S.R. 54 Widening Expected To Be Completed By December! By Gary Nager It can never be soon enough for anyone who live or works near S.R./C.R. 54 from west of I-75 to just east of Curley Rd., but the good news from the Pasco County Project Management-Design department is that the widening of S.R./C.R. 54 is expected to be completed and open to the public by the first week in December. “Yes, we’re expecting to give everyone an early Christmas present by having that project done on or around December 7,” said John J. Chiarelli, P.E., from Pasco Project Management. At least 50 interested area residents and business people attended the fifth and final public information meeting on the S.R. 54 project, which was held at Atonement Lutheran Church on S.R. 54 on September 8. “Despite some recent bad weather, we are proud to say this project will be completed ahead of schedule.” Chiarelli, county engineering serv-
ices director James Widman and Pasco’s construction engineering manager Robert Shepherd were all on hand at the meeting to not only announce the expected completion date, but also to thank contractor Pepper Contracting Services and design consultant Reynolds, Smith & Hills and take questions from the audience regarding this and other road projects in and around Wesley Chapel. “This is the only remaining active project we have in the Wesley Chapel area,” Chiarelli said, “although the Florida Department of Transportation is also widening I-75 in this area...We also are working on the design and right of way acquisition for the project known as the Zephyrhills Bypass,” which is a project that runs parallel to S.R. 54 that will provide another eastwest access to Handcart Rd. (Morris Bridge Rd.) north of S.R. 54. Widman said that the Bypass project had to be put off because his department’s budget was slashed from
about $110 million to $25 million per year because of the economy. “We were negotiating the final contract with the developer (of New River Township; the Bypass runs through the New River Development of Regional Impact) to have them do the project themselves,” Widman said. “That is a high-priority project for us.”
A Little Pat On The Back
Among those on hand at the meeting was District 2 Pasco County commissioner Pat Mulieri, who took the opportunity to tout Wesley Chapel, which is located entirely within her district, as Pasco’s current and future economic engine — and to thank everyone who has worked on the S.R. 54 project. “When citizens and government work together, good things happen,” Mulieri told the crowd. “We listened (to your concerns about the project) and we responded to the public!” Mulieri noted that although the businesses along S.R. 54 and Bruce B.
John J. Chiarelli, P.E., from Pasco County’s Project Management department, said that the S.R. 54 widening should be finished by the first week in December. Downs Blvd. have taken a beating during the construction, “This area, with the new hospital (Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel), PHCC (a planned campus of Pasco-Hernando Community College), The Grove, the Shops at Wiregrass, has such synergy that it will be the catalyst for great things.” See “54 Widening” on page 23.

community as a stand against terrorism. “September 11 is a day about uniting and coming together and showing strength,” says Rabbi Yarmush. “It’s about doing more to rebuild.” The first day at the new Chabad sanctuary was a great success. According to Yarmush, the attendance at the ceremony was about 130 people, a healthy increase from the 35 people Yarmush hosted for services at his home in 2008. After the ribbon cutting, the Rabbi and his congregants celebrated the opening of the synagogue by serving wine, cheese and decadent chocolate desserts. “We wanted to keep it sweet for such a sweet occasion,” said Yarmush. A Dip Into The Mailbag & Our Dining Survey & Contest Dear Mr. Nager: Regarding your editorial about Will Weatherford in your August 27, 2011, edition, I wanted to point out a small error. While I think that Will Weatherford is a great leader and will be good for Pasco County and the State of Florida, he will not be the youngest Speaker ever in Florida. That position was held by Doyle Connor, in 1958, at the age of 28. While Connor was Commissioner of Agriculture, my father, who was at the time the County Agricultural Agent for Lake County, had many dealings with him and I met the commissioner on several occasions. He was also a fraternity brother of my brother-in-law at the University of Florida in the 1950s. I enjoy your Neighborhood News. Sincerely, Daniel M. Norris Wesley Chapel
I received a few comments regarding my editorial about Dist. 61 State Rep. Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel), which appeared not only in our Aug. 27 Wesley Chapel issue, but also in our Aug. 13 New Tampa issue. Mr. Norris’ letter was the only one which pointed out that Weatherford will only be the youngest Republican Speaker of the House in Florida’s history, not the youngest state Speaker ever. Most of the other comments I received were regarding the, well, ebulWesley Chapel Neighborhood News 15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa, FL 33647 Phone: (813) 910-2575 Fax: 910-2483 Website: WCNeighborhoodNews.com Adv. An editorial by Gary Nager lient tone of the editorial and the fact that I said that as the head of the State House redistricting committee, Will and his committee could use redistricting to help his party in certain voting districts, despite the fact Florida voters passed Amendments 5 & 6 to the Florida Constitution in 2010. Amendment 5 stated that “Legislative districts or districting plans may not be drawn to favor or disfavor an incumbent or political party,” but more political folks than me (including a group called “Fair Districts Florida”) have said that the amendments only diminish the party in charge’s power over redistricting. It doesn’t take that power away entirely. I have written many political editorials over the years, but they’re usually associated with an upcoming election because politics is neither my specialty nor in any way my passion. My intent with the editorial was to try to convey the really good feeling I had that day listening to Will speak, despite the fact I’m a registered Republican who endorsed President Obama in last year’s Presidential election. And, I believe that what I felt about Will pervaded the room at Saddlebrook Resort on August 2, and many I spoke with afterwards — Republicans and Democrats alike — seemed to agree. I promise, however, that as we approach the 2012 elections, I will spend some time with the future Speaker and outline more clearly for you what he believes his accomplishments have been in office and what his plans are to help our state and local economies going forward.

Not only is the contest a way for you to win some great prizes, it also lets local restaurant owners know how Neighborhood News readers feel about them, their food and their service, especially in these tough economic times. We also ask those who do submit entries onto the contest to please try to remember that Wesley Chapel restaurants are those located north of County Line Rd. on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., on S.R. 54 from Lexington Oaks to Morris Bridge Rd. (near I-75) & all of S.R. 56.
In other words, Bonefish Grill and Remington’s Steakhouse are both Wesley Chapel restaurants, while Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Bruster’s Real Ice Cream are New Tampa-based eateries. In addition, while Amici Pizza is very close to Wesley Chapel on S.R. 54, it is located outside of zip codes 33543-45, so it isn’t technically in Wesley Chapel. We know it’s hard to keep track of which places are located where, but we hope you’ll do the best you can to keep things straight when you enter. GrillSmith Restaurants Donate Profits For Slain New Tampa Siblings By Sean Bowes Thanks to the combined efforts of Col. Parker Schenecker and the six GrillSmith restaurant locations in the Tampa Bay area, a foundation named in honor of Schenecker’s slain children now has $10,500 in its coffers. The one-week event began at GrillSmith’s Wesley Chapel location at the Shops at Wiregrass, where Shenecker kicked off the event with 13 of his close family and friends. Col. Schenecker, the father of Calyx and Beau, the New Tampa siblings who were tragically killed by their mother last January in their Tampa Palms home, recently teamed together with GrillSmith restaurants for a “Back to School Week” fund raiser that will donate the money to teens in the Tampa area, in memory of the brother and sister who were taken too soon. From August 22-28, GrillSmith donated 100-percent of sales from Calyx’s favorite GrillSmith dish, the Caribbean pumpkin crab bisque soup, and Beau’s favorite appetizer, the spicy Thai shrimp, to the Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memorial Fund. During the six-day event, 885 orders (bowls and

cups) of the Caribbean pumpkin crab bisque soup and 938 orders of the spicy Thai shrimp appetizer were sold. According to Schenecker, who worked with U.S. Central Command in Tampa, GrillSmith was the siblings’ favorite restaurant. Col. Schenecker says he has dedicated his life to the Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memorial Fund, which he started last February to spotlight promising Tampa Bay teenagers with leadership, athletic and performing arts opportunities. “We were certainly humbled when Mr. Schenecker approached us to help honor Calyx and Beau’s memory and shared with us that they were such huge fans of GrillSmith,” said GrillSmith spokesperson Alisha dos Santos. “By celebrating their lives during this Back to School Week event at all GrillSmith locations, we hope to raise awareness about this memorial fund as well as shine a light on two amazing kids who were taken too soon. It is our privilege to be able to help in whatever way we can.” Calyx, 16, was to start her junior year in the International Baccalaureate program at King High, where she ran cross-country, and Beau, 13, would
have been an incoming freshman at Freedom High (last year, he was an 8th grader at Liberty Middle School). On January 27, Julie Schenecker, the 50-year-old mother of Beau and Calyx, was found unconscious in the backyard of the family's Tampa Palms home by police, who had been summoned to the house by a rela- Col. Expelled Student Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ For Plans To Bomb Freedom By Sean Bowes The attorney for expelled former Freedom High student, Jared Michael Cano, 17 (who was described as a “quiet loner” by his peers), has pleaded “not guilty” for his alleged plans to kill Freedom students and staff members on the first day of school. If convicted, the teenager could face up to 35 years in prison. The State Attorney’s Office is charging Cano, 17, as an adult. On September 16, Cano’s lawyer submitted the written “not guilty” plea. The teenager was not present in court. Until recently, Cano was being held at a juvenile assessment center in Hillsborough County, but he is now being held without bail in Orient Rd. Jail. Reports of Cano’s plan had shaken some students and parents at Freedom, but after a hectic first day, principal John Farkas says the school is now long since back on track. News reporters, police officers and bomb-sniffing dogs surveying the campus at Freedom isn’t the start of a typical day at the school, especially not the first day back from summer vacation, but that is exactly what students at Freedom will remember from their first day back for the 2011-12 school year, just days after the Tampa Police Depart-
ment (TPD) thwarted Cano’s planned attack on the school. On the night of August 22, hours before school buses full of students would pull onto campus for the first time this school year, TPD K-9 Squads were checking every locker and classroom for anything out of the ordinary. But, Farkas says the school did open safely and the day went smoothly, with an increased law enforcement presence. Hillsborough County Public Schools spokesperson Linda Cobb said Freedom’s attendance was down 166 students compared to last year’s first day of school; however, she could not directly attribute the absences to the bomb scare. The fifth day enrollment was down 50 students from last year at Freedom, which has 2,033 students. “There is no way of knowing why the attendance was down,” said Cobb. “But a lot of the (Hillsborough County) schools had a low enrollment for the first day this year.” Cano already had a considerable arrest record and a manifesto on how he would kill as many as 30 Freedom students and two assistant principals. Cano, who lived with his mother, Michelle Cano, at their Cypress Run at Tampa Palms apartment, has been
charged with possessing bomb-making materials, cultivating marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing marijuana and threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device. Cano, 17, was arrested August 16 after an anonymous tipster Jared Cano, the former Freedom High student who has called the TPD call cenbeen charged as an adult for planning to blow up the ter and let them know school, has pleaded “not guilty.” about his plans, which, Since being expelled in 2010, according to TPD Chief Jane Castor, Cano has been home-schooled; his included a minute-by-minute plan to mother is a math teacher at Riverview kill Freedom High students and staff. New Tampa Woman’s Death Shooting Suspect Turns Himself In A convicted felon who shot and tion painkillers, according to PCSO From Fumes Ruled An Accident wounded Wesley Chapel resident Tony public information officer Kevin Doll. By Sean Bowes After a two-week long investigation led by Tampa Police Department (TPD) homocide detectives, the State Attorney’s Office has ruled that no charges will be filed against Andrew Grywalski, 22, a New Tampa man who, police say, forgot to turn off the ignition in his car, which left one of his neighbors dead. Officials with the Tampa Police Department (TPD) are calling the death a “terrible accident.” Family members and co-workers at Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) are still grieving over the death of Rebecca Hawk, 23, an “always smiling” child protection investigator for HCSO who died from carbon monoxide poisoning when Grywalski left his car running overnight in the garage of his Vista Grande apartment in Tampa Palms. According to the TPD report, Grywalski pulled his gunmetal 2011 Mazda 3 hatchback into the garage around 8:30 p.m. on September 1, and failed to bring the key inside with him. With the garage door closed over night, the colorless and odorless carbon monoxide gas from the Mazda’s exhaust filled the garage and crept into Hawk’s apartment overnight at 5207 Cypress Palms Ln., which shared a wall with Grywalski’s garage. It was just after 9 a.m., more than 12 hours after the Mazda pulled into the garage, when a Vista Grande maintenance worker smelled the Mazda’s noxious exhaust fumes. The worker immediately notified Tampa Fire Rescue (TFR), and started knocking on neighbors’ doors to evacuate tenants before firefighters had arrived. Authorities and Vista Grande management had not released the worker’s name at our press time. When TFR showed up, it was
6
already too late for Hawk. According to TPD spokesperson Laura McElroy, the fumes also affected Hawk’s roommate, Kashaunda Rebecca Hawk Joyner, 20, who also was inside the apartment, but has since been released from University Community Hospital. A 62-year-old woman who lived upstairs from the roommates also was transported to the hospital because she felt light-headed, but she was later released as well. According to HCSO spokesperson Larry McKinnon, the Sheriff’s Office is “mourning one of our own,” McKinnon says. “Rebecca had only been employed with HCSO for ten weeks and had just completed her class training. But, she was always smiling, she had a promising career and was just a lovely woman.” A friend of the Grywalski family has said that he was evicted from the apartment complex immediatly after this incident occurred.

After the shooting (Barnes suffered non-life threatening injuries), a warrant was issued for Acosta's arrest for attempted murder and grand theft motor vehicle. For nearly two months, Acosta had eluded the authorities, which considered him “armed and dangerous” until he finally turned himself in at the Land O' Lakes Jail on August 24. Acosta, of 4802 19th St. in Zephyrhills, was still being held on a $5,010,000 bond at our press time. He has previously been arrested in Pasco County nine times in the last five years for multiple drug charges, trespassing, burglary and aggravated assault. Barnes has no arrests on record in Pasco or Hillsborough Counties.— Sean Bowes

‘Insurance And Trust’ Lives Up To Its Name With Quality Service By Sheryl Young It’s an insurance agency with a simple name, “Insurance and Trust,” and owner Michael Chernoff has indeed built his Carrollwood/North Tampa-based company on trust. For more than 25 years, Chernoff has committed himself to providing the best possible service to his clients by putting together attractive and dependable insurance coverage packages, using the most highly rated insurance companies. “Our company stays between only six and seven people strong, yet with immediate and personal customer service,” Chernoff says. “When you call, you won’t get a phone message asking you to answer recorded questions or push a hundred options.” When he started Insurance and Trust 1984, Chernoff decided the only way to get customers and keep them happy was to be honest, knowledgeable, thorough and accessible. “My clients always have a way to reach me,” he says. And, it works. Most of Insurance and Trust’s business comes by way of referrals or some sort of customer connection. Chernoff says he has now

added some of his original clients’ grown children to his customer base. And, speaking of children, joining Chernoff in the business several years ago was his son Jeff. Although the Insurance & Trust office is in North Tampa on N. Dale Mabry Hwy., Jeff says, “I live in the Arbor Greene subdivision of New Tampa. I’m happy to visit clients and prospective clients in the entire New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area as well as in nearby neighborhoods. I will come to you.” The Chernoffs specialize in insurance for high-value homes and personal assets, cars, excess liability (umbrella insurance), long-term care and life insurance. “For high-net-worth homeowners, the way to insure a home and other structures on the property is not by placing the value on the price of the home, but on what it would cost to re-build it,” Michael says. “We’ll usually advise insuring these homes at 1.5 times their value. And, because we’re one of the few agencies in the area who’ve been doing this for so long, our relationship with insurance companies is such that we’re allowed to (offer) ready-made insurance cover-
age plans and add tailor-made options according to a client’s needs.” He classifies high-net worth homes as those above 4,000 square feet. However, Insurance and Trust does also have clients insuring smaller home sizes. Michael advises that, by using one agency like Insurance and Trust for all of your family’s insurance needs, creating this kind of policy package can result in an overall savings of 20 to 30 percent. He says, “We can, in many cases, even bundle the homeowner, car and various life insurance elements into one policy, instead of a client needing to manage and keep track of several separate paperwork packages.” But, he adds that Insurance and Trust also respects a person’s loyalty to certain insurance companies and can get creative to help them use an existing service, or find a new one. “We’re a full-service broker,” he notes. “We can look at each insurance risk and do whatever works for our client – whatever they’re passionate about. We’ll also be there to assist (you) when damages occur.” For example, they will do longterm care and life insurance policy

Someone referred us to Michael. From the very first minute we talked to him, our minds were set

at ease. The service has always been prompt and personal and has given us a feeling of confidence.” She adds, “We carry our longterm care and other services through Insurance and Trust, and have had a couple of claims which, because of Michael, have caused us no headache at all. We’re secure in the fact that he’s not just pushing a product to get a commission. There are packages he could have recommended to us where he would have made more money.” Regarding long-term care insurance, Jeff says, “It is more valuable than people know. We can obtain a policy for you that could pay for someone who becomes disabled or for elderly people. For example, say you decided to carry $9,000 per month of care. Your premiums would stop the minute you activate your need for the policy. That $9,000 could pay for livein assistance to help someone stay in their own house, or it could fully pay monthly rent at a nice assisted living facility, or help you get into an upscale nursing home. Plus, the checks are mailed without having to submit bills.” Other insurance ideas that people may not usually think to include: • They recommend memberowned insurance companies. It’s hard to get in, but since the policy holder owns part of the company, can-
cellation is highly unlikely. • People with a life insurance policy of less than $99,000 can charge their premiums to their credit card and earn points for paying it off in full. • Sometimes insurance companies insist on separate car insurance packages if a person owns more than three cars. Insurance and Trust can get all of your cars placed under one policy. • Wine collections, and the generators needed to keep the wine at the right temperature, can be insured. • The Chernoffs offer a hurricane protection service – licensed people that can go into areas that have been evacuated before homeowners are allowed back – to secure or repair a house at no extra charge. • There are even insurance policies for kidnap and ransom cases, illness while traveling, identity theft, insurance for Boards of Directors of non-profit agencies, staff theft insurance for employers in certain instances and more. Insurance and Trust is located at 8548 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., near Humphrey St., in Carrollwood. The phone number is 933-7333. For additional information, visit InsuranceAndTrust.com

Local Podiatrist Wants To Step Up Your Foot Care! By Camille Gillies One of the things you don’t need to worry about if you’re a New Tampa or Wesley Chapel resident is trying to find a great podiatrist, orthopedic surgeon or pain management specialist nearby. The Medical Group of Tampa Bay, part of the Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Orthopaedic and Spine Institute, has an office staffed with experts in these fields which is conveniently located in the Summergate Professional Center, directly behind Sam’s Club off S.R. 56. Among the physicians currently seeing patients at this location is Mazen A. Abboud, DPM. Dr. Abboud, a Board-certified podiatrist, specializes in a broad spectrum of foot care for children and adults, from minor treatments for warts and ingrown toenails to major surgeries that save feet and amputations that save lives. As a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), Dr. Abboud is a medical doctor who received extensive education and training focused on the lower extremities of the body. “I spent the second half of medical school learning about the lower half of the human anatomy,” he says. “I like podiatry because there are so many aspects of it. It gives me the opportunity to do something different each day.” For example, his busy schedule involves treating patients in Wesley Chapel on Mondays and in Zephyrhills on Tuesdays and Thursdays, performing elective surgeries on Wednesdays and treating wounds on Fridays. His patients have sports injuries, foot and ankle fractures, complications from diabetes, neuropathies, wounds and club foot deformities, in addition to common problems such as bunions and hammer toes. The excitement he finds in this field is what he found lacking in dentistry. “I started out at NYU (New York University) College of Dentistry and after a year-and-a-half, I decided I
14
couldn’t spend my life working on teeth every day.” His brothers, both podiatrists, advised him to join their profession, which led him to attend the School of Podiatric Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia. There, he earned his DPM degree and completed his podiatric surgical residency at Tenet Roxborough Memorial Hospital. Dr. Abboud received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Boston, a city where he says he probably would be living today if his wife hadn’t been drawn to Florida. “My wife Joanne had relatives living in Clearwater and Dunedin and wanted to move to Florida,” he explains. “That’s why I decided to start my practice here.” He began practicing medicine in South Tampa in 2006 but quickly identified a need for podiatric physicians in Zephyrhills, where he eventually anchored his practice. Dr. Abboud currently has hospital privileges at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills and Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City, but also performs surgery at the New Tampa Surgery Center in Wesley Chapel. When the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel opens, he will be affiliated with that facility as well. Dr. Abboud lives in New Tampa’s Pebble Creek community with his wife and four children, ages 2 to 9. He says one of his biggest admonitions to his own kids regarding their feet involves wearing shoes. “I am always telling them not to walk around barefooted,” he comments. “That is one of the best things you can do to protect your feet.” He also emphasizes the need for pedal hygiene, explaining that if your feet perspire excessively, it’s important to put powder on them to prevent fungal infections. It’s also key to trim your nails routinely and keep your feet clean. If that sounds like common sense, it is, but that doesn’t mean people practice good habits. Take, for instance, folks
who mow their lawns or do other yard work while wearing flip flops. He says he often sees injuries that result from people simply using poor judgment. Another tip from Dr. Abboud for which your feet will thank you: Invest in high-quality shoes. Feet need support. After all, with every step, they carry the weight of your whole body. He finds that many shoes on the market for children and adults offer little or no support and often aren’t made of breathable material, another component to look for when shoe shopping. “Poor gait is one of the biggest problems we see,“ Dr. Abboud says. “Wearing better quality shoes will provide support and improve your gait.” Diabetes patients frequently require the care of a podiatrist, and Dr. Abboud sees quite a few patients with the disease. He advises patients with diabetes to control their sugar; inspect their feet daily and practice good pedal hygiene; wear white socks to easily spot blood; wear shoes when outside; and never wear flip flops. Sports injuries are another specialty of Dr. Abboud’s practice and he often treats tendon tears and stress fractures. He advises runners to replace their shoes regularly — choosing athletic shoes manufactured by companies such as New Balance or Nike (there is
Dr. Mazen Abboud, DPM at least one major brand he does NOT recommend, however; call to find out which one) — and he advocates stretching exercises before any sportsrelated activity. If you find yourself experiencing foot or ankle pain that persists for a period of 10 days to two weeks, Dr. Abboud recommends making an appointment to get the problem checked out. Assuming the pain will go away and continuing to put pressure on the foot will exacerbate the problem and may lead to chronic pain. It’s possible your condition may only require stretching exercises, orthotics or a new pair of shoes. To make an appointment or learn more about Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Orthopaedic and Spine Institute, call 782-1200 or visit MgTB.com. The Medical Group of Tampa Bay is located at 27416 Cashford Cir.

From Weight Loss To Skin Care, Look Your Best At Bella MedSpa! By Gary Nager When I was in my 30s and 40s, the only “cosmetic procedure” I would even consider having was a laser removal of a strawberry birthmark on my left cheek. But now, in my early 50s, I have to admit that there are a lot of procedures available at the new Bella MedSpa, located next to Nutrition S’Mart on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. (just south of S.R. 56 and the Shops at Wiregrass mall), that I would be happy to check out (and many more services that I probably wouldn’t). After all, even though people tell me I look younger than my age a lot, who wouldn’t want to have better skin, a flatter stomach, no love handles, more energy, or simply look and feel more like (or even better than) they did in their 20s and 30s? I first visited the new Bella MedSpa during its recent Grand Opening and Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at the new location (the original Bella location, which opened in 2005, was in the Summergate Professional Park behind Sam's Club), hosted by Bella owners Yvette Suarez, M.D., and her husband and CEO David Singletary. It may have been the first time I

met Dr. Suarez and David, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t be the last time we’d chat. After all, the new Bella MedSpa is an immaculate, truly upscale, state-of-the art medical facility where you can “Achieve the essence of youth.” It is a onestop shop that lives up to its claim of being “the most comprehensive MedSpa in the Tampa Bay area,” offering the following services for men and women: MedSpa Services — Botox® Cosmetic / Dysport™, Juvederm® Injectable Filler, Restylane and Per(Left) The lobby at the beautiful, new Bella MedSpa location on Bruce B. There are many physicians in the Tampa Bay Area who offer non-surgical and surgical services but it is up to you to find the physician with whom you are comfortable. Dr Suarez always strives for natural looking results. Her skills and talent have led her to be the Regional Instructor for Restylane®, Perlane, and Dysport™. She will work with her patients to determine realistic expectations and the great results that are possible with Liposculpting. Dr. Suarez uses the revolutionary ultrasound or laser for lipo which includes Vaser® and Lipotherme®. With her vast experience and the results her patients obtain, Dr. Suarez has become the Regional Instructor to teach other physicians the skills for Lipo Body Sculpting.
So, What’s On The Menu? Despite my personal struggles with my weight, I still don’t believe I would ever consider liposuction or surgery. Now that I’m in my 50s, however, I told David and Dr. Suarez that I might consider a solid medical weight loss program in order to finally lose the last — and most difficult — 10-15 pounds I need to lose in order to look and feel my best. I already have high blood pressure and borderline high cholesterol and I know that losing more weight can help with those issues. David says, “We take weight loss
one step further with personalized service and weight loss programs supervised by Dr. Suarez and our licensed nutritionalists.” Even though I’ve never had an energy problem, I did also discuss the possibility of trying bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to replace the testosterone most men lose as they age, in order to be able to better sculpt my body. Dr. Suarez assured me that no matter how good I think I feel now, my energy will skyrocket and my workouts will produce even better results if I try the hormone therapy, which works just as well for women, too. I even talked about the possibility of trying Botox® to reduce the deep lines in my forehead, which David noted as the only feature I have right now that truly makes me look my age. “I’ve had lipo, different fillers and hormone therapy,” admits David, who is in his early 40s. “Most people who try these services only wish they had tried us sooner!” Bella MedSpa is located at 1821 BBD Blvd. and is open Monday-Fri day, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. For free consultations and more information, call 929-1500 or visit BellaTampa.com.
Bella MedSpa has beautiful, immaculate treatment rooms (left), but it is still first and foremost a medical facility, so a safe, clean, sterile environment is of the utmost importance to Dr. Suarez and her staff.

Infinite Edge Learning Center Can Help Make Every Student A Star Pupil By Sheryl Young Imagine, as a parent, receiving this this letter: “Dear Mrs. Smith, We’re pleased to announce that your child has achieved a perfect score on his/her Scholastic Aptitude Test, and is now actually performing above his/her grade level in all subjects.” At Infinite Edge Learning Center, Inc., in Tampa Palms, this dream can become a reality. Sohbat (“Sobi”) Jabbari, M.A., M.S., and his wife Ozra have created a learning sanctuary to help students improve their schoolwork and knowledge of subjects at all levels. This improvement, in turn, contributes to higher self-confidence, the students’ ability to enjoy their scholastic years and be empowered for life. Through individualized and group tutoring sessions outside of school hours, Jabbari and his staff of outstanding teachers help pupils in various stages of school with math, language, reading and science skills. He explains what sparked the idea to start his extracurricular academy. “As a teacher for more than 28 years in upper education, including community college and at the university level in Tampa, I felt that many students were lacking the proficiency they
18
should attain before passing on to these upper grades.” During those years, he estimated that 90 percent of students lacked the proper foundation to go on to higher education. “I saw a need in the New Tampa/ Wesley Chapel area and surrounding communities for personalized help, and wanted to share my skills. ” The program at Infinite Edge includes: • Determining each student’s academic strengths and challenges via an entry assessment test. • Designing individualized coursework for every student that addresses their weaknesses. • Continuously assessing students’ progress before moving on to another concept. This maximizes achievement, retention and comprehension of academic knowledge. This is developed in the following areas from kindergarten through twelfth grade: Mathematics: Elementary (K-5) and Middle School (6-8), Pre-Algebra, High School Math (9-12), Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus. Language Development and Enrichment: Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Vocabulary, Sentence and Para-
graph Structure, Essay Development. Reading: Elementary, Middle School, High School Reading, Phonics, Fluency, Comprehension, Critical and Abstract Thinking. Science: General Science, Chemistry, Physics. Sobi’s wife, Ozra, is Infinite Edge’s office manager. “We’ve been open four and a half years now,” she says. “We have so many wonderful testimonials from students who have improved in their work.” One such testimonial comes from Nila Patel, the mother of Maya, who is in Sobi & Ozra Jabbari welcome students from all eighth grade. over Wesley Chapel and New Tampa to the Infi“Maya had problems in nite Edge Learning Center in Tampa Palms. math,” Patel explains. “After about a year at Infinite, her ing from former Infinite Edge student technique and confidence have Zach Mullen, now a freshman at New improved and she’s not afraid of math York University in Manhattan, NY: anymore. The Home Of Perfect SATs! Infinite Edge has developed a reputation for helping students raise their scores to perfect and near-perfect levels in the PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and ACT (American College Testing) tests. To see how much help a student needs, they are asked to first complete an SAT diagnostic assessment test via the Internet. It is scored immediately and evaluated by three certified and experienced teachers in Reading, Writing and Math. Then, an individualized course of instruction for that particular student is developed. The course includes content review and instruction, test-taking tactics, extensive practice with tutors, free online practice with unlimited hours, and free full-length Saturday SAT/ACT practice. “My biggest reward is when students get accepted to universities like Harvard and Georgia Tech,” says Jabbari. “But, for example, Algebra I and II are most important to proceed to other math. Without understanding these, students simply can’t do well in higher education.” Thinking beyond the four-year col-
lege degree, the instructors at Infinite are even equipped to help students get into medical school, by offering training toward the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). One-on-one tutoring at the Infinite Edge Learning Center starts at $40 and every class is one hour long. Group classes begin at $20. College entrance exam classes begin at $50. Home-schooled students and those involved in distance-learning also are invited to use Infinite Edge as a way to get extra, personalized education. Many more details about the courses offered at Infinite Edge are available at the company’s website, Infinite Edge Learning Center is located in the Tampa Palms Professional Center at 17419 Bridge Hill Ct. WRH Students Mourn Former Coach Chris Bounnell’s Passing By Sean Bowes The students and staff at Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) are still in shock over the unexpected death of Chris Bounnell, a popular sports coach and science teacher who touched the lives of many of his students. A crisis intervention team has been made available to provide counseling to any students or teachers at the school to help cope with their loss. Typically, the first week of school is pleasant for students — they get lost while looking for their new classes, they show off the latest “back to school” clothes and they spend time catching up with old friends. But, on August 22, after the second day of classes, Bounnell, 54, died of a heart attack that occurred while he was playing a pick-up game of soccer with a group of students at WRH, an after-school activity he had enjoyed since he began teaching at the school in 2006. It was reported that paramedics arrived shortly after Bounnell collapsed and he died either on the way to or at the hospital. Bounnell coached boys soccer and weightlifting at WRH, although he previously coached football at Zephyrhills High, where he first became a Pasco County science teacher in 1991. He
20
was one of the founding staff members when WRH opened five years ago. “He was a fantastic teacher,” said Pasco County School District (PCSD) spokesperson Summer Romagnoli “We are grateful that he graced our school with his smile and fervent passion to help students succeed… He is sorely missed, as he made a profound impact on the lives of the students he served.” Hector Rosario, a former student of Bounnell’s at WRH, wrote, “I remember freshman year I walked by the weight room after school and the first thing he said to me was, ‘Hey you! You should be in here workin’ out so you can be big and strong like me!’ From that day on, I lifted weights with him until I graduated this past year.” Speaking of weightlifting, Zephyrhills High alumnus Drew Barthle said, “Coach taught me everything I know about lifting weights. When I first maxed out freshman year at 85 pounds on the bench, he told me ‘Don’t worry about it we’ll take care of that. He worked on me for four years in the weight room and after school playing soccer. He was such a passionate and caring person who taught me so much. Every time I lift, I still picture him correcting and coaching me. He changed my life.”
A funeral service for Bounnell was held at First Baptist Church of Zephyrhills, where students, family and friends came to say a final “farewell” to the dedicated teacher known for his great sense of humor. Online memorials also have been made, including a “R.I.P. Coach Bounnell” Facebook page, which has hundreds of followers, and another page where many students are writing about how funny he could be during class. He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Sydney; parents, Harry and Bonnie; sisters, Sherry Bounnell and
Holly Redpath; and grandmother, Louise Stewart. Sydney, who started attending WRH as a freshman this school year, now has a college fund set Chris Bounnell up at the SunTrust Bank Seven Oaks Branch, where the Bounnell family asked for donations in lieu of flowers for Bounnell for his memorial service. At our press time, donations were still being accepted for Sydney’s college fund.

WCH Opens 2-0 In Football There have been only a handful of games so far in the high school football season, but it looks as if anything can still happen to our two local high school football teams, Wesley Chapel High (WCH) and Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH). To date, WCH has yet to lose a game and WRH has yet to win one, so it will be interesting to see which team can break its streak first. The season started on September 2, when the WCH Wildcats took charge in their first game against their local rivals, the WRH Bulls. WCH senior quarterback Keegan Tannerthrew for 154 and added an impressive 102 yards rushing. In the end, WRH was beaten 20-6 in its home opener. Since then, the ‘Cats have beaten St. Petersburg Catholic 26-14, as Tanner threw for nearly 300 yards and 2 TDs (including a screen pass to RB Sasha Mentor that went for 80 yards). Tanner’s brother Ty, WCH’s punter, threw for another score on a fake punt. WCH coach Ben Alford says he feels confident that the team can keep its momentum into its upcoming Class 5A, District 6 games. “We’re 2-0 (the ‘Cats had a Week 3 bye), so things are going good…really good,” said Alford. “We’re not going to change the way we’re playing. We’re

going to play fast and smart.” WCH will get a big test in Game 4 at unbeaten Pasco on October 7. Meanwhile, WRH has failed to score in its next two games, 36-0 to Sunlake High in Land O’Lakes and 530 to Pasco, to fall to 0-3, although the Bulls had yet to play a District 7A-7 game at our press time. Upcoming Wesley Chapel High Home Schedule: October 14 vs. Ridgewood & October 20 vs. Hudson Upcoming Wiregrass Ranch High Home Schedule: September 23 vs. Gaither, October 21 vs. Chamberlain & October 28 vs. Steinbrenner. — Sean Bowes.
Heritage Ford To Help WCH Football Depending upon how many people come out to test drive cars from the new Ford lineup — including the Focus, Fiesta, Explorer, The Edge and the F150 truck — the Wesley Chapel High (WCH) varsity and JV football teams could earn up to $8,000 in donations. Heritage Ford and The Ford Motor Company will host a “Drive One 4 Ur School Event” on Thursday, October 20, 3 p.m.-8 p.m., at Wesley Chapel High. Ford will donate $20 up to $6,000 to the WCH football program for every person who test drives a car at the school. Additionally, Ford will donate up to an extra $2,000 for people who test drive the newly designed Ford Focus. WCH coach Ben Alford says that the football teams could definetly use the extra money “We are up from 80 players last year to 100 this year,” said Alford. “We don’t even enough helmets for all of our players.” According to Heritage Ford spokesperson Jennifer Cofini, the event is being held at WCH because of the on-going construction on S.R. 54 outside the dealership. During the five-hour event, there also will be giveaways for everyone who
test drives a vehicle and all participants also will be entered into a raffle to win a $100 gift card to Best Buy. “If we get 300 people to come out and test drive a car, that’s at least $6,000 we have for new equipment,” said Alford. To test drive a car, the participant must be at least 18-years-old and have a valid driver’s license. The “Drive One 4 Ur School Event” is taking place on the day of the WCH vs. Hudson High football game, which is a “Breast Cancer Awareness Game” that starts at 7:30. WCH will wear pink decals on their helmets for the game. There also will be “Trick or Treating” around the track for the little ones before the game (starting at 6:30 p.m.). Wesley Chapel High is located at 30651 Wells Rd., while Heritage Ford is located at 28739 S.R. 54. For more information, you can call Jennifer Cofini at 907-7800. — SB

Neighborhood Nibbles — Quail Hollow CC & Mexican On The Move! By Gary Nager
The New Quail Hollow CC Lounge Is A Must-Tr y!
Just because I can’t yet tell you what kind of cuisine is the top specialty at the newly renovated Restaurant & Lounge at Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club (QHGCC), that doesn’t mean the food isn’t awesome (it is) The grilled romaine heart chicken Caesar or the place isn’t beautiful and classy. at Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club is (Yes, Quail Hollow! Authentic Mexican Cuisine!
Jalapeno Mexican Grille, which opened recently in the space previously occupied first by the Louis Pappas Market Cafe and more recently by Joy of Tokyo in the Oak Ramble Plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., south of Tampa Palms, is a casual, but elegant restaurant featuring truly authentic (and delicious) Mexican cuisine. Owner/chef Miguel Espinosa and his wife, Dawn Boyer, opened Jalapeno only a couple of months after Joy of Tokyo closed, due to the death of its owner (which we reported previously). The place is lovely, the food is delicious and the price is right at Jalapeno. Jalapeno is open every day for lunch and dinner. Stop in at 19493 Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., call 977-0800 or visit JalapenoTampa.com.
Here & There, This & That
Machismo, the Southwesternstyle, build-your-own burrito bar that previously was located in the same Oak Ramble Plaza as Jalapeno, has reopened in the Palms Connection on E. Bearss Ave., just west of BBD. Machismo still features fresh, huge, create-your-own burritos and salad bowls, nachos, tacos and quesadillas and more than 30 different hot sauces
at its hot sauce bar, but now also has ice cold Mexican and other imported and domestic beers. Machismo Burrito Bar is located at 2808 E. Bearss Ave., next to Big Papa’s Pit. Call 977-9796 or visit MachismoBurritoBar.com. The newest Tijuana Flats (17501 Preserve Walk Lane) opened in August in the space previously occupied by Shane's Rib Shack, next to Verizon Wireless, in Highwoods Preserve off BBD at Dona Michelle Dr. Call 9750483 or visit TijuanaFlats.com. Cole’s BBQ, which previously was located in the Shoppes at The Pointe plaza in Tampa Palms, has re-opened in the space formerly occupied by Jimmy Z’s BBQ in the Cross Creek Plaza at 10861 Cross Creek Blvd., less than a mile west of Morris Bridge Rd. Owner/chef Bradley Cole and his wife Tracy invite you to visit Coles’ spacious new location or call 986-9500 for more info. The old Wasabi Japanese Steak & Sushi at 19601 BBD in front of the Pebble Creek Collection is now the new Kobe Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, part of a small chain of 11 Japanese steakhouses in Florida, including one on N. Dale Mabry Hwy.. Call 994-6697 or visit KobeSteakhouse.com for info.
