Bickham Named Honorary Mayor At Chamber Awards Banquet! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC)’s annual “Excellence in Business Awards” banquet, which was held on September 14 at Hunter’s Green Country Club in New Tampa. But, I was definitely there in spirit as the Chamber once again showed why it is still the heart of the business community in Wesley Chapel. Congrats go out to the evening’s many award winners, especially to the new Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel, Cathy Bickham of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC)’s Chapel Home Health. Cathy also was one of the primary members of the fund-raising teams for previous Honorary Mayor winners John Negley of the FHWC Foundation and Troy Stevenson of Wesley Chapel Nissan, who will retain the title until January 1, 2014. Bickham, who raised a total of $4,000 to benefit both the Lion’s Club of Wesley Chapel and Support The Troops, Inc., beat out second place finisher Mary Ann Yaney of Central Bank on BBD in New Tampa, who will replace Kenneth Stewart of Integrated Security Consultants as Wesley Chapel’s Honorary Deputy Mayor. Yaney’s campaign helped the nonprofit

Tampa Leads & Philanthropy. “I’m very honored and proud to be representing the Wesley Chapel community as its Honorary Mayor,” Bickham says. “I’m looking forward to continuing to be involved in the community and growing its business.” Bickham also was named “Volunteer of the Year,” one of several awards given out by the evening emcee, Eric Johnson of Wesley Chapel Honda & Toyota. Other winners included “Small Business of the Year” winner A Focus on Fitness and owner Kelly Mothershead, “Large Business of the Year” winner FHWC, “Business Leader of the Year” Greg Lenners of the Shops at Wiregrass, “Civic or Non- Profit of the Year” Oasis Pregnancy Care Center in Land O’Lakes, “President’s Award” winner Dean Smith of Quest National Services & “Board Member of the Year” winner Maureen Moore of Saint Leo University. Congratulations to all of the award winners and to Chamber president Jeff Novotny and his Board and the Chamber staff for an amazing 2012-13 fiscal year. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know the Pasco County Economic Development Council (EDC) also has an annual award banquet, but I do know that at this year’s banquet — held Sept. 4 at Saddlebrook Resort Tampa on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel — businesses located in Wesley Chapel came home with a nice handful of trophies. Hosting the gala was Al Reuchel of Bay News 9, who helped the EDC give out a number of awards in a total of four categories — “Manufacturing Industry of the Year,” “Service/Distribution Industry of the Year,” “Technology” and “Special Contribution.”

So, it was pretty special that the following Wesley Chapel-based businesses were able to grab this much hardware: The Shops at Wiregrass Mall (Service/Distribution) — “Because of their upscale style and commitment, the Shops have become an essential part of Wesley Chapel and Pasco County with their signature events. The mall has 42 stores and employs more than 1,200 people.” Sign-A-Rama of New Tampa (Service/Distribution) — “Full service sign shop that opened in 2010. An Embarrassing Correction, My Car & The Spelling Bee Choker? An editorial by Gary Nager when it was under different I was excited when District 2 Pasco County Commission candidate — and fellow Wesley Chapel (noon) Rotary Club member Mike Moore called me the day our last issue hit mailboxes...that is, excited until he pointed out one of the stupidest errors I’ve committed in my nearly 20 years of doing this job. Thankfully, it wasn’t a mistake that damaged Mike or his campaign in any way, it just made me look stupid as an editor and spoiled an otherwise outstanding story by assistant editor Matt Wiley, who really was not at fault, even though his name was on the story’s byline and mine wasn’t. I had confused Mike’s wife Lauren with someone we had previously written about who just happened to be Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco’s sister, and I put a note on Matt’s story to check that fact, which he did...and he told me my mistake, but I still somehow ended up saving the unedited version, so my question appeared in the print version of the story. I was able to quickly make the correction on our on-line edition (at WCNeighborhoodNews.com) the same day, but the damage was done. Mike forgave me, despite being rightfully annoyed when he saw my boo-boo, but Sheriff Nocco called to laughingly ask me, “So, what’s the big deal about being related to me? Am I such a terrible guy?” But again, sorry Mike.

pressure, as any parent whose kid is into spelling these days surely knows. So, even though I spelled words like “mellifluous” and “antidisestablishmentarianism” correctly, I choked on the word “foreign,” which I somehow incorrectly spelled “foriegn,” even though I knew how to spell the word. In short, I choked. But, when the call went out for spellers to compete with our Wesley Chapel Rotary Club “Bikers & Babes” squad at the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Catch the Buzz” Spelling Bee at “the Hive”/Spartan Manor in New Port Richey on Sept. 12, my teammates Dane Parilo, Leah Marchette and Vicki Hamilton were counting on me to be our “ringer.” And I did O.K., I guess. Our team finished in a five-way tie for third of 32 fourplayer teams, after I correctly spelled “gneiss” (a metamorphic rock; which eliminated at least 11 teams) and once had to correct the organizers, who misspelled the word “zeppelin” (they spelled it “zepplin”) in an earlier round. But somehow, I choked again. Vicki probably knew how to spell “peignoir,” but I overruled her with the incorrect “penoir,” or we would have finished alone in third. And to think, I was a French minor in college, yet both times I’ve choked, it was on an “eign” word of French origin. Yeesh.

ownership. But still, Justin and Paul didn’t let me walk away until they got me in the car I wanted at the fair price I needed and PJ got me financed. So, even though I’ve never had an advertisement in the paper from the new ownership, I genuinely appreciate the way these folks handled their business and will likely be their On Sept. 12, our editor “anchored” the Wesley Chapel Rotary customer again. My Thanks To Wesley Chapel Honda

I finally was able to get a new car, after putting nearly 170,000 miles on my 2007 red Honda Civic Si Coupe in more than six years, but if not for my friends at Wesley Chapel Honda, it probably wouldn’t have happened. Rotary president Eric Johnson works for both Wesley Chapel Honda & Toyota, but he had no influence in my situation. However, the way salesman Paul Hill, finance manager PJ Leary and desk manager Justin Hann handled my unique situation speaks loudly, as does Eric, about the type of people the dealership employs. I wasn’t easy to finance, I changed my mind mid-stream about the model of car I wanted to buy, and I had previously had a very bad experience at the same dealership

W ESLEY C HAPEL WC Business, Auto Burglar Behind Bars

The man behind numerous business and auto burglaries in the Wesley Chapel

area is behind bars, following his arrest on September 16. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Ramon Junior Rivera, 24, a convicted burglary felon (for burglary and weapons possession) who was released from prison last July, is the man behind at least ten business burglaries stretching from Wesley Chapel to Zephyrhills and even into Hillsborough County, deputies say. The PCSO arrest reRamon Rivera port states that Rivera, who lives in Meadow Pointe, began his crime spree as far back as June of this year. “Hopefully, business owners feel some relief with this guy behind bars,” says PCSO spokesperson Doug Tobin. “This is a significant break in the case. We’re working with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) and Zephyrhills Police Department (ZPD) because we believe that he worked in those areas, as well.” Tobin says that after being arrested, Rivera confessed to ten burglaries that took place in both Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills. So far, Rivera has been charged with three auto burglaries, as well as burglaries at the Subway and Tokyo Grill & Sushi on Eiland Blvd. in eastern Wesley Chapel and burglarizing Latin Twist, the Hungry Greek and Dickey’s BBQ Pit, all of which are located in the Shoppes of Wesley Chapel shopping plaza across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC). He also is charged with burglarizing Boyd’s Jewelers in Zephyrhills...Read the rest of this story at WCNeighborhoodNews.com.

Man Caught With Pants Down Gets DUI

After being found with his pants down and under the influence in his vehicle that was parked in the middle of the street, a Wesley Chapel man has been released from the Pasco County jail. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Benjamin Chad Mishoe, 36, of Road Runner Rd. in eastern Wesley Chapel, was arrested at 5:45 a.m. on September 14 when a deputy found him sleeping in the driver’s seat of his running vehicle about half a mile from his home. The arrest report states that, in addition to driving a vehicle with several empty beer bottles, Mishoe’s pants were pulled partially down and that his genitals were exposed. The deputy tapped the window until Mishoe woke up and then had him perform field sobriety tests, during which the deputy said Mishoe showed various signs of impairment. Two men are in custody after allegedly stabbing a man in a car while driving, just north of S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), on September 7, an offduty deputy was traveling south on I-75 when he noticed a silver Acura sedan parked on the northbound shoulder of the interstate. Mascorro, 20, of Bristol, FL, deceased in the passenger seat with several apparent stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. The off-duty deputy detained the suspects, PCSO says. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the three were driving north on I75, when the driver, GonJesse Blair zalez, handed a knife to Blair, who was sitting in the rear, passenger-side seat. Local Residents Taken In Massive Drug Operation

A recent, large-scale drug sting operation by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has resulted in more than 50 arrests in just 24 hours, including two Wesley Chapel residents, each charged with dealing in controlled substances. As part of the PCSO Vice Narcotics Unit’s “Operation: Balderstone,” on September 5, 55 arrests were made across Pasco County, including Lazaro “Lachi” Martin, 23, of the Riverside Crossing community on S.R. 54, and Heather Marie Short, 35, of Quail Hollow, who were arrested after selling prescription pills and other drugs to undercover PCSO deputies. PCSO reports that on three separate occasions, the most recent on September 5, Martin was in possession of varying amounts of MDMA — or “Molly,” as it is popularly called. During the two previous incidents, Martin sold a combined amount of nearly 35 grams of the substance to undercover deputes in exchange for more than $1,000. Martin was charged with two counts of possession of MDMA, one count of sale of methamphetamine and one count of trafficking in MDMA. He was released from the Pasco County jail on a $70,000 bond. Short was arrested on September 5 for selling Xanax and Suboxone, a medication used to treat opiate addiction, to undercover deputies on three occasions since January. In total, Short sold 18 Suboxone “packs” and one Xanax pill to deputies for a total of $235...Short remains in custody on three counts each of possession of, and sale of, a controlled substance. Man Arrested For Trespassing, Eating At WCH

Most kids can’t wait to be out of school. However, one Wesley Chapel man is in custody after hanging out on Wesley Chapel High (WCH)’s campus after dropping his brother off at the school. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Austin Podosowski, 20, of Angus Valley, had dropped his younger brother off at WCH around 7:20 a.m. on August 20, when he decided to park and walk onto the school’s Wells Rd. campus without making the school aware of his presence, which is Pasco County School District policy. Two other non-students waited in the tan Lincoln sedan in the parking lot, the WCH resource deputy says. Podosowski, a former WCH student, walked his brother to his class and even stopped in the cafeteria to buy some food and talk with other students...Read the rest at WCNeighborhoodNews.com. — MW

Bid Recieved For S.R. 54/56 Toll Road By Matt Wiley Interest from private firms is building regarding the possible construction of a toll road that would connect Wesley Chapel to western Pasco County. According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), a Request for Proposals (RFP) was opened on August 23, after the agency received an unsolicited bid from International Infrastructure Partners (IIP), LLC — a group of investors and infrastructure construction companies — to lease right-of-way to fund, design, build, operate and maintain a toll road with elevated and “at-grade” lanes along the more than 33-mile stretch of S.R. 54/56 from Wesley Chapel to New Port Richey. “(FDOT) is very intrigued,” says FDOT spokeswoman Kris Carson. “But, this is all still in the beginning stages. Our Tallahassee office has already received calls for information from several other firms.” Carson explains that the bid, which was written by Gerald Stanley — who has more than 45 years in the state’s highway and bridge construction industry and serves as a consultant to FDOT and other engineering companies and contractors — was received on June 11, but it was not released until August 23. Since the company sent in a proposal, by law, FDOT had to open an RFP period to see if other companies were interested in the project. The period for proposals is set to close on October 23. In its initial proposal, IIP describes the project being built in phases, the first right here

in Wesley Chapel, from Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. west to the Suncoast Pkwy. toll road, followed by a second phase that would connect to U.S. 19 in New Port Richey, a total of about 33 miles. The firm also considers further connecting the proposed toll road east to U.S. 301. An FDOT release states that this would be the first of its kind in the state, as no other toll road has been privately funded and constructed entirely in state-owned right-of-way. Because of this, IIP says that the road literally would cost the taxpayers nothing to build. Instead, Guggenheim Securities, LLC, a capital partner of IIP, would fund the project, Stanley writes in his proposal. The estimated cost of the project and the amount that IIP would spend to lease the right-of-way was not disclosed in the proposal. If IIP’s proposal were approved, the actual construction of the project would be done by Edmonton, Alberta (Canada)-based PCL Construction, which constructed the fly-over onramp onto I-75 from BBD and currently is working on the I-4 Crosstown Connector project near the Port of Tampa. In his proposal, Stanley touts that the project will create thousands of jobs in the state, provide critical infrastructure ahead of the current planned timeline and at no upfront costs, while providing connections to existing State and County roads to reduce congestion and begin the northern loop around the Tampa Bay area. The proposed project also will offer the flexibility to add additional facilities and connections in the future.

Mike Moore Kicks Off Commission Campaign In Dade City By Matt Wiley Surrounded by family, friends and supporters, Pasco County Board of County Commissioners District 2 hopeful Mike Moore (R-Wesley Chapel) kicked off his campaign on September 18 in Dade City. Inside the packed Kafé Kokopelli in downtown Dade City, guests and honorary hosts — including Dist. 18 State Senator Wilton Simpson (R-Dade City), Pasco County Schools superintendent Kurt Browning, Pasco property appraiser Mike Wells, San Antonio Mayor Tim Newlon and Zephyrhills Mayor Danny Burgess — gathered with Moore for a fund-raising reception. Honorary hosts House Speaker Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel), Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco (R-Odessa) and Commissioner Jack Mariano (R-Hudson), all of whom have endorsed Moore, were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. “Once in a while, you have somebody who runs for office that has the skills that are necessary to spend your money, and I think that’s so important,” said Wells during the event. “Many times, we vote for people because we like the way they look, they’re a friend of a friend or you know them from the golf course. (Mike) is a business man. He understands running a business, and government is nothing more than a big business... I think he’s going to make a great county commissioner.” Sen. Simpson, who represents much of the northern and western portions of Pasco,

shared Wells’ sentiment. “The county is going through some major changes,” Sen. Simpson said. “Infrastructure is going in, economic development is coming into the county; things are getting better. We’ve been treading water for the past several years and growth is starting to come back and take off. I’m very supportive of Mike.” “Everyone’s support means so much to me and my family,” Moore said. “Never in my wildest dreams as a kid did I see myself running for public office, being a politician or running for the County Commission.” Moore stated that the purpose of his campaign is to help bring secure, high-paying jobs to Pasco, so that opportunites aren’t missed. He plans to create an action plan to show companies what the County has to offer. “I need to know what’s working for you and what’s not in this County,” Moore said. “The campaign’s not about me. It’s about everyone here, and most important, it’s about Pasco County.”

Once Upon A Child Opens Up For Sales Of Gently Used Kid’s Products! By Bonnie Mason Wesley Chapel residents Brian and Melissa Levering are betting on the families in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area — betting that those families are ready to clear their closets, garages and storage spaces of items their children have outgrown, in return for cash! On August 1, the Leverings opened Once Upon A Child, a children’s consignment shop, in New Tampa’s Pebble Creek Collection shopping plaza, located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., a mile south of the Pasco County line. The 3,500-sq.-ft. retail space is a place where families can buy, sell or trade gently used children's clothing (from infants to preteen), toys and equipment. The Pebble Creek location is just one of five Once Upon A Child franchises in the Tampa Bay area, with 260 stores located across the U.S. and Canada. “We are excited to move into phase two of our business, in which we can start to sell our inventory to families at a significantly reduced cost, well below retail prices,” says Brian, who explains that since opening the business, the store’s focus has been on purchasing items from area residents to build the store’s inventory. “I think families will be happy with what we have to offer them,” Brian says. “The response has been astounding!”

12

The Leverings live in Wesley Chapel with their five-year-old son Brody and one-year-old daughter Mila, and understand that raising a young family is costly in any economy, but especially when money is tight, when most everyone welcomes the chance to make or save money — or both. With Once Upon A Child, your kids can look great in the latest styles without having to pay those high-end designer prices. The Leverings are sure you will be happy with their selection of the latest in new and gently used brand name clothes, toys, books, equipment and furniture, just right for fast-growing babies, toddlers and kids. And, because Once Upon A Child purchases items from customers daily, the store’s inventory is always changing, which is why the Leverings recommend browsing the store often, especially if you’re searching for items of a specific brand. You will find gently used name brand clothing like Gap, Gymboree, Hanna Anderson, Justice and Tommy Hilfiger, to name just a few, from infant and toddler sizes, up to size 16 for girls and boys’ sizes 18-20. And, Once Upon A Child also has all the toy brands your kids know and love, including Fisher Price, Leap Frog and Lego, in addition to the best brands in infant products, such as swings, bouncers, entertainers and strollers. “I had to travel to Northdale in Car-

Already having decided to open a family business, Melissa and Brian then decided that families like theirs needed a resale business for children's items closer to the Brian and Melissa Levering of Once Upon A Child in the New Tampa/ Wesley Pebble Creek Collection on BBD are ready to provide your Chapel area. child with new and gently used toys and clothing for less! Make That Vehicle Shine, Run Like New At Bay Breeze Car Wash & Lube! By Lauren Saslow While most northerners joke about the lack of seasons in the south, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents oftentimes mark two times of each year by prevalent pests; the two most notable ‘seasons’ being mosquito season and lovebug season. Lovebugs, or Plecia nearctica, are a fly species — common along Gulf Coast states — that have flight seasons in late spring and again in late summer. While harmless to humans — they do not sting or bite — lovebug populations are a nuisance to motorists. The acidic egg masses of the dead females that splatter on cars can dry quickly in the subtropical heat, causing ingrained build-up in the clear coat of automobile paint. “It is important for drivers to be vigilant about washing and waxing their vehicles frequently during this time of year to avoid damaged paint jobs and keep their windshields free from severe smudging which can become a driving hazard,” says Stephen Schab, the managing partner of Bay Breeze Car Wash & Lube, located behind the Walgreens on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and on Doña Michele Dr. in North Palms Village (about three miles south of the Pasco County line). Schab adds that Bay Breeze offers a convenient solution to lovebug woes. As a full-service car wash, customers can

choose from a simple $5 no-wait express lane to a bumper-to-bumper interior and exterior detail as well as a variety of options in between. À la carte services allow motorists to customize their service to suit their individual needs, and a full lube service at Bay Breeze allows them to receive an oil change while they wait at a competitive price. In a fast-paced world where New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents may sometimes neglect a much-needed car wash, the convenience of this New Tampa location (only one traffic light north of the BBD exit off of I-75) allows drivers to squeeze in either a quick or detailed car wash during their commute home. Using state-of-the-art technology, including Envirosoft 2nd Generation Foam wash material, which is safe for all vehicle finishes, Bay Breeze offers quality care and service catered to fit nearly any budget. From the moment a customer is greeted until the time a supervisor returns your car, quality service is ensured through the entire process. Since 2004, this privately owned company — which now has six locations throughout the greater Tampa Bay area — has succeeded through the implementation of Bay Breeze’s five key premises: “Quality Service, Clean & Orderly, Safety, Friendly and Easy To Do Business With.” Schab explains that BayBreeze is a

As an established business for nearly a decade, Bay Breeze uses some of its resources to support education locally. For example, Sylvie Wittmann, carnival chairperson for the Tampa Palms Elementary PTA, expressed appreciation to the company for its donation for a raffled gift basket earlier this year. “We just wanted to let you know we value our relationship with you,” Wittmann said. “Thank you again for your participation and support of Tampa Palms Elementary.” Florida College Academy of Temple Terrace also expressed thanks recently for Bay Breeze’s contribution to the school’s spring auction, which helped to fund outdoor play areas and purchase a new online reading program. The company’s generous donation of an auction item to the nonprofit General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) New Tampa Junior

Woman’s Club’s annual charity event this past spring helped to fund the Tampa Police Department’s Resources In Community Hope (RICH) House of Sulphur Springs, which serves disadvantaged children and their families by providing local youths with a safe place to complete their homework and get something to eat and drink after school. Bay Breeze’s charitable contributions extend beyond education, however. Tampa MetLife’s Linda Burrage explains that Bay Breeze’s donation of raffle items and moral support to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, which recently was held at Freedom High in Tampa Palms, “honored cancer survivors, paying tribute to the lives we’ve lost to the disease and helped raise money to fight it.” “There is no complacency in our business,” insists Schab. “We are always looking for ways to improve. There are two ways to move. One is forward and the other is backward, and we don’t want to be doing the latter.” New Tampa’s Bay Breeze Car Wash & Lube is located at 17501 N. Palms Village Pl., behind Walgreens. For additional information, visit BayBreezeCarWash.com or call 6151333. The hours of operation are Monday– Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sunday. Feel free to call first if the weather appears to be threatening, but the oil change area is open rain or shine.

Sun Laboratory Services Opens Diagnostic Center In Wesley Chapel By Bonnie Mason Roger Briggs, the chief executive officer (CEO) and co-founder of Sun Laboratory Services, Inc. (which has a location in Wesley Chapel), stands by his mission to “deliver a level of patient service other laboratories are either unwilling or unable to provide.” Briggs says that both Sun Labs’ new diagnostic center, located across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), as well as the original location in Sun City Center, offer convenience and customer-centered care that other labs often don’t. The main laboratory opened in Sun City in 2005 and grew from about 1,000 square feet to a 15,000-sq.-ft. facility. “We went from serving a few local clients to more than 300, in addition to the individual patients who use our two diagnostic centers daily for their prescribed lab tests,” says Briggs. Sun Laboratory Services is a full-service clinical laboratory that partners with businesses and organizations to provide onsite phlebotomy services (phlebotomy is the act of drawing or removing blood in order to obtain a sample for analysis and diagnosis) and lab results. Small World Pediatrics Takes Care Of Your Kids From Diapers To Degrees By Matt Wiley Watching children develop from newborns to college scholars is a joy usually reserved for parents. However, José Jiménez, M.D., the one physician who has been seeing all of the patients at Small World Pediatrics (now located jut north of S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel) for the past decade, has been right there with the parents in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area help those kids stay healthy as they have grown and matured from babies and young children into teenagers and young adults. Now located (since 2010) in the Windguard Professional Center across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), Small World Pediatrics is a fullservice pediatrics practice that cares for children from the time that they are born through their college years (usually to about age 21). Among the services Dr. Jiménez provides are physical exams for school and sports, vaccinations for daycare, school and college entry, and treating a wide range of pediatric illnesses. Dr. Jiménez originally opened Small World Pediatrics in 2003 in the Northwood plaza on BBD near Target, about a mile closer to the Hillsborough County line than his new office. He says that becoming a pediatric physician is something

20

that he knew he wanted to do since his sophomore year at prestigious Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. “I had studied engineering my first two years because of my love for math and science, but I felt I would be happier using my scientific knowledge caring for people on a day-to-day basis,” Dr. Jiménez explains. “It turns out that I was right. I love my job, and I love coming to work every day.” Dr. Jiménez earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in 1992, after transferring from Cornell during his junior year. He earned his M.D. degree from the University of South Florida (USF) College of Medicine in 1996, and completed his pediatric residency at USF in 2000. “I chose pediatrics because I love working with children,” Dr. Jimenez says. “I get to smile every time I walk into a patient’s room.” Dr. Jiménez adds that he really wanted to live in and be a part of the community where he was practicing. “I decided to open a practice in Wesley Chapel because my wife and I loved the area,” says the Meadow Pointe resident. “Wesley Chapel has a small town feel, yet it is very close to the city of Tampa and just across the county line from New Tampa. This is a great place to live, raise a family and work.” It’s easy to feel like a kid walking into

Dr. Jiménez’s office, which is decorated on every wall with Disney characters and other cartoons. Animated movies are constantly being shown on the lobby’s flat-screen TV. The exam rooms, too, make children feel right at home with colorful cartoon characters adorning the walls.

The Room Exchange — Designer Furniture At Great Consignment Prices By Kathleen Schiop “The heart is in the home,” so the saying goes, and for most of us, our homes are our refuge from the stress and anxieties of the everyday world, so naturally we want our home to be a comfortable and beautiful place where we can relax. And, both new and established homeowners can find artistic and budgetary challenges to furnishing and accessorizing their homes, and that is where The Room Exchange, located in the Willow Bend Towne Centre Plaza (at the corner of SR 54 and Collier Pkwy. in Lutz (five miles west of Bruce B. Downs Blvd.) can help. The Room Exchange, a consignment furniture store, has been assisting customers with home furnishings for seven years, the first three at the Village Lake Shopping Center on U.S. 41 in Land O’Lakes, and for the past four at its current location. The Room Exchange sells a wide range of furniture and accessories consigned from private individuals and from builders’ model homes. Voted the 2011 Gold Winner for Best Consignment Store & Furniture Store in East & Central Pasco by the Media General Publications Florida Publishing Group, The Room Exchange represents quality furniture and service to its customers, some of whom

are both selling and buying their furniture and “knickknacks” at the store. Courtney Stone, the charismatic owner of The Room Exchange, says he comes by his chosen profession honestly. “My dad has a store in Ocala called Bargains and Treasures,” he says, “and I have pretty much spent the last ten years in this business. You’re not going to get rich doing this, but I just love it.” Two years after opening the store, Courtney was joined by wife Lesley¸ a former USF librarian who eventually left her job to work full time at the store. “We’re here all the time,” he laughs. “It’s definitely a family business.”

How It Works...For You!

So how does furniture consignment work? The Room Exchange sets the price of the item, based on the track record for selling of other similar items at the store. The consignment period is for 120 days and the business takes 50 percent of the sale, with the seller taking the other 50 percent. (Please note that some consignment stores take a more advantageous, for them, 60-40 split of consignment proceeds.) Every 30 days that the item doesn’t sell, The Room Exchange reduces the selling price by 10 percent from its original price. And, if the item goes the full 120 days without selling, it is marked half off. “We have an average turnaround on a

sale of about three weeks, and almost 90 percent of everything in the store sells within the first month, so our inventory changes constantly,” explains Courtney. “We sell a lot of sofas, coffee tables, and knickknacks (picture frames, small lamps, candlesticks and more), but there are some things we don’t take, such as fine china. So, before you consign, check our website (TheRoomExchangeOnline.com) to see what we Lesley and Courtney Stone of The Room Exchange in the do and don’t accept.” Willow Bend Towne Centre on S.R. 54 at Collier Pkwy. Everything is reasonably priced and the staff is so friendly and nice, they’ve practically become my second family.” Pressed for time? Check out TheRoom ExchangeOnline.com to see some of the latest furniture available at the showroom. The website even updates the pricing of each item, so you know exactly what an item will cost. Whether you need one piece of furniture, or a whole house-full, The Room Exchange offers a variety of different styles to meet your decorating needs. Don’t see what you want? The store also offers an affordable custom design service for those hard-to-furnish rooms in your home. Nora, a customer from Wesley Chapel, raves, “About 60 percent of my home has been furnished by The Room Exchange. Every room in my house has something from there, and I was able to use the personalized decorating service when I needed help. They are kind, fun,

easygoing people and their customer service is excellent.” When not at the store, owners Courtney Stone and his wife Lesley spend time running and swimming and spending time with their daughter Alyssa, who is finishing up her last year of nursing school at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Pasco Dental For Top Training, Technology & Patient Comfort By Gary Nager It’s probably not every day that you hear a native New Yorker say that he’s kindred spirits with a dentist who was born in Korea, but that’s the way I feel about Dr. Daniel Hwang, DDS, of Pasco Dental, located in the Wesley Chapel Executive Center on S.R. 54, a little more than a mile east of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. Although he was born in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Hwang was raised in Mt. Vernon, VA, and moved to Brooklyn, NY, for middle school and Queens, NY, for high school. He received both his Bachelor’s degree (in 1987) and his DDS degree (in 1991) from prestigious Columbia University in Manhattan and spent twelve years “learning the ropes of the dental business” with his brother, who had a thriving dental practice in Ft. Lee, NJ. Dr. Hwang then began opening his own chain of Price Dental offices in Flushing, Queens; Plainview, Long Island; Manhattan; Brooklyn; and Ft. Lee and Bergen Township, NJ. “I was traveling between six offices and not spending enough time with my family,” admits Dr. Hwang. He adds that it was because his older son was a top-level tennis player that Dr. Hwang and his family found Saddlebrook Preparatory (Prep) School , the tennis and

golf academy located inside the gates to Saddlebrook Resort Tampa, which is only a half-mile closer to BBD on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel than Dr. Hwang’s office. That son, 21-year-old Ben, went on to win a State No. 1 singles championship while at Saddlebrook Prep, although he is now a future dentist completing his undergraduate degree at the also-prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Hwang says Ben plans to attend the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA, and the good doctor even admits that Ben is a better tennis player than he is. Dr. Hwang also played for the tennis team at Columbia and has helped coach his son through the years. “I love coaching tennis,” says Dr. Hwang, who also has a 19-year-old daughter Nina at New York University and a 15year-old son Tommy who attends New Tampa’s Paul R. Wharton High. “But, most of all, my wife Jan and I really enjoy spending quality time with our kids. We’re lucky to still have one at home.” And of course, Dr. Hwang has a little more free time for his family now that he has only one state-of-the-art family dental office instead of six. The office is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. every weekday except Wednesday (when it is open noon-7 p.m.) and Dr. Hwang will make appointments for his patients before and after regular hours. “Convenience is important to me and to my patients,” he says. “But, we’ve also invested in outstanding technology for this office that my patients also appreciate.”

No Insurance Surprises, Too

Pasco Dental accepts most major dental insurance plans, but Dr. Hwang says his experience dealing with the insurance companies for 22 years allows him to prevent patients from being surprised when they get their bills. “I know what your plan will and won’t pay for and how much they reimburse for your procedure. “I’m so confident

that if the insurance company ends up not paying that amount, we won’t hold the patient responsible for the difference.” Dr. Hwang also promises that Pasco Dental is not “high-pressure dentistry.” “I have (New York) city savvy and common sense. I want you and your family to be confident that I want you to be a happy patient, so I will not try to get you to do work you don’t need or can’t afford. I always offer the best possible care possible with your financial concerns in mind.” I told you I had an affinity for the guy, didn’t I? Ciao! Italian Bistro — New Co-Owner, New Chef & Homemade Pasta! By Gary Nager Although we currently have some outstanding pizza places in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, we’ve never really had a great Italian restaurant. And, although some folks in the area seemed to enjoy Pagelli’s Italian Restaurant when it opened in the Shops at Wiregrass mall a couple of years ago, the owners decided a year or so ago to revamp the concept and change the name to Ciao! Italian Bistro. Well, according to Justin Fleming, the new chef and co-owner of Ciao!, neither Pagelli’s (and Justin worked for two years at the original Pagelli’s in Estero, FL) nor Ciao! was good enough, so he decided to move to the Tampa Bay area to start over and re-create Ciao! as a real, sit-down Italian restaurant that utilizes fresh ingredients and has dishes for men, and women, with family-friendly dishes and pricing. “A lot of the new menu (which was just unveiled to the public this week) is designed with women in mind,” says Justin, who isn’t afraid to speak his mind on the subject of Ciao!’s food. “Women usually make the decision about where to eat, so we always want to make sure the ladies are happy.” Ciao!, which still hosts the Wesley Chapel Rotary Club at noon for lunch every Wednesday, is open for lunch and dinner every day and Justin promises that the delicious new flavors our office sampled at an exclusive preview of the new menu will be representative of his passion for great food.
