New Tampa Gateway Bridge Construction Has Begun By Sean Bowes After years of deliberation, debate and red tape, the construction of the New Tampa Blvd. Gateway Bridge that will connect Tampa Palms to West Meadows has begun, 24 years after it first appeared in a study by the North Tampa Transportation Network. On June 20, city workers began the first phase of the construction — clearing of the land. Workers have begun mowing down overgrown weeds and clearing out trees to make room for the new structure. The West Meadows (north side) of the project will be where the actual bridge construction starts. At present, there is heavy equipment and barricades on both sides of the projectwhich ultimately will connect to the bridge between New Tampa Blvd. and Commerce Park Blvd. The new project, which will primarily affect residents of the westernmost communities in West Meadows and

those in Tampa Palms Areas 4 and 8, will provide the bridge over I-75 and a twolane highway between Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms and the extension of New Tampa Blvd. in West Meadows. Actually, the bridge will be four lanes wide, but will be striped for two-lane traffic (one lane in each direction) for the time being. Tampa-based Prince Construction won the contracting bid for the project. elementary, middle and high school students. The tough judges gathered at Freedom to sample appetizing items such as; chicken broccoli alfredo, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and Thai curry chicken, not to mention frozen fruit slushies to wash it all down. Some of the most popular concepts included the sweet & sour chicken and the Philly sandwich. Students rated each item on a scale of “Love It,” “Like It” or “Dislike It,” based on the item’s appearance, smell and taste. Each student was given a survey card to complete after trying each sample, all while wearing their “Official Taste Tester” buttons. “The sweet & sour chicken is my favorite,” said Jake Hopkins, age 10, “It tastes really good with the rice.”

burrito bowls and Asian flatbread pizza. Around 200 students from various schools around the county, including some from Chiles and Clark Elementaries, assembled at Freedom High on June 29 for the second-annual “Fresh Flavors — Foods for Body & Mind Expo” to judge dishes that could be featured at local schools next year. The Aftermath Of The Caylee Anthony Tragedy Also Tragic No, I didn't watch every minute of every day of the Casey Anthony murder trial, but like many of you, I watched enough of it to realize that the State of Florida didn't do enough to prove its case against Anthony beyond a shadow of a doubt. Do I think Casey murdered her daughter Caylee? Like most of you, I would have to say yes, so I have trouble believing lead defense attorney José Baez that justice was done for both Caylee AND Casey because “Casey didn't kill Caylee.” In other words, I believe, as I did in the most celebrated trial of the last millennium — the O.J. Simpson murder trial — that another murderer has been set free. But, the fact is that Baez’s opening statements were the ones that proved prophetic in this case. The burden of the proof was on the State and while it was true that the prosecution did present “a mountain of evidence,” Baez correctly predicted that not one piece of that mountain was going to physically connect Casey to what seemed to most everyone to be the senseless murder of her daughter. Knowing that they had a flawed case from the get-go, why did neither the Orange County Sheriff's Office nor the lead prosecutor and Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton and his boss, State

An editorial by Gary Nager Attorney Lawson Lamar, look harder for other possible suspects? There is no “statute of limitations” on capital murder cases, so if they were sure Casey did it...and acted alone...why did they feel the need to spend all this taxpayer money and grab all these national headlines now, knowing they were likely to fail? “Beyond all reasonable doubt” is still hard to prove with physical evidence tying the defendant to the victim. With today's forensic science capabilities, proving your case with only circumstantial evidence must be even harder now than it ever was before. So, Casey will be free about the time you receive this issue and she is pretty enough and her case sensational enough for her to cash in on her 15 minutes of unwanted fame/notoriety. But, if my premise is that she was guilty and got away with it, I also have to believe that Baez, the man who led the defense team that got her off in the “social networking trial of the millennium” is the one who will really cash in. I didn’t think Baez did a particularly great job of arguing the evidence during the case, but there is little doubt that his opening and closing arguments — and his ability to accurately cite the flaws in the State’s case — were the main reason Ms. Anthony may now be the most celebrated criminal who got away with murder in U.S. history. See “Editorial” on page 11.

New Information In Joy Of Personal Trainer Charged Tokyo Owner’s Beating With Sexual Assault Nearly two months after being beaten by her husband on May 20, Lixin (Lisa) Tian, the mother of a two sons, including one who is a University of South Florida student, and the owner of the Japanese restaurant, Joy of Tokyo, on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., still remains in serious condition at St. Joseph’s Hospital in serious conditionwith injuries which include severe bleeding from the brain and a broken wrist, a police report indicated. Tian’s husband, Chunping Lin, 45, has been charged with attempted murder, domestic violence, and child abuse. The 160-pound, six-foot male was arrested at the home of his neighbor in the Lake Forest community just south of Tampa Palms off brucve B. Downs Blvd. According to a newly obtained report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), the child abuse charge resulted from Tian’s 10year-old son attempting to defend his mother. The child was knocked down into broken glass by his father, resulting in a laceration on his finger. The HCSO report states that immediately following this incident, Tian and her two sons ran from their home to try and escape in her red Lexus as Lin repeated “I’m going to kill them.” As Lin chased the family who were fleeing in the Lexus, the younger boy, who was not completely in the car, was run over by the left tire of the Lexus, “severely injuring” his left leg. Although we had no official confirmation from law enforcement or the hospital at our press time, sources have told us that Tian’s next-of-kin, her sister, lives in China and was not yet able to fly here to determine if Tian should be taken off life support, as she reportedly had no brain function.—GN & SB

James Elbert Williams, a 39-yearold New Tampa-based personal trainer man with a history of arrests and complaints from fitness centers he has owned, is being charged with sexual battery of one of his clients at his business, Club Tone on Linebaugh Ave. in Tampa. Williams, who lives at 10939 Cory Lake Dr., was arrested on July 1 at his home in the upscale Cory Lake Isles subdivision. According to a St. Petersburg Times James E. Williams report with the unnamed victim, Williams assaulted her on June 27 during a workout inside Club Tone. The report states that Williams assaulted the woman by reaching behind her while she was lifting weights, and sexually assaulted her through her workout pants. Williams is being held in Orient Road Jail, where his bail has been set at $50,500. According to public records, Williams previously has been arrested for sexual battery in 2005, domestic violence in 2006, prowling in 2010, as well as numerous traffic violations. Additionally, multiple complaints about his business tactics have been featured on “watchdog” websites like RipOff Report.com

Simon Iglesia Jr., 29, is being charged with one count of seconddegree attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault. Iglesia is suspected of shooting three rounds at a moving vehicle in the Northwood subdivision in Wesley Chapel on June 21. Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Deputy Vincent Mazzara detained Iglesia, who had a warrant for his arrest, on June 29, after Iglesia was seen driving near the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and S.R. 54. According to PCSO, a fight broke out on the basketball court between Iglesia and Mohammed Faraj. After the altercation, Faraj drove off in his green Honda Civic, which was followed by Iglesia in a black Volkswagen. Then, officials say, Iglesia fired off three shots from his moving car at the Civic. One bullet hit a resident’s garage at 2736 La Jolla Way in Northwood, another struck the Civic’s bumper, and the last one went through the car’s door and struck Faraj in his side. Faraj, a 20-year-old who lives in Wesley Chapel, has been released from the hospital for his injuries; however the bullet that struck him has not yet been removed. At our press time, it was still unclear as to what type of gun was shot at Faraj; however, investigators say they have found .45-caliber

bullet casings at the scene of the crime. Iglesia, of 6334 Boyette Rd. also in Wesley Chapel, has bail currently set at $350,000.

Prescription Drugs Blamed In Two Separate Shootings This shooting is just the latest in a spree of shootings in Wesley Chapel since June 13. Two other separate instances are believed to involve the sale of prescription drugs, and have yet to result in any arrests. One shooting involved Cesario Acosta III, a convicted felon, who shot Tony Barnes, 20, in the abdomen at the Ashley Pines Community Playground near Smith Rd. and Ashley Pines Pl. Police are still looking for Acosta, who PCSO say should be Wanted: considered armed Cesario Acosta III and dangerous. Acosta has large tattoos on his neck. On June 27, a masked man broke into Platt’s home at 9:25 p.m. and shot him in the face. Investigators say his wounds were not life-threatening, though he did sustain serious injuries to his cheek, neck and upper chest area. No arrests have been made. PCSO had no comment on any possible leads on the shooter.

HCSO Identifies Woman Found In No. Tampa Pond The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has identified the woman’s body found floating in the middle of a retention pond at Ashton Park Apartments, just south of New Tampa, as Alex Elizabeth Paish, 24. Paish’s body was found at the apartment complex where she lived, located at 14609 Banyan Bluff Dr., near the intersection of E. Bearss Ave and N. 22nd St. A resident of the apartment complex called authorities at 9:15 a.m. on June, 10 to report the body in the pond. Meadow Pointe Woman Arrested After House Fire A Wesley Chapel woman’s love for her cat landed her in jail with one charge of battery on a law enforcement officer (LEO) and another charge of battery on a firefighter. Deana Marie Melendez, 51, was outside her home at 1108 Crimson Clover Ln. in The Woodlands subdivision of Meadow Pointe, where Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies and Pasco Fire Rescue (PFR) were dispatched to control a blazing fire on June 21. As flames swallowed up Melendez’s home, she attempted to enter the home to find the cat. A PCSO deputy restrained Melendez who

All of the Residents of the home (cats included), made Deana it out of the house Melendez safely, officials said. PFR responded to the fire around 4:14 a.m., and had it under control by 5 a.m. However, the fire had essentially destroyed the entire home; leaving only a few walls standing after the fire was extinguished. Melendez’s neighbor, Ty Hendricks, applauded the PFR for their efforts in putting out the destructive fire, “Those guys did an amazing job of getting that fire out,” said Hendricks. It also was reported that while PFR was The Meadow Pointe home of Deana Melendez was trying to restrain destroyed in a house fire on June 21.

“Bridge” Continued from page 1 rules did not allow them to deny the permit for construction, despite the traffic and safety concerns expressed in an unsuccessful lawsuit brought forward by West Meadows resident Evelyn Romano. While many New Tampa residents are happy about the soon-to-be-built Gateway Bridge, because it will offer a way to get north and south of BBD/I75 interchange without driving on BBD, a few in the affected neighborhoods have voiced their opposition against the bridge, saying that the benefits do not justify its $14-million price tag, and also citing safety as a concern. Attorney and Tampa Palms Resident Warren Dixon has been involved in the controversy surrounding the bridge for several years. Dixon, and his client, Romano, originally opposed the bridge, in part, because it could eventually be the link to the proposed New Tampa East-West Connector Roadway (E-W Rd.). Dixon says that if the E-W Rd. is built, it would bring an influx of high-speed traffic to the residential neighborhoods that surround public schools (Freedom, High, Liberty Middle School and Chiles and Clark Elementaries) and New Tampa’s City

10

Recreation Center and Skatepark. Safety of the adjacent neighborhoods that border the construction is a concern for Dixon and his client. A traffic light will be erected near Freedom High to control the expected increase in traffic at the south end of the bridge, city officials said. Dixon admits that bridge will be a convenience to the residents and the businesses once the construction is completed, but he would like to see it remain only a two-lane bridge, instead of expanding to the four-lanes, which it will be large enough to accommodate. Nonetheless, there are still many local residents who are looking forward its completion. ‘“The new bridge also will make the roads safer for our children.” says Franic Mora, a homeowner in the Richmond Place subdivision. “It allows the school buses to travel a less congested road to get them to and from school. Any improvement we can do to make our children safe should go forward as quickly as possible.” In a previous New Tampa Neighborhood News issue, we reported that the bridge will shorten the distances of five school bus routes in the area (which currently travel east on BBD), and the bridge also will enhance emergency response times from Tampa Fire Rescue Stations 20 and 21.

Marty Culpepper, a West Meadows homeowner who lives near New Tampa Blvd., is worried about the effect the bridge may have on his property values. “You tell me who wants to live on the road with loud cars, loud radios, speeding motorcycles and emergency vehicles,” Culpepper says,” These signs have been placed at the Commerce Park The (home) resale values will Blvd. end of the New Tampa Gateway Bridge site. fall through the floor.” Residents near that based on a drawing by former Wharton stretch of West Meadows and Tampa High art student Stacey Manchester. “Editorial” Continued from page 3 But, how Baez and fellow defense attorney Cheney Mason, who also is likely to be a big winner following the case, were able to successfully defend a murderer who wasn’t likable, despite (or maybe because of) her looks, isn’t the important thing going forward, in my opinion. What is important, at least to me, is the hope that the advances in forensic science will continue to be geometric, so that fewer and fewer criminals will get away with murders, rapes and other heinous crimes. I also hope that more prosecutors will learn the lesson from this trial that unless you have a case you know you can win, keep working the case until you have a winner and make sure you explore and exhaust all other suspects and possibilities before taking a case to trial. As for Ms. Anthony, I believe that anyone who doesn’t report their child missing for a month should be serving more than just three years for lying to the police. I also believe that despite Baez’s claim that Caylee’s death was a “horrible accident that spiraled out of control,” someone (or more than one per-

son) got away with not only a horrifying murder, but also with an equally sickening cover-up of that murder. I also believe that Casey Anthony, like O.J. Simpson, will be spending more days in criminal court in the nottoo-distant future, despite the certainty that she will make millions of dollars off the death of her beautiful toddler. But, most of all, I also believe in our criminal justice system, despite the fact I believe the silver-tongued Mr. Baez helped a murderer go free in this case that so captivated this great country of ours. A well-known judge and criminal lawyer friend of my father’s in New York once told me that although it’s terrible when someone walks away from a crime scott-free, he would rather let 1,000 guilty criminals get away with it than send one innocent man or woman to jail or be put to death for a crime they didn’t commit. So, I’m O.K. with Baez and Mason and the Anthony family cashing in on their “fame.” Baez and Mason did their jobs well and deserve to be going on book and speaker tours. And, I just have this feeling that Ms. Anthony will still end up behind bars someday. It won’t bring back Caylee or avenge her murder, but it will still be somewhat satisfying.

Denoncourt & Warenyk - Local Attorneys Who Get Personal By Sheryl Young Attorneys Heath Denoncourt and Amy Warenyk of the firm Denoncourt & Warenyk, P.A. Attorneys at Law, defy the typical “meet you in the courtroom” stereotype. They like to be accessible to their clients beyond the normal call of duty, and believe this sets them apart from the myriad of law firms in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area. Denoncourt & Warenyk specializes in family law and bankruptcy. The firm also handles estate planning, foreclosure defense and insurance claims. Most of these areas deal with extremely difficult issues. “Family law is a very sensitive area for people,” says Warenyk, who handles the divorce aspect, including child custody arrangements and financial settlements. “You’ve got family members who’ve known each other all their lives, children involved, relatives preparing to sue each other…it’s not like suing anyone else.” Warenyk also takes on delicate domestic abuse cases. Denoncourt, who deals with bankruptcy, foreclosure, estate planning and insurance clients, says his cases also demand sensitivity.

18

“These situations can be very intimidating,” he explains. “Some people, for example in bankruptcies, never meet their attorney until they walk into a courtroom and someone flags them down. We don’t work through paralegals or assistants here. We have two receptionists in our office. That’s it, except that we may contract other people to help in cases where we would have extreme workloads. But, we are always the face to our clients.” And that’s just how the two lawyers like it. Heath and Amy met while working for a mid-size law firm together, and each found out that the other longed to offer clients a more personal type of interaction. So, they joined forces to start their own practice. They’ve been in their current location in the Palm Lake at Tampa Palms Office Building on Amberly Dr. for the entire life of their firm, which will celebrate its fourth anniversary in January of next year. Denoncourt was born in Saginaw, MI, but received his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from the Florida State University College of Law in Tallahassee in 2002. He’s been a member of the

Florida Bar since 2003. Warenyk hails from Abington, PA. She graduated Cum Laude with her JD degree from the Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, FL, in 2004, and joined the Florida Bar that same year. But, their passion for what they do goes far beyond any documents on the walls in their office. “When I went through law school, we focused on alternative solutions, to help clients solve problems without ending up in court,” Warenyk states. “I still work hard at that. Here, we often act as mediators, even as counselors. Mediation outside the courtroom can save a lot of time, money and stress. It promotes a much less adversarial atmosphere.” She adds, “When it’s between family members, the more infighting there is, the tougher it is on all parties. And, judges don’t like to see two attorneys causing more issues than there were to begin with. So, helping people goes way beyond the money for us. On occasion, the families even come back together.” “Some attorneys set up a highvolume practice,” adds Denoncourt. “They have to hand off their work to

Attorneys Heath Denoncourt and Amy Warenyk of the Tampa Palms-based firm of Denoncourt & Warenyk, P.A. others in their firm. We’re much more hands-on.” Warenyk notes, “We will even help people figure out how to get to court, where’s the best place to park…basically hold their hands through the whole process.” The firm already gets most of its business through word-of-mouth, and they believe it’s because of the partners’ personal handling.

For example, Denoncourt states that, because they don’t put their money into billboards or other expensive advertising, they’re able to keep their costs low. “In this economy, we recognize that all people who can’t keep up their mortgage, or are failing to make various kinds of court settlement payments,” he says. “They just don’t have lump sums of money to hand out. They’re not ‘deadbeats.’ Times are hard. We keep our prices low, and we help clients with payment plans.” In the case of foreclosures, he adds, “The homeowners by themselves can’t get a bank to renegotiate their mortgage payments rather than foreclose. We can help families stay in their homes for an extended time, maybe even until they get back on their feet.” Since they work such different kinds of cases, do their clients ever overlap? “Of course, we share some clients,” explains Amy. “For example, when a family’s financial issues in my family law case must end up in a bankruptcy, Heath steps in.” Denoncourt adds, however, that, “Bankruptcy doesn’t have the same negative stigma it once had. Although some businessmen or organizations

may abuse the system, a certain type of bankruptcy really can help people survive financially, and retain their property.” Denoncourt says he handles all three major types of bankruptcy cases, including Chapter 7, which wipes out all debt because there are no assets to liquidate; Chapter 11, which is a reorganization filing used mostly for businesses; and Chapter 13, which protects assets and income by allowing a person to pay back a portion of their debt from what’s considered disposable income after their expenses. First consultations are always free at Denoncourt & Warenyk. The partners encourage people to speak with lawyers who give free consultations. “It’s a good way to start putting together the facts needed for their cases, no matter what firm they end up with,” Warenyk concludes. Denoncourt & Warenyk, P.A., Attorneys at Law, is located at 15310 Amberly Dr., Suite 250, in the Palms Lake at Tampa Palms office building, and can easily serve the needs of those in all of New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, as well as other nearby communities. The firm can be reached by calling 514-2860, or by visiting DenoncourtLaw.com.

Tampa’s Beauty & Health Institute—A Unique School & So Much More! By Sheryl Young “Even in a tough economy, people like to look their best. It can improve their outlook and their health,” says Don Kruse, president and CEO of the Beauty and Health Institute (BHI) in Tampa’s Citrus Park area. Kruse and his wife, Rita, opened BHI in the spring of 2006, after Rita got the idea a year earlier. BHI offers training toward careers in beauty, health, electrolysis and related skills. But it’s also open to the public as the first such facility in Tampa where people can take advantage of many medical spa-type treatments for a fraction of the cost at other clinics. Clients can come to BHI and rest assured that the students who perform many of the desired techniques are fully trained and supervised. Rita explains that, before a BHI student is allowed to actually perform any procedures, he or she must log a total of 500 hours in theory and practical training, with hands-on experience accounting for 220 hours. Those hours include rotation service there at the school or at a medical spa facility, similar to a medical student’s internship. BHI is the resulting vision Rita

28

had while in training as an electrolysis and laser technician herself. She realized that the only schools for hair removal training in Central Florida were located in Bradenton or Sarasota. She approached her school to see if they wanted to expand by opening a branch in Tampa, but they weren’t interested. So, she went to Don with the idea of starting a school here. “I thought it was a great idea,” says Don. “We started off with one building for her business as a technician. Then, after renting several rooms here, we restructured about 20 rooms and opened the school.” BHI had to go through rigorous licensing procedures and was the first post-secondary school in Florida to receive full national accreditation in laser hair removal and electrolysis. Rita serves as BHI’s director. But she’s come a long way from home to be a practicing technician and entrepreneur in Tampa. Born and raised in Siberia, Rita's family found a way out of the communist-ruled Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the 1970s by way of Poland. She moved to Israel, where she served two years in the Israeli military.

The Beauty & Health Institute, located in Tampa’s Citrus Park area, is both a school where you can train for a variety of careers, and a unique Med Spa. She also received her initial schooling as a nail technician and massage therapist in Israel. Then, she became interested in broadening her horizons in related areas and came to America. “Don and I actually met when he sold my daughter a used car,” Rita recalls. “I visited the location where he worked to try and get the interest rate lowered. After two years of encounters, the rest is history.”

BHI’s Many Career Opportunities The Beauty and Health Institute offers careers for people not only interested in making others feel and appear more beautiful, but in improving their quality of life after illnesses and surgeries. Students can receive certifications by completing courses at BHI, including: Certified Facial Specialist, Electrologist and hair removal professional

after completing the Medical Aesthetician program; and Certified Cosmetics Technician/Permanent Makeup Artist after completing the Permanent Makeup Program. After training, BHI students can take State Board exams in procedures where state certification is needed to practice their new trade. BHI offers initial training in fields such as medical aesthetics, massage therapy, permanent make-up, skin care, electrolysis and laser hair removal. The school also provides continuing education that satisfies state requirements towards renewing licenses in related fields. For example, a Certified Medical Electrologist can take courses at BHI to stay abreast of new information in areas such as HIV/AIDS, medical errors, diabetes and environmental health and safety. Students can then use some of this completed training to apply for federal relicensing. Daisy Oropesa, BHI’s school administrator, states that more than 300 students have graduated from the Institute to date. These alumni go on to work with doctors or perform the services as self-employed practitioners. Two of the graduates have become instructors at the school.

BHI’s Benefits To Clients Similar to a reputable beauty school that trains hair stylists, clients can come to BHI for treatments that are more reasonably priced than what they may find at a medical spa facility, yet they can rest assured that the students who will work on them are fully trained and supervised. Of course, some procedures are performed by licensed technicians, or by the two staff doctors that work with BHI – the center’s medical director, Dr. Robert Miles, an expert in the field of body sculpting (liposuction, vaser lipo, etc.), and Dr. Donald DiIenno, who trains BHI students in CO2 laser dermabrasion. Schools like BHI aren’t required to have physicians on staff, but Don and Rita still choose to do so. This further ensures that both clients and students are in capable hands. You can make appointments for electrolysis, laser treatments, body sculpting, facials, permanent make-up, Botox, microdermabrasion and other skin resurfacings, lymphology and tattoo removal. Many of these can be done at BHI for a fraction of the cost of what you might spend at a high-end med spa. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating or resurfacing procedure that can

rejuvenate the skin to look younger and smoother. There’s also fractional laser skin resurfacing to treat numerous skin conditions like wrinkles, stretch marks, acne, surgical scars, rosacea and other blotchy skin discolorations. Rita says requests for tattoo removal have increased, especially among teens and young adults who deeply regret getting tattooed or where they had tattoos placed on their bodies, as some tattoos can be a deterrent to getting a good job. BHI was featured in a 2009 Tampa Tribune article for its expertise in this procedure. Lymphology is a cleansing of the

lymph tissues, which tend to hold harmful toxins in the body, and is useful during the healing process from surgeries that cause water retention and swelling. So, whether you’re interested in a career helping people by being trained to perform these treatments, or you would like to have a procedure done yourself, visit the Beauty & Health Institute at 11309 Countryway Blvd. (near the Westchase area and Westfield Citrus Park mall). You also may visit BHICareer.com. For appointments or more information, call 749-1800.

Etica Accounting — Quality, Ethical Accounting Services By Alicia Pack “Etica” means ethical in Italian, French and Spanish, and that’s just how Etica Accounting owner Andrea Tocco, MBA, runs her accounting and bookkeeping business. Etica, which serves business customers not only in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel but throughout the Tampa Bay area, provides day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping services for small-to-mid-sized companies, including startups. While the company does not have a physical storefront, Etica provides on-location and off-site services for clients stretching from Dade City all the way to St. Petersburg and everywhere in between. Etica specializes in QuickBooks services, which is most in demand by smaller businesses. QuickBooks help provided by Etica even includes installation, support, training and “fixes.” Etica also provides general bookkeeping and accounting services, as well as budget and asset tracking. Tocco, the founder and president of Etica, received her MBA in entrepreneurial studies, as well as her Bachelor’s degree in accountancy, from Bentley University, which is located near Boston, MA. She says she chose Bentley because it is a leading business school. She has 15 years of accounting consulting experience, but Tocco has been in the small business arena her entire life. Tocco’s father is the owner of his own business, and she prides herself on coming from an entrepreneurial family. She says it is important to her to keep the family tradition of entrepreneurship going. In 2007, Tocco and husband Steve traded in their Boston snow

blowers for palm trees and beaches. The couple based their decision to move to Florida on their love of the outdoors and the warm weather. Despite the summer heat here, they both would much rather be outside. As avid Harley-Davison riders, Andrea says one of their favorite activities is to, “take the bike out and see the beautiful sites of the area.” In March of this year, Tocco decided to take the leap and go into business for herself. When she started Etica, she already had a business plan and the business name in mind. While working toward her MBA, one of Tocco’s Members of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce joined Etica Accounting owner Andrea Tocco and her husband Steve (both in light blue shirts in photo) for a ribbon school projects was to design a cutting ceremony for the New Tampa-based accounting & bookkeeping firm. company and business model from scratch. Freedom High Senior Wins Perfect Car for Perfect Attendance By Sean Bowes No playing hooky, no sick days, and no missing classes for vacation. It sounds unlikely that many high school seniors could complete this feat. Many high school seniors feel the pressure to take days off to look at college campuses, or participate in

“senior skip days,” but Freedom High’s Katherine “Katie” Janiga, along with 150 other high school seniors frrom across Hillsborough County, managed to go the whole year without missing one day. The difference between Katie and the rest of the local seniors is that she won a car for her efforts.

Katie Janiga, who graduated from Freedom High in Tampa Palms, poses with her brand-new Scion XD, which she won for perfect senior year attendance.

32

“I wasn't motivated to go to school to win a car,” Said Katie, “I simply just went every day because I wanted to save my absences for a ‘rainy day’ or if I got really sick.” On June 25, Hillsborough School Board vice-chair Doretha Edgecomb helped kick things off at Toyota of Tampa Bay on E. Fletcher Ave. to congratulate a select group of students on their graduations, as well as their impressive attendance records at the “Perfect Car for Perfect Attendance” event. The event was created by the Toyota dealership as an incentive for students to faithfully attend school. At the car lot, Edgecomb chose 20 names at random from among the 150 students in attendance, then those 20 students would then be allowed to pick a key from a fishbowl and see if it would start the brand new 2011 Scion XD (base price $15,045). Even before winning the car, Katie admired it, “It really is sporty, stylish and the perfect sizes for an upcoming college student like myself,” she said. Katie, who is headed to the Uni-

versity of Tennessee in the fall, was the 10th name drawn by Edgecomb. She was then deemed the winner of the silver sedan after the key she had chosen opened the door and started the ignition. “The moment when my key turned all the way to unlock the door, I opened that car door so slowly...it felt like I was dreaming!,” said Katie. The group of recent graduates included nine students who had perfect attendance from kindergarten through graduation.

“Food Tasting” Continued from page 1 Students like Hopkins were encouraged to write in the comment box to describe what they liked or disliked about each of 18 different items. “You all have very important jobs,” said food services director Mary Kate Harrison, “Make you sure you think it looks good, smells good and tastes good.” The results from the students’ surveys will be sorted out by HCPS nutritional services employees in the next week to pick the items which students found the tastiest. HCPS’s nutritional service department, which organized the food tasting, will meet to discuss the results from the surveys before choosing the menu for the upcoming school year. The event at Freedom also featured music, goodie bags and a raffle which gave away 20 iPod Shuffles to students after they chowed down on the new gourmet lunch items. Most of the dishes received great reviews from most of their critics, though one item was definitely “disliked” by many- the cinnamon sweet potato wedge fries. Also, some students described the fish tacos as “too spicy.” “The fries were gross,” said John

Tampa Bay Inferno Hoopsters Blazing Through Tournaments! They practice up to four days a week, preparing for basketball tournaments all over the state, and also in cities like Atlanta for exposure to college scouts. They train in the summer with Jade Givens, starting point guard for the University of North Florida. Their behavior is professional and serious, with a competitive drive that strives to win. And they’re a group of local 6th grade girls. The Tampa Bay Inferno is a nononsense Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team. Their coach, Harold Givens (photo), a 6-foot-6 Tampa native, trains the Inferno with a sort of tough love that is uncommon in today’s youth sports. No team member is guaranteed playing time in games, and practices are outdoors, in the summer. There is no doubt that these 11- and 12-year-old girls are run hard, but the intensity seems to be working. The Inferno is currently on a hot streak. This team, which has only been together for six months, has competed in seven AAU and Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) tournaments in Florida (placing in the top three in most of them). They also won the AAU State Championship in Clearwa-

34

ter in May. The team does not play regular season games, choosing only to compete in tournaments and camps, and their record so far is an impressive 35-12. Some people have called Givens’ coaching methods “too militant” or “too tough,” but Givens smiles and calls it “old school.” Givens, 51, says he has been coaching in the Tampa Bay area since he was 13. He focuses on fundamentals, and the team’s defense. It is not uncommon for Givens to run the same defense drills over and over in practices at the Meadow Pointe II Recreation Center. “I was never a very good basketball player,” Givens admits, “But, I’ve always been a good coach.” The local group was established in 2005 by Givens, his wife JoAn, and a group of concerned parents to create a team that embraces education, a positive work ethic, and God, he explains. The girls also must maintain good grades and an upbeat attitude to stay on the team. Four of the girls live in Wesley Chapel and the others live elsewhere in Tampa. Traveling to different tournaments and practices is part of the commitment for the parents. Carol Brower, the Inferno’s team

The Tampa Bay Inferno basketball team includes several New Tampa residents. mom and the parent of Stephanie Brower (a 6th grader at John Long Middle School), explained that the parents of this organization are as tight-knit as the team members. “We all work together; taking turns driving to tournaments or bringing snacks,” Brower says. The Inferno hosts annual try-outs for any girls that want to be a part of this competitive basketball team; however, there is a major commitment involved for the players and the parents, especially in terms of cost. According to Brower, it costs approximately $1,300 a year to have a

child compete with the Tampa Bay Inferno, without factoring in hotels and travel expenses for the parents, although the team regularly works together to fund-raise to ease stress on the wallets of parents. Desmond, parent of D’Asia James, a small forward for the Inferno, says it can be hard making the time to get his kid to practices and tournaments. “It is difficult, but it is worth it,” he said. Sato Wins Wade Boggs Award

New Tampa resident Brandon Sinjin Sato and Hall of Famer Wade Boggs (3rd and 4th from left in front row) were among those at the podium when Sato won the 2011 Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award for his athletic and academic achievements. Congratulations go out to my former Hunter’s Green neighbor Brandon Sinjin Sato for being named the 2011 recipient of the Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award. Boggs, the Major League Baseball first-ballot Hall of Famer and New Tampa resident who ended his 18-year career with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, was on-hand as Sato received the award, given annually since 2006 to a high school baseball player or team in recognition of their outstanding athletic and scholastic achievements. Sinjin, the son of Frank and Grace Sato, graduated from the King High International Baccalaureate pro-

gram with a weighted GPA of 6.72, and also was a four-year starter on King’s baseball team. He was named King’s “Teammate of the Year” for the second year in a row, was a cocaptain of the squad and had a .350 batting average his senior year. He also is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and the Principal’s Honor Roll at King. Sato, who admits he was “kind of surprised to win,” says he hopes to play baseball at the University of Southern California, where he has earned an academic scholarship.— GN

Oakley's Grille — For Gourmet Burgers, Sandwiches & Salads! By Gary Nager I have to admit that I was never a big fan of Quizno’s Subs, but I already am a HUGE fan of the new, familyowned Oakley’s Grille that has replaced Quizno’s New Tampa location on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., next to Dairy Queen (DQ) and in front of Home Depot. Owner Keith Oakley has nearly four decades of experience in the restaurant business. He has taken what he learned while he was opening some of the original Chili’s, Outback and Longhorn Steakhouse locations in Florida (among others) and created a concept that promises gourmet burgers,

sandwiches and salads in a clean, contemporary, family-friendly environment. “My family and friends have been trying to convince me for years to create and open my own restaurant concept,” Keith says. “This may be pretty basic food, but we hope you’ll agree that it’s great food at the right price.” Service also is a big concern for Keith, so he has assembled a restaurant “dream team” to create and serve the truly gourmet burgers and sandwiches that make up most of the menu at Oakley’s Grille. He started with chef James Holland, who himself has 27 years of restaurant experience, including much of the last 20 years working with Oakley at four different restaurant concepts. And, manager Derek Bailey has worked with Oakley for 15 years at three different concepts. Oakley’s “opening team” also includes Ryan Kaplan, cashier extraordinaire Stephanie Yglesias and Oakley’s son Ryan. “From the moment you step up to our counter to order,” Oakley says, “we want you to be treated like royalty. And, we always want your feedback about the food, our prices and especially, the service you receive. Our philosophy is that great food should be made with the best, wholesome ingedients.”

Born and raised in Middletown, OH, Oakley has been in Florida since 1968. During that time, he helped open the first Chili’s in Florida, when the now-humongous chain had only six locations. Keith says he learned a lot from Chili’s late founder Norman Brinker, who made his original fortune with the Steak & Ale concept. “I sold the first Steak & Ale for Brinker. I also The “opening team” at Oakley’s Grille includes (l. to r., was at the opening of the first Outback Steak House standing) Keith Oakley, Ryan Kaplan, Ryan Oakley, James Holland and Stephanie Yglesias. Stacy’s Gluten-Free Opens In Cory Lake Prof. Park When Stacy Hiles’ son Zachary was three years old, his doctor suggested he be tested for food sensitivities because Zachary was displaying developmental delays that resembled autism. “We discovered he was sensitive to gluten, wheat, dairy and eggs, so I immediately changed his diet,” says Stacy. “Slowly but surely, my little boy began to talk, make eye contact and socialize. Once I realized what a huge difference these dietary changes made in Zachary (who is now 5 and doing just fine), I wanted to help other families that also has a need (or desire) to enjoy allergen-free baked goods.” And so, Hiles created Stacy’s Gluten Free Goodies, which opened a couple of months ago in the Cory Lake Professional Park on Cross Creek Blvd. The opening of Stacy’s coincided with the relocation of the former Miracles/Maggie’s Tea Room, a longtime tenant in the same plaza, to the space formerly occupied by AAP Fitness, which expanded into the former
