Weatherford Is Pasco’s 1st Speaker Of The Florida House In A Century! By Matt Wiley After years of serving as the face of the Wesley Chapel area in Florida’s House of Representatives, State Rep. Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel) has officially been sworn in as the next Speaker of the Florida House. For six years, Speaker Weatherford, 32, has represented Wesley Chapel in Tallahassee and most recently headed up the House Redistricting Committee, which worked to redraw Florida’s voting Districts for the House, Senate and U.S. Congressional seats prior to the 2012 Presidential Election . The House voted unanimously for Weatherford, a Brookside resident, to be the next Speaker of the House, succeeding District 35 Rep. Dean Cannon (R-Winter Park) and becoming the first Speaker of the House from Pasco County in more than 100 years. “It’s a great opportunity,” Weatherford says. “We have a lot of work to do and there are a lot of challenges

down the road. There’s no time for a victory lap.” He says that as State House Speaker, Wesley Chapel really will have a voice in Tallahassee. “We’ve had a voice since I’ve been in the Legislature,” he explains. “But, now I get a microphone. I hope that I make the community proud.” He says that there are many priorities over the next two years, including campaign finance reform and, especially, education. “I really want the Legislature to work toward making Florida’s education system the strongest in the country,” he explains. “But, it’s not going to happen over night.” The 2013 Legislative Session won’t begin until March 5, but legislative committees are already beginning to meet, and will continue to meet through January and February. “That’s where a lot of ideas get tossed around,” Weatherford says. “With 120 members in the House,

there’s an opportunity for a lot of ideas. We have to harness the good ones. Things are going to move pretty quickly once the session gets going.” On November 20, Weatherford was officially sworn in as the new Speaker of the House in the House

Daniel Toner said that deputies searched for Losacano extensively, using data banks and records, as well as a land search of the entire Wesley Chapel area, using mounted deputies and ATVs. Two hunters discovered Losacano’s skeletal remains on November 15 in a wooded area across from Wesley Chapel Mini Storage, located at

The human remains found in a wooded area of Wesley Chapel have been identified as those of Linda Losacano, a Wesley Chapel woman who has been missing since May. During a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) press conference on November 19, Sheriff Chris Nocco announced that Losacano had finally been found and that her next of kin

had been notified. “It’s not over yet,” said Nocco. “We can confirm that we have her, and she will be given a proper burial. But, at the same time, we do not (yet) know how she died. That’s still part of the investigation.” Nocco says that Timothy Dean Arnold, Losacano’s long-time boyfriend, is the lead suspect, although he, too, is deceased. Arnold committed

The Wesley Chapel Rotary Is More Than Just ‘Service Above Self’ by Gary Nager Even though I’m a Charter member of the “Rotary Club of New Tampa Noon,” which meets at the same time as one of the two Wesley Chapel-based Rotary Clubs, I came to the realization a couple of weeks ago that I had only attended one meeting of either of the two Wesley Chapel clubs. And, that was a meeting of the Wesley Chapel Sunrise Rotary and it was at least three or four (or maybe more years ago). But, whether I belong to another Rotary Club or not, I still feel as though I should have spent at least a little more time with these two very diverse groups of local business people (and a few retirees), so I decided to attend at least one meeting of each club and tell you a little about each in these pages. So, since I had never yet attended a Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary meeting... and since the newer of the two Wesley Chapel clubs is now meeting Wednesdays at noon at the new Ciao! Italian Bistro (which has replaced Pagelli`s) at the Shops at Wiregrass mall, I figured I’d start there. You folks know how much I love checking out the new restaurants in our area and I really wanted to see what kind of spread Ciao! puts out for Rotary. And so far, I haven’t been disappointed with the yummy food at Ciao! at all. For those who don’t know, Rotary International is the world’s oldest and largest service organization, with millions of members in literally hundreds of countries. Rotary is the organization that has played the leading role in the nearly worldwide eradication of polio and the organization’s mantra is “Service Above Self.” The two Wesley Chapel clubs are both in Rotary District 6950, which includes the

clubs in Citrus, Hernando, Pinellas and Pasco counties. Every club gives money back to Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation, as well as to recipients the clubs choose for themselves. For example, at the meeting I attended, which featured an awesome guest speaker who takes people skydiving at Mt. Everest, of all places, club president Greg Lenners of the Shops at Wiregrass mall passed around the holiday “wish lists” of about 30 children in need who attend Seven Oaks and Veterans Elementaries in Wesley Chapel. The club members were invited to select one or more of those children to purchase the toys and gifts they asked for. “People think, when you live in a relatively affluent area, that there aren’t many kids who won’t have a merry Christmas without a little help,” Lenners said to the 40+ members in attendance of the 54member club, many of whom signed up to help whole families or more than one child on the list. “But sadly, there are, so I know you’ll want to help.” And, considering that many of these kids were only asking for fairly low-cost items like Legos and even clean socks, the club members — a group of local business leaders, including several I’ve known for several years — it was easy for me to get caught up in the fellowship of these dedicated people. And, I can assure you that whether a club has 100 members or less than 20, you get the same feeling at virtually any Rotary meeting you attend. The meetings — and there are clubs that meet for breakfast and even after work, too — usually also feature great speakers (the week after I first visited, the Wesley Chapel Noon club’s guest was a polio survivor), “Happy Dollars” or “Brag Bucks,” where members and guests fork up some cash to help the club and its causes in exchange for being able to brag about everything from their kids to awards they’ve won or just to acknowledge beautiful weather), networking and more. And, here in Wesley Chapel, you have two great clubs from which to choose. I will visit another Wesley Chapel

Sunrise Rotary meeting on an upcoming Friday at 7:15 a.m., at the newly revamped Quail Hollow Country Club and update you on both clubs a little more often in the future. See the Community Calendar on page 10 of this issue for contact information about both Wesley Chapel clubs.

FHWC Opens New Wing; Wellness Center Public Event Jan. 6! By Matt Wiley It has been open since October, but the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has only recently begun operating at its full capacity. The 83-bed facility, located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just north of S.R. 56, initially opened with only one of its in-patient wings in use, but finally was busy enough to open its second wing on November 26. Director of public relations Tracy Clouser says that FHWC was waiting for the number of patients to increase to justify the opening of the hospital’s second wing. “We’ve been very busy since we opened,” she says. “We’ve had a steady flow of patients, but it still took a little time for the number of patients to outnumber the amount of beds we had available.” Clouser says that the hospital has received a large amount of positive feedback from the community since opening on October 1. “A lot of (the feedback) has been about the environment inside the hospital,” she explains. “People seem to really enjoy how soothing it is. We’ve

4

also had a lot of positive comments on the ambient technology in the emergency rooms suites. And, of course, about the staff.” Ambient lighting, which patients can change the color of, is used as a tool in emergency room suites to help soothe patients before and after procedures. Children can choose between different animated themes that are projected and played on the walls. Clouser says that people have continually pointed out that, unlike many other hospitals they may have visited, at FHWC, they don’t feel like a number. The hospital, although now open at its full current capacity, was designed with room to eventually add on two more wings, for an ultimate total of 291 beds.

The drama of the 2012 election season may be over and all of the winners have been announced, but official results have only recently become available for Pasco County. Wesley Chapel voters came out in strong numbers, with nearly 30,000 ballots cast and a 72.7 percent voter turnout, which was higher than the county turnout of 69.47 percent. And, although Barack Obama was reelected as President of the United States, Wesley Chapel was nearly split down the middle, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney actually winning 50 percent of the

vote to Obama’s 48 percent in the Wesley Chapel area’s 12 voting precincts. The Republican nominee won Pasco County with an even larger margin, with more than 52 percent of the vote to the President’s 45 percent. Wesley Chapel precincts also voted almost overwhelmingly with the county to renew the Penny for Pasco—which was set to expire at the end of 2014—with 68 percent voting to renew and only 26 percent voting to let it expire as originally planned. The county voted to renew with more than 70 percent approval. - MW

“Weatherford” Continued from page 1 speech, detailing Florida’s unemployment, real estate, welfare and education issues. “These are problems that we can not afford to ignore.” Weatherford also pointed out that the presidential election is over, so, to him, wishing for the President or Congress to fail is the same as wishing for America to fail. “We are not here to serve as passive brokers for the special interest groups,” he said. “We are here to be the chamber of ideas and solutions. We are also here to govern and to offer bold, transformational ideas. Every member of this Chamber has a personal responsibility to learn, to know and to understand these issues so that we may be knowledgeable brokers of lasting solutions.” Weatherford also addressed the issue of bipartisanship, stressing that regardless of their political parties, all State House members will be treated

with fairness and respect. “On this matter, you can expect my future actions to match my prior years of bipartisanship,” he explained, adding that no one in the House is considered an enemy due to their party affiliation. “Our enemies are unemployment, poverty, illiteracy, broken systems, broken government and burdensome regulation,” he said. “These are the enemies that are wreaking havoc on our people and on our state.” Speaker Weatherford closed his speech by stressing that two years (the term for a state representative, is a short time, but that much can still be done for the State in that timeframe. “Our time is short,” he said. “The clock is ticking. Let us make the most of every single second. There are people counting on us. I am counting on (my fellow Representatives). So that when that clock runs out, may it be said of us that we were bold, we served with a purpose and we fulfilled our promise to Florida.”

Shops At Wiregrass Mall Shatters Previous Black Friday Records By Matt Wiley Love it or hate it, “Black Friday” is a fairly new American tradition that reminds us all that Christmas is right around the corner. There are always special Day-After-Thanksgiving deals to be had, but also sacrifices to be made, in order to walk out the door with that special big-ticket item for that killer price. The dust from Friday, November 23, has since settled at the Shops at Wiregrass mall on S.R. 56, but one thing is certain: this year has been the mall’s biggest so far for Black Friday. Among the mall’s stores, Jos. A. Bank Clothiers and White House/ Black Market even took part in the controversial trend of opening on Thanksgiving night, while 13 other Wiregrass stores — including Bath & Body Works, Charlotte Russe, Hollister, Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret — opened just a few hours later, at midnight, many to lines already wrapped around the buildings. “Black Friday traffic was up 45 percent from last year,” says Debbie Detweiler, director of marketing for

shoppers. Maps were even printed out to let customers know which stores would be open at what time(s). “It’s been a great holiday season so far,” says Detweiler. “If Black Friday and the past few weeks have been any indication, it’s going to be a huge year for our retailers’ holiday sales.” For more information about what’s happening at the Shops at Wiregrass mall this holiday season, including store hours and all of the great events at the mall, please visit TheShopsAtWiregrass.com.

the crash that closed southbound lanes of I-75 in Wesley Chapel on December 1 and sent several people to local hospitals. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), around 6:30 p.m. December 1, Mona Saint-Juste, 52, of Tampa was traveling south on I-75 in her 1998 Nissan Altima, For unknown reasons, she was stopped in the outside center lane south of the S.R. 56 interchange. Janice Glover, 65, also of Tampa was traveling south in the same lane in her 2009 GMC Yukon. The report says that Glover swerved to the right to avoid a collision, but hit the right rear of SaintJuste’s vehicle. A 2011 Toyota Corolla driven by Patricia Hawkins-Savasta, 50, of Ridge Manor, also was traveling south in the outside center lane and tried to avoid a collision, but struck the left side of Saint-Juste’s vehicle. FHP reports that a 2012 Dodge Charger, driven by 35-year-old Angela Lawson, of Land O’ Lakes was traveling south in the outside lane, but also was unable to avoid colliding with the stopped Altima. Lawson swerved and hit the left rear of the Altima, causing her vehicle to flip onto its roof in the inside and inside center lanes. It also collided with 47-year-old Bert LaFranchi’s 2010 GMC Sierra, separat-

ing the front wheel from his vehicle. All of the drivers were wearing their seatbelts. However, Saint-Juste was transported to Florida Hospital Fletcher in serious condition and Hawkins-Savasta was transported to an unnamed hospital, also in serious condition. Lawson was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition, along with her passenger, a 14-year-old, who was reportedly in critical condition. Alcohol appears to be a factor in Lawson’s collision. FHP says that the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. The accident closed the southbound I-75 lanes for two hours. No other details were available at our press time.

Wesley Chapel Woman Busted In ID Theft Ring

Recent Powerball jackpots have broken records and have the potential to make individuals millionaires over night. The lottery is one way to make “free” money, but one Wesley Chapel woman has gone about it differently— by stealing identities. According to the Associated Press (AP), federal prosecutors charged Tania Henderson, 27, of Wesley Chapel, as being the ringleader of an identity theft ring on November 27. The same day, authorities executed a search warrant at her home, where they found cash,

debit cards and identification information for several people. AP reports that prosecutors have filed a criminal complaint against Henderson, saying that 191 fraudulent tax returns for persons living and dead were filed from a computer in her home, totaling more than $1.5 million, which she was to split with her network of accomplices. Some of those refunds already had been paid.

iPhone App Helps Solve Armed Robbery Case

It’s not every day that an iPhone solves a crime. However, using a popular app on a victim’s device, Pasco County authorities have been able to close the book on an armed robbery that unfolded on November 27 in Tampa Palms and ended in Wesley Chapel. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), a call was received from a unit in the Eagles Point Apartments at Tampa Palms on November 27, reporting an armed robbery. TPD responded with a K-9 unit and air support helicopter that began patrolling the area for the suspects’ black Toyota Avalon. The report says that when the TPD K-9 officer learned that the victim had the “Find My iPhone” application installed on her mobile device, the officer used his own iPhone to locate the

missing phone on S.R. 56, near the I75 interchange. TPD’s chopper located the vehicle at a gas pump at the BP station on S.R. 56, confirmed the license plate number and initiated a felony stop. The suspects were taken into custody and the stolen property, along with the firearm used in the robbery, was found in the car. The victim positively identified the suspects at the scene. Marc-Nally Guerrer, 21, who has no current address, is currently being held at the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center on a $26,000 bond for burglary of an occupied dwelling, simple battery and robbery with a deadly weapon or firearm. Kwmane Brunson, 23, of Tampa, also is being held at the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center for robbery with a deadly weapon, although no bond amount was available. No arrest information was available for Gregori A. Harris, the third suspect, at our press time.

Most recently, on November 9, the Associated Press (AP) reports that Dylan Dougherty, 27, pleaded guilty to taking part in the robbery of more than Dougherty $5,000 from a Valdosta, GA, Certus Bank on August 2, 2011, where he also fired an assault rifle. According to AP, Dougherty could face more than 35 years in prison for the events that unfolded inside the bank: 25 years for the robbery and 10 years to life in prison for the gun

charge. He already has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for several assault charges in Walsenburg, CO, where the siblings were apprehended following a car chase and a shootout with local deputies. Dougherty siblings Ryan, 22, and Lee Grace, 30, already pleaded guilty to the bank robbery charges last month, although AP reports that details of their plea deals were not released. All three members of the so-called “Dougherty Gang” will be sentenced in Georgia on December 17, before facing charges in Pasco County for firing at deputies during a car chase when the trio’scrime spree began.

Third Dougherty Pleads Guilty In Georgia

More than a year after their crime spree that began just east of Wesley Chapel and ended in Colorado, the Dougherty siblings are slowly making their way back across the country, answering for their crimes in the numerous states in which they were committed.

Say ‘Yes To The Dress’ At The Fancy Frock! By Camille Gillies If you’ve ever had to shop for a bridal gown in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, you know your choices were nearly nil – until now. Thanks to the recent premiere of Wesley Chapel’s first bridal and formal wear shop, you can kiss that shopping trip to South Tampa, St. Petersburg or Brooksville goodbye. The new shop, dubbed “The Fancy Frock,” is the brainchild of local resident Jennifer Smith, who in August opened the boutique, located in the Redfern Professional Plaz behind Dunkin Donuts in Seven Oaks, off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. The Fancy Frock features a varied assortment of wedding gowns and formal wear, including ball gowns, pageant dresses, prom and homecoming dresses, upscale cocktail and party attire and even men’s tuxedos and accessories. Although the shop anchors one end of a cluster of medical and professional offices and breaks the traditional retail shopping mold with its office park locale, The Fancy Frock isn’t too difficult to find, offers two spacious rooms replete with off-the-rack and custom gowns and boasts a comfortable, helpful and low-pressure atmosphere. “Customers are always welcome to come in and browse or they can make an appointment for more personal, one-

on-one service,” Jen says. One complete room of the boutique features designer bridal gowns, while another is dedicated to other formal gowns and even cocktail dresses. An enormous dressing suite – the kind of well-lit and fully mirrored kind required when making a nail-biting, once-in-alifetime (hopefully) wedding gown purchase – is available, as well as a pleasant sitting room for the usual critics...ahem, friends and relatives...the bride might bring along for moral support. Most designer wedding gowns are notoriously expensive, but these bridal gowns won’t break the bank. Ranging from $300 to $2,000, the majority of Jen’s gowns are priced under $1,000 and include such well-known designers as Anjolique, Mia Solano, Jasmine, Demitrios, Mon Cheri, Dolly Pearl, Nina Canacci, Christina Wu and Jordan. “I love to shop but I don’t like to pay full retail,” Jen says, who is proud to offer high-quality dresses that are more affordable, thanks to her own savvy shopping know-how. She says her prices are reasonable because she purchases dresses that may have been samples or their style numbers were discontinued, but all merchandise at The Fancy Frock is brand new and top of the line. “I also buy from wholesale distributors and bridal shop owners who want to turn over their inventory,” she contin-

ues. “They sell at a deep discount, and I pass that savings on to my customers.” She says similar shops in northern states, many as far north as Michigan, stock heavier gowns at this time of year, so they are anxious to move gowns made of lighter fabrics. As Floridians know well, those light fabrics are Seven Oaks resident Jennifer Smith of The Fancy appealing year-round in Frock off BBD Blvd. in Seven Oaks can help dress up our warm climate, the bride and the groom at your wedding. prompting Jen to purwhat at each high school. Jen also offers a line of custom accessories that includes hair clips, sashes, headbands and tiaras. She creates all of the pieces herself, a hobby she began as a creative outlet from teaching. In fact, some New Tampa residents may know Jen from her days as a teacher at Hunter’s Green Elementary. With a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in special education, both from nearby St. Leo University near Dade

City, Jen spent the past 10 years as a teacher in Hernando and Hillsborough counties, but wanted to start her own business and exercise more of her creativity. Four years ago, she began toying with the idea of opening a formal wear shop, but with the recession in full swing, the timing wasn’t right. “But, right now, everything seems to have fallen into place,” she says. “Look at all of the growth and businesses popping up again along BBD. I knew this was the time. I am located right across from the new Florida Hospital and just a minute or two north of the Wiregrass mall. It’s a great place to be.” Jen adds that her research shows that Pasco County has a high number of professional, college-educated women who have never been married, a demographic ideally suited for her business. Coincidentally, Jen is a newlywed who resides in Seven Oaks (only seconds away from the shop) with her husband, Rob James, and their blended family consisting of children, Emily, 19; Granger, 12; and Isabella, 6. “I really hope that people will stop by The Fancy Frock to see what I have to offer,” she says. “Every dress is handselected and I have something for all age groups, from teens to seniors.” Wesley Chapel resident Stephanie Peters found this out first hand during her visit to the Fancy Frock. Stephanie says she recently purchased semi-formal dresses for herself and her two daugh-

ters, ages 12 and 14. “We were shopping for dresses for a Bat Mitzvah ceremony, and Jen told me she had the perfect dress coming in for me,” Stephanie says. “It was just the color and style I was looking for." She also says that the store has an excellent selection, and her young daughters were both equally pleased with their special dresses. “I’d definitely recommend her shop,” Stephanie says. “You can’t beat her prices." The Fancy Frock is offering a Grand Opening/Holiday sale featuring 20-percent-off all in-stock formal and bridal gowns. Jen also invites you to take advantage of her “secret envelope” pro-

motion, in which customers, upon entering the store, receive an envelope containing special discount coupons. The Fancy Frock is located at 3737 Maryweather Ln. in the Redfern Professional Plaza and is open Tuesday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The store is closed on Sundays and open on Mondays by appointment only. Jen stresses that her goal is to accommodate her customers, so store hours are flexible and she welcomes evening appointments. For more information, including how the “secret envelope” promotion works, call the Fancy Frock at 9731999 or visit their Facebook page.

Seven Oaks Pet Hospital Specializes In Overall Pet Wellness By Matt Wiley There are few things more difficult to watch than a suffering family dog or cat. However, there sometimes is a solution, and the first step is taking that family pet to Seven Oaks Pet Hospital in Wesley Chapel, where helping get pets back on their “paws”– and helping them stay healthy– is the name of the game. Seven Oaks Pet Hospital, located on S.R. 56 between I-75 and Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in the Cypressview Square shopping plaza, is a full-service veterinary medical facility offering everything from anesthesia-free dental work and laparoscopic surgery (or surgery using a small incision and a camera to see inside an animal’s body), to acupuncture and holistic medicine for every family’s four-legged friends. The hospital prides itself not only on its customer service, but also on its patient care and focus on overall pet wellness. Seven Oaks Pet Hospital’s reputation precedes itself, thanks largely to the work of Dr. Sree Reddy, DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), who has been a practicing veterinarian for more than a decade. Dr. Reddy graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in India in 1997, before moving to the U.S. and earning his Master’s degree in veterinary

16

microbiology from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, AL. After working as a vet in Ames, IA, and in Clearwater, Dr. Reddy opened Seven Oaks Pet Hospital in 2007, where he currently specializes in laparoscopic and bone surgery and acupuncture, taking a more herbal and holistic approach to pet medicine than most vets. “This isn’t a profession to me,” Reddy explains. “This is my life. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.” Reddy is so dedicated to his fourlegged patients, in fact, that he, personally, is on-call 24/7. “I usually work 70-80 hours per week,” he says. “I’m always thinking about my patients, even when I’m at home. If there’s an emergency, no matter what time, day or night, I’m here.” In March, Dr. Reddy welcomed another full-time veterinarian into the fold at Seven Oaks: Dr. Lisa Clifford, DVM. A Hawaii native and University of Hawaii alumnus, Dr. Clifford received her DVM degree from Iowa State University, also in Ames. “It was a bit of a culture-shock,” she says of moving from the Hawaiian islands to the Great Plains. Clifford has been working for Reddy since 2010, but now alternates between three and four days per week at Seven Oaks Pet Hospital.

Together, Drs. Reddy and Clifford take care of pets from all across Tampa Bay, some from as far away as Apollo Beach and St. Petersburg. “Most of our clients hear about us from other clients,” explains Reddy. “We’ve had between 25to-30-percent growth in our client-base in the past year. People just keep coming back.” Dr. Clifford agrees. “It’s more of a personal experience here,” she says. Tampa resident Ken Timmins and Fenway, his mini-dachshund, experienced the wonders of Dr. Reddy’s acupuncture treatment first-hand. Fenway was in intense pain and Timmins feared that he would have to put the dog down, so he brought Fenway to Seven Oaks. Through an X-ray, Reddy determined that Fenway was suffering from a bulging disc and recommended acupuncture. “I was skeptical at first,” Timmins admits, “But, within seven treatments,

Fenway was much better, and he was back to his old self after the ninth treatment. The friendly and experienced staff will help make sure that your pet is well, and continues to stay that way. For more information, please visit SevenOaksPet.VetStreet.com or call 929-4100. A & A Boutique Brings The World Of Fashion To Wesley Chapel! By Matt Wiley New York…Paris…Wesley Chapel? Most ‘fashionistas’ wouldn’t dream of considering the latter a part of the fashion world, but 17-year-old twins Amber and Allie (aka A&A) Malott would disagree with you. The Wesley Chapel residents bring designer pieces straight from the runways of the fashion capitals of the world to their consignment shop, A&A Boutique, which is located on Bruce D. Downs (BBD) Blvd., directly across from Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC). A&A Boutique is a luxury consignment boutique that offers high-end clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories to men and women in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area for prices exponentially cheaper than those that can be found in malls and designer department stores. From Gucci and Chanel to Dior and Louis Vuitton, A&A has something from them all. “We’ve always loved fashion,” says Allie. “Even as little kids, we always had fun mixing and matching clothes and dressing up.” Today, the twins are completely immersed in the fashion showcase that they have created at A&A, holding fashion shows right in the store that

20

showcase the consignment items they sell in the store and even involve their attending customers and friends as models. “We wanted to open a business in our own community,” the twins’ mother, Lori, explains. “We saw no luxury boutiques in Wesley Chapel, so we decided to open our own. The goal is to have the girls’ designs in the store.” Lori says she had always wanted to open a boutique for her daughters to showcase their own designs, which could launch at A&A Boutique as early as next year. “Lots of people told us not to open a fashion consignment shop,” Lori says. “They said that there was no luxury market and we’d be lucky to be open for more than a month. That was four months ago.” Allie, Amber and Lori, who live in the Quail Hollow neighborhood of Wesley Chapel, run the entire business. Amber takes care of authenticating products and works on the website, while Allie helps customers try on clothes and takes care of the shop’s Facebook page, adding pictures of new products and constantly updating new products from consigners added into the store’s system. Lori takes care of the bills, she says.

Real Designer Labels For Less A&A is the place to go for highend fashion brand name shoes, clothes, handbags and accessories, but not just for customers, who can find products at prices from 50-90 percent below those found at the “mall stores.” “When consigners bring us products, especially if the pieces still have the ‘new’ tags, we price them at 50-percent-off the retail price,” Amber says. Those same consigners also can look forward to making anywhere from 50-80 percent back on the products they bring in to A&A to sell. So it’s a win-win, both for customers and consigners. (L. to r.) Allie, Lori and Amber Malott What sets A&A apart is each of A&A Boutique on Bruce B. We don’t want our customers to buy something that doesn’t look good on them.” Amy Bledsoe Baldwin of Riverview says the system works. “I love A&A Boutique!” she says. “I always find the cutest clothes for the best price. Plus, I love the owners. They’re sweet and knowledgeable, and never pushy.” Another thing that sets A & A apart from other boutiques is that the shop carries actual runway pieces from

fashion capitals like France and Denmark. A window display outside the shop showcases a picture of a model walking down a fashion runway, wearing clothing from Noir — a designer that can only be found in Europe. The mannequin current;y in A&A’s window is wearing that same exact outfit. Allie says that many of the brands that A&A carries can only be found at International Plaza near the Tampa International Airport, a long drive from Wesley Chapel. “They can drive all the way there,

or they can come here and get it for half the price or cheaper,” says Amber. A&A isn’t all about selling clothing, either. The boutique also puts on fashion shows for the community, donating proceeds to a good cause. For example, the shop recently put on a fashion show to benefit the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Foundation that included a runway, or “blue carpet,” as the girls decided to call it. Friends and customers were able to

dress up in several pieces that were for sale and model them for all those who attended. The event raised more than $500 for the Foundation. A&A also has participated in “Shoes for the Cure” during the recent fifth annual “Fashion Week Tampa Bay in Ybor City, as well as “Peace Couture” on November 9, a fashion event that benefited The Spring of Tampa Bay, a domestic violence shelter for battered women and their families. A&A also recently shipped three boxes of cold weather clothes, toiletries, cleaning supplies and batteries to a fellow consigner in New York City to distribute to victims of Superstorm Sandy. After only four months, A&A already is making Wesley Chapel a more fashionable place to shop. The only downfall of running a consignment boutique with the word “luxury” in the name, Lori says, is that it sometimes scares customers away. “People see the word ‘luxury’ and they automatically assume that the clothes we sell are going to be way out of their price range,” she explains. “That’s really not the case at all with us at A &A Boutique.” Don’t believe her? Stop in to see A&A Boutique (2653 BBD Blvd., Suite 108) for yourself, visit Facebook.com/AABoutiqueLLC or call 528-8765.

Wesley Chapel Chamber Falls Short In First-Ever ‘Softball Classic’ By Gary Nager Photos by OurTownFLA.com Although it had been close to 20 years since I played any softball at all, I decided to risk re-injuring my surgically repaired knees to participate in the first-ever “Softball Classic” between the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce and the Central Pasco Chamber on December 2. The game was a blast and I didn’t the Pasco County Clerk of the Circuit Court/ Comp- hear of any major “weekend warrior” injuries after the troller, who threw a complete game, had a couple of game ended. We’ll get ‘em next time!

Mystery Monkey Of Tampa Can Run Wild In Dade City By Matt Wiley After spending four years running from the “law,” a fugitive is behind bars, but it’s not the kind of fugitive that probably springs instantly to mind. “Cornelius,” the “Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay,” was moved into his new home at Dade City’s Wild Things (just a few miles north of Wesley Chapel) on December 3, after evading trappers around the Tampa Bay area for more than four years. From Clearwater to Temple Terrace, Dunedin to Pinellas Point, Cornelius has taken wildlife rescuer Vernon Yates on quite a wild ride. “He’s a very intelligent animal,” says Yates, who also is the founder and director of Seminole-based Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. “It got to the point where he’d actually recognize my truck. He’d be sitting in a tree and as soon as he’d see me pull up, he’d take off.” Yates explains that Cornelius could have been caught much sooner, as he has been able to hit the monkey with tranquilizer darts numerous times. However, Cornelius would run up into a tree before falling asleep. Yates says that knocking on someone’s door and trying to explain to that person that he’d just shot a monkey that ran into

24

Petersburg on October 24, Cornelius has been in Yates’ custody at his wildlife refuge until a proper home was found, which Yates determined to be Dade City’s Wild Things, the 22-acre zoo that is home to more than 250 animals, including several other species of macaque. “It’s been a four-year ordeal and people kept asking me what I would do with the monkey when I finally caught him,” explains Yates. “I just wanted someone who could give him a good home and didn’t want him just for the publicity. There was another facility in Lakeland that was interested, but they since Cornelius the “Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay,” backed out, so I decided on Wild peeks out of his new home at Dade City’s Wild Things.” Things, just a few miles north of Wesley Chapel. Cornelius’ new home isn’t too shabby, either. He currently their backyard usually gave Cornelius lives alone in a 14 ft. x 14 ft. cage made enough time to escape. During the past four years, Yates explains, the rhesus macaque monkey has used his intelligence to avoid both capture and the deadly mistakes that many other less intelligent animals commonly make, such as making contact with power lines or trying to cross cross busy intersections. Since his capture in south St.

of 9-guage chain link on a cement slab, shielded by a glass pane – a health requirement since Cornelius was diagnosed with being infected with the herpes B virus following his capture. His cage also features swings, a small, heated house and a feeding station. After 30 days, other macaques will be introduced into his environment. “He’s adjusting pretty well,” says Wild Things director Kathy Stearns. “At first he explored everything and ate some food from a high spot in the cage. He seems comfortable. Curious, but comfortable.” Dade City’s Wild Things, located at 37245 Meridian Ave. in Dade City, is currently setting up a “Mystery Monkey Fan Club” to help raise funds to pay for the maintenance of Cornelius’ new cage. Wesley Chapel Rotary’s 3rd Annual ‘Turkey Gobble’ Feeds Hundreds By Matt Wiley Thanksgiving is a time of year when friends and families take time to get together and be thankful for each other and all that they have. It’s a time of year when it can be easy to forget that there are those who don’t have a family to go home and share a nice traditional Thanksgiving meal with, and there also are those in our area without even a home to go to. It is for that reason that the Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary Club (see page 3) teamed up with Atonement Lutheran Church’s Helping Hands Pantry and Metropolitan Ministries to put on the club’s third annual “Turkey Gobble” to help feed the hungry, needy and homeless on

Thanksgiving Day. Thanks to more than 50 volunteers, the “Gobble” was able to provide Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings to more than 200 people, both at Atonement, located on S.R. 54, but also around the community between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. “People probably came from as far as three miles for a meal,” says Wesley Chapel Rotary president Greg Lenners, who also is the general manager of the Shops at Wiregrass mall. “We even had some volunteers take some meals to the Quail Hollow area, where there are some people living in the woods.” Lenners says that a location change might have affected how many people came out for a meal, as the event had been held at the Wesley Chapel Dairy Queen, also located on S.R. 54, for the past two years. “Last year, we served more than 350 (meals),”

Lenners says. “So, we served a little less this year, but he event was still a big success.” Meals consisted of all the traditional Thanksgiving favorites, including turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy, vegetables, dinner rolls and, of course, pie. “We definitely plan to keep the tradition going,” Lenners says. “Of course, we don’t want the event to grow. If anything, we want it to be smaller because that would mean that

there are fewer people in need in the area, but we’re here to help as many people as we can.” For more information about Atonement Lutheran’s Helping Hands Food Pantry, please call 973-2211, or, for Metropolitan Ministries, please call 209-1000 or visit MetroMin.org. For the Wesley Chapel Rotary, which meets Wednesdays at noon at Ciao! Italian Bistro in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, call 862-8989 or 391-3895.

Taste of Boston — A Taste That’s Not Just For New Englanders! By Gary Nager When you meet George Illes, the owner of the Taste of Boston restaurant, located in the Shoppes of New Tampa plaza, directly across S.R. 56 from the Shops at Wiregrass mall, you definitely wouldn’t think he was from Boston — or any part of New England, for that matter. Although he spent about 15 years in Hampton Beach, NH — where he owned everything from a bagel shop to an ice cream-and-gyro place, George still has the heavy accent of his native Hungary, but he also has retained the ability to create authentic New England-style seafood that has transplanted “Yankees” from Massachusetts and Rhode Island coming back again and again. “When you call yourself ‘Taste of Boston,’ you’d better keep your New Englanders happy,” George says. “If they don’t taste what they remember from before they moved here, they’ll never come back again...and they’ll tell their friends to avoid your place, too.” That’s not a problem at Taste of Boston, which attracts a sizable crowd for lunch and dinner virtually every day. His customers are a nice mix of former northeasterners and locals who enjoy everything from authentic New England clam chowder to “whole belly” fried clams to a self-proclaimed “Best Outside of Philly” cheesesteak sandwich. All I can say is that everything I’ve sampled at Taste of Boston, which was

actually George’s second Tampa Bay location when he opened here in April 2010 (he sold his South Tampa restaurant last year), has been fresh and delicious. I love the “chowda,” as well as the delicious grilled or blackened basa (a freshwater fish that is much tastier than tilapia) and even the fried haddock — a guilty pleasure of mine, even though I usually avoid fried seafood. So, in order to get a take on some of George’s other great tastes, I treated my staff to get the word on their favorites. Graphic artist Porsha Lemos raved about Taste of Boston’s lobster roll sandwich , which is served with a cup of zesty lobster bisque, too. On another visit, Porsha also said that Taste of Boston’s fried “whole belly” clams were among the sweetest and tastiest she ever tried. Photographer Jayne Baker gave thumbs-up to the authentic Maryland crab cake bites appetizer and the whole steamed lobster. Assistant editor Matt Wiley gobbled his huge crab cake sandwich and I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious ovenbaked sub roll and zesty sauce on Taste of Boston’s tasty, huge chicken parmesan sandwich basket. Taste of Boston also offers a variety of great appetizers, from “kickin’” shrimp (served with a spicy Asian-style sauce), boneless Buffalo and BBQ wings, fried plantains, mushrooms and onion rings and even authentic New England “steamers” (steamed clams), burgers and more. You can even get shrimp scampi over

linguine or linguine with clams. fried or blackened sea or bay scallops and for those who aren’t allergic to shrimp (like I am), there’s baskets of fried, coconut and kickin’ shrimp, too. There’s even baked sea scallop and seafood casserole dinners and all-you-can-eat options available. The baskets are served with fries and cole slaw, or you can upgrade to a “dinner,” with your choice of fresh cole slaw, yellow rice, sweet potato fries, steamed broccoli, yellow rice or BBQ baked beans. Taste of Boston also recently added several rotating flavors of delicious Bruster’s Real Ice Cream and has a variety of decent

wines and draft and bottled beers, including “George’s Boston Brew,” a tasty red. And, although Taste of Boston already can host or cater your holiday party, coming soon is George’s mobile “Chowder Bus,” which he can bring to your location and basically provide most of his menu. Reservations are not required at Taste of Boston (1944 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.), which opens every day at 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner. You can get $3 off your order of $20 or more with the coupon on page 31, or call 994-9797 or visit TasteofBostonFlorida.com.

(Top) The 1-pound+ steamed lobster at Taste of Boston, located in the Shoppes at New Tampa of Wesley Chapel, is a signature New England seafood treat. (Above, l. to r.) Other favorites at Taste of Boston include the New England clam chowder, the lobster roll sandwich and the popular “full-belly” fried clams. All photos on this page by GalleriesbyJayne.com.

Baker’s Gallery—A Year Of Great Cakes, Baking Supplies & Much More! By Gary Nager Alexandra Auguste was born in Haiti but she has been in the U.S. for more than four decades, including more than 30 years in Long Island, NY. More important than where she’s been however, is where she is now...behind the counter at The Baker’s Gallery in the Pebble Creek Collection on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., creating unique cakes, cupcakes, butter rolls and even delicious “pate” pastries from her native country, stuffed with meat, chicken and even codfish — all at great prices! A Wilton-certified baker for more than 20 years, Alexandra and her family — including her cousin Philippe, her son Reginald, her “adopted” son Antonio and her sister Gene (named after the actress Gene Tierney) — bring smiles, knowledge and a lot more experience creating unique wedding and other special occasion cakes than just the one year the store has been open here. “We’ve already created everything from a Monster Truck cake with fondantcovered Rice Krispie treat wheels to cakes topped with a fully edible lady’s shoe and even edible flowers,” Alexandra says. “And really, if you can imagine it, we can probably create it for you. Check our website for a full gallery of our cakes.” I have to say that I like The Baker’s Gallery’s cakes that are a series of cup-

28

cakes standing side-by-side that form a full-sized, custom-designed cakes. Part of the reason is because I love Alexandra’s cupcakes — which are now available in 28 flavors, with new ones being added to the list seemingly every month. If you like chocolate (like I do), The Baker’s Gallery crew has chocolate “delite,” chocolate espresso, Oreo cookie, German chocolate and chocolate-vanilla swirl. You like fruit flavors? The newest addition is pumpkin spice, but Key lime, lemon raspberry, orange apricot, “strawberry-filled strawberry” and about nine other real fruit cupcake options are almost always available in both regular sizes (for just $2.50) and “mini” (a true bargain at $1). And, the funny thing is that Alexandra says she had no intention beforehand of even having cupcakes in the store, but “our customers wanted samples of the different cake flavors we have and ‘gourmet cupcakes’ are really popular these days, so we decided to give gourmet cupcakes at reasonable prices a shot.” I remember that the first week the store was open, The Baker’s Gallery already was up to about six cupcake flavors. Visiting there too often is dangerous diet-wise for a cupcake lover like me, so one or two (never more, lol) mini-Bavarian cream crunch and Confetti cupcakes are a necessity with a cup of The Baker’s Gallery’s yummy by-the-cup coffee.

(L. to r.) Antonio, Gene, Philippe, Reginald & Alexandra invite you to check out the unique cakes, cupcakes, baking supplies and so much more at The Baker’s Gallery, located in the Pebble Creek Collection on BBD Blvd., behind Kobe Steakhouse. I’m also already addicted to the flaky pate pastries, of which Alexandra says the store sells “hundreds a week” and hope to try the butter rolls soon. But, one thing I probably won’t need much of anytime in the near future are the incredible array of cookie cutters, rolling pins and other baking supplies, but only because I refuse to take up baking for fear of ending up looking like a certain boy made out of dough. If you have the baking “gene” or even a desire

to learn, The Baker’s Gallery really is for you. Alexandra says baking classes are coming soon and she’s already doing “design your own cookie/cupcake” parties for kids’ birthdays and school groups. Just go check it out and tell Alexandra and her family that I sent you! To order an amazing custom cake for your holiday party or any special occasion, or for more info, call The Baker’s Gallery (19651 BBD) at 9739966 or visit TheBakersGallery.com.

Here Are The Winners Of Our 2012 Dining Survey & Contest! So, here are this year’s winning restaurants and the names of the readers who won prizes in this year’s biggest-ever Reader Dining Survey & Contest. And, thanks to a lot of (for once) correct ballot-stuffing, we have a few restaurants that really took off this year. We always encourage restaurants to give the forms to their customers, but we always warn them that if they only have one or a couple of restaurants named, those votes will not be counted. Well, the new Full Circle Pizza & Grill’s customers did exactly as instructed, so Full Circle won Your Favorite New NonChain Restaurant, Your Favorite Pizza Place (unseating runner-up La Prima Pizza, which previously had won every year it’s been open) and Your Favorite Sandwich Shop in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel & was named, behind first-time winner, The Olive Garden, as your second Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa. Also named a first-time winner, thanks to lots of loyal customers, is Taste of Boston, your Favorite Restaurant in Wesley Chapel. Don’t forget to check out my annual “Gary’s Favorite Restaurants” in our next issue. Congrats go out to Sandy Elvenia of Lexington Oaks, whose name was drawn at random from our record 600+ entrants to win $100 at the restaurant of her choice. The Latest & Greatest News About Dining, Shopping, Retail & More In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel! By Gary Nager

Firehouse Subs Moves

In case you were wondering what happened to the Firehouse Subs — which used to be located next to Publix in the New Tampa Center on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. — this might get a little confusing. Firehouse is still located next to a Publix on BBD, but it just reopened in the Shoppes of New Tampa at Wesley Chapel, the plaza located across S.R. 56 from the Shops at Wiregrass mall. The proximity to the mall and the major intersection of S.R. 56 of BBD helped the owners decide that a move was in order. Firehouse Subs is now located at 1824 BBD Blvd., between Publix & Bealls. For more info, call 977-3181.

Gerry’s Back At Winners!

Congratulations to Gerry Malynovsky, the original owner of all of the Winners Sports Grills in the Tampa Bay area, who recently took back over the Winners location in at 5429 Village Market, at the corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and S.R. 54. Gerry, who has been primarily in the catering business since selling his three Winners locations (Odessa, Tampa Palms and Wesley Chapel), including handling the in-house catering kitchen at the Pepin Distributing Hospitality Center on N. 50th St. in Tampa, has been busy upgrading the Wesley Chapel Winners’ menu and promises to roll out an entirely new, upgraded menu soon. “We’re going to be adding some great fresh fish options, additional steaks,

32

pastas and daily specials,” he says. “We’re not going to forget that this is still a ‘sports grill,’ we just want to give our customers more choices.” For more info, see the Winners ad on page 31 or call 973-7474.

Shops At Wiregrass Update

The new Ciao! Italian Bistro has opened and is offering a fantastic 20-percent-off your entire bill with the coupon in the ad on page 35. I’ve only had a chance to sample Ciao!’s Italian fare a couple of times since it replaced Pagelli’s in the mall, but I really enjoyed both the parmesan-andpotato-crusted snapper pictured above (served with great homemade mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus, too) and the rigatoni alla Toscana, which features large tube pasta sautéed with Italian sausage, roasted peppers, onion and tomato sauce, topped with garlic-herb Rondele. For more info, call 907-2200 or visit CiaoItalianBistro.com. Also now open in the mall, finally, is Blue Lagoon Island Grill Authentic Caribbean Cuisine. Located next to 900º Woodfired Pizza and featuring everything from authentic Jamaican jerk dishes to fresh fish entrées with mango and other fresh fruit sauces, Blue Lagoon’s menu is unique and everything looks and sounds pretty delicious. Look for an update on Blue Lagoon (9941526, BlueLagoonTampa.com) in a future issue.
