WC Chamber Moving Forward Without Executive Director By Michael Smith With the recent departure of David West, the position of executive director of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) is now vacant, and it looks like it will stay that way, at least for the time being. However, the group still plans to move forward in 2011, with a full slate of activities planned for the coming months, including a possible move to new quarters. That’s according to WCCC president Laura Miller, who is handling many of the Chamber’s executive duties since West, who served as executive director for a little less than a year, resigned the position in January to launch a new local church. “We’re not actively looking for a new director at this point,” Miller says, adding that West’s departure will allow the Chamber’s Board of Directors to “look at doing different things,” although she declined to elaborate on what those things might be.
Miller did confirm, though, that the Chamber is currently in negotiations to possibly move from its present headquarters in the S.R. 54 ProfesDavid West sional Park to new digs in The Grove shopping plaza off S.R. 54 and Oakley Blvd., west of I-75. That could happen by March or April, Miller said, and it would make it more convenient for the Chamber to stage some of its signature activities, such as its annual Christmas Festival and Business Expo & WingFest, both of which already are held at The Grove. The plaza also will be the site of the Chamber’s 2011 Health Fair, which will take place on May 22, but the group’s other big annual event, the Fine Arts Show, which will be held April 9-10, will still take place at the Shops at Wiregrass mall. Miller said that she and the other
Board members truly appreciate West’s efforts on behalf of the Chamber, helping it to grow to more than 500 members during his tenure, but they also understand and support his desire to follow his calling as a minister. Prior to coming on board at the Chamber, West served as pastor of the Dade City Church of Christ for 15 years and he said that with the increase in population that Wesley Chapel has seen over the past several years, he felt the time was right for the community to have its own Church of Christ, too. So, his new congregation, formally known as the Church of Christ at Wesley Chapel, began holding services at the Lil’ Campers Academy (30126 S.R. 54, in the Freedom Plaza) on January 23, with 43 members in attendance. Meanwhile, Miller says that the Chamber is looking forward to a great year in 2011. Despite the poor economy, the Wesley Chapel area continues to enjoy plenty of growth, especially in the commercial sector, much of it centered in and around the Wiregrass
Ranch development. That’s where officials with the Adventist Health System recently broke ground on the longawaited Wesley Chapel Medical Center, which will be the area’s first fullservice hospital, and it’s also been proposed as a potential site for a new, huge sports complex that will reportedly feature 30 fields for youth and adult sports and more. Miller says that Wiregrass also is one of the sites being looked at by the Raymond James Financial Group as a location for a new satellite office. “If we could get Raymond James and the mega sports complex, I would be delighted,” Miller says. towards her. Schenecker also allegedly left a note in which she indicated that she had planned to kill herself as well, but when police found her the morning after the shootings reportedly took place, she was apparently lying unconscious in the back yard of the family’s home in the gated Ashington Reserve neighborhood of Tampa Palms, wearing a housecoat and slippers that were stained with her children’s blood. Upon her arrest, Schenecker appeared glassy-eyed and was visibly shaking, at least partially due to what police described as an undisclosed preexisting medical condition, and she had to be hospitalized for two days before she was well enough to go before a judge, who ordered her held without bond. According to court documents, it was revealed that Beau Schenecker was

Waves of shock and sadness reverberated through the New Tampa community and far beyond last month, in the wake of the arrest of Julie Powers Schenecker, the Tampa Palms woman who is accused of shooting her two teenage children to death. According to police, who discov-

‘Remember Them For How They Lived’—Col. Parker Schenecker An editorial by Gary Nager Like so many of you, I’m a parent who loves his children, so it’s pretty much impossible for me to believe that any parent could possibly take the life of his or her own child. Even so, once again, the New Tampa community has been rocked by unspeakable tragedy, as Julie Powers Schenecker is now facing murder charges in the shooting deaths of her teenage children, Calyx and Beau. At our press time, it’s been a little more than a week since since Schenecker was found at her home by Tampa Police (TPD) officials, a few hours after she reportedly shot both of her children twice in the head, leaving her son Beau in the garage and daughter Calyx in her room overnight. Schenecker had left a note saying that she also planned to take her own life, but she was still very much alive and covered in her children’s blood when she was arrested. Schenecker’s husband, U.S. Army Col. Parker Schenecker, was in the Middle East when he got the call about the tragedy. A few days after his children were killed, Col. Schenecker spoke publicly about the incident for the first time at a memorial service held at the First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace. Surrounded by a crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people, many of whom had no knowledge of the family before the tragedy, Col. enecker asked for everyone to “remember how they lived.” I have read all of the postings on Facebook since these two beautiful children were murdered, but like Col. Schenecker himself, I can’t focus on a reportedly previously loving mother who obviously had something snap inside her. I don’t believe that anyone can possibly have a good explanation for why or how any parent, whether depressed or on medication, and no matter how “mouthy” her teenagers may have been, could possibly hold a gun to her precious children’s heads and pull the trigger. Therefore, in my opinion, this senseless tragedy is the story of how a community — and even a nation — can once again come together to try to help each other through such horror. It is the story of the King High Cross Country team, of which 16-yearold Calyx was a promising young runner. It’s the story of the players, coaches and fellow parents involved in the Fusion Football Club, for which Beau was a talented player, and even the other soccer programs throughout the county, trying to make sense of it all. It’s about grief counselors at not only King High, but also at Liberty Middle School and at churches throughout the area doing what they can to help other children and their parents deal with the inconceivable. For example, one local resident told me that at St. James United Methodist Church in Tampa Palms, one of the closest churches to the Ashington Reserve subdivision where the Schenecker family still owns their home, as
many as 100 children showed up the evening after the news broke to seek answers and console each other. And unfortunately, it’s about a father’s grief, having to deal with not only losing both of his children in the blink of an eye, but also with his wife admitting to their murders and having to possibly face the death sentence herself for her actions. As I said earlier, it’s only been a little more than a week since Calyx and Beau were taken from their father, their family, their schools, friends and their
community. all of whom must miss them more than words can express. So, while some people still focus on the woman accused of this most heinous of crimes, I feel compelled to offer whatever help I can to Col. Schenecker and to hug my own children, my family, friends and every one of you feeling the same sense of hopelessness and helplessness that I do. Although it can’t change what’s happened, for me, it’s at least a little comforting to know that we’re not alone. Rest in peace, Calyx and Beau.

“News Briefs” Continued from page 1 covered with a blanket. Calyx, meanwhile, was shot and killed as she did homework on a computer in an upstairs bedroom. Police say that the two teens were shot with a .38-caliber handgun their mother purchased five days before the murders took place. Beau was a student at Liberty Middle School in Tampa Palms, while Calyx was in the IB (International Baccalaureate (IB) program at King High, and the schools held a joint memorial service for the teens on February 2 at the First Baptist Church in Temple Terrace that was attended by an estimated 1,000 people, including dozens of their classmates and many people who did not know the family at all, but wanted to show their support for the children and their father, Parker Schenecker, a U.S. Army Colonel assigned to Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base who was on duty in Qatar when he received the phone call about what had happened. Col. Schenecker spoke publicly for the first time following the incident at the memorial service and thanked everyone for their support and love for Beau and Calyx and urged mourners to “remember them for the way they had lived,” rather than the tragic way in which they died.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to: the Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, 550 N Reo St., Suite 301, Tampa, FL 33609 or call 282-1975 for additional information.
Local Game Warden Dies In Fall From Tree Stand
The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) is conducting an investigation into the death of a local wildlife official who died after apparently falling from a tree stand while hunting in Wesley Chapel earlier this month, but the death appears to have been nothing more than a tragic accident. According to PCSO spokesman Kevin Doll, Sean O’Shea Smith, 39, of Wesley Chapel, was hunting with some friends on private property in the Quail Hollow area on the afternoon of February 1. When Sean Smith failed to show O’Shea Smith up at a previously arranged meeting spot that evening, his companions went looking for him, and that’s when they discovered his body, Doll said. Smith, who was married with two children, had served as an officer with
the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission since 2002. Doll said that the PCSO is awaiting the results of an autopsy to find out the exact cause of Smith’s death. He leaves behind his wife, Angel; and two sons, Eathon (6) and Aidan (3). In lieu of flowers, send donations to Sean Smith Family Memorial Fund, C/O Bank of America. Send online condolences to MacDonaldFuneral.com or MacDonald Funeral Home, 10520 N. Florida Ave., Tampa, FL 33612. Or, call 933-4950.
Tampa Police Seeking Female Identity Thief
Detectives with the Tampa Police Department (TPD) are seeking help from the public in identifying a woman who attempted to use stolen identification to get money from a local bank – twice. According to a TPD report, the woman, described as being in her 40s with long, dark hair, attempted to withdraw money from the drivethrough teller window of the Regions Bank branch at 6202 Commerce Palms Blvd. in Tampa Palms on December 28, using the identification and bank information of a Trinity woman who had reported those items stolen earlier that day. TPD says that when the bank teller noticed that the
woman was not the person pictured on the license and refused to process the transaction, the suspect fled the scene. At the time, she was driving a silver colored SUV. Then, on Janu- This image shows ary 26, the same the ID theft suswoman returned to pect at the drivethe same bank through of a local drive-through and Regions Bank. attempted to cash a check, this time using a license that had been stolen from a car in Mobile, AL. Once again, however, the teller noticed that the woman did not match the person on the license and refused to give her any money. They asked her to come into the bank to complete the transaction, but once again she fled the scene, this time driving a white SUV. Investigators later determined that the check she was attempting to cash had been stolen from a vehicle in Hillsborough County on January 20. Investigators believe that the suspect has or will try to commit other fraudulent acts at other banks in the area, and are asking anyone who may have seen her or who has any information about the case to call 231-6130.

New Prescription Discount Program Available To Pasco Residents By Michael Smith As of February 1, Pasco County began offering a new free program that will help residents of the county save money on their prescriptions and other medical needs. The program is called “Points of Care,” and it is a replacement for the county’s old prescription savings program, which was suspended in July of last year as part of the county’s response to its ongoing budget crisis. “At the time, however, the Board of County Commissioners directed
6
staff to find an alternate program, one that would both reduce the cost of residents’ prescriptions and also generate money for the county,” says county purchasing director Scott Stromer. The Points of Care Program does both, Stromer says. While county residents receive as much as 50 percent off of their prescriptions, diabetes supplies, durable medical equipment and hearing aids, the county receives $1.52 for each prescription that is filled under the program. Stromer says that could add up to around $12,000-$15,000 per month,
assuming that county residents fill the same number of prescriptions per month, roughly 9,000-10,000, as they did under the old program at the time it was cancelled. And, as an added bonus, Stromer says the Points of Care program, which is administered by Universal Rx of Roanoke, VA, and offered through the National Association of Counties, is designed to allow other local county administrations to “piggyback” on Pasco’s plan. If they do, that county would receive $1.25 per prescription and Pasco would get a “finder’s fee” of 27 cents for each. Stromer says that all of the money generated through Points of Care is earmarked to go to the public assistance and other programs offered by the county’s Human Services Division, many of which also were affected by budget cuts.
Participation in Points of Care is free, and voluntary, but it is available to all residents of Pasco County, regardless of age, income, or pre-existing conditions. Stromer says it is particularly designed to help those who have no prescription coverage through their health insurance or who have no insurance at all. All major pharmacies, including CVS, Walgreen’s, Wal-Mart, Publix, Target and others, accept the program, and all it takes to participate is a free savings card, which is available at a number of locations around the county, including Community Services offices and public libraries. Cards can also be printed out directly from the program website, PascoRXCard.com. For other information, including a list of card pickup locations and participating pharmacies, call the county’s Customer Service Center at (727) 847-2411.

Artisan Aesthetics Can Give You The Look You Want By Melissa O’Brien Even though lately, it may seem that we all need to tighten our belts and mind our budgets, there are still affordable options within the “luxury” world of plastic and laser surgery that can give you the look you want and maybe even give you a leg up on the competition. In fact, as more people are in job searches these days, some of them are turning to affordable treatments that can make them look years younger. Some say a younger look and attitude will make people more competitive in this challenging job market. “With the downturn in the economy, people may have less disposable income, but this industry has responded,” says Stanley Caster, M.D., the owner of Artisan Aesthetics Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, located in the Tampa Palms Professional Center off of Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms (north of the USAA building). “A lot of companies are offering their products for less money to plastic surgeons and we are able to transfer that savings onto our patients.” Dr. Castor says that many companies, like Allergan, which manufactures the dermal filler Botox, are offer-
12
ing buy-onetreatment, getone-at-a-discount options and many people are foregoing full-fledged surgical facelifts for non-surgical treatments like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and other facial Dr. Stanley Castor fillers that help diminish facial wrinkles and folds. “These procedures freshen up the laugh lines and make people look and feel better,” says Dr. Castor. “I see a lot of patients who, for employment reasons, are trying to compete with a younger crowd. Some want to stay competitive in sales and marketing, and they want to do something to make themselves look younger. Others may have lost their jobs and are just looking to refresh their look.” Dr. Castor says many of his patients also are older women and men who are physically active and very healthy and who want to look as young as they feel. “I have patients who are in their 70s who tell me they feel like they are
50 or younger,” he says. “They are active, and in great physical shape, running around after their grandkids, and there is no reason they shouldn’t look as good as they feel.” He adds that some of these patients are afraid of anesthesia, but the industry trend has been toward less invasive procedures. “People are busier and more active and they don’t want to take time away from work,” says Dr. Castor. “So, there are procedures and treatments we can do, like smaller scar facelifts and new liposuction technology that is less invasive and is done with local anesthesia [instead of general]. This allows you to go back to work or to your retirement activities more quickly, with less down time.” Dr. Castor grew up in Florida and attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland. He then studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta. Dr. Castor then continued his training in Plastic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH, and also completed a prestigious cosmetic
surgery fellowship with the worldrenowned plastic surgeons Dr. Tracy Baker and Dr. James Stuzin in Miami. Dr. Castor is Board-certified in Plastic Surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. He also is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He says that an initial consultation is a key part of his interaction with his patients. “I spend close to an hour with new patients to find out what their goals are and how they are interested in improving their appearance.” He adds, “There is usually more than one way to meet a patient’s goals, so we go over different procedures and options. I explain the risks and benefits of each procedure and then show patients before and after pictures so they can get an idea of the outcome. We explain how long the recovery period will be and then my staff can discuss the financial aspects and financing options that are available.” One of those patients is Chris Chisholm, who lives in Meadow Pointe and was recently featured in a

Studio F.I.T. Offers Affordable Personal Training Options By Melissa O’Brien Sarah Kays is a long-time runner, and she knows the importance of being physically fit. But, the Seven Oaks resident doesn’t rely solely on running to stay in shape. She knows that true fitness requires a total body workout that includes maintaining and improving your core strength to have the best chance of preventing the injuries that often happen while participating in sports. Since it opened, Sarah and her husband Kyle have worked out at Studio F.I.T. (which stands for Function In Training), a 1,600-sq. ft. fitness studio located in the Live Oak Center, just south and east of the corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and County Line Rd. “I see fitness methods changing,” she says. “The trend seems to be moving toward smaller studios like Studio F.I.T. that are not set up with a lot of lifting machines, but rather specialize in cutting-edge equipment that is flexible to use for trainers and those being trained. The equipment is less intimidating for people, but it has a tremendous impact on a workout.” Studio F.I.T. is owned and operated by personal trainer Christine Simmons, who opened the studio with a

partner who has since moved to another state. The studio is a unique personal training and customized group fitness facility that offers group exercise classes with professional instructors for as low as $3.75 a session, as well as affordable one-on-one personal training sessions. “We recently created a line of programs called Express Workouts,” says Simmons. “This is a 30-minute workout for people who are on the go. It is also a great way for people who are just starting out to come and see what programs we offer and to see what Studio F.I.T. is all about. We offer affordable and customized personal training and have a variety of options, including small- and large-group sessions, as well as personal training. Our goal is to keep people motivated and interested through cross-training and to keep getting results.” When she opened the studio, Simmons purchased equipment not found in most fitness businesses in the New Tampa area. The equipment includes three Gravity Training System®, which is a commercial-grade systems made by the same company that makes Total Gym® equipment, where up to three people can train at a time. We specifically structure our programs on a monthly basis to keep our clients motivated.” Simmons, who lives in Tampa Palms, has worked in the fitness industry for many years, and decided to open Studio F.I.T. in 2009. “I came from a corporate environment,” she says. “I was in banking for 27 years, but decided to make a career change based on the fact that I had been working in the fitness industry on a part-time basis,” continues Simmons, who is certified in kickboxing, group fitness, Pilates and other areas. “Christine has a way of motivating me,” says Kays. “And the other trainers at the studio also find out what internally motivates someone to work out. As a runner, I want to keep running and stay healthy and Studio F.I.T. actually makes working out fun for me. The clients enjoy being there. Trainers will ask questions of clients to see if there is a need for adaptation in a routine due to injury. They also take the time to give you stepping stones to get you to the level you want to achieve.” Studio F.I.T. is located at 20739 Center Oak Dr., just off of BBD, next to Insignia Hair Studio (see page 20). The studio is open Monday-Friday at 5 a.m. and sessions are available in one-hour increments until about 10:30. Insignia Hair Studios Can Create A Stylish Look For Any Hair Type By Melissa O’Brien We all have different hair. Mine is thick and straight, while yours may be fine and flyaway. Some people even have been told by a hair stylist that they have “hard-to-manage” hair. Telsi O’Conner, manager of Insignia Hair Salon, wants you to know that the nine professional stylists at the salon can turn any type of hair into a beautiful hair style. “Our focus at Insignia is on all different hair types,” says O’Conner, which is located at Live Oak Center (behind the Walgreen’s pharmacy just south and east of the intersection of County Line Rd. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd., next to Studio F.I.T.; see page 16). “There is no hair type that we can’t address. So, even if someone else tells you that you have problematic hair, we have someone here who can address your needs and who can cater to your type of hair.” One of the nine stylists at Insignia is Kali Moore, who is the newest member of the salon’s team. “I have been working here since November and have already learned new things from my colleagues,” says Moore, who has five years of experience as a hair stylist. “Telsi encourages us to learn from each other and to try new things.
20
I love being a stylist because it is a great way for me to express my creativity, and l love the way a new haircut makes my clients feel. I have had clients cry and hug me because of the dramatic, positive change that I have made to their appearance. It is very rewarding for me.” Insignia caters to both men and women, with barber Tim Sears handling most of the men’s styles. “Tim does a lot of corporate haircuts,” says Telsi. “A lot of men come in by appointment because he is very detail-oriented and makes sure he starts on time to accommodate the time-frame of the client.” O’Conner adds that regular clients also will be happy to know that another of the salon’s popular stylists, Baby Rosencrance, recently had her baby and is now back at work. O’Conner says that one of the main things that appeals to clients of Insignia is the warm, inviting atmosphere of the salon. “We are the hidden gem of New Tampa,” says Telsi. “We are tucked away off of Bruce B. Downs, but people keep coming back because of the positive word-of-mouth about our service. We want our clients to feel at home here. If you were to go into certain high-end salons, you sometimes
don’t get a warm and cozy feeling. Even though we offer high-end service, all of our employees are very warm and friendly people.” The ambiance in the salon is definitely warm and inviting. The soft yellows, browns and earth tones on the walls are very welcoming and the rich granite countertops and soothing saltwater fish tank add to the elegance. Every customer that visits is offered coffee or tea and a sweet treat and clients are indulged with a relaxing scalp massage and hair wash before having their hair styled. The 1,600-sq.-ft. salon offers highlights, lowlights, extensions, thermal straightening, makeup and waxing. Insignia also offers a special defrizzer treatment, which is similar to Keratin (straightening) treatments, but which O’Conner says does not contain formaldehyde and does not take three days to take effect. There also are a wide variety of high-end hair and skin products for sale including Mixed Chicks, Davines, La Biosthetique and Lanza, to name a few. Melanie Moore (no relation to Kali Moore) lives in the Palm Cove subdivision and has been a client at Insignia for more than two years. “I was new to the area and couldn’t find anyone to do my hair until I

Telsi is very good about maintaining the health of my hair and she always lets me know if my hair is healthy enough to try certain styles that I would like. She is really the A-Z on anything I can ask about hair care.” Moore also says she enjoys the overall “spa” experience of Insignia. “They will do your eyelashes, eyebrow waxing and whatever beauty care

The store hosted an incredible one-year anniversary party last week which was attended by more than 100 people who got to enjoy great empanadas from Mr. Empanada in Tampa and Jamaican beef patties provided by Bibi’s, which is located next to Big Frog. Although the store is celebrating a year in business, the Pasco-Hernando Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and representatives of the Greater Wesley Chapel and Central Pasco Chambers of Commerce also were all on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Cardona and Garza, who live in New Tampa, moved to this area from Venezuela. Cardona says they chose this area because her sister Beatriz, the owner of Sign-A-Rama of New Tampa (located next to Nutrition S’Mart on Bruce B. New River Elem. & WCE Help Animal Rescue
In January, the Safety Patrol students at New River Elementary (NRE) recently collected bags, boxes and cans of pet food for the Labor of Love Animal Rescue group. The pet food drive project was organized by NRE Safety Patrol coordinator Holly Mitchell, with help from students at Wesley Chapel Elementary (WCE), who have held similar drives of their own in the past. “It’s great to have our schools team up and provide community support for a very worthy organization,” says Chris Gorman, who is the Safety Patrol coordinator at WCE. “The kids really take it to heart and love supporting the animals that need to be adopted. It is our hope that other schools in our district will join our efforts to help the animal rescue.” Pets that are available for adoption through the Labor of Love program can be seen at Petfinder.com/shelters/FL853.html. Labor of Love also holds adoption events on Saturdays and Sundays at the PetSmart and Petco stores in Wesley Chapel. The Petco store in Brandon also has adop-

W ESLEY C HAPEL Wiregrass Ranch Girls Fall In Regional Soccer Final
Congratulations to Wiregrass Ranch High coach Erin Dodd’s girls soccer team, which ended its season in a frustrating 4-0 loss at home to Harmony High (located in the town of Harmony, near St. Cloud) in the Regional semifinals. If the Bulls could’ve beaten the Longhorns, they would have made it to the State Class 4A Final Four. Instead, WRH finishes the season with an impressive 23-3-2 record that included a 2-0 District title win over Gulf High and a 2-1 win over River Ridge (both of those games also were played at WRH) to advance to the Regional final. Unfortunately for Dodd’s talented and still-very-young bunch, Harmony (18-1) had only given up 5 goals all season and the Longhorns held the high-flying Bulls offense (which scored 103 goals in 28 games this year), despite giving up 12 shots. WRH was led in scoring by sophomore strikers Anezha Blount (40 goals, 15 assists) and Berlin Waters (21 goals, 19 assists). Goalkeepers Dayton Wetherby, a sophomore, and senior Briana Friedrich, combined to give up

Although both teams were still set to play in their respective District tournaments at our press time, in the final game of the 2010-11 regular season, the Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) boys basketball team used a stifling fullcourt-press defense to trounce the Wesley Chapel High (WCH) boys, 85-50, on the Wildcats’ home court. WRH (18-7, 7-1 in District 4A-8) began pressing early in the first quarter and after a sloppy start that saw the Wildcats (11-14, 6-8 in District 4A-7) come back to keep it close early, coach Jeremy Calzone’s Bulls led 29-11 by the end of the first quarter, 49-18 at the half and won going away. The Bulls were led in scoring by captain and senior swingman Tanner Carey with 21 points (all on 3-pointers!), 8 above his team-leading season average, and senior C-F Michael Chase with 18, while senior guard Antwan Prince (averaging 11.4 ppg) chipped in with 12. Although rebounding stats for the game were not available at our press time, the Bulls are led in rebounding by sophomore swingman Rico Kerney
(7.9) and Chase (7.5). Prince leads the team with 2.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game. WRH also held WCH leading scorer Erik Thomas, a sophomore swingman, to half of his 16-point season average, while sophomore guard Christian Parra picked up some of the slack, with 18 points, 4 above his season average of 13.9 per game. Let Tampa Bay MatchMakers Help You Find Your Valentine! By Gary Nager There’s no doubt that if you’re a single or divorced adult man or woman above the age of 21 who isn’t at least “involved” with someone, Valentine’s Day can be a difficult time. Everybody and their sister wants to set you up with someone, even if you’re not seriously “looking” for love. But, what if you really are looking for someone to settle down with? And, what really is the best way to find someone in today’s technology-driven, Reality-TVdistorted world? If you believe the TV commercials for a certain on-line dating site, about one in four relationships today begin on either Match.com, eHarmony, Plenty of Fish, Facebook or other websites. Still, so-called traditionalists will tell you that it’s still best to be introduced to someone through a friend and most adults agree that trying to find a serious
relationship at work is a no-no. Well, New Tampa resident Nancy Wall, Ph.D., has another idea, one that is actually centuries old but somehow combines “Old World” values with modern technology — matchmaking. Her company, Tampa Bay MatchMakers (TBMM), was established in 2007, a year after Dr. Wall, who earned her Ph.D. in Adult Education from the University of South Florida (she also has an MBA from Crummer Graduate School/ Rollins College, a B.S. in Psychology from Duke University) earned her certification in Life Coaching from the Coach Training Alliance and had created the Tampa Jewish Singles Network. She also has been certified in Matchmaking by the Matchmaking Institute in New York. Dr. Wall and TBMM have appeared and/or been featured on many local TV stations, in local newspapers and magazines and she says matchmaking does work. So, if you’ve been set up by friends, tried the on-line dating thing and perhaps even dated someone from work to no avail, Dr. Wall says she can help you finally find true happiness, as she says she has helped bring together at least ten married couples and many more committed relationships.
Here’s How It Works Don’t spend another Valentine’s Day alone. Let Tampa Bay Matchmakers help you find Mr. or Ms. Right.
Nancy will first meet with each prospective client at Starbucks or some other informal, inexpensive place, for a
free initial consultation. She will get you to talk about your needs, wants and desires when it comes to finding your “soul mate.” She will even offer some helpful advice to ensure that you are someone she wants to work with, someone who she feels is a potential match for some of her database of more than 150 professional, local singles scattered throughout the Tampa Bay area, including many right here in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel. “The people we work with have two things in common — they are professional men and women ages 2175 and they have all decided that they’re ready to settle down with the right person,” she says. “If you’re just looking to ‘date,’ Tampa Bay MatchMakers is not the right option for you. In that case, I have absolutely no problem telling prospective clients to go on Match or another dating site or even suggest other ways for you to meet people.” Once you and Dr. Wall have agreed that TBMM is the right option for you, there are three “membership” levels from which to choose: Traditional - New Clients can sign up as a Traditional members with TBMM at no cost. It’s free and private to receive personal matchmaking. Select - This is TBMM’s most popular membership program. Dr. Wall says this program has proven very successful and will continue to be the
heart of TBMM. The TBMM team will do the leg work for you by attending various events on your behalf and prescreening your matches before setNancy Wall, ting up your introPh.D. ductions. Elite - With an Elite Membership, TBMM is your personal concierge to help you find the love of your life. Services include image consulting, date coaching and role-playing. Preview photos and profiles of your matches and much more. And, Nancy says matchmaking does indeed work, as this message, just one of the multiple testimonials on the company’s website, attests: “Yes, I would say things are going very well between Patricia and myself. In fact, we are engaged to be married. We are very much in love and looking forward to a happy life together. Thank you, for it would not have happened without you.” So, even if you perhaps can’t find that certain someone by this Valentine’s Day, if you’re truly serious about finding Mr. or Ms. Right, give TBMM a call to find out more. For additional information, visit TampaBayMatchmakers.com or call 907-0410 to set up your free consultation. Good luck!

3 T’s Pizza, Subs & Salads Offers Great Value! By Gary Nager Co-owners Teon Gasiorowski and Tom VanDeVelde of the new 3 T’s Pizza, Subs & Salads on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., in the same plaza that includes Dunkin’ Donuts and Edible Arrangements, want to assure everyone in Wesley Chapel that although 3 T’s doesn’t feature true New York-style pizza, “We make our own sauce, use 100-percent real cheese and we promise to serve Tempting and Tasty food, served in a Timely manner.” As a native New Yorker, I will admit that pizza made on a conveyor belt will never surpass that made in a traditional pizza oven for me, but I have enjoyed the items I’ve sampled at 3 T’s to date. Teon and Tom (there originally was a third partner, whose first name also began with a “T,” thus the name 3 T’s), who are both from Detroit and have been involved in the restaurant business for years, are proud of their unique pizza sauce and the fact that they will always respond to customer demand for new menu items. “We’ve already added a number of new specialty pizzas,” says Teon, “including a Philly Cheese Steak pizza, a Buffalo chicken pizza and a “white”

Celebrate Valentine’s Day At Toast! Considering that there no longer are any fine wine bars located in Wesley Chapel proper, I strongly suggest that you visit the incredible Toast Fine Wine & Cigar Bar (located in the Oak Ramble Plaza on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., just south of Tampa Palms) anytime, but especially if you don’t yet know what you’re doing for Valentine’s Day (Monday, Febr uar y 14). Not only does Toast have incredible values on some of the best wines you’ll find anywhere, certified wine instructor and proprietor Hector Gonzalez and his partners also have a great selection of top-quality cigars, microbrewed beers and an ever-expanding menu of wine-friendly cuisine. I recently attended Toast’s “Taste of the Mediterranean” wine and tapas tasting and the food, provided by chef José Marmol of In Dit Catering blew the crowd away with items like his “angry” shredded lamb on grilled potatoes and wild mushroom croquettes and José has planned an amazing fixed-price menu for V-Day, featuring your choice of appetizers, soup or salad, entrées and desserts for lovers, plus two bottles of wine from Toast’s Reserve List. Trust me, it’ll be awesome! Visit Toast Fine Wine & Cigar Bar (14921 BBD Blvd.) at ToastofTampa.com or call 632-3105! — GN
