Bickham Named Honorary Mayor At Chamber Awards Banquet! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC)’s annual “Excellence in Business Awards” banquet, which was held on September 14 at Hunter’s Green Country Club in New Tampa. But, I was definitely there in spirit as the Chamber once again showed why it is still the heart of the business community in Wesley Chapel. Congrats go out to the evening’s many award winners, especially to the new Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel, Cathy Bickham of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC)’s Chapel Home Health. Cathy also was one of the primary members of the fund-raising teams for previous Honorary Mayor winners John Negley of the FHWC Foundation and Troy Stevenson of Wesley Chapel Nissan, who will retain the title until January 1, 2014. Bickham, who raised a total of $4,000 to benefit both the Lion’s Club of Wesley Chapel and Support The Troops, Inc., beat out second place finisher Mary Ann Yaney of Central Bank on BBD in New Tampa, who will replace Kenneth Stewart of Integrated Security Consultants as Wesley Chapel’s Honorary Deputy Mayor. Yaney’s campaign helped the nonprofit

Tampa Leads & Philanthropy. “I’m very honored and proud to be representing the Wesley Chapel community as its Honorary Mayor,” Bickham says. “I’m looking forward to continuing to be involved in the community and growing its business.” Bickham also was named “Volunteer of the Year,” one of several awards given out by the evening emcee, Eric Johnson of Wesley Chapel Honda & Toyota. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know the Pasco County Economic Development Council (EDC) also has an annual award banquet, but I do know that at this year’s banquet — held Sept. 4 at Saddlebrook Resort Tampa on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel — businesses located in Wesley Chapel came home with a nice handful of trophies. Hosting the gala was Al Reuchel of Bay News 9, who helped the EDC give out a number of awards in a total of four categories — “Manufacturing Industry of the Year,” “Service/Distribution Industry of the Year,” “Technology” and “Special Contribution.”

An Embarrassing Correction, My Car & The Spelling Bee Choker? An editorial by Gary Nager when it was under different I was excited when District 2 Pasco County Commission candidate — and fellow Wesley Chapel (noon) Rotary Club member Mike Moore called me the day our last issue hit mailboxes...that is, excited until he pointed out one of the stupidest errors I’ve committed in my nearly 20 years of doing this job. Thankfully, it wasn’t a mistake that damaged Mike or his campaign in any way, it just made me look stupid as an editor and spoiled an otherwise outstanding story by assistant editor Matt Wiley, who really was not at fault, even though his name was on the story’s byline and mine wasn’t. I had confused Mike’s wife Lauren with someone we had previously written about who just happened to be Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco’s sister, and I put a note on Matt’s story to check that fact, which he did...and he told me my mistake, but I still somehow ended up saving the unedited version, so my question appeared in the print version of the story. I was able to quickly make the correction on our on-line edition (at WCNeighborhoodNews.com) the same day, but the damage was done. Mike forgave me, despite being rightfully annoyed when he saw my boo-boo, but Sheriff Nocco called to laughingly ask me, “So, what’s the big deal about being related to me? Am I such a terrible guy?” But again, sorry Mike.

pressure, as any parent whose kid is into spelling these days surely knows. So, even though I spelled words like “mellifluous” and “antidisestablishmentarianism” correctly, I choked on the word “foreign,” which I somehow incorrectly spelled “foriegn,” even though I knew how to spell the word. In short, I choked. But, when the call went out for spellers to compete with our Wesley Chapel Rotary Club “Bikers & Babes” squad at the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Catch the Buzz” Spelling Bee at “the Hive”/Spartan Manor in New Port Richey on Sept. 12, my teammates Dane Parilo, Leah Marchette and Vicki Hamilton were counting on me to be our “ringer.” And I did O.K., I guess. Our team finished in a five-way tie for third of 32 fourplayer teams, after I correctly spelled “gneiss” (a metamorphic rock; which eliminated at least 11 teams) and once had to correct the organizers, who misspelled the word “zeppelin” (they spelled it “zepplin”) in an earlier round. But somehow, I choked again. Vicki probably knew how to spell “peignoir,” but I overruled her with the incorrect “penoir,” or we would have finished alone in third. And to think, I was a French minor in college, yet both times I’ve choked, it was on an “eign” word of French origin. Yeesh.

I finally was able to get a new car, after putting nearly 170,000 miles on my 2007 red Honda Civic Si Coupe in more than six years, but if not for my friends at Wesley Chapel Honda, it probably wouldn’t have happened. Rotary president Eric Johnson works for both Wesley Chapel Honda & Toyota, but he had no influence in my situation. However, the way salesman Paul Hill, finance manager PJ Leary and desk manager Justin Hann handled my unique situation speaks loudly, as does Eric, about the type of people the dealership employs. I wasn’t easy to finance, I changed my mind mid-stream about the model of car I wanted to buy, and I had previously had a very bad experience at the same dealership

The man behind numerous business and auto burglaries in the Wesley Chapel

area is behind bars, following his arrest on September 16. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Ramon Junior Rivera, 24, a convicted burglary felon (for burglary and weapons possession) who was released from prison last July, is the man behind at least ten business burglaries stretching from Wesley Chapel to Zephyrhills and even into Hillsborough County, deputies say. The PCSO arrest reRamon Rivera port states that Rivera, who lives in Meadow Pointe, began his crime spree as far back as June of this year. “Hopefully, business owners feel some relief with this guy behind bars,” says PCSO spokesperson Doug Tobin. “This is a significant break in the case. We’re working with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) and Zephyrhills Police Department (ZPD) because we believe that he worked in those areas, as well.” Tobin says that after being arrested, Rivera confessed to ten burglaries that took place in both Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills. So far, Rivera has been charged with three auto burglaries, as well as burglaries at the Subway and Tokyo Grill & Sushi on Eiland Blvd. in eastern Wesley Chapel and burglarizing Latin Twist, the Hungry Greek and Dickey’s BBQ Pit, all of which are located in the Shoppes of Wesley Chapel shopping plaza across Bruce B. Man Caught With Pants Down Gets DUI

After being found with his pants down and under the influence in his vehicle that was parked in the middle of the street, a Wesley Chapel man has been released from the Pasco County jail. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Benjamin Chad Mishoe, 36, of Road Runner Rd. in eastern Wesley Chapel, was arrested at 5:45 a.m. on September 14 when a deputy found him sleeping in the driver’s seat of his running vehicle about half a mile from his home. The arrest report states that, in addition to driving a vehicle with several empty beer bottles, Mishoe’s pants were pulled partially down and that his genitals were exposed. The deputy tapped the window until Mishoe woke up and then had him perform field sobriety tests, during which the deputy said Mishoe showed various signs of impairment. Pair Charged In Stabbing Murder On I-75

Two men are in custody after allegedly stabbing a man in a car while driving, just north of S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), on September 7, an offduty deputy was traveling south on I-75 when he noticed a silver Acura sedan parked on the northbound shoulder of the interstate. The deputy doubled back and found Justin P. Gonzalez, 22, of Crossville, TN, and Jesse M. Blair, 23, of Lakeland, at the vehicle, along with Leon A. Mascorro, 20, of Bristol, FL, deceased in the passenger seat with several apparent stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. The off-duty deputy detained the suspects, PCSO says. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the three were driving north on I75, when the driver, GonJesse Blair zalez, handed a knife to Blair, who was sitting in the rear, passenger-side seat. Blair stabbed Mascorro several times, before handing the knife back to Gonzalez, who also stabbed the victim several times. Fugitive Dies In Shootout With Authorities

A fugitive wanted for violent sexual batteries on multiple women, as well as several armed home invasions during the early morning hours of September 6 is dead, following a 13-hour manhunt in the Tampa Palms area, a high-speed chase through Temple Terrace and a desperate shootout with local law enforcement authorities Choppers buzzed overhead in the southern section of Tampa Palms and over the University of South Florida (USF) area on September 5, as law enforcement officials searched the wooded, conservation areas for 24year-old Charlie Christopher “Chris” Bates, a dangerous fugitive facing Chris Bates six counts of armed sexual battery, eight counts of armed kidnapping and one count of armed home invasion, with more charges possible, if the suspect weren’t already dead. New Tampa schools were kept on modified lockdown throughout the day, while “scores” of authorities with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO)

Local Residents Taken In Massive Drug Operation

A recent, large-scale drug sting operation by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has resulted in more than 50 arrests in just 24 hours, including two Wesley Chapel residents, each charged with dealing in controlled substances. As part of the PCSO Vice Narcotics Unit’s “Operation: Balderstone,” on September 5, 55 arrests were made across Pasco County, including Lazaro “Lachi” Martin, 23, of the Riverside Crossing community on S.R. 54, and Heather Marie Short, 35, of Quail Hollow, who were arrested after selling prescription pills and other drugs to undercover PCSO deputies. PCSO reports that on three separate occasions, the most recent on September 5, Martin was in possession of varying amounts of MDMA — or “Molly,” as it is popularly called. During the two previous incidents, Martin sold a combined amount of nearly 35 grams of the substance to undercover deputes in exchange for more than $1,000. Martin was charged with two counts of possession of MDMA, one count of sale of methamphetamine and one count of trafficking in MDMA. He was released from the Pasco County jail on a $70,000 bond. Short was arrested on September 5 for selling Xanax and Suboxone, a medication used to treat opiate addiction, to undercover deputies on three occasions since January. In total, Short sold 18 Suboxone “packs” and one Xanax pill to deputies for a total of $235...Short remains in custody on three counts each of possession of, and sale of, a controlled substance. Man Arrested For Trespassing, Eating At WCH

Most kids can’t wait to be out of school. However, one Wesley Chapel man is in custody after hanging out on Wesley Chapel High (WCH)’s campus after dropping his brother off at the school. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Austin Podosowski, 20, of Angus Valley, had dropped his younger brother off at WCH around 7:20 a.m. on August 20, when he decided to park and walk onto the school’s Wells Rd. campus without making the school aware of his presence, which is Pasco County School District policy. Two other non-students waited in the tan Lincoln sedan in the parking lot, the WCH resource deputy says. Bid Recieved For S.R. 54/56 Toll Road By Matt Wiley Interest from private firms is building regarding the possible construction of a toll road that would connect Wesley Chapel to western Pasco County. According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), a Request for Proposals (RFP) was opened on August 23, after the agency received an unsolicited bid from International Infrastructure Partners (IIP), LLC — a group of investors and infrastructure construction companies — to lease right-of-way to fund, design, build, operate and maintain a toll road with elevated and “at-grade” lanes along the more than 33-mile stretch of S.R. 54/56 from Wesley Chapel to New Port Richey. “(FDOT) is very intrigued,” says FDOT spokeswoman Kris Carson. “But, this is all still in the beginning stages. Our Tallahassee office has already received calls for information from several other firms.” Carson explains that the bid, which was written by Gerald Stanley — who has more than 45 years in the state’s highway and bridge construction industry and serves as a consultant to FDOT and other engineering companies and contractors — was received on June 11, but it was not released until August 23. Since the company sent in a proposal, by law, FDOT had to open an RFP period to see if other companies were interested in the project. The period for proposals is set to close on October 23. In its initial proposal, IIP describes the project being built in phases, the first right here

in Wesley Chapel, from Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. west to the Suncoast Pkwy. toll road, followed by a second phase that would connect to U.S. 19 in New Port Richey, a total of about 33 miles. The firm also considers further connecting the proposed toll road east to U.S. 301. An FDOT release states that this would be the first of its kind in the state, as no other toll road has been privately funded and constructed entirely in state-owned right-of-way. Because of this, IIP says that the road literally would cost the taxpayers nothing to build. Instead, Guggenheim Securities, LLC, a capital partner of IIP, would fund the project, Stanley writes in his proposal. The estimated cost of the project and the amount that IIP would spend to lease the right-of-way was not disclosed in the proposal. If IIP’s proposal were approved, the actual construction of the project would be done by Edmonton, Alberta (Canada)-based PCL Construction, which constructed the fly-over onramp onto I-75 from BBD and currently is working on the I-4 Crosstown Connector project near the Port of Tampa. In his proposal, Stanley touts that the project will create thousands of jobs in the state, provide critical infrastructure ahead of the current planned timeline and at no upfront costs, while providing connections to existing State and County roads to reduce congestion and begin the northern loop around the Tampa Bay area. Small World Pediatrics Takes Care Of Your Kids From Diapers To Degrees By Matt Wiley Watching children develop from newborns to college scholars is a joy usually reserved for parents. However, José Jiménez, M.D., the one physician who has been seeing all of the patients at Small World Pediatrics (now located jut north of S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel) for the past decade, has been right there with the parents in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area help those kids stay healthy as they have grown and matured from babies and young children into teenagers and young adults. Now located (since 2010) in the Windguard Professional Center across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), Small World Pediatrics is a fullservice pediatrics practice that cares for children from the time that they are born through their college years (usually to about age 21). Among the services Dr. Jiménez provides are physical exams for school and sports, vaccinations for daycare, school and college entry, and treating a wide range of pediatric illnesses. Dr. Jiménez originally opened Small World Pediatrics in 2003 in the Northwood plaza on BBD near Target, about a mile closer to the Hillsborough County line than his new office. He says that becoming a pediatric physician is something

that he knew he wanted to do since his sophomore year at prestigious Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. “I had studied engineering my first two years because of my love for math and science, but I felt I would be happier using my scientific knowledge caring for people on a day-to-day basis,” Dr. Jiménez explains. “It turns out that I was right. I love my job, and I love coming to work every day.” Dr. Jiménez earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in 1992, after transferring from Cornell during his junior year. He earned his M.D. degree from the University of South Florida (USF) College of Medicine in 1996, and completed his pediatric residency at USF in 2000. “I chose pediatrics because I love working with children,” Dr. Jimenez says. “I get to smile every time I walk into a patient’s room.” Dr. Jiménez adds that he really wanted to live in and be a part of the community where he was practicing. “I decided to open a practice in Wesley Chapel because my wife and I loved the area,” says the Meadow Pointe resident. “Wesley Chapel has a small town feel, yet it is very close to the city of Tampa and just across the county line from New Tampa. Downs (BBD) Blvd. Although he was born in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Hwang was raised in Mt. Vernon, VA, and moved to Brooklyn, NY, for middle school and Queens, NY, for high school. He received both his Bachelor’s degree (in 1987) and his DDS degree (in 1991) from prestigious Columbia University in Manhattan and spent twelve years “learning the ropes of the dental business” with his brother, who had a thriving dental practice in Ft. Lee, NJ. Dr. Hwang then began opening his own chain of Price Dental offices in Flushing, Queens; Plainview, Long Island; Manhattan; Brooklyn; and Ft. We’re lucky to still have one at home.” And of course, Dr. Hwang has a little more free time for his family now that he has only one state-of-the-art family dental office instead of six. By Gary Nager Although we currently have some outstanding pizza places in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, we’ve never really had a great Italian restaurant. And, although some folks in the area seemed to enjoy Pagelli’s Italian Restaurant when it opened in the Shops at Wiregrass mall a couple of years ago, the owners decided a year or so ago to revamp the concept and change the name to Ciao! Italian Bistro. Well, according to Justin Fleming, the new chef and co-owner of Ciao!, neither Pagelli’s (and Justin worked for two years at the original Pagelli’s in Estero, FL) nor Ciao! was good enough, so he decided to move to the Tampa Bay area to start over and re-create Ciao! as a real, sit-down Italian restaurant that utilizes fresh ingredients and has dishes for men, and women, with family-friendly dishes and pricing. “A lot of the new menu (which was just unveiled to the public this week) is designed with women in mind,” says Justin, who isn’t afraid to speak his mind on the subject of Ciao!’s food. “Women usually make the decision about where to eat, so we always want to make sure the ladies are happy.” Ciao!, which still hosts the Wesley Chapel Rotary Club at noon for lunch every Wednesday, is open for lunch and dinner every day and Justin promises that the delicious new flavors our office sampled at an exclusive preview of the new menu will be representative of his passion for great food.

Angry Chair Gets Wet Zoning

On August 1, Angry Chair Brewing, owned by Wesley Chapel residents Ryan Dowdle and Shane Mozur, as well as former Cigar City pilot brewer Ben Romano, was approved for a wet zoning license by the Tampa City Council for its future brewery and tasting room location in Tampa’s Historic Seminole Heights neighborhood. Dowdle says that, if all goes according to plan, he hopes to be serving beers to the public at the new Angry Chair Tasting Room, which will be located at 6401 N. Florida Ave., by early 2014. — MW
