Why Are There So Many Car Washes In Wesley Chapel? By GARY NAGER
Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and the surrounding areas are — fortunately or unfortunately — known for being overrun by regional and national chain restaurants, nail salons, multi-story self-storage facilities and, of course, huge car wash buildings. And, while some of these car wash

closed. Most of these car wash facilities offer recurring monthly memberships that the companies are hoping you’ll use like many people do gym memberships — meaning they hope you use them as little as possible or not at all as you continue to pay each month for the equivalent price of two

The Hub At Lexington Will Offer Another Opportunity To Stay Local By GARY NAGER Editorial
The buzz words are “downtown,” “neo-traditional” and even Pasco County Commissioner Seth Weightman’s own term, “Eatertainment,” but more and more large developments in the Wesley Chapel area are offering residents the opportunity to live, work, play and eat in or adjacent to their home communities. We currently have The Grove at Wesley Chapel and its KRATE Container Park being surrounded by new apartment units, the Downtown Avalon Park Wesley Chapel area will begin opening its first building — with locally owned restaurants and businesses on the ground floor and rental apartment units on the upper floors — by the early part of 2024 and the Wiregrass Ranch development will likely begin developing its long-planned Town Center area sometime sooner than later. But, the concept of being able to eat and be entertained in your own backyard will soon not be limited to those new large-scale developments, as The Hub At Lexington will bring 40,000 square feet of “Experiential Dining & Entertainment,” including restaurants, retail shops and at what appears to be Shanks Indoor Golf & Bar (see pg. 18), to the northwest corner of Wesley Chapel Blvd. and Lexington Oaks Blvd. (see sign below), in front of the Sentosa apartments and is expected to begin building by a day or so after this issue reached your mailbox. According to leasing agent Courtney BissettHayes of Bissett McGrath Properties, The Hub at Lexington will include 15-20 local and regional restaurants in six buildings and an as-yet unknown entertainment venue, all with access to covered outdoor seating with 12 large artificial trees providing shade. It’s being developed by Center Connect Development, which already has opened its The Hub at Bexley (but not yet with all of its businesses open) on S.R. 54 at Bexley Village Dr./Northpointe Pkwy., in front of the Bexley community near the Suncoast Pkwy. As shown on the sign below, the developer prides itself on providing “Live, Work & Play” opportunities. Jannah and I visited The Hub at Bexley (top photos) during its weekly Friday evening street fair and while it’s reminiscent of The Village at The Grove, the covered area provides great relief from our Florida heat and includes the now-open Grain & Berry and Thirsty Buffalo brewery, plus The Poke Company, The Blend Coffee & Cocktails, Taco Bus and downtown St. Pete favorite Bella Brava, as well as Duckweed Liquors, a fitness location and more coming soon. Bissett-Hayes says that The Hub at Lexington is larger and will have twice as many artificial shade trees (12 vs. 6) as The Hub at Bexley. For leasing information at The Hub at Lexington, call Courtney Bissett-Hayes at (813) 340-7936.

Why Are There So *#%^ing Many Car Washes In Wesley Chapel? By GARY NAGER
Research by Jannah Nager Pretty much anytime I’m on Facebook, I see someone in one of the many Wesley Chapel Facebook groups making a snide comment about how many car washes we have in and around our area. So, why are there so many dang car washes? While some online critics believe they’re all money laundering (no pun intended) fronts, the fact is that they are hugely profitable, especially when they’re owned by a large national or regional company. One industry official, who asked to not be identified for this story, says it’s because, “just as McDonald’s isn’t really in the hamburger business, but in the real estate business (at least according to the 2016 movie “The Founder,” starring Michael Keaton as McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc), these big car wash conglomerates are buying up valuable land, putting a car wash on them and, many times, selling the land at a huge profit a few years later.” However, Glen Stygar, a partner in Woodie’s Wash Shack, which has 16 Florida locations, including one that opened in Feb. 2022 on S.R. 54 in Lutz (less than a mile west of the Tampa Premium Outlets), says there are more reasons why car washes keep popping up in affluent areas across the country. “For one thing,” Stygar says, “people in today’s fast-paced world no longer want

to have to wash their cars themselves or pay someone a lot of money and spend many hours detailing their vehicles, and they don’t have to as much anymore because they can get a membership at a local car wash and have their car washed as many times a month or a week as they want, for one low price.” He adds that memberships are the biggest reason places like Woodie’s and big chains like Mister Car Wash (with more than 400 locations nationwide, including several in our area) and Tidal Wave Auto Spa (with nearly 200, including one between Zaxby’s and Aldi near Costco) continue to proliferate everywhere. In fact, Woodie’s has another location
planned (but not yet under construction) on Oakley Blvd. in Wesley Chapel, which will one day be a neighbor to the new Super Target store in The Grove. As I mentioned on page 1 of this issue, it is very much like the fitness facility model that has worked for decades. Many people who buy a membership at an initially very low price (that goes up after a 1-3-month trial period) rarely or even never use that membership, but continue to pay month after month until they finally either cancel or begin using it enough to get their money’s worth. Stygar wouldn’t say that Woodie’s hopes you’ll never use your membership — and he did say that the company’s policy is
to never give you a hard time to cancel — but as someone who paid for a membership for three months and only used it twice in that time, I certainly can understand how this can be a profitable business model. Car washes also aren’t as labor-intensive as they once were — fewer people insist that someone dry their cars after they come out of the machine (and most offer you free cloths to dry your car yourself) — and while the vacuums also are free when you get your car washed, they no longer have people vacuuming your vehicle for you. Mister Car Wash is the current local market leader, having taken over two local Clean Machine locations on BBD in New Tampa,

and with two local locations on S.R. 54 (one in Wesley Chapel and one in Lutz), but there are currently ten drive-through membershipbased car wash places in and around Wesley Chapel — and more are on the way. And of course, the list in the next column doesn’t include the wash-it-yourself car washes, hand auto detailing places or drivethrough car washes at local gas stations. As for pricing, the cheapest prices we found among the membership car washes were at The Palms Car Wash on Post Oak Blvd., where a single “Express” wash costs just $5 and an Express membership is just $14.95 a month. The most expensive prices we found were at Tidal Wave, with the cheapest single wash being $12 and the most expensive being the Graph-X4 wash for $30. Monthly memberships at Tidal Wave range from $23.97 to $49.97 per month. We’ll look into another local favorite — self-storage places — in a future issue.

Research by Joel Provenzano Now that the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners (BOC) has voted unanimously (on Oct. 10) to award the nearly $22-million contract to widen a 1.33-milelong segment of Old Pasco Rd. from north of Deedra Dr. to north of Overpass Rd., the contractor — B.R.W. Contractors — has 600 days to complete the project, which means that this first phase of a planned three-phase widening of Old Pasco Rd is not expected to be completed until June 2025. The first phase of the widening is actually the middle portion of the seven-milelong Old Pasco Rd. corridor, which connects Wesley Chapel Blvd./C.R. 54 to S.R. 52 in San Antonio. Rooker Properties, LLC, which is developing the North Tampa Bay 75 Industrial Park (see rendering on next page) — an 800,000+ sq- ft. warehouse project in four buildings, of which the first 187,000-sq.-ft. building has been completed — has provided up to 84 feet of right-of-way (R/W) from the southern end of its property (north of Deedra Dr., closer to Sonny Dr.) for the project. Pasco had previously said that no certificates of occupancy could be given to the Rooker development until this segment of Old Pasco Rd. was widened, but the BOC lifted that requirement by unanimous vote in March of this year because the project was already designed, funded and required no
6
R/W acquisition. In addition, a temporary access plan will be used to allow vehicles to safely enter and leave the industrial park when the widening project begins. B.R.W. Contractors was one of five contractors to bid on the project after the county put the contract out for bids in June. As part of the contract, the traffic signal at Old Pasco Rd. and Overpass Rd. will be improved, and additional traffic signals will be installed at Lindenhurst Dr. and at one of the access points to the industrial park. Under the terms of the first segment’s contract, this portion of Old Pasco Rd. will be widened from two lanes to four, with 12-foot-wide lanes, a 22-foot-wide raised median and 5-foot-wide bike lanes on both sides of the roadway. The planned second phase of the project, which has been designed and is funded by the county in fiscal year 2027, will widen Old Pasco Rd. from the southern terminus of the current phase (north of Deedra Dr.) to north of Wesley Chapel Blvd. Pasco currently does not have funding in place, nor has it acquired all of the needed R/W, to widen Old Pasco Rd. from north of Overpass Rd. to S.R. 52. That segment includes Cypress Creek Middle & High Schools and the Pasco Hernando State College Instructional Performing Arts Center. So, the widening of the first segment getting under way, it will take several more years before the full length of Old Pasco Rd. can be widened.

Anand Vihar Residents At Odds With Developer Over Clubhouse Rules By GARY NAGER In September, I was invited to attend a meeting at the home of one of the residents of Anand Vihar, the age 55-plus townhome community (we told you more about it in our last issue) that caters to retired people of Indian descent at the southern tip of Meadow Pointe (just north of the gate dividing Mansfield Blvd. in Meadow Pointe from Kinnan St. in New Tampa). The resident, who asked not to be identified in this story, told me that he and some of his neighbors weren’t happy with Anand Vihar developer Santosh Govindaraju of Convergent Capital Partners and that he hoped I would be willing to help them try to resolve their differences with Govindaraju. I was expecting a few of the resident’s fellow homeowners to attend this meeting, but instead, there were at least 30-40 people packed into the home’s living room. I was permitted to record the attendees, most of whom said that although they loved living in the community Govindaraju had developed, they weren’t happy with the way the developer was running the community’s clubhouse, which Govindaraju privately owns, and the rules regarding the clubhouse’s unique Indian cuisine meal plan, which was designed to meet the dietary needs of the residents of Anand Vihar’s 167 attached townhome units. I told the residents that unless and until I was able to speak with Govindaraju to get his side of the story, I wasn’t going to be able to write anything about their situation. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that I was invited to attend a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Anand Vihar Homeowners Association on Oct 11, where a large number of the community’s residents were in attendance, including Govindaraju (who owns a unit in the community himself) and several other residents who also attended the meeting via Zoom. After that meeting, I was able to speak with both Govindaraju and Board member Kusum Patel (one of four members of the homeowners association Board’s legal
8
committee looking into the issue), both of whom responded to a series of questions that I believe will do a better job of outlining the homeowners’ concerns and Govindaraju’s position on those concerns.
The “Special Invoice”
The residents at the initial meeting I attended told me that they came together because they had each received a “Special Invoice” from Govindaraju’s Anand Vihar, LLC, for more than $3,600 each to pay for the Community Club’s 2022 Operating Costs. Although the homeowners were not required to participate in the clubhouse’s meal plan, according to Govindaraju, they were required to share in any operating losses the club may suffer on a year-toyear basis. Govindaraju said that the club suffered a loss of more than $500,000 in 2022, in part because of the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic and because of a lack of participation in the meal plan by some of the residents, despite the fact that he says the residents helped design the club’s menu. “The homeowners provide us details on what they want in services, and it is our job to staff it accordingly,” Govindaraju said. “For example, a super majority of the residents are from a particular state in India known as Gujarat. They wanted a specific chef who knows how to cook in the particular style of that state. We had initially hired a chef who knows general Indian cooking. We added additional staff of specialized first-class Gujarati chefs to complement the general chef.” The residents I met with countered that if the community’s club had indeed lost money, it was because Govindaraju was paying too many chefs and too many employees and that the clubhouse and meal plans were not up to the standards they were promised when they bought their units in Anand Vihar. The residents also said that they have no way of knowing if Govindaraju’s claims of the club having lost that amount of money are even true because they never get to see the club’s books and records, and they believe that isn’t fair.
This packed meeting of the Board of Directors of the Anand Vihar Homeowners Association helped the community’s residents sound off on their issues with developer Santosh Govindaraju of Convergent Capital Partners, who was one of the meeting’s Zoom participants. But, Govindaraju sent me what he “The members of a club are not believes is the proof that the residents involved in the financial decisions,” Goknew, or at least should have known, vindaraju said. “When you join a private exactly what they were buying into — the club, do you tell them how to run their Declarations pages from the deeds to each business? Here, by virtue of buying a home in this community, the residents owner’s homes, which read: purchased knowing full well that (a) “Section 5: Club Charges — In conmembership was mandatory, and (b) they sideration of the construction and providing would be responsible for all (of the club’s) the use of the Anand Vihar Club to each costs. ‘Anand Vihar’
Continued from pg. 8 Retaliation Concerns
Many of the homeowners I met with mentioned that they felt that the reason Govindaraju came up with the “Special Invoice” for his 2022 losses was because he has been retaliating against them since they voted in September — by an 80%-20% margin — to not allow the developer to annex the nearly 62-acre property he owns just south of the Pasco-Hillsborough county line (which we reported about last issue) into Anand Vihar. The developer said his idea was that if the original Anand Vihar residents would allow him to annex that Hillsboroughbased property into his Pasco community, he would be able to build an internal road (as opposed to using the closed Mansfield Blvd.-Kinnan St. connection, which may never open to vehicular traffic) to connect the two communities. In addition, he said the proposed annexation would have allowed him to reduce each Anand Vihar homeowner’s annual club membership dues by roughly $600 per unit. Govindaraju added, “We never retaliate. If you research me, you will find that ethics and spirituality are paramount in my decisions. Practicing kindness and operating at the highest level of ethics are the essential fabric of all of my activities...We have to deal with the facts that we have. The vote led to the conclusion that the amenities and clubhouse must be operated (and paid for by) the homes within the (Anand Vihar) community. The supermajority of the residents never asked clarifying questions prior to voting and did not understand the consequences.” He also said that he held several educational town hall meetings to educate the community about the costs to operate the clubhouse as they wanted it and shared that the costs per home would be substantially reduced by the annexation. However, (the homeowners) “seemed to be led by disinformation by certain individuals with an uninformed agenda.” As for the Special Invoice charge to each homeowner, “This is a very simple mathematical formula,” Govindaraju said. “The Clubhouse provides firstclass services as marketed, at a cost, and that number is divided by the number of homes. They may errantly characterize that as retaliation, but the typical common person sees it as basic common sense. Oftentimes, we speak to the children of the residents, and many of whom who purchased the homes for their parents. The children have more modern sophistication and have, for the majority of these instances, supported us wholeheartedly. They take the time to understand this basic common sense and are not blinded by the disinformation the residents share amongst themselves on their internal social media.”
10
Above is the brochure developer Santosh Govindaraju created to sell homes in Anand Vihar. He says that despite the resident complaints about him and the cost of the clubhouse’s meal plan, he has delivered on his promise of “Luxury Living at its Finest.”
The $10,000 Question
Although Govindaraju claims that the Declarations have not changed since 2016, the residents in attendance at that first meeting said that they believed Govindaraju had, in fact, changed the Declarations since the time some of them bought their homes (as some had bought in Anand Vihar as early as 2017), when Govindaraju began selling homes in Anand Vihar. They said that when they bought their units, there was no requirement that if they sold, the new buyer would have to pay the developer an additional $10,000 “Initiation Fee” to join the club. But, they claimed they didn’t receive notice of this Initiation Fee until after the vote to not allow the proposed annexation of the Hillsborough-based property. However, Govindaraju countered that, “The Declarations (have) not changed. The rights and duties of the Club Owner are black and white there. This is a private club in a luxury resort-style community. This (type of requirement) is customary in such lifestyle communities and not out of the ordinary. I can’t say much more on this topic due to the threatened litigation.” Meanwhile, Patel, on behalf of the legal committee for the homeowners association’s Board of Directors, replied, “The matter is under litigation for a reason. The club owner’s attempts to change (the) Declarations, as part of annexing his Hillsborough property, was overwhelmingly rejected. The change would have inserted a new clause — Article IX.5(i) — requiring new owners to pay an initiation fee. At present, there is no language in the Master Declaration that supports the club owner’s ability to collect an initiation fee. Collection now is merely a bullying tactic.” To that end, I asked Govindaraju if the homeowners had voted to allow him to annex that other property, how that
would work, both tax-wise and with regards to the club and meal plan. He responded, “There are no tax issues. If you live in Anand Vihar, you would pay Pasco taxes. If you live in the new community, you would pay Hillsborough taxes.” He added, however, “This is a simple mathematical formula. The total costs would then be divided by a larger denominator, reducing the per-household cost, which we had estimated at $600 per year in savings per home. But, Patel again countered, “Sharing our club house would increase the load on our facilities when they are (already) inadequate for our size. Sharing the clubhouse (with the Hillsborough community) would have allowed Mr. Govindaraju to build a much smaller facility in his new community, saving him millions in both land and building cost.”
Powerful Marketing
Many of the people I spoke with said that the reason they bought into Anand Vihar was because they went around to homes in the community beforehand and spoke with the homeowners, all of whom were people of Indian descent who said they loved living there. I asked Govindaraju whether or not that was the huge help I assumed it must have been to be able to market the community to Indian people. I also asked him if he was concerned about his ability to sell homes in the new community, now that it seems so many people in the original community are less happy than they were before? “I have never been afraid of any threats of any kind based on the spiritual principles that (a) fear is death, and (b) no decisions in life should ever be based on any sort of fear whatsoever,” he replied. “All people should be mindful when spreading information that they are not spreading disinformation and be subject to personal liability. I simply work with the highest ethics, honor the truth, and always have absolute faith in the universe.” He added, however, that it was important that both I and the Anand Vihar residents understand that, “We already have 20 of the homes in the next phase pre-sold and all but two of the homes are sold to either existing residents of Anand Vihar or their immediate family members. We expect a significant amount of sales to existing residents of Anand Vihar who want to get away from the ignorant mentality currently prevailing at Anand Vihar. If I already have about 20% of the homes sold to existing residents, what does that tell you? I expect another 20% of the homes (will be) sold to existing residents, and we have designed the next community to cater to the more sophisticated buyers who appreciate and understand the nature of a private club and want it.” Patel replied that, “Many of those people bought those homes before the current issues emerged The final chapter is yet to be written.”
Possible Litigation?
I heard at least one homeowner at the Oct. 11 Board meeting say that he was hiring a lawyer and was hoping others in attendance would join him in a planned lawsuit against the developer. Patel also said after that meeting that the Board’s legal committee was at least in discussions with an attorney. Govindaraju said that he “welcomes legal counsel that represents the residents, because informed individuals with the ability to read legal documents are much easier to deal with than persons who do not have that sophistication. As one of the vocal Board members mentioned at the meeting, he is a doctor and does not understand the documents. Would you rather negotiate with a party who has the requisite ability to understand what you are negotiating or with someone with a perverted understanding of the subject matter? Everything I do is with lawyers. You do not invest $60 million in development without legal counsel.”
How Can It Be Resolved?
As someone who has no dog in this fight, I have promised both Govindaraju and the residents that my sole reason for writing this story is to help the two sides find a way to resolve their differences and to be fair to both sides. Govindaraju said, “We have tried to educate the residents and shared options and solutions but, unfortunately, they have not yet formalized any counterproposals or new proposals of their own. I have asked them to present plans, proposals, counteroffers, etc., but they have not provided any. It will get resolved however the universe intends for it to be resolved, and in that I have resolute faith. Patel replied, “We will take the “however the universe intends for it to be resolved (and see what happens). Govindaraju said, “Anand Vihar is one of the most upscale retirement communities measured by any standard. The residents are happy with the community so that should say volumes about what we have created. They fail to recognize that it is that way because of the meticulous attention to detail we put into every aspect of the community.” Patel again disagreed. “Anand Vihar is an excellent community for its social and cultural richness, not because it was built as an upscale community. We paid abovemarket prices, at the time, for our properties because we were supposedly getting upscale homes, upscale clubhouse, upscale amenities, beautiful landscape — not an alwaysfailing call box at the gate, developer-owned clubhouse, filthy and smelly pond, secondor worse-rate irrigation system, substandard drainage, poor grading, inadequate gutters and a host of other issues.” I agree that Anand Vihar is a pretty community with very concerned residents. How this situation gets resolved remains to be seen, but I will keep you posted.

Spinner Law Firm Celebrates 20 Years & Hosts A Pickleball Tourney own firm, “I want you to hire me as your legal assistant.” “OK, what are your qualifications?,” Charlie replied. “I don’t have any. As the owner of a hyperlocal business that will celebrate its 30th anniversary in February of next year, I have seen a lot of businesses come and go over the years and celebrated many anniversaries with dozens of those businesses. One of the companies I feel particularly close to is the Spinner Law Firm, headed by Charles S. (“Charlie”) Spinner, Esq., which celebrated its 20th anniversary of serving the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel communities on Oct. 5. In addition to a North Tampa Bay Chamber ribbon cutting, the event included a proclamation given to Spinner by Chamber president & CEO Hope Kennedy, a short video created by Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel president (and local videographer) David Alvarez, a red carpet for Charlie and his staff, an appearance by a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office K9 therapy dog, free drinks and a huge crudité table...and something that hit a lot closer to home for yours truly. Charlie talked about meeting his first employee, office administrator Vicki Portfolio, when both were walking their dogs in a park in early 2003. Vicki was in charge of the “Beer School” at the Busch Gardens Hospitality House at the time. Charlie was working for an insurance defense firm in downtown Tampa and told Vicki he was considering branching out on his own one day. Vicki told him that when he did start his

Hilton Garden Inn Celebrates Five Years In Wesley Chapel With A Donation By Gary Nager Sometimes, the most exciting thing about a ribbon-cutting event is the food. But, while the fifth anniversary celebration for the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel did include some pretty great food — and free drinks — the hotels market director of sales Lisa Moore and area general manager Charlie Whiteacre turned their North Tampa Bay Chamber ribbon cutting on Oct. 12 into something much more impressive, with more than 100 people attending. First of all, Moore had unique set-ups in three of the Hilton’s meeting rooms — one with rows of chairs, as though for a lecture, one with a circular
conference table and the third with tables and chairs with black linens and gold sashes around the chairs, as you would have for a wedding or other special event. She also set loose the hotel’s catering staff, led by Chef Marcia, which provided a beautiful fruit display, deviled eggs, wrap sandwiches cut sushistyle, as well as pulled pork sliders, big fried shrimp, crispy egg rolls and more. But, perhaps the best thing was that Whiteacre and Moore had the Hilton gave a $1,000 donation and asked attendees to bring unwrapped toys to donate to “Celebrate Birthdays,” a 501(c) (3) nonprofit whose mission is “to ensure that every foster child, and all children, have the opportunity to celebrate their The Hilton Garden Inn’s fifth anniversary celebration included a $1,000 donation (above) and more than 150 toys (left) donated to the Celebrate Birthdays nonprofit organization. Business Briefs — Shanks Indoor Golf, O’Reilly Auto Parts & Ribbon Cuttings By GARY NAGER
Research by Joel Provenzano As initially reported in my editorial on page 3 of this issue, the area along Wesley Chapel Blvd. in front of the Lexington Oaks development is suddenly alive with new construction. We previously reported about the nearly completed Sentosa Lexington apartments, located south of Lexington (Lex) Oaks Blvd., as well as about a new Moe’s SW Grill-anchored retail/office plaza north of Lexington Oaks Blvd. on Wesley Chapel (WC) Blvd. Now, however, although construction has not yet begun, The Hub at Lexington is getting ready to begin vertical construction in front of Sonesta (as reported on page 3) by Nov. 1. And, although The Hub leasing agent Courtney Bissett-Hayes didn’t confirm it for us, Shanks Indoor Golf & Bar (IGB) reported on its Facebook page that it is “Coming Soon to Wesley Chapel — Nov./Dec. 2024.” The Facebook announcement from Sept. 29 says, “Shanks IGB is an indoor facility that offers a realistic golfing experience through the use of advanced technology. Shanks IGB features multiple simulators equipped with high-definition screens, sensors, and computer software that accurately recreate the look and feel of many renowned golf courses. Players can use their own clubs and hit real golf balls into the screen, which tracks the ball’s trajectory and provides instant feedback on distance, accuracy, and shot data. Shanks IGB will provide a comfortable environment with amenities like lounge areas, refreshments, apparel and equipment, DIY Maintenance Stations, and professional instruction, allowing golf enthusiasts to play, practice, and improve their game regardless of weather conditions or time of day.” Our editorial researcher Joel Provenzano was able to locate a Pasco County development record stating that, “The project is proposing the development of a 40,000-sq.-ft. retail/restaurant center at the SW corner of WC Blvd. and Lex Oaks Blvd. This project is a part of the Lexington Oaks Plaza MPUD.” The property owner is listed as Specialty Restaurants Corp. in Costa Mesa, CA, and the applicant on the development request is Landis Evans + Partners in Lutz. For more information, visit ShanksIndoorGolfBar.com.
O’Reilly Auto Parts Isn’t Shanks
A while before I heard about Shanks, Jannah and I had been seeing a new building under construction at the southern end of the Sentosa apartments and wondered what it was, so I had Joel check it out and he found that
the building (top right photo) — which seemed to have no windows so we assumed it wasn’t a restaurant — and Joel found that it was an O’Reilly Auto Parts store, not Shanks (or another restaurant), as I had originally hoped. We had no further information about the building at our press time, as Joel couldn’t find any actual plans for the nearly-completed store, other than an application by One Oak Development, LLC, of Clearwater. The property owner also is Specialty Restaurants Corp.
Recent NTBC Ribbon-Cutting Events
In addition to the Spinner Law Firm and Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel events (see pages 14-17) in conjunction with the North Tampa Bay Chamber (NTBC), we attended a couple of other recent ribbon cuttings events where the NTBC brought its scissors. The first, on Oct. 17 was for Shells Florida Realty (center right photo) and Broker/owner Michele Curtin, who has her office at SOAR Co-Working in Tampa Palms. Although she has worked for other real estate companies before, Michele said she named her own company “Shells” because people never spell her first name correctly, so she just calls herself “Shell.” The long-time New Tampa resident says she specializes in residential properties in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, but can help home buyers and sellers anywhere in Florida.
For more information, call or text Michele at (813) 751-1211 or visit ShellSellsFloridaHomes.com. Then, on Oct. 19, business consultant Jonathan McKeen-Chaff held a ribbon cutting for his Prepense Business Solutions at the Pasco Economic Development Council (EDC)’s SmartStart location at The Grove. Jonathan used his joint NTBC and Dade City Chamber ribboncutting event (above) to present Prepense’s “Cash Flow River: Our Philosophy of Marketing.” For more info about Prepense Marketing, call Jonathan at (352) 428-6067 or visit PrepenseSolutions.com. Good Karma Veterinary Therapy For Quality Vet Services In Your Home! By Celeste McLaughlin
Neighborhood News Correspondent There are a lot of reasons why taking your pet to the vet can be stressful, but Good Karma Mobile Veterinary Therapy takes away many of those problems by coming to treat your pet in your home. Does your big dog have a hard time getting in and out of the car? Does your cat detest being put in a carrier? Is your current vet’s office closed by the time you can get there after work? Do you have a lot of pets that require multiple appointments? Or, maybe, you just don’t like pet fur all over your car? The husband-and-wife team of Dr. Sharly and Dr. Jacky Saleep, both of whom are Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVMs), will see your cat or dog in your home, relieving a lot of the stress a trip to the vet can cause. The doctors say their practice is “fear-free,” focusing on ensuring that your pet or pets are as comfortable as possible and taking as long as needed to ensure that your fur babies have a positive experience. “We are completely mobile and do everything in the pet’s house,” Dr. Jacky says. “We never rush and it’s always fun to see pets in their home environments.” Dr. Jacky is a Miami native who moved to Australia to attend veterinary school at the University of Sydney. From there, she had the opportunity to travel to other countries as part of her studies and, in her final year of vet school, she met Dr. Sharly in Egypt. He is the son of a large-animal veterinarian in Egypt, where Dr. Sharly grew up. Both Dr. Sharly and his father completed their education in veterinary medicine at Assiut University in Asyut, Egypt. Dr. Sharly graduated with honors in 2010. He then spent three years working with his father, caring for large animals, such as camels, buffalo, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, rabbits and turkeys. When he wanted to do more surgeries and

Dr. Jacky says that when you reach a point where there’s nothing else that can be done for your pet, Good Karma can come to your home so your pet will be home and comfortable during his or her last moments. “It’s an honor to serve families in this way,” says Dr. Jacky. “It’s actually okay for the pets. Boutique Med Spa Offers An Inside-Out Approach To Beauty & Wellness By Deborah Bostock-Kelley
Neighborhood News Correspondent In today’s fast-paced world, where wellness is more crucial than ever, Tracy Burke’s Inside Out Aesthetics & Wellness redefines aesthetics by emphasizing the intricate connection between how we feel on the inside and how we look on the outside. Tracy is a nationally Board-certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and is Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C). Tracy has more than two decades of experience in the medical profession and fused her extensive medical knowledge, artistic skills and genuine caring nature when she opened her own boutique med spa in an outparcel building at the Shops at Wiregrass in May of this year. She is passionate about educating her patients and helping them look and feel their best. As a resident of Wesley Chapel for thirteen years, Tracy knew she wanted to open her new med spa in her home community. “It’s wonderful,” she says. “Wesley Chapel is a small community and the people here are wonderful. I wanted to build clientele and develop relationships with patients right here in my own neighborhood. I’ve traveled for work my whole life, always on the interstate, so it’s an amazing feeling now to drive 1.2 miles to my office and get there in 5 minutes.” Upon completing her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree in Family Medicine from the University of South Florida, Tracy undertook multiple training programs to attain her certifications as an Aesthetic Injector. With rigorous training and several years dedicated to the practice of administering neurotoxins, dermal fillers, utilizing lasers and providing RF microneedling, plasma-rich platelet (or PRP) and hormone therapies, skincare and all facets of the medical spa industry, she has developed a deep understanding of the treatments and therapies that are most and least effective within this stillevolving field. “I chose the name Inside Out Aesthetics & Wellness because my mission is to help people feel good on the inside and look good on the outside,” Tracy says. “It’s not just about aesthetics and beauty; it’s also about what goes on inside our bodies, including wellness and hormonal balance.” One of the med spa’s key strengths is its vast array of services. From traditional beauty treatments like Botox and skin rejuvenation to wellness therapies, Inside Out is a one-stop destination for anyone looking to enhance their physical 22

Dysport, Botox and Jeuveau are FDA-approved neuromodulators that temporarily interrupt the signals between the nerves and muscles responsible for wrinkle formation. Neuromodulators address forehead wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, neck bands and specific regions around the lips and mouth. “Neuromodulators stop muscle contractions which will prevent wrinkles from forming caused by facial expressions. Tracy says injectable fillers at Inside Out Aesthetics & Wellness include popular options such as Restylane, Versa and Radiesse, which serve to gently soften fine lines and wrinkles, boost lip fullness, provide volume to areas where it has diminished and refine the contours of the cheekbones and jawline. Tracy explains that biosimulators such as Sculptra and Radiesse, “will stimulate the body to build natural collagen and replace lost volume or add volume to areas in which you may have a deficit.” PDO thread lifts are procedures that use FDA-cleared polydioxanone threads, which are biodegradable polyester

so they are more natural than the ones made from animal hormones. They mimick our body’s own DNA, so our body recognizes it as our own hormones “We offer bioidentical hormone therapy for men and women,” Tracy says. “These therapies replace the hormones we’ve lost as we age or for when we suffer with a hormone deficiency.” She adds that these therapies also aid in heart, bone, brain and breast health. Bioidentical hormones also help with menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings, low libido, fatigue, brain fog and weight gain. Tracy says that Inside Out also leads the way in innovative weight loss treatments. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are prescription injectable medications that are FDA-approved for weight loss. They are designed to target appetite centers in the brain and gut. These medications essentially regulate the patient’s blood glucose levels and slow down digestion. Adults meeting specific weight and body mass index (BMI) criteria may qualify for these treatments to aid them in their weight loss efforts. Tracy’s vision extends far beyond the confines of her med spa. She strongly emphasizes the role of nutrition and lifestyle in achieving optimal well-being. Clients are encouraged and helped to make healthier dietary choices and exercise regularly during their beauty
and wellness journey. She believes that beauty results from good health, and she says that a balanced lifestyle is an integral part of this equation. Collaborating physician Angel Pagan, M.D., oversees the practice, and Inside Out Aesthetics & Wellness prides itself on staying at the forefront of cutting-edge technologies and research in aesthetics and wellness. Tracy is committed to ongoing education, ensuring that the med spa always provides clients with the latest and most effective treatments. “There are so many changes, advancements, new products and innovative ways to do things that you (constantly) have to inundate yourself with continuing education,” she says. “It’s a lot to keep up with — not only my license as a nurse practitioner, but for the aesthetic side, too. I probably spend 200 hours a year or more in training and continuing education.” Tracy takes a genuinely patientcentered approach. Clients are encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in developing their personalized treatment plans. She says that this open dialogue ensures that each client’s unique goals and expectations are met and exceeded. Tracy relays her favorite story of a satisfied client’s comments following a treatment: “She just turned around and said, ‘I love you, Tracy.’ She hugged me,
and she was just the sweetest, nicest lady. And I was like, ‘I love you, too.’ It makes it all worth it when I help somebody feel good, and they genuinely feel like I care about them, and that they care about me, too.” She adds, “I (always wanted) to do what I love, so I would love what I do. Aesthetics is my first passion, and I enjoy helping people look and feel their best, so it all ties together: weight loss, hormone replacement therapy and aesthetics. People want to feel good both inside and out.” When not busy at her med spa, you can find “T Burke,” a wife and mom of six awesome adult children, advocating for foster children as a Guardian ad Litem in Hillsborough County, working out at the Wesley Chapel F45 gym, hiking in the mountains with her husband Robert, or chilling at home with the couple’s fur baby, a pup named Jasper. ‘Shrek: The Musical’ Is Another Monster Hit For The New Tampa Players! Congratulations to the New Tampa Players, which completed six performances of “Shrek The Musical” at the New Tampa Performing Arts Center on Oct. 29. Jannah and I loved the premiere performance on Oct. 20 (photographer Charmaine George took these pics Oct. 22) and the singing, dancing, costumes and sets were all truly Broadway-quality, so just in case this issue reaches you on Oct. 28, instead of its planned mailbox date of Oct. 31, buy your tickets immediately because the show’s humor is more for adults than kids and it has a beautiful soul. Look for a full review on our “Neighborhood News” Facebook page! For more info, visit NewTampaPlayers.org. — GN

‘Grand Hampton The Movie Series’ Premiered ‘Anthology’ At Tampa Theatre By GARY NAGER Congratulations to local artist and filmmaker Antony Capers (photo, far right) for the splashy Oct. 18 premiere at the historic Tampa Theatre (in downtown Tampa) of his YouTube horror serial “Grand Hampton The Movie Series.” What started as a pandemic project with his family and neighbors in their New Tampa neighborhood has grown into a multi-year endeavor with a loyal cult following. The series takes place in Capers’ upscale Grand Hampton neighborhood that — the viewer soon discovers — was built by “The CONNECTED” solely for the purpose of housing citizens within the government’s witness protection program. The community has been experiencing some very odd occurrences, and — even more alarming — extraterrestrial beings have been seen roaming the quiet neighborhood’s streets. Beginning with Season 3, the series began branching out to discover the dark stories of so many of Grand Hampton’s residents. And, as someone who attended the premiere of the “ANTHOLOGY” of new chapters that bring three of these stories to life, I have to say that I came away impressed with Capers and his talented, all-volunteer cast’s efforts. Jannah, Charmaine, her boyfriend Brendan and I were on hand to find out what happens in the world’s craziest house in “ABBY.” Then, we witnessed the bond being broken between two brothers as they became part of an experiment in “PLACEBO.” And finally, we get to play a game of “SPIN THE BARREL,” where the winner actually loses. After the screening, Capers, the “Grand Hampton” creator, and members of his cast stuck around and
discussed the project and answered audience questions. Capers said that Grand Hampton is a community where, “anything can happen and I believe ‘ANTHOLOGY’ proves that.” “ANTHOLOGY” is part of the historic — and reportedly haunted — Tampa Theatre’s annual “A Nightmare on Franklin Street” film series, which concludes tonight (Oct. 31) with a showing of the original “Halloween.” “Grand Hampton The Movie Series,” which participated in the Orlando International Film Festival (OIFF) in July, has been at the Tampa Theatre before, as Capers and his crew of talented actors not only got to present his “Super Vita” movie-length episode but also film a portion of it there. Among those who have provided cameos in the series to date include New Tampa’s District 7 Tampa City Council member Luis Viera and former Tampa Bay Bucs offensive lineman and local radio/ podcast host Ian Beckles, who was chilling and cool in “SPIN THE BARREL.” The premiere of “ANTHOLOGY” also included lengthy “commercials” from Capers’ sponsors, including EmployEZ, UES-United Employment Solutions, Done Deal Promotions and “Aliens of the Metaverse,” as well as a dance number with Capers and about a dozen Grand Hampton kids, ages 6-12. All “Grand Hampton The Movie Series” episodes are available on YouTube.
(Clockwise from top left) Members of the cast of ‘ANTHOLOGY” answer questions after the new trilogy of “Grand Hampton The Movie Series” episodes was premiered at the historic Tampa Theatre. Antony Capers and Grand Hampton kids perform a pre-movie dance number. Capers was excited to pose in front of the Tampa Theatre’s marquee before the premiere. (Photos by Charmaine George)

Zac Brown Band Member’s ‘Hop On A Cure’ Visits Treble Makers Nov. 4 By GARY NAGER Now that Halloween is ending, if you’re looking for something fun to do that also will help support a great cause, you should get your tickets now to the “Hop On A Cure” fund raiser to find a cure for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” that will be held this Saturday, November 4, beginning at 1:30 p.m., at Treble Makers Dueling Piano Restaurant & Bar at The Grove. John Driskell Hopkins, affectionately know as “Hop” by his bandmates in the Zac Brown Band and his other friends (including Treble Makers owner Jamie Hess), was diagnosed with ALS in December of 2021 and started his “Hop On A Cure” 501(c)(3) nonprofit in March of 2022 to raise money to help find a cure for this dreaded nervous system disease, which currently has no cure. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Jamie and Hop and although he admits that his guitar playing, speech and ability to walk have definitely slowed since being diagnosed, he feels fortunate that his ALS is a slow-moving version of the illness. “I have a friend who was diagnosed in his 20s who lived almost 30 years with it, but other people die within just a couple of years,” says Hopkins. “It affects everyone a little differently.” Although his Wikipedia.com profile calls Hopkins the bass player in the Zac

Brown Band, he says he only played bass on the first three albums . He was the band’s co-founder with Brown and its deep harmony voice for the last 18 years. He also has writing credits on some of the band’s top hits. Hopkins will be bringing his John Driskell Hopkins Trio — which includes drummer Mike Rizzi, who also is a close friend of Jamie’s from high school — to play some of the band’s original compositions, rock and country covers and some Zac Brown favorites, like (maybe) “Toes,” on which he earned a writing credit. “Hop On A Cure raised over $1 million our first year,” Hopkins says. “Our goal is to raise $2 million in our second full year.” Hopkins, who got his start in Tallahassee in the early ‘90s, still plays guitar, sings and tours with the Zac Brown Band (which is famous for hits like “Chicken Fried” and its four platinum albums), as well as with his trio, and says he plans to keep playing and touring for as long as he can. “My strength and agility aren’t what they once were,” Hop told me. “But I plan to keep working at this until we find a cure for ALS.” Hopkins was one of more than 20,000 people in the U.S. living with ALS, which

Bring The Entire Family To Elements Of Stylez Barber Shop! By Nidhi Jani
Neighborhood News Correspondent Getting your hair cut, trimmed, faded, or styled can be fun and relaxing, or even a little nerve-wracking, as you wait to see your new look. One thing it usually is not is a family experience. Wouldn’t it be nice for men, women, young children and teens to all be able to go to one place for great haircuts and styles? Well look no further — Elements of Stylez Barber Shop, in the Freedom Plaza on S.R. 54, is just that place. Elements of Stylez (EOS) is a one-stop barber shop with modern music and décor and an upbeat atmosphere that is welcoming to all. The barbers at EOS are ready to cut and style men’s and women’s hair of all hair types and lengths. They also are naturals at keeping young children calm and still, so they can get that perfect first haircut starting at age 1, or get that stylish fade or blowout just right for teens before prom. Daniel Quintana and Briannah Talley, also known as “Danny and Bri,” are the couple and business partners behind EOS, combining their hair and cosmetology experience to open the business together in 2018. Danny has been working with hair for 35 years, first for about 17 years in the Bronx, NY, before moving to Florida and continuing his career here. He says that becoming a barber was something that basically fell into his lap. He was thinking of starting a new career path when he went to get his usual haircut. He got to talking to his barber and realized his hobby of cutting hair for friends and family could actually be a sustainable career. “After that haircut, I bought a pair of nice clippers and just never looked back,” Danny says. Teaching himself, as well as training with barbers and beauticians over the years, Danny discovered a passion for hair cutting and now can’t see himself doing anything else. “I have no regrets. If I had to do it all over again, I’d still choose to be a barber,” says Danny. “Even in my next life, I’ll be a barber. This career has given me opportunities and joy that I would never trade for anything else.” While living in New Tampa and working at a local barber shop, Danny met his girlfriend Bri at a local Supercuts 8 years ago. Bri, who hails from Detroit, is formidable with hair herself — or, as she puts it — “a beast with the clippers.” Deciding to work together — and work for themselves — they opened EOS together as co-owners and moved to Wesley Chapel, where most of their team lives, too. “We’re three female and four male barbers altogether, and five of us live in Wesley Chapel,” Danny says. “We love our Wesley Chapel community and watching it grow. We are grateful to all of our customers, near and far, who’ve helped us grow, too.”

For example, Booksy says that Victor can hook you up with an after-hours appointment if you need it, and also offers fades, beard colors and eyebrow shaping with a razor. Isaac’s reviews make it clear that he’s great with both kids and adults. Mo is your man if you need steady hands for clean hairlines and designs. Yissi does hair for males and females of all ages but is known for women’s blowouts and “updos,” as well as eyebrow and lip waxes, locs styling, curly cuts, deep conditioning treatments, beard trims and shape-ups. Beatriz is the only barber at EOS without a Booksy account, but many residents of Wesley Chapel already are familiar with her work. Beatriz was the owner of Cuts & More, the previous salon at this same location, before selling it to Danny and Bri, and she continues to cut and style hair for her many long-time (and new) clients at EOS. Danny and Bri have a shared Booksy account and they both cut and style hair for kids, teens, men and women. In addition to many of the services already discussed, Bri and Danny also offer men’s scissor cuts, bald head cuts or trims with clippers or razor, fades and hot tool styling. They are both great with kids, especially cutting fades and intricate designs like hearts, stars, diamonds, and even the University of South Florida (USF) Bulls logo. Bri can do just about any hair service for women, from layer cuts to hot tool styling to natural cuts and keratin treatments.

I love everyone in the shop. Bri has done my daughters’ braids before sports season. She’s also cut my hair and my son’s hair. Beatriz has also done blowouts for my daughter. They cater to everybody. Johnny C’s Italian Eatery — Your Place For Delicious Italian Comfort Food! By GARY NAGER
All photos by Charmaine George Even though there are other pretty great options for Italian food in New Tampa, if you like feeling like family as you enjoy traditional comfort food “Italiano,” you need to visit my friends Pat Ciaccio and Erik Ravenna at Johnny C’s Italian Eatery, located in the small plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. at Morris Bridge Rd. Jannah and I — and photographer Charmaine George — have visited Johnny C’s often since it opened in May of this year and there’s no doubt that the restaurant named for Pat’s father Johnny (a long-time restaurateur himself) is more of a sit-down restaurant than Precinct Pizza, the previous eatery in the same space. Pat and Erik, who also worked together at Saddlebrook Resort, are long-time friends who both were looking for a new challenge — at least, that’s how Pat tells it. (Above left) Erik Ravenna (left) & Pat Ciaccio are the owners of Johnny C’s Italian Eatery on Cross Creek Blvd. (Above right) Our editor “Actually, the only reason I’m here doing loves Johnny C’s linguine vongolé, lasagne (below left), fried calamari (below right) and (third row, left) mozzarella wedges. (Third row, this is because of Pat,” Erik counters. “I wasn’t right) If you like mussels, try the mussels posillipo appetizer. The Yea Babe! features pink vodka sauce (instead of traditional red pizza sauce), Italian sausage and mozzarella. The other specialty pizzas on the menu are all named for the five boroughs of New York City, as well as SoHo, but you can get any of the 18 pizza toppings on the menu — from anchovies to sundried tomatoes — on any of the three sizes of pizza and in the calzones. You can even get your pizza made with a gluten-free cauliflower crust. “We have an open kitchen, and a dining room that might be a little louder than what you’re used to,” Erik says, “because we want you to enjoy our food the way Italian families do.” We already have quite a few favorites. The Momma’s lasagna is spoton, the hand-breaded, fresh mozzarella wedges are delicious (“We weren’t going to do frozen string cheese sticks like a lot of places do,” Erik says), the calamari is made with Mike’s hot honey and parmigiana cheese in Enjoy the activities the batter and served with banana peppers, the tasty Johnny C’s Italian you love to do again. grinder features capicola, salami, ham, Be pain FREE. provolone, tomato, onion, banana Naturally! peppers and roasted red peppers, plus Dr. Emilio J. Fazzoli’s & Barberitos Are Coming Soon To S.R. 54 By GARY NAGER
Research by Joel Provenzano Although it’s not going to be located in Wesley Chapel, a new 8,000-sq.-ft. building now under construction on S.R. 54 in Lutz, less than a mile west of the Tampa Premium Outlets (and just west of the Mobil gas station), will finally soon be home to two new restaurants — Fazoli’s and Barberitos. People have been asking for a while about these two fast casual eateries, as the signs for both had been located at the site for more than a year before the plaza, which is being called The Shoppes at Cypress Creek, began construction. WESLEY CHAPEL Well, even though only the Fazoli’s sign is currently still standing, it appears that both restaurants are going to be included in the same under-construction building between the Mobil station and the new Take 5 Oil Change (see bottom photo), which is the first of what ultimately will be four buildings to be located on the 3.52-acre site. The site plan submitted with Pasco County by St. Petersburg-based retail developer Paradise Ventures, Inc., calls for three retail tenants in the under-construction building (top left photo), the nearly 2,700-sq.ft. westernmost one (closest to the already-built Woodie’s Wash Shack) with a drivethrough lane, which we’re assuming will be Fazoli’s, since all of the chain’s current locations (including the nearest one on E. Busch Bvd.) have a drive-through. Based on the development’s site plan (above right), it appears that Barberitos will be located in the 1,800-sq.-ft. easternmost space (closest to (Top) The burrito bowl at Barberitos. Mochinut Is Now Open On S.R. 56 & On BBD Blvd. In New Tampa! Last issue, I told you that Mochinut — which says on its website that its unique donuts are Hawaiian-inspired combinations of American donuts and Japanese mochi — was getting ready to open two locations in our area. The Lutz/Wesley Chapel Mochinut is located on the north side of S.R. 56 (in the former location of Pho 54, next to Astro Craft Ice Cream and Mellow Mushroom; right photo), while the New Tampa location is in the space previously occupied by Mahana Fresh on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just north of I-75. Well, both Mochinut locations are now open and yes, the donuts — which are now served at more than 130 locations around the country, and are available in a rotating variety of flavors (see left photo for just a few of them), from biscoff creme to ube (purple sweet potato) frosted — are light, airy and definitely taste nothing like Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts. I still haven’t sampled Mochinut’s rice flour hot dogs,

but definitely plan to soon. All Mochinut locations also serve a variety of boba teas. The two locations are different from each other inside, to suit their individual spaces. For more information, visit or call the Lutz/Wesley Chapel location (25704 Sierra Center Blvd.), call (813)

Playa Bowls Is Open On BBD We first told you about it months ago when it was “Opening Soon.” And we updated the story when that original opening date didn’t happen (as happens so often here in Pasco County. Well, Wesley Chapel’s Playa Bowls has finally opened, at 2653 BBD Blvd. (in the same plaza as The Hungry Greek). It offers a large variety of healthy bowls. The concept was born at the Jersey Shore but is called “Pineappleland” because of its founders Robert Giuliani and Abby Taylor’s love of the acai and pitaya bowls they encountered during their surfing trips to Hawaii and California. Today, the founders’ shared vision has grown to more than 200 locations nationwide,

including 15 here in the Sunshine State. In addition to healthy plant-based bowls (including oatmeal and chia pudding bowls), Playa Bowls features fresh juices, smoothies and cold brews. For more information, visit PlayaBowls.com. — GN

Lotte Plaza Market To Open On BBD On November 3!
NEW TAMPA With the large population of Asian people living in both New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, there’s no doubt that a lot of folks in both of our distribution areas have been excited about the long-awaited opening of the Lotte Plaza Market, the latest link in the largest (with more than a dozen units) chain of Asian supermarkets. Well, that wait is about to end, as Lotte (located at 17605 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.) has not only scheduled its Grand Opening to the public for Friday, November 3, at 9 a.m., yours truly got to walk around — and take pictures of all of the departments — at the nearly-finished store shortly before we went to press with this issue. And, even though I’m not Korean or of Asian descent, I am truly excited about this 49,000-sq.-ft. former (and long-vacant) Sweetbay (and Kash N Karry before that) store, which is much more than just another supermarket. Yes, there are massive bags of rice, a huge variety of Ramen noodles and many other Asian staples. But, the thing that got me most excited, as you might expect, is that our Lotte will have at least five different options in it sizable food court (called Eatery Sijang), all of which are serving different Korean cuisine, although there also is a renowned South Koreaowned French bakery chain, called Tous Les Jours. The other food court options, which are sure to be packed every day, include Luna Tea, BB.Q Chicken, SGD So Gong Dong Tofu & BBQ and JAWS Topokki. Check the pics on this page for not only under-construction food court pics, but of the fresh seafood, butcher shop, grocery and Lotte’s unique gifts and housewares. Las Palmas Latin Grill Has Reopened!
NEW TAMPA
44
Although Jannah and I enjoyed the Las Palmas food truck, we are so excited that our friends Ramses and Ana Garcia had finally reopened their Las Palmas Latin Grill in the same brick-&-mortar space as it was previously, at 6431 County Line Rd., south of Bruce B. Downs Blvd., in the same plaza as LA Fitness and Five Guysww. Although the revamped Las Palmas wasn’t yet open as we went to press with this issue, Ramses and Ana confirmed that their opening day was officially scheduled for Oct. 24, which was after this issue went to press. Jannah and I got not only a sneak peek inside, we also got to enjoy a sample
of the delicious picadiilo that Ana was cooking a few days before the Grand Reopening, and an outstanding café con leché. For more information, visit LasPalmasLatinGrill.com.—GN
