Pasco County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) chairman Mike Moore has always taken great pride in his efforts to expedite the construction of the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at the busy junction of I-75 and S.R. 56. With help from state legislators, what was originally scheduled for a 2024

completion was moved up and expected to be finished by the fall of 2021. However, that date is now very much in question, which has riled Moore, who represents District 2, which includes most of Wesley Chapel. “It’s very, very disappointing,” he says. Armed with letters from constituents and his own daily experience driving through the congestion at the under-construction interchange, Moore is disappointed to hear that the project

— originally expected to cost $18.5 million but now carrying a $33-million price tag — could now drag on until the spring of 2022 or even later. Which is why, when Moore drives by the project now and sees workers, well, not working, it makes him seethe. His frustration was on full display at a BCC meeting last month, when Moore delivered a blistering attack on the company, D.A.B. Constructors, Inc., in charge of the project.

Moore said he recently drove through the interchange and took pictures of the general malaise happening. He said he saw two workers standing next to a truck doing nothing, and a second group of construction workers standing on a hill. “On a project of that magnitude, those are the only people I saw working on a Monday, a sunny Monday, at 1:30 See “DDI” on page 4!

We Have Moved Again, Thanks To All Of These Businesses! An editorial by Gary Nager When you stay in business for 27 years and have had to move more than one or two times, you definitely dread having to do it again. Well, I will be celebrating my 27th anniversary of owning and publishing the New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News in a new location (more on exactly where that is below) in February, which will be our sixth office location in all that time. I doubt that anybody can name all five of our previous office locations, but rather than make a contest out of it, I’ll tell you all of them at the end of this editorial (if even I can remember them). This would definitely have been the worst and hardest move, business or residence, of my entire life, if not for the help of several of the advertisers who appear in this publication and one Rotarian I greatly admire. I don’t consider myself to be a “hoarder,” per se, but those of us in the news business are supposed to save records for at least a certain period of time and I may have taken that to something of an extreme in my nearly three decades of serving the same distribution areas. In addition, there was a time when we would order many hundreds (500-600 or more) of extra copies of each issue, so that we could, by leaving copies around the community, provide more people with all of the information they couldn’t get anywhere else. But, not only did that never benefit the business financially, it left us with hundreds of extra copies of hundreds of issues of the paper. Do the math. That’s literally “crap-tons” of paper! We started ordering and saving fewer extra copies a few years ago — and we’ve always thrown out/recycled hundreds of copies each year, but all I knew was that we couldn’t (and shouldn’t) take it all with us to our slightly smaller new office, located less than a half-mile west on S.R. 54 from the office we were leaving, both of which are very close to Saddlebrook Resort.

So first, I called on Cam Caudle, a U.S. Army veteran and member of the Rotary Club of New Tampa (the club that has been meeting on Friday mornings at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club for almost as long as I’ve been in business). Cam also is a recent (2015) “Franchisee of the Year” of Shred360, an incredible mobile document destruction company. So, whether you have years of no-longerneeded financial and other records that you want to safely dispose of, or thousands of copies of publications that you’ll never need (or both), Cam will send his mobile unit to your home or office and will shred all that paper, on-site which will then be recycled. (Note — The Neighborhood News is, and always has been, printed on 100% recycled paper, no matter which stock we’ve been using.) In our case, Cam’s guy Ed (photo above) pulled the truck up to our office, and we dropped those thousands of copies into a rolling bin from our second floor stairs. The bin then got loaded into the truck (several times) and I was able to watch, on a small monitor, 27 years of my memories literally being torn to shreds...in a good way. Got a large or small shredding job for Shred 360? Cam does some shredding events for charity throughout the year, but his prices are very fair and his people are as excellent at their jobs as Cam is funny. Call Cam at (813) 944-2223 or visit Shred360.com and tell him I sent you (and told you to watch his stand-up comedy debut. Really funny stuff, but not suitable for kids!) Neighborhood News

in the afternoon,” Moore said. “I think that’s insane, that’s ridiculous, that’s embarrassing.” More than 100,000 vehicles pass through the interchange on a daily basis. The eagerly-anticipated DDI is designed to create fewer conflict points at the interchange, and despite looking like a confusing, diamond-shaped jumble of roads in pictures, Florida’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (at Exit 210 of I-75, in Sarasota) has been lauded for being safer and more efficient than your traditional junctions.

Businesses Are Unhappy, Too

The Wesley Chapel DDI will be Florida’s second, and Moore isn’t the only one disappointed that it is so far behind schedule. Could The NBA’s Raptors End Up Training Locally? By JOHN C. COTEY john@neighborhoodnews.com The NBA’s Toronto Raptors may have trouble finding a place to play the upcoming season back home in Canada, due to the worsening Covid-19 situation in Ontario (and U.S.-Canada travel restrictions), so the 2018-19 league champions are looking for alternatives. The Tampa Bay area has been named as one of those possibilities, and some oddsmakers are even listing it as the favorite. If that happens, sources say that the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County has been mentioned as one possible site to host the team’s practices and conditioning. SportsNet, a sports specialty service owned by Rogers Sports & Media One, says that both USF and the new Wesley Chapel Sports Campus could both serve as training sites for the Raptors. At USF, the Muma Center, a 50,000-sq.-ft. facility with multiple courts and multiple training amenities such as film rooms, is one option. The other is the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus, which opened this summer and boasts 98,000 square feet of indoor space that can be configured for

eight basketball courts. It would be quite a coup for the Wiregrass Ranch facility.

Is There Always A 2nd Time?

Although it did not have Covid-19 to deal with at the time, the Wesley Chapel area already is 1-for-1 when it comes to hosting major sports teams. In 2017, AdventHealth Center Ice

and Saddlebrook Resort hosted the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team prior to the team winning gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. SportsNet originally reported on Nov. 10 that the Raptors are looking for places in the U.S. to train and play for the upcoming NBA season, which is scheduled to begin on Dec. 21.

Nashville and Tampa both emerged as possibilities, primarily because they have arenas that can host NBA games. The Tampa Bay area also has the added advantage of being home to a large percentage of Canadian snowbirds, who already flock to Toronto Blue Jays spring training games in nearby Dunedin. Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa, has plenty of experience hosting basketball events, like the NCAA men’s tournament games and the NCAA Women’s Final Four three times (which it will host again in 2025). But, Amalie also is home to the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, which will play its 2021 season — tentatively scheduled to begin Jan. 1 — during the same time. With the NHL likely to go with a modified bubble, or multi-hub, approach to its season, if Tampa is chosen to host a handful of NHL teams, it would be almost impossible to also host the Raptors. Ironically, what might make the Bay area attractive as a hub for the NHL is AdventHealth Center Ice, which has enough rinks to host multiple team practices, and there also are ice facilities in nearby Brandon, Ellenton, Oldsmar and Clearwater.

By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com AdventHealth is putting its name on another prominent sports facility in Wesley Chapel. The healthcare system, which includes the AdventHealth Tampa and Wesley Chapel hospitals, announced on Oct. 21 that it has agreed to a multi-year sponsorship agreement with RADDSports for the naming rights to the AdventHealth Sports Arena at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County. While the Sports Campus itself hasn’t changed names, the 98,000-sq.ft. indoor facility will soon bear the AdventHealth Sports Arena name (see rendering). AdventHealth also has owned the naming rights to the Center Ice facility on S.R. 56 since before the healthcare giant changed its name from Florida Hospital to AdventHealth. “AdventHealth is committed to partnerships that amplify the health and wellness of the communities we serve,” said Erik Wangsness, President and CEO of AdventHealth Wesley Chapel. “We are much more than a hospital and remain focused on empowering our communities to take wellness into their own hands. The AdventHealth Sports Arena will provide a platform for athletes to showcase their skill and talent while working to stay in peak condition.” The Sports Arena is the home for travel tournaments for basketball (the building can be configured as eight regulation-sized courts) and volleyball (up to 16 courts), as well as gymnastics and cheerleading camps and competitions, to name just a few. The Sports Campus also will host soccer tournaments and other sports on its two outdoor fields. The campus also

The eight-year Advent Health agreement is for $10,000 a month, with an option for more years. “AdventHealth is a quality health care provider and one of the bestknown names in the entire state of Florida,” said Richard Blalock, CEO and founder of RADDSports. “We couldn’t have found a better organization to serve as the primary sponsor of the Sports Campus. It means the thousands of athletes from across the country who will participate in basketball, volleyball and cheerleading events every weekend, as well as the local residents who take part in our programs during the week, will associate AdventHealth with a commitment to staying healthy and active.” The Sports Arena opened in August. The first event, a basketball recruiting showcase, was held the last weekend in August. Although the Covid-19 pandemic has slowed the travel and youth sports markets down, the facility has something booked “almost every weekend,”

between August 2020 and Aug. 2021, according to RADDSports director of marketing Jannah Nager. Corley Says 2020 Vote Smoother Than Hoped

We Thank All of Our Major Sponsors:

Despite worries nationwide about the voting process in 2020, due to taking place in the middle of a pandemic and concerns raised by President Trump about the validity of mail-in votes, Pasco’s Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley said the county’s efforts were about as smooth as could be. “Overall, it exceeded my wildest expectations,” Corley said. Roughly 304,000 votes were cast in Pasco County, including 302,621 votes for president. President Donald Trump received 179,621 votes, or 59.4 percent, while President-elect Joe Biden received 119,073, or 39.4 percent. Nationally, however, Biden defeated Trump by roughly 6-million votes and in the Electoral College (at our press time) 306-232. The 304,000 votes cast in Pasco represented 78 percent of the eligible voters, far exceeding 2016’s totals of 244,950 ballots cast and a 73-percent turnout. Wesley Chapel Fall Festival Puts The Grove’s Future On Display!

Congratulations go out to The Grove, the North Tampa Bay Chamber and Florida Penguin Productions for a hugely successful, socially distant 16th edition of the Wesley Chapel Fall Festival. Held Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in a new location at The Grove, on grass (instead of asphalt), with the under-renovation Grove Movie Theater visible to all attendees, this year’s Fall Festival also featured the usual food, rides and vendor booths (all on display here). A new wrinkle was that Florida Penguin Productions upgraded the entertainment and charged attendees to see top local bands like the The Black Honkeys (shown here, bottom right) and the Greg Billings Band. The weather was hot, but beautiful. A great job by all! — GN (with photos by Charmaine George, Florida Penguin Productions & GN)

Local Sikh Temple Is A Haven For The Hungry By JOHNC. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com

Tucked between Cross Creek Blvd. and the entrance to Cory Lake Isles on Morris Bridge Rd., a couple of miles south of the Pasco County line, the Sikh Gurdwara of Tampa Bay temple, which typically goes about its business in relative anonymity, has become a haven for the hungry. Every Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., almost since the Covid-19 pandemic began, hundreds of families happily have received aluminum, plastic and styrofoam containers filled with hot meals — rice, soups, pastas, curries, veggie burgers and even burritos. What started as a mission to help a few has quickly evolved into a mission feeding hundreds. “When the pandemic started in midMarch, we had to shut down our temples like all the churches, and we were wondering how we could do something to lift the spirits of our congregation,” says Harpartap Singh, one of the temple’s volunteers. The congregants turned to the temple’s langar, the community kitchen of a Gurdwara, which serves meals free of charge to everyone, regardless of religion, gender or ethnicity. “One of the primary things in our religion is that everybody is treated equal,” Singh says. The Gurdwara expanded the concept, and reached out beyond its congregation. The members hung banners and posted invitations on social media. On March 18, it began — volunteers made 300 meals, although Singh says they were only expecting 15, or maybe 30 people. The plan was to take whatever was left over to Feeding Tampa Bay, part of the Feeding America network, which provides food to thousands of families that need it. However, that Sunday, the crowd was overwhelming. More than 250 meals were served. “And, we haven’t stopped since,” Singh says. Now, the Sikh Gurdwara of Tampa Bay, which has been at its Morris Bridge location for 27 years, serves nearly 800 meals every Sunday. And, that number continues to grow. A few Sundays ago, the main course was split pea curry, prepared as usual by three chefs that Singh says are all excellent. Main courses are typically accompanied by bottled water, fruit, chips and salad. Singh says the “humbling experience” of feeding the hungry has moved his congregation, and has inspired the group to do more. “Barely a week goes by that we don’t stand there and cry with somebody,” Singh says. “They tell us it is the best meal they have had all week, and tell 14

us stories about how some of their family members have died and there was nothing they could do. We have fed people who are living in their cars.” The hot meals are just part of the Sikh outreach. Volunteers take food all over Tampa Bay, seeking out the homeless and the needy. At one location, under a bridge in the Mango area of Hillsborough County, Singh says that 70-80 homeless people now wait for the Gurdwara volunteers to arrive with the food on Sundays. Whether it’s in the downtown areas of Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater, a handful of loyal volunteers fan out to find people on the street to distribute an additional 200300 meals. The Gurdwara members provide groceries for roughly 50 families. They have fed and paid the rent for international students at USF who have lost their jobs and cannot return home. They deliver food to an orphanage in Wesley Chapel that cares for autistic children, as well as first responders and those on the front lines of the Covid-19 battle. The volunteer list at the temple is 400 strong. District 7 Tampa City Council member Luis Viera, who has visited the Sunday food drive multiple times, says he will be giving the group a City Council commendation in the coming weeks. “What they do is incredible,” he says. “They are good people.” Most of the expenses are paid by the congregation, which is comprised of many doctors, engineers and business owners throughout the Tampa Bay area. Some sponsors also have stepped forward. In all, Singh says the Gurdwara has been responsible for distributing roughly 19,000 food packages and $60,000 worth of dry groceries since the pandemic began. He says the congregation sees some

of the real impacts of the Covid-19 battle up close on a weekly basis. The pain is real. The Gurdwara has enough food to last through February of 2021, and its members have no intention of stopping, even if the pandemic passes. They are even looking into becoming a farmshare conduit. “Even though this is a great country, there are so many people who need

help,” Singh says. “It has truly touched us and lifted our spirits, and that’s what any religion is about. We are blessed to be able to do this.” The Sikh Gurdwara is located at 15302 Morris Bridge Rd. in Thonotosassa. Pebble Creek Family Dentistry Celebrates Ten Years & Adds New Dentist By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN It’s been 10 years since Vijay Patel, D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) opened Pebble Creek Family Dentistry at the corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and Regents Park Dr. (next to what is now the Chase Bank) in New Tampa in November 2010. During that time, his practice has grown and thrived, thanks to his focus on ensuring that every patient who walks through his doors has a good experience. “Basically,” says Dr. Patel, “We provide great service, care about our patients’ dental health, and do everything we can to help them.” Because of the growth in the practice, and to be able to continue to serve more patients, Dr. Vijay Patel (who goes by “Dr. Patel”) brought on an associate in July of last year. Dr. Krupal Patel, D.M.D. (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry) is not related to the original Dr. Patel and goes by “Dr. K.P.” to avoid confusion. Dr. K.P. earned his D.M.D. degree from the College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL, in May 2019. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree

in Economics in 2014 and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology in 2013, both from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Immediately upon graduation, he joined Dr. Patel at Pebble Creek Family Dentistry. Dr. Patel earned his B.S. degree in Biology from the University

of South Florida in Tampa in 2002, and his D.D.S. degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 2006. “He provides the same caring and compassionate dentistry as I do,” says Dr. Patel about his associate, whom he met well before Dr. K.P. became a dentist. “I’ve known Dr. Patel for a long

time,” says Dr. K.P. “I actually shadowed him here before dental school. Dr. Patel motivated me to pursue dentistry and it came around full circle. Right around the time he needed someone, I had just gotten out of school and I was ready to work.” General dentistry procedures offered by the two doctors include cleanings, exams and X-rays, composite fillings, root canal therapy and tooth extractions. Additionally, patients can opt for one of the many cosmetic procedures offered, including porcelain crowns, teeth whitening, dental bridges, veneers, bonding, inlays, onlays and more. Dr. Patel encourages anyone who wants to learn more about the practice to search “Pebble Creek Family Dentistry” on Google and read the more than 130 positive reviews. He says readers will get a clear picture of the kind of service that’s provided at the practice, and see why so many patients choose it. Al Grasser is a Wesley Chapel resident who is one of Dr. Patel’s very happy patients. Grasser has been seeing Dr. Patel since he opened the Pebble Creek office 10 years ago. “I’m impressed with Dr. Patel and the service,” Grasser says. “Everyone is super nice, and I can schedule an

Dr. Krupal Patel (Dr. K.P.) says one of the great thing about working at Pebble Creek Family Dentistry is “whenever we get a bigger case that takes more thought, we tackle it together and think about how to approach it.” (Photo: Charmaine George)

Sharing The Credit...

Dr. Patel agrees that one of the strengths of the practice is the fantastic staff. Like Dr. K.P., he credits his three hygienists and three assistants with taking great care of the patients, and says his four front desk staffers are equally supportive and patient-centered. “I have the best staff possible,” says Dr. Patel, proudly. “We take a lot of time with our patients to make sure they are comfortable, including helping them to understand their treatment and answering all their questions about

appointment whenever I need it. The work that does Dr. Patel does is outstanding, and I have recommended him to all my friends and relatives.” Grasser also has seen Dr. K.P., and says that if Dr. Patel trusts him, he trusts him, too. “Absolutely,” Grasser says. “Dr. Patel would make sure he hires someone who is well qualified.” Having two doctors in the office allows the pair to collaborate on more complicated cases. “Whenever we get a bigger case that takes more thought, we tackle it together and think about how to approach it,” explains Dr. K.P., “whether he’s doing the procedure or I am.” Dr. K.P. says the relationship between the two doctors has evolved in the time he’s been in the practice. “In the beginning,” he explains, “it was very much a mentoring relationship. Over time, he’s treated me as an equal, even though he’s the boss. My opinion matters and we bounce ideas off each other. We have a great relationship.” He especially appreciates what he describes as a great working environment. “It’s just a nice place to be,” says Dr. K.P. “It’s a very spacious, up-todate facility and a relaxed environment. insurance. Anything they need help with, we take the time to make sure they understand it.” And, Pebble Creek Family Dentistry accepts most PPO insurance policies. The doctors see patients ages 6 and older, so everyone in the family — except for the very youngest children — can be part of the same practice and see the same doctors. Dr. Patel and Dr. K.P. spend much of their free time volunteering for BAPS Charities, which is a non-profit organization that is the charitable arm of the

Hindu temple both doctors attend. BAPS is short for Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha. BAPS Charities organizes events such as walk-a-thons to raise money for other nonprofit organizations, including Feeding America Tampa Bay and the Pepin Heart Institute. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused the cancellation of any walk-a-thons that would have been held in 2020. The doctors also have helped to organize and provide services at blood drives, health fairs for the community, and many other types of community-oriented events. Dr. Patel says the practice has not had to make many adjustments to be able to continue to see patients during the pandemic. “We are open,” he says. “We are taking all precautions that are needed to ensure the health and safety of our patients and employees. But, we are open for everything, with the same hours, and we are confident that we are keeping our patients safe.” Pebble Creek Family Dentistry is located at 19007 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. It is open Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment, visit PebbleCreekFamilyDentistry.com, call (813) 406-4947, or see the ad on page 25 of this issue.

American Wood Flooring Offers New Looks For Old Floors By MIKE CAMUNAS There’s a little tidbit about Andy Dunning that will leave you floored. “Oh, I’ve probably worked on the floors of nearly every house right in this area,” says the owner and CEO of American Wood Flooring, a fixture on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. (in the SuperTarget-anchored Northwood Plaza) for more than a dozen years. Dunning says he has added a few more homes during the Covid-19 pandemic. “With more people home, either just in general because of Covid or because they’re working from home for the foreseeable future, lots of them are spending money they would use on, say, a vacation they can’t go on,” says Dunning. “They are re-doing the floors in their homes that they might have been putting off.” It sounds like this may be a good time for an upgrade, and something many homeowners have picked up on. And, that is the silver lining of the pandemic for American Wood Flooring. “Despite all that’s happened this year,” Dunning says, “it’s been a record year for us.” While styles change from year to year, Dunning says LVP, or Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring, has been the most popular choice in 2020: “The resiliency and different looks of LVPs have just taken over everything.” One big reason — in a state where it rains nearly all year, this type of flooring is 100-percent waterproof. “Kind of a necessity around here, don’t you think?,” Dunning asks. In addition to keeping things dry, LVP is durable, in that it’s pet-proof and even also dent-proof. That’s because LVP floors may look like wood, but they aren’t. Dunning says that LVP floor panels are made from a PVC-type material and their tight lock-and-fold system is what keeps the moisture out, even from the attached padding underneath that is made from an anti-microbial melamine material. The LVP also is made with a stone-composite material, which is what Dunning says makes it 100-percent dentproof, adding that is a change from when

18

American Wood Flooring owner/CEO Andy Dunning says he has been even busier than usual this year, as many local residents have been turning to his store (located on BBD, just north of the county line) for remodeling during the pandemic. (Photos: Mike Camunas) LVPs first arrived on the scene and were made from a wood composite material. That material, however, was susceptible to dents, especially from heavier appliances like refrigerators or washing machines. “They’re always coming out with newer, more innovative ways to keep the product getting better and better,” Dunning says. “The SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) is way better than the WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) and that was the knock on laminates when they first came out.” American Wood Flooring doesn’t just sell and install LVPs, even though Dunning says that’s his best seller. They will still put down wood floors, as well as carpet, tile and laminate. In fact, Dunning says tile is making a comeback of sorts, while noting that many customers don’t know that American Wood Flooring also can install backsplashes. “These things go in cycles, if you ask me,” Dunning says.

New Tampa resident Janet Noblett agrees. She had American Wood Flooring rip out the carpet in her master bedroom and the work was so good, well, she decided to do the three other bedrooms. “About a year after we did that, I looked at my husband and said, ‘You know this has to happen now,’ so we went right back to Andy,” Noblett says. “I was really pleased, and I’m the type of person that I usually don’t just choose one company. I had four companies come out and show me different types and pricing and procedures, and grilled them to death. I just felt he really knew his stuff and was the most profes-

sional and on time! A lot of times, people don’t show up or are late — you want to give them your money, but they don’t show up. He showed right up. I would absolutely recommend (AWF) to anyone in my neighborhood or community because I know they will do the best job.” A full recommendation also comes from Murphy, who says he appreciates Dunning’s fair and honest approach. “(Andy)’s just straightforward with cost and the (installers) have been respectful and helpful and solid,’’ Murphy says. “The few times we had a problem with the outcome, they fixed it quickly, so they stand by the work…I have recommended Andy several times, even to my parents.” Dunning notes that his installers are all AWF employees and not outside contractors, “So, we make sure your job is done right!”

Replaced By Online Shopping?

Despite some restrictions still put in place on stores these days, Dunning says that his storefront continues to be busy. “Probably even busier now, to be honest,” he says. That’s because when it comes to purchasing flooring, customers still want to see and touch samples, not just look at them online. “They want to see the colors and the materials with their eyes and hands,”

Satisfied Customers!

And, whenever the cycle changes, American Wood Flooring isn’t without its repeat customers. “We’ve probably used them 6-7 times over the years,” Wesley Chapel resident Patrick Murphy says. “They did our home and then another home that was a rental, and it had to be totally redone once (the tenant) moved out. (Andy) replaced probably 2,500 square feet of floor.”

Max’s Natural Pet Market & Salon Has Everything Your Pets Need! By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN When Paul Spalvieri opened Max’s Natural Pet Market & Salon in 2019, it was because he couldn’t find the kind of pet nutrition and grooming he wanted for Max, his beloved bichon frisé. A year later, Paul says every day, he sees confirmation that it was the right move to open the store, which is located on S.R. 54, about a mile east of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., near Saddlebrook Resort. More and more customers are finding something at Max’s that they can’t get elsewhere — whether it’s premium nutrition, impeccable grooming our outstanding customer service. Paul and his wife, Martina, who live in Watergrass, also are parents to Missy, a Havanese, and three human kids. “When we first opened the store, it was all about Max, but our focus has changed,” says Paul. “Now, it’s all about your pet. We offer the highest quality advice, products and grooming that you can get in the area. We have your dog or cat’s best interest at heart, and they are the number one reason why we open our doors every day.” He says it’s a different concept and experience than shopping at the big box pet stores. “It’s more consultative, and solutions-based,” he says. “Most of the customers who come to us have (pets with) underlying issues. Their dog is itching, or the coat isn’t silky, or their pet has a runny stool, or eats grass, or other issues that don’t sit right with the pet parent.” Paul says that although his customers should always first seek the help of a qualified veterinarian for these types of issues, the nutritional consultants at Max’s can provide advice about the best products to buy in order to help dog and cat owners choose what will best allow them to follow their vets’ advice and have healthier, happier pets. Max’s Natural Pet Market & Salon carries nine brands of high-quality organic foods, including raw nutrition, and Paul explains that each brand addresses specific problems that your dog or cat may be experiencing, from allergic reactions to digestive issues.

He adds, “At big box stores, there’s so much variety that it’s just shooting in the dark. But at Max’s, it’s different. We love those cases where a parent says, ‘he’s just a picky eater.’ Tell us what food he’s eating, and we should be able to tell you why he (or she) is so picky.” In addition to food, Max’s Pet Market & Salon has a wide variety of products for all breeds of dogs and cats, including natural and other treats, beds, supplies, collars,

their protective humans, such as Scott Kresh. Scott is a customer who says that his whole experience as a pet parent changed when he discovered Max’s Natural Pet Market. He and his wife live in New River Township with no kids, and say their dogs are their life. They were having ongoing problems with their pit bull, Maya, with itching, red, raw skin. Their vet was providing allergy pills and shots, but the skin problems persisted. “I was buying the food my vet recommended,” Scott says. “I thought I was buying a great food.” But, that’s when they happened to notice Max’s Pet Market and went in to see if they had any other options. Scott first spoke with one of the store’s nutritional consultants, then came back the next day to talk with Paul to choose a different food for his dog that Paul says, “was another brand’s recent improvement” (on a similar food) over the brand Scott’s vet recommended. “I think it wasn’t even five days later and we noticed no more red flare ups,” says Scott, adding that Maya has stayed on the food ever since and continues to have no skin issues. Then, Scott got a pit bull puppy and named him Niko. At first, Niko seemed fine. Then, “all of a sudden, he’s throwing up. He gets worse, and it’s coming out both ends.”

Following his success with Maya, Scott took Niko to Max’s and Paul immediately gave him recommendations to solve the problem, including adding cow’s milk to his diet. “It literally cleared up in two days, with no meds,” Scott says. Scott has recommended Max’s Natural Pet Market to many of his friends. “You can’t go wrong,” he says. “He resolved major allergy issues with one dog and digestive issues with the other. It was no medication, just diet.” Scott also switched his cat’s diet. Previously, he says that Kara was always throwing up and having hairballs. Her raw kibble dry food from Max’s has helped her have fewer hairballs. And, it’s not just food that Max’s does well, says Scott. When he needed a harness for Niko, Paul spent 40 minutes making sure they got exactly the right fit.

Covid’s Silver Lining

While Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on many local businesses, Paul says that being allowed to stay open as an essential business, providing food for people’s pets, was a unique opportunity to serve the community. He says the store saw tremendous growth, as existing customers bought more than usual as a precaution, and many new customers came in for the first time. “We did change the model a bit,” he says. “Now, our customers can go to our

By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN If you’re frustrated with long wait times at your doctor’s office, not being able to get in to see your physician, or constantly being surprised with how much you pay out-of-pocket for medical expenses — even with health insurance — you might want to consider direct primary care. Karina Azank Parilo, M.D., of KAP Medical Group, offers direct primary care, which changes the way patients and their doctor relate to one another by removing dealing with insurance companies altogether. KAP Medical Group, which is open to all ages, is located in the Windfair Professional Park in Wesley Chapel, behind the retail plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. that includes Dickey’s BBQ and The Hungry Greek restaurants. Instead of collecting payment from insurance companies, patients (or “members”) pay a monthly fee, which covers unlimited office visits and virtual visits via phone or video, in-office tests, well checks, sick visits, weight management and management of chronic medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, asthma, arthritis and more. Dr. Parilo is originally from Tampa. She earned her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology from Duke University in Durham, NC, then earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of South Florida in 2005. She completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Massachusetts Family Residency Program in Worcester in 2010. After working in a large private practice in Wesley Chapel for eight years, Dr. Parilo opened KAP Medical

How Direct Primary Care Works

Dr. Parilo says the monthly fee is a transparent, controlled expense, which is affordable for most people. “It’s $54 to $66 per month for an individual,” Dr. Parilo explains, “which is a lot cheaper than most cell phone and cable bills.” She recommends patients still carry health insurance because the monthly fee doesn’t cover expenses outside of routine care, including hospitalizations, surgical procedures, visits to specialists and lab work. However, some in-office procedures are included in the monthly cost, with just a small supply fee charged, and Dr. Parilo says she has negotiated prices with labs, so that you may pay much less for your lab work than you would pay out-ofpocket if you used your insurance with a high deductible. “We recommend our patients have catastrophic insurance or a high deductible plan or something they can fall back on to cap their cost, which is how insurance was originally meant to be,” she explains. “Originally, health insurance was like car insurance. day or next-day office visit, or a quick text, phone call or video chat. KAP Medical Group uses an app that maintains patient privacy and connects directly with each patient’s electronic medical record.

Covid Care & Precautions

Dr. Parilo says that her direct primary care model was an advantage when the office had to shut down at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic. While some practices had to close their doors altogether, KAP Medical Group had a seamless transition to virtual patient care. While the practice has experienced a couple of positive Covid-19 tests, Dr. Parilo says everyone has recovered well, and that KAP Medical Group continues to follow strict guidelines to keep all of its patients safe. “We have frail patients and don’t want anyone getting hurt,” she says. Now, as the pandemic continues to play out, Dr. Parilo and Michelle are in the office three days a week, and doing telehealth the other days. “We have a warm and fuzzy practice, with a coffee machine and a couch,” says Dr. Parilo. “We try not to have you wait, but if you have to wait, it’s a comfy place. But, no one has sat on our couch in seven months, so it’s been different.”

The Patients Love It, Too!

nally began seeing Dr. Parilo when her sons, now 27 and 22, were in elementary school. “I chose her to begin with because she saw adults and children,” Ceparano says, “so our family wouldn’t have to go to two different doctors.” Back then, though, when Dr. Parilo was with a larger practice, Ceparano says she was often frustrated with the office staff and the way things are generally done at most other doctor’s offices. If someone in her family was sick, they would offer her an appointment several days down the road. Sometimes, she would have to sit in the waiting room

an hour or more. And, at times, there was even more wait time to see the doctor once you actually got into a room. “I’m not bashing the practice she was with,” says Ceparano, “because they’re all like that.” But, the hassle was worth it, because Ceparano says Dr. Parilo is an excellent doctor who truly cares about her patients, and is extremely thorough and detailed. She also says that when Dr. Parilo started her own practice, she would have followed the doctor anywhere, but she had no idea what to expect from the direct primary care model. As it turns

out, she has been very pleased. “I love this new way of practicing,” Ceparano says. “It really comes down to being very personal. I don’t ever have to worry about seeing a physician’s assistant instead of the doctor herself. Not only do I get in the same day, I always get to see her.” The transition from insurance-based fees to the monthly fees has been a benefit to Ceparano’s family, too. “It’s so well worth it,” she says. “I feel like it pays for itself. If you need to, you can go in 10 times in a month and you’re not paying a $30 or $40 copay each time.” Ceparano adds that she and her husband and her sons won’t go to any other doctor for primary care. “My son’s job takes him out of town a lot, but he doesn’t have to worry about finding a doctor. If he’s in California, for example, he has the app on his phone and he can call, text, or video chat. It really is a great benefit.” KAP Medical Group Direct Primary Care & Family Medicine is located at 2615 Windguard Cir., Suite 101, across Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. from AdventHealth Wesley Chapel. The practice is currently open by appointment only. For more information or to make an appointment, see the ad on pg. 27 of this issue, visit KAPMedicalGroup. com or call (813) 536-0050.

Covid-19, Wiregrass Ranch Football-0 (Playoffs)

By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Even before the 2020 high school football season kicked off, local football coaches knew the challenge of surviving a full season under the cloud of the Covid-19 pandemic would their toughest challenge. For Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH), it turned out to be too tough. With just one game remaining before what would have been a sixth straight trip to the playoffs, the Bulls announced that their season was shutting down prematurely. “A harsh ending,” Bulls’ coach Mark Kantor called it. While both Wesley Chapel and Cypress Creek avoided a Covid-19 shutdown of their seasons — both lost in the first round of the playoffs on Nov. 13 — Kantor was left to wonder what might have been. The Bulls had to forfeit their season finale against Largo, as well as their Class 7A first round playoff game against East River, leaving the Bulls with a 4-6 finish. So, what happened? Kantor isn’t sure. After a disappointing 48-14 loss to Tampa Bay Tech on Oct. 30, the Bulls regrouped for practice the following Monday. By Wednesday, players started calling in sick with various maladies, from fevers to headaches. In all, eight Bulls ended up testing positive for the novel coronavirus. “We do such a great job; we spray our locker room down with a germicide that is supposed to kill just about everything, and we did that every day,” Kantor says. “I think something happened between our last game with TBT and the weather and Halloween. I can only speculate

and assume what happened. But, all of a sudden we went from one kid being sick to 2 to 4 to 8.” While those players could have been quarantined and the season could have gone on, Kantor and the WRH administration decided to shut the season down. “It’s hard, especially for the seniors,” Kantor says. “They had at least two games left, maybe three, maybe four. We took the precautions and thought we could beat the beast, but the beast beat us.” Dozens of high school football games have been cancelled and forfeited throughout the Tampa Bay area due to the spread of Covid-19. WRH is not alone — Sickles, Leto and Osceola high schools in Tampa Bay also had to forfeit

their respective first-round playoff games. It’s no consolation to Kantor that, in retrospect, it’s likely this entire high school athletic calendar will have one giant asterisk next to it in the record books. “From the first practice in August, I had a feeling of trepidation, all the way through,” he says. “When we got this far, we even told our kids you Soph WR Bryson Rodgers already have to be proactive. But is one of the most heavily recruited football players in Wesley Chapel. once it happens, it’s like (Photo: @IBryson13) an avalanche.” Speaking of avalanches, the offers are already pouring in for Bulls sophomore wide receiver Bryson Rodgers, who made the most of the shortened 2020 season. Since the 6-foot, 150-pounder’s season-high 207 yards and four touchdowns in a win over East Bay Oct. 16, he has received college scholarship offers from Pittsburgh, Penn State, Florida International University, South Florida and Ole Miss. He finished the season with 47 catches for 710 yards and 10 touchdowns. “Right now he’s going to college for free,” said Kantor. “We’re just going to polish him and have him ready.”

MAKING A NAME FOR THEMSELVES

By JOHN C. COTEY

COYOTE GIRLS YOUNG, SKILLED

Cypress Creek High girls soccer coach Jessica Herzek is high on her freshmen and sophomores this season, and why not? Allison Souers, one of those freshmen Herzek is happy about, scored five goals in her first-ever high school game, an 11-0 season-opening win over South Sumter. The still-young Coyotes, coming off a 9-7-1 season, have only one senior on their roster. Youngsters like junior Hailey Canady (two goals in the season-opening win), sophomore Hannah Fulpo (a goal and two assists) and sophomore keeper Alex Capocy (1.16 goalsagainst-average) will lead the way. “I have numerous girls who, if they choose, could go on to play at the collegiate level,” Herzek says. “I feel this will be an amazing season, but the next few years will get better and better.” Since taking over in 2017, Wesley Chapel High coach Mark Leonard has set a school record for wins every year, including last year’s 20-4 mark, and won three straight District 4A-6 titles. Keeping that going will be the goal for this season, despite an 8-0 loss to Tampa Catholic in this year’s season opener. Leonard says returning seniors Sydney Bauer, Kaylei Koschman (11 goals last year) and keeper Madison Holcombe, as well as junior Maddy Golka (nine goals) comprise the team’s core, and he expects newcomer Tatum Moore and sophomores Kiera McFeron and Kacey Snead to have breakout seasons on offense. 26

Avery Walker began last school year as the head coach for the Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) boys soccer junior varsity team, and finished it as the coach of two teams when he stepped in and took over the girls varsity soccer team midway through the season. But, when it came to choosing which squad to coach this season, it was an easy call for Walker. “The girls won me over,” he says. Walker split the girls duties last year with boys varsity coach Dave Smith after Edwin Acosta resigned for personal reasons following a 6-1-1 start. Walker remembers his first game against River Ridge, when he had former player (L.-r.) Savannah Yoder, Taylor Pryor and Kayla Ojeda help make up the Ysa Novak make out the lineup. BULLS BOYS STILL THE TEAM TO BEAT

The Wiregrass Ranch High boys soccer team is expected to rule the local roost again, although Wesley Chapel and Cypress Creek are proving that Wesley Chapel is becoming one of the strongest parts of the Tampa Bay area. The Bulls (27-2-1) are the defending Sunshine Athletic Conference champs and, despite losing 65 percent of its roster from that team, return senior captain Justin Amis, the school’s all-time leading goal scorer with 68. Junior Alec Santiago (11 goals, 8 assists last season) will add some punch to the offense, starting keeper Logan Grace anchors the defense and the Bulls will reload, thanks to a strong junior varsity team. Bulls coach Dave Wilson says to keep an eye on newcomers Colin Bailey, Greyson Canady, Koray Askoy and Andrew Knorowsk. Wesley Chapel High (7-9-1 last season) opened the season with an 8-0 win over Hernando, as junior midfielder George Obregon scored four goals and assisted on three others. First-year coach Paul Bybee says he expects big things from Obregon, who led the team in goals last year with 13, and was

second with 11 assists. Also returning on offense are sophomore forward Josh Lindo (four goals last year), junior midfielder Matt Rivera (seven goals) and junior striker Ayden Roysdon, who had a hat trick in the opener. ‘WRH Girls Soccer’

Continued from Page 26 “I think our backline is going to be really solid this year and, as a goalkeeper, it’s something you always want to have confidence in,” McGahey says. “Our goal is to concede fewer than 10 goals this season.” That would appear to be a reasonable goal, since the Bulls allowed only 12 last year, as McGahey set a school record by allowing just 0.372 goals per game. Offensively, Walker feels he can fill the holes with junior midfielders Ellie Klem, who missed last season with an injury, and Natalia Kaminski, a newcomer. The Bulls also return junior for-

wards Rylee Humphries, the leading returning scorer with 11 goals and nine assists, and Aiya Harrell (eight goals last season), as well as sophomore Emily Erker, who scored the only goal in a 1-0 season-opening win over Mitchell, which is now coached by Costa). Newcomer Bella Maldonado also is expected to make an impact at midfield this season as well. After back-to-back 19-win seasons, the sky may be the limit for the Bulls in 2020-21. Always in the shadow of a boys soccer program that is regarded as a state title contender every year, the girls look ready to step out this season. “I definitely think we’re making a name for ourselves,” Ojeda says. “I think we’re going to keep it going this year.”

If you’ve been waiting for all of those new places to eat to open in Wesley Chapel, your wait is over! Since just about the first of November, no fewer than five new eateries have opened on or just off of State Roads 54 & 56 and on this page and pages 3133, we have sneak previews of all of them, in case there are any you haven’t tried yet. Of Wesley Chapel!

Rock & Brews, located at 26000 S.R. 56, wasn’t yet open when we were invited to a great Family & Friends preview on Halloween night, but it’s definitely open — and rockin’ — now! And, you and your family and friends should definitely go. The place is huge, with plenty of room for socially distanced dining inside and outside and the food is excellent. And, even though Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock group KISS usually attend the Rock & Brews openings (since they’re also part of the chain’s ownership), Wesley Chapel managing partner Scott Paul said that as soon as the two feel safe enough to allow themselves to be surrounded by the swarms of fans who usually greet them at the openings, “their appearance here is on hold. But, rest assured, they will be here!” In the meantime, the new Rock & Brews should definitely be on your must-try list. From a delicious filet, to “sweet heat” chicken and unique bruschetta, the food is obviously fresh and the atmosphere, according to Paul (and yours truly), “is pure Rock & Roll!” Our Rock & Brews already features live music shows on its beautiful covered outdoor patio every Friday and Saturday night. Our favorite dishes after just one visit include the Fabio’s meatballs (below left), which are sitting in creamy polenta, the unique fig & prosciutto flatbread (right), the crispy but tender chicken parmesan (above right), the grilled flat iron steak frites (top) and the perfectly sautéed broccolini (bottom right). For More Than Just Great Sushi... Wanna Know How They Crumbl?

Considering how close Jannah and I live to the spate of new eateries along S.R. 56, especially those located west of the I-75 interchange, we continue to be thrilled with all of the new places to eat that have opened in our area. One of the most exciting for us is the new Zukku-San Sushi Bar & Grill, which has a successful original location in downtown Tampa’s Armature Works (and another in North Carolina). I’m a bigger sushi fan that Jannah is, but we’re both thrilled with everything else our new friend Ferdian and his well-trained crew are bringing to the dinner table, in addition to the huge variety of sushi and sashimi items like the delicious tuna tataki shown top right here. On our second visit the other day, we ordered nothing but appetizers, our favorite of which are the crispy and delicious pork gyoza (pot sticker dumplings, top left). We’re also really psyched about the super-crisp tempura, and Ferdian is happy to allow you to pick your favorites, from whole orders of sweet potato, broccoli and zucchini (above, right) to amazing whole soft shell crab (above right), whole lobster tail and even whole giant squid tempura. Even the steak yakitori appetizer (above) has a uniquely semispicy sauce and the Japanese-style veggie fried rice has bok choy, zucchini and grape tomatoes. Our favorite entrée so far is the chicken teriyaki shown above left, which is served with jasmine rice and perfectly sautéed veggies. The full dinner menu is available at both the sushi bar and the full-liquor bar. For more info about Zukku-San (25916 Sierra Center Blvd., Lutz), visit Zukku-Sushi.com, see the ad on pg. 35 of this issue or call (813) 419-1351. — GN

As only the third location in Florida, the new location of Crumbl Cookies, next to Zukku-San Sushi (story, left), brings unique, delicious and yes, somewhat crumbly, cookies and more to the Wesley Chapel area. This growing franchise, with 128 locations in 27 states, offers a new variety of flavors every week and so far, we’re trying hard not to become addicted to them. But, with amazing new cookie and “Crumbl Cream” ice cream (above) flavors rotating in and out every week, I can’t be held responsible for what happens when you try them. The first day the store opened earlier this month, we not only tried giant versions of each of the four opening-week flavors — (top right, l.-r.) peanut butter, churro, chocolate chip and double chocolate — we found them to be so delicious and different that we decided to also bring a variety of the store’s “Crumbl Minis” to our granddaughter Rosie’s first birthday party — and yes, they were a big hit. The peanut butter cookies are loaded with warm, gooey peanut butter, and the original chocolate chip cookies are packed with tons of equally melty chips. Our favorites, though, were the awesome frosted options — the double chocolate and the churro cookies (truly one of the best cookies I’ve ever tasted), and all of the Crumbls are slightly crisp outside but super-soft inside. In other words, I’m not sure I agree with the name of the place, but these cookies are truly decadent, no matter whether they really “crumbl’ or not. The day we went to press, I also got to sample our Crumbl Cookies store’s salted caramel ice cream, which also comes in a variety of delicioussounding flavors like Buckeye brownie, muddy buddy, raspberry cheesecake and many more. Crumbl Cookies (25922 Sierra Center Blvd., Lutz) is open every day except Sunday. For more info, call (813) 445-6552 or visit CrumblCookies. com and please tell them I sent you! — GN

It’s All About The Water At The... Lunch Menu Available Mon.–Sunday, 11am-4pm Full dinner menu available on request for lunch

Another small (20-store), but growing chain is the Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., which literally opened in the plaza just west of the intersection of S.R. 54 (aka Wesley Chapel Blvd.) & I-75 the day we went to press with this issue — and it looks to be the New York-style breakfast (and lunch) place people in our area have been hoping would open here for a long time. Local franchise owner Daniel Kurland says the key to everything made fresh at the Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. is the “Brooklynized in Wesley Chapel” water (bottom left photo), which is a filtration and mineral-adding system that makes our local water taste much better. “We even use this great-tasting Brooklynized water in our soda machine and coffee,” Kurland says. “Come on in and taste it for yourself!” All I can say, after its first day in business, is that the bagels are “legit” and kettle-boiled before they area baked, and the bacon, egg & cheese (top right, with a seeded “Black Russian” bagel) and Nova Scotia salmon (right) bagel sandwiches definitely taste authentic, the omelets (center) are huge and fluffy (and served with crisp hash brown “cakes”) and the selection of hot and cold coffee is amazing! Try the “Brooklyn Infusion,” which combines vanilla, caramel and Kahlua flavors. There’s even a coffeeflavored ice cube dispenser for you iced coffee fans! The Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. (27835 WC Blvd., # 101) is open every day, 6 a.m.-3 p.m. For more info, visit BrooklynWaterBagel.com or call (813) 775-2275 — GN

Smoke-Free Karaoke, Pool Tables & More? I’m not bragging, but I have spent time in every bar that has opened in the Pinebrook at The Grove plaza on C.R. (aka S.R.) 54. I remember the original Fatheads Pub, Skinny’s Sports Bar and of course, our long-time advertiser, Joe Whiskey’s Sports Bar. The only reason Jannah and I, until now, haven’t spent more time at Joe Whiskey’s is because it has always been a smokerfriendly bar inside. Well, when bars were allowed to reopen during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic a couple of months ago (under Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order), Joe Whiskey’s reopened as a smoke-free bar with a covered outdoor patio (far right photo) for those who still want to smoke. Inside, Joe Whiskey’s is now smokefree, for those of us who want to shoot pool, sing karaoke (with karaoke jock Allan Hudson Brady, photo right), play darts or video arcade games and/or watch football (or hockey) games while enjoying a drink at the premium, full-liquor bar with great prices (and with Jessica, one of our favorite bartenders, photo above) — without the thrill of having to breathe in second-hand smoke. Allan has a great karaoke list and he’s currently there every Thur.-Sat. evening. Joe Whiskey’s (27429 C.R. 54) is open noon-2 a.m. every day. ‘Making Our Move!’ Continued from pg. 3 Why Is This Hauler Smiling?

Next, I definitely needed a good junk guy to get rid of...well, everything that wasn’t coming to the new office that wasn’t able to be shredded. And believe me, that was a lot of stuff. We had several old filing cabinets filled with old advertising agreements, office furniture that wasn’t going to be needed in the new office, a safe, and a whole lot more. And, it just so happened that our old friend Don Smith — also known as The Happy Hauler — of Smith’s Clean-Up Service (top left photo) had just started back up advertising with us again. Don’s another hard-working man. I stuffed lots of large, contractor-sized bags of garbage and he carried those bags — and the aforementioned filing cabinets and other garbage — to his waiting trailer and loaded all of it by himself. Don told me that when he receives items he believes will be useful to local charities — like The Children’s Home Foundation of Tampa or the Sunrise of Pasco Hospice — he’ll set those aside and drive them to the organizations. He told me our filing cabinets, the safe and some of the furniture might be useful to those charities. Best of all, he was done in less than an hour and his rates are extremely reasonable. So, for everything from single item pick-ups to yard waste, construction debris, small building tear-downs and yes, office (or home) clean-outs, see the ad on page 36 of this issue and call Don at Smith’s Clean-Up Service at (813) 727-6655. Be sure to tell him that Gary from the Neighborhood News sent you!

chose the company that’s been cleaning our office at the last three or four of our locations and the last (at least) 10-15 years — D Ultra Cleaning Services. My friends Eduardo and Deborah Ferreira of D Ultra have always been reliable and although some of their cleaning folks don’t speak much English, Eduardo and Deborah are both bilingual in English and Spanish and anytime I’ve had an issue over the years, they’ve always taken care of it right away. They’re good people who also do grout/ceramic cleaning, pressure washing, carpet and window cleaning and house and light commercial cleaning. Call D Ultra Cleaning Services at (813) 758-9710 , visit DUltraCleaningService.com or see the ad on page 36 of this issue. Because both jobs were so big and I had limited time to get them both done, I decided to let my other friend Celly De Freitas of Clean-it (at right in photo below, which was not taken at our new office, by the way) take on the job of getting our new office sparkling clean before we moved into it. Celly came with her outstanding

Who’s Gonna Clean This Mess?

Another aspect of moving out of one office and into another is that the place you’re leaving has to be broom-clean and even though the place you’re moving to should also be broom clean, I wanted both offices to be as clean as possible. For our “move-out” clean-up, I

crew and in less than two hours, made the new office ready for primetime — or at least for us moving in. Clean-it has other excellent references, is licensed and insured and also has been cleaning homes and offices in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel for nearly 20 years. Call (813) 505-0431 for a free quote today or see the ad on page 37 of this issue for more information.

What I Really Need Is A Nerd!

I don’t know about your business, but our office has to have working computers and I still don’t know the difference between a server and a network and had no idea how to make sure we would be able to safely move all of our desktop computers to the new office. So, I called my friend Michael Varnadore, the owner of Nerds To Go Computer Service of New Tampa (photo top right), which has a brick-andmortar location in the Pebble Creek Collection (behind Kobé Steakhouse; one of our former offices was in the same plaza). I have had a service agreement with the New Tampa Nerds to Go for over a year, but I never felt as fortunate to have it as I did as we got ready to move. Mike said to me, “Gary, this is why you hired us. We’ve got you covered,” and dispatched his newest Nerd, Derik Jenkins, to our old office a few days before our move. Derik came to see how things were connected to make sure that we

could move the whole shebang safely, and when he came back, he got it disconnected, reconnected and up and running — and we literally never missed a beat. If this kind of peace of mind is important to you, you should definitely visit Nerds To Go at 19651 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Ste C-6, or call Mike’s awesome sidekick, Maxine, at (813) 321-1700. Or, visit NerdsTo Go.com. Also, check out the ad on pg. 19 of this issue for a great Black Friday special on an Acer Aspire TC-865 Desktop PC and other deals. So, there you have it. Our new office is in the Westbrook Professional Park at 28949 S.R. 54, Wesley Chapel 33543. As soon as we get everything put away, we’ll host an Open House/party to show off our new digs. In the meantime, listed below are all five of our previous offices: 1. Gerry Mann Financial Building (11201 N. 56th St., Temple Terrace) 2. Palm Plaza (12108 N. 56th St., Tampa/Temple Terrace) 3. Pebble Creek Collection (19651 BBD Blvd., New Tampa) 4. Shoppes at Amberly (15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa Palms) 5. Brookside Prof. Park (29157 Chapel Park Dr., Suite B, Wesley Chapel) Thanks again to all of our advertisers and friends who helped get us moved in quickly, cleanly and safely.
