District Reworking Middle & High School Attendance Boundaries By Michael Smith Faced with a huge budget deficit and the requirements of the votermandated class size amendment, the Pasco County School District is in the process of redrawing the attendance boundaries for middle and high schools in the eastern part of the county to relieve overcrowding. In October, District officials appointed a boundary committee made up of school administrators, parents and School District staff members to look at the attendance boundaries for several of the schools in our area, including Dr. John Long and Thomas E. Weightman middle schools and Wesley Chapel (WCH) and Wiregrass Ranch (WRH) high schools, in addition to others in the Dade City and Zephyrhills areas. After meeting several times in October and early November, the committee has come up with a proposed plan that will redistribute the

students who attend those schools, beginning in the 2011-12 school year, although that plan does still have to be officially approved by the members of the Pasco County School Board, who will vote on it in early 2011. Before that happens, parents of the students who will be affected also will have the opportunity to weigh in with their opinion about the proposed boundary changes. According to District planning director Chris Williams, the boundary changes are needed because both of the middle schools in the Wesley Chapel area are overcrowded, as is WRH, while some of the schools in the surrounding areas are actually under capacity. According to enrollment figures, Long is currently at 135 percent of capacity, with 1,787 students in a school that was designed for 1,327, and Weightman is currently at 112 percent of capacity, with 1,087 students and a capacity of 974. Similarly,

Centennial Middle School in Dade City also is over capacity, with 673 students at a school that was designed for 615 students, but both Raymond B. Stewart Middle School in Zephyrhills and Pasco Middle School in Dade City are under capacity, at 88 and 78 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, WRH has almost 500 more students than it was designed for, with 2,130 students at a school that was designed for 1,675, or 127 percent of its capacity, but both WCH and Pasco High are operating at only about 90 percent of capacity. So, under the changes that have been proposed by Middle and high school students who live in the area the boundary committee, marked with orange & blue stripes will be moved out some of the students who of Long Middle School & Wiregrass Ranch High. In addition, the county would be divided up into “market zones,” and fees would be less in the zones where the county wants more development, i.e., the southern and western portions of the county, and higher in other areas, to discourage new development there.

In anticipation of changes to state law, Pasco County planners are studying a new fee system to pay for future transportation improvements that will place more of the burden of paying for those improvements upon property owners throughout the county rather than developers.

Despite Recent Setbacks, It’s A Great Time To Be A Sports Fan! An editorial by Gary Nager Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad local pro and college sports news to report, although there is still plenty for Bayarea sports fans to be excited and hopeful about. First of all, it’s now old news that our suddenly beloved Tampa Bay Rays were eliminated in the first round of the Major League Baseball playoffs by the World Series-bound Texas Rangers — and a very tiny window of opportunity for the Rays to win a World Series title may have closed...but we’ll see. But, even though I’ve become a true Rays fan, as a long-suffering (more than 40 years) San Francisco Giants fan, I was thrilled that my Jints not only made it back to the Big Show, but actually took home the team’s first-ever World Series title since moving to the west coast from the Polo Grounds in New York City in 1958. Until they stomped the previously high-flying Rangers four games to one in the 2010 Fall Classic, the Giants had only made it to the Series four times in my lifetime. and of course, this year, when they came out of nowhere to beat the favored defending world champs, the Philadelphia Phillies, to advance to baseball’s Big Dance. Of course, the MLB offseason may end up being a difficult time for the Rays, as they’re expected to lose both All-Star outfielder Carl Crawford and All-Star closer Rafael Soriano before the 2011 season begins, but I most definitely am proud to be both a Rays and a Giants fan. I also can’t do much crowing about the Tim Tebow-less Florida Gators, who are now no longer in the hunt for an SEC East Division title after the Gainesvillians were stomped 36-14 in The Swamp by their former coach Steve Spurrier and his South Carolina Gamecocks as I went to press with this issue. Even Florida State may be able to take my once-proud alma mater later this month...and the USF Bulls also are struggling in their first year under new coach Skip Holtz, despite a recent overtime win over Big East rival Louisville. On the other hand, the truly surprising Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be 6-3 and have a real chance to make the NFL playoffs as you receive this issue. I give second-year coach Raheem Morris a lot of credit for putting his still-veryyoung team in position to win week after week, even though his defensive line and linebackers don’t appear to be playoff-quality and an undrafted running back from the University of Oregon named LeGarrette Blount has taken the keys to the running offense away from a beat-up Caddy. If nothing else, the Bucs are pretty entertaining (although virtually no one

gets to see them play at home because all their games are blacked out by nonsellouts) when they’re not getting stomped by superior competition (Pittsburgh and New Orleans beat up the Bucs, who looked a whole lot better losing 27-21 to the division-leading Atlanta Falcons) and Morris may be pumping up his team just enough to get them to sneak into the postseason. Considering how big hockey is here in New Tampa, the team we should really be excited about is the Tampa Bay Lightning, who haven’t been this high-flying since the Stanley

Cup season of 2003-04, even though the injury bug has recently put them in a 1-4 tailspin following an NHL-best 72 start to the 2010-11 season. Led by young superstar Steven Stamkos and powerhouse veterans Vincent Lecavalier, Marty St. Louis and former Philly Flyer Simon Gagne, firstyear coach Guy Boucher’s team was still a respectable 8-6-2 at our press time, despite the fact both Gagne and Lecavalier were on the disabled list as of this writing and veteran goalie Dan Ellis had taken over from Mike Smith as the team’s top goalie.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Interstate 275 Closed Down After Semi Catches Fire Interstate 275 near the Hillsborough/Pasco county line was closed down for several hours last week, after a semi truck caught fire. According to a report issued by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), truck driver Andy Veras was heading north on the interstate near mile marker 57 when he noticed a small fire on the passenger side of his 2003 International car carrier, which was hauling three cars at the time. Veras pulled over to the shoulder and attempted to put out the fire with an onboard fire extinguisher, but when he could not get the flames under control, he called 911. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and put out the blaze, but the northbound lanes of the interstate were closed for more than three hours while the truck was removed. Veras was not injured in the incident, and it is not known what caused the fire.

News Briefs Zachewicz, who was arrested for the second time in October while behind the wheel of her sports utility vehicle. According to reports, Zachewicz, 26, Leah who teaches English at Zachewicz the high school in Wesley Chapel, was pulled over by a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office deputy for driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone near Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and SR 56. At the time, Zachewicz, who also is the coach of the school’s girls swim team, had three students in the vehicle with her, and she said she was taking them to practice. In addition to speeding, however, Zachewicz was also charged with driving without a license. Her license had been revoked following an incident in May in which she was charged with DUI after a deputy found her passed out inside her vehicle in the parking lot of Dr. John Long Middle School, also in the Wiregrass Ranch area, at 2:30 in the morning. A Pasco County School District spokesperson said that Zachewicz had

The damage was just a bit more extensive, however, when a student pilot lost control of his aircraft, which then skidded off of a runway at a small local airport, leaving the plane perched atop a pair of cars in an adjacent parking lot.

According to reports, 60-year-old Gregory Daryl Johnson of Tampa was trying to take off on his second-ever solo flight at the Tampa North Aero Park in Wesley Chapel on October 28 when he began having trouble. He tried to re-land the single-engine Cessna, but the plane left the runway and somehow ended up on top of a pair of cars that were parked at a medical equipment company whose office is next to the airport. Fortunately, Johnson was able to walk away from the crash, and no one on the ground was injured, either. At our press time, the Federal Aviation Administration was conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.— Michael Smith

Williams said the only exceptions are for students who will be seniors next year — tthose students will still be allowed to graduate from the

schools they currently attend. Detailed maps of the proposed changes are available on the Pasco County School District website, Pasco.k12.fl.us, and also will be posted at the schools that would be affected. Before the proposed changes are put into place, however, they will be discussed at the Pasco County School Board’s meetings on Tuesday, December 21, and Tuesday, January 18, and Williams says they will be put to a vote at the January School Board meeting.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that’s why the color pink could be seen everywhere, from NFL gridirons to Wesley Chapel Toyota, where owner David Williams showed his support for breast cancer treatment and research by donating $35,000 to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa. Williams said that the money represents a portion of the proceeds from each vehicle that was sold at the dealership over the past year. Since he has had family members who have been affected by cancer, Williams said he felt that it

was only natural to support the wonderful work being done at Moffitt. “We like to stay involved in the community, and we couldn’t have found a better partnership than with Moffitt,” Williams said. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation. The Pillers say they were thrilled with the attendance at the first ever “Diamonds & Denim Holiday Charity Gala for the Cause” held on November 3 (photo). New Identities Hair Studio Celebrates A Decade Of Beauty By Gary Nager Although I had never met New Identities Hair Studio owners Kelly and Marc Rockquemore before they opened their first salon ten years ago last month, I have to say that today, they are among the closest friends and business associates we have at Neighborhood News, and not just because their original salon is still located in the same Shoppes of Amberly plaza (a few miles south of Wesley Chapel) where our office has been for the same decade. Nor is it only because Marc and Kelly have been such wonderful customers — people who not only pay their bills, but who also believe in the power of this publication and who have consistently run ads with us since they opened — or the fact that they have continuously operated one of the most upscale salons in New Tampa (just a few miles south of Wesley Chapel), with some of the best-trained stylists and color specialists in the beauty biz. All of that is true, but the other reason I appreciate the Rockquemores so much is because of how much they give back to not only the New Tampa community, but to the entire Tampa Bay area as well. Locally, the Rockquemores have been one of the strongest,

most consistent supporters of the annual Taste of New Tampa, but the management and staff of both New Identities locations (the other is in the “South Shore” Riverview/Apollo Beach area) also continue to give back by supporting a variety of local charities, with multiple charitable events being held at both of the Rockquemores’ salons. In order to not only weather the storm but thrive in the face of the recent U.S. and local economies, you have to be doing something right — and Marc and Kelly surely seem to have a winning formula for their salons, which now total nearly 50 employees, more than 20 of which are stylists, many of whom (like shareholder Cindy Walters, photo) have been with the company for five, six or more years. “New stylists at our salons go through a ten-month training program, where they shadow our top stylists,” Marc says. “They still get to cut hair while they’re training (and their clients can get significant savings for utilizing stylists-in-training), but they also are learning the latest styling and coloring techniques from some of the besttrained stylists and colorists in the business. Charitable Ef for ts Whether it’s cutting and donating dozens of pony tails for the “Locks of Love” charity, supporting breast cancer awareness causes or providing free hair cutting and makeover services for local women who have been the victims of domestic violence, New Identities has been a consistent supporter of charitable causes in the Tampa Bay area. The most recent event, although it was held at New Identities’ South Shore location, was the salon’s first annual Breast Cancer Awareness Expo, which featured many local organizations and more than 200 attendees who helped raise more than $2,500 to sup-

port breast cancer-related charities for October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Most of our clients are still women,” says Marc, “so we like being able to support the organizations who help fight the most prevalent form of cancer affecting women.” Both New Identities salons also have provided Valentine’s Day makeovers for women who live in Bayarea domestic violence shelters, such as The Spring, Alpha House and Mary & Martha House. “Women who have been victims of domestic violence often have self-esteem issues,” Marc says. “Our employees get such a great feeling from helping those women feel a little better at least one day each year.” And, as we’ve reported in previous issues, New identities also has been a supporter of the nonprofit “Locks of Love” charity, which provides human hair pieces for young cancer patients. Between the two studios, New Identities donated 125 ponytails of at least 10 inches in length each last year. Wesley Chapel Elementary Celebrates Kids Care Week Earlier this month, the Wesley Chapel Elementary (WCE) Safety Patrol Kids Care Club showed how much they care for animals by collecting $700, along with food and other supplies, for The Labor of Love Animal Rescue in Valrico. The patrols ran several stations at the school’s Annual Fall Festival, including face painting, bowling, cupcake sales and adopt-a-stuffed-animal. Students also brought in bags and cans of pet food that were donated to the rescue group. The activitities were funded in part by a $250 grant from Hasbro’s Children’s Fund - Generation On/ Kids Care Clubs to WCE Safety Patrol coordinator and physical education specialist Chris Gorman. The grant was one of only 100 mini-grants that were awarded to celebrate Kids Care Week 2010. Gorman says that Kids Care Week recognizes the power of kids to help others in their community and the world through a specific service project. The theme of this year’s week was “make your mark on the world: go the extra mile.”

WCE student Mira Derrick donates a bag of cat chow to the cause. “The Patrols serve as role models for younger children who look up to them,” Gorman says. “This was a great opportunity for our students to give back to the community and help a very worthwhile cause.” The Labor of Love Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer organization working to rescue stray cats and dogs and find them forever homes. SPE Fall Festival Fun The Sand Pine Elementary PTA held its 4th annual Fall Festival on Friday, October 22. The beautiful weather made for a fantastic evening of family fun, as students and their families tested their skill at fall-themed games such as the Mummy Wrap, Apple Bob, Spider Darts, and Candy Corn Toss. In addition to great music provided by DJ Jay Sheridan, there were hayrides, pumpkin pie-eating contests, and plenty of treats for all to enjoy. Other activities included amazing caricatures by Dave Smith and Rob Little as well as artistic face painting by Wyndy Olsen. Students took their best shot as some favorite teachers and SPE principal Todd Cluff braved the dunk tank. The festival also included a pumpkin decorating contest, with a Toys R Us gift card awarded to Tyler Townsan for “crowd favorite.” This event was a huge success, thanks to all of the volunteers who donated their time and energy! WCH Student-Athletes Celebrate National Signing Day

WCH’s Hill 2nd At State Class 2A Meet In Diving Although Wesley Chapel High (WCH) senior Alex Hill only began diving in September, he missed becoming his school’s first state diving champion by only 1.55 points at the Florida Class 2A Swimming & Diving Championships, which were still being held at the Central Florida Aquatic Center in Orlando as we went to press. Hill, who was seeded 12th following his second place showing at the Region 2A-2 meet hosted by Harmony High in St. Cloud, wasn’t the only local competitor at the State championships, but he may have raised the most eyebrows because of his lack of previous experience. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to attend the State meet, so we weren’t able to interview Hill or his coach at WCH, Jim Cracchiolo, before we went to press with this issue. The only local swimmer to make it to the State 2A meet was Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) senior Rebecca Pindral, who finished fourth in Florida Class 2A in the girls 100-yard breaststroke (in 1:06.41). Pindral, who was second in the same event at the Region 2A-2 Championships, also finished 17th in the trials for the 200yard Individual Medley (in 2:14.56) at the State 2A meet, missing qualifying

for the Consolation Finals by 9/10 of a second. Other top local swimmers at the Regional meet were WRH’s Matthew Menendez, who finished 9th in both the boys 200-yard freestyle (in 1:53.83) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.21). Right behind Menendez, in 10th in the 100 fly, was WRH’s Alexey Kovalev (59.39). Also placing in two events at the Region 2A-2 meet was WRH’s Zachary Serota, who was 10th in the boys 500-yard freestyle (5:22.74) and 13th in the 200 IM (2:17.60). WRH’s Brendan Leroche was 11th in the boys 100-yard backstroke (1:01.91). On the girls side, in addtion to Pindral (who was second in the 100 breast and 4th in the 200 IM) at the Regionals, other top performers for WRH were Chelsea Hernandez (9th in the 100 free, 1:00.04), Fern Powell (11th in the 100 fly, 1:07.34) and Makayla Strickland (12th in the 100 back, 1:09.25; and 15th in the 50 free, 27.87). The WRH girls finished 10th of 24 teams at the Regionals, while the WRH boys were 12th of 29 teams. Hill’s strong showing led the WCH boys to a 24th-place finish at the Regional meet. — GN

Local ‘Karate Kid’ Tyler Luginski Ear ns Two Gold Medals Our hats are off to Wesley Chapel resident Tyler Luginski, who won a pair of gold medals for his outstanding work at the 5th Annual Karate-Do Legends Tournament, which was held on October 16, in Miami. According to his parents, Tyler, 10, is an unshakable competitor. The Veteran’s Elementary fifth-grade honors student has been competing in

regional and national karate tournaments for more than four years. Competing in the 10/11-year-old, black-belt advanced division at the Legends Tournament, he won gold medals in both kata (forms) and in sparring, despite fierce competition from his opponents. The Association accepted 37 vehicles and tools of yesteryear. In addition to the permanent structures, the museum grounds display tools of the Florida pioneer man, showing how he built his house, made furniture, plowed the fields, harvested crops and performed jobs in leather-working and blacksmithing. Susan Bayes, who lives in Dade City, has worked at the Museum for five years. “It is an absolutely wonderful place,” she says. “It is a private museum — we do not get funds from the state or county — so, it is a labor of love for the trustees and museum volunteers who work here. There are demonstrations of butter churning, sugar caning and crafting on a regular basis. A lot of people who visit here say they remember seeing some of the things we have here on their grandparents’ farms.” The Pioneer Florida Museum Gift Shop is open Tuesday-Saturday during regular museum hours. America’s Ballet School: Where Young Stars Are Born By Michael Smith As a teenage ballet dancer, Paula Nunez traveled the world, performing on stages from her native Venezuela to New York, Paris and beyond, so she knows about the dedication and hard work that it takes to reach that level of success, and that’s what she tries to impart to her students at America’s Ballet School (ABS) in Tampa Palms. Nunez originally opened the school in a small space in the Shoppes of Amberly plaza in 2002 and moved into a new, larger, studio in the same plaza two years ago, as word of the school began to spread and more and more students wanted to learn how to ply their craft there. America’s Ballet School offers instruction in classical ballet for students from three years old to adults, but it is the school’s pre-professional program, for high school students and young adults, that has earned it a reputation as one of the best dance schools in the entire country. That has been demonstrated by the fact that ABS has won the title of “Outstand-

ing School” in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), which is the world’s largest student ballet competition, for the past four years in a row. In fact, in October, the 2010 YAGP Regional Semifinal competition was held in Tampa for the first time ever, partly in recognition of the achievements of Nunez and ABS. In addition to the overall school award, several of Nunez’ students have won individual awards at the YAGP as well. In this year’s competition, for example, 13 ABS students placed among the Top 12 in their respective categories, and two, Cameron Suder and Brandon Carpio, placed in the Top 3, which means that they automatically received an invitation to perform at the YAGP finals, which will be held in New York City next spring. Brandon’s older sister Stephanie also received a special invitation to the finals after placing in the Top 12 in two different categories, as did five of the different ABS duos and ensemble groups who performed at the Regional Semifinal competition. Besides giving the dancers an opportunity to compete in the finals,

That’s because not only are $250,000 in scholarships awarded to the top participants each year, but the competitions also are closely watched by professional scouts and representatives of some of the most prestigious schools and dance companies in the world. Last year, after placing first in his division at the YAGP semis, Brandon Carpio was invited to

audition for the leading role in the Broadway production of “Billy Elliott: The Musical,” and another ABS student, Olivia Kabat, received an invitation to attend the exclusive Ellison Ballet School in NYC after placing third in her division. Nunez says that the biggest reason for the success of her students is that the ABS program places such a heavy emphasis on the basics of classical ballet.

Aesthetic Skin Studio’s Treatments Can Transform Your Skin By Melissa O’Brien While the warm, sunny Florida climate is a great place to live, the toll that the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays have on the face and our skin can be extreme and even dangerous. Some people who live in sun-intense locations can show early signs of “photoaging” — dark spots, wrinkles and even skin cancers — as early as in their 20s. While you cannot stop or even slow down the chronological aging process, there are many innovative facial treatments available at the Aesthetic Skin Studio on S.R. 54 in Lutz (minutes from most of Wesley Chapel) to slow down and prevent premature aging. “Your skin functions similarly to your body in general,” says Aesthetic Skin Studio owner Zenith Nanavati. “It requires food and nutrition, in the form of skin care, and exercise, in the form of facial treatments. With my dual license as a laser practitioner and medical aesthetician (qualified to work with patients whose skin has suffered trauma or medical procedures), I have the ability to assess each individual’s skin type and customize each treatment I offer based upon your needs and concerns.” According to Zenith, there are two types of aging. “There is chronological aging, also known as the natural aging process, and photoaging, which is what occurs with repeated sun exposure,” she says. “Chronological aging is a continuous process that normally begins in our mid-20s. Within the skin, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a bit less spring as we age. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and turnover of new skin cells may decrease slightly. While these changes usually begin in our 20s, the signs of the natural aging process are typically not visible for decades.” She also explains that photoaging occurs over a period of years. “With repeated exposure to the sun, the skin loses the ability to repair itself, and the damage accumulates,” says Zenith. “Scientific studies have shown that repeated UV exposure breaks down collagen and impairs the synthesis of new collagen. The sun also attacks our elastin and weakened skin ceases to spring back much earlier than skin that has been protected from UV rays. Skin also becomes loose, wrinkled and leathery much earlier with unprotected exposure to sunlight.” Zenith says that she can address these skin-aging issues in her skin studio and that her treatments are a unique experience, so clients need to block off at least two hours for each facial appointment. “We are not your typical skin studio providing your typi-

cal facial,” says Zenith. “We are actually treating the skin, rather than just providing a feel-good facial. I use techniques such as organic Microdermabrasion, light- emitting diodes, oxygen infusion, lymphatic drainage and microcurrent (which has been called a non-surgical facelift). These techniques can repair and prevent skin damage from environmental exposure and improve the texture and elasticity and maintain the integrity of the skin with transdermal (fast-acting, penetrating) product lines.” Because of the length of the treatments she provides, Nanavati only sees three customers a day in her small, but inviting and beautifully decorated studio. “I have a one-room operation because I invested in my equipment and the products that I use,” she says. “Most spas invest a lot in the look and feel of their place, but I wanted to make sure my clients always have topof-the-line treatments and products available to them.” Aesthetic Skin Studio can treat customers of all ages — both male and female. Red Robin (Yum!) — Not Your Typical Burger Joint! By Gary Nager I have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect before I tried the new Red Robin (Yum!) at the Shops at Wiregrass mall, but I was still excited to check out the burger place with the endless fries and the catchy commercials. Red Robin may have the cartoon character (see photo) and look of a fastfood joint, but it actually is something else entirely — it’s an actual restaurant with a full-liquor bar and entrées, sandwiches, soups and salads you won’t find at McDonald’s or Burger King. I do think Red Robin is just a little bit pricey for what it is (averaging about $10 per person), but I will say that there are a lot of tasty options on its larger-than-expected menu. The burgers are large and can be loaded up with just about any topping you can imagine, from the usual choices like cheese and chili, to more exotic tastes, like the “Burnin’ Love” burger with jalapeno rings, cayenne pepper and pepper Jack cheese, and the “Whiskey River” BBQ burger with BBQ sauce, onion rings and cheddar cheese — and many more. But, Red Robin also has everything from Garden and Boca veggie burgers to turkey burgers, fish and

chips, grilled and fried chicken and even fish sandwiches, as well as salads, wrap sandwiches and a pretty decent prime rib sandwich au jus. There’s even a Mexican-style Ensenada grilled chicken entrée, Red’s Rice Bowl with teriyaki chicken and fresh veggies and a “classic” Creamy Mac n’ Cheese. And yes, the bottomless steak fries are crisp, hot and, well, yum! Red Robin also features bottomless Coca-Cola products, a variety of tasty flavored iced teas and lemonades, multiple import and domestic beers on taps and in bottles, a selection of wines and even premium liquors. And, although we didn’t get to sample any of the desserts during the preview preopening, the variety of cupcakes also looked pretty tasty. And there’s no doubt the place is bright and cheery and the service is excellent. I’m certain it’ll be packed for lunch and dinner on an ongoing basis.
