The park also will include dogwatering stations and bags to help you clean up after your dog, as well as picnic tables and benches. However, the date for that groundbreaking had not yet been determined as we went to press with this issue. As part of the agreement for the 0.64-acre dog park, which is estimated to cost about $50,000, the Rotary club was tasked by the city with raising half of the funding, with Tampa matching the rest. To reach that goal, the club decided to sell engraved bricks that will be forever part of the walkways leading up to the park. “We kept brick sales open until November 7 because so many people continued to tell us they wanted to buy a brick to support the project,” said Joyce Gunter, the Dog Park project chair for the New Tampa Rotary. According to conceptual drawings of the park, it will contain separate spaces for large and small dogs. The proposed

Dog lovers rejoice, as it looks as though there soon will be a place to let your pooch off the leash in Tampa Palms According to spokesperson Kim Payne of the New Tampa Rotary Club (which meets for breakfast every Friday at 7 a.m. at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club), the club has successfully raised the $25,000 necessary to help pay for the dog park, which will be located next to the New Tampa Rec Center and should not be confused with a planned dog park on Hillsborough County-owned property on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. across from Hunter’s Green (as we reported in our last issue). “Thanks to generous donations from dog lovers and community supporters, the Rotary Club of New Tampa will present the City of Tampa with a $25,000 check for the New Tampa Rotary Dog Park during a ground-breaking event

A Hot Time Was Had By All At The 2014 Wesley Chapel Fall Festival! By Gary Nager

Despite a mid-October heat index that somehow reached close to 100 degrees, the sixth annual Wesley Chapel Fall Festival, presented by the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) and the Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary Club, was another amazing day of free entertainment, wing battles, cute pets for adoption and outstanding vendors. Thankfully, the Chamber, Rotary & Wesley Chapel Lions Club all provided plenty of ice cold water and there were other great food and beverage items for sale to keep everyone hydrated and happy all day. Congratulations to all of

Here I (Finally) Go Tweet, Tweet, Tweet? Seriously?

An editorial by Gary Nager I have now owned the Neighborhood News for more than 20 years, but I have always been the least techsavvy person in our office. To be honest, I’m lucky to be able to properly operate the various computer programs we use to create this publication. For example, I have had a Facebook. com page for a while, but have rarely posted anything original myself, although assistant editor Matt Wiley has been posting Facebook and Twitter.com items on behalf of our publications for almost two years now. Sure, I’ve liked some of not only our “Neighborhood News” Facebook posts, but also some items that friends of mine have posted, but the bottom line is that I haven’t really used Facebook much (especially compared with some of my friends, who post and/or repost/share...let’s call it “stuff”...every day). But, Twitter? I remember when this new way to basically “text” millions of your closest friends worldwide first arrived on the scene, and I dismissed it out of hand as little more than another way to learn how not to write in English. “Texting for mass quantities,” as “The Coneheads” movie might have called Twitter (if it existed at that time), just seemed idiotic to me. But, fast-forward a few years and what can you say other than the fact that “tweeting” seems to be here to stay? So, maybe it is time for me to join the 21st century and start posting tweets and/or Facebook posts

on as close to a daily basis as possible and see if you folks might be interested in the ongoing musings of a madman....umm, I mean community news magazine editor and dining reviewer. The fact is that even though Matt has been doing a great job of breaking our daily “Neighborhood News” online, with some of his posts about major local news events attracting thousands of “hits” in a few hours, I attend more local events in the evening and on weekends than he does, so I probably should be at least providing quickie updates on those events, much less letting thousands or even potentially millions (heck, I’d be happy with a “just a few”) of my closest friends take a glimpse inside my somewhat addled brain on an ongoing basis. So, by the time you receive this issue in your mailbox, you should already be able to access the first couple of tweets/Facebook posts from me. Therefore, if you haven’t already, I hope you’ll go ahead and “Follow” us on Twitter @NTWCNews and “Like” our “Neighborhood News” page on Facebook. My posts on Twitter will be @NTWCNews Gary, where you’ll find everything from (somewhat) original thoughts on everything from politics to road and development updates, as well as however many quickie dining specials I can “tweet out” as possible. #Help!

we know that a lot of you travel to South Tampa, St. Pete, the Gulf beaches from Tarpon Springs to Gulfport and even Orlando to get a taste of something other than our local oversaturation of national and regional chain eateries — and Matt did a great job of capturing the essence of this outstanding Native American-inspired culinary experience in his first dining review effort. The second is that we have been working on new ways to expand what we do in terms of the influence we have on where you go to eat and tweeting different dining specials is just the first phase of that expansion. I’m not ready to make any other announcements about all that just yet, but rest assured, if you own or know someone who owns a restaurant anywhere in the Tampa Bay area — much less right here in New Tampa

and Wesley Chapel — you should check not only these pages every four weeks, but also our website (NTNeighborhoodNews.com) and our Facebook.com and Twitter.com newsfeeds on a daily basis. And, speaking of local restaurateurs, we will post the results of this year’s Reader Dining Survey & Contest (including the winner of this year’s randomly drawn Grand Prize) in our next issue. Make sure you tell the local restaurant owners you visit where they finished, so they know you read about them in the New Tampa Neighborhood News! And, don’t forget that Black Friday is Friday, November 28, this year. I hope you’ll think to shop locally, at The Gift Box (see page 30), The Bridal Showroom (page 40) and all of our local retail advertisers this holiday season!

New Ways To Help Local Restaurants Even More

Speaking of going out to eat, I know that a LOT of you read my dining reviews religiously because every time we have those reviews in these pages, the restaurant owners themselves tell us that our reviews actually bring them more business than all other forms (including online) of marketing and advertising combined. Therefore, I have two pieces of news to share. The first is that I “allowed” (invited?) young Mr. Wiley to post a dining review of his own in this issue of the beautiful and delicious new Ulele (see page 52), which was opened by the Gonzmart family of The Columbia fame a few months ago, in front of Water Works Park just north of downtown Tampa. I hope you’ve noticed that we continue to tell you about restaurants located outside of our two distribution areas because

New Tampa’s Fire Station No. 22 Gets Brand New Fire Engine By Matt Wiley It can be alarming to see the massive brush fires on the news that scorch thousands of acres out west. Florida is no stranger to brush fires, either. To help ensure that brush fires do not get out of hand in the New Tampa area, Tampa Fire Rescue (TFR) has assigned its newest, most technologically-advanced fire engine (photo) to TFR Station No. 22, located on Cross Creek Blvd., a mile west of Morris Bridge Rd. TFR reports that the new engine, a 2014 Pierce Quantum, is not only the newest vehicle in service at “The Double Deuce” (as TFR says Station No. 2 sometimes is referred to), it’s also the newest engine in service for TFR. The engine, which officially began replacing the old Engine 22 on October 24, features a 1,000-gallon water tank, double the size of Station 22’s previous engine. “As a city, we must continue to invest in and provide support for our first responders,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn in an October 27 press release. “The needs of each station vary, depending upon the area they service, but we purchase specialized equipment like this to ensure that the men and women of Tampa Fire Rescue have what they need to keep our community safe.” TFR reports that the extra 500 gallons of water also will come in handy when traveling to Morris Bridge Rd. and other parts of the New Tampa area that may not have hydrant service, ensuring that fires are extinguished more quickly and reducing the

4

risk of potential property damage. “With this engine’s ability to carry more water, (Station 22) firefighters are able to provide better service to the (New Tampa) area,” said Tampa Fire Chief Tom Forward. “More water means more time to fight the fire (immediately) until other units arrive and another water source is available.” TFR Capt. Chris Shepherd says that he’s impressed with his station’s new engine. “It’s really nice,” Shepherd says. “It’s definitely going to come in handy.” Shepherd explains that Station 22 takes calls all up and down Morris Bridge Rd. and many of the homes along that previously rural road sit way back from the roadway itself. “North of Easton Park, some of the homes are more than an eighth of a mile from the road,” Shepherd explains. “We only have 1,000 feet of hose (on a fire engine), so this bigger tank gives us the water to do what we have to do.” In addition to the expanded tank, Capt. Shepherd says that the engine also has an additional firefighter seat, allowing transportation for five firefighters, one more than the old engine. It also features a seatbelt alarm to make sure that those firefighters are traveling safely. “Our old truck was slower, too,” Shepherd says. “This thing really has some kick to it.” Station 22 opened in April of 2012 at 10871 Cross Creek Blvd. and serves the eastern section of New Tampa. Always dial 9-1-1 for any fire emergency.

Family Of Hazing Victim Challenges Ben & Jerry’s To Change Flavor Name By Matt Wiley In their fight to end hazing, the Kowiak family of New Tampa has taken the battle to the front door of Vermont ice cream giant Ben & Jerry’s, after the company recently released its “Hazed & Confused” flavor. The family argues that the name makes a reference to the activity that took Harrison Kowiak’s life in 2008. Lianne, whose son died in a hazing accident in 2008 when he was rushing for the Theta Chi fraternity while attending Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC, petitioned Ben & Jerry’s to change the name when she saw the flavor in a magazine advertisement. However, it doesn’t look as though Ben & Jerry’s has any plans to change the name. “Our Leadership Team and majority of our consumers who have shared their opinions about this understand the popular culture reference (of “Hazed & Infused”) and overwhelmingly feel that the flavor name and the marketing of it in no way supports or infers hazing,” representatives from Ben & Jerry’s said in a statement. The name references “Dazed & Confused,” the song made popular by the rock supergroup Led Zeppelin in the 1970s and again when the 1993 film with the same name (which launched the careers of many stars in its ensemble cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Jason London, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Cole Hauser, Parker Posey, Adam Goldberg, Joey Lauren Adams, Nicky Katt, and Rory Cochrane) was released. The flavor, part of Ben & Jerry’s new “Core” line of flavors, features hazelnut ice cream and hazelnuts, hence the word “hazed” in the title. “Given that understanding, it does not make sense for us to consider changing the name,” the statement says. “For any family to lose a son or daughter to hazing is tragic. Our hearts go out to the family.” Kowiak says that she and her husband Brian were not pleased with the decision. They were told that the name is Ben & Jerry’s “cheeky style humor” that is seen on other cartons of its ice cream, many of which also feature pop culture references, such as “Cherry Garcia” (named after the Grateful Dead’s late guitarist Jerry Garcia) and “Phish Food,” named for another popular rock band.

6

“To say that we were disappointed (with Ben & Jerry’s decision) is an understatement,” Kowiak explains, adding that she sent a letter and followed up with the Ben & Jerry’s consumer affairs office. “Our letter was very factual, with the intent of educating them about the social issues and dangers of hazing. We were hoping that by educating them, they would better understand our position and change the offensive flavor name to something more appropriate. We were careful to keep everything as unemotional as possible — even though it was difficult — and focused on factual hazing statistics.” Kowiak argues that, although the flavor’s name is based upon a pop culture term, the movie that it references actually is centered around high school hazing, which is included in the film’s synopsis. High school freshmen are chased by the older students and paddled. Some are forced to walk through a car wash. “Our objections, along with many other university students, administrators, educators and volunteers throughout the country, is that the name makes light of and thus minimalizes the entire concept of the dangerous and sometimes deadly act of hazing,” Kowiak explains. “It also honors a movie, and, in turn, honors the practices therein, with the plot based upon violent hazing practices.” In addition to the Kowiaks, the family of Robert Champion (the Florida A&M University student who died in a hazing accident in November of 2011), Karla Hunt (an Indiana woman whose son was hazed in high school), Elizabeth Allen (founder

of StopHazing.org) and Hank Nuwer (a long-time hazing prevention advocate) also took issue with the ice cream’s name. Kowiak says that a repThe family of Harrison Kow- resentative from iak (right), who was killed in the University of a 2008 hazing accident, hoped Central Florida that Ben & Jerry’s would mentioned the change the name of its “Hazed issue about the & Confused” ice cream flavor. ice cream flavor’s name before she (Kowiak) spoke to more than 400 students there in late September during National Hazing Prevention Week. She says that she also spoke to a group of more than 500 students on the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus the same week. Harrison died of blunt force trauma to the head, during an activity called “bulldogging.” Harrison and another pledge were instructed to run from one end of a field to the other in the dark. While doing so, members of the fraternity, dressed completely in black, would tackle them as they ran. But, after Harrison was tackled, he slipped into a coma. Members of the fraternity drove him to a local hospital instead of calling 9-1-1. His family never had a chance to speak with him again. Afterward,

the story about what happened continued to change when the surviving students were interviewed by authorities. The Kowiaks filed a lawsuit against both the university and the Theta Chi fraternity and several of its members, and settled out of court in August 2012 for an undisclosed amount. Kowiak says that the money is going towards educating and raising awareness about hazing. “(Ben & Jerry’s) choice of this flavor name is in very poor taste and is extremely inappropriate,” Kowiak says. “To say that we were saddened and shocked by their complete insensitivity is an understatement. We felt it was a real slap in the face to us and to the many others who have been detrimentally impacted by senseless hazing practices, as well as those involved with hazing prevention education.” The aforementioned hazing prevention website StopHazing.org posted a statement prior to the decision also urging Ben & Jerry’s to change the flavor’s name: “Ben & Jerry’s, we ask you to maintain our confidence in your forward-thinking company by using this as an opportunity to educate the public about the problem of hazing and to move quickly to find a new name for your hazelnut ice cream.” Nuwer, meanwhile, wrote on his blog at HankNuwer.com, “Hazed and Confused? Here’s my new motto. ‘We’re not buying it…nor any other Ben & Jerry’s product. Not so long as they put out that offensive flavor.’”

City Council’s Montelione & Mayor Buckhorn Running For Re-Election By Matt Wiley It’s not unusual to see current District 7 (which includes all of New Tampa’s city-based developments) Tampa City Council member Lisa Montelione behind a microphone at City Council meetings. However, it was somewhat more unusual to see her on the microphone behind the counter at Mel’s Hot Dogs (on E. Busch Blvd. in Tampa) on October 1. No, she wasn’t announcing that someone’s order was ready, but announcing the kickoff to her re-election campaign. Montelione — who originally filed her re-election paperwork back in July — won’t be running unopposed, as her predecessor, New Tampa resident Joseph Caetano, filed to run for her District 7 seat back in August. And, while we won’t be able to announce the results of the Nov. 4 General Election until our next issue (those local election returns will be posted on NTNeighborhoodNews.com, however), the nonpartisan City of Tampa elections will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2015. “I wouldn’t be at all surprised if others file to run for (my) seat in the coming months,” Montelione says. “Of course, I was hoping to run unopposed, but I’m still running, whether I’m up against one or five opponents.” The Terrace Park resident says that she is excited to get her campaign under way. “When I started this journey, it was with the hope that I could get more people in my district involved in local government,” Montelione told the crowd of more than 50 supporters and patrons at Mel’s, located just a few blocks from Busch Gardens. “I think I’ve had a degree of success with the folks in the furthest reaches of my district (New Tampa and Tampa Palms), who now frequently contact me about issues in their communities.” Some of these issues include reports about repairs that were needed to sidewalks, signs and roads in West Meadows. Montelione says she was able to help address and correct both issues by helping those residents get in contact with the proper city departments. Montelione says that in order to get more people involved in city government, she has held several “office hours” meetings, during which she makes herself available to residents, at both the New

Mayor Buckhorn Announces Bid For Re-election

In addition to all seven City Council members, the Mayor’s office also is up for grabs in March, but current Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has no plans of relinquishing the seat, after announcing his campaign for re-election in September. “In the last three and a half years, we have laid out an ambitious agenda,” Mayor Buckhorn said in a statement. “We sought to not just recover from the recession, but to transform our economy. Unemployment is down 40 percent, more of our residents are working than ever and more people are moving here every day to be part of the renaissance we’ve created in Tampa.” Buckhorn — who already has raised more than $100,000 for his campaign — faces opposition from Rebecca Jo Rubright, a local political activist and acupuncture physician who owns the Living Harmony Healing Center in Seminole Heights. Rubright filed to run for mayor on September 26 but, at our press time, had not yet reported any campaign contributions. Look for more info about the mayoral race in a future issue.

FHP ‘Intensive Patrol’ Cracks Down On Wrong-Way Driving On Interstates Eleven people have died as the result of wrong-way interstate crashes in the Tampa area since the beginning of the year, many of which were caused by driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Several have involved New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents. As a result of those crashes, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) recently held a weekend-long crackdown on traffic violations on I-275, I-75 and I-4, issuing hundreds of citations and arresting 18 drunk drivers. FHP reports that between October 16-19, the agency enlisted the help of 30 additional troopers from across the state to help patrol all three of those interstate highways in Hillsborough County to target possible DUIs and wrong-way drivers. A release from FHP spokesperson Steve Gaskin says that the October “intensive patrol” was the first of three that will occur in our area, although no date for the future intensive patrols had been announced at our press time. During the first patrol, FHP arrested 18 people for driving under the influence, and there also were 18 separate drug-related arrests. In addition, 16 felony arrests and 45 misdemeanor arrests were made and 161 speeding citations were issued, along with 353 written warnings and 273 other miscellaneous citations.

Aug. Wrong-Way Crash Update

A toxicology report indicates that the

10

wrong-way driver who struck an ambulance driven by a Wesley Chapel resident in August was under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Edward José Duran, 23, of Tampa, died on I-275 near downtown Tampa, after a head-on collision with a Transcare ambulance, just before 3 a.m. on August 15. FHP had received a call about a wrong-way driver in a 1997 Honda Accord (later identified as Duran) headed west on I-4 near 50th St. in the eastbound lanes near Tampa. Duran continued west and merged into the inside, southbound lane of I-275 heading north. At the same time, Tarel Omar Peralta, 24, of Wesley Chapel, was driving the Transcare ambulance with Kemecia Tasha Gaye Smith, 24, of Lutz, headed south on I-275, just north of Floribraska Ave. The two vehicles collided head-on, causing the ambulance to spin counterclockwise and roll onto the driver’s side, landing on the inside southbound shoulder of I-275 facing north. No patients were in the ambulance at the time. The toxicology report indicated that Duran had a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of 0.21 (0.13 points above the legal 0.08 limit). He also tested positive for cocaine. –MW

New Tampa

News Briefs By Matt Wiley

Ashington Juvenile Car Burglars Arrested

It’s always important to make sure that your vehicle doors are locked, even inside gated communities in the New Tampa area. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), on October 26 at 2 p.m., four juveniles were arrested at the Vista Grande at Tampa Palms apartment complex, located on Commerce Park Blvd. TPD reports that a resident of the complex witnessed the juveniles enter his brother’s parked car. The resident followed the suspects through the complex and alerted a security guard. The guard detained the suspects until TPD officers arrived. Following their arrest, the juveniles confessed to entering the vehicle, as well as numerous others in the area. TPD reports that, with the consent of one of the suspect’s parents, one of the juveniles was driven through the nearby Ashington Estates community, where the suspect identified three vehicles that were entered and eight others that the group checked, but were locked. TPD recovered numerous items from the suspects, including $240 in cash, a set of headphones, a large amount of loose change, cigarette lighters and rolled marijuana cigarettes. The suspects also admitted to entering cars outside of Koizi Endless Hibachi Japanese restaurant, located in the Pointe at Tampa Palms shopping center. The juveniles were charged with auto burglary and transported to the Hillsborough Juvenile Assessment Center.

Tuscany Robber Arrested, Two Suspects Escape

One suspect is in custody, but two others avoided capture, following a robbery in the Tuscany community of Tampa Palms Area 3. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), officers responded to a call at 5:40 p.m. on October 23 about an armed robbery that occurred inside a residence on Tuscany Woods Dr. The two

victims told TPD that they had come to the home to purchase a vehicle. The victims said that while they were in the home, they were confronted by two black or possibly Hispanic males wearing hooded sweatshirts and dark shorts, as well as a 16-year-old from Lutz, all of whom were armed with semi-automatic handguns. The victims say the suspects forced them to hand over a “substantial amount of money.” Following the armed robbery, the juvenile fled in a black Dodge Challenger. TPD responded and secured the entrance to the subdivision and then interviewed the victims. Not long after TPD received the description of the vehicle, it was spotted leaving the Tuscany community. Officers pulled the car over at Tampa Palms Blvd. and Ashbury Palms Dr. and arrested the juvenile suspect. The two other suspects were not in the vehicle and air support and K-9 units were called in to search the surrounding area, but the suspects were not located. The incident was still under investigation and no additional information was available at our press time.

New Tampa YMCA Youth Coordinator Found Deceased

The New Tampa Family YMCA is mourning the loss of one of its own, as the organization’s youth sports coordinator recently was discovered deceased. According to a statement from the YMCA (located on Compton Dr. in Tampa Palms), youth sports coordinator Charlie Bradley, III, was found unresponsive in his office on October 14. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Bradley began at the New Tampa YMCA in March of 2012 as a youth zone attendant and took on the job as youth sports coordinator in September of 2013. Tampa Metropolitan YMCA spokesperson Lalita Llerena said that the YMCA staff remembers Charlie as a cherished employee who loved interacting with kids, coaches and members of the Y. At our press time, Llerena said that the YMCA had not yet been contacted by the Medical Examiner’s Office with

Bradley’s official cause of death.

Freedom High Booster Busted For Stealing Funds

Booster clubs are formed to help raise money for school clubs. However, funds recently raised at Freedom High (located on Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms), have been going to other uses. TPD reports that Smith Cornelius Smith, 40, of the Watergrass community of West Meadows in New Tampa, has been arrested for stealing money from the Freedom High Booster Club, of which he was the club’s treasurer. Smith reportedly withdrew more than $15,000 during an eight-day period in October from ATM machines. Surveillance video and photographs reportedly show Smith making the alleged transactions. The TPD report states that when Smith was confronted by Booster Club Board members, he immediately resigned and was uncooperative with the investigation. Smith was arrested on October 14 at his home and charged with grand theft. He was released from the Hillsborough County Jail on Oct. 17 on a $10,000 bond.

released on bond, three days after robbing and fleeing the USF Federal Credit Union branch in New Tampa. According to TPD, at 12:30 p.m. on October 7, a black male in his early 20s, wearing a Philadelphia Phillies hat, white T-shirt, navy blue basketball shorts and gray tennis shoes, walked into the credit union, located at 6417 E. County Line Rd. in the Winn-Dixie shopping plaza off BBD. After developing leads, TPD detectives were able to identify the suspect as Derrick Anthony Landers Landers, 26, of the Grand Reserve at Tampa Palms apartments. TPD reports that Landers handed the teller a note, after which he was given cash and fled on a dark blue mountain bike. A silver 2013-14 Toyota Camry was caught on surveillance footage driving suspiciously in the parking lot at the same time as the robbery. Landers was arrested at The Walk at Highwoods Preserve shopping plaza in New Tampa on Oct. 10 at 12:52 a.m. and booked at the Hillsborough County Jail. His booking info lists his employer as the U.S. Army. Landers was charged with one count of strong arm robbery, third-degree grand theft and one charge of intent to defraud. He was released just before 9:30 a.m. the same day on a $11,500 bond.

First-Ever ‘Crystal Lagoons’ In U.S. Coming To Wesley Chapel! By Matt Wiley

Wesley Chapel soon will be home to a beach. Well, not really. But, when development is complete at the Epperson Ranch South (ERS) Master-Planned Unit Development (MPUD) — located north of the Bridgewater community off Curley Rd. — it will be home to the first Crystal Lagoons pools in the U.S. More than 300 Crystal Lagoons — massive, self-sustaining, crystal-clear swimming pools — already have been built or are in development in 60 countries around the globe, and now the technology company that created them (Miami-based Crystal Lagoons US, Corp.) has made an agreement with the ERS developer — Tampa-based Metro Development Group — to install several in Epperson Ranch. The original Epperson Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI) has been dormant for years, after the original developer (Miami-based Lennar Homes) sold the property to Metro in 2007. The DRI since has been split into three MPUDs that also include the Epperson Ranch Town Center (also located north of Bridgewater on Curley Rd., just south of Elam Rd.) and EPCO Ranch North, which is located off Curley Rd., north of Elam Rd. Metro received approval from the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) for the development in 2009, and is poised to break ground by the beginning of next year, says Metro president Greg Singleton. “(This community) is a real game-

16

changer,” Singleton says. “This is the first (Crystal Lagoon) being built in the entire country.” Singleton explains that the final site plans are still going through the approval process with Pasco County, but that Metro is going to build 1,516 homes in four separate communities, each with its own six-acre lagoon, which will serve as a sort of community pool and gathering place. “An Olympic-sized pool is about 0.3 acres,” Singleton explains. “This is 20 times that size.” The lagoons will feature various depths to provide something for everyone. Singleton says that there will be beach-style wade-in areas for toddlers and those who are looking for a shallow water experience, as well as deeper areas (some up to eight-feetdeep) for swimming and water sports, like kayaking and paddle boarding. Crystal Lagoons US Corp. CEO Kevin Morgan says that, although these lagoons are massive, they can be constructed and even maintained for about the same investment cost of a resort-style, Olympic-sized (25 meters x 50 meters) pool. “Developers will say, ‘If it’s so inexpensive to build, it must be really expensive to operate,’” Morgan explains. “But, the answer is ‘no.’” In fact, Morgan says that in a 12-month operating period, a six-acre lagoon can be run for the same cost as a heated, Olympic-sized pool. He explains that the lagoons initially will be filled using local well water, but then will be refilled naturally throughout the year

— with rainwater. “It will require very little ‘makeup’ water,” Morgan says. “Based upon the amount of rain throughout the year (in Florida), there’s usually a high accumulation during the summer, and the lagoons act as a major Above is the first-ever Crystal Lagoon, a 20-acre lagoon-style catch basin. Baseball Complex Submits Financial Plan By Matt Wiley

It’s the bottom of the ninth, there’s a full-count with two outs. There’s the pitch, a swing and a base hit to keep the project that could bring a world-class baseball training complex to Wesley Chapel alive. After two deadline extensions, Blue Marble Sports has now submitted a financing plan to Pasco County that representatives from the company hope will allow for the release of millions of dollars in county funding that will finally secure the project and get it moving. On October 13, the county received Blue Marble’s financing plan, but Pasco Tourism manager Ed Caum said in an October 14 press release that it would take at least a week to review the materials. However, there was still no agenda item set for a County Commission vote at our press time. “This project is the culmination of years of searching for a key partner to help create a sports destination in Pasco County that will serve the entire Tampa Bay region,” Caum said in the release. “Pasco County and (Blue Marble Sports) are looking forward to working together to start building what is expected to be a one-of-a-kind, 19-field sports complex.” In order for the county to release the $11 million in tourist taxes and bond revenue that it has committed to bringing the baseball facility to

18

fruition, Blue Marble was tasked with showing that the company had at least $23-million in financing. The facility is to be built on 200 acres of land donated by the Porter family inside the Wiregrass Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI), and once completed, the 19-field complex will include nine MLB-size fields. Blue Marble’s James Talton could not be reached for comment, but he told the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) during an Economic Development Council meeting in September that he and his partner, retired MLB great Gary Sheffield, would be working until the last minute to secure a financing plan. Sheffield told WCCC ambassadors that he has been in talks with representatives from the Atlanta Braves about potentially moving their current spring training operation to Wesley Chapel from Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex. In addition, he also said that former big leaguers Bo Jackson and Cal Ripken, Jr., are interested in possibly hosting some of their respective Little League Baseball camps at the Wesley Chapel facility. “We are excited this is moving forward and hope the county reviews the plan quickly,” says Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce executive director Hope Allen. Stay tuned for updates about this project as they become available.

Florida Hospital Tampa To Open State-Of-The-Art Emergency Room/ICU In An Emergency, Call 9-1-1 Immediately! According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 130 million Americans visit an emergency room (ER) every year, for everything from injury-related emergencies like broken bones, cuts and burns to unexplained illnesses like chest, abdominal and head pain. But, how do you know when it’s time to go to the ER? Unfortunately, this is a question many people only ask themselves when faced with a personal emergency. Dr. Wenzel Tirheimer, the Emergency Room Medical Director at Florida Hospital Tampa on E. Fletcher Ave. at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., has been a Board-certified emergency medicine physician for more than 14 years and has seen a wide variety of emergencies. “When you practice emergency medicine, you see people at their most vulnerable point,” Dr. Tirheimer says. “The fear and uncertainty of what to do in an emergency can be as bad as the pain or illness you’re feeling.” According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the following signs and symptoms constitute emergencies that may require medical attention: • Head injury, with fainting and/ or confusion • Injury to neck or spine, especially with loss of feeling or inability to move • Trouble breathing

24

• Passing out, fainting • Dizziness or weakness that does not go away • Severe chest pain or pressure • Pain in the arm or jaw • Sudden unusual or very bad headache • Suddenly not being able to speak, see, walk, or move • Sudden weakness or drooping on one side of face or body • Seizures, especially those that last 3-5 minutes • Possible broken bones, loss of movement • Coughing or throwing up blood • Severe pain anywhere on the body • Severe burn • Severe allergic reaction with trouble breathing, swelling and/or hives • High fever that doesn’t get better with medicine • Throwing up or loose stools that don’t stop When it comes to the question of whether or not to go to the ER, Dr. Tirheimer’s advice is simple: “Always err on the side of caution,” Dr. Tirheimer says. “If you think you or a loved one may need emergency medical care, call 9-1-1 immediately.” This is especially true for head and neck

traumas, which don’t always present symptoms right away. New Tampa Internal Medicine Keeps You Healthy From The Inside Out By Amy Gutierrez

Most people are unaware of the primary care role an Internist (or internal medicine physician) has in our overall health care maintenance. Dr. Zubair Farooqui, M.D. (photo), of New Tampa Internal Medicine Associates, routinely sees adults (ages 18 and older) as their Primary Care Physician. Dr. Farooqui performs full physical exams, wellness visits, minor dermatological procedures (such as cyst, wart and skin tag removal) and administers joint injections, lipid screening tests, in-office EKGs and checks the lungs with spirometers (a breathing device that measures the volume of air inhaled and exhaled), administers adult vaccines, provides weight-loss and nutrition consultations, as well as diabetes counseling and treatment management. In other words, your overall health is his job. Thanks to opening a beautiful new office this past August that is located in North Tampa (just south of the intersection of E. Bearss Ave. and Bruce B. Downs {BBD} Blvd. on University Cove Pl.), near the University of South Florida (USF) and Florida Hospital Tampa (FHT), New Tampa residents are now minutes away from state-of-the-art medical care. “I opened my Internal Medicine office at this location because it is

28

close to I-275, I-75, USF, and Florida Hospital Tampa,” Dr. Farooqui explains. “It is conveniently located for residents of New Tampa, Carrollwood, Lutz and Temple Terrace. It’s also convenient for people who work or go to school in this area.” Internal medicine physicians are specialists who diagnose, treat and care for adults of all ages, whether they are enjoying good medical health or need expertise to treat complex illnesses. At least three of the seven or more years of medical school and postgraduate training internal medicine physicians are required to have are dedicated to learning how to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases that affect adults. Dr. Farooqui graduated from the prestigious University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He then attended medical school at UNIBE School of Medicine in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he earned his MD degree, before completing an Internal Medicine residency at Wright State University in Dayton, OH. Dr. Farooqui says that internists

are equipped to deal with whatever problems a patient brings — no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex. They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can properly treat severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness (disease prevention and the promotion of health), women’s health, substance abuse, mental health, as well as effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs. “My business is different from other practices because I maintain continuity with my patients (as they age) and I also have privileges at (FHT),” he explains. “I conduct rounds (there) for my hospitalized patients.” Kathryn, one of Dr. Farooqui’s patients who lives in Tampa says, “Dr. Farooqui is my idea of a primary care doctor. I have several health problems and I see specialists for them. Dr. Farooqui keeps in touch with them and coordinates my care in a way that increases my sense of well-being. I’m glad I found (him).” Dr. Farooqui says, “I always wanted to be a doctor — ever since I was five years old growing up in New York. Both of my parents are doctors

and I always enjoyed going to the clinic and hospital with them to watch them at work and to see the look of gratitude and appreciation on the faces of the people they took care of.“ Grateful that he can now have that same interaction with his own patients while helping them cope with their respective illnesses, he says that helping to alleviate his patients’ pain and seeing them recover is truly rewarding to him. He also says he enjoys the way he is able to really get to know his patients as their primary care physician, which allows him to provide care for the “whole patient,” while also helping to educate them about how to take better care of themselves and coordinate their treatment plans. Another convenience is the fact that New Tampa Internal Medicine can deliver immediate, on-site test results, without taking much blood from a patient. And, to help patients feel at ease while waiting at the office, a complimentary computer with internet access is available. Although he originally is from New York, Dr. Farooqui says that the beaches and great weather drew him to Florida. Upon first coming to Tampa in 2006, he worked as a hospitalist (a physician whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients). Hospitalists

provide patient care, teaching, research and leadership related to Hospital Medicine. He says that this invaluable experience has helped him in his responsibilities at two local nursing homes — University Village Nursing Center on N. 22nd St. and at Palm Garden of Tampa Nursing Home on E. 138th Ave., where he currently serves as the Medical Director, overseeing 16 doctors. A New Tampa resident, Dr. Farooqui says he and his family love this area. His wife, Amana, is his office manager. The Gift Box Boutique Has Something For Everyone This Holiday Season! By Celeste McLaughlin

As the holidays approach, we all start looking for the perfect gift – something unique and personal that shows how much we care. But, for those people who seem to have it all, how can we give something that is truly special without having to take out a mortgage? That’s where The Gift Box Boutique comes in. Located in the Shoppes at The Pointe shopping plaza next to Stonewood Grill in Tampa Palms, the one-of-a-kind, fun shop has been open since June. Owner Jennifer Colón stocks an impressive array of gifts, home décor items, women’s clothing and jewelry and Jennifer promises that you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for in

her store, whether you’re shopping for a gift for someone else or just a treat for yourself. Jennifer and her husband Rick moved to Tampa from Dallas seven years ago, and now live in Tampa Palms with their seven year old son, Jackson. Jennifer had been a stay-at-home mom since her son was born, and previously held corporate jobs, including her last position as a national account manager for Dr. Pepper and 7-Up. Prior to opening The Gift Box Boutique this summer, Jennifer had a small gift business in another storefront in the Carrollwood area. She says she really wanted to bring the concept to New Tampa. “There was such a void for this type of business in our area,” says Jennifer. “We have great stores, but not much outside of the usual ‘big box’ concept.” In part because The Gift Box is smaller than big box home stores, Jennifer says it’s easier to find fun gifts you won’t find anywhere else at her store. This is both because of the varied, hand-selected, on-trend inventory and the way it is displayed, so that items are easy to find. “Our goal is to provide unique gifts and great customer service,” says Jennifer. “We want to be known for that.” For example, she says, regular

customers will often call and tell her for whom they’re shopping. By the time they arrive at the store, the staff has pulled together a selection of items to make the customer’s shopping experience even easier. Another example, she says, is that many USF students come into the shop regularly, and are a great source of on-trend ideas. For example, because of their suggestions, she says, the store has started carrying the popular Lokai beaded bracelets. She says that customers have been giving her extremely positive feedback, and many of them say that they have been waiting for this type of store in our area. “It’s a neighborhood place where they know they can find what they’re looking for, whether it’s clothing, gifts, or something for their home,” Jennifer explains. Shelly Alt, who lives in Cross Creek, says she has loved everything about the store, from the moment she first walked in. “I’m from a small town, where my family owns a retail jewelry business,” Shelly says. “I feel like The Gift Box is the kind of store you’d expect back home, in a small town, because of the service, the selection of products and how great you feel when you walk out the door.” Shelly adds that The Gift Box is bright and inviting, and although it’s filled with lots of merchandise, it’s still easy to walk around the store. She says she usually shops for others, but she

She’s a huge fan of the store’s Sweaty Bands headbands and also the selection of maxi skirts. “There are so many fun, exciting, and unique things in the store,” Shelly says. “I can find something for everyone, including me.” She says she often finds herself thinking about how different items in The Gift Box remind her of specific people. One of her favorite finds was a wine bottle with an umbrella inside, which made her think of her wine-loving sister-in-law. “As the mom of four kids, I don’t have time to go (to South Tampa or In-

GreatFlorida Insurance Helps Insure Your Most Prized Possessions By Kelly Miller

It may seem like signing up for online insurance would be the quickest and easiest route, but Bill Sullivan of GreatFlorida Insurance, which has an office in the Cory Lake Professional Center off Cross Creek Blvd., says don’t be fooled. “An algorithm can’t possibly understand the complexities of your family,” he says. “When you want to protect yourself and your loved ones from disaster, the best course of action is to talk to an expert in the field.” GreatFlorida is “Insurance for Floridians by Floridians” and has been in business since 1991. The New Tampa office was opened in 2005 by a previous owner who decided to sell her franchise ownership to Sullivan in May 2013. Sullivan earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from George Washington University in Washington, DC, and then worked in investment banking for 25 years in New England. Looking to make a change, he and his wife Julie moved down to Florida in August of 2012. Bill got his “2-20” insurance license so he could sell all lines of Property & Casualty Insurance. Julie also works in the office as the general manager and is a Licensed 4-40 Sales and Service Representative. GreatFlorida’s Heidi Slagle also is a Licensed 4-40 Sales and Service Representative. A “4-40” agent may sell

36

policies, answer questions about insurance and collect premiums under the direction of a “2-20” agent. On November 3, GreatFlorida welcomed new agent Brittany Gardner, who earned her B.A. degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders from the University of South Florida in Tampa and now also has her “2-20” Property and Casualty insurance license. Sullivan says that he and his staff take the time to get to know each of their customers personally, to understand their customers’ needs and discuss the ways insurance can help protect them. “That’s what I like most,” Sullivan says, “the personal interaction I have with the clients. I get to know them and their family and build a relationship.” He not only assesses his clients’ current needs, but also figures out what they may require in the future. For example, if a family has a 13-year-old, Sullivan knows that in a few years, he’ll have to adjust their auto insurance policy for the new teenage driver. Also, he explains that most clients are unaware that while their child is away at college, that child still is covered under their parent’s policy, even if they’re out of state, as long as the auto insurance is in the parent’s name and the vehicle has the corresponding Florida tag.

carriers to find every one of his customers the best coverage at the right price. He’s able to write insurance for the entire state of Florida, but he mainly services the immediate area of New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Lutz, Zephyrhills and Land O’Lakes. The types of insurance offered at New Tampa’s GreatFlorida location, as well as all of the other franchises across the state, include: • Auto

• Boat • Motorcycle • Homeowners • Renters • Business • Flood • “Umbrella” (liability) Note-Some GreatFlorida agents also offer health and life insurance, but these two types of policies are not available at the New Tampa office.

@NTWCNews

If you’re not familiar with umbrella liability insurance, it kicks in once you’ve met your regular policy maximums. It provides extra liability protection against lawsuits, property damage, injuries, slander and libel, worldwide incidents and false arrest or imprisonment. Emmett O’Barr has been a client of GreatFlorida’s for the past seven years. He was raised in Tampa, but has since moved to Belleair Beach, FL. He was so happy with the service he received at GreatFlorida that he continued using the New Tampa office even after he moved. “I appreciate how quick and responsive they are to my needs,” O’Barr explains. “When my boat policy came up for renewal, I wanted to see if Heidi (Slagle) could find me a better deal. She was able to combine my auto and boat insurance to save me $135 a month!” GreatFlorida is committed to helping Floridians make informed decisions about their insurance needs. Sometimes when families want to save money, they’ll leave out something important in their coverage. Later, when disaster strikes, they’re shell-shocked that they weren’t adequately covered, which could put them at risk for a serious loss — and at a serious financial disadvantage. “I want my clients to fully understand what their coverage does for them,” Sullivan explains. “I have the ability to inform them of the impact of their decisions. They won’t get that online.”

Neighborhood News

When Kyle Briese bought his first home, which was located off S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel, he needed homeowner’s insurance. “I wanted to get coverage from a local company, someone easy to work with,” he says. He emailed GreatFlorida and, within an hour, got a call back from the agency. “They worked hard to find the best coverage that fit into my budget.” Briese adds that he was so pleased with the customer service that he since has requested a quote for an additional insurance product. GreatFlorida is a member of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Tampa Independent Insurance Agents group. Sullivan says that he’s a big supporter of Tampa’s Fraternal Order of Police.

The Bridal Showroom Has The Perfect Dress For Your Big Day! By Kelly Miller

Many movies and TV shows have depicted women stampeding over each other trying to find a wedding dress at a bridal warehouse sale. Don’t suffer through that kind of experience when you can relax and actually enjoy the process of finding your perfect dress at The Bridal Showroom. This new boutique just opened in the Renaissance Professional Park next to Bright Horizons at Seven Oaks, off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. (between Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel and S.R. 54). The Bridal Showroom offers a wide variety of wedding dresses, tuxedo rentals, bridesmaids’ dresses, bridal accessories and prom and Quinceanera dresses (the Latin American celebration for girls turning 15). Owner Heidi Sulpher opened the shop in April of this year. “I chose the Wesley Chapel location because I wanted The Bridal Showroom to have a more private feel, instead of a big retailer look,” she says — and she definitely succeeded. When you walk through the door, you feel like you’re in a private showroom and know right away that you’re going to receive excellent customer service. “I love what I do,” Sulpher explains, “and I want to make everyone who comes here feel special.” Sulpher has more than 20 years of experience in the bridal industry. Her mother owned a bridal store and Sulpher started helping when she was only 14. She says she later became a sales representative

40

for a variety of bridal lines spanning a tenyear period. This year she decided to make a change and, using her vast knowledge of the industry, opened her own shop.

‘Private Label’ Wedding Dresses

“What makes The Bridal Showroom so unique is that we only offer Private Label wedding dresses,” Sulpher says, noting that all of the dresses are from nationally recognized designers and made exclusively for bridal shop boutiques. While they may be from top brands, the designers’ names don’t even appear on the dresses. Sulpher says her dresses aren’t widely promoted to the public and, while some are shown in bridal magazines, many can only be found at a few boutique stores across the country. That means brides are able to find that one-of-a kind dress without the worry that ten other women will have the same one. With more than 150 different wedding dresses to choose from, you’re sure to find “the” dress for your big day. Sulpher says the 2015 lines have just arrived, so now is a great time to stop in. You can choose from a wide variety of colors, from traditional white, off-white, cream and champagne to more exotic colors like red and even navy blue. There also are many cuts offered (including mermaid, princess, empire, sheath and ball gown), as well as a range of necklines (including sweetheart, v-neck, sheer, scoop and more).

And, to make sure your dress fits like a glove, The Bridal Showroom will schedule all the necessary fittings to make that possible. Sulpher doesn’t have a seamstress on staff, but works with an independent one who will come in, if necessary, to help fit a client’s dress. “Leave me for last,” Sulpher tells future brides who are just beginning their wedding planning, “because you’re definitely going to find a dress here.” Another benefit of shopping at The Bridal Showroom is that you can customize your wedding dress. For example, if you find a style you like but you’d rather have sleeves added or a different neckline, Sulpher can order the Owner Heidi Sulpher of The Bridal Showroom, dress just the way you want it. located off BBD Blvd. in Seven Oaks. Wesley Chapel bride-to-be Jessica Tricoche says she was a little Heidi was during the process. “I ended up intimidated the first time she walked into staying until 8:30 that night — two and a The Bridal Showroom. Whether you choose to wear a beautiful tiara or a stunning necklace, the shop can provide you with just the right sparkle to spruce up your look. Seven Oaks resident Jennifer Luebers says she had visited several bridal shops in search of a dress for her wedding this past October. “Once I told them (the other boutiques) my budget, they left me alone in the back of the store looking through the sales rack,” Luebers explains, adding that her experience at The Bridal Showroom was completely different. “Heidi was amazing. She carved out an appointment time just for me and was completely focused on helping me find the perfect dress.” Luebers also says she appreciated how Heidi assisted her with trying on each

dress. With numerous snaps and buttons, many wedding dresses can be tricky to put on properly. When Luebers fell in love with a mermaid-style dress, she was worried it wouldn’t be in her price range, but when she read the tag, it was much less than the amount she’d budgeted. “There were tears in my eyes,” Luebers says. “It was the perfect moment.” Sulpher adds that dresses at The Bridal Showroom range from as low as $400$2,800. The Bridal Showroom has been stocking dresses for prom since Since the beginning of November. Sulpher says that you will find dresses in her boutique that no other shops in the immediate area offer. Sulpher says she believes, “Every dress — bridal, prom or Quinceanera — should have an element of uniqueness.” In fact, Sulpher says she stocks Quinceanera dresses all year long. She’s fluent in Spanish and can help every girl find the dress that will make her feel like a “Princesa.”

Sulpher knows how costly planning a wedding can be and to help your pocketbook, she’s running a “Black Friday” sale of 50-percent-off select dresses. ‘Trick’s Kicks’ & Fisher House Golf Tourneys Raise Thousands Each! By Gary Nager

Congratulations to my friend Valerie Casey, who once again hosted (on Oct. 24) her eighth successful golf tournament to benefit the Tampa Fisher House (info below), and to the organizers of the first annual ‘Trick’s Kicks’ Memorial Golf Tournament, which also raised thousands of dollars to benefit a great cause on Oct. 18.

Trick’s Kicks Tourney Raises $7K

A little more than a year after Wharton High grad and Hunter’s Green resident Patrick Strom was killed in a single car crash in his neighborhood, his family, friends and supporters have honored his memory with a wonderful golf event at Heritage Isles Country Club. Patrick’s father Dick says that about 60 golfers participated in the first-ever “Trick’s Kicks” Memorial Golf Tourney, which helped the nonprofit Trick’s Kicks, Inc., raise $7,000. “A wonderful time was had by all,” Dick says. “The money we raised will all go towards purchasing more athletic shoes (aka “kicks”) for underprivileged kids in our area.” The organization, which is all volunteer-run, already has helped donate quality, new “kicks” for kids at Everyday Blessings, a shelter for kids taken from the parents (because of abuse and other reasons), so the tourney certainly will help purchase a lot more shoes to donate.

Neighborhood News

In addition, Trick’s Kicks, Inc., will host a “cookie exchange” on Sunday, December 7, 2 p.m.-4 p.m., also at Heritage Isles. Come check out the decadent baked goods and help this worthy cause. For more info, visit TricksKicks.com.

Fisher House Tourney Tops Goal

As wonderful causes go, few (at least in my opinion) are more important than the Fisher House, the residence which houses and feeds — at no charge — the families and significant others of the wounded soldiers being treated at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. And, thanks to Val, the Arbor Greene resident from a military family who has organized and run the annual golf tourney to benefit the Tampa Fisher House, more than $210,000 has been raised in the eight years of the event, including surpassing her goal of $30,000 this year. Although she is so proud of her committee, led by her fellow New Tampa Noon Rotary Club members Barry and Clare Shuman, her sponsors and supporters for their efforts this year, Val says that she is most proud of the fact that there were at least twelve Purple Heart recipients on hand for this year’s tournament, including not only injured U.S. Army Ranger Romy Camargo, but also Steven Hill, one of the Green Berets who saved Romy’s life. Tampa Fisher House director Paula Welenc and Fisher House national Board member and U.S. Marines Lt. Gen. (ret.) Marty Steele also were thankful for the efforts of Val and those involved in providing these funds, which are donated directly to the Tampa Fisher House each year. Donations are still being accepted. Please email ValCasey3@aol.com or visit FisherHouse.org for more info.

@NTWCNews

At the inaugural ‘Trick’s Kicks’ Memorial golf outing, the first place team (of 20 teams) was made up of Gerry Castro, Bob Aronson, Rusty Whitehurst & Bill Friedrich. The second place team included Dick Strom, Jim Langer, Joe Deapo and Pat Coon.

(Clockwise from above left): Fisher House Golf Classic organizer Val Casey, volunteers Barry & Clare Shuman, Fisher House Tampa director Paula Welenc, injured U.S. Army Ranger Romy Camargo & Green Beret Steven Hill, Mini of Wesley Chapel & great food from Cypress Point Community Church, Little Greek Restaurant & Ciao! Italian Bistro all helped make the eighth annual tournament a success.

Thousands Help Make Strides Against Breast Cancer At Wiregrass! By Gary Nager

There’s no doubt that because so many women are diagnosed with and/or lose their lives to breast cancer every year, it is one of the forms of this most deadly of diseases that arouses the most passion of just about any illness. So, no one should be surprised when those passions — and perfect weather — inspired between 5,000-6,000 people to participate in this year’s American Cancer Society (ACS) “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” of Pasco 5K walk on Oct. 25. The course sent thousands of pink-brawearing men and women walking between the Shops at Wiregrass mall and Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC). ACS specialist for community events Jannah McDonald says that this year’s Making Strides of Pasco has raised about $195,000, including pledges and cash sponsorships, as 100+ breast cancer survivors and their caregivers were among the 1,700-1,800 registered participants, all of whom were joined by several thousand others for a great cause. The pics on this page do the “Pink Army” justice, but fall short of properly showing the amount of love that these folks have for those they’ve lost, those who still battle against breast cancer and those who hope never to be touched by it themselves. Although I don’t have room to list all of the sponsors here, Jannah asked me to give a shout out to Xavier, the GM of Cantina Laredo at the Wiregrass Mall, which donated all of the food “and everything” for 200 people (survivors and caregivers) for the “Survivor Breakfast” served before the event, as well as the Parks Auto Group, for its $6,000 additional donation (over

Gonzmart Family Scores With New, Native American-Inspired Ulele! By Matt Wiley

Don’t choke on the price point, Ulele is an experience. For years, the Tampa Waterworks building in Tampa Heights has been decaying, forgotten in the shadow of downtown. But, that all changed last year when the Gonzmart family of Ybor City’s Columbia Restaurant fame secured a lease from the City of Tampa and announced plans to pump millions into resurrecting the historic, 100-yearold building (photo this page). Legend has it that Ulele (pronounced you-lay-lee) was the daughter of a Tocabogan Native American chief who saved an explorer by throwing herself over him as he was about to be executed. Sound familiar? The rest is on the menu, along with some of the city’s best new tastes from Chef Eric Lackey. It all begins when you pull up to the old, red brick water pumping station on N. Highland Ave. and hand the valet your keys. Positioned on the riverbank next to the new Water Works Park, diners descend a set of stairs next to a natural spring. As you walk through the front doors, which are clad in colorful motor engine gears, the open atmosphere at Ulele is striking. To the right is the striking bar area, complete with embedded arrowheads, further emphasizing Ulele’s Native American motif.

52

Bartenders bustle about between the bottle-filled shelves, which glide like sliding glass doors. Servers swiftly squeeze between tables in the hightraffic dining room. Facing the bar is the massive barbacoa grill, with ample space for the wide range of chops, fish, steak and even garden-fresh veggies that sizzle over open flames. The two-story dining area is split by a staircase, under which Ulele’s expansive wine collection is housed. On the other side, tables are greeted with sweeping views of the Tampa Riverwalk through sizable open doors and windows. Dusk’s “golden hour” shines straight into Ulele, as orange rays gleam off the Hillsborough River. The walls are adorned with various paintings and artwork, as well as original signage from the building’s days of pumping water. History abounds. Dining at the bar doesn’t disappoint. Ulele has several bartenders, to handle the high-energy crowd that keeps coming, but the service is never slack. Once seated, diners are presented with two double-sided menus, one for the drinker in you, the other covered in Lackey’s gastronomic creations. For the beer connoisseur, Ulele crafts its own brews on-site. Consider the citrusy bitterness of the hoppy pale ale or the approachable and seasonal Oktoberfest. But, sign a prenuptial before sipping the over-hyped and

fruity “Wedding Beer” lager. Play your cards right and you could find yourself on a tour of the 15-barrel brewery with brewmaster Tim Shackton. Check out the unique preparations of local oysters, including charbroiled, or served in spiced apple cabbage “boats.” For the adventurous, Ulele offers a different way to put the shellfish down quick — in a shot of tequila! Easy to swallow, but difficult to comprehend, the smooth, salty oyster shot with spicy tomato sangrita sauce is an experience worth noting. Once seated, diners get a peek at Ulele’s unique nosh, a Native American-influenced smorgasbord of steaks and seafood, among other peculiar pairings. The servers are knowledgeable

and always ripe with recommendations. For starters, look no further than the Jalapeno Corn Beer Quick Bread, an ample, golden loaf of spice to share. The Chilled Florida avocado soup is quick to cool the corn bread. Frosty and glistening emerald, the soup is another mind-melter. The charred corn datil pepper relish adds a dash of smoked spice, steering the soup from sweetness. However, Ulele’s entrées truly stand out. Jealous eyes follow the robust scent of the Crackling Pork Shank. Like a sizzling fajita, it’s difficult not to notice the beastly, 1-½-pound slab of crispy pork fit for a culinary caveman. Trade the club for a fork. The 8 oz. Flank Steak, too, is

Dr. Scheu Says ‘Thanks’

Congratulations to my friend from the Wesley Chapel Rotary Club Dr. William Scheu, DC, of New Tampa Chiropractic & Injury Center (located at 2312 Crestover Ln., off S.R. 56 & Cypress Ridge Blvd., in the Cypress Ridge Professional Center), for hosting a successful Patient Appreciation party with delicious grilled burgers and hot dogs, an inflatable slide for the kids and drawings for great prizes, including a 32-inch flatscreen TV. Dr. Scheu (in back, with sunglasses in the photo, right) says he was thrilled with the turnout of about 100 of his patients and their families (plus, some health-oriented vendors) and will definitely host the event again next year. For appointments and more information, call New Tampa Chiropractic & Injury Center at 994-6111 or visit ConfortiChiropractic.com.

Downs (BBD) Blvd.), who held a fund raiser to benefit Making Strides of Pasco at the bank the same day as Dr. Scheu’s event. On hand (photo below) were representatives of Mary Kay, Scentsy and many other fine shop-at-home jewelry and gift vendors, and there also was free food and beverages. And, while only about $250 was raised at the event,

there’s no doubt that the “pre-party” got everyone who attended it ready for Making Strides of Pasco the following Saturday. “It was fun,” Mary Ann said. “We got people thinking about Making Strides and gifts for the holidays.” For more information about Central Bank, call 929-4477 or visit CentralBankFL.com.

It’s been a while since we told you that the long-vacant gas station building in front of the Pebble Creek Collection (PCC) on BBD was going to reopen as a Circle K/Chevron gas station. Well, PCC landlord John Martinez says that the gas station and convenience store should be online soon, as new gas pumps could be installed before the end of this month and the station and store itself could be open sometime before the end of the year. We’ll keep you posted about any new developments.

Gladstone’s Closed? Oh No!

Even though it was located on E. Fowler Ave. in Temple Terrace and not in New Tampa proper, I was shocked and saddened to find out that Gladstone’s Grilled Chicken had closed. I first sampled Gladstone’s at the first Taste of New Tampa in 1994 (at Hunter’s Green Country Club) and tried for years to get the owners to open a New Tampa or Wesley Chapel location.

Young Cory Lake Isles Gymnast To Train With Olympians In Colorado! By Matt Wiley

For many, one of the most fascinating Olympic sports to watch is gymnastics. The amount of strength and agility needed to perform many of the routines is immense. However, one New Tampa 10-year-old has proven to be a natural in the sport, so much so that he already has qualified to train and compete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. “I’m really looking forward to the trip to Colorado Springs,” says Arden Spiro, of Cory Lake Isles. “It’s going to be really cool. This will give me a good idea of what competition will be like moving forward.” On November 13, Spiro will compete in the U.S.A. Gymnastics National Future Stars Championship. The Future Stars program is the pre-Olympic track for young gymnasts. Arden will represent the Southeast region, an honor earned with his fourth-place performance (out of eight competitors) at the Southeast Region 8 championship in Gainesville on October 4. During the competition, Arden competed against the Southeast Region’s best gymnasts in his age division in floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar and trampoline, as well as in strength and flexibility evaluations. Arden will compete in all of the same events against the best 10-year-olds in the nation in Colorado Springs and, he says, the competition will be fierce. “If your toe is curled while you’re

flying through the air, you can lose points (from the judges),” he explains. “It’s pretty intense.” Arden (photo) adds that he thinks that his high bar and strength routine will help him score highly. Only the top 16 gymnasts in his division will be named to the U.S. Gymnastics National Development Team and only the top eight finalists will be invited to participate in a special Development Team camp, during which they’ll get to train with several Olympic gymnasts, including 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Danell Leyva. Arden says he hopes to wear an Olympic medal, as well, although his gymnastics journey actually began at age three. “One day, we were at the beach and Arden was playing with a bucket in the sand,” his father Cyril explains. “He flipped it upside down, put his hands on top of it and pushed himself into a handstand, all on his own. We obviously could tell he had a natural knack for balance and muscle coordination.” They enrolled him in gymnastics to see if he took to it. And, he did. “Yes, when I was younger, I used to jump around a lot,” Arden explains. “I was very active.” These days, Arden spends 24 hours a week (four hours per day, six days a week) training at La Fleur’s Gymnastic Club in Tampa. Until last year, he attended Hunter’s Green Elementary, but late hours and a lack of free time prompted Arden and his parents to give home-schooling a try.

“By high school, I definitely want to be back in school,” he says. Arden has hopes of attending and competing in college gymnastics at Stanford University in Stanford, CA, after which he hopes to make his dream of competing in the Olympics come true. However, it all starts with the upcoming competition in Colorado Springs. To help cover Arden’s direct travel expenses (not including food or family travel), his parents set up a GoFundMe account. And, thanks to the help of generous donations from the New Tampa community, Arden reached his goal of raising $1,535 in just 22 days!
