Obama & Many Locals Reelected; Penny For Pasco Renewed To 2024! By Matt Wiley After months of campaigning and billions of dollars spent on political advertising, the nation’s votes are in and, of course, U.S. President Barack Obama has won reelection. The races for positions in local Pasco County government also have been decided. Despite early rain showers and a large volume of early voting and absentee ballot participation, long lines still formed at voting precincts across the Wesley Chapel area early on November 6 for the 2012 general election, which helped decide not only who would become the next U.S. President, but also who would represent the Wesley Chapel area in the U.S. Congress, and several local government positions. “At 7 a.m., the line was out the door,” said James R. Estel, polling deputy at Precinct 101, located at the Meadow Pointe II Clubhouse on County Line Rd. “It was really busy early in the morning and stayed steady during the day, although there wasn’t really a line. People are happy when you tell them they are the line.” Estel says he has worked as a

Although President Obama may have narrowly won the State of Florida by a margin of only about 50,000 votes (although those results were still not “official” at our press time), former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won Pasco County with more than 52 percent of the vote to the President’s 45 percent. Joining President Obama in Washington D.C. will be C.W. “Bill” Nelson (D-Orlando) — who won reelection in the U.S. Senate over Republican opponent Connie Mack IV, with 52 percent of the county’s vote and 55 percent overall — and Gus Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor), who also won reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives with 62 percent of the vote in Pasco and 63.5 percent of the state vote over Democratic opponent Jonathon Snow. In the local races, Republican Paula O’Neil secured another term as Pasco’s Clerk of the Circuit Court with an overwhelming 75 percent of the vote over non-partisan opponent Roberta Cutting. In exchange, the Porter family agreed to donate 46 acres of land in Wiregrass Ranch, build the facility, as well as operate it. Since that original proposal, however, negotiations regarding operations and revenue brought the project to a standstill. The Porters no longer wished to build or operate the facility, but would still donate the land, as well as 100,000 cubic yards of “fill dirt” for the project, as long as the County would take over construction and operation costs, and include “Wiregrass” in the name of the complex. Despite some disagreement during the meeting, the Board approved the

Editorial — Why I Don’t Appreciate The Post-Election Rhetoric by Gary Nager Anyone who read our last issue knows that I was leaning towards endorsing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for U.S. President in this year’s election, based on his solid performance in the first debate against President Obama. I also noted that because there were still two Presidential debates remaining when I went to press with that issue, I wasn’t going to be making an official endorsement until after all three set-tos. So, even though I thought the President did a much better job in rounds two and three than he had in the first debate, in our November 3 New Tampa issue, I still endorsed — and then voted for — Gov. Romney. In other words, my candidate lost. It was an amazingly close dogfight, where both men basically got almost 50 percent of the vote nationwide but, as everyone in this country knows, Pres. Obama earned four more years with the voters by virtue of winning both the popular vote (by about 1% of 110,000,000 votes) and the Electoral College, even though Florida still hadn’t been called at our press time. Like most of you, I was definitely over the months of negative campaigning on both sides as one of the closest elections in history unfolded. Yes, the candidate I endorsed lost, but I also had endorsed Obama in 2008 and — as I also retold last issue — I felt my business has done a little better the last Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News 15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa, FL 33647 Phone: (813) 910-2575 Fax: 910-2483 Website: WCNeighborhoodNews.com Adv. couple of years (this year in particular) and that since I could see signs of an economic uptick here in my little corner of the Tampa Bay area, I would be OK no matter who became president this time, despite having philosophical differences with both candidates. For example, while I would like to agree that everyone in this country should have health care, I don’t feel a compulsive need, as a small business owner, to have to pay for everyone else to have it. Likewise, while I can understand why Gov. Romney is personally opposed to abortion, I still feel that Planned Parenthood provides many other services and that the people who genuinely need those services don’t deserve to have the rug pulled out from under them. But, I have to tell you that the rhetoric that hit places like Twitter and Facebook moments after Obama was declared the winner of the election have made me much more concerned about the future of our country than anything this President may do over the next four years. First of all, how many of the millions of people who have posted antiObama Facebook messages — calling him everything from a Muslim to antiIsrael and from Chairman Mao to Adolf Hitler — didn’t even go to the polls to cast a ballot? Even if they did vote, how many of them went knocking on doors in their neighborhood to remind their neighbors that a) they shouldn’t forget to vote and b) who they should vote for? And, wouldn’t Romney have had a better chance of winning had he picked Marco Rubio or Condoleezza Rice as his running mate, rather than a guy who seems to be little more than a younger version of himself? Couldn’t he, as a man trying to get elected, say he would pull the estimated portion of Planned Parenthood’s

funding that goes to funding abortions, instead of for the entire program? I understand why people believe that Pres. Obama’s goal is to take wealth away from the wealthy and make everyone “the same” with some of his policies, but Hitler was a fascist dictator, not a communist and yet, despite the fact that Hitler exterminated more than 8 million people, 6 million of them Jews, there were some of my own Facebook friends posting that our President will prove to be worse than Hitler over the next four years. Really? Even if, somehow, this country does fall into a depression, which I

doubt will happen, I still believe that these United States have always been and always will be in the hands of more than just one well-educated man. President Obama didn’t win a “mandate” from the American people. He’s lucky to still be in office at all. So, instead of spewing hateful venom at the man and his party, I believe it’s time for those of us who believe in things like a balanced budget, a strong military and the once-proud American work ethic to echo Gov. Romney’s concession speech and finally agree to reach across the aisle to try to find actual solutions to our problems. And I believe we will.

Boyette Reservior Will Provide Reclaimed Water During Dry Season By Matt Wiley It carries an unmistakable scent and requires the posting of signs that advise pedestrians in most of the places that it is used. Reclaimed water isn’t the softest of water, and it most definitely is not cleanest, but it does a particular job very well. And soon, it will fill the proposed Boyette Reclaimed Water Storage Reservoir (BRWSR), located in the northern portion of Wesley Chapel. Approved by the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners and currently seeking contractors, the $30million BRWSR will be constructed on a 140-acre parcel of land one mile northeast of the Wesley Center Wastewater Treatment Facility at the northeast corner of the intersection of Boyette and Overpass Rds. With an average depth of 12.5 feet, the reservoir is planned to hold 500 million gallons of reclaimed water to be used for irrigation by more than 5,500 residential customers of the Southwest Florida Water Management District (aka Swiftmud), and will be especially crucial during the dry weather season, usually between November and April. The project is to be funded through a 50/50 partnership between Pasco County utility ratepayers and Swiftmud. “Pasco County is responsible for

existing handling the reclaimed water for its utility customers,” explains District 1 county commissioner Ted Schrader. “We need to be able to store (reclaimed water) during the wet season so that it is available to customers during the drier months.” He says that the county is in the process of finishing the construction of pipelines that would connect the reservoir to customers as far north as S.R. 52. “We estimate that we’re about four to five months from breaking ground on the project,” says assistant county administrator Bruce Kennedy, P.E. “The closing date for submittal of the contractors’ statements of qualification was October 30, but that deadline was

years, due to a delay in obtaining an Environment Resource Permit (ERP) from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), which, according to Swfwmd.state.fl.us, is required by the state before construction can begin that would affect wetlands, alter surface water flows or potentially contribute to water pollution. The county secured an ERP from the FDEP in July of 2010, but was again delayed in October of the same year, when the county terminated its contract with King Engineering, which had originally designed the BRWSR project.

extended to November 6.” Kennedy explains that the contractors that were pre-qualified during that period will be submitting bids for the construction contract around the first week of February, at the earliest, which will be followed by an estimated 18 months of construction, but could vary if any obstacles arise. “We’re in the process of pre-qualifying engineers,” Kennedy says. “After that, we narrow it down to one company to construct the project.” The Boyette project dates back to October of 2006, when an agreement between the county and Swiftmud was first signed to dig the reservoir. The project has been in limbo for several

W ESLEY C HAPEL Seven Oaks May Chop Thousands Of Oaks

Seven Oaks may soon become “zero oaks” if the community decides to cut down the 2,000 oak trees that currently line the sidewalks and streets in the Wesley Chapel community. In a November 5 press release from the Seven Oaks Community Development District (CDD), the CDD Board of Supervisors notified residents of the problem trees are causing. “The issue at hand is the damage the live oak tree roots are causing to abutting sidewalks, driveways, utilities and roadway curbing,” the release says. “(Arborists, the Pasco County Extension Office and other experts) have reached out to Pasco County government to discuss the possible tree removal and replacement program to determine whether the live oaks should be removed and a different species should be planted in these confined locations, or whether replacement trees should be planted in other common areas throughout the community.” Scott Brizendine, district manager of the Seven Oaks CDD, says that the cheapest quote the community has gotten has been $90 for the removal of each tree, stump grinding and installation of soil and sod where each tree once stood. He adds that the replacement cost per tree has not yet been determined, and

News Briefs will depend on what type of tree is chosen to replace the current live oaks. The Board says it is continuing to discuss the issue and held two public workshops for resident feedback on Nov. 10. However, no further information was available at our press time.

Teens Busted Following 100-MPH Joyride

Stealing a car and pushing its limits can be an appealing idea to some video gamers, but such ideas are better left to the imagination, as three Wesley Chapel teens have discovered. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), three Wesley Chapel minors — two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old — stole a car from a residence on Foxwood Blvd. in Meadow Pointe around 11 p.m. on October 27. The report says the teens were walking down the street and saw that the Suzuki still had the keys in the ignition. PCSO says the owner of the unattended car was getting ready to move it, but was inside his home when the teens discovered the unattended vehicle and drove away. He attempted to chase them down, with no success. The report also says that PCSO deputies caught the trio at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and County Line Rd. after accelerating the vehicle at speeds

John Shea, of Wesley Chapel. PCSO deputies arrested the two men in connection to a Chevrolet Lumina that was discovered burned in a wooded area of Hillsborough County. The vehicle was reported stolen from Meadow Pointe on Sept. 24. Butler and Shea were each originally released on a $5,000 bond. The third suspect, however — 21-year-old Taylor Hodge of Brooksville, was still being held at our press time at the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center on a $22,450 bond for attempted auto burglary, grand theft auto, being a felon in possession of ammunition, resisting arrest without violence, possession of marijuana and illegal possession of a controlled substance. — Matt Wiley

estimated at up to 100 miles per hour. The teens have been released from the Land O’ Lakes Juvenile Assessment Center after being arrested and charged with grand theft auto.

Charges Dropped In Grand Theft Auto Case

Charges have been dropped against two men who, along with a third suspect, were accused of stealing a car in Wesley Chapel before setting it aflame and abandoning it in a wooded area in Hillsborough County. According to the Pasco County Clerk of Circuit Court website, grand theft auto charges have been dropped against 20-year-old Blake Butler, of Zephyrhills, and 20-year-old Stephen

A Better You Counseling Can Help Get Your Life Back On Track By Camille Gillies No matter how ideal someone’s life may appear, everyone goes through periods of stress and trauma, for which they may need someone else’s help. Luckily, experienced mental health counseling is only a phone call away and could set you on the path to a happier life and a better you! When you’re faced with such times, Amanda Fink, a clinical therapist located in Wesley Chapel, wants you to know she’s here to help. “It’s okay to seek help to learn how to deal with (emotionally) difficult events,” says Fink, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) who owns A Better You Counseling Center, located in the Cypress Glen Professional Park, off S.R. 56 near I-75. A Better You Counseling Center treats both adults and children and asks its clients to abide by only two rules: First, always tell the truth and be forthcoming, and second, show respect. Fink and her team address a broad spectrum of issues, including strained or broken relationships with a parent, child or spouse; anxiety over school, sports or job; and feelings of loss and grief brought on by an unfaithful spouse/lover or the loss of a loved one. Counseling worked wonders for

12

one Wesley Chapel mother, who shared her personal story. “Raising an angry teenager is not easy and I needed help. It was destroying my marriage and I felt helpless. Our doctor recommended A Better You Counseling Center. My 14-year-old son was hesitant (that’s putting it nicely) to attend, but soon he was reminding me when his appointments were. Counseling has helped him find purpose, be more respectful and an all-around happier kid. Now, I look forward to family time again.” In cases of conflict resolution, Fink says she sees many conflicts between adult children and their aging parents, in which the adult child often may be holding onto an issue from childhood. In those cases, Fisk says she speaks to both parties and prefers to counsel them together, observing nonverbal cues to gain additional insight into the dynamics of the relationship. If one of the parties lives out of the area, Fink will conduct sessions on the speakerphone. In fact, she generally is agreeable to holding counseling sessions over the telephone or even conducting “e-therapy” via the computer, for those who are comfortable with the idea. She says those methods are convenient for people who travel a great deal or live out of state. She also helps people overcome

feelings associated with grief, feelings that may have been suppressed for many years. “I see 40-year-old women who had abortions early in their lives and went on to get married and raise families,” she explains. “But, because they may never have grieved the loss of the (aborted) child, they are just now dealing with that grief.” She adds that grief doesn’t always involve someone’s passing. “It also can be about the death of a relationship. Many spouses have a hard time coping with their partners leaving them for someone else.” Feelings of grief manifest themAmanda Fink is the Licensed Mental selves in various ways. counseling needs to be on medication,” she states. “But, if I see a need for a client to see a specialist and be considered for medication, I refer out to some excellent psychiatrists and psychologists.” She says that the doctors she recommends share a philosophy of care similar to her own. Fink is an advocate of cognitive behavioral therapy, which encourages people to view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them more effectively. In other words, you can change patterns of behavior by changing the way you think. “I believe in trying to give people the skills they need to deal with their problems,” Fink explains. “It’s like coaching someone through certain areas of their life.” For example, she currently counsels many young college graduates who have moved back home to live with their parents because they can’t find jobs. These young adults worry about what they are going to do with their lives and Fink can help them. It’s also common for her to counsel young children who fret about competing in sports and stress out about letting their team down. The sport they once loved ceases to be a source of fun because it creates so much anxiety for them. They may withdraw or become irritable and more prone to fighting. “We have a great community, but

because we have so many family activities available in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, there is no down time (for many families),” Fink says. “Parents are usually well-intentioned, but they are actually just giving their kids everything they (the parents) wanted when they were children.” She says these parents end up doing a disservice to their children because the kids sometimes are too busy to just enjoy being a kid. Fink and her husband, Ben, who live in Hunter’s Green in New Tampa, allow their children, daughter Sydney, 9, and son Benjamin, 5, to partake in two activities a week. “If they had their way, they’d have something every night,” Fink states, noting that she encourages them to explore a variety of sports and other activities so they can determine their individual likes and dislikes.

lems through play therapy, sometimes using a live pet rat named Sweet Pea. “Autistic children often have a problem with touch, especially people touching them, but they’ll let Sweet Pea walk up and down their arm. It gives them a sense of empathy for another living creature,” Fink explains. Fink, who has been licensed since 2003 and holds a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Anderson College, Anderson, IN, and a Master’s degree in counseling from Webster University in Ocala (satellite campus), says she maintains strict standards in dealing with the laws and ethics of the field, emphasizing to her staff that everything they do must be in the client’s best interest. If

they feel they are unable to provide the best treatment, they refer clients to other therapists. Fink notes that the word “therapy” shouldn’t scare you into thinking you can’t afford it. For an hour of confidential counseling, Fink charges a flat rate of $75, an amount many folks spend on a dinner out. Fink says it comes down to priorities: “It’s not hard to spend $10 on a trip through the McDonald’s drive-through. Do that several times a week, and it starts to add up. It’s a matter of prioritizing what’s important in your life.” For an appointment or additional information, call 817-5468 or visit ABetterYouCounseling.com.

Mar-Go Interiors Can Get Your Home Ready For The Holidays! By Gary Nager Like most men, I know precious little about decorating, other than if you gave me an unlimited amount of money, I could definitely fill a house with stuff I like...most women might cringe at some of that stuff, but still. Considering that most of us don’t have an unlimited amount of money to spend these days, we still want our homes to look their best when friends and family come visiting for the holidays — or any day, really. So, who can you turn to for everything from custom window treatments to entire kitchen and bath remodeling jobs? Owner and long-time New Tampa resident Judy Dechant of Mar-Go Interiors (located in the Medallion Corporate Park off S.R. 56, behind the Goodwill Donation Center), says she can help add value to your home. “A lot of our customers are empty nesters who just want to give their home a new look,” Judy says. “Even a lot of our neighbors in New Tampa and here in Wesley Chapel are in that position. They’re staying in their homes and just want to do what they can, on a certain budget, to freshen things up.” Judy’s husband Tom, who handles the bookkeeping for the store, says his wife keeps up on current decorating trends, but he believes her greatest talent in business is helping people. “Some of the clients who come in

14

here come in looking so lost and not knowing where and how to start...and how to sift through everything available to find what they want.” Judy adds, “A lot of our customers will have looked through magazines like Architectural Digest and Florida Living before coming in here, but they have no idea how to find the right window treatments, fabrics and things they need.” She adds, however, that Mar-Go is always getting in new samples all the time. “The fabric companies send us new collections every season,” Judy says. “And there really are new products hitting the market all the time.” Although Judy works with a licensed general contractor, so she can actually do an entire home remodel, including kitchens (including cabinetry and countertops), baths, floors, walls, etc., she says her “specialty” is still creating custom window treatments. “Yes, our forte is everything from blinds, shades and shutters to drapes, valences, cornices and sheer fabrics (instead of full drapes) and we carry all the top brands although Hunter Douglas is still the one most people ask for and the brand we sell the most of, too. We also do a lot of energy-efficient shutters and shades to keep out the Florida heat and occasional cold.” Mar-Go decorators also can reupholster and paint your furniture, transform the older European style furniture and window treatments to the more Modern

look that Judy says is a new trend, “even though modern doesn’t always mean ‘contemporary’ these days.” “Decorating trends change about every ten years,” she says, “and we always keep up with those trends. We can create that ‘vintage shabby chic’ look with Candice Olson and other name brand fabrics for your home and even create entire new environments for offices. We’ve been expanding our commercial work for doctor and dentist offices recently.”

A Little History You may be wondering why Judy and Tom own a store called Mar-Go Interiors, although many of Judy’s customers know that “the most established

design center in New Tampa & East Pasco” was started almost 15 years ago on S.R. 54, just east of Bruce B. Downs Blvd., by Maria Gorter (Maria Gorter). Judy joined Maria in 1999, worked with another design firm from 2004-09 and returned as the manager in 2009 when Maria moved Mar-Go Interiors to the new “furniture district” on S.R. 56, between Haverty’s and Ashley Furniture. In 2010, Judy and Tom purchased Mar-Go from Maria and earlier this year, they moved it to it’s current location just off S.R. 56. “We stopped stocking all of the household items Maria used to have,”

Judy says, “so we didn’t need a location right on a major street. We couldn’t compete on inventory with the big box accessory stores anyway and most of our business is still repeat customers, so we didn’t really need a high-visibility location.” Judy and Tom also depend upon word of mouth through attending Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) events (Tom even was on the WCCC Fall Festival committee this year) and advertising in local media like the one you’re reading now. Insignia Care For Women Has Offices In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel By Camille Gillies Health insurance may have become more of a headache over the years, but the care you can receive at your physician’s office is more advanced than ever. A prime example can be found at Insignia Care for Women, a medical group that has three offices — New Tampa, South Tampa and Wesley Chapel — and specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. The practice’s eight Board-certified physicians are now able to perform in-office surgeries, as well as offer laboratory services, ultrasound technology and weight loss counseling, all within their walls. Insignia’s main office, located at 3268 Cove Bend Dr., near the intersection of Bearss Ave. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. (behind Cracker Barrel), is the site of a new surgical wing that the practice launched last month. “We converted an area where we had been conducting research into separate pre-op, post-op and surgery rooms,” says Mandy Stevenson, Insignia’s clinical manager. “We are really pleased to be able to offer this convenience to our patients. Many women prefer to come to their doctor’s office to have a surgery performed rather than go to a hospital or outpa-

It’s a more familiar environment for them.” In the new surgical unit, Insignia's physicians perform procedures such as NovaSure Ablation, which treats heavy menstrual periods by using radio frequency energy to remove the lining of the uterus; Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), which uses a low voltage electrical current to remove abnormal tissues of the cervix; polypectomies or the removal of polyps; biopsies; dilation and curettage (D&C) to remove tissue in the uterus or to diagnose or treat abnormal uterine bleeding; and hysteroscopies, which diagnose and treat abnormal vaginal bleeding. Insignia’s obstetrical (OB) care also is geared toward patient convenience, with patients encouraged to make appointments at any of Insignia’s three offices. For example, someone who lives in Wesley Chapel but who works downtown may want to visit Insignia’s South

Tampa office, and they are welcome to do so. In fact, Stevenson, who also serves as the practice’s OB coordinator, advises patients to meet all eight of the doctors. On a rotating basis, three physicians are typically in the South Tampa and New Tampa offices while two see patients in Wesley Chapel. An OB coordinator might be a new concept to you, but Stevenson, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), is the first stop for any Insignia OB patient. She partners with the patients, reviewing their medical histories and subsequently providing information and guidance to help them throughout their pregnancies. She also is the person who can answer common inquiries and will refer specific medical questions and concerns to the doctors. Pregnancy and sonograms go hand in hand and, with three sonographers on staff, ultrasounds are performed in all three Insignia offices. In fact,

Insignia Care for Women was the first group in Tampa to be certified by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). “We recently were certified for the third time,” sonographer Carol Pickersgill states proudly. Pickersgill, who boasts 36 years of experience in the field, points out that the types of sonograms performed at Insignia range from saline to doplar to three- and four-dimensional. “Sonograms are important for seeing inside the uterus, for determining uterine anomalies, neoplasms or tumors, as well as for assisting with amniocentesis or seeing the placement or correct position of an intrauterine device (IUD),” explains Pickersgill, adding that it is more comfortable for most patients to have sonograms conducted in their own doctors’ offices and it’s also more immediate. “If the doctor suspects a problem, we can usually

work the patient in that same day.”

A Top-Flight Group

At the core of any doctor’s office are the doctors, and these physicians, six of whom trained at USF for their residencies, are all very like-minded in their respective approaches to medicine. “We share a consistency in medical opinion and do things in a similar manner,” says William Newton, M.D., who ran the gynecology program at the USF Medical School for two years and has been practicing in Tampa since 1985. “Because of our training, we are able to provide continuity of care. That’s beneficial when patients see multiple doctors in a practice.” Dr. Newton says the practice devotes half of its time to obstetrics and the other half to gynecology, adding: “We have extensive training and experience in gynecological problems and surgery. Several of us are associate professors at USF, where we occasionally provide resident training, and four (of Insignia’s doctors) are trained in robotic surgery.” The team also conducts clinical research on menopausal therapies, fibroid tumors and endometriosis. You may see the doctors lecturing at public events, such as the recent “Focus on Females” symposium at the Tampa Convention Center, or walking to support breast cancer awareness. In addi-

tion to participating in several largescale events, Insignia’s staff also organizes a successful raffle to benefit breast cancer causes. “Our goal is to improve the quality of care for women, and with our highly educated doctors, in-house lab services, and comprehensive vaccination and screening programs, we aim to make it as convenient as possible for them,” Resnick states. Tampa Palms resident and local attorney Katie Wiltse, 40, credits the doctors at Insignia with saving her life. “I moved here about a year ago from Orlando, where I went to five different physicians to determine if I had a rare form of cancer that runs in my family,” Katie explains, noting that her mother died of the cancer at age 42. “Dr. Miller (Tracey Schwartz-Miller, M.D.) and the Insignia doctors went above and beyond to advocate on my behalf to my insurance company that I needed a specific blood test to determine my predisposition to the cancer. The test revealed that I had an 86 percent lifetime risk of developing it, and I was able to have preventive surgery that I believe saved my life.”

More Than Just Ob/Gyn

Another convenience afforded by Insignia’s comprehensive approach to women’s health is the practice’s wellness and weight loss program.

“We follow Dr. Jay J. Garcia, M.D.’s weight loss program,” says Joseph Resnick, Insignia’s division administrator. “All of our physicians are trained in his program, which promotes proper nutrition and health.” The dietary program created by Dr. Garcia, one of the top weight loss physicians in the Tampa Bay area, can be found at GarciaWeightLoss.com. The program features three phases: • Adjustment, or the weight loss phase, in which you receive a personalized nutrition profile and are given the best diet and medical supplements to optimize your weight loss; • Conversion, or the transition phase, in which you move from weight loss to a program to maintain a healthy weight; and • Maintenance, or the long-term plan, in which you maintain wellness and a healthy lifestyle. Resnick says the program has been a success with patients and staff alike. Christina Boddy, Insignia’s front office manager, has lost 60 pounds in four months by following the program. “I think it’s great,” beams Boddy. “I follow the diet and I exercise, and supplements like nutrition bars also are available if you want them.” The program also includes a series of injections that contain vitamins such as B-12. Dorothy Szatkowski, the practice’s weight loss coordinator, is a medical

Make Someone Special Happy With A Gift From The New Leiva’s Jewelry By Camille Gillies If you’re looking to put smiles on your loved ones’ faces, whether for the holidays, on their next birthday, anniversary or “just because,” look no further than Leiva’s Jewelry, a new addition to the stores in the New Tampa Center, the Publix-anchored shopping plaza located at the corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) and New Tampa Blvds., a mile or so south of the Pasco-Hillsborough county line. The father-and-son team of Transito and Jonathan Leiva (pronounced LAY-Vah) opened the store a month ago and are busy stocking the display cases with show-stopping designs and precious gems. A master jeweler with more than 40 years of experience, Transito (known to his long-time customers as simply Leiva) specializes in creating custom pieces and repairing all types of jewelry. Although he has been a jeweler in Tampa for 26 years, this is the first time he has launched a storefront business of his own. “We are excited to be at this location,” says Transito, in the Spanish accent he acquired while growing up in Nicaragua. “It is a very busy area and it already has worked out well for us -the landlord wanted a jewelry store for

18

this center and we wanted to be here.” Jonathan believes the New Tampa locale is advantageous for Leiva’s new business because it’s one of the fastestgrowing areas in the region, and he reports that the new Leiva’s Jewelry is already getting an enthusiastic response from the community. “People told us we were crazy to open in this economy and around the (presidential) election, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting us,” Jonathan says. “My father has a large clientele in the area. People trust him; he is all about customer service.” Walk into the store and you’ll see a photo of Transito with client and former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, and Transito will tell you he is pleased to design pins for USF and to have USF President Judy Genshaft as a client. Since some customers drop off thousands of dollars worth of valuables, Jonathan says trust is a serious consideration when choosing a jeweler. Interestingly, trustworthiness is the trait that got Transito involved in the jewelry industry in the first place. When he came to America from Nicaragua 46 years ago, Transito worked as a janitor in a factory on W. 47th St., in New York City’s famed “Diamond District.”

While cleaning, he says he often found gold and other valuable items and immediately turned them in. The owner of the business was always impressed by Transito’s honesty. “He told me, ‘In this business, you have to be an honest man,’ and he began teaching me the trade,” Transito explains. “I started out making 75 cents an hour, but I ended up actually running the company.” After five years, Transito opened his own business while Jonathan (left) and Transito Leiva are the fathercontinuing to work at the diaand-son team at the new Leiva’s Jewelry in the mond factory. Because jewelry is such a personal gift, Transito stresses the importance of getting to know his customers. “I am in this business because I like people,” he says. And people like the Leivas, too. South Tampa resident Jim Mutascio met Leiva and Jonathan six years ago when he lived in New Tampa. Now Jim travels here to visit the master jeweler. “It’s worth the trip for anybody,”

Jim raves. “He is the best jeweler I've found in the area.” He has purchased custom-designed gifts for his wife, daughter, son and grandchildren. “They come out unbelievable!,” he says. The workmanship is fantastic. And (Transito) is just very eager to please." With the number of customers who have followed this master jeweler around Tampa, it’s evident that the Leivas make their clients happy. Dr. Marta Rivera’s Pediatric Dentistry Can Make Your Kids Smile, Too! By Gary Nager No matter how scary a visit to the dentist’s office can be for some children, it’s nice to know that there are pediatric dentists like Marta Rivera, D.M.D., who do everything they can to make the experience a little less intimidating. Dr. Rivera, a long-time New Tampa resident who calls her office the “Happy Smile Designers,” has been helping to improve the smiles of children in New Tampa for about ten years. Her original Pediatric Dentistry of New Tampa office was located in the former Model & Visitor Center at the entrance to Hunter’s Green, but that original office can’t compare, in design or technology, with the office in the Tampa Palms Professional Center (located across Commerce Park Blvd. from the New Tampa Recreation Center) she moved to about four years ago. Her office is only 15-20 minutes from most of Wesley Chapel. The office features a variety of nature scenes and cute characters that Dr. Rivera designed herself and had her aunt, a talented artist, hand-paint. The colors are bright, but soothing, and Dr. Rivera says her young patients (usually ages 3-18) really enjoy all of the various themes, although my favorite is the

painted tree in one exam room that has actual foliage attached to the tree. You really have to see it to believe it. Dr. Rivera, although most of her patients and their families call her “Dr. Marta,” was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, but moved with her family to their native Puerto Rico when she was 10 years old. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a Biology degree and then graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus School of Dentistry in San Juan. She practiced at one of her professors’ offices before opening her own practice. She also worked with the Olympic committee of Puerto Rico, taking care of the athletes and children who were boarded in the specialized training school. In 1995, Dr. Rivera went back to do her residency in pediatric dentistry at the University Children’s Hospital in San Juan Puerto Rico. Before finishing her residency, she came to Florida in 1996 to take the Florida Dental Board. She then moved to Florida in 1997 and worked in other dental offices in Lakeland and Plant City. She has been a resident of New Tampa since 1999.

of experience with both traditional braces and myofunctional orthodontics, which are unique appliances designed to train the muscles and nerves of the face, even in younger children, in order to realign the teeth.” Dr. Rivera adds that, in many cases, myofunctional orthodontics can reduce or even eliminate the need for traditional braces by teaching the tongue to sit in the correct position, correcting swallowing patterns and teaching children to breathe through

‘Dogtoberfest’ — A Barking Good Time At The Shops At Wiregrass! By Matt Wiley Puppies are cute, but how about a puppy in a squirrel costume? And, holding an acorn? Barks and the pattering of paws along Paseo Dr. filled the cool air on October 27, as thousands of area residents, some from as far away as Dade City, gathered at the Shops at Wiregrass mall with their furry, canine friends for the mall’s 4th annual “Dogtoberfest” celebration. An event to support pet adoption organized by the Tampa Cat Crusaders — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to saving community cats — “Dogtoberfest” played host to more than 50 pet adoption agencies for both cats and dogs. From dachshunds and shar peis to huskies and boxers, there were adoption agencies and rescues for numerous types of four-legged companions, including a few for cats, as well. “The whole idea is to help these local animal rescues with adoptions,” says Debbie Detweiler, director of marketing for the Shops at Wiregrass, who estimated more than 20,000 people were in attendance throughout the event. “It’s a great time of year to adopt because it’s right before the holidays. There’s no better gift.” “Dogtoberfest” also featured costume contests for pets with several

categories, including “cutest,” “scariest,” “pet/owner look-a-like” and more, as well as a full-sized obstacle course that drew a crowd all day long. The crowd cheered and laughed as pet owners helped their dogs through the course, although many dogs needed no assistance and clocked impressive times for which prizes were awarded at the end of the day. Despite the overcast skies and cool temperatures, watering stations were featured down the center of Paseo Dr. to help keep pets hydrated. Overall, pups and their owners alike couldn’t have asked for more comfortable weather or a better time! For a link to the costume contest results, be sure to check out WCNeighborhoodNews.com, and for a full “Dogtoberfest” gallery, visit the Neighborhood News Facebook page.

Barkdoll Massage Therapy Brings Licensed Massage To Your Home! By Julie Kanehl Massage is a universal language that has been “spoken” for centuries in every region of the globe, and it has many benefits, including the ability to reduce anxiety, relieve pain, reduce blood pressure and aid in relaxation. For many people, massage is a rare treat that they look forward to at the spa or as an experience during their vacation. Others use massage on a regular basis to help them deal with chronic pain, reduce inflammation or to help heal after an injury. Whatever your reason for wanting a massage, Barkdoll Massage Therapy makes it easy, affordable and, best of all, Barkdoll comes to you. Barkdoll Massage Therapy, which is an entirely mobile-based massage business, is based in the Trinity area of nearby New Port Richey and is owned and operated by Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Karla Barkdoll, who has been in the massage industry since 2001. Also serving Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and the surrounding communities, Barkdoll is completely differet in that it takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bringing it straight to you. No traffic, no stress, just pure relaxation where you feel the most comfortable!

32

Originally from a small town in central Pennsylvania, Karla moved to Baltimore, MD, where she trained at the Baltimore School of Massage. Licensed in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia and Florida, Karla is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association and is National Board-certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere — at your home, poolside or even at your office. She says that most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions. She takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them so that she can create a truly personalized massage experience. “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find,” says Lindsey, who lives in New Port Richey.

How Licensed Massage Can Improve Your Life “Your Health is Your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out which type of massage her clients prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life.

She offers a wide range of affordable licensed massage therapy services and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. This massage is very popular all over the world because of its light, long and slow strokes that relax your cares and worries away. If you’re interested in trying something a little different, hot stone massages also are available and feature heated stones in combination with the traditional Swedish-style massage. Karla says that the stones dissolve muscle tension and induce a deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease chronic pain. “During deep tissue massages, I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done,” she says. Another service Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation, which combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in your joints. Whether you’re healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition,

sports massage can be very beneficial. Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Karla uses specially designed massage table pillows so expectant mothers can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, which is why Karla offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage, and can greatly enhance the experience. If you’re looking for a way to

improve morale at work, how about offering employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands, and can be done right at the office.

My Massage With Karla Barkdoll Massage Therapy is happy to offer evening massage appointments, which made it easy for me to fit a massage with Karla into my schedule without worrying about driving or setting up a babysitter. Karla arrived right on time and brought everything she needed with her. She even wears a clinical massage uniform. I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, and, within a few minutes, Karla had the massage table up and ready to go. Before we started, she spoke to me about the kind of massage treatment I wanted, and if I had any injuries that she should know about. We decided on a combination of Swedish and deep tissue massage. She also offered me several aromatherapy options. I felt totally at ease. Karla put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I was able to enjoy the entire hour instead of wondering how many min-

utes had passed or about my kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for by a licensed health care professional. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to put on my slippers instead of my shoes! This was an incredibly cool experience that made me feel more centered, and really changed my outlook. I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. I can assure you that a massage with Karla makes a great gift, which is why I’m so happy that she offers gift certificates. But, one of the best things about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is its affordability. I might not have to wait for a special occasion because Karla’s pricing is competitive and affordable enough to fit into anyone’s budget on a regular basis. Barkdoll Massage Therapy is entirely mobile and will make appointments to come to your home or office. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available MondayWednesday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. All other days are at her discretion. To schedule an appointment or request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372-6389 or email Karla at BarkdollMassageTherapy@ Yahoo.com.

I have known Cathleene “Cathy” Tokish for at least a couple of years before she opened her Sweet Darling Quilts in the Grand Oaks Square plaza on S.R. 54, a mile or so west of Lexington Oaks, about a year ago. When she opened, the wife of Chapel Cigars (located right next door) co-owner Tom Tokish had a nice selection — from what my untrained eye could see — of patterns, fabric, tools and other necessities to make some nice quilts. Today, however, Sweet Darling Quilts has at least four or five times as much “stuff” in-store as it did a year ago, and there is a lot of opportunity for anyone who already enjoys or is even a little bit interested in quilting to take an array of classes and buy everything they need to make quilts for baby and adult beds, pillows and even quilted clothing. New classes start up again in January, so check Sweet Darling’s website or come into the store to find out what’s available. Cathy and store manager Lynn Herndon are both experienced quilters, but they both also say they still learn new things about this fun, rewarding “hobby” from the quilters and even award-winning quilt designers who come into Sweet Darling Quilts. For example, well-known local artist and quilt designer Paula Ashford Lewis, who displays her amazing original cartoon character quilts at Sweet Darling, won “Best in Show” at the Cypress Creek Quilter’s Guild annual show (which was held at USF the weekend of Nov. 9-11), for her newest creation, “The Picnic,” which is a scene (photo top left) depicting a black-and-floral cat named Black Bart who has, “Invited the birds for a picnic. Oh, what to serve?” “A lot of people who come into the store ask if they can buy patterns of Paula’s designs,” says Cathy. “It’s a lot of work to change a design into a pattern, but we keep hoping Paula will do it because her designs are just so unique and adorable!” Cathy and Lynn agree that Sweet Darling Quilts is a sea of fabrics, patterns and Sweet Darling is a lot more than everything else you need to make beautiful holiday gifts.

name just a few. “Our customers pay 50 to 95 percent less than what they would pay in retail stores,” says Amber. “And, consigners can expect a 50 to 80 percent return on items consigned and sold.” The twins, who created their own logo and website, hand-select each item sold in their boutique and plan to offer their own original garments at A&A sometime next year. For more info, call A&A Boutique (2653 BBD Blvd.) at 528-8765 or visit Facebook.com/AABoutiqueLLC.

Wolf’s Den To Send Items To Sandy Victims!

My friend Roger Wolf at the Wolf’s Den Restaurant, located at 27606 S.R. 56, in the Seven Oaks Plaza (next to SunTrust Bank), is collecting non-perishable food, household and hygiene items that he plans to drive by truck to New York and New Jersey to help those decimated by the recent Hurricane Sandy. “I just felt like I needed to do something to help those folks,” says Roger. “Drop off your items here, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., by Monday, November 19, and we’ll get the items to the people who need them.” He notes that he is not seeking cash donations for this drive. For additional information, stop in at Wolf’s Den or call 907-9124.

Nelson Dentistry Earns Program Accreditation

Congratulations to Jay Nelson, DMD, and his Nelson Dentistry, located on S.R. 54 in Lutz, a couple of miles west of the junction with S.R. 56, for earning program accreditation from the American

Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). “We congratulate Nelson Dentistry on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a dental sleep medicine facility,” said AADSM president Dr. Gail Demko. “Nelson Dentistry will provide the highest quality care for patients with sleep disordered breathing.” Dental sleep medicine is a growing segment of dentistry that focuses on managing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT), an effective alternative to the standard Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP therapy. Only a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine can provide treatment with OAT, a mouthguard-like device worn only during sleep to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. For more info about Nelson Dentistry (1928 Highland Oak Blvd., Lutz), call 949-0424, visit SleepBetterFlorida.com or see the ad on page 35. For info about dental sleep medicine and the AADSM, visit AADSM.org.

Shops At Wiregrass Dining Updates Since our last issue, when we told you about several planned dining options at the Shops at Wiregrass mall, we’re still awaiting the Grand Opening of the new Blue Lagoon Island Lounge & Grill, which now was expected to open by about the time you receive this issue. The place has a great menu of authentic Caribbean cuisine, so check it out! For more info, visit BlueLagoonTampa.com or call 994-1526.

Our editor loves the parmesan-and-potato-crusted snapper at the new Ciao Italian Bistro in the Shops at Wiregrass mall.

Meanwhile, the new Ciao Italian Bistro has opened and is offering a fantastic 20-percent-off your entire bill with the coupon in the ad on page 35. I’ve only had a chance to sample Ciao’s Italian fare once since it replaced Pagelli’s in the mall, but I really enjoyed both the parmesan-and-potato-crusted snapper pictured above (served with great homemade mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus, too) and the rigatoni alla Toscana, which features large tube pasta sautéed with Italian sausage, roasted peppers, onion and tomato sauce, topped with garlic-herb Rondele. For more info, call 907-2200 or visit CiaoItalianBistro.com. And last, but not least, the planned new Panera Bread at Wiregrass is hiring now to fill the following positions: Bakery Opener, Sandwich Line, Cashier, Food Prep, Dining Room, Dishwasher, Third Shift Baker, Catering Coordinator and Restaurant Managers. For additional info, apply on-line at PaneraBread.jobs.
