‘Segment A’ Bruce B. Downs Blvd. Widening Getting Started By Sean Bowes Drivers should be even more careful traveling on the portion of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. that extends south from Palm Springs Blvd. in Tampa Palms to E. Bearss Ave., now that some of the preliminary utility lines relocation work of this second segment of BBD to undergo its scheduled widening (from four or six total lanes to eight in each direction) has begun. According to Hillsborough’s Public Works Steve Valdez, however, this portion of BBD, known as Segment A (the portion representing Segments B & C, between Palms Springs Blvd. and Pebble Creek Dr. already has been under construction for more than a year), is not yet beginning its actual construction. He says the road work that residents are currently seeing, mainly between Bearss Ave. and Amberly Dr. is all utility work. “TECO, the Tampa Water Department, Bright House, Veri-

zon…They all need to move their utility lines before the actual widening can begin,” Valdez says. “They are working with the water lines now. Drivers are going to need to be cautious. There will be lane closures, if needed, but only during the night time hours.” Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention while traveling on BBD, especially during the evening, as unexpected temporary lane closures may crop up. The utility work on the median of Segment A will continue until next summer.

Dangerous Intersections

A little further south, the intersection of BBD and E. Fletcher Ave. is regarded as one of the most hazardous in the county. Since last year, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) has cracked down on red-light runners turning onto BBD and those continuing on BBD as they cross over Fletcher Ave., as the intersection is one of only 19 in Hillsborough County that

has red light cameras installed. A red light camera violation is $158. HCSO has even posted videos on its Youtube.com account where viewers can watch trucks and vehicles barreling through red lights on their way into New Tampa. In addition, over the course of the last 90 days, the Tampa Police Department has listed several intersections on BBD as among the most dangerous in our area. In reverse The widening of Bruce B. that has made our country great. We have all heard that leadership starts at the top. The President of the U.S. has an important role in setting a direction for the nation. I believe that our country needs a change of course. For this reason, I have taken an active role in support of Mitt Romney for President. Mitt Romney still believes in the promise of America. As the former Governor of Massachusetts, a traditionally liberal state, he has a proven record of results. In just one term, Gov. Romney turned around a state that was mired in fiscal and economic problems. When he came into office in 2002, Massachusetts was shedding jobs and running a deficit. By the time he left office in 2006, he had balanced the budget, cut taxes 19 times, and generated enough new revenue to create a surplus of $2 billion for a rainy-

America, once widely considered the “shining city on a hill,” is now struggling under the weight of excessive spending, an extended recession and an uncertain future. This has led some to say that America’s best days are behind us: those critics are wrong. The desire for and pursuit of freedom is still alive and well. Support The Fisher House Golf Classic & More Web News Every year for the past several, I have tried to help my dear friend and fellow New Tampa Noon Rotarian Valerie Casey with a special charity golf tournament. Although it was previously known as “Tee It Up For Our Troops,” the tournament has always benefited the Fisher House of Tampa (at the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., just south of E. Fletcher Ave.). But, this year, the tournament has a new name — The Tampa Fisher House Golf Classic — and will again be held at the beautiful Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club, on Friday, November 18. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. that day (playing spots were available at our press time and can be reserved before that day) and there will be a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Although they still can’t control the weather, Val and her always awesome committee will ensure that whether you’re a golfer or not, you will have great food and beverages available, great silent and live auction prizes to bid on and lots of fun supporting a most worthy cause. For those who don’t know it yet, there are Fisher House residences on or near many VA hospitals not only around the country, but around the world. They house the relatives of the brave men and women injured while serving in our armed forces. Val, who is from a military family herself and married to a former U.S. Air Force pilot,

And, thankfully, she isn’t alone. The tournament has raised tens of thousands in years past and Val says the number of players and sponsors already signed up will ensure that she will be able to donate thousands more this year, too. “But, the Tampa Fisher House is such a wonderful place, one that genuinely needs this type of financial assistance,” she says. “So, the more money we raise, the more we’re helping these families while they’re here trying to help their loved ones recover.” The cost to play in the tournament is $125 per golfer, which includes lunch provided by BJ’s Wholesale Club and Romano’s Macaroni Grill, food and beverages on the course provided by Pepin Distributing and an awesome post-tourney awards dinner from Macaroni Grill and the Meat Monkeys competitive BBQ team. City Passes Panhandling Ordinance By Sean Bowes At our press time, there were still a few panhandlers standing near various intersections in New Tampa. Most of them wore reflective vests; some of them held signs and others simply stood in the median waiting for a hand out from travelers. However, by the time this issue of Neighborhood News hits your mailbox, the panhandlers will likely be gone — unless you count Sundays or the ones who sell newspapers. “I know what's coming,” said Rick (who asked his last name not be published), a panhandler who regularly asks for spare change at Amberly Dr. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd., after the City of Tampa passed its first-ever panhandling ban October 6. “I read the papers, but what can I do? I can't get a job in this economy.” The “no panhandling” ordinance went into effect November 1 (after we went to press but before we came out with this issue. It outlaws any panhandling in the city of Tampa, every day except Sunday. The one-day exception allows for charitable collection such as firefighters’ “Fill the Boot” fund-raisers that collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)’s “Jerry's Kids” and also for panhandlers like Rick to ask for handouts. However, newspaper hawkers, who are mostly independent contractors for The Tampa Tribune and the St. Petersburg Times, are still allowed to sell papers to drivers seven days aweek from the side of Tampa’s roadways. Many of the hawkers are poor, and selling the papers is their only source of income. They earn 50 cents for every paper they sell. Sometimes they make as little as $50 for an 11hour shift, says Jeremy Block, a hawker who regularly sells the Times.

6

The City of Tampa’s new panhandling ordinance still allows panhandlers like Rick on city streets one day per week. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has long opposed a partial panhandling ban, favoring a full seven-day ban instead, such as the one that Pinellas County adopted last year and Hillsborough County enacted in March of this year. Tampa’s ordinance is modeled closer to Pasco County’s six-day ban, which was adopted four months ago. However, Buckhorn says that he is happy to see something being done about the issue in the city, too, which many residents have called a “dangerous problem.” “I am pleased the Tampa City Council has come to a consensus and adopted a panhandling ordinance,” Buckhorn said. “I am confident the majority of the Council will ultimately do what is best for our community. I look forward to a day when our medians are panhandler-free (every day).” Until now, the only regulation for panhandlers has been to wear a reflective vest during a pedestrian-to-driver solicitation. Violations for panhandling will be charged as misdemeanors punishable by up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) had planned to use the first week of the ban to educate panhandlers about it and hand out warnings before enforcing the new law. That first week is ending as you receive this issue.

New Tampa Woman Charged With Theft Tampa Police Department (TPD) Community Service Officer Lisa Timmer wants New Tampa residents to keep an eye on their valuables at all times and not to “get lulled into a false sense of security when visiting public libraries and other public places.” On October 18, a woman visiting the New Tampa Regional Library on Cross Creek Blvd. left her backpack unattended while she looked down the aisles of books. Unfortunately, this lapse in judgment led to another woman’s shopping spree. A TPD report says Tahari Brown, a 33-year-old New Tampa woman (who lives less than two-miles from the library), noticed the backpack, lifted a wallet from it and then went into the bathroom, taking out some cash and a credit card before discarding the wallet and leaving the library. Her next stop, police say, was the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., where Brown purchased

a computer and two prepaid Visa cards with the victim’s credit card, totalling $561.86, so Brown faces three separate charges of “frauduTahari lent use of a credit card.” Brown Brown was not apprehended until a week later, when TPD Ofc. Ali Fitzpatrick recognized Brown filling up (at the Shell gas station at Cross Creek Blvd. and Kinnan St.) the same car (from security footage) she used while making the fraudulent purchases at Wal-Mart. After conducting a traffic stop, Ofc. Fitzpatrick and her partner, TPD Ofc. Michael Noyes, recovered $300 of the stolen property and Brown admitted to the crimes after the officers read her her Miranda rights. Brown also has been charged with one count of grand theft. This was the first time she had been arrested in Hillsborough County.— Sean Bowes

Raymond James Financial Expanding Into Wiregrass Ranch At S.R. 56 By Sean Bowes Regardless of how the economy will be doing in other parts of the county in the next few years, there will likely be hundreds of new jobs in Wesley Chapel after 2014. On October 4, the Pasco County Commission approved an incentive package for Raymond James Financial, a well-known investment and financial planning company that will be creating its latest campus in Wiregrass Ranch. The multi-million dollar incentive package will include $10 million from the Pasco County budget as well as an additional $5 million from the state. The money will be used on road improvements such as the completion of Wiregrass Ranch Blvd., an extension of Mansfield Blvd. (where Wiregrass Ranch High is located) and will eventually connect S.R. 54 to S.R. 56. The incentive package also includes tax breaks for Raymond James Financial, which has set a tentative construction date of 2012, with occupancy of the first building expected as early as 2013. Raymond James Public Relations Manager Steve Hollister says that the details about the company's construction plans have not yet been finalized; however, it has been published that the

10

Raymond James campus will be comprised of two 100,000-sq.-ft. buildings. The company has said it plans to bring 750 jobs to the county by 2024, with at least 100 of those jobs beginning in 2014, although employees for Raymond James’ operations department will be hired in as little as two years. “The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) has put money aside each year to be able to attract the ‘big players’ (like Raymond James),” explained District 2 commissioner Pat Mulieri, whose district includes all of Wesley Chapel, including the planned Raymond James campus. “The money is allocated over a number of years. The incentive money also has been set aside to assist present established businesses to grow.” The BCC recently approved the latest budget of $1.1 billion on September 13, and although Mulieri says that for the incentive package for Raymond James Financial will come from the recently passed budget, it will be doled out over the next 10 to 15 years. Also, in order for Raymond James to collect from the package, the company must meet certain agreed-to benchmarks, such as breaking ground in 2012 and beginning to hire employees for the jobs at the campus by 2013. “The BCC has worked the past

mond James is going to bring in a lot of business, and they bought 65-acres, so they have a lot of room to grow. With the support of my family and a great Board of County Commissioners, we are really getting things done.” In spite of tough economic times, the Wesley Chapel area continues to grow from its former rural background into a strong, modern day workhorse for businesses. The Shops of Wiregrass, the quick construction of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (which will be ready for patients less than one year from now), a new Pasco-Hernando Community College campus, along with the many businesses that have sprouted up in the area, make it apparent that Wesley Chapel is no longer just a “bedroom community” for Hillsborough County. And, Porter says there are still thousands of acres in Wiregrass that could potentially be developed for residents and/or businesses. “The Wesley Chapel area has become the economic engine for Pasco County,” Mulieri says, adding that the explosion of major businesses in the region are creating a, “synergy that will help stimulate the economy in Pasco County,” and surrounding areas such as New Tampa. According to Raymond James’ Hollister, the Wiregrass property is a great option for the company’s new campus. He says that the factors that

weighed in favor of Wiregrass Ranch instead of different options in Hillsborough County were its minimized natural disaster risk, access to major roadways, demographics, redundant power and fiber optics infrastructure, as well as the available incentives made possible by the county. “I believe that attracting a renowned company like Raymond James to Pasco will undoubtedly spur others to locate to our developing financial epicenter,” says District 61 State Rep. Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel) whose district includes all of Wesley Chapel. “This is what economic development is all about — this is the beginning of good things to come for Pasco County!” The Wiregrass deal concluded just after the St. Petersburg-based company was required to pay fines and restitution for, allegedly, overcharging some of its customers. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) recently fined Raymond James $425,000 and ordered it to pay $1.69 million in restitution to more than 15,000 customers for charging "unfair and unreasonable" commissions for their services. Brad Bennett, FINRA’s executive vice president, has said that the overcharges happened when the company “failed to adequately monitor its supervisory systems.”

“Romney”

Continued from page 1 environment. He didn’t make excuses; he made a difference. As a presidential candidate, Romney is right on the issues. Social Security is shaping up to be a central issue for voters, especially in Florida where we have the largest population of seniors. Gov. Romney recognizes that Social Security faces a severe financial shortfall, and he has developed well thought-out reforms to fix and strengthen the program so that we can keep our promises to both current seniors and to future generations. It’s a sensible, conservative plan, not a wrecking ball. Romney also has a very detailed program to turn around the economy. It’s probably the most thoughtful and far-reaching proposal ever put forward by a presidential candidate. It’s a 150page plan (along with 59 separate actions) to get the U.S. economy growing again and it includes tax reform, cutting federal spending and reorganizing the federal government. You can read the plan for yourself at MittRomney.com. I have two young daughters, and their future weighs heavily on my wife and me. I am deeply concerned about

the way our leaders in Washington, D.C., continue to push off difficult decisions at the expense of my children and your children. America’s spending cannot be sustained. It is not fair to bill the next generation for the excesses of politicians today. We need someone with the courage and conviction to stop making soft decisions, and instead put America’s needs first. Mitt Romney is that kind of leader. The upcoming election for our next President is a contest of great consequence. We have been given the privilege of making the choice to decide who will lead our nation. For me, that choice is Mitt Romney. I urge all Floridians to step off the sidelines and get involved in this very important election. I urge you to become a part of restoring the promise of America. Note-We invite you to respond to Rep. Weatherford’s endorsement column, whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, Liberal, Conservative, Libertarian or just have a different view on the Republican race. Please try to keep your columns to about the same length as this piece (less than 600 words) You can email them to NTNNedit@yahoo.com or post your responses to our website, NTNeighborhoodNews.com or to our Facebook page. - GN

Florida Executive Realty Hosts Food Drive Dec. 2! In the spirit of the holiday season, Florida Executive Realty (FER), which has been independent and locally owned since 1992, is holding its second annual food drive to benefit families in need. The company’s agents are sending letters to their clients enlisting their help in providing non-perishable food items and toiletries. These donations will be collected at the FER offices until Friday, December 2, when a mountain of goods will again flood the offices. At that time, all donations will be transferred to the Compton Park at Tampa Palms recreation room and FER employees and management will gather there on December 2nd to create individual bags for distribution.

With all hands on deck, the FER staff’s goal is to create enough bags to help 500 families. Each family will be given one bag of food items and one bag of toiletries. Anista New Tampa - An Urgent Care Center With Something Extra By Sean Bowes New Tampa already has numerous urgent care medical centers, but none of them are quite like Anista New Tampa, located in the Highwoods Preserve area (near Muvico). Anista New Tampa’s owner Will Welter says the new center is a “one-stop shop” for non-emergency ailments that also handles cosmetic and medical aesthetic procedures for its customers. Welter opened the area’s newest urgent care center last month.Conveniently located near the intersection of Highwoods Preserve Pkwy. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd., one visit to Anista will likely make you wonder, “Why aren’t all urgent cares like this?” Anista New Tampa features a comfortable atmosphere and compassionate, professional care that is already making it a hit with the center’s patients. While you may be walking into Anista New Tampa with a sore throat or a mild fever - the cozy leather coaches, impressive artwork and HD televisions are soothing enough to make you feel better instantly. But, if they don't do the trick, Anista’s physicians may be

16

able to help. The 2,000-sq.-ft. facility is designed to handle many medical problems than can develop unexpectedly and require immediate attention. The facility is equipped with five exam rooms, a digital X-ray machine and an advanced on-site lab, as well as a fullystaffed office with full-time medical assistants, in addition to a chief medical officer who oversees the operation. “I couldn't believe how fast I was in and out of their office,” says Chris Buonomo, a West Meadows resident. “I had pink eye, no insurance and didn’t have an appointment. When I walked in I was seen immediately, I had my vitals taken and I was diagnosed in less than 20 minutes.” Buonomo’s visit cost him less than $100, which included the consultation, diagnosis and prescription for conjunctivitis medicine. “We aim to provide cost-effective, high-quality health care,” says Dr. Michael O’Neal, Anista New Tampa’s chief medical officer. “We’re not looking to replace anyone's family doctor. In fact, we want to complement patients’ primary physicians. We know that sometimes medical attention does

not necessary warrant a trip to the emergency room and that most doctor’s offices close at 5 p.m. We’re here to you compliment primary physician.” To that end, Anista is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekends.

what will work best for each patient. Anista aims for the procedures to be as customized as possible, and to meet your desires in terms of results — from a subtle look of more energy to dramatic wrinkle elimination — without the need of an invasive operation. Dr. O’Neal has been with with the New Tampa office since its opening, as well as with Anista Westchase, where he oversee both operations. With more than 16 years of practicing medicine, as well as being a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice and a former physician for the Toronto Blue Jays. Dr. O’Neal received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida (USF) and graduated from the medical school at the Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences in Kansas City, MO. His residency training was completed at the USF College of Medicine. Dr. O’Neal says he is

excited to bring his experience to this urgent care center, which fills a much needed void in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area. “We are very pleased to welcome Dr. O’Neal to Anista,” said Welter. “He brings a wealth of medical knowledge and experience and will be instrumental in helping to provide quality health care services to our patients.” Anista truly is a single place where you can find everything you need to look and feel healthy. The new facility is changing residents' perceptions of what it means to be an urgent care. Anista New Tampa is located at 18101 Highwoods Preserve Pkwy Suite 102. The office is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday and Sundays, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Call the office at 972-2900 or visit AnistaNewTampa.com for more information.

Dental Sleep Disorder Treatments & More From Jay Nelson, DMD By Camille Gillies Getting a movie-star smile is as close as your neighborhood dentist’s office. Thanks to the technological advances in modern dentistry, you too can have pearly whites that rival Halle Berry’s or Matt Damon’s. Of course, to achieve tthe same kind of striking results, you need to choose a dentist well-trained in cosmetic dentistry, and that’s a specialty of cosmetic and general dentist Jay Nelson, DMD. Located on Highland Oaks Blvd., just east of Livingston Rd. on S.R. 54 in Lutz (just 10-15 minutes from much of New Tampa), Dr. Nelson has been serving patients in and around Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel since 1987. In addition to general dentistry, Dr. Nelson specializes in all aspects of cosmetic dentistry – from veneers and teeth whitening to Invisalign™ and Six Month Smiles™ orthodontics– as well as in the emerging discipline of dental sleep medicine that addresses snoring and sleep apnea.

Flash That Winning Smile! By now, most people are aware of the term veneers, the thin shells of

18

porcelain that are custom-made to create a sparkling white smile, but you may not be familiar with a new alternative to traditional veneers called DURAthins. DURAthins are wafer-thin veneers that adhere directly to the front of the teeth, which eliminates the need for enamel reduction. Another new alternative – this one for straightening teeth – is a procedure called Six Month Smiles™. It’s a shortterm orthodontic treatment that shifts only the teeth visible when you smile; it does not change your overall bite. These braces close gaps and fix crowded or overlapped teeth, often within six months. Priced lower than traditional braces and barely visible due to the use of clear brackets and tooth-colored wires, they also entail fewer office visits. Six Month Smiles™ is available to most patients older than 18. “This is a procedure for adults,” says Dr. Nelson. “For the younger patients, under 18, I always insist that they have their bite corrected by an orthodontist.” Dr. Nelson also offers Invisalign™ for adult patients who don’t want the inconvenience or embarrassment of metal braces. Using a series of custom, removable plastic shells called aligners,

Invisalign™ moves teeth into their optimal position in one to two years, which Dr. Nelson says is typically faster than traditional braces. If a chipped tooth is making you self-conscious, you may be only an appointment away from boosting your self-esteem. Dr. Nelson will bond the problem tooth to rebuild its shape, and then sculpt and polish the restoration to perfection. He says cosmetic bonding can be a viable, affordable alternative to porcelain veneers, although it is not a permanent fix. With proper care, bonding typically lasts 5-10 years. If your problem involves missing teeth, Dr. Nelson can replace them with permanent dental implants.

Have No Fear If any of these procedures or simply getting a filling sends you into a cold sweat, Dr. Nelson and his warm and friendly staff will assuage your fears with minimal sedation dentistry. Here’s how it works: Before your visit, you take a pill that totally relaxes you but enables you to respond to questions. When you become fully conscious you have little or no memory of the experience. “This type of sedation is also a

great alternative for busy people who want to complete several procedures in one visit,” says Dr. Nelson. With modern-day dentistry, nervous patients may not even need sedation. Many fillings can now be done without shots or drills. Dr. Nelson’s use of technology such as air abrasion (an alternative to traditional drilling, it’s a relatively new decay removal and tooth preparation tool that produces no vibration or heat, so patients require little or no anesthetic) and dental lasers make treatments more comfortable. The procedures are often completed in a single visit. Dr. Nelson says that laser technology is revolutionizing dentistry. Using Laser Periodontal Therapy™, he is able to treat gum disease without scalpels or sutures. Laser treatment can help avoid gum surgery and it speeds healing and recovery time.

Improve Your Sleep Another breakthrough in the field is in the area of sleep medicine. Five years ago, the American Association of Sleep Medicine approved the use of oral appliances for treating sleep apnea, a serious condition in which a person stops breathing while asleep. Dr. Nel-

Nelson works cooperatively with area physicians who specialize in sleep disorders to address individual patient needs. He says many physicians whose patients don’t need or can’t tolerate a CPAP device refer patients to him. Some sleep apnea sufferers find CPAP apparatus cumbersome to wear and especially troublesome to use when traveling.

He says if you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, you may be a candidate for an oral appliance called the SomnoMed™. “I have many patients who refused to wear their CPAPs (Continuous Positive Air Pressure machines) but now wear this appliance successfully,” says

Dr. Nelson, who custom fits the SomnoMed™ for each patient. The acrylic device fits over the upper and lower teeth, similar to an orthodontic retainer or mouth guard, and gently realigns the jaw to open the airway, allowing more air into the lungs while you sleep. “The success rate is excellent and I’ve seen it make an incredible difference in people’s lives,” comments Dr. Nelson. Also a member of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Dentistry and the Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr.

Dr. Nelson earned his bachelor's degree Summa cum Laude from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, and his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics, the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Nelson is able to offer the most recent advances in dentistry due to his commitment to continuing education. He has trained with some of the world’s most prominent cosmetic dentists and has received post-graduate training at such prestigious institutions as the Center for Advanced Dental Studies and the Pankey Institute. He has earned a proficiency certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry and a Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry.

All of that training has resulted in many happy patients. A patient named Erin says, “I have never felt as comfortable about smiling as I do today. The veneers were the best thing I have ever done in my life. I wish I had done it sooner. My self-esteem and confidence have risen to new levels, thanks to Dr. Nelson’s artistic hand.” Another patient named Susan says she is happy that she no longer fears going to the dentist. “For someone who has had dental fears most of her life, I actually look forward to my every-threemonth visits,” Susan says. “I always recommend Dr. Nelson and his team to anyone who asks about a great dentist. It's so worth the drive to be treated with such respect and caring by the entire staff.” Dr. Nelson and his wife, Susan, are longtime residents of Tampa Palms and have two daughters. To request an appointment online, visit DrJayNelson.com. Or, call 949-0424 to schedule a complimentary cosmetic dental evaluation or sleep apnea/snoring consultation. Ask about the complimentary teeth-whitening kit available to new patients. The office address is 1928 Highland Oaks Blvd., off S.R. 54, between Livingston Rd. and I-75.

By Gary Nager It’s amazing how many new businesses keep opening in our area, considering the state of the local and national economies, but as long as there continues to be a Business Beat in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel, we will always want to the primary news medium pumping up the volume on those new and revived businesses in our area.

Affordable Pet Hospital Opens In Cross Creek Center The Cross Creek Center shopping plaza, located at the corner of Cross Creek Blvd. and Kinnan St., had always been home to a veterinarian’s office until that tenant moved further east on Cross Creek Blvd. A few months ago, we started seeing signs for a new affordable pet hospital moving into the same space in the Cross Creek Center. Well, as it turns out, that wasn’t just a description, it was the actual name of the new vet office — Affordable Pet Hospital. And, veterinarian Rajani Vonteru, DVM, promises that her office will live up to that name. “Owning a pet can be so expensive these days,” says Dr. Vonteru. “We want to give our patients the best

The oldest golf course in New Tampa keeps getting newer, as there is plenty of news to report about the Pebble Creek Golf Club (PCGC). Of course, the transformation began when owner Bill Place gave the golf course itself a complete, makeover that was completed in 2008. More recently, the club’s banquet room has not only seen its seating capacity roughly doubled, it also has been completely revamped and upgraded. One person who is really happy about the transformation of the banquet room (which is located adjacent to, but separated from) Mulligan’s Irish Pub inside PCGC is new (see, there’s that word again) sales and catering director Mary Ann Yaney, who raves, “That room is literally selling itself to local brides. It’s a godsend to this club!” Mary Ann, the former president of the old New Tampa Community Council and founding president of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce, actually has been at PCGC for several

months, but she recently got a new boss, as Place (who also recently purchased Crescent Oaks Country Club in Tarpon Springs) hired new general manager Chris Hendrick just a couple of months ago. Hendrick actually isn’t “new” to PCGC either. He was the club’s GM back in 2005, but left to run a club up in Pensacola. He says he’s back to try to breathe even more new life into a New Tampa landmark. “We’ve already changed all of our pricing to play the course to include golf carts with GPS, even in season,” he says. “We’ve also got new member pricing and when you join here, you have reciprocal membership privileges at both Crescent Oaks and Wentworth Golf Club (also in Tarpon). This is just a great place to work.” The Long Island, NY, native has been a Class A PGA pro since 1997. Mark, a long-time car enthusiast, definitely passed on that gene to his son, as Jonny has been ordering and installing custom rims, body kits, sound systems and accessories for local residents — and creating new looks and rebuilding engines for his own cars — since before he graduated from high school four+ years ago. He and Mark started 1320 Engineering at that time in a warehouse located near the Skate Park of Tampa. They also had a retail location for a while in Land O’Lakes, but now, 1320 Engineering has opened even closer to home — in the Shoppes at The Pointe in Tampa Palms plaza anchored by World of Beer and Coffee Beanery and located between Stonewood Grill & Tavern and Olive Garden. Their shop is still being transformed into more of a showroom, although there already are some cool accessories and hot rims on display. If there’s a car enthusiast in your family, or someone who would appreciate being able to totally transform his or her “rig” this holiday season, you should definitely call or stop into 1320 Engineering as soon as possible — and please tell the Pachecos we sent you! 1320 Engineering is located at 17020 Palm Pointe Dr. For more info, call 973-8816 or visit 1320Engineering.net.

Arnold & Parkinson — Cosmetic & Family Dentistry Off S.R. 56! By Camille Gillies “MyFamilySmile.com.” It’s an appropriate website moniker for a dental practice that prides itself on treating patients as if they were family and making sure those in their care leave the dental chair with radiant, healthy smiles. This aptly named site belongs to Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry of Wesley Chapel, and creating a warm, caring environment is among the goals that the two dentists set out to achieve when they started their joint practice five years ago. Dentists Robert Parkinson, DMD, and Scott Arnold, DMD, FAGD, began their partnership in 2006 after being introduced by a fellow dental professional who thought they would make a winning team. The two University of Florida College of Dentistry graduates hit it off, joined forces and opened their first office together in Riverview. Seeing the growth potential in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, they expanded this year with a new office in the Cypress Glen Professional Park on Cypress Ridge Blvd. (off of S.R. 56, less than a mile from I-75). With 30 years of experience between them, both dentists share a

philosophy of providing personalized care, treating one patient at a time. If you’ve ever gone to a dentist and felt like a package lined up on an assembly line, you will surely appreciate the care and service you receive at this new practice. Dr. Parkinson insists that the assembly-line experience is exactly what you won't find at Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry. In fact, appointments are carefully scheduled to ensure individualized attention, and the dentists even give their patients their personal cell phone numbers. “Not only do we provide our patients with our cell numbers,” Dr. Parkinson says, “we also call our patients directly to check to see how they are doing (after a procedure).”

Advanced Training, Education & Technology Among the many general and cosmetic dental procedures performed by Drs. Arnold and Parkinson are everything from routine exams, cleanings and fillings to advanced cosmetic dentistry, root canal therapy and even dental implants. Both dentists are proud to have received advanced training from the prestigious Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies and they both focus on staying abreast of new

The updated technology and equipment are expensive, but Dr. Parkinson says he and Dr. Arnold feel the investment is well worth it. “We believe in getting the best of the best,” he says. “We put our money into the best drills and equipment - things that will directly benefit our patients.” Both dentists also are certified in Invisalign orthodontic treatments, the innovative technology that straightens teeth without the bands, brackets or wires of traditional braces. Dr. Parkinson says, “If patients comply with the treatment, Invisalign technology can significantly reduce the time it takes to straighten the teeth and it's much less painful than braces.” He adds that part of the reason he and Dr. Arnold enjoy being dentists is the gratification they receive from relieving their patients’ pain. He says the whole team at Arnold & Parkinson strives to keep all procedures as painless as possible, from treating periodontal disease to restorations. Sami, a patient at the Wesley Chapel office, agrees: “I have always been terrified of going to the dentist, but Dr. Parkinson is extremely kind and thorough and made sure that I was comfortable throughout my treatment,” she says. “His staff always goes the extra mile to keep me calm and relaxed. They

always explain everything that they are doing and are extremely gentle. I have a lot of work to get done and I am so glad that I found Dr. Parkinson to complete it. I just completed my Invisalign treatment and I love my straightened smile. I've recommended him to several coworkers who have been pleased with his office as well.” Comments like those are not surprising to Dr. Parkinson. “People rave about the staff at both of our offices,” he says. “I’ll ask patients how they heard about us and they’ll say, ‘I read your reviews on Yahoo,’ or that they called five different dentists and the person they spoke to here was the nicest.” You can even make an appointment at Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry online, as well as download new patient forms to complete in the comfort of your home. It’s also easy to determine your insurance eligibility, as the numerous insurance carriers in the practice’s network are listed on the Arnold & Parkinson website. Visit MyFamilySmile.com or call 907-2228 to request an appointment or learn more about Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry. The practice’s Wesley Chapel office is located at 26851 Tanic Dr., Suite 101, less than a half-mile north of S.R. 56.

Wharton Football Still In Playoff Hunt Since Beating Freedom By Sean Bowes It may no longer be true as this issue reaches you, but at our press time, anyway, the Wildcats of Paul R. Whar-

ton High were one win away from a playoff berth. Wharton coach David Mitchell’s team (4-4, 1-1 in District 8A-6) had a chance to clinch that playoff slot with a win over Alonso (also 11 in the District) on Nov. 4. After a slow start, the ‘Cats have won their last three in a row, bouncing back from a 37-19 respectable showing against District-leading Plant High with wins over New Tampa rival Freedom High (28-7), Bloomingdale (49-24) and Blake (18-6). Although the streak started with a win over Freedom, Mitchell will be the first person to tell you that he doesn’t care one bit about rivalries. “If we spent all year worrying about one game, we would have nothing to look forward to after it was played,” Mitchell says. “I told my team not to worry about any kind of rivalry.”

A Slow Start The Wildcats didn’t look too worried when they stepped onto the field to play the Patriots (1-8, 1-3 in District 7A-7) in what is traditionally the biggest high school football game in New Tampa every year. Locals call it Wharton’s Darius Page rushed for 168 yds. the “Battle of Bruce B. Downs,” but during the 2011 ‘Battle of Bruce B. Downs.’ Mitchell insists that it is always just Photo by Glenn G. Things looked good for coach Tchecoy Blount and the Freedom High Patriots through most of the first half of a 28-7 loss to Wharton. Photo by Glenn G. Gefers of PhotosBy3G.com. The Patriots had high hopes of avenging last year’s loss to Wharton going into this year’s “Battle” (on Oct. 14), as Freedom had just come off its only win of the 2011 season, 14-7 over Chamberlain. The game started off slow, as neither team had managed to get on the scoreboard with a minute to go in the half . That’s when Wharton sophomore quarterback Chase Litton shuttled Vernon Hargreaves, Jr., the ball on a 50yd. go route to the 1-yd. line. After a penalty for holding, Litton

scored from 10-yards out, giving the Wildcats a strong lead. In the third quarter, Wharton senior running back Darius Page turned up the juice. “He can shut them down,” said Mitchell about Page. Even before the start of the fourth quarter, things were starting to look bleak for the Patriots, who only managed to put 7 points on the board with a touchdown run from Tyrel Nunn. Hargreaves, who also plays cornerback for Wharton and had a sack and an

interception, put the game out of reach by catching a touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. Hargreaves has been named one of the top 40 players in Hillsborough County by BigCountyPrep.com. “We’re slowly getting better. Says Mitchell. “We’ve just got to keep making plays and playing hard.” If the Wildcats did beat Alonso on Nov. 4, the ‘Cats would grab the District’s #2 seed (behind Plant, which had a 7-1, 2-0 record at our press time) and would travel to Orlando to play the District 8A-5 winner, Dr. Phillips High (8-1, 2-0) on November 18. Meanwhile, Freedom’s season

ended (hopefully, with a win) on Nov. 4, against Wiregrass Ranch High (0-4, 0-8). After losing to Wharton, coach Tchecoy Blount’s Pats were shut out by large margins by both Gaither and Tampa Bay Tech.

Finally! A Visit To The Wolf’s Den—Wesley Chapel’s Neighborhood Diner! By Gary Nager When the Wolf’s Den Restaurant first opened on S.R. 56 back in 2008, I sat down with owner and Wesley Chapel resident Roger Wolf to discuss what his plans for the place were and whether or not we could help him with a story and some advertising. Roger wasn’t the first restaurant owner to turn me down, nor was he the first to promise he would do something “in the future” if he ever increased his marketing budget from its current (at that time) $0. “But, don’t take it personally, Gary,” he said. “I love the Neighborhood News. But, I’ve been in the restaurant business for 50 years, more than 30 years as a successful restaurant owner, and I’ve never done any real advertising of any of my previous restaurants. “Wolf’s Den” Continued from page 33 November 1, will include a lot of new sandwiches, including items like the savory New York-style Reuben sandwich, complete with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing (photo top right in the Magazine header on the previous page), that seniornews writer Sean Bowes raved about, an authenticstyle pressed Cuban and many more. Advertising customer service manager Nikki Bennett says that her patty melt was one of the best she’s ever had and I always loved Roger’s homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and fresh green beans and his homemade chili rocks, too. At that time, the restaurant will expand its open hours to Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Roger says if the dinner hours are successful, he plans to add beer and wine and expand the menu even further. “And, when that Florida Hospital opens next year, we will likely stay open 24/7.”

A Little Background Music... Roger says he worked more than full-time hours for his family’s more upscale restaurants as a 13-year-old boy, “before there were laws about such things,” and first owned his own place in 1980, a year after the Playboy Club

in Lake Geneva, WI, closed and Roger hired all of the former Bunnies to wait tables, including an 18-year-old Bunny named Patty. “I was quite a bit older than her,” Roger recalls fondly. “But I knew I couldn’t let her get away.” The two have been married 32 years, although Roger will almost-matter-of-factly tell you that Patty will likely lose her long battle with cancer within a year. “I’m grateful that I’ve already had more time with her than I thought possible,” he says. I have heard many stories the past few years about Roger’s soft heart and unflinching commitment to help this community. He has donated to so many local schools, churches and causes and is truly the type to never want any credit for his efforts. “All of the schools and organizations tell me, ‘We’ll name you as corporate partner of the year’ or ‘ we’ll get you come free publicity in the local media,’ but I do what I do because it’s the right thing to do.” For example, he recently donated food for 600 people for the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (see page 1) and dinner for all of the Wiregrass Ranch High players and coaches before their games on Friday nights.

Neighborhood Nibbles - Divas At Back 9 Café, Liang’s & Frogury! By Gary Nager We always try to keep you updated about new restaurants, events and dining news in this space and this issue is no exception.

Funny Divas At Back 9 Café

If you want to try a fun new sports bar in our area and laugh your butt off, I hope you’ll visit the Back 9 Café at the Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club (located just off Cross Creek Blvd.) on Saturday, November 19, 9 p.m. That’s when my dear friend Susan Saiger and her friends Long Island Mary, Robin Savage and Aniria Wilson will be appearing together again as “The Funny Divas.” The Divas are all hysterical and provide a great evening of entertainment for men and women alike (no, their comedy is NOT appropriate for children). And, although there have been other restaurants inside the Heritage Isles clubhouse, I think the newest incarnation might just finally be the right type of food at the right price. The new owners, Mark and Dennis, serve what I call sports bar fare and they’ve even opened a covered outdoor tiki bar area that is perfect for enjoying some great wings, burgers, sandwiches, pastas & more. I’ve only eaten there

once so far (good burgers), but will definitely provide a full update on the menu in a future issue. The Back 9 Café is open every day for breakfast, lunch and right now and Dennis and Mark are rolling out a new dinner menu, with steaks, more pastas and other entrées.The Café features a full-liquor bar and is currently offering 20-percent-off your total food bill (beverages and gratuities not included) if you mention or bring in the ad on page 35 of this issue. The cost per person for the Funny Divas’ appearance at the Back 9 Café (10630 Plantation Bay Dr., just inside the easternmost entrance to Heritage Isles of f Cross Creek Blvd.) is only $10. For tickets, or for more information about the Back 9 Café, call 907-0726.

Liang’s Adds Menu Items

This issue is the last one where you can cast ballots (see the “Dining Survey & Contest” on page 35) for your favorite restaurants in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel and one local eatery that is certain to be on your list of favorites again is Liang’s Bistro on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., next to Chick-fil-A. Liang’s has been our readers’ favorite Asian restaurant every year it’s been open and has always been among our top ten for your favorite restaurant of any kind in New Tampa. And now, with the addition of some delicious new menu items, Liang’s is certain to be adding to its popularity. Two new appetizers are among the four new items. The first is “Kung Fu Shrimp,” which I wasn’t able to sample because of my shellfish allergy, but it’s a spicy, The Funny Divas (l. to r., Long Island Mary, Robin Sav- fried shrimp appetizer for age, New Tampa’s own Susan Saiger & Aniria Wilson two which is Liang;’s are at the Back 9 Café at Heritage Isles G&CC Nov. 19. unique take on another

restaurant’s “Bang Bang Shrimp.” I did enjoy the savory and spicy new mushroom lettuce wraps, which are chopped portobello mushrooms in another “secret” sauce. My favorite new item is the awesome new fish filet with portobello mushrooms, snow pea pods, carrots and fresh ginger (above) in a zesty ginger-based sauce that clings perfectly to the fish. I also loved the new banana cheesecake roll, which is a fried “egg roll” stuffed with banana cheesecake and served with delicious vanilla ice cream. It’s a killer for my diet (I only ate one bite of it), but well worth the fat and calories. For more info, including how you can get either of the appetizers or the new dessert free with your dine-in (only) order, see the ad on page 37 (there are two other great

If you love frozen yogurt, there’s a new shoppe that has opened in the same plaza as Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Pita Republic, at the corner of BBD and County Line Rd. (in the separate building from Sweetbay and LA Fitness). It’s called Frogury Frozen Yogurt Factory and it features several different flavors of nonfat, low-calorie and even low-sugar yogurt that made me think of the episode of “Seinfeld” where Jerry and then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani both gained a bunch of weight after eating supposedly nonfat frozen yogurt. I already love Frogury’s classic chocolate, Tahitian vanilla, cake batter and cappuccino flavors, the fact you fill your bowl yourself with as much or as little of the creamy yogurt (and amazing fresh fruit, candy, chocolate and other toppings) as you like and I even enjoy the rich Lavazza (imported from Italy) coffee drinks. Apirations Winery Offers Tastings, Classes, Custom Labels & More! By Gary Nager The Aspirations Winery, located on E. Fowler Ave. in Temple Terrace (in the same plaza as CDB’s Pizza, just minutes from most of New Tampa), is definitely a unique place that is well worth visiting. Owner Bill Linville is always happy to give you a quick tour of his working winery, where he makes a nice variety of red, white and fruitinfused wines. Aspirations, which originally was better known as “Wine Not?” when New Tampa resident Bob French originally opened it in the same location back in 2003, is an elegant-looking locale for sampling some tasty (seriously) wines and to purchase great gifts for virtually any occasion, from a unique birthday present to wedding favors for 200 or more people. And, Linville has added some other unique features, including a “Monet & Merlot” painting class (more on this below). Linville, who lives in Pinellas County with his wife Robin, actually found a listing for Aspirations on Craig’sList.com when he was looking for a new business a little more than a year ago. The former banker, who was most recently with 5/3 Bank for seven years, says he “definitely wasn’t looking

for a winery, but I really thought this seemed like a fun, interesting business.” The first question many people ask is where Linville gets the grapes for his wines, since there obviously are no vineyards located behind the shopping center. “All of the wines we sell and serve are made hright ere,” he says. “We can order the ‘must’ (the juice of the grapes) of more than 125 grape varieties from just about anyplace around the world and make any type of wine in the three large tanks inside the winery,” he says. “And, all of our wines are low-sulfite (a common wine preservative) wines, which means that their shelf life is only about two or a maximum of about two-and-a-half years.” Of the wines regularly made and kept on-hand at Aspirations are a nice cabernet sauvignon-shiraz blend called Swamp Juice, cab, merlot, raspberry merlot, Chilean carmenere and my favorite (of course), a very smooth, drinkable malbec. I’m not quite as into white wine, but I have to admit that I enjoyed the peach-infused chardonnay. It tastes like a champagne Bellini cocktail, without the bubbles. I was impressed to also find opportunities to order some of my other favorite grape varieties, including sangiovese, temparanillo, grenache, Super

Tuscan and even an authentic Italian amarone. Varietals that interest many people include a Washington state merlot, Australian cab and pinot grigio. “The ‘must’ that we receive is a blend of available grapes from a variety of wineries,” Linville says. “We therefore can’t get the same grapes used in a particular wine or guarantee a region where the grapes come from, but these are all quality grapes.”

Great Tasting Events

J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets Fans Invade Peabody’s Every Week! Considering that my office has been located next to Peabody’s Grill & Bar in the Shoppes of Amberly plaza in Tampa Palms for about ten years now — and because of the wonderful business relationship the New Tampa Neighborhood News always has had with Peabody’s ownership and management — I've seen a LOT of events at my favorite local sports bar. In fact, I’ve probably seen the dozens of emerald-green-clad New York Jets fans assembled in and outside of The Palms Lounge at Peabody's more than a dozen times...maybe a couple of dozen. I just somehow never asked or realized they were all part of an actual club or organization until a couple of weeks ago. (I know, I’m obviously not as bright and quick-witted as I think I am.) I was interested in doing a story about the group in the Neighborhood News even without having that tidbit of information, but, when a local resident (and Peabody’s frequenter at other times, too) named Brian told me about the New York Jets Fan Club of Tampa Bay, I knew I wanted to help promote what former New Tampa resident (he now lives in nearby Land O’Lakes) Steve “Festa” Scott founded way back in 2004, when it met at Lee Roy Sel-

mon’s on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. Seven years later, the Club has a total of nearly 600 members from all over the world (I have heard emeraldgarbed visitors from Denmark and, I think, California introduced the last two times I’ve hung out with the Club) and four sister chapters in Florida. Festa moved the group-game-watching to Peabody’s in 2005 and his crew has gathered in the separate Palms Lounge for every Jets game (except during the club’s annual road trip to watch the Jets visit Miami) the last three+ seasons. And, with the J-E-T-S getting to the AFC Championship game both seasons, the Club grew to average close to 200 Jets fans (who fit snugly into The Palms at that size crowd) even in the few games before the NFL Playoffs. As a native New Yawka who was never a NY Jets nor a NY Giants fan (at least not for very long) while growing up in Lawn Guyland (less than a half hour from the old Shea Stadium, where the Jets used to play), hanging out with this huge fan club (one of the largest in the U.S.) of Big Apple transplants feels like “old home week” to me. In addition to great prizes that are raffled off to benefit the Club and its road trip to Miami, the Club members also get to order off their own

Peabody’s menu with great food and drink specials — and keep The Palms as a non-smoking venue while they’re there. But, the biggest benefit may be that these sometime-very-loud fans get to chant “J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!” as often as they like, without any concerns about...well, retribution. “I’m glad they stay over there,” said one fan of the now The motto of the NY Jets Fan Club of Tampa Bay, playoff-bound Detroit Lions, which takes over The Palms Lounge at Peabody’s every who was watching his team at Jets game, is “If you’re a Jets fan, you’re family.” the bar in the side of Peabody’s and even “national” teams like the where the pool tables, dart boards and Cowboys also have fan clubs in the other games are kept. “It’s good for Tampa Bay area. Arts & Crafts Under The Palms Makes A Splash At BJ’s! After more than 20 years at another location in Tampa Palms (the Publixanchored City Plaza shopping center), the annual Arts & Crafts Under the Palms Show & Sale, the largest fund raiser each year for the Tampa Palms Womens Club (TPWC), just may have found a new “permanent” home — in the parking lot in front of BJ’s Wholesale Club in the Market Square plaza. Co-chairs Stella Hardman and Judy Alkow say the Club was thrilled with the weather (the event was held Oct. 15-16, the same weekend as the Wesley Chapel Fall Festival; see next page), the crafters, the layout, the turnout, the amount of money raised and, especially, the treatment the Club received from BJ’s. “None of the (TPWC) cmembers can remember us EVER being treated so royally,” Hardman said as the event was winding down that warm, sunny Sunday afternoon. “BJ’s did EVERYTHING for us, They all seemed to be genuinely happy to have had us there.” Laura Ferrario, the customer relations liaison for the Tampa Palms BJ’s, said the feelings were mutual. “They’re a wonderful group of ladies and this is such a nice event,” Ferrario said. “And, BJ’s, as a company, takes a lot of pride in doing things to help out in every

community where we have a store.” At our press time, a couple of weeks after the crafts show, which also featured some outstanding food (a real New York hot dog van, instead of a cart, great Jamaican jerk BBQ, fresh kettle corn and more), the TPWC didn’t have an exact total of how much was raised, but Hardman says, “We definitely beat last year. We’re very much looking forward to next year’s show!” The TPWC donates the proceeds of its many fund raisers to local nonprofit organizations twice a year. They will announce the recipients of this year’s most recent funds raised in December. — GN

The TPWC ladies had plenty to smile about. From sports art to delicious jam and even face painting, you could find almost anything at this year’s Arts & Crafts Under the Palms.

Near-Perfect Weather At Wesley Chapel Chamber’s Fall Festival! The weekend of October 15-16 was a tough one for me. Not only was I on deadline with our most recent Wesley Chapel issue, I also had to try to attend and take pictures at two all-weekend events — the Arts & Crafts Under The Palms show and sale (see page 41) and the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC)’s Fall Festival, held at The Grove shopping center. Worst of all, you really couldn’t have picked a better weekend weather-wise, which made leaving those events to finish that issue even tougher. The WCCC’s Fall Festival was bigger, better and betterattended this year than ever before! Saturday’s festivities again featured Wesley Chapel’s annual “Battle of the Wings,” where both of last year’s winners — The Oaks Restaurant

at Lexington Oaks Golf Club and Santo’s Italian Grill — both retained their titles from last year. The Oaks again was this year’s favorite among a panel of nine judges (which included Pasco County commissioner Jack Mariano) and Santo’s again won “The People’s Choice” award. Unfortunately, I had to leave the event early to go to press, and all of the results of the other contests — the Ronnie Setser’s Custom Car Show and Sunday’s “Pumpkin Patch Pageant” sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel — have not yet been posted on the web. We will provide those updates and maybe more pics in our Nov. 19 Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News & on our website! — GN

High Revs & Good Times At Ciccio’s Lodge’s Exotic Car Show By Sean Bowes By now, the Rosse Corsa red Ferraris have been tucked safely back into their garages, as have the Lamborghinis, Jaguars and Porsches; however the “Show of Speed,” the first exotic car show ever held at Ciccio’s Lodge in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms Shopping Center, was such a success that it looks like it these cars, along with some other exotics, may have the chance to be shown as often as every month. In fact, Ciccio’s Lodge will host its second exotic car show on Saturday, November 19, 5 p.m.-9 p.m. On October 22, an estimated 400

or more people came out to the Publixanchored shopping plaza to check out some of the jaw-dropping rides, which included not only “common” supercars like a handful of Dodge Vipers, but rare exotics like a supercharged Lotus and a Ford GT40 supercar (winner of the show’s People's Choice award) which boasts more than 550 horsepower to the rear wheels. Car enthusiasts of all ages enjoyed the four-hour show at Ciccio’s Lodge while local guitarist and photographer Bob Thompson played outside on the patio. Discover The Dances Of India & More At Srishti Dance Academy By Sheryl Young “Bollywood” style dancing has exploded into one of the most popular types of dance in America today. Featured in recent movies like “Slumdog Millionaire” and on television shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” Bollywood is a vibrant, energetic dance form. It mixes Indian, modern, jazz, hip hop and other styles. But, the Indian art forms of dance don’t stop there. The Srishti Dance Academy, in the Cory Lake Isles Professional Center on Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa, is quickly helping to make not only Bollywood, but also Indian Classical, Folk and Fusion dancing a standard to be recognized and enjoyed by both children and adults. The founder and director of the Srishti Dance Academy is Swapna Komarraju, who was born and raised in Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh province in South India. She’s been dancing since age three, and now loves teaching. “I was always passionate about Indian dance forms, as my mom inspired me to get into learning dance,” says Swapna. “When I moved to the U.S., I wanted to continue my involve-

48

ment. I started small by teaching kids in our community and then moved on to start the Academy, which offers training in various Indian dance forms.” Swapna started the Srishti Academy four years ago and it’s been at its current location for the past two, introducing various Indian dances and movement to more people beyond the Indian community. “Since Bollywood became so popular, I’m seeing a large influx of Americans in my Sunday adult classes,” Swapna says. Swapna was professionally trained in the classical dance forms of Kuchipudi and Andhra Natyam, by respected dance gurus in India (she credits Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna, Dr. Shoba Naidu, Sri. Sudhakar and Smt. Ratna Sri). Both easily recognizable by audiences everywhere for their colorful costumes and expressive movements, Kuchipudi is primarily focused on grace and expression whereas Andhra Natyam is more rigorous.e Today, she teaches Tiny Tots through Adults at the Srishti Dance Academy, beginning with Fundamentals of Dance through Intermediate and Advanced classes in the various dances. There’s even a “Dance as Workout”

“The India Festival is a yearly event organized by Gujarati Samaj of Tampa Bay,” Swapna explains. Gujarati Samaj is a non-profit organization for educational and cultural activities to promote the Indian heritage. The 2010 Festival took place at the USF Sun Dome. This year, the event is scheduled for Friday, November 11, at the Florida State Fair Grounds. “Dances are the highlight,” Swapna says of the event. “But the variety of food, cultural items, as well as wide array of fashion clothing and jewelry displayed by vendors, attracts a wide cross section of the population from in and around Tampa. Around 10,000 people attend the event every year.” Swapna and some of her students

were numbered among 2,800 Kuchipudi dancers in creating a Guinness World Record for performing big group dance choreography at the Second International Kuchipudi Convention in Swapna’s home town of Hyderabad. A look at the Srishti website shows a long list of performances by members of Srishti Academy in the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas. The most recent on the list was at Saint Leo University near Dade City, the state’s oldest Catholic college.

More Than Just Dance at Srishti Academy

In addition to the dance classes, the Academy now offers instruction in Indian Art as well as Yoga. Swapna proudly talks about her Art and Yoga instructors. “Shyama Rangwala is our very talented art teacher, who offers training in traditional Indian art, drawing, coloring, charcoal art, and acrylic painting. She has Owner Swapna Komarraju (in pink) teaches boys and girls won several awards and hosted many different traditional dance disciplines of India at shows. Supriya Srishti Dance Academy.

Bellur is our professionally trained Yoga teacher. Her classes have been an instant hit with our adult students.” But that’s not all! Just in recent months, Shyama has also started teaching two Indian languages at Srishti: Hindi and Guyarati. Instruction levels vary depending upon age and expertise. Dance and Art students can start as young as four years old. This training provides an added perk for young students: Learning discipline and good manners. Swapna also strives to teach her young pupils good values through the medium of dance. Ritu Mitra is the proud mother of two Srishti Academy dance students, and says they are wonderful examples of this training. “My daughter Neha started here in April,” Ritu says. “I am amazed to see the progress she’s made in the classical dance. Although she already knew Bollywood, doing the classical style has given her stamina, grace and elegance, and she’s improved in her ability.” And, Ritu says there are other benefits of the training. “My son, Ankush, has lost stiffness and become more flexible. For both of my children, I am pleased that it’s also helped with respect for elders, discipline, manners, obedience and developing their personalities. Swapna can be strict, but she is very

good with the children.” Not wanting to take all the credit for the success of the studio, Swapna is grateful to her husband, with whom she moved to Tampa six years ago. “My husband, Deepak Chinthamalla, is my backbone,” she says. “He helps me greatly with the studio set-up and upgrades, website and promotion of our Academy. His support is invaluable. It helps me focus on my dance classes completely. His contribution is huge when we have shows or events.” The couple has a two and a half year old son, Ayush, and Swapna also thanks her husband for staying home with him while she is at the studio. Monthly fees for Adult Dance are $50; Kids Dance - $65. Art and Language classes are ($60) and Yoga is $65. There are discounts available for multiple classes. In each discipline, there are four classes per month, and each class is one-hour long. The Srishti Dance Academy is located at 10329 Cross Creek Blvd, Suite L. For more information about class schedules or to view photos of some truly stunning performances, visit SrishtiAcademy.com. The phone numbers are 4041862 for Dance, 843-6784 for Art and 600-7561 for Yoga classes.

Jump-In Will Make Your Kids Feel Like Bouncing Again! If your kids have been longing for a fun inflatable play center since a certain facility on S.R. 54 at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. closed a couple of months ago, there’s a great place conveniently located on S.R. 54 just a few miles to the east (and just east of Morris Bridge Rd.) that you should visit. It’s called Jump-In Inflatable Party Center and, while the 4,500-sq.-ft. place isn’t fancy, it is immaculately clean, the kids who visit seem to have a blast and the folks who own and operate it understand that in today’s economy, parents need to find fun places where they can entertain their kids without breaking the bank. Jump-In owner Jason Ladd and his wife (and charter school teacher) Kim and their three kids live in Dade City and Jason has been in the inflatablesfor-hire business for eight years, although this indoor facility, his first, has only been open about two months as you’re reading this article. He still has a roster of 65 outdoor inflatables for rent, access to many more and he keeps five different play areas available at Jump-In for kids ages 3 to around 10, although he says that some middle school-aged kids (mainly ages 11-12) still really enjoy the inflatables, too. Jason accommodates the older kids separately from the “young’ns,” with Middle School Nights every Friday (7 p.m.-10 p.m.) and some elementary school-only events, such as as the upcoming “Halloween Night” on Saturday, October 29, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., when kids up to age ten are invited to wear their costumes. “Middle school kids don’t want to have to share the space with 3rd graders,” Jason says. “We keep both groups happy

and the parents, too,” with video games, great audio, Wi-Fi and TVs “so dad can watch the games.” Birthday and other private parties are given special treatment at Jump-In. There are two party rooms which can handle up to 40 kids each and not only do you get to keep your things in the party room for the full two hours of your event, Jason says you can do a party for ten kids (which start at $149), bring your own sandwiches, pizzas, cake and other foods (although Jump-In can provide those, too, and also has a concession area). Tampa’s Spirits Fly High At Red Bull’s ‘Flugtag’ Event! By Sean Bowes Imagine a crowd of 125,000 people packed onto the waterfront patio outside of the downtown Tampa Convention Center. Now, imagine that same enormous group of spectators, many of whom had been drinking energy in a can, Red Bull, throughout the afternoon, all with the same question in mind, “Will they fly?” The event was the Red Bull Flugtag, and by now you may have heard that on October 8, teams from around the Tampa Bay area, and some from as far away as the United Kingdom (with a Harry Potter themed aircraft), came together to jump off a 30-ft.-tall scaffold, which was placed on top of two barges, with the hopes of taking flight with their creative aviation-creations, some of which had designs so outrageous it would make the Wright brothers giggle like mad men. At the event, 38 teams came together to see who could fly, or in most cases, fall the furthest before taking a crash landing into a section of the Hillsborough River not far from the Tampa Bay inlet known as the Seddon Channel . The celebrity Flugtag judges included: Evan Longoria (Tampa Bay

Rays), Lexi Thompson (youngest LPGA winner), Ryan Nece (former Tampa Bay Bucs player and current broadcaster player), Jaime Edmonson (Playboy Playmate), MJ (93.3 Morning Show host) and Tarah Gieger (female motocross rider), who judged each team on creativity, showmanship and most importantly, distance. Some people may have heard the word “flugtag” before, which actually means “day of flying” in German. The first Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992. Since then, more than 35 Flugtags have been held around the world and Tampa is one of the only cities to hold the event twice. The crowd had about 15,000 more fans in attendance this year than in 2008. The reason for the influx in attendance may have been due to the great variety of themes that participants constructed this year, which included: A flying bra, an oversized mustache, a huge hot dog complete with mustard and ketchup and a team of Willy Wonka’s Oompa Loompas (the 2008 winners). Even Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn was in attendance and helped kick of the event from the start. Flugtag is traditionally a rain-orshine event, but the weather on this

particular morning promised that flights off the three-story launch ramp would be interesting to say the least. It was reported that there were wind gusts of up to 30 mph in the morning. Many teams were forced to hold or tie down the wings of their The Circle-K Flying Hot Dog takes a stylish nose dive into the Hillsaircrafts hours borough River. before the event started to make Flyer and Tampa resident. “We ended sure that their “airplanes” didn’t take up going about 22 ft., which is about off unexpectedly. 100 ft. short of our goal.” The Free Range Flyers of Tampa, a Dusty Showers, the man behind group of young professionals — most the gigantic pink flying bra, and his of whom are engineers in the Tampa team the Flying Basemen showcased Bay area, had the honor of going off their “quadruple- Z cup” sized bra in the ramp first. Flugtag attendees showed up on surfboards, kayaks and motor boats. “With the last name Showers, it’s like I’m on the Weather Channel every day, but this is even better,” he says jokingly about his last name. The Flugtag videos of the flying bra have been replaying on everywhere from CNN to Youtube. In the end, it was the Oompa Loompas out of St. Petersburg who fell the farthest, defending their title as Flugtag champions by managing to launch their “Wonkamobile” an impressive 50-ft. from the launch ramp, despite having a broken wing from an earlier gust of wind. ““We weren’t sure we could fly and the pressure as reigning champions was incredible,” said the Loompas’ pilot

Ryan Howell (front) and The Free Range Flyers of Tampa went first. Keith Humphrey. “We are just so excited to take the title again.” “This is a great event,” Mayor Buckhorn said. “I really hope Tampa hosts it again.”
