Big Changes Planned For AMC Highwoods 20! By JOHN C. COTEY

john@ntneightborhoodnews.com AMC Highwoods 20, the target of recent criticism over its appearance inside and out, may be looking at a major $6-million facelift. According to plans filed by Kansas City-based BRR Architecture with the City of Tampa, the AMC Highwoods 20 location just off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. could be receiving major interior renovations that include an upgraded lobby, new carpet and paint, larger bathrooms and new projection and speaker systems, with roomier recliner seating inside the theaters. AMC Theatres public relations director Ryan Noonan did not confirm any specific enhancements, but did tell the Neighborhood News that “the renovation process is in place” and, if permitting goes smoothly, it could begin sometime around June and be completed by the end of 2020. A woman who identified herself as one of the AMC Highwoods 20 managers declined comment. Noonan said that the New Tampa location would likely receive the same upgrades AMC is putting in at many of its other theaters across the country. “The new recliner seating is always the star of the show,” he said. According to the plans, the renovations on the 82,815-sq.-ft. movie theater would cost roughly $6.6 million dollars.

“That’s great news,” said Tampa City Council member, Hunter’s Green resident and frequent AMC 20 patron Luis Viera, whose district includes the theater. Viera wrote to AMC’s corporate management in November of 2019 stating that the New Tampa theater was “unkempt and not properly reflecting the exterior standards of New Tampa” and could use some TLC. Many on social media agreed. Posters on various platforms shared their horror stories, while others said they

would rather drive 20 minutes to see a movie in Wesley Chapel. Noonan acknowledged that AMC was aware of the bad press the theater had recently received. “They have been discussing (renovating) the Highwoods 20 before any of that came to light,” said Noonan. An upgrade would be a big boost to New Tampa’s only movie theater, which opened in 1999 and pales in comparison to the nearby and newer Cobb Grove 16

in Wesley Chapel when it comes to amenities like food, comfortable seating and offering a more modern experience. AMC is currently renovating a number of its nearly-700 theaters across the country and has been for the last decade, Noonan said. He said there are less than a handful of new theaters built by AMC each year, with the company instead focusing of renovating its existing properties with better and reserved seating, touch-screen ticketing kiosks, eco-friendly restrooms and a full-service MacGuffins Bar. Any AMC Highwoods 20 renovations would typically not cause the entire theater to be closed, just certain sections. Most of the 20 auditoriums will have their current capacities reduced to make room for the larger, more comfortable seating. Auditorium 4, for example, currently has seating for 284, but plans indicate that once renovated, there would only be seating for 140. “There will be a 40-60 percent reduction in seating,” Noonan said. “With the new seating it’s no longer an elbow-toelbow experience.” Viera said he hopes those that have been unhappy will support the effort to modernize the theater. “They are taking the steps to fix it, and I would hope New Tampa recognizes that and supports it,” Viera said. “I'm thrilled to see this happen.”

The Unexpected Local Effect Of The Coronavirus Outbreak An editorial by Gary Nager According to a report from the renowned Johns Hopkins Medicine, the novel coronavirus, formally known as Covid-19, has spread to 28 countries and regions since it was first identified in mainland China in December last year. Globally, it has now infected more than 73,000 people and killed more than 2,000 (at our press time), the vast majority still in mainland China. Influenza, or “the flu,” and Covid-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, are both infectious respiratory illnesses. Although the symptoms of Covid-19 and the flu can look similar, the two illnesses are caused by different viruses. And, the fact remains that although the coronavirus’ rapid spread and the number of people it already has killed in a very short time — who had ever even heard of it six months ago? — is frightening, the flu currently affects and kills 100-300 times more people (anywhere from 250,000 to nearly 650,000, depending upon whose numbers you use) every year, not just the last few months, the world over. And, the fact remains that the easiest way to avoid getting either of these two potentially fatal illnesses is getting a flu shot and proper, frequent hand-washing, especially immediately after coming in contact with someone you suspect might have more than “just a cold.” No, considering how debilitating both the flu and Covid-19 can be, you’re not being rude if you’re not so quick to shake the hand of every stranger you come in contact with (much less want to stand near anyone who is sneezing, even if they say “It’s just my allergies”), especially when this year’s flu season continues to be such a doozy. On the other hand, the recent worldwide backlash against people who appear to be Chinese to those of us who aren’t Asian (even though the majority of Americans don’t think people from China look any different than people from Thailand, Japan, Korea or Vietnam) makes no sense at all. First of all, the World Health Organization and other governmental agencies around the world are tracking every known case of the coronavirus. Second, anyone who has been on a cruise ship or airplane from anywhere near the new illness’ epicenter of Wuhan, China, is being quarantined and then closely monitored for any sign of Covid-19. Third, absolutely no one is closely monitoring the more than 120,000 people of all races, religions and ethnic groups who have been hospitalized for the flu during the 2019-20 flu season, or the hundreds of thousands more who were treated by doctors without being hospitalized or the thousands more who somehow were able to beat back the disease without even seeing a doctor. People getting sick enough to die from their illnesses during the cold and flu season isn’t a Chinese problem. This scary new malady may have started in one particular area of one particular country, but that doesn’t mean that anyone of Chinese or Asian descent, especially if they live anywhere but in the Hubei province of south central China, is any more likely to be afflicted with Covid-19 than you are, especially if they haven’t visited their native country since the virus started. Oh, and here in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, we can rest a little bit easy (for now, at least) knowing that none of the few cases of Covid-19 that have been confirmed in the U.S. have found their way to Florida. But, I know there are a lot of seemingly normal people who are losing their minds over the coronavirus outbreak, just as they have over many Neighborhood News

other issues that don’t need to be debated here. But, when I read that Chinese restaurants from Australia to Florida have lost 20-70 percent of their usual business — or had to close their doors altogether — in the less than three months since the outbreak first hit, well, that’s where this lifetime Chinese food lover has to draw the line. This isn’t the time for anti-Chinese sentiment, much less for hating Chinese-Americans or...Heaven help me, Chinese food. So, whether your favorite local Chinese restaurant is Liang’s Bistro, Ho King or my favorites — Fushia Asian Bistro here in Tampa Palms and Yummy House on E. Hillsborough Ave. — or any other, now is the time to do yourself and the family that owns that eatery a favor and get yourself some egg rolls and Yang Chow fried rice. And, please tell them I sent you!

Wharton Sharpshooter Just Misses Olympics! By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Wharton High senior Matt Sanchez has more than just Olympic dreams. Earlier this month, those dreams nearly came true. Competing at the Air Rifle U.S. Olympic Trials Feb. 7-9 in Colorado Springs, CO, Sanchez battled against 16 of the sharpest shooters in the country, and briefly toyed with making the Olympic team, before falling four points short and settling for third place. He is instead the first alternate for the squad if either of the shooters who finished ahead of him can’t make the trip. The top two finishers – 2016 Olympian Lucas Kozeniesky and University of Kentucky sophomore Will Shaner – will make up the U.S. Olympic Air Rifle team. As the first alternate, Sanchez will only go if either Kozeniesky or Shaner can’t make the trip to Tokyo for the Games, which run from July 24-Aug.9. This Colorado Springs trip was the second part of the Olympic Trials. The first part was held last fall, and Sanchez actually entered the second part in seventh place. “The top two people were way ahead of everyone, so it looked like they were pretty much going to make it,” Sanchez said. However, the second-place shooter from Part I had a terrible first day, and Sanchez was excellent. Shooting at a target the size of a size 12-point font period from 10.94 yards away from a standing position, he scored a 627.5 (out of 654), and made a big move up to third-place overall. Sanchez made up four points on the first day, and needed to do it again the final day to possibly nab the second spot on the team. “I didn’t expect to make the team, honestly,” Sanchez says. “But then, things got a little crunchy going into the second day. I thought if I shoot the same thing, I could make it into second place.” Sanchez admits he may have been overthinking on Day Two, and he shot a 624.1, and finished four points behind second-place Shaner. Kozeniesky tied a world record on

Day 2 with a 633.5. “It was a little bittersweet, to be honest,” Sanchez says. “If it was a year ago, and I made third place, I’d be really happy — ‘Oh hey, I got third place at a national competition, I did really good’ — But, seeing that I was only four points away from making an Olympic team and getting to go is a little bittersweet.” Being first alternate is still quite an accomplishment, especially for a 17-year-old balancing high-level national competition with graduating from high school. Sanchez already has signed a scholarship to attend college-shooting powerhouse Matt Sanchez stands inside his Heritage Isles home, 10.9 yards from West Virginia University in his practice target (blue arrow). He has a college scholarship, pretty much a full ride, he’s a member of national teams, he travels the world – China, Korea, Germany, you name it.” Freddy rubs his left forearm. “I’m getting goosebumps just talking about it.” Sanchez might be too cool for goosebumps, but he is now more homed in than ever on making the 2024 Olympic team. By then, he’ll have had four more years of training, this time at top-notch facilities at WVU and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and the memory of 2020 pushing him. “I would have loved to make the Olympic team, but I’m happy with where I am right now,” Sanchez says. “This experience has really pushed me and given me a drive to be a really, really good shooter. I know I need to ensure that, at the next Olympic trials, I won’t miss making the team by a couple of points.”

Sensory Park Has New Home The New Tampa Sensory & Autism Friendly Park, which originally was earmarked to be built on five acres of land behind the BJ’s Wholesale Club on Commerce Palms Dr. in Tampa Palms., is headed to a new site. Now, the park will be constructed in the nearby New Tampa Community Park (NTCP). After concerns were raised by members of the Stafford Place community about parking and noise, Tampa City Council member Luis Viera, who represents New Tampa as part of District 7, began the search for a new site. The sensory-friendly park has been one of Viera’s pet projects since he was elected to the council in 2015. Viera, whose older brother Juan

has autism, successfully fought to get $90,000 included in former Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s 2018 Tampa city budget for Phase 1 of the project, which was allocated for a study and design of the park. Now, that design will be used at the NTCP. Viera said he will make a budget request to finally have the park constructed. He estimates the cost at $1-1.4 million, less than he had originally anticipated. “There are sites located in the New Tampa Community Park that not only get the job done, but due to the presently available parking and other infrastructure, reduce the cost of this effort substantially,” Viera says. — JCC

HGE Opens Largest Sensory Room In County By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN For students who deal with sensory processing disorders such as autism, having a safe, comfortable space to calm down can make a difference in how successful that child is at school. At Hunter’s Green Elementary (HGE), to meet this need, a brand new sensory room was unveiled on January 30. While a few other schools throughout Hillsborough County also have sensory rooms, the one at He is housed in a large classroom, making it the largest in the District. Dubbed the “Comfort Corner” — with fabric softening the room’s lights and translucent curtains dividing it into many separate spaces — it doesn’t feel like a classroom. Filled with quiet areas with dark spaces, hanging hideaway chairs, and weighted blankets, as well as active areas with fidget toys and fine motor skills activities, the room meets the many varied needs of diverse students. “Some kids with autism have a sensory overload,” explains Joni Cagle, HGE’s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher, “while others don’t get enough sensory input. We wanted a place for kids who have differences to feel safe and learn coping strategies to meet them where they are so we can help them to be successful at school.” But, Joni is quick to add, “It’s not just for kids with labels.” She says typical kids who get anxiety before a big test, for example, can come to the room and bounce on a ball for a few minutes to help reduce that anxiety. David and Veronica Mardo have two kids at HGE, a daughter in third grade and a son with special needs in pre-Kindergarten. “This will help my son for sure,” David says. “I think it’s great the school has something like this for him.” To bring the Comfort Corner to

The Comfort Corner at HGE is the Hillsborough County School District’s largest sensory room, thanks to the Sydney Has A Sister foundation.

the school, more than $8,000 worth of equipment – from bouncing balls to rope lights to a weighted blanket in the shape of a hamburger – was donated by a local foundation called Sydney Has A Sister, founded in 2014 by Ernie and Becky Black of Land O’Lakes. Sydney Has A Sister was established to provide scholarships that recognize the sacrifices that typical children make when they have siblings with special needs, such as long hours in doctors’ waiting rooms. It expanded its mission to help provide sensory rooms at schools after seeing one in Jacksonville. “This is our fourth sensory room,” says Ernie. “Some other sensory rooms are a small room or even a longer hallway. The challenge is they don’t have enough space. This is what we envisioned. And, even though it’s large, we’ve created these nooks so it’s not as sterile and the space is intimate.” He says every item chosen for the Hunter’s Green sensory room was intentional, based on the recommendations of specialists and what they have learned creating rooms at other schools. “For example, the way the room has dividers,” explains Ernie. “There can be five kids in here that don’t feel

like they’re in the same room. And, the curtains are transparent so the teachers can still supervise all of them.” He and Veronica believe the Hunter’s Green Comfort Corner will be a model for future rooms. “This is a place that gets kids geared up to learn and focus and gets them back into the classroom,” Ernie says. “That’s the whole point.” He says that Sydney Has A Sister was able to fund the room through the generosity of its sponsors and fundraising events. In addition, a family at the school,

who asked to not be named in this story, provided a donation to purchase additional needed furniture and supplies and ensure the ongoing success of the Comfort Corner. Joni says the total cost of the room is more than $10,000. The good news is that it’s already making a difference. “We’ve seen attention spans increase,” Joni says. “We’ve seen social skills increase. Fine motor skills. Gross motor skills. It really affects the whole child in a positive way.” For more information, visit SydneyHasASister.com.

How’s New Tampa’s Business Climate? By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneightborhoodnews.com

A standing-room-only crowd packed Compton Park in Tampa Palms on Feb. 3 for the unveiling of the initial results of a New Tampa business study, and while the presentation did seem to assuage some of the concerns of those in attendance, the results of that survey are far from conclusive. In fact, because many of the area businesses along Bruce B. Downs Blvd. south of I-75 — meaning Tampa Palms — have not reported data, like earnings and number of employees, to the City of Tampa, the study was only based on businesses along BBD from the I-75 interchange north to County Line Rd. University of South Florida School of Public Affairs director Ron Sanders said the data the study did find south of I-75 “looked funny.” That meant that the closings of Staples, HH Gregg, Bed Bath & Beyond and Casa Ramos, which played a central role in triggering the study, were not included in any conclusions by the USF study, which included input from New Tampa (morning) Rotary Club and North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce members, as

pointed out to Viera (as well as to Mayor Castor while she was running for office), at least north of I-75, seems to paint a rosier picture. The study made a host of recommendations, including creating a chamber of commerce-esque Business Retention & Expansion committee, attracting non-chains and marketing and branding New Tampa. A community slogan — “Something For Everyone” was floated as an example — as well as signage would let people passing through know they are in New Tampa. “I still think it comes down to having a community identity that is amenable to everybody here in New Tampa,” Viera said. “It’s something we should work on, as the study pointed to.” The study’s results, while inconclusive, seemed to be met with enthusiasm by most of the 100 or more people in the crowd at Compton Park. “I still miss my Bed Bath & Beyond, but I do feel better about the business climate,” said longtime Arbor Greene resident Noreen Luetteke. “I think it’s improving. I just hope it stays that way.”

Sports Campus Shows Off Its “Wow” Factor By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com In the past, Wiregrass Ranch developer JD Porter had been so frustrated by the failures of Pasco County to figure out what to do with the 80 acres of land of S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel donated by his family that he quipped they might just take it back. However, these days, Porter is all smiles. He was among a group of local dignitaries and media on Jan. 28 invited to tour that 80 acres of land, or more specifically, the still-under-construction $44-million Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County that now stands tall upon it. “It’s really good to see it actually come to fruition and come out of the ground,” said Porter, who has championed some kind of athletic facility on the property for nearly two decades. “Sometimes, patience is required.” While the indoor/outdoor sports complex won’t be completed until July, it is beginning to take shape. With a little imagination, you could almost hear the squeaking of shoes and swishing of basketball nets as Ajax Building Corp. project manager Marshall Quarles led a dozen or so media members through

RADD Sports CEO Richard Blalock, Pasco County tourism director Adam Thomas, District 2 Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore and RADD Sports marketing director Jannah Nager unveil the new logo for the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County on Jan. 28, prior to leading the first-ever hard-hat tours of the new sports facility. the massive, 98,000-sq.-ft. structure. Although he sees the facility quite frequently, Richard Blalock, the CEO/ founder of RADD Sports, said it never gets old to him. “I couldn’t sleep last night,” said Blalock, whose private company is managing the complex, which is a privatepublic partnership with Pasco County. RADD Sports beat out three other companies in 2016 for the right to

develop the property, ending years of frustration. However, what was originally earmarked to be a national tennis center back in 2001, and after that, a failed attempt headed up by former Major League Baseball star Gary Sheffield to build 19 baseball fields with on-site dormitories in 2015, is now just months away from opening as potentially the premier sports complex in Florida.

The state-of-the-art indoor sports facility (photo on next page) primarily will be home to basketball (the building can be configured as eight regulationsized courts), volleyball (up to 16 courts) and cheerleading, although Blalock says it can accommodate as many as 14 different sports. The building also will house a large fitness area, kitchen, concession stand and various meeting and training rooms. To the left (and south) of the main entrance into the indoor facility will be two outdoor soccer fields, and there also is room for an open-air amphitheater, playgrounds and other outdoor events. As part of the project, Mainsail Development Group, Inc. will build a four-story, 128-room Residence Inn by Marriott just a few feet from the indoor sports facility’s main entrance, according to site plans filed with Pasco on Jan. 22. Another hotel, a Fairfield Inn, opened within walking distance of the project in 2018. The sports campus is expected to be a huge boon for growing the county’s sports tourism, which was branded as the “Florida Sports Coast” last year. Adam Thomas, the county’s tourism director, said that Pasco drew more than one million tourists last year, and 87 percent indicated they would return for future vacations.

Thomas thinks that once the facility has been completed, people will be lining up to get their youth sporting events hosted there. The campus is scheduled to host a volleyball tournament in September to kick things off, with 13 more weekend tournaments already on the schedule at our press time. “The wow factor is definitely there when you walk in,” Thomas said. “It’s not even done, and you can see the magnitude of the facility.” The $17-billion youth sports market in the U.S. continues to grow, and the Wiregrass Sports Campus of Pasco County is poised to grab its fair share of that market. However, Blalock also said that the local community will also be served by the facility, especially during the week. “We’re excited to have it open at 6 a.m. with the seniors, all the way to 10 p.m. with the kids, and then the weekends (with

youth sports events),” Blalock says. “We’re excited about all of it.” Blalock, the former recreation director for the city of Newberry, FL, says this is the biggest project RADD Sports has tackled. He says architects and engineers developed a facility in Alachua where the basic design is similar, but the local facility is almost three-times larger. In fact, he hopes the Wiregrass Ranch campus will become the model for future projects, and he envisions building four more in Florida. “This is the prototype,” he said. “We hope these plans can go on the shelf (when we’re done) and we can just pull them and keep going.” From tennis courts to baseball diamonds to basketball, volleyball and cheerleading, the journey for this campus has been a long one. Porter, however, says it couldn’t have ended any better. He looks forward to seeing how the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County impacts the area, and is glad the final product didn’t just focus on singular sports, like the previous tennis and baseball projects, but rather became a facility that offers something for everyone. “It’s probably one of the most rewarding projects to come out of the ground here,” Porter said. “We took this project and said, ‘Hey, how can we retool this to make it benefit everybody?’ We came back (with something) that is probably much better than what anyone envisioned 10-15 years ago.”

Olympus Pools Is Now Open In Lutz As it Keeps On Growing! By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN After moving the Olympus Pools flagship store from near Tampa International Airport to nearby Lutz (just west of Collier Pkwy. on S.R. 54), the company is getting ready to open a new showroom in Lakewood Ranch, too. With a Grand Opening scheduled for Saturday, March 7, the Lakewood Ranch showroom will serve customers in Bradenton and surrounding areas of Sarasota and Manatee counties. Owner James Staten says Olympus Pools has grown 30 percent each year since he first opened the business in Tampa in 2013. A location in Lakeland opened four years ago. James emphasizes that as it grows, Olympus Pools is not only getting bigger, but also serving its customers better, too. For example, the move to Lutz is a benefit to the many Olympus Pools customers in the Neighborhood News readership areas. “Now, everyone in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel is basically 10 minutes (or so) from us,” he says. The new Lutz store opened last June, making it much easier for those

tion screens have Netflix and a PS4, too. Kids are entertained while their parents give their full attention to creating the pool of their family’s dreams. That pool might include a built-in pool bar, fireplace or fire pit, or even an outdoor kitchen with custom outdoor cabinetry, grilling island with built-in grill, smoker or pizza oven, and other appliances. Olympus Pools can build something fancy or simple and can accommodate virtually any design you can envision in your imagination. James says a pool is a special place that can bring families and friends together. “Whether you’re 2 or 72, you can enjoy being around the swimming pool,” he explains. “There aren’t a lot of activities everyone can enjoy at the same time, but swimming pools are that activity.” He says his main goal is to listen to customers to understand their current lifestyle and learn what type of lifestyle they want to create. Then, Olympus Pools creates the space to bring that lifestyle to life. And, there’s never a rush. “If you want to build a pool in three years, that’s okay. We’ll help everyone. We’re not going anywhere,”

James says. “But, we also have people who come in on a Saturday morning and purchase a pool by lunch.” He says Olympus Pools is committed to helping each person who walks into any of the showrooms get exactly what they need, with the highest quality and best customer service. “Some people may see our premium facility and the quality of service and products and assume we’ll be expensive,” James says. “But, due to my relationships in the industry and the volume of pools we sell, we can negotiate better pricing than an average pool company and pass those savings on to you.” He says Olympus Pools pulled more permits last year than the second and third largest pool companies combined. “We built 600 pools last year and no two were the same,” he says. “We get so many referrals from people who tell their friends about us,” he adds. “We stand behind our work. We don’t stop until they’re satisfied.” Jay Sousa is one of those customers who heard from a co-worker that he should choose Olympus Pools, and now he recommends the company, too. Jay says he moved to a neighborhood off Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa from New York at the end of last summer. “The house didn’t have a pool, so that was non-negotiable for the family,” he says.

Neighborhood News

Jay liked that Olympus Pools gave him the very best service and the best possible pool in the market. He says the same options with other builders would have been more expensive and that he’s been happy with his decision ever since. “The construction was very well coordinated,” Jay says. Now, he and his family, including two kids ages 7 and 11, have been swimming in the pool almost daily. “It’s been a life changer for us,” says Jay. “It’s a beautiful pool and I’m really happy.”

new locations and built more pools, James says the thing he’s most proud of is the growth of the company’s charitable programs and partnerships. He says that last year, Olympus Pools partnered with the YMCA to provide “Learn To Swim” programs, which grants scholarships to kids who can’t afford swim lessons. “If you have a pool,” James says, “it’s pretty easy to learn to swim in just a few days. But, if you don’t have a pool, it’s not. This is near and dear to our hearts.” Olympus Pools also sponsors classroom needs in local schools through DonorsChoose.org, especially for low-income schools.

“We believe income shouldn’t be an impediment to learning — whether it’s learning to swim or learning in school,” James says. Olympus Pools also supports James and Alexis’ son, Jacob, who holds a food drive to support Feeding Tampa Bay every year for his birthday. “We donate $100 for every pool sold,” says James. “Last year, we provided 50,000 meals for families in our community. The year before it was 8,000 meals, and before that it was 5,000. The fact that we could grow it that much meant a lot to my family and our company.” And, Olympus Pools continues to add even more charitable programs. James says he is currently working on partnerships with local law enforcement in each of the areas where Olympus Pools showrooms are located, to support them when there are tragedies in the law enforcement family. “We live here, our kids go to school here, and we want to give back,” says James. “As we grow, it allows us to do more.” The newest Olympus Pools showroom is located at 21859 S.R. 54 in Lutz. It is open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit OlympusPoolsFL.com, call (813) 983-7854, or see the ad on page 24 of this issue.

Berkshire Hathaway Has Passion For New Tampa Real Estate By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN Twenty years ago, Veronica Davidson had broken up with Justin Timberlake, taken Britney Spears’ place in the girl band Innosence and was touring the world on its biggest pop stages. When it was time for her to leave the music scene, Veronica (photo) settled in the Tampa Bay area and began selling real estate, building a team that propelled her career and allowed her to hone her leadership skills. After 16 years of selling real estate, on July 1 she became the market president and managing Broker for the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills offices of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group (FPG), located near I-75 on S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel. In this role, she provides training, support and coaching to agents and manages the day-to-day operations. The current office opened in March of 2018. Prior to that, it was located a couple of miles due west on S.R. 56 at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., in the Shoppes at New Tampa plaza. The New Tampa/Wesley Chapel office is home to about 80 agents and is one of 20 offices under the FPG umbrella. Veronica says the agents are seasoned, with an average of 15 years of experience each, and are committed to an exceptional culture, where they practice the company’s mission statement of teamwork, integrity, passion and excellence. They know the area and the market, and Veronica says they all share sincerity and a true desire to help people. They do so using all of the resources of their global company. “We are solution providers for all of people’s real estate needs,” Veronica explains, “including every aspect of property management, commercial real estate, insurance and title.” Veronica says the volume of home sales closed in Wesley Chapel is up 40

16

percent over the previous year, and the average sales price is up nearly seven percent over the previous year. She says that the inventory of homes available in both New Tampa and Wesley Chapel is extremely low. In 2020, she expects the Wesley Chapel area to continue to grow, because all of the new developments and amenities will continue to make it a very desirable place to live. “There is a high demand for listings at this time, and it is also a great time for buyers to purchase, with interest rates still incredibly low,” she says. “If you are thinking about selling, now could be the best time to cash in your equity.” Barry Andrews has built a business buying and selling homes and was working with another agent when he stumbled across a listing that interested him online about eight months ago. He requested info from Berkshire Hathaway agent Derek Cronin. “Derek was eager to work with me and build a relationship and be on my side,” says Barry, who adds that his experience with other agents had previously been less than stellar. “We’ve developed into a team, and I feel like he’s a partner of mine in my business.” Barry says he likes working with Berk-

shire Hathaway because, “Everyone knows the name; and it’s a reputable name.” Barry says he appreciates that the company offers many services related to his real estate transactions in-house. “I like that everything is right there together,” he says. “It’s a one-stop shop. They have the attorneys in office, financing people right there in the office, even their own title company. Everything I need, Derek says, ‘Yep, we do that, too.’”

The Buffet Connection

If the name Berkshire Hathaway seems familiar beyond the real estate business, it’s because it is derived from the holding company Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., which is chaired by billionaire financier and company CEO Warren Buffett. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group is part of HomeServices of America, Inc., which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.

Locally, what is now called Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group was originally founded in 1959 as Tropical Realty. Dewey Mitchell and Allen Crumbley acquired the business in 1984, then aligned with the Prudential Real Estate Network in 1988. In 2012, Berkshire Hathaway purchased that group.

Serving The Community

The agents of the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel office are committed to serving the community around them. They hold a food and toy drive for Metropolitan Ministries during the holiday season, and they support the Berkshire Hathaway FPG charity, called Sunshine Kids, which gives children who have terminal diseases a week in Orlando to go to Disney and Universal. In addition, the company added an event on Feb. 13 called “Be The Sunshine,” in which the agents took the day off to serve a charitable organization. The New Tampa/Wesley Chapel agents chose the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch in Safety Harbor, where they will spent the day doing beautification projects to clean up the 23-acre property. Veronica says the kind of people who will take a day off work to serve others are the kind of people Berkshire Hathaway FPG wants working at the company.

For Trusted Tax Help This Season, Turn To Murtha & Murtha, LLC By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com Tom Murtha and his son Patrick do more than just crunch numbers during tax season. Partners and owners of their own accounting firm — Murtha & Murtha, LLC — in the Seven Oaks Professional Park off S.R. 56 (across from Sam’s Club), the father-son duo has more than 50 years of combined experience in handling ever-changing tax laws on behalf of their accounting clients. The Murthas consult, advise and deal in complicated and intricate tax laws and provide things like business valuations and due diligence while also running the successful Murtha & Murtha Mergers and Acquisitions, LLC. And of course, they do taxes. “We do it all,” says Tom. And, as they help businesses grow and prosper, so has their own business. The Murthas are coming off a year in which they merged with another office in Zephyrhills, which is now called Henson & Murtha, CPAs. Tom says that transition went off seamlessly and is helping the Murthas spread their influence across east Pasco, an area they feel is underserved. “(The merger) was very, very successful,” Tom says. “We (inherited) some great people and haven’t lost any

Currently in the middle of tax season, Murtha & Murtha is expecting to do more than 2,000 tax returns between the two offices. In its Wesley Chapel location alone, where the Murthas and senior accountant Kyle Flischel, CPA, are particularly busy, business is up 70 percent. Tom calls it “explosive.” Patrick draws a laugh from his father when he says this tax season has already been like “trying to drink water from a fire hose.” During a recent two-day span, Patrick says he had meetings with 20 new, potential clients. That speaks to the success of the firm. The staff has grown and stayed ahead of the growth, allowing Murtha & Murtha, LLC to provide business services that are never interrupted by seasonal changes or having too much on their plates.

Much of what Murtha & Murtha does is help businesses large and small handle their accounting. advise businesses on more important matters that can improve their bottom line. “Today, with QuickBooks and other accounting software, that stuff is already done,” Tom says. “That doesn’t do anything for the client; it’s all after the fact. We can actually help clients with what they need. We’re helping them become successful, not just doing this work that shows them where they were last year.” That’s why the Murthas suggest that businesses meet with them during the year, to make decisions before tax time, when it may be too late to help maximize a return or save money for that year.

Services Your Business Needs Murtha & Murtha offers a “CFO Retainer Package,” which is designed to help businesses and those who are self-employed whose company may need a Chief Financial Officer but don’t have the budget to hire a full-time manager or accountant for that job. For a fraction of the cost of a fulltime CFO, the Murthas operate in an advisory position and can handle everything from accounting and bookkeeping to setting up payroll and ensuring that all of a client’s income and expenses are classified correctly. They also will put together a budget, which Patrick says hardly any other companies do. The Murthas are big on budgeting, which helps their clients make

decisions in real time, instead of waiting until the end of the year. And of course, they will take care of all of the tax preparation and planning. Patrick says it is the personal touch that differentiates Murtha & Murtha from others. While some CPAs may take a pass on your more complicated business problems, the Murthas specialize in taking them on — and solving them. At Murtha & Murtha, the person you talk to is the person who does your tax return. Whether you’re a filer from a lower income tax bracket, a business bringing in $100,000 a year or someone with an $80-million stock portfolio, you get personalized treatment. “We want our clients to view us as advisers,” says Patrick, “not just the guys who do their tax returns.” And if the help you require is outside of their parameters, they will help you find the right person, whether it’s a lawyer or a certified financial planner (CFP). “Helping the client is our brand,” Tom says. “We help people be successful. That’s what our firm does.” Murtha & Murtha, LLC, is located at 2236 Ashley Oaks Cir., Suite 101, Wesley Chapel. Palms Pharmacy Is An Independent With A Prescription For Growth By JOHN C. COTEY john@ntneighborhoodnews.com There is a chain pharmacy right across the street, and two other Publix pharmacies located right down the road on each side of her. And yet, Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Shahida Choudhry says her Palms Pharmacy is thriving at its location in The Shoppes at The Pointe plaza in Tampa Palms. Dr. Choudhry may not have the national and regional backing of her nearest competitors, but she has something she says is just as valuable — a hard-working and committed staff that is growing and genuinely cares about providing the exceptional neighborhood touch that comes with being a locally owned and community-focused business. “And don’t forget, woman-owned,” says Choudhry, who opened the pharmacy in 2016 between the popular Ciccio Cali and Koizi Endless Hibachi & Sushi eateries in the plaza. She says a strong relationship with local physicians, as well as word of mouth and advertising in the Neighborhood News, have helped Palms Pharmacy grow from what was once just Choudhry and Naivis Valdez — who Choudhry says “runs the show” — to a staff that has grown to

six people, including a second full-time pharmacist, two pharmacy students and a pharmacy clerk. Despite Palm Pharmacy’s now-larger staff, Dr. Choudhry still promises the personalized service and familiarity that is hard to find in a typical chain drug store. She and her staff get to know all of their customers. Not only do they learn their names — so they can greet them personally and start getting their prescrip-

tions ready as they’re walking in the door — they also learn about their patients’ medications so the staff can provide the best possible care for them. “Lots of folks like the 1-on-1 service we give them,” Dr. Choudhry says proudly. “When they pull up, we have their stuff ready. I know you’ve heard that before, but it’s true.” The pharmacy will celebrate its fourth anniversary on April 15. It already has expanded once, in 2018,

when it literally moved one door over to a larger location, allowing more room for pharmacists and technicians to work, a separate room for prescription compounding, and another separate room where durable medical equipment (such as walkers, crutches and nebulizers) is sold and fittings for compression garments are done. Even so, Palms Pharmacy has almost already outgrown its newfound space. Dr. Choudhry received her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy, then went on to receive her Pharm.D. degree, both from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY, in 2001. Before opening Palms Pharmacy, Dr. Choudhry was the pharmacist at the Publix in Tampa Palms for 10 years. She loved her job and her customers, but a search for a better balance of her work life and home, where she has two small children, led her to starting her own business. So, she says, she took classes and read books and asked questions of many people who served as mentors to her, eventually opening Palms Pharmacy and hiring Naivis to work alongside her. “It’s a hustle,” she says about owning her own business. She must be doing something right, though – she has been asked to speak in June about owning a pharmacy at a Women in Pharmacy conference in Austin, TX.

What’s Palms Pharmacy’s secret sauce? “We do exactly the same as every other pharmacy,” she says, showing off her ever-present wide smile. “But, we do it better.” And, Dr. Choudhry says, just because Palms Pharmacy is a small business doesn’t mean its prices are any higher than the chains. “We are competitive and in many cases cheaper,” she says. Palms Pharmacy boasts a wait time that is usually “next to nothing,” along with compounding medications and selling durable medical equipment not available at typical big chain pharmacies. She and her staff also provide immunizations such as flu shots, vaccines for pneumonia and shingles, and travel vaccines. Dr. Choudhry says she had Shingrix, a shingles vaccine, when no one else around had it. “We try to stay ahead of the market,” she says. The entire staff also thrives on helping patients with especially complicated health or insurance issues, which are becoming more and more common these days. Dr. Choudhry says that when insurance companies decline to cover a patient’s medications, that’s when she picks up the phone. “I know the doctors and the medical assistants,” she says. “I work with them to get their patients what they need, usually within the day.” This is in huge contrast to other pharmacies, which may take 7-10 days to come up with a solution when an insurance company won’t cover a medication. In fact, Dr. Choudhry says many of her patients find Palms Pharmacy through their doctors. “Doctors are supportive of us because we take care of their patients,” she says. And, it’s not always about the sale. Dr. Choudhry is always suggesting helpful lifestyle changes, such as exercise and diet recommendations, to help customers avoid bigger health problems down the road, as opposed to just handing over your medication and rushing you out the door.

Always Evolving

Dr. Choudhry is embracing new technologies when it comes to providing convenient customer service, as environmentally-friendly QR codes are now included with every prescription. Patients can now point their cell phone cameras at the QR codes on their prescriptions and be taken to a website that will play a video offering the same description of the medication, and its possible side effects, that come on the folded up paper with the small print that has always previously come with your prescription. The website also contains other information, as well as a form to fill out and any questions will go directly to Dr. Choudhry’s email. “We started it in JanuNeighborhood News

ary, and have had a really good reception to it,” she says. “I think it’s really cool, and a lot of folks lose their stuff, so it’s really convenient, too.”

More Than Prescriptions

Choudhry also says she tries to hit the trade shows to make sure that Palms Pharmacy’s shelves are always stocked with the latest and best products. She has recently begun carrying three different brands of CBD products — Procana, Medterra and Ananda — at various price points (you can get two tablets for $4 if you’re only looking to try it out), in various forms and in a variety of dosages. And, Dr. Choudhry and her staff will work with you to help you find the right product and dosage that will work best for you. Over the past year, Palms Pharmacy has added products like handmade soaps from the highly-rated Old Whaling Company, as well as carrying aluminum-free natural deodorant from American Provenance, beeswax and honey soaps from Joan’s A Keeper and organic cleaners from Rena Naturals. “I like to carry stuff no one else is carrying,” Dr. Choudhry says. Palms Pharmacy also sells natural vitamins and supplements, from top companies such as Pure, Nordic, Metagenics and Mason. The store also sells LovePop popup greeting cards and all-natural products in the Zum line, such as all-natural soaps, lip products, body lotions and more. What’s the next hot product? “I’ll let you know in two weeks,” Dr. Choudhry says, as she is off to another trade show. “Always hustling,” she says, adding that opening her own pharmacy has been extremely rewarding. “I love it,” she says. “We’re growing every day and it’s a blessing. I wake up every morning and I’m excited to get to work every day.” Palms Pharmacy is located at 17008 Palm Pointe Dr. and is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, call (813) 2529063, see the ad on pg. 28 or visit ThePalmsPharmacy.com.

Wharton Career Fair Opens Students’ Eyes To More Options Leaving An Impression...

By MIKE CAMUNAS A different kind of fair made its way to Wharton High earlier this month. Although there were no rides or fried foods, the school’s gymnasium hosted the first Wharton Technical School & Career Fair on Feb. 11. Advertised as the first of its kind, the fair provided more than 250 students a chance to meet with various companies, businesses, technical and vocational schools and even recruiters from various branches of the military. The message? There is a wide range of opportunities that don’t require a traditional college education. “A lot of times, when I have kids sitting in front of me, they’re saying they don’t what they’re going to do after they graduate,” said Wharton’s Success Coach Roslyn Brown, who organized the event. “They guess they’ll go get a minimum-wage job.” However, Brown says that doesn’t have to be the case. That’s why she came up with the idea for the Technical School & Career Fair. “I try to tell them there are a lot of things they can do that don’t require a four-year (college) degree that

Say you don’t want to go to college, then you can just fall back on this or have a way to make money, so you’re not just walking around with empty pockets in a couple of years.” For fellow senior Jarell Miranda, the career fair was enlightening and productive. “Personally, I was going to go to a trade school, not a four-year college, so I got to speak to Erwin Tech and saw more things that I would really like to do,” Miranda said. “It was awesome that the school did this for us.” Brown said part of putting the fair together was pinpointing who would benefit most from attending and then preparing them to impress potential employers. Three different sessions were held to determine the best students to attend the fair. The first session gauged the inter-

WHARTON

FREEDOM COACH: Tripp Merrell LAST SEASON: 6-15 (1-5 in Class 8A-4) KEY RETURNERS: Brylan West (Sr., P/INF), Kevin Kirby (Sr., P/1B), Jackson Seidl (Jr., OF), Sebastian Pinot (Sr., P/OF), May Colls (Sr., C) PROMISING NEWCOMERS: Gabe Pollard (Jr., INF), Reese Linne (Sr., UTL) BREAKOUT STAR: Freshman infielder Gio Mendoza looks to get a lot of playing time early on a team full of young players that could put up a break-out season. However, Merrell said Mendoza was “a really present surprise to have on campus at tryouts” and is banking on the youngster to make an immediate impact. OUTLOOK: In the newly formed Class 5A, District 6, the Patriots and Chamberlain are the only two Hillsborough County teams facing off against four Pasco County teams. That prospect is being welcomed by Merrell and company, though his young core of players is just looking to get the action started. “There are a lot of young guys who are going to get a lot of playing this time year,” Merrell said. “It’s going to be an exciting time, and I think there is a lot of potential for anyone to have a breakout year.” It’s true that Freedom does boast a talented, young core, as it exchanged last season’s 13 seniors for 13 freshman. Merrell admits that the Patriots will rely heavily on their five returning seniors. “They’ll be all over the mound and field for us,” he added. “They’ll be doing everything for us, but it is exciting to come out to practice and see (the freshmen) get better every day.”

Freedom senior Brylan West looks to be the Patriots’ ace, but also is dangerous at the plate, after batting .317 in 2019. Photo by Mike Camunas.

The Patriots batted only .209 as a team last season, and will need a big improvement at the plate in order to contend this year. Keep an eye on West (above), a stand-out pitcher and infielder who batted .317 last season. West hit a home run in the Pats’ 8-1 season-opening loss to Riverview. MERRELL SAYS: “I’m super excited about (what this new core of players can do in the next couple of years). These guys that are seniors — they’ve put in work and this is it for them, so they deserve whatever they get out of it because they’ve been working hard. It’s going to be a mix of young and old and it’s exciting to be here and watch it.”

COACH: Scott Hoffman LAST SEASON: 19-5 (5-1 in Class 8A-4) KEY RETURNERS: Zach Ehrhard (Jr., SS), Grady Maguire (Sr., INF), Carson Caso (Sr., LHP), Frank Micallef (Jr., C/RHP), Steven Hotinski (Sr., 3B), Ryan Fry (So., RHP) PROMISING NEWCOMERS: Henry Griffith (So., UTL) BREAKOUT STAR: Hoffman and company expect Fry, just a sophomore, to have a breakout season on the mound, in the hopes of becoming a potent arm. “If he throws like we know he can,” Hoffman says, “he can do it. We’re all hoping he can get it going this year.” OUTLOOK: The Wildcats enter the newly formed Class 7A-2 with familiar foes such as Sickles, Steinbrenner and Plant, and are looking to move past their disappointing finish in 2019 when, as top seeds, they were punched out in the first round of the District tournament. Hoffman, entering his 18th season at the helm of the Wildcats (and still boasting Hall of Famer Wade Boggs as an assistant), likened it to another local letdown. “We don’t want to be the Tampa Bay Lightning of high school baseball like we were last year,” he says. “It stung a lot for a bit and took a while to get over, but I think it motivated us.” That being said, Wharton was a young team last season and now returns 11 juniors and three seniors, all poised and ready to erase 2019’s bad memories. “These guys,” Hoffman said, “they grew up around (Wharton) games, probably since they were 9-10 years old, so they want to come here to play and win together at Wharton.”

The ‘Cats should have a potent offense again, led by Hotinski, Ehrhard and Maguire, who combined for 60 RBI, while Ehrhard (above) led the team with a sparkling .434 average and ended the season with an eight-game hitting streak. Caso, who struck out 10 in five innings in a season-opening win over Brandon, will head up the Wharton pitching staff. HOFFMAN SAYS: “I say it all the time and I can’t say it enough about these guys: these kids, I love them to death. This is probably the closest I’ve ever been with a group of players. They’re a great group.”

COACH: Autum Hernandez LAST SEASON: 15-5 (4-2 in Class 8A-4) KEY RETURNERS: Chloe Potts (Sr., OF), Hailey Martin (Sr., 3B/ OF), Ellis Erickson (Sr., C/ UTIL), Kylie Coffin (Sr., P), Lilly Kiester (Jr., OF), Lauren Batcho (Sr., 2B/3B). PROMISING NEWCOMERS: Shaniyah Pope (Sr., P/SS). BREAKOUT STAR: Kiester is the Patriots’ leadoff hitter and will set the table for the lineup this season. She batted .368 last year and is a defensive whiz. “If Lilly has a good year, we’ll all have a good year,” says Hernandez. OUTLOOK: Due to a smaller school enrollment, Freedom is dropping down from Class 7A to 5A this season, and the players better fill up their gas tanks — the new four-county district is comprised of Lake Minneola (90 minutes away), Auburndale (60 minutes), Lake Gibson (45 minutes) and Pasco (35 minutes). However the Patriots will embark on those journeys with what is expected to be their best team since the 2013 squad lost in the Class 7A State Championship game. Coffin could be the key in the pitcher-dominated sport. She was 11-1 last season in the circle, allowing only 39 hits in 76.2 innings and posting a scant 0.46 ERA. She also batted .400 with a team-high four homers. Coffin will be throwing to Erickson, who led the team with a .429 average last year and a slew of other categories. Coffin is a University of Tennessee-Chattanooga signee, and Erickson is headed to Northern Illinois. Pope, an East Florida State Junior

PROMISING NEWCOMERS: Isabelle Rittle (Fr./OH). BREAKOUT STAR: Velasquez hit .255 last season, but in the District and Regional playoffs showed bright signs for 2020. OUTLOOK: Wharton’s newly configured Class 7A, District 3 includes all different opponents, including 2019 playoff teams in Steinbrenner and Palm Harbor University. But, the Wildcats should still contend for a fifth straight Regional playoff berth. A Stark Reminder About The Threat of Human Trafficking By LIBBY BALDWIN It seemed fitting that a classic Florida sunset — vibrant slashes of pink, purple and orange — marked the beginning of Light Up The Night, an annual event created to raise education and awareness about human trafficking, The free event, held right around sunset on Feb. 1 on the upper level parking garage at The Shops at Wiregrass by the Pasco County-based Human Trafficking Foundation (HTF), featured musical performances, local vendors, refreshments, activities for children and teenagers, and the Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse on horseback. Also appearing were survivors of human trafficking, including Edie Rhea, who told those in attendance that she was sexually abused and trafficked from age 8-17 by her mother’s boyfriend, after he convinced her mother to move to Tampa from their hometown of Baltimore, MD. “Moving us was very smart on his part, because it got us completely away from all our friends and family,” said Rhea, 51, who now lives in North Tampa and serves as Executive Director of Healing Root Ministry, a faith-based nonprofit that assists female trafficking victims over the age of 18 with housing, life skills training and obtaining GEDs. Rhea, who at age 12 was impregnated and then forced into having an abortion by a man who had purchased her, found herself on the street at 17 with no education or basic skills after her mother had kicked out her and her trafficker. She met up with a man named David, who used to buy drugs from Rhea’s mother, and the two began a relationship. Today, 34 years later, they are happily married with five children, three adults and two under the age of ten they recently adopted. “When we were first married, I had lots of affairs, because I really believed that every time a man spoke to me, I had to have sex with him,” said Rhea. A few years ago, Rhea met up with her former traf-

Cpl. Alan Wilkett, HTF chairman and commander of the Pasco County Human Trafficking Task Force, with human trafficking victim Edie Rhea. ficker. They prayed together and she said she forgave him. Weeks later, he passed away, and the experience inspired Rhea to form Healing Root Ministry, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, faith-based organization that provides shelter for those who were once enslaved, as well as “hope, help and healing,” according to its mission statement.

Helping Those Who Help Victims

Several organizations, including Healing Root, received beneficiary funds from HTF at the event. “The whole idea of Light Up The Night was simply that this is such a dark crime,” said Cpl. Alan Wilkett, HTF chairman and commander of the Pasco County Human Trafficking Task Force. “This criminal activity is probably the darkest crime that I’ve ever investigated,” said Wilkett, 58,

who has been in law enforcement for 27 years, “and I’ve had the opportunity to investigate just about everything you can imagine.” Wilkett described human trafficking as a “relatively young crime,” pointing out that there was no official charge against it for victims like Rhea until the year 2000, when Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. “Some of the cases we’ve seen over the years, and especially having children myself, have been very impactful on me,” Cpl. Wilkett said. “It’s a broad, encompassing crime that directly affects the fabric of who we are.” Indeed, said both Wilkett and Rhea, human trafficking is a much more widespread issue today then ever before. According to HTF, it is the second-largest criminal enterprise in the world, behind drug trafficking, with an estimated 40.3 million current victims worldwide. Between 15,000-18,000 are trafficked annually into the U.S. alone, and Florida currently ranks third in the nation for calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The Tampa Bay area, says the foundation, is usually in the top three cities in the state for trafficking. In 2017, Pasco County became the first “TraffickingFree Zone” in the country. This distinction, given by the U.S. Institute Against Human Trafficking, intends to send a message to traffickers that they are being watched, thereby reducing the demand for their victims. “A lot of people believe that this only happens overseas, but it’s also happening here, now, in our own backyard,” said Rhea, who spends 65 hours every week running Healing Root pro-bono. Even as the temperature dropped into the low 50s with chilly winds at the event at the Shops, attendees talked See “Light Up The Night” on page 42.

WC Readers Pick Bahama Breeze Twice! Here in New Tampa, it was all

about Tampa Palms in our annual Reader Dining Survey (as we reported last issue).. The tightly-knit community, and even those outside it on the north side of I-75, put their votes where their appetites were in picking three Tampa Palms-located favorites as winners — Fat Rabbit (Best Bar), Stonewood Grill (Best Restaurant) and Cappy’s Pizzeria (Best Pizza). Ciccio Cali, another Tampa Palms restaurant, received plenty of votes in every one of those categories. In Wesley Chapel, however, there are no communities quite like Tampa Palms, where so many restaurants are located inside New Tampa’s largest community. Instead, our readers’ favorite Wesley Chapel bars and eateries reside on busy state roads like S.R. 54 and S.R. 56 in or near the local shopping malls. So, when the results were tallied for Wesley Chapel, it was no surprise that Bahama Breeze (S.R. 56) was chosen as the area’s favorite restaurant and bar of the record number of 1,500+ ballots cast this year. While our format did not lend itself to every category of food, we were able to cull the unofficial favorites from the votes cast. Among those winners were Yamato Japanese Steakhouse for your favorite Asian restaurant in Wesley Chapel, followed by Bonsai Sushi, Umu Japanese & Thai, Asian Buffet and Arroy Thai. The Latin restaurant that received the most Favorite Restaurant votes in Wesley Chapel was Chuy’s Tex-Mex, followed by Capital Tacos, Los Vallartas, Rice & Beans and Cantina Laredo. Rice & Beans also received more “Favorite Restaurant in Wesley Chapel” votes than

any other newcomer, beating out WalkOn’s Bistreaux & Bar and Blaze Pizza. The top “Favorite Restaurant in Wesley Chapel” vote-getters for Italian restaurants/pizzerias were Noble Crust, followed by 900 Woodfired Pizza, Amici Pizza & Deli, Mellow Mushroom and Little Italy’s. The only really big top-20 surprises this year in Wesley Chapel (at least in my opinion) were First Watch at #4 and Chick-fil-A at #6.

ahama Breeze Island Grille has only been located on the north side of S.R. 56 for two years or so, but the popular chain continues to attract large numbers of visitors — and votes in our annual Reader Dining Survey — each year it has been open. New general manager Melissa Altamare recently took over for the beloved former GM Jeannie Lafever, but Melissa is a long-time Bahama Breeze employee who helped Jeannie open what we call the Wesley Chapel location. Melissa is equally as friendly as Jeannie and the bottom line is that a lot of people love the whole tropical feel and menu of Bahama Breeze — even though some locals complain that the restaurant seems somewhat out of place here because it’s not located on a body of water. Jannah and I have always been fond of Bahama Breeze’s blackened or almond-crusted fresh catch, as well as the burgers and the ahi tuna salad, and I’m a fan of the churrasco steak pictured top

rillsmith has always been among Wesley Chapel’s most popular eateries since it first opened in the Shops at Wiregrass, but a recent menu upgrade to include a truly fresh catch every day has kept it close to the top on my list as well. Try the mashed cauliflower, too!

oble Crust has stayed near the top of the favorites list for both yours truly and our readers in WC, not only for its unique “Southern Italian” cuisine, but also the great vibe at the bar. I do still wish there were more choices like the gnocchi appetizer, Chicken Fried Chicken Parm and double pork chop entrées.

Melissa says her favorite dishes are the habañero wings, the jerk chicken pasta and the “tequila sunburn” glazed salmon (bottom left). “But I keep finding new favorites,” she says. “I really do love our food.” And, considering that Bahama Breeze took first place for not only Favorite Restaurant but also Favorite Bar in WC (see next page) with our readers by comfortable margins this year, Melissa and her outstanding staff should continue to have big crowds to contend with at arguably our area’s most spacious freestanding restaurant. — GN

...AND BEST BAR T here’s no doubt that Bahama Breeze Island Grille is popular, but considering the selection of bars and restaurants now located in Wesley Chapel, it was a bit of a surprise to see the popular Darden Restaurants brand take home both our readers’ Favorite Bar in WC and Favorite Restaurant. It probably shouldn’t be so surprising, however, considering that the Bahama Breeze bar has more seats — inside and out — than any other in or near Wesley Chapel. In addition, it’s one of our area’s few live music venues and, Melissa says, “with so many other restaurants and businesses having opened around us, there’s a lot more nearby parking than there was when this location opened.” And of course, for those seeking sweet tropical specialty

drinks, few local hangouts offer the variety that Bahama Breeze does, from a full line of mojitos to cocktail flights to the famous Bahamarita, or half-priced appetizers during Happy Hour and other bar specials. And, Melissa says, all Bahama Breeze locations will again be celebrating National Margarita Day with $2.22 margaritas all day. Might I suggest a ride-share service to go that day? Bahama Breeze is located at 25830 Sierra Center Blvd., Lutz. For more information, call (813) 949-0779, visit BahamaBreeze. com or see the ad on pg. 39 of this issue. — GN

he Basement has long been one of Wesley Chapel’s best-kept secrets, especially since it’s technically located in Lutz. But, its great beer and hard seltzer/wine-based cocktail selection, karaoke and DJ dance music and occasional comedy nights always bring out a lively, fun crowd — and the drink prices are great.

oble Crust truly offers one of the great bar scenes in Wesley Chapel, with ultra-premium liquor but still fair prices and usually enough seats to accommodate those who don’t want to sit at a table. Noble Crust was the only place this year other than Bahama Breeze to make the top-5 as both a restaurant & bar.

rass Tap, for my money, is truly Wesley Chapel’s premier bar hangout and has only grown in popularity since the nearby Primebar closed in the Shops at Wiregrass. With the cheapest premium full-liquor bar prices at the mall and karaoke, live music and trivia, the Brass Tap is hard to beat.

B

J’s Brewhouse would finish higher on my own list of Wesley Chapel favorites if it just had a few additional seats at its always-packed bar. BJ’s has one of the more-rounded food menus in Wesley Chapel, and reasonable enough prices, it just could use a more bar-friendly configuration, in one editor’s opinion.

BEST PIZZA wesley chapel

S

teve Falabella says he doesn’t have one secret to his success as the owner of 900 Woodfired Pizza — he has many. It starts with the pizza, sure. The New York-style pizza, his best seller, boasts a crispy crust — a little bit of whole milk when making the dough gives it some extra life — sauce derived from six different tomatoes and Grande cheese, which he says is the best around. “It’s all about the cheese,” Falabella says, and he doesn’t mix any other into his choice of mozzarella to cut any corners. But it’s also all about the employees. If you wonder why the food — whether one of 20 different kinds of pizza, specialty pastas like the Tortellini della Casa or a big plate of spaghetti or Pesto Genovese — is always delicious, it’s because it’s probably made by the same people that made it last time. Head chef Adrian Luna has

been with Falabella all eight years he has been at the Shops of Wiregrass, as have those providing top-notch service — Cynthia, Bryan and Ivan. “Consistency is crucial, it’s what we do,” Falabella says. “You know you are going to get the best quality ingredients cooked in the best quality way, and if you don’t, we will fix it for you in a second.” For more information about 900 Woodfired Pizza (28152 Paseo Dr.), call (813) 527-6940 or visit 900degreeswoodfirepizza.com. Stay tuned for more info about Steve’s Falabella Family Kitchen, coming this summer to The Village area in The Grove. — JCC

mici Pizza & Deli dropped to 2nd place in this year’s Reader Survey after winning the Favorite Pizza in WC” title last year and there’s no doubt that the pizza is true New York style and the linguini with white clam sauce is the best (and most authentic) in our area. The new location has been a blessing.

ellow Mushroom definitely has the funkiest decor of all the pizza joints on this list, and it pairs an eclectic environment with equally eclectic offerings like the Funky Q Chicken (BBQ), Holy Shittake (for the mushroom lover), Great White and Kosmic Karma, with a handful of gluten-free pies as well.

izzaMania has never been much lower than the top three or four favorite pizza places with our readers since the day it opened in the Shoppes at New Tampa plaza. PizzaMania offers authentic New York/New Jerseystyle pizza and excellent veal and chicken parmigiana & other Italian specialties.

Y NY Pizza lives up to its name, serving up some pretty tasty NY-style pizza lauded for its sauce-to-cheese balance. One of the most popular items is the thincrust Grandma Pie, with basil, garlic and plum tomatoes. With more than 25 kinds of pizza, as well as wings and sandwiches, NY NY has something for everyone.

othing Bundt Cakes arrived in Wesley Chapel quietly in March of 2017. It was that day that its unique offering of tiny, moist bundt cakes with mouthwatering cream cheese icing nearly stole the show at the Taste of New Tampa. Competing against more than 35 restaurants, Nothing Bundt Cakes finished third overall in attendee voting. The next year, Nothing Bundt Cakes opened at the Shops of Wiregrass, and now, the shop is your choice for best dessert in Wesley Chapel. “That is great,” says Tammy Mencia, who owns the Wesley Chapel and Carrollwood locations of the dessert franchise with her husband Ralph. “We have had a great reception from the community since we opened.”

The burgers and cheese curds are divine, but a shake, pint of frozen custard and the Concrete Mixers are worth the stop all by themselves. airy Queen doesn’t do anything special with its desserts, and maybe that’s the charm for locals — you know what you’re getting. The ice cream is good, the Blizzards are way better than McFlurries, and ice cream sundae, parfaits are easy choices and delicious ice cream cakes are always a treat.

Nibbles & Business The Latest & Greatest News In Dining, Shopping & Business In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel!

More Italian, Honest!

Oronzo Honest Italian is expected to open in late-April in the old Men’s Wearhouse store (above) in the Walk at Highwoods Preserve on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. Dan Bavaro, who founded Bavaro’s Pizza Napoletana & Pastaria in downtown Tampa in 2009, is teaming up with the Front Burner Brands restaurant group on the fast-casual Italian concept. “Oronzo is named after my grandfather, Oronzo Bavaro, who migrated from Giovinazzo, Italy, to Gravesend, Brooklyn, New York, in the early 1900s,” said Bavaro in a press release. “My grandfather estab-

lished Oronzo & Sons General Trucking Company, which made deliveries to area grocery stores and restaurants.” Front Burner Brands owns The Melting Pot and Burger 21 franchises. Its CEO, Bob Johnston, said in the release that when he first met Bavaro, “We knew there was something special about him.” The menu at Oronzo’s will focus on from-scratch recipes, many featuring Piadana, a thin Italian flatbread whose dough is made by mixing imported Italian flour, water and lard or olive oil and then grilled and sandwiched around a number of different fillings. The menu will also have chicken,

steak, hand-rolled meatballs, Forza bowls and homemade pasta, as well as vegan options like zucchini noodles. — JCC

Lima Opens In El Pescador’s Place!

Quick, which cuisine is widely regarded as the finest of Latin America? No, it’s not Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican or Colombian. If you want to find out the answer, head to the new Lima Restaurant, which is located in the former El Pescador location in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza, near the Mobil gas station. Lima, owned by Oscar Escudero and his family, is named, of course, for the capital of Peru and

yes, Peruvian food is world-famous for unique flavors like the best rotisserie chicken and the most incredible fish and seafood ceviche. At Lima, which opened the day we went to press, both dishes (left and above, respectively) live up to their lofty reputations. The chicken has a crispy coating and even though the chicken itself is extremely well done, it’s still juicy inside, and is served with two different, moderately spicy dipping sauces. Since I can’t eat the seafood ceviche, I got the mahimahi ceviche marinated in a trio of different sauces, with those incredible giant Aztec corn kernels (think corn nuts, only better). If you order either of these dishes and hate them, tell Oscar to call me and I’ll come get ‘em! For more info, stop in or call Lima (19062 BBD) at (813) 304-0205. — GN

green grocer, announced earlier this month that the company will be closing all of its stores, including the Cypress Creek Town Center location on the north side of S.R. 56 in Lutz/Wesley Chapel. In a press release from early Feb., the North Carolina-based chain of green grocers announced it was liquidating all of its stores nationwide, and that liquidation sale began immediately. Even store fixtures could be had, the release noted. “Earth Fare has been proud to serve the natural & organic grocery market, and the decision to begin the process of closing our stores was not entered into lightly,” the company said in the press release. “We’d like to thank our Team Members for their commitment and dedication to serving our customers.” The Wesley Chapel location did barely

make it to its first anniversary, as there were more than 100 shoppers lined up on Feb. 19, 2019, eager to be the store’s first customers. “A gut punch,” says Hope Kennedy (formerly Allen), the CEO of the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. Neighborhood News editor Gary Nager and his wife Jannah did just happen to meet a couple of regional managers for Whole Foods (the favorite green grocer of many local residents) at the N. Dale Mabry location, who said that the company, “is looking at all of the closing Earth Fare and Lucky’s Market stores,” although they also noted that the closing stores “are generally smaller than what we need for a Whole Foods.” Our local Earth Fare was almost completely empty by our press time on Feb. 21, with signs saying “Last 5 Days!” —JCC

Aldi, Aussie Grill, Bonefish & Carrabba’s (& More), Oh My!

Despite Earth Fare’s closing, there’s still plenty of action happening these days on both the north and south side of S.R. 56 just west of I-75, but nothing is more anticipated than the Aldi grocery store taking shape in front of Costco. Although no grand opening date has been announced, the signs are up on the outside of the building that looks to be just a few weeks away from opening. Right across S.R. 56, a number of eateries are going vertical in the Cypress Creek Town Center, including three Bloomin’ Brands restaurants — Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill and Aussie Grill by Outback (photo, left). The local Aussie Grill will be the first-ever freestanding location for the fast-

casual eatery that currently only has kiosks at the International Plaza and the Brandon Town Center. After our Neighborhood News Online video came out about the progress on these restaurants three weeks ago, a comment on our Facebook page said that the Bonefish on BBD south of S.R. 56 would close when the new Bonefish opens, but we could not confirm that at our press time. — GN • In other news from this area of 56, according to permitting filed with Pasco County, Zukku Sushi is also opening in the Cypress Creek Town Center. Zukku means “canvas” or “cloth” in Japanese and, according to the restaurant’s website, the rice is your canvas. With its first location inside the trendy Armature Works in South Tampa, Zukku specializes in sushi bowls and sushi. — JCC

“Light Up The Night” Continued from page 31

with vendors, pledged donations, and enjoyed hot cocoa, popcorn and cotton candy to the backdrop of performances from the Northwest Community Church band and Vessels 360, a Christian-based dance team from Hernando High. Vessels 360 performed a moving interpretation of human trafficking, prompting tears from many in the audience, before Cpl. Wilkett handed out checks ranging from $2,000-$5,000 to various organizations who help trafficking victims. The evening came to a close with a candlelight vigil (photo on previous page)

led by Cpl. Wilkett, honoring survivors and offering prayers for current victims. Those without their own battery-operated votive candles thrust their phones in the air, having downloaded candle apps for the occasion. “”The strongest thing you can do against hate is bring love,” said Cpl. Wilkett as attendees circled the stage. “And the strongest thing you can do against darkness is bring in the light.” For more information about Light Up The Night or to donate or volunteer, go to HTFoundation.us. For info about Healing Root Ministry, go to HealingMinistry.com. If you suspect human trafficking or are or have been a victim yourself, please call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at (888) 373-7888.
