Construction Begins On PHCC’s Porter Campus At Wiregrass By Sean Bowes Construction has started on the new Pasco-Hernando Community College (PHCC) full-service site, to be called the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch. The school is scheduled to open and hold classes by the spring semester of 2014. Since June, workers have been relocating gopher tortoises that lived within the 110,534 square-foot area on which the campus will be built. Currently, contractors have been clearing and grading the land to lay the foundation for the facility as well as laying down the underground utilities. A spokesperson for PHCC says that the new campus will offer the latest hightech trends in higher education with a traditional focus on teaching and learning. And, at least two floors of the main classroom building will be dedicated to health programs. “PHCC is very excited about opening the Porter Campus in Wesley

Chapel in January 2014,” says Lucy Miller, PHCC’s executive director of marketing and public relations. “The enthusiasm for the new campus, expressed by the business area and the residents of this growing community, underscores the need for providing higher education and training services in this area of our two-county district.” The campus should be holding

classes approximately one year after the opening of Raymond James Financial opens its campus and two years after the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has opened its doors to patients. Both the hospital and Raymond James Financial should benefit from the close proximity to the Porter Campus, which will primarily focus on its business and health care programs, in addition to providing

many general education classes. “Currently we have articulation agreements with Florida Hospital for health programs and look forward to our continued partnership as we open the Porter Campus,” says Miller. “PHCC is always open to forming new partnership agreements to provide educational and training opportunities to benefit residents in our area.” District 2 county commissioner Pat Mulieri, whose district includes all of Wesley Chapel, says she is excited about the introduction of a PHCC campus in the Wiregrass area, which was previously a 5,000-plus-acre cattle ranch nicknamed “Gatorville.” “Wesley Chapel is definitely an economic engine for Pasco and New Tampa,” says Mulieri, a retired former PHCC professor. “The campus will be a catalyst for growth and development. Businesses need an educated workforce and PHCC can definitely play an See “PHCC” on page 5.

the school since it opened its doors in 1991. Weightman’s history runs deep in Pasco County, as most of the roads near the school were unpaved and the Bridgewater and Watergrass subdivisions, now located near Wells Rd. in the same area were still cattle ranches. It was the second school to open in the Wesley Chapel area, after Quail Hollow Elementary. Also, The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce had its first meetings at the Weightman media center with Beth Brown, now executive director of secondary schools in Pasco County, who was an assistant principal at Weightman at the time. Honorary Mayor’s Race Winding Down To December 15th! I have now accomplished my goal of attending at least one individual event for each of the three candidates for the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel. I have been to (and was one of the judges for) a Karaoke party for candidate “Little Jan” Roberts of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Tampa Bay and more recently attended a coed Bunco party fund raiser for candidate Mitze Richeson, co-owner of Cypress Creek Chiropractic (more on that below). I also did attend last weekend’s Wesley Chapel’s Health & Wellness Festival at The Grove shopping center, which was sponsored by the Chamber, The Grove and by Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (and its Foundation), the employer of the third candidate, John Negley. (Note - The Wellness Festival was held the day after I went to press with this issue, so if you want to see pics from it, you’ll have to visit our website, WCNeighborhoodNews.com...and of course, our next issue.) The three candidates have each put on multiple events the past several months, but it’s hard enough for one guy (me) to get to every Chamber event, much less every fund raiser for every Honorary Mayor candidate. I am willing to put in a little effort of my own, however, to help publicize the truly wonderful efforts of these “figurehead” candidates, all of whom are hardworking professionals who are not only Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News 15345 Amberly Dr., Tampa, FL 33647 Phone: (813) 910-2575 Fax: 910-2483 Website: WCNeighborhoodNews.com Adv. An editorial by Gary Nager helping to publicize and raise money for the nonprofit Chamber itself, but each also for their respective chosen charities. I know I’ve told you this before, but Roberts and Negley are also helping their respective employers, while Richeson’s efforts also will help the Oasis, A Pregnancy Care Center. Big Brothers is, of course a wonderful nonprofit program that matches adults with young people in need of a positive relationship with a strong role model. The Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Foundation is the philanthropic “wing” of the new 80-bed hospital set to open in the Wiregrass Ranch area next year. And, Oasis is a non-denominational, Christian, faith-based, nonprofit ministry group of people who offer encouragement and support to all women and families experiencing an unplanned pregnancy or other lifechanging situations, regardless of faith or background. Obviously, all three are worthy causes and all three candidates deserve whatever accolades (and cash!) we can give them, as the person who gets to wear current Honorary Mayor Debbie Yoerg’s sash will be the candidate who raises the most money, as each dollar raised represents one “vote.” The candidates always keep the results of their fund raisers “under wraps” until the final totals and this year’s winner are announced, which will be on Thursday, December 15, 6 p.m. Call 994-8534, stop in at the Chamber office, which is located in The Grove (across from T’s Boutique), at 6013 Wesley Grove Blvd., or visit WesleyChapelChamber.com for more information about the Honorary Mayor’s race and other upcoming Chamber events.

Coed Bunco?

The event I attended for Mitze Richeson, the wife and partner of Cypress Creek Chiropractic’s Dr. Micah Richeson, DC, was the first coed Bunco game I have ever heard of since I first heard of the game. Bunco, which is a fastpaced dice game similar to (but completely different than) Yahtzee, had always been a mysterious place “for women only,” Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel candidate or so I thought. But, Richeson Mitze Richeson (standing) goes over the rules for her coed Bunco fund raiser. and Land O’Lakes Honorary Mayor candidate Rene Van Hout of LOL Transport gathered together at least a dozen of their friends and supporters at Organic Life Coffee House on S.R. 54 in Lutz — which has delicious coffee, tea, desserts and even thin crust pizzas, by the way — and a great time was had by all. I don’t know how much money was raised for Richeson’s and Van Hout’s respective campaigns, but even the four or five men who played enjoyed the event, too. Good luck to all the candidates and look for updates on our website, as the Honorary Mayor winner won’t be announced until after we go to press with our next issue of Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News.

Woman Arrested For False Incident “Weightman” Continued from page 1 Report At Veterans Elementary teachers and staffers from years past Michelle Bella, a Lutz resident who accused a Veterans Elementary School teacher of shaking her son in front of her is now facing charges of filing a false police report to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO). According to an incident report, Bella, 41, was visiting Veterans Elementary, located on S.R. 54 at Progress Pkwy., on September 27, to have lunch with her son, who is in the first grade. She claimed that she saw the teacher first yell at her son for running in the cafeteria and then grab him by the shoulders and shake him. The teacher denied ever touching, grabbing or shaking Bella’s son. After the alleged incident, Bella notified the school’s principal, Donna Busby, as well as Pasco County superintendent of schools Heather Fiorentino. Unsatisfied with the response from the administrators, Bella contacted PCSO to file a police report A deputy came to Bella’s home at 26916 Roseann Pla. in Lutz to file a report, where she said the teacher

took her son “by the shoulders and turned him towards her and began to shake him,” the PCSO report stated. The deputy then started an Michelle Bella investigation on the case where he reviewed the surveillance tape of the cafeteria at Veterans Elementary (which showed no signs of child abuse), and also spoke with several eyewitnesses. The deputy’s report stated that Bella’s claims did not match those of the tape nor the witnesses’ statements. According to the PCSO report, Bella “willfully conveyed false information in a child abuse report.” “I knew what I saw,” said Bella, to the deputies who arrested her on November 7. She was released from the Land O’ Lakes Jail on November 8 on a $150 bond. Bella has previously been arrested in Pasco County for domestic battery. She also had been arrested in Tampa for trespassing in 2004. — SB

“PHCC” Continued from page 1 important part in providing this.” The Porter Campus was originally scheduled to open in August of 2013, but was pushed back five months, mostly due to a veto by Florida Governor Rick Scott on May 26 for the fifth and final installment of $6.9 million of state funding for the last stages of construction for the campus. However, $45 million already has been secured from the state, which should bring the campus to near completion. PHCC officials have said that they plan to seek the remaining balance for the campus which, when finished, will have cost a total of $52 million, from their normal budget process in the upcoming years.

A Lasting Legacy The Porter family, for whom the campus is named, donated the land to PHCC on January 22, 2010, after nearly a decade of talking about having a college located in Wiregrass Ranch. The campus is being built at 2727 Mansfield Blvd., just off S.R. 56, next to Wiregrass Ranch High. The Porter Campus will be located less than threemiles from the new Florida Hospital and just a quarter-mile from Raymond James Financial’s planned offices.

“We were waiting for the perfect time to start building the campus,” says J.D. Porter, the treasurer for the Porter Family Trust. In addition to donating the land for the campus, on October 15, the Porter family submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the county and plans to speak to the Pasco Board of County Commissioners (BCC) about a proposed major public park that the family would also like to see built north of the new PHCC campus. “It would be the first park of its kind,” explains Porter. “A park that is run with a private and public relationship that creates a venue for tourism, has great amenities, is well kept and serves a public need.” The Porters donated 40 acres for a park in Wiregrass that they would like to see turned into a multi-purpose sports complex. Porter said that the park is planned to feature well-kept, multi-purpose fields for sports like soccer and lacrosse, in addition to facilities that could bring sports and recreation tournaments to the Wesley Chapel area, which could stimulate more business for local restaurants and hotels. “The new and continued quality development of Wesley Chapel will reshape the mindset of Pasco County's position in both the Tampa Bay region and the state of Florida,” says Porter.

It may not look like much right now, but behind this fence is the construction site for the new Porter Campus of Pasco-Hernando Community College.

Tampa’s Panhandling Ordinance Copies Pasco’s By Sean Bowes Five months after Pasco County passed its own ordinance to outlaw panhandlers on streets and roadways, the City of Tampa has decided to do the same, in effort to make its roads panhandler-free, too. “I know what's coming,” said Rick (who asked that his last name not be published), a panhandler who regularly asks for spare change at Amberly Dr. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in New Tampa, after the City of Tampa passed its first-ever panhandling ban October 6. “I read the papers, but what can I do? I can't get a job in this economy.” The “no panhandling” ordinance went into effect in Tampa on November . It outlaws any panhandling in Tampa, every day except Sunday, the same as in Pasco. The one-day exception allows for charitable collections such as firefighters’ “Fill the Boot” fund-raisers that collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)’s “Jerry's Kids” and also for panhandlers like Rick to continue to ask for handouts. However, newspaper hawkers, who are mostly independent contractors for The Tampa Tribune and the St. Peters-

6

burg Times, are still allowed to sell papers to drivers seven days a week from the side of Tampa’s roadways. The Pasco County ordinance allows only for the hawking of Sunday papers. According to published reports, The Tampa Tribune typically sells 14,000 newspapers by hawkers each Sunday in Pasco County. Many of the hawkers are poor, and selling the papers is their only source of income. They earn 50 cents for every

paper they sell. Sometimes they make as little as $50 for an 11- hour shift, says Jeremy Block, a hawker who regularly sells the Times. District 2 Pasco County commissioner Pat Mulieri, whose district includes all of Wesley Chapel, supported the ban and voted for it on June 7, stating that her reason for endorsing it was mainly a safety issue. Mulieri says she is pleased that the ordinance passed and has heard no complaints, “All appears quiet on [the panhandling front],” she says.

The City of Tampa’s new panhandling ordinance still allows panhandlers like Rick on city streets one day per week.

HairStyle Salon Offers A Classy Setting & Affordable Flair By Sheryl Young Hairstylist and salon owner Michael Schipano isn’t only a master of great style. He’s got a firm hold on what hair customers need and want in today’s economy. He and business partner Fred Davis figured out how to compete in the fashion-forward hair industry while remaining reasonably priced, yet offering a first-class atmosphere with top-notch designers. With the easy-to-remember name HairStyle Salon and located in the Willow Bend Towne Center at Collier Pkwy. and S.R. 54 in nearby Lutz, Schipano and Davis opened the doors to their comfortably elegant, independent salon last July. HairStyle offers a full slate of hair services for children and adults, from general cutting and styling to complicated color and highlight jobs. The salon also offers waxing. Schipano has more than 20 years of haircrafting experience, primarily in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area. Davis is the computer whiz and bookkeeper who also runs the reception end of the business. “It was time to make a career move and open my own shop,” Schipano says. “But, besides that, I had many clients who were decreasing how often they could come in, because of this tough economy. That was a big consideration in the kind of place I wanted to open. I also had to figure out how to do the pricing.” So, Schipano and Davis made a definitive choice – they decided to charge lower prices for Michael’s hair services than he had charged while working at previous salons in the area. In addition to the lower prices, HairStyle also offers a 20-percent discount for teachers, policemen, firemen and military personnel. “I feel fortunate to be able to open my own place,” Schipano states, “and I want to give back to the community.” But, when it comes to the quality

of style, HairStyle doesn’t disappoint. The salon is pristine, spacious and contemporary. Davis and Schipano have combined black leather styling and lounge areas with elegant crystal chandeliers and bright, uncluttered product displays. The environment is interactive and friendly, while classic. “And of course, we want our clients to look great,” Schipano says. “If you come in and say you just feel ‘okay’ about your hair, that’s not good enough for us. We’re going to make you look and feel terrific.” To that end, he and Davis drew three very talented hair artists from the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel areas. “We were very selective in the stylists we invited to join us,” Davis says. Those stylists are Ashley Bish, Kim Ripley and Shanna Young. They all bring outstanding experience to the table, allowing HairStyle to offer everything from the simplest cut, to applying extensions, to the most innovative coloring techniques. Kim had worked with Schipano before. “I love working with Michael, and it’s a great place to work because of the open plaza and lots of exposure.” Ashley agrees. “We really do have a great team here.” Hair client Michelle Dyakon has been with Ashley for two years, and followed her to HairStyle. “I’ve been here since day one,” Michelle says. “I visit Ashley almost every week.” Not to be outdone, Kim’s return client Molly Gannuscio decided to sing the praises of her stylist as well as those of the new salon. “I came to the shalon at this location before and wasn’t sure I should try the new owner,” she recalls. “But once Kim did my cut and color, and I saw how friendly everyone was and their great prices, I became a fan.” Stylist Shanna happened to be out on the day of the interview, but Schipano says she’s very much part of the HairStyle family, as is receptionist

Dental Sleep Disorder Treatments & More From Jay Nelson, DMD By Camille Gillies Getting a movie-star smile is as close as your neighborhood dentist’s office. Thanks to the technological advances in modern dentistry, you too can have pearly whites that rival Halle Berry’s or Matt Damon’s. Of course, to achieve the same kind of striking results, you need to choose a dentist well-trained in cosmetic dentistry, and that’s a specialty of cosmetic and general dentist Jay Nelson, DMD. Located on Highland Oaks Blvd., just east of Livingston Rd. on S.R. 54 in Lutz (just 10-15 minutes from much of New Tampa), Dr. Nelson has been serving patients in and around Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel since 1987. In addition to general dentistry, Dr. Nelson specializes in all aspects of cosmetic dentistry – from veneers and teeth whitening to Invisalign™ and Six Month Smiles™ orthodontics– as well as in the emerging discipline of dental sleep medicine that addresses snoring and sleep apnea.

Flash That Winning Smile! By now, most people are aware of the term veneers, the thin shells of

14

porcelain that are custom-made to create a sparkling white smile, but you may not be familiar with a new alternative to traditional veneers called DURAthins. DURAthins are wafer-thin veneers that adhere directly to the front of the teeth, which eliminates the need for enamel reduction. Another new alternative – this one for straightening teeth – is a procedure called Six Month Smiles™. It’s a shortterm orthodontic treatment that shifts only the teeth visible when you smile; it does not change your overall bite. These braces close gaps and fix crowded or overlapped teeth, often within six months. Priced lower than traditional braces and barely visible due to the use of clear brackets and tooth-colored wires, they also entail fewer office visits. Six Month Smiles™ is available to most patients older than 18. “This is a procedure for adults,” says Dr. Nelson. “For the younger patients, under 18, I always insist that they have their bite corrected by an orthodontist.” Dr. Nelson also offers Invisalign™ for adult patients who don’t want the inconvenience or embarrassment of metal braces. Using a series of custom, removable plastic shells called aligners,

Invisalign™ moves teeth into their optimal position in one to two years, which Dr. Nelson says is typically faster than traditional braces. If a chipped tooth is making you self-conscious, you may be only an appointment away from boosting your self-esteem. Dr. Nelson will bond the problem tooth to rebuild its shape, and then sculpt and polish the restoration to perfection. He says cosmetic bonding can be a viable, affordable alternative to porcelain veneers, although it is not a permanent fix. With proper care, bonding typically lasts 5-10 years. If your problem involves missing teeth, Dr. Nelson can replace them with permanent dental implants.

Have No Fear If any of these procedures or simply getting a filling sends you into a cold sweat, Dr. Nelson and his warm and friendly staff will assuage your fears with minimal sedation dentistry. Here’s how it works: Before your visit, you take a pill that totally relaxes you but enables you to respond to questions. When you become fully conscious you have little or no memory of the experience. “This type of sedation is also a

great alternative for busy people who want to complete several procedures in one visit,” says Dr. Nelson. With modern-day dentistry, nervous patients may not even need sedation. Many fillings can now be done without shots or drills. Dr. Nelson’s use of technology such as air abrasion (an alternative to traditional drilling, it’s a relatively new decay removal and tooth preparation tool that produces no vibration or heat, so patients require little or no anesthetic) and dental lasers make treatments more comfortable. The procedures are often completed in a single visit. Dr. Nelson says that laser technology is revolutionizing dentistry. Using Laser Periodontal Therapy™, he is able to treat gum disease without scalpels or sutures. Laser treatment can help avoid gum surgery and it speeds healing and recovery time.

Improve Your Sleep Another breakthrough in the field is in the area of sleep medicine. Five years ago, the American Association of Sleep Medicine approved the use of oral appliances for treating sleep apnea, a serious condition in which a person stops breathing while asleep. Dr. Nel-

Nelson works cooperatively with area physicians who specialize in sleep disorders to address individual patient needs. He says many physicians whose patients don’t need or can’t tolerate a CPAP device refer patients to him. Some sleep apnea sufferers find CPAP apparatus cumbersome to wear and especially troublesome to use when traveling.

He says if you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, you may be a candidate for an oral appliance called the SomnoMed™. “I have many patients who refused to wear their CPAPs (Continuous Positive Air Pressure machines) but now wear this appliance successfully,” says

Dr. Nelson, who custom fits the SomnoMed™ for each patient. The acrylic device fits over the upper and lower teeth, similar to an orthodontic retainer or mouth guard, and gently realigns the jaw to open the airway, allowing more air into the lungs while you sleep. “The success rate is excellent and I’ve seen it make an incredible difference in people’s lives,” comments Dr. Nelson. Also a member of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Dentistry and the Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr.

Dr. Nelson earned his bachelor's degree Summa cum Laude from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, and his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics, the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Nelson is able to offer the most recent advances in dentistry due to his commitment to continuing education. He has trained with some of the world’s most prominent cosmetic dentists and has received post-graduate training at such prestigious institutions as the Center for Advanced Dental Studies and the Pankey Institute. He has earned a proficiency certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry and a Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry.

All of that training has resulted in many happy patients. A patient named Erin says, “I have never felt as comfortable about smiling as I do today. The veneers were the best thing I have ever done in my life. I wish I had done it sooner. My self-esteem and confidence have risen to new levels, thanks to Dr. Nelson’s artistic hand.” Another patient named Susan says she is happy that she no longer fears going to the dentist. “For someone who has had dental fears most of her life, I actually look forward to my every-threemonth visits,” Susan says. “I always recommend Dr. Nelson and his team to anyone who asks about a great dentist. It's so worth the drive to be treated with such respect and caring by the entire staff.” Dr. Nelson and his wife, Susan, are longtime residents of Tampa Palms and have two daughters. To request an appointment online, visit DrJayNelson.com. Or, call 949-0424 to schedule a complimentary cosmetic dental evaluation or sleep apnea/snoring consultation. Anista New Tampa - An Urgent Care Center With Something Extra By Sean Bowes New Tampa already has numerous urgent care medical centers, but none of them are quite like Anista New Tampa, located in the Highwoods Preserve area (near Muvico). Anista New Tampa’s owner Will Welter says the new center is a “one-stop shop” for non-emergency ailments that also handles cosmetic and medical aesthetic procedures for its customers. Welter opened the area’s newest urgent care center last month.Conveniently located near the intersection of Highwoods Preserve Pkwy. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd., one visit to Anista will likely make you wonder, “Why aren’t all urgent cares like this?” Anista New Tampa features a comfortable atmosphere and compassionate, professional care that is already making it a hit with the center’s patients. While you may be walking into Anista New Tampa with a sore throat or a mild fever - the cozy leather coaches, impressive artwork and HD televisions are soothing enough to make you feel better instantly. But, if they don't do the trick, Anista’s physicians may be

able to help. The 2,000-sq.-ft. facility is designed to handle many medical problems than can develop unexpectedly and require immediate attention. The facility is equipped with five exam rooms, a digital X-ray machine and an advanced on-site lab, as well as a fullystaffed office with full-time medical assistants, in addition to a chief medical officer who oversees the operation. “I couldn't believe how fast I was in and out of their office,” says Chris Buonomo, a West Meadows resident. “I had pink eye, no insurance and didn’t have an appointment. When I walked in I was seen immediately, I had my vitals taken and I was diagnosed in less than 20 minutes.” Buonomo’s visit cost him less than $100, which included the consultation, diagnosis and prescription for conjunctivitis medicine. “We aim to provide cost-effective, high-quality health care,” says Dr. Michael O’Neal, Anista New Tampa’s chief medical officer. “We’re not looking to replace anyone's family doctor. In fact, we want to complement patients’ primary physicians. We know that sometimes medical attention does

not necessary warrant a trip to the emergency room and that most doctor’s offices close at 5 p.m. We’re here to you compliment primary physician.” To that end, Anista is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekends.

Pebble Creek Golf Club Has Lots Of News

The oldest golf course in New Tampa (located just a mile or so south of the Pasco County line off BBD) keeps getting newer, as there is plenty of news to report about the Pebble Creek Golf Club (PCGC). Of course, the transformation began when owner Bill Place gave the golf course itself a complete, makeover that was completed in 2008. More recently, the club’s banquet room has not only seen its seating capacity roughly doubled, it also has been completely revamped and upgraded. One person who’s happy about the transformation of the banquet room (which is located adjacent to, but separated from) Mulligan’s Irish Pub inside PCGC is new (see, there’s that word again) sales and catering director Mary Ann Yaney, who raves, “That room is literally selling itself to local brides. 1320 Engineering Now Open In Tampa Palms

I have known Mark Pacheco and his son Jonny since we first became back-to-back neighbors in Hunter’s

Green 16 years ago. Mark, a long-time car enthusiast, definitely passed on that gene to his son, as Jonny has been ordering and installing custom rims, body kits, sound systems and accessories for local residents — and creating new looks and rebuilding engines for his own cars — since before he graduated from high school four+ years ago. He and Mark started 1320 Engineering at that time in a warehouse located near the Skate Park of Tampa. They also had a retail location for a while in Land O’Lakes, but now, 1320 Engineering has opened even closer to home — in the Shoppes at The Pointe in Tampa Palms plaza anchored by World of Beer and Coffee Beanery and located between Stonewood Grill & Tavern and Olive Garden. Their shop is still being transformed into more of a showroom, although there already are some cool accessories and hot rims on display. If there’s a car enthusiast in your family, or someone who would appreciate being able to totally transform his or her “rig” this holiday season, you should definitely call or stop into 1320 Engineering as soon as possible — and please tell the Pachecos we sent you! 1320 Engineering is located at 17020 Palm Pointe Dr. For more info, call 973-8816 or visit 1320Engineering.net.

Dr. Nicole Mitchell Celebrates 1st Year! I wanted to thank local family, implant and cosmetic dentist Dr. Nicole Mitchell, DMD, for inviting me and the entire New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News crew to join her and her crew on Nov. 7 at The Palms Lounge at Peabody’s to celebrate the oneyear anniversary of Dr. Mitchell’s dental office in Highwoods Preserve in New Tampa. The party itself was awesome. The Palms is a spacious, but still cozy, locale for any type of private event, from birthday parties to Jets Club gatherings to comedy nights to dental office anniversary celebrations. And, with Peabody’s owner Bryan Peabody on hand, Dr. Mitchell (3rd from left in photo) and her associates — Kristen, Laura & Michelle — treated about 30 or 40 guests to two different types of Peabody's awesome wings and true NY-style pizza, plus Cuban sandwiches, crudité, fruit and cheese platters and more, including an awesome video of the office’s first-year highlights that was shared with the attendees. Considering that Kristen and Laura used to work with the Neighborhood News’ own Ashley Knoblach and Nikki Bennett at Peabody’s, and the

fact that our office is right next door -oh, and the additional fact Dr. Mitchell and her crew all give the Neighborhood News so much credit for her success in her first year — helped make the celebration a must-attend event for us. Congrats, Doc. And thanks for including all of us in such a great party. The dental office of Dr. Nicole Mitchell, DMD, is located at 18043 Highwoods Preserve Pkwy., in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza, next to Westshore Pizza. Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble’s All-Ages Band Plays Well Together By Sean Bowes The Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble (WCWE) is a group of about 60 amateur musicians who have been playing together locally since 2008. The group started out small (as a brass quartet), but continues to grow and evolve into a well-respected “concert band.” The group is composed of roughly half woodwinds (flutes, clarinets and saxophones) and half brass (trumpets, French horns, trombones and tubas) in addition to three percussionists. Originally, the Ensemble rehearsed at Hyundai of Wesley Chapel on S.R. 54, which donated a place to play while the group was still small (10-15 members). However, the WCWE recently began playing and practicing at the Crossroads United Methodist Church on County Line Rd., a mile or so west of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. WCWE’s director Scott Leahy says the band’s chemistry is what makes them play so well together, which is notable considering the age differences between some of the musicians. The oldest member of the

22

WCWE is an 83-year-old trumpet player and the youngest is a 13-yearold flutist. According to Leahy, between 15 and 20 of the members are students from the Wesley Chapel and/or New Tampa area. “It’s really quite wonderful,” Leahy says. “The adults get inspired by the kids and the kids are mentored by the adults. They play together well and it sounds really great.” The concert band has players from many different local schools in the area including Wiregrass Ranch High and John Long , and Thomas E. Weightman Middle Schools. Recently the 60 musicians of various ages from the music ensemble performed a concert during the New Tampa YMCA's Fall Harvest Festival on October 29, which was free to the public. The community concert band performed some classic as well as a few recognizable songs from movies and television shows. "It's a wonderful outreach for the kids and for the group,” says Leahy. “We have some wonderful talented musicians here. We're just trying to get out there and let people know were here."

The Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble is a unique blend of young middle and high school students and experienced musicians of all ages. Wiregrass Ranch High Girls Hoops Opens With Two Wins! By Marigny Nevitt Starting fresh with new coach John Gant, the Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) Bulls girls basketball team is off to a good start of the 2011-12 season. The Lady Bulls opened the season on November 9, with a 57-38 win over Sunlake High and followed that up the next night with a 66-35 trouncing of Seminole High. The wins came during a two-day preseason Tip Off “Classic” held at WRH. The Bulls came out with confidence in the first quarter against Sunlake and cruised to a 22-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Although the rest of the game was a lot less lopsided, the dominating first period allowed the Bulls to secure the win. “The first quarter is how we play,” Gant said afterward. “I thought we came out very confident.” Gant applauded Sunlake coach Reesa Hendrixs for “doing a good job” with her team. he also acknowledged that while the opening win was good for the Bulls, “We still have a lot of work to do.” Gant has inherited a young team from former coach Greg Finkel, who

led the squad through its first five years to a 73-56 record, including a solid 16-10 last year. Gant has only four returning players on his squad and of those, only senior guard (and last year’s top scorer for the Bulls) Kelly McCaffrey, junior guard Alex Diepholz and sophomore guard Logan Seoane played significant minutes for Finkel. Despite their youth, the Bulls have shown some early chemistry on the court, although it has not yet reached the level where Gant hopes to see it. McCaffrey was like a coach on the court against Sunlake, clapping and yelling out plays all game. She surely is one of the better players in Pasco County, as well as in the Bulls Class 7A, District 9. The Bulls are the only Pasco-based team in their district, as the other four teams — Chamberlain, Freedom, Steinbrenner and Gaither — are all in Hillsborough. Unfortunately, we didn’t see stats or more information about the win over Seminole posted on any of the high school hoops websites (or local daily newspapers). Gant says he is looking for a successful season, but says that success

won’t necessarily be measured by the team’s winloss record. More concerned with the growth of his players, both individually and as a team, Gant looks to continue getting the enthusiastic response he has received from the girls thus far during practices. “My job as Wiregrass Ranch High forward Amanda Melosky (in white) fights for a loose ball during the Lady Bulls’ 57-38 win over Sunlake. a coach is to get the most out of have been a preseason game, 62-30, my players,” he says. “That will put to District 5A-8 rival Pasco High. wins and losses where they need to Unfortunately, at our press time, be.” Brown had not yet submitted a roster or results for his team to any of the Wildcats Lose 1st Game high school basketball websites, so we The Bulls’ traditional rival is Wes- have no further details on the Lady ley Chapel High (WCH), against ‘Cats, other than knowing that their whom they will host on Monday, regular-season opener was Nov. 17 at December 12, at home. Magnolia Spa & Salon — The 5-Star European Day Spa On S.R. 54! By Gary Nager If you’ve ever driven west on S.R 54, past where it meets up with S.R. 56 and I-75, you’ve probably driven past the amazing Magnolia Spa & Salon, located in the same building as Big Frog T-shirts, next to the Extreme Adventures indoor play place. You say you’ve never seen it, even though it’s been there ten years? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. But, if you’ve never stopped in to check out Magnolia, you’d be surprised at what you’ll find inside — a magnificently elegant, immaculate, authentic European-style day spa and hair and nail salon that rivals anything you’ll find in the finest hotels and resorts. I’m not kidding. I have been to many of the best resort spas in the Tampa Bay area — from Saddlebrook Resort to the Don CeSar and from Innisbrook to the Renaissance Vinoy and many more — and Magnolia truly does rival or surpass them all in terms of cleanliness, the quality of the services offered, the “experience” itself and perhaps most important of all in today’s economy, the value for your money.

Gizella, who has been a licensed aesthetician for more than 20 years, actually designed Magnolia’s unique look and interior design for a doctor’s office in Merrick, Long Island, NY, that was being converted into an early version of today’s MedSpas. But, when the Poroslays decided to move to Florida, instead of staying to build that doctor’s MedSpa, Gizella and Adam built the building that is now home to Magnolia, Big Frog and a soon-to-open bakery restaurant, according to Gizella’s specs. Santo’s Sold; Remington’s Still Open Despite Rumors

Just as we’re concluding this year’s Dining Survey & Contest (see page 26), two of your favorite (and ours) restaurants in Wesley Chapel have been rumored to have closed over the past two weeks, but only one of those rumors is actually true. Santo’s Italian Grill, located in the Pinebrook at The Grove plaza on S.R. 54, has been sold. Owner Ken Santo, who is still also an owner of Skinny’s Sports Bar in the same plaza, could not give us any details about the sale, but Santo’s is closed for now and will be converted to an entirely new restaurant concept for at least several weeks. Of course, we will provide an update, either on our website (WCNeighborhoodNews.com) or in our next Wesley Chapel issue, or both. Meanwhile, my friend Abe Srour says he wants to dispel the rumors that his Remington’s Steak House on S.R.

54 has closed or is closing. “We are open for now,” Abe says. “And, when we do shut down, it will be temporarily for renovations only.” All I can tell you is that I was in Remington’s the Thursday before we went to press, three days after the restaurant was reportedly closed, and the place was packed! Remington’s Steak House is located at 27405 S.R. 54 and is open every day for lunch and dinner. For more info, call 973-1208 or visit RemingtonsSteakhouse.com.

Frogury Now Open

If you love frozen yogurt, there’s a new shoppe that has opened in the same plaza as Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Pita Republic, at the corner of BBD and County Line Rd. (in the separate building from Sweetbay and LA Fitness). It’s called Frogury Frozen Yogurt Factory and it features several different flavors of nonfat, low-calorie and even low-sugar yogurt that made me think of the episode of “Seinfeld” where Jerry and then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani both gained a bunch of weight after eating supposedly nonfat frozen yogurt. I already love Frogury’s classic chocolate, Tahitian vanilla, cake batter and cappuccino flavors, the fact you fill

Liang’s Adds Menu Items

This issue is the last one where you can cast ballots (see the “Dining Survey & Contest” on page 26) for your favorite restaurants in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel and one local eatery that is certain to be on your list of favorites again is Liang’s Bistro on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., next to Chick-fil-A. Liang’s has been our readers’ favorite Asian restaurant every year it’s been open and has always been among our top ten for your favorite restaurant of any kind in New Tampa. And now, with the addition of some delicious new menu items, Liang’s is certain to be adding to its popularity. Two new appetizers are among the four new items. The first is “Kung Fu Shrimp,” which I wasn’t able to sample because of my shellfish allergy, but it’s a spicy, fried shrimp appetizer for two which is Liang;’s unique take on another restaurant’s “Bang Bang Shrimp.” I did enjoy the savory and spicy new mushroom lettuce wraps, which are chopped portobello mushrooms in another “secret” sauce. My favorite new item is the awesome new fish filet with portobello mushrooms, snow pea pods, carrots and fresh ginger (above) in a zesty gingerbased sauce that clings perfectly to the

fish. I also loved the new banana cheesecake roll, which is a fried “egg roll” stuffed with banana cheesecake and served with delicious vanilla ice cream. It’s a killer for my diet (I only ate one bite of it), but well worth the fat and calories. For more info, including how you can get either of the appetizers or the new dessert free with your dine-in (only) order, call 978-1225 or visit LiangsBistroUS. com or stop in at 17515 BBD Blvd.

Benedetto’s Adds Lunch!

Even though it’s located outside of our distribution area, many of our readers have long named Benedetto’s Ristorante Italiano as among their favorites in the entire Tampa Bay area. Owner/ Chef Ben Pumo, a man who loves to cook with all kinds of sauces, is opening his place for lunch beginning on Thursday, December 1. “People are always asking us to open for lunch, so we’re giving it a try,” Ben says. See the ad below for great coupon deals on lunch and dinner at Benedetto’s (21520 Village Lakes Shopping Center (on S.R. 54), Land O’Lakes. elegant body, facial and massage treatment rooms, a large salon area, locker rooms for men and women, a truly serene relaxation room and the cleanest bathrooms you’ll find anywhere. “I’m telling you that you could eat off the floor in any room at Magnolia Spa,” says Neighborhood News advertising customer service manager Nikki Bennett. “If we weren’t doing this story, I don’t know if I ever would’ve stopped in, but wow. The place, the people and the services are amazing. It’s a five-star spa, for sure!”

The Spa Services...

Customers of Magnolia Spa have such a huge variety of services available to them that there’s no way I can list them all here. But, your choice of facial services includes everything from a Magnolia Signature Facial to a warm paraffin mask facial and facials designed especially for men and even teens. A wide variety of facials with peels also is on the Magnolia menu. There’s a Kinelift Treatment skin rejuvenation program that utilizes LED light therapy and micro currents, available with or without microdermabrasion. Or, try a Dermalift, which uses microcurrent to revitalize neck and chest muscles. And, there are waxing hair removal services available for every possible area of need. I can personally vouch for the Licensed Massage Therapy services at Magnolia. Although I didn’t utilize Adam’s services, Jenny, the spa’s female massage therapist, gave me a wonderful relaxation massage. I told her that I can’t handle the deeper tissue massages and she definitely took it easy on me, but still worked out all of my problem areas, including a sore muscle in my leg. I am definitely going to try a hot stone massage next time and there are prenatal and postpartum massages, aromatherapy and even foot reflex point therapy.

Body treatments include everything from a “chocolate fix” to a body polish with aromatherapy sea salt or sugar glow and Gizella’s specialty, the papaya-pineapple cream fraiche wrap. Got cellulite? Magnolia offers a variety of treatments for it. And, the spa doesn’t just offer your basic manicures and pedicures, they offer acrylic and gel nails and a full-treatment spa pedicure, all at prices that are not much more than, but well worth, not having to be overpowered by the smell in most nail salons. Oh, and the nail technician Amelia is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Speaking of knowledge, hair stylists and color specialists Joanna, Gina and Kasey are all not only experienced, but true pros who really know hair. “Kasey is like an encyclopedia of knowledge about hair,” said Neighborhood News website/marketing manager Ashley Knoblach after Kasey gave her a whole new look. “And I love what she did with my hair. I think I have to start coming here all the time.” And, best of all with the holidays coming up, you can purchase gift certificates or a huge variety of spa packages for that someone special. See the Magnolia ad on page 18 for some great deals on hair, facial and massage services. Magnolia Spa & Salon is located at 24836 S.R. 54. It is open Tuesday-Saturday. For appointments, hours and more info, visit MagnoliaSpaSalon.com or call 909-4711 and tell our friend Kim the receptionist that we sent you!

Aspirations Winery Offers Tastings, Classes, Custom Labels & More! By Gary Nager The Aspirations Winery, located on E. Fowler Ave. in Temple Terrace (in the same plaza as CDB’s Pizza, just 2025 minutes from most of Wesley Chapel, which no longer has a wine bar of its own), is definitely a unique place that is well worth visiting. Owner Bill Linville is always happy to give you a quick tour of his working winery, where he makes a nice variety of red, white and fruit-infused wines. Aspirations, which originally was better known as “Wine Not?” when New Tampa resident Bob French originally opened it in the same location back in 2003, is an elegant-looking locale for sampling some tasty (seriously) wines and to purchase great gifts for virtually any occasion, from a unique birthday present to wedding favors for 200 or more people. And, Linville has added some other unique features, including a “Monet & Merlot” painting class (more on this below). Linville, who lives in Pinellas County with his wife Robin, actually found a listing for Aspirations on Craig’sList.com when he was looking for a new business a little more than a year ago. The former banker, who was most recently with 5/3 Bank for seven years, says he “definitely wasn’t looking for a winery, but I really thought this seemed like a fun, interesting business.” The first question many people ask is where Linville gets the grapes for his wines, since there obviously are no vineyards located behind the shopping center. “All of the wines we sell and serve are made right here,” he says. “We can order the ‘must’ (the juice of the grapes) of more than 125 grape varieties from just about anyplace around the world and make any type of wine in the three large tanks inside the winery,” he says. “And, all of our wines are low-sulfite (a common wine preservative) wines, which means that their shelf life is only about two or a maximum of about two-and-a-half years.”

Of the wines regularly made and kept on-hand at Aspirations are a nice cabernet sauvignon-shiraz blend called Swamp Juice, cab, merlot, raspberry merlot, Chilean carmenere and my favorite (of course), a very smooth, drinkable malbec. I’m not quite as into white wine, but I have to admit that I enjoyed the peach-infused chardonnay. It tastes like a champagne Bellini cocktail, without the bubbles. I was impressed to also find opportunities to order some of my other favorite grape varieties, including sangiovese, temparanillo, grenache, Super Tuscan and even an authentic Italian amarone. Varietals that interest many people include a Washington state merlot, Australian cab and pinot grigio. “The ‘must’ that we receive is a blend of available grapes from a variety of wineries,” Linville says. “We therefore can’t get the same grapes used in a particular wine or guarantee a region where the grapes come from, but these are all quality grapes.”

Great Tasting Events

In addition to being able to sample up to three of the wines on hand at Aspirations any time for free (or ten samples for just $5), Linville offers regular tasting events, where all you pay is $1 for each 2-3-oz. sample with no admission or cover charge. He also provides drawings for some great prizes, free wine smoothie samples, light hors d’oeuvres (including some tasty CDB pizza) and live entertainment for each tasting. “The tastings are a great way to sample our wines and experience the winery in a social setting,” he says. “And, we offer discounted pricing on bottles in the store during the tastings, too.” The next tasting event will be held Thursday, November 17, beginning at 7 p.m. “We did three in October and they were all very successful,” Linville says. “You can check our website for our entire event calendar each month.” Jazzy R&B pianist Omar

Davis provides the entertainment, which serves as enjoyable background music for great conversation. I attended the third and final tasting held in October and there were several couples visiting, about half of whom had never visited Aspirations before. During the tasting, a regular customer named Lauren came in to buy several bottles of wine, including two bottles of Aspirations’ peach chardonnay. “I love all the wines here,” she said. “Especially the peach chardonnay!” Linville says that many of his regular customers are fans of the fruit-infused wines. “They go great with spicy foods, like Thai or spicy Mexican,” he says. “They’re very popular.” Owner Bill Linville of Aspirations Winery on E. Discover The Dances Of India & More At Srishti Dance Academy By Sheryl Young “Bollywood” style dancing has exploded into one of the most popular types of dance in America today. Featured in recent movies like “Slumdog Millionaire” and on television shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” Bollywood is a vibrant, energetic dance form. It mixes Indian, modern, jazz, hip hop and other styles. But, the Indian art forms of dance don’t stop there. The Srishti Dance Academy, in the Cory Lake Isles Professional Center on Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa, just a few miles south of anywhere in Wesley Chapel, is quickly helping to make not only Bollywood, but also Indian Classical, Folk and Fusion dancing a standard to be recognized and enjoyed by both children and adults. The founder and director of the Srishti Dance Academy is Swapna Komarraju, who was born and raised in Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh province in South India. She’s been dancing since age three, and now loves teaching. “I was always passionate about Indian dance forms, as my mom inspired me to get into learning dance,” says Swapna. “When I moved to the

U.S., I wanted to continue my involvement. I started small by teaching kids in our community and then moved on to start the Academy, which offers training in various Indian dance forms.” Swapna started the Srishti Academy four years ago and it’s been at its current location for the past two, introducing various Indian dances and movement to more people beyond the Indian community. “Since Bollywood became so popular, I’m seeing a large influx of Americans in my Sunday adult classes,” Swapna says. Swapna was professionally trained in the classical dance forms of Kuchipudi and Andhra Natyam, by respected dance gurus in India (she credits Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna, Dr. Shoba Naidu, Sri. Sudhakar and Smt. Ratna Sri). Both easily recognizable by audiences everywhere for their colorful costumes and expressive movements, Kuchipudi is primarily focused on grace and expression whereas Andhra Natyam is more rigorous. Today, she teaches Tiny Tots through Adults at the Srishti Dance Academy, beginning with Fundamentals of Dance through Intermediate and Advanced classes in the various dances.

Gujarati Samaj is a non-profit organization for educational and cultural activities to promote the Indian heritage. The 2010 Festival took place at the USF Sun Dome. This year, the event was held on November 11 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. “The dances are the highlight,” Swapna says of the event. “But, the variety of food and cultural items and the wide array of fashion clothing and jewelry displayed by vendors, attracts a wide cross section of the population in and around Tampa. Around 10,000 people attend the event every year.”

Swapna and some of her students were numbered among 2,800 Kuchipudi dancers in creating a Guinness World Record for performing big group dance choreography at the Second International Kuchipudi Convention in Swapna’s home town of Hyderabad. Srishti’s website shows a long list of performances by members of the Academy in the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas. The most recent on the list was at Saint Leo University near Dade City, the state’s oldest Catholic college.

More Than Just Dance at Srishti Academy

In addition to the dance classes, the Academy now offers instruction in Indian Art as well as Yoga. Swapna proudly talks about her Art and Yoga instructors. “Shyama Rangwala is our very talented art teacher, who offers training in traditional Indian art, drawing, coloring, charcoal art, and acrylic Owner Swapna Komarraju (in pink) teaches boys and girls painting. She has won several many different traditional dance disciplines of India at Srishti Dance Academy. awards and host-

ed shows. Supriya Bellur is our professionally trained Yoga teacher. Her classes have been an instant hit with our adult students.” But that’s not all! Just in recent months, Shyama has also started teaching two Indian languages at Srishti: Hindi and Guyarati. Instruction levels vary depending upon age and expertise. Dance and Art students can start as young as four years old. This training provides an added perk for young students: Learning discipline and good manners. Swapna also strives to teach her young pupils good values through the medium of dance. Ritu Mitra is the proud mother of two Srishti Academy dance students, and says they are wonderful examples of this training. “My daughter Neha started here in April,” Ritu says. “I am amazed to see the progress she’s made in the classical dance. Although she already knew Bollywood, doing the classical style has given her stamina, grace and elegance, and she’s improved in her ability.” And, Ritu says there are other benefits of the training. “My son, Ankush, has lost stiffness and become more flexible. For both of my children, I am pleased that it’s also helped with respect for elders, discipline, manners, obedience and developing their person-

alities. Swapna can be strict, but she is very good with the children.” Not wanting to take all the credit for the success of the studio, Swapna is grateful to her husband, with whom she moved to Tampa six years ago. “My husband, Deepak Chinthamalla, is my backbone,” she says. “He helps me greatly with the studio set-up and upgrades, website and promotion of our Academy. His support is invaluable. It helps me focus on my dance classes completely. His contribution is huge when we have shows or events.” The couple has a two and a half year old son, Ayush, and Swapna also thanks her husband for staying home with him while she is at the studio. Monthly fees for Adult Dance are $50; Kids Dance - $65. Art and Language classes are ($60) and Yoga is $65. There are discounts available for multiple classes. In each discipline, there are four classes per month, and each class is one-hour long. The Srishti Dance Academy is located at 10329 Cross Creek Blvd, Suite L. For more information about class schedules or to view photos of some truly stunning performances, visit SrishtiAcademy.com. The phone numbers are 404-1862 for Dance, 843-6784 for Art and 600-7561 for Yoga classes.
