My Take On Masks Now

OK, I’ll admit it, I absolutely hate wearing a face mask out in public. But, unlike apparently too many people, I have been wearing masks in public places since just after St. Patrick’s Day. When I first started wearing them, Jannah and I couldn’t find disposable masks for sale anywhere, but we did find some nice homemade cloth masks being sold on the Wesley Chapel Community Neighborhood News

Tough Choices — Three Families, Three Choices Continued from page 1

The Willis family (l.-r.: Ethan, Chloe Alicia & Will) Kelly McDowell, with daughters Avery (left) and chose the “mySchool” hybrid option for their family for the Audrey (right), has chosen the traditional brick-and2020-21 school year. (Photos: Charmaine George) mortar school option for the 2020-21 school year.

When it came to deciding what to do for the 2020-21 school year, Samantha Billingham (left, with daughter Alanah and son Travis), chose online options.

Alicia Willis mySchool

Samantha Billingham Pasco eSchool

Alicia Willis considers herself an optimist when it comes to Covid-19. She’d like to think the virus will die out or become more manageable before schools re-open in August, or that a vaccine will be found. But until then, she’s not quite ready to send either of her kids, a rising first grader and a rising fifth grader, back to Sand Pine Elementary. Instead, she chose the mySchool option for her children, which will allow them to attend school remotely and still follow the standard school schedule and bell times. Alicia also strongly considered Pasco eSchool, where students work on their own schedules with different teachers than they ones they had in traditional school. “Going back to brick and mortar was eliminated (for us) immediately,” she said. “I do think they did a great job with the choices.” Unlike Pasco eSchool. Alicia’s kids still will be learning along with their usual classmates and teachers. “It was important to me that they get to have the teachers they are familiar with,” she said, adding that she thinks mySchool will make the transition back to regular school, should it come in January, much easier. Alicia says her kids adapted well to online schooling this spring, and she didn’t mind doing the teaching. But, she also says that her kids asked often about their friends and teachers at school. Even before the three choices for the fall were put forward by Pasco County Schools, Alicia had decided her kids would be staying home this fall. And, she said, the rising number of positive Covid-19 cases in late June, just before the July 1 deadline, made her more confident in her decision. “I believe it will make some parents think twice and possibly reevaluate their decisions,” Alicia said. “Parents going back to work may not have another choice. I’m blessed to have the choice that I have.” 4

Kelly McDowell Traditional School

Kelly McDowell started online learning at her house at 8 a.m. every day. She says her third and fifth graders were expected to be up and ready to work. It took only a few hours each day for them to complete their assignments. Sometimes, they would work a little extra so they could have Friday off. An accountant who is happy she is fortunate enough to have a flexible schedule, Kelly enjoyed her extra time with her kids. But, Kelly said it could never replicate the benefits of a classroom at a brick-and-mortar school. When it came to making her choice, Kelly chose a traditional setting for her children, and plans to send them back to New River Elementary in August. “I really feel the social aspect, and face-to-face interaction, is really valuable for them,” Kelly said. “They need structure if school is going to be beneficial (for them).” Kelly says her job is flexible enough that she could continue to work at home. So, she did seriously consider the online options, and while she says that mySchool may not be feasible for her family, Pasco eSchool (see next column) “might still be in the back of my mind,” due to its more structured format. But, Kelly’s kids like their mom’s choice. It was what they wanted. “The kids were very, ‘I wanna go back to school,’” Kelly says. “I told them they would have to wear masks, be extra vigilant and worry not about just themselves, but others, too. They were very adamant about going back.” With the potential for school openings still more than a month away, and Covid-19 unfortunately dominating the recent news headlines in the Sunshine State, Kelly says she reserves the right to change her mind. “If Florida becomes the new New York,” she says, “then that decision is going to change.”

Samantha Billingham didn’t have just one decision to make, she had two. Her son, 11-year-old Travis, enjoyed his online learning experience last spring when he could no longer attend Union Park Academy. Her daughter, 15-year-old Alanah, not so much. As a high schooler at Wesley Chapel High (WCH), Alanah was eager to get back to school to be with her friends. Initially, Samantha thought she would keep Travis home, and let her daughter return to traditional school. But, the news on Covid-19 just got worse. “As time went on and we not only had a rise in cases but also a tragic loss of a boy that went to the same school as (Alanah), we decided it was best to postpone the traditional school setting,” Samantha said. “My kids going to school, being in a building with thousands of people five days a week just doesn’t make me feel comfortable.” That was “heartbreaking” for Alanah, who will do mySchool this fall, with the hopes of returning to the WCH campus in January. But, Travis will do Pasco eSchool, and Samantha said he already has decided he wants to do that for the whole school year. “We chose FLVS (Florida Virtual School) because we wanted a wider range of options,” Samantha said. “It is all winging it at this point, and we will adjust as needed.” Samantha is able to work from home, so it made sense for the kids to learn at home. She is confident her children can still have normal social lives via technology and with friends in the neighborhood. “This virus is not going to just disappear,” Samantha said. “It will be around for a long time and until we have trusted environments, like enforced social distancing and regular sanitizing, or a medical solution, then I feel very confident it will remain an issue.”

Wesley Chapel’s Rags(dale) To Riches Story! By ERIC VICIAN Carson Ragsdale always has been the big kid on the block. His block in Meadow Pointe, to be exact. Before growing into his current 6-foot-8-inch, 225-pound frame, Ragsdale was collecting trophies playing Pony League baseball in Temple Terrace and making an appearance in the 2009 Mustang World Series for the Tampa Titans. The whole time, Ragsdale was, naturally, thinking big. “Ever since I was a little kid playing T-ball, I said to my dad that my dream was to be a professional baseball player,” he says. His dream came true on June 11, when the Philadelphia Phillies used a fourth-round pick and selected him 116th overall in the 2020 MLB draft. According to MLB.com, Ragsdale signed his first professional contract for $225,000. The big day is kind of a big deal when you consider the journey the 22-year-old Ragsdale has taken took to get from Pasco to Philly.

Meadow Pointe resident Carson Ragsdale was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth round of the recent Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies after striking out 77 batters in only 50.1 innings in his USF career. (Photo courtesy of USF Athletics)

A four-year letter winner for head coach Jeff Swymer at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High in Spring Hill, Ragsdale chose to play his college baseball a mere 12 miles from his Wesley Chapel roots at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He says he wanted to be a Bull, in part, because he attended many

summer camps there, and it didn’t hurt that his parents, Scott and Tiffany, also attended USF. “It just felt like home to me, growing up a Florida kid,” says Ragsdale, who says he never watched a Phillies game until they played the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2008 World Series. At USF, it took him more than three seasons to find his way to where he wants to be in Philadelphia — standing tall atop the mound as a starting pitcher. He went 9-0 as a reliever as a freshman, then became part of the program’s first combined no-hitter as a sophomore while also seeing time at DH and first base.

However, Ragsdale’s promising future was put on pause by an elbow injury. In 2019, he missed the USF season due to Tommy John surgery. Rather than let his big aspirations come crashing down, however, Ragsdale used his recovery as a positive influence by taking the game of baseball back to his childhood mentality. “I took one day to feel sorry for myself and be down, then I got back on the horse,” he says. “I think Tommy John (the surgery, not the pitcher) really played a part in my success because I came back and started having fun and competing after I had the game stripped from me.” Just when Ragsdale thought his final collegiate season this past spring was taking off, with four solid starts under his belt, everything came to a screeching Covid-19 halt. He did, however, make a very lasting, big impression in his final 2020 appearance as a Bull.

Neighborhood News

Facing the No.1-ranked University of Florida Gators in Gainesville, Ragsdale struck out a career-high 10 batters for the second time — and it just happened to happen with Phillies amateur scouting director Brian Barber in attendance. Barber later described the performance as “dominating,” and even more impressive because it came against one of the top college baseball programs in the country. The right-hander, whose strikeouts come in part due to a fastball that consistently hits 90-96 mph, led USF’s starting rotation with a 2.84 ERA, and was leading the Bulls’ entire pitching staff with 37 strikeouts before the shutdown. He also was second in the American Athletic Conference in strikeouts and batters struck out looking (11). “I want to be a starter,” Ragsdale says. “I definitely felt really comfortable on the mound this year. I was just kind of getting my feet wet in the starting role, understanding how to pitch as a starter and, if the season went on, I think I would have really taken off. I see myself as a Big League starter.” The spring 2020 graduate finished his USF career with 77 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.75 in only 50.1 innings of work. In 2017, Ragsdale helped USF’s staff lead the nation with 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings and set a school strikeout team record with 620. “I couldn’t be happier for Carson,” says USF head coach Billy Mohl, who has seen 19 Bulls players drafted by MLB teams since 2015. “He is the definition of what a student-athlete should aspire to be. Most importantly, Carson is a high-character individual who makes everyone around him better.” With the Phillies recently closing their Clearwater spring training camp after five players and three staffers tested positive for Covid-19, Ragsdale says his next step is to take part in a virtual mini-camp orientation with draftees and free agents via Zoom. Until he is told otherwise, he will continue throwing bullpen sessions and working out on his own. It’s that kind of hard work, Ragsdale says, has helped him be successful, attributes his success to, and he wants that message to reach other youth baseball players in the Wesley Chapel and New Tampa areas. He said if you have big dreams to make it to the big time one day, think back to when you were little. “Play baseball like a kid with that mindset of having fun and competing,” he says. “Have fun and enjoy the game. That will carry you for a long time.” @NTWCNews

Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus Still Set To Open Next Month! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com In June, more than 300 teams from around the country competed in youth baseball and softball tournaments at Champions Park in Newberry, FL, a baseball/softball complex which features 16 fields on 40 acres, with plenty of room for social distancing. Parents were seated beyond the outfield fences, many watching from beneath 10’ x 10’ tents. Dugouts were sprayed with disinfectant, and precautions were taken against the spread of the Covid-19 virus, which had shut all sports down from March to May. So, when you ask Richard Blalock — the CEO and founder of RADD Sports, which is managing the nearly complete Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County — if youth sports tourism (see story on next page) is ready to bounce back in Wesley Chapel, he is predictably bullish. “The youth sports travel industry is the most resilient tourism industry out there,” says Blalock, a 40-year veteran of the business and the former parks director for the City of Newberry. RADD Sports also manages Champions Park. “In 2008 (when the last recession hit), Mickey Mouse was down 38 percent,” he says, “but youth sports was only down three percent. When it comes to parents’ discretionary spending, they most often choose sports.” Based on the first few months for the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County, parents and athletes definitely are eager to get back at it. The first event Blalock has scheduled for the new, 98,000 sq.-ft. indoor facility is only six weeks away — on Sunday, August 23 — a Blue Star Basketball event that will feature some of the best girls basketball players in the country. The following week will be the NIKE 8

Volleyball championships, which will have more than 60 teams in different age groups, and the week after, a 40-team high school volleyball tournament is scheduled. The campus also is pretty much booked for September, and also already has multiple events planned in October and November as well. Blalock says his staff is working closely with Pasco County officials on local programming protocols for the weekdays, and hopes to launch a wide variety of recreational and competitive local basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and soccer programs in September. While recent spikes in positive cases of Covid-19 — including amongst the younger demographics — were again rattling many in Florida as June drew to a close, Blalock is confident youth and adult sports can return safely. “We’re all just trying to do what we have to do to keep everyone safe, so we can keep allowing the kids to play,” he says, adding that the campus likely will have to limit spectators — where, for example, mom can only come watch her kid play in the morning, while dad gets the afternoon shift. Covid-19 presents a complex set of unique challenges, and Blalock says the sports tourism industry is undergoing

a massive shift to meet those challenges head on. “We have to bob and weave a little bit to figure this out,” he says. Whatever that transformation will be, it will not only require providing a safe environment, but it will have to assuage parental fears about the dangers of Covid-19 transmission. He says the entire industry is communicating about best practices and sharing ideas, and those have been passed on to his staff during their training for the opening of the new facility.

Sports Coast Hoping For Tourism Reboot By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com To use a sports metaphor, you might say that the Florida Sports Coast, from the moment it was created as Pasco County’s new tourism “brand” in 2018, jumped out to a huge lead, outscored the opponent, boasted a deep bench and an impressive farm system and was on top of the world. Then, it was as though every single player got injured. That pretty much describes Pasco County’s tourism in the era of Covid-19. But, players heal from injuries and so, too, is the Florida Sports Coast ready to get back on the field. Despite rising numbers of positive cases of the virus in June, Pasco County tourism director Adam Thomas has been eyeing July as a launching point for a major comeback. “July will be big,” Thomas says. The Tohrs Roller Hockey National Championships, currently being held through July 11 at AdventHealth Center Ice, accounted for 1,800 hotel room nights in 2019, although those numbers are expected to be down in the current Covid-19 environment. However, according to the event’s schedule posted online, roughly 130 teams are still competing this year. On the leisure tourism side, scalloping season (July 17-26) is one of the county’s more popular events. Thomas says more than 300,000 people took part or were impacted by the bay scallop season last year. “People look forward to that,” he says. “It’s a seasonal activity. And, you can practice social distancing in the water. It’s a fun, family activity…like a great underwater Easter egg hunt.” This will be the third season for scalloping in the county. In 2018, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) finally granted Pasco County an annual scallop season following a 25-year hiatus. Participants can collect up to two gallons of the bay scallops per day. There are a number of areas on the west coast of the county from which to collect them, from Anclote Village Marina to Hudson Beach Marina, as well as a number of local fishing guides who will be happy to help you catch your limit. Thomas is hoping both events can begin the reboot of what was expected to be a record-setting year for tourism in Pasco. In late March, hotel occupancy Neighborhood News

dropped to 18-20 percent, and is only now back up to around 44 percent. In April of 2019, the county pulled in $430,000 worth of tourist tax revenue, compared to just $93,000 this past April, which is typically Pasco’s biggest tourism month. The county and private facilities like AdventHealth Center Ice, had to cancel a number of events that typically fill local hotel rooms, like the 2020 Adult Men’s and Women’s National Ice Hockey Championships on back-to-back weekends in April. “It impacted our revenue stream greatly,” Thomas says. The county was projected to pull in $3.2 million in tourist tax dollars in 2020, which Thomas says would have been the largest total ever. And, Pasco’s tourism was on pace to hit a number of historical marks. “In a matter of three months, we went back three-and-a-half years,” says Thomas, who adds that a full recovery could take 20-24 months. There was some good news — while many events were outright canceled, 13 events have been rescheduled or postponed to a later date. The county has launched a Get Back To Adventure recovery marketing plan, hoping it encourages people to visit and leave their homes. “We’re now seeing additional booking that is going to increase our economic impact and demand for visitor and consumers alike to come and enjoy what our destination has to offer,” he says. Sarah Vande Berg Tennis Center In Zephyrhills Nears Completion! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Pascal Collard has been pitching an exciting vision for the Sarah Vande Berg (SVB) Tennis Center just outside of Wesley Chapel in Zephyrhills for some time, but on June 27, he was able to show some people how that vision is shaping up. Collard and his staff hosted a VIP event, complete with beer, wine and hors d’oeuvres, to announce that Advent Health has come aboard as a major sponsor and to show off the new center, which he says should open in August. While none of the rooms are filled just yet and the tennis, pickleball and padel courts haven’t yet been surfaced, Collard filled in the empty spots with his excitement. And, with Covid-19 cases in Florida rising sharply in recent weeks, Collard promised one thing — it will be safe. “I hate to say ‘most sanitized place in America,’ but that’s what we’re shooting for,” Collard said, adding that the center bought 1,000 face masks and put the staff through hours of classes and presentations to keep the facility virus-free. The indoor portion of the facility will have plenty of space and feature an indoor restaurant focusing in healthy foods — think air-fried fries and bento

The all-around focus of the facility is on health, from exercise and playing tennis to recovery to refueling the body. Collard also helped create a school — United Global Academy — offering an accredited curriculum for athletes training in tennis, golf, soccer and one of Collard’s

own personal passions — skydiving. And of course, there will be plenty of racquet sports. The SVB Tennis Center will have four padel courts, eight pickleball courts, two hard tennis courts with U.S. Open surfaces, and eight Har-Tru tennis courts with underground irrigation. Collard says there also will be a grass court: “It’s like a little garden.” There will be a viewing court with seating up to 1,000, and able to expand for bigger tournaments to more than 3,500. The 30,000-sq.-ft. indoor facility

Pasco EDC To Open Business Incubator In The Grove! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Bill Cronin says that when some people first hear the word “incubator,” they usually think of young chicks being hatched and raised in a confined environment. That’s not exactly what the new incubator coming to The Grove in the fall is, however. “The funny thing is, it’s not too far off from the truth,” jokes Cronin, who is the CEO of the Pasco County Economic Development Council (EDC). Instead of eggs and chicks, though, the SMARTstart Entrepreneur Center and Business Incubator, operated by the Pasco EDC through its SMARTstart Small Business Program, hopes to take business start-up ideas and nurture them into successful enterprises that grow into companies that will stay in Pasco County and bring investment and jobs to the community. SMARTstart is funded by the Penny for Pasco program. The Wesley Chapel location will be the third incubator in Pasco County, joining locations in New Port Richey, which focuses on professional services, and one in Dade City that is focused on food innovation. “They are all looking to build healthy businesses,” Cronin says. “Our goal is to help them become scalable, healthy and strong companies, and that they grow from there.” The Dade City location, which opened in February, was previously located downtown, but Cronin said so many companies were graduating and then moving back to Wesley Chapel and Cronin says, “it was very clear we needed something in the Wesley Chapel area because that’s the area the demand was coming from.” So, the Dade City incubator partnered with the University of Florida Institute of Food & Agricultural Sci-

ences Extension and is now an incubator kitchen, and Wesley Chapel is getting its own Business Incubator. “We are extremely excited to be able to offer our area’s entrepreneurs a place within striking distance to all that our county and region has to offer,” says Dan Mitchell, the EDC’s SMARTstart program director. “This third center will continue to allow our start-ups to have a countywide presence with just one membership. At the same time, this doubles the capacity of our impact in Pasco.” Located directly above the current office of Mark Gold, the developer of The Grove, and his Mishorim Gold Properties, the 5,000-sq.-ft. space will offer a plethora of tools for budding entrepreneurs. The incubator will have 10 private offices, 32 desks, a co-working lounge, huddle rooms, an executive board room, classrooms, meeting spaces and a digital media studio, for things like podcasts. Office rental space will be provided, as well as classes on financing, marketing and legal issues businesses may encounter. Sometimes, it’s a fresh idea that needs a helpful nudge, or it can be an

already established business that is stuck and looking to get to the next level. The Pasco EDC also offers micro loans (between $30,000-50,000 are the most common amounts), and being in the incubator offers opportunities for networking and the exchange of ideas and strategies. The SMARTstart Small Business Program also will operate a space for food entrepreneurs out of one of the

re-imagined shipping crates that are part of the innovative KRATE by Gold Box project that Gold is building in his effort to revive The Grove. Because small businesses have a large fail rate within the first two years, Cronin says the idea behind the incubator is to give businesses the tools they may otherwise lack. Cronin says it is like taking an idea and adding the entrepreneurial approach to it. “Inventors are good at inventing things,” Cronin says, “but sometimes not as good at getting those inventions to market.” While many businesses are struggling during the current Covid-19 pandemic, and opening something new may seem ill-timed, Cronin says times of economic turmoil are perfect for a business incubator program. “This is when you see a big increase in start-up activity,” he says. “This incubator offers them a great opportunity.” For already-established businesses, the EDC has helped the county provide numerous grants of up to $5,000 per business during the Covid-19 crisis. Much-Anticipated Craft Brewery Openings To Be Delayed? By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Wesley Chapel may not be the craft brewing capital of Florida just yet, but opening two breweries in the span of six weeks ain’t too shabby. Florida Avenue Brewing Co., located off S.R 56, and Double Branch Artisanal Ales (DBAA) — located at The Village at The Grove north of S.R. 54. — were both hoping to be open by the end of July DBAA would have opened already if not for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ announcement on June 26 that bars that don’t serve food could not serve alcohol because of a record week of new positive Covid-19 cases, especially among younger adult bar patrons. Originally, DBAA was set for a July 1 soft opening before the Governor’s announcement. “We’re back in a holding pattern,” says co-owner Ryan Clarke, who adjusted by selling their craft beers to go while they waited for DeSantis to open things back up. Both breweries had to overcome a number of significant obstacles, like issues with permitting, as well as the wide-ranging effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, to get to this point. Anthony Derby, the CEO of Florida Avenue Brewing as well as the founder of the popular Brew Bus Brewing in Semi-

There also is a 7,000-sq.-ft. outside recreation space along, with a beer garden and games like corn hole. The area will be fenced in, allowing patrons to bring their dogs, if they like. A full-service restaurant inside will have 200 seats — but only 50 percent will be available — as well as a full bar. There also will be a retail area and large beer cave for those wanting to pick up some beer to go or buy some merchandise. With 15,000 square feet of space dedicated to brewing roughly 60,000 barrels of beer a year, Florida Avenue Brewing Co. will be one of largest craft breweries in west Florida, Derby says. That opening was somewhat in doubt at our press time, so the opening will be on a small scale. There will be about 20 jobs created initially but, at its peak, the brewery will have more than 40 employees. “We’re happy to get anything open at this point,” Derby says. “A lot of restaurants have big openings and then die down. We’ll have the opposite effect. We’ll open at a slower pace. But we’re excited to get up and running even at diminished capacity.”

Let Clean-it Keep Your Home Or Office ‘Covid-Clean!’ By GARY NAGER

Is your home or office in need of a major cleaning? If you’ve been concerned about bringing someone into your home to clean during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Florida now in Phase 2 reopening under Gov. Ron Desantis’ plan, and the steps our friend Celly De Freitas of Clean-it and her crew take to make sure your home is left “Covid-clean,” I couldn’t recommend anyplace else to start looking for that help. Celly came to mine and Jannah’s medium-sized, two-bedroom apartment to find out what we expect to be cleaned every time she and/or members of her team arrive, how often we want them to clean and what things are either optional or don’t have to be cleaned on every visit. She walked through our pre-cleaned (does anyone not do that?) apartment with us to discuss, in some detail, what we want done in the bathroom, kitchen, each bedroom and the living room. Did we need her to clean our small terrace (nope), do dishes, start laundry or take out the garbage (we have valet trash, but she’ll tie it up and run it down to the dumpster if we need her to), or wipe down our baseboards? They even do windows if/when you need them to, etc.

Let’s Get Into It!

For that first cleaning, Celly cleaned our place herself, with one assistant, so that she could show that member of her team what her (and our) expectations are for each item on that checklist. She also will prep any other member of her crew who ends up cleaning a client’s home or office in the future about what they need to do to properly clean it, so there is never a drop-off in the quality of the cleaning when Celly doesn’t do the job herself, an issue we’ve had with other services. And, after that walk-through, the price Celly will quote you will often be lower than what you might expect (or perhaps, what you’ve paid before) for such high-quality cleaning. She always tries to have the same people cleaning our apartment whenever possible, but things can happen and she

Clean-it owner Celly De Freitas (left) posed without a mask for this picture, but all Clean-it staffers have been wearing masks and gloves to clean our editor’s apartment, even before the Covid-19 pandemic. Clean-it is accepting new clients now, so let Celly & her crew make your home or office sparkle, too!

will do everything she can to make sure she never misses a cleaning appointment, even if she has to be at our place on a different day than usual, and it genuinely matters to her that every client is just as happy with Clean-it as we have been. That quality control is probably more important to Celly than it has been to anyone else who has ever provided home or office cleaning services for me. It’s just the way she’s wired, the way she approached cleaning when she worked for someone else after she and her husband Roger and their two (then-)young sons, Henrique and Patrick, moved from their native Brazil 23 years ago and she worked in Tampa for another cleaning service. It’s the same way Celly has run Clean-it since she branched out on her own in 2013, and it shows. Although she does so with a beautiful accent, Celly speaks and understands English perfectly. Although some of her staff of eight speak only/mainly Portugese, Spanish or both, she will always respond to calls or texts of concern from her clients and will

make sure to fix anything they’re not happy with — if not right away, then definitely before the next time she sends anyone from her team to your place. “It’s always nice when people say nice things about us, tip the girls or especially, when they recommend us to someone else,” she says. “I like to keep all of my clients happy.”

Covid-Careful, Too!

Jannah and I were definitely concerned about bringing someone into our home to clean during the Covid-19 crisis, but here’s what we knew from the moment Clean-it started cleaning our place several months before the pandemic hit: She and her girls already wore masks and gloves, they always used their own environmentally-safe cleaning supplies and vacuum cleaner, our kitchen and bath surfaces had never been disinfected better nor had our place ever smelled better than it did after they were done. And, even though we usually leave the house while they’re cleaning, we’re always appreciative of the

quality of the job each time we return. Plus, she says that unlike many cleaning services, she didn’t furlough her employees and did everything she could to retain as many of her clients as possible when everyone was self-isolating. “Business has picked back up,” Celly says, “but it hasn’t been an easy time..for anyone.” Also, if you have kids and pets, she says, “We know they sometimes come into contact with cleaning products, whether from licking or just having their hands on the floor. So, we use products that won’t be harmful to their health.” Even so, she adds that Clean-it also is happy to use the cleaning products you use in your home if that’s what you prefer. To schedule a no-obligation consultation with Celly De Freitas of Clean-it, call (813) 505-0431 or email cleanitmc@gmail.com. Scrub-a-Dub Sanitizes & Makes Your Smelly Trash Bins Sparkle By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN As people are doing so much extra cleaning and disinfecting around their homes these days, Wesley Chapel resident Jennifer Trudel wants to help you take care of one of your messiest outdoor tasks — cleaning your garbage bins. Scrub-A-Dub Bin Cleaning, which was started in 2018 by Trudel, will bring a specially-designed truck to your home and will make your trash and recycling bins look and smell immaculately clean, removing leftover trash, dried liquids, sticky substances and bugs — along with 99.9% of all viruses, including Covid-19. “Our process cleans viruses, bacteria and mold,” Jennifer says. “Once we clean your bin, it’s going to be coronavirus free, for sure.” Even before the coronavirus pandemic, more and more Wesley Chapel and New Tampa residents already had been discovering the value of paying a relatively small amount to have someone else deal with their stinky trash bins. “Business has been growing,” Jennifer says. “Every day, we get new customers signing up.” She says that’s thanks mostly due to people who see her ad in the Neighborhood News, as well as those who see the truck driving down the street to provide the

In fact, Jennifer says her business has grown so much that she has had to purchase a second truck, which runs on the company’s busiest days, servicing Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and surrounding areas, including Land O’Lakes, Lutz, Odessa, Carrollwood and Trinity. Also because of the growth in her business, Jennifer has hired two drivers. So

now, she’s no longer the person actually cleaning your bins. She’s still the voice on the phone, however. That’s a role Jennifer says she cherishes, as she enjoys connecting with her customers, handling new sign-ups, scheduling cleanings and other administrative duties, to ensure they have the positive experience of interacting with a small business owner who truly loves what she does.

The Scrub-A-Dub truck services your bins on a regularly scheduled trash day, after the sanitation truck has picked up your trash and/or recycling. Jennifer sends reminders via emails and texts, so customers remember to leave their bins outside after trash pickup on their scheduled dates. At that time, her customers can confirm their appointment or let her know if they need to postpone their service due to going out of town, or for any other reason, for that matter. When the driver arrives, he opens your trash bin and uses a grabber to pull out anything left behind, then loads the bins into the truck, where a spinning nozzle blasts it with 200º (F) water. If needed, the inside of the bin will be scrubbed using a biodegradable degreaser, before the bin is run through the truck’s process again. The driver then pressure-sprays the outside of the lid, wipes the handles and the inside and outside of the lid — anywhere your hands might touch. Then, she says the bin no longer has an odor, but she wants it to smell good, so she also adds a deodorizer. Jennifer says many customers tell her they walk into the garage and wonder what smells so good, before realizing it’s the deodorizer Scrub-a-Dub puts in the bins. “Skeptics say their bins don’t have to

Some people’s bins don’t look that dirty, but in the bottom you may still see maggots. It’s pretty gross, but that’s our business.” Jennifer says that all of the cleaning products she uses — including the degreaser, disinfectant and deodorizer — are biodegradable. She says the dirty water that is rinsed out of the inside of your bins goes into the truck and is disposed of according to strict U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. Customers can choose a one-time cleaning, or pay for a year’s worth of services. The cost depends upon how often you want your bins cleaned, and whether you have one, two, or three bins — with annual service starting at just $75 for the entire year. A one-time cleaning of a single bin is $30. If you try a one-time service and decide you like it and want to sign up for the rest of the year, Jennifer will apply the amount you’ve already paid to whatever deal you choose. And, you’re never locked into a contract with Scrub-a-Dub. Cancel at any time and Jennifer will pro-rate your refund. “I like it because it’s pretty convenient,” says Mrs. Daniel, a happy Scruba-Dub customer. “They’re affordable, for one thing, and it saves a lot of time. People are busy and don’t want to be cleaning trash cans.” She adds that she likes that the service keeps her bin clean and smelling nice. “A lot of times my husband will throw something in the trash that leaks,” she says. “He doesn’t notice, but I do.” Since I was writing this story, Jennifer insisted she send a truck by my house to give me a first-hand and up-close experience of exactly how the service works. It was just as she described it — when I returned home after the Scrub-A-Dub truck had been by, my garbage can was placed neatly next to my garage door, spotlessly clean, Neighborhood News

dry, and definitely smelling fresh. I felt kind of guilty putting trash in it afterwards.

Referrals Earn Freebies

Jennifer says she’s happy to reward her customers who tell their neighbors and friends about Scrub-A-Dub. “When you’re a customer of ours, if you refer someone who signs up for an annual service, we give you a free cleaning,” she explains. “That’s unlimited. So, if you tell five people and they all sign up, you get five free cleanings.” Jennifer also says that’s not the only perk her customers have recently received from her. When she first launched her business, she bought small bottles of hand sanitizer with her logo as a promotional item. Over the past couple of years, she had given away some, but still had more on hand than she thought she could ever use. When hand sanitizer suddenly became scarce in March, she started giving one bottle away with every bin cleaning, and continued until she finally ran out in May. “It couldn’t have worked out any better,” Jennifer says. “It came in so handy. Our customers loved it.”

Pressure Washing, Too?

As Scrub-A-Dub continues to grow, Jennifer has expanded the services that are offered, as well. Businesses that have a dumpster can schedule a cleaning to keep away bugs, rodents, germs — and, of course, those hated stinky smells. Scrub-A-Dub also offers commercial and residential pressure washing of driveways and sidewalks. Special pricing on pressure washing is available to Scrub-A-Dub bin cleaning customers. To sign up for Scrub-A-Dub Bin Cleaning or for more info, visit ScrubADubBins.com or see the ad on pg. 34 of this issue.. You also can call, toll-free, (844) 727-8229 (844-SCRUBBY), to get a quote for cleaning commercial dumpsters, sidewalks and driveways. @NTWCNews

The Goddard School Puts The Safety Of Its Students First since we have a lot of kids,” Tejal says. “We have constant social distancing, and with the age and energy of the kids, that can be difficult. But, I think the kids are getting used to it. Now, they know because, when we used to wear masks, say, around the toddlers, they would get scared, but now they don’t. They’re used to it now, like, ‘Ok, this is the normal.’”

By MIKE CAMUNAS Even in the midst of a global pandemic, people just couldn’t — and didn’t want to stay away from The Goddard School of Wesley Chapel, located off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., behind the 7-Eleven across from AdventHealth Wesley Chapel. “In fact,” co-owner Tejal Patel says, “(the kids) don’t like to leave the school. They’re not excited to leave — they want to stay longer and do more, and I can attest to that. So, even with Covid-19, we have parents say they are going to enroll them back because their kids keep asking them for it, and they want to be back.” And, at this STEM school — in which the curriculum is based on the idea of educating students in the four specific disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach — it’s been like any other business recently, in that it hasn’t been business as usual at all. Indeed, Goddard is fully open and operational, but the school and its staff are adhering to all new protocols and guidelines to keep its students and faculty safe from the spread of Covid-19.

“No one comes inside — we take all the kids at the door,” owner and founder Dinesh Patel says. “Everyone gets their temperature taken. Masks for everyone. Even me.” He adds, “We disinfect all the facilities — everything, and sanitize many times a day. Plus, no outsiders

(are invited inside). No new contacts are allowed inside the facility, which means less exposure (for our staff and students).” And, he says, the entire staff is on board when it comes to safety. “We sanitize all the hallways and door handles and that can be a lot,

Newly appointed school director Debbie Smolenski says that teaching the students how to properly social distance, which is not an easy thing for young kids to remember when they’re playing or interacting, has been a top priority at The Goddard School. “When they’re sitting at tables, there’s a chair between each child, so this way they’re separated,” says Smolenski, who came on board in February, a month or so before the pandemic took hold. “We limit the centers of play to no more than two children per center and teachers keep them apart, so that they can social distance with just some friendly reminders.” She adds, “Everything is cleaned once they are done with it: toys, art supplies, surfaces, the playground — ev-

basis, teachers are using these as lessons and teaching the students why, for example, they must focus on cleanliness, even moreso now than usual. “It’s an educational process, too,” Smolenski says. “We are able to teach the children how to be safe, how to clean things — we even offer science experiments to show how we get rid of germs and why we wash our hands and show them short videos that help educate them.” The STEM lessons, in which parents can download an app and see their children’s progress throughout the day with pictures of the activities and daily report cards, are important at The Goddard School because the focus is on preparing the kids for a traditional school, specifically kindergarten. Debbie Smolenski was appointed the new school director at The Goddard School of Wesley Chapel in February. erything. After every activity too. We’re being thorough.” But, being thorough with cleaning, distancing and masking protocols hasn’t been all just extra work in a time of a new normal. In fact, the school has incorporated this new normal into its daily lessons. So, while there’s all kinds of new procedures for the kids to do on a daily

She adds, “We’re big on STEM — introducing them to a lot of new and different activities and helping them understand why we do the things we do and why we learn the things we do.” And, the parents say that The Goddard School of Wesley Chapel has been successful, based on how well their own children are doing there. For example, Ann-Christine Wainio, whose daughter Mia has been attending The Goddard School since August 2019, and now spends about six hours a day there, says, “It was the best decision my husband and I made. (Mia) has grown immensely verbally, with her attention span and her learning levels. She has made little friends and there’s not a single day she hesitates going. She even asks to go on weekends.” Wainio also says she kept Mia home An Obvious Difference “about two months” when Covid-19 “That’s how I feel we are different shuttered businesses and schools, but from a daycare — because really we did return because Mia “asked to see are a school,” Tejal Patel says. “We’re her friends, wanted to go play with getting them ready for kindergarten them (and) wanted to be at Goddard. and that’s what it’s all about. Even the “We’re very comfortable and toddlers have lesson plans, and we’re at ease with all the new precautions about exposing them to different things and protocols in place,” Wainio adds. academically. “(Goddard) is the best place,” she says. “I would definitely recommend it to any parents looking for a program or (pre)school. We went to five other places and we went back to Goddard because they are that good. Look at other options, but I speak for our family, because there is no other place I’d want my daughter.” Meanwhile, Dinesh calls Smolenski, “the heart of the school,” noting that the looks on the faces of the children they teach is all the confirmation management needs to know that The Goddard School of Wesley Chapel is getting it right. “It’s amazing just to see how excited (the children) are as they rush to the door to tell their parents about what they learned here at school — that makes our day right there,” Smolenski says. “They really come out and show them — ‘Look what I did today!’ And that, right there, (gives me) real excitement in my heart.” The Goddard School of Wesley Chapel is located at 2539 Bruce B. Local Teen Delivers A Positive Message By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

For one Wesley Chapel teenage entrepreneur, every Friday is Black Friday. In conjunction with her online store selling T-shirts that promote positive messages for black teenagers, Janiah Hinds also posts a video every week of someone who is important in black

Neighborhood News

history. She begins each video with “Welcome to Black Friday…” The 15-year-old, who lives in Country Walk and will soon start her junior year at Wesley Chapel High, hasn’t missed a Friday since she first came up with the idea last fall. She says it started with brainstorming in her room one day. “I thought of stereotypes of African Americans and I wrote them down,” she says. When she showed them to her dad, an entrepreneur and business coach himself, he encouraged her to put the list on a T-shirt to sell. Janiah’s online store now carries T-shirts that dispel those stereotypes, plus three additional T-shirt designs that celebrate being black. For example, one popular shirt says, “Black is ambitious, powerful, intelligent, resilient, hardworking.” She also created a limited edition design for Juneteenth that sold out. Janiah named her business “Slay It Proud,” which she says means to “rock the message proudly” and also is a tribute to the song, “Say it loud! I’m black and I’m proud” by the late, great R&B superstar James Brown. She says it’s also a nod to her

13-year-old sister, Joelle, who also is a young entrepreneur herself. Joelle started a business selling press-on nails, called “Slay All Day Nails,” last year. “When I was younger, I never would have thought I would have my own business selling T-shirts,” says Janiah, “but I’m glad that I have this opportunity and that I can use my platform to spread black history.” That’s what Janiah says is her true passion — sharing black history with teenagers and others.

Any Suggestions?

So, she came up with the idea to

post the weekly videos. With the selfimposed responsibility of posting so much new content, she says she now takes suggestions and also does quite a bit of research of her own. In the past couple of months, she’s posted videos about Ida B. Wells, a prominent anti-lynching campaigner in the early 1900s; a famous “hypocrisy speech” delivered on July 4, 1852 by Frederick Douglass; as well as one about the inventor of the Super Soaker water gun in the 1980s, Lonnie Johnson. “A favorite person of mine would See “Slay It Proud” on pg. 26.

be Shirley Chisholm,” Janiah says. “She was the first African American woman in Congress. When she (ran) for president of the US, she wasn’t allowed to be on the stage and debate (against the other candidates) because she was black. She had to take legal action to be allowed to participate.” In 1972, not only was Chisholm was the first black person to run for a major party nomination for U.S. President, she was also the first woman ever to run for the presidential nomination for the Democratic party. Janiah’s dad, Kymone Hinds, says he also is learning from his daughter. “From a young age, Janiah has had a heart for people who are in need and those who are forgotten about. In addition, from the time she was first exposed to black history, she has become a self-student — doing self-studies in that area — and has helped to educate me on important figures in black history that I didn’t know about.” Janiah says her business is just the start. In the future, she says she hopes to become a civil rights lawyer and help bring justice and equality to people. As she sees Black Lives Matter protests happening throughout the country, she sees an opportunity to change the world for the better.

26

“I hope that what’s going on now can bring a better change for future generations, especially future generations for people who look me.” Janiah has even been featured on local TV news stations, including a February interview on WFLA-TV News Channel 8 (screenshot, right)). And while Slay It Proud was founded with black teenagers in mind, Janiah says it’s not limited to them. “A lot of white people and people of other races have supported my business and bought my ‘Black is’ shirts,” she says. “To me, it’s saying that you see something is wrong and you want to fix it and change society for the better.” Her dad sees Janiah as a young leader. “In any movement for change, people are playing different roles,” says Kymone. “There are those on the front line making sure it stays in view and those pushing for change at the political level. Her role is helping people to understand black history. Here is a true education, besides the limited scope of slavery and the civil rights movement.” Janiah’s website is SlayItProud. com, where you can view all of her merchandise and access her virtual African American museum. She posts her Black Friday videos on Facebook and Instagram. Find them by searching “Slay It Proud.”

Lima Brings The ‘World’s Best Cuisine’ To New Tampa! By Gary Nager

photos by Charmaine George & Gary Nager

Even though I lived or worked in New York City — where you can get pretty much any type of food you like at almost any hour of the day or night — for more than a decade, I had never been told that of all the different types of Latin and South American cuisines out there, Peruvian food was among the best in the world — and actually was named #1 by Bloomberg.com in 2017. It wasn’t until long after I first moved to Florida and met (and had dinner with) people from Peru or tried a Peruvian restaurant that I started to get the message. And, once I did sample the uniquely delicious cuisine of the Land of the Incas at an excellent Peruvian place in the Carrollwood area a few years ago, however, I realized that I had been missing out on something delicious all these years. What I didn’t know, however, was that New Tampa would soon have its own Peruvian restaurant — named Lima, for the capital of the seventh most populous metropolitan area in the Americas. Lima Rotisserie Chicken & Peruvian Cuisine owner Oscar Escudero and his family have brought a truly unique gem to the Publix-anchored New Tampa center plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., in the location previously occupied by El Pescador Mexican Seafood, although they, of course, finally got the place open just a couple of weeks before Covid-19 shut down the local economy in March.

Start With The Chicken?

Even so, Oscar and his family and staff have been able to recently reopen Lima with a loyal following of customers who can’t get enough of Lima’s signature dishes like the Peruvian rotisserie chicken (right), which can’t be compared with anything you’ll find at Publix or Costco for tenderness, taste or the crispy, amazing skin. Jannah and I had to avoid the skin one time during the pandemic because we were still in the weight-loss phase of our diet — and honestly, we regretted it. It’s a must-try and it definitely is at its crispy,

28

lip-smacking best when you dine-in. Speaking of that, the inside of Lima is small, casual and appealing, and there are some other dishes that just can’t be as good for takeout or delivery (which are available; see below and the ad on pg. 35) as they are when you eat at the restaurant. The one that springs instantly to mind are the uniquely beautiful and savory Conchitas Parmesana, or baked scallops on the half shell, as shown in the picture bottom left. It’s an order of four large sea scallops in butter, lemon juice and a thick topping of parmesan cheese. I told Oscar that the only thing missing from this dish is a great, crispy bread or toast points because there’s enough cheese and butter left over after eating each scallop to make another whole appetizer. Another dish that traditionally is served as a starter (in Lima’s case, it’s a large, shareable dish) that I already can’t live without is the Ceviche de Pescado, or diced fresh fish of the day ceviche (snapper in the top photo on the next page), which is raw chunks of fish in a traditional marinade of seasoned lime, aji rocoto peppers, julienne red onions and lots of cilantro. It’s served with a side of traditional Incan corn (with those large, thick kernels that soak up the sauce and taste so yummy) and a couple of slices of sweet potatoes. The fish ceviche also is available as a trio, with the same amount of marinated fish divided into three smaller portions, each with its own delicious sauce — one with an aji Amarillo (pepper) cream, one with a rocoto cream and one with cilantro cream — all different and each so good in its own way. For those of you who don’t share my

shellfish allergy, the ceviche also is available “de Mariscos,” or with mixed seafood (fish, shrimp, mussels and calamari). Another favorite is the Lomo Saltado Lima (above), which is a hearty dish of beef tenderloin tips wok-sautéed with spices, sliced onions, fresh tomato wedges, cilantro and a touch of soy sauce and vinegar served over a bed of crispy French fries and with a side of white rice.

Peruvian Chinese?

What do the Peruvians know about wok-searing? Apparently, a lot! Peru is as far west as you can go in South America, so according to Oscar, when the country built its railroad to go from the desert coast of Lima on the Pacific Ocean to and through the Andes mountains that divide the north from the south of the country, many Chinese engineers and builders came across the Pacific and settled in Peru. They brought wok-fired cooking with them and Lima (the city) became a hotspot for dishes that look and taste a lot like your favorite Chinese lo mein and fried rice (see photo, next page). The lo mein is called Tallarin Saltado de pollo (although you can have it with steak or seafood) and features pulled “a la brasa” (rotisserie) chicken, with sliced onions,

tomatoes and cilantro blended with delicious lo mein noodles, soy sauce and vinegar. The Arroz Chaufa (fried rice) has scallions, egg and a distinctively nutty taste and is topped with crispy noodles. Speaking of side dishes, the black beans and rice, salad and fried yuca all get high marks, especially the unique (there’s that word again) spicing of the black beans. And, while the rotisserie chicken (available in 1/4-, 1/2- and whole chicken portions, each with sides) is probably still the biggest draw at Lima, there also are other delicious starters, sandwiches and two kids platters for only $7 each. When you dine in, you also owe it to yourself to try the ice cold Cusqueña golden lager beer of Peru and/or the Inca Cola, even though Coca-Cola came in and bought out the original Peruvian company. I also can’t even tell you how good the Alfajores shown below the beverages on the next page are, but they’re cookie sandwiches topped with chocolate and powdered sugar and filled with dulce de leche creme. Decadent. Lima (19062 BBD) is offering 15% off any take-out or dine-in order with the coupon on page 31 & offers delivery through Grubhub, UberEats & Doordash. For info, call (813) 304-0205.

Our editor recommends the Lomo Saltado Lima (tenderloin tips; top of previous page), Ceviche de Pescado (above), the Tallarin Saltado de Pollo (Peruvian lo mein, left), the Peruvian style Rotisserie chicken ( inset left on previous page) and the Conchitas Parmesana, or baked scallops on the half shell (bottom far left on previous page) anat Lima!

Nibbles & Business The Latest & Not-So-Great News In Dining, Shopping & Business In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel! Aldi? Finally? Really???

Yes, Wesley Chapel’s Aldi supermarket was set to finally open on S.R. 56 (in front of Costco) on July 1, but that was two days after we went to press with this issue, so all we can show you again is the front of the building. I hate when that happens! I will miss the dozen or so phone calls a week to our office asking if we were Aldi (because of all of the previous stories we’ve run that people still access online)!

What About Main Event & Rock & Brews???

I didn’t show a pic of the KISS-themed Rock & Brews on S.R. 56 (just west of I-75) here because even though it already looks sooo close to being finished, the word on the street is that it isn’t expected to open until October (ugh). The better news is that the Main Event bowling & entertainment center has announced a North Tampa Bay Chamber Grand Opening event on Friday, July 17, so check our Neighborhood News Facebook page or NeighborhoodNewsOnline.net for updates and for a big story in our next print editions!

New Italian Options Opening Everywhere!

There hadn’t been very many new businesses opening in either of our distribution

areas until the last couple of weeks of May, when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gave the OK for the state to move into Phase 2 of his reopening plan. Between then and the end of June, there had been a new flurry of business opening activity, even as DeSantis ordered that no alcohol be consumed on premises at bars, as a reaction to the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases. It remains to be seen if there will be any further scaling back of Florida’s re-opening or if any of the many planned business openings will be affected by the unfortunate recent surge of the virus. At any rate, Wesley Chapel has a number of new Italian-themed eateries on the way, some closer than others to opening. The first is one to get excited about, especially since it’s only a month or so away from opening as this reaches you, is Pasta di Guy (pronounced like “he’s a nice guy”), the restaurant brought to you by popular local food truck owner/Chef Guy Carmeli (photo, left), who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in London. Guy promises to specialize in something you’ve never had in Wesley Chapel — madefrom-scratch pasta dishes with yummy homemade sauces, plus salads, desserts & much more. For all of us who were saddened by the recent closing of the second location of OTB Delights Café on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. a couple of months ago, it’s nice that something so promisingly new will soon fill the space. For more information, search “Pasta di Guy” on Facebook. Also coming soon to north of S.R. 54 is the equally anticipated Falabella Family Bistro (rendering above right) in The Village at The Grove, although owner Steve Falabella (who also owns 900º Woodfired Pizza in the

Shops at Wiregrass) says that his construction has just begun and he hopes to open in October. Also coming a little bit further down the road is Moschella’s Italian Eatery & Market, which we first heard about just before we went to press with our June Wesley Chapel issue, in an under-construction plaza at the corner of Old Pasco Rd. and Post Oak Blvd. New Tampa also has a new fast-casual Italian concept called Oronzo Honest Italian, which opened in June, next to the also-new Michi Ramen in the former Men’s Wearhouse location facing BBD.
