hen roughly 5,000 residents in Pebble Creek, Live Oake, Cross Creek and other communities located in unincorporated Hillsborough County lost their City of Tampa fire rescue service in 2018, Hillsborough County turned to nearby Pasco County for service. With a new mayor in office, they have now turned back to Tampa. On September 18, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) agreed by a 7-0 vote to finalize an agreement with the City of Tampa to restore its fire service to the area, which former Mayor Bob Buckhorn ended in 2017 after demanding the county pay roughly five times what it was already paying. Under the new proposed agreement, the county will pay the city $600,000 a year for service from the four stations located in New Tampa. It also gave a 90-day notice to Pasco County which, in lieu of the City of Tampa, has been providing service for the unincorporated area since 2018. “This is great news for New Tampa,” said Hillsborough County commissioner Ken Hagan, who represents the New Tampa area in District 2. “Restoring Tampa’s fire rescue service to unincorporated New Tampa was my No.1 priority. Congrats To The North Tampa Bay Chamber & A Neighborhood News Online Update An editorial by Gary Nager Big congratulations go out to the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce (NTBC) and its president and CEO (and, I’m proud to say, my good friend) Hope Allen for bringing home some impressive hardware from the annual Florida Association of Chamber Professional annual conference. The NTBC was named the 2019 Chamber of the Year from among the 300 Chambers of Commerce throughout the state of Florida. “This designation is an absolute honor, as we are able to showcase our organization, its members, and the entire team as an elite chamber,” Hope said in her formal email announcement to the NTBC membership about the award. “Among the many accomplishments our organization has had over the years, the three major initiatives that set us a part were the development of AdventHealth Center Ice, Metro Development’s Connected Cities, and the RADDSports project (aka the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County).” Along with those accomplishments, Hope said she and her team of Chamber professionals were excited to be recognized for the acquisition of two chambers within the last five years that led to an official logo and name change. “This award is a testament to not only our staff and our Board of Directors, but to our amazing members who make up our thriving community.” Hope also was recognized as an individual who has dedicated 15 years of service to the chamber profession. The hard-working NTBC president showed off the Chamber of the Year hardware (left photo above) at the Chamber’s most recent Final Friday networking

NTBC chair-elect Dr. Kevin O’Farrell of Pasco Hernando State College's Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch gave Hope big props for her efforts on the Chamber’s behalf and Hope actually gave yours truly and the this publication some love, telling me that, “Without you and the Neighborhood News always promoting everything we do, we would never have been able to win this award.” I’m not sure I agree, because Hope and the NTBC have been so influential and ever-present with regards to everything that is happening business- and development-wise in New Tampa and especially, Wesley Chapel, that it definitely deserved to win on its own merits — but I will take it!

New Tampa Mosque Town Hall Meeting Focuses On Big Issues By JOHN C. COTEY

john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Luis Viera’s New Tampa town halls are generally hyper-local affairs. The District 7 Tampa City Council member (and usually a guest or two) are asked about things like Kinnan-Mansfield, traffic along Bruce B. Downs, new additions to our local parks and everything from a pothole over there to a slow light over here. On Sept. 21, however, Viera’s town hall, in conjunction with the Islamic Society of New Tampa, at the Daarus Salaam Mosque on Morris Bridge Rd., just north of Cross Creek Blvd., broadened the councilman’s normal town hall fare. Along with a few questions about traffic safety near the bustling mosque, especially in the mornings where more than 100 children are headed to school near busy (and narrow) Morris Bridge Rd., the conversation circulated around such weighty topics as religious and social tolerance, affordable housing, gun violence, school funding and healthcare. “I thought it went really well,” Viera said. “I thought there was a lot of energy and people seemed enthused to be there.” The town hall, moderated by CAIRFlorida's Aida Mackic, was Viera's 14th in the North Tampa district he represents. It included a wide spectrum of guests, which likely prompted some of the larger-issue questions. Fentrice Driskell, the Florida House District 63 representative (which includes New Tampa), Hillsborough County District 7 (county-wide) Commissioner Kimberly Overman and Hillsborough County sheriff Chad Chronister all joined Viera on the panel. “My heart is bursting with pride to be here,” Driskell told a crowd of about 100. “I’m so excited, but I’m trying to play it cool.” It was a predominantly Muslim crowd, but Viera said those who worship at the mosque and live in the area are an

ings of Muslims earlier this year in New Zealand, but also said he would like to see a deputy on site in the morning when the children are vulnerable. Chronister sympathized with many in attendance. “There are 4,000 members of the sheriff’s office that want to make sure no one has to live in fear,” he said. He drew one of the loudest ovations of the afternoon when he added, “You should be able to worship in peace, regardless of your faith.” That led to a discussion about gun control, namely the dangers posed by access to assault rifles, as well as a 12-yearold in the crowd suggesting lawmakers focus on the mental health issues of students who suffer from harassment and fear of bullying in schools. “This is a community concerned about tolerance and safety a bit more acutely than other folks,” Viera said. Driskell tackled questions on the lack of education funding, one of her primary interests as a legislator. “I am ready...give me the ball!,” Driskell said when the first Safety From Violence But, the safety of worshippers was on question about education was asked. important part of the community. “Potholes hold no party or religious affiliation,” Viera said. “A pothole annoys the Southern Baptist as much as it annoys the Muslim.” As you might expect from a predominantly Muslim crowd, there were concerns raised about Islamophobia, guns and the protection of the mosque. Dr. Adel Eldin, MD, a Brooksville cardiologist, laid out a laundry list of items mosque members would like to see from its elected officials — yellow lights to slow down traffic in the morning as children make their way to school, better fire rescue service and for the mosque, which has a Thonotosassa addressed in unincorporated Hillsborough County, to be incorporated into the City of Tampa so it could be on the city’s sewer system. Along with the recent Islamic Society of New Tampa purchase of six acres of land adjacent to the mosque for expansion, Eldin said his list of requests were critical.

who went on to graduate from Harvard, Driskell said more help — both financially and in the classroom — needs to be provided to teachers across the state in order to retain them. She said she watched the joy of teaching fade from her mother after a 35-year career in the classroom. Since being elected last November (beating incumbent Shawn Harrison), Driskell said that she has witnessed firsthand just how tough that fight for more funding for public schools can be. “I don’t like to make things partisan,” she said, “but I think 90 percent of the time in state legislature, we agree on most of the issues and most of the bills we vote on will pass through unanimously. But, for whatever reason, public education has become so highly politicized. It falls into two camps: those who favor public schools, and those on the side of charter schools and vouchers for private schools.” Driskell said she is not necessarily against charter schools or vouchers, “but not at the expense of public schools.” Overman and Hillsborough County District 3 School Board member Cindy Stuart, who was in attendance, also said more funding was central to fixing what ails schools and their teachers, but the answers may have to come from the community. Chronister agreed. As the vice chair of the Citizen Oversight Committee for the education referendum that passed last year, Chronister touted many of the school projects that the $23 million raised by a the new one-cent sales tax that are making things better for students and teachers. Affordable healthcare, affordable housing and building a stronger community also were touched on in the wide-ranging, two-hour forum, and at the end, Viera said it accomplished what he had hoped. “I do it because I think it’s important,” Viera said. “There were a lot of legitimate concerns, not paranoia, raised, and addressing them and showing that their local politicians have their backs makes the community stronger and better off.”

Community Comes Together To Honor 9/11’s Heroes

or most Americans, the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, will live on forever. Where you were, what you were doing, who you were with and how the horrifying sight of the World Trade Center’s twin towers crumbling to earth left you feeling afterwards will likely never really go away. The memories linger, and on Sept. 7, at the dedication of Pasco County’s first permanent 9-11 memorial inside the food court area of the Tampa Premium Outlets, hundreds gathered to share their recollections and honor those who died that day. Retired FDNY Lieutenant Mike Besignano, who now lives in New Tampa, was on hand to take in the memorial and the community support. “Every year it’s difficult,” Besignano said. “I’m happy to see this (memorial), I’m sad but it makes me happy at the same time and people should never forget the sacrifices that were made and are continuing to be made.” Retired New York City EMT Ste-

phen Spelman lived through that day, knew many of those who died trying to save others. Spelman says he was standing at the foot of the north tower after it was hit and was ordered by his lieutenant to conduct a search of nearby vehicles. “What he did in that moment was actually save my life,” Spelman told the gathered crowd. As he was returning from that task, Spelman said the north tower collapsed. Because of where he was located, Spelman was able to take off running north on West St. to avoid the falling wreckage. Many of Spelman’s co-workers, including the lieutenant who gave the order, ran east on Vesey St. Their bodies were never recovered. Like so many who were at Ground Zero that fateful day, Spelman hasn’t really recovered, either. He retired from the fire department in 2009, and moved to the Wesley Chapel area in 2010. Years went by as he tried to cope with the psychological burden of losing so many of his friends and co-workers, as well as the lingering

health problems associated with what he and so many other surviving first responders endured that day. In the Spring of 2017, Spelman says he got a call from the Motts Military Museum in Groveport, OH, which asked him to come tell his story. The event was set for the 16th anniversary of 9/11, but fate and another disaster would prevent the former EMT trainer from attending. Hurricane Irma tore through central Florida on September 11, 2017, causing billions of dollars of damage and taking the lives of 129 people. Florida officials ordered 6.5 million residents to evacuate. Spelman never made that trip up to Ohio. A few weeks later, however, he got a package in the mail from the Motts Museum — a piece of the ladder from the Ladder 18 Truck from Battalion 4 in lower Manhattan, the station also known as Fort Pitt. “At first, I saw it (the piece of the ladder) as a burden, but it wound up being a real gift,” Spelman says. The ladder segment awakened something in him, spurring Spelman to try to find the right home for it, where

it hopefully would do some good. “I didn’t want it to be in my house,” he said. ‘’It’s an important piece of history.” Spelman began approaching different places with the idea to create some kind of memorial around the piece. It became an ongoing endeavor. After being turned down on multiple occasions, Spelman finally found some interest at the mall. “I finally got the ear of the Tampa Premium Outlets (management) and gave them a brief history about me and about the ladder,” Spelman said. “They said they’d see if they could help and gave me a list of things to do. I was looking for sponsors to create the display and it was frustrating. I didn’t think it was ever going to get done.”

Help From An Old Friend

Enter former NYPD officer and Spelman’s FDNY colleague Chris Casella. Casella was trained by and worked with Spelman and also came to Florida in 2002 after retiring from the NYPD. (Note-Casella was already on limited duty due to injury before 9/11.)

As it turns out, Casella, the current president of the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Noon (which meets Wednesdays at noon at Omari’s Grill inside Lexington Oaks Golf Club), was already in talks with the outlet mall to launch a Sept. 11 Memorial Run/Walk on Sept. 7. “From there, it didn’t take much,” Spelman said. “We started the ball rolling and at first we didn’t think people would take interest.” He and Casella would both end up being pleasantly surprised. “I can’t tell you the amount of emails I got, and phone calls from people wanting to be involved in it,” Casella said. “People were coming out in droves wanting to get involved. It was really uplifting and I believe it helped the community in a big way.” Hundreds of local residents rallied around the idea of honoring 9/11’s surviving heroes Saturday morning in the presence of dozens of first responders from both Hillsborough and Pasco Counties and beyond. The kickoff event was the onemile Fun Run/Walk (photo above), where nearly 300 runners and walkers took a lap around the main interior road around the mall. After the Fun Run/Walk, at exactly 8:46 a.m., the Rotary Club’s bell was rung to commemorate the first plane striking the north tower.

ing’s outdoor events. Spectators then crowded into the food court for the ribbon cutting of the new memorial. Spelman told his story about 9/11 and the heroes who did not live to tell about it. He introduced Penelope Bastidas, whose husband, Lieutenant Mario Bastidas, was one of the thousands who perished that day. Penelope, who flew in from New York for the ceremony, gave a brief, but emotional address to the audience before cutting the ceremonial ribbon officially opening the memorial. From there, the hallway leading out of the food court to the soda machines and bathrooms was opened and spectators began filing past the new memorial, which incorporated Spelman’s small section of Ladder 18 with a wall wrap that said “HONORING OUR HEROES.” “When Chris told me they were going to give me a wall by the bathroom, at first, I didn’t really think that was a great thing,” Spelman said. “But it wound up being that with these soda and gum ball machines down there, these kids (at the mall) are going to ask mom and dad, ‘What is that?,’ and it’s our responsibility to educate them.”

Taylor Morrison Breaks Ground On 55+ Community In Wiregrass Ranch By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Home builder Taylor Morrison’s Esplanade series — which provides “resort lifestyle experiences” for its residents — has already proven to be popular in a number of Tampa Bay locations, including New Tampa. A new development planned for the Wiregrass Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI) could take that popularity to another level. Last month, Taylor Morrison broke ground on Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch, which will feature more than 850 single-family and detached villa homes and will be Wesley Chapel’s first 55-and-over community since Williamsburg was originally built as an age-restricted community in the 1970s. The new community will be located in the heart of the Wiregrass Ranch DRI, between State Roads 54 and 56 and east of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch will be adjacent to the under-construction Wiregrass Ranch Blvd., which will run north and south from S.R. 56 to S.R. 54. Originally, the project was called Valencia under a different builder, but when that fell through last year, Taylor Morrison was approached and jumped at the chance to take over the development. “The location and the size of it were two of the things attractive about this opportunity,” said Doug Miller, division president of Taylor Morrison’s operations in Tampa. “To have this lifestyle community in Wesley Chapel is really attractive for us. There are a lot of things to do there, there’s a hospital, shopping and entertainment. It really made this location key for us.” Phase One, which was approved for construction in May, will have 169 singlefamily, attached homes. Scott Himelhoch, vice president of land acquisition for Taylor Morrison, unveiled many of the plans and amenities for

Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch at a North Tampa Bay Chamber Economic Development Briefing at Hunter’s Green Country Club on Aug. 29. With construction under way, the 55-over community hopes to hold a grand opening of its amenity center sometime late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter of 2020. That was good news for some of the Realtors in attendance at Hunter’s Green, who said they are in need of more product to sell to eager buyers. Taylor Morrison’s Esplanade offerings generally offer features like tile roofs and lush landscaping as standard features. Because it will be building in an area that has ample greenspace, walking paths and nature will be incorporated into the layout. Although the community will be mostly restricted to residents ages 55-andover (80 percent must fall in that category, with the other 20 percent required to be 45-and-older), Taylor Morrison will be building homes ranging in size from 1,7003,500 square feet, recognizing that not every older family wants to downsize and that many still want to be the central hub for holiday and family gatherings. Taylor Morrison has Esplanade communities either built or in the process of building out in New Tampa (350 homes just south of the Hillsborough-Pasco county line and west of Grand Hampton) and Starkey Ranch (500 homes) in Odessa. The Wiregrass Ranch community, however, is expected to be the crown jewel of the Esplanades in the Tampa market. Himelhoch touted many of the offerings that will make Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch a popular pick for homebuyers. Because Esplanades seek to give residents a boutique resort living experience, a full-time lifestyle manager is on staff in every community, operating as part-cruise director, part-concierge. The lifestyle manager helps create wellness programs and social events. A loaded calendar offers things like dinner dances, concerts, clubs, groups and

even football watch parties. The concierge service is an added plus. The resort-style pool will offer towels, food and beverage service, as well the ability to make dinner reservations without ever having to leave your poolside seat. Taylor Morrison has been very active in Wesley Chapel. In the last few months, the homebuilder has completed two new communities in Wesley Chapel — Woodside Trace, a 52-townhome community

located on County Line Rd. approximately two miles west of Bruce B. Downs, and Chapel Trace, an 87-unit single-familyhome community north of S.R. 54 on Boyette Rd. The Latest On The Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus Of Pasco County! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com After years of staring at renderings and blue prints and imagining what the new sports complex in Wiregrass Ranch will actually look like, general manager and RADD Sports CEO Richard Blalock’s vision is now coming into focus. The Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County is no longer just a large patch of cleared land, it has gone vertical, and the current schedule is looking towards a July 10, 2020, completion. After three failed efforts since 2001 to build an athletic complex on the property located northeast of the Shops at Wiregrass and two miles east of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., off S.R. 56, the 98,000-sq.ft. indoor gymnasium is on its way. Blalock, however, is not letting his excitement get the best of him. While the $45-million facility — which will share a campus with a full-service, Marriottbranded, 120-room Residence Inn hotel featuring a rooftop bar — is a big part of transforming the Wesley Chapel area (and Pasco County) into even more of a sports tourism hotbed, he intends to proceed slowly out of the gate. “We’ve got people lined up that want to sign a contract now,” says Blalock. He is proceeding, though, like a quarterback with plenty of time on the clock.

(Above) A recent drone photo of the progress on the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County. It’s not that he doubts the projection. But, he’s leery of Florida’s cranky wet weather that often slows down construction, most recently during Hurricane Dorian’s trip through the Atlantic. “We had to take all of the cranes down,” says Jannah Nager, who was recently hired as RADD Sports’ director of marketing after working for more than four years as the marketing and events coordinator at the Pasco Education Foundation. She

is the wife of Neighborhood News publisher Gary Nager. With more bad weather lurking, it may not be the last time the cranes and other equipment have to be removed from the site for safety reasons. “Everybody is beating us up, ‘When are you going to start booking events?,’” Blalock says. “But, I will not start booking events until after this hurricane season. Once the roof is on, or the side

panels, I’ll be more comfortable.” Blalock says a new facility in North Carolina jumped the gun on its opening and, thanks to Hurricane Dorian, had to postpone that opening. “That’s the last thing we can afford to have happen here,” he says. By October of 2020, Blalock says, he hopes to have events ready to go at the new facility, which broke ground in June of 2018. He hopes to book at least 25 events in the first 12 months the sports facility is running. Nager’s job is to help spread the word in the community while marketing the facility to sponsors. “Jannah knows the community, she knows the people, she knows the ins and outs, and she knows the politicians,” says Blalock. “We need somebody that knows community and is popular in the community. That makes our job so much easier.” The primary sports at the new complex will be basketball and volleyball, and cheerleading is expected to be the third core sport at the facility, which can run eight basketball courts or 16 volleyball courts at any one time. There also is room for multiple mats for wrestling and judo tournaments, with gymnastics also a possibility. Blalock said he even has been contacted by a youth soccer team in the United Kingdom that is interested in training for a few weeks at the new facility, which will have two outdoor soccer

fields and plenty of room to train inside if the weather turns bad.

Local Use During The Week! Weekend sports tournaments, however, will be just part of the big picture at the new facility. Blalock says there will be plenty of sports programming for local athletes to participate in, too. He says there will be a three-tier system for each of its three core sports — Academy, Competitive and Development — which will allow opportunities for all level of athletes starting at the age of 9 and going all the way through high school The Academy will be for training elite athletes for travel teams, but also will include an educational component and

require participants to maintain a certain grade-point-average. He says the sports will be programmed to not interfere with the local high school seasons. “The ultimate goal is to change the culture of how these kids are trained,” Blalock says, adding that it is well-documented that youth sports are susceptible to being overrun by overzealous coaches and parents, as well as entitled athletes. The Competitive program also will be in-house, with three days a week of practices and games — and the chance for advancement to the Academy level, Blalock says. The Developmental program will be “quasi-recreational,” according to Blalock. Volunteer coaches will run the teams, although those coaches will have plenty of

access to paid coaches on the complex’s paid sports staff to help develop more drills and gameplans. The programming also will be competitively priced with the local market, according to Blalock. For those who like sports but don’t play for whatever reason, the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus also will offer a Sports Administration & Hospitality program, where kids can gather data, travel with the teams and serve as managers. And, now that ground has broken on a nearby 55-over community in Wiregrass Ranch (see story on pg. 8), more programming for older residents also may be in the offing, like pickleball and Rock Steady Boxing for those with Parkinson’s disease. There may even be room for some golf cart

parking spots, Blalock says, as he anticipates that many in the Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch community will want to drive their carts, instead of their cars, to the facility. In addition to its youth and adult sports programs, the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County is able to provide space for conventions, banquets and other non-sports events. The Neighborhood News already is looking to host a major event at the complex sometime next summer. Blalock and Nager are putting together sponsorship packages now, and also are accepting resumes for positions, although Blalock stresses that the actual hiring process is likely several months away. Business Notes: Aldi Taking A Look, A New ER & Apartments By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Shoppers could have yet another choice for groceries (and other things) along Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., as discount grocer Aldi is eyeing the location previously occupied by Ruby Tuesday. Aldi is asking the county to rezone the property the vacant restaurant sits on at 17520 BBD Blvd. so it can build one of its popular discount grocery stores on the site. That hearing, however, won’t happen this year. According to the City of Tampa, the rezoning hearing is tentatively set to be heard on January 16, 2020, as long as Aldi has a certified, legal site plan by then. Discount grocery store Aldi (above) is considering building a new store at the old site of the Ruby Tuesday restaurant at the corner of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and Highwoods Preserve Pkwy. Behind the new ER and stretching all the way to Trout Creek Dr., a new apartment complex is planned on 22 acres of land. While it is expected to break ground by the end of this year, the new development — called Trout Creek Landings in plans filed with the county — will have six 3-story buildings with 176 total units, four 2-story buildings with 20 single-family townhomes, and a one-story clubhouse. expected to open in December at The Grove at Wesley Chapel. The craft brewery will be Wesley Chapel’s first, and will operate in the “main street” area of The Grove. The 8,400-sq.-ft. space will boast a 2,100-sq.-ft. production brewery, a 1,900-sq.-ft. tap room, a 550-sq.-ft. outdoor patio and 1,850 sq. ft. of private event space. DBAA will offer a full spectrum of beers, from lagers to stouts to sours, but its first flagship beer will be called Chappie’s Lager. The brewery also will offer a food truck-style kitchen (with 6-8 items), games and potentially, an outdoor beer garden. “This will not only be a craft brewery, but something that offers the local culture of Tampa without having to drive 30 minutes,” says Clarke. “We have a large amount of nationally-syndicated restaurant concepts out here in Wesley Chapel, but not too many locally owned places.”

Cypress Creek Town Center Area Still Rockin’

When it came to choosing a name for the brewery, Clarke wanted something local. The Wesley Chapel area was historically referred to as “Double Branch” for the twin creeks that flowed through the property owned by the Boyettes, one of the area’s founding families. The Double Branch Church (now the First Baptist Church of Wesley Chapel) was the center of the community. Clarke also is thrilled to be part of a possible revival of The Groves. Developer Mark Gold of Mishorim Investments purchased the shopping center for $63 million last month and has lofty plans to turn it into something rivaling Armature Works or Sparkman Wharf in South Tampa. “He’s got some big ideas,” Clarke said. “I’m pretty excited that we’re going to be a part of it.”

The S.R. 56 corridor just west of I-75 continues to be the hottest area in what we like to call Wesley Chapel. Here’s a few projects that are picking up steam: * On the north side of S.R. 56, between Bahama Breeze and the Hyatt Place Hotel & Conference Center, a La-Z-Boy furniture store has recently broken ground. Headquartered in Monroe, MI, La-Z-Boy is best known for its recliners, although it offers a complete line of furniture. The Wesley Chapel store will be 13,650 sq. ft., and will soon have company, as a nearby 15,664-sq.-ft. parcel is being developed for retail/restaurant. The nearest La-Z-Boy showroom is located on N. Dale Mabry Hwy., and there also are locations in New Port Richey, Brandon and Clearwater. La-Z-Boy will be the fifth furniture store to open in roughly a 4-mile stretch on S.R. 56, joining Rooms To Go (intersection of S.R. 56 and BBD), Ashley, Haverty’s and the 70,000-sq.-ft. El Dorado Furniture, which has not yet begun construction in Brightwork Crossing (next to the new Wawa, where 54, 56 and Wesley Chapel Blvd. meet). * Main Event, which will offer bowling, laser tag and a restaurant/bar, and the KISS-themed restaurant/bar

Rock N’ Brews are both under construction on S.R. 56, east of the Tampa Premium Outlets. Rock ‘N Brews received approval from county planners to begin construction on Aug. 30, while Main Event has been under construction since July. * Also potentially sharing the same space with the two eateries will be Cigars International, which filed site plans on Sept. 5 with the county to build a 9,497-sq. ft. store according to permitting records. Cigars International, according to its website, is “the King Kong of cigar companies.” It was established in 1996 in Bethlehem, PA, and deals in all things related to cigars. It has a large online presence, and a Wesley Chapel location would only be its fifth store/center, joining two others in Bethlehem, one in Hamburg, PA and one in The Colony, TX. The store would be flanked by the two roads used to get to Main Event, Rock ‘N Brews and the Saltgrass Steakhouse, which is still only in the planning stages. * Meanwhile, north of S.R. 54, representatives from 7-Eleven were scheduled to meet with Pasco County planners on Sept. 16 to propose building a 3,500-sq.-ft. gas station/convenience store on the southeast corner of Overpass Rd. and Boyette Rd. — JCC

Putting Her Best (Barefoot) Foot Forward To Deliver Pain Relief NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS STAFF Bad backs, wonky knees and tight hips beware: Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) SaRee Purcell may be petite and soft spoken, but when she walks on your back, there’s not an ache or a sore muscle that can withstand her magic feet. SaRee is a practitioner of Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy and the owner of Barefoot Massage of New Tampa, located in the New Tampa Professional Park off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in Pebble Creek, just a mile or so south of the Pasco County line. While holding onto parallel bars above the massage bed upon which a client lies, SaRee uses her feet to literally “walk” on her client’s back, exerting deft, skilled pressure to ease out kinks and stretch tightly coiled tissue. It was on a snowy Minnesota night, when SaRee was 15 years old, that she was in a serious car crash that left her with severe whiplash and chronic pain. She tried everything, from medication and physiotherapy to Reiki — a Japanese healing technique based on the principle that a therapist can activate the natural healing processes of the body through touch — but it wasn’t until her doctor prescribed a massage that she finally got a respite. That massage she got as a teen not only gave her pain relief, it also showed her that healing through massage was her calling. How did she pay it forward? By literally walking all over people. SaRee, 43, was certified in Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy in 2004 and became a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in 2006. “I’m a born caretaker,” she says. “I get to treat all my patients like I’m their mother. I like helping bodies heal naturally without medicine, the way it was intended to be.” She has been practicing Ashiatsu therapy since 2004. “Ashi” means foot and “atsu” means pressure in Japanese, and SaRee began to study it while treat-

SaRee may be soft spoken and petite, but don’t let that fool you: her feet pair the strength of a linebacker with the nuanced finesse of a surgeon. She uses the parallel bars above the massage bed to balance herself as she uses her feet to knead tension and knots caused by long commutes, bad posture in front of computers and the repetitive motions involved in playing a sport or an instrument. She can help relieve the pain caused by many auto accidents, professional sports injuries and work injuries. Her feet don’t feel like feet either; it is as though a broad pair of hands is

clinical massage, meaning she actually fixes or relieves physical problems her clients are having as opposed to simply relaxing people, although the relaxation is, of course, often an inevitable side effect. Her treatment room has the same soothing music, soft lighting, fragrance and other accoutrements regular spagoers expect, but those details belie the serious nature of what she does. Many regular clients are referred to her by physicians, and she has helped everyone from teenage musicians to middle-aged athletes, and from mid-life commuters to octogenarians who are looking for noninvasive relief from chronic pain and conditions from plantar fasciitis to TMJ. SaRee says her youngest client is 16, and her oldest is 81.

Knowledge + Technique = Relief!

“There are so many soft tissue injuries that can be completely healed through massage,” she says. “People often think that a problem in a joint — whether knee, jaw, or vertebral — is local only to the joint, so they don’t realize how massage can help. I want people to know that it is our muscles and tendons that bring our bones and joints together and that by taking the tension out of the muscles, we can relieve the tension being put on our joints.” SaRee explains that most knee prob-

lems, for example, are caused by overly tight adductor, hamstring and quadriceps muscles, and can often be eliminated by working the muscles surrounding the knee until they are pliable and supple. “The same is true of any joint in the body, including the joints in between each vertebrae of the spine,” SaRee says. “If you are suffering from slipped, bulging or herniated discs and you have the associated muscle tissue softened with massage, you will be relieving the pressure on those discs.” At times, she reaches for additional tools, such as hot stones or a bamboo stick, the latter of which she had custom made for her. SaRee uses it to roll out tightness along the side of your neck and shoulder. “It’s like brushing your teeth,” SaRee says. “You get your body worked on and iron it all out.” She adds, “We get our cars serviced and homes cleaned, but we give so little of that TLC to our bodies, even though we’re only given one. We also rarely pay attention to the influence that food and stress play on our bodies.” SaRee realized she enjoyed caring for people while working in a nursing home during high school, and as soon as she turned 18, she says she signed up to learn how to be a masseuse at Sister Rosalind’s Schools & Clinics of Massage in St. Paul, MN. After completing her professional massage certification there in 1997, she worked for a spa and fitness center in

Cottage Grove, MN, and went into private practice at the age of 25. She ran her practice, Just for You Massage, for nearly seven years, both in Minnesota and in Miami, FL, where she moved so her then-husband could attend law school. She eventually relocated to Tampa. Today, she lives in New Tampa, where her children attend Paul R. Wharton High and the Turner/Bartels K-8 school. Until her son became old enough to start school, SaRee says she had been treating patients out of her house, but after the littlest one started school, she felt ready to rent a room and open a formal practice where she could set up her equipment. She has worked out of her current office since November 2015. SaRee also has taught massage at her alma mater and at some of her former employers, including the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, where she trained masseurs and wrote protocols. She also has taught nurses in labor

and delivery wards, and in fact, an aspect of her practice that is very close to her heart is prenatal, postnatal and labor massage. SaRee has trained as a doula, a trained professional who provides women with physical and emotional support and guides them through pregnancy, labor and post partum — and is certified by Chicago-based DONA International. She loves to accompany clients to labor and delivery rooms. “One of the biggest problems women have in the labor room is feeling alone,” she says. “I’m there with them as if it’s my own labor. Our bodies know exactly what to do when fear doesn’t run away with (them).” SaRee does not accept insurance, but offers a 20-percent savings for the first treatment. If You Have Cataracts, See Dr. Wipfli At St. Luke’s In Carrollwood By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN As people age, their vision often becomes clouded by cataracts. In the Tampa Bay area, candidates for cataract surgery can take advantage of the decades of expertise by pioneers in the field at the world-renowned St. Luke’s Cataract & Laser Institute, which has six locations, including Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, Spring Hill, St. Petersburg, The Villages, and its Tampa location in Carrollwood, which is the closest to Neighborhood News readers in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel. At the Carrollwood location, just north of W. Fletcher Ave. on N. Dale Mabry Hwy., patients see Jeffrey Wipfli, MD, a Board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in advanced cataract surgery. Dr. Wipfli has completed more than 35,000 cataract surgeries over the course of his 20-year career. He earned his M.D. degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, and graduated with Honors and Special Distinction. Dr. Wipfli then completed his residency training at the St. Louis University Eye Institute in St. Louis, MO, where he received the Rabani Award for Excellence in Patient Care. He had previously earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he was named Pre-Profes-

Before joining St. Luke’s, Dr. Wipfli spent nine years in private practice in Oklahoma. “There are so many reasons why St. Luke’s is the best place to have cataract surgery,” Dr. Wipfli says. “The moment you walk in the door to St. Luke’s, I think you’ll be impressed with the quality of the people that we have there because they really want to make a difference in people’s lives.” He explains that not everyone is com-

fortable working with people’s eyes, not even all medical personnel. At St. Luke’s, however, there are many staff members who have worked at the facility for more than three decades and are extremely experienced and comfortable working with eyes. “The staff in our operating room is easily the most experienced anywhere in Florida,” Dr. Wipfli says proudly. Florida is something of a mecca for this type of surgery, he says. Because cataracts

tend to affect people as they age, Florida’s has a large number of residents age 60+ who need the surgery. In fact, the National Eye Institute says that more than half of all Americans age 80+ either have cataracts or already have had surgery to remove them. Dr. Wipfli says many of his patients are in their 70s or older, but some people — especially diabetics — experience them much younger, and he helps patients of all ages when their vision becomes cloudy. Dr. Wipfli says no matter the patient’s age, it can make an incredible difference in someone’s life to have cataracts removed. “Performing cataract surgery is extremely gratifying,” he explains. “We get to see the outcomes that people have and how it changes their lives. They can drive. They can read. They can see their family members. They can see a beautiful sunset. Nothing could be more gratifying than that. We are blessed to be able to do what we do.”

Excellence For 50 Years

St. Luke’s was founded in Tarpon Springs by Dr. James Gills in 1968. Gills was committed to perfecting the treatment of cataracts with the highest level of patient safety, comfort and clear vision. He created innovative techniques that have helped reduce the complications associated with cataract surgery and have defined the standard of care across the industry.

Having performed more than 35,000 surgeries in his 20-year career, Dr. Wipfli is an experienced cataract eye surgeon who truly cares for his patients. Dr. Gills also was (and still is) a towering figure in the community. He endowed millions of dollars to colleges, YMCAs and charities around the world, and was the catalyst in the development of what is today known as Trinity, in western Pasco County. Today, Dr. Gills’ son, Dr. Pit Gills, leads the practice, where he also cares for patients as a Board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgery. In addition to cataract surgery, Board-certified doctors in the practice provide a full range of ophthalmic care and surgical procedures, including retinal treatment and surgery, glaucoma treatment and surgery, corneal surgery, refractive/LASIK surgery, eyelid surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology. Dr. Wipfli has been at St. Luke’s for

the past 10 years and his primary focus is cataract surgery. He says that in his 20 years of experience as a surgeon, “the biggest thing that’s changed (about cataract surgery) is that we’ve made it safer.” He explains that the machines used to remove cataracts have become much more efficient over the years, balancing the fluid and suction needed for the procedures. With surgeons as experienced as Dr. Wipfli, cataract removal is even safer today than it has been in the past. Dr. Wipfli also says that it’s not just the expertise available at St. Luke’s that makes it special. He says he and his fellow staff members are committed to “excellence with love,” which is St. Luke’s mission, and they strive to provide that to every patient

who walks through the doors. “A couple of years ago, I went to St. Luke to have my cataracts removed,” writes Jordann Scruggs in a recent Google review. “From the moment I entered the facility, I knew I had made the right choice. Everyone treated me with respect and kindness. Dr. Wipfli fully explained all my options and gave me expert advice. After surgery, my eyes are 20/20 and 20/15 and I have never had any problems. Dr. Wipfli personally called to check on me after surgery. I would highly recommend Dr. Wipfli for anyone considering eye surgery. He is truly a gifted and caring doctor.” When he’s not performing cataract surgery or consulting with patients at St.

Luke’s, Dr. Wipfli can often be found at Tampa Bay Lightning hockey games. He’s been an avid fan since he took his wife and two daughters to a couple of games after moving to Tampa. Back in Oklahoma, he says they didn’t have a local team to cheer for. “There’s something about rooting for your local team,” he says. “It’s a bond with the place you live.” St. Luke’s Cataract & Laser Institute’s Tampa office is located at 13303 N. Hyde Park Renovations Brings Custom Remodels To New Tampa By ANDY WARRENER For more than five years, Hyde Park Renovations has been transforming homes through kitchen, bathroom, outdoor and whole-home remodels across the Tampa Bay area. With an eye on reaching the many communities in New Tampa, Hyde Park Renovations brought on interior decorator Amy Smith in January. Smith’s connection to New Tampa has Hyde Park Renovations poised to expand in an area Smith believes is ripe for renovations. “A lot of homes in the New Tampa area are dated now,” Smith says. “A lot of the reds and golds and jewel tones are going away and creams, whites and more neutral tones are coming back in style. We’ve already done remodels in homes that are just 16 years old. A style that might have been popular at the time is now ready for a face lift. Whether it’s a new kitchen or master bathroom, new decor, furnishings, color selection or a wholehome renovation, we can do all of that.” Smith’s connection to the area isn’t new. She moved to Meadow Pointe 23 years ago, then to Arbor Greene and now in Tampa Palms. “New Tampa is a great place to raise a family,” Smith says. She first started working for Distinction Home Decor in 2003. In 2009, the owners of Distinction Home Decor moved to California, but by then, Smith had built a large enough clientele that she

Interior decorator Amy Smith of Hyde Park Renovations is a Tampa Palms resident who has remodeled a number of homes in New Tampa. She says as the community ages, many homeowners are looking to upgrade their kitchens, bathrooms or their entire homes. (Photo: Andy Warrener) decided to continue on her own. For the next 10 years, Smith continued to design projects in the New Tampa area and beyond. In 2015, she began using Hyde Park Renovations as her general contractor. “They have a great showroom,” Smith says. “You can pretty much just go to the showroom and find everything you need for a kitchen remodel,” Smith says. “I also really like the people there. (Executive Vice President) Kevin Steele is great and we have a wonderful working relationship.” The informal blossomed over four years

before Smith eventually decided to team up with Hyde Park Renovations. “I was talking with them one day about how I was in their showroom all the time and I asked, ‘Why don’t you just bring me on staff?,’” Smith says. The rest, as they say, is history. Smith is now the interior decoration & design consultant for Hyde Park Renovations. She also is their link to the New Tampa area, as she’s designed dozens of projects in the area. Smith’s calling card is her expertise in

the latest trends, as well as her attention to detail and passion for what she does. “In my opinion, her vision and attention to detail are unmatched in interior design in the Tampa area,” says Tampa Palms resident Suzie McRae. “She worked tirelessly with all parties involved to achieve our dreams for the kitchen and patio area. Her work is nothing short of amazing.” Smith has a knack for taking what the client tells her they want and producing what they had envisioned. “One of Amy’s biggest strengths is listening to her clients,” Kerry Jones of Carrollwood says. “She asks lots of questions to find out exactly what you are trying to achieve with your renovation. We loved her design so much that we decided to also renovate our beach condo with her.” Smith doesn’t just “design and dash,” either. She is there through every step of the process, oftentimes working out kinks in the project long after its initial completion. “If there’s a curveball, she always finds a workaround for it,” Jones says. Smith says there are often curveballs when it comes to home renovation, but the good designers find the right solutions. “I always tell clients that a home renovation is a test in patience,” Smith says. “You bring a company into your home, you see us every day, there are going to be bumps along the way, but our ultimate goal is to make sure everyone is happy with their remodel.” She adds, “There is so much satisfaction in turning something that people don’t love

into something they just adore. From the fixtures, to the kitchen table, down the coffee maker, there’s a lot of satisfaction in seeing the final result.” Smith and Hyde Park Renovations are even better as a team. Together, they combine every aspect of the remodeling process. The first step is a call to inside sales & showroom specialist Haley Nash. Nash sorts out some early details, like the scope of the project, the budget for the project, the time frame and such. Next, Hyde Park Renovations will come out to your home and take measurements in order to create a 3D design drawing. The measurements are put into a program called 2020, an application that is considered to be the “industry standard,” with customizable designs. “We already have several cabinet lines uploaded into (the program) and there are multiple options within each cabinet line,” Smith says. “Once the design is done, 2020 renders the kitchen or bathroom into three dimensions, where you can turn it to look at different angles.” Smith says that a kitchen design usually starts with choices for cabinets, or even the range. Once those preliminary choices are made, it’s on to the next design step. After the initial design is approved, it’s into the showroom, which is located next to Anytime Fitness on W. Kennedy Blvd. between Habana and Gomez Aves. in South Tampa.

So Many Choices

Hyde Park Renovations carries four lines of cabinetry, each fitting into differing budget parameters. The Plain & Fancy line of cabinets is one of Smith’s favorites,

Smith can help you transform any room, like the bathroom pictured above. based on the line’s wide array of options. Hyde Park Renovations also carries both Viking and Samsung appliances. It’s likely that all of the design options can be selected right in the South Tampa showroom. There is an entire room with tile and flooring selections, including many hardware options, like pulls and door knobs, as well as several lines of plumbing fixtures, including Danze fixtures. “Some people say you shouldn’t mix metals,” Smith said. “I love to mix metals in a kitchen — vintage gold or bronze pulls with stainless steel appliances.” Then, it’s on to finalizing the selections. Smith says that there are usually some revisions in a design but then, a formal contract is drawn up and once the plumbing and electrical permits are pulled, a customer can expect a kitchen renovation to take 12-16 weeks, while a master bathroom can take 8-12 weeks. “Amy was amazing to work with, I

would have never been able to deal with all of the design decisions on my own,” Kim Brannen of South Tampa says. “We went room-by-room discussing specifics, the communication throughout the project was wonderful.” Hyde Park Renovations also deploys an application called BuilderTrend. The project management application can be downloaded to a computer or smart phone and connects the home owner to Smith, to the project manager and to each step of the remodel. “It (BuilderTrend) allows us to communicate with everyone involved in the project,” Smith says. “It also allows the homeowner to oversee the progress if they don’t live in the home yet or are out of the country. The project manager uploads pictures of the progress daily.” Smith and Hyde Park Renovations stay in contact with the home owner, even after the project is completed. If an appliance isn’t

working just right or if there’s any other issue, Hyde Park Renovations will be there to help provide complete customer satisfaction. It’s no wonder that Smith feels like she’s part of several families. “After my husband passed, I needed a place where I could feel good, a place where I was happy,” Brannen said. “Amy was as much my therapist as she was my designer and she nailed it — she captured exactly what I needed.” For more samples of Smith and Hyde Park Renovations’ projects, visit HydeParkRenovations.com, call the office at (813) 528-3101 or see the ad on pg. 32 of this issue. KAP Medical Group’s Direct Primary Care Approach Is A Hit With Patients bers because of easier access to their doctor and less hassle dealing with insurance companies. “Dealing with insurance is a pain,” she says, “and a lot of administrative cost goes into billing insurance.” To cover the costs, those doctors simply have to see more patients. “As a result,” she explains, “doctors just don’t have time.”

By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN

Karina Azank Parilo, M.D., of KAP Medical Group is proud to be Wesley Chapel’s only Direct Primary Care family physician. After eight years in a local medical group, Dr. Parilo says she was frustrated with the ever-increasing number of patients she was expected to see, which she says was necessary in a medical group setting to cover the overhead costs associated with having to bill insurance companies. Although Dr. Parilo says she already had 2,700 active patients, the group expected her to take on even more new patients. “There were patients I’d had for six years who couldn’t get in to see me and couldn’t do their hospital follow-ups with me,” she says, explaining that her schedule was too full to be able to work them in, “and I was becoming increasingly frustrated.” So, in December of 2017, Dr. Parilo decided to leave the group she had been with and three months later, opened her own practice, using a newer model known as Direct Primary Care. That means her practice — located in the Windfair Professional Park behind the retail plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. that includes Dickey’s BBQ and The Hungry Greek restaurants — doesn’t bill insurance companies. “Instead, there is a membership fee for the practice,” Dr. Parilo explains, “which is generally $50-$60 for an individual, or a family with two kids is $150 per month.” The practice is open to all ages, and the monthly fee covers unlimited office visits and virtual visits via phone or video, in-office tests,

Dr. Parilo is originally from Tampa. She earned her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology from Duke University in Durham, NC, then came home and earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of South Florida in 2005. While she started training in anesthesiology, she changed her focus to primary care because she found she missed building ongoing relationships with her patients. “I like taking care of kids, women, men and the older population,” she says, “so I went into family medicine to be able to take care of everybody.” In 2008, she moved to Massachusetts and completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester in 2010. At the time, she says she was a single mom, so she was excited to be able to bring her daughter back home to the Tampa area. Now, she and her husband, Dane, live in Seven Oaks and have a blended family of three children and three granddaughters. They met through the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Noon in 2012 and both have remained active in the club.

“I enjoy the service aspect of Rotary and enjoy serving the community,” she says. For example, in addition to being involved with the club’s local service projects, both Dr. Parilo and her husband have been part of the Rotary Club’s trips to Honduras to provide clean drinking water and latrines for families and schools in the mountainous and impoverished city of Troyes. With the Direct Primary Care model, Dr. Parilo says the main advantage is the amount of time she can spend with each patient when needed, and that the time she spends with each patient is flexible to meet their needs, as well. “I have time to talk with my patients’ specialists or spend an hour catching up with them if they’ve had a lengthy hospital stay,” she explains. “I can take care of my patients however they need to be taken care of.” While that might be in person, at times, she notes that it also could mean via phone, via video conference or even via text. Dr. Parilo uses an app that maintains patient privacy and connects directly with the patient’s electronic medical record. “Patients love it,” she says, adding that many times, her patients don’t want to leave work to come in for an appointment. “They can just send us a picture and we can respond.” Dr. Parilo has just one person on her staff — Michelle Diaz, her medical assistant and office manager. The two have worked together since 2010.“My old patients have known her and loved her as long as they’ve known me,” Dr. Parilo says.

KAP Medical Group opened. Now, Daelyn’s husband, three children, son-in-law and granddaughter are all patients too. “Dr. Parilo is a good doctor and a great person,” Daelyn says. “It’s almost like a partnership with her. Plus, you walk into the office and they actually know you. That (kind of service) has been lost in recent years.” Daelyn adds that she had been frustrated trying to find the right primary care physician, and that the time she saves with KAP Medical Group is worth every penny. “We run our own business,” Daelyn says, “so our time is actually money, anytime we have to take time away from our business.” Dr. Parilo says that in some cases, Direct Primary Care may save her patients money. “People don’t realize how much they’re spending before they get anything,” she explains. “You pay premiums whether you ever see a doctor or not.” She says most people don’t have an old, traditional insurance plan where they can see any doctor they choose and pay a simple co-pay. New Owners Promise To Continue The Fitting Little Feet Tradition shoes, and helps each kid find the perfect fit. So, when the store became available for purchase, Nicole and Ramon say they jumped at the chance to buy it.

By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN When Ramon Rivera and Nicole Barber bought Little Feet Shoes earlier this year, it represented more than just a new business venture for the couple. They consider it their opportunity to help others the way the store helped them. Located on S.R. 56 in front of Sam’s Club, Little Feet is a shoe store just for children, carrying brand name shoes and more with sizes that fit infants and toddlers up to boys and girls size 6, in regular, wide and extra-wide widths. For Ramon and Nicole, who are married with three children, Little Feet is a place that helped their middle daughter, Sophia, as she learned to deal with a sensory processing disorder. Back in 2012, Nicole says that Sophia never wanted to put her shoes on. Sometimes it took 30 minutes to get them on her feet to get out the door in the morning, sometimes even longer. Ramon and Nicole were tired, stressed and frustrated when Sophia began therapy and they learned that socks and shoes are a common trigger for kids like Sophia. It was a therapist who suggested they take Sophia to Little Feet, which carried sensory-friendly brands, and have a fitting with then-owner Diana

Ciccarelli, who was known to get on the floor with the kids and help them find the perfect shoes, showing patience as they tried on endless pairs, if necessary. It was just what Sophia needed. Diana passed away last year, leaving the future of the store uncertain.

“Our daughter was devastated,” says Nicole. “She was so upset as she asked us, ‘Where am I going to get shoes?’” As an orthopaedic nurse, Nicole also knows how hard it can be for kids with orthotic braces to find shoes that fit over the braces. Little Feet carries those hard-to-find

While Little Feet can be life changing for children with special needs, Ramon and Nicole emphasize that the store carries great shoes for all children. Top-quality brands, specialty shoes and current favorite trends are all available at Little Feet. Some of the store’s most popular brands include Tsukihoshi, Pediped, Stride Rite, Mini Melissa, Livie and Luca, New Balance, Sperry, Saucony, and Plae. “We carry everything from trendy shoes to formal shoes, or something that’s fun for parties, to school shoes in specific colors and specialized shoes for kids who need them,” explains Ramon. Nicole adds that the store sells washable shoes, too, which can be a great benefit for a toddler who is potty training. Little Feet also offers Capezio dance shoes, leotards and tights, and carries socks and bows. Many customers travel long distances to get to the store, which is local to Neighborhood News readers. “We are the only kids’ shoe store in the Tampa Bay area,” explains Ramon. “We

shoes their children needed. “The first time I came in to Little Feet, my kid was in shoes that were two sizes too small,” laughs Nicole. “I had no idea.” Ramon explains that kids can’t often articulate the problem with their shoes. They just take them off. However, he says, it’s really important for a child’s foot development to get them in the right size right away. “Their bones are very soft, so if they’re in the wrong shoe, you can actually have damage,” Ramon explains. “We provide a lot of education,” adds Nicole. Experienced Staff Nicole is the first to admit that she has a lot to learn about running a shoe store. She gives credit to Alexis and Robin (see photo on previous page), employees of the store who have been there for about three years now, for teaching and helping her. “They kept the store going through the transition, before we bought it,” says Nicole. “If it wasn’t for them, Little Feet would have had to close its doors.” In fact, Erin says if she hadn’t heard that the previous owner had passed away, she probably wouldn’t have even known the store had been sold, because she says the transition has been seamless and the customer service has remained consistently excellent. So, Little Feet remains open and ready to be discovered by families who want high-quality, trendy and fun footwear, fit by an expert. “From a business standpoint, we’re hoping this model works,” says Ramon. “Others have given up on it, but we want to bring it back and even expand it. We hope to be able to allow people to purchase online, too, but they can still come in and get fitted for the right size.” Erin says she will continue to take advantage of all that Little Feet has to offer.

“I kind of wish I had found them sooner,” says Erin. “I go in there and there are all these adorable toddler shoes. I’m going to be sad when my kids outgrow them someday.” Sales and promotions are often announced on Facebook and Instagram, along with photos of some of the store’s in-stock shoes. Search “Little Feet Shoes” on either social media platform. Little Feet is located at 27607 S.R. 56 (next to Wolf’s Den, in front of Sam’s Club). The store is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 10 a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. WHARTON TAKES THE BATTLE OF

BBD

Defensive scores by senior linebackers Ed Marcelin and Steven Joseph (pictured left), a rushing touchdown by 6-foot-4, 325-pound lineman OC Davis and a perfect night of kicking by Zach Godbold gave Wharton a 42-7 win — and New Tampa bragging rights — over Freedom in the annual football showdown between our area’s local high school rivals. The Wildcats’ win was the second-most lopsided ever (only the 36-0 win in 2006 was worse) against the Patriots, and Wharton now leads the series 11-6. The Wildcats rushed for 246 yards and four touchdowns, with senior Ben Williams leading the way with 155 of them on 13 carries, two for touchdowns. Davis’ touchdown harkened back to William “The Refrigerator” Perry’s days as a member of the Super Bowl XX-winning Chicago Bears, when the defensive lineman was a short yardage sensation. Davis, by the way, is two inches taller than The Fridge in his prime, but about 30 pounds lighter. Godbold, one of the top junior javelin throwers in the country, also is adept with his right foot. He was 6-for-6 on extra points, and booted three of his seven kickoffs into the end zone. Two others were fielded near the goal line and resulted in Freedom starting drives at their own 11- and 15-yard lines. The Wildcats snapped a two-game losing streak to Freedom, and improved their overall 2019 record to 3-2 as of our press time. The Patriots, who picked up their first win of the season the week before by defeating Spoto 2215, fell to 1-3.

Freedom Girls, Wharton Boys Win Conference Swim Titles!

Freedom swimming coach Joanie Costello doesn’t have the biggest team around, with only 17 swimmers. But, when it comes to Hillsborough County’s Western Conference, she has the best. Despite being disqualified in the first race of the meet on Sept. 27, the Patriots roared back to capture the Conference title with 419.5 points, edging out second-place Strawberry Crest (412) at the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center. The Wharton boys also claimed the conference title, winning with 340 points to outdistance second-place Hillsborough (320). The first two finishers in each race qualified for the county championships, along with those whose times were good enough. Freedom’s 400 freestyle relay team of junior Hannah LaBohn, senior Josie Clark and sophomores Carly Joerin and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier Michelle Morgan clinched the victory in the final race, winning by 16 seconds. “It made me a little nervous after 34

100 Free and swam on the second-place 200 Free Relay team with Shea Noll, Vivian Ernst and Clark. The Wharton boys, 5-0 on the season in dual meets, got county-qualifying performances from senior captain Derek McDonald (first in the 200 IM, second in the 100 Backstroke), junior Igor Fedossov (first in the 50 Free) and freshman Martin Ferrebee (first in the 500 Free). The Wildcats also won the 200 Medley Relay (Ferrebee, junior Adam Bell, McDonald and Fedossov) and took second in the 400 Free Relay (McDonald, Ferrebee, Fedossov, and junior Nathan Argabrite). The Wharton girls finished third with 226 points, with their best finish coming in the 200 Medley Relay as Callie McCool, Alexandra Haasser, Amelia Bitting and Kylene Wright qualified for the county meet with a second-place finish. The Freedom boys were fourth with 256, with Jack Gardner (second in the 50 Free) and Ethan Edagawa (second in the 200 Free) moving on to the county meet. @NTWCNews

OTB Delights Café Now Offering Fresh, Locally Prepared Meals & More By GARY NAGER I have seen the highs and the lows over the last six years with my friend Dirson De Mesquita, the owner of OTB Delights Café, now located in Nye Commons, on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just south of S.R. 54. Dirson had started his successful, healthyeating-oriented restaurant concept in the same plaza as The Hungry Greek and Dickey’s BBQ a little further south on BBD (across from AdventHealth Wesley Chapel) when he decided to find anther location in 2018. What he didn’t know was that he would be closed for several months (basically, from August until December) that year, as he agreed to leave his old space in order for the new tenant — Umu Japanese & Thai — to get started on their build-out while he began building the new OTB. Bottom line? Dirson and his wife Ana weathered the storm of several months with no OTB income and have been thriving in their new location ever since. “Our breakfast

business has definitely picked up since we’ve been here,” Dirson says. “And our lunch crowd has been about the same.” The new location is definitely a nicer layout and even though OTB is the only restaurant in Nye Commons, which doesn’t have a particularly easy entrance to get into either, people have been finding it (it’s located less than four miles north of the Pasco County line) — and loving many of the changes to the menu.

But, What About The Food?

At its old location, when OTB only served healthier turkey bacon for breakfast, I’ll admit I didn’t go out of my way to enjoy my most important meal of the day there. But now, with the new OTB even closer to my office, Dirson has added not only real bacon, but a variety of delicious new breakfast menu items. My favorite is still the “breakfast plate” (right), with your choice of three regular or chocolate chip pancakes, two eggs any style (over easy for me, of course) and three strips of that (extra crispy) bacon — a bargain for only $9.99. And, even though it comes with pancakes, I still add OTB’s tasty marble rye to soak up my egg yolks. Just as delicious, but understandably more expensive ($12.99) is the steak and eggs breakfast, with a nice portion of thinly sliced steak and three eggs your way. Newer breakfast items include “Omelette’ing

hamburger as a “healthy” option, Dirson’s grass-fed artisan burger is seasoned, hand-pattied, grilled to order and delicious. There’s also tasty veggie and turkey burgers. OTB’s lunch selections also feature a variety of salads, including the Asian orange ahi tuna salad, with a generous portion of seared rare tuna, Mandarin oranges, toasted almonds and sprouts; a blackened portabella Caesar as well as a chicken Caesar; a seared steak delight salad and “salmon gone wild” salad. OTB doesn’t have the biggest selection of salad dressings, but all of them are pretty tasty. I especially enjoy the sesame ginger and spicy Santa Fe dressings. Many of the salads also are available as “Rice Rice Baby” bowls. My favorites are the

Shanghai chicken (with jasmine rice, sesame seeds, toasted almonds and the sesame ginger dressing), and the steak delight rice bowl (top right on this page), with black beans, jasmine rice, tomatoes, caramelized onions and blue cheese crumbles, with balsamic.

OTB Has Meal Delivery, Too?

Busy working adults, especially those with younger kids, are turning more and more these days to meal delivery services like Hello Fresh and Blue Apron, but Dirson decided to get into the meal delivery business locally because he can promise the same dependable delivery of fresh meals with advantages over those other services. “We don’t mass produce any-

thing,” Dirson says proudly. Your meals aren’t taken out of a fridge and put into a box, they’re made to your order. You tell us what you want, we make it fresh and deliver it when you want it (guaranteed to arrive between 4 p.m.-9 p.m. on your chosen date to ensure freshness).” The best way to get started is to call (813) 906-2229 or order online at OnlyTheBestDelivery.com. You’ll find a huge selection of options online and even though there are actual menu items, Dirson promises that “everything is customizable. If the menu calls for an item to be served with broccoli, you can substitute asparagus, add sprouts, whatever you want.” And, OTB’s portion-controlled meal

delivery service has complete one-week meal plans, keto meals (like keto pesto parmesan chicken and veggies), plant-based meals (like mushroom taco lettuce wraps), special items for kids (kids’ sliced steak and sweet potato mash), desserts (like vegan, gluten-free cookies) and even raw, cold juices (try the cold press juice sampler, with green, yellow, red and bunny juice) available for delivery. There’s even a full catering menu that is fully customizable to your specifications, for events large or small. Best of all, the food is delicious and guaranteed to arrive fresh, whether you like pulled chicken or ahi tuna with broccoli, quinoa or rice (two left photos on this page) or anything else on OTB’s extensive menu, Dirson’s delivery manager Jen will make sure your order is right — or she’ll make it right. After six years, I’ve come to expect nothing less from Dirson and OTB! OTB Delight Café, located at 4839 BBD Blvd., is open MondaySunday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, call (813) 906-2229 or visit OTBDelightCafe.com.

Nibbles & Business The Latest & Greatest News In Dining, Shopping & Business In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel!

Congrats, Dr. Dave!

Congratulations to well-known local optometrist Dr. David Scamard and his office manager Eileen Popescu of Excellence in Eyecare on their August 14 ribbon cutting hosted by the Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce. You can visit Dr. Dave’s two-year-old independent optometry office inside the Costco on S.R. 56 — even if you’re not a member of the wholesale club — and he provides a full-range of eye care services, including comprehensive exams, visual field analyses, retinal imaging and more, with walk-ins welcome. Dr. Scamard opened his first optometry office in our area more than 17 years ago and I can personally attest to the fact that he’s a great optometrist and a really good guy. If you need more details, or it’s been a while since you had your eyes checked, call (813) 279-7038, visit ExcellenceinEyecare. net or see the ad on pg. 12 of this issue.

Check Out The Sake House!

The Japanese restaurant and sushi bar formerly known as Fong’s Sushi and Sushi Raw, in the Shoppes at Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms (next to Crunch Fitness) is under new ownership and my first visit to the new Sake House will have be going back for seconds. I didn’t get to speak to the new owner but I did enjoy some tasty fried pork shumai dumplings (photo above), a unique chicken fried rice and some super-fresh snapper sashimi. Hopefully, I’ll be telling you more about the Sake House in a future issue. In order to help make that happen, please call or stop in and tell them you heard about the Sake House from Gary at Neighborhood News! The Sake House is located at 15311 Amberly Dr., Tampa. For hours and more information, call (813) 977-3838 or visit SakeHouseAmberly.com.

La Berry Is Now Ice Spice Café!

In our last coupe of issues, we’ve told you about several new Indian restaurants that have or are going to open in New Tampa. Well, add one more to the list, as the former La Berry Frozen Yogurt Café, located in the same Trout Creek Commons plaza as Burger 21 at 20304 Trout Creek Dr., off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., is now the Ice Spice Café. It is still a frozen yogurt shop that also carries Indian ice cream, milk shakes, smoothies, plus wraps, salads and Indian chaat, which is a savory snack I’ve never sampled or even heard of before. What I can say with certainty is that Ice Spice Café has creamy frozen yogurt, with flavors like salted caramel (30 calories per ounce) and white chocolate (34) that are low-fat (1g per ounce), low-carb (5-6g

Coming Soon: Bubba’s 33!

Congrats also go out to Jeff and Crista Dean, the owners of Bubba’s 33, which is now going vertical between Ashley Furniture and Texas Roadhouse on S.R. 56, west of I-75, in Wesley Chapel. This will be the first location in Florida for Texas Roadhouse’s sports bar concept, which held a North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce-hosted groundbreaking (photo above)on Sept. 9. Spotlight On: Seabreeze Soft Spray — Better, Safer Roof Cleaning & More! When I first met Taylor Gardner about 25 years ago, he and my older son Jared were on the same Little League team for the old New Tampa Little League, which was still playing its games at Mort Elementary on E. Bearss Ave. at that time. Today, Taylor (who also did some ad sales for a certain local publication for a while) is a married man with a beautiful wife and baby son, as well as a U.S. Marine sergeant who got out of the service in 2014. He also just happens to own a business that you and most of your neighbors should probably get to know. Taylor owns Seabreeze Soft Spray & Exteriors, which specializes in exterior home cleaning, including roof cleaning, pool enclosure cleaning, pressure washing and paver sealing. And, even though he does offer pressure washing services, Taylor says it’s the soft spray that attracts the most customers. “Pressure washing is a high-pressure (3,000-4,000 pounds per square inch, or psi, of pressure), low-volume way to clean your roof,” he says, “but Soft Spray is a low-pressure (only 125 psi), high-volume system that is better and safer in many ways.” He says that most pressure-washing systems use a 50-50 ratio of water to chlorine, “but Softspray only uses 30-percent chlorine to 70-percent water.”

Neighborhood News

In addition, he says, “When we clean a roof (photos) or the entire exterior of your house, we first wet down your foliage with plain water, then cover everything with tarps while we’re doing the spraying. Then, we take the tarps off and rinse off your foliage with water again.” If you’re living in a development with a homeowners association, (and pretty much all of you are), you know that you have to keep up with keeping the exterior of your home clean, especially the roof, and Seabreeze Soft Spray is not only better, it’s also affordable — and I personally can vouch for the honesty and integrity of this military vet, family man and devout Christian. Taylor also recently took over his father Ed’s long-time business, Gardner Gutters, which specializes in cleaning out your gutters, soffit fascia, windows, screen enclosures and siding, so he can now actually provide virtually anything the exterior of your home needs to look its best. For a free estimate from Seabreeze Soft Spray, call Taylor at (813) 696-9568, search “SBSoftSpray” on Facebook or see the ad on pg. 49. For Gardner Gutters, call (813) 486-1697, visit GardnerGutters. com or see the ad on pg. 48. — GN
