Urban Air Adventure Park Opens! Dear New Tampa Families with Young Kids: You may not have to go to Brandon for all of your birthday parties anymore! On Jan. 25, Urban Air Adventure Park opened in the Market Square at Tampa Palms plaza on Commerce Park Blvd., Filling a pretty significant and long-standing void for those who have families in the New Tampa community. While New Tampa has never lacked for good neighborhoods with community parks, good schools and just enough youth sports programs and restaurants to keep you busy on a weekend, one standard complaint has always been: There’s nowhere to take your kids for fun. Now, there is. “I think this will be a hit,” said assistant general manager Chris Schade, a Live Oak resident. “It’s a great concept, especially for the New Tampa area.” The Dallas-based adventure center is owned by Sarasota businessman Michael Tucci, who says he has a number of relatives that live nearby. He said he was always drawn to the area, and when he decided to buy two franchises, Tampa was a definite destination. “This is a great spot,” Tucci said. “We knew there was nothing else like it in the area and thought it would be the perfect fit.” The indoor attractions feature really cool Flip Zone and Spin Zone bumper cars, a high-wire ropes course, a Sky Rider, a Warrior Course, Battle Beam, dodgeball courts, rock walls, trampolines and areas for younger kids. There are six rooms for hosting parties, food and drink and various pricing plans (Basic to
Ultimate) and park memberships (which can be charged monthly). Schade said he was happy to see a dormant, 28,000-sq.-ft. building that had been closed for a couple of years, after HH Gregg went out of business ,spring back to life. “We feel like we’re helping to revitalize the New Tampa area,” he says. In fact, in 2019, Urban Air announced it was taking over a number of old HH Gregg sites — in Augusta, GA; Akron, OH; Montrose, CO and Wellington, FL, in addition to Tampa Palms, to name a few. It was unofficially announced in September that Urban Air would be opening a New Tampa location, and it only took a few months to renovate and redesign the old HH Gregg before opening. At a preopening VIP event on Jan. 23 that we attended, workers were still hurrying to put on a few final touches. Sarah Tengali, who drew high fives from employees after completing the difficult Warrior Course without falling into the ball pit below, and her son Rocco, rushed from attraction to attraction, laughing and working up a sweat. Sarah’s favorite was the Sky Rider, where riders strap in and twist and turn as they fly above (and all around) the adventure park. Rocco said his favorite was The Wipeout, where you have to jump over or duck under large swinging arms. “Everything,” Rocco said, “is awesome.” Urban Air Adventure Park is located at 6250 Commerce Palms Dr. For more info, visit UrbanAirTrampolinePark.com or call (813) 522-5401. And please be sure to tell Chris and the staff that you read about them on Page 1 of the New Tampa Neighborhood News!

Why Is This Great Clips ‘Advertorial’ On Page 3? To Make A Point! An editorial by Gary Nager Most of the time, when we write what we call Business Feature or Business Spotlight stories, they appear towards the middle of the issue or, occasionally, as a companion piece to my Nibbles & Bytes column (see pages 42-43). However, what has happened with my relatively new advertiser Great Clips Cypress Creek Town Center-Lutz (which I still call Wesley Chapel, despite the Lutz address) drove back to me once again, on the week of my 117th birthday (I know, “You don’t look a day over 105!”), why I’m “still” doing this same job after what will be 26 years at the end of next month. I started going to Great Clips from the time it first opened to get my hair cut because, quite honestly, it was the closest (not to mention most affordable) hair cutting place to where Jannah and I live. But, that was more than a year ago and I’ve still been getting my hair cut at the same Great Clips. Why? Well sure, there’s the convenience thing. But, considering that I’m not getting any younger (sorry, Jannah!) and a decent head of hair is about all I have left going for me, I wanted a place I could afford that wouldn’t make me need “repairs” someplace else two weeks later. The reason why I keep going back to Great Clips also isn’t because they started advertising with me in October or because owner Scott Dixon pays his bills. Scott’s a nice enough guy to work with — and he currently owns five Great Clips salons (including Carrollwood, South Tampa, St. Pete and North Port) — but he’s a CPA by trade and is never going to cut my hair. No, the reason I am a Great Clips Cypress Creek customer is because of Scott’s hair stylist extraordinaire Laverne. Laverne, who has ten years of experience with Great Clips (although she has worked at other salons, too), is a truly professional stylist and amateur therapist (at least for me) who quickly does what you instruct her to do with a smile on her face. She seems to love listening to whatever crazy family stories I have to tell and she always recommends hair products to help keep me looking my best between haircuts without ever pressuring me to buy anything. And, although I’m sure the other stylists at this Great Clips location are all great, too, it was Laverne who was the only stylist at this location when the salon opened and who first recommended to Scott that he give advertising in the Neighborhood News a shot. “Everyone knows Gary,” Laverne told him. “But, not everyone knows we’re here!” And, even though our readers aren’t always big coupon clippers/redeemers, Laverne says the offer in the ad on pg. 20 started bringing in people right away. The issue you’re now reading is only the second New Tampa issue that Scott has advertised in, but Laverne says the number of coupons being redeemed has grown exponentially to where she says, “Somewhere around 40 percent or more of our new customers have come from those Neighborhood News ads.” Scott even started giving the New Tampa market a shot last issue and is discussing having us shoot a Video Business Feature for him, too. I’m excited to see what happens after this story reaches mailboxes in both of our markets. Great Clips Cypress Creek Town Center-Lutz is located at 25700 Sierra Center Blvd. For info, stop in or call (813) 948-9911. Check in online at GreatClips. com and don’t forget to 1) use the coupon from pg. 20 and 2) tell Laverne I sent you! Neighborhood News

The Vice President Brings ‘Keep America Great’ Rally To New Tampa Despite Strong Feelings On Both Ends Of The Political Spectrum, The VP’s Visit Was An Historic Day For New Tampa An editorial by GARY NAGER As someone who has chronicled the news exclusively in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel the last 26 years, I believe Jan. 16 literally was a red-letter date in New Tampa's history. But, based on what I saw that day, those who are either pro-Democrat, antiTrump (or both), didn't seem to agree. Before you try to tell me that I'm nothing but a political shill for any party, candidate or president, consider this: Jan. 16 was the first time that a standing Vice President of the United States and Governor of Florida had ever driven up Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and headed east on Cross Creek Blvd. If Hillary Clinton had defeated Donald Trump in 2016 and Andrew Gillum had defeated Ron De Santis, and it was Tim Kaine and Gillum who brought a political rally to New Tampa, would you have felt differently? I wouldn't. It would still have been my job — and my privilege — to hear what our Vice President and Governor had to say and report that news to you. Some of the 36 people who protested outside the “Keep America Great” rally that brought VP Mike Pence and Gov. De Santis to the Venetian Event Center at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church seemed more concerned about the fact a partisan political rally — free or not — was being held inside a building on church grounds, even if that building technically isn't the church itself.
4
And, the obvious motivating influence for members of both political parties who came out that day was indeed Pres. Donald Trump, who is arguably the most polarizing President in our history, whether you agree with everything — or nothing — he says and does. But, with the crowd inside the building estimated at anywhere from 800-1,000 people for the free rally, it was clear that the vast majority of the people who came out that day — with cars parked along Cross Creek Blvd. almost back to BBD — were there to hear the VP tout the President's successes
the past three years and throw their support behind giving Trump and Pence (and De Santis) “Four More Years,” the rallying cry Pence reiterated multiple times. De Santis, who introduced Pence, was called “the most popular Governor in the U.S., with a 76-percent approval rating” by Florida's Republican Party chair Joe Gruters. Then, De Santis touted his biggest successes — the strongest Sanctuary City ban in the country, raising starting salaries for all public school teachers in Florida to $47,000 per year and eliminating Common Core

standards for our students, to name a few. The Governor then introduced Pence by focusing on Pres. Trump's successes and Pence's leadership on several key issues, especially the revitalization of the U.S. space program and the enhancement of our military. Then, Pence said, “Four more years is my reason to be here. I stand with President Trump. Florida said yes to Trump in 2016 and Florida will say yes to four more years. Last time, the election was about promises made. This year, it's about promises kept.” Pence also was proud that the President gave the largest boost to our national defense since Ronald Reagan. “Thanks to the President,” he said, “we now have the finest military on land, sea, air and now, in space... and we'll always have their backs!” And of course, Pence touted his own family and religious values, his belief in the Second Amendment to our constitution and his agreement with the recent killing by U.S. forces of Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani. “When American lives were threatened by the worst terrorist in the world, the President took him out...I couldn't be more proud to serve with this President. We've made America great again!” Meanwhile, those carrying signs outside the rally had a completely different viewpoint: For example, Hunter's Green resident George Kaufmann said, “This is my first protest ever, and I was at Columbia Univer-

talist. Even though I want Trump out, Pence would not be a good replacement.” Whether anyone liked it or not, this truly was Democracy in action and I thought it was pretty cool to be there for it.

Aldi Grocery Path To Old Ruby Tuesday Site Clearer By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com The petition to re-zone the property of the former Ruby Tuesday restaurant on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. to clear the way for a proposed Aldi grocery store has sailed through its first hearing (on Jan. 16) in front of the Tampa City Council. A second hearing, where it almost certainly will receive the unanimous approval of the Council to begin permitting, is scheduled for Thursday, February 6 at 9:30 a.m. The city’s Development Review & Compliance staff found the petition, which requests to be reclassified from a PD-A (Planned Development, Alternative restaurant) to PD (Planned Development, retail sales, shopper’s goods), to be consistent with applicable City of Tampa land regulations. The proposed Aldi store, which will be located at the corner of BBD and Highwoods Preserve Pkwy. in front of the AMC movie theater, will be 19,160 square feet — almost four times the size of Ruby Tuesday — with 106 parking spaces. Leon Capital Group, the owners who purchased the 2.36-acre lot for $2.82 million in 2018, were represented

at the council meeting by Scott Stannard of Commercial Site Solutions. Stannard said the plans include not only replacing the vacant restaurant, but enhancing the surrounding area. “We feel it’s an improvement, actually,” Stannard told the council members. “We’ve had arborists go out and we’re going to be taking down some of the dead trees and replacing them with new landscaping and beefing that up. It will be a nice fit for what’s out there.” Stannard also said as that, as part of the new development, a sidewalk will be built on Highwood Preserve Pkwy., to aid pedestrians who are shopping, as well as those using the bus stop at the same corner. “It’s really surprising there’s not
one there already,” Stannard said. Aldi, a German discount grocer, could be the third supermarket to open along a less-thanone-mile stretch of the west side of BBD. It would join a Publix at the corner of BBD and New Tampa Blvd. and Sprouts Farmers Market, which will be open by this summer in the new Village at Hunter’s Lake development across from the entrance to the Hunter’s Green community. While Publix is the largest

of the three and Sprouts is a “green” grocer, Aldi is a hugely popular German discount chain that carries brands that many shoppers here in the U.S. may not recognize, including their own. More than 90 percent of the brands Aldi carries are exclusive brands. One unique aspect of Aldi is the quarter charge to rent a shopping cart at the store, to prevent stray carts from being left in the parking lot where they can dent cars. Users get their quarter back when they return the cart.

The first “New Tampa Business Climate” meeting at Compton Park at Tampa Palms in July drew a crowd looking for answers — that will be revealed February 3!
Business Study Results Meeting Feb. 3! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Tampa Mayor Jane Castor will be on hand as the findings of a New Tampa business climate study by the University of South Florida School of Public Affairs — triggered last year by concerns over the number of businesses closing in our area — will be revealed at a community meeting on Monday, February 3, 6 p.m. Castor was briefed on the results of the study on Jan. 27, and will deliver introductory remarks at the meeting, which will be held at Compton Park (16101 Compton Dr.) in Tampa Palms. Tampa District 7 City Council member Luis Viera will host the meeting, which he first helped spearhead last year after he said he received phone calls and emails from constituents — as did Castor — who were concerned about the closing of local businesses. In early 2019, the Neighborhood News, after receiving many of those same calls, addressed the issue of the closings since 2017 of stores like HH Gregg (see pg. 1), Staples and Bed Bath & Beyond in the Market Square at Tampa Palms Plaza, as well as restaurants like Casa Ramos in Tampa Palms and Ruby Tuesday on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd just north of I-75, also have been shuttered, and two Mexican restaurants have failed at the site of the one-time Romano’s Macaroni Grill. Others, including popular local restaurants like Las Palmas (which reopened in a different location in New Tampa) and Café Olé, as well as former local staples Beef O’Brady’s, Boston Market and Dairy Queen also have shut down over the past few years. USF’s School of Public Affairs and its director Ron Sanders agreed to take on the project of studying New Tampa’s business climate, along with graduate students working towards their Master’s degree in Urban & Regional Planning. 8
“The meeting will reveal those findings, and then those in attendance can weigh in,” Viera said. “It will be interesting to see what they found, and if we have a challenge, how to face it.” Four students volunteered to conduct the study. At a meeting in July, they heard from close to 100 people who attended a meeting with Viera, District 2 Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan and District 63 State Representative Fentrice Driskell. While some community members expressed worry, others were confident New Tampa would bounce back, in part due to the sometimes-cyclical nature of business. Since that meeting, in fact, a number of the local businesses that had been vacated have announced new tenants. The Brunchery (Boston Market), Urban Air Adventure Park (HH Gregg), Taza Market (Staples), Regina Margherita, which was formerly Chefs of Napoli (Beef O’Brady’s) are either open or close to it, while Aldi is looking into taking over the old Ruby Tuesday location (see story on pg. 6). And, as we reported last issue, even the long-vacant Sweetbay supermarket could have a new tenant signed up by the end of 2020. “We have seen some positive changes,” Viera says. “I still think there’s some cause for concern, but at the very least, this is something that tells us about the business markers and growth in New Tampa, and what we need to do to keep the momentum going. We want to make sure our area does not deteriorate.” Viera says the study also should provide some insight into some of the transportation challenges local businesses face, as well as how the design of New Tampa, especially along BBD, plays into commercial success. To RSVP to attend the community meeting since seating is limited, you can email brannon.jordanlazo@ tampagov.net.

Gold Reveals His Container Park Plans At Biz Meeting By JOHN C. COTEY & GARY NAGER Developer Mark Gold isn’t exactly sure what made him settle on creating a one-of-a-kind shipping container park as part of his next big project. He says he knew he wanted something green, and he wanted something small, and he wanted something unique. “I wanted it to be different than everyone else,” he said at the Economic Development Briefing for the North Tampa Bay Chamber at Pebble Creek Golf Club on Jan. 23. And, that sure looks like that will be the case. Conceptual plans for the park, which will officially be named Krate by Gold Box and will be home to nearly 100 tenants running their businesses from modified shipping crates, were officially filed with Pasco County last month. Krate is just one part, but perhaps the crown jewel, of the The Grove project, which is transforming the old, worn-down retail center into what Gold believes will soon be a major Wesley Chapel dining and entertainment hub, Mishorim-Gold Properties, a partnership between Gold and Mishorim Real Estate, bought the 200+ acres, including all of the existing structures in The Grove, for $62.7 million last year. Phase 1 of Krate will be built on nearly 7 acres of land just west of I-75 and east of The Grove’s big box retail stores like Best Buy and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Krate currently plans to have 87 tenants (many using multiple crates), 172 parking spaces, and a stage for bands and competitions that will be flanked by a pavilion and a children’s playground. But, the biggest selling point, Gold said, is the opportunity for local residents to open their own businesses by renting a crate for $1,500 per month. “We are building small spaces to give big opportunities to people,” he said. “We want this to be more mom and pop.” He has more than 30 restaurants

already with signed leases, although he said he is hoping for more service-based businesses. Most of the crates are already under contract, he said, and will start arriving in a few weeks. The first couple of containers have already arrived and more are on their way soon. Gold is planning a groundbreaking in February and for Krate to be up and running in 6-8 months. “People are going to drive one hour, one-and-a-half hours to see this concept,” Gold said. “If I had built a shopping center, people would say ‘What is the big deal?’ But, this is a shopping center built with containers with parking and lights and sidewalks and activity, lots of activity.” While often compared to Sparkman Wharf at the Channelside Bay Plaza in downtown Tampa, Gold said prior to the NTBC briefing that he has visited the Tampa crate park and said “They do not compare.” He compared Sparkman Wharf to food trucks with no wheels where you eat outside, whereas Krate’s containers will be actual restaurants with many offering both indoor and outdoor seating. “This concept, I think, is the only one like it in the world,” Gold said. At The Grove — where Gold already is filling once empty buildings with fitness
and yoga studios, a craft brewery, a dueling piano bar, Italian eateries and even an axe throwing bar while dubbing it “The Village” (see pg. 1) — variety is the spice of life. “People will drive here just for this variety,” Gold said. Among his 30-35 restaurants are zero chains and places offering Cajun, Chinese, Colombian, Cuban, Dutch, French, Japanese, Italian, Puerto Rican, Thai and Vegan food, as well as other places serving cupcakes, ice cream, falafel, sandwiches, juices and even a mojito lab. And, he said, the exterior of the containers will be deco-

rated with professional graffiti art. He is so confident the concept is ready to take off, he said he already has plans to develop other Krate by Gold Box container concepts across the country. His second site, in Raleigh, NC, where he has two other developments, already has been picked out. Those in attendance at the NTBC briefing certainly were excited about it, especially when NTBC CEO Hope Allen (who co-hosted the briefing with Gold) said, “Pasco just approved wet zoning for all of The Grove. You can get a drink and walk from place to place with it.” Allen also said that there will be a rapid transit bus stop near The Grove property. “It’s all coming,” Gold said. “People want something different, and we are going to give it to them. I love it.”

Wesley Chapel District Park To Get Street Hockey Rink By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com The transformation of the Wesley Chapel District Park (WCDP) on Boyette Rd. continues. Not only is the park getting an indoor basketball gymnasium — hopefully later this year — and not only is it now home to local cricket players, and not only does it have the only inclusive playground for children with disabilities in the area, it also will soon be home to a street hockey rink. On Jan. 7, Pasco County finalized an agreement with the Tampa Bay Lightning to build two outdoor street hockey rinks in the county, one at the J. Ben Harrill Recreation Complex in Holiday, and the other at WCDP. “When they first came up here (with the idea), they were going to do one, but our county is so wide and we have such an interest that they were nice to agree to do two,” said District 3 Pasco Commissioner Kathryn Starkey, who was originally pitched the idea. The rinks will measure 60’ by 120’ feet, and will come with pins for dasher board systems, player benches, a penalty box area and a scoreboard.
Pasco County has budgeted $240,000 from the Capital Improvement Plan Projects Fund for the rinks, most of which will go towards the underlying concrete pads. The Lightning Foundation will take care of the rest. In the last year, plans have been finalized to add an indoor gymnasium, an “It’s obviinclusive playground (which is now open) and an outdoor street hockey rink to ously exciting the Wesley Chapel District Park on Boyette Rd. anytime you can dle schools as part of their Build The introduce kids to a new sport,” said Thunder program. someplace for the youngsters to play,” Feaster said. In addition to building the street hockey rink at WCDP, Feaster said the Lightning also will provide former players to help assist in the Grand Opening as well as programming throughout the year. “We’re pretty excited about it,” he said. Wesley Chapel already is home to AdventHealth Center Ice (AHCI), the largest skating facility south of New York in the United States. AHCI is being rightfully credited with increasing the popularity of ice skating in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel areas, and has been drawing more than a million visitors each year of its existence. The outdoor street hockey rink will open the door for more people who might not be able to afford hockey equipment to be introduced to playing the sport. “I think we have more kids that play hockey around here than anywhere in Florida,” Moore says. “The Bruce B. Downs corridor (down through New Tampa) has a lot of kids who play, and this will only help give (more) opportunities to others.”

...of what we were able to accomplish in 2019 with a very small staff of dedicated print and video journalists who helped us put out slightly more than 100 videos in the 50 weeks of 2019 since we became one of only 23 U.S. and 86 worldwide media companies to receive funding from the Google News Initiative. Our news videos did outstanding numbers all year on Facebook — slightly under 500,000 total views, a reach of nearly 750,000 and more than 70,000 total engagements. Our top-10 videos of the year averaged nearly 12,000 Facebook views and a reach of nearly 20,000 each, with an average of 3,100 engagements. Our overall average for all 100 videos was 4,500 views, a reach of 8,000 and about 700 engagements per video. However, the Google News Initiative was funding recipients in part to build a following on YouTube, which has been owned by Google for several years. And, our 2019 numbers on YouTube — where it’s much harder than it is on Facebook to grab a large audience — quite honestly, weren’t worth bragging about. Part of the problem is that earlier this year, we switched our YouTube channel — which had more than 2,000 subscribers — from what we had been calling WCNT-tv (“Wesley Chapel & New Tampa Television”) to its current “Neighborhood News Online” You-

Creative Permanent Makeup By Pam: Worry-Free Eyebrows & More By CELESTE McLAUGHLIN
Pam Edmonson has a warm, welcoming personality that sparkles. You might say she lights up the room. Her passion really shines through when she talks about helping and serving people, especially through her career. Pam is an experienced permanent makeup artist who owns Serenity Salon & Spa Suites, located off S.R. 54 in the Brookfield Professional Park, about a halfmile west of Morris Bridge Rd./Eiland Blvd. in Wesley Chapel. At the salon, she provides permanent makeup for eyebrows, eyelids and lips. “It’s such a blessing to know that I’m really being helpful to people,” she says, “especially when you see that end result that makes them feel better about themselves.” One area of specialty for Pam is helping people who have had cancer. Some come to her after they’ve lost all of their hair from chemotherapy. Others find her before they lose their hair. Pam can help to create their eyebrows in permanent makeup, following the natural hairline that already exists. Pam says her career in permanent makeup started after many years of running a business in the manufactured
Permanent makeup eyebrows can make patients feel better about themselves, and that is what Pam Edmonson of Creative Permanent Makeup by Pam says gives her the most satisfaction. housing industry. In 2009, Pam says she wanted to do something different, so she went to school to become a hair stylist. While she enjoyed hair, Pam says she soon discovered something that interested her even more. “I love detail,” Pam says. “As a detail person, eyebrows are what first drew me into the permanent makeup field.” She studied permanent makeup at the
Boca Ta-2 School for Permanent Makeup in Williston, FL, in 2010, and began providing permanent makeup services in Zephyrhills in 2011. She is licensed in Florida as both a cosmetologist and as a tattoo artist. Pam offers permanent makeup for eyebrows and lips, along with permanent eyeliner. She says many of her clients who want permanent eyebrows choose a technique called microblading.
“Brows are always my favorite because of the drastic way they change how someone looks,” Pam says. “Our eyes are meant to be framed, and brows definitely complete the face. Some women look so much younger when they have them done.” With microblading, Pam uses a small blade and ink to create individual stroke lines. She uses a pencil to draw an outline, then uses the microblade to draw each individual hair, adding a more natural look to the eyebrow. Pam strongly recommends that anyone considering microblading “should do their homework,” explaining that some people who offer the service may only have taken a three-day class in the technique before they start working on clients. The person who will do your eyebrows should sit down with you and show you before-and-after pictures of their own work, Pam says. Pam was trained in microblading in 2014, when the process was new. Since then, she says she has done hundreds of sets of eyebrows. “It’s been close to 10 years since I first went to school,” says Pam. “I’ve learned so much over the years about different ways of doing things, using certain inks, learning from experience, and how everyone’s skin is so different.”

Innovative Treatment For Depression Available At Florida TMS Clinic more effective, that’s going to get more patients better faster.” That’s where, he says, TMS therapy comes in. “We are targeting the centers of the brain that are responsible for depression,” he explains, “and stimulating the area to get somebody depression-free as soon as possible.” He also believes that TMS, which is a form of what’s called neuromodulation, also will be used in the future to treat anxiety, OCD, PTSD and maybe even smoking cessation. While TMS is a newer therapy, it is FDA-approved and supported by scientific research. At Florida TMS Clinic, Dr. Bowarshi says the types of therapy that are offered are the most cutting-edge. “We used the most advanced technology in this field, which is navigated TMS,” says Dr. Bowarshi. He explains that means he uses a 3D camera system and infrared to ensure magnetic coils are placed exactly where they should be and don’t move during the treatment, eliminating human error. “We’re the only one in Tampa Bay area that has navigated TMS,” he says, “which increases the accuracy and the consistency of the treatment.”
By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN As Khaled Bowarshi, MD, studied to be a psychiatrist and internist, he realized that treating depression with pills has proven not to be the best way to go. With undesirable side effects and even failures where some medications sometimes don’t work for some people, Dr. Bowarshi wanted to be part of the future of helping people in a more effective way. In November 2019, he opened Florida TMS Clinic in the Cypress Glen Professional Park in Wesley Chapel, just north of S.R. 56. Here, he offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS for short. TMS is a treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain known to be responsible for depression. It is a safe, proven, FDAcleared, non-drug therapy with no known systemic side effects. Dr. Bowarshi is Board-certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry. After earning his medical (M.D.) degree from Damascus University in Syria in 2010, Dr. Bowarshi was selected to complete his residency in a prestigious program at West Virginia University in Charleston. He spent five years learning both specialties in an integrated program. “The idea of doing two specialties

nies, but they also offer an alternative. “We try to bring the cost down so patients can pay out of pocket for the treatment (if they have to),” he says. The advanced technology at Florida TMS Clinic also goes beyond the type of treatment offered. “We have a patient portal that is very intuitive,” explains Dr. Bowarshi. “Patients can text me directly through the portal in a secure fashion, and I reply almost immediately.” In addition, the office is paperless, with all forms being completed on secure tablets, in a way the doctor calls “convenient and advanced.”
The graphic and photo above show how TMS (also known as Transmodulation) works. accelerated TMS, allowing people to take what Dr. Bowarshi calls a “life-changing vacation,” which condenses the therapy into one week, with multiple sessions each day. Dr. Bowarshi says the typical protocol is six weeks of one session a day, five days a week. Laurie, who is currently receiving TMS treatment and asked that we only use her first name, says she’s been taking medication for depression for years, but doesn’t want to continue on medication because of the side effects. So, she stopped taking pills, and decided to try something different. While she hasn’t yet completed her TMS treatment at Florida TMS Clinic, she says she can already see a big change. “I started on New Year’s Eve and go five days a week,” she says. “So far, I’m very optimistic. I love going because of the doctor and the staff. They have this great attitude and optimism that life’s going to be different, and I’m seeing it day by day.” Dr. Bowarshi says he also tries to make the treatment affordable for patients. He admits it can be challenging to get insurance companies to agree to pay for the TMS therapy, with patients sometimes needing to show up to four failures using antidepressants. He says he and his staff advocate for their patients to be pre-authorized for the TMS treatments by their insurance compaNeighborhood News

Free Psychiatric Evaluation
Florida TMS Clinic offers a free consultation to anyone interested in TMS therapy. “We do a full psychiatric evaluation first,” explains Dr. Bowarshi. “Sometimes we tell the patient that TMS is not the right step for them, and then we direct them what to do next, all for free.” But usually, Dr. Bowarshi says he does recommend TMS. He invites anyone suffering from depression to see him for the free consultation, even if it’s just to learn more about the options available. “If you have been suffering from depression for a long time and you have tried many medications before with those medications not helping or causing side effects, I think you owe it to yourself to look into the alternative of TMS,” says Dr. Bowarshi. “I’d like to invite you for that free consultation just to learn about TMS directly from an expert.” He adds, “Your happiness, your quality of life, is the most important thing, and we can’t just postpone it. We have to get better and we have to get better now.” Florida TMS Clinic is located at 26843 Tanic Dr., Suite 101, in the Cypress Glen Professional Park, just north of S.R. 56, about a mile east of the I-75 exit (behind MINI of Wesley Chapel). Your CBD Store New Tampa Offers Answers & Relief! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Your CBD Store owner Debra Curler proudly and expertly shows off the products at her newly-opened store — although it gives off more of a boutique-feel — in the Pebble Creek Collection plaza off Bruce B Downs (BBD) Blvd. There are oils and creams and edible products infused by cannabidiol, or CBD, that offer much-desired relief from a plethora of problems, in various forms with multiple dosage sizes. Curler, who opened the Pebble Creek location Nov. 29 and is hoping to schedule a Grand Opening soon, says she uses the topical CBD relief cream she sells in her store on her right knee, and she says she would not be able to get through the day without it. It is that relief, she says, as well as an eye-opening introduction to Lisa Feigel, who owns the Wesley Chapel Your CBD Store, that drew her to owning a franchise. “I just want to give back,” Curler says. “There are so many stories about opioids and medication not providing the relief people need, so I did some research and was so intrigued by what
CBD has to offer. We really do help people.” When you walk into Curler’s store, however, don’t expect to be besieged by an employee hard selling you oils, creams and gummies. Most likely, they will begin with some education. If you like what you hear, Your CBD Store will offer you some free samples. “A lot of people that come in still really don’t understand what West Meadows resident Debra Curler (shown with her husband Dait is,” Curler says. “Education is part of vid) owns the Your CBD Store in Pebble Creek. CBD is derived from hemp and basically provides the health benefits of cannabis — without the high. Studies are limited, but CBD has been touted for its effectiveness treating childhood epilepsy by stopping the onset of seizures, and proponents says it can help relieve stress, inflammation and joint pain, as well as other physical and neurological maladies.
An Industry Pioneer
The CBD industry is in the midst of a growth explosion. But, Curler says, not all CBD stores or products are created equal. Your CBD store, a chain with more than 600 locations nationwide, focuses on quality, with third-party testing and QR codes on the bottles if you want to check out the lab reports. “You can scan ours and see exactly what you are going to be getting,” Curler says. ing of those plants take place in Florida. SunMed touts its Co2 extraction process for eliminating the need for chemical solvents, while producing a higher quality, full-spectrum CBD. Those full-spectrum products contain 0.3% of THC, which is the legal limit. She calls the shelf containing the full-spectrum products the King of the Store, as it displays most of the store’s best-selling products. While just the non-THC broad-spectrum CBD oil can relieve pain and alleviate stress, sometimes it is more effective in combination with THC. Curler says her full-spectrum products fly off the shelves. “You will never get high on these products,” Curler says, “and you can’t overdose on them.” After the Co2 extraction process, the CBD is processed again to remove the THC to create SunMed CBD’s broad-spectrum offering. At the September USA CBD Expo in Miami, FL, which had more than 300 vendors and 13,000 attendees, SunMed CBD was award two Excellence Awards for Best CBD Tincture and Best CBD Topical.

various forms and flavors and a variety of dosages, the size of which Curler and her staff discuss with customers as they look to find the perfect balance. There are water-soluble products designed to be dissolved in water, and get into your system in 4-7 minutes, says Curler, while lasting 3-4 hours. Tincture oils are dispensed under your tongue and take longer to get into your system — 45 minutes or so — but last longer than the water-soluble products, typically around 7-10 hours.

There also are gummies, hard candy and honey sticks, which can be stirred into your coffee or tea. The topical creams, which Curler swears by, are another big seller. They provide relief by being rubbed on balky knees, bad backs, sore shoulders and more. Publisher Gary Nager says the topical cream is the only thing that has provided relief for his knees. “I’ve spoken with doctors who have said it works for them or they have patients who tell them it’s a godsend,” Nager says.
While CBD research is still in its infancy, some of the studies conducted have produced encouraging results when it comes to managing pain and inflammation with arthritis. Due to the calming nature of CBD products, there is even a shelf of products for dogs — edible treats and tinctures can be effective — who may suffer from anxiety when their owner leaves home, in thunderstorms or on holidays when fireworks are being set off. “The tinctures are great, they can be put right into your pet’s water, and they won’t even know it,” Curler says. The CBD industry is still something of a new frontier, and Curler says she is excited to be a part of it. While the science is still working on studies to catch up to the explosion of products, Curler says half her business is repeat customers, and almost daily she hears stories about how life-changing CBD can be. “We’ve been getting such wonderful feedback from everyone,” Curler says. “It’s really been a rewarding experience.” Your CBD Store New Tampa is located at 19651 BBD, Suite B-1. hen Juliana Silva’s family first moved to New Tampa, she didn’t speak a word of English; all she understood was her love of the water. “I’ve been in a pool since I was four,” says Juliana, now 17 and a former student at Benito Middle School and both Wharton and Wiregrass Ranch high schools. Currently, Juliana lives in Moraga, CA, just outside of San Francisco, where she trains full-time with the U.S. Junior National Synchronized Swim Team. After nine years on the Tampa YMCA Stingrays (TYS) competitive “synchro” team at the New Tampa facility, Juliana has her sights set on the ultimate prize: a 2024 Olympic gold medal. “Juliana came to the Stingrays as an eager-to-learn, naturally athletic eight-year-old,” says TYS Head Coach Camille Albrecht, 30, who has sent several students to the national team. Since Juliana didn’t understand English at the time, Albrecht would use hand motions to demonstrate the correct techniques. “She picked up all the synchro words and English very quickly,” said Albrecht, who described Juliana as a “joy to coach, always cheering everyone else on.” Although Juliana was born in Indianapolis, IN, her family (mother Susana Barrios, father Rafael Silva and brother Leo Silva) moved to Venezuela and Colombia shortly after, returning to the U.S. in 2011. “I’d always heard that Tampa was a great city,” says

Her brother, now 19, started soccer at five, and their father was a former amateur champion and professional tennis player. All Juliana wanted to do at first was stay home, so her mother decided to get her out of the house by signing Juliana up for swim classes at the Y. “She looked at me on the way to that first class and said, ‘Okay Mom, I’m going to try this once, but if I don’t like it, I’m not going to do it,’” Susana says. A month later, Juliana began training with Albrecht, kickstarting her dreams of Olympic gold.
Building A Track Record Of Excellence At age 14, Silva placed sixth in her very first Regional “zone” meet, qualifying her for the National meet. It took three attempts to make the junior national team, which she did by placing 16th in the nation. “Before that, I was hard on myself,” Juliana says. “I told myself I’d never make it, that this was just for fun. But making it to Nationals was an eye-opener.” Susana says she began saving money for the pricey gear required for her daughter’s national competitions, including single swimsuits that could cost $200 apiece. Our 2019 Dining Survey Results! YOUR TOP-20 FAVORITE RESTAURANTS
Story by Gary Nager Results compiled by Jonathon Cotey
IN NEW TAMPA!
A
lthough 2019 was an even better year for restaurants in Wesley Chapel than in New Tampa, there’s no doubt that our readers in zip code 33647 had a lot to say about the eateries located south of the Pasco County line, too. In total, we had a record number of right around 1,500 ballots cast this year, surpassing our old record of more than 1,200 a few years ago. And the split of the voters was roughly 900 Wesley Chapel ballots and 600 New Tampa votes submitted this year. We thank young Jonathon Cotey, the son of managing editor John Cotey, who was charged with tallying all of those ballots. Great job, Jonathon! One thing that I know helped stimulate more votes this year was the fact there were far fewer categories. For example, the only way to judge who won categories that didn’t appear on this year ballots — like favorite Latin, Asian, Mediterranean and favorite burgers was to see who received the most votes (five faves per ballot) for favorite restaurant in New Tampa. And, among those winners were Liang’s Bistro for your favorite Asian restaurant in New Tampa, followed by Kobe steakhouse, Sushi Café, Koizi, Sukhothai, Thai Ruby, Thai Lanna and Minerva. The Latin restaurant that received the most Favorite Restaurant votes was Vallarta’s, followed by Las Palmas (which will finish quite a bit higher on my list next month), Cantina, Tijuana Flats and Chipotle. And, despite there being several more options, only two Mediterranean restaurants — Acropolis and Little Greek — finished in our readers’ top 40. The burger place that received the most votes as
Las Palmas only finished as the 12th favorite restaurant in New Tampa in our 2019 Reader Dining Survey & Contest, but will surely finish higher next month on our editor’s list.
our readers’ Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa — Five Guys — was something of a surprise, beating out previous winners like Burger 21 and Oakley’s Grille. Other top-20 surprises this year (at least in one editor’s opinion) included Chick-fil-A (#7 Favorite Restaurant?), Cracker Barrel and Panera Bread.
And, The Winners Are...
As always, our readers are the big winners again this year. Selected at random from those 1,500 entries to receive gift cards to the restaurants of their choice were: $100 Gift Card — Debbie Gregory, Meadow Pointe $60 Gift Card — Teshania Wiley-Smith, Pebble Creek $35 Gift Card — Jennifer Burgos, Tampa Palms Congrats to all of this year’s winners!

BEST RESTAURANT S tonewood Grill & Tavern’s three-peat as our readers’ Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa should come as no surprise. Zip code 33647’s most upscale eatery features great steaks and fresh seafood, plus an alwayshoppin’ bar area that helped Stonewood also finish as our readers’ second favorite bar or tavern in New Tampa this year (see next page). For me, Stonewood’s decision to start opening for lunch a year or so ago was a great move. And, even though the menu is a little pricier than what many people want to spend for lunch, the food is great and the quieter, less-crowded atmosphere is perfect for conducting a business meeting or social event.
C
iccio Cali, also located in the Shoppes at The Pointe plaza in Tampa Palms (in the same parking lot at Stonewood) should receive all the credit for first bringing “bowl culture” to New Tampa, and also has great pizzas, burgers and wrap sandwiches.

Jannah and I especially enjoy the seared ahi tuna appetizer, the 6- and 9-oz. filet mignon options, the fresh fish (we shared an excellent grilled grouper on our most recent visit) and the fresh, always tasty veggies. In terms of food quality and service, nothing has changed since new managing partner Matt Passardi took over after the beloved Dave Rathbun departed last year, so this favorite 8-location, Florida-based mini-chain can expect to stay at or near the top of our readers’ list every year. — GN
iang’s Bistro Asian Cuisine may not be New York-style or even authentic Chinese food, but that hasn’t stopped it from being the favorite Asian restaurant in New Tampa with our readers virtually every year it has been open. Try the BBQ ribs and sautéed green beans (order ‘em spicy!).
M
r. Dunderbak’s and Stonewood were the only restaurants that made the top-5 in two categories (Favorite Restaurant and Bar) this year, so people obviously love it for more than just its beer variety. I enjoy the tasty schnitzel, sausages and sandwiches, plus German chocolate bars. Sehr lecker!

BEST BAR
O
wners John Kuemmel and Shawn Diehl have done exactly what they wanted to do when they decided nearly three years ago to fulfill a 25-year dream they shared of opening their own bar. In the heart of Tampa Palms, they have spun an inventive menu, ice cold beer, premium liquor and a unique atmosphere into our readers’ favorite bar in New Tampa to enjoy a night out. What’s not to like (other than the ridiculously hard questions on Tuesday Trivia Nights)? A bar that has outstanding food — and The Fat Rabbit finished just behind Acropolis (see previous page) as our readers’ sixth favorite restaurant in New Tampa, too — is never a bad thing. The chicken wings are arguably the best around — make sure

And, the decor gives the Fat Rabbit an elegant look with a comfortable neighborhood feel that keeps you coming back for more, even without live music or karaoke (sorry Gary)! — JCC
r. Dunderbak’s has never had a fullalcohol bar, but its huge variety of beers from around the world, unique Germaninspired menu, gifts and even chocolates keep it one of our readers’ favorite bars year after year, which often makes it hard to find a seat at that bar.

BEST PIZZA
T
here is no doubt that Harold Hasselback, the owner of the Cappy’s Pizzeria in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center, has never lost sight of what his five Cappy’s locations do best. While some restaurants try to be all things to all people, Cappy’s menu consists mainly of pizza, calzones, salads (like the awesome Greek salad pictured here) and beer. The pizza, which I have described in years past as “thin crust, but not New York-style” and “deep-dish, but not authentic Chicago-style,” has been among our readers’ favorites since Cappy’s first opened in Tampa Palms almost a decade ago, but had never won the title of “Favorite Pizza

arco’s Pizza is probably the best of the national pizza chains for my money, even though, like Cappy’s, you can’t call it true NY-style pizza. It’s a credit to Hasselback and his laser focus on what Cappy’s does best — delicious food at great prices — that this long-time favorite (which first opened in Seminole Heights) has ascended to the top of our readers’ Favorite Pizza list. But, it’s not a big surprise. The formula of fantastic food (and beer) in a fun, funky, family atmosphere is a proven formula for success — and now, a Neighborhood News Reader Award! — GN

athy and Chip Byrne have owned the Cold Stone Creamery since it opened on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in 2004, employed hundreds of local kids and delivering thousands and thousands of delicious treats to area residents. Welcome to Cold Stone, indeed. New Tampa’s favorite desert joint has a fun and friendly staff that delivers a very rich ice cream, which has so much butter fat that Cathy won’t even tell us exactly how much. The ice cream, which is actually made in the back, is scooped onto a cold stone (get it?), and whatever flavors (a heaping spoonful of peanut butter?) and treats (Kit Kats? M&Ms?) your heart desires

While being located in front of a movie theater ain’t bad for an ice cream shop, what makes Cold Stone your favorite is that it is a high-quality product and a fun place. For Great Meals & Events, Try The Hilton Garden Inn! By GARY NAGER I’m betting that most New Tampa residents have never eaten an actual meal at the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel, located off S.R. 56, less than a mile east of I-75. And, that makes me a little sad. For those who have never stepped foot inside this beautiful, award-winning (the year-old hotel won the New Business of the Year honors at the North Tampa Bay Chamber’s 2019 Awards of Excellence gala in Nov.), 124-room hotel, much less enjoyed a meal there, I hope this article will help you decide to go. Even if you don’t have relatives visiting or need a night in a local hotel room yourself, the Hilton Garden Inn’s restaurant — also known as the Garden Grille — serves outstanding food and drinks at great prices and will find its way into my top-10 favorite restaurants in Wesley Chapel when I release my list of favorites for 2019 in our Feb. 28 issue. I also hope that you’ll sit down with the hotel’s market director of sales Lisa Moore to discuss the possibility of hosting an event for 8-200 (and more) people at this contemporary hotel that still has that great new hotel smell. Lisa, an ambassador with the NTBC who also is a member of the Rotary Club
If you’re interested in a great brunch for 40 people, check out (left) the French toast casserole, fresh muffins and breads and mimosa bar (right) from a recent brunch at the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel, located on S.R. 56, just east of the Texas Roadhouse. of Wesley Chapel, is a fellow New Yawka knowing that I was planning to write this story shortly afterwards. who will make sure that your event comes off without a hitch and will send Sam and her fiancé Tyler were definiteeveryone home happy afterwards. ly on a budget, and they knew they would For example, when my stepdaughter have roughly 40 people at the shower, Kristen’s best friend Sami needed an afso Lisa helped them come up with a nice fordable location last month for a bridal brunch menu — including a unique French shower, Lisa sharpened her pencil for me, toast casserole (at top left in photo above

And, best of all was the service — the trays and mimosa bar were all constantly refilled and everything was delicious and well worth the price tag. The Hilton Garden Inn’s spacious ballroom (photo on next page) is easily subdividable to fit the size you need to host a variety of amazing events. “Just tell me what you need and we can make it happen,” Lisa says. “We have a set menu for dinner, but we have an

extensive catering menu and a great chef (Frank Skalitza) on the premises who can make pretty much anything you want.” Jannah and I were on hand for the Grand Opening of the hotel in October of 2018 and we were so impressed (as was everyone who was there) with the filet mignon carving station (bottom right pic) and the four different pastas (top right) that also were created in front of the guests that we figured it must have been an outside catering company that was brought in for the event. “Nope,” said Lisa, “that was all in-house. Pretty good, right?” Actually, I would go so far as to say excellent, and the deliciousness doesn’t end there. Although the Garden Grille only serves buffet and cooked-to-order breakfast (that I haven’t tried yet) and dinner (I wish it was open for lunch), I have to say that virtually everything we’ve sampled there has been delicious. My favorite appetizers so far are the bruschetta (only available on the catering menu, center photo above), the spicy meatballs with fresh mozzarella and the wings “your way” (my way is extra crisp with the sweet chili & sesame sauce on the side). My favorite entrées so far are the grilled 12.-oz ribeye steak and the fusilli carbonara. The burgers and sandwiches (my favorite is the yummy bistro chicken sandwich above left) are great, too, as are the variety of flatbreads. In other words, there’s good reason why the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel is going to make my Wesley Chapel top-10. The hotel is beautiful and has great amenities (nice pool, fitness center, etc.) and, even though we’ve never stayed there, we have toured

We Have You Covered: 2019 Oscar Picks
The 2020 Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, February 9 (on ABC-TV), and for those of us who haven’t been to see a movie since “Finding Nemo” was released in 2003 (Thanks, kids!), we have enlisted the help of local movie buff Matthew Hunter to guide us through this year’s 92nd annual event with his picks in some of the biggest categories.
Best Animated Feature Film
THE NOMINEES: “Klaus,” ”How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” “I Lost My Body,” “Missing Link” & “Toy Story 4.” THE PICK: Nine times out of ten, Disney usually reigns supreme in this category. But, not this year. I’m picking “Klaus,” a passion project from director Sergio Pablos. His unique origin story about Santa Claus and the Christmas holiday is great. In a world of 3D animated features, Klaus stands out from the crowd by being mostly a hand-drawn animated film. Bonus: It’s on Netflix, so you can (and should) check it out.
Best Original Song
THE NOMINEES: “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman” – Music by Elton John; Lyrics by Bernie Taupin; “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from “Toy Story 4” – Music & Lyrics by Randy Newman; “I’m Standing
40
with You” from “Breakthrough” – Music & Lyrics by Diane Warren; “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II” – Music & Lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez; “Stand Up” from “Harriet” – Music & Lyrics by Joshuah Brian Campbell and Cynthia Erivo. THE PICK: There were some pretty great films songs this year, such as the fun and jazzy “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” or the big grand ballad that was “Into the Unknown.” But I’m picking “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman.” The song manages to work perfectly as a catchy pop song in the context of the movie.
Best Supporting Actress
THE NOMINEES: Florence Pugh – “Little Women,” as Amy March; Kathy Bates – “Richard Jewell,” as Barbara “Bobi” Jewell; Laura Dern – “Marriage Story,” as Nora Fanshaw; Scarlett Johansson – “Jojo Rabbit,” as Rosie Betzler; Margot Robbie – “Bombshell,” as Kayla Pospisil. THE PICK: My money is on Pugh, who is the best of the many brilliant performers in “Little Women.” Watching her evolution from selfish sister to her own person was terrific, and she probably brings the most emotion and bitterness to her performance of all the nominees.
Best Supporting Actor
THE NOMINEES: Brad Pitt – “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” as Cliff Booth; Tom Hanks – “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” as Fred Rogers; Anthony Hopkins – “The Two Popes,” as Pope Benedict XVI; Al Pacino – “The Irishman,” as Jimmy Hoffa; Joe Pesci – “The Irishman,” as Russell Bufalino. THE PICK: Hanks, Pacino and Pesci were all terrific, but I think Pitt picks up the award for his performance as Cliff Booth in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” What makes Pitt so great is that he is the epitome of cool, and his character is charismatic and awesome at the same time, already earning him a Screen Actors Guild award in the same category.
Best Actress
THE NOMINEES: Scarlett Johansson – “Marriage Story,” as Nicole Barber; Cynthia Erivo – “Harriet,” as Harriet Tubman; Saoirse Ronan – “Little Women,” as Josephine “Jo” March; Charlize Theron – “Bombshell,” as Megyn Kelly; Renée Zellweger – “Judy,” as Judy Garland. THE PICK: While there were some great performances delivered by Ronan, Theron and Zellweger, I thought Johansson’s Nicole Barber was the best. The wife of the main character (played

by Adam Driver), Johansson has the difficult task of trying to divorce him while remaining part of her son’s life. The film delves into the hardships of divorce, and Johansson puts everything into the role.
Best Actor
THE NOMINEES: Joaquin Phoenix – “Joker,” as Arthur Fleck/Joker; Antonio Banderas – “Pain and Glory,” as Salvador Mallo; Leonardo DiCaprio – “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” as Rick Dalton; Adam Driver – “Marriage Story,” as Charlie Barber; Jonathan Pryce – The “Two Popes,” as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. THE PICK: Banderas was great, and Pryce was superb. However, this is a one-sided competition as far as I’m concerned, because Phoenix in Joker was simply just better. His performance carried the movie, eschewing the usual See “Oscar Picks” on page 46.

Mahana Fresh Set To Open Next Week
So, the poké bowl craze is in full bloom here in New Tampa, as Mahana Fresh, which has an existing location in Bradenton, is getting ready to open on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. just north and west of I-75 (at 17512 Doña Michelle Dr.), in the plaza that also is home to Bay Care Urgent Care (next to Glory Days Grill). Owner Ryan Mortti (above), who previously managed the McDonald’s restaurants on BBD (north of Cross Creek Blvd.) and S.R. 56, warns that Mahana Fresh is “much more than just another poké bowl place.” Ryan says that in addition to the usual ahi tuna and chicken poké bowls, Mahana Fresh
also cooks up proteins like grilled steak, teriyaki and Asian BBQ chicken and miso roasted tofu. Plus, there are unique “pour your own” beer taps with a nice variety of beers. Ryan says he is excited to open Tampa’s first Mahana Fresh concept shortly after you receive this issue in your mailbox. “Wait until you try the food,” he told me. “I know this community will love it!” For more info, visit MahanaFresh.com or stop in next week and please tell Ryan and his staff that Gary from the Neighborhood News sent you!
The Gift Box To Close In March?
About a year ago, New Tampa had
two unique mom-and-pop boutiques. As of sometime in March, that number will be zero. Last year, Lå Pink Boutique vacated its space in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza and now, we’ve been told that owner Jennifer Colon will shutter her popular The Gift Box boutique in The Shoppes at The Pointe plaza in Tampa Palms (above) to devote more time to her family. But, since the store known for its unique variety of gifts will still be open for several more weeks, you really should stop in and check
out everything from unique picture frames to signs painted with cute sayings and from specialty wine glasses to great gifts for moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas (like the adorable baby onesies on this page) that Jannah and I will likely not be able to resist. The Gift Box is located at 17032 Palm Pointe Dr. For more information, search “The Gift Box Boutique” on Facebook or call (813) 284-5986.
Congrats, Kyymara & Esthetics 813!

It’s Raining Berries...And It’s Not What We Thought!
Do you ever drive around Wesley Chapel and wonder what some of the new places will be like that you’ve never heard of before? No? OK, maybe it’s just me. One of the places that fooled me with its name is the beautiful new Raining Berries, located in the outparcel building set in from S.R. 56 between Earth Fare and Walk On’s Bistro & Bar (at 25595 Sierra Center Blvd.) that also includes two not-not-yet-open businesses — Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Bijous Beauty Bar. If you’re like me, you were likely thinking “another frozen yogurt place” (like CherriBerri, MochiBerri, LaBerry, etc.), and you’d be wrong. I know being able to Google search everything has made mystery mostly a thing of the past but this is a first-ever location of a new business that hasn’t yet opened and their website wasn’t up (until recently). But, would you have

guessed that Raining Berries’ signature product is (drumroll, please)...ethically and sustainably sourced coffee (and hot and cold coffee drinks) — and really delicious coffee at that? There’s some pretty greatlooking baked goods for sale, too. So, where do the berries come in? Raining Berries does have a variety of açai berry bowls (left), dragon fruit “pitaya” bowls and coconut bowls, but RainingBerries.com didn’t yet have pictures or descriptions of all of these bowls at our press time. See, still a little mystery! At any rate, the place itself is very much cool modern, but after sampling a most delicious (not sweet) “traditional” (not caramel) macchiato on my first visit, I was very happy knowing that Jannah and I live less than a mile from the place. For info, call (813) 949-8299 or stop in and try Raining Berries for yourself and tell them I sent you! • Managing editor John Cotey says other businesses getting ready to build in the Cypress Creek area include Zukku Sushi, Woofgang Bakery and a Charles Schwab office. These may or may not be located in the same building just west of Bahama Breeze along S.R. 56 as the European Wax Center, which does have its sign up, but look for details next issue. • Among the tenants we haven’t specifically announced by name before at the Village at Hunter’s Lake development across from the entrance to Hunter’s Green include the second location of Touch Nail Spa (see ad on pg. 25) and the very cool-sounding Coder School of New Tampa (see ad on pg. 3). Both openings are still months away, but we just wanted to keep you updated. And, we’ll more updates next issue! — GN

‘Academy Awards’
Continued from page 40
hammy Joker played by previous actors. Instead, Phoenix played the troubled Fleck as a real person, albeit one with very realistic mental issues — a clinically insane villain, who is creepy, dangerous, and only seeks to make other people’s lives as bitter as his. Outstanding.
Best Director
THE NOMINEES: Sam Mendes – “1917,” Martin Scorsese – “The Irishman,” Todd Phillips – “Joker,” Quentin Tarantino – “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Bong Joon-ho – “Parasite.”
THE PICK: I’m picking “1917” for Best Original Score and Best Cinematography, so it’s only natural I like Mendes for Best Director. The movie is presented in one shot, though obviously it wasn’t. While you may be able to tell where there are cuts, you hardly notice them because of how good the editing is. War films are hard enough to expertly deliver, but Mendes took an already difficult and expensive production and put a unique and challenging twist onto it. That sealed the deal for me.
Best Picture
THE NOMINEES: “Parasite,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo
Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” THE PICK: I agree with the Screen Actors Guild — “Parasite” was the best film of 2019.. Bong Joon-ho, Many people like “Parasite.” to overlook foreign movies. In fact, “Parasite” is only the 11th foreign-language film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, and none has ever won. I think this South Korean film makes Os-
car history. The movie has a little bit of everything — the story of a poor family that ends up working for a rich family is dark, suspenseful and sometimes funny. “Parasite” parallels the different viewpoints of economic classes without ever being too preachy. The intensity builds throughout the film, with surprises that keep you engrossed. However, it never loses its grip on realism. For being entertaining, nuanced and bold, “Parasite” absolutely deserves to be remembered as the Best Picture of 2019. Matthew Hunter is a senior at Wharton High, a budding journalist and aspiring movie critic who has loved going to the movies since he saw “Robots” in 2005.
