that has made our country great. We have all heard that leadership starts at the top. The President of the U.S. has an important role in setting a direction for the nation. I believe that our country needs a change of course. For this reason, I have taken an active role in support of Mitt Romney for President. Mitt Romney still believes in the promise of America. As the former Governor of Massachusetts, a traditionally liberal state, he has a proven record of results. In just one term, Gov. Romney turned around a state that was mired in fiscal and economic problems. When he came into office in 2002, Massachusetts was shedding jobs and running a deficit. By the time he left office in 2006, he had balanced the budget, cut taxes 19 times, and generated enough new revenue to create a surplus of $2 billion for a rainy-

America, once widely considered the “shining city on a hill,” is now struggling under the weight of excessive spending, an extended recession and an uncertain future. This has led some to say that America’s best days are behind us: those critics are wrong. The desire for and pursuit of freedom is still alive and well. Yet, many of our government’s policies are stifling the very spirit

The Increasing Web Presence Of The Neighborhood News! Like so many industries during our nation’s ongoing economic downturn, the newspaper/magazine publishing business in this country is not in great shape. Long-standing daily newspapers and many renowned magazines around the country have been going out of business at an alarming rate the last couple of years, as those that are still around try to find ways to give their readers the news they can and already do find 24/7 on the internet without cannibalizing themselves, because fewer and fewer businesses are buying daily newspaper advertising. Can any print medium survive the onslaught of instant news and information available on the web? Well, publishing industry insiders still believe that “niche” publications, like the New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News, are those that can survive and even thrive in the face of the ongoing problems in the publishing business. Why? Well, in our case, this 18years-young news magazine is still the only all-direct-mail print medium that actually covers the news of New Tampa, and whose editorial content isn’t entirely “advertorial” in nature. And, while both local dailies still offer sections that cover the news of New Tampa, those sections still also cover the news of areas (Temple Terrace, Carrollwood, etc.) that simply aren’t as important to the residents of the communities we serve. But, with new publications still tryWesley Chapel Neighborhood News 15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa, FL 33647 Phone: (813) 910-2575 Fax: 910-2483 Website: WCNeighborhoodNews.com Adv. An editorial by Gary Nager ing to break into this market all the time and the web becoming more and more important to most potential advertisers, the fact is that we know that we can illafford to try to rest on our laurels as the only true news medium in New Tampa. To that end, our marketing director Ashley Knoblach, who also owns her own web and social media business called A2 Marketing Group, has totally updated and revamped not only our website (making it much more userfriendly and interactive), but also our email blasts, Facebook updates and more. I know that no matter how much some people still love to read a newspaper or magazine by holding it in their hands, an ever-increasing number of people, especially those under age 40, get their news and information whenever they want it, from the web. That means, unless we want the tide to roll past us, we HAVE to properly integrate the world wide web into what we do. Although some of the new features I plan to incorporate into our website haven’t yet been rolled out, in the future, you can look for convenient, easy-to-use on-line versions of our exclusive Guide to Area Businesses in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel and our equally exclusive Dining Guide, which will include not only restaurants located in our distribution areas, but also pictures and reviews of my favorite out-of-our-area eateries. Senior news writer Sean Bowes also has just rolled out a “New Tampa & Wesley Chapel News Item of the Day,” which can be anything from the latest road news to updates of stories that appeared in our most recent issue to Chamber of Commerce and charitable functions or even a preview of sports matches pitting Wharton vs. Freedom, etc. As you’re receiving this, the first week of daily news updates should be up and running, so you’ll want to start
checking for those news items every day, so you’re not missing out on anything happening in and around our area. If you log on now, you also will get to read about a week’s worth of “Gary’s Neighborhood Blog” entries (where you’ll find everything from dining to sports to TV to...gulp...politics), some of which will be expanded upon in our upcoming printed issues. My goal is to make our website the perfect companion to the print version, not to replace it in any way. We already offer on-line archives of our recent issues and Sean has had some story updates and breaking news items that
have appeared on our site before making it into print. In our next issue, Ashley and I also will roll out our first-ever print and online combo promotion of a shopping center, which we will start with our own Shoppes of Amberly plaza. In other words, instead of ignoring the web, we’re embracing it, with unique advertising, marketing and READING opportunities we guarantee you won’t find anywhere else. Raymond James Financial Expanding Into Wiregrass Ranch At S.R. 56 By Sean Bowes Regardless of how the economy will be doing in other parts of the county in the next few years, there will likely be hundreds of new jobs in Wesley Chapel after 2014. On October 4, the Pasco County Commission approved an incentive package for Raymond James Financial, a well-known investment and financial planning company that will be creating its latest campus in Wiregrass Ranch. The multi-million dollar incentive package will include $10 million from the Pasco County budget as well as an additional $5 million from the state. The money will be used on road improvements such as the completion of Wiregrass Ranch Blvd., an extension of Mansfield Blvd. (where Wiregrass Ranch High is located) and will eventually connect S.R. 54 to S.R. 56. The incentive package also includes tax breaks for Raymond James Financial, which has set a tentative construction date of 2012, with occupancy of the first building expected as early as 2013. Raymond James Public Relations Manager Steve Hollister says that the details about the company's construction plans have not yet been finalized; however, it has been published that the

Raymond James campus will be comprised of two 100,000-sq.-ft. buildings. The company has said it plans to bring 750 jobs to the county by 2024, with at least 100 of those jobs beginning in 2014, although employees for Raymond James’ operations department will be hired in as little as two years. “The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) has put money aside each year to be able to attract the ‘big players’ (like Raymond James),” explained District 2 commissioner Pat Mulieri, whose district includes all of Wesley Chapel, including the planned Raymond James campus. “The money is allocated over a number of years. The incentive money also has been set aside to assist present established businesses to grow.” The BCC recently approved the latest budget of $1.1 billion on September 13, and although Mulieri says that for the incentive package for Raymond James Financial will come from the recently passed budget, it will be doled out over the next 10 to 15 years. Also, in order for Raymond James to collect from the package, the company must meet certain agreed-to benchmarks, such as breaking ground in 2012 and beginning to hire employees for the jobs at the campus by 2013. “The BCC has worked the past four

mond James is going to bring in a lot of business, and they bought 65-acres, so they have a lot of room to grow. With the support of my family and a great Board of County Commissioners, we are really getting things done.” In spite of tough economic times, the Wesley Chapel area continues to grow from its former rural background into a strong, modern day workhorse for businesses. The Shops of Wiregrass, the quick construction of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (which will be ready for patients less than one year from now), a new Pasco-Hernando Community College campus, along with the many businesses that have sprouted up in the area, make it apparent that Wesley Chapel is no longer just a “bedroom community” for Hillsborough County. And, Porter says there are still thousands of acres in Wiregrass that could potentially be developed for residents and/or businesses. “The Wesley Chapel area has become the economic engine for Pasco County,” Mulieri says, adding that the explosion of major businesses in the region are creating a, “synergy that will help stimulate the economy in Pasco County,” and surrounding areas such as New Tampa. According to Raymond James’ Hollister, the Wiregrass property is a great option for the company’s new campus. He says that the factors that
weighed in favor of Wiregrass Ranch instead of different options in Hillsborough County were its minimized natural disaster risk, access to major roadways, demographics, redundant power and fiber optics infrastructure, as well as the available incentives made possible by the county. “I believe that attracting a renowned company like Raymond James to Pasco will undoubtedly spur others to locate to our developing financial epicenter,” says District 61 State Rep. Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel) whose district includes all of Wesley Chapel. “This is what economic development is all about — this is the beginning of good things to come for Pasco County!” The Wiregrass deal concluded just after the St. Petersburg-based company was required to pay fines and restitution for, allegedly, overcharging some of its customers. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) recently fined Raymond James $425,000 and ordered it to pay $1.69 million in restitution to more than 15,000 customers for charging "unfair and unreasonable" commissions for their services. Brad Bennett, FINRA’s executive vice president, has said that the overcharges happened when the company “failed to adequately monitor its supervisory systems.”
“Romney”
Continued from page 1 environment. He didn’t make excuses; he made a difference. As a presidential candidate, Romney is right on the issues. Social Security is shaping up to be a central issue for voters, especially in Florida where we have the largest population of seniors. Gov. Romney recognizes that Social Security faces a severe financial shortfall, and he has developed well thought-out reforms to fix and strengthen the program so that we can keep our promises to both current seniors and to future generations. It’s a sensible, conservative plan, not a wrecking ball. Romney also has a very detailed program to turn around the economy. It’s probably the most thoughtful and far-reaching proposal ever put forward by a presidential candidate. It’s a 150page plan (along with 59 separate actions) to get the U.S. economy growing again and it includes tax reform, cutting federal spending and reorganizing the federal government. You can read the plan for yourself at MittRomney.com. I have two young daughters, and their future weighs heavily on my wife and me. I am deeply concerned about
the way our leaders in Washington, D.C., continue to push off difficult decisions at the expense of my children and your children. America’s spending cannot be sustained. It is not fair to bill the next generation for the excesses of politicians today. We need someone with the courage and conviction to stop making soft decisions, and instead put America’s needs first. Mitt Romney is that kind of leader. The upcoming election for our next President is a contest of great consequence. We have been given the privilege of making the choice to decide who will lead our nation. For me, that choice is Mitt Romney. I urge all Floridians to step off the sidelines and get involved in this very important election. I urge you to become a part of restoring the promise of America. Note-We invite you to respond to Rep. Weatherford’s endorsement column, whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, Liberal, Conservative, Libertarian or just have a different view on the Republican race. Please try to keep your columns to about the same length as this piece (less than 600 words) You can email them to NTNNedit@yahoo.com or post your responses to our website, WCNeighborhoodNews.com or to our Facebook page. - GN

Bruce B. Downs Widening May No Longer Be ‘Right On Track’ By Sean Bowes & Gary Nager With 400 days of heavy road construction already under New Tampa’s belt, the widening of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. south of the Pasco County line is supposed to be nearing the halfway point to the completion of its first phase — from Palm Springs Blvd. in Tampa Palms to Pebble Creek Dr. And, while some people in the community are starting to feel a bit antsy after dealing with the mangled blacktop for more than a year on the road on which they drive on every day, residents may have to suffer for a bit longer than they originally expected. Hillsborough County is planning to spend a total of $107 million on the three-phase project, which started on January 4, 2010, and will transform BBD, the main connector of New Tampa to Wesley Chapel, from the congested four-lane road as it sits today into a much needed eight-lane highway. The widening project is composed of four different construction segments which will keep construction workers busy until at least the middle of 2014. Currently, the project is still in Phase I, the widening of the 3.5-mile stretch from Palm Springs Blvd. to Pebble Creek Dr. (representing Hillsborough Segments B and C). That section has been scheduled to be completed within 1,000 days from the start of the project and be finished by late 2012. Unfortunately, the contractors for the first phase of the widening, Kamminga & Roodvoets, Inc., have recently submitted a request to the county for a 120-day extension to complete Phase I, says Scott Passmore, the project’s resident engineer.According to Passmore, the workers ran into some difficulties with the sewer and main water lines over the last few months, including a recent one that led to a boil water alert. “The underground water mains on the south end of I-75 were the originals from the 1970s,” explains Passmore. “Originally, they were planned to last
6
much longer, but when we got in there, we could see that the concrete cylinder pipe needed replacing. And, we ran into another setback with the dimensions of the fittings. You really don't know what you are going to find until you dig it up.” The other hurdle that the contractors ran into were the sewer lines near Commerce Palms Dr. in Tampa Palms and in Highwood Preserve. “Basically, the sewer mains were tested and we couldn’t guarantee that they could all be 100-percent closed from their pump stations,” Passmore says. “So, we had to install line-stops, which were not in the contract, at three or four different locations, to make sure we could close the mains.” Passmore says these unplanned utility problems are the reasons for submitting the change order a few weeks ago, which will be reviewed and decided on by the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners this month. At this time, the county hasn’t yet granted an extension for the contractor, and they will continue to shoot for the January 2013 deadline. Public Works department spokesperson Steve Valdez says that requests such as these are typical in many lengthy projects. Although county officials admit that the road doesn’t look too different on a day-to-day basis, Valdez is confident that the project has made some real progress, and that Phase I is roughly 40 percent completed. While Segments B and C are actually located in the middle of the four segments of the project, Hillsborough County spokesperson Steve Valdez says that the reason for starting construction there was because it is the most highly traveled section of BBD. “It was planned from the beginning to start widening that section first,” Valdez says. “Palm Springs Blvd. to Pebble Creek Dr. is the most traveled section of BBD.” According to a traffic projection from the county’s Public Works
Department, the traffic count on that central section of BBD is around 60,000 cars per day. A future projection by the department estimates that 70,000 cars could travel on that section of BBD by 2025. Having to replace these old, damaged water pipes on Bruce The next phase of B. Arnold & Parkinson — Wesley Chapel’s Cosmetic & Family Dentistry By Camille Gillies “MyFamilySmile.com.” It’s an appropriate website moniker for a dental practice that prides itself on treating patients as if they were family and making sure those in their care leave the dental chair with radiant, healthy smiles. This aptly named site belongs to Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry of Wesley Chapel, and creating a warm, caring environment is among the goals that the two dentists set out to achieve when they started their joint practice five years ago. Dentists Robert Parkinson, DMD, and Scott Arnold, DMD, FAGD, began their partnership in 2006 after being introduced by a fellow dental professional who thought they would make a winning team. The two University of Florida College of Dentistry graduates hit it off, joined forces and opened their first office together in Riverview. Seeing the growth potential in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, they expanded this year with a new office in the Cypress Glen Professional Park on Cypress Ridge Blvd. (off of S.R. 56, less than a mile from I-75). With 30 years of experience between them, both dentists share a philosophy of providing personalized

care, treating one patient at a time. If you’ve ever gone to a dentist and felt like a package lined up on an assembly line, you will surely appreciate the care and service you receive at this new practice. Dr. Parkinson insists that the assembly-line experience is exactly what you won't find at Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry. In fact, appointments are carefully scheduled to ensure individualized attention, and the dentists even give their patients their personal cell phone numbers. “Not only do we provide our patients with our cell numbers,” Dr. Parkinson says, “we also call our patients directly to check to see how they are doing (after a procedure).”
Advanced Training, Education & Technology Among the many general and cosmetic dental procedures performed by Drs. Arnold and Parkinson are everything from routine exams, cleanings and fillings to advanced cosmetic dentistry, root canal therapy and even dental implants. Both dentists are proud to have received advanced training from the prestigious Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies and they both focus on staying abreast of new techniques and technological advances,

The updated technology and equipment are expensive, but Dr. Parkinson says he and Dr. Arnold feel the investment is well worth it. “We believe in getting the best of the best,” he says. “We put our money into the best drills and equipment - things that will directly benefit our patients.” Both dentists also are certified in Invisalign orthodontic treatments, the innovative technology that straightens teeth without the bands, brackets or wires of traditional braces. Dr. Parkinson says, “If patients comply with the treatment, Invisalign technology can significantly reduce the time it takes to straighten the teeth and it's much less painful than braces.” He adds that part of the reason he and Dr. Arnold enjoy being dentists is the gratification they receive from relieving their patients’ pain. He says the whole team at Arnold & Parkinson strives to keep all procedures as painless as possible, from treating periodontal disease to restorations. Sami, a patient at the Wesley Chapel office, agrees: “I have always been terrified of going to the dentist, but Dr. Parkinson is extremely kind and thorough and made sure that I was comfortable throughout my treatment,” she says. “His staff always goes the extra mile to keep me calm and relaxed. They always explain every-
thing that they are doing and are extremely gentle. I have a lot of work to get done and I am so glad that I found Dr. Parkinson to complete it. I just completed my Invisalign treatment and I love my straightened smile. I've recommended him to several coworkers who have been pleased with his office as well.” Comments like those are not surprising to Dr. Parkinson. “People rave about the staff at both of our offices,” he says. “I’ll ask patients how they heard about us and they’ll say, ‘I read your reviews on Yahoo,’ or that they called five different dentists and the person they spoke to here was the nicest.” You can even make an appointment at Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry online, as well as download new patient forms to complete in the comfort of your home. It’s also easy to determine your insurance eligibility, as the numerous insurance carriers in the practice’s network are listed on the Arnold & Parkinson website. Visit MyFamilySmile.com or call 907-2228 to request an appointment or learn more about Arnold & Parkinson Dentistry. The practice's Wesley Chapel office is located at 26851 Tanic Dr., Suite 101, less than a half-mile north of S.R. 56.

Stay Cool With A Great Neighbor, Ierna’s Heating And Cooling By Camille Gillies If you had to rank the top 10 greatest inventions of the 20th century, would air conditioning be on your list? In Florida, we love our AC and if your cooling system has ever shut down in the middle of a sweltering summer heat wave, you realize just how much you depend on it. Opening the windows to 90-degree temperatures, 100percent humidity and buzzing insects would mean sweaty, sleepless nights for most of us. Enter the team of experts at Ierna’s Heating and Cooling, a familyrun business that has been keeping homeowners and businesses in our area comfortable for more than eight years. Opened by Ron and Charlene Ierna, the hometown company they started in a spare bedroom of their Lutz home in 2003 now has 35 full-time employees based out of their office on 19121 U.S. Hwy. 41 (between Sunset Rd. and S.R. 54) in Lutz, and soon will move to a new, larger location across U.S. 41 next to the Old Lutz Schoolhouse, in a remodeled building that formerly housed the Lutz Bank. For such a relatively short existence, Ierna’s has racked up an impres-

sive trophy collection. In the past five years Ierna’s Heating and Cooling has been named Central Pasco Chamber Business of the Year, the Wesley Chapel Chamber’s Small Business of the Year, Best Air Conditioning Company in Lutz by the U.S. Local Business Association and the Florida Bryant Air Conditioning Dealer of the Year. Much of this success is attributable to the vision and fortitude of Ron and Charlene. In fact, Charlene, who serves as the company’s vice president, two years ago was recognized as a finalist in the entrepreneur category of the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Businesswoman of the Year honors. Her winning, common-sense business philosophy revolves around keeping the company’s customers, employees and the community happy. With more than 18,000 residential and commercial customers in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties, Ierna’s approach to service and repair is a no-pressure attitude. “When a diagnosis is reached, we will give you your options and a flat rate cost of the repairs,” says Ron, the company’s president. “If your system is old, inefficient and/or in disrepair, we will educate (you) about the current

In addition to repairing and maintaining existing heating and cooling sys-
tems, the company also sells and installs new systems and offers air purification systems and duct services. All services are performed by crews of experienced technicians whose dedication and professionalism are valued by the Iernas and their customers alike. Local resident Christine Garmeson Wisser recounts that her former airconditioning contractor told her she needed a new $6,800 unit without ever inspecting her current system. Posting her comments online, she writes, “Luis Santiago from Ierna’s came to give a

(free) second opinion, changed a capacitor, and I have AC again! I now have a service contract with Ierna for the next three years. Great job!” Homeowner Leigh Grundy feels confident enough in the company’s technicians to offer them access to her home in her absence. “I have literally opened my house up for Ierna’s techs to come out when our AC was not working and I could not be at the house,” she writes. “They respond quickly and are honest! I have recommended Ierna’s to all of my family members in the area.” Several customers have gone out of their way to mention technicians by name. Bridget Verrecchia expressed relief over getting a long-standing cooling problem resolved at her home, stating, “I sincerely thank you for fixing our AC problem and for providing friendly, trustworthy technicians. Victor, Don and James all should be recognized for their great service and professionalism!” Charlene prizes the hard work and the “do whatever it takes“ attitude of her employees to provide Ierna’s customers with the highest quality service and products. “I personally make it mandatory that every employee understands the importance and appreciates the value of
cultivating each and every customer,” she says. “From a personal follow-up call to sending out thank-you notes to committing ourselves to a 100-percent satisfaction guarantee policy, the goal is to foster relationships with our customers that will last for years to come.”
A Proud History Of Community Service The company’s commitment to the community doesn’t end there. Just ask the plethora of schools, civic groups and nonprofit organizations that have benefited from the Iernas’ benevolence. From donating $15,000 to sponsor the Florida Aquarium’s Penguin Promenade to outfitting the Land O’Lakes Recreation Center with a new $5,000 utility vehicle to sponsoring fund-raising events for the Oasis Crisis Pregnancy Center to backing golf tournaments to supporting the troops, the list of Ierna’s philanthropic activities goes on and on. Whether it’s little league or varsity sports teams, the Wesley Chapel Chamber, Lowry Park Zoo or Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Charlene and Ron are committed to the community in which they were raised. They still live in Lutz, where they are raising their three young children, but their support for all of the communities they
serve is evident in everything they do. “This business has been successful because of the sheer determination of two people who truly believe that to be successful you must build a trusting relationship with your customers as well as your community,” Charlene explains. And, they share that commitment with their happy employees. The Iernas believe in rewarding their employees and have done so in the past by taking their staff on all-expenses-paid company cruises. Employee appreciation trips have included jaunts to the Bahamas and Mexico. For a couple who eight years ago began their pursuit of the American
dream with only a home office the size of a closet, a few credit cards and a tenacious spirit, the Ron and Charlene Ierna are reaping the fruits of their labors, continuing to expand their business and embrace the community despite difficult economic times. But, Charlene is quick to point out the true foundation of their success, insisting, “In the air-conditioning world, success is not about the products we offer and it’s not about my company. It’s clearly and undeniably about our customers.” For more information about Ierna’s Heating & Cooling, call 9486355 or visit IernaAir.com.

Excel Music: The Art Of Teaching Students One Note At A Time By Alicia Pack For some, the dream of living a musician’s life is just that — a dream. For students at Excel Music in New Tampa (just a few miles from Wesley Chapel), however, those dreams can become reality while learning under those who already have lived that glamorous life. John Thrasher and his wife Sheri have both been successful touring musicians. The duo was on tour for 25 years and traveled from Canada to Japan, with their band, “Spiral Staircase,” as well as with country music legend Mickey Gillie. The couple has performed for audiences of up to 100,000 and even played at the White House. Despite their love of touring, the Thrashers ultimately decided it was time to find a permanent home. “As much as we enjoyed performing, we thought it would be nice to put down roots and do something that feels good and helps others. If just one student got to live their life the way we did, then it would be worth it,” Thrasher said. While still in Japan and with a little help from a book, having family in the area and the easy access to stu-

dents and superb teachers, the Thrashers chose New Tampa as the place to live and to start a music school. Since Excel Music’s sole focus is on education, the Thrashers are able to hire teachers who really love what they do. “We draw teachers who are really interested in music,” says John. “Our teachers are well credentialed people who are really good to our students.” In fact, six teachers at Excel Music have been with the school from the start in 2006 and several others have taught there for three and four years. All of the teachers at Excel are music lovers and enthusiasts, who are university trained and many have Master’s degrees. “My sons really enjoyed learning under the leadership of the instructors,” says Lori Bleckley, whose three sons have been taking guitar lessons at Excel for more than three years. “They really like the challenge of learning a new instrument.” Excel Music provides lessons for students from ages four and up on almost any instrument with all skill levels and disciplines. While the school does teach many beginners, even experienced college students and professional musicians s can come in and
receive a little tuning-up help. Many adults take lessons at Excel in order to pursue the lifelong dream of learning an instrument, including one man who was 86 years old when he started taking trumpet lessons after his doctor told him he needed to do something to improve his wind. John says the most popular classes are piano, voice and guitar, but the school offers lessons for a wide variety of instruments, including the bassoon. Two exciting new classes added this year are a rock band and a “Glee” group. The rock band will consist of six students and the “Glee” groups can have up to 12 students who will be performing songs from many different genres. According to Thrasher, students really enjoy performing in groups. “Having group classes is important because the students can learn from each other,” he says. Learning to play an instrument isn’t the only thing that students are taught at Excel Music. The instructors also focus on the fundamentals of music, which include learning to read music, music theory and even music history. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis and teachers inspire students to practice outside the classroom.
Instructor Brandon Bair of Excel Music on Cross Creek Blvd. can teach you or your child to play the bassoon. “Hearing music in the house is a really nice element in the house,” Bleckley says. “It brings us together as a family without using the TV.” Excel Music has partnered with Music & Arts, a nationwide band and orchestra instrument rental company, in order for students to have the ability to rent their instruments without the costs incurred from buying the instrument. This is especially important for young violin students who outgrow their instruments. Students can trade in instruments that are too small or try a new instrument without buying it. Instruments can be delivered to Excel Music, the student’s

school or even their house. Many Excel Music students will be showcasing their talents at a recital on Sunday, December 11, at the University of South Florida. The recitals usually consist of about 100 students singing and playing various instruments, and new this year will be performances by the rock band and “Glee” groups. “I’ve been impressed that the instructors have motivated my sons to be on stage at USF, both playing guitar and singing,” Bleckley says. “They would never have done that on their own. It is a fantastic self-esteem-building experience to perform on stage.”
Proper instruction is the key at Excel! Excel Music is located in the Cory Lake Isles Professional Center at 10353 Cross Creek Blvd., Ste. I. Hours are Mon. - Thurs., 2 p.m.-9 p.m., 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Friday and 10am-3p.m. on Saturdays 10am3p.m. And closed on Sunday. For more information, visit ExcelMusic.us or call 991-1177.

‘Gearheads’ Polish Their Mechanical Skills At Wesley Chapel High By Sean Bowes More than one hundred students at Wesley Chapel High (WCH) are turning their hobbies of tinkering in the garage and turning wrenches into the possibility of a career in the automotive field. The Academy of Automotive Services at WCH is a fairly new program, as it started at the school just three years ago, but it wasn’t until Jason Hallman, a tattooed motorcycle fanatic from the “Motor City” of Detroit, MI., became the teacher of the course and put the “horsepower back in high school.” Before Hallman’s arrival a year ago, the course was mainly focused on bookwork and was only available as a onehour elective class. Now, students who are serious about working on cars have the opportunity to take two class periods of “Auto Block” every day. Hallman says that the feedback from his students has been tremendous. During the summer he was receiving text messages and Saturday night phone calls from students who had questions about cars they were working on over the break. According to Hallman, the students are not just getting the hands onexperience by working on different

makes and models of cars every day. The auto-tech course counts as one year of experience for students who are interested in becoming certified for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), an accreditation for mechanics that is recognized internationally, which requires two-years of in-shop experience before taking the exam. “It’s not just for the kids that want to get the ASE,” says Hallman. “All of the guys in the program are going to be someone’s neighbor one day and they’re going to be able to lend a hand.when someone needs their help with something.” Actually, many of the students already are doing that. Around a small car port in the WCH parking lot, about 15 students are draining oil, taking off brake rotors and checking the on-board diagnostics of different “project vehicles,” which include not only their personal project cars, but also a teacher's Nissan truck, a guidance counselor’s Honda Accord and, believe it or not, principal Carin Nettles’ Volkswagen, which was due for its 40,000- mile tune up. “All the lights in my car started blinking and I thought I could smell something burning on the way to school,” says Patti Taylor, a guidance
counselor at WCH who dropped off her car that morning. “I was in 'panic mode. I was going to take it to the dealership until I remembered about the auto shop (program). If it’s broke, they can fix it.” Later this year, construction will begin on WCH’s new, state-of-the-art, Instructor Jason Hallman (left) makes sure his young mechanics automotive acad- in Wesley Chapel High’s Academy of Automotive Services learn emy building. how to recognize and repair almost any autotomotive issue. loans. Mechanics, on the other hand, have a starting salary of around $32,000, and students in the auto shop program are already getting the experience they need before stepping into the workforce. Hallman says that the program is made possible, partly, with the support of the program’s Auto Advisory Board, members of which have donated tools, parts and even engines to the class, as well as hired former students in the program to work in the automotive field. Wiregrass Ranch Volleyball Squeaks Past Wesley Chapel High By Sean Bowes Given the fact that Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) and Wesley Chapel High (WCH), the only two high schools in Wesley Chapel, have such a close proximity to each other (around 8 miles), one may think that their volleyball teams would have a bigger rivalry than they actually do. But, on October 13 at Wesley Chapel High, the match between the Lady Bulls, who are ranked #322 in Florida and Wildcats, ranked 403rd, had no ugly words or fights or blood
shed; instead it was just a competitive game of volleyball between two groups of girls, many of whom are friends off the court, as well. In the end, it was teamwork that led WRH to the 3-2 victory over WCH. “We play great together,” WRH Mindy Kantor said. “Everyone does their part even though we're a very young team.” Out of the ten players on WRH's varsity team, 7 of them are sophomores. The team also has struggled since an upsetting injury earlier this season when Brittany Jack, a prominent center for
the Bulls, tore her ACL and meniscus. Kantor said she is looking forward to the upcoming seasons as her young team gets some much-needed experience this year. WRH, who play in Class 7A, District 9, are 12-11 this season (2-2 in their district) while the Wildcats, of District 5A-8, are 4-11 (2-4 in their district). WRH is led by center Tori Quaglai, who leads the team in kills with 128, outside hitters Teddi Wright (who has 323 assists) and Grace Olsen (318 digs) and middle hitter Kaitlyn
Diehl (56 kills). The Wildcats started off solid, with some great spikes by senior center Sakari Worrels, who fires impressive “laser beams” when she makes contact with the ball. Unfortunately, Worrels’ power wasn't enough to tame the Bulls, and despite a strong start, the Wildcats fell apart towards the end of the match. “I’m very proud of all the girls,” said WCH coach Shana Sanders. “But we’ve had a rocky season, and have had trouble pulling together to play as a team.”

New Tampa Brother & Sister Win Gold Medals In South Korea By Sean Bowes Ask any parent with a son and a daughter and they will likely tell you that it’s difficult to get their kids to stop fighting. New Tampa residents Christopher and Viviana Cao are no exception. However, their kids — Christopher, 14, and Viviana, 11 — are not exactly fighting in the way you might think, like, say, over the remote control. Instead, they practice sparring, breaking boards and perfecting their moves in Tae Kwon Do (TKD), the Korean martial art form. Recently, the young duo traveled to Namyangju, South Korea, to represent the U.S., and both won gold medals at the World Tae Kwon Do Hanmadang, an annual competition which is open to elite TKD athletes. At the Hanmadang, 3,700 TKD practitioners from 53 different countries competed against each other in a variety of poomsae (see below) and boardbreaking events. Poomsae is a choreographed sequence of techniques that is performed either with or without the use of a weapon. Christopher and Viviana competed together in the Junior II (ages 13-15) Pair Poomsae (forms)

Finally! A Visit To The Wolf’s Den—Wesley Chapel’s Neighborhood Diner! By Gary Nager When the Wolf’s Den Restaurant first opened on S.R. 56 back in 2008, I sat down with owner and Wesley Chapel resident Roger Wolf to discuss what his plans for the place were and whether or not we could help him with a story and some advertising. Downs (BBD) Blvd. closed a couple of months ago, there’s a great place conveniently located on S.R. 54 just a few miles to the east (and just east of Morris Bridge Rd.) that you should visit. It’s called Jump-In Inflatable Party Center and, while the 4,500-sq.-ft. place isn’t fancy, it is immaculately clean, the kids who visit seem to have a blast and the folks who own and operate it understand that in today’s economy, parents need to find fun places where they can entertain their kids without breaking the bank. Jump-In owner Jason Ladd and his wife (and charter school teacher) Kim and their three kids live in Dade City and Jason has been in the inflatablesfor-hire business for eight years, although this indoor facility, his first, has only been open about two months as you’re reading this article. He still has a roster of 65 outdoor inflatables for rent, access to many more and he keeps five different play areas available at Jump-In for kids ages 3 to around 10, although he says that some middle school-aged kids (mainly ages 11-12) still really enjoy the inflatables, too. Jason accommodates the older kids separately from the “young’ns,” with Middle School Nights every Friday (7 p.m.-10 p.m.) and some elementary school-only events, such as as the upcoming “Halloween Night” on Saturday, October 29, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., when kids up to age ten are invited to wear their costumes. “Middle school kids don’t want to have to share the space with 3rd graders,” Jason says. “We keep both groups
happy and the parents, too,” with video games, great audio, Wi-Fi and TVs “so dad can watch the games.” Birthday and other private parties are given special treatment at Jump-In. There are two party rooms which can handle up to 40 kids each and not only do you get to keep your things in the party room for the full two hours of your event, Jason says you can do a party for ten kids (which start at $149), bring your own sandwiches, pizzas, cake and other foods (although Jump-In can provide those, too, and also has a concession area). The only additional charges will be for your two-liter bottles of soft drinks. Paper goods are included. “You literally can be out the door for $200 (for ten kids),” he says. “And we know the kids will have a great time. Beat that at any other party place.” And, he adds, Jump-In has Open Bounce Cards for $8 per two-hour bounce and the 6th session is free. Jump-In is located at 35938 S.R. 54 in Zephyrhills. For more information, call 7883484, 966-1363 or visit JumpInFun.net. — GN (Top) Jump-In (on S.R. 54) owner Jason Ladd and his manager Kendall invite the parents & children of Wesley Chapel to have a great party (above) at a great price.
(Top) There is an always-changing variety of inflatables at Jump-In...which also can rent you the awesome inflatable obstacle course above for your next party.

Karaoke Event Rocks Mulligan’s Irish Pub At Pebble Creek CC! If you love to sing and weren’t at the recent fund-raising Karaoke Contest to benefit the campaign of “Little Jan” Roberts for the 2011 Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce’s Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel — held at the newly renovated ballroom at Mulligan’s Irish Pub at Pebble Creek Golf Club (PCGC) in New Tampa — you missed a great evening. The Karaoke Contest for Roberts, who both works for and is raising money for Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, was hosted by New Tampa residents Harald Stone and Jennifer Kibiger. The bottom line is that Roberts is a wonderful woman working and raising money for a great cause. PCGC and my friends CeCe & Karen from CeCe Productions put on another great show, the donated prizes were excellent and the talent on display was top-notch! The amount raised at the event hasn’t been announced, but the contest
itself was broken down into 18 & Under and 18+ age groups. Although the competition was fierce, the winners selected by judges Trevor Morris, Patty DeBlock and I were amazing 8-year-old Jennifer Managan in the 18 & Under division and the always awesome Robbie, singing her trademark “Me & Bobby McGee” in the 18+ division. There was even a surprise appearance by Joan Jett herself (our friend Mary dressed as Joan)! All three Honorar y Mayor candidates — Roberts, John Negley of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel & Mitze Richeson of Cypress Creek Chiropractic — may be on-site on Sun., Nov. 13, 9 .a.-4 p.m., at the Wesley Chapel Health & Wellness Festival at The Grove. Negley also has an event on Tues., Nov. 15, 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., at Bentley Commons in Zephyrhills. For more info, visit WesleyChapelChamber.com or call the Chamber of fi ficce at 994-8534.— GN

“Wolf’s Den” Continued from page 23 Tuesday, November 1, will include a lot of new sandwiches, including items like a savory New York-style Reuben sandwich that senior news writer Sean Bowes raved about, complete with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing (photo top right in this issue’s Neighborhood Magazine header on page 23), an authentic-style pressed Cuban and many more. Advertising customer service manager Nikki Bennett says that her patty melt was one of the best she’s ever had and I always loved Roger’s homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and fresh green beans and his homemade chili rocks, too. At that time, the restaurant will expand its open hours to Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Roger says if the dinner hours are successful, he plans to add beer and wine and expand the menu even further. “And, when that Florida Hospital opens next year, we will likely stay open 24/7.”
A Little Background Music... Roger says he worked more than full-time hours for his family’s more upscale restaurants as a 13-year-old boy, “before there were laws about such things,” and first owned his own place in 1980, a year after the Playboy Club

in Lake Geneva, WI, closed and Roger hired all of the former Bunnies to wait tables, including an 18-year-old Bunny named Patty. “I was quite a bit older than her,” Roger recalls fondly. “But I knew I couldn’t let her get away.” The two have been married 32 years, although Roger will almost-matter-of-factly tell you that Patty will likely lose her long battle with cancer within a year. “I’m grateful that I’ve already had more time with her than I thought possible,” he says. I have heard many stories the past few years about Roger’s soft heart and unflinching commitment to help this community. He has donated to so many local schools, churches and causes and is truly the type to never want any credit for his efforts. “All of the schools and organizations tell me, ‘We’ll name you as corporate partner of the year’ or ‘ we’ll get you come free publicity in the local media,’ but I do what I do because it’s the right thing to do.” For example, he recently donated food for 600 people for the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (see page 1) and dinner for all of the Wiregrass Ranch High players and coaches before their games on Friday nights.

“Festival” Continued from page 1 Restaurant at Lexington Oaks Golf Club and Santo’s Italian Grill both retained their titles from last year, as The Oaks again was this year’s favorite among a panel of nine judges (which included Pasco County commissioner Jack Mariano) and Santo’s again won
“The People’s Choice” award. Unfortunately, I had to leave the event early to go to press, so I don’t know which vehicles won awards at the Ronnie Setser’s Custom Car Show or which kids won Sunday’s “Pumpkin Patch Pageant” sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel. We will provide those updates and maybe more pics in our next issue!
(Clockwise from top right): The crowd obviously enjoyed the cool, comfortable day. Voice For The Orphans and many other school and non-profit groups — as well as businesses like Southern Crafted Homes and Keller Williams Realty in New Tampa — pitched their messages to thousands of attendees. “Wing Battle” judge Jacky of News & Talk 99.9 FM enjoys another spicy wing. Lutz resident and craftsmen Ron Lynn was among dozens of crafters who displayed and sold their wares at the Chamber’s Fall Festival.
