DANGER ZONE

Benito Middle School parents and administrators are concerned about too many near-misses at Kinnan St. and Cross Creek Blvd. By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN Nearly a dozen Benito Middle School parents and teacher lined the roads that run by their children’s school last week with bright yellow signs blaring simple messages: Be Careful. Slow Down. Phones Down. Drive Like Your Kids Live Here. Teaming up with Vision Zero Hillsborough, the Benito parents hoped to shine a light on a growing problem in this congested section of New Tampa. About a month into the new school year, parents are saying the conditions in which their kids walk and bike to school are becoming more and more dangerous. With the school situated on the south side of busy Cross Creek Blvd., the tail end of the morning commute is made more difficult by hundreds of students walking and biking — with many of them having to cross the busy street — to get to Benito. While flashing lights are present along Cross Creek, notifying drivers that the speed limit is 20 miles per hour during the times students are walking to school, drivers leaving Kinnan St. and turning east or west onto Cross Creek don’t see those signs. The intersection is congested with those heading to work and parents trying to get into the car line to drop their children off at school. Because there are cars entering the Benito parking lot from both directions on Cross Creek, the entrance can get backed up, leaving drivers trying to cross over from Kinnan St. to have to wait an extra light cycle, sometimes two. That can lead to bad decisions by drivers

who are in a hurry, while also creating backups in both directions along Cross Creek Blvd. The most sometimes-heart-stopping concern, Benito principal John Sanders says, results from drivers leaving Kinnan Street and making a left onto Cross Creek heading east. “Kids are in that crosswalk while cars are turning,” says Sanders. “The cars go right in front of them or right behind them — by feet and sometimes inches.” The problem is that when the crosswalk light is green, giving the pedestrians the right of way to cross the street, drivers making a left onto Cross Creek also have the same green light. Legally, they have to yield to the pedestrians in the crosswalk, but it appears many drivers are acting as if they have a green arrow instead, and don’t notice or aren’t checking to

make sure that there aren’t pedestrians in (or entering) the crosswalk. “It’s not a safe crosswalk for students because of so much traffic coming from so many different directions, and people aren’t paying attention,” says Jenny Giraldo, whose daughter attends Benito. “Signage is lacking on so many levels, drivers aren’t really made aware. They need to be woken up.” Sanders adds that he is hopeful that changes will be made. On Friday, September 7(the day this issue hits mailboxes), a meeting is scheduled with representatives from the City of Tampa and the Hillsborough County School Board to discuss possible changes to lights and signs in the area. “I think that the light situation needs to change,” says Benito Parent Teacher Student

Association (PTSA) president Cindy Walton. “There needs to be no turn on red or the light for walking needs to be longer, while other lights aren’t green. It causes children to walk at the same time cars want to go, and cars don’t yield to pedestrians the way they should.” To address the cars not yielding to pedestrians — or not being aware of the situation — the PTSA invited Vision Zero Hillsborough to hold the rally along Cross Creek Blvd. during the morning drop-off time on Aug. 31. The Vision Zero Action Plan was developed by the Hillsborough Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Policy Committee, and has organized similar efforts at other dangerous areas in Tampa, most recently Seminole Heights. “Vision Zero is an organization that is trying to eliminate traffic deaths,” Walton explains. “The event is to raise awareness that there are children, and drivers need to obey traffic laws, yield to pedestrians and slow down.” While the school administrators and PTSA are working to educate parents and students at the school, Walton says Vision Zero was brought in to bring awareness to those drivers who are not part of the school. “We knew we needed to reach out to the (entire) community, versus just our parents,” says Walton. “We need to have that awareness within our own community that students are walking along Cross Creek Blvd. and drivers need to watch out.” Sanders agrees that the issue needs to be addressed in multiple ways. “Part of it is educating the children who

The First New Tampa Brew Fest Is Coming — Saturday, November 10! An editorial by Gary Nager

So, as I mentioned in my last editorial, the first (annual?) New Tampa Brew Fest will be held at the Venetian Events Center (in front of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church) on Cross Creek Blvd. on Saturday, November 10, 6 p.m.-10 p.m. As someone who has been part of several different crews who have put on just about every one of the 20+ Tastes of New Tampa & Wesley Chapel since 1994, I can tell you first-hand that creating and hosting a major community event takes a lot of work That’s one of the big reasons why I am so proud that my “tiny but mighty” Rotary Club of New Tampa Noon (which meets Wednesdays for lunch at Mulligans Irish Pub in the Pebble Creek Golf Club; see separate story on page 4 of this issue) is the group that is fully gearing up for a New Tampa food-&-beverage event that actually will be held in New Tampa! The Brew Fest was the brainchild of our club’s immediate past president, Belvai (aka Vinnie) Kudva, who led a group of our fellow club members to check out the recent Temple Terrace Brew Fest, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Temple Terrace. That was only a few months ago, and since then, others in the club have taken the bull by the horns and — even though the first New Tampa Brew Fest is today only a couple of months away — I can tell you that this thing is going to be really cool...and BIG! Club member Jeff Ulbrich, who says he enjoys a good craft beer himself, has gotten both of the largest beer distributors in the Tampa Bay area — Pepin Distributing and J.J. Taylor Distributing Florida — on board, which means that although we currently “only” have about 7 independent breweries and 40+ craft beers from Pepin or J.J. Taylor, there surely will be more — lots more — on the way. Jeff’s goal is to end up at around 100 different beers

to sample and the way he’s gotten started, I wouldn’t put it past him. Also hitting the ground running to promote the Brew Fest has been our club’s social media director and do-everything marketing whiz (and future president) Lisa Hickey. Lisa lives in Lakeland, but was looking for a club with a family feel and we are so thrilled that she found and chose our little 20-member “family.” Lisa has created a “New Tampa Brew Fest” Facebook page, as well as a website — NewTampaBrewFest.com, which she has been updating every time a new independent brewery or sponsor signs up (so go check them all out!). There’s also links to purchase your tickets at both of those online locations. Speaking of sponsors, local orthodontist Dr. Steven Dau is heading up our club’s sponsorship committee for the event, despite the fact he and his wife had their first baby less than a year ago. So far, we already have Kling Tampa Insurance Law as our presenting sponsor (Lisa brought them on board) and other major sponsors include Reeves Import Motorcars, Florida Hospital Center Ice, DPrint Graphic Communications Worldwide, AdenVision, Pepin, J.J. Taylor and the New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News & WCNTtv are the event’s primary media sponsors. On page 46 of this issue, there’s even a new ad thanking the sponsors we already have, but we’re still looking for more! I am helping Dr. Dau with sponsorships, so you can always call our office at (813) 910-2575 if you want to sign up to be a sponsor if or you have questions. One of the really cool things about sponsoring the first New Tampa Brew Fest — whether you come in at our lowest $500 “Celeb Level” or a $2,500 “Platinum Level” sponsorship — is that you can bring your own “celebrity pourers” to help us serve the brews. In addition, all sponsor logos will be shown on the event Jumbotron throughout the four hours, and you’ll also receive a table sign with your company’s name, as well as being listed on our Brew Fest website and Facebook page. Purchase at least a $1,000 “Gold Level” sponsorship and you’ll also have your logo placed on our event Program Guide, on our event signage and on all print advertising for the event. If you bump up to the $2,500 “Platinum Level” sponsorship, you also will receive your logo printed on 200 Brew Fest shirts and on a large entrance banner, and more. Look for updates in these pages and on WCNT-tv (we just released the first such video last week), but most of all, go online and buy your tickets today! For those ages 21 & over who will be imbibing, the cost is just $35, plus a $4.01 Eventbrite fee, or $20, plus a $3.16 Eventbrite fee, for designated drivers. Kling Law

also is sponsoring free Uber rides so you can get home safely! Please note that this event is not intended for children and no one under age 18 will be admitted. And of course, you have to be 21, with ID, to sample any or all of the brews! We’ll also have Tampa’s best food trucks (although specifically which food trucks has not yet been determined), as well as live entertainment. We expect to sell out — we’re limiting this first Brew Fest to the first 1,000 people who buy tickets, so don’t wait to purchase your tickets at a higher price! Buy your tickets now and receive the online prepaid discount. For tickets & more info about the New Tampa Brew Fest, visit Eventbrite.com/47193304444.

Fore! Pebble Creek Golf Club Owner Says Listing Was A Mistake By John C. Cotey Like so many rumors, it started on the internet — that the Pebble Creek Golf Club (PCGC) was up for sale. So we asked Bill Place, who has owned the club since 2005. “It’s not up for sale,” he says. But, according to land brokers Cushman & Wakefield, it is indeed up for sale, and is listed on the firm’s website. The extensive listing touts the 12 existing lakes, homes in Pebble Creek that are selling “in the mid-$200,000s to upper-$300,000s,” an average household income within a threemile radius of $106,179 and the 3,189,266 square feet of retail within a three-mile radius of the semi-private golf course. Included is a marketing flyer, water and sewage map, a zoning site plan, Pebble Creek’s declaration of covenants and restrictions (dated While Mulligan’s Pub remains a popular spot at the Pebble Creek Golf Club, fewer and fewer people Sept. 2, 1986) and a unit count calculation that are joining the semi-private club to play golf, leading owner Bill Place to consider all possible options. says 840 apartment and townhome units are (Photo: Gavin Olsen). potentially feasible to replace the golf course. need more people to play golf. Pebble Creek has to compete with private country clubs like Hunter’s Green and Tampa Palms, as well as semi-private Heritage Isles, which are all a short drive away. That leaves a lot of land — in Pebble Creek’s case, 149 acres worth of it — that potentially has more value to him in the hands of developers. Place is well aware that a few miles north in Wesley Chapel, where it took almost two years of public hearings and government meetings, struggling Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club is now being razed by its owners to make room for 400 homes. “Even if I assumed the best case and some builder wanted to pay for it, with all the rezoning and public hearings and battles, it may not even be possible here,” Place says. “It certainly was for Quail Hollow.” Place and wife Su Lee own the company, Ace Golf, that owns Pebble Creek Golf Club, and three other golf courses, along with two driving ranges in Brandon and Riverview. Two years ago, Ace Golf bought Plantation Palms Golf Club in Land O’Lakes, which had been closed for two years. Ace Golf also owns the Wentworth and Crescent Oaks golf clubs in Tarpon Springs. He says he has had numerous offers to sell Pebble Creek Golf Club over the years, but nothing concrete, and that’s where it stands now. But, he knows the rumor is out there. His hope is that it doesn’t hurt business, including at the popular Mulligans Irish Pub inside PCGC, and that the golf club itself can rebound. “It’s just crazy that we’ve had people walk in and say ‘When are you closing?,’” Place says. “We may never close.”

Familiar & Some Fresh Faces Make Their Marks In Primary Elections By JOHN COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Two faces quite familiar to New Tampa voters — Republican Hillsborough County commissioners s Ken Hagan and Victor Crist — both easily won their primary elections Aug. 28, officially kicking off campaigns which, if successful, would result in them exchanging seats on the Hillsborough County Bard of County Commissioners. Meanwhile, Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum pulled off a shocker statewide that reverberated nationally. Gillum shocked almost everyone with a win in Florida’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, to set up a showdown with Donald Trump-endorsed Republican Ron DeSantis to replace Rick Scott as Florida’s governor. Both gubernatorial candidates defeated establishment-backed candidates, setting the stage for an interesting fall battle that will match contenders from what many believe to be the party’s bases. With his victory, Gillum, a progressive candidate backed by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, becomes Florida’s first black gubernatorial candidate, after he defeated favored Gwen Graham, the daughter of popular former Florida governor and U.S. senator Bob Graham. Although he was fourth in many polls leading up to the primary vote and was outspent by Graham $13 million to $2.5 million, there was talk of a Gillum surge in the final days, which turned out to be prescient. Gillum captured 34.3 percent of the statewide Democratic vote (or 517,834 votes of the 1,509,794 cast). Graham finished second with 31.3 percent, while Phillip Levine (20.3

percent) and Jeff Greene (10 percent) rounded out the top candidates in the Democratic field. “People didn’t think we had a chance, but we did,” Gillum told CNN shortly after being declared the winner. “I think voters have had enough with the status quo.” DeSantis, first elected to Congress in 2012, represents the Daytona Beach area and originally ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016, when it appeared that Marco Rubio, coming off an unsuccessful presidential campaign, was not going to run. Once Rubio re-entered the Senate race, DeSantis exited. Running behind former Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam at the time, DeSantis fully embraced an endorsement from President Trump in the spring and it shot him into a lead he never relinquished. DeSantis was the choice of 913,955 Republican voters out of 1,618,372 who cast ballots in the primary, or 56.4 percent. Putnam was a distant second with 36.5 percent. President Trump congratulated DeSantis on the win the night of the primaries, and the next morning, he attacked Gillum, calling him DeSantis’ “biggest dream…a failed Socialist Mayor named Andrew Gillum who has allowed crime and & other problems to flourish in his city.” In New Tampa’s voting precincts, DeSantis beat Putnam by a smaller but still decisive 50-43 percent margin. Putnam won only three precincts — 357 and 358 in Tampa Palms, and 671, which primarily encompasses Pebble Creek — but only by a combined 13 votes. Gillum was much more popular in New Tampa than in the state in general, winning 45 percent of the vote in our precincts to just

32 percent for Graham. In votes cast just for Gillum or Graham, Gillum was the choice 58 percent of the time. Locally, Hagan, a former New Tampa resident now residing in Carrollwood who previously served in New Tampa’s District 2 before being elected to represent countywide District 5, defeated Chris Paradies 72.4 percent to 27.6 percent in the Republican primary race for the District 2 seat. Currently the longest current serving county commissioner, Hagan has raised $485,574 and barely touched his warchest to beat Paradies, spending $98,773 (which is almost twice as much as Paradies and Hagan’s November 6 opponent, Democrat Angela Birdsong, have raised combined). Birdsong was the only Democrat to file for District 2, which is currently the seat held by Comm. Crist. Crist is running for Hagan’s soon-to-bevacated District 5 seat (both are term-limited out of their current positions), and defeated Angel S. Urbina Capo for the Republican nomination with 81 percent of the vote. Crist’s Democratic opponent in November is expected to pose a much stiffer challenge. Mariella Smith, a local businesswoman, is a first-time Democratic candidate but has the backing of U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor and other state Democratic leaders. Smith garnered 83 percent of the ballots cast, or 77,228 votes, to 15,904 for her opponent in the primary, Elvin Piggott. She has shown the kind of fund-raising prowess that could help her overcome Crist’s money and name recognition, with $81,423 raised and just 14,007.14 spent.

Crist has raised $129,080 but has spent $88,814. “When I fund-raise, I do it to benefit the nonprofit organizations I support (like the University Area Community Center),” Crist said. “I don’t spend any time fund-raising for my campaign.” In District 7, another countywide seat currently held by outgoing commissioner Al Higginbotham, Todd Marks defeated Aakash Patel in a bitterly fought Republican primary. Patel spent more than $400,000 trying to the win the nomination, and boasted endorsements from Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, State House Speaker Richard Corcoran, former Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford and U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis. However, Marks, who spent only about a third of what Patel did, picked up 68 percent of the vote in a surprisingly decisive win. Marks will face Democrat Kimberly Overman for the District 7 seat in the fall. Overman, a financial planner, took 47 percent of the vote in a four-person field, finishing well ahead of second-place Sky White, who had 20 percent. In Hillsborough School Board elections, New Tampa’s District 3 seat, currently held by Cindy Stuart, was not on the ballot this year, but a countywide seat in District 6 (to replace April Griffin) was up for grabs, as a field of six candidates battled, with Henry “Shake” Washington (32.7 percent) and Karen Perez (28 percent) advancing to a November runoff. In what will be another hotly-contested local race on Nov. 6, District 63 State Rep. Shawn Harrison, a Republican, will try to hold onto his seat against Democrat candidate Fentrice Driskell. Neither candidate faced a primary opponent on Aug. 28..

It’s easy to recognize the progress being made on the widening of Segment D of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. (above). The final phase of the BBD widening is expected to be completed before the end of 2018.

BBD Update — Done By End Of Year! By JOHN COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com The seemingly never-ending widening of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., a project talked about and debated — and even cursed — for two decades, could be “substantially” finished by the end of October 2018. While the mounds of dirt, yellow construction trucks working behind orange traffic barrels and the winding roads with sometimes confusing lane switches seem to contradict that claim, Hillsborough County’s Public Works Department says that all eight lanes of Segment D — the last of the four segments of the BBD project — will be operational in October. That doesn’t preclude periodic daytime lane closures, as contractors complete punch list items, but the end, thankfully, is finally near. The final full completion of the segment is scheduled for sometime in November. The widening of Segment D — a 1.44mile stretch from Pebble Creek Dr. to County Line Rd. — from a 4-lane divided roadway to an 8-lane divided roadway also will include a landscaped median, sidewalks, a multi-use path and upgraded traffic signals. The final segment of BBD widening began construction in October of 2016. According to the county’s website, Segment D’s cost was estimated at $24 million, which was funded through the Public Works Transportation Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and was awarded $5 million from the Transportation Regional Incentive Program (TRIP) by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Segment A, which was once the most congested area of BBD and extends from Bearss Ave. to Palm Springs Blvd. in Tampa Palms, was a $54-million project that wrapped up last year. Segments B and C, which bracket the work that was done around the same time I-75 was widened, were considered the most difficult (and costly) of the segments geographically, but were completed together first. The two inside southbound lanes of Segment D have been completed, and plans were to finish the two outside northbound lanes, and then shift traffic by the end of August. When the traffic shift has been completed, work will begin to complete the two inside turn lanes, as well as the median northbound and southbound. As we reported last issue, county engi8

neers recently showed results of a signal-timing project they say has improved traffic on BBD (and its side roads) south of Cross Creek Blvd., and said when the construction is done, some of those same signal-timing improvements will be applied to Segment D. Also, a new traffic signal has been added at the intersection of BBDs and Trout Creek Dr. (just north of the Burger 21) in an effort to alleviate congestion off the side roads in that area. That signal was not yet operational at our press time. While residents have complained about perceived inactivity on BBD at most of the traffic-related townhalls and forums held in New Tampa the past year, all of the previous segments had their own challenges. The completion of Segment D has had to overcome some construction and weather issues that have delayed progress at times. Last year, Hurricane Irma (and other lesser storms) dumped enormous amounts of rain on the New Tampa area, and the usual summer-time showers this year also have provided some delays. “The toughest aspects of the project so far have been the weather impacts,” wrote the county’s Public Works Department, responding to questions from the Neighborhood News. “All construction projects must utilize temporary drainage measures to address the rain. This project is unique because the installation of the main drainage line must connect to the adjacent drainage lines on the south end of the project first, to allow the entire project to drain properly.” While the Segment D project is designed with the temporary drainage measures in place to handle the rain, “unusually quick and heavy” rains can overwhelm the drainage system, making it unable to drain the water from the roadway and causing backups. The project also has faced obstacles like locating underground utilities, which in most cases can be traced as a straight line, but there are unexpected deviations that required a redesign. “When coordinating multiple utility companies to install, relocate, and remove, it is challenging, especially when the majority of this work is completed by other companies all trying to fit in narrow areas,” the county says. But, the delays haven’t been enough to change the much-anticipated completion date, which remains the end of 2018. The end of a two-decades-long wait draws ever closer.

Respect. Resolve. Results for New Tampa!

are walking to do everything in their power and control to keep themselves safe at that intersection,” he says. “Some of them are crossing in the crosswalk, assuming that they’re safe, and they’re not.” To drivers — both those parents in the car line and those who are just trying to get to work through the mess of traffic, Sanders makes this plea: “Please exercise patience,” he says. “Especially from about 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., exercise extreme caution in the area. Please, if you’re turning left onto Cross Creek from Kinnan, be aware that green light happens while kids are in the crosswalk.”

No Major Incidents…Yet

According to the City of Tampa Police Department (TPD), since school started on Aug. 10, there has been just one minor accident between a student and a driver, which happened the morning of Aug. 16. An eastbound vehicle turning right into Benito off of Cross Creek didn’t stop for a red light and struck a bicycle with the front bumper of the car. Fortunately, the student was able to attend school that day. Eddy Durkin, a spokesperson for the TPD, says officers initiated 17 traffic stops —including 15 during school hours — at either the intersection of Cross Creek and Kinnan or directly in front of Benito that week. “We are hopeful that the balance of education and enforcement being provided regarding vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian safety will assist drivers, riders and

12

walkers in making good decisions,” he says. Parents are concerned that the next accident might not be so minor. Giraldo says she recently saw a terrifying incident at that intersection. A student crossing Cross Creek Blvd. in the crosswalk with a green “walk” signal had no idea that a large pickup truck was making a left-hand turn from Kinnan onto Cross Creek. The vehicle didn’t yield to the student in the crosswalk, and the student didn’t see the truck, as it was coming from behind her. Giraldo says she was sitting in her car at the intersection and that she saw a woman who happened to be in the intersection grab the child by her backpack and yank her out of the path of the oncoming truck. “It happened in a split second,” she says, “and it’s horrifying to think what would have happened if that woman hadn’t been standing there.” Walton and other parents are hopeful that drivers will change their bad habits to make getting to school safer for students. “Walking is good for them, riding their bike is exercise, and it’s good for them to be outside,” says Walton. “If traffic was aware and slowed down, and if traffic yielded to them, it would absolutely be safe for them to ride to school.”

Oakley’s Grille Sold Again & Other Tasty Local Business News By JOHN COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com

The day Heather Woodall signed the papers making her purchase of Oakley’s Grille official, her drive home that night to Haines City took more than two hours It turned out to be an ominous sign. Woodall confirmed last week that the long commute, combined with becoming a new mother, has made running a restaurant so far from home impossible, and Oakley’s has once again been sold. Located at 17631 Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., Oakley’s opened in 2011 in the old Quizno’s location (next to Supercuts) in the North Palms Village. Keith Oakley’s spot developed a strong following as one of the area’s hidden restaurant gems. APPROVED! Chick-Fil-A on S.R. 54, just east of Bruce B. Downs Blvd., the second Wesley Chapel location for the never-openon-Sunday-but-always-delicious chain received its final approval for the new location on July 27. While ground has been broken for a while, the constant sight of a dirt lot the past many months has been making a lot of people nervous, according to Facebook. In between the Walgreens and ChickFil-A, a new Wawa should soon be going vertical as well. The popular gas station and convenience store filed permit requests for the new location last month. And all of you Aldi fans can let out a sigh of relief. After moving planned locations twice, the discount supermarket chain has settled on the southeast corner of S.R. 56 and Wesley Chapel Blvd., west and in front of Costco and the project is currently under review.

Qvita Offers Both Medical & Cosmetic Services In One Location! By BRAD STAGER

Helping maintain optimal health on the inside and providing services to help you look better on the outside are the ways that Peggy Demetriou, ARNP, FNPBC, takes care of her patients at Qvita Health & Wellness, located across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), in the Windfair Professional Center. As a Board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP), Demetriou offers primary care medical services for patients ages five-years and older, including diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses like the flu and injuries, as well as referrals to specialists and follow-up management of chronic conditions such as diabetes. According to Demetriou, if one of her patients is ailing, she and her team (photo) are committed to seeing them as soon as possible to ensure a speedy recovery. “We’ll see our current patients the same day if they’re sick,” says Demetriou, who earned her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Nursing (BSN) degree in 1998, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “If they’re sick today, they’re going to be seen today.” Avoiding illness in the first place is ideal, and Qvita offers preventive care through wellness checkups (including school and Department of Transportation physicals) and health counseling focused on the individual needs of patients, such as enlightening a teenager about the nutritional benefits of a balanced diet or assisting adults with managing their

services beyond supporting daily health needs by providing non-surgical cosmetic options, including wrinkle-reducing injectables such as Botox and Xeomin, as well as a complete line of Juvederm filler products. Demetriou says that tne advantage of receiving cosmetic treatments and services at a nurse practitioner-owned clinic is the access to medical grade products such as Latisse, an FDA-approved prescription treatment that grows eyelashes for patients who are unhappy with the length or volume of their lashes. Skin-care products from companies such as Obagi Medical, SkinMedica and NeoCutis also are available. Patients looking for a non-surgical “face lift” can consider the Ultherapy approach, which is an FDA-approved method of lifting skin on areas such as the neck and chin using non-invasive ultrasound technology. According to Demetriou, providing quality medical and cosmetic services is about providing a complete spectrum of options for people who are interested in feeling and looking their best. “They complement each other,” she says. “As patients’ health and conditions improve on the inside, they want to look good on the outside, too.” Demetriou adds that cosmetic clients often bring to light their medical concerns while visiting Qvita, as well. Demetriou also says that some of the treatments and services available at Qvita have both medical and cosmetic benefits. says her next segment will air sometime in September and will be announced on Qvita’s social media platforms for people who want to watch or record it. Social media also is where you can keep up with specials on cosmetic services and big events, like the practice’s two-year anniversary in December. Office manager Katherine Sneesby, who helped open Qvita Health & Wellness, says the practice’s growth stems from a commitment to both medical and cosmetic clients. “We’ve watched it (Qvita) grow because we’re trying to make sure everybody gets the best treatment possible,” Sneesby says. That approach to delivering treatments and services has led to a 5-Star Google rating (as of our deadline) from 18 reviews. Among the reviewers is Samantha Kanyer, who writes ment problems, as well as rejuvenate skin. Also available are aesthetic services, such as dermaplaning, where a surgical blade is very gently scraped across the skin’s surface to remove debris such as dead cells, leaving a refreshed look. At Qvita, this work is handled by Ashley Negron, who has a clinical skincare diploma from the American Institute of Beauty and is licensed by the State of Florida Board of Cosmetology as a registered facial specialist. Negron says Qvita’s cosmetic services use products not widely available at places like chain beauty supply stores. “All of the products we use are medical grade,” says Negron.

According to the Qvita website, the once-a-day supplements “are designed to be natural, convenient to use, and are completely free from artificial fillers, flavors, or colors.” Peggy also spreads the word about good health to the general public through her guest appearances on Tampa Bay-area radio and television programs. New Tampa Foot & Ankle Can Help Alleviate Your Foot & Leg Pain BY CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN At New Tampa Foot & Ankle, patients of all ages can be treated for injuries to their lower extremities, often with same-day appointments. Long-time New Tampa resident Stephen Levin, D.P.M., opened New Tampa Foot & Ankle in 2002, moving the practice to its current location off of S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel (near I-75, in the Cypress Ridge Professional Center) in 2007. With 20 years of experience in private practice in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area, Dr. Levin says that what makes New Tampa Foot & Ankle great are the people — both the staff he works with and the patients. “We treat everyone — children through the geriatric population,” he says. “It’s fun and interesting.” Dr. Levin earned his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Urban Studies from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1992. He then obtained his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1996. He completed a two-year medical and surgical residency at Montgomery Hospital Medical Center in Norristown, PA, in 1998, and then moved to Tampa, when he began working in private practice. He is the past president of both the Florida Podiatric Medical Association and the Hillsborough County Podiatric Medical Association. Brendan Barrett, D.P.M., joined the practice in 2016. Now with two full-time doctors on staff, patients have more flexibility to schedule appointments when it’s most convenient for them. When one doctor is in surgery, the other is in the office. “Also, from a surgical standpoint,” Dr.

foot care, bunions, corns and warts. Dr. Barrett explains that it’s rewarding to help people in this way. “A lot of times, you can give people relief right away,” he says. “For example, with ingrown toenails, it’s a lot of pain, but we can take care of it so a patient is completely pain-free, often within a couple of days.” The doctors commonly see teenagers with sports injuries, and overuse injuries in teenagers and even younger children. The office is completely state-of-the-art, with on-site, digital X-rays, ultrasound and laser technology. “We’ve upgraded to scanning the foot for orthotics, too,” explains Dr. Levin. “It’s much higher tech than plaster molding.” Among the many services offered is a non-invasive screening tool for people who are concerned they might have poor circulation in their feet, especially for people who have diabetes or a history of smoking. The doctors use a device called PADnet to compare the blood pressure in the arm to the blood pressure in the upper leg, lower leg and ankle, to determine if circulation is good, bad or severely bad. New Tampa Foot & Ankle also offers Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT), a method of treating heel pain. In lieu of traditional treatments, such as anti-inflammatory injections or physical therapy, EPAT uses acoustic shock waves to signal the body to increase circulation. Dr. Levin says this allows the area to heal itself more quickly and effectively. “The technology has been around for one or two decades, but it has become more amenable to an office setting,” he says. “There’s no downtime, no medications and no infections.”

n

Finding You Shoes, Too

Another major concern for many patients is toenail fungus. “It’s unsightly; it’s embarrassing,” Dr. Levin says, adding that the fungus can be caused by trauma and even by pedicures in unsanitary conditions. For anyone who wants to be sure their pedicure is clean and sterile, New Tampa Foot & Ankle also has a partnership with an aesthetician who provides medical-grade pedicures in the office. “Women come in because they’ve had a poorly done pedicure and have gotten a bacterial or fungal infection,” explains Dr. Levin. “We can do their manicure and pedicure here, where everything is sterile and clean and the conditions are controlled, so our patients know what they’re getting.”

Diabetic Foot Treatments

New Tampa Foot & Ankle also treats many diabetic patients, who often have poor circulation and nerve damage, need special care for blisters or sores, and also often need special shoes with more room and protection. Annette Knecht is a patient who says she has been seeing Dr. Levin regularly for her foot issues related to diabetes since she was diagnosed in 2012. “I like going there because everyone is very friendly, kind and supportive,” she says. “Dr. Levin is always smiling and gentle. I feel at ease when I’m there.” Annette says she appreciates Dr. Levin’s approach, where he’ll try the most conservative options first. “For my diabetic nerve pain, he started me on a vitamin regimen,” Annette explains. “It worked, and I didn’t have to go on any more medication.”

Dr. Levin says that some foot problems actually can be solved by wearing the right kind of shoes, so New Tampa Foot & Ankle also carries a full line of Vionic shoes. Men and women can buy everything from dress shoes to sneakers, sandals and even flip-flops, right at the office. “These are shoes that have an orthotic built into the shoe,” explains Dr. Levin. “They work well for people who have flat- or high-arched feet, or those who experience heel pain. Especially for women, dress shoes don’t typically have great support, but these do, so you can wear a high heel or wedge shoe, and get that built-in support.” Annette says she does buy her shoes at New Tampa Foot & Ankle. “They seem to work really well with my feet,” she says. She adds that her “summer shoes” the last couple of months were a pair of Vionic orthopaedic flip-flops. “They’re waterproof and I even wear them at the beach,” she says. “They’re very supportive for my ankles. If I didn’t have them, I’d be barefoot and in pain.” Dr. Levin says Vionic shoes are sold at other places, but his office offers a better variety. His staff currently is working to set up a full display in the lobby, where anyone can stop and shop for Vionic shoes. For now, they are sold to the practice’s patients, so Dr. Levin recommends anyone who thinks they would benefit from the shoes to make an appointment for a consultation. New Tampa Foot & Ankle is open Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and is located at 26827 Foggy Creek Rd., Suite 104. Tendercare Pediatrics Keeps Adding Convenience And Comfort For Children BY ANDY WARRENER Lalitha Raguthu, M.D., is in the business of making young people feel better, and she says her job makes her feel better, too. The owner of Tendercare Pediatrics (in the Summergate Professional Park behind Sam’s Club off S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel) says she is proud of the relationships she has built in a short time at the practice she bought two years ago. She posts smiling pictures of children on her Instagram page, and takes great pleasure in providing a wealth of services in a convenient manner. “I am really happy when I am able to connect with a young kid’s outlook on health,” Dr. Raguthu says. “And, since we have been here, we have been very warmly received. It has been very nice.” Dr. Raguthu and her husband, Durga Chintakayala, M.D., or “Dr. Chinta” for short, own the practice together. The pair also own Blossom Pediatric Care on E. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Tampa, where Dr. Chinta has been in solo practice for the last five years, with Dr. Raguthu occasionally covering for him. Now, she is the primary doctor at Tendercare, and he covers for her at the Wesley Chapel location as needed. “One of us is always here,” Dr. Chinta says. Dr. Chinta and Dr. Raguthu have been married for 24 years and have two children. Their son, Sahas, is 17, and their daughter, Sveta, is 14. Both doctors have long and varied resumes. The couple moved to New Tampa in 2013, when Dr. Chinta accepted a position in the spinal cord unit at the James A. Haley

At Tendercare Pediatrics, owner Lalitha Raguthu, M.D., above, takes pride if being accessible to parents and children, while offering a multitude of services that include physicals, allergy testing, urgent care, weekend appointments and even ear piercing. ical College in Gulbarga, India. She did her residency at Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, and served a one-year fellowship in Neurology at New York University in Manhattan, NY. During their time in the Big Apple, Dr. Chinta worked at the VA New York Harbor Health Care System and also worked as an emergency room physician and urgent care doctor at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Raguthu has worked to transform the Wesley Chapel office into a comfortable space that can fill a variety of patient needs. It begins with accessibility. Dr. Raguthu, who also is trained in urgent care, has expanded her services to include any urgent care needs — like emergency issues such as acute asthma or lacerations — and she accepts walk-ins and same-day appointments, and even Saturday appointments, which she says the parents love. The rare instances when she is not available to talk on the phone, she says she will always return calls the same day. “I love that we can get ahold of her anytime we need her,” Christina Bettin says. “It is very convenient to have walk-in or same-day appointments. I really appreciate that there is a nursing room (see below). We highly recommend Tendercare Pediatrics.”

Traditional & Holistic Medicine Although she is a highly trained M.D., Dr. Raguthu says she does take a holistic approach to medicine, and that she is empathetic to parents who have concerns, for example, about vaccines. She says she tries to accommodate and work with them when other pediatricians won’t.

“Dr. Raguthu is the pediatrician you want to have for your child,” writes Tasnouva Habib. “She is very respectful of how I want my child to be treated and does not (prescribe) medication unless absolutely required. I extremely appreciate the holistic approach she has towards care, which shows me that she cares about the well being of my child in the long run and not just a quick fix. I wish I found her sooner.” Tendercare Pediatrics also offers school and sports physicals, and Dr. Raguthu can administer allergy testing as well. “A lot of pediatricians don’t do allergy testing in their own office,” Dr. Raguthu says. “You will have to wait and schedule something at a specialist’s office. This makes it more convenient.” She is proud to show off the new play area she created in the waiting room, so little ones don’t get antsy if they have to wait a few minutes to see the doctor. She also is thrilled with the great response she gets from parents when they visit her new room for nursing mothers. “A lot of mothers are breastfeeding, and that’s very important,” says Dr. Raguthu. “We want to give them privacy and encourage breastfeeding, so we created a nursing room just for them.” Dr. Raguthu is always thinking of more ways to accommodate her patients, even when they ask something as simple as where they should get their child’s ears pierced. It’s a question a lot of parents ask, and the answer is usually the mall. “One of the mothers asked me, and I said I don’t know…but let me go ahead and start doing it,” Dr. Raguthu says of ear piercing. Now, she offers the service in her office. Where better to take a child for a procedure

that requires a needle, some blood, a little pain and that can be momentarily traumatic for a younger child? And yes, she says she uses a numbing medication to make the procedure as painless as it can be. Tendercare Pediatrics has grown since Dr. Raguthu took over, and continues to do so. She is accepting new patients, and accepts many insurance plans, including Medicaid and Staywell, which provides managed care services to Medicaid-eligible beneficiaries. “(Dr. Raguthu) is one of the greatest (pediatricians) I’ve been to,” says Illeana, another satisfied parent who brings her children to Tendercare Pediatrics. “She shows so much compassion when she’s checking our babies. We love her and her office as well. I’m so happy we found her.” While Tendercare Pediatrics accepts patients from birth to age 21, the practice may also be expanding those services with Dr. Chinta as a family doctor. “We are looking into accepting adult patients, too,” Dr. Raguthu says. Dr. Raguthu also says that she believes that her own personal journey has helped her to be a more empathetic practitioner. She has battled back from a stroke, and has suffered through heartbreak. “I love kids,” she says. “My husband and I were in medical school when we lost our infant baby, who was three months old. That’s where my interest in pediatrics really started. I can feel the pain of every mother who calls with a concern. I never brush them off.” Tendercare Pediatrics is located at 27432 Cashford Cir., Suite 102, in the Summergate Professional Park. The office is open Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. For more info, call (813) 973-9900, visit MyTendercare.com or see the ad on page 50.

Financial advisor William Morales (photo), AAMS (Accredited Asset Management Specialist), and branch office administrator Beth Ramirez make up the Edward Jones Financial Services team in the Windfair Professional Center, located across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC). Morales has been serving clients in this location since 2012, when he closed his Tampa Palms office and moved it to Wesley Chapel. He joined Edward Jones in 2008. “I always wanted a Wesley Chapel branch,” says Morales, who has lived in Meadow Pointe with his wife for 20 years, where they raised two daughters, and where he now serves his neighbors. “We are a full-service agency, and I wear many different hats,” he explains. “When I work with clients, I may serve as their stock broker, their insurance agent and their bond dealer. At its core, my work is mainly as a financial planner.” Morales says he helps his clients in any of five different core areas, depending upon each client’s stage of life and their individual needs. They include: • Planning for a comfortable retirement (for those who are currently working) • Enjoying retirement (for those who have already retired) • Paying for education • Preparing for the unexpected • Saving money on taxes Morales adds that he works with his clients through a five-step process, start-

ing with “Where am I today?” and “Where would I like to be?” Then, he says, the next steps — “Can I get there?” and “How do I get there?” — are his job. “If we try to be everything to everyone, we lose that personal touch,” Morales says. “It makes it tough to deliver the same level of service.” Before joining Edward Jones, Morales was president of a mortgage company in New Tampa and also served six years in the U.S. Army Ordinance Corps, spending four years stationed in and around Kuwait. Originally from New York City, he and his family moved to Tampa, where he graduated from Chamberlain High. For more information, call Wesley Chapel Edward Jones branch office administrator Beth Ramirez at (813) 991-7034, and she’ll schedule your appointment with Morales at the office, located at 2748 Windguard Cir., Suite 101 (in the office plaza behind The Hungry Greek) in Wesley Chapel. Creative Permanent Makeup By Pam Gives Women Worry-Free Eyebrows & More years of running a business in the manufactured housing industry. In 2009, Pam says she wanted to do something different, so she went to school to become a hair stylist. While she enjoyed hair, Pam says she soon discovered something that interested her even more. “I love detail,” Pam says. “As a detail person, eyebrows are what first drew me into the permanent makeup field.” So, in 2010, she studied permanent makeup at the Boca Ta-2 School for Permanent Makeup in Williston, FL, and began providing permanent makeup services in Zephyrhills in 2011. Pam is licensed in Florida as both a cosmetologist and as a tattoo artist. “Any time that ink is implanted into the skin, it is a tattoo,” Pam explains, “and you must be licensed through the Florida Department of Health.”

By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

Pam Edmonson loves having new clients in her chair. Whether they’re tired of spending way too much time drawing on their eyebrows — or maybe they’ve even lost the hair on their eyebrows due to chemotherapy — Pam is excited to offer women a beautiful new look that fits both their individual problem(s) and their skin. Pam is a permanent makeup artist who owns Serenity Salon & Spa Suites, located off S.R. 54 in the Brookfield Professional Park, about a half-mile west of Morris Bridge Rd. in Wesley Chapel. At the salon, she has a room where she provides permanent makeup for eyebrows, eyelids and lips. Pam opened Serenity Salon & Spa Suites with a partner more than two years ago, but now she is the sole owner. She takes pride in offering an inviting place for licensed beauty and wellness professionals to offer their services, such as hair styling, massages and facials. “I want to empower people to work for themselves and be successful,” she says, explaining that her salon provides a drama-free environment. “Everyone who works here works well together,” Pam says. “We laugh together. When people walk in, they feel welcomed, and it’s natural. We’re not fake. Although I’m the owner, this isn’t my salon, it’s ours all together.” She says there currently is one chair available for rent for a hairstylist. There also is a room available for a full-time massage therapist.

“We have amazing stylists and aestheticians here,” says Pam, who also emphasizes that if you try a stylist and don’t love them, try a different one. “No one’s feelings will be hurt,” she says. Pam’s journey to salon owner started as a second career for her, after many

Microblading Eyebrows

While Pam offers permanent makeup for eyebrows and lips, along with permanent eyeliner, her most popular service is microblading for eyebrows. “Brows are always my favorite because of the drastic way they change how someone looks,” Pam says. “Our eyes are meant to be framed, and brows definitely complete the face. Some women look so much younger when they have them done.”

With microblading, Pam uses a small blade and ink to create individual stroke lines. She uses a pencil to draw an outline, then uses the microblade to draw each individual hair, adding a more natural look to the eyebrow. Pam strongly recommends that anyone considering microblading “should do their homework,” explaining that some people who offer the service may only have a three-day class in the technique before they start working on clients. The person who will do your eyebrows should sit down with you and show you before-and-after pictures of their own work, Pam says. Pam was trained in microblading in 2014, when the process was new. Since then, she says she has done hundreds of sets of eyebrows. She requires a free, in-person, no-obligation consultation for all clients. Even for someone who is sure they want permanent makeup, Pam still does a consultation, because each person’s skin is unique. “Although microblading is my favorite,” Pam says, “it may not be the right answer for a client. There can be a better alternative, depending on the canvas that I am working on.” Because Pam is so passionate about ensuring that clients are educated about permanent makeup and microblading, she has started a video series on her website to help people better understand the process. At CreativePermanentMakeupByPam. com, be sure to click on her blog, which links to her educational videos. “I answer a lot of questions that so many people have,” Pam says. “I made the videos because I wanted to put some education out there.”

His wife, Ashley, helps him with the business. “Our focus is on the customer,” she says. “Are they as happy with their floors one year, five years, even 20 years later, as they were when they got them?” She says they also want to ensure that if you are selling your home, your floor will bring top value and the new owners will be happy with the floor, too.

By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

In Jason Cantin’s two decades working in the flooring industry, he’s seen a lot of things go wrong. In fact, for the past six years, he has worked as a flooring inspector. When someone says their floor is bad and wants the manufacturer or installer to fix it, they call Jason, as a first step toward filing a claim in court. He says bad flooring installation is so prevalent in the industry that 85 percent of all floors being installed today are being installed incorrectly. He says that nearly every retailer out there is trying to sell more floors, and install them quickly, and move on to the next job, with little concern for whether or not your floor will last. “Not every floor that is installed incorrectly fails,” he says, “but if you have carpet pulls in the doorway, or wrinkles in your carpet, or your floating floor creaks or makes noise, you have a bad install.” So, he decided to do something about it. He opened Done Right Flooring & Cabinets, selling the highest-quality flooring brands, installed in your home, to give people an alternative to the options available in the flooring market in Tampa. Done Right sells hardwood, tile and laminate floors, as well as carpet, and also offers custom wood floors, in which every piece is hand cut, hand laid, sanded and finished in place. In addition to selling flooring, Jason has a partner in the store who can help homeowners find the perfect cabinets, following

Jason says they do this by hiring the best installers, who are certified by taking handson and written certification tests and are required to do ongoing continuing education. He adds, however, that this approach is not typical in the industry. “There is no license needed to install wood floors in Hillsborough County,” explains Jason. “There is no recognized body to verify that the work done is correctly.” In the absence of recognized standards and holding flooring companies accountable for installing floors correctly, Jason says he is doing all he can to change the industry, one consumer at a time. It also is becoming one of the centers of the youth hockey universe, able to host – and keep home — some of the most promising teenage hockey players in our area, with its highly-regarded Tampa Bay Juniors teams, which are owned by U.S. Women’s National Team coach Brett Strot and coached by his brother Garrett Strot. “There are a lot of really strong hockey players in the greater Tampa Bay area,” Brett Strot said. “We want to keep them here and push them to higher levels.” The Tampa Bay Juniors might the area’s best-kept sports secret (until now). The club’s Premier team went 30-14-0 last year, while the Elite team sported a 32-12-0 record in 2017-18. The club is for youth hockey players, ages 16-20, and it participates in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). Its goal is to get youth hockey players through the transition from high school to college, while offering skills refinement and scouting exposure, before the players make their decision about whether or not to try to move on to the next level. “It’s typical (even in Canada) for youth hockey players to play one or two years after high school before they go to college,” Strot said. “These kids are looking to advance their game.” Current Freedom High School senior Vincent Margosian and junior Jackson Drys-

A Little History...

Freedom High’s Vincent Margosian is hoping his experience in the Tampa Bay Juniors hockey program leads to more interest from college coaches. (Photo: Andy Warrener) dale both harbor hopes of playing at the next level. They are both on the Tampa Bay Juniors’ Premier team, and Margosian played for both the Freedom High team and the Juniors last season. Margosian is a towering defenseman who has drawn interest from Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA. Margosian says he hopes to get some

more visibility through this coming 2018-19 season, which starts tomorrow, as well as in the December showcase tournament at FHCI. “It keeps me busy,” Margosian says. “It’s a grind, hard, but I’m getting better in the end, (so) it’s worth it. It’s what I’m trying to do.” Drysdale has similar aspirations. While it’s his first season with the Tampa Bay Juniors,

Strot started the Tampa Bay Juniors in 2008, when he lived in Jacksonville. That team was called the Jacksonville Ice Dogs. They played two years in Jacksonville, before moving to Ellenton (Bradenton area) and then to Estero (south of Ft. Myers). On January 21, 2017, six days before the official Grand Opening of FHCI, Strot made official the move to Wesley Chapel, as his Tampa Bay Juniors played against the Palm Beach Hawks. Athletes in junior hockey programs are encouraged and often do take college classes here and there, but don’t usually enroll in college, so that they can retain their years of eligibility when they finally get to college. The idea is to get an athlete more exposure to college coaches and to increase their chances of getting a scholarship — or a better scholarship than they might have already had until then. Strot is a great example. While living in Minnesota, he had a few Division III offers coming out of high school. He played one year of junior hockey and wound up with multiple Division I offers, eventually suiting up for the University of Minnesota.

Twisted Sisters Softball Wins World Series

The 10U Twisted Sisters All-Stars from North Tampa made friends with other teams at the world series, including the Chinese team (pictured) that ended up cheering for them as the Twisted Sisters won the World Series championship game.

By JOHN C. COTEY

john@ntneighborhoodnews.com

The Twisted Sisters 10U All-Star softball team, made up of primarily of players from New Tampa, Zephyrhills and Wesley Chapel, weren’t so sure about their new Florida uniforms given to them by the organizers of the World Series Diamond Championship. They didn’t fit right. Didn’t feel right. Didn’t look right. So, after a slow start at the World Series in Lake City, FL, where the team went 3-3 in pool play and suffered consecutive losses for the first time all season, coach Otis Bass asked if his team could go back to their North Tampa All-Star uniforms. Granted permission to do so, the Twisted Sisters didn’t lose again. On Aug. 3, the team won three games, and on Saturday, Aug. 4, they rolled over Treasure Coast 7-0 to capture the Babe Ruth World Series 10U Diamond Championship. “What a way to end it,” said Bass. What a way indeed. On the morning she found out her great grandmother had passed away, pitcher Jordan Ankers pitched a no-hitter, outfielder Willa Soorus broke open a pitcher’s duel with a bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning, and catcher Allison McDuffie hit a home run the next inning to cap off a dramatic run to the title. “It was a really cool moment,” said Bass, whose daughter Bella played second base and hit .458 with a team-best 10 RBI at the

World Series and is one of four Hunter’s Green Elementary students on the team, along with Soorus, Eliza Connell and Skylah Stephens. Bass said his roster was littered with standout players. Ankers was dominant in the pitching circle and batted .385 on the way to being named to the All-10U World Series team. Chelsea Anderson, a first baseman who also filled in at catcher when needed, played both positions so well at the World Series she was awarded a Gold Glove. Soorus — “Our unsung hero throughout the World Series,” Bass said — led the team with a .538 batting average, while outfielder Lola Coole, who goes to Tampa Palms Elementary, was second with a .526 average. Third baseman Haley Horne batted .391 and was second on the team with 9 RBI. Bass said every member of the Twisted Sisters contributed to the 7-3 record at the World Series, including outfielder Eliana Rivera (.357), shortstop Eliza Connell, Skylah Stephens and Turner/Bartels’ Grace Mercado. Bass also credited his coaching staff — Jamie Ankers, Justin Horne and Devon and Mike Connell — with helping lead the team to an undefeated season in Xtreme Softball, a State championship and World Series title. “We knew we had great pitching and could hit well, and were fast and smart on the basepaths,” Bass said. “We had them battle-tested, and knew we had a pretty good team here.”

Perfect Start For Wharton X-Country!

The Wharton High boys cross country team pulled off a perfect score in its season opener at the Central Hills Divisional Meet at King High on Aug. 21, taking all of the first five spots. The boys won the 5K (3.1-mile) race with a perfect score of 15 (one point for first place, two for second and so on, with only the first five finishers counting). Coach Kyle LoJacono says that is the first time in the school’s history that the boys varsity team has registered a perfect score at a meet. Individual times and places were: 1. Tre Rivers, Sr. (17 minutes, 17 seconds); 2. Anthony Stephens, Sr. (17:39); 3. Jared Hammill, So. (17:45); 4. Josue Reyes, Sr. (18:19); 5. Thomas Walter, So. (18:28). Though their scores did not register, junior Jackson Blanchard finished seventh and senior Nash Robinson was ninth at the meet. The Wharton girls team placed second at the same event with 35 points, with junior Nia Rivers finishing in 1st place in 21:48 & freshman Brooke Reif in 5th (25:41). Are You Crazy About Keto Pizza? Please Try This At Home! By GARY NAGER

F ROM what I see on Facebook, even though I don’t “get” it personally, everyone in Wesley

Chapel is completely insane about the crustless pizza being sold in our area for those who are on the Keto diet. Yes, Keto pizza is all the rage, even though I can’t personally eat more than one small ”slice” of it, but not because it isn’t tasty. All I can tell you is that if I ate more than one slice of Keto pizza at a time, I might not go to the bathroom for the rest of the year. Just saying. On the other hand, someone very near and dear to my heart is on the Keto diet, so we’ve simply had to try it at a couple of local pizza places. And, all I can tell you is that my fiancée Jannah (Top left) The pepperoni Keto pizza from 900º Woodfired McDonald definitely has improved on any version Pizza. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), which will be changing its name to AdventHealth Wesley Chapel in January 2019 (see Business Notes on page 13), continues to be at the forefront of health care in our area. The hospital recently opened its Wound Care Center inside the FHWC Wellness Plaza, the building due north of the hospital itself. FHWC CEO Denyse Bales-Chubb and dozens of Adventist Health dignitaries, local elected officials/political candidates and North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce members were on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 27, and everyone in attendance (including yours truly) came away truly impressed with this latest addition to FHWC’s plethora of medical services for the community. Although the Wound Care Center has plenty of state-of-the-art technology for caring for all kinds of wounds, lesions and lacerations, the coolest things we saw as we toured the facility were two hyperbaric chambers (photo far right), which traditionally have been used for people with the “bends” from scuba diving, but which (we were told) also can help with healing for those who have chronic sores and wounds that don’t heal, from diabetes or after radiation therapy for cancer. Congrats also go out to the local catering company called C•B•K Catering & Events, which served amazing edible cones filled with a zesty chicken salad, plus delicious cheese

tortellinis and perfect bruschetta at the event. For more info about FHWC and the new Wound Care Center, visit FloridaHospital.com. For more info about C•B•K Catering, visit CBKTampa.com or call (813) 699-3060 and please tell Chase Mayer the New Tampa Neighborhood News sent you!

VIPs Check Out The Hyatt Place

In our last issue, I mentioned that the new Hyatt Place Hotel & Sierra Conference Center were getting ready to open, which actually happened on July 30. On Aug. 9, representatives of the new hotel hosted a VIP event we attended, where members of the North Tampa Bay Chamber (NTBC) of Commerce Board of Direc-

tors and other local VIPs took tours of the 132-room hotel and got to sample some of the tasty food that will be served in the Hyatt Place’s Gallery restaurant. The Hyatt Place Hotel is located at 26000 Sierra Center Blvd. For more info, stop in or call (813) 803-5600 or visit Hyatt.com, and please tell the hotel’s staff that you read about them (again) in the New Tampa Neighborhood News!

Umu To Replace OTB Café

Although OTB (Only The Best) Delights Café closed its original location at 2653 Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in Wesley Chapel several weeks ago, have no fear. Not only is OTB set to reopen sometime

in September in its new location a couple of miles further north at the new Nye Commons (4873 BBD), but there already is a new restaurant getting ready to open in its old location. The Thai owners of Umu Japanese & Thai have been transforming the old OTB space into an elegant-looking future home of great sushi, Bento boxes and other Japanese and Thai favorites and hope to be open sometime in September. • And, don’t forget to check out the “Neighborhood News” page on Facebook for assistant editor John Cotey’s timely news updates, as well as the latest videos from WCNT-tv — Wesley Chapel & New Tampa Television. Our most recent segments include an update about everything happening on S.R. 56, the New Tampa Brew Fest (see pg. 3 & below) and the recent “Tampa Bay Idol” auditions at Florida Hospital Center Ice, where at least 35 young people got invitations to the next round of auditions in Orlando. — GN
