Sports Campus Has ‘Wow’ Factor! STORY & PHOTOS BY JOHN C. COTEY In the past, Wiregrass Ranch developer JD Porter had been so frustrated by the failures of Pasco County to figure out what to do with the 80 acres of land of S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel donated by his family that he quipped they might just take it back. However, these days, Porter is all smiles. He was among a group of local dignitaries and media on Jan. 28 invited to tour that 80 acres of land, or more specifically, the still-underconstruction $44-million Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County that now stands tall upon it. “It’s really good to see it actually RADD Sports CEO Richard Blalock, Pasco County tourism director Adam Thomas, District 2 come to fruition and come out of Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore and RADD Sports marketing director Jannah Nager the ground,” said Porter, who has unveil the new logo for the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County on Jan. 28, prior to giving the first-ever hard-hat tours of the new sports facility to local media and VIPs. championed some kind of athletic facility on the property for nearly quite frequently, Richard Blalock, the could almost hear the squeaking of two decades. “Sometimes, patience is shoes and swishing of basketball nets CEO/founder of RADD Sports, said required.” it never gets old to him. as Ajax Building Corp. project manWhile the indoor/outdoor “I couldn’t sleep last night,” ager Marshall Quarles led a dozen or sports complex won’t be completed so media members through the mas- said Blalock, whose private company until July, it is beginning to take is managing the complex, which is a sive, 98,000-sq.-ft. structure. shape. RADD Sports beat out three other companies in 2016 for the right to develop the property, ending years of frustration. However, what was originally earmarked to be a national tennis center back in 2001, and after that, a failed attempt headed up by former Major League Baseball star Gary Sheffield to build 19 baseball fields with on-site dormitories in 2015, is now just months away from opening as potentially the premier sports complex in Florida. The state-of-the-art indoor sports facility primarily will be home to basketball (the building can be configured as eight regulation-sized courts), volleyball (up to 16 courts) and cheerleading, although Blalock says it can be configured to accommodate as many as 14 different sports. The building also will house a large fitness area, kitchen, concession stand and various meeting and training rooms. To the left (and south) of the main entrance into the indoor facility will be two outdoor soccer fields, and there also is room for an open-air See “Sports Campus” on page 4.

I wouldn’t. It would still have been my job — and my privilege — to hear what our Vice President and Governor had to say and report that news to you. Some of the 36 people who protested outside the “Keep America Great” rally that brought VP Mike Pence and Gov. De Santis to the Venetian Event Center at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church seemed more concerned about the fact a partisan political rally — free or not — was being held inside a building on church grounds, even if that building technically isn’t the church itself. And, the obvious motivating influence for members of both political parties who came out that day was indeed Pres. Donald Trump, who is arguably the most polarizing President in our history, whether you agree with everything — or nothing — he says and does. But, with the crowd inside the building estimated at anywhere from 800-1,000 people for the free rally, it was clear that the vast majority of the people who came out that day — with cars parked along Cross Creek Blvd. almost back to BBD — were there to hear the VP tout the President’s successes the past three years and throw their support behind giving Trump and Pence (and De Santis) “Four More Years,” the rallying cry Pence reiterated multiple times. De Santis, who introduced Pence, was called “the most popular Governor in the U.S., with a 76-percent approval rating” by Florida’s Republican Party chair Joe Gruters. Then, De Santis touted his biggest successes — the strongest Sanctuary City ban in the country, raising starting salaries for all public school teachers in Florida to $47,000 per year and eliminating Common Core standards for our students, to name a few. The Governor then introduced Pence by focusing on Pres. Trump’s successes and the VP’s leadership on several key issues, especially the revitalization of the U.S. space program and the enhancement of our military. Then, Pence said, “Four more years is my reason to be here. I stand with President Trump. Florida said yes to Trump in 2016 and Florida will say yes to four more years. An editorial by Gary Nager

Meanwhile, those carrying signs outside the rally had a completely different viewpoint: For example, New Tampa resident George Kaufmann said, “This is my first protest ever, and I was at Columbia University (in NYC) during the student riots and I didn’t protest then. But, this administration is worse than what we were facing in 1968.” As for the VP, Kaufmann said, “Pence is a spineless toady and a religious fundamentalist. Even though I want Trump out, Pence would not be a good replacement.” Whether anyone liked it or not, this truly was Democracy in action and I thought it was pretty cool to be there for it.

Wiregrass Sports: Campus Expected To Further Propel Pasco’s Sports Tourism Continued from page 1.
amphitheater, playgrounds and can host concerts and other outdoor events. As part of the project, Mainsail Development Group, Inc. will build a four-story, 128-room Residence Inn by Marriott just a few feet from the sports campus’ main entrance, according to site plans filed with the county on Jan. 22. Another hotel, a Fairfield Inn, opened on adjacent Wiregrass Ranch property in 2018 and is within walking distance of the facility. The sports campus is expected to be a huge boon for Pasco’s growing sports tourism, which was re-branded as the “Florida Sports Coast” last year. Adam Thomas, the county’s tourism director, said that Pasco drew more than one million tourists last year, and 87 percent indicated they would return for future vacations. Thomas also said he believed that once the facility has been completed, people will be lining up from all over the country to get their youth sporting events hosted there. The campus is scheduled to host a volleyball tournament in September to kick things off, with a half-dozen more tournaments already on the schedule. “The wow factor is definitely there when you walk in,” Thomas said. “It’s not even done, and you can see the magnitude of this facility.” The $17-billion youth sports market in the U.S. continues to grow, and the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County is poised to grab its share
of that market on the weekends. However, Blalock also said that the local community will also be served by the facility, especially during the week. “We’re excited to have it open at 6 a.m. with local seniors, all the way to 10 p.m. with the kids, and then the weekends (with youth sports events),” Blalock says. “We’re excited about all of it.” Blalock, the former recreation director for the city of Newberry, FL, said this is the biggest project RADD Sports has tackled. He also said that architects and engineers developed a facility in Alachua where the basic design is similar, but the Wiregrass Ranch campus is almost three-times larger. In fact, he hopes the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County will become the model for future projects, and he envisions building four more in Florida. “This is the prototype,” he said. “We hope these plans can go on the shelf (when we’re done) and we can just pull them and keep going.”
From tennis courts to baseball diamonds to basketball, volleyball and cheerleading, the journey has been a long one. Porter, however, says it couldn’t have ended any better. He looks forward to seeing how the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County impacts the area, and is glad the final product didn’t just focus on singular sports, like the previous tennis and baseball projects, but rather became a facility that offers something for everyone. “It’s probably one of the most rewarding projects to come out of the ground here,” Porter said. “We took this project and said, ‘Hey, how can we retool this to make it benefit everybody?’ We came back (with something) that is probably much better than what anyone envisioned 10-15 years ago.” For sponsorship and other information about the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County, email Jannah@RADDSports.com or visit RADDSports.com.

Stunner: Earth Fare, We Hardly Knew Ya! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Well, that was fast. In a rather stunning move, Earth Fare, Wesley Chapel’s first — and only — large green grocer, is closing all of its stores, including the Cypress Creek Town Center location on the north side of S.R. 56. In a press release last week, the North Carolina-based grocer announced it was liquidating all of its stores nationwide, and that liquidation sale was to begin immediately. Even store fixtures could be had, the release noted. “Earth Fare has been proud to serve the natural and organic grocery market, and the decision to begin the process of closing our stores was not entered into lightly,” the company said in the press release. “We’d like to thank our Team Members for their commitment and dedication to serving our customers, and our vendors and suppliers for their partnership.” The Wesley Chapel location will likely not make it to its first anniversary, when more than 100 shoppers lined up on Feb. 19, 2019, eager to be some of the store’s first customers. “A gut punch,” says Hope Kennedy (formerly Allen), the CEO of the North
Many Wesley Chapel residents are hopeful that either Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods will move into what will soon be the former Earth Fare location north of S.R. 56.
Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. Kennedy said she had recently read about Earth Fare closing a store in Gainesville on Jan. 11 after only four years. However, she still didn’t think the Wesley Chapel store, which was the 12th for the company in Florida, was in any danger. “It is very shocking,” Kennedy says. “I thought we would be immune from those
closures because it was so recently opened.” On a VIP tour of Earth Fare a week before it opened, CEO/president Frank Scorpiniti touted the quality of Earth Fare’s organic products, which do not contain high-fructose corn syrup, artificial fats, colors, sweeteners, or preservatives, or meats that were bred with antibiotics or growth hormones.
The chain had a “boot list” — a long list of banned ingredients it does not allow in anything sold in any Earth Fare store. At the time, Scorpiniti said the Wesley Chapel opening was just the beginning of an aggressive plan to expand Earth Fare’s footprint. At the time, the company was operating 50 stores, and Scorpiniti said he expected there to be more than 100 locations within a few years. Earth Fare, which was founded in Asheville, NC, in 1975, said its financial struggles were too much to overcome, and hinted that its efforts to overcome those struggles had failed. “While many of these initiatives improved the business, continued challenges in the retail industry impeded the company’s progress as well as its ability to refinance its debt,” the press release said. “As a result, Earth Fare is not in a financial position to continue to operate on a go forward basis. As such, we have made the difficult, but necessary decision to commence inventory liquidation sales while we continue to engage in a process to find potential suitors for our stores.” There was still some inventory available at our press time on Feb. 6, but everything was being discounted and most items were literally flying off the shelves.

A Stark Reminder About The Threat of Human Trafficking By LIBBY BALDWIN It seemed fitting that a classic Florida sunset — vibrant slashes of pink, purple and orange — marked the beginning of Light Up The Night, an annual event created to raise education and awareness about human trafficking, The free event, held right around sunset on Feb. 1 on the upper level parking garage at The Shops at Wiregrass by the Pasco County-based Human Trafficking Foundation (HTF), featured musical performances, local vendors, refreshments, activities for children and teenagers, and the Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse on horseback. Also appearing were survivors of human trafficking, including Edie Rhea, who told those in attendance that she was sexually abused and trafficked from age 8-17 by her mother’s boyfriend, after he convinced her mother to move to Tampa from their hometown of Baltimore, MD. “Moving us was very smart on his part, because it got us completely away from all our friends and family,” said Rhea, 51, who now lives in North Tampa and serves as Executive Director of Healing Root Ministry, a faith-based nonprofit that assists female trafficking victims over the age of 18 with housing, life skills training and obtaining GEDs. Rhea, who at age 12 was impregnated and then forced into having an abortion by a man who had purchased her, found herself on the street at 17 with no education or basic skills after her mother had kicked out her and her trafficker. She met up with a man named David, who used to buy drugs from her mother, and the two began a relationship. Today, 34 years later, they are happily married with five children, three adults and two under the age of ten they recently adopted. “When we were first married, I had lots of affairs, because I really believed that every time a man spoke to me, I had

Helping Those Who Help Victims
According to HTF, it is the second-largest criminal enterprise in the world, behind drug trafficking, with an estimated 40.3 million current victims worldwide. Between 15,000-18,000 are trafficked annually into the U.S. alone, and Florida currently ranks third in the nation for calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The Tampa Bay area, says the foundation, is usually in the top three cities in the state for trafficking. In 2017, Pasco County became the first “Trafficking-Free Zone” in the country. This distinction, given by the U.S. Institute Against Human Trafficking, intends to send a message to traffickers that they are being watched, thereby reducing the demand for their victims. “A lot of people believe that this only happens overseas, but it’s also happening here, now, in our own backyard,” said Rhea, who spends 65 hours every week running Healing Root pro-bono. Even as the temperature dropped into the low 50s with chilly winds at the event at the Shops, attendees talked with vendors, pledged donations, and enjoyed hot cocoa, popcorn and cotton candy to the backdrop of performances from the Northwest Community Church
Several organizations, including Healing Root, received beneficiary funds from HTF at the event. “The whole idea of Light Up The Night was simply that this is such a dark crime,” said Cpl. Alan Wilkett, HTF chairman and commander of the Pasco County Human Trafficking Task Force. “This criminal activity is probably the darkest crime that I’ve ever investigated,” said Wilkett, 58, who has been in law enforcement for 27 years, “and I’ve had the opportunity to investigate just about everything you can imagine.” Wilkett described human trafficking as a “relatively young crime,” pointing out that there was no official charge

Permitting Snafu Aside, Axes Start Flying March 7! Michael and Alecia Esenwein had hoped to have their new, hip axethrowing hangout already opened, but permitting issues have called for a change of plans. The Kilted Axe, which will still be the first new business to open in The Grove since developer Mark Gold purchased it late last year, is now expecting to have its grand opening on Saturday, March 7, 5 p.m., although axe-throwing leagues may start a few days before that. The Kilted Axe held a Friends & Family soft opening on February 8 (check out our video on our Facebook page) and then closed back down to put on the finishing touches. The latest entry into the Wesley Chapel nightlife scene is located right across the street from The Grove offices at 6027 Wesley Grove Blvd. It features multiple axe-throwing lanes, indoor and balcony seating, and will serve beer, wine and bar food. The Esenweins have fashioned an upscale, rustic feel (photo) to their new place. “Just a few things to get taken care of, and we ready to go,” says Alecia. The Taste Has A New Name, But Sports Fair Sunday In Zhills! at the Wiregrass Sports Campus Promises The Same Great Food By JOHN C. COTEY soccer of Pasco County and former Tampa Bay It may always be the Taste of New Tampa to those who have been attending the area’s premier food event since it first began in 1995, but this year, it’s going by a new name: The Taste of North Tampa Bay. The event, which featured 35 restaurants and beverage distributors and drew roughly 2,000 people last year, will be held at the AdventHealth Center Ice for the third consecutive year on Sunday, March 29, noon-4 p.m. Organizer and Rotary Club of New Tampa member Karen Frashier said the name change was for copyright purposes and to bring the event in line with the North Tampa Bay Chamber, which owns the rights to the event and its name. She said the new name may also help the event draw restaurants from a larger area. “We have found that to be true,” Frashier says. “We’ve had restaurants applying from all over the area, all the way out to Odessa.” Frashier says last year’s People’s Choice Restaurant Winner, Bahama Breeze, has already committed to participate in the event again this year, although she had not yet provided us with a list of the other restaurants

Your CBD Store Wesley Chapel Offers Relief Options! products over opioids and other addictive and sometimes dangerous drugs prescribed by doctors. “We are invested in our customers,” Ashley says. “We want to know if they used it, if they have questions, how they feel and if we need to adjust their dosage.”
By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Lisa Feigel’s introduction to the power of cannabidiol, or CBD, happened in an unlikely place: Waupaca, WI. It was there that her best friend, tired of listening to Lisa complain about her Fibromyalgia — which causes widespread muscle and joint pain — insisted she try CBD. “I was like, ‘Don’t get me into that,’” Lisa recalled. Now, Lisa is so into it, she owns two Your CBD Stores, including the first location in Wesley Chapel, open since August and located in the Freedom Plaza at 30044 S.R. 54. CBD helped relieve Lisa’a aches and pains, as well as various joint issues she was suffering from. She says she has become a true believer, and is hoping to provide the same relief to others. Her daughter, Ashley Tillett, a former teacher, manages the store. Lisa introduced Ashley, who suffered from both joint pain and anxiety, to CBD, and her life has been changed as well. Both ladies are eager to answer any questions their customers might have and guide them to the right solutions. “They can be skeptical,” Lisa says,

Some of the trepidation by customers stems from the link CBD has to the cannabis plant, which historically has a strong medicinal footprint, but hasn’t always had a great reputation. Marijuana is a variety of cannabis, and contains more than 0.3% percent of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the ingredient that gets you “high.” Hemp is also a variety of cannabis — it is often called a cousin of marijuana — but it contains less than 0.3% of THC. CBD is derived from hemp and basically provides all of the health benefits of cannabis — without the high. Studies to date are limited, but CBD has been touted for its effectiveness in treating childhood epilepsy by stopping the onset of seizures, and proponents says it can help relieve stress, inflammation and joint pain, as well as other physical and neurological maladies. While CBD research is still in its infancy, some of the studies conducted have produced encouraging results when it comes to managing pain and inflammation with arthritis, as well as anxiety. “You use Ambien if you need to sleep. a growth explosion across the country, and regulation is growing stronger. But, Lisa warns, all CBD stores and their products are not created equal. With more than 600 locations nationwide, Your CBD Store focuses on quality products, with third-party testing and QR codes on the bottles if you want to check out the lab reports. SunMed CBD products is the exclusive supplier to Your CBD Stores. They have their own farms in Denver, CO, where they grow hemp, and the processing of those plants takes place in Florida. SunMed touts its Co2 extraction process for eliminating the need for chemical solvents, while producing a higher quality, full-spectrum CBD. After the Co2 extraction process, the CBD is processed again to remove even that small amount of THC to create SunMed CBD’s broad-spectrum offerings. Full-spectrum products contain 0.3% of THC, which is the legal limit. While just the non-THC, broad-spectrum CBD oil alone can relieve pain and alleviate stress, sometimes it is more effective in combination with THC. Lisa says the full-spectrum CBD products are generally her biggest sellers.

Innovative Treatment For Depression Available At Florida TMS Clinic By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN As Khaled Bowarshi, MD, studied to be a psychiatrist and internist, he realized that treating depression with pills has proven not to be the best way to go. With undesirable side effects and even failures where some medications sometimes don’t work for some people, Dr. Bowarshi wanted to be part of the future of helping people in a more effective way. In November 2019, he opened Florida TMS Clinic in the Cypress Glen Professional Park in Wesley Chapel, just north of S.R. 56. Here, he offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS for short. TMS is a treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain known to be responsible for depression. It is a safe, proven, FDAcleared, non-drug therapy with no known systemic side effects. Dr. Bowarshi is Board-certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry. After earning his medical (M.D.) degree from Damascus University in Syria in 2010, Dr. Bowarshi was selected to complete his residency in a prestigious program at West Virginia University in Charleston. He spent five years learning both specialties in an integrated program. “The idea of doing two specialties
more effective, that’s going to get more patients better faster.” That’s where, he says, TMS therapy comes in. “We are targeting the centers of the brain that are responsible for depression,” he explains, “and stimulating the area to get somebody depression-free as soon as possible.” He also believes that TMS, which is a form of what’s called neuromodulation, also will be used in the future to treat anxiety, OCD, PTSD and maybe even smoking cessation. While TMS is a newer therapy, it is FDA-approved and supported by scientific research. At Florida TMS Clinic, Dr. Bowarshi says the types of therapy that are offered are the most cutting-edge. “We used the most advanced technolDr. Khaled Bowarshi wants anyone still suffering from depression, especially anyone who has ogy in this field, which is navigated TMS,” not seen results from taking antidepressant medications, should visit him at the Florida TMS says Dr. Bowarshi. also offer an alternative. “We try to bring the cost down so patients can pay out of pocket for the treatment (if they have to),” he says. The advanced technology at Florida TMS Clinic also goes beyond the type of treatment offered. “We have a patient portal that is very intuitive,” explains Dr. Bowarshi. “Patients can text me directly through the portal in a secure fashion, and I reply almost immediately.” In addition, the office is paperless, with all forms being completed on secure tablets, in a way the doctor calls “convenient and advanced.”

Dr. Bowarshi says the typical protocol is six weeks of one session a day, five days a week. Laurie, who is currently receiving TMS treatment and asked that we only use her first name, says she’s been taking medication for depression for years, but doesn’t want to continue on medication because of the side effects. So, she stopped taking pills, and decided to try something different. While she hasn’t yet completed her TMS treatment at Florida TMS Clinic, she says she can already see a big change. “I started on New Year’s Eve and go five days a week,” she says. “So far, I’m very optimistic. I love going because of the doctor and the staff. They have this great attitude and optimism that life’s going to be different, and I’m seeing it day by day.” Dr. Bowarshi says he also tries to make the treatment affordable for patients. He admits it can be challenging to get insurance companies to agree to pay for the TMS therapy, with patients sometimes needing to show up to four failures using antidepressants. He says he and his staff advocate for their patients to be pre-authorized for the TMS treatments by their insurance companies, but they Neighborhood News

Florida TMS Clinic offers a free consultation to anyone interested in TMS therapy. “We do a full psychiatric evaluation first,” explains Dr. Bowarshi. “Sometimes we tell the patient that TMS is not the right step for them, and then we direct them what to do next, all for free.” But usually, Dr. Bowarshi says he does recommend TMS. He invites anyone suffering from depression to see him for the free consultation, even if it’s just to learn more about the options available. “If you have been suffering from depression for a long time and you have tried many medications before with those medications not helping or causing side effects, I think you owe it to yourself to look into the alternative of TMS,” says Dr. Bowarshi. “I’d like to invite you for that free consultation just to learn about TMS directly from an expert.” He adds, “Your happiness, your quality of life, is the most important thing, and we can’t just postpone it. We have to get better and we have to get better now.” Florida TMS Clinic is located at 26843 Tanic Dr., Suite 101, in the Cypress Glen Professional Park, just north of S.R. 56, about a mile east of the I-75 exit (behind MINI of Wesley Chapel). Berkshire Hathaway Has Passion For Wesley Chapel Real Estate By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN Twenty years ago, Veronica Davidson had broken up with Justin Timberlake and taken Britney Spears’ place in the girl band Innosence and was touring the world on its biggest pop stages. When it was time for her to leave the music scene, Veronica (photo) settled in the Tampa Bay area and began selling real estate, building a team that propelled her career and allowed her to hone her leadership skills. After 16 years of selling real estate, on July 1 she became the market president and managing Broker for the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills offices of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group (FPG), located near I-75 on S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel. In this role, she provides training, support and coaching to agents and manages the day-to-day operations. The current office opened in March of 2018. Prior to that, it was located a couple of miles due west on S.R. 56 at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., in the Shoppes at New Tampa plaza. The New Tampa/Wesley Chapel office is home to about 80 agents and is one of 20 offices under the FPG umbrella. Veronica says the agents are seasoned,
percent over the previous year. She says that the inventory of homes available in both New Tampa and Wesley Chapel is extremely low. In 2020, she expects the Wesley Chapel area to continue to grow, because all of the new developments and amenities will continue to make it a very desirable place to live. “There is a high demand for listings at this time, and it is also a great time for buyers to purchase, with interest rates still incredibly low,” she says. “If you are with an average of 15 years of experience thinking about selling, now could be the each, and are committed to an exception- best time to cash in your equity.” Barry Andrews has built a business al culture, where they practice the compabuying and selling homes and was workny’s mission statement of teamwork, ing with another agent when he stumbled integrity, passion and excellence. They have the attorneys in office, financing people right there in the office, even their own title company. Everything I need, Derek says, ‘Yep, we do that, too.’”
The Buffet Connection
If the name Berkshire Hathaway seems familiar beyond the real estate business, it’s because it is derived from the holding company Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., which is chaired by billionaire financier and company CEO Warren Buffett. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group is part of HomeServices of America, Inc., which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. Locally, what is now called Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group was originally founded in 1959 as Tropical Realty. Dewey Mitchell and Allen Crumbley acquired the business in 1984, then aligned with the Prudential Real Estate Network in 1988. In 2012, Berkshire Hathaway purchased that group.

Wesley Chapel’s Teachers of The Year! Meredith Ward Watergrass Elementary Certified School Counselor
Kimberly Robinson Weightman Middle School
“My favorite thing about being an Elementary School Counselor is getting to work with students in their classrooms, in small groups, and individually to promote social and emotional development... Equipping students with the skills they need to stay safe and to manage their emotions is an essential part of their learning in elementary school.”
“As cliché as it sounds, it’s the kids. Being able to show them how exciting Algebra can be and to watch them catch that excitement like a contagion; to show them that there is ACTUAL Algebra relevance to the real world – that’s the stuff for me.” Christine Costanzo Veterans Elementary Art K-5 “My favorite part of teaching art in elementary school is the excitement that fills the room when students are experimenting with a new technique, medium or art process. I think the art room is a creative outlet that students need, especially these days.” Scott Stewart Wesley Chapel High French 1, 2, 3, AP “Seeing my kids every day. Many stay with me all four years of high school as they progress through our program. I get to bond with them, and it’s heartbreaking when they finally graduate and leave. But that’s our goal and why we’re here.”
Elizabeth Velasquez Seven Oaks Elementary Pre-Kindergarten Varying Exceptionalities “My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the progress that my students make over the two years that they spend with me. Many of my students enter my classroom with minimal skills in different areas of development....however, by the time they move on to kindergarten they have gained so many skills in all areas and have progressed so much in their development. It makes me proud to see all the progress made!”
Jodie Nanni Quail Hollow Elementary 1st Grade Math & Science “My favorite thing about teaching is connecting with the students and experiencing all the successes and growth that they make in one school year.”

Our 2019 Dining Survey Results! Story by Gary Nager Results compiled by Jonathon Cotey
For 2019, as chosen by Neighborhood News Readers
Although 2019 was an even better year for
restaurants in Wesley Chapel than in New Tampa, there’s no doubt that our readers on both sides of the Pasco County line had a lot to say about our local eateries for 2019. In total, we had a record number of right around 1,500 ballots cast this year, surpassing our old record of more than 1,200 a few years ago. And the split of the voters was roughly 900 Wesley Chapel ballots and 600 New Tampa votes submitted this year. We thank young Jonathon Cotey, the son of managing editor John Cotey, who was charged with tallying all of those ballots. Great job, Jonathon! One thing that I know helped stimulate more votes this year was the fact there were far fewer categories. For example, the only way to judge who won categories that didn’t appear on this year ballots — like favorite Latin, Asian, Mediterranean and favorite burgers was to see who received the most votes (five faves per ballot) for favorite restaurant in New Tampa. And, among those winners were Yamato Japanese Steakhouse for your favorite Asian restaurant in Wesley Chapel, followed by Bonsai Sushi, Umu Japanese & Thai, Asian Buffet and Arroy Thai. The Latin restaurant that received the most Favorite Restaurant votes in Wesley Chapel was Chuy’s Tex-Mex, followed by Capital Tacos, Los Vallartas, Rice & Beans and Cantina Laredo. Rice & Beans also received more “Favorite Restaurant in Wesley Chapel” votes than any other newcomer, beating out Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar and Blaze Pizza. The top “Favorite Restaurant in Wesley Chap-

el” vote-getters for Italian restaurants/pizzerias were Noble Crust, followed by 900 Woodfired Pizza, Amici Pizza & Deli, Mellow Mushroom and Little Italy’s. The only really big top-20 surprises this year in Wesley Chapel (at least in my opinion) were First Watch at #4 and Chick-fil-A at #6.
And, The Winners Are...
As always, our readers are the big winners again this year. Selected at random from those 1,500 entries to receive gift cards to the restaurants of their choice were: $100 Gift Card — Debbie Gregory, Meadow Pointe $60 Gift Card — Teshania Wiley-Smith, Pebble Creek $35 Gift Card — Jennifer Burgos, Tampa Palms Congrats to all of this year’s winners!

BEST RESTAURANT... B ahama Breeze Island Grille has only been located on the north side of S.R. 56 for two years or so, but the popular chain continues to attract large numbers of visitors — and votes in our annual Reader Dining Survey — each year it has been open. New general manager Melissa Altamare recently took over for the beloved former GM Jeannie Lafever, but Melissa is a long-time Bahama Breeze employee who helped Jeannie open what we call the Wesley Chapel location. Melissa is equally as friendly as Jeannie and the bottom line is that a lot of people love the whole tropical feel and menu of Bahama Breeze — even though some locals complain that the restaurant seems somewhat out of place here because it’s not located on a body of water. Jannah and I have always been fond of Bahama Breeze’s blackened or almond-crusted fresh catch, as well as the burgers and the ahi tuna salad, and I’m a fan of the churrasco steak pictured top
G
rillsmith has always been among Wesley Chapel’s most popular eateries since it first opened in the Shops at Wiregrass, but a recent menu upgrade to include a truly fresh catch every day has kept it close to the top on my list as well. Try the mashed cauliflower, too!

N
oble Crust has stayed near the top of the favorites list for both yours truly and our readers in WC, not only for its unique “Southern Italian” cuisine, but also the great vibe at the bar. I do still wish there were more choices like the gnocchi appetizer and Chicken Fried Chicken Parm and double pork chop entrées.
left on this page and the braised oxtail and Jamaican sampler platter. Melissa says her favorite dishes are the habañero wings, the jerk chicken pasta and the “tequila sunburn” glazed salmon (bottom left). “But I keep finding new favorites,” she says. “I really do love our food.” And, considering that Bahama Breeze took first place for not only Favorite Restaurant but also Favorite Bar in WC (see next page) with our readers by comfortable margins this year, Melissa and her outstanding staff should continue to have big crowds to contend with at arguably our area’s most spacious freestanding restaurant. — GN
F
irst Watch was the only real surprise for me in our readers’ top-5 in WC, not just because it’s only open for breakfast and lunch but also because the parking and wait times, especially for weekend brunch are so unbearable. Even so, I agree that the menu options are unique and tasty.

00 Degrees Woodfired Pizza also won this year’s “Favorite Pizza in Wesley Chapel” category and owner Steve Falabella’s quick stop in the Shops at Wiregrass has great NY-style and woodfired Neapolitan-style pizza. But, I was glad to see it also get some props as a restaurant because it has yummy pastas & salad, too.

...AND BEST BAR T here’s no doubt that Bahama Breeze Island Grille is popular, but considering the selection of bars and restaurants now located in Wesley Chapel, it was a bit of a surprise to see the popular Darden Restaurants brand take home both our readers’ Favorite Bar in WC and Favorite Restaurant. It probably shouldn’t be so surprising, however, considering that the Bahama Breeze bar has more seats — inside and out — than any other in or near Wesley Chapel. In addition, it’s one of our area’s few live music venues and, Melissa says, “with so many other restaurants and businesses having opened around us, there’s a lot more nearby parking than there was when this location opened.” And of course, for those seeking sweet tropical specialty
drinks, few local hangouts offer the variety that Bahama Breeze does, from a full line of mojitos to cocktail flights to the famous Bahamarita, or half-priced appetizers during Happy Hour and other bar specials. And, Melissa says, all Bahama Breeze locations will again be celebrating National Margarita Day with $2.22 margaritas all day. Might I suggest a ride-share service to go that day? Bahama Breeze is located at 25830 Sierra Center Blvd., Lutz. For more information, call (813) 949-0779, visit BahamaBreeze. com or see the ad on pg. 39 of this issue. — GN

B
rass Tap, for my money, is truly Wesley Chapel’s premier bar hangout and has only grown in popularity since the nearby Primebar closed in the Shops at Wiregrass. With the cheapest premium full-liquor bar prices at the mall and karaoke, live music and trivia, the Brass Tap is hard to beat.
B
J’s Brewhouse would finish higher on my own list of Wesley Chapel favorites if it just had a few additional seats at its always-packed bar. BJ’s has one of the more-rounded food menus in Wesley Chapel, and reasonable enough prices, it just could use a more bar-friendly configuration, in one editor’s opinion.
T
5
he Basement has long been one of Wesley Chapel’s best-kept secrets, especially since it’s technically located in Lutz. But, its great beer and hard seltzer/wine-based cocktail selection, karaoke and DJ dance music and occasional comedy nights always bring out a lively, fun crowd — and the drink prices are great.
N
oble Crust truly offers one of the great bar scenes in Wesley Chapel, with ultra-premium liquor but still fair prices and usually enough seats to accommodate those who don’t want to sit at a table. Noble Crust was the only place this year other than Bahama Breeze to make the top-5 as both a restaurant & bar.

BEST PIZZA
teve Falabella says he doesn’t have one secret to his success as the owner of 900 Woodfired Pizza — he has many. It starts with the pizza, sure. The New York-style pizza, his best seller, boasts a crispy crust — a little bit of whole milk when making the dough gives it some extra life — sauce derived from six different tomatoes and Grande cheese, which he says is the best around. “It’s all about the cheese,” Falabella says, and he doesn’t mix any other into his choice of mozzarella to cut any corners. But it’s also all about the employees. If you wonder why the food — whether one of 20 different kinds of pizza, specialty pastas like the Tortellini della casa or a big plate or spaghetti or Pesto Genovese — is always delicious, it’s because it’s probably made by the same people that made it last time. Head chef Adrian Luna has
been with Falabella all eight years he has been at the Shops of Wiregrass, as have those providing top-notch service — Cynthia, Bryan and Ivan. “Consistency is crucial, it’s what we do,” Falabella says. “You know you are going to get the best quality ingredients cooked in the best quality way, and if you don’t, we will fix it for you in a second.” For more information about 900 Woodfired Pizza (28152 Paseo Dr.), call (813) 527-6940 or visit 900degreeswoodfirepizza.com. For a little about Steve’s newest venture, Falabella Family Kitchen coming this summer to The Grove, see the ad on pg. 32. — JCC

mici Pizza & Deli dropped to 2nd place in this year’s Reader Survey after winning the Favorite Pizza in WC” title last year and there’s no doubt that the pizza is true New York style and the linguini with white clam sauce is the best (and most authentic) in our area. The new location has been a blessing.
ellow Mushroom definitely has the funkiest decor of all the pizza joints on this list, and it pairs an eclectic environment with equally eclectic offerings like the Funky Q Chicken (BBQ), Holy Shittake (for the mushroom lover), Great White and Kosmic Karma, with a handful of gluten-free pies as well.
izzaMania has never been much lower than the top three or four favorite pizza places with our readers since the day it opened in the Shoppes at New Tampa plaza. PizzaMania offers authentic New York/New Jerseystyle pizza and excellent veal and chicken parmigiana & other Italian specialties.
Y NY Pizza lives up to its name, serving up some pretty tasty NY-style pizza lauded for its sauce-to-cheese balance. One of the most popular items is the thincrust Grandma Pie, with basil, garlic and plum tomatoes. With more than 25 kinds of pizza, as well as wings and sandwiches, NY NY has something for everyone.

BEST DESSERT N
othing Bundt Cakes arrived in Wesley Chapel quietly in March of 2017. It was that day that its unique offering of tiny, moist bundt cakes with mouthwatering cream cheese icing nearly stole the show at the Taste of New Tampa. Competing against more than 35 restaurants, Nothing Bundt Cakes finished third overall in attendee voting. The next year, Nothing Bundt Cakes opened at the Shops of Wiregrass, and now, the shop is your choice for best dessert in Wesley Chapel. “That is great,” says Tammy Mencia, who owns the Wesley Chapel and Carrollwood locations of the dessert franchise with her husband Ralph. “We have had a great reception from the community since we opened.”

airy Queen doesn’t do anything special with its desserts, and maybe that’s the charm for locals — you know what you’re getting. The ice cream is good, the Blizzards are way better than McFlurries, and ice cream sundae, parfaits are easy choices and delicious ice cream cakes are always a treat.

The franchise was started 22 years ago in Las Vegas, with bundt cakes made with all fresh ingredients and the best butter and cream cheese available. The store, according to employees Amanda Burden and Anissa Rivera (pictured, left), is always busy. Tampa Palms Nearly Sweeps Best of New Tampa!
BEST RESTAURANT
S
tonewood Grill & Tavern’s three-peat as our readers’ Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa should come as no surprise. Zip code 33647’s most upscale eatery features great steaks and fresh seafood, plus an always-hoppin’ bar area that helped Stonewood also finish as our readers’ second favorite bar or tavern in New Tampa this year (see next page). For me, Stonewood’s decision to start opening for lunch a year or so ago was a great move. And, even though the menu is a little pricier than what many people want to spend for lunch, the food is great and the quieter, less-crowded atmosphere is perfect for conducting a business meeting or social event. Jannah and I especially enjoy the seared ahi tuna appetizer, the 6- and 9-oz. filet mignon options, the fresh fish (we shared an excellent grilled grouper on our most recent
32
visit) and the fresh, always tasty veggies. In terms of food quality and service, nothing has changed since new managing partner Matt Passardi took over after the beloved Dave Rathbun departed last year, so this favorite 8-location, Florida-based mini-chain can expect to stay at or near the top of our readers’ list every year. The popular Ciccio Cali in Tampa Palms was the second favorite of our readers, with Liang’s Bistro Asian Cuisine coming in third and clearly establishing itself as New Tampa’s favorite Chinese spot. Mr. Dunderbak’s and Acropolis Greek Taverna finished at #s 4 and 5, respectively. — GN

wners John Kuemmel and Shawn Diehl have done exactly what they wanted to do when they decided nearly three years ago to fulfill a 25-year dream they shared of opening their own bar. In the heart of Tampa Palms, they have spun an inventive menu, ice cold beer, premium liquor and a unique atmosphere into our readers’ favorite bar in New Tampa to enjoy a night out. What’s not to like (other than the ridiculously hard questions on Tuesday Trivia Nights)? A bar that has outstanding food — and The Fat Rabbit finished just behind Acropolis (see previous page) as our readers’ sixth favorite restaurant in New Tampa, too — is never a bad thing. The chicken wings are arguably the best around — make sure you check out the Buffalo Garlic Ranch — and there’s even a Real McCoy burger named after former

BEST PIZZA
T
here is no doubt that Harold Hasselback, the owner of the Cappy’s Pizzeria in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center, has never lost sight of what his five Cappy’s locations do best. While some restaurants try to be all things to all people, Cappy’s menu consists mainly of pizza, calzones, salads (like the awesome Greek salad pictured here) and beer. The pizza, which I have described in years past as “thin crust, but not authentic New York-style” and “deep-dish, but not authentic Chicago-style,” has been among our readers’ favorites since Cappy’s first opened in Tampa Palms almost a decade ago, but had never won the title of “Favorite Pizza in New Tampa” — until now. It’s a credit to Hasselback and
his laser focus on what Cappy’s does best — delicious food at great prices — that this long-time favorite (which first opened in Seminole Heights) has ascended to the top of our readers’ Favorite Pizza list. But, it’s not really that big a surprise either. The formula of fantastic food (and beer) in a fun, funky, family atmosphere has been a proven formula for success — and now, a Neighborhood News Reader Award! Cappy’s was followed by Taste of NY, Marco’s, Full Circle and Precinct Pizza as our readers’ favorites in New Tampa. — GN

athy and Chip Byrne have owned the Cold Stone Creamery since it opened on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in 2004, employed hundreds of local kids and delivering thousands and thousands of delicious treats to area residents. Welcome to Cold Stone!, indeed. New Tampa’s favorite desert joint has a fun and friendly staff that delivers a very rich ice cream, which has so much butter fat that Cathy won’t even tell us exactly how much. The ice cream, which is actually made in the back, is scooped onto a cold stone (get it?), and whatever flavors (a heaping spoonful of peanut butter?) and treats (Kit Kats? M&Ms?) your heart desires are folded into it for a frozen delight. Dessert and a show! You can get your ice cream served up in a cup, a cone, or a crunchy waffle cone in a cup,

which is a nice touch considering the generous portions. Ice cream cakes are particularly hot sellers at the New Tampa store, especially the chocolatey ganache-topped Midnight Delight. While being located in front of a movie theater ain’t bad for an ice cream shop, what makes Cold Stone your favorite is that it is a high-quality product and a fun place. Nibbles & Business The Latest & Greatest News In Dining, Shopping & Business In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel!
Aldi, Aussie Grill, Bonefish & Carrabba’s, Oh My!
There’s plenty of action happening these days on both the north and south side of S.R. 56 just west of I-75, but nothing is more anticipated than the Aldi grocery store taking shape in front of Costco. Although no grand opening date has been announced, the signs are up on the outside of the building that looks just a few weeks away from opening. Right across S.R. 56, a number of eateries are going vertical in the Cypress Creek Town Center, including three Bloomin’ Brands restaurants — Carrabba’s Italian
Grill, Bonefish Grill and Aussie Grill by Outback. The local Aussie Grill will be the first-ever freestanding location for the fast-casual eatery that currently only has kiosks at the International Plaza and the Brandon Town Center. After our Neighborhood News Online video came out about the progress on these restaurants last week, a comment on our Facebook page said that the Bonefish on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. south of S.R. 56 would close when the new Bonefish opens, but we had not yet received confirmation about that at our press time. In other news from this area of 56, according to permitting filed with Pasco County, Zukku Sushi is also opening in the Cypress Creek Town Center. Zukku means canvas or cloth in Japanese, and according to the restaurant’s website, the rice is your canvas.
With its first location inside the hip and trendy Armature Works in South Tampa, Zukku specializes in sushi bowls and sushi. — JCC • Meanwhile, on the south side of 56, there’s been lots of progress made on the Main Event Entertainment bowling and kids play place (plus restaurant and bar), the Cigars International superstore (and cigar lounge), as well as on the Rock & Brews restaurant, a newer chain inspired by the rock group KISS and owned in part by band members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. We did not yet have word on when the planned Landry’s-owned Saltgrass Steakhouse would begin going vertical.
Congrats, Kyymara & Esthetics 813!
Congrats go out to Kyymara Rosey, the owner of Esthetics 813 Facial Bar & Med Spa (located in the same plaza on BBD in front of the SuperTarget at Happy Feet Plus) on the packed North Tampa Bay
Chamber ribbon cutting she held on Jan. 23. I wasn’t able to attend the ribbon cutting (above) that day, but Jannah was there (and I have visited since then) and the place is beautiful, elegant and folks are excited about Kyymara and her husband Kurt’s new location and all of the unique cosmetic services offered. Esthetics 813 is located at 1051 BBD. For more info, search “Esthetics813” on Facebook or call (813) 4744486 and please tell Kyymara that I told you about her!
More Gold-en Excitement!
In addition to everything happening along S.R. 56, people in our area also are excited about what’s going on at The Grove shopping center since new owner Mark Gold took over a few short months ago. Gold shared his excitement for the project — including the total overhaul of the long-dormant “Village” section of The Grove and the impending construction of what he

says will be the largest container park in the world — at the Jan. 23 Economic Development Briefing for the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce (NTBC). A packed house heard Gold and NTBC CEO Hope Kennedy (formerly Allen, photo above) provide updates about the project at the Pebble Creek Golf Club, and among the biggest news was the wet zoning of the entire Grove property. “It’ll be pretty cool to be able to get a drink at one of the restaurants and walk the entire property with it,” Hope said.” Gold assured the crowd that he will deliver on everything he’s been promising, “and it’ll happen fast,” he said. “The Grove is going to be something really different, something special, and we already have more than 30 restaurants signed and ready to go.”
Mahana Fresh Opens In New Tampa!
So, the poké bowl craze is in full bloom in New Tampa, as Mahana Fresh, which has an existing location in Bradenton, has just opened on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. just north and west of I-75 (at 17512 Doña Michelle Dr.), in the plaza that also is home to Bay Care Urgent Care (next to Glory Days Grill).
Neighborhood News
Owner Ryan Mortti (above), who previously managed the McDonald’s restaurants on BBD (north of Cross Creek Blvd.) and S.R. 56, warns that Mahana Fresh is “much more than just another poké bowl place.” Ryan says that in addition to the usual ahi tuna and chicken poké bowls, Mahana Fresh also cooks up proteins like grilled steak, teriyaki and Asian BBQ chicken and miso roasted tofu. Plus, there are unique “pour your own” beer taps with a nice variety of beers. Ryan says he is excited to open Tampa’s first Mahana Fresh concept shortly after you receive this issue in your mailbox. “Wait until you try the food,” he told me. “I know this community will love it!” For more info, visit MahanaFresh.com or stop in and please tell Ryan and his staff that Gary from the Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News sent you!
The Gift Box To Close In March?
About a year ago, New Tampa had two unique mom-and-pop boutiques. As of sometime next month, that number will be zero. Last year, Lå Pink Boutique vacated its space in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza and now, we’ve been told that owner

Jennifer Colon will shutter her popular The Gift Box boutique in The Shoppes at The Pointe plaza in Tampa Palms (above) to devote more time to her family.
