time being, but everyone expects the area to continue to grow once the economy turns around, he says. On the other hand, the depressed economy has resulted in a drastic reduction in prices for land in the area. The new property, at roughly $21,000 per acre, is a good bargain, compared to the $50,000 per acre that the School Board paid for the land in the Wiregrass Ranch development. After the School District conducts due diligence on the property, the contract will have to be approved by the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners. And, once the middle school is built, Gadd says that there is

News Briefs enough room on the property to accommodate a new elementary school as well, if the District needs to build another one in the area.

Tampa Firefighter Arrested After Multiple Crashes

A veteran firefighter with Tampa Fire Rescue was arrested April 26, after authorities say he was involved in five separate accidents within the space of less than 10 minutes. According to reports, 50-year-old Mitchell Lee Smith, a 19-year veteran of the department, crashed into three mailboxes, a metal cable TV box and another vehicle that was parked on the Mitchell Lee street in the Pebble Smith Creek neighborhood where he lives. The reports say that all of the accidents occurred between 8:07 p.m. and 8:13 p.m., and that the total damage was estimated at around $800. Smith was arrested at his home about two hours after the accidents, and was charged with four counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. He was released from jail after posting a bond of $1,250.

Alexander Fernandez of Tampa, was hit in the face by someone inside the bar. Fernandez went outside to get a baseball bat from his vehicle, and when he came back to the front of the bar, another man tackled him from behind, and a third person began kicking him while he was on the ground. Then, someone took the bat from his hand and struck Fernandez in the head with it, and as he lay on the ground in a daze, two other individuals rifled through his pockets and took his wallet. The entire incident was captured on videotape, and several days after the attack, the person who took the video returned to the bar and distributed copies of the video, which also was posted on the YouTube website. HCSO investigators were able to identify the person who made the video, and when they went to his home with a search warrant, he was arrested, along with four other individuals who

were at the residence at the time. William T. Bogan, 25, of Thonotosassa, who police say was the operator of the video camera, was charged with one count of solicitation to commit strong-arm robbery for urging the other individuals to beat and rob Fernandez. Also charged were two other individuals who appeared on the video, Owen Reid, 22, and Perry Q. Paremore, also of Thonotosassa, who were both charged with one count each of possession of marijuana, as well as William Bogan’s brother Whitney, 23, and Fedell Jackson of Tampa, 24, who also were charged with marijuana possession. Fernandez was treated and released from a local hospital, and police are still looking for the two individuals who robbed him. Videotaped Beating, Robbery Results In Arrests

Five men were arrested after police say they videotaped a beating and robbery that took place outside of a local nightclub last month and posted the video on the internet. According to a release issued by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), the incident took place just after 1:30 a.m. on May 28 at the Lutz Area Hang Out on N. Florida Ave. The report says that the victim, 21-year-old

Plans For Tennis Center, Sports Complex Fall Through By Michael Smith Wesley Chapel residents will miss out on having a pair of great recreational facilities right in their backyards, now that plans for those facilities have either fallen through or gone elsewhere, but New Tampa residents are celebrating a decision by county officials that will pave the way for both the area’s first-ever community theater and a new ice skating/hockey facility and aquatic center. We learned late last month that the planned Pasco National Tennis Center will not be built, since negotiations broke down between county officials and Saddlebrook Resort owner Tom Dempsey, who was set to build and operate the tennis center on a 24-acre site within the Wiregrass Ranch development (adjacent to Saddlebrook). Neither side would comment on the breakdown in talks, except to say that they could not come to an agreement on the details of the proposed arrangement. County commissioner Pat Mulieri says, however, that the site, which was donated to the county by the Porter family, will be retained for some public use. Also, it was announced in May that

a $31 million-plus sports and entertainment complex being considered for a site in Wesley Chapel will be built in the Trinity area of New Port Richey instead. Although the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners has yet to enter into an agreement with the developers of the proposed complex, which would include ballfields and other facilities, it now appears as though it will be built on a site within the Starkey Ranch development. Meanwhile, on May 6, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners agreed to set aside 13 acres of land (see map) in the heart of New Tampa for the community theater and an ice rink/sports complex, which actually are two separate projects that have both been in the planning stages for several years. The 13 acres is part of the 81-acre parcel formerly owned by St. Joseph’s Hospital. The county purchased the land from the healthcare group in 2004 to use for stormwater retention ponds that are needed for the widening of BBD. However, there is more land than is needed for the ponds, so the remaining usable acreage, about 36 acres, was set aside for the theater and sports com-

plex, with some land left over for use as a passive park. The theater is the long-time dream of Doug Wall, president of the New Tampa Players community theatre group, which has been looking for a home of its own since the troupe was founded back in 2001. An earlier effort to acquire land for a theater died on the vine after running into opposition from local officials. “For seven years, we’ve been trying to get land from the city or the county to build a theater,” Wall says. Wall says the plan calls for a theater with about 250 seats to be built first, with additional facilities, such as dressing rooms, rehearsal spaces and administrative offices, to be added over time. “Our goal is to build a state-of-theart performing arts center for community theater, with everything that is necessary to put on full scale productions,” Wall says. Wall says that his group is in the process of going over all the numbers, but the current estimate is that the theater will cost between $4 million-$5 million, while the other facilities will cost an additional $1 million-$2 million. Jim Mennie, the president of Tampa Bay Sportsplex, Inc., says he has

only been waiting for a “dirt commitment” in order to move forward with his company’s plan, which includes an 85,000-sq.-ft. facility with a pair of ice rinks and seating for around 300 spectators, for both hockey and recreational ice skating, as well as a full-fledged aqua center with an Olympic-size pool and diving facility. In addition, Mennie says the complex also will include a full-service restaurant, food court, pro shop, fitness center and public meeting rooms. “We are creating a true New Tampa town center,” Mennie says. Mennie also is crunching the numbers for his project, and estimates that the complex will cost between $6 million-$8 million. He is hoping to hold a Grand Opening on July 4, 2011.

Crown Community Development, the developer of Seven Oaks, is responsible for paying for the $12 million project, which will expand the roadway from two lanes to six. It mirrors work being done south of the county line, where Hillsborough County has also begun widening the boulevard. It is not clear when the Pasco portion of the widening project will be completed, since it will have to incorporate the intersection at BBD and S.R. 56. Things also are moving ahead, albeit slowly, for the widening of S.R. 54 between I-75 and Curley Rd. Pasco County is still negotiating with property owners along the planned route, which will accommodate the widening of the roadway from two undivided lanes to six lanes divided by a landscaped median. In April, the county paid about $1.7 million to purchase three of the needed parcels, and county officials say they now own about three-quarters of the land needed for the project. All together, the

county had to purchase more than 100 separate parcels of land along the 3.2mile segment, and the final tab for all that property is expected to exceed $30 million. The county’s current schedule is to let the S.R. 54 project out for bid this summer, select a contractor by the fall, and begin construction at about the same time that S.R. 56 opens to Mansfield Blvd., so that commuters can use it as an alternative to bypass the construction on S.R. 54. Finally, further west on S.R. 54, crews are hard at work taking down the existing overpass at I-75, which will be replaced with a set of new single-span bridges to accommodate both the widening of S.R. 54 under the overpass and the widening of the interstate itself from four lanes to six. Work began on the $33 million project in February, and construction is expected to be completed by February 2010. There are some nighttime road closures that are made necessary by the work, but they are limited to the hours of 8 p.m.-5 a.m. on the interstate and 10 p.m.-5 a.m. on S.R. 54. Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Earns Cardiac Accreditation By Gary Nager Although there is still no update to report about its parent company (Adventist Health System)’s plans to build the first-ever hospital to be physically located in Wesley Chapel (in the Wiregrass Ranch development), Florida Hospital Zephyrhills (FHZ) was recently proud to announce that its Heart Institute has earned a prestigious national accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). At a news conference held May 27 at the hospital, FHZ president and CEO John Harding; Heart Institute administrative director Gwen Alonso, R.N., M.S.N, C.C.R.N.; and Emergency Department director Kim McDermott, R.N., M.S.N.; told a small gathering of reporters that the SCPC accreditation was the culmination of a two-year journey and an important collaboration between the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and the hospital’s separate Emergency and Cardiology departments. “We’ve been doing 150 open heart surgeries per year and calling our Heart Institute a Chest Pain Center without being accredited since 2006,” Harding said. “But, for the last nine

months, the SCPC has looked closely at every aspect of that care, so we are very proud to have earned the SCPC’s seal of approval.” Harding and Alonso said that the goal of any cardiac care department is to save lives and, as Harding put it, “Time is tissue when you’re talking about a heart attack. If the hospital isn’t able to get your heart ballooned within 90 minutes of the heart attack, precious heart tissue will be destroyed.” In order to be accredited by SCPC, FHZ had to improve its front door-to-triage (when the nurse decides whether or not you’re actually having a heart attack or some other type of incident and front door-to-doctor times. “We are proud that 85 percent of our patients are now door-to-triage in 5 minutes and 92 percent go from front door to seeing a doctor in 30 minutes,” said Alonso. “Our goal is to keep reducing those times, but we are certainly proud of our record so far.” McDermott also noted that simple things, such as improved outdoor signage, also have contributed to the improved response times at FHZ. Considering that heart disease is still the number one killer in this country, those response times become even

more important when the person suffering with the cardiac incident is you or a member of your family. “Before, our emergency and cardiology departments and EMS were three separate entities,” said McDermott. “Today, we all work together as one cohesive unit and that definitely helps save lives.” FHZ and University Community Hospital on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. at Fletcher Ave. each are closer to a portion of Wesley Chapel’s still-growing population, but Harding says both are outstanding, SCPC-accredited Cardiac Care facilities that provide quality care for people in this area. PCSO To Host Safe Driving Course For Local Students

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) is teaming up with the Florida Sheriff’s Association to teach teens better driving skills this summer. According to PCSO spokesman Kevin Doll, the Florida Sheriff’s Teen Driver Challenge provides students the knowledge and hands-on experience to reduce their chances of being involved in a crash. The course, which is being offered at high schools across the county, is open to all high school students, but attendance is limited to about 25 students per site, so those who wish to participate are urged to sign up as soon as possible, Doll says. The two-day course consists of two sections, one in the classroom and the second behind the wheel. The four-hour classroom portion includes topics such as: Teen Crash Facts, Knowing Your Vehicle, Using Your Senses, Vehicle Dynamics, Safe Driving Habits and more. On the second day, students will participate in an eight-hour driving class, using their own personal vehicles, that will cover exercises such as Emergency Braking, Backing, Cornering, Offroad Recov-

WCH’s Joyer Is State Champ

At the Class 3A track and field state finals, senior Wesley Chapel High (WCH)’s Kamran Joyer took home an individual State championship in the boys shot put. After a first place finish in the shot put and discus at the Region 3A-2 finals, Joyer finished his high school shot put career with his Statetitle-winning personal best of 59 feet, 7.5 inches — almost seven feet farther than the runner-up. Joyer, a graduating senior who will be playing football at the University of South Florida this fall, placed seventh in the discus. The other Wildcats to place at the State finals (by placing in the top four at Regionals) were Kamran’s brother Kyle Joyer (10th in boys shot put), the girls 4x400-meter relay team of Kandice Watson, Renee Vaughns, Dana Cannon and Shaniqua Hill, which finished ninth and the girls 4x800m relay team of Watson, Vaughns, Cannon and Jessica Furst, who also finished 14th in the girls 1,600m run. The WCH girls had won their ninth straight District title this year and the boys team finished second. Jazzmyn Love-Roberts (long jump) and Shantel Houston (100 hurdles, triple jump)

took individual titles for the girls while Kamran Joyer (shot put, discus), Earon Hicks (triple jump, long jump) and Mitchell Wozniak (300 hurdles, 110 hurdles) won titles for the boys.

Baseball Surprises At Districts

After going 7-15 in the regular season, the WCH baseball team was the number four seed out of five teams heading into the Class 5A, District 7 baseball tournament. However, that didn’t stop them from beating Ridgewood 2-1 in the quarterfinals, top-seeded Land O’ Lakes 4-1 in the semifinals and Brooksville Central 7-0 in the finals to claim the school’s first district baseball title. The Wildcats finished the season with a record of 10-16 after losing a close 2-0 game to Brandon in the regional quarterfinals. Making this district title run even more remarkable is the fact that the Wildcats had only one player—senior pitcher Christian Illing— crack the All-Sunshine Athletic Conference’s Honorable Mention list.

Bulls Baseball Done Quickly

Although he has since resigned his post to take the same position at New Tampa’s Freedom High next season, Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) head baseball coach A.J. Leppla’s season ended a little sooner than he hoped.

Leppla, a former pitcher at Eckerd College who served as Freedom’s pitching coach prior to joining the coaching staff at Wiregrass, led the Bulls to their best baseball season ever (14-13), but won only one game at the District 4A-8 tournament before bowing to Pasco High. WRH was led by the battery of senior pitcher Abel Cubero and junior catcher Spencer Bowles. On the tennis court, junior Sydney Simpson became the first Bull ever to qualify for the State tournament after winning the Class 2A-6 championship at No. 1 singles. Both Simpson and sophomore Hannah Still, the District champion at No. 2 singles, were named First Team All-North Suncoast by the St. Petersburg Times. After a first round Regional match win against Citrus, the girls tennis team fell to Nature Coast in the second round. Senior James Mudge won the same honor for boys tennis after finishing as District runner-up at No. 1 singles. Boys coach Dave Wilson was named All-North Suncoast Coach of the Year after leading the Bulls to a 132 record and the first District postseason match win in the program’s history — a first round Regional win against Citrus. Paul Proscia’s All-NEW Polo’s Italian Grill—Better Than Baci! By Gary Nager Photos by Sandra Nelson Long-time New Tampa residents can’t help but remember the old Baci Italian Grill in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center shopping plaza in front of West Meadows. It was our area’s very-much-welcome first Italian restaurant that wasn’t also a pizzeria and owner Keith Williamson’s California-inspired Italian cuisine was an instant favorite. But, Keith eventually sold Baci and the place, to be honest, hasn’t been the same since, although it’s always been at least O.K. The most recent owners, Bob and Maureen Polo, made just a few minor changes to the old Baci menu, but also changed the restaurant’s name to Polo’s Italian Grill. Considering that the place is small, doesn’t have a bar (although it does have wine and beer; more on that below) and can’t be seen from Bruce B. Downs Blvd., it pretty much HAS to have great food to really capture the attention of the locals. Well, the new Polo’s is, in my humble opinion, the BEST restaurant that has occupied this location. And, although a name change could (and really should) be coming, the new Polo’s is a labor of true love for new owner and chef Paul Proscia, a fellow New York native with many years of experience creating cuisine for other restaurants owners. Let Matt Clark Photography Capture Your Special Moments, Too! By Melissa O’Brien There are special moments in life that, if captured through photography, can become timeless keepsakes. An adoring glance at a wedding, a look of pure joy from a playful child – these are the moments a professional, experienced photographer can capture that most amateurs cannot, at least not as consistently. Photographers, after all, are artists who have the ability to turn once-in-a-lifetime experiences into something that can last forever. Matt Clark, owner of Matt Clark Photography, has more than 20 years of experience capturing those special moments. From weddings and graduations to portraits and commercial photography, Clark’s passion for his profession has helped create lasting personal memories and memorable advertisements for many clients and businesses. “I cover events like a photojournalist would,” says Clark. “I look for opportunities to take high-quality candid photos. I really try to find moments that will capture a memory for a long time. I look for things that other people do not see.” Clark began his career in photography working in real estate offices photographing houses. From there, he

entered the advertising world as a graphic designer, and worked for the three largest advertising agencies in the Tampa Bay area as an art director over a 20-year span of time. A couple of years ago, however, he decided to break out on his own. “I wanted to work for myself,” says Clark, who lived most of his life in the Lakeland area before moving to Tampa eight years ago. “You get to a point where you have all the tools and know-how to start your own business.” He operates Matt Clark Photography out of his home in the Northwood subdivision in Wesley Chapel. He offers both professional and commercial photography and also incorporated an advertising design shop that he calls AdGumbo. Clark has done commercial photography for clients like Publix Supermarkets, Marriott Hotels, Circle K and the Home Shopping Network. “These companies have very high standards and expect high-quality work,” says Clark. “And, this highquality expectation overflows into everything I do. What makes me stand apart from other photographers is my technical and post-production skills. Being an art director for so many years, I have both a professional and a creative eye. I use retouching and other techni-

cal aspects like color correcting to create the perfect photograph.” What also makes Matt Clark Photography stand out is Clark’s ability to capture a special moment. “At special events, what I am being commissioned for is to capture the memories that will last a lifetime,” he says. “A time when a family is all together doesn’t happen very often and it is important to capture the rarity of the moment. People look at their wedding photos for their entire lives and it is great for them to see the multiple generations of their families having a wonderful time.” When asked about changes and trends in photography over the years, Clark admits that today’s digital photography is better than when he worked with film. “There is no waste anymore with digital cameras. It fits into the ‘green’ trend. You don’t have to develop things before you see them and use those chemicals in the process. And, as for presentations, people are now purchasing leather-styled ‘books’ with wedding photos rather than traditional photo albums.” For Hope and Brian LaFrazia, hiring a qualified wedding photographer was very important. “We got married on November 6, 2008, at Sunken Gardens,” says Brian. “I’m a graphic artist and knew Matt through working with him. I was very confident that he’d be in the right place in the right time.” LaFrazia, who lives in Tampa Palms, says Matt was setting up at the wedding hours ahead of time. “We knew our wedding would be a challenge to photograph because we held it at night,” he says. “It was an outdoor ceremony in the oak garden reception area at Sunken Gardens and Matt was able to capture all the detail we wanted outside. He was prepared and came

with very powerful flashes. He captured special moments like us walking down the aisle after the ceremony with our guests blowing bubbles (photo, above). It looks like a staged shot, it was so good, but it was very spontaneous. During our reception, one of my favorite shots is when Hope and I were dancing. My eyes are closed and I was really enjoying the moment. I had no idea that Matt was there taking the picture. He was very inconspicuous and in the right position all the time.” Ari Rothman, the Florida Manager of Brand Marketing for Circle K convenience stores, has worked with Clark on a number of occasions. “Matt is an artist and a photographer,” says Rothman. “He has a great creative mind and can pick up on things that other people don’t see. He has worked with me on projects for point-of-purchase advertising, corporate conferences and design logos. I can give him ideas of what I want and he runs with it. He works hard and is easy to work with – always meeting his deadlines. Thirsty? Don’t Make A Beer Run, Call Beer Runners By Michael Smith How many times has this happened to you: you’re in the middle of hosting a great party or at home watching an exciting sporting event, and you get up for another cold one only to discover that you’ve run out of refreshments. In the past, the only two options were to do without or to nominate someone to make a “beer run.” Now, however, there’s a new business in town that will save you the trouble (and possibility a ticket for DUI, if you and your guests have already enjoyed a few rounds). It’s called, appropriately enough, Beer Runners, and, for a reasonable fee, they will bring beer and other “adult beverages,” as well as sodas, snacks, smokes, or just about anything else you might need, right to your door. Beer Runners, located at on S.R. 54 in the Freedom II plaza (between Saddlebrook Resort and Curley Rd.), is the brainchild of three area couples, James and Rhoda Matrisciano, Kim and Jon Fox, and Wilson and Polly Palacios. James says that his wife originally thought of the idea a while ago, but it never came to fruition until last

year, when the three couples were at a Halloween party and the supplies ran out. James, who doesn’t drink, was the one who was picked as the designated driver, and he says he remembers somebody saying, “I wish there was a service for this.” The rest, as they say, is history. The store opened on January 1, and although the business is still not providing enough income to allow any of the partners to quit their day jobs, Matrisciano says that word of mouth is growing. Weekends are the busiest, of course, but they’ve also gained a few customers who receive orders on a regular basis. They’ve also gotten a few unexpected calls, such as the order for 66 beers to be delivered to Spring Hill, when someone wanted to console a friend over losing a business deal. Beer Runners delivers everything from six-packs to kegs, including all Budweiser and Miller products, as well as a good selection of imports and microbrewery beers. Many are on hand at the store (you can also stop by and pick them up, if you’re in the area), while special orders are placed each Monday night and are usually available for pick-up or delivery by Tuesday, although some of the microbrews and

A basic list of products is available on the business’ website, usbeer runners.com, but if you’re looking for something that’s not listed, Matrisciano says, just call and ask for it. If nothing else, he says, the driver will stop at the store on the way over and pick it up for you. He adds that Beer Runners’ prices are certainly better than those at convenience stores, and comparable to, and even better than supermarket prices, in some cases. On top of the cost of the products, delivery within a three-mile radius of the store costs $5,

and an additional 65 cents per mile beyond that. To ensure that those placing orders are old enough to drink, Beer Runners only accepts credit cards for sales, which are processed before each delivery is made. And, if the person accepting the delivery doesn’t have ID matching the credit card, the delivery driver walks away, and Beer Runners will not refund the purchase. Matrisciano says the drivers also have the discretion to refuse a delivery if they feel the customer has had too many already. Matrisciano says that the Wesley Chapel location is the “concept location” for a business that the partners hope to one day franchise nationally. For now, the entire staff consists of the six partners, but they are accepting applications for delivery drivers. Check Out The New Cerise Bistro

Although its menu describes the food at the new Cerise Bistro in the Cross Creek Center plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. (at Kinnan St.) as “Japanese Style French Cuisine,” the bottom line is that Cerise (which means “cherry” in French), which has replaced Mazzola’s Little Italy in the plaza, is an elegant, casual fine dining restaurant with outstanding food. Although a larger review is coming in a future issue, everything I’ve sampled so far at Cerise, which is open for both lunch and dinner, has been outstanding, and the prices are very fair for the quality and quantity of food. Among my favorite dishes to date are the roast duck with Dijon mustard and port wine sauce (dinner only), the New York “Beef Steak” (I call it New York strip) with cognac and port wine sauce (also dinner only) and the snapper meuniere (lunch and dinner).
