Debby Spawns Tornado, Twists Up Grand Hampton Community Weather Service Credits NTNeighborhoodNews.com For Providing First Link To Tornado Information By Matt Wiley Parts of New Tampa are still recovering from the effects of Tropical Storm Debby, which sat on top of the Tampa Bay area for days, bringing with it a barrage of wind, rain, tornadoes and flooding. From June 24-27, New Tampa residents tried to go about their everyday lives as Debby swirled overhead, as the storm stalled just offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Meteorologists showed projected paths stretching across the Gulf Coast from central Florida to Texas, and were never really sure what the system would do. While experts scratched their heads, Debby dumped more than 15 inches of rain on the Bay area, with 13.5 inches reported in New Tampa.

Along with the rain, Debby’s winds also caused severe power outages. A representative from the Tampa Electric Company (TECO) reported that more than 20,000 customers were without power during the storm’s peak. Besides flooding, the most dangerous part of a tropical storm is the possibility of tornadoes, eleven of which were reported after Debby all across Tampa Bay, including one that touched down in New Tampa. “I actually found out about it from someone sending me a link to your NTNeighborhoodNews.com article,” says National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist Dan Noah. “That’s how we go back after a storm to find out exactly how many (tornadoes) may have touched down — we work with the local news media.”

When a friend of mine asked me, “How come New Tampa doesn’t have its own fireworks display for the 4th of July?,” I responded that New Tampa needs to embrace and get more involved in the annual “Freedom Festival,” presented by the (noon) Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel. The Festival was held this year at the Shops at

Editorial - When We Can’t Be Everywhere, We Still Want To Help One of the best things about being your local, direct-mail community news magazine for more than 18 years is also, sometimes at least, one of the worst parts. I love it when people tell me about their upcoming events, especially when they’re local residents and/or business owners putting an event in either New Tampa or Wesley Chapel. Unfortunately, many times, because we publish both our New Tampa and Wesley Chapel editions only once a month most months, with Wesley Chapel coming out two weeks after New Tampa, followed by another New Tampa edition two weeks later (and so on), we sometimes get caught with in-between dates for some events that make it impossible for us to either preview the event in a specific New Tampa or Wesley Chapel issue that comes out in time beforehand or to follow up the event within a reasonable timeframe after it takes place — or sometimes both. That doesn’t mean we can’t cover that event, it just means that we may only be able to put the info about your event on our website (NTNeighborhoodNews.com) or that we may need you to provide information and pictures as promptly after the event as possible to get it in our next edition. And, we’re always happy to do so, as long as we have print space available and receive your info on a timely basis.

An editorial by Gary Nager As an example, when I realized that we didn’t receive information about a wonderful local effort to feed hungry families in and outside of our area in time to preview the event — which was held and sponsored in part by Wesley Chapel Toyota (located next to I-75, off S.R. 54 at Bruce B. Downs Blvd.) — I told my friend Scarleth Leon, who helped organize and promote the “Change This World” meal packing event on June 10, to help me follow it up in this space. Scarleth says, “The Change This World meal packing at Wesley Chapel Toyota was a huge success, not just in the amount of meals that were packed and donated, but also by the turnout and excitement of more than 300 volunteers from not only Wesley Chapel but around the Tampa Bay area.” Eric Johnson, the director of community relations for both Wesley Chapel Toyota & Honda, says the initial goal of 40,000 meals was surpassed and a total of 50,000 meals were packed that day — in only two hours! “We really want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped out,” Johnson says. “Your participation made the event go above and beyond our expectations.” Many restaurants delivered and donated food and refreshments for all the volunteers — some with last minute notice, including the Wesley Chapel Outback Steakhouse, Pagelli’s Italian Restaurant in the Shops at Wiregrass, Latin Twist Café, Hungry Greek and Baja Fresh on BBD, the new PDQ Restaurant and Texas Roadhouse on S.R. 56, the Wesley Chapel Beef O’Brady’s and Betty Cakes in Dade City, to name just a few.

Along with the meals being packed, there were exhibitor booths and displays for the local charities Wesley Chapel Toyota & Honda support, as well as for businesses that sponsored the event, not only financially, but with a “hands on” approach with their employees serving. Some of the local business sponsors were: Tampa Bay Downs, Ierna’s Heating & Cooling, Wesley Chapel Law Group, Keifer Village Jewels, The Gathering Church, World Class Multimedia and TD Bank. Face painters, a balloon twister and the “loving hands” oil paint canvas, kept approximately 75-plus kids entertained when they were not serving at the packing tables. Only two hours after the event started, all of the participants were extremely moved by the entire community coming together. “Amazingly, 50,000 children’s lives around the world were impacted by an event in Wesley Chapel today,” said Patrick Abad, the general manager of Wesley Chapel Toyota.

This is not the first time an event like this has been held here. Last year, 250 volunteers packed 40,000 meals at the same location, bringing the total to 90,000 meals in two years. N EW T AMPA Fatal New Tampa Crash Update

New details have emerged regarding the events leading up to a car accident that killed a Wesley Chapel man on June 5. According to the report from the Tampa Police Department (TPD), just before the fatal crash, the late William Gallagher, 19, of the Country Walk community of Wesley Chapel, left the K-Bar Ranch pool where he and some friends were congregating with two passengers — 16-year-old Charles Trimbl of Tampa and 21-year-old Camron Davis, also of Wesley Chapel. The trio traveled from K-Bar to the Shell station at the intersection of Cross Creek Blvd. and Kinnan St. in a grey 1998 Honda Accord and purchased beer and cigarettes. They never made it back to the pool. When his car flipped after hitting a curb, Gallagher was partially ejected and pinned underneath the vehicle, and was later pronounced dead at the scene. His two passengers could not confirm whether or not he was wearing a seat belt. Davis fled the scene, saying he couldn’t be caught there because “he was joining the military.” He later lied to TPD in an initial phone interview, denying having been involved in the accident. In a follow-up investigative interview, after being told by police that he was seen on surveillance cameras purchasing beer at the time the trio was said to be at the Shell station, Davis admitted to being involved in the accident, saying that he fled for fear of being arrested for “something.” Friends of Gallagher’s told TPD that he had been sending some strange text messages that night and seemed depressed about some personal issues, but none of the witnesses cited that as a reason for the fatal accident. A toxicology report on the deceased is still pending. This accident marked the twelfth traffic fatality for the City of Tampa this year and the 80th for Hillsborough County.

News Briefs Tanks & Tax Fraud In New Tampa

It’s not every day that an armored vehicle drives down a street inside a gated New Tampa community, especially in Cory Lake Isles. But, June 26 was a not a normal afternoon. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), extreme caution was taken while serving a search warrant for identity theft at 18041 Java Isles Dr. in the Cory Lake Isles community on Cross Creek Blvd. The two suspects, Elvis Martin, 28, and Rosa Moultry, 24, were not home during the search. While TPD’s Tactical Response Team (TRT) scoured the residence, the suspects pulled up in their gold 2006 Infiniti sedan to find their home being Martin searched. However, they did not stop. The report says that Martin drove the vehicle another four blocks before finally stopping for police. Once stopped, TPD found a 6-year-old Moultry child in the vehicle’s backseat, as well as marijuana in the back passenger door compartment, the odor of which, TPD officials say, was quite strong inside the vehicle. The child is now in the custody of one of the suspect’s cousins. Martin was taken into custody and charged with fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, but was later released on a $2,000 bond, despite the fact this was his 24th arrest in Hillsborough County. Moultry was taken into custody and charged with child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a child and possession of less than 20 grams of

cannabis; her 16th arrest in the county. Another published report says that TPD discovered 50 Turbo Tax cards in the home during the search, but confirmation was not available as of our press time, as this bust was part of an ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for TPD says that the TRT is used on all high-risk search warrants along with the V-150 Armored Personnel Carrier.

Clearwater Murder-Suicide Leaves Children Parentless

Two Wesley Chapel children will grow up without their parents following a domestic dispute that turned fatal in Clearwater on June 5. According to the Clearwater Police Department (CPD), around 3:45 a.m. on June 5, Eugene Agbebaku, 33, of Wesley Chapel broke into the Clearwater condo at 1279 Abbey Crescent Lane where his estranged wife Ingrid, 32, was staying. Once inside, Agbebaku shot Ingrid to death using a Russian-made assault rifle before walking across the street and shooting himself in front of her parent’s condo in the same complex. CPD says that the couple was in the process of getting a divorce and was supposed to appear in court that Tuesday. Ingrid had been staying at her grandmother’s condo with the couple’s two children, ages five and 22 months. Ingrid had recently been denied a restraining order against her estranged husband. CPD has ruled the case a murdersuicide and is not actively searching for any additional suspects.

S.R. 56 Businesses ‘Hammered’ By Barber

Salon at 1 a.m. June 16, however, was not a normal morning. After receiving a call that her salon, located on S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel, had been entered, she drove to the shop to Bateman find several Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies already at the scene. According to the PCSO report, Tampa resident and barber William Stevenson Bateman, 59, of 4720 El Dorado Dr., broke into Nirfa’s Salon around 12:30 a.m. on June 16, using a hammer to break the glass front door. Once inside, he stole a cash box containing an undisclosed amount of money. He also had already broken into Planet Beach, the business located directly next to Nirfa’s, from which he stole a computer valued at $1,500 and fled the scene in his blue Dodge minivan. PCSO deputies pursued the vehicle and arrested Bateman, who was charged with two counts each of unarmed burglary of an occupied conveyance, grand theft and possession of burglary tools after deputies confirmed the crimes that had been caught on Nirfa’s security camera. Roger Wolf, the owner of the adjacent Wolf’s Den restaurant in the same plaza, said the PCSO deputies, including a helicopter unit and several PCSO cruisers, were still at the scene looking for Bateman when the restaurateur arrived to do his breakfast prep work sometime after 3 a.m. “How unlucky was he (Bateman) that a deputy was circling around the plaza at that moment with his window rolled down and heard the glass breaking?,” said Wolf. — MW

However, imagine what would happen if the area were to be revitalized and redeveloped, with economic opportunities and jobs for the area’s unemployed. Commissioner Crist hopes to transform the areas highlighted on the map above into a new “Innovation Destination.” the BBD interchange and the New Tampa Gateway Bridge, which is on schedule to be completed by May 2013, is where the biggest opportunity lies to attract big businesses. “The area already has financial and insurance institutions such as USAA,” he explained. “That could be, and should be, a huge portion of this redevelopment district. There is available land and the infrastructure is there. So, any new research and development that we can bring in, that area is prime for

it, and it will help sustain the small businesses along BBD.” Crist continually emphasized the importance of redeveloping the area around USF and the impact it would have on New Tampa. “New Tampa has a tremendous amount of value to the redevelopment of the University area because of the direct, positive impact that (redevelopment) will have on New Tampa,” he said. “And, New Tampa is important to the University area because so many

New Tampa residents work at, or around, the University.” Crist also said that, according to the unemployment map, a large percentage of New Tampa residents work in those target areas for redevelopment, while the residents of the target areas either don’t work or work somewhere else in the county where they can find employment, mostly “blue-collar” work. The problem, he said, is that most of the jobs at or around USF are technically advanced. “We’ve got to attract more businesses that have both kinds of jobs and employment opportunities to help sustain the people who live in (the redevelopment area) and people who come into the area to work, as well,” he explained. “If anything new comes to the area, and the value of the property grows, then the taxes that are normally generated from that growth, instead of going into the general budget, get reallocated back into that specific target

area for reinvestment.” Imagine New Tampa and the University area filled with economic growth and new job opportunities, attracting large companies that supply thousands of jobs to the surrounding area. By redeveloping blighted areas like “Suitcase City” and creating a positive impact, Commissioner Crist’s vision to make New Tampa the linchpin of this planned “Innovation Destination” could become a reality. Outlet Mall, PHCC & Hospital To Be Pasco’s ‘Economic Engines!’ Economic growth in Pasco County is synonymous with the Wesley Chapel area. And, as more economic opportunities come to the area, such as the under-construction Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), the Tampa Prime Outlets at Cypress Creek Town Center and the Porter Campus of Pasco-Hernando Community College (PHCC), thousands of jobs and tax dollars are making their way into our area, as well. Pasco County administrator John Gallagher is among many local officials excited about the influx of local jobs. As previously reported in the New Tampa Neighborhood News, Simon Property Group has announced plans to open an outlet mall similar to the Ellenton Prime Outlets, with a Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th outlet store as one of its staples. But, that won’t be the only store bringing jobs to the area. Gallagher says that once the mall opens, which is currently expected to be sometime in 2014, it will bring more than 6,100 jobs to the Wesley Chapel/Lutz/Land O’Lakes/New Tampa area, which will ignite the local economy north and south of the Hillsborough-Pasco county line. “If their estimates are true, it will bring a lot of jobs to (Wesley Chapel),” Gallagher says. “It will offer a lot of

opportunities for young people in the area and definitely lower the (county’s) unemployment rate.” Gallagher says that a staff member of his spoke with representatives from Simon recently who said that they would be submitting their plans for the development in the next 60-90 days. And, not only will the outlet mall bring employment to thousands, he says, it also will bring more than $24 million in estimated sales and property taxes to the local economy. The Pasco County School Board, which has been the victim of intense budget cuts for the past five years, also will benefit from the mall, which will generate an estimated $1.5 million for the District. This influx of money should help to offset future cuts, similar to the more than $25 million that has been stripped from the District’s budget for the upcoming school year. Not far from the planned outlet mall, progress continues on the Porter Campus of PHCC, an addition to Wesley Chapel that District 2 Pasco County commissioner Pat Mulieri, Ed. because of its proximity to the other economic opportunities in the Wiregrass Ranch/ Wesley Chapel area. By Matt Wiley Our very own Florida House District 60 Representative Shawn Harrison (R-New Tampa) knows who he wants to see represent eastern Hillsborough County — which includes the New Tampa area — in the Florida Senate in the next legislative session. Rep. Harrison recently endorsed fellow Republican Tom Lee to represent District 24, which encompasses

State Rep. Shawn Harrison has endorsed... most of the eastern section of Hillsborough County, including all of Tampa Palms and New Tampa, all the way north to the Pasco County line. “An experienced and strong Senator representing Hillsborough County in the State Senate will be a great thing for our community and for my constituents,” says Harrison. “I have known Senator Lee since my days on the Tampa City Council. I believe his private-sector business experience and his conservative record make him the best choice in this race. I endorse him and look forward to working alongside him as fellow members of the Hillsborough County [legislative] delegation.”

Lee previously served for ten years in the Florida Senate and was Senate President in 2005-06, and it is this experience, along with his private sector business experience, that earned him Harrison’s endorsement. “Tom’s business background (as Vice President of Sabal Homes, his family’s business) is key,” he says. “He has experience as an elected official, but first and foremost, he has worked in the private sector. His ‘real-world’ business experience sets him apart from the competition and that’s what we need.” Harrison’s name also will be on the ballot in November, as he is running unopposed for the Republication nomination for re-election to the Florida House. Harrison has two Democratic opponents who square off against each other in the Primary Election on Tuesday, August 14. The former Tampa Palms Community Development District chair, District 7 (which includes all of New Tampa) Tampa City Council member and current District 60 Representative has been representing most of New Tampa in the Florida House since 2010. If elected, he will be the first representative of the newly drawn State

House District 63, to which all of New Tampa now belongs, after Florida’s newly rewritten legislative maps were approved by Gov. Rick Scott ...Former Florida and the Florida Supreme Court Senate Pres. Tom Lee this year. “I do miss the days when I would only be up for re-election every four years (in City Council),” Harrison says. “But, I’m happy with how my campaign is going so far. There is a larger Democratic presence in my new District, but I’ve worked really hard the last 15 years as an elected official, both as a member of the City Council and as a State Representative, and I think people will recognize that.” Harrison says that for now, he and his campaign team are going to begin “walking and knocking,” going doorto-door to introduce Harrison to voters, let them know what issues he represents and why he should be re-elected to represent New Tampa in the Florida legislature for another term.

It’s never too early to get your band pre-qualified to be part of the Teenage Battle of the Bands held annually in mid-October during the Hillsborough County Fair. Hillsborough County’s Parks, Recreation & Conservation Department is looking for bands to participate in a competition that provides free studio time to the top two winners. Band members must be between 13-20 years of age, and only one band member can be age 20. The entry fee is $50 dollars and only a limited number of bands will be accepted. WalMart Supercenter On BBD Hosts The World’s Biggest Potato! By Matt Wiley Giving a whole new meaning to the term “hot potato,” a 28-foot long, 12,000-pound “Great Big Idaho Potato” sat outside of the Walmart Supercenter on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa (acrross from Regents Park Dr. in Pebble Creek) on June 30. Sitting atop a fire-engine red, 48-foot flatbed trailer, the huge spud has been putting on some serious miles as it makes its way across the country in celebration of the 75th year of the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC). “We’re on a seven-month tour,” said 23-year-old Ellis Nanney, who

has been traveling with the potato since it left Idaho in April. “We’re making stops at local supermarkets to spread the word that potatoes can be very healthy, if they’re made correctly.” Nanney says that he is used to the wide-eyed reactions that he gets from most people when they first see the six-ton spud. “It’s big,” said Jason Grady, as he and his wife Doris admired the potato. “It’s definitely the biggest potato in New Tampa.” The giant potato truly is a marvel. If it were real, it would have been more than 10,000 years in the making and would take two years and nine months to bake. It also

would make more than 1.4 million French fries or 30,325 servings of mashed potatoes. The giant potato’s ongoing tour also is helping to raise awareness for the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), to which the IPC recently donated $100,000 to help more than 5,000 MOWAA programs around the country keep America’s elderly nourished, including here in Tampa. The Grand Hampton Homeowners Association (HOA) would not release any details about how many homes had been damaged, what the estimated cost of that damage may have been or make any comment about whether or not a tornado actually touched down in the community. Even after the tornado was confirmed by the NWS, we could not get a spokesperson for the Grand Hampton Homeowners Association to comment on the damage to the homes caused by Debby in the community.

Local Resident Wins Bikini Bodybuilding Title! By Michael Murillo Maintaining the discipline to become a bodybuilder is an impressive achievement. Actually participating in a sanctioned competition is a rare accomplishment, and eventually winning a division in one would be a highlight of any athlete’s career. But, by winning her Bikini division in just her second competition — the 30th Annual Tampa Bay Classic Bodybuilding Championships held June 9 at Gaither High School — New Tampa resident Morgan Ferrera recognizes that she already has accomplished something special. “I was still in shock from winning my actual class, and then when they announced my number again as the overall winner for the entire Bikini division, I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” said Ferrera. “I couldn't believe it.” Ferrera’s victory is a local success story. After attending Freedom High, she attended Florida State University and the University of South Florida. Now 23, she lives in Tampa Palms and her father, Dr. Robert Ferrera, is a popular local dentist and New Tampa Rotary Club member. His Ferrera Dental Associates has served North and New Tampa for more than 25 years.

In the Bikini category, competitors were placed into four division based on height (Ferrera was in group B). After being judged on front and back poses and comparisons with other entrants, Ferrera was named her group’s winner. Next, she took the stage against the best of the other groups in a posedown for the title of Overall Bikini Category winner. Ferrera also took first in the Overall, earning a trophy that nearly matches her 5’-3” stature. Ferrera might have had a short path to success in competitive bodybuilding, but it wasn’t an easy one: Five days a week of weight training, seven days a week of cardio training (the latter including 45 minutes on a stairclimbing machine followed by a leg circuit workout), a strict diet consisting of frequent, smaller meals throughout the day and an accelerated workout and eating schedule as the competition drew closer — all under the supervision and guidance of her coach, Aimee Bien. While her aggressive schedule was physically taxing, those weren’t the only challenges she faced in preparing for competition. “The mental challenge is the hardest part,” Ferrera said. “There were days I didn’t want to get out of bed at 6 a.m. to do cardio, or go back to the gym after a full day of school and

work, but I did it anyway.” Avoiding food and drink her friends enjoyed was also frustrating, but she relied on support from her boyfriend, Chris Shultz, and trained with another bodybuilder, Kathi Ellington, to keep positive influences in her corner during the four months she prepared for the event. ‘Appreciated’ Chamber Members Meet Wild Things In Dade City! If you (or your child) love animals, you owe it to yourself to visit Dade City’s Wild Things (DCWT), the 22acre zoo located just 30 minutes or so from most of New Tampa, near the Pasco Hernando Community College campus in the heart of Dade City. As a proud member and supporter of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (in addition, of course, to the New Tampa Chamber), I was thrilled to be one of fewer than 200 people who got to attend the Chamber’s “Member Appreciation Night” at DCWT. We also were treated to free raffle prizes, a sumptuous buffet meal provided by my friend Ghada Jadallah of A Dash of Salt & Pepper (located on Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa) and a modified walking tour of the monkeys, bison, ostriches, macaws, bears and especially the animals that so captivated me as a youngster — plenty of big cats! DCWT has more than 200 species of animals, but I especially loved the zoo’s full-grown lions, tigers (including white tigers) and Florida panthers, as well as the 10-month-old lion “cub” named “Leonardo, King of Beasts,” and four amazingly cute two-monthold tiger cubs. The cubs get so close to you during DCWT’s awesome animal show — which we also got to enjoy — that you’re practically holding the cute critters in your lap. Full Circle Pizza & Grill — New Tampa’s Taste Of Chicago! By Gary Nager While most of us who aren’t from the Windy City only think of deep dish pizza as being “Chicago-style,” longtime Chicago resident Ron Chase, the owner of the all-new Full Circle Pizza & Grill in the Pebble Creek Collection on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. has something special he would love for you to try. Ron has been around our area long enough to remember the old Mama Mae’s Pizza, the original tenant in this location in the Collection and he admits he loved (as I did) Circles New Tampa Bistro, the tenant that replaced Mama Mae’s. I told him that although Circles was my favorite restaurant in New Tampa literally every year since it opened, I also enjoyed the true New York-style pizza served at Bella Vita, which replaced Circles. In other words, there’s been a lot of great pizza and Italian food served in the space now occupied by Full Circle Pizza (a name Ron came up with in tribute to Circles and because he hopes this location has now come “full circle”), but Ron, a first-time restaurateur, hopes that everyone in our area who loves great food at excellent prices will come check out his unique new menu.

And, after several visits to Full Circle Pizza, I can assure you that Ron’s food is not only different than anything else in the area, it’s also delicious. On my most recent visit, I took our entire office to a sampling of Ron’s wonderful cuisine and we were joined by several members of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce (see page 22). We sampled three different crispy, thin-crust brick-oven pizzas (the “traditional” South Chicago Italian sausage and cheese pie, a tasty BBQ pizza with BBQ brisket on one half and BBQ chicken on the other, and an awesome chicken and pesto pie), several different sandwiches (see below), a savory Full Circle salad (try the Jalapeno ranch, creamy Caesar and wasabi oriental dressings), perfect garlic knots served with a chunky and thick marinara dipping sauce and more. Ron’s been refining his tomato sauces — both his pizza sauce and his marinara and meat sauces — and I think they’re all outstanding. The meatballs in his meatball sub (I will definitely order it as a meatball parmigiana next time) are very flavorful and the meatballs are the right size — and the oventoasted Italian bread is to die for. Although I can’t eat shrimp, everyone who sampled the shrimp wrap sandwich

(which isn’t even on the menu) raved about it. Ron also served us a thick-slice BBQ beef brisket sandwich slathered in a zesty BBQ sauce and most everyone at the table’s favorite — the authentic Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich, heated in its own gravy/ natural juices on a Chicago turano roll with sauteed mild green peppers and hot gardinera peppers. You can even order Chicago beef and gardinera peppers on a pizza. YUM! Fushia To Become KTV Asian Café - Those of us who appreciate New York-style Chinese food will be happy to learn that the activity you may have seen in the same Shoppes of Amberly plaza on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms where our office is located is merely an expansion and impending name change for the existing Fushia Asian Bistro (903-6705). My friends Sharon and Charlie Wang, the owners of Fushia, have taken over the adjacent former “Kidz Club” location and have transformed it into KTV (as in “Karaoke TV”) Asian Café, an even more impressive-looking restaurant with six private karaoke “salons” for 530 people. Sharon and Charlie have brought in a new chef with plenty of experience in New York City for KTV Café, and have added authentic rotating dim sum (appetizer) trays where you can sample dozens of New York-style dim sum specials and then hang out after dinner in one of the karaoke salons. We were getting ready to participate in a special preview event at KTV Café as this issue went to press, so look for a more complete update soon. Peabody’s Goes Smokeless! No, that’s not a misprint! After years of requests from yours truly and many of its other regular customers, Peabody’s Billiards (972-1725), which also is located next to our offices in the Shoppes of Amberly plaza, is now a smoke-free environment! Yes, smokers are still welcome on the covered outdoor patio, but smoking has been banned inside Peabody’s for several days now, as the popular pool hall and entertainment venue concentrates more

on its food — including the unveiling of an all-new, expanded menu (like outstanding new hand-cut fries!) to go with the best wings in New Tampa (in my opinion), great NY-style pizza and even a quality sirloin steak special on Friday nights. The eye candy and TVs are still everywhere, so please visit the new, smoke-free Peabody’s soon and please tell them we sent you! More Restaurant Comings & Goings - Three of the eateries we told you about last issue — Baja Fresh Mexican Grill (388-6898), the adjacent iCream Café (both located next to The Hungry Greek on BBD) and PDQ Fresh Tenders, Salads & Sandwiches on S.R. 56 (directly in front of Sam’s Club) have all opened and are already attracting interested customers. I have to admit that PDQ’s crispy chicken tenders and hand-cut fries, zesty dipping sauces and amazing shakes are new guilty pleasures of mine, while Baja Fresh’s wahoo (not a misprint) tacos are a little less guilt-inducing. And, iCream’s space-age approach to providing the coldest ice cream, frozen yogurt and shakes, plus hot pudding desserts, all with all sorts of mixins and toppings, has to be tasted to really be believed. Hopefully, the third time will be the charm for the location that previously was home to Santo’s Pizza & Pasta and, more recently, Drake’s Place in the Pinebrook at The Grove plaza (on S.R. 54 west of I-75 in Wesley Chapel). The new restaurant is still, for now, also being called Drake’s Place, but is under new ownership with a new chef, karaoke and bike nights and a whole new, friendlier attitude.

And, in the bad news (at least for me) department, both the delicious Boardwalk Frozen Custard on S.R. 56 and the Aja Wiregrass restaurant and night club in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, which attracted a nicely dressed mix of everyone from 20s to 60s, had closed before our press time. We had not yet heard anything about possible replacements for either eatery. Ribbon Cuttings & Mixers - It seems that there are fewer of these free events in the summer, but we still got to attend a few before our press time. Among the most recent was a Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at the new A&A Boutique (528-8765), located at 2653 BBD Blvd., Suite 108, in the same plaza as Baja Fresh & iCream Café. Twin 16-year-old sisters and boutique owners Allie and Amber Malott and their mom Lori call A & A Boutique, a “high-end couture consignment shop for men and women.” A & A features designer items by Versace, Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo

and Louis Vuitton and the sisters, who hope to be fashion designers themselves one day, say customers can expect to pay 50-75 percent less than what’s being sold on retail shelves, and consigners can look forward to a 50-80 percent return on items consigned and sold — and promise to have items you won’t be able to find at the Shops at Wiregrass or International Plaza. We also recently attended a free after-hours mixer at Kelly Mothershead’s A Focus on Fitness (3443325) studio, which was celebrating two years in the same location, where Kelly is part of Star Ryan’s Star’s Organic Spa Group (2136 Ashley Oaks Cir., in the Seven Oaks Professional Park; 973-8787). Around 100 people attended and enjoyed great wrap sandwiches, fresh fruit and other healthy snacks, free raffle prizes...and maybe a glass of wine. Trout Creek Commons Still Leasing Big things are happening at the intersection of Trout Creek Dr. and Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. The Colonial Grand Apartments at Hampton Preserve are open and nearly completed and in front of the apartments, a new AutoZone auto parts store is being constructed on the corner outparcel. And, in the near future, several more businesses should be opening their doors in the recently completed retail center adjacent to Auto Zone, which will be known as Trout Creek Commons. The still-vacant, 11-unit, 15,000sq.-ft. strip center was completed early this year and is still leasing to businesses that are interested. And, considering that the plaza is located in front of the nearly-completed Colonial Grand complex, a 486-unit, luxury multi-family development, the shopping plaza will soon see a considerable amount of traffic moving past it each day. “I have a few businesses looking,” says Maher Alagal, president of Maher Properties Group of Tampa and owner of the property. “I am negotiable on price and can lease individual units or a whole building.” The only confirmed tenant for the plaza — which currently is conducting an interior build-out is “fast casual”
