Frog-Loving Wesley Chapel Girl Wins International Eco-Award By Sean Bowes Do you know the difference between a toad and frog? Do you know how amphibians and reptiles are different? If you cannot answer either of those questions with absolute certainty, then it doesn’t seem likely that you could list the six most populous frogs in the Wesley Chapel area and be able to identify each of them just by hearing their unique frog calls. But, Avalon Theisen, a 10-year-old girl who lives in Meadow Pointe, knows all of this, and more. Avalon, who recently won the 2011 Action for Nature International Young Eco-Hero Award, an honor presented annually to young people ages 8-16 for their environmental achievements around the world, is more than just an animal lover. She is more like an eco-prodigy. Just a decade old, she spends her time traveling to countries in Central America, like Nicaragua, to study indigenous amphibians such as the red-

eyed tree frog, and to release reptiles like endangered Nicaraguan iguanas. “They’re very cute,” says Avalon about the tree frogs. “Predators think they might be poisonous because of their (bright) colors, but really they’re harmless.” Her mother, Deborah, says that Avalon has always been a nature-lover. When she was outside as a toddler, she would love spending time looking up at the treetops. Avalon used to participate in a lot of beauty pageants, too, she says, but her devotion to animals started to get in the way. “She would be wearing her dress and tiara, and just be covered in lizards or holding frogs,” says her mom. Action For Nature, a non-profit organization, gives the Young EcoHero Award to students who have made an exceptional achievement to protect the Earth. However, Avalon’s accomplishments cannot be measured with just one specific example. Beryl Kay, president of Action For Nature,

says Avalon was rewarded for her tremendous efforts for the protection of the environment throughout her life. Additionally, last year, the homeschooled student designed the logo for a bio-sand water filter company, Friendly Water for the World Inc., which supplies water filters to under-developed countries, like Kenya, to produce clean water from untreated, bacteria-ridden water sources. Avalon also has previously been granted the Nate the Newt Award for her efforts for SaveTheFrogs.com (she made a presentation on how digital programs could replace frog dissection in high schools), she has won first place in a frog call identification contest, and was featured on CurrClick.com as “Student Of The Week” for her environmental awareness. “She is a very talented and driven little girl,” says Kay. “What these young people achieve is amazing.” When Avalon isn’t raising tadpoles See “Frog Girl” on page 22.

Ten-year-old Avalon Theisen, of Meadow Pointe, shown here holding six of her froggy friends in Nicaragua, recently won an international Eco-Hero award.

“More than 20 shots were fired (at his cruiser).” Eventually, the chase led to the CVS Pharmacy parking lot at 4910 Allen Rd., where a passenger again fired shots at Widener, this time striking his front left tire. He continued the pursuit until the tire went completely flat at Morris Bridge Rd. and S.R. 54, where he reported that the suspects were headed north. Widener was looking for speeders on a stretch of S.R. 54 three miles east of Wesley Chapel that has a 35 mph speed limit, when he noticed a late-model Subaru sedan passing by at 45 mph, 10 over the limit, so he flipped on his lights. With the sirens howling, the Doughertys’ Subaru gathered speed and a chase ensued, at some points reaching speeds up to 100-mph on S.R. 54. As the vehicles came across Allen Rd., heading towards Wesley Chapel, a passenger began firing shots at Ofc. Widener’s vehicle at 7:12 a.m.. “During the attack, I was concerned about civilian safety,” said Ofc. Widener at a recent news conference.

Some families do everything together, it seems. Unfortunately, for the three Dougherty siblings, family activities ranged from high-speed car chases and police shootouts to a bank robbery and an eight-day, nationwide manhunt, which started on August 2, ended earlier this month.

The trio, Ryan Edward Dougherty, 21; Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26; and Lee Grace Dougherty, 29, all lived with each other in Lacoochee, a small, poverty stricken town about 30 miles north of Wesley Chapel. All of them had arrest records before their wild ride began in Pasco County on August 2. For Zephyrhills Police Department (ZPD) Officer Kevin Widener, it started

Weatherford On New Tampa, Wesley Chapel & Redistricting cha•ris•ma (n.) : a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure (such as a political leader).

If you’ve ever spent more than five minutes with State House District 61 Representative Will Weatherford (RWesley Chapel), you probably already like him, regardless of your political views or leanings. The fact is that Rep. Weatherford, 31, will soon be the youngest Speaker of the House this great state has ever had. Will also will be the first Speaker from Pasco County in the last 100 or so years. In other words, the oldest of nine children raised in Land O’Lakes, all of whom played competitive sports at the highest collegiate level, is (to use a sports cliché that just happens to ring true) a game-changer. He’s the type of fiscally conservative Republican and entrenched, genuine family man that even Democrats can at least embrace personally. And, Will is smart enough and sure enough of himself to be able to engage in lively debates with people who disagree with his politics without either side losing his or her temper. So, when this coalition-building, rising young state legislator was the guest speaker on August 2 at the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC)’s monthly busiWesley Chapel Neighborhood News 15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa, FL 33647 Phone: (813) 910-2575 Fax: 910-2483 Website: WCNeighborhoodNews.com Adv. An editorial by Gary Nager ness breakfast at a packed Saddlebrook Resort ballroom, there seemed to be a little bit of magic in the air. Will talked about taxes and jobs and pensions, about Florida’s future and our country’s future. My favorite line of Will’s at the event was about the U.S. Legislature’s last-minute agreement to raise the nation’s debt ceiling: “If we had defaulted...and the government stopped working...how could you tell the difference?,” he quipped.

But, with the State House’s Republican majority and the District 61 committee’s charismat- State Rep. Will ic Republican leader Weatherford (Weatherford), the redistricting decisions are likely to be made to best optimize Republican chances in races that will be contested

at the same time as the 2012 presidential election. That is in no way a jab at Will, it’s a fact of partisan politics in this country. The party in charge basically gets to re-draw those lines. The bottom line is that we will just have to wait the process out and see. September is a great month to get involved with the Chamber. On Tuesday, Sept. 6, Lisa Stoessel of the American Cancer Society will be the featured breakfast speaker at Saddlebrook and the Chamber’s annual Awards Banquet (see pg. 9) will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, also at Saddlebrook.

But, Will also is the chairman of Florida’s House Redistricting Committee and the fact is that his District 61 is one that could undergo some changes — although Will didn’t let on at the Chamber meeting if he already knew what those changes might be. He said his committee is still conducting public meetings (like the one held on July 26 at Wiregrass Ranch High, which I was unable to attend) to get as much public input as possible on all of Florida’s legislative districts before beginning the process of trying to implement any boundary changes. District 61 is an interesting case, because most of Weatherford’s constituents live in Pasco County, although most of “northeastern” New Tampa also is in his District. The bottom line he mentioned during the Chamber meeting was that at the meeting held at Wiregrass Ranch High the previous week, there was some call from the speakers at the meeting, which received enthusiastic response from many in the audience, for Pasco to have at least one legislative district of its own. If so, District 61 would be a more logical choice to be “all Pasco” than District 44 (which is primarily a Hernando County district

W ESLEY C HAPEL By Sean Bowes

‘Bye Bye Old Ramp’ & Hello To The New S.R. 56 Ramps By now, most of Wesley Chapel residents realize that they have waved “so long” to the old northbound exit ramp for S.R. 56 and welcome two new and improved ramps to Exit 275 from I-75. The new improvements definitely seem to be easing traffic congestion for vehicles entering I-75 from the I-275 interchange, and also allow drivers from both interstate highways swift access to S.R. 56, especially during peak travel hours. The new exit ramps are the latest edition of the ongoing interstate widening project in our area, according to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) spokesman John McShaffrey, which is coming along as scheduled. SEMA Construction, Inc., started the $31.4-million project on October 17, 2009. “This is going to make things much easier for anyone trying to get on S.R. 56,” McShaffrey says. “Unless they miss the ramp the first time, and have to turn around, but after they get used to it, people will appreciate how

News Briefs much better this is (than the previous ramp).” FDOT has erected three different signs to notify drivers on both I-75 and I-275 about the entrance to the new ramps, and to make sure that no one tries to access the old ramp to S.R. 56 – which, as of August 16, has been blocked off with road barriers and will no longer be accessible to any travelers. Vehicles that do enter the new exit ramps from I-75 and I-275 will meet at a two-lane, 2.3-mile- long stretch of highway that runs parallel with I-75 until it merges right onto S.R. 56. The important thing to note about the entrance off I-75 is that it is located nearly 2 miles closer to the Bruce B. Downs Blvd. exit off I-75 than the old one and is now south of where the County Line Rd. “apex” crosses the two interstates. As of now, both lanes are open and have had a positive reception from the community. McShaffrey says that FDOT has made efforts to keep lane closures to a minimum on the new exit ramps, as further construction around the new lanes is still planned, although he says they are likely to take place during early morning hours.

Laying down a new top layer of pavement, and work around the medians will take place until the construction of the exit ramps has been completely finished, which FDOT officials estimate will be sometime in the spring of 2012. According to McShaffrey, the roadway may seem a bit rough until the final layer of asphalt has been placed on the ramp. Children Hit By Semi A 16-year-old Wesley Chapel girl and five of her passengers are alive after the new driver drove her Dodge minivan in front of the path of a semi truck on S.R. 54 and Curley Rd., a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report states. Jasmine Dixon was driving the 2005 van with four children, ages 5-12, who are all Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents. Jamira Dixon, 31, sat in the front passenger seat as Jasmine tried to make a left turn onto Curley Rd. from S.R. 54 on July 26, and was struck by a semi truck traveling westbound. According to the FHP report, the truck did not have enough time to stop before colliding with the minivan. All of the passengers in the van were treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. The children ages 5 and 12 sustained the most serious injuries and were airlifted to the hospital. All of the passengers were wearing their seatbelts.

Rash Of Smash & Grabs Robberies Strike Our Area Suspects are still on the loose for a recent rash of crimes in our area that only can be described as “smash and grab” burglaries. The break-ins left at least 12 businesses in New Tampa and the Wesley Chapel area with broken front doors and damaged interiors.

According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), the suspect(s) first struck in the wee hours of the morning, smashing the glass front doors of businesses at 17500 Preserve Walk Ln. in Highwoods Preserve, adjacent to Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., east of I-75, on August 4. The suspects then walked into the restaurant, coffee shop or hair salon, sometimes taking the cash registers, sometimes not. Cold Stone Creamery, Starbucks, Jimmy Johns, and Salon at the Walk were just some of the business targeted by the vandal(s) on August 4. That same night, six businesses in the shopping plaza at 6431 County Line Rd, less than five miles north of Preserve Walk Ln., were robbed and/or vandalized. Hungry Howie’s, Grandeur Salon, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Frogury Frozen Yogurt, China Wok and Hudson Cleaners were all victimized. The suspects escaped with an estimated $800 in cash total, TPD reports say. “They broke through my front window, and stole a computer,” said Arno Schlappig, owner of Salon at the Walk. “They didn't take any money. We don’t keep much in the cash register.” Police are looking for a male suspect, 18-24 years old, 5-foot-8 with a medium build. TPD detectives are working together with the Pasco County Sher-

iff's Office (PCSO) to find the perpetrators, as the New Tampa crimes are very similar to the recent break-ins at three businesses located near the intersection of S.R. 56 and BBD. Anyone with information about the suspects or crimes is asked to call TPD at 931-6500 or PCSO at (727) 844-7711.

Restaurant Owner Dies Of Injuries From Beating

The charges of attempted murder and child abuse are likely to change for Chunping Lin, the man who, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), beat his wife so severely that she eventually died of her injuries on July 15 from the attack that took place on May 20. Readers who have been following the story in the Neighborhood News may remember from our previous reports that Lisa Tian, the wife of Lin and owner of the Joy of Tokyo restaurant, was seriously injured when her husband beat her to the point of sustaining

major injuries to her brain and wrist. According to published reports, a search warrant early on in the case stated that Tian had, “multiple skull fractures (and) was suffering from brain swelling and a broken arm.” A report from HCSO showed that Lin’s child abuse charge stemmed from Tian’s 10-year-old son trying to protect her, but was attacked by Lin as well, and suffered a laceration on one of his fingers. Tian was transferred from St. Joseph's Hospital, where she remained in critical and serious condition since the beating, to Melach Hospice House at 11125 North 52nd St. She passed away three days later. A friend of Tian’s, Sara Johnson, spoke out on a Tampa-based blog about Tian’s marriage with Lin. “She has suffered from her husband’s abuse since I have known her,” Johnson blogged. “She never left him because she loved him, and he didn’t speak good English. She didn't know how he would make it on his own.”

“Doughertys” Continued from page 1 one day before the car chase for his latest crime: exchanging sexually explicit text messages with an 11-year-old girl, making him a registered sex offender. It was reported that just before the chase started, Ryan had text messaged his mother saying, “There’s a time for all of us to die.” The trio, whom authorities considered heavily armed and extremely dangerous, then spent the next few hours driving north before they committed their next crime, authorities say. Lee-Grace, the oldest of the trio, is a stripper who worked at a club called Cheetah’s in Cocoa Beach. She said on her photo webpage that she is, “28 but I act like I'm 17 most of the time. I love to farm and shoot guys and wreck cars. I’m a redneck and proud of it. I like milk and German engineering and causing mayhem with my siblings.” By the time the “Dougherty Gang” reached Georgia, it seemed they were ready for more “mayhem.” According to the FBI, three suspects matching the trio’s descriptions, entered a bank in Valdosta, and opened fire with an AK47 assault rifle, shooting at the ceiling, and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. Ryan is believed to have purchased an AK47 two years ago at a Zephyrhills pawn shop, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), said. After the bank robbery, authorities around the nation began the manhunt for the siblings. Their mugshots were posted on billboards, social networking sites and reports came out from hun-

The Helping Hands Food Pantry, based at the Atonement Lutheran Chirch on S.R. 54, provides food and more for thousands of Pasco residents. By Sean Bowes In these tough economic times, Social Security payments, food stamps and other government assistance are still not putting enough food on the table for many families. The Helping Hands Pantry in Wesley Chapel is trying to fill some of that void for needy Pasco County residents. If you’ve ever driven down S.R. 54 on a Wednesday afternoon, chances are you have you seen the crowd that assembles outside of the Atonement Lutheran Church of Wesley Chapel. Many of the visitors are jobless, some are homeless and others just need a helping hand. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Wednesday, the small church transforms into a food pantry which hands out hundreds of bags of food to any individual or family who needs a little help. The program is aimed at residents who cannot afford the groceries they need to buy each week. “Even if you think you make too much money to qualify to receive (the pantry’s) food, we'll help you out,” says Yvette Williams, assistant director of the program. “We try to not turn anyone away.” Typically, Helping Hands serves between 150-180 families each week. The non-profit organization hands out numbers to each Pasco County resident outside, and lets in five people at a time to collect their groceries for the week, at zero cost to the shopper. Normally, people start lining up outside around 7 a.m., sometimes even earlier, to be first in line to enter the church and fill their bags from the impressive smorgasbord of items, including everything from breads and cookies to a variety of fresh produce and frozen meat. Volunteers set up makeshift grocery aisles every Tuesday, carrying food supplies from an air-conditioned storage shed behind the

church to get ready for the rush of people the next day. “They always have plenty of canned foods and bread,” said Christal Poitevint, a Shady Hills woman who commutes 40-minutes each way every week to stock up on food for her family, “There is at least enough so you have something to eat.” Many people like Poitevint use the program in addition to food stamps; because, she says, food stamps “aren't always enough” to fill their plates. According to Carla Haberland, the director of Helping Hands Pantry, the organization gave out more than 280,000 lbs of food to 26,866 individuals last year. Hablerland says at this point, the most difficult thing is not really finding enough food for the residents, but staffing enough volunteers to help set up the grocery aisles and assist people with their shopping. The pantry collects all of its food from local individuals, the USDA and other churches in Wesley Chapel, as well as stores like Sweetbay, Bagelicious, and Walgreens. Volunteers for the organization come from all over the area and students from youth groups like the Wesley Chapel High National Honor Society volunteer at the pantry to earn some community service hours. While the program appears to be a smooth running operation, Haberland says there are still ways it could be improved to help out the community more efficiently. She also says the program needs the use of a larger storage shed, as the pantry’s current one is too small to handle the amount of food delivered each week. For more information about volunteering or donations for Helping Hands Pantry, call 973-2211, or Email office@be-at-1.org. Atonement Lutheran Church is located at 29617 S.R. 54.

Prudential Tropical Realty Serves Buyers & Sellers Around The Clock! By Sheryl Young Are people still having the good fortune of selling and buying houses? Yes, especially when they have a company like Prudential Tropical Realty on their side. And, within Prudential Tropical's 19 locations, including one right here in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area, there’s a great full-service real estate solutions provider located right here to serve local residents. The vivacious team at the local location in the Publix-anchored Shoppes of New Tampa plaza on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. (BBD), just south of S.R. 56, is eager to share their knowledge, expertise and love of homes with hopeful home seekers as well as home sellers. We spoke with vice president of sales and marketing Rob Hilliker and several of his more than 50 real estate agents from this office -- Ronnie Preusch, Debbie Marvin, Beverly Carollo and Christina Barone — are proud to be a part of the Prudential Tropical team. “With the right strategies, this may be both a seller’s and buyer’s market,” Hilliker says. “Things are

12

looking up. And, we are here to provide the full array of services that surround the major decision of buying or selling a home.” Ronnie adds that whether it’s a better market for buyers or sellers may depend on the location, not today’s economy. “High-end homes still represent a buyer's market,” she explains, while Debbie says that a seller may still find it more necessary to adapt their price to the market at the lower end. “I’ve worked for other Realtors, but whatever the case, Prudential Tropical offers more marketing tools and resources to get things done right,” Debbie states. Beverly agrees. “Prudential offers more services to sellers, buyers and corporations that are looking for relocation living space for their employees. Plus, we have mortgage services, rental properties…we have access to showcase everything.” They all agreed that there are several things that set Prudential Tropical apart from other real estate offices. For one thing, a special perk for both agents and customers at Prudential Tropical is that each agent is given his

or her own website. This way, customers can find out more about who they're working with, and have easy access to individual contact information. “We also live, work and breathe the real estate business,” Ronnie says with enthusiasm. “We go above and beyond. some make it a family affair. Debbie and Christina’s husbands also both work in the business, and they consider themselves “Team Marvin” and “Team Barone,” respectively. Christina is pleased at how quickly help comes to them as agents, so they can in turn help their customers in a timely and efficient manner. “Our Managing Broker, Dennis Derbes, is always there for us,” Christina says. “There’s no way anyone can do this job part time,” Beverly adds. Our heads must always be in the game. We need to know every legal aspect of contracts and updates on the houses. We have to love what we do, and we have to love working with each other to get all the pieces together.” The agents pointed out that they also take time to meet the property appraisers. Sometimes an appraiser isn’t familiar with an area, and won't do the house justice with the appraisal because they go off averages on paper. Prudential Tropical agents know their neighborhoods, and can point things out which might be important to the proper appraisal of a home. Between just these agents, they have about 60 years of experience. Hilliker defines their office as the “Nordstrom’s of Real Estate,” and the

group estimates that 95 percent of their business comes from referrals through previous customers. So, their service has to be outstanding. For newer agents, Prudential Tropical has something they call Rock University, which they were able to independently develop because these 19 offices are a privately owned franchise. “The newly hired agents are not just thrown on the floor,” Hilliker explains. “We have a training program even after they pass the state test.”

Realtors, doing all the paperwork. “They’ve done an excellent job of marketing and selling the houses we’ve renovated,” he says. “Through their efforts and guidance on pricing, it all has worked out so well. They even help me decide where to use stainless appliances and with other design aspects. Compared to other agents I’ve used, their follow-through is outstanding.” In conclusion, Hilliker says, “It's a great time once again to buy and sell homes. It's wonderful to hear the noise of construction in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel areas again,

but our office really hasn’t had a hard time.” Maybe it’s all that training, dedication and 24/7 service that keeps these Prudential Tropical Realty agents at the top of their game. Expectant buyers and sellers can visit this Prudential Tropical Realty office at 1830 Bruce B. Repeat customer Bob Abajian confirms that Prudential Tropical’s service is top-notch. He and his wife Deborah have done business with the office several times, specifically with Debbie Marvin and her husband, who also just happens to be named Robert! “We met Bob & Debbie [Marvin] while selling a house in 2001,” says Abajian. “We hit it off and ended up also buying through them. Then, I got into the business of fixing up houses and re-selling them and continued to work with the Marvins.” Abajian adds that the Marvins really saw everything through with showings, handling various other

Mazzy Gives ‘Two Paws Up’ To Seven Oaks Pet Hospital! By Gary Nager If you have a dog or cat (and what family doesn’t?) and you’re not taking your furry best friend to see my friends at Seven Oaks Pet Hospital on S.R. 56 (next to Boardwalk Frozen Custard), I think you should consider visiting this extremely popular veterinary office. But, don’t just take my word for it. Listen to Mazzy, the new dog in not only my life, but in the lives of everyone in our office. It was only a couple of issues ago when I lost Goldie, my beloved golden retriever, and I had no intentions of getting another dog — at least not anytime soon. But, after meeting Mazzy’s brother Louie and being told that if someone in our office didn’t take his identical twin, one of these adorable “Schnorkies” (we believe they’re part schnauzer and part Yorkshire terrier) was headed to an animal shelter. I couldn’t let that happen, especially when Mazzy just happens to be the best-trained, most affectionate, most obedient five-month-old pup I’ve ever met. So, where did I decide to take Mazzy for his veterinary care? To the same wonderful place that helped get me through Goldie’s cancer and her having to be put down when she began suffering. I can honestly say that I have

never met a more caring, outstanding doctor and staff than Sree Reddy, D.V.M., and his amazing crew at Seven Oaks Pet Hospital. Not only do these folks ALL love animals, Dr. Reddy has done everything he can to keep his prices for outstanding pet care among the lowest in the area and you’re never waiting much more than five minutes from the time you walk in until the time you see the doctor. “I don’t appreciate being made to wait very long when I go to a doctor’s office,” says Dr. Reddy, who graduated from the College of Vet Medicine in India in 1997. He then completed his training at the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in Tuskegee, AL, in 2000, and moved to Florida in July 2004. “I know people want to get in here, get the proper care for their pet, feedback and instructions from me and my staff and get back home and not have to spend so much money,” he says. “ I haven’t raised my prices since I opened here four years ago.” The immaculate facility offers extremely affordable wellness packages, where all of your office visits for the year are included in the price. Seven Oaks Pet Hospital also offers the latest technology with laparoscopic spays and anesthesia-free dental cleanings. Also available are emergency care and even

house calls, traditional spays and neutering, on-site x-rays, vaccines (including the canine influenza vaccine), scalpel-less radiowave surgery, microchipping and nutritional counseling. Taking The Orangetheory Fitness Challenge Is...Challenging! By Gary Nager I can’t yet guarantee you that the 60-minute group personal training workouts at Orangetheory Fitness (located off Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in New Tampa, next to Cold Stone Creamery and Starbucks) will deliver the best possible results of any gym or personal training studio. What I can tell you is that the workouts are definitely intense, unique and even fun. Although I have been working out consistently the last four+ years and have kept off most of the nearly 50 lbs. I lost, I have to admit that I hadn’t been as motivated the last few months to really give my all in my workouts. To that end, I signed up for Orangetheory’s six-week Ultimate Fitness Challenge — not so much to try to win the $2,500 top prize — but to see if I liked the facility, the workout, the trainers and yes, to get back my motivation to lose back the last 15-20 lbs. Motivation, energy and heart rate are the big buzz words at Orangetheory. Each of the no more than 24 people in each class is given a personal heart rate monitor and the workout nearly always begins with 26 minutes on the treadmill, although there is both a stationary bike and a unique elliptical machine called a “strider” for those

who can’t do a hard 26 minutes (walking or running) on the treadmill. During that 26 minutes, the trainers have you establish a “base” pace that should get your heart up to the “green” zone (as shown on big-screen TVs), or between 75-85 percent of your maximum heart rate (based on your age). They then include one- or two-minute intervals of “pushing” and “all out” paces designed to get your heart rate up to and to stay in the “orange” zone (85-95 percent of your maximum) and, eventually, into the “red” zone (95 percent and above of At Orangetheory Fitness on Bruce B. Apartment Complex Set To Open In New Tampa In October Future New Tampa residents are signing leases at the Colonial Grand at Hampton Preserve apartment complex, where construction is chugging along right on schedule. The high end, townhouse-style apartments, located off Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and Trout Creek Dr. (near the new Sweetbay supermarket), is set to open in the fall. The complex will fill 67 acres of previously undeveloped land a half-mile south of County Line Rd. Colonial Grand’s regional VP Diane Gilmore says that families and individuals already are coming onboard to live in the brand new community, which will feature the comforts of luxury living, while enjoying a “Go Green” lifestyle. Residents will begin moving into the complex on Monday, October 17, where they are welcome to use the oversized workout facility, poolside cabanas with WiFi, as well as participate in the community events that Hampton Preserve plans on hosting every week. Colonial Grand has invested $53.8 million into the New Tampa area, and will open with opportune timing, as Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, located a couple of miles north on BBD, nears its unveiling in 2012. “There are no other apartment complexes being built in the (New

Tampa) area right now,” says Gilmore. The 486 lease-only apartments at Hampton Preserve will be available in 1, 2 or 3 bedroom units. Garages will be available for many of the 2- and 3bedroom units, and special “Gourmet Units” are available to guests who enjoy the lavishness of wine racks and chillers to accompany their gourmet-inspired kitchens, ten-percent of the apartments will feature those and other luxuries, management said. All 31 buildings and 17 floor plans at Hampton Preserve have been certified by the National Home Builders Association (NHBA) with a Green Building Standard certification. Gilmore says the complex is going to encourage many aspects of “Going Green,” including giving its residents the option of living in a smoke-free building, an option that its sister community, Colonial Grand at Seven Oaks, and most other complexes do not have. “Energy-saving appliances, lowwatt light bulbs, paperless bills, and the choice of signing an ‘E-Lease’ are all a part of our efforts to ‘go green,’” Gilmore says. Rents fluctuates with the size and features of the apartments. The units range from 682-1,468 sq. feet, and Gilmore says they are reasonably priced

for the value residents receive, including views of the backwoods wildlife, the resort-style pool and the wild flower garden, which was designed to keep the stomachs of the local deer population happy while looking pleasant to residents. The Colonial Grand at Hampton Preserve apartment complex is a sister community to Colonial Grand at Seven Oaks. Topash Painting: Still Keeping Our Area’s Homes Beautiful! By Sheryl Young K.T. Topash grew up in paint. The painting business, that is. K.T. worked in the family business with his father, Paul, for 16 years, and has now owned the Wesley Chapel-based Topash Painting for the past three. “It’s always been a family business,” says K.T. “My dad considered me (to be) his partner. Since he handed the business on to me, I’m already bringing my son Cole in, and my wife Hollie does our bookkeeping.” Topash Painting specializes in interior and exterior home and commercial painting. Sometimes, Cole, age 10, accompanies K.T. to job sites. Despite the shaky economy, or perhaps, at least in part, because of it, K.T. says he is being kept very busy with painting jobs. “Oh yes, the bulk of my business is coming from (home) re-painting,” he explains. “Many people aren’t moving, so they’re deciding to re-vamp their houses, inside and out, either the same color for freshness, or changing the colors of their rooms. Paint is the least expensive way to give your home a totally new look.” Although K.T. says his favorite job is still exterior painting, he adds that

18

no job is too small for him. He’ll do an interior job that could take a week or more, or he’ll come out to paint a front door that might have complicated trim work. He and Hollie also stay up on the latest paint trends, so he can advise his clients about today’s best color choices and even impart some décor intuition. And, since Topash Painting is a mobile business, K.T. uses a trailer as an “office on wheels.” “My trailer is my office, my rolling workshop, that I travel in,” he says. “I have every possible needed sample and tool on board.” K.T. does all of the work on his jobs himself, beginning with a free estimate. He’ll work with other contractors that need to be on the property at the same time, like floor installers or cabinetry companies. He will also use environmentally friendly “green” paints upon request. He explains that environmentally friendly paints means those with “low to-zero VOCs,” with the initials standing for “Volatile Organic Compounds.” VOCs may include chemicals that sometimes cause low-level toxins to be released into the air that can irritate allergies, or cause gas emissions now known as harmful to the environment. At one time, lead was the

(L. to r.) Holly, Cole and K.T. Topash of Topash Painting. biggest health hazard in paint, but although that’s been removed from most products, traditional paints may still contain some VOC-producing chemicals. K.T. is savvy in which paint companies are now producing low to zero VOC paint lines, including low-odor paints for those who are fragrance-sensitive. He warns, though, that because some essential elements might be removed from this type of paint, it may not last as long. Speaking of how your paint job can last, when it comes to updating and maintaining the appearance of your home, K.T. is quick to share some valuable advice. “On average, exterior paint lasts seven years,” he says. “The best thing a

homeowner can do to preserve their exterior paint is power-wash the house every 12-18 months. It will protect against mold and mildew. And, it won’t wash off the paint – it will keep it fresher and easier to paint the next time. The worse a house needs painting, the more chances there are that water can seep past the exterior and into the house.” K.T. also can do your power-washing before painting. So what are some of the latest interior paint trends? “People who don’t like really shiny walls in their bathrooms and kitchens are discovering that a satin or eggshell finish cleans just as well as a semi-gloss,” K.T. says. “And, accent walls are still popular. But, if you’re staying in the same color group as the other three walls, choose

a shade more than one shade away from the first color, or it will just look like a shadow.”

How To Hire A Painter

For the occasional unavoidable schedule clash, K.T. will hire or recommend other painters he knows and trusts to do the work. So, here are some of his tips on how to find a good painter: • Ask friends and neighbors about painters they’ve used. • A reputable painter will be known to area stores. Mention any painter you are considering at your local hardware or home supply store to see if they are known there. • A clean vehicle indicates a neat painter who takes pride in his or her work. Observe the vehicle he or she arrives in when they come to do the estimate. • You shouldn’t be asked to buy your own paint before the job. • Another warning sign is if the person doesn’t return your calls in a timely manner. • They must be able to show they are licensed, bonded and insured in your county.

On Being Self-Employed

K.T. says he is thankful to be an independent business owner in a time when so many people are losing their

jobs. He gets much of his work from repeat customers and their referrals, but wants to thank the Neighborhood News for the exposure he’s received that’s brought him many new clients over the years. In fact, K.T. wants readers to know that he periodically runs specials in this publication, so keep your eyes open for those specials. John and Shannon Triplett were impressed by K.T., from when they first spoke to him about painting the exterior of their home — and even moreso after the painting was completed. “K.T. did a great job,” John says. “Several days before the painting, he came out and power-washed the house, as well as the sidewalk and driveway. On the day he painted, I went to work, came home and he already was done. Besides, the house looked great and everything was left spotlessly clean.” The Tripletts say they already have called K.T. back for another job. “We’re having him do the interior now,” John adds. “I hate to paint!” K.T. Green Rangers & FL Waterworks Create Beautiful Landscapes Together By Camille Gillies If you’e a New Tampa or Wesley Chapel-area homeowner, you know how challenging it is to keep your lawn looking lush and lovely. For many of us, it’s nearly impossible unless you have a background in horticulture or enlist some professional help. The weeds, the pests, the stressed-out grass, the list of annoyances goes on and on. That’s why it’s so important to hire experienced pest control, lawn care and irrigation specialists. If you’re still looking for top-notch lawn care and/or pest control, two area businesses have teamed up to tackle your lawn maintenance headaches. Although not officially partners, and each owning his own business, friends Charlie Wolfle and Frank Lauria have been working in tandem for the past five years to provide their customers with the best landscape service possible. Charlie owns Green Rangers, a full-service lawn care and pest control company, and Frank owns FL Waterworks, specialists in irrigation. Together, they can establish a landscape design from inception to completion, and provide the maintenance necessary to keep it green and healthy for the long term. “If I notice chinch bugs, grubs or

20

worms at one of my customer’s properties, I refer them to Charlie,” says Frank. “If he sees dying grass at one of his customer’s homes and knows it’s not caused by a pest problem, he refers them to me. Many times the grass is suffering because there is an area that isn’t being irrigated properly and I can fix that for them.”

FL Waterworks

Located in Tampa, FL Waterworks serves customers in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. A licensed irrigation contractor, Frank offers services that include installation and redesign of irrigation systems, general sprinkler system repair, valve repair, wire tracking and fault finding. The Tampa native started the company five years ago, after working for Walt DisneyWorld in Lake Buena Vista, where he spent a year maintaining the extensive irrigation systems throughout the Disney theme park system. He says honesty and integrity are the hallmarks of FL Waterworks. “A lot of irrigation contractors cut corners by using inferior products,” he comments. “I use only real irrigation wire and quality parts and equipment. I pride myself on quality workmanship and I always strive to save money for my customers.”

One way he watches each customer’s dollar is by monitoring the amount of time a system is running to make sure it is working efficiently. “You can water your grass too much, and then you are just wasting water and stuck with a big utility bill,” Frank explains, adding that he is very conscientious about water usage and conservation. His customers include both residential and commercial accounts, such Frank Lauria (left) owns FL Waterworks, as office complexes and the common an irrigation company and his friend areas of large communities. and was looking for someone to do my lawn and shrub care,” Chuck recalls. “I hired Charlie and he’s been doing my lawn ever since.” Chuck says he appreciates Charlie’s attention to detail, as well as his accessibility and fair pricing. “He’s a good fellow to do business with, very straight forward,” says Chuck. “He surveys my property and tells me what needs to be done, but he also tells me if something can be done at a later time.” The company also believes in offering flexible lawn maintenance programs to suit a variety of needs. “We have several programs to fit people’s budgets,” Charlie comments. “We also offer free analysis and complimentary service calls.” Pest control can be contracted for as little as six months at a time and mowing contracts are yearly, with mowing services performed every week from April through October and every other week from November through March. For his New Tampa-area clients, Charlie says that he is prepared for the new government-mandated restrictions on nitrogen that the Tampa City Council passed on June 23. The new ordinance, which goes into effect in 2012, bans the sale of nitrogen-packed fertilizer between June 1 and Sept. 30 and also prohibits residents from putting it on their lawns and gardens. Charlie says

that he already has been employing other fertilizing alternatives for the last three years. “I have been using iron and a variety of micronutrients for several years now,” he says, so the ban won‘t have a significant impact on his customers. Pasco County has yet to implement any kind of nitrogen-packed fertilizer ban, but if they do, Charlie will be equipped to comply with any new regulation. In addition to pest control expertise and full-service lawn care, Green Rangers also features landscape design services. Charlie attended Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, NY, where he studied landscape design. “My father and uncles were all in the landscaping business in New York,” he notes. “With my background and years of experience, I am able to plan and install a customer’s landscaping and then care for it in all respects, from fertilizing and mowing to applying the pest control treatments.” The area he doesn’t specialize in — irrigation — is Frank’s specialty, which makes for a friendly reciprocal arrangement between Green Rangers and Fl Waterworks. For a free lawn analysis or more information about Green Rangers, call 949-9994. For irrigation services, call FL Waterworks at 239-7345 or visit FlWaterWorksIrrigation.com.

“Frog Girl” Continued from page 1 in her backyard, kayaking around Florida state parks or making temporary homes for feral toads next to her family’s compost pile, she spends her time studying for her home-school AP Biology class (a course usually reserved for 10th graders), learning Spanish and working for Friendly Water. She says learning Spanish will help her communicate with locals when she travels to Honduras in January, where she will spend several days with herpetologists to study frogs and snakes. George Heinrich, a biologist and wildlife educator in Pinellas County, meets with Avalon nearly every week to study the animals that live in rivers around the area. “She is an excellent student,” says Heinrich. “She is just so excited about learning new things. I wish all of my students had that same excitement.” In addition to all of her environmental activities, Avalon keeps busy by running her own business, which she oversees online and takes abroad to different events. Selling homemade crafts from vendor booths, she sells magnets, necklaces and keychains with her own artwork designs. And, instead of stuffing the cash she collects into her piggybank, she donates it to either the Camp

22

Bayouu Outdoor Learning Center (a Tampa-area preserve) or to SaveTheFrogs.com. “All I ever want is peace and love, which you cannot buy,” said Avalon when she was awarded her Student of the Week award. “By giving the profits away, I can help many other people.” To learn more about Avalon Theisen and her achievements, you can visit her website at ConserveItForward.com where you can watch videos and photo galleries of her handling amphibians and reptiles. Wesley Chapel’s Byron Capehart Wins Aviation Scholarship By Sean Bowes When a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presents itself, the wise thing to is take it. That is what Byron Capehart’s mother, Martha, told her son when he was offered the chance to attend the “Destination Aviation” flight school summer camp in Lakeland at the Sun n’ Fun airfield, which is home to the Florida Air Museum. Byron, a 15-year-old sophomore at Wesley Chapel High, was chosen, along with four other high school students from Pasco County, to study subjects like math, science and technology to hone their skills for possible careers in the fields of aviation, aerospace or engineering. Byron and the other Pasco County students chosen were awarded their scholarships by the Florida Air Museum, which annually presents the gift of flight school scholarships to local students who are participants in the Pasco Education Foundation’s “Take Stock in Children” program. “Take Stock” is an award-winning program that provides mentors, educational scholarships and hope for Pasco County’s low-income and at-risk youth. The program uses volunteermentors to help its mission of breaking

“Take Stock” students to attend “Destination Aviation.” According to Florida Air Museum director Ernest Sanborn, the cost is well worth it. “Every year, we have had a great group of kids come here to fly,” Sanborn says. “Teaching the kids how to fly matures them. It gives them a certain type of quiet self-confidence that they didn’t have before.” At the airfield in Lakeland, students learn about all of the gauges and controls inside an aircraft during the flight school, so that when it comes time fly the plane, they are comfortable at the yoke. All of the students also had the unique experience of taking a night flight over Pasco County with a flight instructor, which aside from flying the Piper Cadet themselves, is one of the big highlights for the week-long camp. Sanborn says the Destination Aviation program teaches the students to embrace the Aviators Creed: “I will treat this earth and sky as I would others: With respect and dignity.” For more information on programs and flight schools at the Lakeland Sun n’ Fun Airfield, call the Florida Air Museum at (863) 644-2431 or visit the airfield located at 4175 Medulla Rd., Lakeland.

‘Projects Of Pasco’ Hands Out Supplies For The New School Year School shopping is not only physically draining, it can be a financial drain as well. For some families in the Wesley Chapel area, the burden of buying new school supplies can mean deciding between the amount of groceries for the week and the new backpack that their child needs for the new school year. Luckily, there was a helping hand this year for students from low-income families, and/or those who qualify for Pasco’s free or reduced lunch program. “Projects of Pasco” is a non-profit organization that operates primarily in eastern Pasco County and has been running this free school supplies event for the last seven years. The organization’s mission is to help provide students with all the necessary school supplies rom kindergarten to high school. This year, dozens of volunteers, including the cheerleading team from Wesley Chapel High and Boy Scout Troop #177, got together at Wesley Chapel Elementary on August 13 to hand out hundreds of backpacks, tens of thousands of pens and pencils, bottles of glue, notebook paper, folders, binders and more. “We have everything here that you could find at a Wal-Mart or school supplies store,” said Fulk. “Everything

24

except the cash register.” According to Fulk, she purposely designed the school supplies drive to mirror the aisles of a school supplies store – she wants the parents to be able to pick and choose which supplies they think their child would want to use at school, rather than just handing them a bag pre-packed with an assortment of supplies. The idea behind the drive is for it not to feel like a charity, she said. “I found everything I needed today,” said a parent of a Wesley Chapel Elementary student. “I feel blessed.” More than 1,150 parents pre-registered for this year’s school supplies drive to receive some of the $11,000 worth of supplies. “Projects of Pasco” receives donations from local businesses and individuals every year. According to Fulk, the VFW in Zephyrhills, the New York Yankees and Verizon Wireless annually donate thousands of dollars to the organization. Metro Storage on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel donates its largest air-conditioned storage space for Projects of Pasco to collect school supplies year-round. For additional information about how to make a donation to the “Projects of Pasco,” call Anna Fulk at 738-3038. — Sean Bowes

Most Wesley Chapel Schools Earn ‘A’ Or ‘B’ Grades This Year The grades for Florida’s public elementary and middle schools are in, and parents of who attend school in Wesley Chapel should be happy to know that almost all of our area’s schools met, or exceeded the county’s overall grade of a “B.” In fact, Pasco County as a whole received a grade of 520, just five points short of earning an “A.” New River Elementary was the only school in the Wesley Chapel area to drop to a “C” grade, although, principal Lynn Pabst remains confident that the school will rise back to an “A” or “B” next school year. “We’re going to focus on the students who need more attention,” said Pabst, “We’re making big changes and we are going to drive to the top.” Wesley Chapel’s elementary and middle school grades are listed below. High school grades have not yet been released, as the Florida Department of Education is still tallying graduation rates, which effect high school’s grades. Elementary Schools: Double Branch Elementary (Current enrollment: 810; principal: Peggy

Lewis) – Grade B New River Elementary (585; principal: Lynn Pabst) – Grade C Quail Hollow Elementary (405; principal: Michelle Berger) – Grade B Sand Pine Elementary (650; principal: Todd Cluff) – Grade A Seven Oaks Elementary (900; principal: B.J. Uncle Bo’s Smokin’ BBQ — Wesley Chapel’s Roadside Secret! By Gary Nager I have only know Ace “Uncle Bo” Jenkins for a few months, but not only he is a friendly and genuine guy, he also serves some of the best BBQ I’m almost certain you haven’t yet tried...that is, unless you’ve driven by his roadside stand on S.R. 54 less than a half-mile east of the northernmost entrance to Meadow Pointe. Ace keeps his smoker working its magic on the road every day (yes, on Sundays, too), noon-8 p.m., pumping that delicious wood-smoked aroma and plumes of smoke rising into the air in order to attract hungry drivers on their way to lunch or on their way home from work. “The smoke and the aroma are what draws them in,” he admits. “Then, it’s up to me to keep ‘em coming back for more with great food at a great price.” And man, does he ever deliver. I’ve mentioned in previous stories that I’m not the biggest BBQ fan in the world, but I particularly love Uncle Bo’s meaty pork ribs and sliced beef brisket, which are cooked and smoked without sauce and then served just drizzled with his awesome homemade slightly-sweet, slightly-spicy sauce. If you need extra sauce, he’s happy to oblige, but I, for one, appreciate that he doesn’t try to drown his delicious food in sauce. And, you can’t beat the price,

Whether you crave tasty, meaty pork ribs (left) or a yummy pulled pork sandwich, Uncle Bo’s Smokin’ BBQ always serves your favorites with your choice of potato salad or his homemade baked beans and cole slaw. either. Three of those big ribs (or multiple slices of the beef brisket) and two sides cost just $9, or without sides, the cost is just $8. A full rack of ribs (14 bones) is just $27 and a halfrack (7 bones) will set you back $14. Also available from Uncle Bo (which is what his nieces call him) are smoked BBQ pork or chopped smoked sausage on a bun ($6) or his awesome daily chicken special of a leg quarter and two sides for just $5! You also can get a five-dinner family feast (the rib orders come with two bones each), with each dinner served with sides, for only $34. A la carte side dishes (the homemade baked beans and cole slaw are my faves; although

the potato salad is good, too) are just $1 apiece and you simply have to wash his delicious food down with a glass of his homemade sweet tea, which also costs just $1. Pepsi Cola products and bottled water also are available for just $1. In other words, you can’t get better food from a better guy at a better price. And, while Ace doesn’t have 20 years of restaurant experience, he does know what he’s doing and enjoys his customers as much as he enjoys the business. He notes that he got into the business by necessity, after his wife had suffered multiple strokes in 2009 and 2010 and he had to leave his full-time job to care for her.

Ace “Uncle Bo” Jenkins is waiting to serve you on S.R. 54, just east of the entrance to Meadow Pointe. He originally was located on S.R. 54 on the other side of I-75, near Wesley Chapel Honda, but decided to move further down 54 last October, when the construction between I-75 and Curley Rd. cut his business in half. Trust me, it’s worth the trip! Uncle Bo’s Smokin’ BBQ is open every day, noon-8, on S.R. 54 just east of Meadow Pointe, next to Payless Homes. For more information, call Ace at 732-4136 and please tell him we sent you!

North Pole Ices Is Your Neighborhood Ice Cream Shop! If your family enjoys a delicious dessert after school, after a great meal or after anything, really, you should check out North Pole Ices in the Cross Creek Center plaza at the corner of Kinnan St. and Cross Creek Blvd., a couple of miles south of Wesley Chapel. The Lanigans — Kelly, Mike and their children Brittany, Anthony and baby Chloe — are (like yours truly) transplanted New Yawkas who have lived in New Tampa the last ten years. Mike, who has built homes in Cory Lake Isles and other local communities, decided it was time to try doing something different and several months ago, North Pole Ices was born. “We wanted to serve real New York Italian Ices and homemade ice cream,” Kelly says. “And, we’ve been told we have delicious ice cream and ices and very reasonable prices.” I would have to agree. Located across the street from two schools and the New Tampa Regional Library, and basically adjacent to the New Tampa Little League field complex, parents and kids in our area haven’t had any trouble finding North Pole Ices since it opened and I have to say that the ice cream is delicious. My favorite ice cream flavors to date (sprinkles are always free!) are the Bearfoot Brownie

28

and Chocolate Moose Tracks and one of the best deals in town are the large (for $3) and small ($2.50) Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookie sandwiches. I can even get my favorite traditional NYstyle black & white real milkshakes st North Pole Ices. My son Jake raves about the rainbow Italian ices and fresh fruit smoothies and you also can order hand-packed takeout pints and quarts. The only thing missing are the hot fudge sundaes and banana splits, but Kelly says they should be arriving soon, as are Nathan’s hot dogs, churros, pretzels and hot and frozen coffee drinks. And, if you mention this story when you visit, you can buy any item up to $4 and get one item of equal or lesser value FREE! For more info including hours, call North Pole Ices (10008 Cross Creek Blvd.) at 428-6998. — GN
