Neighborhood News Online Celebrates Six Months Of Google-Funded Videos! An editorial by Gary Nager When we received the first installment of our funding from the Google News Initiative on January 14, we made a number of promises to our benefactors regarding the number of videos we’d put online, the number of people we’d hire to shoot, edit and be on-air talent for those videos and the equipment we would need to fulfill our commitments. As of two weeks ago, it has now been six months since we received that funding and I’d have to say that we are right on track. To me, the most important milestone for us to reach was the increase in the number of videos we would be releasing. Before our Google funding, we averaged one video every other week. But, we have now put out 48 videos in 24 weeks (with several videos in the can getting ready for release at out press time) since Jan. 14, or an average of right at two each week. And, more and more of you are watching those videos. In the nearly three years since we first started Wesley Chapel & New Tampa Television (WCNT-tv) —now called NeighborhoNewsOnline.net (search “Neighborhood News” on Facebook or “WCNT-tv” on YouTube) — we have flown past a million total views and nearly two million people reached on Facebook. The 48 videos we have put online since January alone have been viewed more than 250,000 times and have reached nearly a halfmillion people. Perhaps even more important is that those 48 videos have received a total of more than 40,000 “engagements” (Likes, Shares & Comments), or an average of about 900 per video! How many local videos/posts do you know of that have had 1,000 engagements? We continue to reach our biggest audience whenever we put out videos about food, as our two videos about the opening of the new Chickfil-A on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel each garnered more than 12,000 views and combined reached

Our biggest reach this year has been achieved by our video about the new Smallcakes Cupcakery in Tampa Palms, which also had more than 12,000 views, and a reach of more than 22,000 people! Even more recently, my “Neighborhood Dining News” segment about Hummingbird Jerk House and Full Circle Pizza (see my “Neighborhood Nibbles & Business Bytes” column on pg. 38) released on May 29 already has been viewed more than 7,000 times and reached more than 11,000 people.

We currently have four print advertisers who are sponsoring our videos and online content, as part of their Video & Online “Subscription” program, and each of them has or will receive a Video Business Feature (VBF). Those advertisers are Total Air Solutions (see ad on pg. 10), Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam Edmonson (pg. 31), Omari’s Grill at Lexington Oaks Golf Club (see pg. 39) and KAP Medical Group (pg. 19). We have not yet released the VBF for Omari’s but the recent VBF about Total Air Solutions (6,300 views, 9,200 reach on FB and 800 engagements) and Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam (5,500 views, 9,200 FB reach & nearly 1,000 engagements) have done very well. Total Air, which was our first “subscriber,” has already been shown as a sponsor of ten videos in nine weeks, and those videos have been viewed nearly 60,000 times, with a Facebook reach of more than 100,000 people and nearly 8,000 engagements. Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam has sponsored eight videos in seven weeks, and those videos have been viewed more than 40,000 times, with a FB reach of more than 77,000 and more than 7,100 engagements. Omari’s had only sponsored four videos in five weeks at our press time, but they had been viewed more than 16,000 times, with a FB reach of nearly 30,000, with nearly 1,400 engagements. And, thanks to Omari’s co-owner Susana Herrera, who spent 20 years as a reporter and anchor in her native Colombia, including eight years on the Colombian CBN Network, our KAP Medical video was shot in English (with yours truly asking the questions) and in Spanish (with Susana interviewing fellow Latina Dr. Karina Parilo en Español; see photo). The English version of KAP’s video (nearly 5,000 views) has had more views than the Spanish version (about 3,000), but not bad for our first effort en Espanol — with still more to come, so stay tuned! Road Work Ongoing In & Around Wesley Chapel The Florida Department of Transportation's plate is full of projects that will impact area commuters.
By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneighborhoodnewscom
Although traffic and congestion are part of daily life for those driving around Wesley Chapel and New Tampa, getting out of the area is only the beginning of what can be a long and teeth-gnashing chore for area commuters. For folks heading to work in Tampa or St. Petersburg, once the Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd./S.R. 56/S.R. 54 maze is completed, it’s onto the local interstates, which offer their own headaches. But, there are efforts now ongoing to change that. David Gwynn, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 7 secretary of transportation, who spoke at the June 2 North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce breakfast at Pasco Hernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, provided some promising updates about a host of

road improvements FDOT currently is working on or has planned that will have an effect on traffic faced by Wesley Chapel drivers. “We’ve got some big projects going on,” Gwynn said, adding that one of the biggest challenges at the moment is finding enough contractors to do all the work at reasonable prices, due to a bustling economy. “We’re probably taxing the construction industry,” he said. “That’s probably the thing we worry about the most.” Locally, Gwynn said David Gwynn, the Florida Department of Transportation’s the roadwork that will District 7 secretary of transportation, told the North Tampa impact travel around Wes- Bay Chamber that FDOT’s plate is filled with transportation ley Chapel is the work on projects that will one day help Wesley Chapel commuters. east-west roads like S.R. 56 (which is being extended), it and will probably provide the biggest S.R. 54 (which is being widened) and benefit of all.” S.R. 52 (which is being extended). Outside of Wesley Chapel, But…
Notably for local commuters heading to work, improvements are coming to two major Tampa trouble spots — the north- and southbound exit lanes at I-4 and I-75 and the stretch of I-275 from Bearss Ave. to the 275/I-4 interchange, better known as “malfunction junction.” While the I-75 project is well under way — in fact, the northbound ramp from I-4 to I-75 already has been completed — the enhancements on I-275 are still only in the planning stages, but cleared a major hurdle on June 11, when, after a five-hour debate, the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) voted 11-5 to keep the project in its 5-year transportation plan. The leading proposal to fix the congestion problem is to transform I-275 from three lanes in each direction between Bearss Ave. (and the interchange at I-4) to four lanes while “hardening” the shoulder for emergency vehicles and buses. The project also would include enhancements at malfunction junction. The I-275 proposal continues to draw strong opposition from many Sem-

MPO Votes In Favor Of Connections, Just Not Kinnan-Mansfield trians, but not for cars and trucks, would connect the two counties at that location. The final vote to settle the roadways question likely will be held on Tuesday, July 9, in Dade City. Considering that all five members on the Pasco BOC also are on the MPO that voted unanimously in favor of Option 3, it is almost certain to pass.
By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneighborhoodnews.com As far as Pasco County is concerned, the long-debated connection of Kinnan St. in New Tampa to Mansfield Blvd. in Meadow Pointe — a 30-foot or so patch of grass, dirt, weed and garbage — is dead. The Pasco County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) was presented June 11 with the results from its recent online Pasco Resident Survey, which asked which roadway connections between Meadow Pointe and New Tampa were preferred. The MPO voted unanimously to forward the second-most popular option, Option 3 — connecting both the Meadow Pointe Blvd. Extension and Wyndfields Blvd. to K-Bar Ranch Pkwy. in New Tampa’s K-Bar Ranch community — to the Pasco Board of County Commissioners (BOC) for a final vote on a day to be scheduled. The most popular option (No. 2) on the online survey was connecting just Meadow Pointe Blvd. to K-Bar Ranch Pkwy., with 67 percent of respondents saying they would be in favor of it. Both options that involved the controversial connection of Kinnan St. and Mansfield did receive a majority of yes votes. “Everybody that came today spoke against opening up Kinnan and Mansfield,” said District 2 Commissioner Mike Moore, who represents the Meadow Pointe area.
Interesting Results
In the online survey, county residents were given four options. Option 1, which asked if residents would be in favor “There was one person who was in favor of of connecting Kinnan to Mansfield as well as it, and he lives in New Tampa.” the Meadow Pointe Blvd. Extension to K-Bar Meghan McKinney of the consulting Ranch Pkwy., received a “yes” vote by 54 firm AECOM, which conducted the initial percent of respondents. Downs” when it comes to keeping Mansfield Blvd. from connecting to Kinnan St.
She said the “fraud” that happened is well known and public knowledge, although she offered no proof of it. A majority of those saying no to any connections involving Mansfield Blvd. came from those who live along the road. They were signified by red dots on a map showing where the respondents resided. “I’m a red dot because I’m the father of two boys that ride their bikes up and down (Mansfield) every day to go to school,” said Meadow Pointe II resident Brad Jorgensen. Like many of those opposed to connecting Kinnan St. to Mansfield Blvd., Jorgensen cited the safety of children in the neighborhoods along the road. “This is about not turning our neighborhood into alternate Bruce B. Downs,” Jorgensen said. There was no online option provided to just connect Kinnan-Mansfield, nor was it an option that was studied in the year-long Roadways Connections Study commissioned by the county. The least popular option from the survey results was No. 4, which would have connected Mansfield Blvd., the Meadow Pointe Blvd. Extension and Wyndfields Blvd. — in other words, all three potential connection — to the New Tampa area. Even so, a majority of those responding, 52 percent, voted in favor of that option as well.

Big Changes Coming To WaterGrass By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Florida Medical Clinic (FMC) is set to be the first occupant of the long-planned Promenade Business Centre located at the Curley Rd. entrance to the WaterGrass community. But, it won’t be the last. On June 19, Pasco’s Board of County Commissioners approved a large-scale comprehensive plan amendment, amending the Future Land Use designation for the property from TC (Town Center) to PD (Planned Development) on 77 acres at the northeast and southeast corners of the Curley Rd. intersection with Overpass Rd. The Promenade Business Centre PD will consist of an employment center within the Watergrass Master Planned Unit Development (MPUD). The business park concept, according to the background summary, “proposes mixed-use development that incorporates office, retail and multi-family/townhomes with a focus on Business Park uses that encourages target industry job creation.” The Promenade Business Centre would add roughly 1.2 million square feet of corporate business park uses, including for such things as medical clinics, corporate headquarters, research and development facilities and business accessory retail (like food service within an office complex) uses. The development may also feature multistory buildings that would incorporate uses such as cafeterias, restaurants, banks, health or
fitness facilities, meeting rooms, co-working spaces, off-street parking and on-site day care facilities, according to the summary. The parcels proposed for the business center also would include two parks and Pasco Fire Rescue Station 38, a 10,843-sq.ft. facility which broke ground last year and is expected to open this fall. A new charter school, next to Station 38, also is in the concept plans.

World-class cataract care has always been in Tampa Check Out These Local Events For the 4th! By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneighborhoodnews.com
There are lots of options for Wesley Chapel residents looking for some local Fourth of July fun and fireworks, but the best option may be the annual celebration right on S.R. 54 at the Avalon Park West (APW) community. For the sixth straight year, APW will hold its Fourth of July celebration, which is expected to draw thousands of festive frolickers — and many from the surrounding areas, including Tampa — as it continues to grow in popularity. “Last year, we had 2-3,000 people, which was definitely the biggest crowd we ever had,” says Marielle Fernandez, APW’s marketing and events coordinator. “It’s grown every year.” While APW is a growing mixed-use community with roughly 2,000 residents, Marielle says more than half of those that come for the fireworks are actually not APW residents. The celebration is scheduled for 5 p.m.9 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, and as usual the event will include a host of activities to keep families entertained. While last year’s celebration featured a pie bake-off, this year it will be called a “Patriotic Bake-Off” and will include pies, brownies, cakes and cookies. There also will be a bike parade (strollers and wagons welcome) beginning at 6 p.m., with kids showing off their decorating skills, and Fernandez says there will be more food trucks, vendors and community performances than ever. “I think the response has been really great,” Fernandez says. “It’s nice having something for the community to come together and celebrate. And, we’re happy we’ve become that hub where they come to enjoy the Fourth of July.” You have to register for the bike parade and bake-off. To do so, and for more information, visit AvalonParkWest.com. DINNER & A SHOW!: For those who are interested in a sit-down dinner followed by fireworks, our friends Anass El-Omari and his wife Susana Herrera of Omari’s Grill at the Lexington Oaks Golf Course (which is closed for renovations) are hosting a delicious, family-friendly, openNeighborhood News
to-the-public celebration on the 4th, with hamburgers and BBQ chicken on the grill (plus side dishes) served from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. There also will be live music, a premium alcohol cash bar and what Susana promises will be an impressive professional fireworks display. Reservations are definitely suggested, because brunch events at Omari’s Grill have been known to sell out and people love barbecues and fireworks for the 4th. The cost is just $14.99 per person (ages 13+), with kids ages 4-12 just $5.99. Please note that no outside food or drink will be permitted during this event. For reservations, call (813) 9077270 or see the ad on pg. 39 of this issue for more information. New Mayor of Tampa Jane Castor announced shortly after being elected that the city will host a “Boom by the Bay” fireworks spectacle, which she says will be “sparking a brand-new tradition in Tampa.” Tampa’s Fourth of July celebration will feature four fireworks displays spanning 2.5 miles of the city’s majestic waterfront, from Armature Works to Riverfront Park to the Tampa Convention Center and over to Sparkman Wharf. There will be activities for the family and live entertainment as well. “I want to kick off my time in office with a big bang,” Mayor Castor said in a video posted to social media announcing the event. You can text the word BOOM to 888 777 to receive special notifications about “Boom by the Bay.” @NTWCNews

Lots Of Stuff Is ‘Brewing’ On The Local Business Scene By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneightborhoodnews.com Although he can’t yet name every occupant, Regency Centers senior leasing agent Marc Elias said The Village at Hunter’s Lake project now under construction a few miles south of County Line Rd. on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., is sold out. Elias was the guest speaker at the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Briefing at Hunter’s Green Country Club on June 20. While Sprouts, the first green grocer to enter the New Tampa market, is the anchor of the retail strip, other occupants previously reported by the Neighborhood News are Banfield Pet Hospital, The Coder School, Grain & Berry, Hair Cuttery, Heartland Dental, Nationwide Vision Center, Pink & White Nails, Poke Island Plus, Pure Beauty Salon, Starbucks, T-Mobile and Via Italia Woodfired Pizza & Bar. At the Chamber briefing, Elias also said that Fresh Kitchen has signed a lease. Fresh Kitchen is owned by the Ciccio Restaurant Group, which also owns such notable restaurants as Taco Dirty, Green Lemon, betterBYRD and Ciccio Cali, which has a location in Tampa Palms.

The Village at Hunter’s Lake retail center is coming out of the ground across Bruce B. Downs Blvd. from the main entrance to the Hunter’s Green community in New Tampa.
Fresh Kitchen, which already has locations in South Tampa on S. Howard Ave. and W. Kennedy Blvd., focuses on healthy bowls, where patrons choose their base, protein, vegetable and any extras. Elias added that a running store and a “yoga concept” have signed leases as well. The Village at Hunter’s Lake will have 71,397 sq. ft. of commercial space. The project also will include a 30,000-sq.ft. New Tampa Cultural Center, two dog parks and a four-story, 241-unit multifamily complex to be called The Haven at Hunter’s Lake.
The retail shells are expected to be completed by November of this year, although the rain has been slowing down construction. Tenants can move in whenever they are ready, though Elias suspects they will open sometime around April 2020, when the Sprouts is expected to be completed. + Field, which closed on 2015, into a brewery with a beer garden, full-service restaurant and event space. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brew Bus Brewing Inc., Anthony Derby, told the Neighborhood News last month that his company was taking a close look at the property, located at 2029 Arrowgrass Dr., and saw a craft brewery as a missing part of the local Wesley Chapel/ New Tampa bar/dining scene. “We are excited to expand our operations into Pasco County to provide the community with a family-friendly brewery, event and restaurant destination,” Derby said. “By this time next year, Pasco residents will not only be working in our expanded operation, but also enjoying our products a bit closer to home.” The completed deal is expected to create 46 new local jobs and more than $8.7 million in new capital investment in Pasco County. Brew Bus Brewing, Inc., created in 2011, currently operates both a brewery on N. Florida Ave. and buses that travel to breweries throughout the Tampa Bay area. In addition to brewing its own Brew Bus beer, the brand expanded in 2015, with the acquisition of Florida Avenue Brewing Co., in an effort to revive one of the area’s most historic breweries. DOGGIE DINING: Dining out with Fido is popular with folks who prefer taking their dogs wherever they go, but restaurants allowing this need to get permits to do so. Pasco County is cracking down on those who don’t. Since passing the Doggie Dining Ordinance in 2017, only a handful of local restaurants have applied, although more than that advertise themselves as being dog-friendly. The county says it has received complaints about some of those who don’t have the proper permits. Since the county announced stricter enforcement, restaurants are scrambling
to avoid the $500 fine and meet the requirements for allowing dogs to dine in, such as: * Providing separate access for dogs from the outdoors. * Having a waterless sanitizer at every table. * Dogs are not allowed on the furniture. * Restaurant owners can have selected hours and days that dogs are welcome * The doggie dining area must be clearly marked by the restaurant owner. According to BringFido.com, there are 17 dog-friendly restaurants in Wesley Chapel. Two that aren’t on the list, Ford’s Garage and Chuy’s, are two of the restaurants that have applied for a permit over the past two weeks.
Commissioner Moore, however, said it is the bins themselves that begin the process of sites turning into junkyards. Commissioner Kathryn Starkey called the bins “magnets” for junk haulers to unload their stuff. Moore said he suspects some of the junk dumpers are professionals who get paid to haul away large items but then decide to unload it somewhere other than the nearest junkyard — the Pasco County Transfer Station (PCTS) at 9626 Handcart Rd. in Dade City — to avoid paying a fee. The PCTS charges $2.96 for every 100 pounds dumped. When the county has to clean up these eyesores, it is at the taxpayers’ expense, Moore says. On May 21 at a Board of County Commissioners meeting in New Port Richey, Moore suggested that the county ban unmanned collection bins altogether, which would affect legitimate collection bins like those used for recycling and those used by churches. County assistant attorney Kristi Sims said that the county would “quite definitely” be sued. “I cannot stand up here and tell you we will win,” Sims said. What the county has done is that it
has begun monitoring various sites and seizing bins, and some sites that have been cleared out have since been repopulated with more bins — or more junk. The county also sent 40 letters to property owners where the bins are being placed, asking if they had given permission; 15 of those letters involved bins from one company. About 20 have responded, “and not a single one has said they gave permission,” Moore said. Those who haven’t replied have until July 1 to do so. Sims suggested that Moore hold off on pushing for a ban and allow for renewed enforcement efforts this summer to take hold. “Let’s see how this shakes out,” she said. Moore said the county needs to end the problem as soon as possible. He is promoting strict enforcement of the ordinance and stiff penalties — including third-degree felony charges for dumping more than 500 pounds (or 100 cubic feet in volume), which carries with it up to five years in prison. “I’m frustrated,” Moore said, “That’s why we’re taking it to next level. Now, we’re going to go out, and we’re going to catch them. We’re going to prosecute (them). We need to catch a few of them, and if they meet the criteria for a felony, they are going to be in bad shape.”

Northwood Resident Celebrates 100 Years Of Good Living By JOHN C. COTEY
john@ntneightborhoodnews.com It’s almost naptime for Northwood resident Marion Brown. It is a week before her 100th birthday, it’s late in the afternoon, she has eaten lunch, the couch is comfortable and, little by little, she appears to be blissfully sinking in. Florette Brown, sitting next to her mother, just smiles. “She knows when it is time for bed,” Florette says. “She will remind you. Born June 4, 1919, in Spanish Town, the capital of the parish of St. Catherine in the historic county of Middlesex, Jamaica, Brown achieved a rare milestone when she turned 100 earlier this month. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, there were 72,197 Americans ages 100 and older in 2014 and a good clean life has helped make Marion one of them. She celebrated her 100th with flowers and a cake, but the real party took place on June 9, when more than 100 friends and relatives attended a large party in her honor at Compton Park in Tampa Palms. They flew in from Jamaica, Canada and the United Kingdom for a night of singing, dancing and sharing stories about Marion’s glorious century of living.
(Above) Florette Brown leans over to ask her mother, 100-year-old Marion Brown, about the year she got married. (Photos by Gavin Olsen)
“She loves having her family around,” Florette says. “And they love coming over to see her. When they come over, they love going to her room and dancing for her. She enjoys all of them.” Marion grew up in Jamaica, hanging out in groups and going to parties, playing cricket and going for Sunday walks after church. She taught kindergarten for years, and helped run the family dry cleaning business after that.
She married Clifford George in 1945, and they were together for more than 50 years, until he passed away in 1997. She came to the United States in 2007 to live with the eldest of her three daughters, Shelia, and now lives with daughters Delrose and Florette in Northwood.
And The Secret Is...
Marion says that the secret to getting to a century young is simple:
clean and peaceful living. No smoking, no alcohol, lots of church and family and a well-balanced diet of good food like curried goat, jerk chicken, fish and rice and peas. And, maybe, the occasional French fry. Marion spends her days watching the news, and will often sit and look out the window. There is the occasional trip to the store or to see a doctor. Helping care for an elderly parent can be difficult work — Marion has a caregiver who assists — but it can also be an immeasurable joy, says Delrose. “It’s very interesting, because growing up sometimes, you don’t really have the time to be clued in,” she says. “But now, sitting with her, it’s different. She tells us stories about our grandparents and great grandparents, and shares with us our history.” Sometimes, she regales her daughters with stories from World War II, when she says the lights had to stay off at night so the buildings couldn’t be seen in the distance. Young men in Jamaica — and the other British colonies — did what they could to avoid being recruited to fight for Britain, and sometimes would be lured out of hiding by music and then sent off to fight. On the day we talked with Marion,

she was quiet. When she wants to talk, however, she talks and talks. ‘Sometimes I want to watch the news, and I’m sitting there with her, and she goes on and on,” Florette says, chuckling. “She’ll ask if I remember something and I say no, and she’ll say you don’t remember anything, but that’s because I’m trying to listen to the news.” Marion remains lucid, her daughters say. She points out people on TV she recognizes, remembers everyone’s birthday, and if someone stops by without their significant other, she will ask about that person. When Florette mentioned to her she was 100 before her birthday, Marion corrected her: “No…next week.” Two years ago, she was honored back
home as being the oldest living member of her church. At the age of 98, she made the flight back home with ease. “She said by hook or crook, I am going to Jamaica,” Delrose says, laughing. Great granddaughter Mariah, a recent Wiregrass Ranch High graduate, is the youngest in the family. Marion also has three granddaughters — Shelly-Ann Tillman, Andrene Cole and Denie Watts. Mariah says her friends think it is pretty cool that she has a 100-year-old great grandmother. Even Marion finds it all a little hard to believe sometimes. “Sometimes she’ll reminisce and ask, ‘Am I really 100?,’” Florette says. “I tell her, ‘Yes Mom, it’s really true.’”

Farina Orthodontic Specialists — Combining Technology & Caring Radical Transparency?
By ANDY WARRENER
If you were to wear a GoPro camera during your dental appointment at any of the three offices of Farina Orthodontic Specialists, take the footage home and show your friends and family, they might think you’d had an appointment years in the future. The whole experience at the newest office of Farina Orthodontic Specialists (on Bruce B. Downs {BBD} Blvd. in Wesley Chapel) begins from the time you pull into the parking lot of the new, modern cubeshaped building. As you walk into the atrium, through the waiting area, 3D imaging center, consultation rooms and treatment rooms, the entire building has the feel of a futuristic utopia. Popular music is triggered by the front door opening, scented air is pushed through the air-conditioning system and you’ll be greeted by what Mark Farina, D.M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine) calls his, “Directors of First Impressions” — his amazing staff. “It’s a fun, family atmosphere here,” Dr. Farina says. “We’ve got staff that’s been with us for 20 years. This is the place to come if you’re looking for a family-centric practice with state-of-the-art technology and award-winning results.” Dr. Farina earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology from Boston College in Boston, MA. He earned his D.M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia

The office in Wesley Chapel that Farina Orthodontic Specialists built and moved into in March of 2018 puts Dr. Farina’s mantra of “Radical Transparency” to the ultimate and literal test. Just about every door in the office is glass. Most treatment rooms aren’t even enclosed. Dr. Farina’s idea of transparency allows for an openness that applies to every aspect of the experience, even down to the fee schedules. “From treatments to fees to procedures, we are transparent in everything we do,” he says. The transparency overlaps with the theme of treating patients like family. “From the moment we entered the office, everyone was friendly and helpful,” writes parent Melissa C. on FarinaSmiles. com. “Each visit after, we have been greeted with warm smiling faces and our kids are excited to go to the lobby waiting area and dive into the fun things waiting for them.” Melissa’s daughter had her braces done at Farina Orthodontic Specialists and she has been able to be involved every step of the way. “As a parent, I am happy to have a seat near my daughter when her braces and teeth are worked on,” she wrote. “I can ask questions of the technician and orthodontist during the appointment.” If a patient or patient’s family member has to wait, they can use one of the four iPads available in the tech center. Vanquish Summer Smells & Stickiness With Scrub-A-Dub Bin Cleaning big problem with bins that aren’t cleaned regularly,” Jennifer says.
By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN
When dumping your garbage into your trash bin, are you one of those people who open the lid quickly, flick the bag of trash into the bin, and let the lid slam shut as you turn away, hoping to avoid the waft of stink from years of trash bin neglect? If so, Wesley Chapel resident Jennifer Trudel can help you. A simple phone call can remove the stink — as well as bugs, dried liquids, sticky substances and other left-over trash residue — out of your bins. Scrub-A-Dub Bin Cleaning, started 18 months ago by Trudel, will come to your home and have your bins looking and smelling brand new. While a fresh trash bin may seem like an oxymoron to some, it actually makes perfect sense, Trudel says. “With the summer and the heat and people having to keep their trash bins in their garage, bacteria love the warmth and they love moisture and that’s basically what you have in Florida,” she says. “The heat helps bacteria grow, and a lot of people will get maggots, viruses, mold and bacteria they can’t see even see.” That may be why business has been booming for Trudel. One day last week, she was trying to figure out how she was going to get to all 40 homes on her schedule taken care of in one day. She is considering buying a second truck. And, she says, advertising in the Neighborhood News also has helped keep her busy. “It’s been crazy,” she says.
How Does It Work?
Scrub-A-Dub Bin Cleaning comes to your home as often as you desire — from just four times per year to monthly — to make sure the trash and recycling bins you drag back into your garage are immaculately clean and fresh-smelling. One of Jennifer’s first customers was Joshua Green, who lives in Seven Oaks. “Our trash cans were always in the garage and smelling,” Green says. “It’s gross and no one wants to deal with it.”

Environmentally Friendly, Too!
Jennifer Trudel says her unique service and fair prices are keeping her busy during the summer months, when your trash bins are at their stinkiest. (Photo: John C. Cotey)
He has been pleased with the results. “They’re nice and clean and look brand new,” says Green, who has been a customer ever since. Scrub-A-Dub customers leave their bins out on trash day, after the sanitation truck has picked up their trash and/or recycling. That’s when Jennifer comes by, opens the bin and uses a grabber to pull out any trash left behind, then loads the bins into her truck, and the “magic” begins. The bins are raised above the truck and centered around a head that spins and blasts 200-degree water. “Imagine a giant dishwasher for your bin,” she says. For an initial cleaning, Jennifer will scrub using a biodegradable degreaser to clean the inside of the bin — she says that sometimes she even has to climb inside the bin — and then runs it through the truck’s process again. She pressure-sprays the outside of the lid, wipes the handles and the inside and outside of the lid — anywhere your hands might touch. Then, she says the bin no longer has an odor, but she wants it to smell good, so she adds a deodorizer.
Then, she wipes out any excess water. “It’s overkill, but I do it because I’m a type-A person,” Jennifer laughs. “I want the bin to look beautiful, and every customer to be wowed.” Jennifer says that some people might say, “It’s a garbage can. It’s supposed to be dirty,” and she says she can understand that, even though she disagrees. “No one wants to deal with nasty garbage cans that smell, and maggots are a

Jennifer says that all of the cleaning products she uses — including the degreaser, disinfectant and deodorizer — are biodegradable. “Let’s say you use vinegar; that doesn’t kill bacteria,” she explains. “Bleach kills bacteria but it’s super toxic and bad for the lakes and ponds.” With Scrub-A-Dub, all of the water for cleaning comes from a 525-gallon tank inside the truck, which is filled with fresh water. And, it’s heated to a temperature much higher than anything you would use to clean your home. She says the dirty water that is rinsed out of the inside of your bins goes into the truck and is disposed of according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines.

The USF Federal Credit Union Celebrates 60 Years Of Helping! USF FCU, visit usffcu.com/eligibility.
By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN
The year 2019 already has been a year of celebration for the USF Federal Credit Union (USF FCU). It’s the organization’s 60th anniversary, marking six decades since it was founded in 1959 and its continued growth and service to its members ever since. The credit union’s growth is evidenced by the brand-new branch that now serves New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, located at the northwest corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and Imperial Oak Blvd., in the Trout Creek area in front of Winn-Dixie, just south of County Line Rd. The New Tampa branch opened last fall, celebrating its Grand Opening on November 15. When it opened, it was the USF FCU’s first stand-alone, off-campus branch. In the next 18 months or so, the credit union will open two more branches modeled after the one in New Tampa – one on E. Fletcher Ave. in Tampa and one in Sarasota. The credit union’s growth also is evidenced by its ever-expanding membership. When it was founded in 1959, the USF FCU started with 16 members — all of whom were members of the academic faculty or staff at the University of South Florida — and had total assets of $505. “Now, we have more than 60,000 members and $680 million in assets,” says Bill Steiger, brand and promotions manager for USF FCU. While USF FCU originally served only
Typical? Hardly!
The USF FCU offers typical personal banking services — from checking and savings accounts, to money market accounts and CDs (certificates of deposit), auto loans, home loans, personal loans and more. But, Steiger says, those services are not offered in a typical way. “We are member-focused,” he explains. “Our members are our number one priority, and providing service to them is job one.” Myresha Daniel is one of those members who says she appreciates the difference. Myresha says she opened her first account at USF FCU when she was a college student more than 20 years ago. She says she uses the credit union for all of her banking needs, including checking and savings accounts, CDs, a car loan, credit card, and previously had a personal loan that she paid off. “You hear about astronomical fees from the big banks,” she says, like her friends who have to keep a minimum balance of $500 and get charged a fee if they fall below that. “My account minimum is $5.” She says other perks include having a free consultation with a financial advisor who helped her better understand her 401(k), and a personalized car-buying program where she not only got the lowest rate out there, but also an assigned representative to meet her at the dealership and walk her through all the paperwork.

I’m going to admit something, as a man, that might shock some of the women in our audience: I have never really noticed a woman’s eyebrows unless they were somehow bizarre — like a unibrow, obviously painted on with a black magic marker, etc. However, I now have a few friends and advertisers who have made it their business to make sure that a woman’s eyebrows look beautiful, so I now have to agree with Pam Edmonson (far right in the photo above), the owner of Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam (see ad on pg. 31), who says, “Eyebrows are so important because they frame the entire face,” adding that even though she has the same state license as a tattoo artist, “Eyebrows truly are my passion and most women do notice when another woman has great eyebrows.” I’ll have to take her word for it, but Pam, who has had great success with her

No Pads? No Problem, As 7-On-7 Helps Prep Teams For Fall! defensive back Deion Sanders both coached teams in the event, which was crawling with analysts from recruiting websites. Some of the bigger events also receive cable television coverage.
By ANDY WARRENER
Traditionally, high school football players have generally filled their summers the only way they can — by throwing the ball around, studying the play book, keeping in shape and hitting the weight room. They aren’t allowed to wear pads in the offseason, so there is no hitting or tackling, and as a result, nothing to play. But, 7-on-7 football has changed all that. What began as a simple practice drill, ubiquitous from high school all the way up to the pro level, has evolved into a highly competitive sport of its own. These days, the 7-on-7 “season” is red hot, offering a full-speed, nocontact (really, no more than light contact) way for athletes to hone their skills, build team camaraderie and even attract college recruiters. Increased participation has led to increased organization, and what began as a few local/regional tournaments here and there has evolved into a high-stakes competition that goes all the way to the national level. Elite area 7-on-7 teams like Team Tampa compete in a national circuit of tournaments, and have a few national

The game of 7-on-7 football is exactly that — seven players against seven players. The offense is run by the quarterback, there’s usually a running back or two and then four or five receivers. On defense, 7-on-7 teams mixes usually mix in one or two linebackers and five or six defensive backs. Quarterbacks have four seconds to unload the ball or it’s whistled as a sack. The teams play on a short field. The offense starts at the 40-yard line and can gain first downs at the 25yard line and the 10-yard line. You either score, or you turn the ball over. There are no running plays. Games are 21 minutes long and the clock runs continuously until the final minute. A player is considered downed or tackled by a simple onehand touch, though it can get very physical during intense match-ups. The origins of the sport can be traced back to a drill called, “Pass

and together is a big payoff. If you’re are working in a new quarterback for your high school team, the summer circuit of 7-on-7 can be invaluable. “First, it allows you to practice with the football all year,” says Wesley Chapel High (WCH) head coach Tony Egan. “You develop chemistry between your quarterback and receivers and it helps you get your timing down.” Egan and the Wildcats are hoping junior Owen Libby steps into the starting quarterback position in the fall of 2019, and they are getting him all the reps they can. than when I played (in high school),” says former Tennessee Titans linebacker Ryan Fowler. “Back then, if you faced a good quarterback, you might not have answers for him unless you had a good pass rush. The NFL has become more of a passing league, and college has followed that, so it’s natural for high school to follow it, too. (7-on-7) offers you months to work on things that you just don’t have time to work on in the fall.” Coaches like Egan and WRH’s Mark Kantor have embraced the 7-on7 game, and, with both their teams starting the fall with new starting quarterbacks, building that chemistry on offense will be a significant bonus. But, they are quick to point out, it’s not “real” football and they often have to remind their players of that. “The quarterback gets used to taking free drop backs,” Egan says. “We try to do things in practice to simulate pressure like have guys put
their hands in the quarterback’s face or hit him with a blocking pad.” Playing 7-on-7 also gets defensive backs conditioned into a pass-first mentality, and provides a test for linebackers, who often have to drop into pass coverage as well. “It can take time to break that habit,” Fowler said. “I’ll sometimes make them (defenders) do up-downs after the ball is snapped to slow them down so that their drops are more accurate.” Egan makes his defenders take a forward run-step before he allows them to drop into coverage. Coaches have to be wary as well of not falling into a 7-on-7 trap of calling plays and running a defense completely different than they will in the fall. “We try to run the same coverages we would run in a real game,” Egan said. “It might hurt us in 7-on-7 but we want our kids to know our coverages in the fall.”

Becht’s Camp A Hit!
Current ESPN analyst and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Anthony Becht holds two football camps all year — one at his alma mater (Booner-Prendergast High in Drexel Hill, PA), and the other at Wiregrass Ranch High, where his son Rocco is a sophomore quarterback. Becht’s three-day camp was held June 10-12, and drew 120 kids from first to eighth grade. After the camp concluded, Becht presented a check for $15,000 to Bulls head coach Mark Kantor, which will be used to upgrade the high school team’s football equipment. — JCC

The Lagoon Review: Pricey, But Definitely Worth Checking Out! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com
Since opening its gates to the public, the Crystal Lagoons® amenity in the Epperson community has been a hot topic in and around Wesley Chapel. Depending upon who you listen to, it’s the world’s greatest amenity, or just a glorified community swimming pool; it’s a great day out with the family, or a money pit; it’s just like the beach, or a charmless knockoff. Nothing seems to fire up the locals more than lagoon talk. And, while we’re not here to settle the debate, after spending a day there with the wife, two teen-age boys and some friends, I can say this: While a little pricey, it’s definitely worth checking out. First off, the lagoon is not an amusement park. It isn’t Adventure Island, a comparison some derisively make. It isn’t a river, it isn’t a lake and it isn’t a beach. If you plan to look at the Crystal Lagoon through any of those prisms, you will be disappointed. Here, however, is what it is: a pretty cool and unique nearby getaway with sand, palm trees, crystal clean water and enough food, drink, music and activities to entertain your family for most of a full day. If you live in Epperson, congratulations. It is a fantastic amenity, and for $25 a month, I say it’s well worth it. It’s a slam dunk, really, unless you’re one of the residents unhappy that the public is taking up some of that beach space, but someone has to pay for the lagoon maintenance until many more of the
4,000 planned homes in Epperson are built and occupied. If you don’t live in Epperson, your perspective may differ (but remember, it wasn’t built for you). It is $25 per person to visit for a day, but only $5 if you go with a resident (so make some friends while you’re there!). The $25 gets you in the door and, if you get there early enough, a spot on the beach, as well as access to the swimming areas of the lagoon. We heard no complaints about the refreshingly chilly water — now that the summer weather is turning all of our smaller pools into oversized bath tubs — but we did hear a few requests for more, or larger, swimming areas. Parts of the lagoon are roped off for the water obstacle course known as Wibit, and to make room for paddleboarders and kayakers to make their way around the lagoon. The swimming areas did seem a bit small, but that probably all depends upon the size of the crowds the day you visit. The water is everything developers said it would be — clean, clear and refreshing. The beach area was filled with folks relaxing in chairs, enjoying a beverage and working
on their tans. Because the surrounding areas aren’t fully landscaped, the lagoon can feel a bit sterile, but there were a lot of happy faces and energy in the crowds. You may miss the expanse, the salty air and the waves lapping at your feet while walking in the cool sand along the shore of an actual beach, but otherwise, the lagoon does a pretty good impression. We did wish there was more shade, but personal umbrellas are not allowed. If you can’t find a seat with some respite from the sun, there are shaded areas — in what is called “premium seating” — a few steps away from the beach that will cost you $12 for two chairs and an umbrella, and $20 for four chairs and an umbrella. It’s a gorgeous area, and is a purchase we agreed will be well worth it on our next visit.
The a la carte pricing at the lagoon — yes, even for residents, although they get a discount — can make for an expensive day, and some will find it annoying. The slide will cost you $10 for the day, not a bad deal for those who plan on using it over and over. A rock wall, which wasn’t open the day we went, costs the same. And the Wibit, which was a huge hit with the teenage boys and everyone else who tried it, is available for $10 for a 45-minute session. You can buy all three together for $20, which will save you some money, but you might want to skip the rock wall and save your money for an extra session on the Wibit, pictured here (left). Kayaks and paddleboards are available to rent for $10 an hour. Those who are serious about each might want to skip both — there’s none of the waves, scenery or wildlife that makes saltwater or whitewater kayaking and paddleboarding fun — but it’s great for those who don’t often get the chance and the always-calm waters make it ideal for first-timers. For example, we have friends who will spend seven hours on Crystal River paddleboarding, and we told them the lagoon might not be for them. But another friend, who is convinced alligators, sharks and snakes will devour her and her family if she joins us on a river one weekend, went to the lagoon a week later on our recommendation and rented a paddleboard and kayak and absolutely loved it, with plans to return every chance they get this summer. The lagoon does not allow outside food, See “Lagoon Review” on page 32.

‘Lagoon Review’
Continued from page 31 although you can bring your own water. We brought a large thermos, but were shocked to see bottles of water on sale for only $1. There also were $5 mimosa and bloody Mary specials, beers were between $4-$6 and food items like hot dogs ($3) and nachos ($4) also were very reasonably priced. Tampa Sammich, one of the popular food trucks that rotate in and out at the lagoon, was selling Cuban sandwiches — and they were quite tasty — and other grilled sandwiches for $9, grilled cheese and chicken wraps for $6, and canned and bottled sodas for only $2.

Perhaps we have been scarred by the ridiculous prices at concession stands at sporting events — raise your hand if you’ve ever bought a $15 beer — but we found the food and drinks at the lagoon to be a bargain, and certainly much cheaper than we anticipated. The lagoon also has a stage for live bands and DJs, although nothing was playing the day we attended, and a shaded, sunken bar that also offers not only reasonably priced drinks but also great respite from the heat. One minor nit: the artificial green grass
in parts of the lagoon gets amazingly hot, so watch your step. We learned our lesson when starting a game of cornhole. So, is the lagoon pricey? A little. A family of four that decides to partake in all or most of

the activities, and then grab lunch, will spend at least $200. That’s an expensive day trip. But, bypassing the 45-minute drive to one of our Bay-area beaches, missing the traffic and parking hunt and not having to lug your chair and cooler across the sand might make it a more convenient option at times. The lagoon may never replace the beach, or a river or lake, or Adventure Island, but it’s not trying for that anyway. It is what it has been advertised as — a first-of-its-kind-in-the-U.S. amenity designed to sell thousands of homes and keep those local residents entertained. Is it worth a visit? You bet, if just to say you’ve been to the lagoon. We have. And, as everyone in our group agreed — we’ll be back.

No Tears Shed As The Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary Celebrates 2018-19! By Gary Nage
Most photos by David Alvarez
“I’m sure you’ve noticed how much ink I give the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Noon in these pages and you might assume that it’s because my wife Jannah is a longtime member of that club. But, you’d only be partly right. The main reason you see so much about the larger of the two Rotary Clubs that meet in Wesley Chapel is simply because a) the club does so much, both here in our area and internationally and b) many of my favorite people who live and work in Wesley Chapel are active, involved members of this outstanding club. I therefore was honored to attend the club’s annual awards banquet and installation of
new officers on June 8, at the outstanding Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel, located off S.R. 56. The food was outstanding, but the atmosphere and camaraderie were even more impressive. The club’s immediate past president, Kent Ross, emceed the event, and 2018-19 president Eric Johnson (who also presided over mine and Jannah’s wedding in March) was primarily responsible for recapping his unplanned year at the helm. Eric, who also was a past president of the club, stepped in when the person originally selected as president had to bow. Yes, Eric and other club members made their annual pilgrimage to Trojes, Honduras, to install water purification systems in homes in this mountainous, impoverished area. And
yes, the club hosted a successful fourth annual Duck Fest and co-hosted a second annual Hats & Horses Kentucky Derby Party a month or so later. There were too many highlights for me to fit into this space, but rest assured that this is one of the youngest, most vibrant Rotary Clubs around and yes, the club members know how to have a lot of fun together while embodying the Rotary International (the world’s largest service organization with more than 1.3 million members worldwide) motto of “Service Above Self.” Eric gave out a number of service awards to club members at the banquet (Jannah took home one for her work as the club’s social chair) and named club member David Alvarez as his very deserving “Rotarian of the Year.” Not only has David been involved in virtually every pro-
ject the club has, he’s also the club’s “official” photographer and videographer. In fact, David’s video about the club won top honors among all of the videos submitted by the member clubs in Rotary District 6950 at a recent District event. One of the highlights on June 8 was the award given to Jay Rosario, the now-former (as reported last issue) owner of Wesley Chapel Nissan, who allowed his dealership to serve as the location for many of the club’s major events over the year. Jay, who is now an honorary member of the club, was gifted with a Paul Harris Fellow award usually reserved for club members who donate $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation (the organization that has now nearly eradicated polio from the world). Jay’s right-hand man at the dealership, club member Troy Stevenson, joined him on

stage when Jay received the award. But, the surprise highlight of the evening was when Eric handed over the president’s gavel to 2019-20 club president Chris Casella. Not only did Chris make every significant other of a club member (including yours truly) an honorary member of the club, he gave Eric one of the most spot-on, meaningful parting gifts I’ve ever seen — a box of tissues — because Eric is known for getting emotional when he talks about Rotary, especially when he talks about the Honduran children he and the club members have helped over the years. The box said “In Case of Rotary Moments,” and “Presented to Eric Johnson for your blood, sweat and especially tears you shed during your year as President. We are forever grateful.” A perfect parting gift, to be sure. And of course, the Strictly Business Band — club members Arlene Brooks, Patrick Murtha, Rick Soriano and Kent — rocked the house as the festivities wound down. BayScape Bistro At Heritage Isles — Best-Kept Secret No More! By Gary Nager
The husband-and-wife team of Eddie and Lourdes Bujarski has helped hundreds of young people learn how to safely prepare and cook food from all over the world during their 18 years of running the Culinary Arts Program at New Tampa’s Wharton High. That era ended at Wharton in December of 2017, after the Bujarskis took over the newly revamped restaurant at the Heritage Isles Golf Club the month before. When Eddie told me that during my most recent visit to their BayScape Bistro, I wondered why they continued to work at Wharton even though they had already taken the reins at the open-tothe-public eatery inside Heritage Isles. “Well, when you’re a teacher,” Eddie told me, “you definitely feel obligated to finish out the semester. We couldn’t just leave those kids like that.” That kind of commitment to their students is the same dedication the Bujarskis have brought not only to BayScape Bistro, but also to the local community — especially the residents of Heritage Isles. “We found that the residents weren’t really eating at the restaurant unless they were golfers,” Eddie says. “Lourdes and I decided that we would have to change that to be successful here.” And, change that they have. Although BayScape Bistro has a simple and not overly diverse menu, the menu items are all made with the same commitment to quality the Bujarskis tried to instill in their culinary students, many of whom have gone on to post-secondary cooking schools, like the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and Johnson & Wales University, and on to professional culinary careers. In addition, at least 20 of those former students have worked at BayScape Bistro and several of them have told me how much they appreciate the Bujarskis’ no-nonsense approach to the restaurant business. “They really know what they’re doing,” says Tristan, a former Wharton culinary student now working on his four-year culinary degree at Johnson & Wales while he hones his craft at BayScape Bistro. Tristan (top right photo on this page) was the amazing young chef creating unique, made-to-order pasta dishes during BayScape’s recent Thursday night all-you-can-eat (for only $10 per person; $5 for kids under age 10!) sauté station, one of the restaurant’s newer “Daily Signatures” (see below for more on those). I can assure you that the smell of fresh
Still smoker friendly!
garlic being heated in oil is enough to get you to try the pasta station, which gives you options like tender, grilled chicken, mojo pork, bacon, fresh spinach, tomatoes and much more, with your choice of pastas and a hearty marinara or creamy Alfredo sauce — or try it “Gary’s Way” (registered trademark pending), with just the garlic and oil. According to BayScape’s online menu, Monday is “Sauté Night,” but Eddie says it has been so popular that the night Jannah and I were there (Thursday is also Trivia Night at BayScape) was the “tryout” for Thursday. Tuesday is “Take-Out Tuesday,” where Eddie, Lourdes and their staff create different-each-week to-go packages which feed a family of four — for only $20! I unfortunately missed the recent fried chicken Takeout Tuesday, but Eddie promised me there will be more. The center photo on the next page shows a recent grilled chicken (with all the fixins) Takeout Tuesday sample. Wednesday is Ladies NIght (with $1 glasses of wine for the ladies), but it also is “Wings Wednesday,” where anyone can get six Buffalo or mojo wings for only $5. On Fiesta Friday, which was mine and Jannah’s first experience with Eddie’s loyal crowd of super-fun regulars who come for dinner and stay for karaoke, you can enjoy tacos, fajitas and other Mexican favorites. It was our Fiesta Friday visit that convinced us
to have both my birthday party in January and my “Gary’s 25 Years of Neighborhood News” celebration in April at BayScape, and I heard no complaints about the catering-style food (top right pic on next page) at either of those events. Saturday is “Live Music Night,” with a rotating lineup of artists and groups performing. Eddie says it’s also the night where he usually serves a steak (bottom left photo on next page) or, occasionally, a fresh fish feature entrée, although he admits he hasn’t yet found a supplier with the kind of fresh fish he wants at the right price. Sunday is “Family Night,” where one kid eats for free for each adult entrée purchased. The kids also are kept entertained with indoor games. Jannah and I also have other favorites at BayScape Bistro, from the BayScape chef salad (with mojo pork, chicken and bacon and what Jannah says is the best ranch dressing around); the French dip sandwich (top left photo on next page), with real au jus for dipping; the same tender roast beef also is available as a dinner plate with brown gravy; the grilled chicken club sandwich and the BayScape Cuban. There’s even a grilled veggie and cheese sandwich on the menu.
Breakfast, Too?
You probably couldn’t help but notice that the featured pic at the top of this page isn’t any of the items I’ve already mentioned. What it does happen to be is a pic of the best breakfast I’ve had in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel. The thick-cut brioche French toast with two eggs perfectly over easy and the tastiest thick-cut bacon around shown above, with truly amazing cottage-fried potatoes and super- fresh (and delicious) fruit, costs only $9.99. If you don’t need the French toast, the cost is only $7.99 with regular toast!

And, best of all, breakfast is served all day, so you can even have it for dinner if you have such a craving. Other breakfast dishes to try are the meat-lover’s hash, country fried chicken & eggs with pepper gravy, the “breakfast in hand” sandwich, pancake breakfast, create-your-own omelets and even a yogurt parfait with fresh fruit and house-made granola.
Still More To Come!
Eddie and Lourdes promise that more items will be added to BayScape Bistro’s unique menu, based on customer demand, and boy, considering the place hasn’t yet been open for two years, there are a lot of regular customers enjoying the restaurant and bar, which has some of the most reasonable premium alcohol mixed drink prices around. Friday karaoke nights are always packed
and most of the main portion of the restaurant was full for Trivia Thursday. And, with Takeout Tuesdays averaging at least 50 family-of-four meals every week, it’s obvious that Eddie and Lourdes are building something special in New Tampa, even though Heritage Isles is almost at the Morris Bridge Rd. eastern end of Cross Creek Blvd. And, keep reading the Neighborhood News for more info about a family-oriented Back-to-School Business Expo, in conjunction with the North Tampa Bay Chamber, coming sometime in August! There will be food, games for the kids and booths available for kid-oriented business sponsors. Nibbles & Business The Latest & Greatest News In Dining, Shopping & Business In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel!
Full Circle Pizza Gets New Owners!
It’s always difficult to know how things will go for a popular local mom & pop restaurant once the original owner sells the business. However, in the case of Full Circle Chicago Pizza, located in the Pebble Creek Collection on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa, it seems that new owners Julia and Freddy Nova are off to a great start. Freddy, who previously worked as a sous chef at the historic Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ, and Julia continue to serve authentic Chicago-style deep-dish and thincrust pizzas (and they now serve deep-dish pizza every day) only a mile or so south of the county line, but they also have expanded Full Circle’s already impressive menu. My favorite dishes so far are the chicken

& broccoli with garlic & oil shown above left (with garlic knots) and the Chicago Italian beef sandwich with melted mozzarella. I’ve also heard raves about the jumbo wings and the Italian sausage parmigiana sandwiches. Full Circle Chicago Pizza (19651 BBD Blvd., Unit B-2) is now open every day for lunch and dinner. For more info, call (813) 994-3700, visit FullCircleChicagoPizza.com or see the ad below.
Why You Should Be A Samantha Taylor Fitness Sister!
As we’ve chronicled in these pages several times, Samantha Taylor Fitness (STF) now has five Tampa Bay-area locations — including one at 26908 Ridgebrook Dr, Suite 101, off S.R. 56, in Wesley Chapel.
Since all five locations (see ad on pg. 16) are for women only, it can be tough for a man to understand why so many women love and appreciate Samantha and her amazing staff. I understand it a little more clearly now, because I joined my wife Jannah (who trains at the Wesley Chapel STF studio) for Samantha’s most recent celebration for her six-week challenge participants. Held at the Hilton Garden Inn near the Suncoast Pkwy. (off S.R. 54), Jannah and I were among 220 people in attendance, including many husbands/ significant others of the participants, and Samantha said she had a waiting list because she had to close off attendance at that number. Challenge participants from all five studios were on hand (having lost about 1,500 pounds between them in only six weeks!).

They and their significant others/family members enjoyed a special Keto die-friendly dinner, but there was electricity in the air as Samantha and her sorority of women who work out together in classes (many also do one-on-one personal training), as well as her compassionate staffers, received a variety of honors. Which women won which prizes (there were some great ones) wasn’t particularly important to me, but if you’re a woman who wants to get in better shape, feel and look better, in the company of others who share your goals, I now know that you can’t beat Samantha Taylor Fitness. that Primebar in the Shops at Wiregrass mall had closed (the always-changing menu was never great and the drinks were the priciest in our area), but I was a little stunned that Union 72 BBQ (right photo on previous page), next to and owned by members of the same group that also owns The Brass Tap, closed the same week. I had not heard back from the restaurant’s management about Union 72 at our press time, but I hope to have more info by our next issue. • Speaking of the mall, our friend Wendy O’Neill recently moved her Creativity Unpinned store (photo above) from the former Gymboree location to the former Crazy 8 location.
